by Jimmy Grayling TORREMOLINOS Council has this week confirmed that it is to follow through on long-mooted plans to revolutionise the town with a €3.8 million investment. Work on pedestrianising the historic centre is to begin in autumn, confirmed Mayor Jose Ortiz at a glitzy presentation, and that will mark the beginning of “a project that Torremolinos has been needing for years.” Plaza Costa del Sol will be refitted and vehicles prohibited from an area stretching from avenida Isabel Manoja to El Bajondillo, including La Nogalera, calle San Miguel and the Torre de Pimentel, all of which are to be resurfaced. alta is the man responsible for designing the new vision, and he added: “This will be an integral scheme that will transform this space into a centre among centres, the future emblem of Torremolinos.” The council team have spent months working alongside local business owners and neighbourhood associations in order to properly plan the project, with over 100 new business applications having been submitted in recent weeks. Once pedestrianisation is complete, two other chunks of investment will be rolled out, the first of which will be used to restore the nineteenth century Casa de Doña Maria Barrabino and the iconic fountain in front of it. “These will serve as the new monumental sym-

bol of Torremolinos,” explained Peralta. “All tourist towns have an emblematic, historical place to take photographs of, and this municipality will soon have its own!” A nodding Mayor Ortiz added that the idea is to “create a historic centre that will not only talk about monuments but the town’s history, its link with water, its springs and its mills.” Other targets for the redevelopment, scheduled to be complete by 2019, include a gastronomy market showcasing local produce, refurbishment of outdated hotels and repainting dilapidated buildings, as the party town which became famous in the 1960s continues its march into the 21st century. “Today a new story begins,” concluded Ortiz.

€102 million budget boost VELEZ MALAGA’S Council has approved this year’s multimillion-euro budget following lengthy political negotiations. by Sally Underwood Investments include increase funding for the Women’s Information Centre, as well as improvements to the Mercovelez building, Casa Cervantes, the local police station and the Alcazaba. Also included were €500,000 for employment, environmental and cultural spending, as well as the extension and maintenance of parks and €50,000 item for the Museum of the City, MVVEL. The plan also includes more than €13 million for investments and a 6.4% increase in welfare for families. Transport for university students, which costs the council €130,000 each year, has also been ringfenced. Commenting on Velez Malaga’s commitment to social welfare, Councillor for Finance, Juan Carlos Marquez, explained, “we are spending more than €11 million in this area, including on personnel, and even increasing funding for certain schemes.” The town’s Mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, said approval of the budget meant “investments can be made throughout the area, helping to create jobs and develop our town”. Marquez added the

Benalmadena among most popular destinations

WEBSITE Tripadvisor has published its annual report, “Summer Holidays 2017,” showing Benalmadena is among the most popular holiday rental destinations in Andalucia. The area is also one of the most sought after by foreign tourists on the internet for this summer season alongside Malaga and Nerja. The report also revealed the municipality has one of the highest concentrations of foreign tourists along with Chiclana, Cordoba, El Rompido or Fuengirola and others. The study, which used a survey for its statistics, showed the Costa del Sol and Costa de la Luz are the preferred destinations for tourists from within Spain and points out up to 20% of Spanish tourists will choose a holiday rental, the second most popular option after the hotels. According to the study, July is the most popular month for those who choose to rent over hotels, while June offer more reasonable prices. The study also found Barcelona was the most popular destination across the whole of Spain and Nerja the most reasonably priced.

Health and safety first by Sally Underwood SCHOOLS around Benalmadena have been taking part in a series of workshops teaching children how to avoid injuring themselves. The scheme, which involved the “Seguritas” child safety mascot used by the Junta de Andalucia, involved various training games which taught children about the danger of electrical shocks, cuts, the dangers of poisoning from chemicals, burns and falls in a fun and playful way. The training was broken down into various phases. In the first, children were shown a cartoon about situations in which children can be injured and shows them how to protect themselves against being hurt. The next involved two children miming being cut or suffocated and the rest of the children had to guess what accident happened, what caused it and what they could do to avoid anything similar in future. Participants also acted out various scenes showing different dangerous situations and

two volunteers directed them into one of two endings; into green for safe and red for danger. The characters act out the scenes, first heeding the advice of “Seguritas” and not becoming injured, and secondly ignoring his advice and having an accident. Joaquin Villazon, Councillor for the Environment, claimed the workshop “uses games to increase interest, participation and learning about preventing danger.” He added, “the aim of the campaign is to instil a ‘culture of prevention’ in schools, teaching students to take into account risks and prevent them.” Mr Villazon visited the mobile training unit carrying out the workshops, which was located in Parque de la Paloma, where CEIP Poeta Salvador Rueda schoolchildren have been learning about safety. He said the campaign also dealt with the issue of dealing with chemicals, as well as using safety equipment. Each child received a high visibility vest and a group photo as a memento of their day.

Thousands protest bullfight A PETITION protesting last Saturday’s bullfight in Velez Malaga attracted 10,765 signatures. The petition was signed both online and in person and expressed protestors’ “disgust at this bullfight and any form of animal abuse.” In May, around 200 protestors from pressure group, “Rodea el Ruedo”, had previously marched through Velez Malaga’s streets, carrying a large banner saying, “No to bullfights. Torture is neither art nor culture.” They made their way to the Town Hall, where they challenged on the council to fulfil its commitment, made last year, to ban animal cruelty in the town. Mari Carmen Castillo, one of the movement’s spokesmen, said “it seems a joke that a bullfight is scheduled barely a year after this commitment”, adding she believed the fight was “illegal.” She finished, “our platform intends to stop this bullfight, ensuring the council comply with its law.” The fight featured matadors Manuel Diaz “El Cordobes” and Francisco Rivera “Paquirri”.

Water cuts could last three days

A FAULT on the Acosol network in Fuengirola means residents could be without water supply for 72 hours. The water company have reported technicians will be working to fix the fault which could affect the entire municipality with the exception of Benaldmadena Pueblo which has its own water supply. Emabesa has recommended locals use private water supplies or depositos in the meantime, just in case. Emabesa has also committed to using any available water resources in a responsible and reasonable way to avoid cuts to the water network. They explained wherever possible, if water shortages did force cuts these would always take place at night.

Going around in circles MIGUEL BRIONES, a delegate from the Junta de Andalucia has this week announced a contract has been signed to create a new roundabout and road layout at kilometre 222 of the A-7 in Benalmadena. Mr Briones explained, “it is a project that residents have been asking for for some time. We hope to begin works after the summer as it will considerably improve the lives of those living in Benalmadena as well as tourists who visit the area.” Before the announcement made by Mr Briones, the mayor of Benalmadena, Victor Navas, had previously asked the Junta to give “definitive” dates for the project. He also asked the Ministry for Development to make a special effort to push the scheme through, “and therefore not make us wait until 2021 for the work to be completed, as it would be under the current multi-year plan as the people of Benalmadena cannot wait that long for resolution to a problem that poses a serious risk.

FAMILIES on the Costa del Sol who are receiving unemployment benefits are due to take part in a series of workshops helping them back into the workplace. by Sally Underwood The course, which is set to benefit around 300 in Velez Malaga currently receiving social or emergency aid, “will not be about control but rather about giving people the personal, social and economic tools to move beyond receiving benefits,” according to Councillor for Social Welfare and Equality, Zoila Martin. Marilo Pelaez, Head of Specialised Social Services, said the workshop will be divided into four sessions covering subjects including personal presentation, self-esteem, social skills, emotional intelligence, CVs and job interviews, as well as managing personal finances. Ms Martin added the classes would help participants prepare for job interviews and

look for jobs, “because we want to go beyond merely financially helping families and ensure their hard times are only temporary.” Javier Pacheco, Head of Community Social Services, added the council also plans to “create a social work unit in Torre del Mar in order to serve the whole area.” Zoila Martin said this step will be the first in “decentralising” social services over the next two years, and instead “promoting local services such as the Municipal Women’s Information Centre and Specialised Social Services.” The workshops will begin in July on the first Wednesday of every month from 10am to 11.30am in the Social Welfare Department of Velez Malaga’s Council and from 12pm to 1.30pm at the Social Services Department in Torre del Mar.

COMIC fans aged 15 and over had a chance to share their passion with others at a comic club at Arroyo de la Miel’s library yesterday. The scheme, which is coordinated by the Youth Delegation of Benalmadena Council and Jose Ramon Martinez Berategui, met for the second ever time and aims to allow young people to analyse different styles of graphic novels over its forthcoming sessions. On this occasion, comic book fans discussed “El invierno del dibujante” by Paco Roca, who won the 2008 National Comic Award. The comic, which is set under the dictatorship of Franco, and has as its main characters authors who leave their publishing house to start their own magazine. Their life becomes a metaphor for the dictator’s regime. The director of the Library, Maria del Carmen Martin Lara, has encourage dthe town’s young people to “use this as a leisure space to share their thoughts and interests, in this case in comics.” The new club will be suspended over the summer months and resume in October. by Sally Underwood BENALMADENA’S Council has finished works to Arroyo de la Miel’s Calle Velarde, following an investment of over €185,000. The town’s Mayor, Victor Navas, visited the road, alongside a delegate from the Junta de Andalucia, Miguel Briones, The President of the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol, Margarita del Cid, the delegate for investments, Jose Eduardo Diaz and the Councillor for Urbanisation, Roads and Works, Oscar Ramundo. Mr Navas commented, “the works involved two phases and had an investment of more than €185,000, all of which was funded by Manocomunidad, and aims to improve accessibility for pedestrians in Arroyo de la Miel which in turn always boosts

trade.” He added, "in addition, we have carried out a series of unseen improvements like separating sewage and rainwater pipes and other more visible changes including removing cables and upgrading street lighting.” He said he thanked residents, “for their patience in putting up with the disruption caused by the works.” Councillor Oscar Ramundo said the works to Calle Velarde involved “replacing the pavements, renovating underground infrastructure and asphalting the road, using the same aesthetic look as on Calle Vicente Aleixandre which integrates the road with commercial and residential areas.” He added, "one of the other main objectives of the work was to improve accessibility by removing road barriers that impeded those with reduced mobility and giving pedestrians more space.”

Miguel Briones explained the fund which provided investment for the project was part of a bigger scheme by the Commonwealth to use Junta funds to modernise the Western Costa del Sol, improving its aspect for tourists. He said, “once this year’s general budgets are approved, we will ask for these grants again to improve services in areas which receive the most visitors.” Margarita del Cid said the Commonwealth scheme had allocated around €400,000 of investment to Benalmadena since 2014. She explained, “councils tell us their priorities and we work with them to give them the appropriate funding and we have been impressed with the speed and efficiency of the scheme.” She added the Commonwealth had recently provided the area’s tourist office with new IT equipment.

Pest control FUENGIROLA’S Council has applied biological pesticides to over 17,000 trees and 425,000 square metres of green areas in a move to avoid altering ecosystems. The Councillor for Environment and Green Spaces, Maria Jesus Pascual, said the treatment will kill the various pests affecting the town’s vegetation without using any chemicals. She explained, “we forget trees are living beings and have their own processes and rhythms which can sometimes even be annoying but I would like to remind everyone how important they are for purifying the air, retaining pollutants, producing oxygen…and also providing shade in the summer.” She added, "I think everyone has seen the green zone operators go through the different areas of Fuengirola depositing small boxes in the trees which have insects; this is called biological pest control of pests.” She explained the process involved using beneficial insects to kill off harmful ones. She explained, "harmful insects cause leaf diseases or, in the case of jacarandas, create a brown sticky substance, a kind of resin, that stains the ground and people complain, but the jacarandas are treated and what people see now in the street are the flowers dropping, which they do between Spring and Summer.” She added, “for each treatment 50,000 insects were release, housed in the small boxes perched in the trees,” saying, “by not using toxic products, the worker carrying out the treatment is not at risk, residents are not inconvenienced and it is cheaper and respects the environment while preventing the disproportionate growth of insect populations.”

€1000 handed in by good Samaritan A MUNICIPAL worker in on the Costa del Sol has handed in a wallet containing €950 while on his shift in. Victor Leche Poveda, who works in Almuñécar’s Parque El Majuelo, is now being honoured by the council for his good-deed and will receive an exemplary behaviour note on his work record. Mr Leche Poveda, who found the wallet, which also contained credit cards, in a planter in the botanical-archaeological park, has been in charge of El Majuelo for 14 years, and working for the council since 1980. He commented, "I found the wallet and took it to the Local Police in case its owner claimed it. It is not the first time that I have found valuable items, although it is the first wallet that had €950 in notes in it, but I find mobile phones and cameras all the time.” Victor Leche Poveda: has been praised for his good deed

TRAMS are set to return to the Costa del Sol after Velez Malaga’s Council is considering striking a deal with transport company, Travelsa, to reinstate the town’s service after five years. by Sally Underwood The news comes after a report by the Court of Auditors criticised the line, saying its planning was “insufficient.” It also identified "practices that were not in accordance with the principles of equality, objectivity, transparency and economy in the management of public funds.” The report also said in the initial transport contract from 2005, “no negotiations were carried out with the companies participating in the tender, as would have been mandatory,” and that contracts were amended to “benefit the tenderer.” The town’s Mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, has dismissed the criticisms, saying the report “does not detect illegalities so will not affect” the tram. He claimed the line was still a priority for the council and they are considering rescinding their contract with transport provider Travelsa to free up funds. He explained, “all options are open, nothing is ruled out. Two weeks ago we last met with the concessionaire to assess the draft agreement sent by the Junta de Andalucia to contribute 40% of the transport service’s deficit and next week we have another meeting.” He continued the report, "does not verify illegalities but

simple administrative irregularities, which are they have found because they are looking at decisions made years ago and applying current laws.”

A spokesman for opposition party, Partido Popular, Francisco Delgado, called the repost “scandalous”, however, and says it justified his party’s decision to close the line five years ago.

Man arrested over stabbing A 48-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested for stabbing two bouncers in Los Alamos club in Torremolinos. The man, who slashed the doormen with a razor blade after his younger brother was thrown out of the club, has been placed in the custody of the Judicial Authority, while both bouncers remain in intensive care in Hospital Clinico Universitario. The alleged perpetrator was watching motorcycling with his 39-year-old brother last Sunday when the younger man allegedly became disruptive and was asked to leave at around 8pm. Both brothers exited the club and as the bouncers turned to walk back into the club, the 48-year-old stabbed them in their backs, slashing one guard once and the other twice. The men fled towards the beach where they were confronted and assaulted by a group there. The National Police arrived and arrested the brothers on attempted murder. They are also investigating the assaults on the pair. The younger brother has been released pending charges.

Man dies fruit picking Fugitive caught by Sally Underwood AN 85-YEAR-OLD man has died on the Costa del Sol after falling from the fig tree he was picking fruit on. The man died in Torrox at around 10.15am in his family farm in the Pago de la Boticaria area when he fell three and a half metres from the tree and hit his head on a rock. Local police and health workers attended the scene after the man’s family raised the alarm but were unable to save his life. Elsewhere in the Costa del Sol, a 52-year-old woman has also been injured after falling from her bicycle in Torre del Mar. The cyclist was travelling along the town’s main street when a truck passed close by her, creating a gust of wind which knocked her from her bike. The driver did not stop and was intercepted in Almayate where he tested negative for alcohol and said he had not noticed the woman fall. The cyclist is being treated bruising at the Comarcal Hospital.

Horror crash injures man THREE vehicles have been involved in a crash on the A-357 in Malaga, leaving one man seriously injured and creating miles of traffic jams. The man, who had suffered a brain injury and blood loss from a wound to his arm, was helped by other drivers until the ambulance arrived. Elsewhere, a 46-year-old has died after falling from his motorbike trying to avoid another driver on the Costa del Sol’s A-7 near Nerja. The man, who is known as MLT, died at kilometre 291 just after the tunnel coming from Torrox in the direction of Almeria at 00.15.

A SWISS fugitive has been arrested by the National Police in Torremolinos for identity theft and fraud. The man was wanted for scamming money from bank accounts in Switzerland and Spain, as well as using a false identity and using someone else’s identity to take out credit cards in crimes going back to 2008. He was initially arrested in Torremolinos in 2010 but used a day pass to escape prison and fled. The National Police caught up with him after coordinating with the Swiss Police through the European Network of Active Fugitive Search Teams, an international police channel which allows information to be exchanged.

Man held for trying to hang dog AN UNNAMED man has been arrested for trying to hang his dog in Fuengirola’s Plaza de la Constitucion in broad daylight. The man, who allegedly first to kill the animal with its lead and then with his bare hands, faces charged of animal abuse, while his dog is recovering at an animal shelter. Officers from the National Police arrested the man after receiving calls from concerned members of the public at around 5.45pm saying he was chasing his “terrified” looking dog. The officers then interviewed several witnesses who confirmed the man had tried to kill his animal.

€5 million confiscated over illegal landfill by Sally Underwood OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested 12 people, are investigating 25 others and have confiscated 170 items worth millions of euros following the scandal involving an illegal dumping ground in Nerja’s Rio de la Miel. The investigation, which began in August last year, has uncovered a potential fraud worth €2.5 million case to cover the costs that would have been incurred if the waste had been disposed of legally. The site, which is located in the National Park of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama, to the East of Nerja, was previously a working quarry owned by the council. The area was later used as a dumping ground for 16 years, between 2000 and September 2016. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has labelled the landfill “a genuine environmental disaster” and has been investigating the matter following complaints filed by the Association of Construction and Demolition Waste Management Companies of Andalusia (AGRECA) and by the Spanish Federation of Associations of Construction Waste Management Companies and Demolition, for illegal and uncontrolled dumping of construction and demolition waste, hazardous waste, pruning waste as well as vegetation, plastics.

So far it has been discovered the site was used and managed by a group of companies in Nerja’s construction sector in breach of council rules. These companies were engaged in major collection and transportation of construction and demolition waste, including hazardous wastes, which were subsequently dumped at the illegal landfill site. The police believe those responsible were aware this was illegal and knew about authorised sites in the area. They say the fraudsters even issued certificates to customers guaranteeing the waste had been disposed of legally. The site poses an environmental risk to the protected natural area Sierra Tejeda Natural Park, Almijara and Alhama, with hazards such as fire due to gases produced from the waste, some of which are flammable and at risk of self-combustion. Humans are also at risk from the site, which ran for 15 years without any controls. Investigators say they are also concerned about possible contamination of fluids into the groundwater. Police have detained 12 on charges of alleged crimes against the environment and natural resources, documentary falsification, fraud, membership of a criminal group and environmental crimes. They are continuing to investigate another 25 people, as well as 11 legal entities. It is believed it could cost up to €10,700,000 to clear up the site.

Almogia Resident Wins Novel Award   Almogia resident, Paula Wynne, who appeared on the the BBC Show, Escape to the Continent, showing her and her husband’s quest to live in Spain, so Paula could become a full time writer, has won The People’s Book Prize for best fiction. The People’s Book Prize announced its shortlist with Paula’s debut novel, The Grotto’s Secret competing against twelve other finalists for the fiction prize. The People’s Book Prize 8th Awards Ceremony 2017 celebrated publishers and authors, voted for by the public. This was in the presence of Patron Frederick Forsyth CBE, at a dinner at Stationers’ Hall in London, with Sky News covering the event. Frederick Forsyth, patron of the Prizes, was the guest of honour. After explaining how he wrote The Day of the Jackal, Frederick announced Paula’s thriller as the book voted by readers as their best novel. Moving to Spain fulfilled Paula’s lifelong dream to write novels. The stunning

Heroin dealers jailed By Sally Underwood TWO MEN and one woman, aged between 44 and 53 years old, have been arrested on the Costa del Sol for selling heroin and cocaine. after National Police raided their house in Velez Malaga. National Police caught the three suspects after raiding their house in Velez Malaga under Operation Ordago VII. They have been transferred to the judicial authority, together with the police report. The police started their investigation in March after receiving a tip-off that several people were dealing cocaine and heroin at an address in Barrio de Carabanchel. After busting the property, officers found two people who were living at the home were distributing the narcotics, while the third was acting as an “aguador”, a lookout who is usually using drugs and acts as an informant to the dealers. The agents seized 63 cocaine wraps, five further grams of the drug, 15 heroin wraps, five grams of heroin and €500 in cash. During the course of Operation Ordago VII, which ended in May, officers intercepted 12 drug deals in the Carabanchel area.

Man recovering from fourth storey fall By Sally Underwood A 30-YEAR-OLD man is recovering at Malaga’s Hospital Clinico after falling from the fourth storey of a block of flats in Torremolinos. The man had fallen into the building’s inner courtyard at the building on Calle Rio Riquel at around 11pm after apparently trying to get into a property through a window. Firefighters, Local Police, National Police and health workers all attended the scene, taking the man to hospital.

THE NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a 27-year-old German man on the Costa del Sol, wanted on a European arrest warrant. The man was caught in Torrox for selling thousands of euros of products to ten people over the internet, and then never sending them. He now faces charges of fraud and falsification after committing the crimes in Germany. Police found the man at the beginning of the month and arrested him after discovering his identity.

EU funding for restoration project in Vélez Málaga

Municipal workers have been sprucing up the areas bordering the Cortijo Don Elias, where the event is due to take place. Among the improvements are concreting of tracks, the installation of additional car parking and general maintenance work. The Councillor for Operational Services, Jose Carlos Martin, has visited the works being carried out, explaining, “as is the case every year, municipal workers are undertaking conservation and maintenance work in the fairground area so that it is in the best condition for the various local parties we have planned. We currently have around 20 workers dedicated to this project.” He added a plot of land next to the fairground was also having its earth broken down and compacted to leave it in better condition for being used. The works have been going on for around two weeks and will carry on right up until the event’s start when all the final details will be finished off. The project will also involve the Department for Parks and Gardens, Ferias and Energy Efficiency.

The roof literally fell in on Maureen Hiron by John Smith Disaster ALTHOUGH definitely not a ‘rags to riches’ story, Maureen Hiron’s entire world changed when a ceiling fell on top of her at the age of 32. Up until then, she had been the head of the physical education department at a comprehensive school in London as well as an English international bridge player but when she was pensioned off at this early age because of the accident she feared for her future. New start The brain is a curious part of the body which can sometimes play strange tricks and this blow on the head suddenly brought into play a formerly dormant area which meant that she was able to reason with the intuitive mind of a child, yet still retain her acquired knowledge and high I.Q. level. In 1982, she came up with the concept of a board game Continuo which is a perfect blend of skill and luck which means that a young child can play on equal terms with people of all other ages, providing equal enjoyment to all. Company formation The next step was to form a company to manufacture and market the game which has now enjoyed sale of more than six million in more than 50 countries and her ever questing mind has resulted in the invention of an additional 70 games which are marketed throughout the world. Her experience and change of mental capacity resulted in a BBC TV documentary and she was approached by city financiers to take her company public through what is known as a reverse takeover but then sadly, tragedy struck her yet again. Another set back Maureen was diagnosed with cancer, so her business ambitions couldn’t be brought to fruition, and she needed to expend her considerable energies on ridding herself of the disease but even

whilst an in-patient at the Royal Marsden Hospital she continued to invent games using her fellow patients as guinea pigs. She used her company to produce the game called Chip which raised money for the Royal Marsden Hospital’s £25 million appeal under the then Presidency of Princess Diana, even persuading Margaret Thatcher to be photographed playing it with her at 10 Downing Street. Maureen has written, with her late husband Alan, several best-selling books, including The Ultimate Trivia Quiz Game Book, which reached No.2 in the British bestsellers list and also worked on a number of TV shows, including Krypton Factor and Fifteen To One. Spanish purchase Back in 1990, Maureen was voted Londoner Of The Year in London Electricity’s Brightening Up London awards and it was soon after that she purchased her second home in Spain in Calahonda but sadly her husband Alan died in 1999 and she took over his position as Bridge correspondent for the Independent newspaper which she continued to write until its closing in 2016. While on a Caribbean cruise at the end of 2011, Maureen met Sheyla Bonnick, one of the original members of Boney M. There was immediate friendship and they kept in contact, especially as Sheyla and her husband own a property in Andalucia so it was natural that Sheyla and the rest of her Sounds of Boney M troupe came back to Spain to perform at her Maureen’s 70th birthday party. Musical development Having recently renewed her interest in music, Maureen had installed a concert organ which she was teaching herself to play and together with Sheyla produced an album called Look Beyond. This is an exceptional story which should encourage those who have faced disaster that fate can step in to make even the worst of events an occasional success.

FUENGIROLA’S Council is putting on a free food handling course for those hoping to work in the hospitality business on 28 and 29 June. The workshop will teach basic food hygiene and well as training in allergens. The councillors for Promotion and Development and Employment Carmen Diaz and Ricardo von Wichamnn, have worked together to offer the workshop, which is aimed at those registered in Fuengirola and preferably unemployed and enrolled in the municipal employment programme. Ms Diaz explained, "this is the third course of its type that we have offered in the last month and a half because we believe those who find it difficult to find a job, in this case in the catering sector, should have all the qualifications they need to be employed.” She added, “it is proven that the percentage of unemployed people is directly linked to the percentage of those who have less training so we therefore organise these courses to improve access to qualifications.” She concluded, “we want people to know that although the course is free for them, the cost to the council is €350.” Ricardo von Wichmann commented, "we have no doubt participants will improve their CV and gain the certificates essential to working in the food sector.” It is hoped those attending the training will be able to find jobs in catering companies, nursing homes, schools or canteens. Those interested in registering for the workshops can do so at the Employment Agency in Fuengirola, which is located in the Mayor’s office in Los Boliches.

Music and the arts in Gibraltar by John Smith

CONTINUING the review of things to do when you visit Gibraltar, John Smith looks at entertainment options. For a small community, there is no doubt that Gibraltar ‘punches above its weight’ and has a great deal of entertainment going on throughout the year. If you want to see the latest movies in English, then the relatively recently opened Leisure Cinema in Line Wall Road has four or five films showing every day with the most expensive ticket for a 2d screening being £8 (€9) although there are discounts for early screenings, children and senior citizens. Many bars offer live music as there seem to be a large number of pretty good musicians on the Rock and bar/ restaurants like La Sala on board the Sunborn Yacht Hotel in Ocean Village offer music every night with weekends often seeing tribute artists from the coast and the UK. Gibraltar Music Week which runs from August 29 to September 3 has already announced that Toyah Wilcox and Glen Matlock - one of the original Sex Pistols – will be performing as part of the Rock on

the Rock festival and there will be a special DJ night when current Ibiza based favourite Phoebe d’Abo will be flying in to play with local DJs. These ‘warm up nights’ will prepare locals and thousands of visitors for the MTV Gibraltar Calling Festival at Victoria Stadium on September 2 and 3 which welcomes a score of big names including Clean Bandit, Charlie XCX and Kaiser Chiefs for the annual two day spectacular. For those who prefer slightly more intimate concerts, most years see performances in the beautiful setting of St Michael’s Cave, a world music festival, the International Song Festival which attracts entries from all over the world plus many more performances at special events such as National Day. Classical music is not forgotten and the Gibunco Literary Festival welcomes some of the most popular British writers including politicians, chefs, historians and wits as well as a regular broadcast of BBC 4’s Just a Minute. Whatever type of artistic entertainment you look for, at some stage it will be presented on the Rock.

An interview with Steve Day from Oak Land Furniture Michel EuEsden Managing Director went along to Oak Land Furniture to meet and interview Steve Day Managing Director of Oak Land Furniture Spain. The Euro Weekly News were delighted to be able to get the interview as Steve is not well known to hold them and doesn't like the limelight so it was certainly an exclusive scoop for the coasts number one expat newspaper. MICHEL: Well Steve, here we are at your San Pedro store and I must say it looks magnificent with such a large choice not only of solid oak furniture but also wonderful sofa's too, firstly I would like to say thank you for allowing us this interview as I understand you don't like publicity and interviews, may I firstly ask as it's intriguing why is that? STEVE: Ha ha, straight to the point as always Michel, wouldn't expect anymore from you, but that's why I enjoy my team working alongside the EWN Media Group as it does

exactly what it say's it's going to do. You have a fantastic group of newspapers here in Spain. MICHEL: Thanks for the compliment Steve but you haven't answered my question and this is only my first one! STEVE: I guess I'm quite a shy person deep down but it's more than that, the business is not about me, it's all about the furniture and my great team of employees, without those both the business wouldn't achieve what it does. I often wish wardrobes could talk as they and other items are the real success of the business! At the end of the day if you haven't got the quality product then there's no longevity to your business, rather like your newspaper hey Michel! If you printed rubbish people wouldn't read your newspa-

per, but as we know you deliver a great read and that's why you have been on the coast for so many years! It's the same for my furniture, we deliver a full USP, 100% solid oak throughout the product, building a product that will last the client a lifetime. It's not about me, it's about the furniture and so I like to sit in the background and allow the furniture to stand out and do the talking, customers can come in store and see the quality of product and it stands out. On the shop floor our ethos is the furniture sings out and the store staff just answer questions and explain procedures, we don't employ sales people in effect as the aim is to build the highest quality and designs that stands out. MICHEL: Steve, whilst we are not here to talk about my newspapers thank you again for the compliment, but yes we carry that same ethos within our business. Now can we stick to the questions without the swing back to me! So obviously all this lovely furniture in store, who designs it all and where does it actually come from? STEVE: Well as you can see the cuts of wood that we use to manufacture the furniture are of the highest quality, the wood itself comes from North America from substantial forests complying with all strict EU timber regulations. We use the highest grade which is North American white oak grade 1 on all the natural oak finished ranges. These are the cleanest cuts with the least knots if any and the most beautiful grains. With our rustic oak finishes we use grade 2 as we want the slight blemishes and knots to create the rustic look. Anyway the logs are sent to our factories in both China and Vietnam where 90% of the worlds oak furniture is produced, the factories work to our designs and produce the furniture in mass to ensure the manufacturing process is economical to be able to offer our low retail prices. So for instance we do a production run of double wardrobes and then ship 40 foot sea containers to the warehouse in Swindon of double wardrobes, Swindon warehouse receives on a daily basis around 35-40 containers per day, every day 6 days a week. The designs of our furniture are all exclusive to us and design protected and are all actually designed inhouse by ourselves which I feel we are very good at, but this also saves huge designer fees to which again we pass on the savings to our customers. Designer fees are very large in the industry we are in, so as we all have an eye for design we make some great savings.

MICHEL: So Steve do you go to the Far East yourself to the factories and what's it like there if so? STEVE: In the early days of the business, the answer is yes, probably spent 50% of the year there, as we had to train factories how we expected our furniture quality to be produced. I lived in Dalian which is north China, where the majority of factories are as well as Qingdao, China whilst huge is strange as different products are manufactured in different regions, although we did get down to Shanghai and Beijing many times. North China is beautiful and not how you would imagine, lovely coast line, great sea food and clean air! Over the last few years China has changed so much, I remember the first ever trip back in 2001 and as myself and my travel companion went down for breakfast we didn't like the look of the food as it was quite extreme to say the least, so we decided to stick with what looked hard boiled eggs, the waiter brought them over in a basket with a pair of chops sticks, we knocked the top off the egg to discover the chop sticks were for eating the chick! Thankfully as the years have gone by and the country has become more modern better food is now more available! I don't go as much now as all the production is all built up and as the business has grown, Quality Control teams are all now in place. Vietnam we now use too, they have caught up with the supply market and chain and do a fantastic job as well. In fact in furniture making terms they are now more competitive and trips there are enjoyable, but again less frequent now as QC teams on the ground. Lovely places to visit but now I focus my main time here in Spain in the sunshine as we have a lot of work to do as we progress through Spain, Portugal and France. MICHEL: Yes Steve I saw on your website that delivery options are available to Portugal and France too, was that planned? STEVE: In truth no, it wasn't in the initial plans but when we launched in Spain some 8 months ago now, lots of inquiries came in via the website requesting it and so we set up the delivery infrastructure to incorporate the ex-pats in those countries as well. No point turning away valued business! MICHEL: You haven't hung around there then Steve, so what was the initial plan and why Spain?

STEVE: At my age don't have time to hang around these days Michel! If I was as young as you maybe I would have more time! MICHEL: For someone who claims to be shy you are a bit of a charmer that's for sure! Now back to the question why Spain? STEVE: Firstly I have always loved Spain and it was a good excuse to move here, but more importantly we could see the potential, we had customers on a weekly basis inquiring in the UK operation if we delivered to Spain, at the time we didn't and customers were paying a small fortune to ship the furniture over themselves. So clearly there was a market opportunity and a service to provide. Customers obviously know our product and brands so in realistic terms it made sense. MICHEL: Many people reading this could be thinking about starting a business here themselves, how did you find it to the UK and how different is it? STEVE: Patience is required for starters and few deep breaths at times but overall it's rather much the same although trading patterns are very different to the UK, the main reason being that the ex-pat market is very spread out along the coast in the main so we get less people to the showroom and more through the website, as the ex-pat knows our brands and products from the UK and of course see the UK adverts on TV here in Spain we had to build the infrastructure internally to cover all options to enable us to deliver further distances from our Malaga based warehouse. For instance delivery vans at home go out for a days work but here in Spain they can go out for a weeks work. It took a lot of planning and selecting the correct delivery teams was important too. Yes of course we have the product but we have to back the product up with the service. MICHEL: Yes I agree, the customer should always receive good service, I've taken a look at the reviews on your website and see that you have a 9.8 five star rating on the independent review website Trust Pilot, that's very very impressive! STEVE: I'm sorry it's not impressive enough, it should be 10.10 in my book, but we will achieve it. Yes it's a great score because we work so hard to deliver the full customer service at all times, but I always believe there's always room to improve. Everything is about the customer within our Company. As we cover so many thousands of miles on delivery routes so our customers can enjoy the benefits of our furniture, we have to strive hard and we do with a great delivery infrastructure as well as fantastic communication channels from the team to the customer. MICHEL: So Steve simple question what's your biggest frustration? STEVE: Honestly, foot flow to the store, yes I know that the trading patterns are here different in Spain, but I still can't get my head around it totally, yes I get it's a modern world and people use the internet and website, I get they know our quality product and brand but it still frustrates me, that's probably because I'm used to large store foot flows, the Store Manager Nik probably holds the largest conversion rate ever because everyone who comes to store purchases in the main as they have already done their homework via the web. I guess I'm just an old fashioned retailer but I will always find it strange that a customer will order say from Mijas on the web when the stores only 15 minutes away. I guess it doesn't really make any difference to us but we do like to show off our fantastic products and showroom. Just a personal frustration really, just an age thing I guess! MICHEL: Okay that's your frustrations, but do you have a pet hate?

STEVE: I try not to have them as it's never the end of the world, but there are a few. Advertising Reps calling the store phone number has always been one for 30 odd years now, the phone line is for our customers to inquire about furniture not a free tool for Advertising reps who can't be bothered to call in store and show what they have to offer. It does really wind me up that one especially as the phone line could be engaged whilst a customer is trying to get through. I can't believe that advertising reps can't see its so annoying and reduces their chances of obtaining business! I have to say we don't get it too bad here as we have carefully selected our media partners like yourself Michel but it's a pet hate of many years. Calls have dropped in recent years but at the same time spam emails have gone up which are just as bad. I believe if you have something decent to offer go out and demonstrate and sell it. MICHEL: So with the showroom open in San Pedro, the website clearly fully operational and the delivery structure all in place with deliveries basically going out on a weekly basis across Europe to what appears rapid rate what's next? STEVE: The first thing is always to both maintain and improve where possible standards and customer service. You have to establish solid foundation to ensure when you do further expand you are ready for it and that it doesn't effect current business and customers. We have though launched a website in full Spanish for the Spanish nation, we love Spanish people, their way of life and thank them for allowing us to bring our business to their country, same time I hope they will enjoy and take advantage of of our great product ranges and quality furniture. A very special touch Michele and Steven Saunders IT is amazing how some restaurants can become so successful in such a short time, but perhaps the Little Geranium has the magic touch. Based in La Cala de Mijas and run by recently married couple Michele and Steven Saunders, this high quality yet slightly quirky and very friendly restaurant has created quite a stir thanks to the special quality of former Ready Steady Cook and fine dining chef Steven.

Michele and I have taken the plunge to open our second Geranium opening in July (we hope) located on the Golden Mile in Marbella lots of parking behind the restaurant and easy to find, opposite the Marbella Club Hotel There are a number of things that make a restaurant memorable and Little Geranium ticks all of the boxes, combining creative food, with a personal touch and chic but not overpowering surroundings. Michele who is in charge of front of house and interior design explains that the couple wants to make people feel as if they are entering a house as guests rather than paying customers.

Understandably, she believes that Steven’s concept of serving inventive food made using local ingredients whenever possible is literally bringing guests from far and wide to enjoy his creative dishes. “It also has an open kitchen so that you can see Steven and his team preparing everything and we have a pretty terrace on a really quaint Spanish street amongst Spanish homes and their families, it’s very unique. Oh and lets not forget the amazing food cooked by my husband!” Michelle tells the RTN. Born in South Africa she spent a number of years running Ballet schools in Belfast and she respects and welcomes their Irish guests who seem to be very appreciative of the food that they serve. The restaurant is quite small and is regularly booked out, so they could open seven days a week but their philosophy is that in order to give of their best, they need to be closed for two days to allow themselves to enjoy their life and for them all, including their staff to recharge their batteries. Steven earned his first Michelin star in the UK and now the happy couple are gearing themselves up for a new venture on the Golden Mile in Marbella where Steven will be executive chef and Michele will be the face of this new venture. The chef observes “I want to do at least one more restaurant in this area, Geranium Marbella will be different but the same style of food, a more relaxed environment. We love the atmosphere at the LG but it’s always so busy, it really buzzes, great if you want a lively night out but it’s nice to have the option.

Word order – part 2 Basic Spanish for everyday needs by

As threatened – sorry mentioned – at the end of last week’s article, there are a couple more points to make about word order, before we move on. One is the trick of “inversion” that is switching with word order between subject and verb. This often occurs in the second clause, or section, of a sentence. We have the same phenomenon in English, but in much more restricted circumstances. For example, in a written text we might read: Paul said, “Close the door”. If we turn the sentence round, the usual order would be “Close the door” said Paul. It would be less usual to read “Close the door” Paul said. So you can see that the more usual sentence switches, or inverts, the usual order of subject followed by noun. In Spanish this kind of inversion occurs in a much wider variety of contexts and changes are often to do with which part of the sentence we want to emphasise. Here are just a couple of examples. El jefe llegó a las siete. OR A las siete llegó el jefe. Mis padres siempre iban a la feria OR Siempre iban mis padres a la feria. Now, also on the subject of word order, here’s a question that is especially for those of you who have experienced the joy of teaching English to the Spanish. Why do you think they always say: “I have for breakfast coffee and toast” in answer to the question: “What do you have for breakfast?” I don’t mean, why do they have coffee and toast for breakfast, I mean, why do they always get the word order wrong? Answer at the end of this article. Finally, the sort of thing nobody ever thinks to tell you about word order is to do with proper nouns. “Proper” here doesn’t mean that they know how to hold their knife and fork correctly, it means nouns that represent actual names of things. “Jane” is a proper noun, so is “Spain”, and so is “Atlantic”. The point here is that the word order is often the opposite way round from English. We say “the Atlantic Ocean” the Spanish say “el océano Atlántico” we say “the Red Sea” the Spanish say “el mar Rojo”. However, mountains and rivers are the same “Mount Everest” the Spanish say “el monte Everest”. There’s clearly more to this than meets the eye, but I’ll leave the research to you if you’re really interested. And so finally, why do the Spanish always, and without exception, say “I have for breakfast coffee and toast” instead of “I have coffee and toast for breakfast”? The reason is because they are mentally translating “to have for breakfast” which is the single verb “desayunar”. They’re thinking “desayuno café y tostada” and that’s the order it comes out in English: “I have for breakfast … coffee and toast”. All of which just goes to show how we speak in the order of the words of our language native.

Truth Hurts by Janet Waters.

She soon left Wales and headed for London, joining her sister Joyce but that didn’t last either so by 1939 she found herself returning to South Wales, joining the Land Army and then the NAAFI in Tripoli where she met the love of her life, Chad Munroe who was known as the biggest flirt on the camp, an American soldier. This period in time proved to be a happy one for Nellie, she was one of the crowd, enjoying the hilarity and banter. She made her singing and performing debut as one of The Mad Macaroons and soon became romantically associated with Chad, dreaming of a future life with him. It didn’t work out though: “What a mess. I thought everything was too good to be true. I should have known better, good things don’t happen to me.” By 1949 Nellie then returned to Berkshire, met Gerald and they married. He was second best to Chad. Chad held her heart. Now in 2006, Nellie knows that time is running out and she must confess a secret, a shocking secret to her daughter that will devastate her. “Everything was going horribly wrong; her world was crashing around her.” It’s at this point that Alison realises just how much the truth hurts. Worth a read.

The story spans almost 90 years taking us from 1919, post first world war era with all its hardships and through the second world war to 2006 where we witness Nellie’s birth (real name Ellen) when tragically her mother Jessie died leaving a brood of children to the eldest girl, Rose to bring up in a 3 bedroom terrace house seen as part of the wages for working down the pit. We begin in a mining village in South Wales. The story has a historical backdrop to it and there are touches of autobiography emerging, otherwise it is a romantic story about unrequited love and guilt. We begin in the present, the year is 2006 and Nellie is 87. Her health has declined rapidly and her one and only dutiful daughter, Alison is making one of her regular visits to Fir Trees Residential Home, maintaining a patience and tolerance rarely seen. The reason will soon become apparent. Nellie has not being able to express any love for her daughter and as her health fails her she is full of apologies for being a neglectful and careless mother, trying to explain the reasons why to her daughter. “I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve a daughter like you .I’m so unhappy. I know I haven’t been a good mother to you.” She asks Alison to forgive her: “Please don’t think badly of me. I’m an old lady now, time is passing me by. I know I’ve done wrong and it’s important you know everything before I move on to pastures new.” Euphemistically speaking. Alison has been living with her partner Graham for 16 years. Alison which compensated for an

unloving mother. It upset Alison knowing that her mother seemed indifferent to Alison’s happy life with Graham. “ You’d think she’s be pleased that her daughter was happy and had found someone to take care of her. Why does she always get such pleasure in hurting me?” Graham nicknamed Nellie TOB short for The Old Bat. Nellie had been cruel to Alison telling her the reason why she had her: “I only had a child so that there would be someone to look after me in my old age.” It hurt Alison who had not felt the need to have children of her own. Now she was too old to have children so it was no longer an option for her. Through story-telling devices where Nellie talks through her childhood and adulthood to Alison we glean her colourful past, shrouded in sadness and isolation. There were ten of them living at home. Freddie, one of the boys had died at the age of seven from tuberculosis. Emrys, the father worked at the colliery with two of the older boys. We also know that money was tight and Rose had to leave school in order to bring up the family and look after the home. Her main role was in trying to keep the family together. Nellie was 4 when there was an explosion at the pit killing her father and brother Edwin as well as many others in the village. It was like the 1895 disaster. Arthur survived but was diagnosed with black lung disease. More insecurity befell Nellie when she was moved to a farm living with her uncle and aunt, helping with the cows and livestock before being pampered with an Aunt Tilly and Aunt Beatrice, two lesbian women. this didn’t last long and she was soon returned to Penbryn farm. An episode of scarlet fever and Nellie was hospitalised for a number of weeks.

Is Morocco the new Libya? by

As consequence of NATO adding Libya to its regime changing agenda Europe suffers the worst population displacement, civil disquiet and ethnic cleansing since World War II. Europe’s cities are now frontline war zones. Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, says that if you live in a city terrorism comes with the territory. Since NATO’s reckless overthrow of its elected government Libya has descended into a hell on earth. Before being toppled the tribal-council elected Gaddafi turned Libya into the richest of Africa’s 54 nations. In 2011 he stressed that NATO’S actions would vomit millions of African refugees across the fair face of Europe. He was right; Italy a short sea distance from anarchic Libya, is now the main refugee door into Europe. Déjà vu: Morocco may soon endure its own U.S inspired Arab Spring. Brace! Brace! The placid good life of coastal Spain could soon experience a waterborne invasion from migrants lured by easy-pickings thrown from Brussels banqueting tables. Morocco is closer to Costa coastlines than are Libya to Italy’s. In parts the sea can be crossed in a jolly boat. But, the prospects for residents here are far from jolly. The social and economic fallout from a Moroccan collapse into chaos hardly bears thinking about. According to Russian media, ‘on-going protests in Morocco, now being compared to the ‘Arab Spring’ in 2011, could hit with renewed vigour this summer.’ Salah al Wadia, who leads the ‘Moroccan Movement of Conscience’, says “the anti-government demonstrations are getting out of control and becoming threatening.” The onset of the so-called Arab Spring early in 2011 heralded a domino style collapse of many Middle East

and African nations. With its genesis in Tunisia the civil unrest spread like a cancer across Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. U.S General Wesley Clark notoriously conceded: “We are going to take out seven countries in five years; Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Iran.” The instigators of these Arab Spring revolutions and subsequent regime changes were U.S backed and NATO executed. The cheerleaders are the government

influenced mainstream media who bullhorn fake news, censor and launder NATO’s dirty washing. Serbia is likely to sue NATO for its 1999 regime-changing airstrikes. Moroccan Rashid Belzaar, Editor-in-Chief of Morocco’s Voice of the North, says the situation has worsened after the arrest of radical Nasser Zefrafi, anti-corruption leader of the protest movement. If civil unrest in Morocco leads to NATO involvement our entire way of life here in Spain could be threatened.

The way I see it... In the early hours on the morning of the June 9th, the lights in the Conservative Party HQ flickered and dimmed, this coincided with a large crack that appeared in the ceiling of the committee meeting room. Theresa May brushed dust out of her greying hair and off her shoulders, as she hurriedly left the building. Had there been an earthquake? After all the background rumblings going on amongst Conservative Ministers it is no wonder the disturbances had loosened the footings in this once great Establishment. Jeremy Corbyn, known now as the come-back Kid, had managed to delivered several heavy blows against the bobbing and weaving of the once powerful Conservatives heavyweights, after he had almost been written off by his own party. If only Theresa May had swung her bag more often at her weak kneed ministers, like Maggie Thatcher had done, we would not now be sitting biting our nails as a hung Parliament threatens Britains stance on Brexit. I think I can hear more rumblings from the European Union HQ, as many MEPs are dancing a jig not on the Conservatives grave, but the outcome of Election. There are several reasons why the PM’s manifesto failed to invigorate her supporters. She had bobbed and weaved this way then that way, one day she would announce a policy, then the following day rescind it, this is not what the voters expected or wanted. Another reason for her failure to capture a larger portion of voters is that she failed to reach out to the younger people of the country, who turned out in larger numbers more than normal, and the views of the anti-Brexiteers. So what is the face saving answer Mrs May find in her HQ’s ruins? The DUP have agreed to throw in their seats to bolster Theresa May’s slim majority in the Commons. This is not the ending she was hoping for. Not a victory by any means not even a draw, or a knock out, a split decision win. She was driven to Buckingham Palace to tell the Queen that she is going to form a new Government, bruised and battered from the punch up, she could easily retire and live a more measured life, but no this Lady was not for turning like the previous female Prime Minister. She has decided one more fight, maybe fighting at another weight slimming down her policies to a more palatable diet for her supporters. Now Jeremy Corbyn has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of his own disruptive Ministers who had talked down Jeremy’s chances in the Election, mainly behind his back and sometimes in public his ministers had derided him, some had betted on him losing heavily, however Jeremy with his Trotsky views and his venom against May’s right of centre Party had catapulted him into the split decision. So let's analyse the outcome, Theresa May will try to tackle Brexit from a diminished position, will she be strong enough to take on the European Union with the slim majority that she has, no doubt the MEP ministers will remind her time and time again about her weakness in Britain, I wish her luck she will need it. This was the day May almost fell in June.

How many people out there can remember the funeral of Winston Churchill? Judging by the number of us in the queue at the health clinic this morning, clutching our plastic jars containing dubious fluids, my guess would be quite a lot. I recall it was a time of genuine national grief and a cause for reflection that without this man, there would have been a very different future in store for all of us. And who could forget the poignant moment when the cranes at the London docks were dipped in salute as the great man passed slowly by. He was an unremarkable and at times, deeply unpopular peace time politician, but a colossus in time of war. He was born for the moment and a man of his time In the Cotswolds recently we put aside a morning to pay our respects to Sir Winston, whose tomb can be found at the peaceful churchyard in the village of Bladon, not far from Blenheim Palace the ancestral home

of the Dukes of Marlborough and the Churchill family. It’s a pretty little church, tucked away in a cul-de-sac some way from the main village road and is the perfect location as a final resting place. But as I sat absorbing the ambience of that peaceful setting, enveloped in the sunshine and bird song, it prompted me to consider - where are the heroes we need today? Who within the ranks of the current political rabble, could step forward to unravel the mess that is stifling our once proud country? We have a leader who at times appears to be completely out of her depth and as recent events illustrated, has a delivery that resembles a third rate actress stumbling over her lines. And the arrogance and stupidity in alienating a large block of elderly core voters immediately prior to a general election defies belief. And what of the alternatives? A man who in the past has embraced terrorists in the belief that they are simply misunderstood and have good reason to kill and maim innocent civilians. Or another who boasted post election that he had increased the number of MP’s for his party by 50%. Impressive, but 50% of eight is only four and that is hardly a Guinness Book of Records event. God help us, because it looks now as if there is no one else who can.

By John Smith SANDRO MORELLI opens his restaurant Villa Tiberio in Marbella once a year to raise money for Children with Cancer UK and this year collected nearly €45,000. This isn’t the only charity he supports but over 10 years he and a dedicated group of people who care have raised more than €400,000 for this cause alone. Most parents expect to die before their children, but cancer doesn’t take any notice of age, religion or position and strikes wherever and whenever it wants so anything that can be done to alleviate the situation for those who are just starting out in life has to be laudable. It was mainly British expatriates who made sure that this was a complete sell out and they enjoyed a great evening of music and dining whilst putting their hands in their pockets to ensure that the money flowed. From the cost of each meal, which was certainly of high standard, with no shortage of wine, €25 was donated to the charity and this was matched by the generosity of diners who bid for items in the auction and also a raffle. Local resident Sir Michael Smurfit was unable to attend as he was out of the country but did make a substantial donation to this worthy cause and many fine local entertainers as well as Master of Ceremonies Steve Cline gave up their time to support the evening. An unexpected guest was a very convincing who Donald Trump appeared on stage to chat with the audience about his world and what he knew of Marbella. In fairness, it wasn’t the real Donald but impressionist Lewis MacLeod, the new voice of Postman Pat and Sebulba from Star Wars The Phantom Menace who flew over especially to help raise funds for the charity. Accompanying him was Producer and Financier Ed Crozier, President of the Scottish Rugby Union and one or two other faces, known for their charitable support were recognised in the audience but every person there should be proud that they helped to raise funds to make life a little better for children in need. Thanks are due to Sandro and his cheerful staff, all of the fabulous singers as well as Caroline Randerson, Barbara Fernando and their team of lady volunteers for all the work that they put in to make this yet another memorable night at Villa Tiberio.

Biomarket hits Fuengirola THIS Sunday, Fuengirola Marina will be transformed into a environmentally friendly market from 11am with the townâ€™s latest biomarket. The event, which is held on the first and third Sunday of each month sells organic and Fair Trade food, as well as specialist foods for those with allergies, handicrafts made from recycled products and well as natural products and free activities. This Sunday there will be a free yoga class from 11.30am, for which it is recommended participants bring a towel and mat, and an om chanting workshop, designed to promote wellbeing and relaxation. Gazpacho… the ultimate summer soup I remember many years ago, being in Spain on holiday with friends in Ibiza. We were all still a little naïve and in awe of Spanish food, so were pretty limited in what we ordered in restaurants. One evening, we were invited out to dinner in a traditional Spanish restaurant with some older acquaintances of our friends, who had apparently been holidaying abroad for years, so knew what to order. At the restaurant, the acquaintance took over the ordering of food, choosing food for everyone, including a starter of gazpacho soup. When our soup arrived, bearing in mind we were in the middle of July, we all took a taste and were a little surprised, but also intrigued, by the tangy bowl of ice cold tomato s o u p , filled with chopped vegetables. However, our ‘sophisticated’ acquaintance was furious that our soup had hung around the kitchen so long it had

Gazpacho recipe (serves four to six) INGREDIENTS 1 thick slice of bread (most people don’t use the crust, I do) 1 red pepper, deseeded and cut into quarters 1 kilo ripe plum tomatoes, quartered and hard white parts removed 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed 2 tablespoons of white wine vinegar 6 tablespoons of olive oil salt METHOD Roast the bread in a frying pan without any oil, until the bread has dried, but has not browned yet. Turn the bread around once. Mince the bread to breadcrumbs in a blender, set apart. Cream the pepper in a blender or food processor. Then add the tomatoes, salt and garlic and cream. Mix in the oil, vinegar and breadcrumbs. Taste and add more salt if necessary, or add water if the soup is too creamy. Poor into a serving bowl cover and let the soup chill in the fridge for at least an hour. gone cold. Repeat this a few times. • This will ensure that everything is well mixed. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice and garnish with a celery stick, lemon wedge, tomatoes and olives to serve.

Water, water everywhere We all know that we need to drink more water, particularly in the hot summer months, when we sweat more and dehydration becomes a danger. However, water is present in many other foods and liquids, so we may actually be getting enough without actually realising it. Think of water as a nutrient your body needs that is present in liquids, plain water, and foods. All of these are essential daily to replace the large amounts of water lost each day. Fluid losses occur continuously, from skin evaporation, breathing, urine, and stool, and these losses must be replaced daily for good health. When your water intake does not equal your output, you can become dehydrated. Fluid losses are accentuated in warmer climates, during strenuous exercise, in high altitudes, and in older adults, whose sense of thirst may not be as sharp. Here are a few reasons to make sure you're drinking enough water or other fluids every day: 1. DRINKING WATER HELPS MAINTAIN THE BALANCE OF BODY FLUIDS Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature. Through the posterior pituitary gland, your brain communicates with your kidneys and tells it how much water to excrete as urine or hold onto for reserves. When you're low on fluids, the brain triggers the body's thirst mechanism. And unless you are taking medications that make you thirsty, you should listen to those cues and get yourself a drink of water, juice, milk, coffee -anything but alcohol. Alcohol interferes with the brain and kidney communication and causes excess excretion of fluids which can then lead to dehydration. 2. WATER CAN HELP CONTROL CALORIES For years, dieters have been drinking lots of water as a weight loss strategy. While water doesn't have any magical effect on weight loss, substituting it for higher calorie beverages can certainly help. Food with high water content tends to look larger, its higher volume requires more chewing, and it is absorbed more slowly by the body, which helps you feel full. Waterrich foods include fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups, oatmeal, and beans.

3. WATER HELPS ENERGIZE MUSCLES Cells that don't maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes shrivel, which can result in muscle fatigue. When muscle cells don't have adequate fluids, they don't work as well and performance can suffer. Drinking enough fluids is important when exercising. Follow the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for fluid intake before and during physical activity. These guidelines recommend that people drink about 17 ounces of fluid about two hours before exercise. During exercise, they recommend that people start drinking fluids early, and drink them at regular intervals to replace fluids lost by sweating. 4. WATER HELPS KEEP SKIN LOOKING GOOD Your skin contains plenty of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. But don't expect over-hydration to erase wrinkles or fine lines. Dehydration makes your skin look more dry and wrinkled, which can be

improved with proper hydration. But once you are adequately hydrated, the kidneys take over and excrete excess fluids. You can also help "lock" moisture into your skin by using moisturizer, which creates a physical barrier to keep moisture in. 5. WATER HELPS YOUR KIDNEYS Body fluids transport waste products in and out of cells. The main toxin in the body is blood urea nitrogen, a water-soluble waste that is able to pass through the kidneys to be excreted in the urine, explains Guest. Your kidneys do an amazing job of cleansing and ridding your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is adequate. When you're getting enough fluids, urine flows freely, is light in color and free of odor. When your body is not getting enough fluids, urine concentration, color, and odor increases because the kidneys trap extra fluid for bodily functions. If you chronically drink too little, you may be at higher risk for kidney stones, especially in warm climates.

Driving around recently, it’s hard to not pass a runner, or jogger pounding the pavement, beachfront or walking trail. Whether they are in full technical kit and expensive running shoes, with their phone recording every stride, or jogging along in a baggy old T-shirt and beach shorts, you can see them at all times of the Spanish day and night. Running is cheap, easy and reduces the risk of heart disease and early deaths, but do the health benefits outweigh those from other activities, such as walking, cycling or swimming? Well, the answer is yes, because, according to a review of evidence in the journal Progress in Cardiovascular Disease, runners live three years longer than non-runners. You don’t even have to run fast, or for long, to see a benefit and you can drink, smoke, be overweight and still reduce your risk of dying early by running, by between 25% and 40%. The authors of the review say that no other exercise has such an impact, an hour of running will, statistically speaking, increase your life expectancy by seven hours. While running regularly can’t make you immortal, the review says it is more effective at prolonging life than walking, cycling or swimming. Two of the authors of the review were also involved in a study published in 2014 that found a mere five to 10 minutes a day of running, at less than six miles an hour, reduced the risk of heart disease and early deaths from all causes. Running is cheap, you can’t fake it, putting one foot in front of the other is easy and it’s always energetic. Even a jog counts as moderately vigorous exercise and even if you are time poor, you need run for only half the time to get the same benefits as other sports. Angelique Brellenthin, of the department of kinesiology at Iowa State University, one of the review’s authors, says it takes 105 minutes of walking to yield the same benefits as a 25-minute run.

There are tragic but rare deaths during races, but non-runners are twice as likely to die from sudden heart attacks and strokes as runners. Brellenthin says that runners have higher levels of aerobic fitness, lower levels of body fat and smaller waists than those who do other activities. Running may be particularly good at shifting abdominal fat too and unless you have a badly positioned kneecap, won’t be too hard on your knees. You only need to do 30 to 60 minutes a week to reap the benefits, so

WHAT IS NARCOLEPSY? Do you fight to stay awake during the day? Is exhaustion part of your everyday life? If the urge to sleep is overwhelming and irresistible, it may be a sleep disorder called narcolepsy. Microsoft debuts Xbox One X Ahead of the E3 games show in Los Angeles, Microsoft recently unveiled the latest games console in its line-up - a more powerful version of the Xbox One called the Xbox One X. To be released on 7 November, the Xbox One X will cost £449 (€509) in the UK. The system, which runs games at 4K ultraHD and 60 frames-per-second (fps), was labelled ‘the most powerful console ever made’ by Phil Spencer, head of Xbox. It is also the smallest Xbox yet. It joins the Xbox One S - a slimmer version of the Xbox One that supports 4K video streaming - in the roster of consoles that make up Microsoft’s latest console generation. Sony, too, has a console with 4K capabilities - the PS4 Pro - which it released in November last year.

However, the PS4 Pro’s specifications -

including memory and processor speed - are lower than those of the Xbox One X.

It boasts 12 gigabytes of RAM to the PS4

Pro’s 8 gigabytes, for example and 6 teraflops of graphics processing power compared to 4.12.

Plus, unlike Sony’s machine, Microsoft’s is

able to play 4K ultra-HD Blu-ray discs.

However, while the Xbox One X is capable

of supporting virtual reality gaming, there was almost no mention of this during the presentation and no demonstrations of games that use VR headsets.

The console will also be immediately

compatible with all existing Xbox One games. It will ‘scale up’ games not made at 4K resolution to enhance their visuals.

The app will organise your plane tickets and hotel reservations, offer editorial guides to more than 200 cities and make personalised recommendations based on your Google history. Best of all, Trips works offline: you can download everything to your phone before you leave, including maps and walking directions — sparing you from having to use an expensive international data plan. Trips requires you to log in with your Google account. Once you’ve signed in, you will be presented with a

list of your upcoming and previously completed trips. Tap into a future trip and you’ll find a colourful grid of options to explore. Reservations organises your flights, hotel information, and any rental car reservations you may have made. “Need to Know” has useful information about getting from the airport to the centre of the city, the local currency and what to do in case of an emergency. The heart of the app is Things to Do, which builds custom itineraries based on how long you’ll be in town, popular destinations and anything that you’ve previously starred or saved on a Google service. If you’ve got your cellular connection active, Trips will pull in real-time information about which destinations are open or closed. It will also make adjustments based on time of day and weather — if it starts raining, for example, the app will recommend indoor activities. And if you want an I’m Feeling Lucky-style recommendation for your day, tap the big red ‘magic wand’ button and Google will offer you a random highlight from the city.

Online car part ordering outstrips cosmetics The UK’s car servicing and repair sector grew again in 2016, with turnover rising 2.4% to £21.6 billion, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Growth was primarily driven by sustained record numbers of new car registrations, and greater reliability, leading to more vehicles remaining on British roads for longer but still requiring regular servicing and maintenance. The increasing level of advanced technology in modern vehicles was also a major influencing factor. New research, commissioned by SMMT from independent consultancy Frost & Sullivan, shows that in 2016, UK motorists increased their annual spending on car maintenance by 1.7% to an average of £707. This was due, in part, to the replacement of more high tech components, which require new skills and equipment to fit. While tyres, lubricants and filters are still the most commonly replaced items, the research shows that demand is rising fastest for telematics devices and tyre pressure monitoring sensors.2 The performance figures highlight the sector’s significant contribution to the UK economy. In 2016, the UK automotive aftermarket, which includes parts makers, distributors, retailers and workshops, grew its contribution to the economy by 2.5% to £12.5 billion and created 1,400 new jobs. The total number of livelihoods supported by the sector now stands at some 347,000 – more than the population of Coventry. The increasing digitalisation of cars and components presents challenges and opportunities to the sector as it strives to keep pace with advanced vehicle technology, data driven servicing and the changing needs of motorists. The research shows that British motorists are also leading the way in online car maintenance, with one of the fastest adoption rates in Europe. Last year, UK consumers bought a higher percentage of automotive parts, accessories and services online than they did cosmetics and groceries. Together they spent some £920 million on items such as tyres, brakes and batteries, and by 2022 this is forecast to rise by more than three quarters to £1.65 billion. There is also consumer appetite for connected services such as vehicle health reports, fault detection and recall alerts, all of which make it easier to maintain cars. The research identifies growing interest in emerging forms of mobility such as car sharing schemes, forecast to attract some 2.3 million members

worldwide by 2025, and e-hailing. Consumers are also increasingly turning to other digital services for their maintenance needs and online comparison websites, common in the insurance and finance sectors, are now entering the aftermarket. An estimated 100,000 people in the UK are currently using these sites to compare workshop offerings and prices, and this is set to grow significantly. This all makes clear the need for aftermarket companies to continue adapting their business models, and increasing their investment in mobile platforms to remain competitive. Road Test - Citroen C4 Picasso

I can’t think of any cars that are officially named after notable people other than the manufacturers themselves. That is until I find myself driving the Citroen C4 Picasso. It’s quite a compliment to the world famous artist and I’d never given it an ounce of thought until now. The difficulty with such a decision is that it must live up to the high and exacting standards of its namesake. It all falls apart if it doesn’t. Picasso’s name first appeared on the Xsara back in 1999. Picasso, the Spanish born painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright spent most of his adult life in France so it is a great gesture to name a vehicle after him. Incidentally, his most expensive painting entitled Nude, Green Leaves and Bust, created in the span of just a single day in 1932, sold for more than £85m. I wonder why Spanish car company Seat didn’t beat Citroen to it and name one of their vehicles after the great man. Naming this people mover after the famous painter is arguably apt because twice married he had four children so this sizeable vehicle would have been much appreciated by him, I reckon. It is also well designed, pleasing to look at from the side especially with its alloy wheels and it boasts quite a striking front so the design aspect should also have received his thumbs up. With its large boot that easily swallows a pushchair and travel cot as well as food shopping there is enough space on the floor at the rear for any additional luggage. And there always is when the Saunders family go on a jaunt. Three child seats are easily accommodated in the back and Harriett (5) and Heidi (6) do like the folding picnic tables complete with night time reading light. They also have controls for their own air vents. The large boot lid itself opens and shuts unaided; simply click the proximity key. Driver and front passenger are happy because their seats not only have folding armrests they also come with a massage facility. The one thing I find difficult to come to terms with though is the lack of a speedometer in front of the steering wheel meaning that the driver has to glance at the centre console to see the speedometer. With so many speed cameras around these days I find myself frequently doing this. With its responsive diesel unit and six speed manual gearbox that on occasions is given to notchy indecisive gear changes, it will quickly reach speed limits so it is just as well it is fitted

with a speed limiter and cruise control. Engine start/stop kicks in at the traffic lights helping with fuel economy. There are mixed feelings about the sat nav because on one journey I find that I can actually rely on it to get me out of the depths of the Dorset countryside without a hitch. But on another occasion it is of absolutely no use whatsoever when in the New Forest. Surely it allows for a postcode to be inputted but try as I might I cannot make it work. Thankfully we have a map. The C4 has an electric handbrake and as we are stuck in a traffic jam on a hill of all places, on one of Dorset’s main roads, I am surprised and reassured to see that when the handbrake is released the vehicle still holds itself in place with no rolling whatsoever so that I can select first gear and move off without breaking into a sweat. With a ride height taller than even some 4x4s the C4 is a capable motorway cruiser and overtaker. Nearing the end of my test I

suddenly recall another vehicle that celebrated a notable individual and that was the Churchill tank from the Second World War. Citroen has really hit on a great idea here and more manufacturers should follow suit with this excellent form of commemoration, in my opinion. I can see it now: the Jaguar Thatcher, the Range Rover Bowie or the Rolls Royce Nelson.

Advertising does sell new cars The annual New Car Code of Practice survey conducted by The Motor Ombudsman, the automotive dispute resolution provider, has found that around a quarter (24%) of consumers are swayed in their choice of new car as a result of seeing an advert online, on TV or in print. The annual study looks at the buying experience and satisfaction of motorists who have visited a franchise dealer belonging to any of the 38 vehicle manufacturers that are accredited to The Motor Ombudsman’s Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)-approved New Car Code of Practice. Its comprehensive Motor Industry Code covers over 99% of all new car purchases in the UK. The research, which polled nearly 2,400 people, showed that male buyers and 17 to 25 year olds are more inclined to take the plunge after seeing a commercial; whilst those approaching their thirties and motorists aged 40 to 55 are less likely to act on impulse. Overall, the

research found that 93% of cars that the survey participants bought matched the content of the advert, whilst respondents scored an encouraging average of 4.8 out of a maximum 5.0 for their satisfaction with their vehicle, with the over 65s proving amongst the happiest with their car. Customers also gave manufacturers a total tally of 4.7 where further assistance was needed. When asked specifically about their purchase, the condition of the vehicle in which they received it, ranked highest in the study at 4.8, with the assistance and knowledge of sales staff considered impressive by motorists at 4.7 overall, which mirrored last year’s findings. The explanation of terms and conditions of the warranty achieved the lowest score of 4.5, which also echoed the result seen in the 2015 survey. from a brand encouraging them to buy a product. Although the lure of advertising can prove a powerful influencer when choosing a car, it is important for motorists to check, for added peace of mind, that the retailer is accredited to a recognised CTSI-approved Code of Practice, such as that offered by The

Motor Ombudsman. The study clearly shows the value of franchise dealers and vehicle manufacturers adhering to a Code, as scores have once again remained consistently high across the board, which is undoubtedly a very positive trend for consumers and the industry.”

Dude …. Where’s my Ferrari A millionaire rogue landlord has had his £200,000 Ferrari seized and CRUSHED by police. Businessman Zahid Khan, 30, said his supercar was confiscated by West Midlands Police after he was stopped by officers on April 5. He infamously parked the Ferrari 458 Spider on the pavement outside Birmingham Crown Court at a conviction appeal the month before. The supercar obsessed trainee pilot contacted says he turned up at court to discover his beloved car had been destroyed. Wealthy landlord Khan, who runs a garage said “I have been trying to get my car back from the police. “I turned up at Birmingham Crown Court this morning and was really angry to hear it had been destroyed. I can’t believe it. “My legal team told the police that we would go to the High Court to get the car back.” Khan said his vehicle was confiscated on April 5 and claimed he was told he was being stopped because police suspected the car was stolen. He said he was arrested and handcuffed at the scene and his car seized. He told the Birmingham Mail he had bought the cherished car from a large auction company, via a middleman, last year and spent “a lot of time and money’’ on the vehicle. He said: “I ordered parts from Ferrari and had them fitted by a Ferrari approved garage in Birmingham. “The police told me they did not believe that the car was mine and that I had to prove ownership. “I have been trying to get my car back ever since, trying to prove that it did not include stolen parts and that I was the owner. “Then we go to Birmingham Crown Court this morning

and find that the car has been destroyed. “But I did not know anything about that and I can’t believe they have destroyed my car.” West Midlands Police confirmed to the Birmingham Mail that officers had stopped Khan on April 5. It also confirmed that the force had applied to a judge at Birmingham Crown Court for an amendment to an existing asset restraining order which resulted in the Ferrari no longer being a restrained asset. A spokeswoman said the car was crushed last week because it had no valid insurance and was a Category B vehicle - which are officially classed as unroadworthy, meaning the shell has to be destroyed. After learning his car’s fate, Khan expressed his anger. He said: “I love supercars and have owned a number of them and loved this car. “I bought it to do it up as a hobby and when I finished it was worth over £200,000.” The businessman was exposed as a rogue landlord in December after forcing tenants out of his luxury Birmingham home. He was ordered to carry out 150 hours of community service after forcing out six professionals who had rented his sprawling property in Moseley. He later appealed the conviction, turning up to court in the white Ferrari 458 Spider, which he claims is worth more than £200,000. He parked the eye-catching vehicle on the pavement outside Birmingham Crown Court during the appeal hearing. That hearing upheld three of the charges - interfering with the peace and comfort of tenants, failing to provide adequate smoke alarms, and failing to obtain an HMO licence for the

property. But the court dismissed the other three - failing to ensure the property was kept in good and clean decorative repair, failure to ensure the internal structure of the property was maintained in good repair, and failure to ensure that any fixtures, fittings or appliances were maintained in good repair. Following the appeal, Khan was ordered to pay an extra £2,000 on top of the previous £5,700 he was told to pay.

Hybrids reach 100,000 UK landmark The popularity of electric cars in the UK has shot up over the last few years, with more than 100,000 plug-in vehicles on the road, compared with just 3,500 in 2013. This huge increase in electric cars in 2017 has come about because of a greater level of choice for drivers, a shift in the public’s attitude towards electric cars and a constantly improving public recharging network. Combined, this means that UK electric car buyers have a greater selection of vehicles to choose from than ever before. This six-figure landmark builds on the record electric car registrations in 2016, a year in which volumes rose 29% on the previous 12 months. From January to December, motorists flocked to buy electric vehicles in record numbers, with 36,907 electric vehicles registed in the UK. As thousands of motorists switched-on to the cost saving and convenience of electric motoring, public and

business appetite for plug-in hybrid and pure electric cars reached a new high. An ever-increasing selection of electric cars is playing a key role in plug-in vehicle uptake surpassing record levels, Go Ultra Low suggests. Today, more than 35 plug-in models are available to UK motorists – four times the number on the market just five years ago – with yet more new versions set to be launched later this year. Poppy Welch, Head of Go Ultra Low, said: “Year after year, we see record levels of electric vehicle registrations as more and more motorists realise the cost-saving and environmental benefits of driving a plug-in electric car. With ongoing government incentives and increasing product choice we expect this trend to continue.” Plug-in hybrid uptake was particularly strong in 2016 as annual registrations rose 41.9%, with in-demand models such as the BMW 330e, Volkswagen Golf GTE and Audi A3 Sportback e-tron among the most popular. Every quarter in 2016 produced a yearon-year improvement, while the accumulative registrations total for all electrically powered cars now rests at 87,158. The broad variety of hybrid and pure electric cars on the market is a marked improvement on the eight electric models available to drivers in 2011 when government introduced the Plug-in Car Grant. The range of products now extends to more than 20 pure electric and 15 hybrid vehicles, from city cars and SUVs to sports cars and family hatchbacks. Go Ultra Low exists to help motorists understand the benefits, cost savings and capabilities of the raft of electric vehicles on the market. Nadal achieves ‘La Decima’ An emotional Rafael Nadal described his 10th French Open title as the perfect end to a perfect fortnight after he made history at Roland Garros on Sunday. The Spaniard, 31, won 6-2 6-3 6-1 to secure 'La Decima' at Roland Garros, and his 15th major title. Nadal, who won without dropping a set in the tournament for the third time, said he could not have imagined such success when he first won 12 years ago. Victory against Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland made him the first man to win any of the grand slam events 10 times. “This has been, I think, a perfect Roland Garros for me,” said Nadal, who dropped just 35 games in total on his way to a 15th grand slam title but his first for three years. Shown a montage of his 10 victories before the trophy presentation, a clearly moved Nadal, said the historic nature of the triumph added to his satisfaction. “It is true that this one is going to be one of the more special for the number, for what happened on the ceremony after the final, for so many things,” he said. “And because I am 31 already and not a kid any more, today was a very important day for me.”

Lois dives to gold Football is back British diver, Lois Toulson won European Championship gold in the 10m platform as she finalises her preparations for next month's World Championships. The 17-year-old scored 330.70 in Kiev to finish ahead of Russian duo Anna Chuinyshena (326.90) and Iuliia Timoshinina (313.30). "To be honest, I did not expect this victory," said Toulson. "I am not totally satisfied with my dives yet." The World Championships take place in Budapest, Hungary from 14 July. Toulson is expected to compete both individually and with Tonia Couch in the synchronised event.

The Premier League fixtures for 2017/18 have been released with champions Chelsea hosting Burnley on day one as Antonio Conte’s Blues fight to retain the title. Chelsea kick-start their title defence at home to Burnley on the first day of the new Premier League season. The fixtures computer has thrown up some other mouth-watering clashes to whet fans’ appetites for the 2017/18 campaign. Manchester United host West Ham, Arsenal welcome Leicester and Man City travel to new-boys Brighton. Meanwhile, Tottenham visit Newcastle on their their top-flight comeback, and Liverpool face a trip to Watford on day one. Local team crowned basketball champs THE BENALMADENA boys basketball team has won the “Gold Phase” provincial basketball league. The team were crowned in an awards ceremony presided over by Joaquin Villazon, Councillor for Sports, and the president of the Benalmadena Basketball Club, Aurelio Cano, following the league’s semi-finals and finals at the Benalmadena Sports Centre last Saturday. The first semi-final saw Malaga Basketball team and CB. San Pedro battle it out in a dynamic and physical match with San Pedro winning 59-65 and making it through to the final. The other semi-final saw Benalmadena team play the City of Melilla with the former charging ahead even from the first quarter and ending up winning 61-39. The final between CB Benalmadena and CB San Pedro had an intense start with both teams scoring. Bit by bit Benalmadena opened up a gap lasting until the last quarter when the San Pedro team showed why it was playing the final, narrowing a 20-point gap in the last four minutes. The local team readjusted their formation and within minutes scored again, allowing the Benalmadena team to be declared champions by 78 to 66.

Hundred million dollar ‘circus’ Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather will meet UFC champion Conor McGregor in a fight that has been described as a "farce" and a "circus" but could earn both men as much as $100m (£78.4m). American Mayweather, 40, posted a video on Twitter confirming the bout will take place in Las Vegas on 26 August, with the message: "It's official." Irish UFC lightweight champion McGregor, 28, said: "The fight is on," whilst UFC president Dana White told ESPN: "The impossible deal is now done." The fight, at light-middleweight, may well turn out to be, the richest in boxing history. Mayweather, a former five-weight world champion and widely considered the best boxer of his generation, retired unbeaten in 2015 after 49 bouts. That followed a successful defence of his WBC and WBA welterweight titles, a victory that equalled Rocky Marciano's career record of 49-0. Mayweather retired for the first time in 2008 after 39 fights. McGregor, who has never boxed professionally, became the UFC's first dual-division champion in November 2016 and has previously challenged Mayweather to a fight under mixed martial arts rules. His boxing licence was granted by the

California State Athletic Commission in December, allowing him to box in the US state. White, who took part in negotiations on behalf of McGregor, said: "We have been in talks for a while. "They went smoothly. Floyd Mayweather surrounds himself with smart people and we got the deal done. "The reason Conor McGregor's as big as he is is he'll fight anybody, anywhere, any time. He will go after Floyd Mayweather and he will try to knock him out." White said the fight would take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and would be at 154lbs - light-middleweight, one category up from Mayweather's last bout in September 2015, when he gained a wide points win over compatriot Andre Berto. “It's definitely going to be the biggest fight ever in combat sports history and probably going to be the biggest pay day ever - all sides involved are pretty happy with their deals," he said. McGregor has won 21 and lost three of his 24 MMA contests, and White said his style would cause problems for Mayweather. "Floyd Mayweather is 40 years old, he's always had problems with southpaws," added White "Conor McGregor is 28 and he is a southpaw. Whenever Conor hits people, they fall. He is 100% positive that he wins this fight, and I stopped doubting him a long time ago." Speaking last month, boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya said the contest was "a farce" and "a circus" and feared the impact it would have on the sport. "Floyd's and Conor's motivation is clear.
