Mayor of Marbella, José Bernal, plus delegates from the Junta de Andalucía and the Malaga Province met to discuss plans to deal with the dangers of forest fires. Marbella has joined the fire prevention campaign launched by the Junta and the mayor confirmed that his council was very aware of the potential dangers to residents and the
environment. In total 160 plans have been reviewed and approved since last year to deal with fire hazards. Following a disastrous forest fire in the Barranco Blanco in 2012 the city had been promised emergency aid to deal with the devastation, to date not a single euro had been received. Party countdown By Staff Reporter TONIGHT (Friday) is the night for the grand party to begin. The curtain is set to rise on Malaga’s annual Feria this evening with fireworks and music together with an expected two million visitors for the week of the fair. One of the musical highlights will be an appearance from local singer and songwriter María del Mar Rodríguez Carnero known as La Mari who will officially open the Fair at 11.50pm on Friday, enjoy the fireworks and then appear with her band Chambao at 12.20am. The night fair with its hundreds of fairground attractions, pop-up bars, dance and music is held in the special fair area at El Cortijo de Torres and appeals to young and old. The centre of the day fair is the charismatic Avenida del Marqués de Larios whose roof is swathed in canvas to try to protect visitors from the sun, but events spill across the city with museums opening with special displays and horsemen and young women in traditional parading through many of the streets. Whilst there is plenty of parking and helpful police to guide drivers for the night fair, it is recommended that visitors to the day fair park in suburbs and use public transport.

€120,501 budget winners by Jemima Roberts MIJAS Council has announced it has approved the first round of subsidies it will be handing out to local associations this year. The council has now considered nine out of the 37 requests made by local bodies to apply for local authority funding, handing out around €15,000 so far from its €120,501 pot. Tamara Vera, Councillor for Citizen Participation, explained, "we want to let residents know we have approved payments to several of the associations that have already completed the process of proving they fulfil the requirements for payments from the 2016 subsidy.” Of the nine assocations to benefit so far, Thames, Puerto los Gators and the Association of Elderly People of La Cala, are among the ones whose names have been revelead. A process is also now open for other associations to post documents and amend applications at the department. According to Councillor Vera, “we are in cinstant contact with each and every one of our assocations to resolve any doubts they might have about the procedure as well as making sure they submit all the relevant documentation in good time.” The council has encouraged all assocations which have not yet submitted applications to go to the Department for Citizen Participation at the Mayor’s Office in Las Lagunas, where staff will help with any queries. The news comes after The Mijas Disabilities Assocation (ADIMI) was last month been given a €15,000 seven-seater van by the IPV Palace Hotel to transport children to the charity’s new care centre. The handover event was attended by the Mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado, as well as the Councillor for Social Services, Mari Carmen Carmona. Mayor Maldonado commented, "we, and all the people of Mijas, must thank the hotel’s

owner for his commitment to our community. These children will now be able to attend their therapy without transportation being a problem for their families. Without this fantastic donation, many of them would not be able to get to the care centre to get involved in these activities.” Ms Carmona stressed added, "this van will provide an enormous help to parents, who, for economic reasons, could not cope with taking their children to the care centre, and had to give up their therapy.” The van is able to be adapted to carry wheelchairs, and the president of ADIMI, Cristobal Moreno, has explained the charity will do this, saying, "we are going to carry out this upgrade so we can easily transport those with reduced mobility and we will also add more routes and collections points so we can include all our users.” The new 2,000 square metre care centre, which has been open since January and cost almost €2 million, will serve 200 users, including many who were previously one the organisation’s waiting list. In addition to early care and occupational workshops already on offer, ADIMI now hope to use their new, larger premises to help adult users, as well as children and young people.
Metro success MALAGA’S metro system is the second fastest growing in Spain, according to new data. The city’s public transport system, which has been running since July 2014, attracted 469,000 passengers in June, almost 12 per cent more than normal, and almost 4 million in the last year. Malaga’s metro is growing faster than the national average of 4.2 per cent more users this year than last year, and increases on a monthly as well as yearly basis. Palma de Mallorca’s metro system is the only one outpacing faster than Malaga’s, which in turn is growing faster than Madrid’s underground network. Also revealed by the data was Seville’s drop in metro use- down by 2.4 per cent last year- while it was also shown air travel continues to be the most popular way of getting around growing by 7.9 per cent in the last year, followed by boat transport at 3.6 per cent and buses at 1.8 per cent.

by Richard Johnson WORKS to reform Calle Santa Catalina in Los Boliches are already more than 60 per cent complete. The road, which was being upgraded over a 45-day period is in the upper part of the town and covers 1,857 square metres. The mayor of Fuengirola, Ana Mula, accompanied by the deputy mayor of Los Boliches, Pedro Cuevas, and the Councillor for Works, Jose Sanchez, visited the comprehensive remodelling project which began on July 10. The works, which involve a “radical change of the route,” are being carried out over the summer to avoid causing disruption at local schools. Calle Santa Catalina is undergoing
major work to both its underground infrastructure and surface. The project’s start date was agreed in collaboration with neighbours of the area after a meeting with them the mayor to explain the details of the project and address any suggestions. According to Ms Mula, "it was necessary to do these works in summer because of the amount of students here in term time. In addition, workers are doing everything necessary to try to finish the stretch of road between Avenida de Las Salinas and Calle Antonio Machado so residents can use their car parks.” The works include renewing all supply networks, including those for rainwater, sewage, drinking water, electricity, telephone lines and lighting, as
well as replacing signage, painting and street furniture and improving accessibility. Wheelchair ramps will also be installed and pavements will be widened to a minimum width of 1.5 metres. The council is also prioritising lowering carbon emissions by replacing all street lamps with LED lamps and is reducing littering by installing six bins. Ms Mula commented, "we will have all new infrastructure to meet the needs of residents, as it was quite outdated," adding if the works continue to go well they will finish ahead of schedule. The works were put out to tender in April with a budget of €547,203.91, an amount which was eventually reduced significantly by the successful bidder, Probisa.
MIJAS Council are preparing to hand over a fire station it had been using to Fuengirola Council within the month, it has been announced. Following protracted legal wranglings, the centre will be handed back to Fuengirola in the first two weeks of September. Mijas’ Mayor, Juan Carlos Maldonado, commented, "the station is set to return to the arms of Mijas, which it should never have left.” The dispute looked set to reach eviction proceedings until Ana Mula, Fuengirola’s Mayor, wrote to her Mijas counterpart, Juan Carlos Maldonado, saying her council would vacate the building, which is located in Mijas. Fuengirola’s firefighters had been using the building for several years but have since built one within their own municipality, prompting Mijas Council to ask for the site back, even resorting to legal threats. According to media reports, Mijas’ request “was denied by former mayor and now Partido Popular member, Esperanza Oña, and by the current mayor, Ana Mula.” Fuengirola Council took the issue to court, requesting the building be gifted as payment for €4.5 mil-
lion worth of services its says have been provided by its firemen. The court sided with Mijas Council, stating nothing was owed to Fuengirola Council and it did not make sense for Fuengirola’s firefighters to remain in a building not belonging to the council. Mijas Council says it made numerous written and verbal requests to Ana Mula, asking her to vacate the building, sending a formal request on September 14, 2016, saying it wanted the building back within a month. A source says the letter went “ignored and unanswered,” prompting Mijas Council to begin eviction proceedings. Four months later, Ana Mula wrote back saying she would return the building but claiming she and Mayor Maldonado have “different interpretations” of the ruling, since it “does not contain any order imposing the building’s return and does not determine the legal status of the property,” adding the ruling only dealt with a “cost claim” between the two councils. She says she will hand back the property on the proviso a document is signed clarifying the agreement.

Acosol's CEO, Manuel Cardena, and the mayor of Mijas, Juan Carlos Maldonado, held a meeting at the headquarters of the public water company, where they have arrived at an agreement to regularise water supply to the furthest-lying urbanisations of the municipality. Cardena and Maldonado were joined by Town Planning Councillor, Andres Ruiz, and Councillor for Infrastructure, Jose Carlos Martin. Manuel Cardena commented, "those in the outskirts of Mijas currently have problems connecting to the municipal network, and thanks to this agreement we will be
able to regulate supply.” He added the project will improve the quality of life of those living away from urban centres. Mayor Maldonado added, "this is a basic necessity, and through mettings and without entering into political confrontations, a solution has been reached around the supply problem.” The news comes after it was revealed Acosol are helping to fund a €90,000 study at the University of Malaga into the cause of large slicks appearing on the coastline across the Costa del Sol. The problem, which was previously believed to be caused by red algae, has already seen one beach in Rincon de la Victoria temporarily closed and a €46.5 million fine imposed over the potential risks to human and marine health. The slick, which affects beaches in Estepona, Nerja, Alharuin el Grande, Coin
and San Pedro Alcantara, has seen politicians, conservation groups and fishermen debate over its possible cause and solution. Companies Emasa, Acosol and Axaragua, Hydralia and Aguas de Torremolinos are now stepping in to fund a study, paying between €9,900 and €21,000 each. Manuel Cardena explained although the flotsam was initially believed to have been algae, “studies in Axarquia have shown a large proportion of it is made of something else and that the solid element of it is made almost exclusively from minerals such as kaolinite and ilite, along with detrital minerals such as quartz and calcite or halite.” Meanwhile an existing study has showed any existing algae multiplies more easily in areas where sewage is present.
A WOMAN, aged 36, has been detained by the National Police after filing a false police report saying her motorbike had been stolen to cover for her boyfriend. The accused’s partner, who has also been arrested, allegedly fled a police check in Northern Malaga while on the vehicle, throwing away a kilo of cocaine which police picked up. The man’s girlfriend is then said to have gone to a police station and reported her bike stolen in an attempt to deflect blame for the alleged drug trafficking away from her boyfriend. However, police identified the man as the being the one who had fled the scene and arrested the couple. The woman was arrested for filing a false report, while her boyfriend was arrested for drug dealing. In a statement, the National Police also revealed the man was on day leave from prison, which he had secured after falsely claiming he had a job. Officers found instead the man had been faking employment contracts and payroll receipts, leading to the arrest of three police officers for their part in falsifying documents. On searching the man’s homes in Torremolinos and Malaga, officers found €2,440, steroids and anabolic substances for cutting with drugs, seven phones and a sword.

THE RESIDENTS of the Olias urbanisation in El Palo are in uproar after rubbish continues to accumulate in their streets after three bins were removed. Some residents are now saying the smell form the decomposing waste is “almost unbearable” and is starting to attract pests, including cockroaches. The bins, which were removed by company Limasa, have been returned on Tuesdays and Fridays following complaints from residents, however locals say the move has still not reolved the problem. According to media reports, local, Virginia Champenois, explained, “the first thing we knew about it a sign was put up on the wall telling us we should use the bins on the main road into town for safety reasons.” However, she says it is not practical to use the bins because “the containers are located at the bottom of a narrow, 30-metre slope, which makes it practically impossible for residents who do not have a car to walk there every day with rubbish.” The news follows reports last month politicians had complained a rubbish collection point next to Torremolinos’ bullring has been turned into an uncontrolled landfill after bins have been allowed
to overflow every day. Following an accumulation of waste after the town’s recent children’s festival, the council’s opposition party, Partido Popular (PP), called on the governing PSOE party to clean up the site, which has seen several altercations take place over claiming scrap products, preventing the “appalling image” it gives. Maria Jose Jimenez, a spokesperson for the PP has now presented a motion to create a regulation over the area, which was meant to be a temporary solution but has been in place for two years, a move which has been supported by all other parties. The PP are seeking a permanent collection point which can be better controlled and prevent illegal fly tipping. The dumping ground, which has been in operation since August 2015 and is only meant to operate from 2pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, is located in Torremolinos’ fairground, and receives garden waste, furniture, electrical appliances, and other waste, throughout the week. The council claims, however, the bins are emptied each day and point out two recycling vehicles have been in place since May, collecting paints and solvents, as well as batteries, oils, electrical equipment and ink cartridges.

Kitchen fire sparks evacuation A FIRE at a restaurant in Benalmadena’s Puerto Marina has forced a building to be evacuated and caused extensive damage to the complex. It is as yet unknown what started the inferno but according to media reports, a source at the fire service said “at the moment” it did not appear anyone had been injured. The blaze, which began at Asian restaurant, Sakura, at around 1.45pm, during the busy lunch period, caused firefighters to surround the building with foam and remove hundreds of people to safety. The Puerto Marina is currently the site of some controversy after the town’s Council was forced to launch an audit into an alleged €1 million overspend on its building. The Mayor, Victor Navas, explained he has now written to the Public Prosecutor’s Office submitting the results gained so far from the internal audit into the alleged activity between 2011 and 2015. He explained the investigation is now " nearing its end" after two years and announced a series of measures designed to tighten financial responsibility. Five businessmen and two advisers caught up in the allegations, as well as Francisco Salido, the former Councillor for the Port, and the site’s former manager, Jose Manuel Lopez Merino, remain under investigation. According to the extracts released so far
from the audit and sent to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, “excess” payments were made in 14 works contracts awarded to a group of businessmen connected to the Union Centro Benalmadena (UCB), a body which helped to manage the port under the previous council government team. After the previous team left power in 2015, the new Mayor, Victor Navas, ordered the audit, alongside the Councillor for the Port, Encarnacion Cortes. The mayor criticised his predecessor for not beginning the investigation sooner and justified the length of time the audit has taken, claiming the time has been used to “collect evidence and reconstruct the case,” adding, “we only had indications and some documents and the deals done initially seemed to be legal.” The alleged group of five businessmen responsible for the overspend are said to have created numerous companies immediately before or after the 2011 municipal elections, between them earning 66.19 per cent of Puerto Marina’s turnover, a figure reaching almost €3 million. According to the results published so far, auditors believe the “minimum amount” of overspend over the period is €1 million, owing to the “alleged excesses of previous managers.” One of those under investigation, known only as MSIP, is said to have presided over at least four companies which claimed more than €1.4 million from the port, according to

by Jemima Roberts TORREMOLINOS Council has been forced to go back on its word to carry out works restoring 31 apartment buildings in the municipality after the aid was deemed “illegal.” The current minority-governing PSOE party plans to meet with residents to explain the aid withdrawal and will begin the process of raising the necessary funds through the appropriate channels. It also claims a compensation claim could be made against the party who initially approved the subsidy. The backtracking comes after the proposed pay-out, which was promised in the 2015 election campaign when the Partido Popular (PP) had an outright majority, was criticised by a council legal report saying it was carried out “without any procedure, tender or publicity.” The report claims the way the aid, which is intended to help 658 homes and 1,500 residents across 31 apartment blocks, was apportioned was “manifestly arbitrary.” Residents who were relying
on the works, 261 of whom have been living in the same home for 65 years or more, will now be forced to wait until a new subsidy is approved. The announcement has created a political fallout between the PP and PSOE, with Immaculada Rosales, the former Social Welfare Councillor, asserting the aid was “verified perfectly through individual case-by-case studies,” and claiming its withdrawal is a “smoke screen” to divert voters’ attention away from a rise in IBI, Spain’s property tax. Pedro Perez, the current Councillor for Social Welfare, has now requested a meeting with around 1,000 residents where he will tell them the aid “cannot be given because the agreements reached in 2015 have been declared null and void,” because the previous council team “did not comply with the relevant conract regulatory procedure as set

Rising water costs by Jemima Roberts MALAGA’S Mayor, Francisco de la Torre, has said Emasa water bills will rise to meet the costs of a €130.7 million bill to improve the city’s water supply and sanitation works. The mayor explained “there is no other way out,” after it emerged no European funds were availbale to pick up the tab, before saying he had asked opposing political parties to use “strategic vision” and help approve the measure after claims party Ciudadnos was “sharply against” the proposal.” De la Torre added once the measure was passed, “residents will be informed about what works will be done and when they would begin.” He explained if prices were raised they would be done so incrementally over a period of 20 years, eventually reaching around 20 cents per cubic metre of water. A similar system was put in place between 1992 and 2009 when bills were raised to finance 136 infrastructure projects. The news comes after it emerged 123 families in Benajarafe’s La Esperanza urbanisation face having their water supply cut off after refusing to pay a €45,000 bill. The private estate, which is sixty years old, receives a monthly water bill of around €10,000, over four times higher than elsewhere in the municipality of Velez Malaga. Residents say the exorbitant rates are due to the poor condition of their water network, with up to seventy-five per cent of water

being lost to leaks and illegal connections. They claim Aqualia refuse to pay for the necessary repair work because the community is privately owned, leaving residents to pick up the bill. Locals say they have asked the council for permission to carry out only the essential works, which would cost residents around €60,000, but were refused. The say the council has instead insisted the whole network must be replaced, costing between €2.5 million and €3 million. The dispute has led to an impasse, with residents refusing to pay the full amount of their bills, owing Aqualia €38,000 of a €45,000 bill and risking having their water cut off again, as it was for five days in June and for three months in 2011. For its part, the council says because the urbanisation is “private” it should cover the costs of the work “entirely,” while Aqualia claims it has been working to resolve the problem, “proposing various solutions and even offering to finance the works.” The company further claims of the €58,300 billed since July 2016, only €13,296 has been paid, “which means in almost a year each family paid less than €10 per month.” The community’s residents feel their right are being violated however, with one, who wished to remain anonymous, telling a media outlet, “these residents pay the same IBI and waste rates as everyone else in Velez Malaga but we do not have the same rights.”
MIJAS’ Council has put together a team to clean the municipality’s parks and playgrounds over July and August. Laura Moreno, Complementary Services Councillor, has visited Parque el Abuelo alongside the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, Roy Perez, to check on the works. Councillor Moreno commented, “after launching an initiative to clean all children’s play areas in November, we decided to intensify the work over the summer months,” adding the project, “began in July and is expected to run until September.” She added, “we are also cleaning the perimeter of all parks in response to demand from residents, and we are particularly focusing on entrances to parks where we have observed mess from pets.” In addition to cleaning, the council is also landscaping the parks. Councillor Perez explained, “we have just planted 700 plants in Parque El Abuelo, as well as
Drug baron arrested on coast THE LEADER of Russia’s largest drug trafficking gang has been arrested in Mijas following a joint operation between Spanish and Estonian police. Three members of the criminal network, named Kemerovo, which operated out of Estonia, have also been arrested in Tallinn, under operation Fulcrum-Carinatus. The Estonian authorities began investigating the gang more than two years ago but stepped up their work after the leader of the Russian criminal world in Estonia was assassinated by an accountant in September 2016, sparking a violent turf war. Police believe the man arrested in Mijas moved to Spain to avoid falling victim to assassination in the wake of increasing gang violence in Estonia, as well as to establish a power base there for drug trafficking,
among other crimes, as well as to launder money. The Spanish and Estonian authorities soon started working together, investigating Kemerovo’s activities in Spain, ascertaining its leader was issuing orders to gang members in Estonia. Officers searched the man’s house and found accounting documents, hidden cash, computers, an axe and a large knife hidden under his pillow. The organisation’s other leaders, which include the group’s chief lieutenant, a martial arts expert who recruited “soldiers” to the gang, were arrested in Tallinn. Ten of the “soldiers” have been arrested over the last year and various computers have been seized from their homes.

We want to continue training all the staff that use Mijas Complementary Services.” Among the plants are native species which adapt well to the area’s climate, including adelias, daylily and rosemary, among others. Carmen de Paz, coordinator of Mijas Complementary Services, commented, “this work takes us a little longer than a professional gardener, we are hoping to hire qualified staff and also train others.”

by Rose Holmes Chronic overcrowding in some of Spain's beloved tourism hotspots such as Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca is fuelling an angry backlash, from polite protest to ‘Go Home’ graffiti and even physical intimidation. Residents are complaining that a sharp rise in tourism is making life intolerable. In Barcelona, where anger has been brewing for some time, some graffiti has turned menacing. One slogan, featuring a black silhouette with a red target on its head, reads: ‘Why call it tourist season if we can't shoot them?’
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy intervened this week after some anti-tourist anger turned physical. A video emerged of masked activists setting off flares outside a restaurant full of tourists on the island of Palma de Mallorca. They then entered the restaurant and threw confetti at frightened diners. Rajoy described the activists as ‘extremists going against common sense’. Tourism makes up 12 per cent of Spain's economy. Similar videos were released this week under the slogan ‘tourism kills neighbourhoods’. In one, several hooded individuals stop a tourist bus in Barcelona, slashing the
tyres and spray-painting the windscreen. Tourism to southern Europe has surged over the past two years, partly because visitors are choosing the region over other Mediterranean destinations where security fears are a concern, such as Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey. Visitors to Spain jumped 12 per cent in the first half of 2017 to 36.4 million. Barcelona draws at least 11 million visitors a year and is planning a new tax that will hit cruise ships: 65 cents for each visitor staying less than 12 hours. About 750 cruise ships docked at Barcelona last year.
Prince Henrik of Denmark announced recently that he does not wish to be buried next to his wife, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, saying he is unhappy he was never acknowledged as her equal. Henrik, 83, who married Queen Margrethe in 1967, was later named the Queen's Prince Consort, but has repeatedly said he would have liked to be named King Consort. The Royal Danish House's director of communications told Reuters: ‘For the Prince, the decision not to buried beside the Queen is the natural consequence of not having been treated equally to his spouse - by not having the title and role he has desired,’ she added. Prince Henrik retired last year and renounced his title of Prince Consort. Since then he has participated in very few official duties and instead spent much of his time at his private vineyard in France, although he is still married to the queen and they officially live together.

by Fabio Delucci A 7.0-MAGNITUDE earthquake struck a remote, mountainous part of China’s southwestern province of Sichuan, killing 19 people, including eight tourists, and injuring 247, the provincial government and official media said on Wednesday. The quake hit a sparsely populated area 200 km northwest of the city of Guangyuan late on Tuesday at a depth of 10 km, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It was also close to the Jiuzhaigou nature reserve, a tourist destination. Sichuan is frequently struck by tremors. A huge quake there in May 2008 killed almost 70,000 people. The Sichuan government said rescuers were gradually evacuating tourists and residents who had been cut off by landslides. It added that 19 people had been killed, but most of those injured were not seriously hurt. The dead included eight tourists, two residents and nine whose identities have yet to be confirmed at the time of printing.

Man arrested after ramming car into soldiers in Paris French police shot and arrested a man on Wednesday suspected of deliberately ramming his car into a group of soldiers in a Parisian suburb hours earlier, injuring six of them in what the government called a deliberate attack. Armed police from elite units tracked the fugitive for five hours after the attack before cornering him on a motorway in northern France and shooting him several times. The suspect was unarmed when he was trapped by police some 260 km north of Paris where he had attacked the soldiers in the affluent suburb of Levallois-Perret, a judicial source said. The man appeared to have lain in wait for the soldiers in a pedestrian zone near their base in Levallois-Perret on the northwestern edge of the capital where France's domestic counter-terrorism agency is based. He accelerated his BMW car into the troops, who were starting their patrol, when they were a few metres away, Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said, before speeding off and sparking a huge manhunt. ‘This was a deliberate act, not an accident,’ Collomb told reporters outside the hospital where the three more seriously injured victims were being treated. He said a terrorism investigation had been launched. The French press named the suspect as 37-year-old Hamou B., originally from Satrouville west of Paris and said that searches had been carried out at his home and those of his associates. Levallois-Perret is about 5 km (3 miles) from city centre landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Elysee Presidential Palace.

While most people are enjoying a well-deserved summer break, criminals are not taking time off from crime. Holiday destinations have proven to be popular hiding places for criminals on the run from law enforcement. They might even have chosen the same destination as you. That’s why your information can be vital to catch some of Europe’s Most Wanted fugitives. Law enforcement across Europe, through the European Network of Fugitive Active Search Teams (ENFAST) and Europol, are asking for your help to find out their exact locations, to ensure they take responsibility for their serious crimes. These postcards have been created on www.eumostwanted.eu/ summercampaign feature Europe’s Most Wanted fugitives, who have committed serious crimes in 21 EU countries, for whom tradi-
tional investigative measures have so far not led to the locations of the suspects. They are believed to be hiding in a different country to where the crime was committed, and the members of ENFAST are working closely together to make sure these fugitives do not evade justice. By sharing these postcards and providing information, you can help us complete that last piece of the puzzle so that we can ultimately reach the fugitives. The more the postcards are seen, the better the chance of police locating these criminals and putting them behind bars! Ferguson is sought in connection with the murder of Thomas Cameron on 28th June 2007 at the Auchinairn Tavern, Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow. He is described as between 5ft and 5ft 2 tall. He has green/blue eyes and short, balding brown/grey hair.

Pack your bags Smurfs kicked out of their Andalusian village. Juzcar, a small village in the province of Malaga once known as one of the ‘White Towns of Andalusia’, shot to fame in 2011 when buildings in the town (including the church and gravestones) were painted smurfblue by Sony Pictures to celebrate the premiere of the Smurfs movie in Spain.

Sony offered to repaint the village – home to only 240 inhabitants - white later that year but residents voted to leave the buildings painted blue, as an estimated 80,000 tourists visited ‘Smurf village’ in the six months following the repainting - the town normally had seen 300 tourists per year. Entrepreneuring locals soon realised
they could further cash in on their blue village - adorning walls with paintings of Smurfs, cramming stalls with Smurf souvenirs and some locals even dressing up as Smurf characters to pose for photos. ‘Smurf village’ is reported to have attracted 50,000 tourists a year over the past six years. But a recent dispute between the town hall and the estate of the Smurf creator, Belgian comics artist Pierre Culliford whose pen name was Peyo, resulted in the estate demanding 12 per cent in royalties on all Smurf-related income. The town hall couldn’t reach an agreement with the estate so, from August 15, there will be no more references to the small blue figures. However, the houses will remain painted blue.

Priests mistaken for stag party by Tahnee Wright SEVEN ROMAN CATHOLIC priests were refused service in a Welsh pub after staff mistook them for a stag party in fancy dress. After realising a mistake had been made, Cardiff’s City Arms offered the clergymen a round of free drinks to apologise, the Archdiocese of Cardiff said in a blog post on Tuesday. Arriving at the pub last Saturday to celebrate the ordination of Father Peter McLaren, the priests were told by a bartender that the City Arms did not serve large groups in fancy dress. The archdiocese said they had started to leave when another staff member said he believed they were real priests and invited them back in for a free drink. ‘We’d like to thank The City Arms for being good sports through all of this and their kind gesture to our seminarians,’ the blog post said. It said the priests had initially thought the bartender was joking when he mistook them for a stag party.

Terror suspect arrested in Spain Spanish police detained a suspect sought by an Interpol international arrest warrant through a request made by Turkey, reports said Tuesday. According to reports, 59-year-old Hamza Yalcın, who is accused of terror charges, was detained by the police in Barcelona. Yalcın has reportedly been living in Sweden for the past 30 years and was in Spain for a weekend getaway. He was detained Thursday as he was heading to London through passport control at Barcelona–El Prat Airport. Reports said that he was arrested based on an Interpol warrant issued by Turkey. Yalcın is accused of plotting terrorist acts at Odak Dergisi magazine. He is a dual citizen of Turkey and Sweden and is expected to be extradited to Turkey.

Will the Balearics’ say bye-bye to Airbnb? by Tahnee Wright The Balearic Islands ruled on Tuesday that they will penalise landlords for illegally renting apartments to tourists with fines of up to €40,000 euros, amid a backlash against the effects of mass tourism across the country. The move is an escalation in efforts to crack down on home-sharing sites such as Airbnb by city councils or local authorities in Spain, as concern mounts over the sideeffects of their increasing popularity. Airbnb, much like ride-hailing firm Uber, is facing a crackdown from legislators worldwide triggered in part by lobbying from the
hotel industry which sees the rental service as unfair competition. In the Balearic Islands, which drew more foreign visitors than any other region in Spain this June, rental costs have jumped and there are fears of a housing shortage for residents. Rental prices in Palma de Mallorca, the Mediterranean archipelago's biggest city, have risen 40 per cent in the last five years, according to property platform Mitula. The island of Ibiza has the biggest density of Airbnb rentals, with a tourist apartment for every 30 residents, data from analytics firm Airdna showed. Renting apartments without a licence was banned in the region in 2012 under a
previous administration but enforcement was largely nonexistent, according to the Balearic government. The new legislation establishes fines of between €20,000 and €40,000 for those offering short rentals without a license to tourists. Local residents will be able to report suspected illegal flats though a website, and online platforms such as Airbnb and Homeaway could also face fines of up to €400,000 if they are found to advertise rentals without a license number. The Balearics' four islands will each have a year to decide if and where they will allow licensed tourist rentals to continue.

Clarkson in hospital in Spain Jeremy Clarkson has been hospitalised with pneumonia while on holiday in Mallorca. Clarkson, host of Amazon's The Grand Tour motoring show, was hospitalised last Friday. He posted an image on social media on Saturday showing his arm with a hospital identity badge. The 57-year-old joked: ‘not the sort of bangles I usually choose on holiday.’
Clarkson had been on holiday with his family after shooting the Amazon Prime show with co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May. The trio are the former hosts of the BBC programme Top Gear. They signed with Amazon for The Grand Tour after Clarkson was fired for punching a producer in a dust-up while filming.
Australia could legalise same-sex marriage by as early as the end of this year, after the government announced an attempt to hold a national vote on the issue. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters on Tuesday he would ‘give all Australians a say’ on whether same-sex marriage should be legal. "I'll be voting yes, as will my wife, I'm very open about that but the Australian people are never wrong when they vote, whether it's for governments or on matters like this, their vote will be respected," Turnbull said. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Spain since July 3, 2005. Approximately 4,500 same-sex couples married in Spain during the first year of the law. In England and Wales, same-sex marriage was legalised on March 13, 2014 and the first same-sex marriages took place on March 29, 2014.

The Wright Plaice welcomes take away orders and includes a number of options which you don’t normally see in fish restaurants in Spain so apart from Cod, Plaice and Scampi, they also offer Haddock, Skate and Rock giving customers a real choice. If someone doesn’t fancy fish, there is a wide selection of traditional pies, burgers (including a vegetarian option), spit roasted chicken and sausages together with all of the side dishes that you would expect including the ubiquitous Wally, a London name for a large pickled gherkin. For those who have room after filling themselves with the specially prepared and good sized main courses, ice cream or a delicious home-made dessert of the day are always available. In Britain, Germany, France, and different EU states, the electorate elect the lesser of two evils. French President Emmanuelle Macron’s election was spun as a landslide. Yet, polls suggest that as few as one in five French electors support their head of state. This is not democracy. In Sweden, 72.9 per cent of the electorate plan to vote for parties other than the ruling Social Democrats. In Norway 68 per cent intend to vote against the current Labour regime. To avoid electoral defeat unpopular regimes form coalitions. Britain’s premier Theresa May was forced to form a coalition with 10 MPs of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). This is not democracy either. Westerners believe their older electoral systems superior to former Soviet Bloc nations. Not true: Countries like Slovakia, Poland, and Czech Republic

and in particular Hungary set an example in democracy that shames western governments. Hungary’s Fidesz Party, headed by Victor Orban, enjoys a level of support far beyond the dreams of Chancellor Merkel, President Macron and UK premier Theresa May. Seven years since elected Fidesz is more popular than ever. The right-nationalist party polled in excess of 60 per cent of votes cast during recent elections. Unlike their western peers Hungary’s parliamentarians can truthfully say they are elected because they are good at their job. Fidesz popularity has been achieved by doing something quite revolutionary to western ears. Their parliamentarians actually listen to their electorate, government policies reflect the wishes of Hungarians. There are 25 per cent more Hungarians in work today than there were in 2010. The government recovered and revitalised industries, public utilities and natural resources that had been auctioned off to foreign interests by corrupt predecessors. Hungarians fear their being dependent upon the whims of outside interests. Foreign influence has been eliminated in banking, media, and state and education sectors. Non-European immigrants are kept out whilst ethnic Hungarians are presented with an eyewatering choice of inducements to marry and raise large families.
Hungarian PM, Czech and Polish parliamentarians respond to EU threats and sanctions with the two-fingered salute. So they should; 98 per cent Hungarians reject Brussels impudent immigrant quotas. Irony is that there is far greater division of wealth, happiness and democracy in the EU than there was when Europe was separated by anti-tank ditches, razor wire, watchtowers and border checkpoints. How long before Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia erect them again to keep the westerners out.

When I read of the goings on in some UK schools today; with pupil-on- teacher violence, savage bullying and a total disrespect for authority, it horrifies me. Sure in my day we may have transported the art master’s cycle from the bike sheds to the roof on
one occasion, and sent an explicit Valentine’s card to the P.E. master’s house – he was distinctly unhappy about that, but not as unhappy as his wife who happened to open it – but these were just relatively harmless pranks compared to the stuff we hear about today. And remember, those were the days when limited corporal punishment was acceptable in schools, and the cane was a useful and effective deterrent administered in our case, by the deputy head. The liberal minded will advocate that corporal punishment was a bad thing and that violence only begets violence. But having been schooled during the 50’s and early part of the 60’s, and seen the results, I say nonsense. Individual masters were also permitted to mete out their own punishment as and when required and one such was Mr TreweekDew an English
teacher, who kept ‘Rudolph’ hanging from a chain on the blackboard. ‘Dewey’ was a bear-like man, who paced the school corridors menacingly. With his military style moustache, and tweed jacket that looked as if the coat hanger had been left in, he was a formidable figure. ‘Rudolph’ was a black plimsoll and was a constant visible reminder to pay very close attention to the pearls of wisdom imparted to us. We often speculated why the shoe was called Rudolph, and the nearest we came to an answer was that Rudolph tended to leave you with a very red extremity. These realities however held no dread for us and we looked upon them as natural and just, and all part of a happy and balanced school life. As for the teachers themselves, much of it was implied rather than applied, sometimes with tongue in cheek and often with humour. We knew just how far to take things, and if we exceeded the limits, we accepted the consequences - and all with the full approval of our parents. That being said, I have to reluctantly go along with the PC brigade who dictate that children today should never be physically punished either in school or by their parents. No really I do. I mean, some of those little darlings carry knives!

Open-air Flamenco concerts at Velez-Malaga
Some of the biggest names in contemporary Flamenco, including the legendary Jorge Pardo, will grace the stage at Velez-Malaga this month. The concerts will be held in the open-air theatre on top of Velez’s Cerro de San Cristobal,

Masculine and feminine

This week I promised we’d go on to something new. We’re going to spend a bit of time looking at nouns, followed later on by adjectives, before we return to the construction of complete sentences using verbs. Before we do that though, I always think it’s a good idea to summarise where we’re up to, so here are the things we have covered in the first seven lessons of this series. First of all we have learnt some thirty verbs in their infinitive, or basic form. That is the form that we translate as “to ….” and which in Spanish ends in either – ar, -er or –ir. Then we have seen that certain verb forms related to “I” can go in front of these to make a basic sentence structure. Quiero (I want); puedo (I can); necesito (I need); voy a (I’m going to); me gusta (I like); prefiero (I prefer) and tengo que (I have to). We have also looked at three examples where changing these forms slightly gives us a “you” sentence – vas a (you are going to); quieres (you want); tienes que (you have to). In addition we have learnt the link words pero, (but) and para (in order to), which allow us to extend our sentences to make them more complete and meaningful. Now to today’s business– nouns. The word “noun” simply means the name of something, so it refers to
people and things like “man” and “table” and also ideas and feelings like “democracy” and “happiness”. We also have what we call “proper nouns” which are specific names like “Mary” or “England”. Proper nouns always start with a capital letter in English and Spanish: “María”, “Inglaterra”. The way the English language is structured it is not important at all whether a noun refers to a male or a female. We simply have different words (man, woman, stallion, mare etc.) whilst everything else is simply a neutral object (table, car, chair, paper). In Spanish every noun is considered to be either masculine or feminine, so just as hombre (man) and mujer (woman) are masculine and feminine, so words for objects are too: mesa (table – feminine); coche (car – masculine); silla (chair – feminine); papel (paper – masculine). Now it is very important for us to realise that the concept of “masculine” and “feminine” does not relate to the thing itself but to the word. In other words we shouldn’t be thinking about why a table is considered feminine and a car is considered masculine, we simply need to accept that the word mesa is a feminine word and coche is a masculine word. To illustrate this point, here are some examples: vestido (dress – masculine), camisa (shirt – feminine), bolsa (general word for “bag” - feminine), bolso (handbag – masculine). Even more interesting persona (person – feminine) and víctima (victim – feminine); in all these examples and many more the gender of the word bears no relation to the gender
identification of the object or person. So, two questions need answering before we continue talking about this matter next week. Firstly, how do we know when a word is masculine or feminine? and secondly, why is it important? In answer to the first question, it is very common for masculine words to end in the letter “o” and feminine words to end in the letter “a”, although this is not always the case. There are some exceptions that are the other way round, and also many words that end in different letters. However, it is quite a good indicator to start with. Then there are certain characteristic endings. Two of the most common examples are words that end in –dad and –ción which are always feminine. Now the second question – Why is it important? To be honest at the early stages of language learning, when you only know a few words and are getting simple messages across to people (like how many beers you want), then it really doesn’t matter very much at all. However, as you progress with the language you start to discover that this masculine/feminine divide runs right through the language and affects a lot of other words in a sentence. Kenny, I recently took some photos and above my husband’s head there are many circles of light. Looking at the scene through my camera there is nothing, but after the photo is taken there are several discs hovering above him. Is something bad going to happen? Penny H-S.
I certainly hope not Penny! Such orbs are transmissions of energy from the Spirit World. I visited the Viking Museum in Oslo and took many photos of the Ships on display. One Ship had two big orbs and four smaller ones at the back of the craft. A custodian told me that this was a funeral ship and that the bodies of two adults and four children were discovered there. Is it possible that your husband has had a recent bereavement? Such an energy force can be the silent message that Spirit send to just say that all is well and that they are safe. ON AVERAGE, men go to their GP half as often as women. It's important to be aware of changes to your health, and to see your GP immediately if you notice something's not right. This week, we look at moles. Some moles are present at birth, although most develop during the first 30 years of life. People with fair skin often have more moles than people with darker skin and you are more likely to develop lots of moles, or a certain type of mole, if they are common in your family. Where you were brought up may also make a difference; for example, if you were born in a hot country or have spent many years living in the sun, you may have a lot of small moles. Most moles are completely harmless. However, they may be unsightly and affect your confidence. Moles can also be a nuisance, especially if they regularly catch on your clothing or you cut them while shaving. See your GP if a mole looks unusual or becomes itchy. It can then be checked and removed surgically if needed, although it can be an expensive process. To minimise the risk of skin cancer, always try to avoid exposure to the sun between 11am and 3pm. Remember ‘slip, slap, slop’ and use a cream with a sun protection factor of at least 15. Finally, you should check your skin every few months for any new moles that develop (particularly after your teenage years, when new moles become less common) or any changes to existing moles; remember, a mole can change in weeks or months.
Documentary likens one egg to five cigarettes A new documentary produced by Joaquin Phoenix is coming under fire from doctors and scientists over its bold claims about the adverse effects of consuming eggs and meat. A recent arrival on Netflix, What the Health asserts that eating one egg per day is equivalent to smoking five cigarettes and consuming a single portion of processed meat increases the risk of diabetes by 51 per cent. These facts are listed on the documentary’s homepage, along with links to sources from medical journals but a handful of venerable doctors and scientists recently spoke out to the British press, saying that these sources can’t be trusted. Alexandra Freeman, the executive director of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication, told the Times UK that the statistic about eggs is from ‘an extremely controversial paper,’ while a cancer
researcher named Alice Howarth remarks: ‘What the Health overwhelms the viewer with scaremongering ‘facts’ which do not hold up to scientific investigation.’ As for the meat-diabetes connection, that statistic comes from one journal that cited the relative risk of increase, not the absolute risk. Beyond this, however, are there other health reasons to worry if you regularly bite your nails? Disease-Causing Bacteria Your nails are an ideal location for bacteria
to thrive, and that includes potentially pathogenic bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli (which would love to call the underside of your nail tips home). As you bite your nails, those bacteria easily transfer into your mouth and the rest of your body, where they may lead to infections. Your fingernails may actually be twice as dirty as your fingers, considering they're difficult to keep clean, making this a prime point of transfer for infectious organisms. Nail Infections Nail biters are susceptible to paronychia, a skin infection that occurs around your
nails. As you chew your nails, bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms can enter through tiny tears or abrasions, leading to swelling, redness, and pus around your nail. Dental Problems Nail biting can interfere with proper dental occlusion, or the manner in which your upper and lower teeth come together when you close your mouth. Your teeth may shift out of their proper position, become misshapen, wear down prematurely, and become weakened if you bite your nails over time.

1. Preheat oven to (95ºC). In a small bowl, combine crushed thyme, sage, salt, and pepper. Rub evenly over pork chops. 2. Melt butter and olive oil in a nonstick frying pan. Cook pork chops for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, turning once. Remove from frying pan and keep warm in preheated oven.

OVER A BARREL: Mature or an immature fake? ACCORDING to experts, the €8,670 measure of Macallan 1878 vintage Scotch whisky bought at a St Moritz hotel was a fake. The unnamed Chinese guest paid CHF9,999 (€8,670) for a 2cl measure of the single malt in the Devil’s Place bar at the Hotel Waldhaus in St Moritz, Switzerland which is in the Guinness Book of Records for having 2,500 varieties of whisky on offer, at the end of July. Now the hotel has launched a full investigation after a number of
whisky enthusiasts raised concerns about the authenticity of the Macallan bottle, and may take legal action over the matter. Macallan owner Edrington has also promised to help with the inquiry. “I got some information from a whisky expert that this bottle could be a fake,” said Sandro Bernasconi, manager of the hotel. “I’ve done some research and talked to different people. I called the Chinese guest to tell him that it could be a fake and said we would
give the money back [if it is]. It’s very important to us to find out if it’s a real bottle or if it’s a fake.” He added: “We’re open to find out the truth. If we had known it before, we would never have sold it.” The labels on the dark-coloured glass bottle state that the whisky was distilled in 1878, and was matured in barrels for 27 years. Tests are likely to analyse the cork, glass, label and liquid. “If there are some fake bottles, then we have to destroy them,” said Bernasconi.

New face of the Kia Sportage The all-new Sportage also has a 30 mm longer wheelbase, a 40 mm greater overall vehicle length, a more aerodynamic rear spoiler, longer front overhangs and shorter rear overhangs. The wheel arches on the press vehicle were filled with 19” alloy wheels shod with low profile 245/45R19 tyres. The completely redesigned interior features high quality materials and design integrity, as well as great practicality and a range of technologies to improve comfort, convenience, connectivity and safety. A range of new and updated engines and transmissions results in enhanced efficiency and performance, while ride, handling and refinement are all improved. Safety is very high on the Kia agenda and the new Sportage comes with no less than six airbags, ISOFIX child-seat tether and anchor points fitted to the second row of seats, while pedestrian safety is further improved with a lower leading edge on the bonnet and a larger impact absorption area. THE KIA SPORTAGE originally launched at the Frankfurt International Motor Show in September 2015, has done good business for the brand and has now been superseded by the latest model which aims to continue the trend. With bold styling and a spacious interior packed with more technology than ever before. The new fourth-generation Sportage models are built at KIA’s manufacturing facility in Žilina, Slovakia and comprise of five models. The derivative featured in these first impressions is the new to the range, Kia Sportage 2.4 GDI SX AWD. Peugeot takes the Silk Way Rally Urumqi while driving off the main track to avoid a rocky river bed. His car tripped over a drainage channel, damaging it badly, and although the DKR Maxi was eventually able to be repaired, Loeb sprained a finger and couldn’t continue. Despite this misfortune, the French duo gained more experience and know-how of tackling long distance events. Stéphane Peterhansel, the winner of the Dakar Rally this year (and the most successful driver in Dakar history) had his chances of Silk Way Rally victory ruined in the first week, when he lost two hours after an accident. Nonetheless, from the bottom of the overall classification he fought back resiliently to claim a top-five finish, setting more fastest stage times on the Silk Way Rally than any other driver. Not only that, but Peterhansel performed
a vital role as ‘guardian angel’ over Despres in the closing stages of the rally, helping his colleague to maintain his leadership by being on hand to assist in the event of any issues. This proved to be invaluable, with Despres able to drive securely in the knowledge that his team mate was on hand. “The rally did not end the way we wanted it to for myself and Daniel, but I’m very happy for the whole Peugeot team and
especially Cyril and David for this important victory,” said Peterhansel. “It was also a great feeling to lead the event with a good margin during the first week, and I think the Maxi was a key factor in helping to achieve this, although it was more suited to certain stages than others. Now we will continue the development work, using all the important lessons we have learned from Silk Way, in preparation for the Dakar.”

PEUGEOT HAS triumphed again on the Silk Way Rally, which took place from Russia to China over two weeks, having also claimed the event last year with Cyril Despres. The French brand set off from the start in Moscow with three cars: one Peugeot DKR Maxi for Loeb, and two examples of the current Peugeot DKR, which also locked out the podium on the Dakar Rally in January. The Peugeot DKR Maxi featured a wider track that was 10 centimetres longer on each side, as well as other technical improvements that were being trialled on the Silk Way Rally, for the Dakar Rally next year. Sebastien Loeb used it to lead the rally at an impressive pace for the first week, claiming four stage wins in total. With an advantage of more than an hour, Loeb crashed the day after the rest day in
