his month, the newly formed Tampa Arts Alliance kicked off a series of mostly virtual “Arts Townhalls” where community members can voice opinions on how to move art forward in the city’s neighborhoods. Artists, advocates, buyers and anyone Tampa or Hillsborough residents interested in the local art community are encouraged to come to one or all of the meetings. The first one was on Septy. 1, and you don’t have to be a resident of the specific neighborhood where the meetings’ focus lies. The remaining four meetings are all virtual at 6:30 p.m. with the dates and focus-areas as Tuesday, Sept. 14 (West Tampa), Wednesday, Sept. 29 (North Tampa) and Wednesday, Oct. 6 (East Tampa). The Oct. 13 meeting to discuss Downtown Tampa and Ybor City is tentatively set to meet in person at a location yet to be announced. Local philanthropist Neil Gobioff formed the Tampa Arts Alliance through the Gobioff Foundation, with Tucker/Hall PR, to increase arts awareness in Tampa, attract more funding for the arts, connect artists with local arts organizations, and create a clearer vision for the arts in Tampa. Kaiju Big Battel Manga meets the wrestling ring in Ybor City this weekend when comic book pages and anime come alive for Kaiju Big Battel at Orpheum. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay offers a chance to connect with the best of the triumvirate every Tuesday and Thursday when it hosts “Paws for Literacy” where kids aged 5-12 pull up a stool, and stack of books (or even their own homework), then read to a bunch of furballs. “[The program] helps our shelter animals feel more comfortable, making them more adoptable. Children develop their reading skills and empathy for animals in a nurturing environment,” the nonprofit said. hat I saw on my first visit to Fairgrounds St. Pete in April 2021 was merely an outline of what was to come. Five months later, Liz Dimmitt and Mikhail Mansion’s Florida fantasyland is fully realized, and it’s every bit as awesome as I’d hoped it would be. ast Thursday, Elijah Lord, 19, was in a state of despair and confusion as he packed up the apartment that he and his three brothers have lived in for two years. The day before, he received a writ of possession from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s office, giving them less than 24 hours to leave the property. They are now facing homelessness for the first time in their lives. Lord and his brothers don’t have any family in the area to stay with. So now, they are choosing which belongings to leave and which ones they want to try to fit into a car that they might be living in as soon as this weekend. Despite the dire situation, Lord is holding onto hope. “I keep thinking of the saying, ‘This too shall pass,’” he told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. Editor’s note: As this story went to print, Lord and his brothers were being evicted by PCSO. After the Biden administration’s eviction moratorium was shot down by the Supreme Court last week, landlords have rushed to remove tenants in Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties, along with the rest of the country, who were previously protected by the rule. The writ of possession is the final step of the eviction process. It notifies renters that they must leave the property immediately under threat of arrest, and casts people out of their homes during a still-raging COVID-19 pandemic. From Aug. 1 until Sept. 2, 445 “writs of possession” were served in Hillsborough, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO). The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) told CL that 235 writs have been served since August. Lord says he had a job interview on Thursday but instead had to pack up his belongings at his apartment in Osprey Pointe. The eviction has upended his attempt to become more stable during the pandemic. “They say it was because of back rent, but I was very vocal about all the problems going on in our apartment,” Lord told CL. “There was mold, and the air conditioning, dishwasher, and kitchen sink were messed up.” CL sent emails and left voicemails asking Osprey Pointe management how many people

Renters organize to protect each other Back at Osprey Pointe apartments, nine members of the St. Pete Tenants Union (SPTU) and Tampa Tenants’ union gathered to support Elijah Lord and his brothers on Thursday. They contacted a local legal group, and hope to get a legal “stay of writ,” because of Lord’s attempt to get rental assistance. “We don’t want to see people living out in the streets or in their cars,” said Karla Correa with SPTU. “It’s a public health issue. We’re calling on Biden and the federal government to stop this process that was enacted by the Supreme Court, an unelected group of people who are siding with the rich and leaving the poor to struggle. We have to challenge this.” Lord’s writ notice said that the premises needed to be vacated by 9:20 a.m. last Thursday, but by Friday afternoon, he was still preparing while the union members waited to see if PCSO would arrive at the property. Lord is trying to stay on the bright side, and he plans to talk about his experience on his podcast when things are less hectic for him. “I’ve been immersed in thought during all of this, but at the same time I’m trying to keep my mind clear,” Lord says. “But I keep thinking that people have to speak up about their situations, and we have to come together as we’re going through these tough times.”

Strange parallel

Revisiting a 1931 clash between Tampa cigar workers and police. By Justin Garcia

n the evening of Nov. 7, 1931, a crowd of police gathered near Ybor’s Labor Temple— now known as the iconic goth club The Castle—to stop Tampa workers from hosting a parade. Cigar workers and the rest of the working class in the city had suffered through hard economic times as a result of the Great Depression, and they wanted to march from Ybor to downtown Tampa to encourage more people to join the communist labor movement. The Tampa Tribune reported that inside the temple, the communists had red flags and a sign reading, “Black and white, unite and fight!” They had already demanded eviction protections and more pay to protect workers in Tampa during the Depression, but they wanted to parade through the city to appeal to more community members, who would hopefully join them in their demands. By 6 p.m., police were in Ybor with riot guns and fire-hoses. Fifty men from the American Legion (who were asked to volunteer by the police) showed up as well, ready to stop any sort of communist worker’s parade. Hundreds of workers arrived at the temple that day, and there was an overflow of people onto the street, according to witnesses accounts shared with The Nation. But police said to reporters that none of the people had begun setting up for a parade. Regardless, police said they “attempted to disperse the crowd,” telling them there would be no parade. A cigar worker named Felix Marrero told police that there was a telegram from Governor Doyle Carlton saying that a parade was legal, which would defy then Tampa Mayor Robert E. Lee Chancey, who had decided against the parade. Reports from the time and local historians say that Marrero was probably mistaken in his claim that the governor had overruled the mayor.

The police detained Marrero. Reports say he fought back, and witnesses saw him hauled off to jail covered with blood. There is some debate as to who started the fight, but the St. Petersburg Times reported that “Twenty-three policemen rushed the crowd of several hundred and they resisted.” Bricks were thrown and more blood was drawn. Local papers did not ask for the worker’s input on the situation. Reporting was often skewed against them, labeling them “Reds.” But according to police accounts shared with the media, during the fight, a brick hit the head of Police Officer David Wilson and shots were fired from the second story of the temple. A bullet hit Police Officer J. N. Byrd. Some reports say the non-fatal shot hit him in the shoulder, while others say he was shot in the back and a bullet went through his lung. Police reinforcements pushed people into the Labor Temple and cleared the street. According to The Nation, a boy selling a copy of The Daily Worker, a labor newspaper, was shoved by police. The boy yelled and was arrested. His mother objected and was also arrested, and a passerby named Jose Campo, a traveling salesman came to the aid of the woman and was arrested, too. A detachment of police and legionnaires wedged its way into the Temple and made arrests. Reports are mixed, ranging from 15 to 22 workers being arrested that day. From what can be determined from the reports, charges were brought against 17 of them, of which 15 received harsh sentences. Here’s what to expect in the St. Pete general election. By McKenna Schueler

Important general election dates and deadlines • General Election Day: Nov. 2, 2021 (Note: There is no Early Voting period for St. Pete municipal elections, so get on that mail ballot,) • Last day to register to vote: Oct. 4, 2021 (before 5 p.m.) • Last day to request a mail ballot: Oct. 23, 2021 (before 5 p.m.) • Military and overseas voter mailing deadline: Sept. 18, 2021 Many of the most important issues facing St. Pete residents, such as affordable housing, public safety, infrastructure, community health, and economic opportunity for workers and small businesses are influenced by decisions made by local governmental officials. While some things can be better (or must be) addressed on the federal or state levels, there’s a lot that goes down in the halls—and Zoom calls—of our city leaders, including St. Petersburg’s mayor and City Council members. Because Creative Loafing Tampa Bay is committed to making local news (and information about local elections) accessible for all, we’ve put together a rundown for what will be on the Municipal General Election ballot. What’s on the ballot This year, voters in St. Pete will elect the city’s next mayor and have the opportunity to vote for City Council members in Districts 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8. Furthermore, the ballot will also contain one referendum question and seven questions regarding city charter amendments. St. Pete’s current mayor, Rick Kriseman, is unable to file for a third term in office, due to term limits. He will be succeeded by one of the two remaining candidates campaigning for mayor: Ken Welch or Robert Blackmon. City Council Districts 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 have two candidates, each, that will appear on the ballot for all voters in St. Pete. City Council Districts 2 and 6 have incumbents who are seeking reelection. Since each incumbent received only a single challenger, all four candidates (including the two incumbents) automatically advanced to the General. Their names did not appear on the Primary Election ballot. All municipal contests in St. Pete on the General ballot this November will be decided at large—meaning voters citywide will

have the opportunity to cast their vote for mayor and for candidates in all five City Council races. Who’s running for mayor Of the eight candidates who appeared on the Primary Election ballot, only two candidates—Robert Blackmon and Ken Welch—will be squaring off this November in the general, after securing the highest number of votes on Aug. 24. Welch, a registered Democrat and former Republican, received the largest percentage of votes in the primary— nearly 40% of the vote, equivalent to 21,927 votes citywide. Blackmon, a registered Republican, followed Welch with 15,659 votes, or a little over 28% of the vote. Robert Blackmon is City Council

St. Pete City Council District 2 District 2 incumbent and real estate broker Brandi Gabbard will face candidate Kyle Hall, a small business owner and Marine Corps veteran challenging Gabbard’s bid for a second term in office. There was no primary election for this race. St. Pete City Council District 4 City Council candidates Lisset Hanewicz and Tom Mullins won the highest number of votes in the August primary. Their names will appear on the General Election ballot for District 4. In the August primary, Hanewicz—a former prosecutor and community advocate—won nearly 42% of votes cast on a ballot with four other candidates. Mullins—a aymond James investment banker and anti-

his November, voters in St. Petersburg will decide on their next mayor, and have the opportunity to cast votes for candidates running in several City Council races. All municipal races in St. Pete are non-partisan, but here are some basic dates and ballot info to get familiar with now.

St. Pete City Council District 1 Out of four candidates vying for the District 1 seat in August, City Council candidates Bobbie Shay Lee and Copley Gerdes have advanced to the General Election, Lee—a former nonprofit director, former TECO lobbyist, breast cancer advocat—got 33.76% of the vote, while Gerdes—a financial advisor, son of former City Council member Charlie Gerdes—received 33.81% of the vote. Needless to say, it was a close tie for the No. 1 spot. District 1 is up for election in 2021 due to the resignation of Blackmon of District 1, who is currently running for Mayor. Blackmon’s

“woke” candidate—trailed behind Hanewicz with about 24% of the vote. St. Pete City Council District 6 District 6 incumbent Gina Driscoll will face District 6 City Council candidate Mhariel Summers on the General Election ballot. Summers—a former District Secretary for State Rep. Michele Rayner (D-70), former campaign staffer for Charlie Crist (for Congress) and Phillip Levine (for Governor)—is challenging Driscoll’s bid for a second term in office. There was no primary election for this race. St. Pete City Council District 8 From the August primary, City Council candidates Richie Floyd and former City Council

member Jeff Danner became the top two contenders for District 8, advancing to the General Election. Floyd—a middle school teacher, community activist, and political organizer—led the August primary vote by a mile, earning 51.81% of the total vote in District 8, equivalent to 3,087 votes. Danner, who came in second, received about 27% of the vote, or 1,605 votes. St. Pete general election ballot questions One city of St. Petersburg referendum and seven charter amendments will appear on the 2021 St. Pete Municipal General Election ballot. Referendum question: Providing City Council with the Authority to Grant Economic Development Ad Valorem Tax Exemptions If passed, this charter amendment would allow City Council to authorize property tax exemptions to new businesses and expansions of existing businesses that are expected to create new, full-time jobs in St. Pete, pursuant to the Article VII of the State Constitution. No. 1 Charter Amendment: Limiting City Council Elections to Voters in the Applicable Council District and Making Related Changes Would amend the city charter to limit City Council elections to their respective districts for both the Primary and General Elections. It would also allow candidates who receive more than 50% of the vote in the Primary to be elected (Note: currently the top two in the primary advance to the General), and “make other clarifying changes”. No. 2 Charter Amendment: Establishing New Process for Drawing District Boundaries for Election of City Council Members This charter amendment would create a new process for drawing City Council District boundaries, which occurs every 10 years. The amendment contains additional recommendations for how this process would occur (e.g. requiring comprehensive standards for drawing equitable district boundaries). No. 3 Charter Amendment: Establishing an Equity Framework and Chief Equity Officer for City Government This charter amendment would establish an “equity framework” for addressing equity gaps on the basis of characteristics such as race and ethnicity. This would also require the creation of an equity action plan, which would be regularly assessed. A Chief Equity Officer position for the city would also be created, in order to head this initiative. No. 4 Charter Amendment: Establishing a Requirement for Charter-Protected Equity Funding What this is: Require that the city designate “Charter-protected equity funding” to address equity gaps on the basis of characteristics such as race and ethnicity, and prevent the protected funding from being used for other purposes. continued on page 19

Get ready, the most radical Supreme Court in U.S. history just announced its intentions. By Jeffrey C. Billman

abortions can’t be sued, they have no standing to sue, either. The entirety of Texas’s case was a juvenile taunt: We found a loophole, nanny-nanny-booboo. And that was good enough. “The Court’s order is stunning,” Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in a fiery dissent. “Presented with an application to enjoin a flagrantly unconstitutional law engineered to prohibit women from exercising their constitutional rights and evade judicial scrutiny, a majority of Justices have opted to bury their heads in the sand.” “Taken together, the Act is a breathtaking act of defiance—of the Constitution, of this Court’s precedents, and of the rights of women seeking abortions throughout Texas,” she continued. “… Today, the Court finally

n May, when the Supreme Court agreed to hear Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, it was clear Roe v. Wade’s days were numbered. Mississippi had banned most abortions after 15 weeks of gestation. Its law was obviously unconstitutional, at least insofar as the court has interpreted the Constitution since 1973. But the state asked the court to ignore stare decisis based on its purported concern for “the health of the maternal patient, the dignity of the unborn child, and the integrity of the medical profession.” At least four justices thought this argument was worth considering, a portentous sign for reproductive freedom. At minimum, the court’s ultraconservatives appeared likely to allow abortion restrictions before Roe’s fetal-viability threshold, about 24 weeks. Before the court got to Dobbes, however, Texas offered Roe’s head on a silver platter. In a oneparagraph ruling issued around midnight on Sept. 2, Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brent Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett accepted. The majority’s unsigned opinion sidestepped its “serious questions” about SB 8’s constitutionality and lazily avoided the real-world implications of letting the law take effect, framing the decision as narrow and technical. It was neither. Faced with a frontal assault on a long-established precedent, the ultraconservatives hid behind a technicality transparently designed to flout the Constitution and created a roadmap for states to circumvent civil rights protections. About 54,000 women received abortions in Texas in 2020, nearly three-quarters of whom were women of color, according to the state’s department of health. In a court filing, abortion providers said that at least 85% of Texas abortions took place after six weeks, the point at which fetal cardiac activity is usually detected but before many women know they’re pregnant. That’s when SB 8 bans abortion. Other states passed so-called heartbeat bills, but federal judges laughed them out of court. So Texas devised a sort of Rube Goldberg enforcement mechanism. Instead of having police and health inspectors enforce its unconstitutional law, it would de-facto deputize random zealots and busybodies to act as Uterus Cops, awarding them bounties to sue abortion providers, nonprofits, insurance companies, and anyone else who helped a woman access an “illegal” procedure. Because state officials weren’t involved, Texas argued, abortion providers had no one to sue in federal court, so a federal judge couldn’t strike down the law. And because women seeking

parents, internet stalkers, fundamentalist creeps, antiabortion vigilantes. (Providers must likewise document a negative “heartbeat” test.) The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act doesn’t prevent the disclosure of records relevant to litigation. There’s no penalty for frivolous, fake, or vindictive claims. In fact, abortion opponents have every incentive to file lawsuits by the truckload. If they win, they collect “not less than $10,000 for each abortion that the defendant performed or induced [or] aided and abetted.” What’s more, judges must award “injunctive relief sufficient to prevent the defendant from violating” the law again—i.e., possibly closing a facility, even if abortion is one of many services it provides. If they lose, they still win. Defendants must pay plaintiffs’ costs and attorneys’ fees if a judge finds that they provided or aided an illegal abortion, but judges are prohibited from ordering plaintiffs to pay up if their case gets tossed. SB 8 is designed to be abusive. Whether or not abortion clinics adhere to the law, they’ll be buried by legal fees and subpoenas and compelled to betray confidences to people who wish

While a rapist can’t sue a provider for aborting the product of his assault, anyone else can—the rapist’s frat brother, for instance. And while the law makes exceptions for “medical emergencies,” providers must detail the emergency in the patient’s medical records, which the providers must then turn over in discovery to whoever filed lawsuits: jealous exes, abusive

their patients ill. Women who seek abortions will expose their friends to financial liability. Abortion providers have already begun canceling procedures. Those with means will travel to obtain abortions; clinics in Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, and New Mexico have been inundated with calls from Texas. Those without will either be forced to give birth in a state with one of the worst child-welfare rankings in the country or try to handle things themselves. (Right now, 90,000 grown-ups are ingesting horse dewormers to cure a viral infection because of something they saw on Facebook. How well do you think desperate teenagers Googling for DIY-abortion tips will work out?) The court’s ruling holds open the possibility

of revisiting SB 8 once providers have targets to sue, and maybe that will happen. But the justices showed their hand. They weren’t hoodwinked by Texas’s cleverness. They believe women have no right to make their own reproductive choices. Everything else is window dressing. Indeed, the decision brought into sharp relief that support for abortion rights and opposition to expanding the Supreme Court are mutually exclusive. So far, however, President Biden and other Democratic leaders haven’t squared that circle. Maybe they should follow the majority’s reasoning to its natural (and terrifying) conclusion. Under the justices’ logic, there’s nothing now stopping Texas or any other legislature from—as Sotomayor put it—“outsourcing the enforcement of unconstitutional laws” to ban pharmacies from selling birth control, prohibit companies from advertising in newspapers that criticize politicians, or bar contractors from building mosques. The ruling goes exactly—and only—as far as the justices’ political beliefs, not the law or the Constitution, will take it. Think about it from the other direction. As Slate’s Mark Joseph Stern writes, “If California outlawed handguns by allowing strangers to sue anyone who ‘aids and abets’ their purchase, does anyone seriously believe the ultraconservative justices … would shrug and say ‘too bad, there’s absolutely nothing SCOTUS can do!’” In one paragraph, the court’s majority— secured by Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell, but the culmination of a generation-long conservative project to overtake the federal judiciary—left no doubt that it will be a political creature, functioning as an arm of a far-right movement driven by cultural grievances and dismissive of democratic norms. Nine months ago, congressional Republicans tried to overturn a presidential election based on obvious lies that sparked a deadly riot. Republican legislatures have since turned those lies into widespread restrictions on voting rights, while also passing laws targeting the right to protest and demanding that schools whitewash racial history. Now women’s autonomy is on the chopping block. The Supreme Court won’t serve as a bulwark against this rising authoritarian tide; if anything, it will encourage it. This is the game now. Democrats need to start playing. To be fair to Biden, selling his party’s moderates on court-packing will be a sisyphean task. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a fight worth having. The court’s actions demand an acknowledgment that preserving institutional traditions matters less than protecting the rights the institution is trampling. ‘Edward Scissorhands’ House in Lutz is now a free museum. By Colin Wolf

ore than 30 years after Tim Burton shot his goth classic “Edward Scissorhands” in Tampa Bay, the fictional Bogg Family house in Lutz has been transformed into a museum. “Google sends people straight from Disney here, I mean it’s crazy,” Joey Licalzi, who bought the home for $230,000 with his wife Sharon almost a year ago, tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. Located at 1774 Tinsmith Cir., the Licalzis say it was fate that they ended up winning the bid, especially after they recently lost out on a house across the street, and the fact that Joey worked on the set of the film as a dishwasher. “After TMZ wrote about it, we went up against probably 200 bids on the house,” says Licalzi, who also owns a drum manufacturing company. “When you battle the whole planet for the house, you can’t Airbnb it like everybody thinks you can, so we turned it into a free museum. Now everybody has access to come on the property.” Licalzi says some people make appointments, but a lot of times they just come and knock on the door. As of now, Licalzi estimates that he gets about 30 families a week coming to visit his museum, which he and his wife also live

in. “Yeah, we live in the Edward Scissorhands Museum. It is totally bizarre,” he jokes. The museum features original props from the film like Kim Bogg’s purse, original wallpaper, and the scissors Edward used to trim the dinosaur hedge. Currently there are six exhibits, and Licalzi says he plans to expand, eventually turning his garage into the top floor of the castle featured in the film. “It’s crazy,’’ says Licalzi. “We bought a running theme park with a worldwide following for $230,000.” So far, most of Licalzi’s neighbors seem to appreciate the new attraction, but not everyone is on board. “You know, a majority of them, they come up here and they come on the property and they shake my hand and says ‘thank you, thank you, thank you,’” says Licalzi. “ Licalzi says he hasn’t heard from Tim Burton or Johnny Depp, but actor Robert Oliveri, who played Kevin Boggs in the film, did reach out to say congratulations. “It’s only going to get bigger,” says Licalzi. “We do tours day and night, and in the wintertime you can come and watch the movie on the property and it’s free.” See more photos of the home via cltampa.com/magazine.

he Tampa Bay Bucs take on the Dallas Cowboys Thursday at Raymond James Stadium for the NFL’s first game of the 2021-2022 regular season. While the Bucs are at full-strength (and at the ever-important 100% vaccination rate), the Cowboys will be without All-Pro right guard Zack Martin, who tested positive for the coronavirus and is on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Martin is vaccinated, so he is able to return to play five days after testing negative twice and showing no symptoms over the five days, but because of when his positive test came in it won’t be in time for Thursday’s game. What does this mean for the Bucs defensively? A much easier time stopping the run. Martin is the best guard in the NFL, and he blocks for one of the most explosive running backs in the NFL, Ezekiel Elliott, but without Martin leading the way, the Bucs and their number one rush defense will have a much easier time containing the former Ohio State Buckeye. Plus, without Martin anchoring the interior line, perhaps Vita Vea and Ndamokung Suh can even get in on the pass rushing fun usually reserved for JPP and Shaq Barrett. As for the other side of the ball, the Bucs should have an easy time offensively. It is the first game of the regular season, so don’t be shocked if they get off to a slow start, but with how inexperienced and weak the Cowboys are at every level defensively, Brady should have no problem picking apart Dallas’ secondary. The Bucs should win this game fairly easily, 35-24. They have the offensive firepower to score a lot against the Cowboys, and their defense should be able to hold up enough to pull this one out.

With all of that being said, this is still the NFL, and anything can happen (“any given Sunday” and all that shit). The Bucs could very easily lose this game, because as bad as the Cowboys are defensively, they’re just as good offensively. They, too, have three elite receivers in Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup, as well as a good offensive line (even without Martin) and Elliott taking handoffs from Dak Prescott, who’s out to prove he’s deserving of that huge contract extension he received this offseason. So don’t be disappointed if the Bucs lose. It’s just one game in what will be a very long, very up-and-down season. Strap in, and hold on tight for this Super Bowl precision, too. The Bucs will go back to the Super Bowl. It will be a rematch between them and the Kansas City Chiefs. They will unfortunately lose to the Chiefs. Now, I predicted the Bucs would lose to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl last year, too, and they proved me very wrong (as they thankfully did many times during the course of last season), but this year’s Chiefs team is a little different than last year’s. Kansas City traded for former Ravens tackle Orlando Brown, Jr. Brown is considered by most to be one of the most talented young tackles in the NFL, and to add to what was a quietly productive offseason, the Chiefs had a very underrated draft, snagging some depth for their O-line in center Creed Humphrey and adding the talented linebacker Nick Bolton out of Missouri to help shore up the second level of that defense. However, injuries happen, so I could be eating my words come Feb. 13 when we could watch Tom Brady lift his 8th Lombardi Trophy.

By spring 2020, Wave, whose real name is Rodarius Marcell Green, was supposed to wrap his 22-date U.S. tour at Jannus Live, a 4.5-mile drive from his old stomping grounds at Lakewood High School. That concert was postponed in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic that’s brought the touring industry to its knees, but Wave keeps rising and is headlining the biggest venue in Tampa Bay. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) mid-2019 revenue report said streaming music accounted for 80% of total industry revenues, which rose 18% to $5.4 billion. Dear Oracle, I am caught between worlds at the moment, waiting to find out what my future will hold, and it all rests on the shoulders of some arbitrary decisions made by arbitrary people. In what ways can I maintain confidence and faith without being super let down in case things don’t work out?—Monkey in the Middle Cards: The Seeker, The Full Moon, The King of Wands reversed Dear Monkey, in my deck (Pagan Otherworlds by Uusi), there is a new Major Arcana card: The Seeker. The image is based on the Flammarion engraving and shows a seeker with a torch breaking through the veil of earth and emerging into the cosmos—literally caught between two worlds. But it’s in this liminal space that we’re able to see the light of spiritual knowledge. This is a card for encountering The Divine, however you define it. With The Seeker and The Full Moon (clarity, energy, being fully present), I think you can maintain your faith and your confidence by mindfully tending to your soul. In Gnosticism, there’s a sensation called “pneuma,” which is a holy sensation of connecting to The Divine through knowledge. It’s a fleeting moment, but it’s probably one you’ve felt before. It’s that feeling when you read something, and it describes something you’ve always known without knowing, or when you listen to a piece of music and everything in the world sort of clicks into place, and you feel sublime. It’s a tiny, temporary moment of transcendence, and it makes you feel fully alive. So what makes you feel alive as a person? What brings joy and calm and a feeling of being connected? Is it taking a bike ride at dawn? Getting lost in playing music? Sex? Make a list, a literal list, of these things and refer to it when these arbitrary bastards are getting you down. The King of Wands is a natural leader with a great internal compass. You know what rings your bell. Regardless of what decisions these people make, you can still follow your path. It might be more twisty than you imagined, but you’ve got to have faith in the process. You know where you are going.

thoughts and research what kind of career you could see for yourself. Also, regardless of your chosen profession, if you’re an artist, you’re an artist. That’s your vocation. You aren’t less of an artist if you have a day job. All it means is you have to be more creative with scheduling. You got this!

Women still have a constitutional right to an abortion in the United States, but abortion is effectively illegal now in Texas and will be soon in other states, as GOP legislators and governors drive a truck through the hole the Supreme Court just ripped open in Roe v. Wade. My advice to women and men in Texas: stock up on morning after pills—available over the counter (for now)—and vote every last GOP motherfucker out of office.
