The Tax Agency reveals wealthiest towns in Malaga Province by Michael Cano THE town of Benahavis has been declared as having the highest average annual gross income per capita in the whole of Malaga province at €28,428.

This is according to 2015 figures just released by the Spanish Tax Agency after reviewing the detailed income reports of every town and city in Spain with a population in excess of 1,000. With a registered population of just 7,342, Benahavis has a large number of expatriates, many of whom may boost their declared in-

come with overseas payments, but this is the first time that the town has been able to push the usual winner Rincon de la Victoria into second place. Malaga City with 569,009 inhabitants takes third place, followed by Marbella and Alhaurin de la Torre with the wage earners in a total of 13 towns having average gross earnings in excess of €20,000. When looking further into Andalucia, perhaps surprisingly five towns in Cadiz province have larger gross annual incomes than both Malaga and Marbella, with residents in La Linea de la Concepcion actually earning more than those living in Benalmadena, Torremolinos and Fuengirola.

Marbella Mayor agrees €17.8 million project

DESPITE the building of the tunnel under San Pedro Alcantara in an effort to reduce delays, the problem of traffic jams between the town and Puerto Banus continues. Recently returned Mayor of Marbella Ángeles Muñoz made a direct appeal to the minister responsible in Madrid, Íñigo de la Serna to explain the situation and to request assistance in building a third lane within the A-7. The Minister of Public Works confirmed that the proposal had been approved at a cost of €17.8 million and includes a new pedestrian bridge between Puerto Banus and Nueva Andalucia as a number of people have been run over trying to dash across the road. This project which also includes the improvement of exits to and from the A-7 will shortly go to tender and it is recognised that the work once commenced could cause worse short term problems but should make the roads clearer and safer especially with the influx of summer tourists. Mayor Muñoz also took the opportunity to explain her plans for improvement of the main access roads to the A-7 in the area of Las Chapas which will cost an annual €4 million to ensure safe and faster flow from the remaining Marbella Arch to the Costa del Sol Hospital. One woman’s fight against a little understood but crippling disease by Michael Cano KIM WAGNER is a perfect example of how a little understood disease could devastate a young woman and put her life on hold. Amazingly Lyme disease is better understood by vets than it is by medical doctors as it is transferred from animals (often dogs) by ticks which bite humans and it can cause a number of debilitating illnesses. What confuses the medical profession is that it can affect so many different parts of the body including the heart, muscles, bones and the brain leaving the sufferer desperate for a cure yet doctors con-

fused by the symptoms displayed. The longer the disease is left untreated, the worse the afflictions and the more difficult it is to cure yet a simple blood test can identify the existence of Lyme and if caught within 48 hours of infection, can be cured in most cases by a simple course of antibiotics. Kim who comes from a medical family and has lived on the Costa del Sol since 2002 has been a sufferer for nine years and for much of that time, had no idea what was causing her so many problems. Having obtained a degree in Psychology at university in the UK, she returned to London to study for a

Master’s degree but started to feel lethargic and suffered a great deal of pain, quickly getting to the stage where she could barely walk and couldn’t even properly feed herself. Bearing in mind that her father is a well-qualified doctor who regularly travelled between Spain and his Dutch homeland, access to experts in the medical profession was easy but because Lyme is so little understood, it took a considerable time before it was suggested that she be tested for the disease. As soon as the illness was diagnosed, Kim was treated by a Dutch Lyme specialist Dr Kingma and she started to show a steady improve-

Belgian resident arrested after alleged abuse A 48-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of physical and psychological abuse after his wife attempted to commit suicide. The Belgian resident of Torre del Mar was arrested after his wife, 43, was seen threatening to jump off of the balcony of their home. The woman, who is also Belgian, was prevented from jumping by a male neighbour who had access to their house. Officers reported that the woman had a number of bruises on her body, which suggested physical abuse and ultimately led to the man’s arrest. The arrest comes after the alleged offences happened over the course of a year.

Man fined €540 over dog care failings A MAN has been fined hundreds of Euros by a court in Fuengirola after his dog was found tied up and starved According to a judge, the man left the dog, “without water or food fit for consumption and tied with a short chain of iron,”direcly around his neck. The man first came to the attention of animal welfare officers after a neighbour complained he was keeping his dog in a “poor state” of care and was “abandoned,” to his fate The case follows a spate of dog poisoningsacross the Costa del Sol with more than 10 dying in one week. One dog was killed after eating poison in a playground in La Campana, forcing police to close the park. The play area on Avenida Miguel de Cervantes is used by residents with and without pets, as well as children. One resident, Francisco Montijano, told a publication, “in addition to animals, it could affect some of the children who play there every day.” Other neighbours told media outlets the poison comes in a “barely perceptible” liquid form, and have speculated the poison may have been left in three locations.

Man jailed for abusing mother-in-law

A MAN has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for a series of sexual abuses toward his mother-in-law. The victim, aged 85, was subjected to a number of incidents over a period of time which her son-in-law recorded using his mobile phone and stored them

on his personal computer. The total sentence was made up of seven years for the abuse, plus another five years for sexual exploitation and corruption. The man, as well as being part of the woman’s family, was also one of the people formally charged with caring for her.

Art disappears Police have collected samples of the liquid but residents remain concerned, telling one publication, “we are afraid to take our dogs out and have to walk them with our eyes pealed to stop them from going into the undergrowth and eating something which could kill them.” In July it was revealed The Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service (Seprona) was investigating the appearance of pesticides disguised as dog treats around Torremolinos. The officers warned the crime, which was reported by residents, carries a fine of up to €300,000 and up to two years in prison.

Police also warned dog and cat owners the poison, which has been strategically placed in areas frequented by animals, could be lethal and also poses a threat to children. The authorities recommend anyone finding a poisoned animal to not touch it and instead call the police or Seprona and ask for the area to be cleaned in case of further poison. The Ministry of the Environment has also collaborated with Seprona to launch the Andalucian Strategy Against Poison (EAV) to raise “social awareness and encourage the prevention of poison use as well as promoting police action.”

by Michael Cano A CRAFTY burglar who broke into a music store in Malaga city and removed electric guitars and amplifiers has been arrested together with his accomplices. The man made a hole in the ceiling (butrรณn) of the store and removed a large number of instruments and equipment and quickly passed them to accomplices (three men and a woman) who were instructed to sell them as second hand items to stores around the city at discounted prices.

Officers from the National Police established that a woman was trying to sell one of the guitars and then discovered other instruments in music stores around Malaga allowing them to establish the names of those involved and arrested them all for receiving stolen property or knowingly trying to sell it on. The person responsible for the actual robbery was identified and he too was arrested with a total of seven electric guitars, three electric tuners, four guitar cases and an amplifier being recovered from various properties.

Work in progress Maintenance work continues in the schools of Mijas. Councillor for Education, Hipolito Zapico visited the El Limonar Children’s School after new flooring was installed and repair works were completed. He explained, “we continue to work on improving the municipality’s schools, improving all the areas we can to benefit students.” He added the works to El Limonar had cost around €6,000 to improve flooring in classrooms and repair mosquito screens. The councillor also outlined further plans for the coming year, “for next year we are putting together a new plan for improvements centered around the Mijas Pueblo nursery which will include improvements to flooring and other type of works necessary to ensuring these centres function fully.” Councillor Zapico added, “we continue working in collaboration with the educational community and continuing to plan for a the much sought-after institute in Las Lagunas and school in La Cala.” He confirmed the council’s 2018 budget would include funding for a school in Las Lagunas, adding, “we are waiting to draft the project’s details before we put it out to tender which we believe will happen soon. We will continue to take steps to provide the necessary education infrastructure in the municipality and this will always involve collaboration between councils and the educational community.”

AROUND 20 unemployed people in Malaga have fallen victim to a scam advertising a fake grape harvesting job in France. The advert, which was posted on website Milanuncios, asked prospective applicants for €85 towards the cost of coming to France to take up a job helping with the wine harvest. In return the advert offered over €4,000 worth of work to employees. Police now say this was a “massive scam.” On investigating, National Police found the man had posted 26 job adverts on the website, leaving around 20 out of pocket in Malaga province, and also another 170 in other areas of Spain including Madrid, Murcia and Valencia. The alleged perpetrator, Juan Antonio P, aged 40, previously lived in Antequera and was arrested in Tenerife. He is said to have posted messages offering people €87.84 a day, working six days a week for nine weeks; a total sum of €4,743. Police believe the man may have made around €16,000 from the scam. The adverts were posted on Milanuncios between late May and early June. Allegedly Juan Antonio P exchanged telephone numbers with interested parties, giving them details of the work and eventually asking for €85 to cover the cost of their transport to and from France. When potential employees went to the bus station to catch the supposed coach to France, however, they found no transport had been arranged and the man’s phone turned off.

QUALITY: works to enhance towns main tourist routes continue

by Pippa Harris WORKS to La Cala de Mijas’s Calle Antequera have reached the half way stage. The mayor of the town, Juan Carlos Maldonado, and the Councillor for Infrastructures, Jose Carlos Martin, visited the works to see their progress. The Mayor explained, “this reform will mean a jump in the quality of life of residents in addition to bringing an aesthetic addition to one of the area’s tourist routes in the heart of the town. We will continue to work in La Cala to improve infrastructures and services in addition to fulfilling our commitments.” He went on, “the work the council carries out is always done with the backing of residents and we always take their views in account and try to use their suggestions wherever possible.”

He added, “the works include a complete remodeling of all services, substantially improving the facilities offered to residents. Apart from separating sewage and rainwater systems, we will also have new electricity, telecommunications and water suppliesas well as street lighting.” Councillor Martin added, “the pavement will provide a more modern aesthetic in line with the other worksgoing on around the municipality.” The initiative has seen an investment of €425,691 and joins other workson CalleBenaojan, Paseo de Andaluciaand the roundabout on Boulevard de la Cala. In addition several areas are being widened and asphalted to help those with reduced mobility.The council added it is “continuing to promote La Cala de Mijas and bringing new infrastructure to the area which will improve security and quality of life for residents.”

€150,000 lighting saving MIJAS COUNCIL is set to save thousands by switching its street lights to LED bulbs on AvenidaAndalucia. The street’s103 lights will now cost the council a negligible amount to run each year. Councillor for Energy Efficiency, Jose Antonio Gonzalez, visited the area, explaining, “with this plan we hope to not only save on energy consumption but also user cleaner and more long-lasting energy.” The works costs around €20,000 but will see €150,000 saved over the next 10 years, according to the council. Councillor Gonzalez explained, “this type of bulb has a 10 year guarantee and needsmuch lessmaintenance so in addition to saving energy we are also able to better use this department’s resources.” These works come in addition to those already carried out by the area in La Murallaand Molino de Viento. Councillor Gonzalez explain “we want to carry on doing these upgrades not only in our squares and main avenues but eventually also in neighbourhoods, installing more of this clean and long-lasting energy source in the greatest number of areas possible in the municiaplity.”

EFFICIENCY: 19,000 lights lights replaced around Mijas The Department of Energy Efficiency explained the works have seen a total of 19,000 lights replaced around the municiapltiy, “from replacements LED bulbs, to repairs of faults or other types of work which

require the input of municipal operators. The council thanks them for the work they do.” He concluded by reminding residents they can report any incidents to the council who can then come and fix the issue.

King of Pop paid €14,000 per Facebook post

Enrique Iglesias was paid €115,000 by the Jubilee Society of the Government of Cantabria in northern Spain for 8 social media posts promoting his concert in Santander in July. Widely regarded as the ‘King of Latin Pop’, Iglesias is said to have raked in over €14,000 per post – three on Facebook, three on Twitter and two on Instagram – which went out to some 70 million followers. The social media posts were put out during and after the event, which was one of the main acts of the Lebaniego Jubilee Year, a religious and cultural event in the region. The opposing Popular Party has

complained that the posts did not once mention the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liebana or the Lebaniego Jubilee Year, but Iglesias’s advertising and social media management company said “everything is translated into numbers” and tourism in the region increased that month.

Sign of the times MIJAS is to renew all its street signs in a €200,000 project. The first signs will be replaced in Los Santos, Las Lagunas, while three further neigbourhoods will see new street signs installed shortly after.

The council explained €150,000 had been put aside for horizontal signage, and €50,000 for vertical. Councillor for Operational Services, Jose Carlos Martin, explained, “an external company is in charge of implementing the work carried out by municipal operators.” The news comes after Mijas Council recently committed to naming any new streets after women in an effort to improve equality. The council announced it has already begun to receive suggested female names following a school campaign to level the playing field between streets named after women and those after men. Local women’s associations have been sending in proposals after the council decided to name all new roads after a project entitled I deserve a street (I deserve a street), carried out by students at Mijas’ IES Cartima school, which found the number named after women is 42, compared to 178 named after men. The students carried out research of 220 road names and found that of the few streets

named after women, a remarkable 60% took the name of saints rather than famous female figures. The town councilor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona, met with Rosa Liarte, the teacher from IES Cartima, last month to discuss the campaign, commenting, “we found it very interesting because it shows it still takes so much for women to be noticed. The council wants to prioritize equality which is why we wanted to get involved with the project Rosa has presented us. “ The campaign began in an Equality and Social Change class when students were dealing with the issue of “backdoor sexism.” Through their research they found the number of streets named after men was almost four times the amount named after women. MsLiarte explained “the children questioned whether sexism still existed so I set out to analyze the streets of Cartama to see how many of them had a man’s name and how many women, and when they saw the results, the children could not believe it. “ It seems some of Mijas’s road signs will also be in Japanese after the municipality was chosen to represent Andalucia in attracting Japanese tourists. The town was selected alongside Malaga, Ronda and Nerja to take part in an initiative to improve the region’s competitiveness in the Japanese market. With more than 12,000 visitors in the last year, Mijas is one of the province’s preferred destinations among the Japanese, according

The entrepreneurs were received at the town hall by the Councillor for Foreign People, Roy Perez, and the Danish Consul in Malaga, Marisa Moreno. Councillor Perez explained, “we continue to strengthen ties with the foreign community. This time we welcome this group of entrepreneurs to show them what kind of businesses are already in place in our municipality and encourage them to expand their business by establishing in Mijas.” He added, “we must take into account that in our municipality there are more than 125 nationalities which makes this municipal area a unique enclave for developing companies of all types and for all different nationalities of people.” In addition to visiting the council, the group of entrepreneurs visited the Danish House and the Danish shopping centre, Centro Idea. Councillor Perez explained, “with almost a thousand Danish residents in Mijas, we

Roald Dahl´s stories are timeless and his inspiring and wacky characters continue to live on today, more than 40 years after they were originally created. The Fantastic Mr Fox, Willy Wonka and The Witches were just some of the colourful characters that the teachers and the children chose to celebrate on the day. Their lessons were all themed around Roald Dahl and his books with the whole school taking part. €222,000 road improvements REMODELLING works have begun to Calle Ollerias in Fuengirola. The whole road will be refurbished along its 170 metre length, from Calle Cruz to Calle Antonio Sedeño Cantos. The Councillor for Works and Infrastructure, Jose Sanchez, announced work has already begun on one of the town’s central streets. The town’s Mayor, Ana Mula, committed to the work following requests from residents. Calle Antonio Sedeño Cantos was also recently refurbished at a cost of almost €576,000. Calle Ollerias covers a total of 1,100 square metres and will have all its service networks modernised.Councillor Sanchez explained the storm and sewage water networks will be doubled in size, while new electricity, telephone and gas networks will also be installed. Around six new LED street lights will also be fitted so electricity bills will be reduced as well as the emission of greenhouse gases. The road’s pavements will be widened to 2.4 metres to improve accessibility and a perimeter wall along the length of the road will be constructed. In addi-

Improvement works POLITICIANS in Mijas have asked the Junta de Andalucia to refurbish the Mijas Pueblo-Benalmadena road. The Junta had improved several section of the roads linking Mijas Pueblo with Fuengirola and Alhaurin El Grande, but left out the Benalmadena road. The narrow through-road is used by hundreds of vehicles and cyclists every day, which, at times, lead to accidents due to its poor state, according to the Partido Popular (PP). The A-386, which is owned by the Junta de Andalucia, is in need of asphalt, according to Santiago Martin, a member of the local party. He explained, “in March we asked for the works and the Junta said they would do it. Several sections of the roads connecting the town with Fuengirola and Alhaurin El Grande have been paved and decorated and it seems that this road has been forgotten.” The curved road presents visibility problems for road users and has several potholes. Along the road are also several housing estates, houses and residential centres, includingBellavistaand Osunillas which make daily use of it. Alzheimer’s help MIJAS COUNCIL has thanked the Association of Relatives and Patients of Alzheimer’s (AFAM) in Mijas and Fuengirola for its work. Councillor for Social Services, Mari Carmen Carmona, visited the association’s facilities to show, once again, her support for the organisation which provides help across the municipality. She commented, “we want to thank them for all the good work they do for our society and how they are able to get to places the council can not. Without their work the lives of all these people would be much more difficult.” Councillor Carmona toured the centre, taking a look at the therapies on offer. She explained, “we know the effort involved in maintaining facilities and services of this nature, so we want to contribute our share of funds. This year we have allocated about €70,000 in subsidies that go either towards family respite, which is vital, or to specific programmes. The council will always show the assocation the gratitude and support of the people of Mijas.” She added, “apart from the subsidies that we have been able to grant to the association, our task is also promotion. The council will always try to market and promote their fundraising campaigns because we believe that it is

Master Chef cooking workshop A COOKING course for young people in Los Boliches is open for registration until October 30. The workshop, aimed at 16 to 29-year-olds, has been put together by Fuengirola’s Department for Promotion and Development and hopes to get more young people jobs in the catering sector. The department’s Councillor, Carmen Diaz, explained the cooking course is one of several initiatives designed to reach around 90 people under 30, the cooking workshop itself has room for15 people. This course will take place in the kitchen ofEdificioColores and will teach 805 hours of theoretical classes and 100 hours of practical classes, as well as offering cross training

with other subjects and modules of English. The course will begin in November and is open to those aged 16 to 29who are registered in the National Youth Guarantee System. It’s electrifying works Getting THE FIRST stage of power line works in the Islas Marianas area are complete. The mayor of Infrastructures, Jose Carlos Martin announced Endesa will start the second stage of works next month. The project will see the company digging up roads to bury power cables. Councillor Martin explained,”this second phase will consist of adapting the high voltage line. The existing one will be opened up and its wiring replaced.” He added,”once finished, we will begin the third phase of renovating the roundabout.” The council came to a financial agreement with Endesa to fund the works following months of uncertainty. Britain´s ghost navy AS RECENTLY as the 1960s Britain’s Merchant Navy was the largest in the world. It was said that 350,000 British seaman and officers served under the Red Ensign. The Ellerman shipping company alone boasted that it could put a ship into any port in the world within 24-hours. Formed in 1892 with £800,000 one of the world’s greatest maritime fleets collapsed in 2004. Proportionately, British seamen suffered higher losses during WWII than did RAF Bomber Command. When in 1941 the Red Army was beaten back to the gates of Moscow, Leningrad and Stalingrad, Churchill and U.S. President Roosevelt appropriated Britain’s merchant navy and rushed aid to the Bolsheviks. Rescuing Bolshevism sank 101 British merchant ships and cost the lives of 3,000 British seamen. In total, 30,248 British sailors lost their lives during WWII. Up until 1966 70,000 cadets attended the 3-month training courses at the school for seamanship in Sharpness. There was a similar school on Gravesend. Today, just 250 ratings are being trained, mostly for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, an arm of the Royal Navy.

I was admiring shirts in one of the ubiquitous sales at Zenia Boulevard the other day, when the Princess, fresh from her own browsing, tapped me on the shoulder and suggested solemnly that I had more than enough shirts already taking up valuable space. I couldn’t help noticing that she was toting a suspiciously large Zara bag at the time, but I said nothing. But she was right, and I resolved then and there to have a good old sort out when we got home. I am always grateful for my wife’s help when deciding what to keep and what to donate to charity or chuck out. “You haven’t worn that since we got married”, she might say. “So?” “That was thirty eight years ago.” “Fair point” I would concede. “But you never know.” And so it will go on until I

make what I consider the minimum amount of concessions, and she is happy that at least a small clearing has been made in the forest of menswear. Then I get to the sock drawer and I know what I will find, or more to the point what I will not find, because there will be an assortment of socks without partners. What is it with this sock thing? Sometimes of course the missing piece of footwear is easily explained; either stuck to the drum of the washing machine, or inadvertently left in the bottom of the linen basket. Mine occasionally show up in the cat’s basket and once I found one in my lunch box between two pieces of wholegrain bread and garnished with tomato and lettuce, but that was just the Princess having a joke. I split my sides laughing. But most of the time it’s as if they had never existed and

simply disappear off the face of the earth. And it’s always the better quality ones that vanish; a Nike or a Pringle of Scotland for example, never the three pairs for five euro jobs. And apart from the exceptions mentioned, they never turn up – ever. Is this some mysterious intergalactic practice? A kinky alien race abducting odd footwear for their own perverted ends? A sort of “Beam me up socky.” Because the really weird thing is, these items never even make it to the washing line. They simply go into the machine, but never come out. I think I will start wearing odd socks, in the hope that I will become known as ‘The eccentric gentleman of Los Dolses’.

Without imports Britain is totally incapacitated within the week. But none dare call it treason.

Initially supporting the Menshevik Internationalists faction within the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, he joined the Bolsheviks (“majority”) just before the 1917 October Revolution, immediately becoming a leader within the Communist Party. He would go on to become one of the seven members of the first Politburo, founded in 1917 to manage the Bolshevik Revolution.[2] During the early days of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) and the Soviet Union, he served first as People’s Commissar for Foreign Affairs and later as the founder and commander of the Red Army, with the title of People’s Commissar of Military and Naval Affairs along Vladimir Lenin launched a nearly bloodless coup d’état against the Duma’s provisional government.

MIJAS COUNCIL is offering tourism courses for the unemployed. The course, for which registration is open until October 27, will offer 15 free places for those who are unemployed and living in the municipality. Laura Moreno, Councillor for Development, explained, “we continue to promote training in Mijas aimed at improving integration into thelabour market for the more than 6,000 unemployed people in the area. The council is committed to giving out residents the resources we have available.” She added, it will “join others already offered in gardening and construction.” The 60-hour course will be followed by voluntary practice exercises for participants who wish to extend their training. The Red Army fought for the Lenin’s Bolshevik government. The White Army represented a large group of loosely al allied forces, including monarchists, capi capitalists and supporters of democratic socialism. The Russian Civil War ended in 1923 with Lenin’s Red Army claiming vic victory and establishing the Soviet Union. Bolsheviks, led by leftist revolution revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, seized power and destroyed the tradition of Czarist rule. The Bolsheviks would later become the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. The Russian Revolution of 1917 was one of the most explosive political events of the twentieth century. The violent revolution had marked the end of the Romanov dynasty and centuries of Russian Imperial rule. After leading a failed struggle of the left opposition against the policies and the rise of a new dictator Joseph Stalin in the 1920s, and against the increasing role of the bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, Trotsky was removed from power in October 1927, and expelled from the Communist Party the next month. And then exiled from Russia in February 1929. As the head of the Fourth International brigade, Trotsky continued to oppose the Stalinist bureaucracy in the Soviet Union from exile. On 20

August 1940, Trotsky was assassinated by Ramón Mercader, a Spanish-born NKVD agent, passing away the next day in a hospital. Mercader, who attacked Trotsky with an Ice axe, acted upon instruction from Stalin and was nearly beaten to death by Trotsky’s bodyguards, with Mercader spending 20 years in a Mexican prison for murdering Trotsky. Stalin presented Mercader with an Order of Lenin. The last remaining Communist countries are still Russia, and China, but in both cases the Redness of their flags have faded to a much paler colour, as the Russian and Chinese workers know the colour of their money in the bank, is more important to them than the colour of their flags. IN THE last article we started turning our verbs from first person “I” forms to second person “you” forms, and we distinguished between tú and usted, that is the informal and extra-polite ways of expressing “you” in Spanish. Since the beginning of these articles we have been looking at these as part of a particular kind of sentence – that is, linking them to other verbs to express intentions, obligations and preferences. However, verbs are not always used in this way, so today we are going to remind ourselves briefly of how they can be used in other simple ways, and gently extend our range of possibilities. I’ll throw a few new words in, but you should be well able to cope with this by now!

There’s a chance none of that makes any sense at all – so let’s get down to practicalities and give you a range of real examples. For example – the verb querer (to want). Quiero viajar a Beijing. I want to travel to Beijing. ¿Quieres comprar un coche nuevo? Do you want to buy a new car? - informal ¿No quiere estudiar más? Don’t you want to study any more? – formal But not forgetting the simpler use of this verb. No quiero más postre, gracias. I don’t want any more pudding, thank you.

In this last example, given that the formal form is being used, the correct translation is really “What would you like?” as that is what we would actually say in English. Notice that the word usted is optional, but it sometimes gets put in to make the sentence sound more courteous. I can’t resist a little digression here, even though it’s not strictly relevant to what we are looking at. It is in answer to the question – can’t the verb querer also mean “to love”? Yes it can. It also means “to love” in the romantic, personal sense, not in the sense of loving fish and chips. Therefore, te quiero means “I love you”. It can also mean “I want you”. I don’t think we’re going to go any further down this road at the moment. We can go through the same sort of process with necesitar “to need”. Necesito firmar estos papeles. I need to sign these papers. ¿Necesitas un descanso? Do you need a break? No necesita tomar más medicamento. You don’t need to take any more medicine.

Doing their bit to battle Breast Cancer A SMALL charity based in La Cala de Mijas raised more than €35,000 in a single night to fund Breast Cancer screening. Positively Pink which is mainly supported by residents and holiday home owners in La Cala was set up 12 years ago by Lorraine and John Palmer proprietors of El Oceano Hotel after Lorraine had to be checked for cancer herself. Although it didn’t take too long for the results to show that she was clear, Lorraine remembers how worried she was, imagining the worst and vowed that she would do all that she could to make life easier for women in the Costa del Sol. Now, with a small group of unpaid volunteers, she manages the charity and over the years thousands of women have been checked and whenever the news is bad, there is always someone from the charity on hand to give advice of simply listen. Funding is the biggest problem as each screening has to be paid for which is why the Pink Ball is

so important and this year, more money than ever was raised, breaking the previous record by €5,000. Many guests reserve their tables a year in advance and either donate fantastic gifts or bid in the charity auction which this year was conducted by former model turned actress, the delightful Lorraine Chase who flew over to the Costa especially for this event. With superb food, great entertainment and a few glasses of wine, the enthusiastic guests dug deep into their pockets to raise funds for this great cause. One regular attendee, Charlie Mullins of Pimlico Plumbers known for his outspokenfight against Brexit donated a number of items for sale but as he was unable to obtain a flight to allow him to take part in the evening, generously donated a further €5,000 helping the Pink Ball to break its previous record. Autumn trekking WALKING FANS are in for a treat when the new urban hiking route opens in Los Boliches on November 11. The event, which leaves from Plaza de San Rafael, costs €3 and sees walkers trek through Los Pacos, Torreblanca and Parque de Las Presas,covering eight kilometres. Fuengirola’sCouncillor for Sports, Pedro Cuevas, announced the route would start at 9am, explaining, “on November 11 we begin the urban trekking programme, which started last season, so that all our users and all Fuengirola residents who want to get involved get to find out aboutFuengirola walking with the Department

of Sports,” adding, “our technicians have designed a series of circuits where you can get in shape and enjoy everything that Fuengirolahas to offer.” Cuevas went on, “the route only costs €3 and participants will receive a t-shirt, pack of fruit and water; everything you need to walk the route.” He added, “we will try to offer an urban route once every month so that by the end of the season you get to see all the tracks Fuengirola has on offer.” Pedro Cuevas spoke about the event with a technician of the Department of Sports, Agustn Molina. Molina commented, “we hope this activity will make people

want to start doing a little sport and what better way to start than with walking, which is the healthiest form of exercise and always beneficial. IngredIents 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves – pounded, 1/4 inch thick, 1/4 cup plain flour for coating, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano, 4 tablespoons butter, 4 tablespoons olive oil, 1 cup sliced mushrooms, 1/2 cup Marsala wine, 1/4 cup cooking sherry

dIrectIons 1. In a shallow dish or bowl, mix together the flour, salt, pepper and oregano. Coat chicken pieces in flour mixture. 2. In a large frying pan, melt butter in oil over medium heat. Place chicken in the pan, and lightly brown. Turn over chicken pieces, and add mushrooms. Pour in wine and sherry. Cover frying pan; simmer chicken 10 minutes, turning once, until no longer pink and juices run clear.

Reduce heat to low, cover saucepan, and simmer until lamb is cooked through and potatoes are tender, about 45 minutes. 5. Afa Algea Algae form the primeval start to all life; they are rootless and leafless plants. Many types divide themselves millions of times per day. Male fertility worries for future reproduction

ACCORDING to the British Medical Journal (BMJ) urgent action is needed to investigate disturbing trends in men’s reproductive health. Professor Niels Skakkebaek at the University of Copenhagen points to research showing significant declines in sperm counts among men in the Western world, and says we must act now to find out what could be causing such disturbing trends. The research reviewed thousands of studies and concluded that sperm concentration had fallen by 52 per cent among men in Western countries between 1973 and 2011. Should we be concerned? Is male reproductive health really at risk, asks Skakkebaek?

He suggests that data on the quality of semen should be interpreted alongside trends in testicular cancers, as reports suggest that countries with a high incidence of this cancer have generally lower semen quality and vice versa. Worryingly, incidence of this cancer has risen substantially over the past few decades, particularly in young men, he writes. What could be causing such disturbing trends, he asks? The short answer is that we do not know. However, data showing that the incidence of testicular cancer has more than doubled in recent decades leaves little doubt that we should look into environmental causes – including lifestyle effects.

Studies suggest that modern lifestyles are associated with increased exposure to various endocrine disrupting chemicals such as pesticides that together may be harmful to wildlife and humans even though exposure to individual chemicals is low, he explains. He points out that more and more children are now born after fertility treatments. However, despite increased use of assisted reproduction, fertility rates in many countries remain well below the replacement rate of an average of 2.1 children per woman.

How pets cope DEBUNKED: Three common with loss cat myths THINK you know cats? Think again. We separate fact from fiction and debunk three common moggy myths... 1. Cats are unloving, if you want a loving pet get a dog Perhaps the greatest debate of modern times is whether dogs or cats make better pets and one argument on the side of dogs is that cats are unloving. Domestic cats are, by their nature, more independent than domestic dogs – in part because they weren’t bred to spend a lot of time around humans and also because the wild ancestors of our house felines don’t live naturally in the same sort of family groups that canines do. A recent study by the University of Lincoln found that cats don’t show signs of distress when their owners leave and aren’t particularly bothered when their owner returns to them. But, as anyone who’s come home from a hard day’s graft to have their cat jump on to their lap for a fuss will testify, cats do show affection towards their owners and many do like to be stroked and patted. Purring is surely evidence enough that… Have you ever wondered what happens to a pet when they lose their human or animal companion? Do pets grieve? Like humans, pets too show signs that could be interpreted as grief. When an owner or fellow housemate passes away, pets may experience: • loss of appetite • change in sleep patterns • crying or searching • a need for extra attention • a generally sad demeanour But you should also note you may not witness any of these changes. Many anecdotes suggest that animals do feel what humans call ‘grief’, including an understanding that the deceased is not coming back, but there is little scientific evidence to back this up. What we do know is that many species are affected by loss and experience feelings of sadness and loneliness. Should I get another pet to keep them company? When a pet passes away it can be tempting to get another quickly, not only for your own benefit, but so your surviving pet will have another companion, but don’t rush into this. You should wait a while before introducing another pet to your cat. Remember, each pet is an individual and different species bond with each other in different ways.

Dogs are sociable animals who live in family groups, so your surviving dog is likely to adapt well to a new canine if the pair are a good match. Cats have a very different social structure to dogs and by their nature don’t always bond with other cats, even if they have lived alongside them peacefully for many years. Give your surviving cat time to adapt to life without their companion and avoid getting a new cat or kitten straight away. If, after a few months, you think your cat would be happy with a new friend, get in touch with your local rehoming centre. Rabbits are extremely sociable animals and may react badly to the death of a companion. The best thing to do is find your bunny a new partner quickly. Introductions should be carried out slowly. Only get a new pet if you feel it is the right thing for you, your family and your pets. How to help your pet Keep your surviving pet’s routine as similar as you can. Pets thrive on routine, so any event that disrupts this can be upsetting. Make sure they are eating, drinking and toileting properly. Pheromones may help to calm dogs and cats that are stressed. Ask your vet about these. Give your pet lots of love and attention and take the time to focus on your bond with your pet. Human or animal, loss affects us all, but we cope best when we care for each other.

2. All cats hate water Most domestic moggies are not big fans of water, but anyone who’s ever Googled cat videos will know that not all of them hate getting wet. Scientists think the reason most cats hate water could be because cats’ coats don’t dry very quickly, which can leave them feeling pretty uncomfortable and possibly cold. The weight of the water is also likely to weigh the usually-agile animal down, which means they can’t escape perceived danger as quickly. Another reason is that cats’ original descendants evolved in desert areas,

where the land is baron and has very little rain, if any at all. Some people spray water at cats in an attempt to get them to stop doing something. Imagine how you’d feel if someone suddenly sprayed water in your face and you should begin to understand why cats don’t like it. If you do need to bathe your cat for medical reasons, use a little bit of positive encouragement such as a favourite treat while gently introducing them to the water. 3. Will rubbing butter on a cat’s paws help it find its way home? Rubbing butter on cats’ paws is often given as advice when someone moves house and is letting their moggy outside for the first time – but this is entirely untrue and can cause more stress for your cat. The theory behind this myth is that it removes the smell of the feline’s old environment and allows the cat to take in its new home and get a bearing of its territory when licking off the butter. But, in reality, the smell will remain on the rest of the cat and it’s unlikely they’ll be taking in any new scents at all if it’s concentrating on licking off the butter. Instead, it could potentially make your cat even more stressed, as well as leaving greasy paw prints all over your new home. A much better way of familiarising your cat with its new home and making sure it returns, is to keep it indoors for two weeks so it knows that the new house is safe. It’s also a good idea to start letting your cat out before feeding time and going out with them - and avoiding doing this at night. Also make sure your pet is microchipped so even if it does get lost, there’s a high chance of you being reunited with it.

Clear out: Before a reorganisation can begin, start by completely emptying the contents of your shed onto the lawn

or patio outside. This will allow you to reassess the size of the space you have to work with, and find forgotten items 2. Start from scratch: Thoroughly sort through the contents of the shed, placing everything into groups such as tools, pots and planters, seeds and so on. Get rid of any duplicates and decide which items in each group are used more than others. 3. A place for everything: Keep each shelf well organised

Magnetic magic: For small and lightweight metal tools, why not hang a magnetic kitchen knife strip on the wall to store things like screwdrivers, pliers and scissors? This simple solution means you can easily find what you need without rummaging through drawers or boxes, and it keeps sharp blades away from surfaces. 7. Get creative: Make your own garden twine dispenser by punching a hole through the lid of a jam jar, placing a ball of twine inside and then pulling it out through the hole to stop it from tangling up. 8. Bright idea: Make sure your shed has a form of lighting for when you’re working into the evenings as the nights draw in. Solar-powered lights are an eco-friendly option or keep a battery-powered lantern or torch inside for emergencies.

Ford keeping mum about 2018 Kuga THE KUGA is one of Ford’s best-selling models. The car is available in Europe as well as in the US under a different name. The ongoing generation has been around since 2012. However, this is actually a heavy update of the first generation which was released back in 2008. Since then it didn’t change as much as it should have. During the updates, the Kuga became a rather dull crossover which is a heavy contrast in comparison to the first model that was one of the best-driving crossovers around. For the upcoming 2018 Ford Kuga it seems that things could change for the better once again. So far Ford hasn’t released any official details about it. Despite that, industry experts, as well as inside sources, did say a few things about it. For starters, the new model could be based on the same platform as the Fusion or at least an evolution of it. The same chassis will also underpin the new Focus. Thanks to it, the new Kuga’s weight is set to decrease; its structural rigidity will be greatly improved while the space inside the cabin should increase.

The 2018 Ford Kuga is definitely going to share its design scheme with the revamped Edge, although its trademark massive windshield, as well as the hatchback-like roofline, are most likely going to stay though. The base engine is likely going to be a 1.5 litre EcoBoost. Even though it will share its displacement with the older generation, it won’t have much in common. In fact, this

engine would be Ford’s new 3 cylinder turbo which is capable of anything between 150 to 200 horsepower and north of 200 lb-ft of torque. This will be able to offer better fuel consumption than the old 6-speed gearbox as well as better performance thanks to its closer spaced gears.
