The 900 number will “allow citizens to get in direct contact with the council,” and will be operational 12 hours a day from October onwards. Councillor Carmona explained, “we want to know how to act in every situation and for that we need to know how many cases we have in Mijas, and thus improve.” The council points out most victims of hate crimes do not report the offence for fear the police will not help. It explained it hopes the course will allow this perception to change.

17 homes for the most vulnerable by Jemima Roberts FUENGIROLA COUNCIL has begun building a €1 million apartment block to house those in need. The 445.32 square metre building, located between Calles Salvador Rodriguez Navas and Arapiles, will also have an underground car park. One of the properties will also include nine bedrooms and will offer assistance. The town’s Mayor, Ana Mula, visited the site together with the Councillor for Town Planning, Maria Hernandez, and revealed the project will be completed in January 2018. Mayor Mula explained, "we put together a tender for the works, receiving offers from quite a few companies. It was awarded to company Easy 2000.” She added, “they are ambitious works because it is creating a social housing building, in the heart of the city and at an unbeatable place.” The building, which stands on the site of former accommodation for teachers next to Sohail School, covers five floors and a basement. The works began at the beginning of this year, although the school holidays were used to carry out the demolition of the previous building so

the school was not affected. According to Maria Hernandez, "when we started the works we found layers of cemented sandstone, which could not be drilled…so we decided to get rid of one of the parking floors for the safety of the adjoining properties which are very old since we did not know the exact condition of the building or its foundations.” Commenting on the project, Mayor Mula explained, "we believe that there is a sector of the population we need to reach: people living alone, who have no family, have no resources or have insufficient money to rent… and that is why we planned this initiative, where around a dozen people could live together using private spaces and common areas, such as a kitchen or a dining room, with a minimum economic contribution” She concluded, "the rest will be housing for families with special situations.” Mayor Mula explained there had been a slight delay to works so far, saying “I have strongly urged the company that they must undertake the remaining work with much more agility and speed, using extraordinary measures."

Barcelona was the heart of the Republican movement during the Civil War and Cataluña had various degrees of autonomy over the past several hundred years as well as periods of conquest and loss of status. Once again, the country is split by ideological differences and even in Cataluña, there is no guarantee that if the independence referendum actually goes ahead that there will be an enormous turnout or that those wishing for independence from Spain will be successful. Reports are now being received that whilst the Spanish government is able to have referendum websites taken down anywhere in the European Union, Russian hackers have stepped in to provide links to the banned website. Despite everything that the government has done to enforce what it considers the rule of law, the situation will only become clearer on Sunday when either a large number of people turn out to vote or it becomes something of a damp squib with the government managing to shut down polling stations. One thing is however certain and that is that a schism has opened up within Spain which will be difficult if not impossible to heal in the foreseeable future.

The positive results this year have encouraged the company to station three ships at the port in 2018, with an aim of carrying 92,000 passengers.

by Michael Cano MARBELLA CITY COUNCIL held a meeting in Malaga with the Eastern Andalucia State Road Department to put forward new plans. The mayor, Angeles Muñoz, along with the deputy mayor of San Pedro Alcantara and the councillor for public works, Javier Garcia, met with the head of the highway unit to discuss plans such as creating a third lane on the road between San Pedro and Puerto Banus and new access to the A7 road from Las Chapas. Mr Garcia said afterwards that the meeting was “very helpful” and that significant progress had been made to advance the A7 access project, which is now just waiting for approval from Madrid before work can officially begin. The council have also been given permission to start the necessary studies needed for the San Pedro road extension - which citizens requested in order to ease traffic jams in the area. The meeting also discussed improvements that could be made to increase pedestrian safety and general road conditions.

Significant progress made towards advancing A7 access projects

A COURT in Fuengirola has dropped a case against a firefighter accused of not performing overtime work he had been paid for. A spokeswoman for the council, Ana Mata, made the announcement about the case which came to light almost a year ago. She explained the investigations into mayor Rodrigo Romero and the former head of a fire station had now been dropped, after it was found no criminal wrongdoing had taken place. The case comes after a series of firefighter strikes in Malaga, with the city council now agreeing to new work conditions. The council has said it is prepared to negotiate with the fire men to redraft a document regulating fire workers’ conditions, dating from 1959. The document will see issues including training, shifts and fire stations renegotiated. The strike had been ongoing in the province for nine months, leading to a potential criminal case for 60 firefighters who ignored calls to attend five blazes in one day. The Malaga prosecutor’s office has referred

the matter to a judge who will now decide whether the workers are guilty of abandoning their office, a matter punishable by up to two years’ suspension from work and fines. According to reports, on June 27 five fires broke out simultaneously around the province. Sixty-one firemen were all called and asked to come to work but only one turned up. Twelve said they could not because of child care or doctor’s appointments, three said they were out of the area, one refused to go, two were on leave and the other 42 did not pick up their phones or return the call. In the end, Provincial firefighters and Infoca workers were left to tackle the blazes in La Corta, Campanillas, Asperones, Monte Dorado and Atabal. A court will now decide whether the men broke the “minimum services” conditions of their strike terms, in which, “in the event of an extraordinary situation (fire in buildings, activation of the Emergency Plan or any other incident), it may be necessary to take up the necessary personnel reinforcements to deal with such situation.”

Into the fold by Pippa Harris MIJAS COUNCIL is undertaking a survey of the surrounding 200 urbanisations to see whether they can be included in the municipality. The audit, which is the first of its kind for 40 years, comes after residents of satellite urbanisations have asked to be given the same rights as those who officially live in the Mijas municipality. The town’s Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, explained the €97,000 contract for carrying out the work had been awarded to companies Cemosa and Ingenia, commenting, “our commitment has always been firm. This is something which has been demanded for a long time and now we are carrying out a study which will tell us

more about each of these areas and allow us to act accordingly.” The so called “Municipal reception plan for urbanisation” has been divided into three sections to allow the work to be undertaken as quickly as possible and therefore free up council funding for any subsequent works. Jose Carlos Martin, Councillor for Infrastructure, explained, “The award of the audit is a saving of 50 per cent with respect to its bid price. From now on the companies have three months to carry out the study where they will have to evaluate the state of the infrastructures in addition to which they have to execute and this division makes the process faster so that by the end of December we will have the real diagnosis of how the Mijeñas urban-

THE CASE against a Guardia Civil officer facing prison over two alleged road safety offences has been suspended after it emerged the man was already in prison. The officer, who was accused of causing an accident after drink driving in Torremolinos in May this year, has been in prison for causing a fatal collision since June. The trial for the officer’s latest alleged offences will now recommence on June 1 2018 when the man can be transferred from prison to court. In his latest trial, the Guardia Civil officer was accused of causing an accident on May 26 this year on the road between Alhaurin el Grande to Fuengirola in which three people were injured. The prosecution are seeking a year and a half in prison, as well as an eight year driving ban and compensation to the man’s victims. They allege the officer had “previ-

ously ingested such amount of alcoholic beverages that he was incapacitated for the complete mastery of your vehicle. Thus, it is indicated that the accused was circulating “at an excessive speed and higher than it should be”, citing this for the reason he collided with a car and a moped. The prosecution added the man was “aware of the protocols and how to act in case of an accident”, because he was a police officer but instead “he decides to leave without further ado, avoiding and therefore refusing to undergo alcohol tests”. According to police, the man seemed drunk. The same officer, known only as Sergeant Miguel, was tried in June for killing three and injuring seven in a car accident, facing four and a half years in prison. The officer, who was previously the subject of six internal police investigations, and who was fined €650 in 2015 for threatening his neighbour, claimed he was driving at a normal speed. Sergeant Miguel was also accused of trying to flee the scene of the accident, hurdling the central reservation and escaping into a pine forest. Elderly man injured

AFTER being closed for reconstruction for nearly a year, Calle Andalucia in San Pedro Alcantara has been reopened and has already claimed its first elderly victim. The manhole covers on the pavement are not flush, being about two centimetres above ground and an elderly man tripped over one of the covers and was so badly hurt that emergency services were called out to try to stem the flow of blood and take him for treatment. A complaint has now been made to the local council but the danger still remains and all walking in the area should be aware of the potential hazard.

€460,000 road works continue

WORKS to build a second ring road in La Lobilla are at the half way stage. The project will include the creation of two green spaces measuring more than 9,000 metres, as well as installing a road, paving signage and street furniture. Estepona council hopes the works will help to alleviate traffic problems in the town. The investment will not incur any expense for the council as the project is being entirely financed by bank guarantees from construction companies which did not comply with their contractual obligations when building in the town originally. New legislation requires developers to deposit guarantees with banks before projects are started and the town hall checks the work before returning the money. These most recent works have been pending since 2008 due to a “failure on the part of the promoter who built the housing development,” according to Estepona Council. The town hall started claiming back the fee paid in 2012 in a “long administrative procedure.” The money claimed back will now fund more than €4 million worth of works.

There was confusion amongst all as Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy attended a joint press conference with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday afternoon. President Trump spent the entire conference referring to Rajoy as "president of Spain" instead of "prime minister." Despite hearing others refer to him as prime minister — President Trump even addressed him as "Mr. President" at one point. The White House also referred to Rajoy as president in an official tweet announcing the press conference, which further emphasised the incorrect title. The Prime Minister’s visit to the U.S. has attracted media criticism given its timing with the Catalonia secession vote. The regional government in Catalonia is holding a binding referendum on Sunday to separate from Spain. But the Spanish government insists such a vote is illegal and promises it won't take place.

A TOTAL of 16 people have drowned in Malaga province so far this year, according to a report by the Royal Spanish Federation of Rescue and Lifesaving (RFESS). Half of these deaths occurred on unmanned beaches, while another four bodies were found in ports and the rest were discovered in rivers and swimming pools. These figures make the province the second highest for recorded drowning in Andalusia, only beaten by Cadiz who have had 20 deaths. It is also the eleventh highest in Spain. The figure is fast approaching last year’s tally of 17 deaths, with three months of the year still to go. According to RFESS spokesperson, Carlos Porro, all these deaths occurred in areas without supervision so one of the biggest causes was recklessness on the part of individuals. This irresponsibility has been largely debated in towns across the province, with many considering imposing penalties on those who commit dangerous acts that endanger their lives or those who rescue them. The towns of Estepona and Benalmadena already have fines in place to punish those who ignore warnings against bathing in dangerous areas. Teresa Porras, the Councillor for Operational Services, Beaches and Festivities in Malaga, has reserves about putting these punishments in measure as the implementation would be “complicated” and would require increasing the presence of local police at beaches, which would be a costly endeavour. Porras went on to state that it is more effective to run awareness campaigns to prevent these incidences in the first place.

demanding the current hiring system be suspended, claiming selection committees are made up of friends of certain applicants. The town hall, however, claim the irregularity was down to “human error,” saying the teacher had been at the school last year and “the names of teachers from last year were copied and pasted.” The council has not revealed whether the hiring process will be suspended or cancelled. The controversy comes af-

ter it emerged a music teacher who allegedly sexually assaulted an 8-year-old pupil could still be teaching. According to media reports, the 35-year-old man, who was arrested on September 4 in Fuengirola, could have been transferred to another school after his suspension. National Police are now analysing the man’s mobile phone and computer after the girl’s mother claimed he touched her daughter when alone in a classroom togeth-

er one day, before showing her pornographic videos and threatening to kill her if she told anyone. A psychologist was brought in to listen to the girl and believed her story, leading to the man’s arrest. The teacher denies the allegations and was released on bail with an order preventing him from contacting the girl. The National Police’s Family and Woman Unit are keeping their investigation open in case any further children come forward.

Labour market boost Green growth by Jemima Roberts

MIJAS COUNCIL continues its quest to help the long-term unemployed by offering a training course on warehouse work. The 70-hour course, which will take place in the Department for Social Services, is aimed at those who have been unemployed for some time or come from families in which all members are unemployed. Mari Carmen Carmona, Councillor for Social Services, explained, “we have big companies that want to bet on Mijas and that they are seeing a bit of a rebound in economic activity. In addition, they demand a lot of this type of training due to the shortage of people with specialties in handling machinery in warehouses or with paperwork skills, among other skills, so we want to offer this type of courses so that residents have a greater opportunity in the labour market.” During the theoretical sessions, attendees will be taught about dealing with paperwork, personnel management and operating equipment. Councillor Carmona explained, “it is noteworthy that in Mijas we have large and powerful companies such as Carrefour, AKI or Corte Ingles, who always collaborate with us in these schemes, as well as many others who want to join our training programs, and we have to take advantage of support they give us.” Mijas Council recently announced it

Juan Carlos Maldonado, Mijas’ Mayor explained, “this council team has managed to instil confidence in British buyers to come and spend their money in our municipality.” He added the first €10 million has already hit Mijas, explaining, “the number of licences for building work in Mijas is growing and this real estate development reveals the confidence the town generates.” Mijas is also attracting substan-

tial investment in its hotel industry. Juan Carlos Maldonado recently announced the council has approved a building permit to refurbish luxury hotel, Byblos, with works beginning after the summer. Maldonado commented, “the deadlines are being met and, if everything continues to go to plan, once the summer season ends, this tourist attraction will have a green light to start refurbishments.” He added, “Byblos is a year-round quality attraction which draws in crowds in the golfing sector and most importantly boosts our town’s economy and generates employment.”

OPPORTUNITIES for employment, greater tourism prospects and environmental improvement have been hailed. Irene Garcia, president of the Provincial Council of Andalucia, has praised the expansion of Los Alcornocales Natural Park, highlighting it as an area for growth in the region. She has rejoiced in that fact that more than 5,800 hectares of extra space that will be added and emphasised the positive impact that this move will have on

future generations. This measure protects an important ecological corridor that joins the forests of the park with the Mediterranean coast and adds to the network of protected natural spaces that already exist in the area. Also pointed out was a study which revealed that municipalities with protected areas have a higher wealth and a rise in their income per capita compared to other rural areas without such spaces.

First aid campaign A CAMPAIGN, “put your health in order, order your medicines,” has been launched in Mijas. The initiative launched by the Malaga Pharmacists Association, aims to teach about storing medicines at home. The Councillor for Health, Mara del Carmen Gonzalez, alongside Francisco Criado, member of the Illustrious Association of Pharmacists of Malaga, launched the campaign, which will visit the municipality on Tuesday October 3. According to reports from the College of Pharmacists, currently 20 per cent of medicines stored in homes in Malaga province are expired, leading the body to warn of the need to update first aid kits in the home. The campaign was launched to coincide with the week in which World Pharmacists Day is launched. As explained by the Councillor for Health “this campaign will give us the guidelines to look after medicine cabinets at home and to better understand what conditions drugs should be stored in.” The council has placed special emphasis on teaching the elderly, explaining, “despite the fact that the campaign is addressed to the entire population if it is true that this is a population group that usually

take more medicine,” adding, “we invite you to come along next Tuesday.” The initiative will be put in place in 680 pharmacies in the province and an information tent will be in place in Mijas on October 3, while on October 4 it will go to Antequera and on October 5 will be in Ronda. A TEENAGE girl suffering from a rare skin disease has shown signs of improvement. As previously reported in Euro Weekly News issue 1680, Shalini Yadav, 16, has erythroderma, an inflammatory skin disease also known as red man syndrome, which causes her to shed her skin every two months. After reading about her condition, Spanish journalist Paco Rego helped the young Hindu receive treatment from some of the best specialists at the International Medical Academy of Marbella. As a result of the treatment, Shalini has gained weight and grown in height as well as experiencing improved motor abilities. She has now returned to India where her treatment will continue at home. Shalini is given a daily bath of water and oats before the application of a number of different treatment creams, a treatment which has had a significant impact on her condition and given her a longer life expectancy according to Spanish media sources. In Malaga, she has learned to use a computer, play chess and handle a mobile phone. She wants to study medicine to be able to provide others with similar help to that which she has received.

MIJAS COUNCIL has extended the deadline to register in their employment programme for the over-40s. Laura Moreno, Councillor for Employment, explained the scheme helps the longterm unemployed back into work. She said, “After analysing the unemployment figures of the municipality and the employment plans that were already being developed, we saw the need to implement specific plans for unemployed people over 40.” The programme will cover CV updating and active job searching and will include individual sessions and personalised attention. Councillor Moreno explained, “individualised

attention is one of the highlights of this programme which can take a total of 10 unemployed people from Mijas, where they will be able to gain tools for an actively looking for employment and improving their confidence in job interviews.” Mr Moreno said the council wants to “make a special appeal to unemployed women over 40 to encourage them to come by the employment agencies where we can advise and inform them of all the courses and workshops at their disposal.” Applications can be made at the offices of Employment or by email at promo.desa@mijas.es.

Innovative New Year Celebrations PERHAPS a little earlier than might have been expected, the San Pedro Alcantara council has announced its plans for New Year’s Eve. There will be three separate areas devoted to different types of music including live performances from artists to be announced in due course as well as an area containing a range of food trucks. This is the first time that a municipal party of this type will have been held in the area and it is seen as a pioneering concept produced by the council in cooperation with event-company Conciertos y Eventos de Malaga. According to the Councillor for Youth, Gema Midón this is an exciting experiment which will provide 60 jobs

for local residents and local companies will wherever possible be employed to work on a range of different tasks. There will also be an indirect spin off for local commerce as visitors are likely to spend money in bars and restaurants before the fun starts. Admission is reserved for those aged 18 or above with a free bar and at least 12 live performances. A special parking area will be established and busses from a number of different points will be laid on. Tickets initially costing €35 (although this will increase nearer to the date) will be available through post offices in the area and El Corte Ingles from next Monday and it will also be possible to purchase VIP and reserved tables. by Pippa Harris MORE THAN 5,000 young people got involved in events organised by Mijas Council in July and August. Among this year’s new initiative, were zombie survival classes and a cabaret circus, which attracted large numbers of users according to the council. Tamara Vera, Councillor for Youth, explained, “we are very pleased with the uptake of the activities promoted by the department and have managed to bring together about 5,000 people.” She added, “the return of the summer cinema screenings for all ages and the youth information point on La Cala beach were initiatives young people and their families had asked for.” More than 2,500 people took part in healthy sporting activities, including free sand and water sports and environmental care activities on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in July and August. Around 700 people attended free moving screenings. A cabaret circus act toured three areas of the municipality as well over the summer and “received a great reception,” according to the council. Tamara Ver explained, “these new activities were in addition to more traditional ones such as the popular games which we offered once again this summer or the visits to Gamepolis and exchanges with young people in other municipalities like Nerja.”

FUENGIROLA is preparing to host the VII Manuel Fernandez Memorial indoor football cup tomorrow (Saturday) at the Elola complex. The event, which takes place from 5pm to 8m, will see different age groups battle it out to be winner. Councillor for Sports, Pedro Cuevas, accompanied by the secretary of the Peña Futbol Sala, Los Boliches, Jose Martinez Ramos, said, “thanks to Peña Futbol Sala in Los Boliches, we commemorate a person who was quite important for the Peña Fútbol Sala and for Los Boliches, Manuel Fernandez.” He added, “this is the seventh memorial game organised by the Peña Futbol Sala, Fuengirola football teams and the Depart-

ment of Sports, and this time it will be dedicated to younger players.” He explained, “this year we will have as special guest the Club Larita Futbol Sala from Malaga.” Jose Martinez added he was “proud to be able to celebrate the seventh anniversary of this tournament in memory of Manuel Fernandez, who was a great person and was very supportive of the Peña Indoor football club.” Martinez thanked “the town of Fuengirola, the Department of Sports and in particular Pedro Cuevas, as well as the Federation of Peñas for their collaboration,” adding, “I want to invite all sports fans to come along this Saturday from 5pm to enjoy great matches.”

Bitcoin available to buy at Carrefour

On September 20 the Spanish bitcoin payment platform, Bitnovo, announced residents from Spain can now purchase redeemable bitcoin cards at fifty Carrefour retail stores located across the country. Bitcoin is a form of digital currency, created and held electronically. No one controls it. Bitcoins aren’t printed, like dollars or euros – they’re produced by people, and increasingly businesses, running computers all around the world, using software that solves mathematical problems. It’s the first example of a growing category of money known as cryptocurrency. Start-up Bitnovo is continuing to expand throughout Spain, launching pre-loaded bitcoin cards that can be purchased at over fifty of the well-known Carrefour shops located in the country. Spain is Carrefour’s second most popular market next to France, with the company currently operating in more than 30 countries worldwide. The Carrefour redeemable bitcoin card sales are part of Bitnovo’s launch of over 4,000 new physical locations throughout Spain and the startup’s Visa brand bitcoin debit card. “With our eagerness to continue bolstering cryptocurrency to all the corners of the planet we have launched a new product,” announced Bitnovo. The Bitnovo redeemable bitcoin cards are available for purchase at the store’s gift card rack alongside restaurant coupons, iTunes cards and other retail store vouchers.

The company says customers can buy the bitcoin cards with cash or credit card and without registration. To purchase a Bitnovo loaded bitcoin card, Spanish residents can go to one of the fifty partnering locations and select a card with the desired amount of funds. The company says the bitcoin cards can be redeemed instantly into any BTC-based wallet. In two steps, the user enters the PIN tethered to the purchased card alongside entering a forwarding bitcoin address. “The gift card format is ideal to give as a gift and to initiate your relatives or friends into the exciting world of cryptocurrency,” Bitnovo said. “With our cards, you do not have to keep bitcoin with us; you can store it in your favourite wallet and just convert the bitcoin when necessary. It’s a very quick process, with no logins or registrations, as simple as it gets.”

by Michael Cano FIFTEEN years ago, Alan Howard Green came over to Estepona to spend two months making a bit of money hustling golfers before moving to Malaysia as a director of golf. He is still here and rather than play golf professionally, he now has become a professional golf trader and the money he makes from that helps to top up the pension of this engaging and cheerful 71-year-old. Every week, there is a televised golf tournament somewhere in the world which normally runs from Thursday to Sunday and this has been Alan’s bread and butter as he studies the course, the statistics and watches the players to spot those who are below par or nervous and he then decides by the last day, who is most likely to win. He doesn’t get involved if a player is miles ahead of the competition as the odds are then so bad that there is no money to be made

but if things are close, 90 per cent or more of the time, he can forecast who will win or even accept wagers from other traders if he thinks that a player is going to lose. Having been involved with golf as a very successful amateur and then a professional, he has a very good grasp of the game and although he doesn’t invest large amounts of money in the trading, he invariably ends up ahead after each tournament. For the first time in many years, he actually attended a tournament taking a very close friend and now publisher of his new book from Poland to see his first ever tournament, the Ladies Costa del Sol Open at the Real Club de Golf in Guadalmina. Having led a very colourful life, he has amused friends and acquaintances with his anecdotes and it has often been suggested that he should write a book so when his friend Andrzej Jacaszek told him to do exactly that, he agreed but explained that he couldn’t afford to

publish it. Andrzej just happens to own the Ican Institute in Warsaw which publishes the Harvard Business Review in Poland, so Alan had no option but to sit down and write the book as he now had a publisher ready to go. After two years, and 75,000 words If you haven’t gambled (You haven’t lived) has been released and in Alan’s own words “ It takes you on a journey of non-stop hustling, gambling, horses, casinos, sex, criminal activity and also the peaceful path of the world’s fairways.” Although it is partly based on his experiences over the years, Alan has produced a novel which combines reality with his own wicked creative streak. Now available on Amazon to download and in paper form, it has already received a number of good reviews and it has been decided by the author and publisher that any profits will be collected and given to a charity for underprivileged children.

There is only one thing worse than the embarrassment of wet behind the ears adolescents sorting out problems with my computer. It’s when blokes my own age are able to sort out problems with my computer. The generation gap was always a reliable excuse for not being au fait with the latest technology, but the fact of the matter is, I have always been sadly deficient in the understanding of anything remotely mechanical or electrical. My mind is as blank as a nun’s diary when it comes to such things and I am not only a fish out of water, but one that is already gutted and fried. I have only just got to grips with the toaster. Talking to an acquaintance recently about ‘the good old days’, it became apparent that whilst I was a Mod - they of the Beatles haircuts and Carnaby Street persuasion - he had been a Rocker and a member of the Brylcreem and leather brigade. One of the younger ladies present asked what the difference was between the two. My friend offered the view that all Mods were big girls blouses (appropriate laughter) whilst I informed her that unlike Rockers, the Mods did wash (more tittering). The other major difference we pointed out, was the mode of transport. Whilst Mods were buzzing about on their Lambretta and Vespa hairdryers, the Rockers thundered around on their prized Norton and Triumph death machines. Apart from the attraction of funky clothes and haircuts, there was of course the music, but I have to confess that secretly, I used to drool over the shiny super bikes in the motor cycle showrooms.

My brother-i- law owned a BSA Rocket Gold Star, truly a thing of beauty, and I longed to be able to do my Easy Rider thing and roar off with a raven haired woman on the pillion seat, moulding her luscious body into mine as we left lesser machines in our wake. So what was the problem? Well firstly there was no way I could afford such a machine. Secondly I didn’t know any raven haired women with luscious bodies, and thirdly, whilst we Mods would simply lock up our scooters for the night after a day’s posing, Rockers would be up to their elbows in oil and mysterious metal bits; stripping down and rebuilding the damn things on an on-going basis. And that, as I have already explained, was completely beyond my understanding.

Believed to be the greatest love story ever told was the mythical one of Romeo and Juliet, however now there is another one that has unfolded, that could have been made in the heavens? This was between a man called Giovanni Cassini and Linda Spilker, although they had never met. The reason for this is because, astronomer Giovanni Cassini lived in the 17th/18th century, and Linda Spilker is a woman of today, in her late forties/early fifties. After spending 29 years as the chief scientist on the Cassini project, Linda kept watch over the Saturn explorer. Nicknamed the “Voyager Mum,” a few tears probably trickled down her cheeks as she watched as Cassini, a billion miles from home, running low on fuel, and almost out of time. After 13 years traversing the Saturn system, the spacecraft Cassini plunged to a fiery death, becoming part of the very planet it has been exploring and in a ball of fire disappeared towards the surface of Saturn with the words a “goodbye kiss” from Linda Spilker. After 13 years producing extraordinary discoveries.

Cassini had travelled 7.9 billion kilometres mostly at 123,607 kph. The incredible journey lasted 19 years, 11 months and 15 days at a cost of £2.5 billion. Was it worth it? The Costa del Sol Adventures Costa found the building called Michelangelo easily enough but the entrance gates were all locked. It was siesta time, hot and hazy, and Costa decided there was nothing for it but a cold beer. Between the block and the noisy beach was a fairground, covered up and shabby. Costa sat on the edge of the dodgem track, sipped and stared. One day he would write his memoirs. Tell the truth about Alicante´s Battle of the Espetos, or what really happened with the rasta weavers in Torremolinos. And then he saw him. All in black, crash helmet on, visor down. It was the limp and the mountain dust on his leather trousers that told Costa everything he needed to know. Draining the beer, Costa saddled up and cruised out of the gravel car park, joining the traffic three cars back from his mark, also on a bike. They drove away from the beach. Costa didn´t know the town well and wasn´t sure where they were until he read what was written on the archway the man had vanished through. Cementario. Small, walled in. Costa grabbed the first flowers he saw and followed. The man in black stopped in front of a four-level tomb and took off his crash helmet, revealing one of the most fascinating women Costa had seen in his life. As she shook out her long hair Costa caught the glint of a ring before a great hulk materialised and got the woman in a hold. The pair disappeared behind the grey tomb wall. When Costa came to where the woman had been standing he saw the marks of her heels in the dust. On the ledge in front of a grave marked Pedro Ramirez he saw a diamond ring. The woman or the ring? Costa made his choice.

Alarm bells jangled when my mate Alan, over a pint at Ye Olde Spotted Dick, told me that he planned to pack in his job and become a holiday rep on the Costa Blanca. “Is that wise?” I asked. And I told him that I had met a number of people who had become reps and ended up needing therapy. They developed nervous tics, migraines, uncontrollable rages, agoraphobia and addictions to tranquillisers, anti-depressants and alcohol. When Alan insisted that he was bored to death with his accountancy job and needed something more challenging, I suggested he become a lion tamer, a professional javelincatcher,or learn to be a bomb-disposal operative. But Alan was determined. “What could possibly go wrong?” he asked. I saw him again a year later after he had been discharged from St Tabitha’s Retreat for the Terribly Traumatised. He was still heavily sedated, and only began to talk of how he wound up there after his sixth cup of strong coffee and a couple of strong tablets. “I couldn’t handle the stupid questions,” he croaked, and began trotting out examples: • Does Benidorm have a beach? • Is Benidorm an island? • Is the big rock I can see from my Benidorm hotel balcony Ibiza? • Why is the solarium so hot? • Why are there so many Spanish people in the hotel? • Where can I find the third floor” (To this he replied “get in a lift and press the button between two and four” – and got

a funny look for his helpful answer.) Then there were the endless complaints, most frequent being that the food in the hotels was “rubbish”. Asked to elaborate, guests would explain that “it’s not what we are used to back home.” Apparently Spanish chicken nuggets are far inferior to the UK variety of this nourishing delicacy. But what finally sent him off the rails was the realisation British holidaymakers, unlike their Dutch, German or Scandinavian counterparts, don’t actually come to Spain to enjoy themselves. Heavens to Betsy, no! They come to find fault, and will spend endless hours researching ways of squeezing compensation out of holiday companies for imagined service failures, or for more serious issues, like food poisoning. He frequently had to deal with people who claimed that food served in their hotels had made them ill, and directed me to a recent report that a Liverpool family – Paul Roberts, his partner Deborah Briton and her daughter Charlene Briton – are to face trial next year for claiming damages totalling £51,000 from Thomas Cook. They falsely alleged that they had suffered food poisoning during three separate holidays in Majorca. Following the arrest of the family, the Daily Mail reported in July this year that over 1,000 food poisoning complaints were dropped after Spanish officials launched a crackdown on fraudulent claims made by British all-inclusive holidaymakers. “A staggering 1,800 complaints had been

At the end of the last article I gave you a short paragraph to translate. I have to admit the contents are a bit weird but it does give us examples of almost all the adjective forms we were talking about. Here it is again, with my translation below. Notice there is often more than one way to translate something, so I’ve given you some alternatives in brackets. Los dos hijos, el guapo y el feo, van a visitar a su familia este verano. Lo triste es que el guapo es más popular que el feo, aunque el feo es mucho más simpático, y es el más generoso de toda la familia. Lo más curioso de todo es que el guapo tiene muchos más amigos que el feo, pero el feo es el más feliz. The two sons, (or both sons), the handsome one and the ugly one, are going to visit their family this summer. The sad thing is that the handsome one is more

popular than the ugly one, although the ugly one is much nicer, and is the most generous one (or member) of the whole family. The strangest (or most curious) thing of all is that the handsome one has a lot more friends (or many more friends) than the ugly one, but the ugly one is the happier (of the two). And now for something completely different! We looked briefly at the word “lo” last week and saw that it can mean “the”. However “lo” is really quite a pesky word with all sorts of meanings depending on how it’s used. Today we’re going to look at it and what it means when it’s tacked onto the end of a verb. First of all we have to think back a few lessons to when we were looking at verbs in their “infinitive” forms. For example, we had sentences like quiero beber (I want to drink) or necesito limpiar (I need to clean) and puedo ver (I can

see). We saw that quiero, necesito and puedo were verbs in a particular form expressing “I”, or the “first person”, and that beber, limpiar and ver are what we call infinitive forms of verbs. We then saw that we can add other words to these sentences. For example quiero beber el café, (I want to drink the coffee); necesito limpiar el coche, (I need to clean the car); puedo ver el edificio (I can see the building). In grammar terms, the words café, coche and edificio used in this way are called “objects” because they receive the action of the verb. Now as you listen and look around you, you may have come across words from time to time like this: beberlo, limpiarlo, verlo. Well, these words are compounds – they consist of verbs in the infinitive form and the word lo, which here means “it”. We can now see that quiero beberlo

means “I want to drink it”; necesito limpiarlo means “I need to clean it” and puedo verlo means “I can see it”. In other words, lo is replacing the objects (coffee, car and building) in receiving the action of the verb. As I said at the beginning, this is only one use of “lo”. There are also occasions similar to those above where it can mean “him”. In grammar terms though, this would still be referred to as the “direct object pronoun”. One last comment about compound words like “beberlo”, is that you will not find them in the dictionary! That is why we need to have some understanding of the way words can be transformed so that we can then understand which basic forms we can find in the dictionary and which altered forms we can’t! Music, Arts and Food Festival By Michael Cano LA CALA DE MIJAS will welcome the Salida del Sol II Festival which will run from next Monday for seven nights at the Avanto Beach Restaurant. This promises to be a celebration of music, arts and food with the added bonus of direct contact with the musicians and artists whose work will be on display. The festival will consist of seven concerts over seven nights with renowned international musicians coming from across the globe. The Costa del Sols finest local acts will be joined by a gallery of visual and performing artists from around the world in a cauldron of creativity. The art event is open from 10am to 6pm and is free of charge with a number of the artists being present in order to talk about their passion, techniques and drives. Each night will herald a different concept, exploring both

the traditional and contemporary through audible and visual artistry, and a uniquely designed tapas menu will complement the evening.

Organised by Project Music Management, a percentage of every ticket sold will be donated to the CUDECA Hospices.

TIMS Choir announces schedule for October THE FUENGIROLA-BASED TIMS Choir has announced its October schedule. The International Music Society, known as T.I.M.S., which has an extensive repertoire covering a wide range of music, are performing on Sunday October 8 at the Salida del Sol Festival in La Cala de Mijas. The event, titled the Last Night Mini Prom, will cost €35 entry, and food and wine will be included in the price.

The four-part harmony choir has been singing on the Costa del since it was formed in 1988. The group is always looking for new members, especially male voices, despite a recent recruitment drive resulting in three new female members. The choir is also interested in hearing from anyone who can play the piano. T.I.M.S Choir is already rehearsing for their Christmas carol concert on

December 12 at La Cala de Mijas Ayuntamiento. This year marks a special milestone for the choir who will have performed for Mijas Ayuntamiento for more than 15 years. Make your mascara last If your mascara tube has become dry or clumpy, there's no reason to throw it out. Add some eye drops and it will be as good as new. Eye drops are a better idea than water because water can cause your mascara to flake or smudge and won't work at all if it's a waterproof mascara. We’ve had quite a few questions on the topic as a result, so we wanted to make this the topic of this week’s column. COMMON CONDITION: Sufferers ache all over

When Lady Gaga announced on Twitter that she suffers from fibromyalgia, she was met with an abundance of well wishes. Not only did fans feel for the ‘Poker Face’ star, they could relate — many gushed with gratitude that Lady Gaga stepped up to raise awareness for a disease that is all too often misunderstood, misdiagnosed or just missed altogether. Fibromyalgia is the second most common condition affecting your bones and muscles. Its classic symptoms are widespread muscle and joint pain and fatigue. There's no cure. But a combination of medication, exercise, managing your stress and healthy habits may ease your symptoms enough that you can live a normal, active life. Causes Doctors aren't sure what causes it, but some think it's a problem with how your brain and spinal cord process pain signals from your nerves. We do know certain things suggest

you're more likely to get it: You're a woman You have another painful disease, such as arthritis, or an infection You have a mood disorder, like anxiety or depression You were physically or emotionally abused or have PTSD You rarely exercise Other family members have it Symptoms Simply put, you ache all over. Common symptoms include: Muscle pain, burning, twitching, or tightness Low pain threshold or tender points Draining fatigue Trouble concentrating and remembering, called "fibro fog" Insomnia or not sleeping well Feeling nervous, worried, or depressed Fibromyalgia can feel similar to osteoarthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis. But rather than hurting in a specific area, the pain and stiffness could be

Other fibro symptoms can include: Belly pain, bloating, queasiness, constipation, and diarrhea (irritable bowel syndrome) Headaches Dry mouth, nose, and eyes Sensitivity to cold, heat, light, or sound Peeing more often Numbness or tingling in your face, arms, hands, legs, or feet Speak to your doctor if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms. Your doctor will examine you and ask you about your past medical issues and about other close family members. There's no test that can tell you that you have fibromyalgia. Instead, because the symptoms are so similar to other conditions, your doctor will want to rule out illnesses such as an underactive thyroid, different types of arthritis, and lupus. So you may get blood tests to check hormone levels and signs of inflammation, as well as X-rays.

Toss that old concealer

Because concealer is often administered in tiny doses, it's possible to (embarrassingly) realise you've been using the same tube for a lot longer than recommended. This will likely not kill you, but it also means you're probably no longer getting the lovely results that made you select this formula in the first place. “Over a long period of time, some concealers will start to break down and may darken or appear discoloured, or even separated," says cosmetic chemist Jim Hammer. "Or the product may begin to dry up. It might not smell right, or it might feel oily, or grainy, or have other issues." All are signs it's

time for a fresh start. Likewise, if at any point you notice your concealer is looking more orange or just doesn't match your skin like it used to, toss it. "Changes in colour are often indicative of problems in the product—microbial growth, oxidation—so that's a good indicator that it's time to buy a new tube," Hammer says. "Most of these products are designed to last for two years unopened on the store shelf, but it's probably a good idea to use them up within six to nine months after opening."

What do I need to watch for if I have blue or light coloured eyes? According to a representative of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, blue or light coloured eyes could increase your risk of eye cancer because there is less pigment to protect them from UV rays. However, please note that this cancer is very rare. It’s easy to protect your eyes with sunglasses, just make sure they offer maximum UV protection and combine with a hat. I have dark eyes, does this mean I don’t need to protect my eyes from the sun? No matter what your eye colour you need to protect your eyes from the sun, as it can do damage including increasing your risk of macular degeneration and causing Pinguecula and Pterygium. A 2000 study published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology found that dark-eyed people had a 1.5 to 2.5 times greater risk of cataracts. My eye colour has changed, is this a problem? Prime rib of beef with béarnaise sauce Whether you’re grilling prime rib for the first time or the hundredth, you can ensure a mouth-watering meal by following our tried and tested recipe below.

Ingredients rolled and tied 8 lb prime rib of beef, ced min lic, gar ves clo 2 6 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp olive oil pped 2 tbsp fresh thyme, cho black pepper 1 tbsp freshly ground Béarnaise Sauce r 2 tbsp tarragon vinega 2 tbsp white vinegar 1 tbsp water 2 small shallots, minced 1 tsp dried tarragon black pepper 1/4 tsp freshly cracked perature tem m roo 3 egg yolks, at at room temp ed, cub , ter but cup 3/4 pinch salt dash cayenne pepper

Directions 1. In a small bowl, combine the garlic, mustard, olive oil, thyme and pepper. 2. Pat the beef dry with paper towels, then spread the prepared mustard mixture over the surface. Let stand at room temperature for 1/2 hour. Meanwhile, prepare the barbecue by placing a drip pan under the cooking grids. Fill halfway with hot water, then preheat the barbecue on MEDIUM. Adjust the heat to MEDIUM/LOW, and place the prime rib on the cooking grids. Close the lid, and cook about 15 minutes per pound for medium rare. Using a meat thermometer to check doneness is a must. An initial check after an hour or so will give you a chance to assess the timing of the other dishes. 3. Closely monitor the level of water in the drip pan, ensuring it never

Preparation:

Preparation time – 20 minutes

Ingredients:

1 (12oz) can solid white tuna packed in water, drained 2 ripe avocados, halved and pitted 1 tablespoon mayonnaise 3 green onions, thinly sliced, plus additional for garnish ½ red bell pepper, chopped 1 dash balsamic vinegar black pepper to taste 1 pinch garlic salt, or to taste

Directions: Stir together tuna, mayonnaise, green onions, red pepper, and balsamic vinegar in a bowl. Season with pepper and garlic salt, and then pack the avocado halves with the tuna mixture. Garnish with reserved green onions and a dash of black pepper before serving.

Caramel macchiato cheesecake Ingredients:

2 cups digestive biscuit crumbs, 1/2 cup butter, melted, 2 tablespoons white sugar, 3 (8 oz) packets of cream cheese, softened, 1 cup white sugar, 3 eggs, 1 (8oz) container sour cream, ¼ cup brewed espresso or strong coffee, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, pressurized whipped cream, caramel ice cream topping

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 350ºC (175ºC). Lightly coat a 9-inch springform pan with nonstick cooking spray. 2. Mix together the digestive biscuit crumbs, melted butter, and 2 tablespoons of sugar until well combined. Press into the bottom of the prepared springform pan, and 1 inch up the sides. Bake in preheated oven for 8 minutes, then remove to cool on a wire rack. 3. Reduce oven temperature to 325ºF (165ºC). 4. Beat the softened cream cheese in a large bowl with an electric mixer until fluffy. Gradually add 1 cup of sugar, beating until blended. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in sour cream, espresso and

vanilla. Pour batter into the baked and cooled crust. 5. Bake cheesecake in the preheated oven for 1 hour and 5 minutes; then turn the oven off, partially open the door and allow the cheesecake to rest for 15 minutes more. Remove from the oven, and run a knife around the edges. Cool cheesecake on a wire rack to room temperature, then cover the springform pan with plastic

wrap, and chill in the refrigerator for 8 hours. 6. To serve, cut the cheesecake into wedges and garnish each slice with whipped cream and caramel sauce.

Saving a nearly dead houseplant 1. REPOT YOUR PLANT Moving a tired-looking fern or succulent into a fresh pot of soil can make a big difference. Be sure to select a pot a couple of inches wider than the one you are replacing. This will give the roots room to grow and thrive. 2. FEED IT BETTER Plants need healthy food too, so replace your old soil with a high-quality potting mix. Your newly-potted plant will appreciate regular feedings following the frequency recommended on the plant food package. You might also want to try fertiliser — just stick with a slow-process variety that won’t feed your plant’s roots too much at once. 3. GIVE IT SUN — SLOWLY Even though sun is for the most part good for plants, abruptly moving them into the hot, bright sun when they’re looking worse for wear can cause serious problems. Only give your plant 100 per cent indirect sun for a short time until it recovers. 4. DON’T OVERWATER The most common mistake among gardeners is not being familiar with their plants’ dormant periods, so they keep watering them. You should research when this season happens with your plant so you can make sure you’re not accidentally drowning your favourite flower. 5. GET RID OF PESTS If the leaves or stem of your plant are speckled or weak-looking, bugs might be the problem. Get rid of unwanted visitors by either gently wiping or spritzing leaves with a mild soapy water solution. 6. TRY A GREENHOUSE Some plants may need a more humid environment, which you probably don’t want for your home. To create an individual greenhouse for your plant, place a small plastic bag on top of it. Keep it like this for four to five days to revive the environment needed.

How to clean your dishwasher What you need: Distilled white vinegar Baking soda Lemon juice Cloths or soft rags Toothbrush Toothpicks Instructions 1. Run your dishwasher, or wait until just after you've run a cycle. Empty the dishwasher completely by removing the racks and utensil trays and basket. 2. Check the spinning arms to make sure all the holes are open so water can run through them freely. Clear out any debris that has built up in the holes of the spinning arm using a toothpick or other small instrument (be sure not to scratch the finish!). 3. Clean under the bottom of the door. In some dishwashers, this is a spot where water doesn't go, so it can easily accumulate debris. Inspect the floor of your dishwasher, around the drain where the wastewater exits. There will be a grate or grill around it, under the arm. Look for debris clogging up this area and remove any solid matter that has built up. If you have a filter, remove and disassemble the parts in your sink. Use a toothbrush to wash with a baking soda paste, or warm soapy water. Rinse well. 4. Next, use your toothbrush and baking soda paste to wash around the drain. Be sure to dislodge any food parts that can hang around and cause an unpleasant smell. This area can also become clogged with tags, or stickers that come off jars and dishes. 5. Wipe around the seal with a damp cloth soaked in white vinegar and a few squirts of lemon juice. For tighter areas, you can use a toothbrush. Scrub well, making sure to get the sides and edges of the machine. 6. Check utensil holders and racks for any stuck-on food pieces and then

wipe down. If they are really dirty you might want to give them a bath of warm, soapy water and let them soak overnight in your sink. Rinse well. 7. You can remove hard water deposits/ scale by running one cycle of your dishwasher (empty) with distilled white vinegar. Add 2 cups of vinegar to the bottom and turn the machine on to an energy saving or low wash. Stop the machine mid-wash, so the vinegar can set on the bottom and work. Let it stand for about 20 minutes, then turn on to finish cycle. If you have rust stains, you can tackle them with a dishwasher-safe rust remover. If the finish is chipping or flaking off the wire baskets in your dishwasher, try a sealant made just for dishwasher racks. If you have problems with mould and mildew, bleach will work effectively by

one for rinsing – or turning the tap on and off again to rinse each individual dish. A dishwasher can use about half the amount of water. Opt for one with an ‘economy’ cycle if possible. 6. Upgrade your washing machine If your model is more than five years old, you may be missing out on water-saving technology advancements.

THE NUMBER of cars on UK roads showing mileage discrepancies is costing motorists over £800 million every year according to HPI, the UK’s leading authority on vehicle checking services. The automotive data experts say the number of cars affected has also risen to one in 16. The figure has worsened from one in 20 cars less than three years ago. The illegal practice of clocking takes place when drivers look to deliberately defraud second-hand car buyers when the vehicle is sold on. Barry Shorto, head of industry relations at cap HPI said: “The problem of clocking and mileage

discrepancies in used vehicles does appear to be worsening and that’s bad news for motorists and car retailers as they are left to foot the bill. There are a number of reasons why clocking is on the up. Technology is partly to blame as the continued development of tools to alter digital odometers and the access to this technology online is becoming increasingly easier. The boom in mileage-related finance arrangements such as PCP and PCH may also be playing aggravating the problem.” The HPI Check includes a mileage check against the NMR as standard, now with over 200 million mileage

HPI also confirms whether a vehicle is currently recorded as stolen with the police, has outstanding finance or safety recalls against it or has been written-off, making it the best way for consumers to protect themselves from fraudsters looking to make a fast profit. Mr Shorto added: “Our valuation data conclusively shows the potential cost to dealers and motorists of the clocking problem. With clockers able to add thousands of pounds onto the value of a car, unsuspecting buyers stand to lose out, as do dealers. We urge retailers and consumers to conduct a vehicle history check to spot a mileage discrepancy before they buy. “It can be almost impossible to tell a clocked vehicle just by looking at it, which makes a vehicle history check an even more vital form of protection for buyers. A clocked vehicle could be hiding serious levels of wear and tear, especially if it has been previously used as a high mileage private hire vehicle for a couple of years, meaning the additional cost of unexpected repairs or even a potentially serious safety threat to driver, passengers and other road users. Tottenham won the Premier League match 3-2 but almost lost their three-goal lead as West Ham pressed for an equaliser in stoppage time. Both clubs had until 6.00pm last night (Thursday) to respond to the charge.
