Hoppy days For Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, Dr. Thomas Hallock is one-half of a columnist duo that invites readers to explore the Bay area’s “City Wilds,” and while the author and professor at University of South Florida’s St. Pete campus is a rock star in my eyes, his new book of essays and poems is a reminder that even our brilliant friends struggle. Juxtaposed to its title, “Happy Neighborhood” is built around challenges Hallock faces as a father, spouse and son. Inside, he grapples with the political pitfalls of loving Florida, breaking cycles in parenthood, and infidelity, but also the thoughts that run through someone’s head while cooking and walking the dog around St. Pete. Orange you glad Tampa’s gone-but-not-forgotten downtown criterium bicycle race was one of the most exciting sporting events in the Bay area, and St. Pete hosts a crit of its own this weekend. For the uninitiated, a criterium is a circuit, street race consisting of several laps on a loop that can be anywhere from about a quarter-mile to about six smiles. Crit bikes are different from traditional road race bikes seen in a race like the Tour de France in that they’re built to take extremely sharp turns and accelerate at fast paces. St. Pete’s Orange Belt criterium will be in the Edge District between 11th and 15th Streets and broken down into amateur and pro categories. Let the sun shine in It’s common knowledge that resistance, protests and other organizing efforts from Black Americans pressured the U.S. government into passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but Florida’s vital role in these movements is sometimes overlooked. One local museum is changing that. “Civil Rights in the Sunshine State” is on display at the St. Petersburg Museum of History until Halloween, and it’s one of the best places to learn about the contributions of Black St. Petians and Tampeños to the country’s Civil Rights movement. The exhibit features over 100 photographs, poster boards and artifacts that explain how the Civil Rights movement unfolded in Florida 60-something years ago, and details important actions like wade-ins at Spa Beach and Spa Pool, sit-ins at lunch counters on Central Avenue, and landmark lawsuits against the St. Petersburg Police Department. It covers the timeline from the Rosewood Massacre of 1923 to Dr. Martin Luther King’s 1964 arrest in St. Augustine. The exhibit—which is borrowed from the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee—was supposed to go back to its permanent home last month, but its run was extended due to popular demand, according to ILovetheBurg. ‘Civil Rights in the Sunshine State.’ On display until Tuesday, Oct. 31. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sunday. $9-$15. It’s alive! If gory horror movies aren’t your thing, then maybe get your dose of spooky content from Jobsite Theater. Adapted by Nick Dear from the 1818 novel by Mary Shelley, Jobsite hosts three weeks of Frankenstein performances this October and November. Described as a “disturbing” classic tale that explores themes of “scientific responsibility, neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil,” Frankenstein follows the story of a lab-created monster who is not the perfect creature the scientist was determined to make, and eventually encounters cruelty from both his creator and the outside world. Although the original Frankenstein novel is over 200 years old, the local rendition of this classic story is a haunting performance whether you’re a Halloween lover or just a fan of poignant dramas in general. Lawsuits against New Port Richey keep coming. By Arielle Stevenson For Jones, the fight for justice goes well beyond his lawsuit. His family has called New Port Richey home for almost a century. More recently, he’s gone toe-to-toe at NPR city hall with newly-elected Mayor Alfred “Chopper” Davis. The new mayor reportedly won the race by only 13 votes. Davis’ predecessor, Rob Marlowe, said he wished people seeking public records would just “go away.” Davis previously served on the city council for nine years before being term-limited in 2022. He won that seat by a slight margin of nine votes in 2013. On Sept. 18, Davis had NPR police officers escort Jones out of a budget meeting for “interrupting.” Jones told CL that one of the officers

This month, during a special budget workshop, Davis argued with Jones at the dias again. This time, Davis told Jones to keep his comments to the business item. Jones asked, as were others in the public, about unlisted miscellaneous spending by City Manager Debbie Manns. “How many law firms is the city manager paying for without coming to the public?” Jones asked.

Wojciechowski, who is Jewish, says she didn’t know about the search in advance, and claims the city brought a locksmith to break into her home because no one was there. The video also shows officers rifling through her personal belongings. “I never thought something so insignificant could give you legitimate post traumatic stress disorder,” Wojciechowski told CL. “There are days where I’m just driving down the road, and I’m thinking about everything and start to go through the stages of grief.” She moved to New Port Richey from New York, and purchased a property in hopes of starting a health center. Ultimately, Wojciechowski left New Port Richey as a result of what she describes as repeated harassment, stalking, and the chilling of her First Amendment rights. “I had to uproot my life and go to an entirely different state and start my life over,” Wojciechowski said. “It put us back financially, and put a strain on my relationship, work, life, everything.” Her attorney, Kevin K. Ross-Andino, is also representing Faith in Florida organizer Marlowe Jones, who was falsely arrested and accused of felony battery on law enforcement. Jones was acquitted by a jury trial on May 5, 2022. The lawsuit was filed Aug. 21 in Florida’s Middle District court, and also names New Port Richey city attorney Timothy Driscoll and Charles Morgan, the code enforcement manager that oversaw the inspection. According to public records, Morgan spied on her water use levels to see when she was home, and ran her license plate through a police scanner 22 times between November 2021 and May 2022. From there, she says cases would get dismissed just before going to court, only to be replaced with new alleged violations. The cycle continued. The criminal charges against Wojciechowski were ultimately dropped after she got a criminal attorney to represent her. “Nothing happened,” Wojciechowski said. “It was all for nothing.” On March 13, 2022, Driscoll was originally arrested and charged with a DUI and improper turn/wrong lane/too wide. In body camera footage obtained by CL, Driscoll failed a sobriety test after driving another car off the road in St. Pete. Ultimately, Driscoll pleaded guilty to the lesser charge for an improper turn. continued on page 15

fter the City of New Port Richey failed twice to dismiss it, the lawsuit by activist Marlowe Jones is headed to trial on Nov. 4, 2024. The lawsuit alleges civil rights violations after NPR police unlawfully arrested and charged Jones with felony battery on a law enforcement officer in 2020. “We’re happy this case is moving forward,” Jones, who works as lead organizer for Faith in Florida, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay recently on the phone. “This thing is going full speed ahead.” The state’s case relied on false testimony from a now-former cop, and a jury trial acquitted Jones on May 5, 2022. Jones and his attorney, Kevin K. Ross-Andino, filed a civil rights lawsuit against NPR on March 31. The city’s legal team has repeatedly tried and failed to have the Jones lawsuit dismissed. “We are still in the preliminary stages of the case,” Ross-Andino wrote in an email to CL. “We will also be working with some experts to quantify the emotional harm that Marlowe and his family suffered.” The Jones complaint alleges unlawful search and seizure, retaliation, failure to train, false arrest/ false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, abuse of process, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Jones is asking for $2 million in damages. “We’ve been keeping the faith and letting the justice system do its thing,” Jones told CL. “The judge setting a date for trial is big.” The Jones complaint isn’t the only lawsuit alleging major civil rights violations by NPR. In August, former NPR resident Michelle Wojciechowski and attorney Ross-Andino filed a federal lawsuit claiming harassment. Wojciechowski’s lawsuit is filed against the City of NPR, City Attorney Timothy Driscoll, and City Code Enforcement Officer Charles Morgan. She’s asking for $1 million in damages. Creative Loafing Tampa Bay reported earlier this year how NPR code enforcement had turned her and others’ lives upside down by using NPR police to harass residents for code violations. In a body camera video obtained by CL, NPR police made a Holocaust joke in the home of a Jewish resident they were searching for code violations. Eventually, the harassment by NPR law enforcement and code enforcement was so intense that it drove Wojciechowski from the city.
Before the case, CL obtained text messages between Manns and former City Councilman Jeff Starkey during Jones’s 2022 acquittal. “They didn’t realize he would be portrayed as a saint,” Manns texted. “He’s no saint,” Starkey responded. “No kidding,” Manns added. If he hadn’t been acquitted, Jones would’ve gotten a felony conviction and upwards of five years in prison. After years of litigation, all stemming from false charges, Jones hopes the end is in sight. “It’s going to conclude in 2024,” Jones told CL. “This is not what the city of New Port Richey wanted.”

CL obtained a video from March 16, 2022, of New Port Richey police officers assisting code enforcement at a private property for alleged code violations. ‘SUIT UP: Michelle Wojciechowski is also suing NewPort Richey continued from page 13 Last month, Driscoll responded to Wojciechowski’s complaint in court, essentially dismissing everything she’s alleging against him. Driscoll’s response also claims that he’s a state prosecutor, and therefore immune to those proceedings. It’s not clear if that’s true at this time. “It broke me down,” Wojciechowski said of Driscoll’s response. “Some of the stuff he wrote was just blatant lies.” CL contacted Driscoll for comment but didn’t hear back by publication. What is known is that Driscoll has lied about his position before. During his arrest on March 13, 2022, Driscoll said he was an attorney for the city of St. Pete. But that wasn’t true. And his legal opinions have landed other other cities in hot water. In 2007, Driscoll reportedly resigned as the city attorney for St. Pete Beach after then-city commissioner Linda Chaney said Driscoll gave the city “duplicitous advice.” Now, Driscoll is attached to not one but three federal lawsuits against the City of New
Port Richey. The third was filed last week by Ross-Andino on behalf of NPR resident Shinikki Whiting who they claim had her civil rights violated after NPR police tried to falsely charged with felony battery on a law enforcement officer. And yet, on Aug. 15, the City Council reappointed Driscoll as city attorney for one year beginning September 6. When Driscoll was re-appointed to the position, some in the public, including organizer Marlowe Jones, voiced concerns. “This is the same attorney who tried to go after Black Lives Matter activists with noise violations,” Marlowe Jones said at the Aug. 15, 2023 meeting. “If you’re going to go give this man a job and keep letting him take the city’s money, but not give a damn about the residents, shame on you.” Driscoll, who’s been in the position since 2016, didn’t ask for a wage increase this year. He reportedly makes $11,000 a month from the city for his services. “It makes me realize why I have to proceed with this lawsuit,” Wojciechowski said. “I’m in a position where I have some fight left in me.” A trial date hasn’t been set yet.

Three years since its inception—after dealing with a wave of growth from its initial launch and all of the media coverage that ensued— Pasta Packs is expanding at a pace that makes the most sense for a small scratch kitchen. What started as easy meals for a socially-distant world has evolved into a unique culinary experience with a perpetually-growing national footprint.
With how hard it is to succeed in the restaurant industry with a traditional business model these days (read: tight margins and general inflation) Tampa Bay restaurant watchers may see more local chefs and restaurateurs carve out niches and create ultra-unique concepts like Greg and Nic have. James Beard Foundation unites Tampa Bay’s best chefs this month, and more local foodie news. By Kyla Fields
Tampa is once again home to ‘Florida’s largest pumpkin,’ and it weighs 1,500 pounds For the past few years, a local farmer’s market has been hauling in an enormous pumpkin to kick off the fall season, and this year it appears the owners have landed their largest gourd to date. Last week, Bearss Grove at 1436 Lake Magdalene Blvd. in Carrollwood, announced the arrival of its largest pumpkin ever, a 1,500pound gourd imported from Michigan. Sitting on a throne of hay, this absolute unit of a pumpkin is the largest to date for Bearss Grove. In previous years, the farmers market has brought in a 969-pound pumpkin and a 989-pound pumpkin.
As usual, photos with the pinnacle of pumpkin are free, and after you pay homage to the state’s plumpest pump, stick around and explore the fall pumpkin patch, as well as seasonal produce. A spokesman for Bearss Grove told CL that the pumpkin will be on display through Halloween.—Colin Wolf New gourmet toast restaurant Toastique opens at Tampa’s Water Street this month This gourmet toast and juice bar describes itself as “a fresh, chic and rustic experience,” and there’s probably no better place for Toastique than Tampa’s Water Street district. About a year after the concept was originally announced, Tampa’s Toastique will open on Saturday, Oct. 28, according to a press release. The first 100 customers in line will receive 50 rewards dollars. Toastique heads to 1011 E Cumberland Ave. on the ground floor of the Cora building, around the corner from neighboring concepts like Predalina and Wagamama. Its menu consists of four major categories: toasts, smoothies, bowls and juices. Different ingredients that you can add to your toast include toppings like avocado, hummus, tomatoes, burrata and olives
alongside proteins like smoked salmon, prosciutto, lump crab and tuna. Its smoothie and bowl offerings include all of the expected fruit and granola options, or you can grab a coldpressed juice packed with feel-good ingredients like turmeric, ginger, lemon and kale. There are about 20 locations of the healthconscious business across the U.S., but the only Florida outposts live in Winter Garden and Sarasota in addition to Tampa and Orlando’s upcoming Toastiques. Twenty-five year-old entrepreneur Adrian Lojo— whose father operates the Clermont-based Lojo Restaurant Management— owns Tampa’s first Toastique with partners Valery Valencia, Yvis Manrique, and Sarai Sanchez. New cocktail lounge Alter Ego opening at Water Street Tampa Another day, another new concept headed to downtown’s popular Water Street district. Described as having “energetic vibes and soulful hospitality,” new listening room and cocktail lounge Alter Ego will be the booming neighborhood’s newest late-night addition. While there is no set opening date, Water Street’s social media states that Alter Ego will
debut sometime in early 2024. “Visualize an experience where curated beats blend seamlessly with sleek monochromatic design, offering intimate nooks and social spaces that redefine the nightlife scene,” Water Street writes about the music-focused Alter Ego. Alter Ego is opening on the ground floor of Water Street’s Asher building at 1050 Water St. and will share a wall with Proper House Group’s Italian restaurant Ash. Although Ash’s development has been delayed, its website says the upscale Italian eatery will now open around the corner at 420 S Nebraska Ave. sometime in 2024. Ash and Alter Ego are “sibling concepts” with contrasting designs and ambiances. Renderings from Houston-based gin design group depict Alter Ego as a sleek, monochromatic space with red undertones and pops of neon. Chef Alvarez co-owns Alter Ego with partners Chon Nguyen and Ty Rodriguez under the Proper House Group umbrella. The opening of Alter Ego marks Proper House Group’s sixth concept in Tampa, including Bib Gourmandwinning Rooster & the Till, Nebraska Mini Mart, Sparkman Wharf’s Dang Dude, Lunch Lady and Gallito Taqueria.

or the first time since 2019, the James Beard Foundation—a nationally-recognized culinary institution—is making its return to Tampa Bay. On Sunday, Oct. 29 Hyde Park restaurant Willa’s (1700 W Fig St.) will host the foundation’s Beard by the Bay dinner, a culmination of the best local chefs, mixologists and sommeliers who will raise money for the food-focused nonprofit’s mission of “contributing to the development of the next generation of great American chefs.” Just a few of the local chefs that will contribute to this month’s charity dinner include Rooster & the Till’s Ferrell Alvarez (a James Beard semifinalist in 2017), Supernatural Food & Wine owner Wesley Roderick, BT Nguyen of Restaurant BT, executive chefs from all three of Tampa’s Michelinawarded restaurants (Rocca, Koya and Lilac) and Gabe Lopez of host restaurant Willa’s. Pinellasbased chefs include Wild Child’s Rob Reinsmith, David Benstock of IL Ritorno and James Renew of Clearwater’s Little Lamb Gastropub. Some restaurants will also showcase their bartenders and mixologists to compliment the event’s multicourse tasting dinner. Tickets to this year’s Beard by the Bay are about $1,000 each—with tables of four and six costing $4,000 and $6,000, respectively. Each guest will have access to the six-course tasting dinner, premium wines, cocktails and N/A pairings. A table of eight guests cost $7,500 and the largest and most expensive option is the “Chef’s Table,” which seats 14 patrons in a private room for a whopping $20,000. T
ampa Bay is exceedingly lucky to have a critical mass of locally produced professional theater. And rather than playing it safe by mounting well-known titles, our artistic directors are not afraid to take risks on exciting new work or lesser known plays. Opening night of “Indecent” by Paula Vogel at American Stage was a triumph for Producing Artistic Director, Helen R. Murray, who celebrates her first anniversary in St. Petersburg by directing one of the most fully realized evenings of theater I’ve seen here in the last decade. Every element works in perfect sync toward the same ends. The 110-minute intermission-less play goes by in a flash. The momentum steadily builds as the stellar cast of seven actors (Cynthia Beckert, Mykail Cooley, Emma Friedman, Eric Olson, Josephine Phoenix, Michael Raver, Cody Taylor) sing/dance and play 42 distinct characters with a plethora of accents. It vividly chronicles the birth of Sholem Asch’s Yiddish “God of Vengeance” where the daughter of a Jewish brothel owner falls in love with one of her father’s prostitutes. Asch’s script includes a love scene in the rain between the two women that later sparks controversy, although the antisemites thought his play was too Jewish, while orthodox worshippers thought it wasn’t Jewish enough. Playwright
Vogel strikes a contemporary blow against the business of religion as one character notes that “even the Jews sell God for a price.” Murray utilizes the first row audience as though they are players in the creation of the script drawing us into 1906 Warsaw. Then it’s off to 1908 Berlin with a thrilling, sexy cabaret, part of the marvelous choreography throughout by Jessica Scruggs. Success across Europe from Bratislava to Constantinople brings us to 1922 with an English translation in America. This gives Ms. Friedman a chance to get fired for one character’s inability to speak English, only to turn around and transform into a dewy-eyed ingenue who is hilariously American. The cast is uniformly expert and facile with their many dialects. And making the colorblind castling of the endearing Mr. Cooley as playwright Asch, et. al. adds another surprising dimension. A thrilling element of the production is the extended presence of a virtuoso klezmer trio as costumed characters onstage: Melody Allegra Berger (violin/mandolin), Samuel Perlman (clarinet/bass clarinet), and Julia Williams (accordion). This music instantly evokes the joyous folk traditions of the shtetl. It’s also an exhilarating piece of stagecraft with stunning work from Jonathan Dahm

Robertson (Sets/Projections), David Arterberry (Lighting), and Debra Kim Sivigny (Costumes). Each element is a master class in the use of color and texture. And the choice to present the excerpts of Asch’s play as distinctly melodramatic in defined white spotlights is inspired. The years tick by and we revisit the Holocaust and confront profound issues which are still torn from the headlines—censorship, immigration and homophobia. Ultimately, we’re left with the emotional sight of two people falling in love as they dance in the rain. Florida is the butt of the joke in Natalie Symons’ hilarious ‘Nightsweat’ The world premiere of Natalie Symons’ hilarious “Nightsweat“ at freeFall is quite accurately described in the program as “‘Bridesmaids’ meets ‘Halloween.’” And while the ever clever Ms. Symons takes aim throughout at many easy targets with great panache (Ron DeSantis, Ted Cruz), her script and cast take particular relish at making fun of Florida, much to the delight of the opening night crowd. This is another example of a group of highly skilled artists at the top of their game. Director Eric Davis (also sets/costumes/sound/props) has assembled a dream cast and staged/designed this “unapologetic, irreverent comedy” to uproarious effect. There’s lots of schtick and laughs that you can see coming, but all the actors are so skilled and committed that the verbal and physical comedy still lands with huge belly laughs.
B-level musical actress Britney Cox (Kristin Carbone) has been canceled on social media due to complications with her appearance as Ursula in “The Little Mermaid.” Her anxious young assistant, Maude Bender (Heather Baird) has booked a girl’s weekend getaway to hide from the haters at a Berkshires’ AirBnB that features a “murder mystery weekend.” She’s joined by her makeup artist Tawny Fitzsimmons (Sara DelBeato) who is more than happy to get away from her boorish husband and her monstrous triplets. Britney’s security detail is a Black woman ex-cop, Dale James (Hillary ScalesLewis) who reports that, surprise, the car’s tires have been slashed. When the Bershire newspaper arrives, it warns that a serial killer is on the loose targeting “pre-elderly women,” which means that the entourage members, minus the young Maude, are all at risk. A mysterious landlady, Mrs. Bates (Jan Neuberger) and her pipe bomb building nephew Steven Paul (Joe Ditmyer) who lives in the basement and carries around an ax, complete the opportunities for comic mayhem. And suffice it to say that nothing escapes Ms. Symons’ satirical spear. Wokeness, pronouns, white privilege, Ozempic, don’t say gay, horror movie tropes, fake news, Tucker Carlson, and on and on. Plus there’s a running gag about Hall & Oats that works every time. HAWK FOR THE DOVE: Amanda Shires’ latest solo album is her sharpest to date. WMNF 88.5-FM was the first to play her music, and she was close with the late John Prine, who kept a home in Gulfport. Revisiting all the memories, plus spots Prine and others loved, isn’t the hard part of losing someone, she told CL. “When you consider looking for somebody that’s not here anymore for advice or a laugh—that’s when I kind of feel the losses the most,” Shires added. And while Pig Jig is a party, don’t necessarily expect Shires to back down from speaking her mind. She’s been critical of the low percentage of women on country radio, attributing the problem with the format to the fact that “there’s a bunch of old white men still in control,” but also found something of a silver lining. “The good news is that who the fuck listens to country radio,” she told CL. “Hopefully those guys will retire to go play golf. Like they’ll let us young kids that have some ideas and bigger ideas about the world takeover.” At the festival, she opens a stellar lineup headlined by Brad Paisley, alongside The Head
and the Heart, and Shovels and Rope. Pig Jig’s other booking, Riley Green, recently came under scrutiny when he removed “Bud Light” from his lyrics after the brand gave transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney her own commemorative can. Shires told CL that she’s never heard of Green, and surrendered that there will always be dummies out there no matter what anyone does. “All we can do is keep trying to show people a different path and see people as people, like get out and meet some people instead of just standing there in your privileged place of manness, and comment on things like Bud Light,” she said. “Like go the fuck the hell. What do you know about this world? Who are you anyway?” Shires joked about dressing up like a Bud Light for her performance, but said she won’t be saying Green’s name out loud at Pig Jig. “I don’t believe like that. I’m all about acceptance and letting people be people,” she told CL. “I feel like I just naturally counteract that kind of energy.”

C Clearwater Jazz Holiday: The Beach Boys w/Dustbown Revival/CJH Young Lions/Gipsy Kings/Los Lobos/Dustbowl Revival/more This year’s lineup—a grand return home to Coachman Park and its brand-new outdoor venue, The Sound—features a plethora of CJH repeat offenders, including R&B legend Gladys Knight, guitar veteran Buddy Guy—in the midst of his “Damn Right Farewell Tour”—and classic funk outfit Average White Band. Preservation Hall Jazz Band also returns, while Jazz Holiday gives fans a glimpse at the future of the blues with a Sunday set by Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. Gipsy Kings will lend a world music vibe to the 2023 Clearwater Jazz Holiday lineup, while Dustbowl Revival and Trampled By Turtles bring Americana and bluegrass to the fourday affair. Also included are first timers Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Los Lobos, and the current lineup of The Beach Boys, fronted by Mr. “Good night baby, sleep tight baby” himself, Mike Love. (The Sound, Clearwater) C The Church Formed in 1980 in Sydney, Australia, The Church boasts classic ‘80s new wave charm that most folks associate with bands like Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure and The Psychedelic Furs (who just played the same Clearwater venue just a few months ago). The band’s recent performance at 2022’s Cruel World Festival alongside heavy hitters Blondie, Bauhaus and Morrissey helped bring The Church out of 19th century nostalgia—landing it right in front of Tampa Bay fans this week. The Aussie group has been steadily releasing albums since the early ‘80s despite original members coming and going, and its most recent release, 2023’s The Hypnogogue, was lauded by critics and described by PopMatters as “another stunning record,” full of psychedelic jams and shimmering riffs. While we’re excited to hear the newer singles The Church has to offer, we hope its most popular hymns like “Under the Milky Way” and “Reptile” off of the 1988 album Starfish are on the setlist, too. (Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, Clearwater) Common Kings w/Jakobs Castle This quintet is made up of members from Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Hawaii and their pride for their various Pacific Islander heritages are prominently displayed in Common Kings’ special brand of reggae-rock. The Californiabased band received a Grammy nomination for best reggae album for its debut LP, 2017’s Lost in Paradise, and has been steadily releasing comprehensive works and singles since. Common Kings heads on its nationwide “Road to Maui” tour in support of its sophomore album Celebration, which was released earlier this year. Singer-songwriter Jakobs Castle—who is the son of Sublime’s

If you like spoilers, Bissett has a compilation of his 10-track setlist put together on Apple Music. (Crowbar, Ybor City) The Cat Empire w/High Fade It looks like founding members Felix Riebl and Ollie McGill are adjusting to a new repertoire in The Cat Empire. Twenty years following the release of its debut album, the Australian funk band is fresh off of a massive lineup change, and a new album, Where The Angels Fall, with songs about robbing a store, a love for thunder, and all the upbeat horns you could want. The group’s first U.S. tour since 2019 kicks off with three dates in Florida— where it has never been before. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg) Fall Shock w/Dead Cool/Ortrotasce Fall Shock calls itself “an Italian electronic music project,” and the sounds on the duo’s 2023 album Universal Unit Crime will definitely please fans of dark, goth-club-ready EBM and synthpop. Darkwave vibes run throughout the bill thanks to North Carolina duo Dead Cool and Ortrotasce, helmed by local lord of analog synth and sequencers, Nic Hamersly. C Mark Moultrup and John Lamb John Lamb—on the cusp of his 90th birthday—has a million stories to tell about his time slapping the bass for Duke Ellington throughout the flip side of the 1960s and into the ‘70s. He calls St. Petersburg home and has even taught music at St. Petersburg College. Mark Moultrup—a pianist who previously lived in Chicago and Detroit—also resides in St. Pete, and has performed with the likes of Smokey Robinson and Eddie Kendricks. His collaboration with Lamb, entitled Stories, began production in 2017, but due to COVID-19, it was put on hold, but finally released this summer. (Side Door at Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg) C Vacations w/Last Dinosaurs/Eliza McLamb On her “Binchtopia” podcast with Julia Hava, Eliza McLamb fearlessly weigh on on pop (and ancient) culture, with no agenda to stick to one topic (everything from prison sentencing and reality TV is on the table). Musically, however, McLamb plays grungy guitar-pop that’s hooky in a Taylor Swift kind of way (her “Mytholgoize Me” could be a sibling song to Taylor’s “Mine”). The former farmhand with viral TikTok cred opens this stacked indie-pop bill featuring Car Seat Headrest pal Last Dinosaurs, and Australian outfit Vacations, which last hit town for a soldout show at Crowbar. C Psychedelic Porn Crumpets w/Nolan Potter’s Nightmare Band The Aussie-bred psychedelic-rock outfit has been on its own label, What Reality? since 2019, and another studio album entitled Fronzoli is set for release next month. “Every nuance has been discussed, slandered and carefully contorted into place, it sporadically colours outside the lines so you’re left with these extraverted squiggles,” main creative force Jack McEwan wrote in the album’s description. Expect plenty of distortion in both guitars and vocals, and even a little bit of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard influence at the band’s Tampa Bay debut. (Crowbar, Ybor City) Sara Elisa Villa and Company A member of the BOTB-nominated Opera Tampa will have insane family tree stories to tell at this free jazz workshop. Sara Elisa Villa’s father was the first cellist in the Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra for a time. Grandpa was peace activist Alvaro Villa, who sang with the Von Trapp Family Singers, and established new neighborhoods for struggling families until he was captured and murdered in Colombia. The workshop features a sneak peek into the youngest Villa’s creative process and how she blends her culture into her music. The day ends with a free concert from Sara and her parents, and while it’s open to the public, you have to register for the workshop. (TECO Theater at David A. is a contingent of online commenters who moan and groan about the Clearwater Jazz Holiday lineup, which mixes in Americana, blues and R&B more often than not. This Sunday afternoon affair should get that peanut gallery to, well, shut the fuck up for a day. For this slate of music ahead of closing festivities, the nonprofit music festival has assembled some of Tampa Bay’s best working jazz musicians—including Brazilian songwriter Daniele Soledade, Berklee-grad and saxophonist Trace Zacur, plus neuroscientist-pianist John O’Leary—to join Ghost-Note (a band led by Snarky Puppy percussionists Robert “Sput” Searight and Nate Werth) and Jazz Holiday’s youth band for nine free performances across three different stages in Coachman Park and downtown Clearwater’s Station Square. (Coachman Park & Downtown Clearwater) C Fear Frenzy 2023: Traitors w/He Is Legend/Cane Hill/Greyhaven/Kaonashi/ Enox/Mouthbreather/Gas FL/more Traitors goes hard. Last March, the Tampabased metalcore outfit’s drummer Stephen Arango had to drop off a tour after breaking his hand on the face of a man who died to rob him. A month before that, the band’s leader, Tyler Shelton, forcefully expressed an unfiltered opinion about a metal scene that takes advantage of young, hardworking bands, adding that if gatekeepers “can’t monetize off it, they will keep you at the bottom of the ladder.” This weekend, Shelton & co. get to lead the charge on a stacked bill of the genre’s best, happening at Orpheum, the Bay area’s veritable cradle of metal. (Orpheum, Tampa) Nick Carter w/Maddie Poppe Now that Backstreet’s back off the road, the boyband’s youngest member—and resident Tampeño—has plenty of stories to tell about what he’s been through in the last few years. The death of Carter’s younger brother Aaron last fall will almost certainly be a central theme on Sunday night, but his current setlist mainly consists of classic rock and Backstreet Boys covers, as well as a fistful of actual solo material. Don’t expect him to mention the sexual assault allegations mentioned in a recent lawsuit against him. (Ferguson Hall at Straz Center, Tampa) C Ona Kirei Last summer, the Barcelonaborn singer-songwriter promised that she was working on a new album of entirely original material. Months later, Full, New Luna—described as a record that “welcomes the audience to connect with the powerful and intimate cycles of nature, the cycles of feminine energy, of the Moon, and of Earth’s renewal”—is complete. Ahead of its March release, Kirei, along with a four-piece band and a string quartet, is set to perform the whole thing for the first time ever on 5th Avenue. Early physical copies will also be available for the first time. (Hough Hall at Palladium Theater, St. Petersburg) C Unknown Mortal Orchestra w/Amulets If you’ve ever wanted to see a Muppet get drunk and abducted by aliens or a behind the scenes look at Ruban Nielson’s offstage life, look no further than the music videos behind Unknown Mortal Orchestra's double album V. The Auckland-based psych-rock outfit has surprisingly never played a gig in Tampa Bay, but this show is a nice UMO career retrospective. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

C Coppertail Brewing Co. Ninth Anniversary Concert: Blu DeTiger w/ Copeland/Trash Panda/Visit Neptune/ Turkey Boy Coppertail is really good at throwing anniversary concerts. The Nude Party is among its past headliners, and this weekend it opts for pop in the headlining slot, care of New York City songwriter and bass player Blu DeTiger who just released a catchy Mallrat collaboration in the wake of cuts with Chromeo and Biig Piig (she’s also played the Bonnaroo Superjam and appeared in Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driving Home 2 U” film). Indiepsych band Trash Panda plus local favorites Visit Neptune and Turkey Boy round things out, but the gig is anchored by a set from Lakeland emo-rock royalty, Copeland, which put Central Florida on the map 20 years ago with its masterful debut LP, Beneath Medicine Tree. The free show happens on the back loading dock of the brewery just outside of Ybor City and kicks off at 4 p.m. (Coppertail Brewing Co., Tampa)

Moon Walker w/Nordista Freeze Moon Walker started off as a way for Harry Springer—a former Colorado musician who moved to California in early 2020—to make a little extra money at the height of COVID-19. But it got to the point where he began writing and recording songs that included thoughts of his that he didn’t want to give away. The came together on a seven-track album entitled Truth to Power, and became a hit thanks to TikTok and endorsement from The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins. But more recently, 24-year-old Springer released his sophomore album, The Attack of Mirrors, described as something spicier and more punk-influenced than the last one. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa)

C mssv w/Liquid Pennies A band featuring Mike Baggetta and Minutemen’s Mike Watt plays a small club show this weekend. The guys do live electronic processing for MSSV—which stands for ”Main Steam Stop Valve”—but the trio also features drummer Stephen Hodges (Mavis Staples, Tom Waits) who joined after drummer Jim Keltner, who recorded the band’s 2019 debut Wall Of Flowers, said he didn’t want to travel. That same year MSSV recorded and released a live album, Live Flowers, which showcases a jazz-ish, but mostly genre-averse, freeform sound. Since then, MSSV gave fans a self-titled full-length studio album (2020), an EP (Scott Aicher, 2021), the 7-inch record (“Media Kittens”/ “When The Hoarding Has Ended”, 2020). Last spring, MSSV was joined on a 7-inch by guitarist Nels Cline, who recently told CL a lot of great things about Watt ahead of Wilco’s April Bay area show. Minutemen, which opened for R.E.M. at St. Pete’s since demolished Bayfront Center in 1985, only released music until the late’80s, but ruined the lives of countless young music fans with a special brand of punk-rock that was political, funny, fast and allergic to genrefication. C Tampa Bay Pre-Fest 7: Mspaint w/Madison Bloodbath/Tiltwheel/ Amygdala/The Holy Ghost Tabernacle Choir/more Not everyone can make it up to Gainesville’s fall punk-rock bacchanal, Bay area fans can thank Chewy Hemphill for bringing a slice of The Fest to town. In its seventh year (and this time featuring co-promotion from Locust Parade), Pre-Fest takes over Hooch for two days of music from nearly two dozen bands from all over the world including the U.K’s Sunliner, Phantom Bay from Germany, plus nationals (Fat Heaven from New York, Se Vende from California) and local favorites, too. Two mystery bands are on the bill, and if Hemphill’s connections over the years mean anything, expect them to be heavy hitters. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa) The Soap Girls w/Living Dead Girl/more Camille and Noémie Debray first caught the public's attention when they were performing in the streets of South Africa while also selling hand-made soaps (profits went to hospitals). It’s definitely safe to say that karma caught up with the sisters, because though their time with Universal Records came to a bitter end due to lack of leniency in creative control, the Debrays’ debut album was no. 1 on South African charts for a time. These days, the girls—making their Tampa Bay debut Wednesday—are self-releasing their own material, including last year’s In My Skin, described as their grungiest album yet. (Brass Mug, Tampa)

For now, you can be compassionate with your sister while also setting some boundaries (maybe no more than three vent-calls a week?) and encourage her when you can. Life in the country is incredibly stressful for parents, and no one wants to feel like their partner isn’t stepping up. Tell her what a good job she’s doing. If you live close by and are able to, perhaps offer to watch the kids so they can go to therapy or have a date night or do whatever. If you don’t, maybe provide support in other ways (UberEats gift card? Instacarting groceries to their house?) that help make parenting a little easier. Hopefully, things work out. But keep being that calm knight, even if nothing changes, and the resentment grows, therapy fails, and they end up divorced. In the worst-case scenario, you can be your sister’s port in the storm, and you can provide a safe haven for her and the kids, emotionally or physically speaking. Just don’t say, “I told you so.” Sisters hate that shit.
