MIJAS council have launched the ‘This summer, do not burn yourself’ prevention campaign to improve knowledge and attitudes towards sun protection. Jose Antonio Gonzalez, Malaga Councillor for the beaches, explained that leaflets in four different languages will be distributed across the beaches throughout the rest of summer. The leaflets will warn sunbathers of the danger posed by over exposure to the sun and how to prevent the damage caused by UV rays. Gomez announced that “20,000 leaflets, written in Spanish, English, German and Danish, are going to be distributed in areas highly populated by tourists.” The initiative aims to reduce the amount of skin cancer cases after a study in 2014 revealed that the disease is more prevalent along the Costa del Sol than anywhere else in Spain. “We are talking about a disease that is detected in almost five thousand new cases per year in our country, so this type of campaign is essential in municipalities like ours,” explained Gomez.

Walking on water ESTEPONA’S new wastewater treatment plant is finally operational following four years of delays. The Guadalmansa sewage works will serve 400,000 people, also covering Marbella, Benahavis and Istan, tripling the volume of residual water that can be processed on a daily basis. Spain’s Minister of Agriculture, Fishers, Food and Environment, Isabel Garcia Tejerina, was on hand to open the plant, which has been completed using a €35 million cash injection from the national government and Junta de Andalucia. The long-awaited infrastructure will now contribute to solving the Costa del Sol’s wastewater issues, although 17 municipalities continue to dump raw sewage into rivers or the sea, in particular Alhaurin el Grande, Coin and Nerja.

DOMESTIC abuse victims on the Costa del Sol are set to receive additional help after Velez Malaga’s Council launched a counselling programme. The scheme, which will involve five psychologists from the town’s Social Intervention and Family Treatment services, aims to allow women to regain control of their lives. They will receive between three and six counselling sessions at the Municipal Women’s Information Centre (CMIM), depending on the severity of their condition. Zoila Martin, Councillor for Equality, said "at the CMIM we find a high number of women who require psychological intervention, who especially need immediate attention in a time of crisis, to alleviate as far as possible the effects of, and decrease the scale of, the damage.” Councillor Martin added, “this is something that can be overcome given the right care which alleviates victims’ suffering, attends to their basic needs, helps their physical and emotional recovery and brings them into contact with a support network so they can resume their normal daily life.”

Fuengirola’s got talent OSCAR COELLO, a hairdresser from Fuengirola, has won a national contest organised by Sebastian hair products. The man, who is owner of the CoelloCasado salon, saw off around fifty other contenders to win the opportunity to become part of the Sebastian’s national artistic team for the next year. Coello, who is from Cadiz but trained in London, commented, “our salon is directly focused on fashion. We don’t just cut your hair here, we provide an integral treatment,” adding, “that’s exactly what I’ll be doing for the next twelve months, which I really like.” The contest, which is in its first year, saw entrants from all over Spain compete for the prize. Only ten made it through to the grand final in Madrid, in which the finalists used metallic elements in their hair designs. More than three hundred hairdressers attended the event in which a jury made up of Sebastian’s artistic team judged the finalists’ work. Lourdes Marroqui, director of the brand’s education section, said the competition had been “spectacular.”

Crackdown on noise pollution Council workers discuss the scheme’s details
by Jemima Roberts RINCON DE LA VICTORIA’S Council is set to impose a series of measures to control noise pollution. The legislation proposes creating almost one hundred “sensitive acoustic zones” where noise and thermal vibrations would be monitored and regulated. The scheme, which has the support of hotels and businesses, aims to protect the health and rights of residents, as well as improving the
town. The bill establishes a detailed classification of public spaces according to their use. The areas will then be divided into protected zones, acoustically saturated zones, quiet zones and zones of acoustic conflict. Amplifiers, TVs, videos and radios will not be allowed on terraces or shop façades except with special authorisation. However public musical performances will not be subject to authorisation as long as they do not harm the public.
Under the new law food and drink will no longer be served after 2am and firecrackers and fireworks will be prohibited outside of authorised zones. Pet owners will also be required to take “necessary measures” to prevent their animal causing disruption to the community. If they are unable to do so and complaints are received from other residents, a series of sanctions will be in place. Fines for infringing on the new rules range from €1000 for minor offences, to €30,000 for very serious infractions.

€500,000 bill for empty museum TORREMOLINOS Council’s empty building on Plaza Picassa is costing over half a million euros a year in loan repayments it has emerged. Politicians from the governing PSOE party have now proposed using the site, which was initially intended to be a museum, to temporarily house the town’s courts. Politicians from the Partido Popular (PP) and Ciudadanos oppose the PSOE’s plans, saying the building should be used for its original cultural purpose and claiming it could cost up to €2 million to convert the site for a new purpose. Members of the PP protested the move by refusing to attend to the council session to pass the proposal, leading Mayor Jose Ortiz to use his powers to enforce his plan. The building, which continues to be a source of aggravation to the council, which is in €180 million of debt, was due to open in May 2015. The council has until 2024 to pay off the remainder of the loan for the building, costing €513,000 a year.

Containers are used for old textiles
by Staff Reporter THE RESIDENTS of Rincon de la Victoria have so far this year donated 37 tons of used clothing across 12 Humana containers. The amount of fabric collected means 118 tons of CO2 emissions have been saved from going into the atmosphere, helping the environment.
Through the initiative, residents can deposit clothing, footwear, accessories and home textiles they no longer use. The free collection service also "allows us to save significant amounts of money on the cost of collecting waste,” according to Rincon de la Victoria’s Mayor, Francisco Salado. He praised "the commitment of locals to helping the environment and
the charity, which carries out important social development work in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Spain.” Rincon de la Victoria has maintained an agreement with the Humana Foundation to collect used clothes since January 2004. The charity, which has been going since 1987, promotes the protection of the environment through the recycling of used textiles.
Meals on wheels
CHARITY Emmaus has delivered three meals a day to an average of 40 people in Torremolinos since it took over the town’s food aid service in January 2016. The contract to provide the meals was due to expire in December last year but has now been extended to December 2017. The charity provides breakfast, lunch and dinner every day for those aged over 65, people with reduced mobility or those facing temporary difficult circumstances. Emmaus, which collaborates with the Council’s Social Services Department to provide the service, is said to be managing it well, with more than eighty-five per cent of users expressing their satisfaction. More than fifty per cent of meal recipients also said their health had improved since using the service. Pedro Perez, Councillor for Social Services, said, "The in-home food service allows elderly people who have little independence or are on a low income to remain in their own home and normal lifestyle for as long as possible with the security of heaving healthy, balanced and varied food.” A spokesperson from Emmaus added “the service also helps to prevent accidents that could result from users handling and preparing their own food.” Torremolinos’ food services also extend to the young, with children at risk of social alienation also fed through the council’s Food Guarantee Plan.
€90,000 study to improve beaches FIVE companies are contributing thousands of Euros to a study by Malaga University into the cause of large slicks appearing on the coastline across the Costa del Sol. The problem, which was previously believed to be caused by red algae, has already seen one beach in Rincon de la Victoria temporarily closed and a €46.5 million fine over the potential risks to human and marine health. The slick, which affects beaches in Estepona, Nerja, Alharuin el Grande, Coin and San Pedro Alcantara, has seen politicians, conservation groups and fishermen debate over its possible cause and solution. Companies Emasa, Acosol and Axaragua, Hydralia and Aguas de Torremolinos are now stepping in to fund a study, paying between €9,900 and €21,000 each. Manuel Cardena, CEO of Acosol, explained although the flotsam was initially believed to have been algae, “studies in Axarquia have shown a large proportion of it is made of something else and that the solid element of it is made almost exclusively from minerals such as kaolinite and ilite, along with detrital minerals such as quartz and calcite or halite.” Meanwhile an existing study has showed any existing algae multiplies more easily in areas where sewage is present, including in Nerja where untreated waste is pumped out to sea.

Government questioned over sewage works by Sally Underwood POLITICIANS from parties PSOE and Ciudadanos have demanded answers from Spain’s Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, over Nerja’s sewage treatment plant. The news comes after the company in charge of completing the works, Isolux-Cosan-Corviam, declared bankruptcy, leaving the plant ninety-five per cent complete but the main pumping station not yet started. Nerja, which is the only large resort in Malaga Province to allow untreated sewage to be pumped out to sea, now faces another summer without a treatment plant, posing a risk to both human and marine health. MEPs Miguel Angel Heredia and Guillermo Diaz have contacted the premier criticising the latest delays to the works, with Heredia stating, "the Rajoy government promised that this treatment plant would be fully operational in June 2016, and not only was it not, but now we are back to square one after the company’s bankruptcy.” Diaz said he wanted answers “once and for all,” asking what the “plan B” is, “claiming, “if the government does not have one it will cause serious consequences,” adding, “the only thing visitors and residents of Nerja know for certain is that the works have stopped and the sea remains filthy.” The sewage problem is just the latest for Nerja, which in March suffered a burst pipe 400 metres off Burriana Beach, expelling raw waste into the water, causing a “geyser” of sewage to appear. The underwater plant is now around 30 years old and said to be in bad condition. Nerja’s Council has invested €100,000 to fix the leaky pipe and workers managed to fix the original hole, measuring around 20 centimetres squared. However, they were alarmed to find another, much larger leak around 100 metres away. Attempts to repair the further damage were hampered by storms but have now been completed. Waste is normally expelled 1,500 metres out to sea and
broken down by the action of waves but the leak has caused sewage to be expelled much closer to the shore with Nerja’s

New speed camera DRIVERS will soon notice a new speed camera at kilometre 11.1 of the Mijas to Coin road after installation works began this week. The camera, which is on the A-7053, will see traffic limited to 50 kilometres per hour, and will be signposted “so that drivers are informed of the restriction and adapt their driving accordingly.” The road, which connects the Guadalhorce Valley with the Costa del Sol, runs through Mijas and Alhaurin el Grande. The highway, which hosts around 9,000 drivers a day, received a €15.6 million facelift, paid for by the Ministry for Public Works and the Junta de Andalucia, in 2011 when 8.8 kilometres of it were widened to 10 metres. Several braking areas were also added and a bridge over the Arroyo Pilones was extended.

€10,000 water bill hits families
by Sally Underwood ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-THREE families in Benajarafe’s La Esperanza urbanisation face their water supply being cut off after refusing to pay a €45,000 bill. The private estate, which is sixty years old, receives a monthly water bill of around €10,000, over four times higher than elsewhere in the municipality of Velez Malaga. Residents say the exorbitant rates are due to the poor condition of their water network, with up to seventy-five per cent of water being lost to leaks and illegal connections. They claim Aqualia refuse to pay
for the necessary repair work because the community is privately owned, leaving residents to pick up the bill. Locals say they have asked the council for permission to carry out only the essential works, which would cost residents around €60,000, but were refused. The say the council has instead insisted the whole network must be replaced, costing between €2.5 million and €3 million. The dispute has led to an impasse, with residents refusing to pay the full amount of their bills, owing Aqualia €38,000 of a €45,000 bill and risking having their water cut off again, as it was for five days in June and for three months in 2011.
For its part, the council says because the urbanisation is “private” it should cover the costs of the work “entirely,” while Aqualia claims it has been working to resolve the problem, “proposing various solutions and even offering to finance the works.” The company further claims of the €58,300 billed since July 2016, only €13,296 has been paid, “which means in almost a year each family paid less than €10 per month.” The community’s residents feel their rights are being violated however, with one, who wished to remain anonymous, telling a media outlet, “these residents pay the same IBI and waste rates as everyone else in Velez Malaga but we do not have the same rights.”
Terror victim remembered FUENGIROLA’S Council has held a minute’s silence to remember the 20th anniversary of the killing of Councillor Miguel Angel Blanco by ETA, as well as all victims of terrorism. Blanco was a Partido Popular councillor in Ermua, in the north of Spain, when he was kidnapped on July 10 1997. The separatist terrorist organisation gave the Spanish Government 48 hours to transfer all ETA prisoners to jails in the Basque Country, sparking demonstrations all over Spain. The government did not give in, however, and ETA shot Blanco in the back of the head 50 minutes after the deadline passed before leaving him on the streets of San Sebastian. He died in hospital shortly after. Fuengirola joined thousands of cities throughout Spain commemorating the date at noon in the town’s Plaza del España. A special church service to remember Blanco and other victims was held in the Carmen del Parque church and a large blue ribbon was hung outside the town hall. Abel Caballero, President of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), explaining the event remembered, "twenty years of a terror, but also twenty years of exemplary and democratic citizen support and gives us the chance to say resoundingly and unanimously ‘we have come so far.’ This civic response was responsible for first isolating and then absolutely defeating ETA.” He added the event was, "a heartfelt and sincere commemoration of Miguel Angel, of all victims and their families and friends, but also, at the same time, a recognition of and homage to Spanish society.”
Prison for three kidnappers by Jemima Roberts Three people have been jailed without bail for kidnapping two young men in Velez Malaga. The victims, aged 23 and 29, were treated in hospital following their ordeal and police are now investigating whether they were tortured. The men had been held hostage in a house in the municipality’s Cabrillas area after a drugs dispute turned sour. Concerned relatives called the police after the pair went missing, and officers quickly identified one of the kidnappers, a Moroccan man, before arresting the other two alleged perpetrators the next morning in the Velez Malaga wholesale market. The men reportedly resisted the police, causing minor injuries to several officers. Agents from the National Police and Special Operational Security Group (GOES) were then led to the house were the victims were being held and secured their release. The officers also searched the car of one of the victim’s for drugs but found none.

Council intervenes to halt eviction MIJAS Council has stepped in to provisionally help a family keep their home in Las Lagunas after they were threatened with eviction for non-payment of rent. A spokesperson for the council confirmed, “Mijas Council continues to work to help this family and any others who may be in a similar situation.” According to the town hall, “all kinds of help” have been given to the family since 2006 through both the Social Services Department and welfare payments. They added the family “have received several different types of aid from the council, including basic supplies and food stamps.” The town hall also confirmed €1,200 had been given to them in April to either negotiate with their landlord or find somewhere else to live. According to the council, “it total this residents has received 86 different forms of help, on top of the personal support provided by social workers and educators and our psychologist. The department has also helped with the resident’s disability and put in place all necessary procedures so they are given a non-contributory pension.”
17 arrested at beach festival OFFICERS from the national and local police forces have arrested more than a dozen people at Torremolinos’ Los Alamos Beach Festival. Those detained, eight of whom were accused of drug dealing, have now been handed over to Court of Instruction. Another eight were arrested for theft and one for a knife offence. During the course of the four-day event, 78 National Police officers were on hand to ensure the safety of those attending. Offiers intervened in 144 cases of drug possession and seized €300 in cash, as well as 12.6 grams of cocaine, 49.9 grams of MDMA, 463,7 grams of marijuana, 4.9 grams of speed, 18.6 grams of ketamine and 10.5 of methamphetamine. The festival, which ran from last Thursday to Sunday, is an outdoor event in its third year, which attracts around 20,000 techno and house music fans.

Money argument fuelled murder by Jemima Roberts PIERO, a thirty-five-year-old man accused of killing his mother in Velez-Malaga last week, is believed to have argued with her over money. The man, who explained he was “out of his mind,” was also believed to have been in withdrawal from a drug addiction, and has now been jailed without bail awaiting trial. At his hearing Piero, a fisherman in Caleta de Velez, expressed remorse for killing his sixtythree-year-old mother, Maria Ines. The woman was found with a stab wound to her chest when her ex-husband, Elio, came to collect to work at the supermarket business they still shared. After getting no reply ringing the building’s buzzer, Elio entered, finding his ex-wife in a pool of blood, before calling the police.

On finding Elio on the building’s steps, covered in blood, officers initially thought he had committed the crime before learning Piero had handed himself in at a police station shortly before the find, telling officers, “I think I’ve killed my mother. The knife is on the sofa.” Maria Ines was from a well-known local family, with six siblings who own businesses in Velez-Malaga. She had been living in the home she was killed in for over 30 years and neighbours were quick to pay tribute to the well-regarded woman, with one describing her as 'extraordinary, polite and kind. She never bothered anyone'. The incident has now rocked the neighbourhood, with one resident describing Piero as “a very shy and reserved boy”, and another commenting, “you would never think something like this would happen.”
Worker wounded in blender accident
A WOMAN, aged 44, has been injured after a blender exploded at her workplace in the sports club in the Sitio de Calahonda. The worker was transferred to hospital and the Labour Inspectorate and Centre for the Prevention of Occupational Hazards have now been informed. The incident, which happened at around 2.20pm at the council-owned club, saw officers from the Local Police, Operational Services Centre of the Guardia Civil and the Public Health Emergency Enterprise attend the scene. It has not yet been confirmed what caused the incident. Workplace deaths have doubled in Malaga Province over the last year from seven in the first half of 2016 to 14 so far this year. Spain’s largest trade union, Comisiones Obreras (CC OO), which has more than 1,100,000 members, staged a protest in Malaga early this week to draw attention to the issue of workplace safety.

Shopping centre fire sparks panic
Dumper truck driver killed A FIFTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD man has been killed building an illegal pool in Benamargosa after his leg was caught as his truck climbed a slope.
The vehicle, which was full of materials, had over-
turned, trapping the man and almost tearing off his leg. His colleagues tried to use a tourniquet to stop
the bleeding but the worker had ruptured his aorta,
leading to massive blood loss. Health workers arrived,
moving the man into an ambulance but he died near to the scene of the accident.
According to media reports, the works being carried
out to a private pool without a licence, and the builders had already been sanctioned for the project. The
vehicle was said to be owned and operated by the deceased and his brother.
by Jemima Roberts A FIRE originating in a kitchen at Fuengirola’s Miramar shopping centre sparked panic last week following a series of terrorist attacks across Europe. The centre is now open as normal again after the blaze, caused by a deep fat fryer, set off smoke alarms, causing shoppers to run to the exits. The head of the centre, David del Barrio said the scene started at around 4pm when “the alarm made a sound which made people start running,” before firefighters from Mijas arrived, restoring order. Mr del Barrio added the only injuries were from a woman who sprained her ankle trying to escape, explaining, “the property damages were confined to the kitchen and downstairs, which were flooded with water to put out the fire.” After the scare, social media sites were inundated with videos of the stampede, with some claiming there had been a bomb or shooting, prompting Fuengirola’s Mayor, Ana Mula to post messages on Facebook and Twitter reassuring residents.

Jail for screwdriver sex attacker by Jemima Roberts A THIRTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD man accused of sexually assaulting four victims after threatening them with a screwdriver has been jailed without bail. The man will now stay in prison until his trial after allegedly targeting women in Fuengirola in a series of attacks over the last six weeks. The man, whose name has not been released by the police, is said by the victims to have driven to and from the attacks in a white van and is described as having short, dark hair, an athletic build, a tattoo on his arm, and as being between five foot five and
five foot seven. The first assault came on May 31 when the alleged assailant is said to have approached a young Spanish girl, following her through the door to a building and then into its lift with her. Once inside he allegedly threatened to kill her before forcing her to take down his trousers. The man fled before carrying out his assault however, after being disturbed by a noise. Another victim was assaulted as she walked home along a street alone after a night out with friends. The man tried to make the Spanish girl touch him be-
fore one of her friends caught her up and started screaming. Reportedly the man did not flee but simply walked casually back to his parked white van. In his final attack, the alleged perpetrator targeted a British girl in her twenties at around dawn as she was leaving work. The man is said to have jumped into the back of the girl’s car as she sat in the driver’s seat, and threatened to kill her with a screwdriver, saying it was not the first time he had murdered someone. The man allegedly forced the British girl to perform several sex acts before leaving in a white van.
Trump targets Spanish olives

US President Donald Trump has found something else to target: the defenceless Spanish olive. Department of Commerce announced it would investigate imports of ripe olives produced in Spain to determine whether they benefit from unfair subsidies which allow them to be sold below market price on the other side of the Atlantic. Duties could be slapped on imports of the fruit if it’s found to be the case. US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said “a full and fair assessment of the facts” would be carried out. But he warned that if rules are being broken, his department “will act swiftly to halt any unfair trade practices.”
The owner of Red7, a travel company which specialises in stag and hen do’s, recently celebrated its 20th anniversary by taking his the entire workforce to the Costa del Sol. Managing director Ian Lucas, who founded the Brighton-based company and organised the trip, treated all 42 of his hard working staff to four-star accommodation, Michelin-starred cuisine and VIP nightlife.
Missing 80-year-old found dead
THE BODY of missing Manuel Jimenez Rosa has been found in a ditch near Velez Malaga’s El Ingenio shopping centre after he went missing last week. The alarm was raised after the eighty-year-old failed to return home after going for a walk in Torre del Mar. Around thirty rescue workers began searching for the man, eventually finding him dead. It is not yet clear what caused Jimenez Rosa’s death, although he was said to suffer from heart problems requiring medication.

Tropical diseases by Jemima Roberts THE UNIVERSITY OF MALAGA has continued its series of summer lectures with a talk on rare diseases. The talk, led by Pablo Lapunzina, scientific director of the Network Research Centre of Rare Diseases (CIBERER), was titled Rare diseases: the angel of personalised medicine. Mr Lapunzina spoke about the importance of implementing a national genome plan, explaining, “it is a necessity because this strategy aims to guide and help the health authorities, both in the country and in communities, to implement the genetic diagnosis of patients throughout the territory,” adding the scheme would also assist research. Mr Lapunzina explained while politicians may be concerned about committing to such a scheme, he insisted the difficulties would be “a matter of organisation” rather than their “budget,” which he claimed was “less relevant.” Rare diseases are considered to be those affecting more than five patients per ten thousand. There are currently thought to be between seven and eight thousand different rare diseases. As Mr Lapunzina explained, “The main challenge is to perform diagnoses within a reasonable time and within the patient’s own country. Unfortunately, many studies are sent to health centres abroad.”
Sexist advert flown over beaches
A CONTROVERSIAL advertising campaign removed from a car park in Torre del Mar two weeks ago has returned to the Costa del Sol, in the form of banners flown behind three planes. The advert, declaring “Comeme toerhigo” and featuring a picture of a naked woman with the word “censored” across her, was flown on banners behind planes over beaches in Malaga, Alicante and Cadiz. Media reports say members of the press received anonymous calls minutes before the stunt, giving them time to rush to the beach to see the banner. They added the company responsible is registered in Belize, a tax haven and that a young man was used to arrange the initial advertising space in the Torre del Mar car park, paying €80, although he has denied being involved. The campaign’s website had been displaying a clock counting down to the time of the aerial campaign, with the message “people of Alicante, Cadiz and Malaga, see you on the beach.” Local Police have said the person responsible could be guilty of at least five legal infractions.
Police investigate dead body discovery THE GUARDIA CIVIL are looking in to whether the body of a black man found in the water off a beach in Mijas is that of an immigrant. The corpse of the unidentified man, which was found 400 metres off the shore in Calahonda, is thought to be that of an immigrant who died trying to reach Spain by boat. According to media reports, the man had been dead for several days, which coupled with his race, has led police to believe he could be a migrant. The Guardia Civil, Maritime Salvage service, beach service and Public Health Emergency Company (EPES) attended the scene shortly after the man’s body was sighted at around 11am and declared him dead. The problem of immigrants getting into difficulties as they try to reach Spain by boat continues as the summer weather makes crossings easier. Sixtysix people were rescued from two small boats in the Alboran sea earlier this week by Spanish rescue boat, the Guardamar Polimnia. The vessel had been contacted by officials in Morocco warning a suspicious boat had been sighted leaving from Nador in Morocco. Guardamar Polimnia set out, alongside a helicopter, after requesting permission to enter Moroccan territory. While en route, they received another call warning of a second boat off Bouyafar in Morocco. Rescue workers sent out a distress signal to all boats in the area asking for information on any sightings before receiving word from ships, GNV Atlas and Niledutch Osprey, assisting their rescue efforts.

BBC signs first ever female Doctor Who The lead role in British sci-fi television series ‘Doctor Who’ will be played by a woman for the first time in its more than 50-year history, the BBC said last Sunday. by Tahnee Wright After much speculation over the role, Britain's public broadcaster said 35-year-old British actress Jodie Whittaker, who starred in the award-winning television crime drama series ‘Broadchurch’, will play the 13th Doctor. The news was announced in a one-minute video clip broadcast on television after the Wimbledon tennis men's final match, showing the actress walking through a forest wearing a long coat and hiding her face with a hood until the final moment. ‘I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role,’ Chris Chibnall, the show's new Head Writer and Executive Producer told Reuters. The Doctor, who travels through time in what from the outside appears to be a blue police telephone box, has the ability to regenerate, allowing a number of actors to play the role since the series was first broadcast in 1963. Whittaker will replace Peter Capaldi, who took on the role in 2013 amid an increasing clamour that it should go to a woman. His final episode will be the 2017 Christmas special. Previous doctors include Tom Baker, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant.
Whittaker told Reuters it was ‘completely overwhelming’ to be taking on the role and she wanted to tell fans of the series ‘not to be scared’ by her gender. ‘As an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves and not be boxed in by what you're told you can and can't be. It feels incredible,’ she said. ‘This is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that's exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.’
State pension age to rise to 68 earlier than planned
In a government proposal on Wednesday, it was announced Britain's state pension age should rise to 68 earlier than previously planned, meaning people born between 1970 and 1978 will need to work an extra year before being able to retire. Britain's current state pension age is 65, but is scheduled to rise steadily to 68 over the coming decades. Welfare minister David Gauke told parliament on Wednesday that he had accepted the recommendations of a review that an increase in the state pension age to 68 should take effect between 2037 and 2039, rather than 2044-2046 as earlier planned. He added that existing plans to raise the retirement age to 66 and 67 remained unchanged. ‘As life expectancy continues to rise and the number of people in receipt of State Pension increases, we need to ensure that we have a fair and sustainable system that is reflective of modern life and protected for future generations,’ Gauke said. The changes will need to be approved by parliament before they take effect.
Former Spanish banker found dead A former chairman of one of the country’s largest banks was found dead on Wednesday with a gunshot wound to the chest, Guardia Civil said. The body of Miguel Blesa, 69, who has links to senior members of Spain's governing Popular Party, was found beside a car at a private estate in Villanueva del Rey in the southern province of Cordoba. The Spanish press said his death appeared to be suicide but Guardia Civil refused to confirm. Blesa was having breakfast with friends at the hunting estate and left the table to move his car. His friends described hearing a gunshot moments later. Guardia Civil said an autopsy would be required to determine the exact cause of the death. The former head of the now defunct Caja Madrid savings bank was awaiting the result of an appeal to a six-year prison sentence for misusing corporate credit cards issued by Bankia SA, another defunct bank. Blesa was accused of setting up the so-called ‘black cards’ scheme which allowed him and over 60 other executives of the two lenders to buy jewels, holidays and expensive clothes. He was found guilty of having misappropriated €435,000. Among those who were also convicted over the affair was Rato, who chaired Bankia for two years until just before it was bailed out in 2012. Rato was sentenced to four and a half years in jail. Blesa, who is close to former prime minister Jose Maria Aznar, chaired Caja Madrid, one of the country’s top saving banks, between 1996 and 2010. In 2011, the bank was merged with seven other domestic savings institutions to form Bankia, which later had to be nationalized and bailed out for €18 billion. Blesa in 2013 became the first prominent banker to go behind bars since the start of Spain's financial crisis. He was jailed as part of a probe into Caja Madrid's purchase in 2008 at an inflated price of the City National Bank of Florida, but was released a few days later after that case was dropped.
33 injured in Madrid roller coaster collision
33 people, including six children under 10-years-old, were injured in a roller coaster collision in Madrid last weekend. Emergency services reported 27 people needed hospital treatment for minor injuries when two roller coaster cars collided last Sunday on the ‘Tren de la Mina’ at Madrid’s Parque de Atracciones theme park. One car, which had just completed the loop, failed to stop and hit the back of another car which was waiting to leave. Riders on the roller coaster - reaches a height of 17.5 metres and travels at a maximum speed of 35mph - can wear virtual reality goggles during the ride to heighten their experience, so riders in the approaching car wouldn't have seen the static car ahead of them. Emergency services spokeswoman Carmen Camacho told the Spanish press that none of the injuries appeared to be serious. She said that the riders were treated for back, neck and stomach pains. Representatives from Parque de Atracciones – one of Spain’s oldest theme parks - told the Spanish press that the roller coaster had passed a daily safety inspection that morning.

Prevention is better than cure BENALMADENA’S Council has completed a scheme aimed at preventing domestic abuse among young people. The initiative saw around 1,200 students aged between 14 and 16 participate in a series of workshops raising awareness about this type of violence, as well as teaching them sensitivity and equality. According to Irene Diaz, Councillor for Social Welfare, “the ultimate goal is to prevent gender violence among adolescents,” “adding we must promote measures to prevent and eradicate this social problem.” The workshops covered topics including gender inequality, patriarchal societies, machismo, gender identity, stereotypes, different types of love, as well as toxic relationships and how violence can manifest itself. The courses also pointed out the resources available to women who were victims of domestic abuse. The council’s department for equality commented the workshops had been vital in preventing violence after latest research studies showed a notable increase in complaints of abuse from young girls. Ms Diaz explained, "gender violence among young people has become a rather serious problem which we need to pay attention to and deal with. This has been shown by research studies carried out by organisations like the Andalucian Women’s Institute.” Rocio Garcia, the project’s manager, said young people often were unaware there was still gender inequality, explaining, "in many cases boys and girls tell us that men and women have the same rights and opportunities and that there is equality. This is what we call the mirage of equality. When we begin working with them, showing them press articles or videos they see bit by bit that we have equality in a nominal sense but not in a real way.” Ms Diaz finished by showing her appreciation to the course’s organisers, saying, "I want to thank all the those involved for their positivity and help working with the department for equality on this project, as well as the manager who organised the course.”

Mr Maph and Simone Lisa – At the Heart of Soul UNDOUBTEDLY two of the hardest working and most talented artists on the Costa del Sol are Mike Harding (known as Mr Maph) and wife Simone Lisa.

Both come from UK musical backgrounds with Mike and his family being heavily involved in Gospel music whilst Simone Lisa’s father Errol was a member of multi-hit 80s band Imagination and her aunt is singer Grace Kennedy. Having been heavily involved in the Soul and House scenes in the UK as well as composing music for TV, Mike decided that it was time to move out of Britain to Spain and continued singing with Simone Lisa whilst working as a music teacher. They are in demand all along the coast and recently promoted and appeared in a concert with the son of Otis Redding in Benalmadena which was a huge success and may lead to a European tour.

A dedicated Costa Woman by Michael Cano
REBECCA FRENCH grew up in Nerja which gave her a head start with Spanish and birth of her love for Spain. When her mother returned to her home town the roundabout city and grazing area for concrete cows, Milton Keynes, she of course found something of a change leaving Spain for the UK at the age of seven. Rebecca settled back and completed her schooling in Milton Keynes having obtained a National Diploma in Fashion and Business and was delighted to start working full time for a new telecoms company that had been set up from the division of Phones4U. As she says, “What an opportunity!” “Working my way up in the company I loved the structure, dedication and being part of a hugely profitable company from the beginning. Working alongside the directors, the knowledge I picked up was priceless” Rebecca adds. But as life does, it all got a bit too much and at the ripe age of 21, she flew to Seville, then on to Valencia where she was part of an internship to learn Spanish and merge into the Lifestyle in a local Hostel chain. Speaking off the record a CNN anchor was honest perhaps for the first time in his life. Conceding that the broadcaster’s anti-Russian rhetoric was b******* he explained that its purpose was to boost ratings. Well, I suppose it makes a change from celebrity or royalty trivia the purpose of which is to distract
us from the many real issues and challenges facing us.
I have a strategy to boost TV ratings that is guaranteed to get nations glued to their screens. The ingenious plan is to honestly debate issues that actually affect viewers. To add spice to televised dialogue we can select presenters who aren’t media appointees. Why not also allow participation by audiences that haven’t previously been screened to exclude real dissent. As I am the one with the pen in my hand let me suggest three of my hot topics. Nigel Farage is in the chair and on his panel squirm Foreign Office and Financial Affairs government ministers. Sharing the panel is a European Union Commissioner who didn’t elect to appear. As he has no idea what election means does it matter. Finally, why not toss in a media corporate head. Those who make up the debating panel can be adjusted according to topic. Top of my agenda is why the EU sticks to anti-Russian sanctions that have cost EU nations €60.2 billion in lost trade. You made your bed you lie on it: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov: “Russia will not participate in any talks concerning conditions for lifting sanctions.”
Trade blockades damage EU economies, divert trade to rivals, and help Russia to achieve self-sufficiency. Sanctions backfired and failed in their purpose. The Russian economy expands faster than does that of the EU and Crimea is still Russian in accordance with the free will of Crimean people. If wretched panellists were robustly interrogated by a presenter who isn’t a placeman, if quizzed by a randomly selected audience, the debate would be a much looked forward to ratings-booster. Why not afterwards debate further topics. On my agenda would be disastrous NATO-inflamed refugee crisis. According to a UN report conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria put 20.9 million refugees on the road most of which lead to the countries that caused the exodus. Finally, I want honest debate and searching questions relating to the earnings and assets of politicians. If single mums waiting on restaurant tables are required to detail their paltry tips why not the same searching standards for passengers on parliamentary gravy trains. Every dog has its day and readers will have their suggestions too. If so we can be sure TV ratings will smash records. The solution to the ratings chasing dilemma can be summed up in a single word, honesty. Broadcasters, look it up.

One of the more upsetting aspects of getting older is that we hear increasingly of past acquaintances going toes up. It’s even more distressing when it involves close friends and especially when it is totally unexpected. Snuffing It; Assuming Room Temperature; Meeting the Kennedys, Buying the Farm - they are all terms for that inevitable event that will overtake us all, and are a light hearted and sometimes tasteless way to cope with our fear of the unknown. My own philosophy is simply that if death was good enough for the likes of Churchill, Gandhi, Lennon and Red Rum, then it’s good enough for me. What is important though is how we remember those we have lost. Just eight weeks ago a large group of us were enjoying our biennial ’Bermuda’ reunion in the beautiful Cotswolds, and then yesterday news reached me that one of our number has tragically died in Boston following surgery. It’s hard to take in when the memories are so fresh. We had four days and nights of eating, drinking and reminiscing over past times amid much laughter and silliness. And now the awful confirmation that life is extremely tenuous. It really does reinforce the notion, though one we often fail to follow, that each hour and each day should be lived to the full. Our friend was known to everyone as Prunes. Not his real name obviously, but a handle he acquired as a boy when misjudging the height of a barbed wire fence he was jumping over. I leave the rest to the imagination. Happily, he assured us, no permanent damage was inflicted, but the name stuck nevertheless. He was a character, with an acerbic manner and was sharp and witty in a dead pan sort of way. What you saw was exactly what you got and there was no suffering fools gladly. When meeting him for the first time, it was hard to determine whether he liked you or not, and a feeling that he was perhaps secretly laughing at your uncertainty. Rum was mostly his drink of choice, but he also enjoyed Canadian Club whisky, and in ordering this at the bar, he would ask for a Maybelline and water. Asked why he referred to it as that, he replied that it was because the more of them he drank, the better the ladies looked. Rest in peace Prunes and don’t give the angels a hard time.

Have you ever thought why the European Union are so unhappy about Britain wanting to leave the E.U? It’s a little like being a member of an organisation that originally started up in Italy, and once you’re in, you’re in so they believe, if you want to leave you are taken around the corner and given a bit of ungentlemanly mistreatment, a bit of mudsling, the odd kicking and the occasional slap this appears to be happening to us at the moment but to a slightly lesser extent. Isn’t it rather curious this huge organisation with massive trading deals and resources are giving little old Britain such a hard job of leaving. In 1972, I voted for Britain to join the Eurozone, it seemed a good idea at the time, we were promised good trading deals and we were told it would improve our farming, industry and other exports. Eventually as we are all well aware, we have lost control of our human rights laws, which were the best in the world, now our judges are overruled by either Brussels or Strasburg, the immigration problem has driven several of the members to breaking point in the last decade or so. I will ask the question again. Why is the E.U. so unhappy that Britain wants to leave? And why don’t they just let us walk away? if they believe that they are so strong and everything in the garden are coming up roses. For a little while now I have been questioning my vote at the referendum, I voted OUT, I have waivered occasionally like other supporters of OUT may have done. I have spent the last few months looking and researching the many Alan Greenspan
possibilities for the reason why the E.U is throwing up all the problems that are threatening our resolve to leave, getting over the hurdles that could take up to three years before we can leave. Many so-called experts have told us it will be disastrous for Britain if we leave while other so-called experts believe that Britain can forge ahead with great success. Alan Greenspan once the world’s most powerful former central banker agreed to an interview by Nick O’Connor from Southbank Investment research, Greenspan words predicts the demise of the European Union. “There’s one thing that bothers me, considerably, which nobody makes any mention of. There is in the European Central Bank (ECB) a mechanism as it exists out of necessity where the (ECB) is made up of European, Euro area, and then there’s Target 2. Target 2 at this particular stage is turning out to be an extraordinary large transfer from the Bundesbank essentially to Italy and Greece and more recently the (ECB), this means the Bundesbank is lending money in big numbers we’re talking 7,800 billion Euros, this cannot go on indefinitely at some point somebody’s got to move Greece out, Greece is in the (ECB) by accident or fraud? They came in under false pretences, as the Greek numbers were all wrong if the true figures had been known Greece would not have been able to join, nonetheless they were allowed to stay, this was a terrible mistake. The Greek savings rate is -20% you cannot run an economy on -20% savings rate. Something is going to happen, my view is that it is going to be Greece and conceivably Italy could go, the funny part of it that the second largest contributor to the net flow in lending to Spain and Italy is Luxembourg, with their steel and banking system. While to total assets of the (ECB) continue to go straight up, but what would happen if there is a default in the Euro? In the US if there was a default on the Dollar the US treasury would step in and bail out the problem, so far there is not a comparable vehicle with the (ECB) if there was a default on the Euro would the (ECB) be able to step in?
Greenspan continues, I’m very worried. Mario Draghi is a very good guy, is he just talking when he said we will do whatever is required, as his promise to flood the market with freshly printed Euros until everybody leaves him alone, at some point somebody is going to say I don’t want to accept Euros. He says there are two ways the Euro can disappear, the first is the internal demand within the Eurozone as the majority of people need to pay their taxes. Marine Le Pen has proposed a creation of a new basket of currencies a kind of shadow Euro, France could then reinstate the Franc and peg its currency to the basket. Another mechanism would be the external demand falling, seeing the structural problems will never be resolved and ditching the Euro, if nobody wants The Euro, Draghi may as well print monopoly money at that point he would be out of ammo. Greenspan continues by saying it is Italy and Greece as potential flashpoints in the next European crisis, and clearly the endgame is a crisis in which the (ECB) becomes powerless after some other countries outside the E.U will not accept Euros any longer. So, what of these claims by Greenspan, you could say that he is a dinosaur, for some time no longer in the exalted position however he was a banking whiz kid, being American he was probably not in favour of Europe joining together matching the strength of America. Recently the Deutsche bank were fined by the US Department of Justice for miss-selling mortgages before the last financial crisis, the fine was $14 billion however the bank has only $10 billion to cover its self. In France, recently they had a banking stress test, BNP Paribas and Societe Generale two of the six biggest in Europe, were found to have capital shortfalls to survive a future crisis of 10 billion Euros and 13 billion respectively. In May Spain saw its Banco Popular share price drop 25% in one morning and needed to raise 2.5 billion Euros, after claiming that they had one of the best savings reserve in Europe. In Britain at the moment borrowing has reached huge proportions and Mark Carney the head of the Bank of England, has warned British banks to keep a firm eye on lending as it is believed that there would be many defaulters especially if the bank rate is raised. I would not accuse any of the banks, be it Germany, Spain, Italy or Greece of lying or misleading anybody, but does Greenspan’s voice of doom for the European Union have sought of resounding message? In France people were taken to the guillotine in a hand cart, and the crowd would shout out “there are off to hell in a hand cart” IN or OUT of the Union I hope all us British see Heaven. P.S. As I finished writing this column, Athanasios Vamvakidis of the Bank of America Merrill Lynch, says that the single currency block has been falling apart for 20 years. By Michael Cano Now he will be appearing at the Moonlight Bar in Benalmadena next Thursday and he spoke to RTN just before jetting off to Alicante and then being one of the featured artists on board the Thomson Discovery Cruise Ship. His performance at the Moonlight Bar will consist of two sides of the singer. The first part which will last about 45 minutes will show him as the Soul Man which was the title of his second album. After a break, he will return to presenter a tribute to Nat King Cole with a selection of some of that artist’s best loved numbers and some more modern pieces – including several he has written himself – which have been inspired by the great man. “It’s coming up to the centenary of his birth and alongside people like Louis Armstrong, I think that Nat helped to shape musical tastes and cross boundaries, so I want to pay tribute to such a great and influential performer” said Andy with considerable commitment. This is a man who has represented Britain in the Eurovision

he responded “Everybody thought that I would be too nice to take on this sort of role but I enjoy acting and at the end of the day both the performers and the audience know that it’s all for fun” He has performed around the world but fell in love with Cyprus which he played last year with Mallorca resident - and former member of Prince Charles’s favourite group The Three Degrees – Sheila Ferguson and has recently returned there to play and to take a bit of a holiday with his wife. Andy is looking forward to performing in Benalmadena and was pleased to hear about the layout of the Moonlight Bar which could well be heaving for his performance which costs just €20 for entry, with doors opening at 8pm. Classical music under the moon TWO very different but equally talented musicians will be presenting a concert of classical music with the emphasis on Latin American composers on Sunday. Lars Hoefs, a cellist originally from the USA, is professor at Sao Paulo State University in Campinas, Brazil. He frequently performs and teaches throughout Brazil, Europe and the USA and has become a leading expert on the cello music of Heitor Villa-Lobos. David Lau Magnussen is one of the foremost Danish pianists, who has received numerous prizes and awards. He also gives master classes regularly in conservatories and universities worldwide, most recently at CCOM (Chinese Conservatory of Music, Beijing). This Soiree is a unique one of a kind and follows the path of concerts that Project Music Management has presented at the Avanto Beach Restaurant in La Cala de Mijas. Although the pair have only met recently, they have quickly adjusted their styles to suit each other and apart from a selection of compositions by Villa-Lobos, Marx, Ponce, De Falla, Piazolla and Schifrin, there will also be a nod to some of the European composers perhaps including works by Bach and Beethoven. The concert costs â‚Ź36 and starts at 9pm, but for this cost, guests will be offered a welcome drink, as well as canapĂŠs and drinks during the concert and a chance to meet and chat with the duo after the concert finishes. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

More negatives and questions I like talking but I need to work. Can I eat and drink as well? Your homework last week was to translate these two sentences into Spanish, so here are the answers: Me gusta hablar pero necesito trabajar. ¿Puedo comer y beber también? If you are a fairly elementary student of Spanish and managed to do that correctly – well you’ve achieved a lot! Also it means you’ve been paying attention to what I’ve told you, which is always nice for me. For those of you who might not have got it quite right, the most typical mistake is to mistranslate “talking” – remember that “talking” is treated like “to talk” after “me gusta”. “Me gusta hablar” (I like to talk – I like talking). Also last lesson I promised you some more of those lovely verbs to give you more scope in what you can say. Remember that at the moment we are not making any changes to the verbs we are learning – we are keeping them in their basic or infinitive form and learning ways we can fit them into sentences just as they are. Also, just a quick reminder that these infinitive forms in Spanish always end in –ar, -er or –ir. There are no exceptions to this rule. So with all that said – here are some more: ANDAR – to walk, CERRAR – to close, COMPRAR – to buy, ESCUCHAR - to listen, ESTAR – to be (how or where),
FIRMAR – to sign, VISITAR - to visit. CORRER – to run, HACER – to make/to do, LEER – to read, TENER – to have, VER – to watch/to see. CONDUCIR – to drive, ESCRIBIR – to write, IR – to go, SALIR – to go out. There you go, sixteen new verbs. Incidentally, if you want to commit these to memory the best way to do it is in a relaxed and repetitive way. Here’s a suggestion to help you. Write them down in a list, the Spanish words on the left and their English translations on the right. Sit down for about 10 or 15 minutes in a quiet, comfortable place where you’re not going to be disturbed, turn off the infernal mobile phone, put the cat in another room and ignore your other half for a while! Maybe put some favourite music on in the background. Then read the Spanish words slowly out loud, one after the other, whilst silently noticing their translations as you go down the list. Do this once or maybe twice a day, but without putting yourself under any pressure to memorise. After a few times you will find that the words start to stick in your mind, mainly because you are relaxed as you are learning them. Well, without further ado, I think we should start
seeing what new sentences we can make. I’ll do some examples with their translations, and then some in English and Spanish for you to have a think about before the next lesson. You might need to do a small amount of research for some of the extra words. Voy a andar a la playa. I’m going to walk to the beach. ¿Puedo cerrar la puerta? Can I close the door? No necesito comprar más. I don’t need to buy (any) more. Me gusta escuchar música. I like listening to music. ¿Vas a estar aquí mucho tiempo? Are you going to be here for long? Translate into English No puedo firmar hoy ¿Quieres visitar a tu amigo? No necesito correr. Me gusta hacer los deberes. No voy a leer todo el libro. Translate into Spanish Do you want to have a lot of money? I like watching the news. I can’t drink and drive. Are you going to write a letter? I need to go to the chemist.

Blood pressure explained
Make Sunday your funday Monday and morning are two fairly innocent words individually, but linked together they are probably the worst two words in the English language, instantly instilling hatred and dread into most of us. Most people start thinking about Monday morning, sometime on Sunday afternoon and start preparing mind and body in readiness, whereas others carry on with their hedonistic weekend up until the moment they awake bleary eyed, already late for work, on the first day of the working week. Shaleena Anand, a mindfulness and meditation coach and founder of the WIIDLO mentoring service has these tips to solve the Sunday/Fear, Monday/Blues conundrum.
Learn to breathe properly
Typically, blood pressure increases with age. Risk of high blood pressure begins to climb when men hit age 45, although it can occur in younger men. Obesity or a family history of high blood pressure also increases risk. What is high blood pressure? Blood pumping through the circulatory system is under pressure, much like the water in the pipes of a house. And just as too much water pressure can damage pipes and faucets, high blood pressure can spell trouble. Hypertension occurs when the force exerted against artery walls is abnormally high. Over time, the increased pressure can cause a wide range of problems. Small bulges, called aneurysms, may form in blood vessels. The heart can become enlarged, increasing the danger of heart failure. Damage to blood vessels in the kidneys can cause them to fail. Because tiny blood vessels in the eyes are especially vulnerable to damage, hypertension can lead to vision problems and even blindness. In some patients, high blood pressure is related to other medical problems or can be a side effect of certain drugs. This form of the disease is called secondary hypertension, because it happens secondary to other medical conditions. High blood pressure is usually diagnosed using the familiar blood pressure test that involves a cuff wrapped around the upper arm. The cuff is inflated and then sensors measure the pressure of blood beating against the arteries. Blood pressure is measured using two numbers - systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic, the upper number, is the pressure when the heart is beating. Diastolic, the lower number, is the pressure between beats. Normal blood pressure is considered to be anything below 120/80. Prehypertension is defined as a systolic reading between 120 and 139 and a diastolic reading between 80 and 89. Hypertension is defined as blood pressure of 140/90 or higher. For people over age 60, high blood pressure is defined as 150/90 or higher.
It might sound obvious, but breathing is the best way to de-stress and prepare yourself for a week of meetings and battling that inbox. It is so simple, yet we so often forget to take time to stop, step back and breathe deeply. The human body can live for three weeks without food, three days without water but not a second without oxygen, proving just how important breath is and Just a few minutes of deep breathing every two hours can significantly reduce stress. Start every Sunday and see how long you can keep it up throughout the week.
Go to bed earlier on Sunday night Turn off Netflix and crawl under the duvet earlier on Sunday nights and if you have to leave your house for work at 7am, try waking up at 5am a few days per week, to go for a run, do some meditation, make a big breakfast, read a book. Enjoy this personal time, so by the time you leave for work, you’ve already included some positive experiences in your day.
Prepare your meals in advance
Find yourself always reaching for that takeaway panini and chocolate bar on a Monday come midday? You’re not alone. No matter how busy your weekend is, take time on Sunday to prepare meals for the next five days. Meal prepping with help you look and feel good, as well as being a great way to save extra cash, as ultimately what you feed your body affects your mood. Choose energy-releasing foods and ensure you are getting the right vitamins, essential to lowering stress levels.
Practise meditation
Meditation has been practised for thousands of years and is a proven way to reduce stress and promote happiness. Happy people are 31 per cent more productive and three times more creative than their unhappy counterparts, according to a study by the American Psychological Association. There are plenty of options and you can take part in meditation classes or sign up for online guided meditation sessions. Simple acts such as remembering everything you are grateful for when you wake up in the morning can make a big difference. Do this every time you feel stress building up inside. It’s hard to feel stress or anger while feeling grateful.
Just a regular 10-minute walk can help relieve anxiety and depression, according to a study by the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Taking a walk in nature allows your body to release good endorphins and results in you having more energy than before you exercised.
Get your blood pumping with exercise It’s tempting to just cuddle up on the sofa with a cup of tea on a Sunday afternoon, but it actually might be worth tugging those trainers on instead. Start the new week feeling revitalised by going for a walk every Sunday.
Transform your workspace We often associate our place of work with stress and anxiety, which means we anchor those feelings on the room we work in and the people we work around, so bring in tools to brighten up your workplace. Change your laptop background to a beautiful sunset or a personal picture, print it out and keep it in your pocket. Use a photo you have taken to strengthen the neurological association between yourself and that place. There are lots of exercises you can do to create the association of freedom in your mind before the grind of Monday-to-Friday kicks in again.

Dementia kills - but survey reveals Brits don't know the disease is fatal

New research has revealed that 38 per cent of the UK population are most concerned about developing dementia in the future. The recent YouGov survey, commissioned by award winning brain clinic Re:Cognition Health, has revealed that 49 per cent of those questioned don’t realise that dementia is fatal, despite it being the leading cause of death in England and Wales. The survey of 2049 UK adults was commissioned to determine how much the British public know about dementia and its symptoms. Despite more people (38 per cent) fearing they may develop dementia, compared to cancer (26 per cent) and heart disease (6 per cent), many (11 per cent) aren’t sure of what the symptoms of dementia are at all, apart from memory loss, with (81 per cent) of Brits thinking difficulty remembering recent events is a symptom of dementia. 62 per cent of those surveyed know that dementia can cause unexpected and uncharacteristic anger, but 68 per cent didn’t realise that Alzheimer’s and other causes of dementia can cause inappropriate sexual behaviour such as making inappropriate remarks.
Alarmingly, it was revealed that 11 per cent of Britons are unsure of what the symptoms of dementia are at all, however, it is reassuring to discover that 87 per cent believe early detection of Alzheimer’s Disease and other causes of dementia can make a difference to the future health of the individual. Dr Emer MacSweeney, CEO and Medical Director of Re:Cognition Health says: ‘Early intervention and accurate diagnosis of the specific cause of a person’s cognitive decline are key to ensuring the individual receives access to the correct and best treatment, at the earliest possible stage, before their symptoms have progressed to those of dementia. In order to receive an early diagnosis, it is essential to recognise symptoms as soon as possible. Unfortunately, this survey highlights that the general public is not yet sufficiently well informed; there is a massive lack of awareness.’ Early symptoms of cognitive impairment which may lead to dementia include: Short term memory loss Repeatedly asking the same questions
Changes in behaviour - unexpected/ uncharacteristic anger and changes in mood Confusion Getting lost in a familiar environment Forgetting words/problems with speech and language Loss of sense of direction/ disorientation Difficulty in performing everyday (seemingly normal) tasks Misplacing items Difficulty making decisions and planning Issues with balancing and spatial awareness Becoming passive and disinterested Problems with calculation ‘If you or a loved one are experiencing one of more of these early symptoms, I advise you, strongly, to seek prompt medical advice. An early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease and other causes of cognitive impairment, leading eventually to symptoms of dementia, will give you the chance to change your quality of life and eventual outcome, for the individual and their families,’ adds Dr MacSweeney.

Q: What are cataracts? A: Cataracts are the most common cause of blindness in the world today but thankfully they are treatable with highly effective surgery. There are various different types of cataract: • A nuclear cataract causes gradual reduction in vision • A cortical cataract may give rise to poor vision associated with seeing haloes around lights or seeing double with one eye. • Posterior subcapsular lens opacities tend to cause reduction in vision, susceptibility to bright lights and glare. A: The most common reason is increasing age. As people grow older, the lens of the eye becomes less clear until, ultimately, a cataract that causes reduction in vision is present. A: Unfortunately there’s not much we can do to avoid them, however it has been suggested that too much sunlight may make people more susceptible to cataracts so good quality sunglasses should be worn in bright sunlight. Q: How are cataracts treated? A: The only method of improving vision is to have the cataract removed surgically, but it is a highly effective form of treatment. Ingredients
1 teaspoon dried oregano, 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breast halves 2 tablespoons butter 1/4 cup water 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon chicken gravy granules 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley
Method
1. In a bowl, mix the oregano, salt, and pepper. Rub the mixture into chicken. Melt the butter in a frying pan over medium heat. Brown chicken in butter for 3 to 5 minutes on each side. Place chicken in a slow cooker. 2. In the same frying pan, mix the water, lemon juice, garlic,

and granules. Bring the mixture to boil. Pour over the chicken in the slow cooker. 3. Cover, and cook on High for 3 hours, or Low for 6 hours. Add the parsley to the slow cooker 15 to 30 minutes before the end of the cook time.
Summer in a Cup
Ingredients 16 ounces pineapple juice, 9 ounces banana liqueur (Liquor 43 will do), 9 ounces of Malibu or equivalent, 8 ounces fruit punch, 8 ounces orange juice Orange and Pineapple slices, for garnish Preparation Preparation Time – 10 minutes.
Method Mix together the pineapple juice, banana liqueur, coconut rum, fruit punch and orange juice in a large pitcher filled with ice. Pour into long glasses and garnish with slices of orange and pineapple.
Method 1. Sprinkle strips of sirloin with garlic powder to taste. In a large frying pan over medium heat, heat the vegetable oil and brown the seasoned beef strips. Transfer to a slow cooker. 2. Mix stock cube with hot water until dissolved, then mix in cornflour until dissolved. Pour into the slow cooker with meat. Stir in onion, green peppers, stewed tomatoes, soy sauce, sugar, and salt.

Diminishing dinner parties According to new research, the dinner party will soon be consigned to the history books. The latest study into the nation’s entertaining habits has revealed white napkins, starch tablecloths, bread rolls and prawn cocktails in the style of The Good Life’s Margo and Jerry Leadbetter are simply a thing of the past to the extent that 84% of modern Brits think informal or causal kitchen suppers have replaced the stuffy dinner party of old. The research also revealed a guide to modern day entertaining, for both guests and hosts alike – including never serving a chicken breast wrapped in Parma ham, always serving olives from the local deli rather than a jar and making sure what you serve is seasonal. Other rules of modern entertaining are NEVER serving anything on a cocktail stick, always having enough mixers and ice and never talking TV, jobs or children. However, politics, sex and death are subjects which should NOT be avoided at the modern day party, according to the 1,500 adults polled. The survey also revealed that because we’re ditching a ‘dining room’ culture, 65% are now more sociable than ever, having friends over on average three times a month. In fact, Brits will host an average of 36 supper and lunch parties every year at their homes, splashing out just over £3,000 a year on food and booze for friends according to the poll. But as ‘casual’ as we appear in our entertaining , Brits secretly still pull all the stops out to impress; with 62% admitting they tidy and clean the house from top to bottom before guests arrive, and 31% saying they agonise over choosing the right outfit. On average, Brits spend £52 on food for our guests and a further £33 on alcohol – with Saturday night emerging as
the nation’s favourite time to entertain for 54%, followed by Friday night (20%). Unfortunately though, it’s not all plain sailing, as almost half of Brits (44%) have been left less than impressed by their guests’ behaviour - feeling their efforts have been unappreciated.

Aston Martin Valkyrie SINCE THE first reveal of the Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar in July 2016, Aston Martin, Red Bull Advanced Technologies and project partner AF Racing have been working intensively to further develop the Valkyrie’s aerodynamics, body styling and cockpit packaging.
The teardropshaped cockpit’s upper body surfaces and lower tub contours follow the envelope of space available between the huge full length Venturi tunnels that run either side of the cockpit floor. Drawing huge quantities of air beneath the car to feed the rear diffuser, these tunnels are the key to generating the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s extraordinary levels of downforce while keeping the upper body surfaces free from additional aerodynamic devices that would spoil the purity of the styling. To maximise interior space the seats are mounted directly to the tub, with occupants adopting a reclined ‘feet-up’ position reminiscent of today’s Formula One and Le Mans Prototype race cars, ensuring driver and passenger are extremely safe, perfectly supported and feel completely at one with the car. A four-point harness comes as standard, while an optional six-point harness will be offered for those who intend to do more track driving.

As anyone in any sport will confirm, you’re only as good as your last match, last innings or last putt. The extreme fortunes of the England cricket team in the space of a handful of days exaggerates that belief, although the criticism of the performance of the squad came from a corner that was least expected. Current skipper Joe Root was stunned by former England captain Michael Vaughan's comments that his side had failed to respect the traditions of Test Cricket during their humbling 340-run defeat by South Africa at Trent Bridge. Vaughan, now a commentator with BBC Radio's Test Match Special, made his comments as England lost seven first-innings wickets for 62 runs to be bowled out in just a little more than 50 overs for 205 in reply to the visitors’ 335. Root's 78 was the only half-century in a disappointing total that left England always chasing the game. "The England batting has been appalling," said Vaughan. "Maybe it's a lack of respect about what the game is. They look like they are playing a Twenty20 game. They have this approach of attack, attack, attack. There is no thought or feeling of seeing off a bowler or wearing a team down." England's second innings in pursuit of a world-record target of 474 fared little better, with the home side bowled out for just 133 with more than a day to spare on the fourth day and for the second match in a row leaving holders of fifth day tickets more than short changed. South Africa have now levelled the series 1-0. As the test series began later than usual this season, it’s been
forgotten, perhaps, that following on from the disappointment in the winter this was England's sixth defeat in their last eight tests. Root, the new captain and in his second test in charge was more than taken aback by his mentor and family friend Michael Vaughan. "I think that's very unfair – I can't believe he's actually said that. We pride ourselves on winning series like this, and unfortunately we've played poorly this week," Root said. But the Yorkshire batting star did accept that his side ought to be able to bat in different styles according to the match situation, whatever the individual preferences of members of his team. "We need to make sure we learn quickly ... (so that) if we are in a similar situation (in the third test) at The Oval, for example, we play it slightly smarter," said Root. "Part of test cricket is trying to find a balance of both (attack and defence) – and even if it's not your strength, you build it into your natural game. You have periods where you can absorb a bit of pressure and find the right moment to apply it when chances come along. We are capable of doing it and have done it previously, but this wasn't a very good example of it."
La Liga fixtures delayed due to probe The Spanish football federation has pushed back a draw for the upcoming football league calendar until today (Friday) following the arrest of its president. According to a message on their official Twitter account, the draw to decide fixtures for the first and second divisions, originally scheduled for yesterday, will now take place today at 12:30pm at the federation’s headquarters. The federation postponed the scheduled meeting for 24 hours in the wake of the arrest of Angel Maria Villar in a major anti-corruption probe. His son Gorka along with federation vice-president and financial chief Juan Padron were also held in connection with the probe, which notably focuses on allegations of skimming profits from international matches. Earlier on Wednesday, the head of Spain’s government sports council, Jose Ramon Lete, had said the draw would go ahead despite the arrests and cancelled meetings. “The draw, which is a purely administrative act, will take place.” The 2017/18 first division season will begin the weekend of August 19-20 and end on May 20, 2018.
