Sharp disagreement sees man stabbed TWO members of a radical political group associated with the extreme left have been arrested by the National Police for an alleged knife attack. The detainees, aged 19 and 26, were at a supermarket in Torremolinos when they reportedly assaulted another young man who is believed to be of a different political persuasion. Sources indicate that the men had used offensive language against the victim, including death threats, before brandishing several knives. One of the suspects already had a banning order against the possession of weapons, as well as a further conviction. The victim suffered two wounds to his left arm before the assailants fled in a vehicle, though they were arrested moments later at a police checkpoint on Avenida de la Libertad. According to information obtained during the investigation, the detainees and the victim knew each other and had heated arguments on social media.

MARBELLA Council has approved planning licences worth more than €20m. This includes the green lighting of 128 multi-family blocks in the Guadaiza district for €15m, and a project for 49 homes in La Torrecilla for €6m. T he multiple car crash saw three people killed and nine injured, and the officer was driving at 149 km/h at the time. Although the driver is accused of 14 cr imes , the nature of the penal code as it stands will mean that he may only be handed a four-year jail term. This is because he can only be puni s h e d fo r o n e o f fe n c e , n o t fo r t h e gravity of each of them, according to the law. An array of drugs were found in the Guardia Civil officer’s bloodstream, including cocaine, benzodiazepines, and alcohol. The officer lost control of his car (a Hyundai borrowed from his father) while overtaking a Renault while going round a motorway bend. Plans for Dove park take flight BENALMADENA Council is overseeing the renovation of Dove Park and the cleaning of its lake. Parks and Gardens Councillor, Joaquin Villazon, recently visited the park and said: “On the request of residents and visitors, we are making the necessary adjustments to revive the lake. “We are building a cistern where new filters will be installed, and we are also cleaning the lake in a phased manner so as not to harm the various species of animals living in it.” Some of the sludge collected in the process will be used to fertilize sections of the park.

Timeshare scammers jailed

NINE British scammers who made almost €1 million in a timeshare racket have been sentenced. The culprits have been named as Brian Carr, 31, Daniel Carr, 24, Craig Walker, 27, and Brendan Hicks, 28, all from Redditch, Dawn Gingell, 55, from Hampshire, James Barrass, 37, from Norwich, Steven Cross, 37, from Worcester, Matthew Barker, 25, from Bromsgrove, and Alan Sharp, 66, from Norwich. They must serve a range of prison sentences totalling 20 years after being found guilty of conspiracy to defraud, perverting the course of justice, money laundering and fraudulent trading. Police say that 470 victims the majority elderly or sick were swindled over their properties in expatriate hotspots throughout Spain. They would receive phone calls falsely advising that a third party was interested in buying their timeshare rights provided they stump up an ‘advance sale fee.’ The gang would later demand more payments when the bogus deals failed to happen. On many occasions the un-

THANKS to the heavy rain yesterday (Thursday) there was a major accident on the A-7 motorway opposite Guadalmina (Marbella). A single lorry was involved in a collision which resulted in it jack-knifing and smashing into a metal barrier at the side of the road and then bouncing off and hitting the concrete central reservation spewing bits of concrete onto both sides of the road. The ‘ Wall of the Strait’ was built by between 10,000 and 15,000 republican prisoners on the orders of General Franco who feared an allied attack from Gibraltar.

THE chief of the Benalmadena Fire Department, David Bañasco, has demanded that the council take action to “cover the shortcomings” suffered by the service. The workforce has only 23 people for almost 30 square kilometres which includes three towns and a population of 67,000. This is significantly less than the European staff average of 44, and far less than nearby Torremolinos’ average of 58. Beach contract is a lifesaver MARBELLA Council plans to privatise the lifeguard and rescue serv i c e o n t h e c i t y ’s beaches, with a four-year contract. The tender is said to be worth €2 million but is not expected to be finalised before Easter. The deadline to submit offers ends on March 23 and the service will cover both rescue and healthcare. Councillor for S u s t a i n a b i l i t y, Miguel Diaz, said: “We have held several meetings and a plan is in place to increase the number of beach towers and improve water rescues.”

Radiology service opens in San Pedro THE Andalucian Health Service (SAS) has invested €70,000 in the acquisition of a new radiology team in the health centre of San Pedro Alcantara. Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo, the Andalucian Authority’s health representative, has announced that over the last month the necessary remodelling work to the centre has been carried out. Testing and installation of the new specialist equipment has been carried out, and staff have undergone all appropriate training. The previous equipment had malfunctioned on a number of occasions and staff are

pleased that is has been replaced with more modern, digital apparatus. The new radiological system incorporates state of the art technology and includes tools for image optimisation and noise elimination. In addition, a new waiting list management database will come into operation in the Emergency Department, resulting in better accessibility and patient safety. The last few months have seen the Andalucian Health Service deliver improvement works to 16 primary care centres in the province.

Urban rivers are a washout ESTEPONA Council has completed the work of clearing out five streams that run through urban areas, with the aim of preventing fires and floods. Large quantities of clutter have been removed to help drainage, while the banks along the water have been trimmed back as a further safety measure. The works began in January but will be halted in the spring to respect the biological cycle of wildlife and the laying of eggs.

Town gets €1.4 million face lift MIJAS Council has invested €1.4 million in the improvement of around 100 streets in the area. Councillor for Works and Operational Services, Jose Carlos Martin, said: “We continue to work to ensure that the infrastructure in our town is in perfect condition. “Through our range of plans in place we are improving the quality of life of residents.” Thanks to these initiatives the works have been able to cover 16 km of public roads and 6,000 square metres of parking. Along with main streets, the restructuring has also involved pavements, pipelines, public lighting, telecommunications and electricity.

UK government to propose expat voting rights by Tom Woods MPs in Westminster have debated the Overseas Electors Bill, introduced by Conservative Glyn Davies MP. Current law bars British expats from voting in UK elections once they have lived abroad for 15 years. The Bill would remove this time limit and give an estimated three million overseas electors the right to vote. Minister for the Constitution, Chloe Smith, said: “At the moment, British citizens who live overseas find themselves abruptly disenfranchised after they have lived abroad for 15 years, even when they feel closely connected to our country and

want to take part in elections that can affect them like any other citizen. “These are our fellow citizens and they have every right to be involved in our country and its choice of government.” The government is hoping for cross-party support for the Bill, which is based a pledge in its manifesto to grant ‘Votes for Life’ (VFL) to expats. The introduction of online registration in 2014 made the process much easier and triggered a significant increase in participation from those overseas. Since then, British expats have voted in increasing numbers and figures from June 2017 showed that the highest ever total had registered to vote. As well as removing the time limit, the govern-

ment intends to enfranchise any overseas electors who were previously resident or registered to vote in the UK. Mrs Smith added: “Decisions taken by the UK government still affect expats, such as pensions policy or foreign affairs choices. “Expats retain strong links with the UK, they may have family here and indeed may plan to return here in the future.” The bill was passed and has moved through to the committee stage where detailed examination of its clauses will take place.

By John Smith AS long ago as 1987 an in principle agreement was reached between Britain and Spain for joint use of the runway in Gibraltar but this plan was opposed by the Gibraltar government. Later, when a decision was made to build a new terminal in Gibraltar, the concept of joint access was again raised, not intending joint sovereignty, but operating similarly to Geneva airport with separate access from Spain and Gibraltar. The one main difference would have been passport control as Gibraltar is not part of the Schengen Agreement, so each side would have had to have their own immigration checks and as a shared international airport there was talk of subsidised flights to Ceuta. In the event, this option fell through as much it is believed due to Spanish intransigency as opposition from Gibraltar.

The new terminal opened and some flights to both Barcelona and Madrid were introduced but were soon suspended due to lack of demand. From then on, flights operated to the UK only, apart from the odd charter to Malta and more recently f lights to Tangier and

Casablanca in Morocco. Now, the Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis has announced that as part of the Brexit negotiations his government wants to resurrect the concept of a shared airport terminal, and also see tougher crackdown on smuggling, even though the bulk of drugs come from

Morocco directly to La Linea, or from South America in containers to Algeciras. When Mr Dastis replaced former right winger Margallo as Foreign Minister it was thought that the former diplomat would be less ‘aggressive’ than his predecessor, but since taking over the ministerial position, he does appear to be adept at saying one thing and then doing another. Following the Spanish Foreign Minister’s comments, the Gibraltar government responded explaining that Gibraltar and the United Kingdom continue to work closely together as they prepare to leave the European Union. The longstanding position of Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar is that it remains ready to engage in technical discussions with all interested parties, including Spain, in this regard. The sovereignty of Gibraltar is not a matter for discussion. The joint management of the air terminal, on a purely commercial

basis, between Gibraltar and Spanish business interests was provided for in the agreement signed at Cordoba in 2006 between the then Governments of Gibraltar, the United Kingdom and Spain. This did not happen because Spain has not yet given effect to this agreement. As a matter of information, the relevant clause in the 2006 Cordoba Agreement on Gibraltar airport reads as follows: “All passenger and flight services including all facilities and functions relating to airside and aircraft services, passengers’ check-in, baggage handling and passenger and baggage security will be provided in and by the terminal. “Subject to EU directives, the Government of Gibraltar will grant a contractual concession to operate the terminal and provide these services on a commercial basis to a joint venture company owned by Gibraltar and Spanish commercial interests.”

ACOSOL wants to expand the use of recycled water to street cleaning in a move that could be extended throughout the Costa del Sol. The management of the company has held a meeting with the council of the 11 affected municipalities to propose the idea, in an effort to prepare for the difficulties that a drought may bring in the coming months. Currently recycled water

is only used for the irrigation of golf courses, and the initiative requires the approval of the Junta de Andalucia which has not yet responded to the request. A network of reservoirs could be constructed in the plans, with the recycled and treated water being transported through pipes from there. It is believed that the Junta is examining whether the recycled water would meet the necessary sanitary standards, before making a decision.

Frenchman to face trial for kidnap and torture OFFICERS from the National Police have arrested a Frenchman in Marbella using a European Arrest Warrant issued by his home country. The suspect, from Nantes,

is accused of kidnapping and torture in the same city. Sources indicate that three other criminals were involved in abducting a man in December 2017, before subjecting

him to burns, beatings and even amputating a finger. The incident is believed to be drugs related, with the suspect facing a heavy prison sentence.

Plans surfacing for new swimming pool A NEW indoor swimming pool is planned by Estepona Council for the town. The local authority has begun preparations on drafting a tender for the project’s construction work. Indeed a reservation has been made in the 2018 municipal budget for the pool, but given other priorities like Estepona hospital and the athletics stadium, the works will not be immediate. It is anticipated that the installation can begin in early 2019, in the vicinity of the San Fernando football field. The town currently has three swimming pools, Santo Tomas de Aquino, Cancelada, and Jose Ramon de la Morena sports centre, which the council owns. The council said that it is proud of its record on providing quality sports facilities for the community, which is also part of efforts to make tourism less seasonal.

A TOUCH OF CLASS is a variety group that perform shows all along the Costa del Sol raising money for various charities. They have a busy schedule this year and are always looking for new members. No experience is required just a desire to help others and any age is welcomed. The troupe gives you the chance to learn stage craft, sing, dance, act, help with back

stage or publicity. In addition, being par t of the group gives you an amazing way to keep fit, both mentally and physically as well as lots of

fun and laughter. In return, you give up your time to help raise money for local charities. Rehearsals are Monday at the Manila Bar in Los Boliches and Thursday at Lux Mundi in Fuengirola, both at 6.45pm.

THE sexual assault committed two weeks ago, for which a young man was arrested, has reignited concerns about security in La Nogalera. Residents and businesses are demanding that more action is taken, and would like to see a greater police presence on the streets. This popular area of Torremolinos has a layout that is believed to attract criminals, with narrow alleyways surrounding many of the bars and clubs. A number of bar owners in the area are calling for more police support at closing time, while the spate of robberies has also left the public on guard.

A network of security cameras has been proposed by several businessmen, but this is still being considered. Another problem appears to be the lack of complaints to police filed by victims after attacks, due to fear of the aggressors. The project has stalled since 2010 and Councillor Felix Romero has implored the regional government to “fulfill all its promises” so that “Marbella can have the hospital it really needs.”

Tourism property at risk of a fine mess ONLINE holiday rental platforms advertising illegal accommodation for tourists are facing fines of up to €150,000. If the properties are not on the books of the Tourism Registry of Andalucia, they are putting themselves at serious risk of legal action. The regulations governing housing in relation to tourists have been in force for two years, and stipulate that all owners in this area must display their registration code in all advertising and promotions.

Malaga Province holds 18,107 registered tourist f lats but others are in danger of falling foul of the law even if they think they have registered, through administrative errors. Inspections that have already been carried out have resulted in 3,397 sanctions in Andalucia, of which 1,354 fall within Malaga Province. Basic requirements for properties to meet the quality standards include full furnishings, air conditioning, heating, and first aid kit.

Dune dispute MARBELLA Council has asked the Junta de Andalucia to speed up the inclusion of the El Pinillo dunes in the province’s protected dunes system. The council initially made the request in 2016 and says the delay shows the regional government’s “lack of interest.”

The latest insult is a peer’s impudent demand that the retired elderly should do community work or lose their pensions. Lord Bichard, or Baron Bichard to you serfs, has never been employed in a proper job. A career politician, he retired at 54 after a lifetime spent in local government. Bichard’s family background and his personal life are off the radar. Another of your betters is Professor Martin Weale who said the peer ‘makes an interesting point.’ This number-crunching parasite is a member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee. When it was suggested to the peer that it might be difficult to sell the idea to the plebs the baron sneered, “It was difficult to sell education tuition fees to them too.” The General Secretary of the National Pensioners Convention says: “His suggestion amounts to little more than national service for the over 60’s and is

The elderly should get rewards and fines to make sure they are taking a

more active part in the world.” Presumably, such conscripted labour will wait hand and foot on illegal immigrants in refugee hostels. The less able can knit their woollies for them. The brazen toff suggested the same tough attitude towards benefit scroungers should be taken with the elderly retired. He forgets that the most brazen benefit bandits infest parliament and the so-called Lords. With considerable chutzpah he adds, “We’re prepared to say to people if you’re not looking for work, you don’t get a benefit. If you’re old and you’re not contributing in some way, maybe

there should be some penalty attached to that. These debates never seem to take place.” Let the words of James Larkin sink in: “The great only appear great because we are on our knees. Let us rise.” Larkin, an Irish revolutionary, died in 1947. Obviously, we plebeians took not a blind bit of notice. Still on our knees, are we not deserving of our miserable existence. Our fate is self-inflicted; we could change it but we won’t. Unsurprisingly, those who consider us steerage class keep spitting into our faces.

Present perfect practice IT´S always an interesting challenge finding ways of practising the language that we learn. Here is a piece of text I wrote a couple of years ago which is a summary of that year. It was written in December which is a time when everyone takes stock of the past year, including the television channels. It’s when they tell you that soand-so died this summer and you are absolutely amazed because you thought he’d been dead at least 10 years already. So here is my own summary of the year, but I hasten to add that this is not going to be an exercise in translation or any other kind of boring revision. All you have to do is read it, and hopefully you will understand every, or nearly every, word. That’s the idea, anyway. Este año he trabajado mucho, como siempre. Mis hijas no conocen Londres mucho, así que es una buena oportunidad para ellas.

Mi gata ha tenido un año muy normal. Ha comido, ha dormido, ha comido, ha dormido, ha comido, ha dormido. Este otoño ha sido una época un poco complicada para mí. Rebel with no pause by Barry Duke

ONE phrase guaranteed to send me into a frenzy when I was a teenager was ‘you can whistle for that.’ It invariably came after my parents flatly refused me things I desperately wanted: an Elvis haircut, stovepipe pants, winkle-picker shoes, tattoos, a motorbike and anything else that would make me stand out as a pocket-sized hoodlum. The main reason those words annoyed me so much was because I simply could not whistle. As much as wanting to look like a rebel, I craved the capacity to do what my best friend Douglas Brown could. With a thumb and middle finger in his mouth, he could emit a sound loud enough to splinter glass. My yearning to acquire a talent for whistling was matched only by my desire to

lodge a cigarette behind one ear. However, nature, rather than my parents, militated against me in that regard. While all my friends had small, sexy lugs nestling close to their skulls and could thus snugly accommodate fags, my ears protruded to such a degree that I could probably have parked a carton of Lucky Strikes in either cleft and still have space for a couple of Crunchie bars. I looked like a Mini Cooper with its doors wide open. Why would I want to put a cigarette behind one ear? Because I reckoned it looked cool. (Today it’s dismissed as chavvy.) But growing one’s hair long in the 60’s was a pretty cool thing to do too, so that’s what I did to disguise my ostentatious flaps. This, of course, was also regarded as an act of rebellion, but I cared not a jot because my hero then was James Dean, and although I looked nothing like him, I was determined to emulate his bad boy, to-hell-with-authority attitude. I should have grown out of that phase, but never did. Instead the rebellious streak in me widened. They say that once one passes 40, your narrow waist and broad mind change places, but in my case that never happened. “The trouble with you,” a young fogey told

WHISTLING: Not easy for everyone. me when I hit 63 and was doing 230 pressups in 20-minute sessions, three times a week in a gym, “is that you’re an adolescent trapped in a man’s body.” He was right, of course. And this was confirmed this week when my boyhood frustration at not being able to whistle came roaring back when I was out walking our dogs Bijou and Fifi in a nearby field. One of my Spanish neighbours let his dog off the leash and it took off into the woods like a missile. Ignacio let loose a piercing whistle and the animal stopped dead in its tracks and came bounding back. “That’s it,” I snarled and rushed back to my desk to see what the internet had to say about learning to whistle. To my delight I discovered YouTube has a number of tutorials. But by far the best was created by Andy Ino, a VERY attractive young man with small, sexy ears, who entertainingly demonstrates

precisely how to emit the perfect whistle. Alas, my elation was short-lived. Despite spending 30 minutes curling my tongue, folding back my lips and putting two fingers in my mouth, all I could produce were sounds that suggested a severe asthma attack, and bewildered looks from our pooches. Reading the comments below the video, I saw that I wasn’t Andy’s only failure. “I did every step and it didn’t work,” said one commenter. Others said all they could produce was saliva, and one claimed to have vomited! But it worked for some. “Ahhaha it only took me 15 minutes to learn haha” and “21 seconds into the video then I was able to do it,” said two others, to my intense annoyance. As I have now moved on from old-school fags to vaping, I will now try lodging a bulky electronic cigarette behind one ear, but my instincts tell me that, even if I were to succeed, this would not be a good look.

THERE is a week to thrill all lovers of West End and Broadway musicals this March when the popular Stars of the West End return to the coast for a five-date tour. An entertaining two-hour show, featuring the most popular songs from the best loved musical theatre. Musicals like The Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins, Oliver, Les Misérables, Wicked, West Side Story and more can be seen in five venues from Torre del Mar to Marbella. AUTHOR David Searl will sign copies of the new 2018 Edition of his book You & the Law in Spain on Thursday March 8 from 5pm to 8pm at Bookworld Puerto Banus. Spamalot has the stamp of approval.

Monty Python’s Spamalot PLAY TIME: Councillor for Culture Gema Midon announced the initiative. WORLD THEATRE DAY will be commemorated in San Pedro de Alcantara with a programme of 11 free plays. The concept is entitled ‘Feel the Theatre’ and is open to all audiences, running from Saturday to March 27.

Companies from across the country will take part, and the performances will cater for children, teenagers and adults alike. To see the shows for free, two tickets for each person can be collected at the box office one hour before the start of each play.

THE Salon Varietes in Fuengirola is brave enough to take on the musical Spamalot based on the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. With book and lyrics by Eric Idle and music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle this irreverent but highly amusing musical will run from Friday March 16 to Sunday March 25 with curtain up at 7.30pm except Sunday at 7pm. www.thelittlegeranium.com WITH Mother’s Day looming and many restaurants already fully booked (we still have some tables!) I’m going to start sharing with you some ideas for a family lunch

at home, both this week and next. My first thought was a sharing dish, a tempura is a delicious dish that you can do with large prawns or vegetables or both mixed. It works really well with mushrooms and asparagus for example. The reason I’ve picked this recipe is because whenever I prepare tempura for my cookery school my students flag it up as one of the things that they have loved cooking and eating the most. The first time that I ever cooked a tempura was in Bangkok. I was on my honeymoon (with my first wife) and we were sitting by the pool. I got up and wandered off. I spotted a chef and walked over to

Tempura ingredients: • Plain flour: 100g • Egg: 1 • Cold water: 200cc • Baking Soda: 1 teaspoon • Potato Starch: 2 tablespoons Or • Optional and easier • 200g of tempura flour (from most supermarkets) • 200cc of iced cold sparkling water • Seasoning • A few cubes of ice • A tablespoon of olive oil • Your choice of vegetables, seafoods and mushrooms such as aubergine, onion, capsicum, green beans, carrot, okra, asparagus, prawn, white fish and squid. • Oil (sunflower or corn for frying)

Make the tempura batter • Mix plain flour, baking soda and potato starch together and then sift mixed flour as preparation. • Crack an egg into the bowl and beat it roughly. Add the cold water and mix them. • Put 1/3 mixed flour in to egg mixture and gently mix. Long cooking chop sticks are the best utensil for mixing tempura batter. If you do not have them, use a fork instead. • Then add an additional 1/3 flour and mix. • And finally add the last 1/3 flour and mix. • Alternatively use the pre-mix tempura flour and add the cold sparkling water, some ice cubes and seasoning and the olive oil • Important: Lumps in the flour is fine. Do not mix it too much as you will get a lot of gluten which makes it heavy and creates an ‘un-crispy’ tempura batter.

When I got into the kitchen I was given a jacket to wear and told to help the lady chef make a tempura batter. I whisked the flour and water until it was silky smooth, she shouted at me … “No! You need lump.” “What?” I said ... “Lump … must have lump, better for wegetables” and she poured more flour in and mixed it with long chopsticks. She was right because the little flour lumps in the batter make the tempura in-

teresting with little crispy pieces surrounding each prawn or the vegetable. I honestly had not understood what she was saying, I was only 23 bless. Every time I mix a tempura I hear her shouting.. “You need lump!” Anyway when I got back to the pool, Sally (my ex) said “Where the hell have you been? I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Once a chef always a chef.” No wonder the marriage didn’t work! This is a great sharing dish ideal for a family lunch starter, quick and easy to prepare. You could put a large dish of tempura prawns and vegetables in the centre of the table with a variety of dips and let everyone get on with it. Perfect!

Authentic tempura prawns and vegetables Prepare the ingredients Use the freshest ingredients you can find and cut them into pieces roughly the same size to avoid uneven cooking.

Prawn preparation • Take off the head and shell, but keep the tail. • Remove the vein. • Cut into the underneath of each prawn with a small incision to stop the prawn curling up when you fry it • Toss prepared prawns/ vegetables in flour (any flour) first until completely coated

Frying the prawns / vegetables • Heat the fryer or a pan/wok of vegetable oil to 190C • Take the prawns from the flour and dip them into the prepared tempura batter holding onto the tail • Put them one by one into the hot fryer and move the basket (or move the prawns with a slotted spoon) to avoid them sticking together • Fry for one minute until golden • Drain onto tissue paper • Season with salt and some mixed spices (optional) • Serve on plate with various dips.

SINCE packing away my directorial baton and discontinuing my theatrical activities, it has been five long years of having nothing to do each evening other than entertaining friends at al fresco nights spent around the garden bar (sigh). Sampling an assortment of unfamiliar wines found in far flung bodegas (yawn), discovering interesting new restaurants (ho hum), or simply curled up during the winter months, catching up with must-see movies on our wide screen TV. It’s been a hard slog. But once again I find myself dusting off the beat-up fedora hat and Dr Who scarf, and brandishing my Malacca silver-tipped cane in order to direct two of four plays that are to be performed at the beginning of March in Benijofar. I have, in all seriousness, enjoyed the freedom from rehearsal nights, but equally seriously I now realise, I have missed the feelings of anticipation and adrenaline rush that begins as opening night approaches. And because I

He worked with colleagues at University College London, and conducted an online survey of over 5,000 people in 96 different countries about their relationship break ups. Their findings showed while discovering an unfaithful partner could have negative shortterm effects, in the long run it actually benefited women.

SMARTPHONES are being linked to giving users similar symptoms to ADHD. Constantly checking messages and being on social media, as well as the continual beeps of notifications, is making people increasingly distracted and hyperactive; symptoms that characterise Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. A study was conducted with students at the University of British Columbia, Canada. During the first week, they asked half the participants to minimise phone interruptions by activating the ‘donot disturb’ settings and keeping their phones out of

sight and far from reach. The other half could use their phones normally. In the second week, the groups swapped and all reported they felt more interrupted by their phones when they had their phone alerts on, as opposed to having them off. Scientists then measured inattentiveness and hyperactivity by asking participants to identify how frequently they had experienced 18 symptoms of ADHD over each of the two weeks. The results showed more frequent phone interruptions made people less attentive and more hyperactive.

RAFAEL NADAL has suffered yet another injury setback as he withdrew late on from the ATP 500 event in Acapulco. The World Number Two was due to make his comeback at the ATP event in Mexico, having not featured since retiring injured against Martin Cilic in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. The Spaniard was set to face fellow countryman Feliciano Lopez on Tuesday but was forced to pull out late on after a recurrence of a hip injury. Speaking to the media, the 31-year-old explained he does not know the full extent of his injury but hopes it is only a minor issue. He said: “My goal and hope was to play in this tournament. THIS year’s Geneva Motor Show is just around the corner. Kicking off next Thursday, the first major European motor show of the year is once again set to feature a raft of new production cars and concepts. The 10-day industry showcase is now in its 88th year, and 2018 is set to be the biggest yet. Among the most anticipated new cars is British sports stalwart Aston Martin’s new Vantage, while the company is also expected to reveal its latest World Endurance Championship GTE Vantage race car and has hinted there may be a surprise in store for visitors. Ferrari is due to bring its recently unveiled GTOapeing 488 Pista to the event, while Land Rover has confirmed that the limited edition 70th anniversary two-door Range Rover SV Coupe - currently known only from a top-down interior photo - will make its official debut. Other debutants are likely to include updated versions of Volvo’s V60 Wagon estate, Kia’s Ceed, Hyundai’s Santa Fe, Audi’s A6, BMW’s X4 and Z4, Porsche’s 911 GT3 RS, Mercedes’ A-class and AMG GT Coupe, Jeep Wrangler and the Lexus Ux, while Toyota is expected to show a new racing concept based on the latest Supra. A slew of new electric models will also be on display, including the Hyundai Nexo, Jaguar I-Pace, Porsche Mission E, Volkswagen ID Vizzion, and Smart Fortwo EQ, plus the new Formula E race car. As usual, there will also be a handful of jaw-dropping vehicles to look at, from the 789 bhp road legal McLaren Senna, all 500 of which have already been sold, to the stunning Polestar 1 coupe and the wacky Rinspeed Snap.
