IT'S a journey they have made for many years - Mags Luffingham driving and Sue Fisher Jones wedged in the back seat with one or two panting dogs from PaD, because it's always hot in June and their destination always the same: Swan's school in Marbella. This year, their travelling companion is bright eyed, tail thumping Maya, an abandoned sevenyear-old cross golden labrador, eager for a car journey and the excitement of the unknown. Equally excited it seems, are the pupils of Swan's School on their arrival, always eager to see their ‘doggie’ companion(s) and so proud of what they have achieved in their 'annual Spelling Bee'.

The Spelling Bee was originally the concept of the President of PaD, Lisa Emeny, and has now become a yearly event. With pupils being sponsored to learn their spelling by family and friends, each form is keen to show their total, with the money being presented in ‘sweetie` bags by the pupil who has raised the highest amount. Maya was particularly interested in the bags, [more tail thumping] and was slightly disappointed that they were not full of doggie treats, not realising that the money involved would buy sack loads of treats and so much more for herself and her friends. The total raised this year was €3,457 but in the

last 12 years more than €75,000 has been raised by the pupils to help the animals in the PaD shelter. a fantastic partnership has been formed with groups of children regularly visiting the shelter to understand how their money is being spent, to pat, stroke, feed biscuits and play with the dogs in the garden. Puppies are always the main attraction! On behalf of PaD, heartfelt thanks go to Swan's for their incredible concern and support, to the pupils for their excellent learning, to their sponsors for their continued generosity and to the staff for their wonderful organisation, in particular, Miss Janice, their liaison between shelter and school.

Girl power takes to the streets by Jemima Roberts MIJAS COUNCIL has begun to receive suggested female names following a school campaign to increase the number of streets in the town named after women. Local women’s associations have been sending in proposals after the council decided to name all new roads after illustrious women following a project entitled Merezco una calle (I deserve a street), carried out by students at Mijas’ IES Cartima school, which found the number named after women is 42, compared to 178 named after men. The students carried out research of 220 road names and found that of the few streets named after women, a remarkable 60% took the name of saints rather than famous female figures. The town’s Councillor for Equality, Mari Carmen Carmona, met with Rosa Liarte, a teacher from IES Cartima, last month to discuss the campaign, commenting, “we found it very interesting because it shows it still takes so much for women to be noticed. The council want to prioritise equality which is why we wanted to get involved with the project Rosa has presented to us.” The campaign began in an Equality and Social Change class when students were dealing with the issue of “backdoor sexism.” Through their research they found the number of streets named after men was almost four time the amount named after women. Ms Liarte explained “the children ques-

tioned whether sexism still existed so I set out to analyse the streets of Cartama to see how many of them had a man's name and how many women, and when they saw the results, the children could not believe it.” Now both the students and their teacher are campaigning to the coun-

cil, and have caught their attention after carrying out an analysis of Mijas’ roads. The council has now committed to using women’s names for any new roads built in the extension of Las Lagunas and are taking suggestions on the names of important female figures from students.

Faster access to health tests

THE ANDALUCIAN HEALTH SERVICE (SAS) has passed a proposal to allow family doctors to refer their patients for complex health tests. The move, which will come into place in midSeptember, aims to improve diagnostic speed and simplify the health care system. Previously only specialists were able to send patients for MRI and CT scans, as well as ultrasounds and other tests. In addition, doctors will also be able to perform minor procedures and surgeries in new operating theatres. The SAS now plans to work out how many patients each doctor is seeing to ensure there are enough physicians to carry out the work and further doctors and nurses will be hired if it is found there are not currently enough. Patients suffering from chronic illnesses will also receive improved treatment after the SAS plans to put together coordinated teams comprising nurses, case managers, doctors and social workers to help those with long-term ailments. According to a spokesperson from the SAS, “we are going to take advantage of the rest of the summer to finish the organisation work and implement out new measures from September 15.”

€40m tourist attraction mooted

A STUDY into the potential impact of a multi-million Euro “Malaga Eye” style ferris wheel in the city’s port, is due to be published in September. The proposed attraction would see a permanent 100 metre wheel replace the current temporary 70-metre one, which has been in place since last year. The ride, which is designed by architect Jeronimo Junquera, would mean building a new plaza and access footbridge, which has raised doubts among the port authorities. The attraction’s proposers have commissioned a study by Malaga consultant, Afora Trafico y Transporte (Now Traffic and Transport), in the hope the results will assuage any doubts about the feasibility of the project, which already has the City Council’s approval. A deadline for a decision over the attraction’s future has been set for November, at which point it will be decided whether the temporary wheel will be replaced or stay in position.

by Jemima Roberts Maldonado explained, "we want to thank the work of adeMijas and its partners within the council, who have helped to promote the municipality at the world padel tour, an international sporting event, which has been an important chance to showcase the town. it was essential to do things well because the influx of public has been massive and we had to keep day to day normality in the municipality. The project worked extraordinarily well." adeMijas’s main objective is ensuring the unemployed aged over 40 stay connected to the workplace. in their most recent initiative, members have been given public-private market experience through the parking scheme and have seen their work valued by the council. Mijas Council has said it will continue to work to eradicate unemployment in the municipality both through public schemes and with the collaboration of private initiatives.

A truth universally acknowledged ARRROYO DE LA MIEL’S public library has payed homage to Jane Austen in an event to commemorate the bicentennial of the author’s death. The day, which celebrated the writer of novels including Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility, took place at the town’s Innova Centre from 10am and involved round table talks, screenings and a play about her work. The free event also featured a lecture by University of Malaga professor, Juan Jesus Zaro, who gave a translation of her books. The vice president of the association, El Sitio de Jane, also spoke about the historical context of Jane Austen’s life. From 5pm a tour began, organised by the Arroyo de la Miel library, and at 6pm a play, Love and Friendship, was shown.

Self-cleaning toilets hit the beach FUENGIROLA’S COUNCIL has unveiled four new selfcleaning toilets on the beaches of Carvajal, Los Boliches, Fuengirola and Castillo, at a cost of €124,795. The new additions join four others installed a year ago, which are now all open to the public for free. Jose Sanchez, Councillor for Beaches, said "we have seen the impact these toilets have had amongst users. For this reason, we decided to acquire four more, the same as the ones we bought last year, since they were in high demand.” The councillor went on to explain Fuengirola was the first municipality on the Costa del Sol to have offer the facilities. Sanchez added the toilets came after requests from locals and visitors. Before now, only five public toilets were located along the coast, in addition to the 29 offered by chiringuitos, which are open to the public. As the councillor explained, “we thought it was a good idea to expand this number.” The toilets, which can be used from 8am to midnight, are perfectly adapted for people with reduced mobility, and the entire toilet space, including the toilet and floor, is automatically cleaned for 30 seconds once they have been used, with a maximum visit time of 15 minutes per user. The automatic cleaning process ensures the facilities, which are very common across the rest of Europe, remain in perfect condition. Sanchez added, "although these toilets have a selfcleaning system every time they are used, the Municipal Beach Service also carries out a daily review of them, to replenish toilet paper and perform a daily inspection of the equipment.”

Bank funds green project by Jemima Roberts FUENGIROLA’S COUNCIL has teamed up with La Caixa bank’s social work team to put on an exhibition, entitled El Bosque (the woods), on the importance of conserving ecosystems. The display, which runs until September 12 on the town’s promenade, includes examples of Spain’s main tree species, as well as their ecology and relationship with humans, in addition to presenting five of the most unique trees from the Iberian peninsula. Ana Mata, vice president of the Provincial Council and deputy mayor of Fuengirola, teamed up with Rodrigo Romero, Councillor for Culture, to attend the launch of the educational exhibit, alongside Juan Carlos Martin, Area Director of CaixaBank, and Francisco Javier Gomez, curator of the display. Ana Mata commented, "Fuengirola is a cultural hotspot in the summer season and this exhibit increases our offering, providing a new leisure activity which is aimed not only at children but also at adults.” She thanked the work of La Caixa, adding "Fuengirola has organised another summer activity which

will be useful for the municipality’s school children over the holidays, as well as locals and tourists.” Juan Carlos Martin explained, "our foundation is committed to paying back what we get from society in the form of cultural and social contributions and that is what we are doing here today. This exhibition combines science, education and social work” Francisco Javier Gomez added "we have been told Fuengirola is a fashionable destination and we welcome this type of environmental initiative which will reach as many people as possible, so we can make them aware of the importance of conserving ecosystems.” Spain has 14,732,247 hectares of wooded area out of a total area of 50,595,505 hectares of country, with forests representing 29% of Spain’s surface area. The forest is not a set of trees, but instead complex ecosystem, where the different elements that form it, including trees, shrubs, animals, fungi, and bacteria, play a fundamental role and are closely related to one another. As a component of the biosphere, woods fulfil a number of fundamental ecological functions.

Three arrested over burglary spree THE GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested two young people, aged 19, and another, aged under-18, for several thefts in Alora. Police started investigations under Operation Dilamar after receiving complaints of burglaries from businesses in the area, including several banks, where the group attempted to force their way into ATM machines, although they only succeeded in damaging them. Following their inquiries, officers located the three, arresting them for six aggravated burglaries, five of which were attempted robberies, as well as burglary from several businesses. Police also hold the group responsible for a car theft from a warehouse, and have managed to recover the vehicle.

Minimum pre-test driving lessons proposed ACCORDING tO Spain's General Directorate of traffic (DGt), a minimum number of driving lessons may be introduced as a legal requirement before candidates can take a test. this would include the theory test as well as the practical, meaning it would no longer be solely down to the student whether they felt they were adequately prepared to take the tests. the idea is to partly prevent a selection of inexperienced drivers who are supremely confident that they can have a good day and pass the tests, but in truth aren’t ready to face the realities of day-to-day driving. the exact minimum number of lessons which will apply has not yet been decided.

Police investigate animal poisonings by Jemima Roberts THE GUARDIA CIVIL’S Nature Protection Service (Seprona) is investigating the appearance of pesticides disguised as dog treats around Torremolinos. The officers have warned the crime, which was reported by residents, carries a fine of up to €300,000 and up to two years in prison. Police have also warned dog and cat owners the poison, which has been strategically placed in areas frequented by animals, could be lethal and also poses a threat to children. Two of the pesticides used, aldicarb and carbofuran, are banned by the European Union due to the danger they pose to public health, according to the Ministry for the Environment, while Torremolinos Council has warned the colourful chemical which comes in a powder form could look like candy to children. Aldicarb, which has been banned since 2007, is described as a “deadly weapon” by animal activists as it stops the respiratory system, while carbofuran is one of the deadliest pesticides and can kill a bird with a single grain. An animal charity, Animal Liberation, has said there is often a rise in poisonings in residential coastal areas during the summer months, with El Pinillo being one of the worst affected. They commented, “the pools open and some cats start to go near them. Dogs also come out more and people complaining.” The Guardia Civil have also criticised people for putting sulphur down on roads in an effort to keep animals away, saying it is illegal, as well as “useless, toxic, dangerous and polluting.” The authorities recommend anyone finding a poisoned animal to not touch it and instead call the police or Seprona and ask for the area to be cleaned in case of further poison. The Ministry of the Environment has also collaborated with Seprona to launch the Andalucian Strategy Against Poison (EAV) to raise “social awareness and encourage the prevention of poison use as well as promoting police action.”

Cocaine delivery gang foiled THE NATIONAL POLICE have brought down a network of three people who were allegedly running a telephone-cocaine service in Fuengirola. The gang of two men, aged 57 and 61, and a woman, aged 58, has now been charged with drug trafficking and illegal weapon possession after police have seized 255 grams of cocaine, a pistol with 110 bullets, a rifle, four drugs scales, and €7,960, £325 and $100 in cash from their property. The trio were said to have been delivering cocaine to a group of regular customers from their cottage, under the business name tele-cola. Officers started investigating the gang in a crackdown on small and medium-sized drug rings after receiving information about a group in Fuengirola. Their inquiries led them to a house where they found drugs, firearms and cash.

Motorway misery to continue THE TRAFFIC DIRECTORATE (DGT) has ruled out a series of measures to ease traffic congestion on Malaga’s roads this summer. by Jemima Roberts Drivers complaineD after tailbacks reached 30 kilometres on the a-7 last weekend, calling on the authorities to allow the hard shoulder to be used. However the DGT says it would not be safe do so and instead has suggested motorway-users stay off the roads in peak hours. it is anticipated use of the province’s roads will increase by 5 per cent by the end of the summer, leaving drivers stuck in heavy traffic. The DGT has now recommended avoiding main roads between 8pm and 10pm, while traffic is at its heaviest, and making use of toll roads, which it claims save money on fuel consumption. The association of Drivers has demanded the body lowers the cost of toll roads, however, to compensate for the extra traffic, while, mario arnaldo, president of european automobile association (aea), has suggested the DGT improve its communication programme to allow drivers to be aware of possible traffic jams. He said, “the road capacity cannot be increased but information could be improved so drivers can plan their trips bet-

ter.” He added multiple car collisions also fuelled the problem, saying, “motorists must maintain safety distances. The motorway’s capacity is 4,000 vehicles per lane per hour but this decreases in the case of an accident.”

Open Letter to UK Citizens Living in Spain, from Her Majesty’s Ambassador Simon Manley Given the success of the Spanish State visit to the UK the week before last, which, among other things, highlighted the importance of people to people links between our two countries, i thought it timely to return to the subject of citizens’ rights in the negotiations on our departure from and future partnership with the eU. in the year since the eU referendum, i’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of you across the country, from the Balearics to the Canaries, along the Costas and in Madrid, and our consular teams have met many more. i know from those conversations that there has been uncertainty for many of you. My teams and i have listened to your concerns about the future, including about your residency status in Spain, the level of your UK pensions, and your access to Spanish health and other social services, and have noted the questions you have about tax, inheritance, right to work and the implications of applying for Spanish nationality. At our meetings, on our social media and in interviews, i have also pledged to keep you up to date as negotiations on our exit from the european Union continue. So, let me update you on where matters stand now, in light of the latest negotiation round in Brussels last week. the UK Government has been clear that citizens are our top priority in the exit negotiations. We want an agreement that provides citizens with greater certainty about their future. Last week, we held constructive and substantive discussions with the european Commission on the bulk of the issues underpinning our respective positions on citizens’ rights. together we have taken a big step forward. there is a much clearer understanding on the detail of the positions on both sides and significant convergence on the key issues that really matter to citizens. it is clear both sides want to move towards an agreement. As you know, on 26 June, the Prime Minister outlined to Parliament an offer to protect the rights of eU citizens in the UK. We are entering the negotiations with the european Commission and the other 27 eU Member States constructively and we therefore hope that the eU27 will offer reciprocal treatment for British nationals resident in the other Member States. Many of you will have seen press reports of our 26 June offer, whether in the UK or Spanish media. i hope you will also have read the detailed proposals which are set out in “Safeguarding the position of eU citizens in the UK and UK nationals in the eU” and i would encourage you to sign-up for email alerts (you can do so on the home Office gov. uk page) to receive updates, to ensure that you are receiving information and guidance from official sources. the first key element of the new proposal is residence status and working rights. Until the UK’s exit, eU citizens in the UK will continue to enjoy all the rights they currently have under eU law; they can continue to live and work in the UK just as they do now. the same rights also apply to you, British residents in Spain. You can continue to live and work here in Spain as you always have done. After the UK’s exit from the eU, we are proposing a recipro-

cal deal that would protect the right of UK nationals already in the eU to continue to live and work in the eU. We hope that the european Commission and the 27 other Member States will agree to this. the second key element is healthcare, pensions, education and access to benefits. it is our intention to treat eU citizens with settled status in the UK in the same way as if they were UK citizens for the purposes of access to education, benefits and pensions. For you, the Government has announced that the UK will continue to export and uprate the UK State Pension and provide associated healthcare cover within the eU, issues which i know from my conversations over the last year were important to many of you. At the moment, those of you who are UK pensioners and resident in Spain access healthcare through the S1 form. this means the UK reimburses Spain the cost of providing medical treatment. After the UK leaves the eU, we want to continue your healthcare entitlements on the same basis. healthcare in Spain was indeed one of the case studies cited in the detailed proposals made by the British Government on 26 June. Subject to negotiations, we want to continue participating in the european health insurance Card scheme meaning ehiC holders continue to benefit from free, or reduced-cost, needs-arising healthcare while on a temporary stay in the eU — and vice versa for eU ehiC holders visiting the UK. We hope the european Commission will agree to this. the British Government has repeatedly said that, until exit negotiations are concluded, the UK remains a full member of the european Union and all the rights and obligations of eU membership remain in force. You can continue travelling throughout the eU on your UK passport, without any visa requirements. Princess Diana’s music collection among items to go on display at palace this summer RaRely-seen possessions belonging to Britain's late Princess Diana including her music collection and ballet shoes are to go on display this summer at london's Buckingham Palace to mark the 20th anniversary of her death. Many of the objects selected to feature in the display were chosen by Diana's sons Princes William and Harry ‘to reflect their mother's commitment to duty and their personal memories of her’, the Royal Col-

lection Trust said last Friday. Diana, the first wife of heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, was killed in a car crash in Paris in august 1997 and a number of commemorative events have been planned to mark her death. William and Harry attended a private service earlier this month to re-dedicate her grave on what would have been her 56th birthday. The brothers have also commissioned a

statue to be erected in her honour outside their official London home. among the possessions to be featured in the display are a leather photo frame with pictures of family and friends, a burgundy leather briefcase, and her school ‘tuck box’, which she used to keep sweets and other treats in while she was away at boarding school, which has the name ‘D spencer’ written on it. The tribute also includes a case of cas-

sette tapes, featuring albums by artists such as George Michael, Diana Ross and elton John, who famously sang at her funeral. The exhibition opened last saturday and visitors to the palace will also be able to see a collection of more than 200 gifts made to Queen elizabeth during her 65year reign including a paperweight made from a dinosaur bone and a Union Flag badge worn in space by British astronaut Major Tim Peake.

Councillor slams sexist insults by Jemima Roberts ENCARNACION CORTES, Benalmadena’s Councillor for Tourism and Beaches, has publicly condemned a series of degrading and personal comments left on her Facebook page. The pregnant politician has been joined by several feminist groups in expressing her disgust at the criticism she has received, which has included comments about her body shape. Councillor Cortes said she has been called a “bonbon”, an “almond shaped woman,” and “big and fat.” More worryingly, she added another social media user had said “the pregnancy and the heat should shut her up,” while someone else appeared to attack her for having morning sickness, saying he had been a father “three time and I have never had vomiting or cravings.” The politician, who is also responsible for Benalmadena’s Port, has said the comments are purely personal and “use distressing and sexist language to talk about me as a woman, using old-fashioned and bigoted language which degrades me as a woman as enforces sexist stereotypes.” She added, “these comments assault my

Pensioner seriously injured in house fire

A WOMAN, aged 84, has been taken to hospital after receiving burns to 50 per cent of her body in a fire at a house in Malaga. The victim, who has not yet been named, remains in a “very serious” condition, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation at the Malaga Regional Hospital, following the blaze which took place on Calle Jonas, in the heart of the city. The woman was said to have been startled by the fire in the middle of the night after it broke out in her bathroom. As she tried to flee, her clothes caught light and she received second degree burns to the middle of her body. Firefighters from the Malaga fire department got to the woman at around 6am, giving her first aid before she was transferred to hospital. They continued to fight the blaze until 7.30am, when it was extinguished and the house was ventilated. Workers from the National Police and Public Health Emergency Enterprise also attended the scene.

In recent months, two other councillors on the Costa del Sol, Maribel Tocon, the first deputy mayor of Torremolinos, and Angeles Vergara, a spokeswoman for political party Cuidadanos, have also complained of receiving sexist comments on social media. They claimed users had criticised their personal appearance and relationships, leading Tocon to bring a case of hate crime to court.

JOSE ANTONIO VILLENA, a fifty-seven-year-old union representative for a public cleaning company, has died in a motorcycle accident. The man, who was also a member of Spain Communist Party, was killed at around 3pm after apparently losing control of his bike and hitting the central reservation near the San Roque football grounds on the A-7207 road. The emergency services received a call alerting them to the incident, and immediately deployed an air ambulance to transfer Villena to hospital as quickly as possible but he died at the scene. Screwdriver sex attacker Mugging ring brought to justice ‘had a girlfriend’ LOCAL POLICE in Torremolinos have arrested a group of five Spanish and Colombian thieves who had been targeting tourists. The alleged criminals were found with a bag containing several mobile phones and memory cards as well as a wallet. The ring was brought down after police were approached by the owner of a tobacconist on the El Bajondillo promenade who said his shop’s CCTV cameras had caught the five mugging an individual for their mobile. According to media reports, the images showed alleged thieves “keeping watch and monitoring all customers, turning their heads on several occasions to stop people coming and going to the shop.” Four officers looked at the tape and located the victim, a young Austrian tourist, who was staying with family at the Hotel Sol Principe. Police quickly distributed descriptions of the accused to other units and told them where they had been operating. Officers eventually found four of those shown on the tape, along with another person, 300 metres from the tobacconist, near the Los Corales beach. According to police they were “moving hastily” when officers approached them and seized mobile phones they were carrying. After checking the identification codes of the telephones against a database they were sure they had found the ring. Four of the ring were arrested while one, who was heavily pregnant, remained in a health centre.

The police also revealed the man probably committed the attacks after coming from his partner’s home, as well as announcing they caught him after working with the Family and Women’s Unit (UFAM) and Specialised and Violent Crime team (UDEV) to build up a profile of the man. According to police, investigators considered the attacker, who used a screwdriver to threaten his victims before sexually assaulting them, be a “sexual predator,” who was likely to escalate his violence after allegedly trying to force one of the girls into his van. Following detailed physical descriptions from the victims, police have revealed they looked at hundreds of CCTV images from the areas of each of the attacks, eventually finding a van registration number and locating the man. Officers then showed a photograph of the suspect to his four victims, who all positively identified him. The man, whose name has not been released by the police, has since been jailed without bail and will now stay in prison until his trial. Police have revealed he is an electrician and body-builder from a well-known local family, and was previ-

ously denounced in 2009 for allegedly assaulting a disabled woman. The alleged attacker, who is described as having short, dark hair, an athletic build, a tattoo on his arm, and as being between five foot five and five foot seven, assaulted his first victim on May 31 when he is said to have approached a young Spanish girl, following her through the door to a building and then into its lift with her. Once inside he allegedly threatened to kill her before forcing her to take down his trousers. The man fled before carrying out his attack however, after being disturbed by a noise. after a night out with friends. The man tried to make the girl touch him before one of her friends caught her up and started screaming. Reportedly the man did not flee but simply walked casually back to his parked white van. In his final attack, the alleged perpetrator targeted a British girl in her twenties at around dawn as she was leaving work. The man is said to have jumped into the back of the girl’s car as she sat in the driver’s seat, and threatened to kill her with a screwdriver, saying it was not the first time he had murdered someone. The man allegedly forced the British girl to perform several sex acts before leaving in a white van.

The Malaga Medical Union (SMM) has praised the speed with which the attacker was brought to justice and is now demanding the area’s health centres be fitted with CCTV and panic buttons and given security guards. The man, who has also been given a €300 fine and order to pay €250 in compensation, committed the offence in the early hours of Sunday, and was swiftly convicted under Spain’s speedy trial process. The perpetrator is said to have be-

come angry after calling Benalmadena’s home health service complaining he had ingested several litres of beer and other alcohol and was told his case would not be given priority as it was not disease-related. He later turned up at the health centre’s emergency department in person where he was evaluated in triage and told to remain in the waiting room for a doctor. The man then picked up a fire extinguisher and burst into a doctor’s office, spraying both the medical professional and their patient, who was being examined following chest and back pain. Population on the rise again ACCORDING TO the latest set of data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the population of Spain has increased for the first time in six years. As at January 1 2017, the total number on the national census came to exactly 46,528,966 – a rise of 88,867 since January 1 2016 and the first increase since the beginning of 2011. Spanish nationals rose in number by 81,975 between the start and end of 2016, through a combination of returning expats and newborn babies, whilst the foreigner headcount went up by 6,892. As at the start of 2017, a total of 42.1 million residents in Spain were Spanish nationals and 4.4 million were immigrants.

Following an accumulation of waste after the town’s recent children’s festival, the council’s opposition party, Partido Popular (PP), are leaning on the governing PSOE party to clean up the site, which has seen several altercations take place over claiming scrap products, preventing the “appalling image” it gives. Maria Jose Jimenez, a spokesperson for the PP has now presented a motion to create a regulation over the area, which was meant to be a temporary solution but has been in place for two years, a move which has been supported by all other parties. The PP are seeking a permanent collection point which can be better controlled and prevent illegal fly tipping. The dumping ground, which has been in operation since August 2015 and is only meant to operate from 2pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, is located in Torremolinos’ fairground, and receives garden waste, furniture, electrical appliances, and other waste, throughout the week. The council claims, however, the bins are emptied each day and point out two recycling vehicles have been in place since May, collecting paints and solvents, as well as batteries, oils, electrical equipment and ink cartridges.

Online sex predator arrested A 48-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested by Malaga Police for allegedly offering girls €30 for cybersex through Facebook. The man, whose bedroom is said to have been full of toys, remains in custody after allegedly trying to groom a 15-year-old Malaga girl. Police also seized a mobile phone, two memory cards, three hard drives and a tablet from his home, which they are now analysing. National Police officers began their investigation in June after learning the man had tried to contact several underage girls asking them to strip on camera in exchange for mobile phone credit. It is understood the man tried to convince them by claiming some children were earning up to €60 in this way. Allegedly the man tried to obtain the girl’s phone number to start a video call, although she refused. He is then said to have sent her pornography in an attempt to sway her. Officers then traced the alleged perpetrator’s account, tracking him down to La Linea de la Concepcion in Cadiz, where they arrested him. The General Directorate of Police has now reminded parents of the importance of using measures to protect their children from online grooming by using parental controls and teaching children about using the internet responsibly.

Father and son A 19-YEAR-OLD has been arrested after physically assaulting his father outside the provincial police station, Malaga. by Liam Griffin According to investigators, the victim had gone to the station to report that his son was mentally ill, and had abused him several times. Plainclothes policemen witnessed the event as they left the premises. Witnesses state that the accused had thrown a suitcase with “considerable force,” which narrowly missed his father and impacted with a nearby car. When officers intervened, the accused reportedly became increasingly violent and attempted to punch them. the assailant was arrested for harming an officer and resisting arrest. the victim had initially gone to the station to report the accused, but explained that he was unable to do so to his own family. After a change of heart, his son attacked him.

THE NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a Cuban man in Marbella as part of the “Operation Desire” drug trafficking crackdown. The operation has been running since 2014 and has seen the arrest of over one hundred people in connection to drug trafficking in the region. Over the course of the last three years, investigators have seized 100 kilos of marijuana, 350 doses of heroine, 1.5 kilos of cocaine and €250,000 in cash. Following previous arrests, police were able to ascertain the identity of the Cuban citizen, who distributed drugs throughout Marbella and Galicia. The operation has now come to a close as National Police and Guardia Civil investigators have dismantled the three marijuana plantations in Pontevedra, Galicia.

WHEN a young woman in Cañete la Real suffered a number of epileptic fits, an air ambulance was called. The reason for this was that the girl had to be taken to hospital in Malaga – at least one hour’s drive away for treatment but when the helicopter arrived and landed at the local football club, the gates to the pitch were locked. More than 45 minutes were wasted as the authorities tried to find someone with a key to the stadium and in the end, emergency services had to break the lock in order to allow access for the ambulance carrying the girl who had suffered two further fits. The local council will be reviewing the situation of access to the pitch for the future.

According to Rocio Vazquez, a member of the Andalucian Youth Council, young women are at a bigger disadvantage than their male counterparts due to the gender pay gap. She explained “the salary gap has increased in Andalucia, while nationwide figures indicate that although national young male workers earn approximately €100 more than women, in Andalucia the gap has wid-

ened to an average of €130.” Vazquez criticised rising prices within the housing market for contributing to the problem, as some properties within the province take up to 80 per cent of young workers salaries, 20 per cent above the Andalucian average. Vice-president of the association, Victor Reloba, warned that the youth aren’t the only group at risk. “It is a mistake to think that the youth are the only group in danger, with salaries of €800, when €1,400 pensions cannot be paid,” he explained. “If we don’t act now, we are heading to a collapse of the state welfare system,” he concluded.

THE NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a Dutch man, aged 34, in Benalmadena for trafficking large quantities of cocaine and heroin to Belgium. The man, who is orginally from Roodendal in the Netherlands, was captured by Spanish police near his home on the Costa del Sol where he had been living on the run from the Belgian authorities. The accused is alleged to have been part of a criminal organisation importing drugs to a port in Antwerp in containers, according to police. They added the gang had moved the drugs by hacking the computer systems of various tranposrt companies, allowing them to use their containers, and importing at least 2,200 kilograms of cocaine and 1,100 of heroin between November 1 2011 and July 1 2013. Police had arrested several members of the gang in 2011 when they intercepted a container housing 176 kilomgrams of cocaine but until now the thirty-four-year-old had remained at large.

Eastwood set out in 1964, an unknown actor from California, who accepted the proposal of Sergio Leone to shoot A Fistful of Dollars. At the close of the trilogy, his fate had changed. He explained, "after the westerns I made in Spain I suddenly became Clint Eastwood.” Without a doubt, Clint Eastwood is one of the most famous directors and actors in the world. With a wide cinematographic reach, he has become a legendary actor. The thespian’s career and origins are closely linked to Spain, something that journalist Francisco Reyero reveals in his book Eastwood: my name defends me. British pharmacy chain Boots has apologised for its response to a campaign calling for it to cut the price of one of its morning-after pills and said it was looking for cheaper alternatives. Boots was criticised by health campaigners and lawmakers after refusing to cut the cost of the emergency contraception pill, saying it could be accused of ‘incentivising inappropriate use’. the British pregnancy advisory service (Bpas) campaigned for Boots to cut the price of the Levonelle morning-after pill, saying it was more expensive in Britain than other parts of Europe. Bpas’s campaign was backed by lawmakers from Britain's opposition Labour party. World’s oldest captive manatee dies in accident at Florida aquarium Snooty, the world’s oldest known manatee in captivity, has died in an accident at a Florida aquarium just days after his 69th birthday, officials said last Sunday. the giant marine mammal was found dead at Bradenton's South Florida Museum early on Sunday. Initial signs were that Snooty swam into a normally closed underwater area housing plumbing for the manatee exhibit and was unable to get out, the museum said in a statement. ‘our initial investigation indicates that Snooty’s death was a heartbreaking accident and we’re all quite devastated about his passing,’ Brynne Anne Besio, the museum’s chief executive, said in a statement. three manatees in the exhibit who are being rehabilitated for a return to the wild were unharmed. the museum said it would carry out a full investigation and a necroscopy would be performed. Snooty was born in a Miami aquarium on July 21, 1948, and moved to Bradenton, a tampa suburb, in 1949. he became the official mascot of Manatee County in 1979 and had more than a million visitors, the statement said. About 5,000 people attended a birthday celebration for Snooty on Saturday, museum officials said. West Indian manatees, also known as sea cows, were taken off U.S. Interior Department's list of endangered species in March. Manatees are native to the Florida coastline and their numbers have soared because of decades of conservation efforts.

Swedish train will be named ‘Trainy McTrainface’ by Tahnee Wright A SwediSh rail operator has vowed to name one of its trains ‘Trainy McTrainface’ after a public vote, saying it would bring joy to people disappointed when Britain rejected the name Boaty McBoatface for a polar research ship following a similar poll. Trainy McTrainface won 49 per cent of the votes in the naming competition, conducted online by train operator MTR express and Swedish newspaper Metro, beating choices such as hakan, Miriam and Poseidon. ‘(This is) news that will be received with joy by many, not just in Sweden,’ MTR wrote in a statement. The train will run between the Swedish capital Stockholm and the country's second-biggest city Gothenburg. Last year, the British government said a new £200 million (€223 million) polar research ship would be named after veteran BBC naturalist david Attenborough even though the name ‘Boaty McBoatface’ had topped an online poll. The instigator of the Boaty name later apologised for his suggestion, which won more than 124,000 votes. As a consolatory gesture, the research ship's remotely operated undersea vehicle, designed to collect samples from the deep waters of the Arctic and Antarctic, will be named Boaty McBoatface, the government said.

Balearic Islands vote for bloodless bullfights The Balearic islands voted on Monday to pass a law that forbids both the death of the bull or any bloodshed in bullfights. a traditional bullfight sees six bulls killed in a bullring by being stabbed by a matador's sword through the back, after the animals have previously been weakened in a ritual which sees them first stabbed in the shoulders by a picador's lance and then to have six short spears (‘bandelleras’) stuck into their back. The new law forbids the bull's death in the bullring, as well as any physical or psychological damage, forbidding the use of ‘bandelleras, lances, knives or swords,’ while limiting the time a bull is in the ring to a maximum of ten minutes after which ‘it will be returned to the corral.’ Under the Balearics new law, the bull will be submitted for a medical check-up after the fight and then returned to the ranch from where it was raised. The new law was passed with the approval of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), left wing party Podemos and regional party Mes Mallorca, but was opposed by the right-wing People's Party and centre-right formation Ciudadanos. The minimum age for attending a bullfight was also raised from 16 to 18 under the new law. Bullfighting has already been banned completely in the Catalan region in northeast Spain and in the Canary Islands and is generally seen as losing popularity among the younger generation of Spaniards. Nevertheless, it is still the subject of bitter debate among those who view it as a Spanish cultural tradition and those who consider it a cruel aberration which has no place in a modern nation.

Ryanair in celebratory give-away POPULAR LOw-cOst airline Ryanair has celebrated its excellent first quarter sales figures with an offer of 500,000 highly reduced tickets. However, there was only a short window of opportunity to register interest which has now passed and also limited the period of travel to between september 2017 and January 2018. some of the flights on offer were from as little as €14.99 and unlike the fake promotion that allegedly celebrated their 35th anniversary last year, was completely genuine. Dublin, Edinburgh and London are just a few European destinations where Ryanair flies to from spain and local airports san Javier and Alicante-Elche are among the busiest. the latter is home to one of the company’s bases. the give-away has been as a result of a net profit of €397m in the first financial quarter which ended on June 30. this is 55% more than the similar period in 2016 when it registered €256m. In the same three-month period from April to June, the Irish airline increased its overall revenue by 13% to €1.910bn compared to €1.687bn last year. chief Executive Officer of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary celebrated the increase in this quarter’s profit but warned that the figures had been distorted due to Easter coming earlier this year in March. He also noted that fares increased minimally by around 1% which offset the dropping value of the pound, declines in the amount of baggage being carried and the effect of recent bombing outrages in London and Manchester. Passenger numbers are also up compared to the same three-month period in 2016 with 35 million travellers and increase of 12%.

Hundreds of sheep killed in 650-foot plunge to death by Staff Reporter A brown bear is believed to have chased more than 200 sheep off a cliff in the Pyrenees near the border between France and Spain. 209 sheep were found dead at the foot of the cliff near the Spanish village of Lladorre. The sheep belonged to a farmer in Couflens, France. The incident happened last weekend when the bear attacked one of the sheep, sending the entire flock into a panicked frenzy, plunging off the 650-foot (200 metre) cliff in an attempt to flee the predator. Farmers have been incensed by the news, renewing the debate over the reintroduction of bears to the Pyrenees. The French government said it’ll compensate the farmer, but the local branch of the French farmers’ federation, the Confederation Paysanne de l’Ariege, is thoroughly unimpressed. ‘Pastoralism - which protects biodiversity and keeps the mountains alive - is not compatible with the reintroduction of large predators,’ it said in a statement.

‘The state, which is responsible for the reintroduction of the bears, should remove the ones that are causing problems and should not reintroduce any more bears,’ it added. brown bears were all but wiped out by hunters in the Pyrenees in the 1990s and the French government has been trying to reintroduce the animals to the region since 1996-97 when two females and a male were brought from Slovenia. There are now believed to be 35 brown bears calling this picturesque mountainous region their home. Despite protective efforts, around 300 sheep are killed each year from bear attacks, according to France’s office of Hunting and wildlife. For context, of the half a million-sheep living in the Pyrenees, about 15,000 die each year from natural causes such as disease, bad weather and falls. Sheep are also preyed upon by dogs, who may be responsible for many more sheep deaths than bears. Last year, a similar incident occurred in the Pyrenees, resulting in the death of 130 sheep.

Renfe train strike

ANY plANs to travel by train today (Friday) using the services of RENFE will be best put on hold for another time. The spanish train company has cancelled 274 services between midnight and 11.00pm due to the strike called by members of the OGT trade union. However, there will be trains running on all routes but with severe disruptions and delays especially with the usual weekend getaways. It’s planned to have 77% of trains running on the AVE and other long distance routes accounting for 277 trains. At a regional level, fewer trains – 365 or 65% of the usual total – will run. For the vital rush hour, 75% of local trains will operate with that figure dropping to around 50% during the rest of the day. Freight trains will be those most affected with only a 20% skeleton service running. Hopes for HIV cure revived by South African child

A South AfricAn child born with hiV has surprised experts by appearing to be effectively cured of the AIDS virus after just a year of treatment followed by eight and a half years drug-free. Patients with HIV would normally need to stay on antiretroviral (ART) drugs for the rest of their lives to keep AIDS at bay. But this child, still off treatment and now almost 10 years old, has no signs of the disease. This and other recent, isolated cases of remission have given additional hope to the 37 million people worldwide infected with the virus that causes AIDS. Yet experts urged caution, saying the case is extremely rare and does not suggest a simple path to a cure. ‘It's a case that raises more questions than it necessarily answers,’ said Linda-Gail Bekker, president of the International AIDS Society (IAS). The child was part of a clinical trial in which researchers were investigating the effect of treating HIV-positive babies in the first few weeks of life, and then stopping and starting the ART medicines whilst checking whether their HIV was being controlled. The United Nations HIV/AIDS agency said last week that 19.5 million people - more than half of the 37 million patients with HIV - are now on treatment. The baby contracted HIV from its mother. Treatment with ART started when it was almost nine weeks old but was interrupted at 40 weeks when the virus had been suppressed, and the child was monitored regularly for any signs of relapse. ‘At age 9.5 years, the child was clinically asymptomatic,’ the researchers said. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has killed around 35 million people worldwide since it began in the 1980s.

Europe at the crossroads UNDER THE baleful influence of Wall Street and Washington, Europe once again stands at the crossroads of history. A recurring theme, our small continent has faced an uncertain future several times during the last 100 years. Never mind what we are told by the victors; at Yalta in February 1945, the war to ‘defend our freedoms’ delivered 22 nations to Joe Stalin’s tyrannical USSR. These nations occupation was to drag on for a further 45 years. Ironically, one of these betrayed nations was Poland whose occupation started the war. In 1949 the guilty parties suggested that we join hands under the protective umbrella of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Since then, an estimated 35 million people have been martyred to NATO ambitions. The USSR, drooled over as allies, in 1955 formed their rival Warsaw Pact. Governed from Moscow both the Warsaw Pact and the Eastern Bloc collapsed in 1990. Today, the European Union’s governing, banking, media, foreign policy and defence requirements are governed by Wall Street, Washington DC and the Pentagon’s talking heads. Hair today gone tomorrow WHEN I was a kid, I was blessed with a mop of almost white blond hair. I say blessed, but as a young boy growing up in the 50’s, hair was not something you thought that much about, until the time came around when Mum sent me off to Fred Lester the local barber, for a harsh trim. The attention from female neighbours was certainly not welcome when they would comment to my Mum on those white golden locks, and my cheeks would flush with embarrassment. If it became just a little too long and a visit to the barber shop was overdue, the unfortunate effect was that it would start to curl making the situation worse and attracting comments likening me to the Hollywood child star, Shirley Temple. Luckily the order of the day was short back and sides. Then the Swingin’ Sixties rolled around and long hair became fashionable. Problem for me was the curly question. All the pop idols of the day from the Stones to the inappropriately named Pretty Things, sported outrageously long hair. Even the Beatles, whose hairstyles look fairly moderate today, had styles that were regarded as long by previous standards. But the one thing they all had in common was straight hair, and I was constantly looking for ways to take the kinks out of my own unruly barnet. I wanted to look like John Lennon or Keith Richards, not Louise XIV.

Then in the seventies I came into my own and for some reason curls were in and became part of the glam rock boom. Hey, if it was good enough for the likes of Marc Bolan and Robert Plant, then it was good enough for me. Out of sight man. I was hip and I was cooool! Today, even though my body takes five hour lunch breaks, and I cannot remember where I put my underpants (oh, I’ve got them on), I am pleased to report that my hair is intact, and the envy of my contemporaries. Okay, there’s almost as much in my nostrils and ears these days, but you can’t have it all. I recently located a follically impaired buddy from my 70’s days through the magic of Facebook, and he was delighted to have re-connected, even though in his words: ‘You spent the seventies looking like a yak’s backside’. Envy. Such an unattractive trait in a person I always think.

I arrIved in Berlin in January 1960 at the height of winter, as a young journalist this was to be my home for the next couple of years. The following day I was introduced to a man who was going to shape my life, his name was ernesto Krieg originally a son of a German diplomat who had retired from his post in Caracas, venezuela, and stayed on as a business representative for a German company, however he died in the late fifties, ernesto was born in 1925 and spent all his informative life in Caracas. When we met on a bitterly cold day in Berlin, he shook my hand welcoming me in the typical German formal way by calling me Herr Mann, however he soon dropped the formality and we became good friends using first name’s. It was a known fact that journalists are quite free to roam almost anywhere with the right type of credentials and a bit of nous, many had either been inducted by their countries so called secret Government organisations to spy or provide information, in several cases many journalists had even volunteered, the man that arranged my time in Berlin was a Major (I cannot use his name even though he is dead) son of a former Hungarian immigrant who managed a Press agency in London’s Fleet street in the 1950s the home of the British Newspapers and Press agencies. Within a few days and several meetings with officers from the French, american and British representatives and putting me through certain instructions, and how I could use my excellent knowledge of cameras, one in particular that I had made was miniature camera that was hidden in a hollowed out book with a tiny hole for the lens, and also my knowledge of electrical technology, ernesto and myself started to go to work. ernesto hated his German ancestry, his great love was venezuela, its life style, its people, so probing the infrastructure in eastern Berlin and east Germany was like manner from heaven for him. Within days of my instructors putting me through rigorous training, we started to make daily journey’s through Check Point Charlie, our papers were checked by the american authority’s on the West side, the barrier was lifted and we negotiated our way through tank traps into no man’s land, we parked the car within the russian/east German sector and walked into the large hut, escorted by two volks Politzie or vo Po’s as they were called, showing our credentials and body searched, if we were lucky we could continue, however sometimes to make our crossing difficult we would be grilled and searched again and again. Once you were free to go, we drove in a zig zag again through the russian tank traps, a barrier was finally lifted and we could eventually cross into east Berlin, with a sigh of relief. during our forays into east Berlin and east Germany sometimes as far as Leipzig, we could meet friends and contacts made by various methods, there was not any internet or mobile phones, the people we would see could be helpful to the West, we could also see at first hand the preparations for escape routes for people who had particularly good knowledge of russian armaments and rocket science. all this just two years before Nikita Khrushchev, launched his ships laden with missiles heading for

Cuba, causing the world to be within days of an all-out war between america and russia. So that’s all I can say on the subject of the years ernesto and myself had spent delving and prying into what went on behind the barbed wire, until the wall was finally built by the east Germans to keep their people entombed, but it still allowed us to continue our visits through Check Point Charlie. My great friend ernesto would be turning in his grave if he knew what was going on in his beloved venezuela, at this present time if ever a county had imploded into chaos murder and financial ruin venezuela has, particularly the capital. Caracas is now packed with tanks, armoured personal carriers, thousands of soldiers and police with guns roam the streets, the shop counters are empty, and the street are covered in blood. When the late Hugo Chavez took power in 1999, the country was awash with oil when the charge was $100 dollars a barrel, with the largest proven oil reserves in the world, an investor’s dream, the country has some of the finest beaches and the wonderful snow-capped andes. Hugo Chavez reign brought wealth to venezuela, more schools for children, greater access to drinking water and plenty of food in the shops, people said that the country was a paradise, a complete utopia, but his leftish politics became a major thorn in the side of america. Now Nicholas Maduro the president of venezuela has driven venezuela in the opposite direction, with a huge shortage of food in the supermarkets, shortage of medicines, rolling blackouts, rising unemployment, increased violence in the streets, even malaria once almost eradicated is back. The IMF says that venezuela has a negative growth of (-8%) and an inflation rate of (48%) unemployment is expected to climb

to (30%) all this has cast a shadow of desperation the spread of unrest and a surge in criminality. after months of rioting venezuela is heading to the brink, this has worried neighbouring countries, his once opposition Henrique Capriles has been banned from running for any political office for 15 years. The new opposition leader is Freddy Guevara who has called for further 24 hour strikes, while hundreds have been killed in the demonstration. anti-Government lawyers accuse Maduro of being responsible for drug running and emptying the government coffers, and stealing the gold reserves. In 2011 venezuela had $30b reserves now they have less than $10b, and their imports are down 50%. The oil production has ceased to a trickle owing to strikes. With rising prices, many people unable to eat and the millions that are demonstrating on the streets, the once great country of venezuela is a paradise lost?

By Michael Cano She will officially open the Fair at 11.50pm on August 10, enjoy the fireworks and then appear with her band Chambao at 12.20am. With different musicians but always using the name Chambao (a kind of open sided tent) she has released eight albums as well as a number of DVDs and has been nominated for a number of Latin Grammy awards. Her music is a gentle style of New Flamenco mixed with Soft Rock and Electronic music and deals with a number of matters which affect her life and the world at large. Her latest band is very Latin orientated and she is touring her Nuevo Ciclo (New Cycle) album which incorporates Flamenco, Rock, Rap and Classical music which she describes as being a natural progression for her as the music itself is “organic, actual and very much live”. Although she has performed around the world, she always loves returning to Malaga her hometown and to play to a local audience is exciting for her especially as she has fought off the ravages of breast cancer which left her devastated

when first diagnosed. She thanks her family, friends, original band and her “darling dog” who was with her all through the treatment period and she now has a different outlook on a life which has been given back to her. As well as publishing a book on her experiences, she has also donated her royalties from Cuba to a Cuban Breast Cancer charity. As well as having her own band, La Mari is in constant demand to duet with other singers and speaks warmly of working with Ricky Martin who she says is a consummate professional. Other big names she has performed with include Rosario, Vanessa Martin, Macaco and Bebe. This fine performer loves to play in the open air and in a previous interview just prior to last year’s Fuengirola appearance she said “there is nothing better than enjoying the balmy summer atmosphere and sensing the audience’s mood which in turn inspires me to give my best performance.”

Reggae time THE FESTIVAL, Estepona Summer Party 2017, will this year offer up a concert by La Negra Mayte and reggae music, it has been announced. The free event, which takes place today and tomorrow on La escollera beach, next to the Punta Doncella lighthouse, will tonight host an evening of flamenco rock from 9.30pm, starting with an acrobatic dance show. from 11pm, La Negra Mayte will host a night of soul, swing and funk, entitled III Spetto fest, while tomorrow night reggae fans will enjoy live music from Barbados-based band, Magnet Man, who are stopping in estepona to perfrom songs from their acclaimed album, ragga rock. The event, which kicks off at 9.30pm, will also see Danish singer-songwriter Jens Mallins, the “Reggae Viking” perform, alongside backing by Ubuntu reggae, and Don Spider & G.I.B. Healthy ways to avoid a caesarean section EnCOuragIng hEalthy eating and physical activity during pregnancy limits excess weight gain and lowers the odds of having a caesarean section, finds a study published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ). the benefits are consistent, regardless of a woman’s age, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI) and underlying medical conditions, suggesting that all women should be given advice on diet and lifestyle as part of routine antenatal care. Both maternal obesity and excessive weight gain in pregnancy (gestational weight gain) put mother and infant at risk, both in pregnancy and in later life, with considerable costs to the health service and society. interventions based on diet or physical activity, or both, in pregnancy minimise gestational weight gain, and therefore may have a role in preventing adverse pregnancy outcomes. So researchers from the International Weight Management in Pregnancy (i-WIP) Collaborative group set out to assess the effects of diet and physical activity based interventions in pregnancy on weight gain and outcomes such as caesarean section, stillbirth and admission to a newborn intensive care unit. Interventions included access to a dietician, specific antenatal classes for advice on diet and lifestyle, or structured exercise of moderate intensity such as aerobics or using a cycling machine. the research team analysed individual participant data from 36 randomised trials involving over 12,500 women, grouped according to age, pregnancy history, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), and underlying medical conditions. Overall, the trials had a low risk of bias.

Diet and physical activity based interventions consistently reduced gestational weight gain, regardless of age, pregnancy history, ethnicity, BMI, and existing medical conditions, and remained when studies at high risk of bias were excluded. interventions also lowered the odds of caesarean section, but had no effect on offspring outcomes, such as stillbirth or admission to an intensive care unit. When they included additional study-level data, they found additional benefit for gestational diabetes. the authors outline some study limitations, including the fact that participants were mostly white and of medium to high education status, a factor favouring compliance with interventions. nevertheless, they say their analysis “confirms that diet and physical activity based interventions in pregnancy reduce gestational weight gain.” and they say discussions about diet and physical activity in pregnancy, which are delivered as part of antenatal care, “should incorporate specific estimates

Is all petrol and diesel the same? IT´S A common question that often triggers big arguments. Is branded petrol and diesel better than supermarket fuel, or should you just buy the cheapest you can find? The problem is that most people don’t know how the fuel business works, and the truth is a well-kept trade secret. Premium fuels, such as Shell V-Power Nitro+ and BP Ultimate, are not the same as regular petrol or diesel , although you can mix them freely with standard fuels without problems. Petrol like this is known as ‘super unleaded’. Confusingly, the petrol that is labelled as ‘premium unleaded’ on forecourt pumps is actually standard petrol. When it comes to fuel, super is better than premium!

These ‘super unleaded’ fuels cost several pence per litre more than regular unleaded. For this extra money, you get a different, more sophisticated package of additives for cleaning and lubrication, and fuel with a higher octane rating. It’s a similar story with ‘super’ diesels, like BP Ultimate Diesel. Octane (petrol) and cetane (diesel) ratings describe the way a fuel burns inside an engine. Broadly speaking, a higher rating means a fuel will burn more efficiently and effectively inside your engine. This may improve performance and/or economy slightly – although not all drivers will see a noticeable difference. All fuels sold in the UK conform to the relevant British Standards. This means that they should all work in roughly the same way and you can mix them freely in your car’s fuel tank. The standard petrol and diesel that’s sold on garage forecourts is mixture of two things – Base fuel and an additives package. The base fuel is the same for all companies – in fact, it usually comes from the same tanks at the local fuel refinery/distribution centre. What varies is the additives package that goes into the fuel. These additives packages are secret recipes of extra ingredients that help keep the engine clean and improve lubrication inside the engine cylinders. Each fuel company has its own additives packages and these are different. So it is possible (but not common) for some drivers to feel that their car responds better to the additives used by one fuel manufacturer over those of another.

England hockey boss in health scare DANNY KERRY, the man who masterminded the Great Britain women’s gold medal winning performance at the 2016 Rio Olympics has suffered a heart attack. In news that has only just been made public in a statement by England Hockey, the 46-yearold was taken ill on July 15 during the recent World League Semi-Final being played in South Africa. Mr Kerry still continues to receive treatment in a Johannesburg hospital and is shortly due to fly back to England “for a further period of rest and recovery” and expected to return to work in September. During his absence, the England team took bronze medal place after a 5-2 victory over Argentina at the weekend. “Danny’s health has remained our sole and absolute priority,” said England Hockey performance director Ed Barney. “We wish him the very best over the coming weeks as he continues his recovery.” Kerry expressed his “huge thanks and debt of gratitude” to the doctors who treated him in South Africa, and to England team doctor Cath Lester.
