panies and infrastructure operators, considers the scheme to be among the most urgently-needed infrastructure projects in the country. An entire page is devoted to it in the groupâ€™s latest report based on studies conducted in collaboration with international consultant Deloitte, among others.

President of the Association, Julian NuĂąez, referred to the importance of the train for the development of the Costa del Sol at a Madrid conference attended by the Spanish Infrastructure Minister, IĂąigo de la Serna, and executives from the countryâ€™s leading construction firms. Second plane crash in a week

Three plane crashes have hit the Costa del Sol this year

by Sally Underwood THE COSTA del Sol has seen its second air crash in just one week after a plane belonging to a pilot school smashed through a fence at the end of a runway in Velez Malaga, almost ending up in a riverbed. The plane, which was carrying three people onboard, was travelling from Malaga to San Javier in Murcia

when it made a stop at El Trapiche airfield in Velez Malaga. For reasons as yet unknown the plane did not stop on the runway after landing, instead hurtling through a fence. Those on board were unharmed although the plane suffered damage. The crash is the second in the Costa del Sol in one week after three Germans were killed when their light aircraft came

down in the hills above Alcaucin while participating in an air rally. The plane was travelling to Granada when it veered off-course and came down over the mountains. Investigators are now trying to pin down the exact cause of the crash. Two others were also killed on January 19 this year after their plans crashed after take-off in Velez Malaga and exploded in an avocado farm.

Tourist thieves banned from costa Four thieves, aged between 21 and 28, have been banned from Puerto Banus after stealing €98,000 in luxury watches from tourists. The group, who are of British, French and Moroccan nationalities, used violence and intimidation to steal high-end watches from tourists in at least seven separate incidents. One member of the group would grab the victim’s arm while the others robbed him or kept look-out. The thieves, whose permanent base is in Barcelona, are said to travel to tourist spots such as Marbella and Ibiza during busy periods to carry out their crimes. They were finally arrested in April after several tourists complained to police. Officers raiding their rented property in Benalmadena found three designer watches, five mobile phones, as well as €5,275 euros and £485. A judge has now placed restraining orders on four of the group banning them from returning to Puerto de Banus. Ibiza is one of the thieves favourite places in the busy summer period

Marbella landmark renovation The Hotel Don Miguel, one of the first and most well-known hotels built during the Spanish tourist boom of the ‘70s is to be refurbished...and renamed. by Staff Reporter After being closed for over ten years, it’s planned to be open for business again in 2019 having been bought by Arab investors six years ago. The total cost for the renovation is expected to be in the region of €70m. The abandoned complex was taken over in 2013 by a company known as Magna Hotels & Resorts and has since done a deal with popular hotel operator Club Med to reopen the property. Club Med, known for specialising in the more high-end and all-inclusive family holiday market was the same group that operated the Don Miguel until it closed in the year 2000. This project – unveiled in the presence of the Mayor of Marbella José

Bernal - will mark the return of Club Med to Spain after beating 23 other operators in the bid organised by Magna Hotels to run the establishment. Work is due to start soon and once opened will bring around 300 new jobs to the area. The new name of the hotel will be announced in due course.

Paint job

PAINT works to Mijas’ Employment Office are nearing completion, following a €10,000 investment. The project, which involved sealing the building’s cracks before painting it, was considered a priority in improving the town’s image as it can be easily seen from the motorway. Works had an expected execution period of one month. The town’s Councillor for Operational Services, Jose Carlos Martin, confirmed, “we have checked on the progress of the works which are going ahead at a good pace. In a few days the building will be in the state we want it.” The project is just one of around 200 being carried out by Mijas’ Council to improve the town’s image. Mr Martin explained, "we have to offer a good image of our buildings. We wanted to carry out these works so that this much-used site is in the best condition.”

Good news for drivers ESTEPONA’S Council have built a new car park, with space for over 140 cars, on Avenida San Lorenzo in the town’s centre. The works, which included asphalting a 4,200 square metre plot of land, had a budget of €50,000. The car park will also feature an information sign installed by charity Aprona, which helps around 130 at-risk children in the town. The works are designed to complement a planned development in the town’s centre, which would include a hotel, shopping centre, and other facilities. The Council claim the project would create around 1000 jobs and increase tourism and the local economy. The Junta de Andalucia are currently in the process of signing off the development.

TORREMOLINOS’S Carrefour has expanded, now offering further parking spaces and hundreds more products. The supermarket, which is the largest in Torremolinos, has also modernised its facilities. The town’s Mayor, Jose Ortiz, and Deputy Mayor, Maribel Tocon, visited the site to see the improvements, meeting with the shop’s manager, Aurelio Martin.

by Sally Underwood FUENGIROLA’S Council has invested over two hundred thousand euros in remodelling Calle Blanca Paloma. The works, which are expected to be completed within three weeks, will see LED lights installed, pavements widened to at least 1.5 metres and orange trees planted out. The town’s Councillor for Infrastructure, Jose Sanchez, explained “the execution period is very short; only 21 days, so all being well we can have the work finished by the end of May.”

Police thwart suicide attempt POLICE have saved the life of a suicidal man who had tried to hang himself in his home in El Morche, Axarquia. The officers burst into the 43-year-old’s home after receiving a frantic call from his wife, who was in Cordoba and feared for her husband’s mental state. They entered the property seconds after the man stepped off a chair with a noose around his neck. An officer quickly caught the man, preventing him from suffocating. The man had apparently wanted to take his life following marriage problems. He had called his wife, who was away from her, saying he wanted to kill himself. She in turn called Torrox police, fearing she would be unable to reach her husband in time. The man is now being treated at the Comarcal Hospital in Axarquia. His wife has expressed her gratitude to the police for saving her husband.

Going green THE Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces has signed an agreement with the Andalusian Cluster of Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (CLANER) to implement a series of measures making the Costa del Sol’s councils greener. Proposed measures include using renewable energies, and increasing energy efficiency. The scheme will also see councils participate in national and international projects which provide funding and information on saving energy. CLANER president Alfonso Vargas, explained councils play “an essential role” in “the transformation and modernisation of society”, concluding, “we are very satisfied by this collaboration agreement.”

Father arrested on suspicion of murdering 11-year-old son The father of an 11-year-old boy found dead in the mountainous area of Oza-Cesuras, northern Spain has been arrested on suspicion of murder. by Tahnee Wright The father, who suffers psychiatric problems, was under a restraining order from the boy’s mother until 2013, having previously been charged with coercion and denounced for threatening behaviour. The mother went to the Police Station in La Coruna on Sunday to report him missing. His father had been taking care of him over the weekend and failed to return him to his mother at the agreed time.The National Police initiated a search for the boy and located the father in a hostel in Labanou 2km away.

The boy was found dead in a wooded area of Rodeiro de Oza on Monday night and his body was taken to the University Hospital Complex in La Coruna for an autopsy. Although analysis continues, sources indicate the boy received a blow to the head with a blunt object. Pablo Gonzalez Cacheiro – Mayor of La Coruna confirmed officers have inspected the marital home in search of evidence, ‘I know the family and I am here with them. It is hard to know what to say in these cases and even harder to believe that an 11year-old boy has lost his life.’ At a press conference, Rocio Fraga - Councillor for

Equality and Diversity of the City of La Coruna, described the death of the boy as a ‘clear case of domestic violence’ where a parent uses the child to attack their partner. The City Council of La Coruna suspended municipal events and declared two days of official mourning for the boy, who was a student of the San Francisco Javier school, where his mother works.

New life in Marbella for rescued girls JIMENA Rico and Shaza Ismail, a young couple who were imprisoned in Turkey after fleeing homophobic persecution in Dubai, are moving to Marbella to start a new life together after getting engaged. The girls, who are 28 and 22 respectively, had flown to Dubai to visit Shaza’s supposedly sick mother. They dramatically escaped, however, after discovering the girl’s Egyptian father wanted her to face trial for her sexuality, which is illegal in Dubai. The couple fled to Georgia, where the man intercepted them, tearing up their travel documents. Police intervened and took the girls to the Turkish border, where they crossed over. Turkish police soon caught up with them though, and imprisoned on suspicion of terrorism them without access to legal advice or phones. Ms Rico’s frantic family, who live in Torrox, contacted the authorities here losing telephone contact with her. Spanish diplomats managed to trace the girls to Turkey and liaised with the government there to secure their quick release. The girls, who say they are “shattered” by their experience, are now engaged and have both been offered positions at the Funky Buddha Beach, a club in Marbella. The girls are continuing to share details of their ordeal, which they say involved being “spat at” and questioned about their sex-life by police in Turkey. They say they now want to highlight persecution of homosexuality.

Pervert identified by his own photos A 57-YEAR-OLD step-father who allegedly sexually assaulted his partner’s underage daughter on the Costa del Sol, has been identified by photos showing the backs of his hands.The man had allegedly drugged the girl with powerful sedatives and sleeping tablets before abusing her. She had very little recollection of the crimes, however, because of the medication she had been given. The abuse only came to light after her mother found photographs of her daughter naked and asleep while cleaning the house. She called in the police who interviewed the girl’s step-father, who was in prison in Jaen for other crimes. They photographed his hands and criminologists were then able to confirm the hands shown in the photos were the man’s by their interphalangeal joints; the first time a crime has been solved in this way. As the man is already in prison, the prosecution has denounced him as a suspect and are not seeking jail time.

Other suggested priorities include improvements to rail infrastructure in Barcelona and Madrid’s notorious ring road. The coastal train route from Malaga ends in Fuengirola, but an extension to Marbella and Estepona has been discussed for years. Estimates suggest that up to 100 million people per year would take advantage of the service should it ever be completed, a ten-fold increase on the current average of 9.6 million. A lack of funding is blamed for the lack of progress, with a minimum €4.5 billion investment needed for the proposed 56-kilometre route, 90 per cent of which would have to be underground to keep it close to urban centres.

DJ Robert miles dies in Ibiza Robert Miles, trance producer and DJ, best known for his No 1 hit Children, has died at his home in Ibiza, Spain. by Andy Mansell As the news of Miles' death broke it was only stated that he had suffered from an "unknown illness". However a statement read out on the Balearic radio station, Open Lab, owned by Miles, said he had died from stage 4 metastatic cancer. "Robert was more than just an artist, he was a pioneer, a creator, an inspiration, a son, a father, our friend," a spokesperson said. "Robert passed away peacefully last night after a courageous battle with stage 4 metastatic cancer over the last 9 months. "Throughout it he was strong, determined, incredibly brave and did everything he could to fight this horrendous disease." Miles - real name Roberto Concina - released his debut, Dreamland, in June 1996, an album which went platinum in Europe. It featured the hypnotic trance track Children, which cost just £150 to produce, and went to No 1 in more than 12 countries. In the wake of this success, he retreated from the glare, releasing a string of albums that included 1997’s 23am, 2001’s Organik and Miles_Gurtu in 2004.

He was also known for launching Open Lab, a Balearic radio station which broadcast from Ibiza and covered arts, media and technology. Joe T Vannelli, a close friend of the producer, said: "The tragic news of the death of a very talented artist of our time makes me incredulous and upset. "I remember the 1997 Brit Awards ceremony very well. Robert Miles won the Best International Newcomer award, which was introduced by Gary Barlow. Miles was the only Italian artist to win in BA history. "I will miss the fights, brawls, criticism, judgements... but especially your talent in finding sounds and melodies unparalled."

Man burned alive in caravan

AN AUTOPSY on a man who died in his caravan in Toremolinos this week confirmed he had suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning. Officers from the National Police believe the man had been trying to clean his gas hob when a fire broke out, causing three explosions. Witnesses called the emergency services after the first explosion and tried to open the door to the man’s caravan, but were unable to reach him. After battling the flames, firefighters found the man’s burnt corpse in the vehicle, parked on Avenida Salvador Dali in La Colina. Health workers tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the man.

Beer full of vitamin ‘P’

Crocodiles sighted on Costa ONE INVENTIVE sand artist has created a convincinglooking crocodile pair on Marbella’s Paseo Maritimo. The installation, which shows an adult looking after its young, joins other animal statues in the town, including some supposedly by Salvador Dali, which were purchased by former mayor, Jesus Gil. The famous artist’s Rhinoceros Dressed in Lace sits at the entrance to Puerto Banus, while a life-size African Elephant graces the beach in San Pedro Alcantara, standing amongst palm trees.

by Sally Underwood Aimed at the more adventurous drinker, a brewery based in Denmark is using 50,000 litres of urine collected from one of the largest music festivals in Europe to produce a new product. But don’t worry...it’s not as it seems (or tastes!). With the amusing name of ‘Pisner’, the beer doesn’t actually contain any human waste at all but is instead produced from malting barley fields that have been fertilized

with human urine rather than the established practise of using animal manure or specially made factory plant nutrients. Henrik Vang, Chief Executive of brewer Norrebro Bryghus, said: “When the news that we had started brewing the Pisner came out, a lot of people thought we were filtering the urine to put it directly in the beer and we had a good laugh about that.” Using human waste as fertilizer on such a large scale is certainly a novelty, said Denmark’s Agriculture and

Food Council, which invented the idea for what could be the ultimate sustainable hipster beer and has already named the concept “beercycling” Anders Sjögren, who attended Roskilde Music Festival in 2015 and one of the first to sample the beer said: “If it had tasted even a bit like urine, I would put it down, but you don’t even notice!” The 50,000 litres collected from that festival resulted in enough malting barley to brew around 60,000 bottles of Pisner beer.

THE Costa del Sol Photographic Society had hosted its 2017 best photographer awards in Benalmadena. The ceremony, which was attended by Councillor for Foreigners, Ana Scherman, took place at Bil-Bil Castle, which is hosting an exhibition of the society’s phortgraphs until 26 May. The Benalmadena-based Costa del Sol photographic association was formed in 2002 and currently has around 100 members. Most are British but the society also has members who are Spanish and of other nationalities. First prize went to Eleonor Smith, second to Mary Rundle, and third to Rowan Fookes. The group meets every month in the Innova building and encourages anyone interested to get involved with the sole condition that members speak English; the language common to all participants.

Crematorium goes up in smoke by Sally Underwood SAN PEDRO’S crematorium may be forced to close after a Malaga judge annulled the licence used to erect the building. The judge ruled the document, which was granted in January 2015, had been handed out by a body not authorised to do so and was therefore void. He made the judgment following a complaint from a resident living on the same street as the crematorium. San Pedro’s Deputy Mayor, Rafael Piña, said the council was now appealing the decision, adding, “if the result is negative, San Pedro’s crematorium may be closed because of the previous government’s incompetence.” He said he was looking at alternative solutions, however, explaining, “if we have to move the location, we would be willing to do so.”

Half a million invested in road improvements FUENGIROLA’S Council has launched a tender to find a company to carry out €547,000 of works to Calle Santa Catalina. The works, which will be carried out over the summer so as not to inconvenience students at the road’s school, will include renewing underground cables and pipes, as well as re-asphalting its surface and replacing signage, lighting and street furniture. The town’s Mayor, Ana Mula, explained, "we hope that many companies will apply. 34 companies applied for our last tender because we are a council which pays its bills quickly, which inspires confidence.”

Viva España THE TEODORO reding cultural association is set to put on a commemorative walk around Malaga, celebrating the city’s resistance against Napoleon’s troops in 1810. The event will take in several of the most significant sites of the resistance, including the Ermita de Zamarrilla, and the districts of La Trinidad and El Perchel. The day will kick off at 11.30am from the gates of Iglesia del Carmen, ending at Plaza de San Pablo at 12.45pm, where there will be a re-enactment of the resistance. Locals from La Trinidad, as well as actors from theatre group “Arriba el Telon” and historical society “Tarifa 1812” will participate in the staging. The event is now in its fourth edition, having first taen place in 2010, 200 years after the resistance. 300 participants from France, Spain and Poland took part in the reenactment.

Drug trafficker nabbed by Sally Underwood

LOCAL POLICE in Fuengirola have detained a 29-year-old illegal street vendor from Senegal for selling drugs on the town’s promenade. The man was collared as he sold marihuana to a Norwegian national; both were arrested. The dealer was found to have 61.12 grams of marijuana in 21 bags on him and was charged with drug trafficking, while the Norwegian was charged with possession. Local Police Chief, Joaquin Rueda, explained, "this arrest is important in helping the Local Police show the relationship between the sale of counterfeit products and the narcotics trade. This fact was brought to the attention of the Local Safety Board some time ago and this is not the first time we have made such an arrest.”

Outrage at proposed bullfight AROUND 200 people have protested against a bullfight scheduled for June 10 in on the Costa del Sol. The protestors from pressure group, “Rodea el Ruedo”, marched through Velez Malaga’s streets, carrying a large banner saying, “No to bullfights. Torture is neither art nor culture.” They made their way to the Town Hall, where they challenged on the council to fulfil its commitment, made last year, to ban animal cruelty in the town. Mari Carmen Castillo, one of the movement’s spokesmen, said “it seems a joke that a bullfight is scheduled barely a year after this commitment”, adding she believed the fight was “illegal.” She finished, “our platform intends to stop this bullfight, ensuring the council comply with its law.” The proposed fight is set to feature matadors Manuel Diaz “El Cordobes” and Francisco Rivera “Paquirri”.

Church bomber arrested

A 44-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested by the National Police in Torre del Mar for allegedly hurling a Molotov cocktail at an icon of the Virgin Mary in the Virgen de los Desemparados Church in Velez Malaga. The man, who is thought to be mentally ill, threw the homemade explosive at around noon last Tuesday. The device failed to detonate, instead spilling fuel on the icon’s robes. Officers located the alleged assailant after sifting through CCTV images. The raided the man’s house and found two other similar devices before arresting him. The man has now been charged with property damage and religious hatred. The arresting officers confiscated four computers, two electronic tablets, a lsquopen -drive, a mobile phone and clothing which were apparently used in the attack. The man has now been sent for psychiatric evaluation. Priests, who are due to display the icon of the Virgin next on May 13, are now meeting to consider ways to prevent any similar incidents with CCTV and other security measures.

Len’s strictly replacment unveiled by Staff Reporter Shirley Ballas, the British-born ballroom and Latin dancer and international coach, has been confirmed as the new judge on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. Originally from Wallasey, Shirley is a former British Open To The World champion, European, German, United Kingdom, United States and International Latin American champion. She retired from competitive dancing in 1996 and is now an acclaimed and respected international coach to many of the top professional and amateur dancers as well as a highly renowned sought-after adjudicator for ballroom and Latin American competitions judging all around the world.Nicknamed the Queen of Latin, Shirley is one of the top and most decorated professional dancers in the world having previously been three-time British Open To The World Latin American champion, 10-time United States Latin American champion, and multiple-times British National champion. By the age of 21, Shirley had won nearly every major title she competed in worldwide. She remains the only person to have ever won the British Open To The World Latin American championships in Blackpool with two different partners and reached the finals an impressive 17 times. Outside the ballroom, Shirley is mother to Mark Ballas, the musician, Broadway star, professional dancer and two-time winner on Dancing With The

Stars in the US. Shirley will take over from Len Goodman as Head Judge and will have the casting vote in the dance-off after Len announced last year that he was stepping down at the end of the 14th series. Shirley Ballas says: “I am so excited and over the moon to have been given this wonderful opportunity. I can’t wait to get in to the ballroom and be part of the incredible and respected judging panel. Strictly is so loved by the British public, I have always been a massive fan. Beach rapist jailed

A 25-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed, pending trial, for allegedly raping a 37-yearold woman whom he had drugged on Nerja’s Burriana beach on the Costa del Sol. by Sally Underwood

Beach-goers called in police after noticing the man having sex with the woman on a sun lounger, seemingly against her will. Another 35-year-old man was said to be watching on and “waiting his turn”. Officers quickly arrived and called for medical help for the woman, who “seemed intoxicated”. They pursued the two men who tried to escape in their car, which broke down. The pair then fled on foot and were caught by officers in a matter of minutes. Interviewing the woman, police found she had travlled from Granada with the

two men, and cannot remember anything after getting into the car. This led officers to believe she could have been given daterape drug “burundanga”, also known as the “devil’s breath drug”. They are now carrying out tests to see whether she had been given the narcotic, which puts users into a “zombie-like” trance. The alleged rapist man, known only as J.A.A., was found to already have a criminal record and was remanded in custody. He now faces four to ten years in prison for penetrative sexual assault. The other man, known as J.L.M.S., was released on the condition he returns for questioning when required.

Backing the wrong horse THREE people have been injured after a car hit a tourist horse and carriage in Nerja. The vehicle’s driver supposedly collided with the oncoming horses outside the Enrique Lopez Cuenca stadium after being dazzled by the sun and not seeing them. The three people on board were thrown from the carriage but suffered only minor bruising. Both horses were injured however, with one having to be freed after becoming trapped under the cart and wounding its leg. One lane of the N-340 was closed while emergency workers attended the accident.

Legal eagles hampered by termites THE Bar Association of Torremolinos has demanded action after an infestation of termites has ruined archives in the town’s judicial building. The association’s dean has written to the High Court of Justice of Andalusia, General Council of the Judiciary, Provincial Court and Junta de Andalucia, calling on the court to be fumigated, after leaving files in an “unrecoverable condition.” Those working in the building have described the situation as “unbearable” after finding the insects between documents, and on the walls and floors. The building is also said to suffer from leaks and damp, causing lawyers to ask for investment for improvements.

MARBELLA’S City Council has installed a new lighting system illuminating the mosaics at the Roman villa of Rio Verde. Spain’s Tourism Minister, Gustavo Santos was in Malaga on Friday evening when he referred to the ‘Mate Cocktail,’ an idea of chef Diego Cabrera that was created especially for Argentine tourist events this year in Spain. Argentina is renowned all over the world for its meat and barbecues, but it was ‘showing that it is much more, it is not only meat,’ Santos said. Some of the ingredients used in the beverage include lemon, as Argentina is the world's largest producer of the citrus fruit; sugar cane, in a nod to the sugar mills of Tucuman; and yerba mate, a South American naturally caffeinated tea. ‘It is wonderful what is happening because in Argentina we have naturally agreed to exhibit our most important values: our food,’ he told EFE. He said Argentine cuisine was ‘little known in Europe, extraordinary and reflects diversity,’ adding that it would allow his country to develop local economies and boost employment. The Malaga Gastronomy Festival ran from April 10 to May 7, with Argentina as the special guest country.

Party time CARTAMA is counting down to its annual San Isidro the Labourer festival from 12 to 15 May. The event, which begins at noon on 12 May, kicks off with fireworks and a fair where there will be free sausage tasting. The afternoon’s entertainment will see adults enjoy an opera, while little ones can take part in a dance school. Saturday 13 May will see the town’s roads decked out in the annual street beautification contest, with an awards ceremony in the evening. Those attending Sunday’s events can take part in the pilgrimage of San Isidro, which will see 50 floats accompany an icon of the saint to the Guadalhorce river. After taking in the walk, festival-goers can dance the night away to live performances offering the best of music from the 80s and 90s.

Ramblers step out for charity by Sally Underwood An INTREPID gang of 19 walkers have taken on a 22km fundraising hike, raising €3,500 for four animal charities. The ramblers set off on the six-hour treck, organised by Al’s Ramblers in Coin, after meeting Rupert, a German Shepherd from SOS Animals who needs a specialist operation. Funds raised from the walk have been earmarked for his treatment. Walkers raised money through sponsorship, the sale of free range eggs, post-trek picnic refreshments, a raffle featuring a cake made by Rambler John Staton and an auction. The proceeds will be shared equally between S.O.S Animals, A.I.D Animals in Distress, ARCH Andalucian Rescue Charity for Horses and CHAIN Charity for Animals in Need. In addition to financing Rupert’s operation the fundraising also means that ARCH will be able to buy 6 months’ supply of hay for their horses, A.I.D. can re-pay more of the outstanding debt for their new kennels and CHAIN will be able to neuter more cats and dogs. Al’s Ramblers’ leader, Alan Nichols, said, “we had to postpone the walk by a week because rain stopped play so some people had to drop out but their sponsors very kindly continued to support the event. U3A summer activities Group TORREVIEJA based self-help group, University of the Third Age (U3A) is to continue its programme of events over the summer season, thanks to the group’s new president, Rob Edwards. Their first gathering will take place on 7 June, which will take in a walk around Benalmadena’s beautiful Parque de la Paloma. The park features a large lake and beautiful cacti gardens. The group are meeting at 11.30am at Pepe’s restaurant on the roundabout for refreshments before setting off. Rob said the event would be a great opportunity for members to sit in the sun and moot ideas for future excursions. The summer’s other activities will include table tennis, photography, walking, petanque, back gammon, and a Sunday coffee morning. Guests and visitors are welcome but should note events could change subject to numbers. The association, which currently has around 30 members, are always looking for new members. A GROUP of 30 foreign residents in Arroyo de la Miel have made a trip to see the May Crosses in the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Ana Scherman, the town’s Coucillor for Foreigners met with the group to show them the traditional Spanish festival which involves locals decorating crosses with flowers and sweets. Ms Scherman explained the excursion was designed to “show foreign residents our local customs and traditions to help them integrate into the community.”

Get lost

Life was uncluttered in the 60s and 70s. But, when they said technology would make life even easier, we sheeple believe them. Is that so? For twenty-years I kept appointments with businesses scattered around four British counties. Before leaving my home I used my dog-eared £4.95 A ~ Z atlas. The easy to understand book accurately got me from my home to any obscure address in towns many miles away. Popular today, the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based innovation used by drivers. Has GPS finally made Geographer’s A ~ Z Maps history? I recall the Daily Mail carrying out a survey in which a dozen invited participants tested the two systems. Six of the contestants used their A ~ Z conventional maps to reach their objective; the other six used the GPS tracking system. The A ~ Z map users reached their destinations more quickly. Be prepared for more surprises; the Geographer’s A ~ Z maps were introduced in the 1930s. Another revelation is that the originator of the flawless road map was Phyllis Pearsall MBE. Little did I realise that it was a woman who, for over 80 years, directed me and millions of other motorists safely and trouble free to whatever address we wanted. Another thing you may not know: Every map published by the Geographer’s A ~ Z map Company includes a non-existent ‘trap street’. This helps her team to tell at a glance if a bought copy is illegally copied. This ingenious innovation has since been hijacked by various publishers of reference works. Geographer’s A ~ Z Map Company is the largest independent map publishing company in the UK. The Sevenoaks-based company publishes over 300 atlases. Recently, hundreds of tourists seeking one of Norway’s most visited attractions were misdirected by Google maps to an obscure hamlet situated 30km from the attraction. Roy Jarle Johansen of the Norwegian Public Roads Administration says road signs (and maps) aren’t the answer because people trust Google more. Chatting with a haulier, whose business operates between the Costa del Sol and the UK, he told me he preferred the A ~ to Z maps to the GPS system. When in 2012 the Olympic Games were held in London the A ~ Z Company was chosen to provide the detailed maps for the Olympic Parks in Stratford and other Olympic locations. As Henry Ford said, “If it isn’t broke why fix it?” Case closed, the rest of you can get lost.

“One day,” I told my English literature teacher, “we’ll have enormous, wafer-thin 3D TVs, computers on our wrists, phones in our pockets, and …” here I paused for dramatic effect, “people will be having sex via their computers or with robots”. That was back in the 1960s, and the classroom of 15-year-olds – after a moment of stunned silence – burst out laughing.“Duke,” bellowed Mr Matcher, “where in God’s name do you get your preposterous and frankly filthy ideas? “I shot back: “By reading science fiction, sir. And, mark my words, I really do believe that this will all happen in my lifetime.” Am I happy that so much that was once pure fantasy is now a reality? By and large, yes. The Internet made it possible for me to take a lucrative editing contract with me when I moved from the UK to Spain, and today it allows me to promote humanism and gay rights by working with like-minded folk from around the world – people like Samuel, a Ugandan contact who alerted me a while back to the fact a British evangelist, Paul Shinners, had travelled to Uganda to support the introduction of the death penalty for homosexuality. After using my Freethinker website to expose Shinners, who runs Cornerstones, a bookshop/cafe in St Neots near Cambridge, the story went viral and dozens of protesters targeted his enterprise, which was forced to close for three days. Shinners flatly denied that he had gone to Africa to stoke up hatred. He threatened to sue me, but quickly backed down when I unearthed a video which showed him addressing a rally where he congratulated Uganda for drafting a vile “Kill the Gays” bill. The bill, by the way, was never passed, thanks to international condemnation, but Uganda remains an extremely hostile place for the LGBT community. Sadly, there

is a downside to the communications revolution. A week or so back, fellow contributor to RTN – Sammy Kruz, who works at one of my favourite gay bars, Sensations in the Old Town of Benidorm – posted this on Facebook: Customer: anywhere more lively to go? Me: well if you took ya nose out ya phone ... switched off Grindr and all the other apps, maybe you would notice that you are surrounded by nice, attractive, interesting people!!! Sammy nailed it. Look around any bar or restaurant and you’ll find folk either staring glassy-eyed at large TV screens or at mobile phone displays. What you’ll rarely encounter is stimulating talk because people are far too preoccupied with their phones. As recently as last week I gave up trying to

chat with a guy because he thought his Samsung made far better company than I did. And he was fast approaching 80! So much for conviviality. In 1977, science fiction writer J G Ballard wrote a story entitled “The Intensive Care Unit” set in a world in which people no longer have any form of physical contact. Instead, they are obliged by law to live alone in their homes. Only via video links are they permitted to interact with others. If we want to avoid ending up in the sort of de-socialised, dystopian future Ballard envisaged, we need to start using technology far less selfishly and begin re-engaging with our fellow humans in the way we did before the invention of texting and the like. It’s known as conversation, folks. Start practicing it before your tongues atrophy and die.

I find the whole business of Health and Safety here in Spain puzzling, to say the least. There can be no argument that if rules and regulations save people from injury or even worse as they go about their day to day business, then it is undoubtedly a good thing, particularly when I recall my days working in Bermuda.It was the early seventies and although the Bermuda Islands were modern and highly developed, they were lacking in basic health and safety practices compared to the UK. Particularly in the building trade. My first major contract was the roofing of a new conference centre that was perched on top of a seven storey wing of a large hotel. The new roof was pitched and the

only thing protecting me from instant raspberry jam on the patio far below, was a four by four inch triangular timber fillet that directed rainwater into down pipes, and into which I dug my heels. Oh boy, did I dig in those heels! There was no scaffolding whatsoever, with access to the roof provided via an internal stairwell. My only ‘safety’ feature was a harness connected to a rope which in turn was held by my Rastafarian colleague Albert, sitting up top sporting a colourful tea cosy hat and singing Rastafarian songs But I survived. But getting back to my opening statement. What I find puzzling in Spain is the failure at times to rectify even the most blatant breaches of health and safety rules. Broken drain covers left unattended for months on end; doors to electrical

inspection panels damaged or completely missing and left that way permanently; protruding paving slabs on pedestrian areas; ridges of hard concrete from uncleared spillage in roadways, the list is endless and nobody seems to be held accountable. And worse, nobody in authority seems to care. And yet unnecessary cycle lanes are plonked in busy thoroughfares where there is clearly no heavy cycle traffic, and fines for such things as stowing your high visibility vest in the boot of the car instead of in the driver’s compartment. It would seem to be just another instance of an EU member, whilst praising to the rafters the benefits and advantages of membership of this authoritarian club, choosing to blatantly ignore any of its laws and directives that they find inconvenient or cannot be bothered to implement.

Korcula, Croatia – Croatia is increasingly popular as an international holiday destination, with many people drawn to its UNESCO listed towns and unspoilt beaches. If you plan to dive in Croatia head to the island of Korcula, home to a well reviewed dive school. You’ll love the corals and plentiful fish (think wrasses, sea urchins and scorpion fish), along with a 2000 year old shipwreck. Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands – If you fancy a spot of cold water diving and you love shipwrecks the Scottish Orkney Islands are second to none. Madeira – While Madeira may be an autonomous region of Portugal, its geographic location closer to Africa makes this a brilliant place for tropical diving. Often referred to as a ‘floating garden,’ this verdant jewel rises from the Atlantic like a rocky crag and is

Inheritance income boom

The ‘inheritance economy’ is set to boom over the next 10 years, as rising wealth and higher mortality rates combine to raise the total value of inheritances to £1 trillion over the next decade, but Independent Financial Advisors (IFAs) who are unprepared for this shift in generational wealth could miss out.

According to a ground-breaking report from estate administration specialists Kings Court Trust, the total annual amounts passing from one generation to the next are forecast to rise from the current level of £69 billion to around £115 billion by 2027. This 66% increase in inter-generational wealth transfers outlined in the ‘Passing on the Pounds’ report – developed in association with the CEBR – is expected to be heavily driven by the rise in property prices over the next 10 years. Already in the last 20 years, the average house price has risen by 273% and this has increased as the percentage of the average value of household net worth from 39% to 51% in 2015, which are the latest available figures. Christopher Jones, sales and marketing director of Kings Court Trust, said: “The revelation that inheritances will hit £1 trillion in the next decade is quite astonishing, but makes perfect sense given the amount of accumulated wealth being held by the UK’s older generation. However, IFAs who are not ready to make the most of this opportunity by finding ways to engage with the families of clients, rather than their clients alone, could see this opportunity slip

through their fingers. “Between 2012 and 2014 just over 1m people received an inheritance of more than £1,000 in a given year with around 870,000 receiving cash gifts of more than £500. But over the same period, the average inheritance rose from £43,000 to £54,000, so significant amounts of money are already passing into the hands of the younger generation. “As mortality rates increase and the concentration of wealth in the hands of the older generations rises, the number of adults receiving higher amounts as an inheritance is also set to rise. By 2047, we could see as much as £335 billion a year passing to the younger generation, which is a staggering amount of money.” This presents a problem for those passing on their wealth, and for those receiving it. Planning ahead to pass as much of this wealth on as possible without paying more inheritance tax than necessary is one thing, but the administrative burden can be equally difficult for those left behind, and IFAs play a vital role in helping families deal with this. Yet if IFAs fail to build relationships with the children of their clients, they could find the wealth, which they have helped to build over the years, simply moving to be managed by another adviser. Mr Jones added: “Many advisers struggle to find the best way to address the question of passing on wealth, especially if they have never had a reason to talk to their client’s children before. But simply asking clients the question ‘are you an executor in anyone’s will?’ allows advisers to begin

this conversation with clients without the need to discuss their own death.” Anyone who has been an executor will be aware of the difficulties it poses, as dealing with the death of a loved one is hard enough without the administrative burden that comes with it. For advisers, this is a key time when they can help the family with the right help and support. Mr Jones said: “When families should be grieving, they often have to address problems such as finding accounts of the deceased that they did not know about, dealing with constant queries from banks, disconnecting utilities and even rehoming a much-loved pet. This is where using a specialist estate administration service can help families dealing with a death, as all of these issues will be taken care of, leaving the family to grieve at such a difficult time.” Kings Court Trust provides a service for IFAs which allows them to retain clients in-house and also deal with the estate administration for the family when the time comes, rather than passing them onto a third party where it is much harder to determine what level of service they receive. How to get a mortgage in Spain The lending landscape changed irrevocably after the downturn, but how easy is it to get a mortgage in Spain and how much does it cost? How do you get one?

This year the Spanish property market is bouncing back in a big way after a few tough years in in many popular areas of the Costas. We don’t need to spell out the reasons why Spain has so many things to offer, but with the pound so still so strong and excellent property deals it’s a great time to buy a home there. Whilst many of you may be thinking of paying in cash, others may be keen to learn that the opportunities to borrow money in Spain have increased in the past couple of years so do research this option too. Mortgage lenders in Spain Taking out a mortgage from an experienced Spanish lender comes with a lot of added benefits. Firstly it should be mentioned that Spanish lenders are authorized by the Bank of Spain (Banco de España) and subject to its supervision. From the offset you will be working with an institution that knows the country and how things work. Their staff – some of whom will be trained to deal with buyers from overseas - will guide you through the home-purchase process in your own language. Their property survey will give you some added reassurance about what you are buying. Their due diligence on the property will ensure it is legal and unencumbered. Their lawyers will accompany you to the notary to guarantee

there are no gremlins in the paperwork and that everything is signed correctly – and that the ownership of your new property is registered correctly Having said that, of course taking on a mortgage is a big decision. Four steps to make your front garden greener this spring Greener front gardens don't need to be complicated or time consuming but a few easy updates can make a world of difference. If you want to know how to create a welcoming mood enhancer and an outdoor space that will benefit your own wellbeing, as well as wildlife and the environment follow these tips:

a waft of delicious fragrance as you pass. For a shadier boundary, a climbing hydrangea may be more suitable. Or plant low maintenance shrubs such as Hebes or Choisya to provide permanence and structure, then you can have fun interplanting with bulbs, cottage garden plants and bedding for a splash of colour as coordinated or crazy as you like.

Space: If you want to park your car think about the surface you require. Does it need to be tarmac or concrete? Sometimes block paving, gravel or a mesh through which the grass can grow is a more attractive solution and allows water to permeate rather than run off, thereby helping drainage in the area and refilling the ground water instead of the highway drains.

Scale: Choosing your plants is the best bit but do look out for height and spread. A monkey puzzle tree is for an arboretum not a front garden (unless you have a stately home), but a small flowering prunus or a compact maple could be just the thing.

Boundaries: Do you need that fence, or could you plant a hedge? A hedge is a home for wildlife and is much more tactile and attractive. But if you need a fence then why not plant some climbers. Clematis, roses and honeysuckle will give you abundant flowers and, in many cases,

Banana trees: 10 tips Known for its delicious fruit, the banana tree also makes the perfect houseplant Originating from East Asia, the banana is one of the oldest cultivated crops and there are more than 400 species worldwide of this exotic plant - characterised by large, smooth-edged leaves and a slightly wavy edge - from the Musaceae family. If you want a banana tree (or two) in your home, follow these tips: 1. When buying a banana tree, look at the pot size, the height of the plant and the number of plants per pot. Its leaves are fragile so must be sleeved in order to prevent leaf damage and cold damage. 2. Also look out for diseases and pests: you'll find aphids and scale insects are the most common. Meanwhile, sticky clear honeydew is a sign that there are 'beasties' living on the plant. And if conditions are too dry, the plant could have red spider mite, too. 3. Banana trees like warm conditions - they cannot cope well with temperatures below 12-15Â°C. And give them plenty of daylight but avoid placing in direct sunlight. 4. Because it has a large leaf area, the plant evaporates quite a lot of moisture and will therefore need some extra water. 5. However, be careful when watering not to get the soil too wet because this can cause the root to rot, which ultimately disrupts the plant's growth. 6. The banana tree has a limited range but Musa 'Dwarf Cavendish' and Musa 'Tropicana' are the most common varieties. The size of dwarf banana trees makes them suitable for living rooms. 7. Houseplant food once a fortnight will keep the banana tree strong and beautiful. 8. If it's thriving and getting too big, remove some of the lower stems so that it produces fresh side shoots.

In addition, you can plant around your feature plants with seasonal bedding, or add further containers or a hanging basket or two, to ring the changes and alter your look according to your mood or time of year.

Decluttering your house can destress your life Being in a crowded and cluttered environment can overload your senses making it difficult to relax. But how can decluttering reduce stress?'It's not easy to relax at the end of the day in a cluttered home because signals are being sent to the brain that there are a million things to do,' the Association of Professional Declutters & Organisers (APDO) tell us. 'Also clutter distracts and steals the focus away from what is most important.'There is evidence to suggest being surrounded by clutter and disorder negatively affects the brain and causes stress. It also causes "scattered thoughts" and an inability to focus and concentrate.'With this in mind, APDO give their top tips on how to reduce stress through decluttering:

Natural light tops the ‘must have’ poll for family homes The poll of 25–44 year olds also showed that a large garden is thought of as crucial for creating a good family environment. The research from Origin asked 500 people what they see as fundamental features for comfortable family living. Of those asked, more than a quarter (26.4 per cent) placed natural light as their top consideration, with just less than one in five (19.8 per cent) citing a large safe garden.Neil Ginger, CEO and founder of Origin, said: ‘Light in the home creates a feeling of space and freedom. These aspects are important when bringing up young children. As more and more people choose to renovate their homes rather than move, the decision to create areas where more light can enter the home is becoming ever more popular.’ Age played a significant part in how the votes were cast, with 29 per cent of the older respondents (35–44) placing natural light at the top, compared with 23.9 per cent of those aged 25 to 34. The younger audience seemed split on what they found most important, with 22.4 per cent claiming garden size was the crucial factor. The 35-to-44 group showed a clearer split, with just 17 per cent voting for a garden as their number one consideration.The full results are as follows: 1. Natural light within the rooms (26.4 per cent) 2. A large safe garden (19.8 per cent) 3. Open plan kitchen/diner (16.2 per cent) 4. Downstairs toilet (15.8 per cent) 5. Planting with purple PURPLE is actually the second most common flower colour, only trailing behind yellow, but we often fail to get the most out of it. It is an incredibly versatile colour, which can either be vibrant or subdued, so it really depends on what kind of statement you’re trying to make with your particular flower garden. If you’re going for a pale purple, lilac and lavender can be a lovely choice. The contrasting colour for violet and purple is yellow. The paler shades offered up by lilac and mauve look very nice next to creamy yellows, such as common primroses. When purples are placed alongside whites, silvers and greys, they look darker and more vibrant than they really are, and both colour groups pop. For something more dramatic, try morning glories or some purple gladiolus.

ASPARAGUS is one of the few perennial vegetables out there, so once you get a good batch going, you’ll have harvests for year to come, and you’ll barely even have to do anything. The first year that you plant it, allow asparagus to grow completely and don’t even bother to harvest it. Just enjoy looking at those green beauties knowing they’ll be all yours for the taking the next time around. In the second year, harvest the asparagus when the spears are about ½ an inch in diameter, but only do this for two weeks. Cut or break off the spears at about the 7- to 9-inch mark with the tips tightly closed. In subsequent years, harvest the asparagus for somewhere between five and eight weeks, then wait for the shoots to become ferny so that the roots are sturdier and stronger when the following year’s crop comes in. A COMPLEX craft requiring a great deal of dedication and skilful artistry, Bonsai reflect the essence of gardening by capturing the vast and wild within the small and tamed. Literally translating as ‘planted in a container´, Bonsai has historically held fascination among a western audience, having been exported from the Orient at the turn of the last century. The horticultural practice has been around for a thousand years and involves growing a miniaturised version of a plant in the form of a tree. Plenty of species can be grow this way with the right conditions and skilled grower. Pruning, clipping, wiring and pinching all enable the artist to cultivate the strength, health and aesthetics of the plant. Bonsai sales have increased across Europe as more and more people hope to challenge themselves, but the number of true enthusiasts has remained fairly steady. This is because the typical variety sold in garden stores are ill-equipped to last very long. Bonsai are typically grown indoors but are also highly suited to their own temperate climate, which means growing Chinese or Japanese exported plants in Spain is likely to lead to disappointment. By selecting a suitable Spanish plant with a strong trunk and following the right instructions, you can grow your own bonsai outside and open up a whole new chapter in your gardening experience.

Kunal On preaches the flamenco gospel

ONE of the more unusual artists to appear at the recent Fuengirola Fiera de los Pueblos was the world’s first male Indian flamenco artist. 37-year-old Kunal Om was born in Rajasthan, said to be the spiritual home of the Spanish Gypsys and from an early age was brought up on Indian dance and music with a particular interest in the glitz and glitter of Bollywood musicals. Having been a professional performer all of his life, appearing in numerous Indian musicals as well as appearances with such diverse talents as Ricky Martin and Boney M, he has always looked to expand his dance knowledge. “I decided I wanted to learn tap dancing but stumbled across flamenco instead” he told RTN in an exclusive interview.“It wasn’t easy to find out a great deal about flamenco in India but I met up with Italian Roberto Nieddu who ran an annual flamenco and gypsy festival in Jodhpur on

behalf of the Maharajah.”“Thanks to him I started my journey of musical discovery which has brought me to Spain.” One thing that Kunal unexpectedly found was that although there are clear similarities between Indian dance and flamenco there are also some major differences particularly with time signatures which made it hard for him to dance as well as he wanted. Luckily, as was growing up, he had studied the complicated patterns of tabla drumming which requires the chanting of up to 100 different ‘talas’ (rhythm patterns) and he managed to adapt this skill to help him to understand the complicated flamenco dance patterns.Kunal researched this style of dance for two years and then in 2014 decided that he had to travel to Spain in order to study ‘on site’ and shares his time between Granada and Sevilla, attending classes during the week and performing mainly traditional Indian dance at Indian Festivals across Spain and Europe.

He also spends a great deal of time meeting local dancers, picking their brains and admiring their choreography. Now he is becoming more proficient and comfortable in his flamenco, he is also involved in presenting a fusion of the two folk cultures and recently appeared as a singer and dancer with Granada born dancer Cristina Aguilera at the Palacio de Congreso in her home city. Kunal sees himself as a “flamenco preacher” and managed to incorporate some of that skill in his performances at the Fair in Fuengirola where he has now performed for three years running. “I love the Fiera de los Pueblos at it is a beautiful platform not only to present my favourite dance but to see and mix with people from 30 plus countries as well as the thousands of visitors who love to be entertained in the national casetas and enjoy the different food.” To find out more about Kunal Om visit www.indianflamencoartist.com.

Rockabilly meeting Star Wars SIX BANDS from Spain, Finland, Poland and Italy are due to play at the second European Rock’n Roll Meeting in Torremolinos on 12 and 13 May. The event, which will take place at the town’s Rowing Ground in Carihuela, begins at noon and ends at 8pm, with free entrance. Friday’s festivities will see Polish five-piece, Monkeys & The Baboons, kick off proceedings, after which Malaga band, Ric & The Dukes will play. Finnish quartet, Shoebox Revue will play at around 2pm, after which The Toreadors and Bert Blackmont & The Bucks will perform. Saturday will see the same bands play, but in a different order, delighting fans with early rock and roll music, as well as jazz and the blues.

Blossoming Friendship

THE MALAGA Philharmonic Orchestra is performing a Star Wars concert honouring the film’s music on 20 May at Fuengirola’s Palacio de la Paz. Rodrigo Romero, the town’s Councillor for Culture, explained the concert, “has already been a great success in Malaga, as I imagine it will be in Fuengirola.” He added, "this is perhaps the best-known score in the history of cinema”, explaining the composer, John Williams, was, “the undisputed number one in terms of music composition for films throughout history.” Tickets for the concert, which kicks off at 8pm, cost €10.

THIS month, the Estepona Floral Art Club are set to welcome back local event and wedding flower designer, Maxine. Maxine trained and had a Floral design business in London before moving to Spain. Her demonstration, "You've got to have Friends" promises to be a spectacular afternoon, demonstrating how to create arrangements to give to friends. The event, which takes place on Tuesday 16 May at 3 pm at Agro Jardin, Cencelada, costs 10€. All are welcome and no prior knowledge is necessary. This is the Club’s last demonstration before the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 13 June. Ian Grant sings out of passion not for money IAN GRANT grew up in Country Durham and by the age of 17 was singing in working men’s clubs around the north of England. He loved singing and went through a time when he was working cruise ships and holiday camps before moving to London to become a session singer but because the work wasn’t regular enough and London was expensive, he also took a job in corporate marketing whilst still singing. In 2005, he replied to an advertisement in a music paper from a rock band that needed a singer and when he arrived with short hair and wearing a suit, the band thought that he had perhaps gone to the wrong place as he should have been applying for an accountant’s job. As he was there, he was asked to sing an audition piece which was Mistreated, written by Ritchie Blackmore and recorded on the Deep Purple album Burn. Deeper Purple After that one song he was immediately offered the job in Deeper Purple a true tribute band which plays the music of Deep Purple but not note for note as if things are gelling well, they simply jam together and the audience will believe that it is the real band playing. The only proviso to the job offer was that Ian had to either grow his hair or get a wig and as the band was never going to be a bunch of look a likes, he chose the former option. The whole concept appealed to Ian as he had always been a great admirer of Purple and it wasn’t as if they would be playing in local pubs but would only perform before decent crowds perhaps every three of four weeks. They concentrated on playing music performed by Deep Purple Marks II and III which were responsible for most of the bands most popular numbers and made sure that they became adept at what they did.

Move to Spain In 2007, Ian and his partner moved to Estepona but he continued to travel back when necessary to perform in the band and he still curses the fact than when Deep Purple performed at the bullring in Estepona in 2008, he was in the UK performing with Deeper Purple. Unfortunately he had a serious car accident in 2009 and he had to stop playing with the band whilst he was recovering and they naturally had to replace him with a younger Italian version, Luka Revase. Then about four years ago, guitarist Rob Sas decided to move to Marbella so now there were two members of Deeper Purple on the Costa del Sol which effectively brought the UK version of the band to an end. Band reforms You can’t however keep a good band down and when Rob was getting married two years ago he invited all of the members of the band over for the wedding. It was little surprise that they all played together and because it sounded so good, they decided that they should reform but this time with two singers, Ian and Luka sharing the vocals. So pleased have they been with the quality of the reformed band which has played a number of gigs, including one for Harley Davidson in Jerez that Ian decided that the time had come to emulate their heroes and actually promote a concert in Estepona himself. Pink Purple Zep Fest With the support and blessing of the

Ayuntamiento, which is currently managing the bullring, the Pink Purple Zep Fest will take place at the Plaza de Toros on Saturday August 26 starting at 7.30pm. There are three genuine tribute bands, Think Floyd, Whole Lotta Led and Deeper Purple who will between them play some of the most iconic rock music ever known for around four hours and in order to ensure that local residents aren’t disturbed by very loud music, it is probable that Think Floyd will play the night out. Entrance costs €25 whilst a limited number of VIP tickets costing €70 will also be available for this. VIP ticket holders will be seated in a special area, will receive a welcome drink from the VIP bar as well as a special goody bag which currently includes a Tee Shirt, VIP Lanyard, souvenir programme and a fan as it will be hot plus exclusive access to the after gig party being held at the Louie Louie club just around the corner. Jason, just the intention to take on meditation is a positive step, and it does take time to be able to clear the mind and prepare to take your freedom in meditation journey. Finding the right time of the day and the right place can make such a difference to your outcome. Never try to meditate if you are tired, and do not have a calendar that says you have to meditate when you may not want to. I imagine post it notes and if anything comes up to block my channels of peace I write what they are on my notes and stick them on a wall to be dealt with by my conscious mind at a more appropriate time!

Colour expressions

We are still on the subject of colours. We have covered the basic colour words which should be enough to satisfy those of us who are not interior designers or paint shop assistants. However, you don’t have to think for long to realize that colours are also the subject of a lot of expressions. In English we say things like “out of the blue” and “in the red” – occasionally we are in the red out of the blue, which is a bit upsetting. Colour words are also used in these figurative ways in Spanish, and although some of the obvious ones are the same, there are others that are, surprise surprise, completely different. Let’s try some more obvious ones first – “lo veo todo negro” (I see everything as black, that is, I have a pessimistic view of life). “Se puso rojo como un tomate” (She or he went as red as a tomato). The word for white – blanco - can also be translated as “blank” which accounts for a sentence like this: “Cuando la profesora me hace

una pregunta, me quedo en blanco” (When the teacher asks me a question I go blank). This also happens when Spanish people speak to you in Spanish, unfortunately. Another use of “blanco” is “He pasado la noche en blanco” which means “I haven’t slept a wink all night”. Another way of saying that is: “No he pegado ojo en toda la noche” (loosely translated as “My eyes haven’t closed all night”). Pink is a colour that is associated with glamour and celebrity as it is served up for us via gossip magazines. If you’d like to find out where the most popular bullfighters go on holiday with their model girlfriends, or what the interior of some film stars house looks like (as you can tell, I’m very interested) then you need to turn to the “prensa rosa” (the pink press). Actually, and seriously, they do make very good reading for students of Spanish as they are full of everyday words and expressions and have lots of pictures to help with the meaning!

The Book of Joan by Lidia Yuknavitch

Post-apocalyptic fiction too often pays lip service to serious problems like climate change while allowing the reader to walk away unscathed, cocooned in an ironic escapism and convinced that the impending disaster is remote. Not so with Lidia Yuknavitch’s brilliant and incendiary new novel, which speaks to the reader in raw, boldly honest terms. “The Book of Joan” has the same unflinching quality as earlier works by Josephine Saxton, Doris Lessing, Frank Herbert, Ursula K. Le Guin and J. G. Ballard. Yet it’s also radically new, full of maniacal invention and page-turning momentum. The novel opens in 2049, and then looks back at a past that is our future. Earth has been devastated by global warming, a crisis exacerbated by incessant warfare over scarce resources. Orbiting the planet is CIEL, a “man-made, free-floating” colony consisting of “redesigned remnants from old space stations” and ruled by the “rage-mouthed Empire Leader” Jean de Men. (Appropriately, his name evokes men and demons alike.) Among other dubious accomplishments, de Men claims the defeat, after a battle at the Alberta Tar Sands, of the “heretic” child-rebel Joan. As it unfolds, Joan’s story — including her early life and her discovery of “otherworldly combat techniques” like the temporary raising of the dead — is absorbing. Key to Joan’s spiritual perspective is science, with its specialized vocabulary: “Xenotransplantation. … Sometimes Joan would spin around alone in a circle saying the beautiful word out loud to no one but her body, hands clasped over her heart, eyes closed, like praying.” Yet we read such passages in the certain knowledge that it will be Joan’s fate to live on a dying planet. From her early experimental novels to her 2011 memoir, “The Chronology of Water,” and her previous novel, “The Small Backs of Children,” published in 2015 and partly set in war-torn Eastern Europe, Yuknavitch has exhibited a rare gift for writing that concedes little in its quest to be authentic, meaningful and relevant. By adding speculative elements to “The Book of Joan,” she reaches new heights with even higher stakes: the death or life of our planet. The colour green is used in various expressions. If someone says something horrible about someone else we say that they “turn them green” (poner verde). We would say, for example: “Cuando me equivoco, mi profesora me pone verde” (When I make a mistake my teacher has a real go at me). However, the expression is more often associated with talking behind people’s backs: “Como Juan no estuvo ese día, sus amigos le pusieron verde” (As Juan wasn’t there that day, his friends ripped him to shreds). Loneliness on the Costas Just over two years a group of seven likeminded people identified a growing need for a community based project with a mission to provide help, advice, support and friendship to the ever increasing number of over 50’s living on the Costa del Sol. Art exhibit raises funds for abandoned dogs

AROUND 100 ADANA volunteers enjoyed a day in the sun at an art exhibit at Duquesa Castle, raising over €1800 to help feed and care for abandoned dogs. The successful event saw local artists exhibit and sell their works, with a proportion of proceeds going to support ADANA’s shelter in Estepona’s Parque de los Pedregales. ADANA board members, Reg Winkworth and Susie Brown got the party going with canapes, cava and other refreshments for those perusing the exhibition. The charity’s next event, their annual dog show, will take place at Estepona’s Palacio de Congressos on Sunday 28 May. Reg invites all members of the public to attend the event, which wil riase funds and awareness for needy dogs.

With summer approaching it is time to start enjoying those delicious salads and this wonderful salsa can be used to spice up some chicken or enjoy with tortilla chips as a snack. 8 cups tomatoes, peeled, chopped and drained 2 1⁄2 cups onions, chopped 1 1⁄2 cups green peppers 1 cup jalapeno pepper, chopped 6 garlic cloves, minced 2 teaspoons cumin 2 teaspoons pepper 1⁄8 cup canning salt 1⁄3 cup sugar 1⁄3 cup vinegar 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce 1 (12 ounce) can tomato paste Mix all together and bring to a slow boil for 10 minutes. Seal in jars and cook in hot water bath for 10 minutes. This is a medium heat salsa. This is also a chunky salsa so if you want a smoother salsa cut your veggies into smaller pieces or alternaviley use a blender for required consistency.

Fiona Catchpowle a modern Costa Woman on Facebook THE Costa Women group founded by Ali Meehan of whom we wrote last week has encouraged a number of local women to set up businesses. By John Smith One such person is 49-year-old (she insisted that we mention her age as she is a young grandmother) Fiona Catchpowle, a Facebook marketing specialist who helps companies to obtain the very best from this important marketing tool. Although happy in the UK, Fiona decided to purchase an ‘off plan’ property in Spain as a possible holiday home and investment as at that time, property prices seemed to be booming. In the end, the family which included two young daughters decided that the time was right to take advantage of their sense of adventure and arrived in the Costa del Sol in 2005 to see how they would get on. The children understood that this was an adventure which could finish after a couple of years but in fact became a love affair with Elviria where she now lives and works. It was thanks to Ali Meehan that Fiona was encouraged to develop her business, sharing her knowledge with other members of the club and then developing a consultancy which started in Spain and has expanded across Europe. Fiona is not a ‘nine to five’ type of person and she is delighted with the variety of people that she works with, either helping with general marketing workshops or mentoring on a one to one basis to ensure that her clients run Facebook not the other way around. She can’t be described as a ‘lady who lunches’ as Fiona believes that there is more to life than eating and drinking but even as a ‘lady who works’ she does admit that the choice of things to do in the Marbella area is enormous. Now with one daughter aged 18 and the other 23 plus a five-year-old granddaughter, she believes that they have enjoyed the whole experience of living in Spain and she continues to thrive in her current role. When not working for herself Fiona tries to assist with Costa Women and was closely involved as ‘Master of Ceremony’ at the recent International Women’s Day event organised with Costa Women at the Andalucia Lab in Marbella. This is a lady who enjoys both work and networking and is committed to being involved with the Costa Women world. Getting real with the Gynae Are you among the women who skip their check-ups because going to the gynaecologist is an unpleasant experience? The team at HC Marbella suggest that you let go of this myth because regular gynaecology check-ups are very important for one’s health and they can even be lifesaving. A timely check-up can prevent long gynaecologic illnesses such as cancer, as well the complications they imply. The good news is that regular check-ups do precisely that: they detect possible changes in the reproductive system and prevent potential diseases from developing. Therefore, you are better off facing your fear, since a gynaecologist is, in the end, just another specialised doctor. How often should check-ups take place? There is no fixed answer, as it depends of each woman: her age, her risk factors, and her family medical history. The team at HC Marbella will suggest what is most appropriate for your specific case, but to be safe and avoid risks, the ideal would be to visit a gynaecologist once every year. What does a gynaecology exam consist of? The first step is to get to know you. During the appointment, you will be asked a series of questions to check your personal and family medical history. Afterwards, you will proceed to the physical examination and additional tests which include: Physical examination of the breasts, vulva, vagina, and uterine cervix Cervical screening to detect premalignant changes in the cells of the cervix, which can eventually lead to cancer. Transvaginal pelvic ultrasound scan to examine the internal genital organs: the uterus and the ovaries. Afterwards, the gynaecologists will explain what they found and explain the next steps, which can be. A new appointment to pick up the results. Further diagnostic tests, depending on the discoveries made during the physical examination and the ultrasound, such as: – Mammogram/breast ultrasound: If you do not have a history of breast cancer, you should start undergoing mammograms between the ages of 40 and 45. If on the other hand, you have a family history of breast cancer, you should start them at the age of 35. – Bone densitometry: Women in post menopause should also undergo bone density scanning, especially in the first two years without menstruation, to measure bone mineral density. For your convenience, you can take all the necessary tests the same day at HC Marbella and therefore avoid having to make any unnecessary trips. What you need to know: Regular check-up examinations don’t hurt, don’t take long, and can protect you from much worse situations. If you notice any change in menstruation or vaginal discharge, any irregularities in the genitals or a lump in the breast, go see your gynaecologist right away, without waiting for the next check-up. The best time for a gynaecological exam is in the days following the menstrual period. The exam cannot take place during menstruation since samples cannot be collected.

There are a number of things we can do to minimise our exposure to the pollen; • Wear large or wraparound sunglasses to stop dust and pollen coming into contact with your eyes. • Wash your hands more often than usual, try not to rub your eyes and when you come home from being outside, take a shower and change your clothes to make sure you’re not bringing pollen into the house. • Keep your windows closed in your car and house and don’t go for walks in the country during the times that you are most sensitive. • Visit your chemist and ask about antihistamines and eye drops which can reduce your symptoms What if I wear contact lenses? Contact lens users who suffer from allergies can find it hard to wear their lenses over this time. If your eyes are irritated, we advise giving your eyes a rest from lenses, or reducing the time you wear them each day. Daily disposable lenses are the best option if you do want to keep wearing your lenses, as they are new each day, so haven’t got any impurities on them. It could be just as quick as queuing in traffic, will be infinitely cheaper, you'll probably shed a few kilos, it will also be less stressful and according to a new study, actually be extremely beneficial for your health, helping to guard against heart disease and cancer amongst other illnesses.Cycling to work cuts the risk of developing heart disease and Cancer by almost half, research suggests. Walking to work is also good for you,

although it does not offer the same benefits as taking a bike, experts from the University of Glasgow found.The new study on 264,337 people, 52% of whom were women, found cycling to work is linked to a 45% lower risk of developing cancer and a 46% lower risk of cardiovascular disease, compared to driving to work or taking public transport. Overall, cyclists had a 41% lower risk of premature death from any cause.Walking to work was also associated with a 27% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease and a 36% lower risk of dying from it but there was no link with a lower risk of cancer or dying early from any cause in walkers, the study found. People who preferred to stroll to work also had to walk for two hours a week in total to see health benefits, at an average speed of three miles per hour. Experts behind the study, published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), said the lower benefits seen for walking compared to cycling could be down to several factors. These include the fact cyclists covered longer distances in their commutes than the walkers, cycling is a higher intensity exercise and cyclists were generally more fit.Dr Carlos CelisMorales, from the University of Glasgow, said: “Walking to work was associated with lower risk of heart disease, but unlike cycling was not associated with a significantly lower risk of cancer or overall death.“This may be because walkers commuted shorter distances than cyclists, typically six miles per week, compared with 30 miles per week, and walking is generally a lower intensity of exercise than cycling.”The study also found

some health benefits if people cycled part of their journey and took public transport or drove the rest of the way.The people taking part in the research were aged 52 on average at the start of the study and were followed for five years.Some 2,430 people died during the study period, with 496 deaths related to cardiovascular disease, which covers all diseases of the heart and circulation, and 1,126 deaths from cancer. Overall, 3,748 people developed cancer over the five years, and 1,110 had an event related to cardiovascular disease, such as a heart attack or stroke.Dr Jason Gill, from the institute of cardiovascular and medical sciences at Glasgow, said the Government needs to look at ways to make it easier for people to commute by bike, such as creating “cycle lanes, city bike hire, subsidised cycle purchase schemes and increasing provision for cycles on public transport”.These would create “major opportunities for public health improvement,” he added.Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Commuting to work by walking, or better still, cycling, is a great way to combine physical activity into your normal daily routine.“This study shows that people who cycle to work or walk for two hours a week have a significantly reduced risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.“It is paramount to make physical activity easier and more accessible if we are to reduce the burden of ill health caused by inactivity. Local authorities and workplaces should support this by making using active transport as a means to get to work an easy option.”

YouTube to rival Netflix? Spending millions on new original shows you can watch for free YouTube is planning a new slate of ad-supported original programming to start this year, the company announced at the NewFronts conference in New York last week. The shows - starting with ad-supported programming from Kevin Hart and Ellen DeGeneres will be free to view and not part of the company’s YouTube Red subscription service. They are part of a broader push from the Google-owned video site to establish itself as a place for premium programming alongside Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. In the process, YouTube hopes it will attract premium advertising as well, helping it shed a somewhat tarnished image after a parade of brands recently pulled advertising dollars out of Google as their ads appeared alongside hateful and terrorist content. During her opening remarks tonight, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki apologised to the hundreds of marketers in the audience. ‘We apologise for letting some of you down,’ she said. ‘Thank you for helping us become a stronger and better platform.’ Hart’s show, ‘Kevin Hart: What the Fit?’ will be a workout-focused program distributed through his own YouTube channel, Laugh Out Loud Network. DeGeneres, on the other hand, will use her show to give fans backstage looks at the making of her talkshow. Katy Perry and Demi Lovato also announced new behind-the-scenes shows with YouTube at NewFronts, while TV and radio personality Ryan Seacrest is confirmed to be producing a music competition, ‘Best.Cover.Ever’ to debut on the site later this year. Beyond traditional celebrities, YouTube is leaning on its existing online talent with two shows, one from internet comedy dup Rhett & Link and another from high-speed camera effects specialists The Slow Mo Guys.

According to Bloomberg, YouTube will invest hundreds of millions of dollars over the next year to produce more than 40 new original shows and further build out its YouTube Red service.

Control your children’s spending habits! Current is a new startup that wants to take allowances into the modern age through an appcontrolled Visa debit card, via TechCrunch. It’s a clever idea at its core: credit cards are more prevalent than ever these days, and this is a way for parents to help kids safely learn how to use them, which isn’t a bad thing. Current allows parents set up both recurring allowances for kids or one-time batches of money, and it gives plenty of control when it comes to things like shutting off the card and blocking groups of retailers (like bars or hotels) or specific stores. And both parents and kids will be able track their spending in the current app, which could help with teaching lessons like financial responsibility.

Apple Watch sales doubled

Sales of the Apple Watch have nearly doubled year over year, CEO Tim Cook announced on the company’s earnings call last week. So far, Apple has refused to give out exact sales numbers for the Apple Watch, as it does for its iPhone and iPad and has instead bundled the wearable device into its ‘other devices’ category with Beats products, AirPods, Apple TV and accessory sales. Cook also noted that revenue in the last year

from Apple’s wearables — the Apple Watch, Beats headphones, and AirPods — was the size of a Fortune 500 company. Given that the smallest Fortune 500 company pulled in $5.1 billion (€4.6 billion) in revenue last year, Apple has developed a very valuable wearable division. Apple owns 40 per cent of the Bluetooth headphone market and 11 per cent of the total headphone market.

Now that we have self-driving cars, the next big challenge is figuring out where to test them. Most experts agree that the best places to do that are giant, government-run, fenced-off fake cities that mimic all the real conditions of the road. To that end, South Korea’s government is building an 88-acre site that it claims will be the largest test bed for autonomous driving in the world. The news, which was first reported by Business Korea and later picked up by Mashable, highlights South Korea’s growing interest in positioning itself as a leader in self-driving cars. The site will be used by South Korean companies like SK Telecom, Naver, and Samsung, as well as automakers like Hyundai and Kia, according to Business Korea. This comes after Samsung, the No. 1 smartphone manufacturer in the world, recently received approval to test self-driving cars on public roads in the country. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transport of South Korea, the K-City is currently under construction based on the intelligent transportation system of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. The facility with an area of approximately 360,000 square meters is scheduled to be equipped with bus-only lanes, expressways, zones for autonomous parking and so on. A budget of approximately 11 billion won [€9.7 million] is planned to be invested in it.

BMW electric car plans confirmed BMW has announced it will keep production of its all-electric, zero-emission iNext flagship in Germany. The iNext, planned to be BMW’s first production car with Level 3 (‘eyes-off’) self-driving capability, will be built at BMW’s plant in Dingolfing, an hour north-east of Munich, starting in 2021. BMW released a statement confirming that Dingolfing was chosen because it and the neighbouring Landshut engine plant are its core competence centres for electric motors and highvoltage batteries. While Leipzig is BMW’s newest factory, hosting production of the i8 coupe

and both the range-extender and pure BEV versions of the i3, BMW have spent €137 million in the Dingolfing factory in recent years just to cope with the expertise and equipment needed to assemble high-voltage cars. The plant already builds the 5 Series and 7 Series and their plug-in hybrid variants. The Leipzig plant built 340,000 cars last year, accounting for almost 15 per cent of BMW’s total production and will play a key role in BMW’s plans to lift sales of its electrified cars to 100,000 cars this year, up from 62,000 BEVs and hybrids in 2016.

Volkswagen posts profit surge Volkswagen might have lost some sales in the first quarter of this year, but shareholders won’t be too concerned after it was announced last week that its operating profit has leapt 40 per cent. The German brand spent €23 billion on the clean-up from its ‘Dieselgate’ scandal. However, now it’s clearly back to making money, with an operating profit of €4.37 billion, up from €3.13 billion in the first quarter of 2016. Volkswagen said in a statement that it largely boosted its profit thanks to cost savings at its namesake brand, with the Volkswagen Group’s operating margin still on target to come in at between 6 and

7 per cent for the full year. While its 2016 operating margin was 6.7 per cent, largely on the back of huge margins from Porsche and Audi, its first quarter operating profit jumped up to 7.8 per cent while the Group’s revenues climbed to €56.2 billion, up by 10.3 per cent. ‘Our efforts to improve efficiency and productivity across all areas of the company are paying off,’ Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Mueller said. The Volkswagen brand saw its earnings climb €73 million to €869 million, while Bentley slowed its losses to only €30 million and Audi saw its profit slide from

€1.3 billion to €1.2 billion. On the plus side, Porsche remained strong (€832 million in profit) and both Skoda and Seat have been surging, with Seat’s profit jumping 56 per cent to €54 million after years of losses and Skoda’s profit climbing 32 per cent to €415 million. Volkswagen has ambitious plans for its core brand, aiming to climb through a 4 per cent operating margin by 2020 and 6 per cent by 2025. Porsche leads the Group in profitability, with an 18.5 per cent operating margin, followed by Skoda at 9.6 per cent, Audi at 8.7 per cent, Volkswagen with 4.6 per cent and Seat at 2.3 per cent.

7 hacks to keep your car cool this summer

1. Know the culprits. Often, extreme heat results in humidity, or dampness in the air, during summer. Car owners must realise that heat and humidity are culprits to many car dilemmas. For example, elevated temperatures may cause overheating while humidity can fog up windows thus affecting visibility. 2. Protect your engine. The engine is one of the most vulnerable parts of a car during summer. When overheating, the engine may stall or fail altogether. To prevent this, make sure that the engine and its mechanical parts are all in good condition. The water pump must be placed on ‘normal’ to cool down the engine and the drive belt must have the proper tension to function properly.

3. Clean the air conditioner. Cars are supposed to provide the driver and passengers comfort. However, many complain about the air conditioning system not delivering its job. To perform well, ACs must be cleaned regularly based on the Preventive Maintenance Schedule, or PMS, set by car manufacturers. It is also important to use only standard and recommended refrigerants. Don’t forget to check the AC filters so that ventilation inside the car cabin is not just cool but also clean. 4. Check those oils and fluids. Oils and fluids keep the car running properly. Having them checked or replaced is an important preventive measure during summer. Look under the hood and check the engine oil. If the colour is darker than usual, it is time for oil change. Also check on the brake, clutch, power steering, transmission and differential fluids. Top-up before going on long drives. 5. Don’t forget the battery. Many drivers believe that car batteries suffer more in wintry weather. This is a misconception. A car battery is more likely to break down in the summer because it is filled with fluids that evaporate from rising temperatures. Moreover, it may also overcharge or overheat. Prolong battery life by charging it at the correct rate and by cleaning the dirt and grease that build up on top. 6. Inflate your tires. Do take note of the tires, which react to the feverish temperatures absorbed by asphalt roads. Inflate them correctly to have a smooth ride. Always refer to the owner’s manual for the recommended tire pressure. 7. Remember: prevention is better than an ounce of cure. This universal truth is also applicable to cars. Regardless of the season, religiously follow the Preventive Maintenance Schedule set by the distributor-seller. Also go for genuine parts to avoid abnormal wear and tear. Make it a habit to regularly check the car’s brakes, lights, oil, water, battery, air and gas.

Airbags top recall list Faulty airbags were a major contributory factor behind another climb in automotive recalls in Europe during the first quarter of this year, according to the Recall and Notification Index published by Stericycle Expert SOLUTIONS, the global leader in automotive and product recall solutions. Conversely, the number of recalls relating to consumer products dropped by a significant 25.4%, indicating that the high figures recorded at the end of last year were an anomaly when compared with quarter on quarter trends. However, the 364 recalls recorded were still at higher levels than in four of the last seven quarters. Motor vehicle recalls show no sign of abating as the number for the quarter increased to 122 over 93 in Q4 2016. Airbags accounted for 41.4% of these incidents in passenger vehicles, compared to 18.3% in Q4, and were followed by steering and fuel related

problems. However, the sector was also hit by a number of machinery related issues and marked the largest number in one quarter during the history of the RAPEX system. In terms of the country of origin from which the recalls stemmed, Germany was again at the top of the list with 40 recalls, followed by France with 29 and the UK with 14. China registered 12 and the United States 8. Farzad Henareh, European Vice President at Stericycle Expert Solutions, commented: “Looking at an average of auto recalls over the past year it is clear to see just how sharp the rise has been. It is no secret that motor manufacturers have had challenges to deal with which are clearly reflected in the number of recalls and notifications. As the number of connected and autonomous vehicles entering the market increases, these advancements will only add to the complexity.”

Cars - Uk is still in love with them The UK’s love for cars, particularly luxury brands and their favourite models, shone through in this year’s 2017 Brand Love List report launched by enterprise social analytics leader, NetBase. BMW, Audi and Porsche all featured in the report’s top 10, which is part of a wider European report that looks at the brands consumers express the most love for in social media posts. Jaguar Land Rover, BMW 3 Series, Porsche 911 were just some of the models that consumers showed a lot of love for. This is the second year that the report has been run. In the UK, Apple held onto top spot but showed that Google, in second place, was narrowing the gap which last year was 400,000 and is now down to 130,000 with a lot of positive sentiment for Google Classroom. The European Top Five brands differed only slightly from the UK with BMW taking fourth spot and consumer goods brand Adidas coming in at fifth place. The automotive sector once again proved popular with customers expressing much love particularly in relation to the Porsche 911. While

consumer goods brands including Gucci, Adidas, Lego and Christian Dior S.A. accounted for nearly 45% of the top loved brands, they only represented 21% of the mentions. Conversely technology which was dominated by Apple and Google but also included SAP, Siemens and Dyson represented 10% of the conversation they also represented over 55% of mentions. In summary while there’s much love for consumer goods brands they still don’t even come close to the volume of technology conversation across Europe. The data was gathered using NetBase’s social media analytics platform to surface the strongest, most positive consumer emotions towards brands from 2.4 million English language posts of earned mentions inclusive of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and millions of other sources during the one-year period April 2016 to April 2017 which then identified the 25 UK brands that get the most love. Commenting on the UK report Paige Leidig, Chief Marketing Officer, NetBase said “What’s interesting about automotive is that brands represent 25% of the list but account for only 13% of the conversation suggesting that there is an opportunity for them to spread the love and engage more influencers in conversation. The dominance of technology in social conversation is no surprise but the fact that Apple and Google are so far out in front indicates that they have now become an everyday part of the English language.”

Dylan Wotherspoon hit a late third but Britain held on for victory to record a British win for only the second time since the competition began back in 1981. Head coach Bobby Crutchley said: "We are thrilled, we put in consistent performances throughout the tournament and today was a great team effort, we were rewarded for sticking to the game-plan." England and Scotland take part in the Hockey World League in London from 15-25 June. The event serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2018 World Cup in India.

Magpies return to Premier League as champions Brighton and Hove Albion, despite being the first team from the English Championship to confirm their place in next seasonâ€™s Premier League, had to settle for a runners up spot after Newcastle United leapt above them to clinch the league title in dramatic fashion. Newcastle clinched the Championship title with victory over Barnsley, after Brighton conceded a late equaliser at Aston Villa. Ayoze Perez, Chancel Mbemba and Dwight Gayle scored in a comfortable victory, but it was Jack Grealish's 89th-minute goal which sealed the Magpies' title. Perez's flicked finish made it 1-0, before Mbemba smashed in to double the lead from a Perez rebound. Gayle added a late third before Grealish's goal handed them the title. It was a comfortable win for Rafael Benitez's side - yet it looked like it would not be enough to seal top spot, after Glenn Murray's penalty had put league leaders Brighton in front at Villa Park.
