PATIENTS at the Costa del Sol Hospital have benefited from a training scheme designed to inform them about how to live with breast cancer. About 15 people participated in lessons given by the Patients School over the past two weeks. The project was developed last year with the training of women who wanted to become expert teachers to help others cope with the different stages of the illness. In this way the lessons became a space for sharing personal experiences and the exchange of a wealth of useful information. During the workshops, attendees have learned to add more structure to their daily lives, and the setting of more goals to improve quality of life. Food, physical exercise, rest, friendships and coping with chemotherapy were some of the topics covered in detail. The fact that this year women are being trained by former patients who have been in the exact same situation, has been revelatory. They are finding the issues being discussed in their own language, without technical jargon and with real sensitivity and understanding. The written and audiovisual materials used in the workshops are easily comprehensible, interesting and informative. The Patients School is an initiative of the Ministry of Health, and free materials can be downloaded via the website: www.escueladepacientes.es.
Box of puppies dumped on charity AN animal charity has launched an appeal after a box full of puppies was dumped on their doorstep in southern Spain. Seven were left in the middle of the lane just outside PAD’s shelter, which is close to a main road that they could have easily wandered onto. In a Facebook post calling for help, PAD said the puppies, believed to be just sevenweeks-old, are in danger of catching lethal viruses and need to be vaccinated urgently. The president of PAD Lisa Emeny spoke to the RTN and voiced her disbelief upon finding out they had been dumped outside the shelter’s door. “I was lost for words, how can they sleep at night after dumping these babies in a box and walking away? “I cannot stress the importance of neutering your dogs. All of this can so easily be avoided,” Lisa said. The shelter is on the Cerros del Aguila road in Mijas just behind the Veterinario RoyalVet.

THE Popular Party (PP) in Mijas has publicly backed municipal sports service workers, who staged a two-day strike on Monday and Wednesday in protest at increased privatisation. It is the first strike in the history of the locality, signalling a political crisis for Mijas Council. The PP blames Sports Councillor Nuria Rodriguez for the unprecedented situation, claiming that her actions reveal a contempt for the workers involved. It believes that the decision to privatise sport services in the area has been rushed, is unjustified and against the interests of Mijas residents. The PP also claims that the move will cost the council an extra €1.5 million annually, as well as putting at risk the jobs of municipal sports service workers. Mayor Diego Maldonado has been called upon to sack Rodriguez and suspend the privatisation process immediately.

He was actually arrested at the end of September as part of an ongoing investigation by the Guardia Civil into the activities of what is referred to as the Russian Mafia on the Costa del Sol, which involved the arrest of 11 people. Despite the negative connotations involved with their president being arrested, it appears that the fans and staff of the football club are supporting him fully and have welcomed him back to assume his old role in the workings of the club.

Young woman reports sexual assault OFFICERS of the National Police are investigating allegations of the rape of a 29-year-old woman in an alley in La Nogalera, Torremolinos. The victim went to a h e a l t h c e n t r e i n To r r e molinos, from where she was referred to the High Resolution hospital centre of Benalmadena, which has specialist facilities for sexual assault. She has reported that the incident happened in the early hours of last Sunday morning, after being approached by a stranger. No arrests have currently been made and investigators are working off the account of the young woman, although she did not know the aggressor.

MARBELLA Council will be distributing 30,000 copies of the educational booklet ‘Marbella Natural’ to publicise the flora and fauna of the locality. Environment Councillor, Manuel Cardeña, explained: “they are informative publications that are not just for the educational community but for wider society, with the aim of spreading awareness of our environmental wealth.” In addition, special ‘Nature Outings’ are being planned to show people the kind of plants, flowers and creatures that the booklets describe. The main author of the booklets, Jesus Duarte, revealed that the first three are related to urban birds, orchids and mushrooms. He said: “This is an important project because it is not only a natural resource but also a tourism promotion tool.” Duarte added that Marbella city contains most of the 40 species of orchids found in the wider province.

M ARBELL A has become something of a magnet for football teams looking to undertake winter training prior to their participation in the next rounds of the UEFA Europa League. Teams who have been observed in training have come from countries with much harsher winters than here on the Costa del Sol, and include three from Russia and one each from Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Sweden and Ukraine. Probably the most high profile team is that of Borussia Dortmund, who are currently in third place in the Bundesliga and are previous winners of the cup which they took in 1997.

Putting the wind in their sales FUENGIROLA Council is promoting a new initiative to encourage sales of local commerce in light of a difficult period for traders. Councillor for Commerce, Ricardo von Wichmann, is overseeing the project that is designed to help shops get rid of excess stock by offering discounts, before receiving a rebate from the public purse. In order to take part, businesses must pick up an application form the town hall or download it from the council’s website at www.fuen
g i ro l a. es an d emai l i t t o comer cio@fuengirola.org. The deadline for submitting the application is Tuesday and the council is urging traders across all sectors to register. To publicise the initiative, which will take place from March 8 to 10, posters and brochures will be distributed across the town which will include the details of all participating businesses. An advertising campaign will also be carried out through social media, radio and television.

Man arrested for supplying drugs

POLICE have arrested a man accused of supplying a cocktail of drugs to two girls, who ended up in hospital. The girls, aged 13 and 18, were taken to the Costa del Sol hospital in Marbella in a serious condition, with one of them reportedly close to cardiac arrest. The teenagers tested posi-
tive for cocaine, cannabis, methadone and benzodiazepine, which they had allegedly taken at the home of the suspect, who is a neighbour. According to police sources, the detainee is around 41years-of-age and even offered to have sex in exchange for the drugs, although the girls
apparently did not accept. Officers searched the home of the man who is a known dr ug addict and found a range of narcotics. The girls were discharged from hospital two days later but the investigation remains open, pending the possibility of more children who have taken the drugs.

AFTER some considerable debate as how best to cope with what was becoming a dangerous problem, Manilva Council took the decision to demolish a deteriorating property. According to Antonio Barragan, councillor responsible for town planning, much discussion had taken place over the past few months concerning the potential danger to passersby and other residents off Calle Iglesias. As the property was becoming more dilapidated, it was decided to obtain a demolition order and this having been obtained, the bulldozers moved in. Although no specific plan exists for the use of the land, it is considered likely that it will be landscaped and zoned as a small park or green open space. The councillor said “the

security of our neighbours comes above all else, and although it was a complicated matter to solve, we have achieved it and now we want to create an area of leisure that citizens can enjoy.�

Doorman pays the price for assault A NIGHTCLUB doorman has been sentenced to nine months in prison for severely beating a man in L o s A l a m o s , To r r e m o l i nos. The man has also been ordered to pay â‚Ź28,000 to the victim, who sustained a number of injuries in the incident. According to the judge, the ag gressor had received no provocation and
simply punched the victim hard in the face before continuing to beat him on the ground. The attack happened outside the cocktail bar where the doorman w o r k e d , o n t h e Pa s e o Maritimo de Los Alamos. The victim suffered a cranial and facial fracture with trauma in the assault and is permanently scarred.

Hikers rescued near La Concha mountain TWO hikers have been rescued after losing their way coming back from scaling La Concha mountain in Marbella. Firefighters were able to get to the scene and locate the young climbers, after they had relayed their location from a mobile phone. When darkness fell, they could not find the right path and became completely disoriented. However, it only took the firefighters an hour to find them and thankfully the young hikers were in good health so no medical treatment was required.

A MAN’s body has been found floating in the water in the port of Cabopino. The Andalucia Emergency
Service received a call from a member of the public who saw the corpse about 200 metres from the shore and in front of a beach bar in the harbour. The Coordination Centre immediately activated Mar-
itime Rescue, the Guardia Civil, the Local Police, the National Police and the Public Health Emergencies group. Guardia Civil sources have confirmed that the man was of sub-Saharan origin and are investigating his death.
Sounding the Gong for exercise FUENGIROLA Council has announced that classes for the Chinese gymnastics discipline Qi Gong are to be extended to the Santa Fe stadium. Councillor for Sports, Pedro Cuevas, said: “Qi Gong is very well suited for those seeking physical activity to improve their health in a series of movements, breathing exercises and mental concentration. “It already has many followers in our town but we want to expand participation to benefit the wider population.” Qi Gong, which began in China around 4,000 years ago, has been
supported by the council for the last 10 years. Rocio Perez Aragones, a teacher of Qi Gong, said of the discipline: “It is very useful for destressing, improving sleep and strengthening the body at muscular, bone and joint level. “I invite all the people of Fuengirola to come and try a class and if they like it, join us.” Registration for a class can be made at the sports department in the Elola sports stadium. The price is €12 for Fuengirola residents and €20 for those based outside.
Car crash leaves five injured FIVE people, including two children have been injured in a collision between two cars in the Puente de la Pasada, Mijas. The emergency services received a call from a member of the public reporting the inci dent, and they immediately notified the Guardia Civil Trafico, the Local Police and Mijas Fire Brigade. All those involved were taken to the Costa del Sol Hospital for treatment last Tuesday. Health workers have confirmed that the five injured comprised two men of 76 and 31 years of age, a woman of 33 and two children aged eight and two.

British expats to be given right to vote THE British government has announced that it is changing the law to give British expatriates who have lived abroad for more than 15 years the right to vote. As well as removing the time limit on the right to vote for UK citizens living abroad, the government intends to enfranchise any expatriates who were previously resident or registered to vote in the UK. Currently only British citizens who registered to vote before leaving the UK may apply to become overseas electors. The changes will mean millions of hitherto disenfranchised expatriates becoming eligible to vote in UK parliamentary elections. The government published the policy statement ‘A democracy that works for everyone: British citizens overseas’ in October 2016, asking for views on its plans to introduce votes for life. Its response to the consultation has been published on www.gov.uk ahead of the second reading of the Overseas Electors Bill, tabled by Glyn Davies MP, next Friday. Chloe Smith, Britain’s Constitution Minister, said: “Participation in our democracy is a fundamental part of being British, no matter how far you have travelled from the UK. “It is right that we should remove the 15 year time limit on voting rights of British citizens living overseas and allow those who previously lived in the UK the chance to participate in our democracy,” she said. “Expatriates retain strong links with the UK: they may have a family here and indeed they may plan to return here in the future.”

MARBELLA mayor, Angeles Muñoz, has publicly supported the campaign of the Adahimar association to raise awareness for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children.
Man sentenced for strangling his own sister with cable A M A N h a s b e e n s e n te n ce d to 2 0 years in prison for strangling his sister with an iron cable. Of Moroccan nationality, the killer has also been ordered to pay €150,000 to the two sons of the victim. T he incident occur red at the victim’s home in Torremolinos, where

her and causing her death . After the incident the man changed clothes and left the house, failing to answer the numerous calls made to him by his nephew, the son of the victim. Later the man called the police and confessed to the murder.
She praised the work of the group in “responding to many families in which there are children with this disorder and they do not know how to deal with it.” Muñoz added that “although much progress has been made in this area, there is more work to do to recognise ADHD and address the problems that may arise in adolescence.” Adahimar’s secretary, Concha Munuera, thanked the council for its support and revealed that the association plans to distribute bracelets with the slogan: ‘Help us to make visible the invisible.’
High court rules in residents’ favour THE Andalucian High Court, TSJA, has cancelled a financial plan involving infrastructure in part of the Torreblanca area of Fuengirola. The move comes in response to an appeal filed by home owners in a case that dates back to 2011. This ruling means that residents in Lomas de Torreblanca do not have to pay for infrastructure improvements drawn up by the Junta de Andalucia regional government and Fuengirola Council. The council said that it was expecting this outcome and that it supported the cause of the residents who appealed the case.

A LORRY that was travelling on the A7 motorway between Benalmadena and Malaga, caught fire for unknown reasons. The lorry came to a halt in the right hand lane, closing that part of the motorway last Tuesday evening. Firefighters arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire, and fortunately there were no injuries. The lorry itself sustained extensive damage.

Lidl to invest €12 million in new superstore L AS L AGUNAS continues to enjoy a boom in development and has been boosted by the news that Lidl will invest €12 million in a two-storey superstore there. The German international chain has acquired a privately owned plot of land for the venture on Calle Robles.
W hile the area is technically residential land, Lidl is confident that it can legally convert it for commercial use. Initial discussions indicate that the Junta de Andalucia regional government would welcome the change, as it would provide some divergence from
the density of housing in the vicinity. It is expected that the opening of the superstore in mid-2019 will lead to the direct creation of 50 jobs. Part of the development plan will involve the construction of a new pedestrian street in Las Lagunas, which is expected to be popular with locals.

MARBELLA mayor, Angeles Muñoz , is prepar ing to put for ward the Local Association of Civil Protection Volunteers for a City Medal. She has highlighted the “essential work” carried o u t b y t h e g ro u p i n t h e locality, which has “contributed to the safety and security of all citizens.” Mayor Muñoz commented that in its 32 years of histor y the volunteers have “accumulated more than enough merits to have earned this award, in fact it is the least we can do for them.” She also noted the regular presence of Civil Protection volunteers in emergency situations, as well as their participation in humanitarian work both nationwide and internationally. THE desalination factory in Marbella, which has an emergency water supply when the Concepcion Gravity dam and reservoir is emptied, is to undergo modernisation works. Water companies Acuamed and Acosol have signed an agreement to the project, which will involve an investment of more than €4 million spread over the next 13 years. The plant is a ‘lifeline’ for the Costa del Sol in times of drought, but the cost of its electricity bill is heavy. Improvement works will therefore be aimed at energy saving to reduce costs. One of the production lines will be replaced, saving nearly five million kilowatts per year in electricity, the equivalent of €323,000.

Alongside energy efficiency, the project will also renovate the pre-treatment and seawater pumping facilities. Margarita del Cid, Leader of the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol, said: “The works will mean an improvement in the efficiency of the factory,
with the environmental advantage that brings as well as significant cost savings, freeing up resources for other important investments.” The 17-year-old desalination plant is relied on by 400,000 people in the low season, and up to 1.2 million people in the summer.

never recovered. Unfortunately for them, evidence suggests that the rare coins were a fiction and the investment reports they received from the woman were forged.

The Citizen Security Delegation has obtained 100 LED flashlights, which will be delivered to each of the officers in a case which apart from the multifunction torch contains a battery charger and other useful items such as flashing coloured lenses for road control. To add to this, each member of the force will be given a personalised leather wallet which will hold each officer’s digital identity card. The icing on the cake for the force will be their very own vehicle immobiliser with which they can clamp any car that is parked illegally. The Councillor for Citizen Security, Mercedes Serrano when presenting the new equipment explained that the town was anxious to ensure that the Local Police force was given the most up-todate technology and the council is also arranging for improvements to the officer’s headquarters.

Peter’s odd and curious world

AS this may be the first of a monthly column, perhaps I should introduce myself. I was born with a passionate interest in all things old, especially old coins. My Grandfather was the same, he collected everything, much to my Grandmother’s dismay. His gift of a number of Georgian and Victorian coins was the spur that became a lifetime interest, eventually becoming my profession. Archaeology, astronomy, the cosmos, evolution, the history of the human race, in fact anything I hear, see or read that piques my interest or curiosity I like to note down. So, to start this month off here’s a small random selection. ET, a visitor from another world, arrived and departed. First spotted by the PanStarrs telescope on Hawaii last October, the asteroid’s speed between 60 and 80,000 mph and its odd trajectory, excluded its origin being within our Solar System. An interstellar visitor, long expected, it was the first to be identified. Its long cigarshape was unlike any other known asteroid. Old Spanish bones Over 1,600 bones found in a cave in

I discovered that a legend spread through the Roman world that Cleopatra’s physician had used a knife to remove the infant from the womb, a procedure well known in ancient times, but one which saved the baby but caused the death of the mother. Hence the portrait, the infant and the knife. The persistence of this legend has lent its name to this particular method of birth. Modern gynaecologists poo-poo this as there are no records of a successful Caesarean birth before the mid-19th century. But ancient medicinal texts dating to 1,600 BC show that surgeons knew that certain herbs ground to a paste and secured over a wound reduced bacterial infection. So who knows? Cracking the code IT was recently revealed that a secret code used by Spanish King Ferdinand II and his top military commander more than 500 years ago had been cracked by the Spanish National Intelligence Centre (CNI). The special code reportedly contained more than 200 unique characters, but no one had been able to decipher the meaning of the letters for hundreds of years, as the table used by the king to create the code had been lost. The Army Museum in Toledo provided the CNI with two letters, which dated from the time of the second French invasion of Naples (controlled by the Spanish at the time) to help them decipher the meaning of the symbols. The achievement, which was described by Spanish media as solving ‘one of the great mysteries in the history of Spain’, has led me to thinking: What if there’s a secret code embedded in the tweets of US President Donald Trump that’s es-
caping us all as we scoff at their nonsensical content? Will historians in 500 years time unveil the true meaning behind ‘covfefe’? Could the infamous wall - still to be built between Mexico and the US - actually be referring to something entirely more sinister? Perhaps the existence of a parallel universe, existing alongside our own, that has yet to be revealed. In that context, the tweet: ‘The wall, which is already under construction in the form of new renovation of old and existing fences and walls, will continue to be built’ would perhaps make more sense. After all, who knows the kind of secret information Trump is privy to and forbidden to let out. This would give even the most secretive of people twitchy fingers. It must be driving him crazy, hence: ‘Are we living in Nazi Germany’? Let’s just hope we crack the code before he pushes the ‘Little Rocket Man’ too far … PRESIDENT TRUMP: Are his tweets really a secret code?

by Tom Woods THE European Parliament has chosen Irish candidate Philip Lane ahead of Spain’s Luis De Guindos for the post of European Central Bank (ECB) Vice President. A statement by Roberto Gualtieri, Chair of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) said: “Yesterday ECON members held informal exchanges of views with the two candidates for the position as the next ECB Vice-President. “Both candidates made a
good presentation. The majority of the political groups considered Governor Lane’s performance more convincing. Some groups expressed reservations for Minister De Guindos’ appointment.” However, the European Parliament’s decision is not binding because the appointment is ultimately made at government level, where Mr De Guindos enjoys more support. The final decision will be taken by the Eurozone’s 19 national governments and is scheduled for Monday at a
meeting in Brussels. The victor will join the ECB’s six-member Executive Board in June after Portugal’s Vitor Constancio steps down, and will help to manage its extraordinary monetary stimulus. Several nations including Portugal, Malta and Slovakia have already declared their support for Mr de Guindos, while none have signalled an intention to vote for Lane. Until quite recent times it was government policy to reduce the problem by state enforced sterilisation. The United States was the first country to use compulsory sterilisation programmes for the purpose of weeding out the feeble minded. This was US policy for the first half of the 20th century. A number of American states used enforced sterilisation programmes until the 1970’s. In all, 65,000 individuals scattered across 33 states were affected, but the true figure is likely to be much higher. Mass graves have since been discov-
ered in the vicinity of America’s mental institutions. This practice inspired other countries to follow the American example. Britain was one of many nations that made use of state enforced sterilisation programmes to rid society of its mentally and physically disadvantaged. These practices were adopted by British dominions like Canada, whose policy was applied until the 1970’s. As recently as 2015 Australia was placed in the UN dock for enforced sterilisation of women with disabilities. Winston Churchill was an ardent champion of government controlled enforced sterilisation programmes. In a letter to Lord Asquith, dated December 1910, the lawmaker wrote of his passion. “The unnatural and increasingly rapid growth of the feeble-minded and insane classes, coupled as it is with a steady restriction among all the thrifty, energetic and superior stocks, constitutes a national and race danger which it is impossible to exaggerate.” Winston Churchill’s Mental Deficiency

In Britain, institutional separation of the mentally retarded or deranged has been replaced by the introduction of what is known as care in the community. The government pocketed millions when it sold off the nation’s mental hospitals and institutions. It made further savings by making tens of thousands of medical and ancillary staff redundant. In this way government abdicates responsibility for those for whom it bears responsibility. Care in the community has proved to be an unmitigated disaster, as have the
state registered care homes provided for the nation’s unfortunate children. The latter have been described as part of a supply chain to meet the needs of those whom Winston Churchill dismissed as moral defectives. Yet to be revealed are the accounts of distressed parents who have gone to terrifying lengths to avoid their children being taken from them and placed in care homes. Perhaps this will bring about a better understanding of why Britain, the US and some European nations are in a frightful mess. The inmates are certainly running the asylum for their own purposes.

AROUND 200 residents of Urbanisation La Marina came along to one of a ser ies of meetings along the Costa Blanca organised by the British Consul to gain a little more infor mation on how Brexit is likely to affect them in the future. Br itish Consul for Alicante Sarah-Jane Morris was welcomed by local councillor Paulino Herrero, along with the mayor of San Fulgencio Carlos Ramirez, who was greeted with a series of boos and jeers from a small number who took this public opportunity to express their views on his continuing tenure in the post. Also on the top table was Richard Hill from the Brexpats in Spain organisation, and between him and Sarah-Jane Morris, they explained the current state of play in the Brexit negotiations, concentrating on those aspects that would most likely apply to UK citizens living in the EU. “For those wishing to continue to be resident in Spain after the UK leave the EU, they should ensure that they are registered on the local padron and take up formal residency of the countr y,”

During the question and an-
swer session that followed, the subject of work permits postBrexit was raised. Sarah- Jane Morris said that if they satisfied the residency conditions of the withdrawal agreement - legally living in Spain on the date the UK leaves the EU - then the understanding is that no work permits would be needed. The situation may be different for those coming to work in the EU after Brexit. With almost as many UK citizens living in San Fulgencio as there are Spanish, the subject of future voting rights was raised. As things stand, UK citizens will not be allowed to vote at the next May 2019 municipal elections unless there is a bilateral agreement between the UK and Spain or comes within any agreed transition period...which hasn’t been agreed as yet.

Indefinite time in the past Basic Spanish for everyday needs

FOR a few weeks we have been looking at a verb tense which, for convenience, we have called the ‘recent past’ tense. In English this is made up of ‘have/has + past participle’ and in Spanish we use the appropriate form of ‘haber + past participle’. An example of the ‘recent past’ use in English would be: ‘I have written the first part of this article’. This is something I ‘have done’ recently, and which is affecting the present in some way, as opposed to something I ‘did’ at a specific time in the past, as in ‘last week I wrote an article’. One of the sentences we used previously as an example of this tense was: ‘¿Has estado en Inglaterra?’ meaning: ‘Have you been to England?’ Now if you think about it, this sentence could refer to two different time frames. We could use it to refer to the recent past. For example if we were speaking to an English neighbour we hadn’t seen for a couple of weeks and wondered where
they had got to recently. On the other hand, imagine you were chatting to a Spanish person and telling them where you came from. If you then asked: ‘Have you been to England?’ you would not be enquiring about whether they had visited England recently, you would be asking if they had ever been to England in their lives. If the answer was just ‘yes’, you would still have no idea whether this visit occurred this year, last year or 20 years ago. The only difference we sometimes make when asking this kind of question is to add the word ‘ever’. This underlines the idea of ‘any time in the past’, without changing the tense used. We might well use this question in our conversations with Spanish people we are getting to know. The way to say ‘ever’ in Spanish is ‘alguna vez’ (any time). So ‘Have you been to England? - ‘¿Has estado en Inglaterra?’ could also be ‘Have you ever been to England?’ - ‘¿Has estado alguna vez en Inglaterra?’. We can now see clearly that the ‘recent past’ tense can also be used to talk about ‘indefinite’ times in the past; experiences in the past in which no reference is made to exactly when they occurred. Here are some more examples in English and Spanish. The words ‘ever’ and ‘alguna vez’ are not obligatory and sometimes sound better in one language than the other.
¿Has visto la película Gone with the Wind? Have you ever seen the film Gone with the Wind? To which we might reply: ‘Sí, la he visto’ or ‘No, no la he visto nunca’ or ‘Sí, la he visto muchas veces’ (I have seen it many times) or ‘No me acuerdo’ (I don’t remember - although that would be unlikely I think!) Incidentally, if you really want to ask this question, it might be useful to know that the Spanish translation is ‘Lo que el viento se llevo’.
Has cantado alguna vez en publico? Have you ever sung in public? ‘Si, he cantado en publico, en un bar Karaoke en Playa Flamenca.’ Just giving you some suggestions here. ¿Has conocido alguna vez a una persona famosa? Have you ever met a famous person? ‘Si, mi padre era actor de Shakespeare.’ Now, I’m getting silly. See you next week!
Many Brits may have cold feet by Michael Cano AFTER changing the law on a number of occasions and promising to do something about it, there now appears to be a wish to give all UK expatriates the right to vote in General Elections. This was a fairly important p l a n k i n D a v i d C a m e r o n ’s s u c cessful election campaign but as soon as he came to power he seemed to forget all about it and certainly used the excuse that it would be too cumbersome to change the law quickly. When he then decided to hold the Referendum, all of those expatriates who had become disenfranchised simply had to let those who were allowed the vote to decide their future for them. Following the departure of David Cameron, there was a snap election which also those who
had been out of the UK for more than 15 years were barred from taking part in. There seems to be quite a strong call for a review of the Brexit decision as many people feel that the negotiations are not going as well as they had hoped and expected. Whilst understandably, many feel that the die is cast and the decision shouldn’t be based on a ‘best of three’ competition, clearly pro-Brexiteers like Boris Johnson are getting a little worried about which way the tide is turning and they are warning the nation that things would be even worse should Brexit not take place. Time will tell but it does seem that a significant number of those who voted to leave or weren’t allowed to have a say in their future are now worried about the eventual outcome.

SO this guy - let’s call him Cecil - walks into his local FonesAreUs branch and tells an assistant that the Samsung he bought just a week before isn’t working properly. “Let’s see,” says the assistant. He then notices a big brown lump stuck to the rear. When Cecil explains that it’s cow dung he goes “ugh!” and pitches it back at the client. The assistant surmises that it had accidentally fallen into a heap of soft and smelly dung in a pasture full of cattle. “Oh no,” says Cecil, “I deliberately smeared it with dung to protect me from radiation.” The assistant decides he’s dealing with a lunatic, sends Cecil packing and dashes to the washroom to scrub his hands. Did this really happen? No. But well it might have, because there is a fellow in India called Shankar Lal who is into something called ‘cowpathy’, a belief that everything that comes out of a cow has magical qualities. In 2016, Lal held out his manure-anointed mobile phone to astonished press photogra-
phers saying: “Cow is our mother. Its excreta and urine are nectar and have the power to save humans from any disease including cancer." He then invited several of his followers to show their dung-smeared mobiles to the press. The Indian Express report about Lal’s campaign to have Indians follow his example, confirmed that cockamamie notions have a special appeal for people who will unquestionably accept any foolish ideas thrown at them by those who claim special knowledge, especially when it’s derived from religious or mystical sources. Which brings me round to another nut-job, a South African doctor named Mike Davidson, who now lives in the UK. Davidson’s mission in life is to make gay people straight via an organisation called the Core Issues Trust (CIT). Despite the fact that all reputable studies over many decades have shown that one’s sexual orientation cannot be changed, Davidson remains committed to his ridiculous cause. A week or so ago he loudly groused that a film just released by CIT, showing that ‘gay-to-straight’ conversion can work through the power of prayer, had been banned by the Vue cinema in London after it realised that it was homophobic garbage, pure and simple. An outraged Davidson said that people had travelled from across the globe to London to see Voices of the Silenced: Experts, Evidences and Ideologies, and that the banning was the result of ‘bullying’ by LGBT activists.
Found guilty MANCHESTER UNITED star Alexis Sanchez has been handed a suspended 16month jail sentence in Spain after pleading guilty to tax fraud. Sanchez, who was accused of defrauding the Spanish government while playing for Barcelona, reached an agreement with the Spanish Attorney General to pay back the tax he failed to pay previously. It shows Graham calling Straight Arrow Counselling and asking whether it could help make him gay. He said he’s frustrated that gay men are getting far more sex than he is. He also wants to become attracted to “large hairy men with beards, as there are way more of them around than super-fit gymnasium gays”. The therapist insists that this cannot be done. “You’re not homosexual. It’s not in your nature, it’s not who you are,” she said.

by Darren Parmenter ALICANTE had a royal visitor last week when Queen Sofia paid a visit to the main food bank in the city. It’s been an interest of Her Majesty for some time, and Doña Sofia has previously met with the heads of the charity to learn more about their work and some of their future plans. The central food bank in Alicante currently distributes a range of staple foods among 33,000 people throughout the province. During the visit, the Queen met and thanked many of the workers at the food bank, especially since the vast majority of them are volunteers. The Reina Sofia Foundation has been working with food banks since 2012, supporting its work by financing a number of projects and sourcing donations of food from a range of private companies.

Apart from the gorgeous weather for most of the year, we like the short flight to Malaga or Gibraltar, compared with the very long flights to some of the world’s other sun spots. We l i k e t h e f a c t t h a t the spectacular and historic cities of Cordoba, Grenada and Sevilla are just a few hours’ drive from our home. We are also just a short hop from Ronda and the Pueblos Blancos. Our kids and grandkids love coming to stay during their summer holidays. The grandkids have made friends with Spanish and Russian children (as well as kids from other UK regions) whom they look forward to seeing each summer. Because we come out to Spain for long periods, my husband and I don’t often eat out in restaurants, so I cook at home a lot using all the
ingredients available here. We are mostly vegetarian though we eat some fish, which is also fresh and abundant here. I love to shop for those glossy local aubergines, shiny green courgettes and all the delicious salad veg. We d o e n joy eating out occasionally, especially at Pellicci’s. It is not only the smartest new restaurant along the coast, but happens to be a one-minute walk from our apartment!

www.thelittlegeranium.com OVER the last few weeks I have been writing recipes for Valentine’s focusing on cooking mostly main dishes, and so this week I want to share one of my all-time favourite chocolate puddings that is remarkably easy to do if you follow this recipe carefully! We have had chocolate fondant on and off the menus at all the Geraniums for a long time. It’s only ever off when we get tired of it and look for changes, but somehow nothing
is ever as good as a fab squidgy, super runny, smooth, rich choc pudding that is guaranteed to make you want to cook it over and over again. I was telling my sous chef Jamie (he makes the fondants) that it is strangely funny, but because I have been cooking for so long most of my dishes have memories like a song might do for you I guess! The first time I ever cooked a fondant was in a restaurant where I was chef/patron and it was my first ever head chef’s position. I took it from the oven, checked it and dressed it and sent it. But inside I was concerned that it might not run enough from the centre, and the whole point of this pud is the gooey, runny centre otherwise you may as well serve a chocolate sponge! When the waitress came into the kitchen I asked her if T5 was ok (the fondant table)
She said I don’t really know…they are moving it around their plates a lot, I’m not sure that they are enjoying it. So with my fingers (and toes) crossed I approached the table and asked “Is everything ok with the chocolate fondant?” This Canadian speaking lady said, “Honey it’s not the chocolate fondant that’s the problem, it’s the last 23 years of marriage!” Every time I turn one out I think of that lady. Much later on I cooked them for Prince Charles at a London charity event. My daughter was serving at the event
and I asked her to check on the desserts. Knowing all my stories (She’s fed up with them!) she came back to the kitchen and said “Dad they said ‘nothing wrong with the fondants it’s the last two weeks of marriage’!” (Prince Charles and Camilla had recently been wed). I laughed out loud and the chefs looked at me in a way that said … It’s not that funny, but they didn’t know the story!
Chocolate Fondant (makes 8)
2 tbsp cocoa powder 200 g unsalted butter 200 g good dark chocolate (minimum 70 per cent cocoa solids) 4 whole eggs 4 egg yolks 200 g caster sugar 200 g self-raising flour
Step 1 PREHEAT THE OVEN Preheat the oven to 190ºC.
Step 2 LINE THE RAMEKINS Get four ramekins or approx 200ml pudding moulds (some of the supermarkets sell the foil ones but use once only). Grease the ramekins with a thin layer of butter. Tip cocoa powder into the ramekins and dust liberally to coat the whole inside with the cocoa powder.
Step 3 MAKE THE BATTER Melt the chocolate and butter in a small bowl set over a pan of hot water. Take off the heat and stir until smooth. Crack the eggs and egg yolks into a mixing bowl. Add the sugar and whisk until pale. Fold the chocolate mix into the eggs. Add the flour and fold to combine fully.
Step 4 FREEZE Pour the chocolate mix into the ramekins, filling about ¾ of the way up. Put the ramekins onto a baking tray and freeze.
Step 5 BAKE Bake in a preheated oven 180c for 12 minutes. Remove and allow to rest on the kitchen side for 2 minutes. Turn out and serve immediately.

LOCAL soul man Michael Harding aka Mr Maph has released a new single on Spotify and most platforms including iTunes and all android stores entitled ‘Bailar.’ The aim of the song is to bring the UK and Spanish residents together by fusing sounds of Urban London with Latino and Caribbean rhythm namely Reggaeton. The track has already being snapped up by hundreds of DJs in the latin and pop markets and is being played internationally. The track features Mike’s son Tmar who is also a Costa del Sol musician and daughter Amaria on some additional vocals. This is clearly a Harding Family project. The family aims to break down all barriers using music and the track can be heard by searching in Spotify or google Mr Maph Bailar.

I, amongst other Spiritualists, call it the Spirit World because it is the holding station for souls departed from an Earthly life. Heaven is a territory for Christians on passing over, so it is not correct to use such a termination as many of my readers and clients are from other faiths; and because I do not wish to cause them any distress. Assure your dear Mother that since she has lived a good life, as a good person she will enter the Heaven that she seeks. I hope that she finds the peace that she deserves on that final journey when the time comes!

Which detox is right? THERE are many types of detox available promoting a variety of health benefits, although most of them contain some standard elements. Whichever detox you choose, the first thing to do is lighten up your toxin load. sport LAST week saw the climax of any club’s bowling season and at the Miraflores Bowls Club the Men’s and Ladies’ Singles took place. The club was blessed with warm sunny days throughout the competition. There was an excellent entry in both competitions and many long and closely contested matches leading up to the finals, together with some unexpected results along the way. In the men’s competition Tom Cordner (winner of last week’s handicap singles) was up against Stuart Thacker and in the ladies’ final Nancy Shaw played Pam Kinane. A large crowd had gathered in expectation to watch what were anticipated to be closely fought matches. The Men’s Final started evenly with both bowlers bowling well and the score 8 - 8 after nine ends, then Tom won a series of ends to lead 16 - 11 after 15 ends. Stuart fought back with a display of excellent draw bowling to win the championship 21 - 16. The match showed many twists and turns before Hull City fan Stuart completed his first honours board win at Miraflores. The Ladies Final saw Nancy get off to a good start, and with Pam not playing at her best she was never able to make her mark on the match, leaving Nancy a com-

Froome leads Vuelta charge CHRIS FROOME was the centre of attention at the Vuelta a Andalucia cycling race, which started on the Mijas coast last Wednesday. The four-time Tour de France winner is carrying Britain’s hopes, despite being mired in controversy over a recent failed drugs test. Stage one from Mijas to Granada took the peloton up from the Mediterranean to the foot of the Sierra Nevada. However, it is stage two which represents the biggest challenge, with an ascent to the Allanadas summit finish, following a constantly challenging climb through the Andalucian mountains. The race is the first test of Froome’s racing season and, although it will not feature five-time winner Alejandro Valverde, as well as Romain Bardet, there is still a stellar cast involved. This includes Froome’s former teammate Mikel Landa, Steven Kruisjwijk and Jakob Fuglsang. The last time Froome entered the race in 2015 he won, and he will be aiming to silence his critics once more.
