t’s not hyperbole to say that the efforts of the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) gave U.S. rock clubs a chance to survive when it successfully lobbied and got passage for the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant. And while approvals for those grants have been frighteningly slow to roll out, it was heartwarming to see several NIVA founders in Ybor City to join the organization’s Florida captain, Tom DeGeorge, over the weekend. How I got a weed card and calmed my anxiety. By Steve Miller I was taking. In my youthful exuberance, I consistently overindulged. If every time you drank liquor, you drank the entire bottle of Jagermeister, you would probably think that maybe drinking wasn’t for you. That is precisely the mistake I was repeatedly making. One brownie makes me feel good; two will make me feel great! Uh oh, time no longer has meaning, and I am losing track of my own being as it melts into the great ether that is this universe. Eventually, I turned my back on marijuana, convinced that it was simply “not for me.” Years went by, I quit drinking alcohol, and my low-level anxiety issues blossomed into a full-blown panic disorder. I went to a psychiatrist, focused on meditation, changed my diet, and tried various other distractions. Some were effective, others not so much. If anyone wants a stack of adult color books and coloring pencils, have I got a deal for you. After a couple of years, things began to normalize. I stopped renewing my Xanax prescriptions and was seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. But as anyone that has ever suffered from anxiety knows, it will rear its head again at unexpected times and in unexpected ways. When these times would come, I had more tools to deal with it, but I would still find myself white-knuckling my way through too many days. That is when I began exploring cannabis and CBD for relief. I had doubts; I mean, I have anxiety, that kind of comes with the territory. If you show me a good idea, I will find the flaw. It’s a real treat. So I began what I was sure would be a journey through red tape, high prices, and bureaucratic delays. I booked my appointment with a doctor through Doc MJ—a Clearwater-based company with 29 locations across Florida. Jackie Rothman, COO of Doc MJ, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that her company has processed more than 86,000 medical cannabis patients statewide in the last four years. One of their operators gave me a call and talked me through the entire process. He was knowledgeable and friendly. We spoke on a Friday,

he parking lot of a Widespread Panic show, public parks, street corners, I have bought cannabis in many places. The one thing those transactions all had in common was that they were never legal. Years ago, I smoked a lot, and I never got the allure of medical marijuana. Sure, I knew it had real tangible medical benefits. However, I never understood why we were all pretending that marijuana was still some big, bad, scary evil. I also assumed medical marijuana would be an overpriced inconvenience that would be a bigger hassle than making small talk with a chatty dealer. I was squarely in the recreational legalization camp, hoping we could just skip the whole medical “charade.” Years ago, I also used to think I would run a marathon, so needless to say, my “years ago” viewpoints left a lot to be desired. Any significant cultural shift takes time, and cannabis acceptance is no different. Generations of “Reefer Madness” propaganda needed to be undone so the cloistered citizens of the moral majority don’t get their cancel culture-fearing, healthcare-withholding sensibilities in a bunch. The good news is that the perception of marijuana as a society-eroding evil has fallen rapidly. Over two-thirds of the American public are now pro-legalization, increasing more than 100% since 1969. The Florida Supreme Court even had to block voters from chiming in on whether to legalize recreational adult use of marijuana in 2022. This increased public acceptance of cannabis is mirrored by its legal status. There are only two states that still have full prohibition. I’m looking at you, Idaho and Nebraska. In the higher 48 states, marijuana is either medically or entirely legal. As the public perception of marijuana started to shift towards legalization, my own habits had me moving away from cannabis. After a couple of bad experiences with edibles where I managed to get high enough to punch a hole into the space-time continuum, I thought that maybe marijuana wasn’t for me. Pre-medical marijuana, I didn’t know the dosage of anything

Immediately I was encouraged. They got me in faster than my general practitioner ever has. The day of my appointment came, and the experience was streamlined to perfection. My appointment time was 3:30 p.m., and I saw the doctor by 3:35 p.m.—unheard of! No waiting room after the waiting room, no long delay. We talked for a bit about my experiences with anxiety and past treatments. He offered suggestions, answered my questions, and provided me with a bevy of information. I was out before 4 p.m. I finalized the process online at home, sent the state their money, and waited. A week later, I got an email with my approval and my ID card, which meant I could go to the dispensary. Out of sheer excitement, I drove to the closest dispensary. It was a Curaleaf location. First things first, there was a buy-one-get-one special. You guys, there are specials. BOGO marijuana, it was enough to make my 19-year-old self tear up. You know those really great bartenders or
sommeliers that listen enthusiastically to what you like and patiently guide you through the options to make sure that you get what you are looking for? Yeah, that was the type of guy that worked with me. We talked for a while, and I walked out with a couple Indica vape cartridges, a battery to use them with, and some fast-acting hybrid edibles with exact dosages. Armed with these products and guidance, I was able to enjoy marijuana without having to question my existence in this universe. Medical marijuana has far exceeded my hopes. Finally, I know what works for me. I know exactly how much to take, and I can manage my anxiety effectively without needing any pills. Sure there are side effects, the Grateful Dead makes more sense to me than ever before, but nothing good comes without a few side effects. Recreational marijuana legalization seems like an inevitability, but I will be saying mea culpas for my short-sightedness between taking puffs of Orange Kush Cake until then.

Six stories from the last year in marijuana legislation. By Ray Roa

t’s no secret that 2021 has been a busy year for anyone watching the Florida State Legislature as it debates and passes legislation related to cannabis—from the consumption of it to the sentences of those who get caught with it. The gubernatorial race will be marked by the candidate stances on weed laws, and as our new marijuana columnist points out, folks as square as your mom and dad are out there getting medical cards. But the ruling focused on wording in the proposed ballot summary, which voters would see when they go to the polls.—Jim Saunders May Florida Supreme Court rejects challenge to medical-marijuana law from Tampa’s Florigrown Siding with the state in a closely watched case that has kept the cannabis industry in limbo, the Florida Supreme Court upheld a 2017 law designed to carry out a constitutional amendment that broadly legalized medical marijuana. The court’s 42-page ruling came in a drawn-out legal battle launched by Tampa-based Florigrown LLC, which, in part, challenged the state’s system of requiring licensed medical-marijuana operators to handle all aspects of the cannabis business, including, growing, processing, distributing and selling products. The challenge argued that the state law ran afoul of the 2016 constitutional amendment. Lower courts sided with Florigrown and, in a rare move, the Supreme Court ordered two sets of arguments in the case. But this 6-1 decision found that Florigrown, owned in part by prominent Tampa strip-club operator Joe Redner, “has not demonstrated a substantial likelihood of success on the merits of any of its constitutional claims.” —Dara Kam

July Trump-appointed judge blocks new Florida law limiting contribution limits for ballot initiatives Delivering a second punch to the Florida Legislature, U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor blocked a new law that would cap contributions to political committees backing ballot initiatives, saying the law runs afoul of the First Amendment. The contribution cap was the latest salvo in Republican lawmakers’ long-running effort to make it more difficult for committees to pass proposed constitutional amendments. It also came after voters passed constitutional amendments in recent years on issues such as legalizing medical marijuana and raising the minimum wage—both largely bankrolled by wealthy Orlando lawyer John Morgan.—Dara Kam June Florida Supreme Court rejects recreational marijuana amendment again For the second time in two months, the Florida Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at allowing people to use recreational marijuana. Justices, in a 5-2 decision, said a proposal by the political committee Sensible Florida included ballot wording that would mislead voters. By the same margin, the court in April rejected a recreational-pot proposal by the committee Make It Legal Florida. During arguments in February 2020, justices appeared skeptical of the Sensible Florida proposal, which drew opposition from Attorney General Ashley Moody, the state House and groups such as the Florida Chamber of Commerce. The proposed amendment was framed as regulating marijuana similar to

Ron DeSantis says marijuana may be too strong Florida’s Governor suggested today’s medical marijuana may be too strong, with rhetoric seemingly bolstering a proposal currently in the Legislature. Gov. Ron DeSantis told reporters that today’s cannabis hits different than the more innocent variants of bygone times. “If you look at some of the stuff that’s now coming down, there’s a lot of really bad things in it. It’s not necessarily what you would’ve had 30 years ago when someone’s in college and they’re doing something. You have some really, really bad stuff in there, so I think having the ability to identify that, I think, that’s safety and quite frankly when you get into some of that stuff, it’s not medicinal at that point for sure,” DeSantis said, in response to a reporters’ question.—A.G. Gancarski Nikki Fried says Florida GOP-proposed THC caps would “tax” patients, marijuana industry Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services blasted a Republican bill to cap the THC content in medical cannabis. Commissioner Nikki Fried, a first-term Democrat, inveighed against a measure filed last week in the House by Rep. Spencer Roach that would cap flower at 10% THC, edibles at 15%, and concentrates at 60%. “This would be a huge hit to the industry and the patients,” Fried told reporters. Roach was appointed to a statewide drug policy group by House Speaker Chris Sprowls, an indication that the House is ready to pass
THC caps yet again, as it has before. Fried, a proponent of medical cannabis and a potential 2022 challenger to Gov. Ron DeSantis, whose position on caps is unknown, pointed out that “71% of Floridians voted for medical marijuana in the Florida Constitution.” Fried said that people should be “very worried” about the THC caps, noting that the leadership in the House and Senate are entertaining arguments.—A.G. Gancarski January Florida lawmaker files bill to repeal mandatory minimum drug sentences State Rep. Anna V. Eskamani, D-Orlando, filed a bill to remove mandatory minimum sentence for non-violent drug offenders (HB 6029) in the Florida House. Eskamani aimed for the bill to be a step toward deterring drug-related crimes with rehabilitation programs and drug courts instead of draconian sentencing. This was Eskamani’s second attempt to pass these reforms, as the last repeal died in the Criminal Justice Subcommittee in March of 2020. The 2021 version also died in the same subcommittee last April. Mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines have not always been the letter of the law in Florida. Prior to the 1983 Florida Sentencing Guidelines, Florida judges had more freedom in sentencing. The guidelines provided judges with a point system that would tally up a person’s past and present offenses. This left judges to choose sentencing based on a suggested range, depending on the number of points an offender had.—Melissa Perez-Carrillo

10-YEAR-PLAN: Students say an RFI for developing the USF Forest Preserve does not align with a sustainability plan from university president Steve Currall.

USF student government to consider stepping into forest preserve battle. By Justin Garcia
O
n Monday, a resolution written by University of South Florida students, faculty and environmental activists went to the floor of the USF Student Government Senate. The goal of the resolution is to officially bring the student government into the struggle to Save the USF Forest Preserve (USFFP). It also demands that a conservation easement be established on the preserve, which would protect the land from any future development or speculation for development. The resolution document was shared with Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. After the reading of the resolution on Monday, the formal review process begins, and it may take up to two weeks for USF’s Student Government Senate to vote (see cltampa.com/ news for the most updated information). The authors of the resolution claim that USF’s leadership violated a number of the university’s own guidelines and plans for
sustainability when it released a Request For Information (RFI) to developers back in April. The students claim that the RFI is not aligned with the policies of the 2015-2025 Campus Master Plan' Section 4, which outlines a clear no-development policy for the preserve. The authors also claim that the RFI is not aligned with the institutional core commitment of sustainability outlined in USF President Steve Currall’s “10year blueprint for a bold future.” Exploring development, the resolution claims, goes against the City of Tampa’s “Resilient Tampa roadmap,” unveiled on May 27, 2021, which states that the city has obligations to remedy the unplanned growth in the USF area, protect the health of the Tampa Bay Watershed, protect and preserve existing natural systems. These protections are expected to help preserve a sustainable tree canopy and urban forest that maximizes air quality, energy

savings, carbon sequestration, and other healthy ecosystem benefits. The USF students’ resolution goes on to discuss the environmental and educational importance of the preserve and the endangered animal and plant species that live there. It also references the recent passing of The Wildlife Corridor Act, which recognizes the importance of a state-wide network of wildlife corridors (such as the USFFP) and orders the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to preserve such areas. USFFP also contains at least nine documented archaeological sites, including an Indigenous cemetery. The resolutions authors call for the protection of the area, which has experienced looting in the past and recently again, after USF’s RFI was released. Adam Freeman, Director of Media Relations for USF, acknowledged the concerns for the environmental and cultural importance of the preserve. “Any potential project related to the RFI for the USF golf course and forest preserve would have to fall within applicable restrictions for the development of the property and must consider options for mitigation, protecting wildlife and preserving unique natural features
of the property to eliminate or minimize any environmental impacts,” Freeman wrote in an email to CL. But Freeman added that even if the USF Government Senate passes a resolution, “it would not require any action by the university.” He directed CL to the RFI and campus master plan to see where these protections are addressed, but the language in the documents is vague. CL asked for more specifics and any USF documents or guidelines that show how exactly the preserve is protected and will update this post online with any new information. In May, the USF Faculty Senate voted 54-3 to permanently protect the preserve. Over 21,000 people have signed a change.org petition to save the preserve, and the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to request that the university preserve the land. The authors of the resolution include USF PhD candidates and faculty, along with an array of local environmental groups including Tampa Audubon Society, Center for Biological Diversity, Florida Wildlife Federation, Florida Native Plant Society Suncoast Chapter, the Tampa Bay Butterfly Foundation, Florida Indigenous Alliance and Florida Indigenous Rights and Environmental Equality.

How to kill a planet

I
t was 115 degrees in Portland last Monday, the highest temperature ever recorded at the city’s airport. In Seattle, the mercury hit 108, more than 40 degrees above “normal”—a baseline the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently redefined to account for hotter conditions—and the highest temperature ever recorded there, too. By Thursday, hundreds of deaths in Canada and the Pacific Northwest had been linked to the early-season heat wave, which meteorologists attributed to a stalled high-pressure ridge. But this was less a freak event than a foreshadowing of the near-future. In 2020, the global average temperature was about 1.84 degrees Fahrenheit above the average from 1951–1980, tying last year with 2016 for the hottest on record, according to NASA. The trend is more important than the data point: 19 of the hottest 20 years since record-keeping began in 1880 took place between 2000 and 2020. The higher the average temperature, the more likely extreme events become. Between 1990 and 2010, Seattle had one day where the mean temperature was 20 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. Since 2015, it’s seen 10. It’s not just heat waves but also hurricanes (on Thursday, Tropical Storm Elsa became the fastest E-named storm to ever form in the Atlantic), droughts (much of the western U.S. is currently experiencing extreme drought conditions), and wildfires (in 2020, wildfires killed at least 31 people and consumed more than 4 million acres in California). The West is getting hotter and drier, which will decimate agriculture and strain water resources. Even in a dry heat—a factor that probably curtailed the death toll in the Pacific Northwest last week—extreme temperatures will be catastrophic. The East, Southeast and Midwest face a different kind of danger. When it gets hot, people sweat, which cools the skin as it evaporates, preventing the body from overheating. But when extreme heat comes with extreme humidity, the sweat no longer evaporates. At a certain point, even healthy, well-hydrated people overheat and die. We know what that point is: sustained exposure to a wet-bulb temperature—a measure combining relative humidity and air temperature—of about 95 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s not unfathomable. A 103-degree temperature with 75% humidity would do it. Scientists expected parts of eastern China, the Indian subcontinent, and the Persian Gulf to hit
the limit of human survivability toward the end of the century. But last year, a study in the journal Science Advances found that places in South Asia, the coastal Middle East, and the Southwest U.S. had already eclipsed that threshold for an hour or two. The southeastern U.S.—parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, North Carolina, and the Florida Panhandle—has reached or exceeded a wet-bulb temperature of 88 degrees on multiple occasions. (For context, the heat wave that killed more than 700 people in Chicago in 1995 had a wet-bulb temperature of 85 degrees.) If trends continue, in 20 or 30 years, the Southeast will see weeks of deadly humid heat every summer, likely killing tens of thousands of people a year. Those on the lower rungs of the socioeconomic ladder—the poor and racial minorities—will bear the brunt of the carnage. Conditions will be far worse in countries that lack the infrastructure to shield their citizens. The more the planet heats, the worse it will get. The potential second-and third-order effects are almost unfathomable: Mass migration. Food and water shortages. Societal unrest. Economic collapse. Political radicalization. Wars. This isn’t

‘Yeah, we kind of know that.’ But it gives us a talking point.” All of the Democrats McCoy named are part of the bipartisan group that turned Biden’s $2 trillion infrastructure proposal into a $579 billion infrastructure compromise that omitted a mandate for power companies to eventually eliminate carbon emissions as well as billions of dollars in green energy incentives. Instead, it throws a few bucks at public transit and electric vehicles and sets aside $47 billion to help communities mitigate the future climate catastrophes—including deadly heat waves—we’ve accepted as an inevitable consequence of padding ExxonMobil shareholders’ portfolios. Senate Dems swear they’ll throw those other things into the all-encompassing reconciliation bill—which will propose taxing rich people and corporations but not carbon emissions. But as with everything, they’ll end up at the mercy of coal-lover Joe Manchin, who shot up climate legislation in a campaign ad. Our democracy has been broken by authoritarianism, our political system paralyzed by cowardice. If nothing changes, and we remain unable to meet our existential challenge, the apocalypse won’t require a planet-killing asteroid strike. We’ll just watch the world burn. espite a Google listing that says “permanently closed,” downtown St. Petersburg’s Coney Island Sandwich Shop’s owner says the iconic restaurant hopes to reopen “sometime soon.” At least that’s what 85-year-old Hank Barlas—whose father opened what was thencalled Coney Island Grill back in 1926—told the Tampa Bay Times. Barlas closed his restaurant in response to the pandemic and has yet to open back up. Hot chicken favorite King of the Coop will open South Tampa location, appear on Food Network’s ‘Food Paradise’ Tampa-based Nashville hot chicken chain King of the Coop is expanding with a new takeout-only location in South Tampa. Last week during a taping for “Food Paradise,” Coop founder Joe Dodd told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that the 1,000 square-foot location is eying a Sept. 1 opening at 500 S Howard Ave. Dodd said the location will be open for lunch and dinner, much like other SoHo walk up restaurants, and stay open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Dodd said previously announced King of the Coop locations in Ybor City and Westchase are moving forward. Together with investors in his Taste Buddz company, Dodd first opened King of the Coop in Seminole Heights back in 2019 after a short stint inside a stall at Tampa Armature Works.During downtime at Wednesday’s filming, Dodd was flanked by Sam Ochstein and Westshore Pizza CEO Travis Masters—his partners in King of the Coop’s Westchase and South Tampa locations. Dodd, his Taste Buddz partners, along with Masters and Ochstein plan to open more locations in a move to grow King of the Coop into a Tampa-born chain that retains the local, down home feel of the Seminole Heights location. When the South Tampa location opens it’ll be the third King of the Coop restaurant in the Bay area, including the flagship Seminole
Heights location as well as the Wesley Chapel location where Cooking Channel was filming on Wednesday.

Fringe Review: First Look A Local Artist Makes Good.
Question: What do “Daredevil,” “The Legend of Korra,” “Kim Possible,” “Spider-Man,” and “Scott Pilgrim” have in common? Answer: Airtight Theatre’s latest, award winning show, The Sack: A Play on Superheroes. Another Tampa Fringe veteran, Jordan Bertke (Artistic Director, Airtight Theatre) is no stranger to producing great work on the fringe, and The Sack is no exception. Winner of Best Solo Comedy Show at this year’s Orlando Fringe, Bertke’s new comedy is a one man tour de force. A relatively new voice on Tampa stages, Bertke is nonetheless an artist to watch, with hit shows appearing in fringe after fringe. His work is comical and light, like an episode of Friends or Charles in Charge. Despite being young, Bertke is very good at what he does. You’d never guess the creator of such well seasoned comedy was a recent graduate just dipping his toes in the water, but that is one of

the gifts of fringe, allowing new and emerging artists to gain notoriety in a market they might otherwise be priced out of. Bertke has taken on Tampa audiences and delivered, selling out shows and scooping up awards while satisfying audience members and critics alike. This is a true fringe success story if there ever was one. Bertke’s shows aren’t deeply dramatic works of High Art, just a virtually guaranteed good time. Sack: A Play on Superheroes, will also be at HCC Ybor as part of the Tampa International Fringe Festival, running July 29 - August 8 at HCC Ybor!
Veteran Entertainer Turns Fringely
It’s no secret; fringe can be a grab-bag. With shows chosen at random, audiences never know what they’re going to get. Sometimes, it’s a trainwreck, and sometimes it’s an absolute riot, and nowhere is that more true than on stage during one of Scott Swenson’s shows. WIT Improv veteran and long time consultant to theme parks and corporations alike. Swenson takes his one-man improv style to the stage like a bull in a china shop (or a bal-
lerina in a butchery). Every show is a different experience, as attested to by the many repeat audience members at the 2019 Tampa Fringe, where he won a Venue Choice award, and was one of the top grossing shows of the fest. Like fringe in general, improv can be sublime or average (to be kind), and Swenson’s work epitomizes this; his playful interactive style guiding the audience through silly scenarios and wacky wordplay, but always delivering a memorable performance. A sequel to his award winning rst show, Preach! 2 is sure to charm and delight as much as Preach! did, while embodying everything we love about the fringe. In Swenson’s own words, “Fringe is the incubator (or perhaps gateway drug) for new and creative live performance. [. . .] Everyone should let go of their expectations and jump into the ‘bubbling artistic soup’ that is Tampa Fringe!” Preach! 2: The Second Coming, will be one of many shows at the Tampa International Fringe Festival, running July 29 - August 8 at HCC Ybor! ove over Vincent, it’s Pablo’s turn to show some work at the Dalí because “Picasso and the Allure of the South” is headed to the St. Petersburg museum early next year. Starting Jan. 29, over 70 of Pablo Picasso’s paintings, drawings and collages—many never seen in the U.S. before—will be on exhibit until May 22. “In partnership with the incomparable Musée national Picasso-Paris, The Dalí is proud to share this far-reaching exploration of the gravitational pull of southern Europe,” Dr. Hank Hine, The Dali’s Executive Director, wrote in a release. In addition to the art, a selection of historical photographs will give viewers a glimpse into the life of the cubist/surrealist/expressionist Spanish painter and sculptor. The Dalí—located at 1 Dalí Blvd. in downtown St. Pete—is the only venue where these pieces will be shown outside of their home in Paris. Tampa’s Outcast Theatre to premiere play about Uganda LGBTQ activist David Okello Outcast Theatre Collective’s latest production –“Dionysus on the Down Low”–is coming to Tampa’s Stageworks Theatre, for one weekend only. The play centers around Uganda LGBTQ activist David Okello—played by Best of the Bay winning actor Theron (T.R.) Butler—who is forced to flee his country because of a possible anti-homosexuality law. Okello takes shelter in Boston with another activist Matthew Teitman– played by Jonathan O’Brien . Expect some “personal, political, and sexual tensions” while the two main characters grapple to coexist and “find common ground.” A press release says the July 22-25 performances mark the world premiere of the play, written by Michael Proft—a graduate of NYU’s
Comedian Joe Rogan brings new tour to Tampa this summer After a year’s delay, Joe Rogan is coming to Tampa. The comic and podcaster will perform “The Sacred Clown” tour at Tampa’s Amalie Arena Aug. 27. Tickets start at $35.75 on the Amalie Arena website. His show begins at 8 p.m. Rogan’s other Florida stops include Orlando’s Amway Center Aug. 28 and the BB&T Center in Sunrise on Aug. 26. “The Joe Rogan Experience” is the most popular podcast worldwide with over 190 million monthly downloads. From talks about weed and DMT to interviews with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Rogan has range. He also adds some punching commentary for the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). But while colorful, his comedy is also controversial. Most recently, he took heat for questioning why young, healthy people would get vaccinated in April. SOUNDS GOOD: ‘Musicien’ by Pablo Picasso, headed to St. Pete in 2022. The tour includes, “new material that blends sidesplitting comedy with thought-provoking social commentary,” says a press release from North American Entertainment Group Inc., which is producing the tour. Williams, who’s comedic style is over the top and sometimes polarizing, is also an activist, actor and rapper who doesn’t hold back from weighing in with his personal politics. In early June, when asked on the Joe Budden podcast about how comedians can be comedians in the midst of “cancel culture,” Williams replied that the situation shouldn’t affect comedians who are actually funny. “Some of these things are for the benefit of everything. Nobody likes the speed limit, but it’s necessary. Nobody likes the shoulder of the road, but it’s there for a reason,” Williams said. “My point is, [people] weren’t all that extremely
funny back when they could say whatever they wanted to say. At the end of the day, there’s no cancel culture. Cancelation doesn’t have its own culture.” Williams’ career has spanned over 20 years. He has developed a style of standup that highlights cutting dialogue, rooted in conversations reflecting the American political landscape. In 2018, Williams hosted his Netflix comedy special, “Katt Williams: Great America,” in Jacksonville, where he spent the opening of the special making fun of the city for its crime and the design of the city. That same year, Williams earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his guest role in “Atlanta” on FX. Local dome home with ‘Warlock’ ties now for sale.
A
rguably one of the safest homes in Tampa Bay is now on the market in Wesley Chapel. Located at 25910 Queen Sago Pl., this concrete dome home was built in 1982 by David Van Dercar, son of famous artist and self-proclaimed wizard Lewis Van Dercar, who bought the original 16-acre plot of land back in 1973 to build a similar style home now known as the famous “Warlock House.” This particular dome home is just down the street from the original Warlock compound, and, like his father’s concrete dome home, it was built with 8-inch thick 4,000 psi concrete, and sits on 4.52-acre plot that was specifically chosen in order to avoid potential missile strikes. The 3,000-square-foot house comes with two-bedrooms and two-bathrooms, and is basically a survivalist’s dream. The home features a master bedroom that doubles as a panic room (with a bulletproof picture window and steel door), a bunker, a self-contained well water source, a 10-foot deep pond stocked with fish, and a hot tub.
Lewis Van Dercar, who died in 1988, described himself as a “creator” and some called him crazy, reads his obituary in the Miami Herald. “He called himself, in turn, a warlock; Magus Supreme, pro tem of the Supreme Order of Magi; and someone with mysterious powers, specifically ESP and the power to levitate,” said the Herald. “He hinted about incarnations and said an alien entered his body as a young man. He said he had a pet poltergeist, then tried to sell it through a classified ad.” In 1982, the Sun Sentinel ran an exceptional profile on Van Dercar, seriously read it, calling him the “Wizard of Zephyrhills,” and described in detail his bohemian lifestyle and the rumors that it often created. The current asking price for this dome home is $500,000, and the listing agents are Molly Nye and Anthony Grampietro of Century 21 Bill Nye Realty. When Dan gets drafted (another nice touch is that anyone whose actual death date falls prior to the date in the future that they are jumping to is immediately enlisted), that’s when “The Tomorrow War” kicks into highgear, action-wise, and the next two hours are just pure white-knuckle thrills. McKay, the director, does a stellar job teasing out the appearance of the aliens. Newly drafted soldiers aren’t even shown a photo of what they will be fighting because most would avoid the draft if they saw before they jumped. Best of all, the build-up has a payoff. The aliens themselves are terrifying, and original, like a hybrid between a Demogorgon from “Stranger Things” and a Thark from Edgar Rice Burrough’s “John Carter” series. They’re also difficult as crap to kill. The actual time-travel-portal gimmick is perfectly rendered and distinct enough to
separate “The Tomorrow War” from other sci-fi films. The humor is subtle, but effective, with both Pratt and Sam Richardson getting the best lines. And, of course, there’s a twist packaged in the form of Yvonne Strahovski, as the leader of the failing resistance fighters, and it’s a doozy that allows both her and Pratt some really nice acting moments throughout the film. Some people may see my 4.5-star review and think I’ve gone mad. But here’s the deal: This is as good, if not better, than almost every movie you’ve seen in the past couple of years. Yes, it has moments of pure cheesy schmaltz (don’t even get me started on the unnecessary voiceover at the end), but it’s no different than the cheesy schmaltz served up by Michael Bay or James Cameron, and it works in the context that such moments are presented here.

We’re talking next-level good from story to script to an escalating series of insane action sequences and finally to some of the best CGI you’ve ever seen this side of “Jurassic Park.” It’s a stunning achievement when you consider that director Chris McKay previously worked almost exclusively in animation and stop-motion, and writer Zach Dean has only two other screenplays to his credit, both of them mediocre genre thrillers. “The Tomorrow War” is a game-changer as far as the type of big-budget blockbuster films that likely will be released exclusively on a streaming service. And it should scare the piss out of Hollywood. Forget Zack Snyder’s much ballyhooed “Army of the Dead,” which was two-and-a-half hours of subpar suckage and a huge letdown for Netflix. “The Tomorrow War” is the real deal. The only downside is that it legitimately deserves to be seen in a theater on the biggest screen possible, but I was happy as hell to watch it from my couch. In terms of story, “The Tomorrow War” checks all the boxes. Dan Forester (Chris Pratt) is a former military soldier turned high school biology teacher. He yearns for something more, some meaning or sense of accomplishment beyond his life with his wife and daughter, Muri. Dan also has some seriously dark issues with his father (J.K. Simmons). In December 2022, in the middle of a huge sporting event, a portal opens on the field. Soldiers walk out. They claim to be from the future, 28 years to be exact, and they have terrible news: Mankind is losing its grip on existence against an invading, marauding alien species. Bloomingdale High grad blows Miami off the map in Amazon’s ‘Tomorrow War.’ By John W. Allman
F
or all the seemingly improbable yet true headlines that the Sunshine State produces, here’s one most people might not expect to read: Florida man helps save human existence. Yes, it’s true, at least in the movies. When “The Tomorrow War” debuts exclusively on Amazon Prime, fans should be thrilled to discover that Florida plays a pivotal role in the new Chris Pratt sci-fi actioner. Not only is the last bastion of resistance against an invading alien horde located here, but the southern part of the state gets blown to kingdom come by a Tampa native. U.S. Air Force Maj. Joshua “Cabo” Gunderson, who graduated from Bloomingdale High School, appears briefly in “The Tomorrow War,” providing the general public with the first footage ever authorized for release by the military from inside the cockpit of an F-22A Raptor. “Our team travels around the country and around the globe for air shows. We do about 25 events a year,” said Gunderson, who serves as Commander of the 14-member F-22 Demonstration Team, 1st Fighter Wing, which is based out of Langley, Virginia. “This just coincided with one of our events in Fort Lauderdale when we went down for the air show last year.”
Gunderson said the film crew was able to get footage when he and his team arrived by air, as well as shots of the fighter jets taxiing on the tarmac and of the ground crew launching them back out. “We used one of the practice days for the air show, we lined that up with the film crew that was there recording ‘The Tomorrow War,’ and flew alongside the beach and got a bunch of cool shots there, inside the cockpit as well as out from the cockpit.” While Gunderson has yet to see the entire film, he has viewed about 10 minutes of footage focused on the F-22’s, and he laughed when asked about the irony of a Tampa native being shown in a movie bombing Miami as a last-ditch effort to prevent an alien species from eradicating humans altogether. “It was pretty wild to be there filming, pretty surreal to be a part of a movie and have the team be a part of it,” he said, “and to be from Tampa, be in Florida filming for a movie with the F-22 and the demonstration team representing the Air Force was a really cool experience for everyone on the team and for myself. We really enjoyed it.” For those watching at home, Gunderson and his team appear in “The Tomorrow War” at about the 44-minute mark.

Urbane Cowboys brings country-fied cowpunk along with a full band set by songwriter Adam Randall who’s released a shitton of mighty fine Florida folk on Spotify. (Crowbar ,Ybor City) Push Button Press w/Obsidian/DJ Azy/ DJ Acidbitter Ybor City’s darkwave roots show on Friday when post-punk outfit Push Button Press brings what it calls “intelligent lyrics and upfront vocals with pop sensibilities” to a bill where the duo-turned-quartet (which now includes Prescribed Fire’s Shawn Watkins on drums) shares a bill with Wilton Manors’ gothic rock band Obsidian (hopefully playing some of the dark magic from last year’s Vultures EP). DJs Azy and Acidbitter provide goth, darkwave, post punk, and industrial jams throughout the night. A mask is required for entry, and what’s a better way to celebrate surviving the first hurricane of the season than a group dance to Ministry’s “Burning Inside”? (Orpheum, Ybor City) C Seeyousoon w/Bangarang/Nico Sweet My Morning Jacket at the old New World Brewery in 2002. The Black Keys at Skipper’s
Smokehouse in 2005. Seeyousoon at Hooch and Hive on Friday. All those are “I saw them before they were big” shows, and while you can’t travel back in time, you still have a chance to see the South Florida nine-piece (stylized “SEEYOUSOON”) with a few handfuls of people at this top-notch, intimate West River venue. The band is on the rise thanks to an incomparable sound that sprinkles Gen-Z nostalgia into hip-hop—just listen to the insanity of Seeyousoon’s song “Ben Affleck.” Never has something named after the worst Batman sounded so good. The band’s latest single “Faster Please” is in the running for song of the summer, and totally not getting disqualified for marijuana use either. Seeyousoon plays Holland’s Lowlands Festival and Miami’s III points after this all-ages gig (under 18 needs a guardian), so see the band in the club before it’s headlining Jannus or something. Fenley, who spent a decade of his adult life playing honkey tonks before getting to the semifinals on “America’s Got Talent” and cracking the Top 10 on “The Voice”—shows he only tried out for after getting married, which called for him try and reach for Foo Fighters-level income. The 34-year-old singer-songwriter brings his Southern soul sound to a St. Petersburg listening room which should expect originals like “Grandpa (Tell Me About the Good Old Days)” and Fenley’s take on Don Henley’s “Desperado.” (Hideaway Cafe, St. Petersburg) Gruesome w/Intoxicated/Inhuman Condition/Insatanity/Scorch Get your ear plugs and hand-horns ready becasue it’s fucking metal, per usual, at the Brass Mug on Saturday night. Though I was raised in Tampa, aka the Death Metal Capital of the World, and went to a Cannibal Corpse or Eulogy show or two, I am no longer in the metal-know. I had to get help from the Encyclopedia Metallum aka The Metal Archives for this one; the website says Gruesome is from Miami and California and was “born out of guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey and drummer Gus Rios’ mutual involvement” with a Obituary-headlining North American tour called “Death to All.” Bassist Robin Mazen and Daniel Gonzalez fill out the band that has “primitive life” and “cannibalism” themed lyrics. C Liquid Pennies w/Sienna Queen/The Drain Outs/His Hem St. Petersburg psychrock quartet Liquid Pennies takes the best of the late-‘60s and adds a microdose of lightness to its beautifully trippy music (“Camp”), making for a hallucinogenic spritzer of sound that’s modern and nostalgic without overdoing either aesthetic. Indie-rock trio Sienna Queen joins another three-piece—retro surf-rock band the Drain Outs—for this bill featuring harpist, guitarist and songwriter Matt Dodenhoff (aka His Hem) who’s bringing “loud, gay harp music back onstage after a pandemic hiatus. (New World Brewery, Tampa) C Sick Hot album release w/Roxx Revolts and the Velvets/Summer Hoop The members of Tampa’s Sick Hot have to be reincarnated. Have to. It’s the only explanation for the existence of 20-somethings who can pull off a sound and look that’s so…,well, old. The outfit’s 2020 single “Vulture Culture” could get plopped on the soundtrack for “Dazed and Confused,” and no one would argue that it didn’t belong right next to Deep Purple’s 1972 song “Highway Star.” Sick Hot celebrates a new EP at this gig where Blake High grad and former Sick Hot member Summer Hoop rounds out an opening slate that includes glittery, throwback glam-rock from Roxx Revolts and the Velvets—a band that wants to take you to the roller rink in its video for “Supersonica Girl.” (Crowbar, Ybor City)

My son is straight, cute, accomplished, 25, and has friends. He’s never been kissed. I suspect he’s terrified. I can’t talk to him about it. Should his dad talk to him? Should he go to a sex worker? Would this undermine his confidence? Your son has friends and that’s a good sign. Not only does it mean your son has social skills, mom, it means he has people in his life that he can confide in about his sex life and ask for advice. You can and should ask him if there’s anything he would like to talk about—keep those lines of communication open—but it’s entirely possible that your son has no interest in sex (he could be asexual) or that he has an active love and/ or sex life that he doesn’t wanna talk with mom and dad about for reasons, e.g. he’s someone’s rubber gimp or he can only get it up in a fursuit or he’s in a polyamorous triad that he’s not ready to tell you about. If he’s happy, let him be.

Is there a safe way to enlarge a clitoris? Allow me to Google that for you. Hey, turns out there’s a Wikipedia entry for that (“Clitoral Enlargement Methods”), as I suspected there might be, and it lists three methods to grow a clitoris: the use of creams containing testosterone (applied directly to the clit); testosterone supplements (administered by injection); and the use of clitoral pumps, i.e. suction cups. Testosterone injections are the most effective way to enlarge a clit—as any trans man can tell you—but it has other “masculinizing effects” that you may not want. Clitoral pumps, much like penis pumps, can enlarge the clitoris temporarily but overuse or too-enthusiastic use of a pump—on a dick or a clit—can damage erectile tissues. I am familiar with demisexuality—the idea that some people cannot develop a sexual relationship without an emotional or a romantic bond first—but what about the opposite phenomenon? I lose interest in people who get to know me and my desire to hook up is quickly replaced by a desire to just be acquaintances. Not only is there a term for people like you— people who lose desire after getting to know

I realize this is circular logic but one of the ways I know I’m in good enough working order to sustain a relationship is that I’m in relationships

I’ve somehow managed to sustain. So if someone decides they wanna be with you—someone who has a choice about staying or going—then that person believes you’re in good enough working order. That’s a “yes” you can and should take for an answer but it’s not a “yes” you’re ever gonna get if you never allow yourself to date. At some point you have to take a chance—probably more than one chance—to find out whether or not you’re in good enough working order. I think it’s a good sign that your friends—people who know and love you—feel like you’re in good enough working order to get out there and start dating. (I realize that the ability to sustain a relationship isn’t, in and of itself, proof that a person is in good working order. Some relationships are toxic, abusive, codependent, etc. Getting out of a bad relationship, staying in a good one—either can be evidence that a person is in good working order.) Long distance relationships... how do you choose between moving overseas to another country, uprooting your life for a relationship, and staying close to family and friends and the familiar? I moved to the U.K. before the pandemic hit and I’m trying not to blame the relationship for a shit year where I wasn’t able to leave home or make new friends in a new country. We were together for one year before I moved here. I miss home and friends, I lost my dad, and I’m terrified that this relationship might fail at some point after we’ve started a family. And then I’ll be stuck in this country to be
near my children. Yes, I’m in therapy. But I think I need a Dan Savage reality check. I’m so sorry for the loss of your father. I would advise you to take a deep breath—several dozen a day—and give it another year. Once you’re able to get a job and make some new friends you’ll gain some clarity. If things are still good and you’re feeling more at home, great. Stay in the U.K. But if you’re still miserable and full of doubt, well, then you might want to end the relationship and head home. In the meantime you’re going to wanna stay in therapy and make sure you’re using the most effective possible form of birth control method you can get your hands on—which is available free from the U.K’s National Health Service. (And I don’t want to be a downer here or tip the scales… but there’s no way to eliminate the risk of a relationship ending or failing after you’ve started a family. Or before you’ve started a family.)
