A new era for Viceroy

We visit the Spa by Viceroy at Ombria Algarve in Portugal to hear how immersive local cultural experiences are defining the hotel group’s welllness offer

Set in the rolling hills of southern Portugal, the five-star Viceroy at Ombria Algarve carves out a new niche for spa and wellness in the region. The second property to be managed by Viceroy Hotels & Resorts in Europe, it opened in October 2024 and has 141 rooms, fitness facilities, several restaurants and bars, a kids’ club, conference centre, several heated swimming pools and a spa.

Across the 150-hectare site, multiple buildings in the style of a traditional Portugese village host guest rooms, apartment residences, shared amenities and public spaces. Terraced into the landscape, the hillside retreat has stunning views of the surrounding countryside, and there is also an 18-hole golf course designed by Jorge Santana da Silva.

The vision of architectural services company WATG has been brought to life by local firm Promontorio with interior design by Wimberly Interiors. The project was inspired by the history and culture of the region, with locally sourced materials and techniques

used throughout. “Our intention was to create a sense of discovery for guests,” says Liana Hawes Young, creative director at Wimberly Interiors.

“Giving each space character through curated art, vintage pieces and custom fabrications, with regionally authentic colour palettes and materials.”

A fresh take on hospitality

The property is owned and developed by Pontos Group, a Finnish company that invests in real estate development, digitalisation and private equity funds globally. There are plans to add further private residences that will eventually spread across a number of adjacent hills.

Viceroy Hotels & Resorts manages a series of hotels and residences in Mexico, St Lucia, Serbia and in the US in Colorado, California, Chicago and Washington DC. Offering a fresh take on hospitality, centred on enriching experiences and connection, the group was acquired in 2023 by Highgate,

a New York-based company with more than 500 owned or managed properties globally. Under the Viceroy brand it has plans to open new properties across the US and Mexico.

Transforming travel

The opening of Viceroy at Ombria Algarve marked a new era for the brand with the relaunch of a concept focusing on what is described as ‘experiential storytelling’. This includes the development of curated multisensory experiences that immerse guests in the culture and beauty of each destination.

“Viceroy’s relaunch isn’t just about redefining our brand; it’s about transforming the travel experience itself to focus on what truly matters to our guests,” says Tony Machado, senior vice-president and head of design at Highgate. “By embracing innovative design and sustainable practices, we aim to create spaces that allow guests to genuinely immerse themselves in the local culture.”

This new direction offers guests the chance to connect with their surroundings, create lasting memories and leave with stories worth sharing.

“We plan to dedicate 14 rooms with direct access to the spa to retreat guests – they will be separated from the main part of the hotel to offer more connection to wellbeing.”

Guests can expect honey-making, pottery classes, cooking tuition, complimentary yoga sessions and horseback trail rides. The new approach also informs the spa concept and its delivery.

Authentic wellness

The Spa at Viceroy at Ombria Algarve opened in May 2025 and is set in a stand-alone building at the edge of the resort overlooking the rolling hills of the region. The original concept was developed by spa consultant Greg Payne, who brought over 20 years of experience in creating unique wellness offerings in luxury hospitality from Aman and IHG to Estelle Manor and Beaverbrook in the UK. Viceroy celebrates somatic practice with Taryn Toomey

Immersive in-room sessions promote guests’ physical and mental wellbeing

Viceroy Hotels & Resorts has unveiled a global wellness partnership with The Class, a renowned music-driven somatic practice founded by Taryn Toomey. The collaboration offers Viceroy guests complimentary access to a series of bespoke videos and live experiences designed to elevate mind, body, and spirit.

A series of exclusive on-property activations and curated retreats have included a special pop-up by The Class at Viceroy at Ombria Algarve in May 2025.

A total of six in-room and on-property video modules are designed to support daily grounding, energetic resets and intentional movement. “With this partnership, we’re offering guests something deeply needed in travel – the ability to land in the body, reset the nervous system, and reconnect,” says Toomey.

Reset, recharge and reconnect

“Our goal is to offer a wellness experience that supports the way people live and travel today, with treatments and rituals that help guests return home more in-tune with themselves,” says Megan Mulholland, senior vice president of brand marketing and wellness for Viceroy.

The classes invite guests to follow a sequence of five key elements central to The Class method. Each begins with a grounding warm-up to centre breath and presence, followed by repetitive movement that builds strength and endurance through exercises like squats, burpees and jumping jacks.

A focus on breathing is woven throughout, while optional sound release offers a powerful outlet for emotional expression. Each class concludes with a restorative closing sequence, encouraging deep relaxation and integration of the work.

three levels, the spa exudes a sense of place with beautiful design that pays homage to its location.

From its large retail and reception level to the treatment floor below, with eight treatment rooms including a spa suite, double and facial therapy rooms, there’s a sense of spaciousness. The therapy level is home to a hairdressers studio and manicure and pedicure lounges. Yoga and Pilates studios below lead onto a thermal suite with a sauna, two steam rooms, cold bucket, experience showers and indoor-outdoor pool surrounded by relax loungers.

Concepts and partners

The spa concept draws on the land and local brands with an emphasis on love and connection. “Our focus here is on the wellbeing of our guests,” says spa director, Ana Pedreirinho. “Our philosophy is love and connection, because to truly love others, first we need also to love ourselves.”

The spa has staged a number of retreats focusing on love and healing, as well as events celebrating the summer and winter solstices. More recently it offered a three-day Ignae Wellness Retreat in partnership with leading skincare brand Ignae, which harnesses sustainably sourced ingredients from mineral-rich thermal water around an active volcano in the Azores. The retreat blended the holistic philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine, mindfulness practice, journalling, breathwork and the latest scientific advances in cellular regeneration with sessions led by Kasia Wilkos, an expert in energy therapies.

“We choose brands for the spa that follow our values and because they are authentic,” says Pedreirinho. “This is also why we have specially curated treatment oils for guests to choose from, because it’s what you feel at the moment that we want to work on.”

Right from top: bespoke oil blends are formulated to enhance treatments; movement is a key part of the spa’s reset for guests; restorative spaces aid guest relaxation

www.lemispa.com info@lemigroup.it

Working with local artisanal growers and herbalists, the spa team has developed a range of products that combine to support the process of acceptance, intention-setting and embracing the present. Guests are encouraged to intuitively select from a trio of oil blends with their own healing properties (chamomile, lavender or rose) for use in the treatments.

A space for retreat

Key markets for the spa are the UK and US with Portugal another key contributor. Seasonal variations in guest arrivals see the US market peaking in May and the UK market in half-terms and summer. The property remains open all year, focusing on shoulder periods to offer unique experiences such a retreats, an area the team are keen to build upon.

As well as a variety of nurturing treatments including yoga, Pilates and personal training, the team also plans to introduce walking meditation. “The aim of the owning company, and also of Viceroy, is to continue to expand the offering relating to wellness retreats,” explains general manager, Daniel Ozzán.

Your future with ESPA

Driven by purpose

We talk to Noella Gabriel, ELEMIS CEO and co-founder, about the brand’s purpose-led products and treatments and what spas can expect in 2026

ELEMIS is a true premium skincare success story. Since its inception in 1990, it has grown to become one of the industry’s most recognisable names. Today, the brand is present in 110 countries, more than 700 spas, and on board 200 cruise ships, thanks to its partnership with OneSpa World.

Always evolving its offer and reach, ELEMIS has recently partnered with Anantara Spas across Europe and Luxury Family Hotels in the UK. As the brand prepares to launch its latest Pro Collagen product early in 2026, we talk to CEO and co-founder Noella Gabriel about what to expect from ELEMIS in another exciting year ahead.

What does the next 12 months have in store for ELEMIS clients and spa partners?

We will continue to advance the ELEMIS purpose. We have always been guided by the extraordinary potential of nature. What excites us now is how naturally that philosophy aligns with rapid progress in skin science – particularly in the growing understanding of skin longevity, where long-term skin health and resilience matter as much as immediate results.

We are developing next-generation formulas that deliver even greater clinical performance while supporting the skin’s long-term function and overall wellbeing.

Our spa heritage remains at the core of everything we create. Touch has always been the heartbeat of ELEMIS and in

“Our spa heritage is at the core of everything we create. Touch has always been the heartbeat of ELEMIS.”
Noella Gabriel CEO and co-founder, ELEMIS

2026 our partners will see even more high-touch, high-tech treatments that enhance personalisation while celebrating our DNA.

What can you tell us about the upcoming new Pro-Collagen product?

Launching in early 2026, Pro-Collagen Hydrating Cleansing Mousse is a sensorial, cloud-like cleanser that elevates the start of professional treatments and at-home routines. Clinically proven to deliver 125 per

cent hydration in one use*, it provides an indulgent first touchpoint and ensures therapists are able to begin every facial on skin that is comfortable, refreshed and replenished.

Nine essential oils – including lavender, geranium and eucalyptus – intensify the treatment by establishing a calming aromatic profile. Powered by our biotech-enhanced padina pavonica ferment, it delivers deep hydration and is suitable for all skin types, making it a universal

moisturising second cleanse within professional protocols.

Why are purpose-led products and treatments so important to spas?

Today’s clients look for more than visible results – they want integrity, personalisation, sensoriality and trust. ELEMIS’s purpose-led approach meets these needs by honouring our heritage while advancing with science.

Every ELEMIS experience is rooted in touch, the science of skin and the understanding that each skin is unique. Our treatments are designed to restore, enhance and transform, uniting hands-on expertise, advanced technology and clinically proven formulations.

HIGH-TECH FACIAL SKINCARE

With demand for skincare technology increasing, we spotlight the innovative devices and at-home products delivering instant results for spa customers

onsumer demand for high-tech facial skincare solutions is rapidly increasing and consequently driving new technologies to market. In fact, the global skincare technology market for devices was estimated at $14 billion (£10bn/€12bn) in 2022, according to Grand View Research, and is predicted to grow by 12 per cent annually until 2030.

Spa customers are becoming more informed about the importance of enhanced skin health and are seeking products and technologies that address their specific skin concerns. This awareness is fuelled in part by mainstream media, social media, celebrities and beauty influencers, leading to a

greater focus on aesthetics and overall skin health. Technology is advancing at a fast pace too. The development of new skincare devices – such as LED masks, facial rollers and ultrasonic devices in spas – enables guests to enhance the results of their facial treatments. There is also a growing market for at-home devices that enable consumers to replicate professional-quality treatments.

With an increasing demand and a growing desire from clients for instant results from a facial, many spas are opting to add elements of technology into their treatment menu offering to meet this need. European Spa’s Buyers’ Guide showcases the latest facial technology on the market.

A total of 236 LEDs emit the three most clinically recognised wavelengths for anti-ageing, penetrating up to 10mm into the skin: red light (633nm) boosts collagen production, reducing fine lines and wrinkles; near-infrared (830nm) energises cells to firm, tighten and brighten skin; and deep near-infrared (1072nm) targets areas where signs of ageing are more pronounced, boosting collagen production deep under the skin.

REASONS TO INVEST

Red-light therapy boosts collagen production to deliver younger-looking skin, reducing wrinkles by 30 per cent and improving plumpness by 57 per cent. The CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Face Mask has a flexible silicone shape for the best fit possible with added lip, nose and chin coverage. It reveals a glowing, refined complexion in just ten minutes, while full effects build over the course of eight weeks.

The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is reduced, with other results including a more even skin tone, enhanced radiance and improved skin firmness and smoothness.

A new standard of elegance

Technogym’s New Sand Stone collection reimagines wellness interiors with a sophisticated blend of materials, textures and design, merging authenticity and forward-thinking innovation

Aworld-leading brand for wellness, fitness and health, Technogym has revealed its latest collection, which sets a new standard of elegance for exclusive spaces.

Sand Stone, which is characterised by a warm, textured design, blends authenticity and innovation, making it ideal for the most select spa and wellness areas.

The new range offers an aesthetic inspired by nature and the warmth of typical Mediterranean sandstone.

It brings a natural, welcoming atmosphere to any wellness space, encouraging everyone to train, whatever their goal.

Among the spas to have selected Sand Stone are The Chancery Rosewood in London and the recently redesigned Coworth Park, Dorchester Collection’s country house hotel in Berkshire, UK. The new range’s neutral tones and finishes ensure the hightech products blend seamlessly with wood and stone to create authentic, immersive spaces.

A consistent uniform aesthetic

With a tactile and natural appearance, Sand Stone can help exclusive wellness spaces redefine their look.

Sand Stone’s versatile aesthetic enables the creation of wall-to-wall wellness spaces that include the best products for cardio, strength and functional training.

Together the products create a uniform, refined environment where design and performance merge into a seamless experience across all product lines. This consistent aesthetic helps

improve brand identity, customer experience and perceived value.

The Sand Stone range encompasses the Checkup, Artis cardio, Artis strength and Biostrength lines as well as Technogym Reform, allowing the creation of highly distinctive spaces.

By combining design, sustainability and performance, Sand Stone ensures every space becomes an opportunity to communicate quality, refinement and a wellness-conscious approach.

Natural finishes

Sand Stone’s innovation extends to its materials and finishes, with textures and colours that have been designed to foster a renewed connection with the natural world.

The product casings are made from an innovative plastic material that contains 2-3 per cent natural

mica for a texturised effect reminiscent of real stone. Up to 30 per cent of these components come from recycled materials.

Frames and inlays have a warm, metalised titanium finish and all the tactile surfaces that come into contact with the user, such as handles and seats, are made from an opaque warm material that’s designed for natural, comfortable interaction.

Beech and ash wood veining, used in the Technogym Reform frame, creates a warm, holistic aesthetic that invites users to train without intimidation and allows operators the opportunity to create unique and differentiated spaces.

Five of the best spas

Enjoy our winter selection of the new and iconic spas delivering wellness excellence across Europe

The spa industry is growing globally, and the most recent Global Wellness Economy report from the Global Wellness Institute valued it at $157 billion (£119 billion/€135 billion). The future looks bright as the report predicts average annual growth of 7.7 per cent until 2029.

This is welcome news for the industry across the board – from brands to global operators. Investors in wellness destinations and hotels know that a spa can increase the average length of guest stay and also boost incremental spending as wellness seeking guests immerse themselves in a variety of experiences both in and out of the spa.

European Spa shines a spotlight on some of the best new spas in the Netherlands, Italy and Germany, and revisits iconic properties in Scotland and Ireland that have benefited from recent investment and new partnerships.

Kohler Waters Spa at Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa, Scotland

The Old Course Hotel is an iconic five-star property in St Andrews, Scotland, with impressive views of the Fife coastline. Owned by Kohler Co, the property features 175 bedrooms including 34 suites and is globally renowned for its unique location on the Old Course, the oldest golf course in the world.

The hotel’s Kohler Waters Spa and fitness centre spans 2,300sqm and features 13 treatment rooms, a 20 metre pool, a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room and plunge pool, as well as a gym and fitness facilities. Guest can expect nine single treatment rooms, two doubles, one manicure and one pedicure station.

A place of contrasts

Designed by Unwin Jones Partnership, the spa recently reopened following a five-month renovation that has positioned it as one of Scotland’s best destinations for contrast therapy. New thermal facilities have been designed to celebrate ‘coorie’ – the Scottish art of finding

The upgraded hydrotherapy suite features the UK’s first Espuro Foam Experience Steam Room. The spa has also partnered with renowned wellness expert Anna Deacon, co-author of Taking the Plunge and leading advocate for cold-water wellbeing, to launch an exclusive series of seasonal wellness retreats that extend the hotel’s wellbeing experience offer.

Led by architect Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston, a long-time Aman collaborator, the redevelopment also includes remodelling of all guest rooms and the introduction of new suites. Yuki Kiyono, Aman’s global head of health and wellness, acted as spa consultant for the project.

Location-specific wellbeing

The brand’s distinct wellness philosophy is delivered in its Aman Spa across seven treatment rooms, including one Thai massage room, a 20-metre heated outdoor infinity pool and an

indoor pool. The property also features a family pool and extensive hydrotherapy facilities including a Finnish sauna, steam room, hot tub and cold plunge. Over the two floors, guests will also find a 220sqm fitness centre and yoga studio, as well as a hair and nail salon.

The spa recognises movement as an integral pathway to holistic wellness and provides daily yoga, Qigong and essential oil workshops alongside personal training sessions.

“At Aman Rosa Alpina, we blend Aman’s holistic wellness philosophy with the natural healing energy of the Dolomites,” says Nadin Costner, spa director, Aman Spa at Aman Rosa Alpina. “Our guests are encouraged to truly reconnect with themselves and with nature, by breathing in the pure mountain air, hiking through wildflower-filled meadows or skiing beneath the awe-inspiring peaks. It’s more than relaxation; it’s renewal.”

Signature spa menu

The treatment menu offers Aman’s signature therapies, which use the Aman Skincare product range. These include a series of grounding, nourishing and purifying treatments for the body, mind and emotional wellbeing.

Image Skincare puts retinol technology under the spotlight

Image Skincare has developed Ageless+ Retinol, a targeted skincare solution with patent-pending XOSM Technology to boost the performance of retinol and protect against irritation. A range of concentrations allows clients to use their recommended product every day to improve fine lines, wrinkles, radiance, pores, pigmentation and skin firmness.

The collection features six formulations with a range of retinol percentages and textures, providing a retinol option for every client. Proven to deliver visible anti-ageing results, the products form the basis of an at-home skincare routine when recommended by professional skin therapists.

XOSM Technology is a smart encapsulation system that delivers powerful antioxidants, ectoin, vitamin C and astaxanthin-rich micro-algae. As retinol works by speeding up cell turnover, this new advance has been designed to protect those new cells, allowing retinol to work at maximum capacity while reducing redness.

Regular use of the recommended products for individual skin types is said to deliver a visible reduction in fine lines and wrinkles while reducing the appearance of pores and rough skin texture. Clients are also promised improved radiance, skin health and youthfulness, a decrease in visible hyperpigmentation and a reduction in visible redness. Skin hydration is also boosted. Cutting-edge skin technology

We talk to Monica Poli, [comfort zone]’s skin tech and device product manager, about how the brand’s lastest technologies can boost your spa business

Responding to demand for non-invasive and non-surgical skin rejuvenation, Italian skincare expert [comfort zone] has developed two new technologies for skin analysis and refinement.

Longevilift is a four-in-one device that boosts skin renewal, revitalisation and redefinition of the facial contours. Alongside this, Skin Test 2.0 offers rapid and in-depth analysis of many skin concerns.

“We developed Longevilift in response to the rising demand for advanced, high-performance skincare treatments that remain non-invasive, and fully customisable,” says Monica Poli, skin tech and device product manager at [comfort zone].

Technology is a key part of [comfort zone]’s innovation strategy to boost the efficacy of its treatments, However, tech is always designed to work in combination with touch – effectiveness must always go hand in hand with care and comfort to support spas’ competitiveness and business success.

“Spas

can select the most appropriate [comfort zone] line for the guest’s needs.”

This page: Skin Test 2.0 offers fast analysis of clients’ skincare needs before Longevilift addresses these requirements

A new dimension to skincare Longevilift was designed to combat wrinkles, blemishes, dull complexion and skin blemishes. It offers a multidimensional professional facial treatment that acts on four dimensions of the skin: the physiology, muscular, vascular and nervous systems.

“Longevilift provides spas with a complete facial rejuvenation system that delivers visible results from the very first session, enhancing hydration by 47 per cent and elasticity by 22 per cent after only one treatment,” explains Poli.

Four integrated technologies (aquapeel, vacuum, mesoporation and microcurrent) allow therapists to tailor each protocol to individual skin conditions, making the device highly versatile and able to serve both corrective and preventive anti-ageing needs.

Fitting Longevilift into your business

The device is available to purchase and flexible leasing options are available, with one treatment course per month potentially covering costs. Longevilift is designed to work with all [comfort zone] professional formulations.“

The device supports multiple concentrated solutions and boosters that can be selected according to the client’s skin condition,” says Poli.

The technology integrates with the brand’s professional protocols and can be paired with targeted skincare to address signs of ageing, texture, blemishes or sensitivity.

“Treatments are fully customisable,” says Poli. “Spas can select the most appropriate [comfort zone] line for the guest’s needs, making the technology not only effective, but adaptable across multiple client profiles.”

The 1,235sqm spa is the latest addition to the 300-year-old coaching inn and hotel, which has been transformed by entrepreneur couple Iain and Clair Wilson.

Ffolkespa is a self-styled ‘house of fun’ with the tagline ‘you’ve never spa’d like this before’. Nothing about it could be called understated. Far from a hushed, tranquil setting, it has a fun, unpretentious and laid-back vibe with bold colourways, disco balls

suspended from the ceilings and a giant 16-person hot tub with adjacent cocktail bar.

“We’re taking a very different approach to the standard spa experience, one we’re hoping is going to resonate with spa-goers,” says owner Iain Wilson. “We wanted to rip up the usual spa rules, so there’s no need for guests to whisper or move silently from room to room. The music is lively, the contrast therapy is vibrant – our aim was to create something more immersive than guests have seen before.”

A focus on contrast therapy

Five distinct spa zones offer 12 thermal experiences on the indoor-outdoor ground floor. As well as the hot tub and swim-up bar, there is a 20-person global sauna, a herbal sauna, a salt sauna and aroma and salt steam rooms. To complete the contrast therapy circuit there is a cold plunge pool, a mist shower and an ice fountain. Thermal hardware was provided by Anapos. The large Global Sauna plays host to regular aufguss rituals led by qualified sauna masters.

Upstairs, Ffolkespa takes on a more traditional zen-like spa vibe. The lounge area has comfy hanging chairs while the cocoon-like Snooze Room has eight water relaxation beds supplied by the British Waterbed Company.

In four treatment rooms there is a simple menu of

TempleSpa treatments, with two massages, two facials and two body treatments to choose from. “We felt TempleSpa was a youthful-minded company that fit our concept and our spa well, offering something exclusive but not unattainable,” says Wilson.

“We deliberately kept the treatment experience quite narrow to begin with, and we’ll expand our offer once we gauge where demand lies,” he adds. “We’re also working with TempleSpa to create an in-room Bath Butler experience. Guests will be able to come to reception and select some complimentary products for their bath, as a wellness add-on for their room.”

There is further space already allocated for three more treatment rooms, which will be opened as demand increases. Lastly, the adult soft-play area is a large cosy lounge overlooking the lower level, with giant mattresses, private cabins and places to relax. “The idea behind the adult soft-play was to create a fun space where guests could go to wind down,

without feeling the need to tiptoe around and talk in hushed voices,” says Wilson.

Uniquely social

The Wilsons have worked with spa consultancy Spa Creators to bring the project to fruition over the past two years. Founder Alistair Johnson helped envisage the fun-focused concept, which is targeting the age 25-40 demographic. “A predominantly outdoor, hugely socially focused spa, Ffolkespa is bright, “Ffolkespa is very different to anything that’s already in the market, creating a new category that’s a world away from what spa is traditionally seen as in the UK.”

unique, youthful and bold,” says Johnson. “It’s very different to anything that’s already in the market, creating a new category that’s a world away from what spa is traditionally seen as in the UK. Iain and the team were heavily involved in everything from the design to the actual build, which helped the project grow organically and saw the birth of some of the more off-piste ideas, such as our lively musical Disco Toilet, that make Ffolkespa so truly unique.”

Wilson managed the project build, working alongside the construction team to keep costs to a minimum. “We built the saunas, steam rooms, pool surround and plant room ourselves,” he says. “Maybe a more conventional hotel operator would opt for a full turnkey approach, but we wanted to be hands-on so the project and our ideas would grow side by side.”

Picking apart the package

Wilson says he was keen to shake up the way spa packages are offered at Ffolkespa. Wristbands allow guests to move seamlessly between the hotel and spa, and are also a cashless way to pay for drinks in the cocktail bar. Sixteen of the 22 rooms include unlimited spa access as part of the stay, with overnight stays running longer than average – from

Ffolkes has already created 32 new jobs at the spa, with ten of its new team members training to become fully-qualified massage therapists as part of a dedicated Spa Academy programme. Those who qualify will secure a Level 3 CPD Accreditation, as well as a guaranteed full or part-time position in the spa team at Ffolkespa or its sister spa at The Pigs in Edgefield, north Norfolk.

“We opened the Spa Academy up to anyone who was looking for a change of career, or youngsters working elsewhere in the business, who want to get a foot on the career ladder,” says Iain Wilson. “Staff recruitment is an industry-wide issue, so we tackled it head on, knowing that offering a qualification is a good incentive. In order to open our three remaining treatment rooms, we need 25 therapists – this is our solution for servicing our already increasing demand.”

noon on the day of arrival until the same time the following day – to allow for what Wilson calls “real, unrushed relaxation.”

“Those extra few hours – from noon to noon instead of the usual 3pm check-in and 10am check out – make such a difference to the guest experience, and how relaxed they feel when they leave, which in turn impacts whether they’ll come back,” says Wilson.

The half-day spa (four hours) and half-day

Above: the spa offers guests luxurious treatments from partner brand TempleSpa

treatment packages (five hours) include a postspa feast in the restaurant. Morning bookings get the Afternoon Street Tea – an eclectic take on the traditional offering, while afternoon guests get £25 to spend with the street food traders. “We want to remove any restrictive element and give people time to really explore, without feeling like the clock is ticking,” says Wilson.

Breaking the mould

Sustainability starts with mindful decisions at Ffolkespa. Wilson and Johnson opted for an air-source heat pump for the cold plunge, an on-site laundry and combined heat and power, where hot water is the byproduct of electricity generation. “Everything’s insulated for maximum energy efficiency; we chose a stainless steel hot pool so it retains the heat and everything is triple glazed,” says Wilson.

Interiors are all locally sourced from Norfolk businesses, which also adds to the spa’s charm. The Ffolkes Hotel has been transformed under the Wilson ownership over the last nine years, boasting container golf (crazy golf in repurposed shipping containers), a variety of weekly street food vendors and a bright, colourful style.

The hotel’s rooms include three standalone Spa Cabins built in shipping containers, with private hot tubs and saunas. Each is boldly decorated with eclectic touches such as dartboards, drench showers, hot tubs and a bathtub cinema.

“The spa is an extension of the master brand, so it has all been built to mirror that high-energy, fun identity we’ve created at Ffolkes,” says Wilson. The Wilsons also own sister property, The Pigs, a countryside spa and pub in Edgefield, north Norfolk, and Byfords, a boutique B&B in Holt.

“We’ve already seen occupancy jump considerably since the spa launched in September,” says Wilson.

Phase two is now evolving and will feature a coastal theme. “In my head it’s got beach huts, an an ice cream parlour, individual hot tubs, perhaps a tea room,” says Wilson. “We have still quite a lot of space that we can grow into in the future, and we already have four individual stainless steel hot tubs ready to be installed when the time is right. Everything we do has to create the right energy; there’s lots of ideas and innovation still to come.”

EXPERT GUIDE TO HYDROTHERMAL EXPERIENCES

European Spa explores innovative new hydrothermal experiences with advice from leading suppliers to inform the future investment of evolving spa businesses

As consumer wellness priorities change and spa guests increasingly seek experiences that are more sustainable, socially connected, inclusive and transformative. Communal sauna culture is experiencing a global renaissance and contrast therapy is becoming ever more mainstream. Once considered a niche wellness practice, using heat and cold to aid relaxation has become a key expectation of modern spas and consumers now expect accessible hot-and-cold contrast therapy as part of their wellness rituals. With demand from operators for more innovative and increasingly complex hydrothermal suites, suppliers have risen to the challenge. Ever more diverse offerings are deeply rooted in communal wellness and go beyond the functional and provide room for human connection. New takes on more traditional heat facilities such as saunas, steam rooms, rasuls and hammams are also proliferating.

Investment and installation

Due to the complexity of installing hydrothermal spaces correctly, alongside the considerable investment required, it’s important to research the market and gain a clear understanding of how thermal areas can be designed, constructed and operated.

Wet areas, for example, often require more space than expected to accommodate plant rooms and behind-the-scenes equipment, while build quality, maintenance requirements and durability are all vital considerations.

It’s also essential to strike a balance between thermal experiences, cold therapies and temperate areas, with sustainability and running costs always key considerations.

To help guide operators seeking to elevate their spa offering, European Spa has spoken to key suppliers to find out the leading trends in this space and spotlight some of the innovative new solutions available.

Barr + Wray

With expertise in everything water-based since 1959, Barr + Wray is a world-leading provider of both thermal experiences and spa engineering, design and build solutions

What trends should spa investors be considering as we go into 2026?

The focus in many of our upcoming projects is on spaces where guests can come together to recover and relax by using saunas, recovery suites, water circuits and ice bath lounges. This movement towards offering more communal, social wellbeing spaces will become increasingly popular.

Spas are changing how they use their spaces. Multisensory offerings are moving into more popular spa areas, with the guest experience enhanced by pools, steam rooms and salt float pools that encompass lights, water, sound and scent.

Investors should be looking to emphasise customised experiences and distinctive design concepts that differentiate their brand, complemented by investments in cutting-edge equipment such as cryotherapy, salt inhalation and infrared technology.

What makes Barr + Wray an ideal partner for thermal installations?

With more than 60 years’ experience and offices in both the UK and Dubai, Barr + Wray brings a wealth of global experience to every spa project.

A design-led company, our Spa Consultancy service is run by a team of interior designers and engineers who have been involved in the creation of many of the world’s top spas.

environments that cater to every client’s preference, ensuring each experience is unique. We collaborate with spa owners, architects and designers to envisage immersive and inviting spaces that suit their project brief and work well for the guest.

With decades of experience, our project teams guide clients throughout the design stages and into the procurement process, ensuring clear and precise coordination of everything

from design and installation to quality aftersales and maintenance.

Investing in Barr + Wray’s equipment means less burden on owners and operators, full integration and support, and overall better operational uptime.

What advice would you give spas thinking about a thermal installation?

We have always advocated investing in larger thermal cabins and spaces as they can vastly improve the overall guest experience. There are now so many diverse hydrothermal experiences readily available.

Aufguss is taking off in ever more countries and consumers are beginning to expect thermal offerings that have the wow factor.

With the right vision and creativity, spas can create a truly wonderful hydrothermal offer and make additional revenue in the process.

Hammams can become the sociable heart of your spa – alternatively a VIP treatment room is a great way of delivering a special spa experience within a smaller footprint.

Contrast therapy using saunas and ice baths has become popular in spas worldwide as they offer a mix of wellbeing benefits and have trend appeal. People love the idea of doing something difficult but rewarding. www.barrandwray.com

Sauna360

A world-leading sauna and steam supplier with offices in Finland, Sweden, the UK and the US, Sauna360 brings 100 years of design and manufacturing expertise to each of its spa projects

How are current trends shaping demand for hydrothermal facilities?

The resurgence of social wellness is a trend that’s burgeoning and looks set to grow further in the coming year. A broadly encompassing trend, social wellness encapsulates everything from the vibrant, energetic practice of aufguss and hot and cold experiences to more relaxing forms such as mud rituals and communal mindfulness sessions.

The common theme is experiences designed for group participation with an element of guidance and instruction. The ‘big three’ – quality sauna, steam and spa – are still the best experiences you can provide.

How is the industry embracing this demand for communal wellness?

Sauna360 has recently completed its first hot-and-cold concept for the Everlast Group in its new Liverpool city centre club. The project includes a large sauna seating up to 16 people. What’s quite special is that the sauna can be divided into two distinct areas

– a hot, dry Himalayan salt sauna operated between 85˚C and 95˚C with low humidity, similar to the traditional Finnish sauna, and also a herbal sauna that is operated at lower temperatures to achieve a gentle humidity laden with herbal fragrance.

Alternatively, the saunas can join together become a large theatre that is suitable for aufguss ceremonies with a saunameister. We have also installed an automated infusion system as an alternative way to offer this intense experience to guests.

From above: Sauna360 installations at Damu spa in London and Everlast Gym in Liverpool, UK

RECENT UK SPA PROJECTS

Damu at The Mandrake, London

South Lodge Hotel and Spa, West Sussex Hale Country Club, Cheshire

The Everlast Group has also installed cold plunge tubs to offer a full contrast bathing experience.

At the other end of the social wellness spectrum, Sauna360 has developed a mud ritual offering for the Damu Spa at the Mandrake in London.

The journey comprises a warming shower and then aroma steam, followed by a cooling shower and finally a large mud room for up to eight people. All the muds are stored in a central preparation area where people can gather and enjoy mixing and applying them, under the guidance of a spa assistant.

These are two vibrant, innovative and ultimately relaxing experiences that work well in a new facility but equally can be retrofitted to an existing thermal area.

What are the main considerations for spas installing thermal equipment?

For aufguss, apart from the size of the sauna, the main design requirement is a central heater with a large enough quantity of stone for the infusions. The bench configurations should ideally be three tiers to provide a wide temperature variance.

Another factor to consider is the balance between thermal rooms and relaxation areas. Loungers and seats are often lacking in hydrothermal areas, but in reality guests are likely to spend equal time in both places so getting the layout right is crucial.

Ensure you use the correct insulation, waterproofing, render, adhesives and finishes or risk increased running and maintenance costs across the life of the project. Environments with high temperatures, humidity, essences and salts require special materials, equipment, ventilation and care. www.sauna360uk.com

KLAFS

With almost 100 years of experience, KLAFS is a sauna and spa manufacturer that continues to set industry benchmarks through pioneering design and state-of-the-art wellness technologies.

How are hydrothermal wellness spaces evolving to meet changing demand?

The evolution of wellness is being driven by a global focus on preventive health and longevity. Guests seek to be immersed in a truly unique and authentic experience. The art of creating atmospheres and crafting spaces that can be felt the moment you enter has never been more important.

Spa design has advanced and materials, technology, light, scents, textures and architecture must all merge into a seamless, multisensory environment. Spa partners like KLAFS must constantly be redefining the boundaries of what’s possible, creating hydrothermal areas that give guests a truly unique experience, inspire inner calm and make deep relaxation a tangible reality.

Tell us how KLAFS is working to meet this demanding environment.

Our Espuro foam steam bath transforms the traditional steam room experience into a multisensory ritual, offering gentle cleansing and deep relaxation. A fine, warm foam envelops the body while aromatic steam infuses the air, creating a cocooning environment. The automatic foam generation system ensures consistent quality and hygiene, while the elegant design integrates seamlessly into modern spa architecture.

Espuro combines the soothing humidity of a steam bath with the tactile pleasure of soft foam, offering a distinctive, memorable experience, helping spas differentiate their offer through unique sensory storytelling. Automated foam technology delivers perfectly dosed, hygienically generated foam without manual intervention, and the system includes automated cleaning and maintenance routines

for operational safety. Espuro can be retrofitted to existing KLAFS steam baths or combined with other warm bathing concepts such as rasuls, hammams or caldariums.

How do your products elevate the thermal experience for spa guests?

Our aim is to bring tradition into the future. Take infusion ceremonies, which have long been beloved by sauna enthusiasts. Now we have developed the Vitality Boost, an automated infusion experience that enables perfectly timed, precise and repeatable infusions that distribute heat and humidity evenly throughout the cabin. With Vitality Boost, spa operators can offer guests the full physical and mental benefits of a sauna infusion

We’ve combined precision engineering

with wellness expertise to create a seamless, high-impact sauna ritual comparable to that of a professional sauna master.

Automated water dosing prevents errors and reduces liability risk, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and the system uses tested and standardised parameters to guarantee a high-quality, repeatable experience every time.

Similarly to Espuro, a retrofitting option means Vitality Boost can be installed into existing saunas with minimal disruption.

TechnoAlpin Indoor

Offering indoor snow solutions for a variety of concepts, the Italian experts create multi-sensory cold experiences that use real snow to deliver immersive guest journeys

How are current trends shaping demand for hydrothermal facilities?

With the current emphasis on hydrothermal wellness in spas, increased demand for communal wellness rituals and growing interest around contrast bathing, snow is set to play an ever-greater part in spa experiences.

Spas are evolving to offer more immersive, multisensory experiences with natural elements that enhance relaxation and support both mental and physical wellbeing. As a nature-based cooling element, snow fits seamlessly into the spa setting and aligns with the growing movement toward biophilic design, as more spas seek to bring the outdoor in, for greater wellbeing.

GLOBAL WELLNESS SUMMIT 2025

European Spa present the key takeaways from the recent gathering of wellness leaders from around the world, held in Dubai

The 19th annual Global Wellness Summit (GWS) was held at the newly opened Mandarin Oriental Downtown, Dubai from November 18-21. Leaders from across the spa, medicine, biotech and traditional wellness industries joined hospitality, tech and real estate professionals for immersive presentations and networking.

Inspiring 574 delegates from more than 50 countries, this year’s theme of ‘Longevity Through a Wellness Lens’ focused on recent accelerations in the race to extend healthspan.

“We designed the 2025 Summit to be a launchpad for the next chapter in longevity; one driven by science, collaboration and impact,” said Nancy Davis, chief creative officer and executive director at GWS.

Topics addressed included breakthroughs in gene editing, precision medicine and AI, as well as the rise of longevity in wellness tourism, real estate and hospitality.

The three-day event was opened by GWS co-founder, chair and CEO, Susie Ellis, who predicted significant

change and championed longevity as the watchword for 2026. “The winds are most certainly shifting,” she said.

“And while it may feel like everything is happening at the speed of light, outlining the way forward for longevity will take time, collaboration and clarity.

“The term longevity has exploded in just the last year... we are once again presented with both the opportunity and the responsibility to truly change the world and make a significant contribution to a better future.”

European Spa presents our key takeaways from the stage in Dubai.

“Hospitality should support existing wellness regimes”

Ömer K Isvan, president at Servotel, discussed the historical significance and evolution of the spa industry in hospitality, noting its shift from a spa-centric focus to a more personalised wellness approach.

“Instead of allocating a moment, or a week, to visit the spa, wellness and longevity has become part and parcel of daily life. Everybody has their own regime,” he said.

Isvan addressed the importance of integrating individual wellness regimes into hospitality experiences, rather than just offering spa services.

“What the hospitality world needs to recognise is that individuals have their own regimes and they travel with them. Hospitality can be a very good background for that – a facilitator, enabler and supporter of individual regimes,” he said. “It’s important to create environments that enable those routines and either deepen the wellness offer or focus on excellent facilitation.”

“The convergence of longevity, luxury and hospitality”

Sam Nazarian, founder and CEO of sbe Entertainment, discussed his journey in the hospitality industry, from building more than 100 hotels globally to

5. Delegates enjoyed networking in the evening

partnering with Tony Robbins and Fountain Life in 2021, leading to his immersion in the world of longevity following the discovery of a brain aneurysm, which saved his life.

Nazarian emphasised the importance of environments that prioritise wellness.

“If people are curious, that means they’re focusing on health, and if they’re focusing on their health, that’s half the battle,” he said. “People want to be the captain of their own ship when it comes to health, but there aren’t currently enough locations to help those people make changes, which is why we founded The Estate.”

He made the case for a longevity ecosystem that gives customers the best access to healthcare, which is what he believes future customers will demand.

“About 80 per cent of Millennials and Gen Z already look at longevity and wellness offerings as the most important thing when booking travel,” Nazarian said.

“Measuring the impact of social media on the beauty industry”

Olivia Houghton, insights and engagement director at the Future Laboratory, took a deep dive into beauty industry trends, highlighting the homogenisation of beauty standards, driven by digital culture and social media algorithms.

The global beauty market was valued at $1.35 billion (£1 billion/ €1.15 billion) in 2024, projected to reach $1.7 billion by 2028. It’s a challenging space as only 10 per cent of new beauty brands succeed long-term. Topics also covered the impact of digital platforms on beauty ideals.

“Research from 2025 shows that Instagram’s filters and algorithms promote whiteness, cultural appropriation and cosmetic surgery ideals,” Houghton said. “We internalise what we’re seeing in the digital world so, over time, these features become the standard of attractiveness.”

“Spirituality as a pillar of longevity” Anna Bjurstam, wellness pioneer at Six Senses, shared personal experiences while exploring the impact of childhood trauma on daily life. She said integrating spiritual practices into longevity and wellness programming could reduce mortality by 33 per cent, depression by 82 per cent and suicide risk by 94 per cent. Bjurstam said science, spirituality and community can enhance longevity and wellbeing. “If we truly aim to extend life, we must also expand what it means to live,” she said. “Spiritual practices give us meaning, belonging and connection. Jeremy Jauncey, founder and CEO of travel brand Beautiful Destinations discussed the evolution and expansion of Kerzner International’s luxury hospitality brands with CEO Philippe Zuber.

“Part of our dream at Kerzner has been how to embed wellness across different assets and brands within the group,” said Zuber. “I think what’s most important to the future of wellness is to not ignore what we have in front of us, what the current guest wants from a wellness experience. They have a minimum expectation to be able to do more for their wellness when they travel than what they do home. Each brand needs to offer something very unique that inspires the guest.”

“Storytelling and mindset at the heart of authenticity”

A discussion entitled ‘The next frontier of wellness tourism: mindset, storytelling and human authenticity’, addressed Saudi Arabia’s transformative shift in wellness tourism. Lindsay Madden-Nadeau, senior director, wellness strategy at Red Sea Global highlighted the development of AMAALA, a comprehensive health and wellness destination, as part of Vision 2030. The project includes more than 100 luxury spas and significant investments in wellness infrastructure. “I think authenticity is a key component – it’s really the opposite of performative wellness,” she said. “We need to make sure our partners and our operators align with that.”

Marisa Peer, founder of Marisa Peer School, and Alexandra Venison, a contributing writer at Vogue Arabia, underscored the need for credible, culturally rooted wellness experiences to foster genuine health and wellness

Robert Hanea, founder and CEO of Therme Group, discussed his vision for the business, which he believes will impact up to 30 million people globally by 2030. “A lot of people don’t really want to be in the cities – at Therme we have a completely different philosophy. We want to create city infrastructures... that are an integral part of their entire life,” he said.

“Therme is not a place where you go two weeks a year; it’s a weekly routine. Take our facility in Bucharest – we see 1.7 million people a year in a country where the total population is around 18 million. Therme’s aim is to become part of the fabric of a person’s life, a place they go for their wellbeing, for social connection, and to engage with their community on a very deep level.”

“A growing global economy”

Findings from the Global Wellness Economy Monitor 2025 report were shared, stating that the global wellness economy is now worth $6.8 trillion, 35 per cent more than in 2019. The report reveals that, from 2023-2024, the wellness economy grew by 7.9 per cent. Spending on wellness is now 35 per cent higher than in 2019 and it predicts the wellness economy will expand by 7.6 per cent annually over the next four years, reaching nearly $9.8 trillion in 2029.

The magic of aufguss

Having seen explosive global growth in 2025, sauna ceremonies are a hot trend to watch. Cassandra Cavanah explores the potential of this new worldwide movement

Few spa rituals have risen to prominence as fast or as theatrically as the aufguss movement. Whether delivered in a modest ten-person sauna or a 350-seat event sauna during an Aufguss WM Championship, the experience has evolved far beyond its modest roots in the last two years. Loosely translated from the German word for ‘infusion’, aufguss refers to the act of pouring water over hot stones. This simple act now underpins a choreographed ritual combining aromas, heat, music and, increasingly, sophisticated lighting and audio. What began as a regional bathing custom,

popular in Germany, Austria and Italy, has become a multisensory performance art that resonates strongly with wellness seekers globally.

Show aufguss versus traditional rituals

Theatrical aufguss sessions fill large event saunas, sometimes for up to 350 people, drawing competitors from around the world to events like the Aufguss WM Championship and inspiring a new generation of wellness professionals. Show aufguss is high-energy and performance driven. It’s built around choreography, storytelling, music, costumes and dramatic towel work. Designed to entertain large audiences, it is the format used in

Cassandra Cavanah

Aufguss WM national and world competitions.

This evolution does not leave traditional ritual aufguss behind. Calmer and more accessible for most spas, the ritual uses essential oils, gentle towel movements and breath-led sequencing to guide guests through a restorative heat experience. It is the form of aufguss most spa-goers encounter first.

Why is aufguss booming now?

The rise in the popularity of aufguss reflects a broader cultural shift from individualistic wellness toward more communal, human-led experiences. In an era dominated by screens, people are seeking wellbeing moments centred on presence, storytelling and multisensory immersion.

Younger generations are also seeking alternatives to alcohol-led socialising, favouring experiences rooted in wellbeing rather than escapism. A sauna ritual offers a powerful, shareable moment. Guests feel transported and moved by story, scent, sound and the shared intensity of the heat. At a time when spas compete on emotional resonance as much as amenities, aufguss delivers something

few experiences can: a wellness journey that feels equally restorative and entertaining.

Sweat bathing in spas

For operators, the commercial case is clear. “Aufguss is a performance, like art, and adds value to the total spa experience,” says international aufguss ambassador and newly appointed Aufguss WM president, Lasse Eriksen. “It attracts new audiences while regular guests often stay longer before or after a session, boosting revenue from food, beverages, retail and treatments.”

Many spas now treat aufguss as more than a stand-alone ritual; it can become a week-long event. Hoar Cross Hall in Staffordshire, UK did exactly this, hosting a European-style Sauna Ritual Showcase with guest sauna masters performing hourly shows and classic rituals to consistently full sessions. “We had rituals running on the hour, every hour, from

half-eight in the morning to half-seven at night and people were queuing to get in,” says head of spa, Lori Davis.”

Outside these special weeks, Hoar Cross Hall offers two or three aufguss sessions a day as part of its programming, giving strong added value to its 300 daily guests and members. The response has been so positive that Davis says aufguss will remain a part of the spa’s offering.

Operational flow and ROI

Beyond revenue uplift, aufguss improves operational flow. Deborah Carr, founder of Anada Spa and Wellness, director at the British Sauna Society and lead for the UK’s Aufguss WM programme, explains: “I used to walk around a spa and no one was using the sauna or steam room... aufguss changes this by moving guests through different thermal experiences and helping manage capacity more evenly. It’s also ideal for corporate groups. You can bring groups

Clockwise from right: ice infused with essential oils is thrown onto coals to create steam; practising aufguss choreography; a rapt sauna audience; a theatrically masked master of sauna ceremonies

Community, emotion and crafsmanship

Founded in 2017, Aufguss WM was created to professionalise the discipline of aufguss with shared rules, national qualifiers and certified judges across solo and team categories. What began with a handful of early adopters has expanded to 18 competing countries in 2025, with 20 (including Sweden and Iceland) registered for 2026. The UK now hosts national qualifiers; the USA and Canada entered in 2025, reflecting the fast-growing North American bathhouse and heat-experience market.

A combination of ritual and spectacle

At the 2025 finals at Aquardens, situated outside Verona in Italy, guests queued long before each performance to witness choreographed heat rituals set to music, fragrance and narrative, part ceremony, part theatre. A week later, the same sauna hosted Bizet’s Carmen, underscoring how firmly aufguss now sits at the intersection of wellness, ritual and spectacle.

Host venues have grown from intimate European saunas to major thermal destinations including Satama in Germany, Thermen Bussloo and Thermen Berendonck in the Netherlands and this year’s finals host, Aquardens.

Left from top: 2025 Aufguss WM solo winners Róbert Zidek (second), Sigrid van Rijswijk (first) and Ingrid Tillmann (third); aufguss can open up new avenues of professional dvelopment for spa teams

together in a team-building way instead of sending them off individually for treatments,” she says.

Aufguss is inherently episodic with rituals changing daily, seasonally and with each sauna master. This built-in novelty helps drive footfall and repeat visitation. “Memorable, high-quality experiences encourage guests to return to try new themes or different masters,” says Eriksen. Davis notes that Hoar Cross Hall has members who used to travel abroad for aufguss experiences and now find they can access the same experience at their home spa, encouraging repeat guests.

Carr sees this clearly: “It becomes a point of difference. Clients come back, and membership retention increases.”

An exciting new training path for spa teams

One of the stand out benefits of aufguss for operators is the impact on staff morale and development. The sauna master role is highly creative and performative – an experience many spa team members value. “It creates an opportunity for

According to international aufguss ambassador and newly appointed aufguss WM president, Lasse Eriksen, the appeal is deeply human. “People want something that blends community, emotion and craftsmanship,” he says. “Aufguss brings all that together. It feels both rooted in tradition and completely of this moment. I believe interest is still in its early stages. The next few years will bring new countries, new interpretations and new talent pushing the craft forward.”

young people to have careers on a wellbeing path that didn’t exist before,” says Carr. “Sauna masters are trailblazers. It’s incredibly creative and fulfilling.

You get to be an artist.”

As with fitness instructors, skilled sauna masters develop strong followings and deep engagement with guests. For Davis, finding and encouraging internal champions was key at Hoar Cross Hall. “I found two people who absolutely loved it and they inspired the rest of the team,” she says.

Hoar Cross Hall now runs eight to ten training programmes a year, often in partnership with Carr and visiting European trainers. Cross-department participation – facilities, F&B and front-of-house – has strengthened the sense of shared purpose across the spa team, something harder to achieve in treatment-focused roles.

Designing

saunas for the next era of ritual

As more spas and their guests embrace aufguss, design considerations have become increasingly important. Design for Leisure has been championing aufguss in both the UK and the US for years, and is focused on helping operators build the right infrastructure to scale the movement properly.

Highlights from Aufguss WM 2025

The 2025 Aufguss WM World Championships, held in September at Aquardens Spa in Verona, Italy, delivered one of the most immersive and competitive finals the event has hosted to date.

Staged inside Aquardens’ brand-new Sauna del Deserto, the largest event sauna in the world with seating for up to 350 guest, the championship brought together elite sauna masters from 18 countries following a full season of national qualifiers across Europe, Japan and North America.

In the solo category, the title went to Sigrid van Rijswijk of the Netherlands for her powerful performance False Fortune. The Dutch champion impressed judges with her technical precision, emotional range and storytelling finesse. The team competition was won by Róbert Židek, Barbora Brožová and Gábor Tapolcai with their standout performance Our Fair Lady, praised for its creativity, synchronisation and atmospheric depth.

From top right: Gábor Tapolcai, Barbora Brožová and Róbert Židek at the Auguss WM World Championships; sauna rituals can change seasonally, encouraging repeat visits; solo Aufguss WM champion Sigrid van Rijswijk of the Netherlands

CEO Don Genders believes that designing a truly effective event sauna requires a different mindset.

“When you design an event sauna, especially for show aufguss, it has to be purpose-built from the outset,” he says. “It isn’t simply a traditional sauna but larger, although those can work fine for ritual aufguss. For show aufguss, the heater, acoustics, lighting, seating and even the control room all play into the performance. Creating a space that supports choreography, narrative, heat distribution, visibility and sound means treating the sauna as a performance environment from the outset.

“Event saunas require adequate height and volume for heat distribution; multi-layered lighting and sound; seating capacity suited to performance visibility; ventilation and humidity control that support both safety and spectacle; and circulation space for theatrical movement.”

Design for Leisure is the official Aufguss WM US country partner and runs the Aufguss USA National Championship, which is returning in 2026 in partnership with Bathhouse, a fast-growing New York-based chain of social wellness clubs.

Clockwise from above left: performances take on a variety of styles; aufguss is warmly received by spectators; Farris Bad’s Lasse Eriksen; Deborah Carr of the British Sauna Society; Don Genders of Design for Leisure

A new generation of talent

With new national championships launching, younger practitioners entering the field and more event saunas being designed into modern wellness clubs, the next aufguss era will be one of expansion and innovation. From the UK’s rapidly growing programmes at spas including Galgorm, Rudding Park and Hoar Cross Hall, to North America’s burgeoning bathhouse scene, the appetite for ritual-based wellness is unmistakable.

Lasse Eriksen’s vision includes wider international reach, cross-cultural training exchanges, and nurturing emerging talent. “We’re still in the very early stages; there’s so much potential,” he says.

Oberoi Group unveils transformative ASMI

Inspired by Indian wisdom and supported by contemporary practices, ASMI by Oberoi is a lifestyle framework concepts designed to strengthen alignment and vitality. The concept has been developed by the Oberoi Group’s associate vicepresident of spa and wellness, Dr Anuradha Mathad, and longevity expert Bryan Hoare, who bring their unique expertise in clinical wellness, traditional medicine, human performance and luxury hospitality.

“ASMI is built on five simple bases for living well: movement, nutrition, bodywork, breath and mindfulness,” says Hoare. “The design is integrated, personal, and made for real life.”

Reflective practices

The name ASMI is Sanskrit for ‘I am’ and taps into the idea that personal wellbeing grows from daily decisions that move people toward living well. ASMI by Oberoi guides guests back to their centre through an integrated approach based on the Indian philosophy of pancha kosha – the five layers of the human self. The programme frames a clear

lifestyle arc: first, support physiology and biochemistry through movement and healthy eating; then ensure recovery and rest while cultivating presence through breath and mindfulness. The ultimate aim is to engage with deeper meaning in living a well life.

Each ASMI journey begins with a reflective wellness assessment. The assessment tool, I am Aware, helps guests recognise their current state and set direction. This informs a personalised programme complemented by ASMI cuisine that supports energy, recovery and clarity. www.oberoihotels.com

Synergies for success

As collaborations, pop-ups and new collaborations increase, we explore how healing retreats from renowned wellness destinations are being showcased at partner properties

Agrowing trend in the hospitality industry is seeing providers go beyond simply engaging the services of a visiting practitioner in favour of harnessing the full expertise of external providers to provide their guests with in-house wellness services.

Some properties may join forces with other leading wellness operators to boost their profile in a new or important market. This broadens the offering of the host property, allowing them to test new concepts while also creating excitement, interest and engagement with their core client base. For the visiting brand, it can reaffirm its place in an existing market or offer a new introduction for potential new guests.

There’s a lot to gain from these kinds of collaborations, if handled with authenticity and a defined purpose and objective.

Partnerships for success

In 2025, renowned Thai wellness resort Kamalaya Koh Samui partnered with Estelle Manor on its first Eynsham Baths Retreat in the UK. This unique retreat brought together

renowned practitioners from Kamalaya alongside the baths’ esteemed master in residence, Manos Dimoudis. It featured a series of holistic treatments from both properties alongside chakra meditation and chanting, pranayama breathwork and two expertly guided workshops – Building a Resilient Mind and Ayurvedic Wisdom for Inner Balance. Meals were co-created by Kamalaya and Estelle Manor’s executive chef Richard Bias to align with the Thai property’s cooking methods.

“Our concept is to partner with a like-minded property in one of our feeder markets and create a synergistic retreat by taking Kamalaya to them,” says Gopal Kumar, general manager and group director, wellness development, operations and projects at Kamalaya.

From top: Castelfalfi in Italy has partnered with Rakxa Wellness Spa in Thailand; Kamalaya’s Thai philosophies have been merged with bathing culture at Estelle Manor in the UK

“We want to give people a taste of what we offer and also ignite interest from new guests.”

It’s a concept that is expanding – recently Kamalaya held its debut Australian retreat experience at the renowned Aurora Spa & Bathhouse. The team is also exploring partnerships in Switzerland and Mauritius, with plans to return to Estelle Manor in 2026.

Strength through collaboration

Clinique La Prairie Holistic Health joined Four Seasons Hotel Megève in France for two week-long pop-ups last summer. It offered tailored signature treatments, incorporating Clinique La Prairie Holistic Health supplements with wellbeing masterclasses. Guests were also able to book personalised nutri-longevity assessments with a resident nutritionist.

“This collaboration allows us to strengthen Clinique La Prairie Holistic Health’s presence in the luxury wellness travel space,” says Sonia Spring, managing director of Holistic Health at Clinique La Prairie. “The initiative enabled guests to experience our nutraceutical science first-hand through tailored treatments, expert-led masterclasses and dedicated nutritional concepts, driving both product discovery and long-term interest.”

Following the success of initiative, the collaboration has been extended to include Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva.

Forging long-term links

A deeper form of residency sees wellness brands taking a permanent place at a hotel or resort spa, as Rakxa Wellness Spa from Thailand has done at Castelfalfi in Italy.

“This partnership reflects a shared belief in holistic wellbeing,” says Wsinee Sukjaroenkraisri, CEO, Rakxa Wellness Spa. “Rakxa’s wellness philosophy aligns seamlessly with Castelfalfi’s timeless landscapes and warm hospitality.”

Many famous fasting clinics across Europe run regular pop-ups in London to connect with their client bases in the city. The Original Mayr from Austria has recently collaborated with The HVN in Knightsbridge to offer a monthly clinic.

“This enhances our visibility and accessibility in the UK while allowing us to nurture our existing guests with regular personal care and check-ins,” says Gabriella Schnitzler, managing director, The Original Mayr. “It means guests can have pre-Mayr testing, consultations and medical assessments before coming to Austria.” www.kamalaya.com | www.estellemanor.com www.cliniquelaprairie.com | www.fourseasons.com www.rakxawellness.com | www.castelfalfi.com www.original-mayr.com | www.the-hvn.com https://auroraspa.com.au

The power of nature

We talk to eco-psychologist Amy Steadman about the transformative effects of nature therapy and how spas can embrace this in new programming

Trained to advanced levels in positive psychology and nature therapy, Amy Steadman leads retreats designed to help people find a deeper sense of presence, clarity and renewal. Steadman has led programmes in partnership with Wildsmith Skin, Heckfield Place, Belmond and Mandarin Oriental Mayfair, London as well as at Costa Navarino in Greece. She has also worked with corporate clients including Deloitte, TikTok and Amex.

We ask her why spas should incorporate nature into their programming.

What role does connection to nature play in boosting human health?

Research shows that time outdoors reduces stress, anxiety and overwhelm by calming the nervous system and giving the prefrontal cortex a chance to rest. Connecting with nature also boosts creativity, focus, vitality, mood and emotional resilience by reawakening our senses.

How can spas embrace nature connection in their wellness offering?

Design experiences that intentionally re-root guests in the natural world. Bring the outdoors in through natural light, fresh air flow, biophilic design and views of nature. Try creating immersive, sensory experiences: guided nature walks, outdoor treatments, barefoot grounding, forest bathing sessions, or rituals that encourage guests to pause, breathe and tune into their surroundings. Spas can also use soundscapes, seasonal therapies, botanical ingredients and circadian-aligned lighting.

What elements deliver the best results?

The most successful aspects are those that create meaningful, embodied connection with the natural world – something far deeper than simply being outdoors. With the addition of psychologically informed therapeutic techniques such as mindfulness, you can create real change. The result can be a profound sense of grounding, uplift and inner balance. www.amysteadman.com

A new experiential space has opened at leading European thermal destination, Thermen and Badewelt Sinsheim in Germany. The second chapter in White Mirror’s ‘Experience as Medicine’ series, Immersive

Horizon: Breathing Planet explores how sensory environments can heal, restore and reconnect.

Inviting guests to attune their bodies to the natural cycles of the planet, the experience includes a mirrored floor and chrome surfaces, to dissolve the boundary between body and space. Pulses of light and sound stimulate the senses and help to guide breathing to a rhythm shaped by NASA climate data.

Commissioned by Thermengruppe Josef Wund, the installation has been brought to life with artistry by Marshmallow Laser Feast, spatial design by atelier 522 and sensory innovation by White Mirror.

“Immersive Horizon: Breathing Planet demonstrates how environments designed with intention and science can act as catalysts for restoration, emotional resonance and long-term wellbeing,” says Ramy Elnagar, founder of White Mirror. “It offers guests the chance to slow down, regulate and connect with themselves and the planet.”

Intentional Spaces: The Power of Place

Alongside the installation, Thermengruppe Josef Wund, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, US and White Mirror have launched Intentional Spaces: The Power of Place, an initiative to advance neuroarchitecture – the science of how design affects the brain and wellbeing.

The project, which is led by International Arts + Mind Lab (IAM Lab) at Johns Hopkins University, will explore how sensory design can enhance emotional, cognitive and physical wellbeing.

“We’ve always believed spaces can do more than relax – they can heal, inspire and connect,” says Franz Hofstetter, chief innovation officer at Thermengruppe Josef Wund. “Through this partnership, we’re moving from intuition to evidence, exploring how sensory design can become a powerful, measurable tool for wellbeing.” www.wund.de | www.whitemirror.studio www.marshmallowlaserfeast.com | www.atelier522.com

Iris meditation pod

OpenSeed

A new meditation pod, designed to help people disconnect from stress and reconnect with themselves, OpenSeed’s Iris Pod offers a multisensory environment that guides users into deeper states of relaxation and awareness in under ten minutes.

Created by Fuseproject, a design and innovation company founded by Yves Behar, the Iris pod integrates vibroacoustic therapy through vibrational floor panels. It also features aromatherapy – each pod comes with three different essential oil sprays – as well as music and soundscapes. Audio-to-light technology offers visual cues for breathwork and visualisations, and there is an optional add-on of red-light therapy.

The pod has superior sound insulation, with a noise absorbing felt shell to create a peaceful cocoon. A built-in tablet is used to activate the immersive experiences and expert-led guided meditations, which help provide users with a way to ground themselves and achieve the alpha brain state, as indicated by relaxed yet wakeful brainwave activity.

Silent Snow ritual

TechnoAlpin Indoor and Myndstream

A ten-minute meditation and breathwork ritual, Silent Snow incorporates functional music by soundscape company Myndstream in the immersive ambiance of TechnoAlpin’s Snowroom. Snowroom guests can access the soundscapes on Myndstream’s online platform The Stream, with or without a voiceover.

“The future of wellness lies not just in the tools we provide, but the experiences they enable,” says Sara Brenninger, executive manager of TechnoAlpin Indoor. “Silent Snow really allows guests to focus on their connection to the moment.”

Myndstream has also developed Alpine Atmosphere, a second 30-minute multi-sensory soundscape for use in the Snowroom. “The immersive sonic journeys support a sense of calm, aid recovery and encourage overall balance, creating a unique multisensory holistic experience,” says Myndstream founder Freddie Moross. www.indoor.technoalpin.com | www.myndstream.com
