A learning environment by Tom Woods MORE than 4,500 school pupils in Estepona will take part in environmental education activities in an initiative to raise awareness about the importance of the issue. Workshops will be organised in the schools of the town throughout the year, run by officials from the council’s Environment Department. They aim to make young people aware of the need to take care of the environment, teaching short to medium term solutions to prevent unnecessary harm. Councillor for Development, Ana Velasco, has commented that the environmental programme is also available to charities and social groups in the locality that are interested. Participants will be able to present their business ideas and make new contacts to boost their enterprises. T he event will r un from April 13-15 and those setting out their stalls are expected to be showcasing a var ie t y o f fo o d , f a s h i o n , craftsmanship among other wares. It is an initiative that has been promoted by the council’s Department for Equality in order to help women inte g rate into the labour market. Councillor for Equality, Ana Mata said: “In Fueng irola we have many women entrepreneurs who work ver y hard ever y day to take their businesses for ward, and we want to give them the opportunity to promote themselves.”

€500,000 for beach makeover MORE than €500,000 has been invested by water company Acosol in an operation to remove sanitation wells and drainage pipes from San Pedro de Alcantara beach. The recent storms had dislocated large swathes of sand, uncovering the unsightly infrastructure network. It is expected that removal works will take three months to complete, and will involve the construction of a new jetty. The funding will also go towards the installation of an 800metre wooden walkway, lighting, new access routes to the beaches and rubbish bins.

Braving the weather and waiting for the parade to start. VISITORS to the Semana Santa parades in Estepona on Good Friday were put off by the bitingly cold weather. It appears that only the hardiest souls were prepared to hang around waiting for the last evening parade and although there were a number of barriers put up in the old town, there was plenty of space in the front rows. Many appeared to have decided to move to local bars and restaurants or went home to watch other parades on TV in comfort. This was a parade that included a large number of children and they must be praised for their fortitude for waiting and braving the very cold temperatures.
Police arrest balcony burglar OFFICERS of the National Police have arrested a man who is accused of six robberies in a hotel in Fuengirola. Sources suggest that the thief accessed the building by posing as a customer and once inside, used the ‘slip’ technique, (opening doors with a plastic sheet), without breaking the lock. The 42-year-old Spaniard’s partner, a 45-year-old Cuban woman, has also been arrested for her complicity. An operation began after a guest of the hotel complained that he had seen a man in his room on the 10th floor, who had then escaped over the balcony and away from the hotel. Aware that he was being investigated, the suspect left his apartment in Torremolinos to hide in a f lat in Benalmadena, where he was

€20,000 for park A PROGR A MME of action for t h e re n o v a t i o n o f c h i l d re n s ’ p l ay a re a s a n d d o g p a r k s h a s been launched by Marbella Council. Councillor for Parks and Gardens , Javier Garci a has overseen the plan which has a budget of €20,000.
“ This council has always prioritised the maintenance of these recreational spaces which are of such importance for children and pets,” said Mr Garcia. A t i m e s c a l e o f 9 0 d ay s h a s been allocated for the complete repair, painting , and restoration of the childrens’ play areas.
Security equipment will also be replaced to comply with current regulations, while emergency work to the canine parks has also been approved. This urgent work will include per imeter improvements, repair, re painting and re placement of the equipment.
REAL MADRID FC understands the whole concept of licensing and the need for fans to obtain official merchandise to show their support for the club. Apart from having a number of official stores throughout Madrid and a very strong online presence, the club recently introduced their Official Roadshow. Fans can visit the coach which has giant images of players Gareth Bale, Ronaldo and Karim Benzema on the outside and be pictured with the Champions Trophy, see historical and signed material about the club and of course buy official merchandise. Knowing how many Madrileños spend Easter in Marbella and how many Real Madrid fans there are generally in the city, the bus spent a few days near the sea front attracting visitors before moving on to its next port of call.

Half mast orders lead to Easter row A MAJOR constitutional row has broken out in Spain after the country’s Ministry of Defence (MOD) instructed all of their installations to fly the flag at half mast over Easter to commemorate the death of Jesus Christ. For the second consecutive year, the MOD issued an order which said: “From 2pm on Holy Thursday until one minute past midnight on Easter Sunday, the national flag must be flown at half mast at all military units, bases, centres and barracks, as well as the Ministry of Defence and its regional departments.” A spokesman for the MOD said that “flying the flag at half mast for religious reasons was in keeping with tradition and was part of the secular tradition of the armed forces.” However, Spain’s national ombudsman, Francisco Fernandez Marugan, criticised the action on the grounds that constitutionally, Spain is a secular state. According to the
1978 constitution, “No religion shall have a state character. The public authorities shall take into account the religious beliefs of Spanish society and shall consequently maintain appropriate cooperation relations with the Catholic Church and other confessions.” The ombudsman went on to add that “even if this tradition has acquired a ‘secular’ connotation over the years there is no doubt that it also has a religious one,” and that “these practices could lead people to think that the state was more inclined to honour one religion than another” and that a non-confessional state had to demonstrate neutrality in regard to the various religions. As part of a major study carried out earlier this year by the Spanish Centre for Sociological Research, 68.5 per cent of Spaniards identified themselves as Catholics and 26.4 per cent as atheists. There are approximately two million Muslims and 50,000 Jews in Spain.
It really is a dog’s life POLICE dogs based in Madrid have begun to experience the ultimate in dog pampering when the doors of the recently upgraded kennels opened this week. Speaking to the Spanish media, Madrid’s Local Police said the 22 canines have moved back into their base after a three-month renovation project aimed at improving their overall health and well-being. The redesigned accommodation now has its own vets, a pool and a personal care centre, as well as a grassed play area and shaded patio where the dogs can keep cool in the summer months. A new audio system has been installed for the music therapy sessions, using a technique called the Mozart Effect which the police said they had found to reduce stress in the dogs.
They can even chill out listening to their favourite music as classical tunes will be played at different times throughout the day as part of music therapy sessions. Known as the Mozart Effect, the experience has been proved to reduce stress in the dogs. All the dogs enjoying this special treatment are trained in a series of different specialised tasks, such as the detection of explosives, money and drugs. Others are usually assigned to helping with search and rescue operations. N o w, f o l l o w i n g a d a y ’s h a r d work, the dogs will be able to rest in modern kennels complete with heated beds; all part of a new climate-control system that is expected to save up to 80 per cent of current energy bills.

Union street lives up to name IMPROVEMENT works to the Calle L a Union, which runs through both Mijas and Fuengirola, are to get under way shortly. Although the two towns are governed by different political parties, they have come together to form an agreement on improvements to the street. During local holidays some businesses on the street will be open and others closed depending on their position on the road, with different regulations and even a different cleaning service. There has even been uncertainty when it comes to crime,
with an incident where the Guardia Civil investigated a case which happened at the halfway point of the street, because the bullet casings were in Mijas. Mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado said: “The good understanding between the two administrations has led to this joint action amounting to almost €1 million.” For her part, mayor of Fuengirola Ana Mula commented: “ We have set in motion a complete remodelling, which not only renews the road surface, but will have special adaptations.” She added that specific space will be created for those with reduced mobility.

COUNCILLOR of Culture for Benalmadena, Elena Galan, has announced that April will again be Music and Book month, with a complete calendar of related events. There will be 17 initiatives to promote reading with the collaboration of libraries and the cinema club More Wood. A book fair will also be held with a large presence of local booksellers and publishers, which Ms Galan believes will help bring about a new ‘cultural spring’ in the area. Authors including Juan Madrid and Andres Vazquez de Solas will be present, along with poet Luis Garcia Montero and pianist Rosa Torres-Pardo. There will also be a per-

RESIDENTS of Mijas are urging the council to provide a documentation office for the town, so that they will be able to renew passports and other documents much easier. There are 180,000 combined inhabitants of Mijas and Fuengirola, and at the moment only one such office exists in the latter to process people’s papers. Graffiti spoils the Trapiche del Prado A CONSERVATION group in defence of the Trapiche del Prado, a heritage building in Marbella, has criticised the council for neglect and inaction over graffiti. The monument, which was built on the slopes of Sierra Blanca in 1644, is very important in the sugar history of the city and was first owned by Flemish merchants. Members of the conservation group have written to both Marbella Council and the
Junta de Andalucia regional government to decry the situation and urge action. They would like the authorities to honour their ‘commitment to the project of perimeter fencing, cleaning, clearing and other safety work, as well as a study of the Trapiche del Prado to assess its deteriorating condition.’ The group also highlights three walls where graffiti and paintings have appeared on the south facade.
Back to school for parents B E N A L M A D E N A’ s councillor for Education, Elena Galan, has announced the formation of a School of Parents. The group will meet at the Culture House where there will be a range of speakers and workshops for them to take part in. “A comprehensive
education will never be possible without the active participation of parents, and this school was born in order for them to get more involved in the educational comm u n i t y, ” s a i d M s Galan. These workshops will be held every Tu e s d a y a n d T h u r s -
day at 6pm in the Culture House, until May 17. They will address five educational areas: families with children up to six years old; bullying; preadolescent and adolescent children; children with disabilities; and the prevention of drug dependence.

MAYOR of Benalmadena, Victor Navas, has met with residents of Bajondillo and visited the Tribuna building with them. The residents have expressed their concerns about the condition of the historic structure, which is currently in disuse. “This council plans to convert the Tribuna building into a tourist information centre, which will also house archaeological pieces about the history of Benalmadena,” said Mr Navas. “We are committed to the recovery of our historical heritage and for this reason we want this building to house pieces such as the recently recovered coat of arms of Felix Solecio, after its disappearance of more than 10 years.”

The branch will provide a range of information and advice to help people integrate into Spanish life, particularly in issues that effect the over 50’s. It will also work closely with the various consulates that are represented along the coast. Coffee mornings are held at the Padel Club in San Pedro de Alcantara on the first Thursday of each month and all are welcome to attend. The charity is planning a series of fundraising events for the coming year in order to help promote and fund its services, and is also launching a recruitment programme for volunteers. ROAD READY: Mayor Ruiz Boix inspects the results with other officials. RESTORATION works that have been taking place on Calle Sevilla of the station in San Roque have been completed. The major project involved the removal of structural barriers, providing a new steel network, and improving access. Mayor of San Roque, Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix visited the site and was impressed with both the functional and aesthetic improvement of one of the busiest roads in
the neighbourhood. “We have increased space for the pedestrian zone on one side of the street, while on the other side we have created enough space for the passage of cars and wheelchairs,” said Mr Ruiz Boix. Residents have welcomed the work, part i c u l a r l y a s t h e s t re e t i s n e a r t h e S a n Bernardo school and so the area experiences significant footfall.

Glorious gardens FUENGIROLA Council is investing €679,000 in the complete remodelling of the Jardines de la Veguila. The project will be located between Plaza de la Hispanidad and Jesus Santos Rein Avenue, and includes the creation of specific spaces for both parents and children. Works are underway and there will be children’s games, rest areas, while petanque courts will be added at the request of residents.

Spare us the health warnings by Barry Duke
I HAD to check the date when I read that purveyors of coffee in California may soon have to carry warnings that their cappuccinos, lattes, expressos and the like may cause cancer. Was this an April Fool’s Day joke? Nope. Just another depressing example of the Health Gestapo jack-booting its way through the legal system. California, according to last Friday’s CNN report, lists chemicals it considers possible causes of cancer. One of them is acrylamide, created when coffee beans are roasted. It stays in the coffee in what a court called ‘high amounts’. A lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in 2010 by the non-profit Council for Education and Research on Toxics targeted several companies that make or sell coffee. The suit demanded damages and
labels to warn consumers. Hours before this story broke I had a lengthy conversation with my husband Marcus about coffee, which we both drink in copious quantities after tumbling out of bed each morning. For around five years we’ve used separate French presses - one for his caffeine-laden Jurado, and the other for my Jurado decaf because morning hits of caffeine were making me a tad jittery. The conversation arose because Marcus was recently admitted to hospital with a severe lung infection, and while recovering the coffee he was given was decaffeinated. The upshot was that we decided we would both forego caffeine. That way, we’d only have to wash up one large cafetiere instead of two baby ones. Then up popped the CNN report, and an irrational part of my brain suggested that maybe we should just give up coffee altogether and keep our bodies free of this deadly acrylamide stuff. The thought lasted about two seconds. “Get a grip,” I told myself. People tell me “Your body is a temple” and I’ve always retorted “Wrong. Mine’s much more like a decrepit house of ill repute in Mexico City!” So, the
coffee ritual goes on. The deeper I got into the CNN report, the angrier I became, for here was yet another example of goodytwo-shoes fanatics who have nothing better to do than fill people with anxiety over utterly inconsequential matters. Gullible paranoiacs will no doubt rush to bin their coffee supplies and seek healthier alternatives. These scaredy-cats deserve Jillian Mai Thi Epperly’s under-fermented, oversalted cabbage juice. Who is Epperly? A skinny Ohio
woman who is fattening her bank account by flogging her ‘cure-all’ juice - a brew she claims can solve practically any health problem from cancer to dwarfism. It can reverse vasectomies and regrow amputated limbs. And - get this - it can also cure homosexuality. Surprisingly, she stops short of claiming it can raise the dead. Her potion is a purgative and she cheerfully says that ‘healing symptoms’ include nausea, headaches, dizziness, and explosive blasts of diarrhoea. These ‘waterfalls’ supposedly eject ‘bad’ para-

sites, which you can see wriggling around your loo after her ‘poop juice’ takes effect. Nice! What really riles me is that, while there are thousands of charlatans out there who escape all forms of regulation and can make millions out of useless and, in Epperly’s case, thoroughly dangerous ‘cures’, people earning an honest living selling something as harmless as coffee can be forced to slap health warnings on their products. For the record, coffee is NOT bad for your health. Last year Time magazine reported that studies show that people who drink coffee regularly are less likely to develop type two diabetes. And in one large study involving tens of thousands of people, researchers found that those who drank several cups of coffee a day - anywhere from two to four - actuallly had a lower risk of stroke. Heart experts say the benefits may come from coffee’s effect on the blood vessels; by keeping vessels flexible and healthy, it may reduce the risk of atherosclerosis, which can cause heart attacks. Now, to damp down my fury, please point me towards the nearest establishment that sells good coffee, cognac and bloody big cigars!

WE English have the universal answer to whatever crisis we are personally faced with, and that’s to have a nice cup of tea. It’s a sure fire remedy we believe, for whatever ails us.
We are also renowned for our preoccupation with the weather, and conversations with fellow countrymen and women invariably cover the subject of the vagaries of the British climate. I had to smile therefore, when talking to a pair of fellow expatriates at our regular coffee and tea stop this morning, and the chit chat got around to the winter we have just experienced in Spain. ‘I know I shouldn’t say this’, the lady informed us guiltily, ‘but the garden needs some rain.’ She was right, but it invoked a feeling of nostalgia in me and I reflected back to our

home in Suffolk where we enjoyed a large country garden surrounded by fields and paddocks. Not that I was that much of a gardener myself, with the ‘princess’ taking charge of her beloved flower garden and me delegated to the task of keeping the extensive vegetable and fruit areas weed free and productive. It was something that I regarded as a chore rather than a pleasurable experience. I enjoyed the finished product, but not the interminable round of digging, hoeing and pruning, and I longed for a smaller easy to maintain patch of land. I had a willing source of advice from an ancient neighbour - a real man of the soil who shared with me his tips on producing the best results and which always involved a good deal of me being elbow deep in piles of festering horse manure. His age was a mystery, but the Dead Sea was probably not even sick when he was a
boy, which meant that his knowledge and wisdom of all things bucolic was limitless. ‘Don’t cast a clout ‘til May is out’, was one of his favourite quotes, meaning wrap up warm until the end of the month of May right? No incorrect, he gleefully informed us, what it actually means is keep warm until the Mayflower or Hawthorne is in bloom. He was also one of the judges at our annual village show, who awarded me first prize for the best tasting gooseberries one year, even though none of the requisite six specimens I had exhibited had been cut or bitten into. I queried this. Tapping the side of his nose knowingly he told me that they could tell just by looking at them. Now with only a modest paved area housing a plethora of potted plants and flowers, there’s a part of me that hankers after that Suffolk Eden.

The show must go on in Fuengirola THIS title refers to both the music of Queen Machine who are travelling from Denmark to present a concert at Castle Sohail and Cudeca charity which cares for those suffering from cancer. The band does everything that it can to recreate a Queen performance with replica costumes, light show and choreography that match the original band and the guitarist even uses a sixpence rather than a plectrum as a salute to Brian May. This visit to Fuengirola on Saturday April 21 will see the band performing to raise funds for the Cudeca Hospice in Benalmadena and they will then be embarking on a tour of Europe and on to the USA.
The doors to the castle open at 7pm and the first act will be Paul ‘Piano Man’ Maxwel, the popular singer and pianist from JoysLive in Puerto Banus who has supported some top names who have performed in Marbella such as Michael Bolton, Seal and Lionel Richie. Paul who is expected to bring his signature white piano with him, will be singing and playing some of the greatest hits of his favourite singers. This promises to be a fantastic evening at a historic venue with those who attend knowing funds are for the Hospice.

Food smoking at the table is one but we also use dry ice especially for desserts, and smooth purees to accompany a range of dishes to add flavours and colours. Souvide slow cooking for tender meat that has been marinated and cooked gently in its marinade but keeps it rare, gels for dressing plates to add vibrant colour and intense flavours and savoury granitas and snows …
are just a few. Smoking is a great way of adding theatre and flavour to a dish. A few years ago we started by smoking duck at the table as a tasting dish and now we smoke our own salmon but actually at your table. The other week a client complained that another client was smoking at the table inside. I looked over and saw the smoke pouring from his table. It did look like cigar smoke and I laughed out loud. This may all sound complicated but it’s really easy and it will make a piece of salmon a really special and memorable dish. Another new trend over here is brunch. It has been on trend in the UK for many years and in New York for about 20 years but over here in Spain it is only just starting to get popular. Mindful of that I am planning on launching a new brunch menu concept at a friend’s
restaurant on the beach in the next few weeks. I will be able to tell you more when I know that we are ready, at the moment we are a few weeks off. On the menu I have put things like smoked salmon with scrambled eggs but smoked at the table so you really get the fresh smoky vapours, aromas and flavours. We will also have classic Eggs Benedict and a really great Waldorf salad dish with free-range chicken. Some of these old retro dishes are really back on trend but given a modern twist of course. Nowadays you can buy smoking guns in all sizes where you ignite the wood like a lighter and then the smoke bellows out of a pipe. Just as effective and a lot cheaper is to take some twigs from a good tree that have fallen off and dried out. We use the twigs from dried Rioja
vines but you could use oak or cherry or fig etc. You then ignite the twigs in a naked flame and when it’s burning, you blow it out. That will create enough smoke to fill a small glass cloche so that you hold and can see the smoke inside. When the dish has had about three to five minutes in the smoke you lift the cloche and eat the salmon. The flavours are amazing. This works with other fish or meat too. I like to smoke scallops which are sitting on black pudding, with truffle sauce around and we sometimes smoke our famous crispy duck under the cloche which gives the duck a nice complexity. I buy fresh Norwegian salmon and cure it with 60 per cent sugar and 40 per cent salt. The salt and sugar are mixed together and then you pack it on the flesh of the fish and wrap it in cling film then leave it in the fridge for 48 hours. After this time you wash off the salt/sugar and then you can marinade the salmon flesh down in a deep tray with things like gin with lime and tonic or beetroot juice and lime, or sangria, tequila etc. That gives it a really modern sophisticated twist. Then after marinating it for about eight hours, lift the fish out, pat dry and brush with olive oil. You can then slice it thinly for the final stage, the smoking. However, a shortcut would be to buy some gravadlax of salmon pre sliced and drizzle with gin and lime and then smoke. A lot easier but not anything as great as the former.
For the seaweed
DRAMATIC SMOKE: Under a cloche.
We buy a natural seaweed and process it ourselves to bring out the sweet tangy flavours, but you can buy it already done from the Japanese section of stores like Carrefour. Buy approx150grm of sweet algae from a Japanese store (alternatively you can use salad underneath chopped finely)

salmon and roll up so that you have four roulades (rolls) of salmon. • Put a little algae or chopped salad on a plate and top with the roulade of salmon. Finish with a little caviar on top. • Now place a glass cloche (dome) on top of each salmon and ignite your wood being careful not to burn yourself! • Lift the cloche slightly and insert the smoking vine under the glass cloche. When the cloche is filled sufficiently with smoke (about one minute) close the cloche tightly to hold the smoke in. • Present the plate to your guest but leave the glass cloche in place for a few minutes. After three minutes remove the cloche and immediately eat the dish.

Open questions in third person Basic Spanish for everyday needs

KEEPING in mind the pearls of wisdom we learnt in the last article (pause while you scrabble about for last week’s newspaper) we will now complete our look at open and closed questions. We have got as far as seeing that an open question begins with a question word, or group of words forming a question, for example: ‘Dónde’, ‘Cuándo’, ‘Por qué’, ‘De qué color’ and many more. We then saw that this was followed by a verb. So we have: “¿Cuántos hijos tienes?” (How many children have you got?) “Cuántos hijos” is the question and ‘tienes’ is the verb. “¿Qué estás haciendo?” (What are you doing?) Here ‘Qué’ is the question, and ‘estás haciendo’ together form the verb, and these two verb words do not separate. “¿Dónde estás?” (Where are you?) ‘Dónde’ is the question and ‘estás’ is the verb. These are all questions in the second person or ‘you’ form, even though we haven’t inserted the word ‘you’ into the
sentence. If we were to do so, the questions would be: “¿Cuántos hijos tienes tú?”, “¿Qué estás haciendo tú?”, “¿Dónde estás tú?” As we have said many times before the ‘tú’ is not necessary to make ourselves clear, but we can use it if we want to. The reason I mention it now though, is to indicate the word order of an open question, which is question + verb + subject. So, we will now apply this principle to questions about a third person, that is, a ‘he’ a ‘she’ or even an ‘it’. To go from “How many children have you got?” to “How many children has Pedro got?”, we follow the same word order, which gives us: “¿Cúantos hijos tiene Pedro?” (question + verb + subject). “¿Qué estás haciendo?” (What are you doing?) “¿Qué está haciendo tu hijo?” (What is your son doing?) “¿Dónde estás?” (Where are you?) “¿Dónde está el ayuntamiento?” (Where is the town hall?) We can ask similar questions in the plural: “¿De qué color son las cortinas?” (What colour are the curtains?) Notice as well that prepositions go in front of question words to form part of the question. “¿De qué color?” (literally “of what colour?”) is an example of this. Also “¿A qué hora?” (at what time) “¿Durante
cuánto tiempo?” (for how long) “¿Con quién?” (with whom) and many more. We cannot put prepositions at the ends of questions as we do in English. These probably all look quite straightforward to you, which is good. The trick is to remember that exactly the same word order will hold true even when our sentences get much more advanced and complicated. So with that said - let’s speak a bit of Spanish shall we? Kenny’s Postbag Kenny, My Father died a few weeks ago. During the interment a colourful bird appeared and it flew onto the coffin and all around us. Comments were made after the service, and such a bird would not normally be flying around in the cold weather. Was it my Dad saying goodbye? Debbie H-K. Birds symbolise freedom in their flight. I have heard of birds and butterflies hovering around gravesides, especially during burial services; and I have experienced them myself. Spirit communicates in some very strange ways, and their actions are open to interpretation. I would not rule out that this colourful bird was a message to you that your Dad has made his journey, and is safe and secure, and free of pain in the Spirit World.

health Eat early and let your body rest EATING late at night is a common occurrence for Spaniards who enjoy late night family meals in the c o o l e r s u m m e r a i r, b u t experts believe it may be damaging to your health. Researchers from Turkey found a late-night meal keeps the body on ‘high alert’ when it should be winding down and relaxing ready for sleep. They advise that adults should never eat within two hours of bedtime and ideally nothing after 7pm. Eating late leaves people with a higher blood pressure, when normally levels drop at bedtime. This can lead to a high-
er chance of a heart-related death, the researchers claim. The Turkish team presented their results at the European Society of Cardiology congress in Rome, Italy. They tracked 721 people diagnosed with high blood pressure, with an average age of 53 and found those who ate within two hours of going to bed were 2.8 times more likely to retain high blood pressure overnight. Some 9.4 million people in the UK are diagnosed with high blood pressure, which is also known as hypertension.
Migraines are a severe disability MORE than 3.5 million people suffer from migraines in Spain and another one million suffer from chronic headaches for more than 15 days a month. The Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) has marked the European Day of Action Against Migraines, a disease they said has considerable medical, social and economic impact, and mainly affects patients aged between 20 and 50 years old. A study conducted by members of SEN in patients who visited the neurology department, said that more than 70 per cent have a severe disability and 14 per cent a moderate disability. At least 25 per cent of patients have not consulted their illness with a doctor and 50 per cent do not follow up

Worrying can be a stressful time FORGET binge-drinking or binge-eating, are you a binge-thinker? Experts fear the nation is in the midst of an epidemic of anxiety and say women in particular are racked with worry and binge-thinking; continuously over-thinking events and details and replaying things in their minds. Such behaviour can make you ill, lead to insomnia, fertility problems, adult acne and hair loss as well as depression and further anxiety. Many experts say it is not even major life issues such as money and relationships that cause the most worry, but smaller, minor niggles people struggle to not think about. So what can you do to reduce the stress and anxiety? Talk about it Talking your problems through with others, either a partner, friend or even counsellor, can help you take stock and see things in perspective and create a ‘feel good’ factor.
Live for now Too much worry is over ‘what ifs’ so try and live in the present. Forget about what could happen or dwelling in the past and live for now. Deal with things If there are things worrying you then deal with what you can, rather than burying them away to linger. Someone upset you? Tell them and move on. Worrying over a relationship? Talk it through. Stressed over workload? Speak up and get help from colleagues. By not addressing the smaller things they can escalate and build up. Worry is the main factor in breakdowns and depression with one of the earliest symptoms manifesting in insomnia. Cortisone, a hormone released by the body during times of anxiety, is an acne trigger and stress hormones are also responsible for another unpleasant side effect - hair loss.
Complementary therapies can help their first consultations and take the correct medication. Dr Patricia Pozo Rosich, coordinator of the study group recommends sufferers seek an appointment with the neurologist as “almost all cases are likely to improve if they are handled in an appropriate manner.”
COMPLEMENTARY therapies can be effective at easing chronic symptoms. Scientists studied clinical trials and found some of the most popular complementary health therapies, including yoga, acupuncture and tai-chi, can help to manage painful conditions such as osteoarthritis and migraines. Previously there had been a lack of evidence surrounding such approaches, meaning health professionals were not recommending them. The findings mean more people could be encouraged to try this approach rather than using drugs. The researchers reviewed 105 controlled trials, from the past 50 years, that were relevant to patients with pain conditions. Some were more effective than others at easing back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and severe migraines.

sport THE Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has threatened to take legal action against Malta after claims that Maltese players were drugged during a European qualifier in the 1980’s. The infamous qualifier in 1983 saw Spain needing 11 goals to overtake Holland to qualify for Euro 84, with Spain winning the match 12-1 on the day and qualifying for the Euro’s. Spain scored nine times in the second half, having led 3-1 at halftime, and Malta’s goal scorer on the day, Silvio Demanuele, has now claimed that they were given ‘drugged’ lemons at half-time while also stating that the Spanish players had taken performance enhancing drugs. Demanuele told the media: “When I sucked on those lemons, I felt drunk, as if I had been out partying all night.” The former Maltese international also reportedly went on to claim that the Spanish players had taken performance enhancing drugs, claiming some were ‘foaming at the mouth.’ “The energy that the Spaniards had wasn’t normal,” he added.

Sol Don Pablo Lawn Bowls Club THE Bowls Club, formerly Belplaya LBC, relocated to its new home in September 2017 and has enjoyed an extremely successful time in the beach front location in Torremolinos where it has the use of a 2 x 3 Rink Lawn Bowls facility. Having won the Tigers’ League Trophy the previous season, the Club’s first team finished a creditable fourth in 2017/18 despite several high profile members leaving the Club for personal reasons during the summer break. However the current season was considered to be extremely successful as the Club won the other two trophies being competed for. The Lions’ League, acknowledged as the ‘second tier’ of Bowling on the Costa Del Sol, was dominated by the Club who were crowned Champions for the first time in its history. It racked up a total of 120 points from the 14 matches played, losing only once during the season, and finishing 34 points ahead of its closest rivals. The strength in depth within the Club was a signifi-
cant factor in Don Pablo regaining the League Cup. The final was the result of an exceptional team performance but, over the three rounds, 24 members participated which indicates the win was the result of an excellent Club performance. It means that, having never won any Championship or title before 2014, the Club has now won the League Cup on three occasions, the Tigers’ League Title on three occasions and the Lions’ League Title for the first time this season. Quite a record! BENAVISTA BOWLS CLUB recently held their Spring Classic Competition comprising of trips and pairs. The trips competition was between Rosie Jamieson, Jean Munt and Mehdi Akkouh and Sue Brightman, Roy Saunders and Denis Tolfree. Rosie, Jean and Mehdi were the winners with a score of 2114. This was Denis’s 11th Classic Final with him winning eight of them. The Pairs Competition was played between Eleanor and John Morgan and Dave Townsend and Barry Pemberton. This was a close fought game, but Eleanor and John came through to win the game 21-14. Special thanks to the competition organiser, Neil Marshall, who had a difficult task with bad

weather and illness delaying several games, but managed to come through and organise a very successful competition.

Subaru Outback TEST DRIVE BY TIM SAUNDERS “IT’S too big, I can’t drive it,” says my wife when she tries to drive the Subaru Outback. True, it is a large vehicle. But if given the chance it exceeds expectations. Because here we have an estate that boasts a massive boot, large enough (once the retractable cover is removed) for all the stuff that the Saunders family regularly travels with: two pushchairs, travel cot, luggage and lots of food. But the great thing is that when behind the wheel the driver forgets that it’s an estate car. This is a thoroughly capable vehicle both on and off road because it is equipped with all symmetrical all-wheel drive. Basically this is as safe as it gets with all the wheels talking to each other and working together to produce a perfect driving experience no matter what the terrain. Instead of a traditional handbrake there’s an electric one operated at a push of a button. Its seven-speed automatic gearbox can also be driven like a manual thanks to the paddle shifts either side of the
steering wheel. Driving in automatic mode the dials have a blue glow but select manual mode and the glow changes to red. The ‘Scooby Doo’ is fitted with an intelligent cruise control which delights in moments like this because it will brake and accelerate itself all the while keeping a set distance behind the car in front. These systems are always too slow for me when it comes to accelerating but I expect this is all in the name of economy. What I do like is that the driver can override by pushing the accelerator to the floor and then once you’re going fast enough you can take your foot off the gas and the system will take over once again. Cruise control is useful on these dull motorway journeys. During a heavy persistent downpour I find that when the wipers are at their fastest the right one rubs over the edge of the windscreen making an unnerving sound. I am sure this can be easily remedied. The car itself handles very well indeed

no matter what the conditions. Being slightly wider than most cars there is a good amount of space for rear passengers and three children’s car seats fit in without issue. However, it can be awkward to fit the seatbelts on the two outer seats when Henry’s car seat is fitted. I am fairly impressed with the satellite navigation in the Subaru. It can definitely be relied upon for those shorter jour-
neys. However, there is room for improvement when using it for guidance over longer journeys. I am undecided about the power tailgate. During the test it is blisteringly hot and so parked by the roadside I push the button to open it. This saves me from getting out of the car, which at this particular moment is a great help. Great. But these power tailgates have their downsides; accidentally catch your finger under it and you could lose it; these systems don’t seem to stop for anything. Then there’s the issue that it can be easy to forget that there is a power tailgate and the boot is closed manually which can’t be good for the system. The Outback is an extremely capable vehicle but the fuel economy could be improved.
