Time to ask for the billboard MARBELLA Council is undergoing a project to remove a succession of billboards from public roads. During December and January, 14 adverts that lacked the necessary authorisation have been destroyed. Councillor for Public Roads, Jose Eduardo Diaz, has outlined that a further 15 to 30 panels have been earmarked for confiscation. Up until now the work to dismantle billboards, measuring 8 x 2 metres and 9 x 3 metres, has taken place near the A7 motorway. Areas include Las Chapas, Marbella, and San Pedro Alcantara, as well as the roundabouts in Nueva Andalucia. Diaz said that the initiative “is a priority for the Council because they cause a great visual impact where they are located and their removal will improve the image of the locality.” The process of acquiring permission to install billboards in public spaces is complex, and those that are being taken down have fallen foul of the regulations.

Major upgrade planned for historic building ESTEPONA Council is making a number of improvements to turn the former Casa de las Tejerinas into an exhibition area. One of the major aims of this development is to ensure that those with disabilities will have easy and comfortable access to the 18th century building in the heart of the historic centre of the town. In any upgrade of this sort, it is important to balance the need for conservation with the changes that have to be made in order to meet health and safety requirements as well as special needs.

Whilst ensuring that the upgrade doesn’t affect the general charm of the building, the council has installed a lift which will allow access to the upper floor and its two exhibition rooms. In addition, it has replaced part of the floor of one of the rooms to ensure that it looks similar to the floors in the rest of the

building. It is important that a public exhibition space is not affected adversely by problems with humidity and this has been resolved together with the installation of special lighting as well as general internal redecoration. The last step in this sympathetic restoration will see work

European hotel summit descends on Marbella by Tom Woods MARBELLA is to host a European summit on luxury hotels for the first time. Owners and directors of some of the most exclusive accommodation on the continent will gather in the

city for the 45th staging of the event. According to the President of the Hotel Federation of Andalucia, Manuel Otero, this year’s summit will be focusing on identifying new elite locations. It is the fifth time that Spain has

hosted the meeting and Andalucia’s second, and registration has been high. In fact, while the package offered by the organisers is for two days of stay, many have requested an extension to three and four nights. More than 250 professionals

from the sector will meet from March 16 - 18, staying at the Puente Romano while the summit will be at the Gran Melia Don Pepe. Otero emphasised the importance of the conference to discuss new luxury trends and establish areas for innovation.

TORREMOLINOS Council has awarded scholarships to 10 young artists, enabling them to develop their projects. Among the themes the artists had put forward were equality and the defence of the rights of women and the LGTBI community. The selected projects include a sculptural work aiming to raise awareness about AIDS prevention. Another will delve into personal relationships with a mural about the pursuit of pleasure. The 10 artists will produce their work between February 26 and March 24, and the Councillor for Cultural Promotion, Aida Blanes, commented: “Their works will enrich our cultural heritage and it is very important that they are local residents because they are part of our urban culture.” The creations will be exhibited in public spaces with the vision of bringing art to the streets.

The new contract is the result of the service being put out to tender, the first time this has happened for 40 years. The Council is set to save €1 million a year with the new deal, along with various improvements pledged by Urbaser.

Three gardens, one authority THE Junta de Andalucia regional government has approved the assignment of the Three Gardens park to Marbella Council’s full control. The Council has been given the responsibility of managing the site for the next 50 years, which it requested back in 2015. Up until now the two authorities had comanaged the park, with the Junta in charge of cleaning, removal of waste and maintenance of buildings and facilities. At the moment the park is in a state of disrepair, and several of its buildings have been vandalised. There has been public demand for action given that the Three Gardens is the first ecopark in Andalucia and the largest forest park in the forest. Located next to the Guadaiza river, the park features a Mediterranean garden, an Arab garden and a plot for ornamental vegetation. There are 22,500 plants, including 950 palm trees and 560 tropical species. Maintenance costs are around €500 million a year.

“ We w a n t t h e c l u b t o have its own facilities for the storage of the kayaks, and so that it can continue increasing the number of members and spreading aw a re n e s s o f t h e s p o r t ,” said Cardeña. The K ayak Fishing Club (which has 40 members) will set up its headquarte r s o n t h e p o r t a n d w i l l be fully equipped. Sponsorship opportunities will also be sought for the various competitions in which it will take par t,

so that ‘Marbella is heard in the kayak world.’ President of the club, Francisco Morilla, thanked the support of the council and encouraged the public to make a visit to the new location. “ These facilities will allow us to publicise the spor t of kayaking and f i s h i n g i n t h i s a r e a ,” h e said, adding that the move to the port “facilitates the c e l e b ra t i o n o f a c t i v i t i e s for children and other events.”

French sports clothes fraudsters closed down THE National Police have arrested a French couple in Marbella who are accused of fraudulently obtaining more than €700,000 in an internet scam. T h e y s e t u p a w e b s i t e o ff e r i n g a range of sports equipment, but mainly trainers, aimed at a French market and according to officers it is believed that they accepted orders from more than 12,000 people but didn’t supply any goods. When the police raided their property, they found €207,000 in cash and seized two luxury vehicles a moped, four laptops, two tablets, five mobile

phones and a hard drive. In addition €223,000 in a bank account was frozen. The investigation was initiated after a bank reported how numerous transactions, undertaken through a virtual point of sale terminal registered to them, were being claimed as being fraudulent. Money which was received for clients was transferred swiftly to another account in a bank in Marbella, but due to the speed of action by the investigating officer they were able to arrest the couple before they fled to Morocco with the cash.

OFFICERS from the National Police have smashed a ring that allegedly operated a fake branch of the Vatican bank and swindled people around the world. They arrested three Spaniards and a Colombian suspected of running the criminal network in Fuengirola, near the sea resort of Marbella, police said in a statement. The group “usurped the identity, symbols and image” of the bank, which does not have an office outside Vatican City. It obtained “huge profits” from contracts signed with “a lot of companies around the world” to develop “commercial relations and provide financial advice,” said the statement. “As well as a lot of paperwork, officers seized a sailboat in the Fuengirola marina, several luxur y cars, €64,000 in the main sus-

It will be located in the Arroyo de las Canas area, and will boast a cultural centre alongside. A charitable foundation is still raising funds for the building, which will be a scaled down version of an earlier planned project in San Pedro. The foundation said that building plans are “urgently being finished” to meet a strict timetable imposed by the Council, which owns the land. For many years the Orthodox Church community has been renting different venues to hold its services, but has long had a vision of its own space that looks set to be realised. The church and cultural centre would also hope to arrange special events to promote Russian culture and language classes. Estepona Council has granted rights to use the land for 75 years free of charge, and the budget for construction (paid for by donations) is over €1.1 million.

Auditorium to take centre stage MARBELLA Council wants to open out the Nagueles quarry to other uses beyond music concerts. It is currently working on the drafting of regulations designed to liberalise the conditions of use for the site’s auditorium. The vision is to allow access for more cultural events on the site which ‘serve as focal points of public interest ,’ as well as ‘guaranteeing free access to new initiatives by public or private organisations that enhance Marbella’s tourism appeal.’ The Council wants to free up use of the quarry as soon as possible, while removing unnecessary red tape around the venue. Events that have any suggestion of ani-

All applications for 2018 must be submitted during the first three months of the year. Once the documentation has been received, it will be assessed in relation to te c h n i c a l fe a s i b i l i t y, a n d c u l t u ra l a n d tourism interest, among other criteria. Contributions to the drafting of the new regulations can be sent via email to con sultpublica@marbella.es. There may be objections however from other parties, as the area is considered to be part of a protected area where permanent structures are not allowed.

Soldier in sexual abuse storm gets psychological help by Tom Woods THE female soldier who recently reported two charges of sexual assault against her has asked the army for psychological help. This has been confirmed by the Ministry of Defence and comes in the wake of the media uproar that has followed the revelations. The incidents allegedly happened in the barracks of Bobadilla, with one reportedly involving a group of soldiers after the woman was drugged with narcotics.

She is currently maintaining a direct and regular contact with her commander, who encouraged her to tell him what happened at the police station. Her lawyer has explained that the morning after the alleged group assault, the soldier was surprised to find semen stains in her stockings along with an unusual headache that ‘had nothing to do with a hangover.’ The commander immediately activated the protocol of action against sexual harassment, and the

w o m a n w a s o ff e r e d medical, legal and psychological assistance, which she initially declined. H o w e v e r, s h e h a s now accepted and been provided with psychological help, and having rejected the offer of a change in air base, she will be taking a holiday on full salary. The perpetrators of the attacks have not yet been identified although the investigation is ongoing. DNA samples have now been taken from nine of the soldiers in the Bobadilla barracks.

So the ADANA team were happy to accept an invitation to take part in a mushing event, organised by a group of local ‘canicross’ enthusiasts

and the Manilva Council who provided the venue. President Mary and Treasurer Reg accompanied a team of volunteers with 10 ADANA dogs, some of whom took part in the walk. Mushing, a sport involving dogs running with their owners on foot, sledges or bikes, is fast becoming a

very popular activity. After the event a reception and prize-giving was held in Manilva, and ADANA had a table with information leaflets advertising their work. The ADANA team would like to thank all who organised the event.

HEALTHY ACCOUNTS: Fuengirola Council has money to spend. FUENGIROLA Council has signed off the municipal budgets for 2018 and accounts show that it has more than €3 million of revenue extra to spend. The total income for the Council was €87.5 million and Mayor Ana Mula described the financial situation as “very stable.” “These are good budgets for this city, which cater to the needs of the people. I have to also say that we are

going to try to fulfil the proposals that the residents themselves presented in the consultation process.” About €1.5 million has been allocated to street refurbishments, €300,000 each for park and beach improvements, and €185,000 for a new cultural installation. The budgets were approved solely through the votes of the Popular Party.

BRANCHING OUT: Fuengirola did not escape the wrath of the storm with branches down.

Over 250 incidents due to gales in Malaga Province STRONG winds in the recent storm led to over 250 separate incidents, said the emergency services. The state meteorology agency (AEMET) measured a wind speed of 94 km/h and raised the severe weather warning from yellow to amber, for gales and rough seas. In one of the most serious cases, a 67-year-old foreign woman was blown off her bicycle into a lamppost

on the seafront near the Sacaba Beach roundabout. The woman was rushed to Carlos Haya hospital in an ambulance with serious head injuries. However, the majority of the i n c i d e n t s i n M a l a g a P ro v i n ce were fallen branches and lampposts causing damage to buildings and cars. Part of the wall around the play-

ground of the Garcia Lorca primary school was blown down, falling onto a car on the next street. A man was injured in Fuengirola after being hit on the head by the lid of a water tank which was blown loose by the wind. The fire services responded to a number of incidents in the town, including the collapse of a wall onto a van in Los Boliches.

Caravan criminal detained in jail THE man who was arrested in Benalmadena for allegedly providing drugs to underage girls and having sex with some of them, has been ordered to prison by a judge on bail of â‚Ź10,000. However, according to sources from the Superior Court of Justice of Andalucia, the initial investigation will only focus on an alleged crime against public health, and not for corruption of minors as proposed by the National Police. Shortly after this became apparent, police sources announced that a relative of the detainee has also reported that he sexually abused her when she was a minor. The man allegedly gained the trust of at least 15 children with gifts (clothing or mobile phones), before offering drugs and making advances to them in his caravan. An investigation began after the disappearance of a 14-yearold teenager and her subsequent discovery in the caravan in a field in Benalmadena. Also found in the caravan were marihuana buds, two shotguns, a camera, a tablet, and several handwritten letters.

The Councilâ€™s casa is your casa ESTEPONA Council plans to restructure the interior of the Casa de las Tejerinas, to make it more accommodating for visitors. The elegant building, located in the historic Plaza de las Flores, will be fitted with a lift to allow easier public access to the first floor, where there are two exhibition halls.

Along with temporary exhibitions, the former 18th-century palace is expected to also be used for presentations, talks, and other cultural activities once the work is completed. The building was donated by the last owner, Francisca Tejerina, to the Hospital de la Caridad before the Council eventually took over.

New flight routes taking off QATAR AIRWAYS has announced plans to introduce a direct route from Malaga this year. In a presentation at the International Tourism Fair in Madrid, Country Manager Marimar Laveda said that the company was encouraged to act by the growth of the Spanish market.

In fact it will be launching 19 new routes, one of which will be Malaga to Doha, in May of this year, though it is not yet possible to book flights. Among the other new connections offered by Qatar Airways are Canberra, San Francisco, Pattaya, Ghana, and Lisbon.

This is a mixture of chopped marihuana and hashish pollen which contains a large amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is what gets users high. house on an industrial estate in the town. Officers suspected that this was the base for the preparation of the dr ug , and when the y raided the warehouse they discovered 1,200 plastic-coated packages inside two tanks, mixed with sand due to be shipped to Denmark. Within each package were five smaller packs which bore a picture of a marihuana bud and the word Kritikal. Two Danes aged 35 and 43 were arrested and are now â€˜helping police with their enquiriesâ€™.

A PRIVATE prosecution in the Spanish courts has seen a British man jailed for at least 18 years for murder and associated offences. The actual incident took place in 2015 when the accused said to be a former soldier from Gibraltar - ran over a young Spaniard from La Linea de la Concepcion who was killed and two others who were injured. At the end of a two week trial, the jury found the man guilty of all charges and he was sentenced to 11 years and two months for the death, and the balance for the running over of the other victims.

The driver of this car lived to walk away WHILST many people are expert at parking in tight spaces, one person managed to wedge their car into the smallest space imaginable and then walked away. According to a witness who saw the event, and has spoken exclusively to RTN, a British registered car shot out of the entrance to Urb Monte Biarritz at the bottom of the Benahavis road, hitting a bollard and then, unable to straighten the car, mounted a barrier on the side of the road. The driver, believed to be a British woman, emerged from the car unhurt although somewhat shaken, and when approached with an offer of assistance simply asked for some water which the witness obtained from a nearby garage. The lady in question was seen to make a phone call and was picked up, leaving the car where it was last Saturday and it has remained in the same position ever since.

It is part of an anti-drugs operation that is taking place in several parts of Spain, and two officers of the Special Operations Group have been shot. A second drug lord in Algeciras, Enrique Arango, has also been arrested, whilst his daughter was apprehended in Cadiz. The entrance to the marina is silted up, blocking access for larger boats.

Torremolinos TV in the spotlight THE Court of Instruction of Torremolinos has opened proceedings for alleged irregularities detected in the awarding of Torremolinos TV’s management contract. In 2015 the Council put out a tender to determine its management going forward. However, several potential candidates denounced the process, claiming that it violated the conditions of the tender. Several months later the Provincial Prosecutor of Malaga investigated the evidence and decided that it could ‘constitute a crime against the public administration,’ and duly referred it to the courts. The management of Torremolinos Television was awarded to a company from Malaga, despite the fact that one of the requirements was to assign it to a professional individual. This individual was to be a professional in the media or having accredited knowledge of management and journalism. The selection process was also apparently extended for 11 days past the deadline, during which time the winning proposal was made. In addition, the winning company appointed a director who did not appear in its proposal, and was only working as a subcontractor. Councillor Maria Carmen Garcia Bernal, who chairs the board of the winning group, commented that the company had acted with discretion and is collaborating with the investigation.

Age Care Association holds informative talk AS part of the coffee morning in Calahonda which is held at the International Baptist Church every Tuesday between 11am - 1pm, clients and visitors were given an informative talk by Myra Azzopardi the founder of Citizens Advice here in Spain. It was extremely interesting and she covered many relevant topics. She talked about many interesting and important issues relevant to the expatriate community. The importance of being on the Padron, and the need to renew your registration every two or five years, depending on whether you are here permanently or on a temporary basis. Some people have an entitlement to support eg telephone assistance, attendance allowance, a cleaner etc, but you are only entitled to such allowances if you have been registered on the Padron for five years and based on your income. She talked about healthcare rights that one can apply for and especially personal alarm systems, either worn on the wrist or as a necklace, to notify a named person or organisation if you need assistance. One needs to go to the Social Services department to apply.

charge, it also depends on donations and because we depend sometimes on them for our clients, Age Care is donating €1,000 to their funds. Myra was extremely grateful for the generosity of Age Care. Age Care is a non-profit organisation entirely run by volunteers to help the elderly English-speaking community, regardless of nationality. The shop where the most funds are raised is in El Zoco, Calahonda.

IN the winters of the 1950’s the working classes had only one choice to keep a room in their house warm, it was a coal fire. Do you remember the coal merchant delivering these heavy bags of fuel? He would sling a bag onto each shoulder and deliver it to your coal house like they were bags of feathers and I could never understand how - as a nine-year-old young lad such a slightly built man could carry so much weight. Also why did we have a posh front room full of nice furniture that was only used when family or friends came round? That front room was always cold and full of interesting ornaments, and when the best tea set came out the tea was poured into the cups from a very colourful tea pot. The door to this room was always shut. My younger Brother and I were never allowed in, but in the late 1960’s everything changed, as the dividing walls were taken out to make one big living space. Let’s go back to the late 50’s. My late Father was in the Royal Marine Commandoes (a sergeant) in the Second World War. He was a very hard man, 6ft 2in and very strong!

REMINISCING: The good old days.

He got a job at the Standard Engine Factory after the war, but was always looking for ways of making money on the side. Our house was a stone’s throw from a common which used to have the travelling showmen (fairs, commonly called Mop Fair) four times a year. Some of the sideshows were the tat-

tooed lady, the fat lady, the man with three legs, the dwarf with three eyes etc. I will now explain why I called this factual true story A sack of coal. After work my old man used to put a sack of coal on his back and run up and down our long garden for at least 30 minutes each night, so he was as fit as a fiddle!

There was another sideshow at these fairs, it was a large tent with a boxing ring inside. The entrance was highly decorated, with the fighters standing on a platform with a tanner (sixpence) entrance fee. A few of the fighters were skinny chaps stripped down to their shorts who used to shadow-box, but a couple of them were dressed in their full gowns, shoulders down, without smiling. They were the true fighters and the others were just there to give you a false sense of security. If you signed up for a scrap admission was free and the purse was five bob (shillings). My Dad took me into the tent, sat me down, took his shirt and vest off and went into the ring. He fought like a warrior, not observing the Queensbury rules, but he wanted that five bob and he never lost! Afterwards he held my hand and took me to the chip shop where he bought me a tanner’s worth of chips and scratchings, then sent me to the local coal merchants to collect a sack of coal. The coal merchant was about half a mile away and he used to put the sack in my bike frame. I then tramped through the snow, wheeled it back and my Dad lit a fire. Warmth at last I thought, but no, I wanted a leak and we had an outside toilet!

Flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia receives honour

PACO DE LUCIA: Will appear on Norwegian aircraft tail planes.

by John Smith NORWEGIAN, the low cost airline, will dedicate two of their aircraft to one of the greatest flamenco guitarists of all time, the late Paco de Lucia. His image will appear on the tail plane of two aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner used on long haul routes and a Boeing 737-8 for short and medium length routes. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is being assembled right now at the Boeing factory in Seattle and will

be delivered to the company in mid-February, at which time the image of the guitarist will be painted onto the aircraft in the Norwegian workshops in Oslo, as will a different image of de Lucia on the 737-8. There are now 10 famous individuals connected with Spanish history appearing on Norwegian tail planes including Christopher Columbus, Cervantes and Joan Miro, but Paco de Lucia is the first Spanish musician to be honoured in this way.

He now joins a number of other greats from music including Edvard Greig, Freddie Mercury and Argentine tango artist Astor Piazzolla. One of the images used in the decoration of the aircraft has been obtained thanks to the collaboration of the artist’s family in his home town Algeciras, and is based on a photograph of the guitarist, taken in 2013 in Mallorca for the album ‘Cancion Andaluza’, his posthumous work. Speaking about this decision,

Gabriel Canseco, widow of Paco de Lucia, commented “Paco said that ever ything he needed was in a suitcase, the suitcase with which he travelled tirelessly to almost ever y point of the globe to transmit his music, with the responsibility of claiming an art that went from local to universal. “It will be exciting to see the image of Paco sailing the skies every day. Thank you, Norwegian, for this recognition to Paco, to the guitar and, above all, to flamenco.“

A sprinkle of change WATER supplier Acosol and the Andalucian Golf Federation have met with representatives from 40 local golf clubs to discuss ways to keep their courses green. With risk of drought restrictions continuing, this was the latest in a series of meetings on the matter. Continued cooperation is important to ensure that the best use is made of increasingly scarce water supplies. Almost 90 per cent of Costa clubs already use treated wastewater from sewage plants to irrigate their courses, a point the club managers wanted to be publicised more. Investment in new irrigation technology is also on the agenda.

A VIDEO has emerged of former American Vice President Joe Biden disclosing that the US had to browbeat Europe’s leaders into imposing economic sanctions on Moscow in 2014. Following the referendum that returned Crimea to Russia, America’s economic war badly hit the pockets of 510 million EU citizens. Biden rants, “We spent so much time on the phone making sure that everyone from Hollande (France) to Renzi (Italy) wouldn’t walk away. They wanted no part of the sanctions on Russia. We had impact on them. It was basically ‘you have got to do it’.” Biden adds; “And thank God, Merkel was strong enough at the time to do so, reluctantly to stand with us.”

Biden was addressing The Council on Foreign Relations, a United States think tank that focuses on US foreign policy and international affairs. The American economic war not only drove a rift between Russia and EU, but also prompted Moscow to retaliate with restrictions on imports from EU nations heavily dependent on trade with Russia. According to the Austrian Institute of Economic Research the US inspired standoff has cost EU industry, agriculture and tourism over €30 billion and led to the loss of roughly 500,000 jobs. Based on a war economy and $20 trillion in debt, a commentator sums up the United States. ‘If the world was a bar, America would be the angry drunk waving around a loaded gun. Yeah, the other people in the bar might be afraid of him, but they sure as hell don’t respect him.” The US today is drifting from omnipotence to impotence. The big question is what happens to the European Union when America disintegrates. The Gold-

Liberated from Washington and Wall Street control, the peoples of Europe may find it necessary to elect a more pragmatic political leadership if they wish to resume trading with the now lucrative Russian marketplace. One thing for certain, when the mop flops there is much to keep former European Union members occupied but thankfully it won’t be an American occupation.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE are still gradually piecing together the ‘recent past’ tense in Spanish, and I finished off the last article with some rather repetitive examples. I am going to start this article with similar, but somewhat less repetitive, examples. He escrito la carta. (I have written the letter). Has estado en Inglaterra. (You have been to England). Ha visto la película. (S/he has seen the film). Hemos comprado un coche. (We have bought a car). Habéis leído el artículo. (You (plu) have read the article). Han hecho sus deberes. (They have done their homework).

front (no he escrito la carta. I haven’t written the letter), and we can form a simple closed or ‘yes/no’ question by inserting question marks and changing the tone of our voice when speaking (¿Has estado en Inglaterra? Have you been to England?). Also, we can extend our ‘he’, ‘she’ or ‘they’ sentences by naming the subject (Mi amiga ha visto la película. My friend has seen the film. Los niños han hecho sus deberes. The children have done their homework).

Mi amiga ya ha visto la película. Mi amiga ha visto la película ya. (My friend has already seen the film). Mi amiga no ha visto la película todavía. (My friend hasn’t seen the film yet). Mi amiga todavía no ha visto la película. (My friend still hasn’t seen the film).

Still, yet and already are tricky concepts to get our head round in English, so you should have fun thinking about these in Spanish! A variant of ‘todavía’ is ‘aún’, so we could also say: Aún mi amiga aún no ha visto la película. Next week we are going to move on to looking at another use of this ‘recent past’ tense. I’ll leave you to guess what it is. See you then.

Whilst we are still talking about the recent past, we should mention a couple of words that are often used in this context. One is ‘todavía’ meaning ‘yet’ or ‘still’ and the other is ‘ya’ meaning ‘already’. Here are the same sentences inserting these words to illustrate how they are used.

These sentences clearly show the changes to the verb ‘haber’ which control the subject of each sentence, that is, whether it is ‘I’, ‘you’, ‘he’ ‘she’ etc who are controlling the action of the verb. Don’t forget that the same rules apply as before when we want to make the following simple changes to these sentences. We can make them negative by putting ‘no’ at the

Sad news: ‘Nigel No Mates’ is dead

AROUND 18 years ago an item of news caught my attention. In a bid to attract gannets to the island of Mana, off the coast of New Zealand, a group of conservationists created a colony of concrete gannets, painted them in appropriate colours and waited for an invasion of real gannets. The experiment was a failure in all but one aspect. A lone gannet, more easily fooled than its kinfolk, came to Mana, promptly fell in love with one of the decoys and remained with ‘her’ for years Reporting this week on Nigel’s death, the New York Times quoted Linda Kerkmeester, Vice President of the environmental conservation group Friends of Mana as saying: “He nested alongside her. He was seen wooing her by preening her. Nigel was also seen trying to mate with her.” Chris Bell, 37, a ranger for the New Zealand Conservation Department, found the seabird dead in his nest. It was Bell who named the bird ‘Nigel No Mates’ because he had no friends. He thought the saddest part of this story was that Nigel’s courtship of the stone bird gave him absolutely nothing in return for his

persistent devotion. Now I have to confess that I once fell in love with a bird when I was aged eight, and the only reward I got was a nightmare trip to the A&E department of a local hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was traumatic in the extreme because the African Grey parrot had sunk his beak into the soft tissue between my right thumb and forefinger, and a surgeon had to separate the creature from my flesh with considerable difficulty. An old idea solves a tricky problem SAN ROQUE Council is celebrating the fact that it has obtained a new tool to allow its workers to easily prune palms and other trees. The idea is that it will allow workers to reach the top of trees which were previously out of reach of traditional vehicles known as ‘cherr y pickers’ which have a basket on an extending arm. The new tool is based on the concept used by workers in the tropics who used to shin up trees to collect coconuts but is made of metal and is much safer. The worker can ascend the trunk of the tree in easy and safe stages, allowing him to reach the uppermost levels which need to be tended at least once a year.

Now other kids would have given a vicious creature like Brutus a wide berth after such a run-in, but I was determined to win him over to my side. But nothing I did would convince him that all I craved

One night the family hosted a dinner party, and one of the guests strolled over to Brutus’s cage in the hope of having a civilised conversation with him. When the bird spoke, the guest backed away from the cage in horror, rounded on my Grandfather and demanded to know who had taught it such ‘filth’. It turned out that Brutus was not only bad-tempered, it had a vocabulary that would make a fishwife blush, and my mortified Granddad announced that the bird had to go. It was taken off his hands by a friend who clearly had no problem with foul-mouthed pets. But birds still figured large in my young life. Granddad decided that canaries were a far safer bet, and went on to breed some prize-winning specimens. Brutus, I learned many years later, died in his 90’s, well after his new owner fell off the perch. If the bird’s last words were ‘merde’ I shouldn’t be in the least surprised.

A courageous woman who has conquered her illness by Michael Cano JAN SHURE is a former journalist who spent 29 years in various senior editorial roles at the London-based Jewish Chronicle and wrote a best-selling, beauty and fashion book back in the mid-80’s. She left journalism to concentrate full-time at www.sosensational.co.uk, the fashion website she co-founded with her long-time friend and now business partner, Cyndy Lessing. SoSensational is what’s known in e-commerce as an aggregator. They bring together fashion from all d i ff e r e n t b r a n d s , a t a l l different price points, all

carefully chosen for the fashionable over-50 woman. Unlike other aggregators, they also offer style advice which is specifically written for fashionable women of 50-plus. Jan told RTN newspaper in a recent interview “I am married to Colin L e w i s . We m a r r i e d i n 2003. It was a second marriage for both of us. We have six adult children and 11 grandchildren between us. “Colin and I spend a little over half the year in the UK and the rest of the time in Spain. “In the UK, home is in north London. In Spain, home is Guadalmansa, which is located between

San Pedro and Estepona.” In 2014, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The surgery for its removal left her severely impaired and initially she lost all motor function and had many other health issues. Recovery has been very slow and still continues, and one of the most effective treatments for Jan was Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. The couple had heard about this therapy for those with brain damage, but it is only available in a few places not in the UK where it is used only for diving accidents. Swimming and walking are both very important as they are part of my rehabilitation,” she said. The business came about almost accidentally. Jan was approaching retirement age when, in her words, “Cyndy and I planned to start ‘a little business’ to help women of 50-plus find fabulous clothes. “It turns out we hit the zeitgeist and created a really successful business and a website which women of 50-plus really love, and flock to, especially now as they are becoming more accustomed to buying fashion online.

Jan Shure is a fascinating lady who simply refused to give up after her illness, which has left her with some problems with her speech but her mind is clearly recovered and is both sharp and concise.

It’s nice to go out and enjoy Valentine’s evening but then again it’s nice to stay in, as long as you can cook something with relative ease and with confidence. Last week I cooked a fish and pasta dish, easy to prepare and delicious to have as a starter, this week I’m cooking the main course. Most of us love a piece of great beef

Ingredients Serves two • 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary leaves (or dried) • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves (or dried) • 2 cloves garlic • 1 shallot or small onion peeled • Zest of 1 orange • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • 1 tablespoon Maldon salt • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 beef fillet trimmed, weighing approximately 600g

Method Preparation: 20 minutes • In a food processor, combine the rosemary, thyme, garlic, shallot, orange zest, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Add the olive oil and process until smooth. • Spread the mustard thinly over the entire piece of beef • Spread the food processor mixture evenly over all sides of the fillet

and I’m no exception, I could happily eat many things but I would probably opt for a piece of good beef. So what is a good piece of beef? In Andalucia they use a lot of young beef from southern parts, sometimes its ok but often it isn’t. For the best, ask for beef that comes from the north of Spain. In and around the Asturiana area the beef is carefully reared and is of a specific breed and quality. If your butcher doesn’t have anything like this opt for Irish, Scottish or Argentinian which you can find over here quite easily. There is no point in spending good money on an average piece of beef so push the boat out a little more and you will really see the difference. The best cut for tenderness is the fillet (Solomillo) although other cuts like rib have more flavour because it has more fat, but sometimes it can be too fatty, so

let’s not take the chance, let’s go for the fillet. Simplicity is refreshing and usually the best way, especially with a good ingredient, so I am taking the beef and rubbing spices and herbs into it, I’m leaving it in the fridge for at least five hours to allow the flavours to penetrate, and then I will seal the beef and roast it gently. It doesn’t get much simpler, but the result is a superb piece of beef cooked medium rare (the best way) then simply slice to serve. Cooking can be sexy and your partner will feel pleased and excited as you carve the beef and seem totally in control! Because Saint Valentine was Italian I am serving the beef with a sauce enriched with Chianti and with some polenta (corn meal) rather than potato. (You can get instant versions of polenta in the supermarkets which is far easier as far

less time and stirring). Note: I love to make the polent a, let it set in a tray and then cut it into neat rectangles and crispy fry in olive oil with a clove of garlic in the oil. As Valentine’s is such a busy time for us I am running our Italian themed menu all that week, from Tuesday to next Saturday, so if you want to take the easy option and have me cook for you, there is plenty of opportunity that week!

Valentine’s Spiced Beef Fillet and then put the beef in a large glass baking dish. Cover with tin foil, and refrigerate for at least five hours. • Preheat your oven to 200 C / Gas mark 6. • Place the fillet in a large pan and seal it all over gently, ensuring the spices do not burn. • Now put it into a roasting tin ideally on a rack • Roast the beef in the oven until the meat thermometer registers 55C when inserted into centre of beef, about 35 minutes. This will be rare to medium rare but, once rested, more on the medium rare side. Cook to 65C for medium to well. • Remove from the oven and let it stand (rest) for 10 minutes. Slice the beef, and serve with the sauce.

For the Chianti Sauce Making a Jus When we make a jus we use calves feet (for natural gela-

tine) or sometimes agar agar to help thicken. At home this process is made easier with the help of the beef granules if you can’t get either. About 2 kg veal or beef bones, chopped (get your butcher to do this) About 1 kg of meat trimmings (ask your butcher) Approx 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion chopped 1 carrot chopped ½ leek chopped 1 stick celery chopped 2 bay leaves 1 big sprig fresh thyme

Small bunch parsley 2 litres of cold water 1 teaspoon peppercorns ½ bottle of cooking red wine 1 tablespoon of honey 1 tablespoon of beef granules ½ bottle of Chianti wine to finish

Method • Roast the bones until golden brown in a pre-heated oven 250C and then remove and cover with the honey and deglaze the pan with the red wine • Put the meat trimmings into a very large saucepan on a high heat and fry them in the olive oil until well-browned • Add the bones from step 1 and add everything else also

• Cover with the cold water. Bring slowly to the boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for at least one hour or until the liquid reduces by about half. (1 litre approx.) • Strain through a sieve into a smaller clean saucepan • Now add the ½ bottle of Chianti red wine and the gravy beef granules and reduce vigorously by half • Pass through a very fine sieve to finish ( if need be add a touch more of the Chianti wine) • The stock can be made ahead and chilled or frozen for up to one month.

A leading British obesity expert has said it may be the ‘missing link’ in the search for an effective weight loss technique. Dutch researchers carried out a series of studies to see if mindfulness stops people from eating excessively. They analysed data on more than 400 people who had undergone regular weigh-ins over two and a half years. It found people who are ‘naturally mindful’ were better able to recognise when they are hungry, meaning their weight fluctuates less than people who are less aware. Mindfulness is a psychological process which involves blocking out distractions, focusing on the present moment and listening to your body.

motoring by Tim Saunders THERE is one vehicle that allows its driver to feel infallible. The fifth generation Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian compact pick-up truck. A series of frustrating challenges occur during my time with this offroader. It is delivered during our move from a Victorian mid-terrace on a busy main road, to a detached residence in a quiet close… the stuff of dreams. Back in reality it’s completion day and the fridge needs shifting, so do the mattresses. The big Barbarian is parked outside our front door at some ungodly hour, to allow my wife Caroline and I to hoist the fridge into the back. It quickly becomes apparent that the Mitsubishi is not as userfriendly as the Nissan Navara, which I had been driving previously. The latter had various gizmos that could be adjusted, depending on the load carried, for straps or ropes to be tied through, making it a real joy to work with. Not so on the L200. We get there though and successfully move the fridge. One of our new neighbours helps me unload it. On my return to the old house the weather becomes a bit questionable but this doesn’t matter, because while a truck is usually open at the back, this particular L200 has a nifty heavy-duty plastic retracting and lockable tonneau cover, providing complete protection from the elements. A definite oneup on the Nissan Navara I tested that did not have such a fitting. However, it’s not the easiest of systems to operate, sometimes jamming, with the actual fitting moving and requiring pushing back into place. The mattresses fit and eventually we are able to get the cover to stay in place and lock. Later in the test it seems much easier to operate, so perhaps this early experience is user error, which is possible… On moving in we discover that the recycle bin has not been collected. I toy with complaining to the council but think better of it, instead deciding to shove the recycle bin in the back of the Barbarian and take it to the tip to do the job myself. You can’t do that in a Ford Fiesta. And then there are the mini roundabouts that deserve to be driven over for being so irritating and the rows of cars that insist on parking down busy main roads. The Barbarian easily deals with these issues. “It’s a big truck for a big ego,” says a friend. Perhaps such motorists are drawn to the L200 but for me it’s a practical choice in a tough world. I recall how one of my early employers, not long after I graduated nearly 20 years ago now, owned an L200, which he swore by, not at, for towing his powerboat. As far as I can see the Mitsubishi has changed very little apart from its looks, becoming even more attractive. It has forged a reputation as one of the 4x4’s that all others aspire to become. Not long after uploading my video review to my video channel (which you can find at www.tes tdrives.biz) I was contacted by an American viewer, desperate to get hold of this particular model. Mitsubishi informed me that it is not available for sale in the USA but could be exported there. As with all vehicles of this type the raised ride height provides a great command of the road ahead; it is noticeably taller than many other SUV’s and 4x4’s. The suspension is hard which really highlights the increasingly poor state of Britain’s roads. A long journey

would certainly shake them bones. In fact it makes driving on the road feel similar to off-roading in some places. With its black leather interior the driver’s seat is electrically adjustable. Unlike Nissan’s Navara the Mitsubishi’s six-speed manual gearbox is decisive. Its cruise control is easy to operate. There’s a helpful reversing camera making parking this brute easy peasy. Fuel economy stands at well under 30mpg during typical driving. The double cab allows for five occupants to be transported. In addition Mitsubishi has added some bling to this particular model. Aside from the good amount of chrome that can be found on the grille and steps, open the rear doors and a nightclub neon blue light greets passengers; popular with daughters Harriett and Heidi. “But what does Barbarian mean?” questions Heidi. “Well,” I said, buying myself some time as I start the engine. “It’s a pre-historic man, you know a hunter gatherer.” “Like you Daddy?” “Yes, like me.”

motoring THE new Qualcomm Safety Car BMW i8 Coupe has celebrated its debut in the Chilean capital Santiago. MS&AD Andretti Team drivers Antonio Felix da Costa (POR) and Tom Blomqvist (GB) both attended the presentation, along with Team Principals Roger Griffiths, JF Thormann and Bruno Correira. Also there was Alejandro Agag, CEO of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, who said: “When we first started Formula E, many people said that this series would not have a future. BMW was amongst the first to open its doors and believe in our championship. Ever since the very first race in 2014, the Qualcomm Safety Car has sat proudly at the front of the grid.” The Qualcomm Safety Car makes use of a ‘Halo Prototype Technology’ inductive charging system. The system uses no cable connections and becomes 80 per cent charged in only one hour. Other new features include a roll bar, rear wing, a rear hatch made of carbon fibre and a roof-mounted signal light system. JAGUAR recently introduced its new E-PACE model at a presentation in Marbella hosted by distributor C de Salamanca. The E-PACE is a compact five-seater SUV with the design and performance of a sports car. This four-wheel drive model joins Jaguar’s SUV stable which includes the SUV F-PACE, recently awarded the World Car of the Year. The sporty exterior design is inspired by the F-TYPE and is characterised by the distinctive Jaguar grille and trimmed overhangs. According to Jaguar: “The E-PACE combines the interior space, connectivity and safety that families expect, with a quality of design and performance that is not usually associated with such a practical vehicle.” It is a technically advanced and intelligent model with a touch-screen entertainment system that connects customers with their favourite apps. There are four 12-volt charging points, five USB ports and a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight devices. The Configurable Dynamics system allows drivers to make individual adjustments to the accelerator, automatic transmission, steering and suspension. In addition, the 300 HP turbo engine allows the car to reach 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds, with a maximum speed of 243 km/h. Overall, the Jaguar E-PACE combines all the character of a sports car with the space needed by young families.

CHRIS FROOME has confirmed his decision to race at the Ruta del Sol in Spain, despite being under investigation for the use of his asthma medication. He said he is “confidant” of clearing up his Adverse Analytical Finding for salbutamol at last year ’s Vuelta a España, which is still being investigated. Froome had twice the permitted amount of salbutamol in his urine and there have been growing calls for Team Sky to pull him out of competition during the investigation. Many of Froome’s rivals have expressed a wish for him to even stand down voluntarily, but he believes that would be an admission of guilt. In a statement he said: “I hope that people will appreciate that there are limits to what I can say whilst the process is still ongoing, but no one is keener than me to move things forward as quickly as possible.” Froome will compete in the fiveday race, starting on Wednesday, two years after taking the overall victory and a stage win.

Pleas to reverse privatisation of sport OPPOSITION members from the Partido Popular (PP) on Mijas Council have indicated that they are very worried about proposed privatisation of municipal sporting matters. They believe that the actions of the ruling coalition could be damaging to the morale and job stability of those who work in the section. They fear that the quality of what is offered to residents, including regular workshops covering different sporting disciplines, could be disrupted in an effort to simply save money. The PP councillors have therefore appealed to the PSOE/Ciudadanos ruling coalition to listen to the proposals of workers, unions and residents and to reverse their decision.

THE bowls Handicap Singles took place last week in mild weather conditions, contrary to the forecast rain. It is a popular event in the season’s calendar as it is the only mixed-sex singles competition played at Miraflores. With a strong field, an exhibition of high quality bowling was anticipated, and duly delivered. The early rounds saw some very closely contested matches with only a single shot difference deciding the winners. A large group of spectators gathered for the semi-finals and they were rewarded with a dramatic spectacle. Tom Cordner played Terry Stone while Fred Stevenson was up against Bill McGurk. Tom got off to a fast start and despite excellent bowling on both sides Terry was never able to claw his way into contention, with Tom ending up victorious by 21 - 10. In the other match, Fred and Bill’s game saw Bill roar into a seemingly irretrievable 17 - 8 lead. However, Fred drew on all his experience and composure to fight back and incredibly run out the winner by 21 - 18. Finals day arrived to see two wily Glaswegians pitted against each other. DERBY DAY: The final saw two Glaswegians face off against each other. and Fred’s loyalty to Celtic, the stage was set for an entertaining and feisty encounter. Once again a sizeable crowd turned out in mixed conditions to witness the action. Tom’s famously strong start came to the fore but Fred’s unflappable resolve saw him pull back, leaving Tom with a wafer-thin 15 - 14 lead after 16 ends. However, Tom regained his form and momentum to take four of the next six ends, winning a worthy championship final 21 - 16.

Masters Mixed Triples sees knife-edge drama THE prestigious annual Mijas Masters Mixed Triples Bowls competition has been contested over four days. There were 34 entries and great enjoyment was had by all. Despite the cold and wet start, the weather improved considerably and the sun shone towards the end. The semi finalists saw Peter and Val Allard and Geoff Collins (Mijas Bowls Club), against J o h n a n d D i n e Wa r n a n d J o h n B e l l ( S a n t a Maria Bowls Club) with a final score of 15 - 13. The other match had Tony and Val Thornton and Dave Wilson (Mijas Bowls Club) versus Alison Hayes, Geoff Herdman and Graham Jarrett (Lauro Bowls Club) - final score: 16 - 15. Both semi-final matches were incredibly tight games worthy of finals, and both could have gone either way. Going through to the final were Peter and Val Allard and Geoff Collins versus Tony and Val Thornton and Dave Wilson, both mixed triples from Mijas Bowls Club. This was quite an event as it has been over 30 years since both finalists were from Mijas Bowls Club. The final was a very competitive match with excellent bowling by all players, the eventual winners being Tony and Val Thornton and Dave Wilson with a score of 18 points to 12 points.
