THE Elola stadium will host the first race of the fourth Urban Racing Circuit in Fuengirola on February 18. In another example of community spirit in the area, the event will raise money for charities like the Spanish Association against Cancer, the Red Cross, and the Association of relatives of Alzheimer’s patients.

AS people get older it does mean that they want to give up sport but equally recognise that sometimes they need to slow down. Walking Football has been steadily growing in popularity and there are three teams in the area of Marbella and Benalmadena. In November last year, one of the teams took part in a tournament in Portugal and after playing for 10 minutes and being named man of the match, 65-year-old Gordon Powell had a sudden heart attack and died. According to spokesman for the club Adam Chandler, who founded Walking Football Spain “A first aider was present at the tournament but a defibrillator was not, and we had to wait until the paramedics arrived before defibrillation started. “We later learnt he had ischemic heart disease and his arteries had hardened and suddenly cut off the blood supply to his heart.” Due to this sad event, Adam has set up a JustGiving page to try to raise €1,000 to allow the clubs to obtain a portable defibrillator and after just a few days, it has raised €310. Channel 5 loves Spain
LAST Friday Channel 5 aired the TV programme Costa Del Celebrity where five celebrities spent two weeks in a villa, sampling life on the Costa Blanca. Anne Diamond, Ainsley Harriott and Christine Hamilton made their way to the Benitachell Bowls Club, where they spent an afternoon filming. They were shown having a lesson with club captain Trefor Evans. Anne Diamond seemed to do rather well and declared that she loved the game and wanted to live there! They followed their lesson with drinks on the terrace, chatting with other club members about expatriate life. In the picture are Tony Lawley, Dudley Davies, Ainsley Harriott, Trefor Evans, Steve Griffin, Christine Hamilton, Yvonne Brown and Anne Diamond. Staying on the Costa Blanca theme, Channel 5 is now showing the third series of Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun which started yesterday (Thursday), with voice-over by John Thomson from Cold Feet. The programme follows the lives of expatriate individuals and businesses as they go about their day to day lives, trying to make the most of their savings or income and generally having a good time.

ÁNGELES MUÑOZ, mayor of Marbella, oversaw the inauguration and blessing of the longed for statue of Jesus of Nazareth. The ceremony took place on the street that bears his name, and has been installed with the support of numerous civic and religious authorities. Muñoz said: “It is a historic and symbolic day because it fulfils a longing of many people in our city that, thanks largely to the Brotherhood, is now a reality. “With the installation of this statue the dream of many people is realised, and the place where it is located is praised. “It fills with pride all those who feel the gaze of the statue, which many call ‘Lord of Marbella’, and of all those who pray, ask and profess authentic devotion. As mayor I am proud to share this special day.”

A SPONSORSHIP agreement has been secured for next month’s Davis Cup contest in Marbella, which features Spain against Britain. The City Council, the Junta de Andalucia regional government, and Costa del Sol Tourism will each contribute €150,000 to the event, which will take place from February 2 to 4. Marbella mayor, Angeles Muñoz, said that the deal: “evidences the institutional as well as economic support to the Davis Cup of the three closest administrations. “The Davis Cup is one of the most important sporting and promotional events this year for Marbella,” she said. “The city has the necessary experience to make it an even bigger success, with a return of €10 million.” Muñoz was joined by Councillor for Sports and Tourism, Francisco Javier Fernandez, the President of Tourism Costa del Sol, Elias Bendodo, and the President of the Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, Margarita del Cid. Fernandez agreed that the deal was a big boost for the region: “Once again Andalucia will be able to show that it can organise this type of event and Marbella gives us the opportunity to make sport a beacon of Andalucian tourism.” Bendodo was equally positive and

Guardia Civil officers targeted in attacks IN a period of less than a week, three members of the Guardia Civil have been struck by vehicles in two separate incidents in La Linea. One attack occurred at the border checkpoint with Gibraltar when, for no apparent reason, the driver of a vehicle drove straight at the officer causing injury to his arm. The driver, who has now been identified, ran off and his vehicle was impounded. It appears that two other officers were also injured in a similar occurrence at the border, although on this occasion the driver remained in the vehicle and fled the scene. For the past year there has been a regular occurrence of attacks on Spanish law enforcement officers in the town because of the crackdown on smuggling of both drugs and tobacco. So sophisticated are some of the alleged crooks in the area, that one group was recently raided as it was using radar to detect police movements on both land and sea. This particular operation by the Guardia Civil also netted, in addition to the radar, large amounts of cash, firearms, vehicles and four RHIBs (rigid hull inflatable boats).

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK in Fuengirola ended with an enjoyable day of activities in the Plaza de España. The public were able to participate in a demonstration by the firefighters on how to react in an area full of smoke. There were also workshops on road safety, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Mayor Ana Mula publicly thanked the Fire Department, Local Police, and the MAPFRE Foundation for their help in making the whole week run smoothly.

New hotels on the block INVESTORS are progressing with plans to open four new hotels in Marbella’s Old Town. With a budget of €15 million from British and Swiss investors working with the Rhone Property Group, the hotels will all be converted from heritage buildings. This represents another sign of the positive tourism climate in Marbella, where more hotel rooms will be provided than ever before. The oldest part of Marbella is one of its greatest attractions, which is why it has caught the eye of financiers. The Rhone Property Group recently presented one of its projects, the boutique hotel
Maison Ardois, which will be a restored 16th century mansion in Calle Ancha. The group’s three other hotels in the area are at different stages of development. They will involve an old four-storey house in the Plaza del Santo Cristo, a building within the castle walls, and the former conservatory of the Plaza Puente de Ronda. “The investors wanted places which would enable clients to discover the real Marbella, the traditional, typical town which few people really know,” said Miguel Cervan, the CEO of Rhone Property.

TORREMOLINOS: Thriving.
TORREMOLINOS is a leading destination for LGBTI visitors, and a tourism boom began in the area in the 50s and 60s. Grand hotels like the Pez Espada were established, and a stream of A-list celebrities started to arrive including Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly and Orson Welles. The first gay bar, Toni’s, opened in 1962. However, the Franco regime continued with the repression of homosexuals, and an infamous surge of arrests happened on June 24, 1971.
One man to be deported in the wake of this was Brian Epstein, producer of the Beatles. Prior to that Epstein had been joined by John Lennon for two weeks of extensive partying in La Nogalera, in 1963. Gay tourism remained in Torremolinos despite the dictatorship, and the fishing village became a Mecca for those looking for their sun, sex and sand. When democracy returned to Spain (homosexuality was legalised in 1979), many new gay-friendly premises emerged
in the area. The current Torremolinos council is now working to take its tourism industry to new heights, encouraged by the strong economic recovery. In May 2017, Torremolinos hosted the first hotel focused exclusively on the LGBTI community in Andalucia. In terms of the number of visitors, Torremolinos is the third biggest LGBTI destination in Spain, (behind Madrid and Barcelona), with tourists from more than 120 different countries.
Hotel group places Gibraltar in Spain AFTER having had the Marriott Hotel website in China shut down for a week, its geographical knowledge has been further brought into question as it also listed Gibraltar as part of Spain. The Chinese authorities took considerable offence to the listing of Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Tibet as separate countries (it considers Taiwan as a province, Tibet as an autonomous region and the other two as special administrative regions) and the hotel group issued a full apology. Since then, eagle-eyed Gibraltarians spotted that Gibraltar was listed as part of Spain and informed Marriott’s European HQ of the error so that the entry could be amended.

MAYOR of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, has attended the opening of the new premises of The American College in Puerto Banus. She was also at the presentation of its American High School baccalaureate programme, which has the approval of the University of Nebraska. Muñoz thanked the college for its significant contribution in making Marbella a destination of academic excellence. Also in attendance was The American College’s Director, Melissa Butler, who observed that the institution has firmly established itself in the Costa del Sol over the past five years.

Money flooding in MILLIONS are to be spent by Mijas Council this year on flood prevention measures for the streets of Las Lagunas. A new drainage system is expected to be finished by early March, and will cover the Las Islas Marianas roundabout, near the Parque Miramar Centre and the water park. The council plans to double its investment budget in this area, which follows increased efforts in the last financial year to tackle repeated flooding in the low-lying locality. The bulk of that investment was made in separating rainwater drains from the rest of the sewage system, and installing new drains. The work has been carried out alongside improvements to street lighting, paving, and cabling for other services. The budget allocated to flood prevention this year is €3.5 million.

THE Estepona Hospitality School has opened its innovative training restaurant for the fifth consecutive year. The Congress Palace will again provide the venue for the restaurant, with the agreement of the council. It is an initiative that allows students to train in a live environment, serving customers and preparing daily menus. To add to the community feel of the concept, the menu will be composed of six dishes sourced from local and seasonal produce. The wine list is also 100 per cent derived from Malaga. The price of the menu is only €10, of which €2 will go to charity according to the

Artistic differences settled TORREMOLINOS Council has put to bed a dispute with local artists who had accused it of showing preferential treatment to businesses from other towns. The month-long stand-off related to what the artists perceived to be the positioning of their street markets in squares with a comparatively lower footfall. They had also complained that this
systematic neglect of local art had resulted in them having to find work in other towns. However, the Council has now announced that it will permit the presence of market stalls in Plaza Union Europea, one of the town’s best known squares. More than 50 local artisans will sell their handmade wares on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 6pm.

MARBELLA has chosen its Venus and Nymphs for the 2018 Marbella Carnival. The part of the Venus has been awarded to Alicia Tejero DomĂnguez, while the Nymphs will be Adalia Furnier Garre and Ainhoa Gomara Lechuga. Councillor Felix Romero thanked all the candidates who took part.

THE water polo teams of Alevin and Cadete, in San Roque, have qualified for the semi-finals of the Andalucian Mixed Championship. The Alevin team goes through tied in third place, while the Cadete team qualifies in fifth. This weekend in the Granada town of Huetor Vega, the Sanroquenos will compete against Marbella and the host town.
Road untested
THE Partido Popular has requested an explanation from the Mijas Council, for having 35 unusable municipal vehicles waiting to have their Vehicle Technical Inspection (ITV). The opposition party has criticised the poor planning of the council for allowing this to happen. It has seen some cars not being driven for months, while denting the public purse.

CASINO ADMIRAL in San Roque will be the venue for a number of recreational activities this year. The council has confirmed that the casino will host a variety of performances, alongside more traditional genres and tribute bands. The site was built after an investment of more than â‚Ź5 million which created hundreds of jobs.
Freedom of La Linea for world famous dancer FLAMENCO dancer, David Morales, who has been performing around the world for nearly 40 years, has been granted the Freedom of La Linea de la Concepcion.
Appearing on stage since the age of six, the dancer, who was born in La Linea, is something of a phenomenon. At the age of 11 he travelled abroad, becoming the first flamenco dancer to perform in Saudi Arabia.

said: “We know the needs of the locality and the population increase we are experiencing, and we are responding.” The Council will be using €5.8 million to construct the new Las Lagunas School and will allocate €1.3 million for the expansion of the Botanical Garden. Mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado commented:
“The good harmony between administrations is what allows us to move forward and get the infrastructure and services our residents need.” The roofs of the Las Cañadas and Sierra de Mijas schools are also in line to be renovated, which will have funding of €115,000 and will benefit more than 2,300 schoolchildren.

Mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado visited La Candelaria recently to announce that it has been awarded one of the new parking lots, along with El Juncal, while the Virgen de la Pena of Mijas Pueblo is to be extended. “It is a priority to ensure that citizens can leave their vehicles without problems. These measures are good for residents, for trade and for visitors,” said Maldonado. The timescale to complete the projects will be approximately three months after the tender process.

THE United States has a luckless habit of firing from the lip. President Trump’s offhand remark about s***hole countries was a classic. Many who should know better are under the illusion that the US is Utopia. In truth there is many a Third World country that recoils in horror at what the United States has become. Scores of tent cities for the homeless are scattered across America’s great and not so great cities. Typically, Los Angeles Skid Row is a no-go zone for tourists. As far as the eye can see, across more than 50 blocks of desperate poverty; it is home to about 8,000 downtrodden, destitute and disadvantaged people living in makeshift tents. The city’s homeless total is 58,000. By day, people fill its streets, footpaths, alleys and parks. A teeming mass with nowhere left to go. At night, America’s poor try to sleep in tarpaulin and plastic sheeting shelters that line footpaths for
blocks on end. Some might find a park bench. More find what space they can for their scant possessions, if indeed they have any, spilling into the street. Many Africans fared better in apartheid South Africa’s shanty towns. This self-styled beacon of democracy was livid when the global community voted no during a UN vote on the status of Jerusalem. Nations that voted against the US were threatened with sanctions and loss of aid (bribes). According to Senator Bernie Sanders, the US has the highest rate of childhood poverty of any major country on earth. The US has more people in prison than any other nation. Nearly 40 per cent of America’s homeless are under 18-years-of-age. Such is the poor performance of the US that it is tedious to set out the list of its failings. Its healthcare system is the most costly but ranks 37th. A total of 51 countries have more hospitals per 1,000, 97 have more hospital beds. Utilities are a right not a privilege, but 124 countries pay less than Americans do. Travel is cheaper in 129 countries, food bills are through the roof. Civil disturbance is com-
monplace. If you are a tourist it is best not to blunder into race-related nogo zones. No worries, you need to be brave to suffer the indignities of airport searches. Detroit, was once one of America’s great cities. Today, it looks as though the US air force has done to Detroit what it is good at doing in the Middle East and Libya, Donbass in Ukraine, and Serbia. As a frequent visitor to the United States during the 1960s my dream was to one day become a citizen as did my sisters. Today, living in that s***hole is my worst nightmare. This exemption, which applies to residents of Spain but also, any inheritors - foreign or not - who at the time of death of the testator were residents of the European Union or European Economic Area (EEA), means that pretty much nobody will pay IHT in this region, except of course if the inheritor happens to be a resident of the UK and Theresa May sets Britain on course for a hard Brexit (if she has not already done so). If the UK does not negotiate a separate agreement with the EU to maintain the status quo currently enjoyed by all EU/EEA residents, the negative impact on inheritance tax will become particularly visible for thousands of potential inheritors from the UK, for whom the maximum deductible amount will be - on average - €16,000 per inheritor, just as any non-EU citizen. The negative effects will equally translate to income obtained in Spain, which will be taxed at 24 per cent - as opposed to 19 per cent now - and without the possibility to deduct costs, expenses, and CGT relief when reinvesting in a habitual domicile, which disappears.

Celebration for 30th anniversary
THE Arts Society Costa del Sol is celebrating 30 years on the coast with an ‘ArtFest’ exhibition. The Arts Society (formerly NADFAS) in the UK is celebrating their Golden Anniversary this year, and at the Costa del Sol branch they are celebrating 30 years on the coast. It is the first society of its kind in Spain. The ‘ArtFest’ is an art competition initiated by The Arts Society for all affiliated societies worldwide. Ten of their artist members are participating, and society members are voting for a number of works to be forwarded to The Arts Society, as photos for an exhibition at their AGM. The Arts Society Costa del Sol will hold an exhibition with 50 works at Atlantis PMR, Centro Comercial Los Olivos, Calahonda from February 2 to March 30. STEPS TO SUCCESS: Mayor Munoz promotes the event.
MARBELLA has been confirmed again as the host city for this year’s 4Days Walking event. It will be the eighth consecutive year of the activity and the dates have been confirmed as running from October 11 to 14. The announcement was made by Mayor Angeles Munoz at the recent International Tourism Fair (FITUR). She commented that it is “an international test that every year adds new participants, with more than 2,500 last time round.” Eighteen nationalities (and potentially more this year) compete along scenic routes of 20 - 30 kilometres. The walkers take in the beach, Puerto Banus, and the Old Town, experiencing Marbella in all its beauty.

www.thelittlegeranium.com WE all love tapas and at The Little Geranium we have a fantastic artistic style tapas menu (lunch only) and it’s very popular with all. The word tapas or tapa means to cover in Spanish. There are many stories relating to the origin of how the tapa was first discovered, but the one that sticks in my mind tells us that King Alfonso
XIII stopped by a famous tavern in Cadiz, where he ordered a cup of wine. The waiter covered the glass with a slice of cured ham before offering it to the king, to protect the wine from the beach sand and the flies (Cadiz is a windy place). The king, after drinking the wine and eating the tapa, ordered another wine with the cover as an essential ingredient, and so tapas were discovered. Tapas started off being very simple, Iberian ham, Manchego cheese, chorizo and breads, but evolved to serving up fish dishes like prawn pil pil, calamari, boquerones with vinegar, or deep fried empanadillas (pastry turnovers filled with meat or vegetables) and padron peppers to name just a few. In many traditional Spanish restau-
rants and chiringuitos they have not evolved much, it is what their clients have come to expect. Then chefs like me come along and try and evolve them drastically, but for the better I hope! We have dishes like black pudding with caramelised pear and Roquefort, small rump steak burger with foie gras, truffled asparagus, goats cheese tempura with honey & truffle, New York lobster roll, crispy duck salad, Thai beef salad, Galician beef with truffle mash and wild mushrooms and much more on our menu. Hardly what King Alfonso had in mind when he ordered a cover for his wine, but my kind of artistic tapas are what makes our lunch time sharing food something a bit special and different.
Tempura of prawns with ponzu dip and sushi
Thai Beef salad sesame & rocket
INGREDIENTS
400g sirloin (or fillet) beef steak, sliced in thin strips 2 tbsp cornflour 1 heaped tbsp sesame seeds Maldon salt to season Sunflower oil, to fry 1 small bag of mixed salad leaves
For the sauce:
1 large clove garlic, finely chopped 1 large thumb sized piece ginger, finely grated 1 stick of lemongrass finely chopped 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar 2 tbsp dark soy sauce 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce (Agri dulche) 1 tsp sesame oil 2 tsp honey Juice of half a lemon
Method
This method of cooking the beef crispy, then coating it in the sauce, crispy adds texture and amazing flavours to this fantastic dish. In a bowl, mix together the beef strips and cornflour and half the sesame seeds until

approx one inch of oil to a high sided frying pan or wok and place over a medium heat.
So popular are our tapas at lunchtime that I have been asked to do a cookery school based solely on tapas. My school usually teaches fine dining dishes and for the first time this February, on the 16th, I am doing such a course, teaching budding chefs and enthusiastic foodies to cook and create amazing flavours of small dishes, artistically presented on beautiful crockery. So preceding this class, I thought I would share some of the recipes with you. Hot off the press here are two fantastic recipes for tapas that I hope you will love. THAI BEEF: Served with rocket.
Once the oil is hot add a piece of beef, if it produces a steady stream of bubbles it should be hot enough. Fry the remaining beef in batches, being sure not to overcrowd the pan (or fryer) or the oil will cool down and it will poach the beef, stopping it from crisping. Drain the crispy beef on a plate lined with kitchen paper. Place all the ingredients for the sauce into a saucepan and bring to a simmer, but do not boil. Place the beef in a bowl and add the sauce and the remaining sesame seeds. Toss to coat completely. Arrange the salad leaves in a small metal ring approx 4cm diameter. Top with the crispy beef and press it down, so that when you remove the ring the beef stays in place. Garnish with some dressed rocket.
100g of Tempura flour (in most supermarkets in Spain) 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp sugar 200ml of sparkling water, very well chilled
For the sauce
200ml light soy sauce (like Tamari) 50 ml fresh orange juice 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon water 1 tablespoon mirin (sweet rice wine) 1 teaspoon of dried chilli seeds (optional)
Method
Firstly make the batter in time for it to rest a bit before using. Put flour in a bowl, add the salt and sugar and then gradually pour in the chilled water and mix, but don’t over mix or gluten will develop and the batter will become heavy. It’s also nice to leave a few lumps which create crispy little bits when the prawns are fried For the sauce mix all the ingredients together and taste. It should taste a little sour from the citrus but not over sour. I add a teaspoon of honey if it is a little too sour to taste. To cook prawns, toss the prepared prawns in the seasoned cornflour. Dip each prawn into the batter and deep fry in a pre heated fryer 190c or, use a saucepan or wok. Fry in batches so that the oil remains hot and the fryer isn’t overcrowded. Drain the prawns on kitchen paper and season well with Maldon salt. Serve immediately with the sauce and the dip.

FIRST of all we shall go through your homework, which I trust you have all worked hard on. It was to create the past participles of a list of verbs. The verbs were all regular, which means that all that was required was to change the ‘-ar’ ending to ‘-ado’ and the ‘-er’ and ‘-ir’ endings to ‘-ido’. Here are the verbs with the answers: Trabajar – trabajado cocinar – cocinado bailar – bailado aprender – aprendido comer – comido firmar – firmado visitar – visitado tener –tenido comprar – comprado conducir – conducido ir – ido cambiar – cambiado. The one that might have made you think twice was ‘ir - ido’, but as you can see it actually behaves
itself as an ordinary regular verb, which makes a change. As I said in the last article, the vast majority of verbs behave in this way, but there are a few that were different, or irregular, which I listed for you. The promise last week was to talk more about the words that translate as ‘have’ or ‘has’ in sentences like: He hablado con mi vecino. I have spoken to my neighbour. Has escrito una carta You have written a letter Ha dormido bien He has slept well Firstly I want to remind you of a principle that we have to learn right at the beginning of our Spanish studies, and that is that you cannot translate words literally from one language to another. The reason I say this now is because a lot of people would automatically assume that ‘I have’ should be translated as ‘tengo’, ‘you have’
as ‘tienes’ and so on. However, ‘tengo’, ‘tienes’ and the other forms of the verb ‘tener’ relate principally to ideas of possession. ‘Tengo una casa’ (I have a house). There are other uses of ‘tener’ such as ‘Tengo una idea’ (I have an idea) or ‘He tenido un accidente’ (I have had an accident) which don’t strictly refer to ‘possession’, but have related meanings and require the use of ‘tener’

as the main verb in the sentence. However, when we say ‘I have spoken’ we are not talking about possessing anything. We don’t own something called ‘spoken’! It is clear that the word ‘have’ in English has an entirely different meaning in this context. In fact, rather than talking about possession or similar, it is being used specifically to create the time in which something happened. If you think about the meaning of the two phrases ‘I speak’ and ‘I have spoken’, you should realise that the only difference between them is to do with time when the speaking was being done. Therefore,

After doing this Paul returned to the UK, but when the single hit number five in the Finnish charts he had to rush back to record their second single and a new album, both of which went to number one. The album, Living in the Western World, by the renamed Paul Oxley’s Unit, went platinum and stayed at the top for 17 weeks. MORE than 40 years ago, a young guitarist from Manchester would never have guessed that he would become a platinum album seller in Finland. With a love for folk music, as well as the pop/rock of bands like The Beatles, he spent his time writing songs, but formed a group performing covers in local pubs and clubs. After spending some time playing in Bournemouth he returned to Manchester and set up Rhode Island Studios, with the help of the sound engineer from 10cc’s Strawberry Studios, to record demos for local bands. Life was ok, but got much better when Paul met an au pair and went with her on holiday to her homeland, Finland. She introduced him to a local covers group who were looking for a sound engineer and he worked with them for a while. Whilst they were rehearsing and had gone outside, Paul picked up a guitar and started playing and singing. The guys in the band returned and asked him who had writ-

When asked why Fuengirola, “It’s because there is such a large Finnish population in the town and I have been invited to start playing a number of gigs in Finnish bar/restaurants which is a great start. “All of my compellations are in English, so with a backbone of Finnish people in the audience I want to attract a British following as well” he told Euro Weekly News. Currently, Paul is working with an American keyboard player and a Spanish flamenco guitarist, appearing as the Paul Oxley Acoustic Trio. About three-quarters of the people treated for depression are women, but about three-quarters of the people who commit suicide are men. Stress can be caused by a number of issues, with work-related issues, unemployment, money worries, bereavement, moving house, and the break-up of a relationship leading the list. Short-term ups and downs are normal, but when you start having long-term problems in one or more of these areas, the stress will mount. That’s not because you’re weak; that’s because you’re normal.
A relentless build-up of pressure, without the opportunity to recover, can lead to harmful stress. The important thing is to recognise the warning signs while you can do something about it. Common signs are eating more or less than normal; mood swings; low
self-esteem; feeling tense or anxious; not sleeping properly (or wanting to sleep all the time); poor memory or forgetfulness and excessive drinking and/or drug use. There may be physical signs too like headaches, irritable bowel syndrome or aches and pains.
If symptoms are making you unwell it would be advisable to seek help without delay. You should certainly consult a health professional if you are depressed because of stress, or if stress is causing you anxiety or leading to panic attacks.

Ascari – not just a pretty race track ASCARI might be best known for having its own circuit in Ronda, but it also manufactures some of the most exclusive luxury cars on the planet. The first vehicle it produced was the Ascari Ecosse (between 1998 and 2000). This came either with a 4.4 litre engine and 300 HP, or 4.7 litres and 400 HP. The latter could accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 4.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 322 kph. The fibreglass body made it very light and €3 million was invested in its development. However, only 17 were actually manufactured. Announcing itself in 2006, the Ascari A10 also had a BMW engine. It was a monster 5.0 V8 with 625 HP and zipping from 0 to 100km/h in only 2.8 seconds. It had a maximum speed of 346 km/h.

Initially the company planned to sell 50 units at €550,000, but ultimately only the prototype was built. The Ascari KZ1 was manufactured between 2003 and 2010 and its name comes from the initials for Dutch tycoon Klaas Zwart, owner and designer of the Ascari racetrack. It had a modified V8 BMW S62 engine, capable of delivering 507 HP. It went from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, and reached a maximum speed of 322 km/h. Each car was sold at €285,000. The Ascari KZ1R started production in 2005. It was designed to compete in racing competitions, while also having a licence for normal road use. The KZ1R also had a V8 engine, with 520 HP at 7,000 rpm. It could reach 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and topped the speedometer at 322 km/h. The KZ1R is made almost entirely of carbon fibre and sells at €150,000.

Sticking it to their opponents THE Benalmadena Manuel Rico Sports Centre has hosted the latest round of matches in the 65th Spanish Championship Men’s First Division of indoor hockey. After a tough opening contest, the Benalmadena team was victorious over Alcala Hockey Club, 6 - 4. The second game saw them face the University of Alicante (first place in the Levante League). In an incredibly close encounter, which saw a standout performance from local goalkeeper German Perez, Benalmadena prevailed in a 3 - 2 win. Buoyed by these results the team crushed their third opponents Canary Aridaman 11 - 1 in a dominant display.
The next stage of the Spanish Championship will take place in Rincon on February 2 - 4, where the Benalmadenas will compete against clubs from Madrid, Ourense, and Gijon. On a national level, the cities of Benalmadena and Malaga will again host the Five Nations International Hockey tournament. This will take place from tomorrow until February 4 and will feature Spain, Scotland, Ireland, the US, and Canada. Get prepared for the half marathon TORREMOLINOS will host its annual half marathon on Sunday February 4, the 29th time it has been held. Snooker - Mark Allen became the first Northern Irishman in 31 years, since Dennis Taylor in 1987, to win the Masters Championship at London’s Ally Pally. Allen beat Welshman Kyren Wilson 10 - 7 in the final, having dumped out reigning champion Ronnie O’Sullivan 6 - 1 at the quarter-final stage. Golf - England’s Tommy Fleetwood duly retained his Abu Dhabi championship title, while Spaniard Sergia Garcia won the Singapore Open. Currently underway are the Dubai and Bahamas LPGA classics and the USA Torrey Pines Open. * The funeral takes place on Tuesday of the former WBA, Aston Villa, Wolves, Coventry, Wycombe, Chester and England footballer Cyrille Regis, who died recently, aged 59. Top man, a pioneer for black players, he was my hero, loved by many and will be sadly missed. RIP top man.
Earlier this week, the 2nd legs of the Carabao LC semi-finals took place between Chelsea and Arsenal (0 - 0) and Bristol City v. Manchester City (1 - 2), while there has also been quarter-final action in the Checkatrade Trophy. The transfer window closes next Wednesday, so we can expect a few big-named players to find new clubs following the swap deal involving Alex Sanchez (Arsenal) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Manchester United). Latest news - The former Blackpool and England right-back Jimmy Armfield has died from cancer, aged 82. He made 627 appearances for the Seasiders (1954 - 71) and won 43 England caps. RIP.
