he Florida Indigenous Alliance (FIA) announced that evidence of looting was discovered at a sacred Native American gravesite within the University of South Florida Forest Preserve (USFFP). The group is demanding that USF take action to protect the graves from further desecration. For the past month, members of FIA, along with USF students and faculty, have documented and shared substantial evidence of grave robbing with law enforcement. “FIA organizers Sheridan Murphy and Stuart Flores, along with others, removed a dozen shovels, numerous buckets, rakes, chairs, camping gear, sifting screens and litter from the site of Indigenous cemeteries that have been plundered by grave robbers,” FIA wrote in a statement. “The items were given to the USF Police Department.” Florida Statute 872.05, Florida’s Unmarked Human Burial Act, prohibits disturbing or looting Indigenous unmarked grave sites. The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act further protects Indigenous cemeteries. Yet, the FIA says that over the past three weeks, nothing has been done to protect the area. Robberies of Native American gravesites occur across the country, despite the laws protecting them. Experts say racism toward Natives leads to looters disrespecting their ancestors’ graves. The grave robbers are rarely pursued by law enforcement. The FIA shared a list of demands for USF to take steps to protect the site. • Place adequate and visible “no trespassing” signs around the area. • Place adequate and visible signs noting it is illegal to dig in the area pursuant to Florida State Statute 872.05. • Review where it is appropriate to place fencing, and increase patrols and visibility of law enforcement to deter looters. The USF Police Department and media officials at USF did not immediately respond to request for comment. But in a statement to CL, USFPD said it immediately responded when it was made aware of possible damage to the preserve burial site in May. USFPD began to evaluate any criminal

leaders to “consider the appropriate next steps for restricting unauthorized access and discouraging further damage.” Anyone with information regarding the case is being asked to contact the USF Police Department at 813-974-2628. “While the USF Police Department has extended a hand in the dialogue of cooperation, which the FIA respects and appreciates, there has been no substantive action by USF,” the FIA wrote. Royal Caribbean cruises might be a little inconvenient for unvaccinated guests. By Ken Storey

ven as New York and California lean on technology to ensure everyone remains safe, politicians in Florida have done the exact opposite by banning private businesses from requiring guests to provide proof they’re vaccinated. The ban has thrown an unexpected speed bump in the already chaotic restart to the cruise industry. Royal Caribbean plans to honor Florida’s law while also ensuring the safety of passengers on board, by irritating unvaccinated guests into staying away. In an unlisted YouTube video meant for travel agents, Royal Caribbean Group CEO Richard Fain explained the company’s plans, which largely consisted of making cruises more expensive and less welcoming for unvaccinated adults. Throughout the 10-minutelong video, Fain came out in strong support for vaccines, calling them the “key to everything” and praising the role the U.S. has played in their development and delivery. Fain compared getting the vaccine to not littering; it’s a small individual action, but when large groups do it, it has an outsize impact.

“Getting one today not only protects you from the virus, it protects the whole society and allows us to get back to normalcy,” he said, before turning the topic to people who refuse to get the vaccine. Initially, Royal Caribbean announced they would require all adults on board to be vaccinated, but they rescinded those requirements after a law banning “vaccine passports” was passed in Florida. For those ships with few or no children, Royal Caribbean plans to ensure more than 95% of those on board will be vaccinated. Other ships will see the vast majority of adults vaccinated. Among the ways it’s doing this is by requiring multiple tests for adults who refuse to show proof of a vaccine. A negative test from within the past 72 hours is required, followed by a second test at the terminal. A third test will be taken within 24 hours before disembarkation. Tests two and three will be conducted by a third party contracted by the cruise line. Those two tests will cost a combined $136 per person, charged to the guest’s onboard expense account.

After the initial two negative tests, passengers who do not provide proof of a vaccine will be barred from some onboard events and venues. Vaccinated guests will be able to access special events and venues specifically designed for them where masks won’t be required. Entertainment onboard will include select showtimes set aside for vaccinated guests only. Unvaccinated guests will also be forced to dine in a separate area and cannot take advantage of flexible options for eating outside of reserved times. On their website, Royal Caribbean also warns that all guests are subject to restrictions put in place by local authorities at ports the ships visit and notes that “it is reasonable to expect that unvaccinated guests will be subject to stricter protocols than vaccinated guests.” Fain believes the safety procedures are enough to make cruising safer than land-based activities due to creating a “bubble” on the ships. He called out theme parks and events, claiming that “they

can’t do extensive screening for something that’s only going to last for a few hours. All they can do is implement protocols to limit interaction.” That’s accurate, at least in Florida, though theme parks and venues in other places are working with groups like Clear to require vaccination proof before admission. After more than a year on pause, the awakening of the cruise industry has meant rules and plans change almost daily as cruise lines react to the latest from government officials along with revisions from the CDC. This constant evolving of what to expect has confused many potential cruisers. Fain acknowledged that even he struggles to stay current with the rapidly changing landscape of rules and plans, but he believes things will begin to calm down as reopenings start to occur. On their website, Royal Caribbean states they “are happy to provide” refunds to anyone unwilling to follow the new safety protocols.

wo weekends ago, a slew of far-right grifters, coronavirus truthers and Qanon followers gathered for the “Reopen America Tour” at The River at Tampa Bay Church, which is conveniently run by evangelical conspiracy theorist Rodney Howard-Browne. The three-day event featured top tier Trump World guests like disgraced national security advisor and military coup-wanter Michael Flynn, accused tax dodger Roger Stone, and pizzagate pusher Ann Vandersteel, to name a few. But arguably one of the more prominent speakers was Mike “My Pillow Guy” Lindell, who has spent the better half of a year fruitlessly trying to get anyone to listen to his incredibly dumb, and unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump. According to Right Wing Watch, during his presentation, Lindell lamented that no one in the media, or the courts for that matter, will take him seriously anymore. So, to get his message out that the election was stolen from Trump, Lindell has now resorted to “cyber guys.” “What I’m going to do to get this to the world,” said Lindell, “it’s called a cyber symposium. And what it is, is I’m going to have a venue at the end of July—it’s your job, everybody,

to get the word out to the world—we’re going to get every cyber guy that has credentials— they’re called CISSP credentials—they’re going to be there.” “We’re bringing in all the cyber guys,” he continued. “They’re gonna be there. Then we’re bringing all the media. Maybe even Fox will show up! What a concept. And then we’re going to bring in all senators, governors—even the corrupt ones, Brian Kemp—and legislatures, secretary of states, and every single government official that wants to be there, because when we show them these packet captures, we’re gonna just give them out to all them cyber guys so they can have their own guy go, ‘How many votes were flipped here in Tampa?’ Here you go. Boom. It’s going to be a worldwide event. Millions are going to see it, and those Supreme Court justices are going to look at it then, and they’re going to go 9-0 that this country was attacked. The election is gonna come down. Donald Trump will be in office by this fall, for sure.” Recently Lindell confessed to Daily Beast that he lost $7 million dollars after retrofitting 75% of his pillow factories to make face masks, which he now says he wants to burn out of sheer anger.

Fringe Review: First Look A Local Artist Makes Good.

Question: What do “Daredevil,” “The Legend of Korra,” “Kim Possible,” “Spider-Man,” and “Scott Pilgrim” have in common? Answer: Airtight Theatre’s latest, award winning show, The Sack: A Play on Superheroes. Another Tampa Fringe veteran, Jordan Bertke (Artistic Director, Airtight Theatre) is no stranger to producing great work on the fringe, and The Sack is no exception. Winner of Best Solo Comedy Show at this year’s Orlando Fringe, Bertke’s new comedy is a one man tour de force. A relatively new voice on Tampa stages, Bertke is nonetheless an artist to watch, with hit shows appearing in fringe after fringe. His work is comical and light, like an episode of Friends or Charles in Charge. Despite being young, Bertke is very good at what he does. You’d never guess the creator of such well seasoned comedy was a recent graduate just dipping his toes in the water, but that is one of

the gifts of fringe, allowing new and emerging artists to gain notoriety in a market they might otherwise be priced out of. Bertke has taken on Tampa audiences and delivered, selling out shows and scooping up awards while satisfying audience members and critics alike. This is a true fringe success story if there ever was one. Bertke’s shows aren’t deeply dramatic works of High Art, just a virtually guaranteed good time. Sack: A Play on Superheroes, will also be at HCC Ybor as part of the Tampa International Fringe Festival, running July 29 - August 8 at HCC Ybor!

Veteran Entertainer Turns Fringely

It’s no secret; fringe can be a grab-bag. With shows chosen at random, audiences never know what they’re going to get. Sometimes, it’s a trainwreck, and sometimes it’s an absolute riot, and nowhere is that more true than on stage during one of Scott Swenson’s shows. WIT Improv veteran and long time consultant to theme parks and corporations alike. Swenson takes his one-man improv style to the stage like a bull in a china shop (or a bal-

lerina in a butchery). Every show is a diﬀerent experience, as attested to by the many repeat audience members at the 2019 Tampa Fringe, where he won a Venue Choice award, and was one of the top grossing shows of the fest. Like fringe in general, improv can be sublime or average (to be kind), and Swenson’s work epitomizes this; his playful interactive style guiding the audience through silly scenarios and wacky wordplay, but always delivering a memorable performance. A sequel to his award winning rst show, Preach! 2 is sure to charm and delight as much as Preach! did, while embodying everything we love about the fringe. In Swenson’s own words, “Fringe is the incubator (or perhaps gateway drug) for new and creative live performance. [. . .] Everyone should let go of their expectations and jump into the ‘bubbling artistic soup’ that is Tampa Fringe!” Preach! 2: The Second Coming, will be one of many shows at the Tampa International Fringe Festival, running July 29 - August 8 at HCC Ybor! Kitten season

Here’s what to do instead of bringing pets to the shelter. By Arin Greenwood

ou know this time of year as summer, or our annual vacation into sweatiest Hades. In animal welfare we have another name for it: kitten season. Adorable name; really hard, busy time for animal welfare organizations. Just ask local cat rescue groups. Kitten season is when animal shelters and rescue groups are full. And not just with cats and kittens—it is the busiest time of year for dogs, too. That means if you are trying to find a place in a shelter or rescue for an animal, you may find yourself being told there’s no room. Even government shelters can be limiting which animals they take in, to try to conserve space—and for other reasons, like using resources to keep animals in homes, as Hillsborough County’s Pet Resource Center director Scott Trebatoski tells us. At Human Animal Support Services, we encourage this model of animal sheltering: keeping pets in the community whenever possible, with shelters serving as emergency backup for animals who truly have no place else to go.

We know this may leave folks with questions about what they should do with the animals they find, or can’t keep. Here are five alternatives to bringing an animal to the shelter. Hold onto found pets Most lost pets are picked up less than a mile from their home. Many are just blocks away, if that. They all have a much better chance of getting back home if they are kept in the neighborhood where they’re found, not brought to the shelter. Call the Pet Resource Center or Pinellas County Animal Services to file a found animal report, and register on the Finding Rover website. Get the pet scanned for a microchip at a vet’s office or police station, and post them to local lost and found pets pages and to your local Nextdoor and Facebook groups. PRC will give you supplies if you hold onto the pet for at least 48 hours, too.

Support kittens where they are until they’re weaned (mom, too) Kittens too young to eat on their own, will have to be bottle fed every two hours. For weeks.

Few shelters have that kind of staff, and it’s very hard to find volunteers. This puts neonatal kittens, without their mothers, at extremely high risk of euthanasia once they come to a shelter. Absent injury or some other serious danger, support kittens where you find them until they are about six weeks old, when they can be weaned. You can leave out food and water for the mother. At six weeks, bring the kittens into your home to socialize them. The mom cat can get spayed, then returned to her outdoor home. Get the kittens spayed or neutered when they are two months old, then adopt them out. You don’t need to do that through a rescue group or shelter, though you can call around and see if any have the resources to provide support. Use pet food banks If you’ve lost your job and are having a hard time feeding your dog or cat, you may think your only option is to give them up to the shelter. It’s usually not. “We can work with them. Just because you’re poor doesn’t mean you don’t love the animal just as much as somebody who has more means,” says PRC’s Scott Trebatoski. For Hillsborough County residents, the Pet Resource Center offers pet food and other

supplies, no questions asked. Friends of Strays is partnering with the St. Pete Free Clinic and Meals on Wheels to get pet food out to those who need it. Finding your pet a new family online If you cannot keep your pet, use online resources to find them a new family. In addition to Nextdoor and local Facebook groups, try home-home.org and rehome.adoptapet.com—two websites that help match you up with potential adopters. Foster, adopt, donate, volunteer You know about adopting, donating, and volunteering. How about fostering? Every single rescue group and shelter in Tampa Bay would be so thrilled to have you temporarily take in kittens, cats, puppies, and dogs. Doing so literally saves lives. Because I am on the board, I’ll put in a plug here for fostering through Friends of Strays in St. Pete. Check out other organizations’ websites for more info, too. A race to the bottom of hell Welcome to the 2024 Republican primary. By Jeffrey C. Billman

n June 10, the Florida Board of Education banned the teaching of critical race theory from its classrooms, with Gov. Ron DeSantis accusing educators of “trying to indoctrinate [students] with ideology.” The 1619 Project was, of course, banned. It’s almost counterproductive to point out that no K-12 students in Florida learn CRT, like an admission that it would be bad if they did. Students aren’t taught CRT for the same reason they’re not lectured on John Rawls and Jürgen Habermas. On June 15, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law a bill forbidding K-12 social studies teachers from discussing concepts such as that a person could “be discriminated against or receive adverse treatment solely or partly because of the individual’s race”; that “meritocracy or traits such as a hard work ethic are racist or sexist or were created by members of a particular race to oppress members of another race”; or that slavery was central to the country’s founding. The 1619 Project was, of course, banned. On June 22, DeSantis signed a bill requiring public colleges and universities to survey students and faculty about their beliefs and viewpoints. The Orwellian-ness of the state collecting a database of its employees’ and students’ political positions aside, the authoritarian kicker is what DeSantis plans to do with the results: defund education if he thinks universities are “intellectually repressive”—i.e., too liberal— which he will. The results will also provide a weapon for the unsubtle threat DeSantis is sending to academics: Piss me off, and you’ll pay. “ U n f o r t u n a t e l y, now the norm is, these are more intellectually repressive environments. You have orthodoxies that are promoted, and other viewpoints are shunned or even suppressed,” DeSantis said at a press conference. DeSantis failed to cite examples, but he “knows a lot of parents” worried their kids will be “indoctrinated.” That same day, Abbott announced a special session of the Texas legislature in July to address the state’s pressing issues: making it harder for people of color to vote and “[making] sure we do more” on critical race theory, he told campaign supporters. “It’s a strange dynamic we’re seeing,” a Texas Democrat told Huffington Post. “Florida and Texas are trying to outcompete each other to see who can pass the most far-right Neanderthal

legislation. … The focus is on scoring points with old, white voters who see the country slipping away from them demographically.” If he’s reelected next year—given Florida Republicans’ decades of work to rig the system, and Florida Democrats’ long track record of sucking, he probably will—DeSantis will be a frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. Abbott—should he be reelected next year—will likely run, too, jockeying for position in the same political lane. Hence, the tit-for-tat culture-warrior posturing: Anything you can do, I can do Trumpier. On May 31, Abbott declared 34 border counties a “disaster” so he could spend $250 million to build the wall Trump never did. Two weeks later, DeSantis announced that he was sending Florida police officers to the border in Texas and Arizona. In April, DeSantis signed a bill that all but bans protesting: three or more people engaged in “tumultuous activity” is a riot; blocking roadways or vandalizing monuments is a felony; arrested protesters must spend the night in jail. (Also, DeSantis gets veto power over local police-funding decisions.) In May, Texas made it a felony for protesters to block an emergency vehicle—not the same. But Abbott also signed an unconstitutional (for now) bill banning abortion at six weeks; DeSantis couldn’t make that happen. Florida cracked down on absentee voting— DeSantis allowed only Fox News to witness the bill-signing—and, in its special session, Texas will, too, while also targeting voting methods popular among Black Houstonians. Florida enacted an unconstitutional law to sanction social media companies that ban politicians; the Texas Senate passed something similar, though the bill didn’t get to the gov’s desk. Abbott ended Texas’s mask mandate and COVID restrictions on March 10. On May 3, DeSantis—who lifted statewide limits on bar, restaurant and hotel capacity last September— issued an executive order overriding local COVID restrictions. You get the point. They’re responding to each other, sure. But they’re also trying to capture the MAGA zeitgeist—to figure out what the crowd wants and give them more than anyone else. Their top priorities aren’t intended to make people’s lives better. That’s not what the crowd

Instead, they target people: people who vote the wrong way, think the wrong way, challenge authority. That’s their ticket to the 2024 nomination. Not governing effectively. Not developing creative solutions to complicated problems like climate change and economic inequality or preparing for the next pandemic or natural disaster. But finding or inventing enemies: election fraud, protesters, cancel culture, Twitter, woke corporations, critical race theory. It’s not just Abbott and DeSantis. Steve Bannon and other Trumpland sleazeballs think they can return to power by exploiting racial anxieties. “[Critical race theory] is the Tea Party to the 10th power,” Bannon told Politico. “… I look at this and say, ‘Hey, this is how we are going to win.’ I see 50 seats in 2022. … People

who are serious in 2024 and beyond are going to focus on it.” It doesn’t get more explicit than that. Lee Atwater’s infamous Southern Strategy interview comes to mind. As governors, DeSantis and Abbott got a head-start on culture-war posturing. Others who covet 1600 Pennsylvania—Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, Rick Scott, Nikki Haley, Tom Cotton— need to catch up, and DeSantis and Abbott need new outrages, new enemies, to stoke the fire. MAGA runs on rage. The 2024 primary is going to be MAGA on steroids. That’s where the crowd is. It’s what the people want. Which is to say: The next three years are going to be a race to the bottom. Salad and grain bowl chain Crisp & Green plans expansion to Tampa Bay The Minnesotabased salad chain Crisp & Green is planning a massive expansion in Central Florida. According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, which spoke with CEO Steele Smiley, the chain plans nearly 20 restaurants for the I-4 corridor. They hope to open between five and eight locations in Orlando and a further eight to 12 stores in Tampa. Smiley told the paper that a deal had already been reached with a Tampa franchisee, though he declined to share their name. “They’re professional restaurateurs who are involved in other concepts,” Smiley said. The push into central Florida is part of a nationwide expansion for the brand in 2021. The salad and grain bowl fast-casual restaurant is also planning to build in Texas, Iowa and the Dakotas. Smiley noted that the coronavirus pandemic offered a mixed blessing for franchises. While opening restaurants has become riskier, the wealth of cheap real estate post-economic downturn lowers the stakes considerably. “Real estate has never been more open. last took a normal, unaided, pain free step on May 18. My back surgery is technically a success. But it’s now June and I can’t yet walk more than a few steps without my left leg going numb. The same thing happens quickly when I sit in a wheelchair, so that means I spend long, long days IN BED, except for those rare moments when the physical or occupational therapy folks stop by. With no resolution in sight, I’ve had to face the possibility that I might never walk again. It’s the kind of two-by-four between the eyes that demands your attention. On the morning of June 7 after nearly two weeks of failure, I slowly and carefully rise to sit on the edge of my rehab bed. I stand as usual and things feel different as I grasp the walker. I began to walk . . . and walk . . . and walk. FORTY steps. I then sit in my wheelchair . . . for 18 minutes. And finally, I shuffle to the bathroom for the first time in 18 days and feel normal; no more bedpans. The happy occupational therpist asks that I try to eat my dinner sitting in the wheelchair, which I miraculously can do—but I’m eating quickly. In just the last 12 hours, I’ve seen a “long and winding road” ahead, but it’s one that eventually leads to a return to normal life. I don’t know yet what long term pain I’ll confront, but I now know that I’ll be able to hold my grandkid’s hands, and walk till my heart’s content. As Oscar Hammerstein said, “one foot, other foot.” The weeks of projected rehab slipped by ever so quickly. First one, then two, and now moving at warp speed toward a full three weeks until I’m finally released.

Much like my stay in the hospital, the fine folks at rehab have been taking good care of me. But I seem incapable of avoiding dramatic incidents. “The wheel of your bed was on your call button” sounds a bit like “the dog ate my homework” when you’ve been without your pain meds or water for 12 hours. But once we swap it out for an electric push button, it’s been smooth sailing—full of unique experiences. The wound care nurse snaps a horrendous picture of my smiling buttocks to track their healing. As I first pointed out in the initial installment of this cautionary tale, you don’t want my fate to befall you. None of this is fun. As I urge my newfound walker down the hall, I’m dressed in a smashing ensemble of back-to-back hospital gowns designed to shield my stitches, et. al., from the eyes of the masses. When a pair of smiling young certified nursing assistants ask if I wear blue or yellow briefs, I’m confused. “I brought some from home,” I say—only to realize that they mean the adult diapers that define their world. I quickly correct them and count my blessings. Each day I build my strength to dress myself and walk. And walk some more. It appears my tail of horror reached many of you. I’ve been to the edge of the abyss filled with ice packs and TENS simulators and want to remind you all of one simple axiom. Get off your ass and walk everyday . . . OR enjoy the burning of hot coals on your inner thigh. The choice is yours and yours alone.

By the time “Zola” was finished, King said she had already processed her experience in Florida. But when she first saw the film, she said some of those traumas resurfaced. “It was very traumatic in real life...I had never experienced something like this before,” King told CL. “It was something I had to process on my own. And I think through writing I did that; through writing it on Twitter and finding the humor in it. And to have all these people be receptive of it.” King said it took a few viewings to get to the point where she was able to appreciate the artistry of the film and the message it was trying to convey. “Life imitates art, yes, but in that moment am I like, ‘Oh my god Tampa is so beautiful, this is an artistic moment?’ Hell no, I’m like, what’s going on,” King said.

At its core, it deals with subject matter that is not humorous at all, but when I read those tweets, I was astonished by how A’Ziah was able to make the ordeal so funny.” For King, the release of “Zola” in 2021 is “perfect timing” to open more conversations about the stark differences between consensual sex work and nonconsensual trafficking. She also said the film is something to look forward to, especially as #TheStory brought the internet together and resonated with so many people in different ways. “This was a moment on the internet. We all kind of experienced it together,” she said. “So, I think people feel like this film, that they too were a part of it. We’ve all been on this journey together.”

“Z

ola” is the latest ode to all the sticky, seedy, sandy stereotypes we love about Tampa Bay. The film is a stranger-than-fiction tale following the wacky, intense saga of A’Ziah “Zola” King, who recounted her 48-hour journey in Florida in a 148-Tweet-long thread that went mega viral in 2015 and was dubbed #TheStory. Millions read the story of how a seemingly harmless and glamorous “hoe trip” to Tampa to make a bunch of money dancing turned into scary moments of sex trafficking, going up against Tampa gangsters and attempted suicide. Much of “Zola,” which arrives in theaters June 30, was filmed at the end of 2018 in the Tampa Bay area where #TheStory took place. “We (King and director Janicza Bravo) had the same goal: To make the film very authentic, very 2015, very Tampa, very Florida...very me,” King, who was 19 at the time of the trip in March 2015, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. My main role (was) to get them into my head and into that point of time in my life because it’s a very specific time, not just in Florida but in the world.” King is an executive producer in the eponymous film, whose screenplay is based on the Rolling Stone piece with King that came out less than a month after the viral thread dropped. As played by Taylour Paige, Zola is also the star and chief narrator of the film. It all started on Oct. 27, 2015, when Detroit-native King tweeted: “Y’all wanna hear a story about why me and this bitch here fell out????? It’s kind of long but full of suspense.” “For me, Zola is a fully realized woman making her own decisions – she’s not this onedimensional stripper,” Paige said in press notes from distributor A24. “Janicza (Bravo) doesn’t oversimplify Black people, or people in general. She’s showing with this movie that we are diverse within our own cultures, and infinitely complex.” The film follows Zola (Paige), Stefani (Riley Keough), her boyfriend Derek (Nicholas Braun) and Stefani’s violent roommate/pimp X (Colman Domingo) on a sordid odyssey from grimy, yellowed motel rooms and shadowy, mirror-filled strip clubs to luxurious high-end suites and cliché pastelcolored waterfront resorts. “Zola” a sweet and sour dreamscape showcasing the uncomfortable

For “Zola” director Janicza Bravo, filming in Florida, Tampa in particular, was essential to the look and feel of telling #TheStory through film. Bravo was struck by the Tampa Bay area’s “overtly Lynchian veneer” when filming “Zola” at the end of 2018. “Most of our movie takes place indoors, in motel rooms, hotel rooms and strip clubs,” she said. “You can replicate these spaces anywhere in America, but the light in Florida is unlike anywhere else. There isn’t a duplicate.” Local viewers will certainly spot more than a dozen familiar sights in “Zola”—from the Dolphin Beach Resort on St. Pete Beach and the Westshore Grand in Tampa to the truck off Interstate-4 painted with “Jesus Saves” and the Royal Palm Motel on Nebraska Avenue. The light, colors and texture of these locales were “exactly what the story called for,” according to Bravo. “Strange feels too simple a description, but while Florida marches to its own beat in general, Tampa’s textures are singular, and we needed them,” she said. “That atmosphere of heat and sweat and discomfort kind of creeps into you because it plays such a huge part in the movie.” “Zola” ends with the four main characters driving over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, the bright light of the Florida sun and stunning blues of the

proof that maybe Diesel shouldn’t be pulling double-duty as both actor and producer, given that he apparently pissed off Johnson to the point that Universal gave The Rock his own spinoff (“Hobbes & Shaw”) instead of losing his character altogether. “The Fast Saga” is the kind of movie where characters actually have conversations on screen about how they never get shot, always survive and never, ever get seriously injured. At one point, Tyrese Gibson’s character actually asks Chris Bridges’ character if there are invincible. It’s also the kind of movie that sends Gibson and Bridges into outer-fucking-space in a goddamned car, and they survive, with no training and no spacesuits. “F9: The Fast Saga” is the kind of movie that resurrects popular characters who died in past installments, only to tease that they may turn bad in future installments, which again makes zero sense. It’s also the kind of movie that trots out a host of “guest stars” for no reason other than to have the ability to promote their participation online just to coerce people to pay money to watch a franchise that should have ended with 2017’s “The Fate of Furious,” which had cars racing a nuclear submarine. For instance, why is Cardi B in this movie? She literally just shows as the leader of a fake

Interpol unit made up of all women that helps free Toretto. She’s onscreen for less than five minutes. Why is Helen Mirren in this movie? She appears just long enough to get into a car chase and to tell Toretto that he’s her favorite American. Why is Charlize Theron in this movie? She only appears with a handful of the cast, and none of the core actors, and her character basically slips into the night after her evil plot is foiled. Why is John Cena in this movie? He doesn’t act, unless you consider scowling to be acting, and he barely has any dialogue because all of the dialogue written for his character is mostly relegated to a younger version of his character in the numerous flashback sequences where we learn why Cena’s Jakob hates Diesel’s Dominic following the death of their father. To be fair, I actually really enjoyed “Fast Five” and “Furious 6,” which were exceptional action flicks compared to every installment since. I even liked a good chunk of “Hobbes & Shaw,” the Johnson-led spinoff with Jason Statham. But this latest bullshit demands a hard stop. An intervention. Maybe even a little bird to whisper in Diesel’s ear that it’s time to quit while he’s still ahead, and retire Toretto for good.

Clocking in with nearly 10,000-square-feet, the home is located at 3105 Gulf of Mexico Dr., in Longboat Key, and comes with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Though the listing says it was built in 2004, the home features some serious ‘90s cruise ship vibes, including a very Art Deco-style foyer, polished limestone throughout, a “sky lounge,” and

a three-story grand-staircase. The home also features an infinity pool, a commercial grade elevator, an air-conditioned seven-car garage, and, like any good cruise ship, a water slide that starts from the rooftop deck. Like Action Bronson, who started writing when he couldn’t work his kitchen job because of a broken leg, Airborne’s house arrest when he was a teenager led to him buckling down to make music. The current roster’s 10-person lineup includes three members from 1967: Robert Lamm on keyboards and vocals, Lee Loughnane on trumpet and flugelhorn and trombonist James Pankow. This gig, rescheduled from July 3 of last year, originally had Rick Springfield on the bill but according to Chicago’s website the “Jessie’s Girl” singer isn’t joining on the rescheduled dates because of conflicts. Malaya w/Heavyheavy Like a lot of bands, local and otherwise, Tampa Bay’s Malaya took a break in 2020 before getting back onstage this February. Self-described as a high energy female-fronted alt rock band—think Paramore or Evanescence—vocalist Robin Carbonell and guitarist Adam Irizarry started the band as a duo way back in 2012 and added both drummer José Reyes and Josué Rodríguez on rhythm and backup vocals during their break from playing live. (Crowbar, Ybor City)—Ray Roa C Stephen Christian w/Christian McAlhaney If you can’t wait for Anberlin’s upcoming fall tour with the Early November (hitting Jannus Live on Sept. 5.), 40% of the alt-rock band—Stephen Christian and Christian McAlhaney—is playing an intimate Ybor City listening room show. Ironically, both of the musicians’ names involve “Christian.” Anberlin has struggled with the perception of being a religious act mainly because, well, the Winter Haven-born outfit sort of is and signed to Christian rock label Tooth and Nail. Stephen Christian is now a pastor at Grace Family Church in Lutz. But the song “Feel Good Drag” was also number one on Billboard’s Alternative Rock charts, so I guess they’re like the Amy Grant of the 97X crowd. As a duo, Christian and McAlhaney perform songs by Anberlin as well their other projects including Anchor & Braille, Acceptance, and Loose Talk. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing Co., Ybor City)

Sister Hazel w/Tonic/The Brummies If you’re fond of the ‘90s and partying on the Fourth of July, then head to the Cuban Club courtyard. The term “one hit wonder” comes to mind when discussing Sister Hazel and Tonic, but if you’re a fan—which they have many of—that may be insulting. So though a lot of people only know Gainesville’s Sister Hazel by the cheery sing-a-long “All for You” and Tonic by its rock anthem “If You Could Only See,” there’s a whole group of devotees who know all the deep cuts. Though foldable chairs are allowed in, umbrellas are only permitted for “rain emergencies” (but summer in Florida is a rain emergency, right?). Dear Oracle, after this crazy pandemic year, I am choosing to take a big risk and leave my draining corporate job for another one in a new field. The new one has promise for growth (which my current job does not), aligns with my personal values, and promises a much-needed work/life balance. The downside is that I’ll be taking a pay cut, which is scary! However, I still feel like this is the best decision for me. Do the cards have any advice as I go forward on this new adventure? —Risky Business Cards: Knight of Pentacles, Nine of Pentacles reversed, King of Cups, Two of Pentacles Dear Risky, first off, Mazel Tov on quitting your job and welcome to the workers’ revolution! It is a scary process to take your needs seriously, but you should be proud of yourself for striking out to find a way to do just that. In this spread, you’re represented by the Knight of Pentacles. Pentacles are the suite of material wealth and work but also other “earthy” things like health and home. It’s grounded in the here and now. The Knight of Pentacles is someone who can take that grounded energy into battle. It’s level-headed and calm. It is hard to intellectually divorce from the idea that “more money = better life” because money makes things easier. It might not “buy happiness,” but it certainly pays off a lot of stress. But, you say that you’re taking a pay cut, not that you can’t make rent/pay bills, so it’s essential to channel that Knight and stay grounded. You might not be able to go H.A.M. at Hyde Park Village, but you’ll be alright. What’s going to help you through this is the King of Cups. Not to be too hetero about it, but King of Cups is often a husband or a romantic partner who is calm, loving, and wise. If this sounds like your partner (or someone else in your life), go ahead and lean on them. They can be your cheerleader in this. If it is a partner or

someone you’re financially tied to, they can also be a calming force and remind you that, yes, you can afford to make this decision. Which brings us to the entire reason you left your job anyway: you want a work/life balance. The final outcome is the Two of Pentacles, which is all about balancing work, life, and dreams. A common complaint about the work/ life balance being out of whack is that you have no energy to do anything else at the end of a workday. It’s difficult meeting basic needs (grocery shopping, laundry, general parenting) and nearly impossible to have the energy to do things for pleasure. But we need that time for leisure. We need time to see our family, to work on hobbies, to spend time with friends, or to fall asleep in a sunbeam like a cat. Rest is essential for our physical, mental, and spiritual health. Leisure time can also lead to profound ideas, creativity, and discovery about ourselves and the world. (see: every philosopher, artist, and explorer/ scientist pre-1900 and plenty of them after.) Keep calm, Risky. Go bravely into this chaotic capitalist world, lean on those who love you, and remember why you are doing this in the first place. Best of luck, my dear! We have a lot of things happening right now, including our wedding in the fall, but we really want to get a dog. We lost our old boy last spring and feel ready to let a new

Should we wait until after the wedding to get a dog, or is it alright to get one sooner?—Down for Dog Time Cards: The Lovers, King of Pentacles, Six of Swords This is a difficult thing for me to make a call on because 1.) I love animals 2.) the majority of pets I’ve ever had just showed up one day. My childhood dog appeared as a collarless puppy when my parents were on a walk, and we found our cats as kittens in our garage and garden. I’m a big believer that if an animal friend finds its way to you, then it’s fated to be. So if you’re John Wick’d a dog, congratulations, you now have a puppy. However, in typically wet-blanket fashion, the cards suggest a more “responsible” and “serious consideration” approach. There is clearly some Big Big Love in your heart for a new dog (The Lovers), but it is a journey that requires some serious thought (Six of Swords), and you need to be grounded and responsible before you get one (King of Pentacles.) So you should do some dumb responsible thinking and consider what would be best for the dog. Will you be traveling for your wedding/ honeymoon? Will you have to board your dog? If you’re getting a puppy, will this affect their training schedule or vet checkup for shots or spay/neutering? Look at your schedules and be honest about what could work for you and your new furry friend. Best of luck!

I just attended the nauseating wedding of my 30-year-old niece to her boyfriend of several years. Both of them seem as gay as possible but they are diehard religious fanatics. I can list 50 signs these two are gay, and once you point it out to someone who isn’t a bible thumper they go, “Yeah, that makes so much sense.” The bride’s father, who was also the minister, praised them for not moving in together before the wedding—another sign. I personally find hetero abstinence until age 30 to be highly suspicious. In fact, refraining from heterosexual intercourse until that age only seems realistic if someone is gay or asexual. Our extended families are all religious blowhards and we’re the only queer-friendly outlet in the family. I want badly to let the newlyweds know it’s OK to question the complexities of sexuality and that we’re here to support them. I fear they’ll live for decades in awkwardness because my niece’s minister father is beyond judgmental and insists love (and marriage) can only exist between one MAN and one WOMAN. Is there any tactful way to ask someone if they’re gay? Or to at least offer support if they are closeted? How do we let them know our little corner of the family will love and support them? Now if you were to take the next step—a radical step—and actually call your niece on the phone and asking her if she’s queer… if you were to list all the traits you regard as proof both she and her husband are queer… it’s possible she might suddenly come out. Unlikely, UNCLE, but possible. But it’s almost certain you would be scratched from the guest list for all future family events—whether or not your niece comes out—which seriously tips the scales in favor of making that call.
