Haunt the park The Studios@5663 artists created an interesting challenge for themselves this Halloween season. Their plan: to convert an 11-studio building into an art-themed haunted attraction in just 13 days. “We’re going to be working nonstop these next two weeks for sure, but it’ll be worth it,” John Gascot told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. Once complete, the studios will temporarily appear as a haunted version of itself with a different theme/spook in each studio. “There’ll be a scary Mona Lisa, a living Goya painting, a Cubist nightmare, and I feel compelled to stick a Bob Ross in there as well,” Gascot told CL. The best night to visit is Sat. Oct. 23 during 4th Saturday Block pARTy, Pinellas Arts Village’s signature event. This way you can catch Pompei’s blacklight art show and the costume contest at Derek Donnelly’s Cove Gallery & Studio while you’re in the neighborhood. All Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, too. “There are too many layers of genius to unpack, really,” Mergeculture wrote in a press release for its latest show, “Straight from the Sewer,” which opens on Friday in downtown Tampa in conjunction with the monthly Bloom block party on Franklin Street. The show features work from a dozen artists from across the country—including Meow Wolf’s Nico Salazar and Birdcap, which painted one of the best murals in Tampa Bay—and was inspired by a conversation between Mergeculture Gallery’s co-curator Michelle Sawyer and Tampa producer Wally Rios. Also on the artist lineup are local favorites like past CL cover artist Peachmoon, 3LB God and Alejandro Algarin (aka Maff Bug), plus a music lineup that features some of the city’s best producers and rappers (Rios, who’s already done “Naruto” beat tapes, is releasing a Turtlesinspired one on Friday). As part of the Bloom party, nearby Magnanimous Brewing is releasing new beers (“Rahzar” and “Tokka” imperial sours with vanilla plus raspberry or blueberry). What Tampa BLM protester cases can teach us about the criminal justice system. By Justin Garcia

t’s been more than a year and three months since Jamie Bullock and Chukwudi Uche were arrested after Tampa Police Department (TPD) bicycle officers plowed into their peaceful march for Black lives on July 4 of last year. Nearly every single one of their days since the arrests were full of anxiety due to the charges they faced. But relief came this month when the state offered them an intervention deal. It’s a deal that they say the state could have offered to them a long time ago, which potentially leads to having no criminal record and all charges dropped if they complete the conditions of their intervention programs. However, the protesters feel wronged by the situation overall. They, along with legal experts, think that they should never have been arrested for expressing their first amendment rights. Although the case is now resolved, questions about the case stand out. How is it the protesters’ fault that TPD bicycle police plowed into them that day and enacted violence as they marched peacefully down the road? Why did the state stand by its claim for so long that the protesters assaulted officers while not having enough evidence to prove it in trial? Why do Bullock and Uche have to participate in intervention programs, when charges of unlawful assembly and battery on a law enforcement officer were dropped, thus negating their reasons for being arrested by police that day? These are all questions that should make us take a hard look at our criminal justice system, which is driven by police narratives, even though studies and polls have proven time and again that cops embrace deceit. Even though we know that evidence fabricated by cops has ruined innocent people’s lives in Tampa and across the country, there seems to be an addiction to blindly believing the police. Legal experts say that both the arrest and pursuit of charges against the two Tampa BLM protesters were uncalled for. “Jamie Bullock should have never been arrested for her involvement in the peaceful march for Black lives,” Kara Gross, Legislative Director and Senior Policy Counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida wrote to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay in an email.

“Individuals peacefully protesting need to be protected, not arrested,” wrote Gross. She continued that once arrested, the prosecutors (State Attorney Andrew Warren’s Office, SAO13) should have quickly and carefully reviewed the evidence and dropped the charges accordingly. “It should never have taken over a year for the unwarranted charges to be dropped,” Gross said. Virginia Hamrick, First Amendment Foundation Staff Attorney, had similar feelings about the case. “This case makes clear what we already knew: last summer’s protests were mostly peaceful here in

ight now, a group of rich guys wants a new baseball stadium. They’ve been doing everything from saying they’ll hang passive aggressive banners at Tropicana Field, making threats to split seasons with Canada or just move entirely, boycotting city council meetings, and by all appearances, getting cozy op-eds published in the local newspaper of record calling for them to get their way. These rich guys are, of course, Rays principal owner Stu Sternberg, and Tampa Bay Times mega-loaner Darryl Shaw, a local developer who would very much like the Rays’ new stadium to relocate to his giant development across the Bay. editorial board, which includes CEO Paul Tash, the paper somehow links the baseball team’s playoff loss to owner Sternberg not getting a stadium and leaving town. The title of the piece, “The Tampa Bay Rays loss hurts. Losing the Rays would hurt a lot more” isn’t exactly subtle with its intentions. The editorial kicks off by saying that the current team outperforms, despite having a punishingly low payroll (mostly because Sternberg chooses to keep it low), and that this “motley assortment” of players still wins, despite being “underappreciated,” which is shown by years of record low attendance. “Unfortunately, not that many fans show up to watch at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg,”

the piece continues. “For years, the team has ranked near the bottom in paid attendance. It’s hard to blame a good team with bad attendance from exploring new options for where to play home games.” Nevermind that MLB teams earn money in plenty of ways, like licencing, TV deals, etc., but it’s beyond ridiculous to pin any blame on anyone other than ownership. The Rays haven’t failed to win a World Series because of the fans, who, last we checked, aren’t on the payroll. They’ve failed because Sternberg won’t open his wallet to attract or keep star players, and his stinginess is most apparent when it comes to his new stadium. And this is where the Tampa Bay Times has a hard time talking about its friends. “As every fan knows by now,” writes the editorial, “the Rays have pitched splitting home games with Montreal as the most promising way for the team to maintain a presence in the

Tampa Bay area for the next 30 years. And the idea of a new outdoor stadium in or near Tampa’s Ybor City has the right people talking.” The “right people talking.” LOL. “Now is the time to build on that momentum,” it continues. “The Rays have to keep making their case to a skeptical public. They need to sell the community on why it should support building a new stadium for a part-time baseball team.” Clearly there’s a lot of “selling” going on in this column. Beside the fact that publicly subsidized stadiums are proverbial drains on local economies, the main problem here is that the Tampa Bay Times doesn’t mention that the prospect of a new stadium moving to Ybor directly benefits Shaw, who is also a member of FBN Partners. Back in 2017, FBN—which stands for “Florida’s Best Newspaper” and includes a slew continued on page 17

of other rich guys—loaned the Times a total of $15 million. Shaw is also the developer of the proposed “Gas Worx” project in Ybor. In a Times story from last July, Shaw stated that he does in fact want the Rays’ new stadium included in his Gas Worx development. “We very much hope that it will happen,” Shaw said. “I’ve always maintained that this development is for Ybor, and the Rays coming is not essential for the development to go forward. So the plan you see is probably what we will build — unless the Rays come, and then we would re-evaluate.” All this is to say, it is incredibly weird, and unethical, that the Times can’t muster up the strength to mention that the guy who loaned them millions of dollars also wants this stadium in Tampa. As David Uberti wrote for the Columbia Journalism Review, traditional newspapers and local television stations often have a hard time discussing new stadiums because the means are shared. “Local media are stakeholders in the growth machine within a city, so they benefit from the presence of a team,” said University of Alberta professor Daniel Mason to CJR. “If a franchise moves, the first person to lose his job is the sports reporter.” Cities are increasingly less and less interested in paying for stadiums, and selling Tampa on a new stadium that may be used less than half the time is an even tougher sell. As Twitter user, and frequent Sternberg critic, @stadiumshadow recently pointed out, the Times has already slammed the concept of funneling public dollars to private entities. In an April 2016 op-ed, the board blasted then Gov. Rick Scott’s plan to privatize Enterprise Florida, a now-public private economic development association. “Shelling out millions in public money to private corporations was never a novel, responsible or sustainable strategy for creating jobs in the Sunshine State,” said the board. Nevertheless, this didn’t stop the Times editorial board from publishing another piece just last week, titled “Good to see conversations heat up about Rays stadium,” where the paper yet again didn’t mention Shaw’s role with FBN Partners. “Tampa and Hillsborough county officials said last week the Rays were narrowing their stadium search to a site at the western edge of the historic Ybor City district. The property falls within the boundaries of the city’s Ybor City Community Redevelopment Area, which could mean millions in potential city-generated dollars for a new ballpark,” wrote the board. “As conceived, the stadium would be multi-use, hosting the Rays, spring training, the Rays-owned Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer franchise and traveling sports tournaments. To this day, we still don’t know all the details of the FBN loan, or who all the investors are. leads an investor group that bought the property in May, said in September that if all sides coalesce around the site 'we will work to bring their vision to life.'” Unsurprisingly, the Tampa Bay Times has actually been ripped for this very thing before. When Tash first announced that FBN Partners would loan millions to the struggling paper, he didn’t disclose that Shaw was one of the investors, or most of them at all for that matter. It wasn’t until reporter Noah Pransky found out about Shaw that Tash eventually admitted that he was part of the group, which we already knew included Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik. At the time, Tash claimed the paper wanted to respect the privacy of the investors. Since its inception, the FBN deal has drawn plenty of public scrutiny, even from the Poynter Institute, which owns the Times. “The value of transparency is a really good journalistic value,” Kelly McBride, then-vice president Poynter said in 2017, adding that, “The value of competitive information is a really good business value. The business has to work so that the overall journalism enterprise can work. Sometimes those values come directly in competition with each other.” McBride added that she thought keeping the names of FBN partners out of the news might be “keeping the investors happy.” “I think that some of those investors — and I don’t know this — but it’s possible that they would not have made the investment" if anonymity had not been promised, McBride added. To this day, we still don’t know all the details of the FBN loan, or who all the investors are. But talking about their friends seems to be a recurring problem for the Times editorial board.

In a November, 2019 op-ed, the board slammed then-president Trump’s opportunity zone tax loophole, which was by all definitions bad and deserved to be shat on. However, the Times only mentioned FBN Partners Darryl Shaw and Jeff Vinik’s opportunity zones at the very end of the piece, and essentially defended them by stating that while opportunity zones are often bad, Vinik’s and Shaw’s are good, actually. “Of course, some of the criticism of opportunity zones is easier from the outside looking in,” wrote the board. “The opportunity zone tied to Vinik’s Water Street development in downtown Tampa covers blocks that were vacant for years. (Vinik is part of FBN Partners, a group of local investors who have loaned $15 million to Times Publishing Co., which owns the Tampa Bay Times.) The Ybor City zone covers land that is dominated by warehouses and could be a site for a new Tampa Bay Rays stadium. In Pinellas County, there are 16 opportunity zones -- including the Tropicana Field site that is ripe for redevelopment.” “Ripe for redevelopment.” Please fire me out of a t-shirt cannon. The Times’ mental gymnastics for these projects is beyond impressive. The editorial board clearly wants this stadium to happen, and regardless of your feelings towards Water Street, it’s most certainly a grift. It’s pretty damn convenient that the project is next door to Vinik’s hockey stadium, and despite the purpose of opportunity zones—to spur growth in poor neighborhoods—Water Street is placed directly in Tampa’s wealthiest zip code.

Of course, these things may just be bad optics for the Times. Maybe this St. Petersburg-based newspaper just loves its home baseball team, and now wants Tampa taxpayers to hoof the bill for a new stadium. Fair enough. So if that’s the case, why not just slap a disclaimer on these pro-stadium op-eds? What is so hard about that? The Times reporters often do this when it comes to their award-winning reporting. Why doesn’t this journalistic standard apply to the editorial board? “For the last four years, we covered the FBN Partners without regard to their participation in the loan,” said Times Communications Director and editorial board member, Sherri Day, in an email to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “That will not change.” The Times told readers last August that the $21 million sale of its printing plant to hedge fund vultures Alden Global helped payback the “majority” of its loan to FBN Partners. Day confirmed this and stated that, “The FBN Partners loan has been paid in full. There is no outstanding balance.” However, this is still worth mentioning at the end of an op-ed. Paying off a loan doesn’t change the fact that it happened, that money exchanged hands—and purportedly saved the Times—and can still appear to influence coverage. So again, why not fully disclose this information every single time? Why allow the readers to imagine Darryl Shaw having dinner with Paul Tash at Bern’s Steak House and slamming his fists on the table demanding more op-eds? Why not just tell the public who’s in the bullpen?

lack and Latinx households are the most rent burdened in Tampa Bay, according to a new analysis from real estate website Zillow. The analysis says that Black renters in Tampa Bay typically spend 37.7% of their income on rent, compared to 35.6% for Latinx households and 33.1% for white households. The results of the analysis come at a time when Tampa is already on track to become more rent burdened than Los Angeles while Florida’s GOP aims to slash our state’s affordable housing fund. According to the analysis, the typical renter household in the Tampa metropolitan area is spending 33.8% of their income on rent. Typical asking prices for rentals were $1,876 as of this August, according to Zillow’s Observed Rent Index (ZORI). This represents all available rental units regardless of unit type or features (ie: number of bedrooms or bathrooms). That figure is up significantly, 24.7% higher than August of 2020 of last year. When housing costs surpass 30% of a household’s gross income, it is considered a burden, leaving less money for other necessary expenses. Rents have risen dramatically in 2021, and in August, the typical rent burden nationwide was 30.3%. Nationwide, white and Asian renters typically spend 28.6% and 26% of their incomes on rent, respectively, while Black people usually spend 34% of their income and Latinx renters spend 32.1%, according to Zillow. Orlando is the least affordable market for

Latinx households, costing 42% of their income. Even so, that 42% burden is still lower than what Black households spend in San Diego, Sacramento and San Francisco. The pandemic has disproportionately impacted households with lower incomes, renters, and people of color. Latinx and Black households are more likely than white households to report a job loss, while renters reported loss of income or a job more commonly than homeowners. This research is the latest by Zillow showing the impacts of housing inequality. The group says that adding housing supply— specifically more diverse, affordable and denser housing options— will help to slow worsening housing affordability problems. According to Zillow, money for rent represented 32.8% of Tampa Bay renters’ income in June 2021. That figure is forecast to rise to 34.3% by December. If this occurs, Tampa Bay renters will be spending more of their income on rent than their counterparts in Los Angeles, Anaheim and Long Beach. Miami-Dade’s lack of affordability comes in at the highest in the country, with a current rate of 39.4% and an expected 40.3% of a resident’s income going to rent predicted by December. The pandemic’s impact was felt more intensely by renters, who were more likely to report a loss of income and or job loss than homeowners, according to another Zillow survey, and homeowners typically earn more than renters do.

he Cross-Bay Ferry is returning to service in Tampa Bay on Oct. 21, marking its fifth season of fun, convenient, cost-efficient travel across the bay. The ferry returns with an extended season that includes an additional month of service, making it available until May 22. Later evening departures will also be available, with final departure times as late as 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. “Thanks to a great partnership between four local governments, one of the most exciting and reliable ways to travel across Tampa Bay is back,” said Matt Miller, president of HMS Ferries in a press release. “The Cross-Bay Ferry offers an incredibly accessible and affordable transportation option between two of the hottest spots in downtown Tampa and downtown St. Pete. What’s more, passengers get treated to some amazing views of the bay and both cities.” The ferry is a regional collaboration between Hillsborough County, Pinellas County, the City of Tampa, and the City of St. Petersburg. Beginning this year, Hillsborough County became the lead governmental sponsor, taking the reins from the City of St. Petersburg. “Hillsborough County is proud to take the lead on continuing this unique regional partnership,” said Hillsborough County Commissioner Pat Kemp. “We are glad to be expanding this popular ferry service while also laying the foundation for permanent ferry service in Tampa Bay. Together, we are providing residents and visitors with a fast, fun and affordable way to travel between our communities.” This year, the ferry will operate from the same terminal locations as last season. In Tampa, it will

depart from the dock at the Tampa Convention Center, and in St. Petersburg from the dock at North Straub Park, near the Vinoy Marina. First departures from St. Petersburg will start at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 11 a.m. on Sundays. Final departures from Tampa will be at 10:45 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 7:30 p.m. on Sundays. The ferry does not run on Mondays and Tuesdays. The ferry vessel is a twin-hull aluminum catamaran that can carry a maximum of 149 guests at an average speed of 30 mph and has a fullservice bar with basic food service. Passengers may bring up to two pieces of luggage and one small personal item at no extra charge, and they may also bring bikes on board. Customer surveys will also be taken regularly to improve service and gain better insight into how future permanent ferry service can be achieved and structured. Ticket prices for adults will be the same as last season: $10 one-way and $20 roundtrip for adults; $8 one-way and $16 roundtrip for seniors (age 65 and over), youths (ages 5 to 18), members of the military (active or retired), and college students; and free service for children age 4 and under. This year the Cross-Bay Ferry will also offer people who use a wheelchair a discounted rate of $5 one-way and $10 roundtrip. On filth and popularism The problem with avoiding the culture war.

ith apologies for starting consecutive columns in North Carolina, let me tell you a story about the state’s first Black lieutenant governor, Mark Robinson. He’s a Republican religious fundamentalist with a long history of anti-LGBTQ social media posts who rose to fame after a pro-gun speech went viral. He’s spent his time in office targeting “liberal indoctrination” in schools: critical race theory, teachers using CNN, that sort of thing. He’ll almost certainly be the Republican Party’s candidate for governor in 2024. Earlier this month, video surfaced of Robinson speaking at a religious event in June. He said a lot of interesting stuff about how schools should force students to pray, how churches should exert more influence over politics, how “godless people” want to defund police, and how non-Christians have “no wisdom.” But the line that made news was this: “There’s no reason anybody anywhere in America should be telling any child about transgenderism, homosexuality, any of that filth. And yes, I called it filth, and if you don’t like that I called it filth, come see me and I’ll explain it to you.” After Robinson received—perhaps welcomed is a better word—a flurry of condemnations from the media, liberals, and even the White House, he posted a video to Facebook in which he said he “will not back down,” claimed he’d been “viciously attacked,” then argued he hadn’t really called LGBTQ folks “filth.” “However,” he said, “the idea that our children should be taught about concepts of transgenderism and be exposed to sexually explicit materials in the classroom is abhorrent.” Consider those hairs split. I thought of this episode while considering David Shor, an ex-Obama wunderkind who briefly dominated lefty political discourse on Twitter earlier this month. (Bear with me.) Shor, according to an Ezra Klein essay in The New York Times, says Democrats have become a well-educated, urban party in a countermajoritarian system that favors rural states, and they’re about to run into an electoral buzzsaw. “Educational polarization has made the Senate even more biased against Democrats than it was, and the decline in ticket splitting has made it harder for individual Democratic candidates to run ahead of their party,” Klein

explains. Shor’s diagnosis is hard to argue. His prescription, called popularism, is more contentious. To stay viable, he says, Democrats need to win in states that lean Republican. To win those states, they need to win swing voters. To win those swing voters, they should only talk about policies those voters like and scrupulously avoid anything that might turn them off—for example, issues like race and immigration. In North Carolina—a red-leaning state where Democrats consistently lose by narrow margins—longtime Democratic operative Thomas Mills argues that Shor is correct: “[Democrats] cannot win in a state like North Carolina if the perception among less engaged voters is that Democrats are more of a protest movement than political party.” But North Carolina also points out a flaw in Shor’s case: Democrats don’t control what other people talk about. Mark Robinson wants the culture war front and center: critical race theory, “transgenderism,” guns, school prayer, you name it. The more controversy, the better. Wedge issues are his path to power. Are Democrats supposed to ignore him—or the fact that no prominent Republican rebuked him? Beyond alienating a core group of supporters, would that win a single vote? Also writing in the Times, Jamelle Bouie argues that avoiding wedge issues won’t suffice. To actually pick up swing voters drawn to Republican rhetoric, they’d have to adopt the Third Way/Bill Clinton strategy of the 1990s: “[Clinton] spoke about the party’s most popular policies while also taking every opportunity to show that he was not, and would not be, beholden to the interests of Black Americans.” Just imagine attempting this sort of triangulation in Ohio, where Republicans Josh Mandel and J.D. Vance are trying to out-clown each other in the U.S. Senate primary. For example: Mandel has called for a “JudeoChristian revolution” and compared Afghan refugees to “alligators” and vaccine mandates to the Holocaust; Vance says the “Democrat Party” is “a party of childless people” who shouldn’t be allowed to vote, and has defended a Nazi who was booted from Twitter. The more outlandish the rhetoric, the harder it is for economic plans to break through the

But with opponents like these, I suspect there’s not much for Democrats to do but act sane; if swing voters aren’t appalled by what they’re hearing, they weren’t winnable anyway. If Shor’s approach succeeds, Democrats would likely hold the Senate thanks to candidates who feel the need to show their independence from their party. If you want to see how that would work, look no further than Joe Manchin, D-Coal, who is now demanding that his party means-test the popular child tax credit and remove the most important climate change provision in the reconciliation bill. Or Kyrsten Sinema, D-Pharma, who opposes allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices. In other words, it probably won’t be great for either political messaging or policy outcomes. For no clear reason beyond vagaries about inflation and deficits, Sinema and Manchin are making President Biden’s signature legislation less

effective and harder to sell. Now imagine a Senate Democratic caucus with two or three more Manchins in it. Is that better than a Senate run by Mitch McConnell? If you’re a Democrat, obviously. But progressives will have to significantly lower their expectations for what a Democratic Senate can accomplish. The thing is, I don’t think Shor’s wrong. The anti-democratic anachronisms baked into the Constitution are looming ever larger, the Senate especially. Had Democrats quickly made Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico states this year, perhaps they could bet on sweeping the four new seats. But they didn’t, and now they’re staring down a hellish Senate map in 2022—and begging Manchin and Sinema to let them show something for their time in power. Tampa Bay-based docuseries draws criticism over lack of diversity. By Aaliyah Selene Pasols

She tells CL that the casting choice was disappointing but having watched reality shows in the past, she wasn’t shocked by it either.

been friends since at least 2019. Of the 12 women in the promo photo for “Tampa Baes,” half of them are dating each other, according to their Instagram pages. There is no doubt that these entanglements will cause the necessary drama for a reality show. And it will most likely make for great television, just as “The Real L Word” did. According to the LA Times, “The Real L Word” averaged “more than a million viewers in its first two seasons” and was Showtime’s “top-performing unscripted show in prime time.” Still, despite its popularity, “The Real L Word” wasn’t without its own controversies. Similar to “Tampa Baes,” it was criticized for its lack of diversity in both skin tone and gender expression. The aforementioned EuroTrilll, who now lives in Brooklyn, identifies as a nonbinary lesbian. She says the lack of studs in the show’s cast was another red flag for her. “Studs are a huge part of Tampa culture,” EuroTrilll says. “There are so many studs that live freely in their expression and people are inspired by that—and [to not include them], it’s just not an accurate depiction of Tampa at all.”

Despite the advancement, queer people of color have historically not seen the same representation as their white counterparts. So much so that New York Times’ Jamal Jordan sought to create more imagery of Black queer couples’ romance back in 2018. He photographed these couples in New York City, stating in the article that he couldn’t “think of a single high-profile example of a loving relationship between two queer black people.” “I’ve been wondering, when is it gonna be time for more Black representation when it comes to mainstream lesbian and LGBT media? I feel like Black women are at the bottom of the hierarchy [when it comes to media]. White lesbians, white gay men, Black gay men—it’s like everybody’s above us because we’re not really on TV being represented or being represented correctly. And if we are, we often have smaller side roles,” EuroTrilll says. Eric Deggans is a TV critic for NPR and the author of “Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation”. He couldn’t provide any commentary on “Tampa Baes “specifically and highly suggests that everyone should give shows a watch first before critiquing them. However, having reviewed the media for over 15 years, Deggans has certainly witnessed this lack of diversity on screen when it comes to the queer community. “There was a show in the early 2000s called ‘Queer as Folk’ on Showtime that was about gay men in Pittsburgh and they were almost all white. That’s something that critics like me used to talk about a lot at that time, that the vision of gayness on television was often male, white, and middle class,” Deggans tells CL. “But we’ve come a long way since then on television,” he adds. “We’re in a better space now than we were 10 or 15 years ago. In recent years there have been a lot of shows that are not white or middle class because there have been objections raised again and again that TV shows need to feature a wider palate and do a better job of showing different kinds of characters.” Following the pandemic, this lack of diversity in queer shows has seemed to improve, as Deggans said. GLAAD, an LGBTQ+ media advocacy group, released its annual “Where We Are on TV” report back in January of this year. The organization has been tracking LGBTQ+ representation in the media for 25 years, and found that now is the first time that more queer people of color have been more prominent on-screen than their white counterparts. Queer people of color made up 53% of LGBTQ+ regular and recurring characters on broadcast series, 52% on cable shows,

and 47% on streaming platform originals, according to GLAAD’s report. White room This is great progress for the BIPOC queer community but there is still much more work to be done until there is adequate, accurate representation—and perhaps that should start with those behind the camera and in the writers’ rooms. “In the end, mostly white people run TV, film, and the media, and so it’s constantly a struggle to get the people who control the industry to be more inclusive in their vision or be more inclusive in how they’re depicting different kinds of people,” Deggans says. Indeed, all five of the executive producers of “Tampa Baes,” mentioned in the Amazon Studios press release, appear to be white. Melissa Bidwell, who is described as the showrunner in the same release, couldn’t be reached for comment on the show’s controversy. PR for Amazon Studios told CL that Bidwell wouldn’t be available for interviews at this time. Presented with a list of questions regarding criticisms of the “Tampa Baes” pre-existing cast and how decision makers landed on them for the show, PR also declined to comment on the record. According to a 2017 “Race in the Writers’ Room” study by Darnell Hunt, Dean of Social Sciences at UCLA, nearly two-thirds (65.4%) of all shows had no Black writers in the writers’ rooms. More shocking: more than 90% of shows were led by white showrunners. When these types of stark disparities are not challenged, it becomes difficult for Black stories to be told properly or to be told at all. Diversity and inclusion in the writers’ rooms as well as the cast is important because representation is important. There have been many studies done on the positive psychological effects of accurate representation across all races, sexualities, and gender expressions. “I feel that seeing someone that is like you, that presents in the way that you present or presents in the way that you in your mind see yourself, means so much,” says 19-year-old Uniekue (whose legal name is Daniel Akomolafe) of Atlanta, Georgia. They are Black and identify as genderfluid. Uniekue recounts a “life-changing” moment when they saw a picture of Billy Porter wearing an androgynous outfit. “He was wearing a beautiful suit that was then cut into a mermaid-style gown and I saw that and I was like, ‘I feel so deeply connected to whatever is going on here.’ And that was part of how I realized I was genderfluid. Seeing that for the first time was revolutionary for me. The

Uniekue made a Tik Tok about the “Tampa Baes” controversy when the cast photo was first released, expressing their opinion on it. It went viral, receiving over 190K views and 62K likes— but not everyone was agreeing with them. “When I made the video and it started doing numbers on queer Tik Tok, the way in which I was attacked by white queer people...I was like, ‘Oh, y’all was not happy to hear me say that!’” Uniekue says. “When you have a presence online you open yourself up to criticism... but I was berated in the comment section. I’ve dealt with a lot of white fragility in my life so it wasn’t that serious but I was like, ‘Okay so I was definitely right.’”

People like Uniekue will continue to be loud about diverse representation in the media because it’s still a prevalent issue today. And when the positive effects of representation done right are so great, it’s something worth speaking up about. It allows young queer people to have a role model to look up to or to have a reference point when it comes to their journey toward selfdiscovery and identity. But perhaps overall, it allows them to look positively toward the future. “One of the things I always say is that TV and film teach us how to dream,” Deggans says. “It often teaches people what might be possible for them when the situation that they’re in is limited. You can turn on the TV and see someone who might be a little bit like you doing something you could never imagine being possible because of where you’re personally at or what’s physically around you.”

Catching up with Todd Rundgren’s legendary sideman. By Gabe Echazabal

It had been a while since you’d put out a record of your own. Tell me a little bit about how this one came about and the inspiration for it. Well, first of all, I, for whatever reason, and I’m not entirely sure why nor do I particularly care to know why, I don’t put out solo albums out every year-and-a-half or two years. It’s usually very far and few between. So, my first album came out in 1980-1981. I didn’t do another record after that until I put a little cassette out in the early-‘90s with a friend of mine, [guitarist] Earl Slick, who was trying to start a record label at the time. And then I didn’t do another solo record until 2004. I was completely inundated with work between Todd Rundgren, and mostly with Meat Loaf, actually, at that time. Then something happened in 2004 where I kind of got a little bit more of a bug to work on more on my solo material and I put out a record in 2004 and I did some shows behind it.

I was having a wonderful time doing that even though I didn’t really have a band; I did it all by myself. And then I put another record out around 2008. In 2010 and I was like “I’m really enjoying the solo world and the solo work.” So, I sat down to write another solo record and that one came out in June 2014. I was thoroughly enjoying myself. I’d finished

Phil produced this whole record and I think that’s another reason why it kind of resonates with a lot of people because,

odd Rundgren has worked with a lot of musicians…for an exceptionally long time. The soon-to-be inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has a massive, substantial musical catalog that ranges from his time with garage rockers The Nazz, his array of solo recordings and his many records with Utopia, the band which morphed from prog rocker kingpin to fullon power pop pioneer. Longtime Utopia bassist, songwriter, and co-vocalist Kasim Sulton is one of Todd’s most enduring musical collaborators. The multi-talented artist was only in his 20s when recruited for membership in Utopia in the mid-’70s and has continued to often work alongside Rundgren ever since. Not one to sit idly, Sulton has also worked extensively with artists like Meat Loaf, Blue Öyster Cult, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and Scandal throughout his career. Yet, amid his busy schedule, he’s found time to release a brand-new solo album, Kasim 2021, that might just be the finest and most cohesive of his own catalog. Busy touring in support of that album as well as part of Rundgren’s band on his current, ambitious tour that finds him setting up two-night residencies in each of the scheduled cities, somehow, Sulton found the time to chat with me about his newest release, his work with Rundgren and about life on the road. your cover of Nick Lowe’s “(What’s So Funny ‘bout) Peace, Love and Understanding” which also contains another really positive uplifting message. Was that intentional to open the album on that note and close it that way, too? Yes, and no. We always wanted to end the record with “Peace, Love and Understanding.” It seemed like a good closer for the record as opposed to something that was maybe a little bit more downtempo or a little bit more subdued. uh, not necessarily uptempo, but not downtempo. We don’t want another ballad; we don’t want another midtempo song. We want something that’s like kind of right in between and a positive message and so, “More Love” was, like I said, the last song written for the record, and that’s why it was my choice for the first single, because I thought that as songs go, it was indicative of what, the rest of the record was like. It didn’t lean in any particular direction. And I felt that was the best thing for the record; to have that as the song that people might gravitate towards, you know. Speaking of touring, you’ve played with so many people: Meat Loaf, and I know you did some time with Blue Öyster Cult, Joan Jett, and of course with Todd and Utopia. Do you ever get to the point where you have to get yourself into the zone and think “Where am I? What song am I playing?” It’s got to be so much to remember for you all the time when you play with so many different artists like that. You know, it’s funny that you should mention that because I just started a Todd tour just about two weeks ago. And I was pulling my hair out going into it because I had been working on my record and I have a couple of livestreams that I had, and my time was completely taken up doing my solo stuff and working on my record. And so, I was like, biting my nails at the last minute was like “Ah, geez, I gotta go over all this Todd stuff! I gotta, you know, I have to learn like, 30 songs. I mean, some of them I know, some of them I don’t, some of them I can remember, but some of them, I was thinking, “I’ve completely forgotten how that one goes.” Anyway, long story short, I sat down to play some of the stuff, and I was pleasantly surprised that I knew everything. I remembered everything like it was yesterday.

You add so much to Todd’s sound, music, and presentation through your work with Utopia and through his solo stuff. You’re a huge part of that and I know that you sing lead vocals on a lot of Utopia songs throughout all those albums. While you’re on this current tour with Todd, will you be singing lead vocals on any of the songs that will be played? It depends on what night you come. If you come on a night where we are playing the second side of A Wizard, A True Star, because this particular tour is in two parts, So the first part is The Individualist, it’s more or less Todd’s solo material, all the popular stuff. Everything that people expect him to play and want him to play. So, we do the first half of the show like that. Second half of the show is one side of A Wizard, A True Star or the other side of A Wizard, a True Star. And I sing one song because Todd has a costume change, so I was delegated a song to sing and that’s the song that I sing. One last question: I know fans have been waiting for this for a long time, but any thoughts regarding Todd finally getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Do you think that it’s long overdue? Do you think it’s insignificant? Any thoughts on that? You know, I don’t think it’s insignificant. I think it’s really cool, whether or not Todd subscribes to that particular organization has nothing to do with me or my thoughts about it. I think that it’s great when you are recognized by a group of your peers and it’s a little pat on the back for the work that you’ve done and the lives that you’ve touched with your music. And so, I think it’s great. I really do. And I think that as much as Todd might kind of say “eh” about it, the only reason why he’s happy about it is for the fans. I can’t help but think that on some level, he’s like, you know, it’s not so much vindication as it is acknowledgment, and it’s always nice to be acknowledged.

Greg Graffin didn’t even squeeze in shows during the soft restart at the beginning of 2020. But that’s not to say that the band behind “21st Century (Digital Boy)” didn’t have plans to hit the road. Chicago’s own Alkaline Trio—fronted by Matt Skiba who now also plays in Blink-182—was planning to hit the road in support of new music recorded right before everything went to hell (three songs were released last March as ‘EP’). Young, a Tampa native, recently released the single “Werk”, featuring Trina, so go see her before she blows up. “Owners Box” tickets, for 15 people and five bottles, are available for $3,450—flex it, if you got it. (Whiskey North, Tampa) C The Sol Exhibit: Cord w/J’Nelle/Shelby Sol Hooch and Hive is easily one of the top three best rooms for sound, so it should perform well when a new collective with familiar faces—Free Your Rhyme, LLC, driven by singer-songwriter Shelby Sol and Tampa rapper Jinx—stages its first “Sol Exhibit” concert where featured performers will not only play, but share the stories behind the music, all backed by one hell of a house band, Sol Idarity, anchored in part by Tampa bass genius Rugawd. A member of Sol Idarity Cord McLean steps out to centerstage for this bill along with, singer and songwriter J’Nelle and Sol herself (who’s also playing with Acme Jazz Garage on Sunday). One of the most prominent and longest-running preFest shows in the Sunshine State happens in the Bay area thanks, in no small part, to the efforts of local punk scene staple Chewy Hemphill who’s once again teaming up with St. Pete tattoo shop Lucky You to not only help bands get extra shows (it’s expensive to bring a tour to Florida!), but also let local fans without reliable transportation or time off work get in on the action. For two days, Hemphill and an army of volunteers will welcome nearly two dozen Fest-destined from across the world (seriously, Lemmiwinks is from Panama) including punk heavyweights like MakeWar, Tiltwheel, The Eradicator, Mikey Erg, plus local favorites (City Mouse, Wolf-Face, Wreath and a reunion from uke-driven punk band Community Couch). C Acme Jazz Garage Acme Jazz Garage (AJG) is traditionally a four-piece made up of guitarist Matt Swenson, pianist/keyboardist Bryan Lewis and bassist Philip Booth and rotating selection of drummers. But for this matinee, the band will feature saxophonist Rick Runion, second keyboardist Jody Marsh, drummer Dave Rudolph and guest singer Shelby Sol (Sol is also on a killer Saturday bill at Hooch and Hive in Tampa). Sharkskin, the second full-length release from Acme Jazz Garage following the band’s self-titled 2016 debut, is a repertoire of original compositions and arrangements. Dear Oracle, the past two years have been a lot. Both my husband and I have been working from home, and after 19 months of duel Zoom meetings, conference calls, and exhausting stretches, my house doesn’t exactly feel like a tranquil, relaxing space. We’ve decided to start trying for a baby (yay!), but I would really like to have a tranquil home for when the baby arrives. So besides painting and making everything smell like lavender, how can I create a calm, harmonious home?— Longing for Calm Quarters Cards: The Empress, Ace of Wands, The Tower, The Hermit reversed Dear Calm Quarters, first, I will not knock paint colors. I’m not what you would call a “color-witch,” but every room in my house was “depression grey” when I moved in, and now I got a kitchen the color of mint ice cream and a bedroom that looks like the bottom of the sea, and it’s lovely. So if you feel like painting an accent wall or feathering your nest with a lavender candle, have at. However, I don’t think it will help because with three Major Arcana, there are much bigger things at play, and paint color can’t fix that. It’s exciting that you and your husband are trying for a baby! The Ace of Wands is an excellent card for that; it’s all about new beginnings and creation—which is fitting if you’re creating a new life!

It’s a time of great potential and very exciting! It is, of course, followed by The Tower, which is absolute chaos and a complete upending of life as you know it… which is about par for the course when a couple welcomes their very first baby into their lives. As someone who’s only a cosmic-aunt to a variety of friends' babies, I don’t know the exact ins and outs of babies. Still, from what I gathered, everyone will be very sleepy for at least four months, you’ll need way more diapers than you think, and having a freezer full of meals is clutch. (No shame in Stouffer's!) It will be exhausting and exciting and wonderful and overwhelming all at once—an enjoyable chaos. Now, while I don’t think you’ll have a Kinfolk calm house with a newborn baby in it, I do believe The Empress and The Hermit are going to help you find a balance. The Empress is a strong feminine card, full of both compassion and not-taking-any-shit. Now is the time to start setting up some firm boundaries with work. You’re going to have to be protective of your time, and that might mean saying no to things (if you’re able to.) The earlier you set those boundaries, the easier they’ll be to hold when you’re sleep-deprived. The Hermit is also an important card here. It’s both a card of inner wisdom and outer guidance. You might know in your gut what you need, and

you might need to ask for help. Do you have any friends who are parents? Do you have any family that might be able to help? Also, importantly, do you know any other working moms? Can you talk to them about how they handle striking a balance? But don’t ignore your inner wisdom. Once you’re a mother, people will just start telling you things you should and shouldn’t be doing. So trust your inner Hermit and call upon that Empress energy to deal with the shouldheads. Best of luck!

It’s not terrible if you quit. You have the Ace of Wands, which is an exciting energy of new beginnings, and then the Eight of Wands, which is exhausting but manageable. However, you do have a reversed Queen of Swords, which can mean a sharp inner critic. It’s not the easiest choice. However, if you stay, things can’t remain status quo. With the Magician reversed, I don’t think you’re appreciating your own power. You’re probably very good at your job, and that’s hard to come by. You have leverage. The Ace of Swords is a card of intelligence and leadership. It’s time for you to put yourself in the running to run things. I don’t know if there’s a ladder at your job to climb or if it means advocating for more projects, but whatever you need to do to step into your full power, you should do it because the outcome is a lot more harmonious. The Six of Wands is a celebration, and while it’s not going to happen quickly, it is a promising future. I know it might not be as exciting as starting something new, but I think there are enough good things at your job that you aren’t rushing out the door. It also can feel daunting to advocate for yourself, but really take a long hard look at your abilities. Then look at people around you. Are you better than middle management? I noticed them about two months ago (near my b-hole) and went to the gyno today and had them treated. My question is, do I need to tell my boyfriend? We’ve been dating for about five months, and we don’t use protection because I have an IUD. More background info: My BF hasn’t gone down on me. He wants to, but I’m very subby and it’s hard for me to get off that way, so I’ve been putting him off. And now that I want him to try, I have warts. I don’t know if he’s seen them. Maybe? We haven’t had sex from behind in months and I think that may be why. Maybe he saw them before I did and stopped wanting to have sex in that position? He did want to fuck me from behind a couple of days ago, but I said no because I was embarrassed. Do I need to tell him I have HPV/ genital warts? “Yes, WARTS should disclose this to her partner,” said Dr. Ina Park, a professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California San Francisco. “Hopefully he will be calm and supportive about it, and it won’t be a big deal for the two of them.” What you’re facing, WARTS, is what I’ve long described as a “one thing/everything” disclosure scenario. Meaning, you’ll be telling your boyfriend one thing he needs to know about you when you make this disclosure—that you have a very common and easily transmissible STI— but his reaction will tell everything you need to know about him. If he isn’t calm and supportive out of the gate, WARTS, or can’t pivot to calm and supportive quickly, you’ll know he’s not anyone you want in your bed or up your butt. “And while I usually don’t try to pinpoint where HPV comes from in terms of ‘blaming’ a specific partner,” said Dr. Park, “if the boyfriend does freak out, I would make this next point: Given that the warts showed up for the first time so soon after starting this new relationship, it’s likely that WARTS’ current partner gave her the HPV that’s causing these warts.” Dr. Park, who is also an STI prevention consultant to the Centers for Disease Control (and so knows what the fuck she’s talking about), points out that the strains of HPV most likely to cause genital warts—types 6 and 11, for those keeping score—will typically start showing symptoms a few months after someone starts sleeping with a new partner who has undisclosed or undiagnosed HPV. “In some cases, it can be longer, and some folks won’t manifest warts for two years

Now there’s a safe and effective HPV vaccine—a vaccine that protects people against HPV-related cervical cancers, penile cancers, rectal cancers, and throat cancers— and ideally people should get their children vaccinated against HPV before they’re sexually active. But even sexually active adults up to age 45, including adults who’ve already had HPV, can benefit from getting the HPV vaccine. “Since we know that WARTS’ immune system didn’t clear HPV very easily—because she had warts—it’s a great idea for her to get the HPV vaccine,” said Dr. Park. “It will protect her from the strains of HPV that she hasn’t already been exposed to, including other strains that cause warts and cancer. And WARTS should bear in mind that it often takes multiple treatments to get rid of warts.
