Tampa City Council said in February that its hands are tied on rent control and rent stabilization due to state laws, per the advice of the city’s legal team, despite protesters flooding city hall demanding it. Mayor Castor said such measures would “kill development” in the area. The demands also come in the midst of disturbing infrastructure problems at apartment complexes in Tampa. “Our faith and trust in our City leadership is quickly waning as we deal with the housing crisis,” People’s Council wrote. “We believe the solutions we are providing will begin a robust pathway to guaranteed housing in Tampa, which

ampa housing advocates are calling on Tampa City Council to provide legal representation for tenants, among other demands to help protect renters in Tampa. The People’s Council of Tampa (PCT), a coalition of local activist and political groups, has sent a letter to city council members and Mayor Jane Castor, asking the city to pass an ordinance that mirrors one passed in Miami-Dade County in March. Miami-Dade now provides an “Office of Tenant Advocate” which focuses on connecting tenants to legal resources that they need, and helps inform tenants of their rights. The county also requires that landlords disclose known issues with the property, including mold or rodent infestations. The ordinance prohibits discrimination towards tenants based on prior evictions, among other protections. PCT wants to see a similar ordinance passed in Tampa, and the coalition plans on heading to city council at a May 26 workshop at 9 a.m. to demand it. The group also listed further demands, which include using American Rescue Plan Funds to establish a non-religious city-run homeless shelter and to declare a housing state of emergency in Tampa. Sociologists have found that religious-based homeless shelters often leave homeless people “hyper-institutionalized” and inadequately prepared for life outside the shelter. “On February 24, a large number of constituents of all demographics and backgrounds made public comments about the looming rent crisis and by extension, the housing crisis we are facing in Tampa,” the groups wrote in their letter to the city. “More than one media outlet has commented on the seriousness of the crisis, but yet, substantial change has not yet been made.” In the letter, the People’s Council urged all city officials that plan to run for future office to pledge, on the record, that they will not take any developer donations for their campaign. The raging rental crisis has been the source of protest and debate as many tenants find steep rental price increases to be unbearable. Last week, Tampa City Council passed an ordinance that requires landlords to give 60 days notice

Indigenous group says graves still being looted at USF preserve. By Justin Garcia
I
ndigenous activists are demanding that the University of South Florida immediately place warning signs around looted Native American graves within USF’s Forest Preserve, after nearly a year of asking for more protections for the site. The group’s demand for signage comes after continued evidence of grave robbing, and what local Native Americans see as an inadequate response from USF to their demands for more protections. In the months following USF’s Request for Information (RFI) to develop the preserve in April of 2021, there was an uptick in the looting of sacred burial mounds, a practice that has been occurring off and on at the property for decades. In June of last year, the Florida Indigenous Alliance (FIA) asked for more protections. This year, USF dropped its attempt to develop the preserve through the RFI. But the group says the site is still vulnerable because USF hasn’t made it clear to grave robbers that they are not welcome. “We have previously requested USF place signs on the forest preserve denoting that grave robbing is illegal in Florida,” FIA wrote in a
statement. “We have shown them that the site has been repeatedly looted after USF put out the RFI, and they have had months to procure and place the signs. For an insignificant amount of money they can finally begin to show they intend to protect the curial sites within the preserve, and so far, USF hasn’t even managed to do that.” Florida Statute 872.05, Florida’s Unmarked Human Burial Act, prohibits disturbing or looting Indigenous unmarked grave sites. The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act further protects Indigenous cemeteries. FIA wants signs around the area to express this, so that grave robbers can be properly warned that they are open prosecution for desecrating the site. FIA gave credit to USF for sending a campus police officer with them last year to investigate the scene. It was then that the group was told by the USF police that it’s harder to pursue charges on the grave robbers without warning signs being present. litter, are still found throughout the area. The litter not only disrespects the sacred site, but also puts the wildlife in the area in danger. Robberies of Native American gravesites regularly occur across the country, despite the laws protecting them. Experts say racism toward Natives leads to looters disrespecting their ancestors’ graves. The grave robbers are rarely pursued by law enforcement. CL reached out to USF and USFPD’s communications teams with questions about why signage hasn’t been posted around the area, almost a year after FIA asked for more protections. “The USF Police Department continues to take steps to help protect the indigenous human burial site located within the North Fletcher property,” wrote Audrey G. Clarke, Public Information Representative for USFPD in an email. “In partnership with other law enforcement organizations, the USFPD is prepared to follow up on any leads, and apply criminal charges against anyone who engages in disturbing the burial site.To effectively do so, we don’t believe it’s appropriate to discuss or divulge investigative systems or strategies.”
The agency did not answer the question of whether or not it can press charges on looters without the signs being posted, but did say that the agency has not heard of damage or disturbance at the site since CL last inquired about the situation three months ago. Last year, USFPD said the looting became an active investigation in May of 2021, as soon as the department found out about substantial looting that occurred. At the time, USFPD said it was working in coordination with “other state and local agencies to assess the extent of the damage and determine further investigative actions.” The department said it was aware of FIA’s request for additional security and was working with USF leaders to “consider the appropriate next steps for restricting unauthorized access and discouraging further damage.” Yet, almost a year later, FIA is still asking for their small request of signage to be fulfilled—leaders say that if USF refuses to take more steps to protect the sites in the future, the group will take things into its own hands. “We cannot tolerate continued looting of those sites, and we will act to protect the burial sites,” FIA wrote.

City attorneys eye changes after fracas over Tampa’s Hanna ‘City Center.’ By Justin Garcia

fter the City of Tampa’s blunder in privately selecting a contractor for its $108 million “City Center at Hanna Avenue” project, the city attorney’s office is eyeing changes to the construction bidding process. Tampa City attorney Morris Massey spoke at council last Thursday, saying that he submitted a memo to city council members that aims to adjust the city’s bidding process. Since last December, there’s been outcry from the community about the city handing the massive City Center project to DPR Construction without a public bid. “I submitted a memo with some recommended changes to our CCNA rules to increase transparency and put limitations on the ability to increase project scope,” Massey said. CCNA stands for Consultants Competitive Negotiation Act. Several local construction experts argued that the city violated state and local laws, including the CCNA, when the city skipped a public bidding process for the city center project.
The city argued that it followed state and local CCNA laws, but is now seeking to adjust the local law to address issues with transparency. “As to the transparency issue, we’re recommending that the rules be changed to require publication of the announcement of the need for design build services at least 30 days prior to the deadline for submission of proposals and qualifications, and to require publication on the city’s website,” Massey said. Massey also suggested a list of construction firms be maintained by the contract administration department and all those firms be separately notified of construction projects that are up for bid in the future. Another controversial aspect of the City Center project was the increase in the amount of money awarded to DPR Construction. What started as a $6 million dollar repair project became a $108 million dollar City Center project, without other firms getting the chance to compete for it.

“Regarding the issue about the growth or putting limitations on the ability to increase the scope of a project, we’re suggesting that rules be adopted that would prohibit Cardinal [this means contract] or material changes,” Massey said. “And those would include changes to the design criteria package for plans and specifications for a project that will result in a land use change, site enlargement, relocation or facility use change, change of a primary utility being constructed or more than doubling the length of a utility project.” Massey added that the changes would also address any project that doubles in cost, and that such an increase in cost would constitute a Cardinal, or contract, change. Any plan that doubles in cost or undergoes a material change would have to go through the CCNA process again, under the suggested changes. This would mean that the project would also have to come back before council for approval. Councilman Bill Carlson thanked Massey for the city attorney’s office work, but said that the doubling in cost of a project being the threshold concerned him.
“I wish it was like 20% or something, but you will have to look at what’s reasonable, too,” Carlson said. Massey said that construction case law says that doubling the cost of a project is usually the threshold. City council did not set a meeting date to consider the city attorney’s memo, but no one objected to Massey’s suggestions. After concern from the community, the city brought in more participation from the Black community on the project, which is located at 2515 E Hanna Ave., bordering East Tampa. The city also included local union apprentices in the project, which is required by city ordinance, after initially failing to do so. The community and council members asked who had approved the flawed project since last December, with the city attorneys saying they did not know who had. In April, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor finally admitted that she had approved it, after publicly calling for transparency and accountability from city council members. “The mayor talked about transparency and accountability,” Carlson said. “Let’s make sure that we’re being transparent and accountable in all these purchasing processes.”

Tampa Bay Times leaders say donations are an important and growing revenue stream to sustain journalism. By Ray Roa

n front of a packed ballroom at Ybor City’s Cuban Club last Friday, Tampa Bay Times leaders told politicos that an important and growing revenue stream for its award-winning journalism is donations. “We have two funds that go straight to the hiring and retention of our journalists: a journalism fund and an investigative fund. The dollars that were contributed last year to that investigative fund helped produce the work that won the Pulitzer Prize this year,” Conan Gallaty, who’ll step in as chairman of Times Publishing Co. this summer told the Tampa Bay Tiger Club, alluding to the “Poisoned” series about a Tampa lead smelter. Gallaty, who succeeds the paper’s outgoing and longest-running chairman Paul Tash, added that “We are finding people that are saying we believe in what you do. We’re willing to help fund that, and so I believe that that kind of fundraising for donations will really help keep journalism on solid footing.” Times spokesperson Sherri Day told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that since October 2019, those funds have raised more than $560,000 from 5,700 donors. Earlier this month, the Times reported that the sum of the costs for

One Tiger Bay member asked, “In this age of unbridled disinformation, why does the Times continue to print letters to the editor that are based on false premises?” Tash said he’d have to see the specific letter, but said that the Times does edit letters for clarity, brevity and accuracy. “But we try to be generous in our boundaries that we set because after all, we know we are one of the few voices around these days. And so we try to give people a chance to say what’s on their mind, in their words, even if it doesn’t conform to our view—especially if they don’t conform to our view,” Tash added. “I’d have to see that letter to see if we missed something or needed to set those boundaries a little tighter, but we do try to be generous in setting those boundaries.” Also notable was Tash taking a question about the Times’ inclusion and diversity standards. He did not dance around the fact that he, a white man who came after two white, male chairmen, was making way for Gallaty, another white man. In a previous interview with CL, Tash only said, “Through the years, women and Black

people have been very prominent among my considerations” when it came to his successor. But in front of Tiger Bay, he said he did consider a Black man and a white woman to succeed him, adding that the candidates, “through their own decisions and actions, took themselves out of consideration.” Outside of that, however, there weren’t a lot of specific, groundbreaking answers about the Times’ plans in the wake the last five years which have seen the paper endure not just the pandemic, but also staff buyouts, printing plant closure, layoffs, pay cuts, furloughs, print reduction, federal and private loans, plus the federal takeover of the Times’ pension fund. Last fall, many remaining staff members were asked to put their name on a public media style fundraiser that the Washington Post compared to Yelp. On Monday, the Times launched another round of “#itsyourtimes” that hopes to raise $50,000 over the span of a week. Only Tiger Bay Club members were allowed to ask questions during the session, but none pressed Tash and Gallaty about the Times’ relationship with investors who bailed the paper
out with a $15 million loan—although Tash mentioned Darryl Shaw, one of those investors who now also owns many properties near the Cuban Club. Also not breached in the Tiger Bay session was a new pattern of the paper’s bright stars leaving for other papers or PR (the Times’ longtime Deputy Editor of Photography, along with three reporters who participated in investigations which earned the Times’ last two Pulitzers, have recently left for ProPublica). Instead, members wanted to know if the paper—which says it has over 401,000 daily readers across its e-newspaper and print edition—would ditch its Wednesday and Sunday print schedule and move back to a seven-day print schedule (TLDR: Not likely anytime soon, but the Times does publish an e-edition of its newspaper seven days a week). And in the end, Tash was clear that he sees what’s happening at Times as a “season of renewal.” In his final comments, he pointed to Gallaty and said, “clearly the new guy is way more capable and credentialed than the old one.”

(In 1979, for instance, the Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution “does not prohibit Congress from assigning the fact finding function and initial adjudication to an administrative forum with which the jury would be incompatible.”) The third claim is more complicated. In 2018, the Supreme Court ruled that the SEC’s ALJs had to be appointed by commissioners, not staff. The Trump administration asked the court to eliminate the ALJs’ job protections—which were
seeking asylum at the border, ostensibly because of the pandemic. When the administration appeals, the case will go to the 5th Circuit. The White House probably isn’t in a hurry; it hasn’t figured out how to deal with the expected crush of asylum-seekers. But under the ruling’s logic, courts can halt the country’s asylum law indefinitely. And they might. The 5th Circuit just upended an administrative system in place since 1946 by inventing a legal doctrine that utterly disregards decades of precedent. It wasn’t the first time, nor will it be the last. Six of the court’s 17 active judges were appointed by Donald Trump. Five of them can unambiguously be described as radicals.

I
n 2013, the Securities and Exchange Commission charged George R. Jarkesy Jr., a Houston-area hedge fund manager and Republican donor, with defrauding investors. Jarkesy sued, arguing to a federal court in Washington, D.C. that the SEC proceedings violated his constitutional rights. No dice. He appealed to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. Same result. As with all SEC civil charges, the case went before an administrative law judge, who found Jarkesy liable and ordered him to pay back fines and “ill-gotten gains”—a little less than $1 million—and abstain from “associating with brokers, dealers, and advisers” and “serving as an officer or director of an advisory board or as an investment adviser.” Jarkesy appealed, arguing that the SEC had no authority to penalize him for rules infractions. SEC commissioners—drawing on Supreme Court decisions dating back decades—rejected a claim that is basically the stuff of sovereign citizen fever dreams. So Jarkesy ran to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, where sovereign citizen fever dreams come true. The 5th Circuit is where—as I mentioned last time—right-wing judges OK’d an absurd Texas law that prohibits social media companies from moderating Texas residents’ content. This is the court that tried to strike down the Affordable Care Act a decade after it passed under a legal theory a prominent conservative scholar called “ridiculous.” It’s the court that abruptly canceled district court hearings on Texas’ abortion ban so it could take effect without delay. And it’s the court that forbade United Airlines from enforcing its vaccination policy and said military personnel should be free to disobey an order to get a COVID shot, too. Any bets on how they ruled this time? In a 2-1 decision, appointees of Donald Trump and George W. Bush declared that the SEC’s system for enforcing its own rules is unconstitutional. If the Supreme Court takes them seriously —the same Supreme Court that’s about to overturn Roe, so it’s not out of the question—the ruling could cripple not only the SEC but the entire government. The 5th Circuit made three basic findings: All securities fraud cases must go before a federal jury, not an administrative law judge (ALJ); a law that allows the SEC to decide whether to take an enforcement action before a federal court or an ALJ is unconstitutional; and the existence of the SEC’s ALJ’s is unconstitutional because the president can’t fire them. In his dissent, Judge Eugene Davis, a Ronald Reagan appointee, pointed out that the first two assertions run counter to well-established
that the SEC wins “90% of the cases it brought before its ALJs, as compared with 69% of cases before district court judges.” That’s not really true, but it’s also not the point. Bankers know that forcing the SEC to take 700 cases a year to federal juries will break the system. There aren’t enough federal judges, and the likelihood that Republican senators will allow President Biden to appoint a hundred new judges is, well, not great. As a result, all but the most serious fraud cases would be ignored. That’s the goal. What this ruling would mean for the 2,000 ALJs scattered across more than 25 federal agencies—most handle Social Security benefits claims,

The 5th Circuit wasn’t so circumspect. If the decision stands, the two judges will have given Wall Street the virtually unregulated market that brokers crave and those of us who remember the 2008 crash dread. For years, the Chamber of Commerce has complained that the SEC’s ALJs are biased, arguing in a court brief
while other issue findings in environmental, labor, and housing disputes, as well—isn’t clear. But if everything they do has to go before a jury, too, regulations won’t be worth the paper they’re printed on. Again, that’s a feature, not a bug. Last Friday, another Trump appointee— District Court Judge Robert Summerhays—ordered the Biden administration to keep in place Title 42, a Trump-era order that prevents migrants from

Greetings St Pete Pride Community! Tiffany Freisberg, Board President It’s the 20-year anniversary of St Pete Pride! I feel humbled to sit in the seat of Board President in this landmark moment for our organization and our city. While ‘Board President’ may sound like a lofty title, the reality is this: I’m one of the many hundreds of volunteers who have shown up over the last two decades to link arms with like-minded people and do the hard and joyous work of creating the kind of community we want to live in and share with others. Twenty years ago, while I was a teenager in London, England, a handful of people across the Atlantic in St. Petersburg, Florida were figuring out what to do in the aftermath of Tampa Pride, which had been crushed by a city commissioner who felt that Pride had no place in Tampa Bay. Rather than retreat back into the shadows or even move away from Florida to a more queer-friendly city, a handful of bold visionaries in the LGBTQ+ community decided to hunker down and raise the rainbow flag even higher on the other side of the bay: St Pete Pride was born! In the two decades since its launch, the work of thousands of volunteers and partners has not only grown St Pete Pride to become one of the top 15-largest Pride celebrations in the country but has also been instrumental in shaping the social and cultural landscape of the city as a whole. St. Pete continues to evolve as a bastion of diverse and progressive values in the South, drawing a staggering number of new residents to the area from all over the world, like me, each year. The 20th Anniversary season will be St Pete Pride’s most ambitious, inclusive and diverse yet. Along with the parade, a month of celebrations will include a Friday Night Concert featuring Todrick Hall and Pussy Riot, a family day for LGBTQ+ youth, families and allies, St Pete Pride’s second official Juneteenth event, and intimate events at The Palladium with cultural icons Sandra Bernhard and Carson Kressley. In a moment when Florida is the national epicenter of LGBTQ+ legislative backlash, the mission of St Pete Pride is more crucial than ever. As Florida’s largest Pride, we have a powerful platform for providing representation, love and support for the most vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ community. Since last season, we’ve expanded our all-volunteer Board of Directors to a diverse group of ten and brought in a dynamic new Executive Director, Nicole Berman. Dozens of partners and community sponsors have stepped up to lend support. Our team of volunteers is wider and deeper than it’s ever been, and we welcome ALL who want to get involved. Last year at the family event, a young girl bounded up to me while I worked the merch table and asked if I was one of the people organizing the event. When I told her I was, she gave me a huge smile and outstretched her hand, which was holding a painted, handmade, rainbow clay heart that read “PRIDE.” She told me it was her first Pride ever and that she was so happy to be there, and she thanked me for all I did to make it possible. For the past year, that heart has hung in my kitchen. My wife, three daughters and I talk about it regularly. It’s why I sometimes can’t be home for dinner. Or have to stay up extra late working. It’s why I sometimes can’t join in at Mario Kart, or be the one to pick them up from practice. It’s a symbol of the honor and necessity of serving others. For me, the heart that hangs in our kitchen represents the heart of St Pete Pride. Every Pride is someone’s first Pride, and creating that experience for people is an enormous privilege. If LGBTQ+ kids, youth, and adults alike are relying on Pride to be one of the only places that they feel safe being their most authentic selves throughout the year, then we’re going to make absolutely sure that Pride Month is the best, happiest, most diverse, and love-filled place it possibly can be. We hope that you will attend this year and agree!

Dear Pride Community Nicole Berman, Executive Director As one of the area’s newer transplants, I drove from Seattle to St. Petersburg, picturing an idyllic setting nestled between the Bay and Gulf, lined with palm trees, white sand beaches, and rainbow flags. Once I arrived, I was not disappointed. I was delighted to find an eclectic mix of people, spaces, art, entertainment, experiences, food and drink within a quick drive to the beach. What has made St. Pete truly special for me was the warmth with which I was embraced, not only as a new resident, but as a member of the queer community. I’ve had the opportunity to live all across the country, and I’ve never felt as welcome as queer person as I do in St. Pete. This speaks volumes about the beauty and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community in the area. To stand so proudly in a time that often tells you not to is an act of bravery and love not to be overlooked. The people of St Pete are the reason it is such a gem, and I am incredibly excited to be part of a city and an organization that embraces that spirit. This year’s Pride is on track to be the biggest and best yet, embracing all of the incredible individuals who created, built, grew, enjoy, and love St Pete Pride. I am honored to be part of an organization that wants to be better, that strives to hear from those that historically have not been represented by Pride, and I am proud that those voices and stories will lead our organization into its 20th Anniversary season and beyond. Pride, as an event, means so much to me. I remember my first Pride and how it felt to look up and be surrounded by people who represented me. That is an experience St Pete Pride aims to replicate for all LGBTQ+ people in and around the Tampa Bay area. No matter what the outside world is telling you, you belong here, you belong with us, not only in June but all year long. St Pete Pride will continue to work outside of June with our outstanding community partners to ensure the visibility afforded to us lasts long after the glitter is swept off the parade route. St Pete Pride is all of ours. It is the culmination of our right to exist in our bodies in whatever way we see fit. It is a reminder to everyone that we belong here and are not going anywhere. It is a time when we all fit in, we move safely together, and we don’t back down to the pressure to conform. It is a moment, set aside from everything else that is going on in the world, to celebrate the amazing people in our community and bask in our collective joy. In 2022 the importance of St Pete Pride cannot be overlooked and I look forward to sharing Pride with you!

Clifford Hobbs III is a native of Des Moines, Iowa who moved to St. Petersburg 9 years ago by way of Atlanta, GA where he lived for 8 years. Clifford is a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School and has worked as a Chef, Server and Bartender in the hospitality industry for over 20 years. Clifford enjoys serving his community in a plethora of different ways and was once a candidate for St. Pete City Council back in 2021. Clifford lives with his partner Patrick along with their 3 fur babies.
Darius Lightsey He/Him/His BOARD MEMBER
Darius C. Lightsey is a native of Winter Haven, FL who has called St. Petersburg home since 2018. Darius is a proud graduate of Florida State University and has worked in the area of Mental Health/Public Health for over 10 years. Darius relocated to St. Pete. from Tallahassee, FL to work as the HIV/AIDS Program Manager for the Florida Department of Health-Pinellas leading the effort to reduce new incidences of HIV acquisition in an 8 county service delivery area.

Originally from Ecuador, Fernando has been calling St Pete home since 2019, (though he fell in love with the city back in 2012.) Fernando worked for St Pete Pride in 2019 as the Development Director and is thrilled to be back on the Board giving back to the community and advocating to continue making St Pete Pride a more inclusive organization and celebration. Fernando’s also a Contemporary Dancer with local St. Pete dance company, ProjectAlchemy Dance.

Gabe was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His has a bachelor’s degree in International studies from the University of South Florida and has also earned extensive studies in Global Leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Gabe has found his life passion in real estate, where he takes pride in helping each and every client achieve all their real estate needs and dreams. Gabe and his husband Aron Tomko live in Gulfport. For the past 22 years Gabe has lived in the Tampa Bay Area where he is heavily involved in many organizations such as Balance Tampa Bay, Gulfport Chamber of Commerce, The Krewe of Cavaliers and the Diversity Chamber of Commerce. His strong involvement in the community and the length of
time he has lived in the Tampa Bay Area has allowed Gabe to build a valuable network of resources and friendships.

A born and raised Floridian, Stephanie relocated to the Tampa Bay area in 2002 and graduated from USF Tampa with a degree in Finance. She currently leads Power Design Inc’s Learning & Development dept and serves on their DEI committee. Stephanie has also volunteered her time to Habitat for Humanity, SPCA Tampa Bay, USF’s Women in Leadership & Philanthropy (WLP), and Empath Partners in Care (EPIC). Most recently, she joined the board for CASA Pinellas and St Pete Pride.

Pride Swells in St. Pete Since Its 2003 Origin By Brian Longstreth
We were on such a short time frame, having a community meeting in late February of 2003, and starting essentially from zero. People of all backgrounds jumped in and provided expertise in marketing, sponsorship, parade planning, and vendor management. We were planning on maybe 100 people participating in the newly named Promenade, It wasn’t a parade or a march, but free for anyone to participate. It started in Historic Kenwood in front of the old Georgies Alibi which had become a fixture in the community as a bar and restaurant. The promenade wound through Historic Kenwood and then on to Central Avenue heading East towards the Street Festival in the 2400 and 2500 blocks of Central. About 50 vendors lined the two blocks as the parade and large 400 foot rainbow flag was unfurled. With no experience to go on, and no social media (pre-facebook) to help gauge the response we were expecting maybe 2000-2500 people to show up. Throughout the day people kept arriving and swamping the few bars and restaurants in the Grand Central District. All told an estimated 10,000 attended the inaugural event, and we knew we had a good model for success. Free to attend, affordable for small business to participate, and sponsors to cover the costs. Attendance doubled almost every year to quickly become the largest Pride celebration in Florida by 2007. In 2007 representatives from St Pete Pride attended the InterPride conference in Zurich Switzerland and won the right to host InterPride 2009. St Pete Pride had become a model for many other Pride organizations by focusing on local support and inclusive policies. Our Mayor at the time was conservative, but didn’t seem to mind as long as the events were in the Grand Central District.

Pussy Riot Conceptual artist and activist Nadya Tolokonnikova is the founding member of Pussy Riot, a global feminist protest art movement. Today, hundreds of people identify as a part of the Pussy Riot community. In 2012, Nadya was sentenced to two years in prison following an anti-Putin performance. Her body of work in television and film for which she is known include TransMe, The Lady in the Locket (2017), The Comedy Show (2016), Zola (2021) and Bros. (2022). You can also catch Madison on RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked! In 2019, TS Madison was honored in the Out Magazine as one of the top 100 influential LGBT people. Madison has built her social media influencer name by walking in her unapologetic truth, as an openly transgender.
SHAED: Multi-platinum D.C. trio SHAED spent much of 2018 and 2019 supporting their global breakout single “Trampoline.” With nearly 2 billion streams to-date, “Trampoline” first made waves after being featured in a MacBook Air ad campaign for Apple, which lead to feverish radio play. In free moments between international festival dates and headline tours, SHAED found themselves co-writing on the road with renowned songwriters and producers, creating an album-worth of songs under the pressure of following-up their first commercial hit. SHAED’s debut album -- High Dive was released in May 2021. The album features collaborations with Two Feet, Lewis Del Mar, and the newer version of their breakout single Trampoline featuring ZAYN. I moved to St. Pete a couple years ago carrying with me a lifetime of DEI experience and the sincere desire to make my new home, inclusivity-wise, as much of a utopia as the beautiful beaches and smiling faces suggested it should be. Discovering my own Queerness years ago inspired a joy and freedom in me that I had never known in my life before it. Sadly, it was always hampered by the incredible oppression that came with the world’s opinion of it and the shade of my skin. Intersectionality became my life and was fated to also be my work. I am a native New Yorker, where LGBTQ+ laws and protections are groundbreaking on paper but not so profound in practice. Where just like the South or the West or anywhere in between, being Black as well as being Queer can get you killed. I came to my new home armed with experience, passion and purpose. I was ready to take on my new Floridian world and to be entirely honest, St. Pete Pride. I had turned several other Prides and organizations. I, along with a team of dedicated staff and determined volunteers were able to change the look of entertainment, of staff, of the color of the people at the table. We had made the orgs we interacted with, for the most part, Blacker, broader, less cis and less male focused. I was determined that the same could happen in St. Pete. Each time we can make the big, queer world big enough to fit everyone, we make the world a better place. Generally speaking, it’s easy when you are the big fish in the small pond to take up all the air, resources and recognition in the room. St. Pete Pride had intentionally or unintentionally done that for many years. But it’s often less malice and more lack of intentionality that causes such oversight and exclusion. I was actually told at one point last year that there were no people or programs that supported, represented or served the QTPOC community in this area. Over the last year I was honored and grateful to learn that wasn’t true. As is everywhere, there are endless Black and Brown folks fearlessly doing the work to make that big queer world big enough to fit us all. I’d like to introduce a few. 2022 introduced six new Board Members of color to St. Pete Pride and the City of St. Petersburg: Dr. Byron Green, Clifford Hobbs III, Darius Lightsey, Fernando Chonqui, Gabe Alves-Tomko and Stephanie Morge. It matters. Who is at the table always matters. Each of us carries blind-spots and without full representation in every space, something always goes unseen. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work must come with overwhelming humility, the ability to name and acknowledge what you haven’t done and a sincere, fearless willingness to make it right. That must come even in the face of opposition, misunderstanding and embarrassment. For those who step in first to integrate that school, to come out in a crowd, to fight that legislation…. to take that seat, must do so fearlessly and 76

often without thanks. They must push through the Queer community who won’t ever fully accept them and the Communities of Color who equate their queerness with whiteness. In some circles they won’t be remembered, but history will never forget. Thank you. And of those Black-Queer orgs that I was told didn’t exist, who have done the work and carried the flag for eternity- I salute you. The proverbial descendants of Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson who are the reason we have a Pride to celebrate or the right to live authentically at all. Folks like Rocky Butler and India Torrez who co-chair the People’s Council, the independent DEIA team that stands to hold St. Pete Pride accountable and consistently raising the bar higher in terms of equity. In addition, the newly formed BLaQQueer Unity Council, a collaborative comprised of Black and Brown Queer leadership dedicated to coordinating, innovating and collaborating on projects that support, empower and engage with Black Queer communities within Central Florida. This group of community leaders who have come together to support, empower and uplift each other and community define what it means to be fully representative and fight for it from their corners of the Bay each and every day. in our community and working to embody the principles of our ancestors with grit and grace. Look them up, support their visions and if your party, panel, presentation or event that centers Queerness doesn’t include one or all of them- you didn’t try hard enough. The corner St. Pete Pride is turning is long overdue. The letting go of “we don’t see color’ and the adopting of celebrating, commemorating and uplifting a profound, important and inherently unique Black Queer qulture is a new one. This year St. Pete Pride will feature Ballroom (think POSE), one of the pillars of Black Queer qulture. There will be the 1st ever
official Juneteenth celebration to highlight Black, Queer history and a party to celebrate and honor Black Queer Woman in collaboration with the Tampa Bay Black Lesbians group. I’m proud to have played even a small part in that and I look forward to a future where it’s a conversation we no longer even need to have because it’s just what St. Pete Pride is. But even the baby steps matter. There is too much fighting that needs to be done in this state to be living in division. No one is free, until we are all free. And I hope to hear “Black Lives Matter” being shouted just as loudly as “We Say Gay” this Pride parade. May St. Pete Pride one day be the organization leading both of those chants.

Know Your Pride Flags LGBTQ/Gay The iconic rainbow pride flag was designed by Gilbert Baker for the 1978 San Francisco Gay Freedom Day celebration. He wanted the flag to be a symbol of hope and liberation, and an alternative to the symbolism of the pink triangle. In the original eight-color version, pink stood for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for the sun, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit.
Agender The agender pride flag, created by Salem X in 2014, has seven horizontal stripes. The black and white stripes represent an absence of gender, the gray represents semi-genderlessness, and the central green stripe represents nonbinary genders.
Aromantic The aromantic pride flag consists of five horizontal stripes: green, light green, white, gray, and black. In this order, the stripes represent aromanticism, the aromantic spectrum, aesthetic attraction, gray-aromantic and demiromantic people, and the sexuality spectrum.
Bisexual The bisexual pride flag, designed by Michael Page, was first unveiled on December 5, 1998. Its aim was to represent and increase visibility of bisexuals in the LGBT community and society as a whole. This rectangular flag consists of a broad magenta stripe at the top, a broad blue stripe at the bottom, and a narrower, deep lavender band occupying the central fifth. Page stated, “The pink color represents sexual attraction to the same sex only (gay and lesbian). The blue represents sexual attraction to the opposite sex only (straight) and the resultant overlap color purple represents sexual attraction to both sexes (bi).”
Asexual The asexual pride flag was created in 2010 by an Asexual Visibility and Education Network user. It consists of four horizontal stripes; the black stripe represents asexuality, the gray stripe represents gray-asexuals and demisexuals, the white stripe represents allies, and the purple stripe represents community.
Demisexual The term demisexuality was coined in 2008 by Asexual Visibility and Education Network. The prefix “demi” is derived from the Latin term dimidium meaning “divided in half.” The term demisexual refers to being halfway between sexual and asexual. A demisexual person is someone who can only experience sexual attraction or desire after an emotional bond has been formed. In the demisexual flag, the black chevron represents asexuality, gray represents gray asexuality and demisexuality, white represents sexuality, and purple represents community.
Genderfluid JJ Poole created the genderfluid pride flag in 2012. It has five horizontal stripes: pink for femininity, blue for masculinity, purple for both masculinity and femininity, black for lack of gender, and white for all genders.
Genderqueer Marilyn Roxie, a genderqueer writer and advocate, created the genderqueer pride flag in 2011. The lavender stripe is a mix of blue and pink—colors traditionally associated with men and women—and represents androgyny as well as queer identities. The white stripe, like in the transgender pride flag, represent agender or gender-neutral identities. The chartreuse stripe is the inverse of lavender and represents third gender identities and identities outside the gender binary. 72

Intersex The intersex flag was created in July 2013 by Morgan Carpenter of Intersex Human Rights Australia. Interex people do not exhibit all the biological characteristics of male or female, or they exhibit a combination of male and female characteristics, at birth. The purple circle symbolizes wholeness and completeness and is a reference to the intersex community’s fight for bodily autonomy and integrity.
Lesbian (labrys design) The labrys lesbian flag was created in 1999 by graphic designer Sean Campbell, and published in June 2000 in the Palm Springs edition of the Gay and Lesbian Times Pride issue.The design involves a labrys, a type of double-headed axe, superimposed on the downward-pointing black triangle, set against a violet background. The labrys was associated with the mythological Amazons and was adopted as a symbol of empowerment by the lesbian feminist community in the 1970s. The black triangle is a reference to the downward-pointing black triangle lesbians were made to wear in Nazi Germany. The color violet is associated with lesbians due to the poetry of Sappho.
Lesbian This version of the lesbian flag is a derivative of an earlier “lipstick lesbian” flag that had shades of pink with a red lipstick mark. It was introduced on Tumblr in 2018, with the color dark orange representing gender nonconformity, orange for independence, light orange for community, white for unique relationships to womanhood, pink for serenity and peace, dusty pink for love and sex, and dark rose for femininity.
Non-binary Kye Rowan created the non-binary flag in 2014. Each stripe’s color represents a different type of non-binary identity: yellow for people who identify outside of the gender binary, white for non-binary people with multiple genders, purple for those with a mixture of both male and female genders, and black for agender individuals.
Pansexual The pansexual pride flag was introduced in October 2010 in a Tumblr blog. It has three horizontal stripes: the pink represents attraction to women, the blue represents attraction to men, and the yellow represents attraction to everyone else, such as non-binary, agender, bigender, or genderfluid people.
Polysexual The colors and design of the polysexual flag are based on the pansexual and bisexual pride flags, borrowing the pink and blue stripes and replacing the yellow and purple stripes with a single green stripe. Polysexuality is a self-identifying term that is somewhat amorphous. Polysexual identity is often related to gender identity and is used by some people who identify outside the gender binary. People who refer to themselves as polysexual may be attracted to third gender people, two-spirit people, genderqueer people, or people who are intersex. Polysexuality can be the exclusive attraction towards non-binary genders or sexes, or polysexual people l may be attracted to one or both binary genders or sexes.
Transgender A transgender woman, Monica Helms, designed the transgender pride flag in 1999. The flag represents the transgender community and consists of five horizontal stripes: two light blue, two pink, with a white stripe in the center. Helms described the meaning of the flag as follows: “The stripes at the top and bottom are light blue, the traditional color for baby boys. The stripes next to them are pink, the traditional color for baby girls. The stripe in the middle is white, for those who are intersex, transitioning or consider themselves having a neutral or undefined gender. The pattern is such that no matter which way you fly it, it is always correct, signifying us finding correctness in our lives.” stpetepride.org

A beloved Seminole Heights restaurants reinvents itself as ‘Chanko.’ By Kyla Fields
“I
dozen homemade sauces. The Chanko menu is smaller, more refined, and revolves around a traditional Japanese dish that Sera says cannot be found anywhere else in the Southeastern part of the country, let alone Florida. Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki (also known as “Japanese pizza”)—a layered crepe dish stacked with shredded grilled cabbage, bean sprouts, leeks, grilled noodles, a fried egg sheet and a choice of protein—is the absolute star of Chanko’s brand new menu.

’m nervous—but really excited. If I wasn’t nervous, I think I’d be an idiot,” chef Steve Sera says about his upcoming plunge into new culinary and operational territory. Although Chop Chop Shop customers were dismayed by his seemingly abrupt decision to close the popular Asian fusion restaurant, he’s hoping that they’ll stick around for his brand new concept opening out of the same Seminole Heights space at 4603 N Florida Ave. Sera’s new restaurant Chanko will debut out of the familiar refurbished diner car with a brand new menu, unprecedented approach to fast casual dining, and the support of his entire former Chop Chop Shop staff. We sat down at the iconic Elvis booth—where the rock star sat and ate his favorite sandwich after a Tampa show in 1956—and discussed the plans for Sera’s newest concept while power tools, half-finished cups of boba and electrical equipment laid around nearby. Chanko will boast a unique type of fast casual dining, as self-service kiosks and a pickup counter will replace the need for front of house employees. The kitchen will split any other expected FOH responsibilities, like wiping tables down or assisting customers. “It’s gotten harder post-Covid to even find people who want to work the front of house, and as an employer I don’t really want to require a position that makes someone susceptible to beratement like that, ” Sera tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “At the end of the day, our new business model does not have the need for a front of house person.” Although there won’t be a host to greet you when you walk into Chanko, don’t expect its friendly atmosphere to go anywhere. “Chanko” translated from Japanese means “parents to children” and typically describes foods made by sumo wrestlers (aka chanko-nabe) that they prepare and eat together,” a recent Facebook post from Sera reads. “For our purpose, it’s meant to describe our restaurant culture. Cook together, eat together.” Besides a brand new sign out front, a new pickup counter, and more self-service POS systems, there won’t be many physical changes to the inside of the refurbished diner. Chop Chop Shop’s Asian fusion menu, however, will be replaced with a refreshing take on traditional Japanese flavors. Gone are the days of Chop Chop’s customizable bowls, twice-fried karaage and almost a

Chop Chop Shop regulars, however, will be delighted to see its popular Chop Chop and teriyaki sauces make their return on Chanko’s menu. Sides include rice, kimchi, tiger slaw (think Asian coleslaw), cucumber-wakame salad and crunchy Japanese pickles. Alongside its entrees will be a wide variety of both Japanese and local beer, wine, soda, sake, and for the first time, boba. Sera notes that customers would regularly request something
THE SIGNS ARE THERE: Same address, different menu at Chanko, from the owner of Chop Chop Shop. After shutting Chop Chop Shop doors in late April, Sera flew his chefs to L.A. to do some research on Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. They visited Chinchikurin, a newly-opened restaurant in Little Tokyo that specializes in this specific dish—one of the only ones in the country, according to Sera. Regular okonomiyaki is a savory pancake with its ingredients incorporated into the batter (similar to the scallion pancake popular in other Asian cuisines), while the Hiroshima style specifically boasts the layered technique. A dish that typically takes over 10 minutes to prepare will come out of the Chanko kitchen in five
on the sweeter side, but says he “doesn’t mess with desserts, so boba is a good compromise.” Notably, every Chop Chop Shop chef has stuck through the transition with him, currently helping him tweak their new kitchen setup for maximum efficiency. He says that one of the motivating factors behind Chanko’s simple menu was to lessen the physical and mental stress on his chefs. With Chanko’s refined menu, less technical skills are used, while less strenuous labor is applied on its chefs. And since okonomiyaki is cooked at a lower temperature, they will be standing over a
300-degree grill instead of a 500-degree one—a slight change that will make all the difference, Sera says. Continuing the theme of less strenuous labor, Sera will continue the four-day workweek for his employees at the new restaurant. As part of the plan, which included increased wages, Sera was able to get his front of house staff a four-day workweek as well. Most of his employees preferred the “three-day weekend,” although he notes that some of his younger chefs actually preferred to work more than 40 hours a week. Although the four-day workweek and self-service kiosks are changes that were successfully incorporated into the Chop Chop Shop business model, Sera is unsure about how tips will be affected by the lack of FOH staff. As the new concept transitions into full service, he will initially pay his employees their current wages ( including expected tips) and wait to see if their customers tip as much as they did at Chop Chop. The pandemic and its industry-changing effects have made him realize that Chanko’s business model might be the future of quick service restaurants—but success will only come with experimenting, reflecting, and making collaborative changes when needed. “Ever since the pandemic, 42% of our sales are through UberEats or Doordash, and a half of our in-house orders are either placed online or over the phone for pickup,” he explains. “Weekends are more dine-in, but our delivery numbers haven’t really dropped at all.” After Seminole Heights’ newest restaurant debuts this weekend, it will initially be open from 5 p.m.-2 a.m. Tuesday-Sunday, in addition to being available on third party apps like Uber Eats, Doordash and Grubhub. Although the plunge to start a brand new restaurant revolving around a relatively unknown Japanese dish was intimidating at first, Sera was compelled to make a drastic change when he realized that Chop Chop Shop had reached its maximum potential. It took him about seven years to build the team he has today, and starkly accepted the fact that the Chop Chop business model couldn’t be replicated. Instead of opening a second restaurant, he knew he needed a brand new concept . “Finally I was just like fuck it,” he says with a pause. “Yeah…fuck it. It’s my restaurant and I can do what I want,” Sera says with a laugh. “I think this model is here to stay, and we’re about to find out, because I’m about to do it.” Chanko’s soft opening is set for Friday, May 27; more details will be released on Facebook (@ chankoichiban).

An Asian fusion pop-up leads new round of Bay area food news. By Kyla Fields

ampa’s most prized Asian fusion small plates are back, but there are only two opportunities to snag them. Good Fortune Baby’s Instagram recently announced its popup schedule for the next few weeks—which include May 27at Cafe Hey (1540 N Franklin St., Tampa) for the “Bloom on Franklin” market, as well as on June 4 at Crowbar (1812 N 17th St., Ybor City) for Emo Night Tampa ‘s anniversary show. With the help of her mom and other family members, Good Fortune Baby’s Julie Sainte usually sells out of her dumplings, buns, and other Filipino-inspired small plates quickly—so make sure to get to those pop-ups a little early. Good Fortune Baby recently posted a sneak peek of its menu for next week’s 7 p.m. pop-up at Cafe Hey, which includes new plant-based Filipino “chicken” BBQ skewers in addition to thick pancit-filled dumplings and peppercorn pork dumplings. One of the newest addition to its small, refined menu includes an 100% plantbased oyster mushroom siopao bun with fresh cucumber, vegan calamansi-garlic aioli, crispy shallots, and green papaya relish. Sainte notes that she strives to find a good balance between meat and plant-based options on the Good Fortune Baby menu. Fans of the popup remember GFB’s soup dumplings filled with tinola—a gingery Filipino soup —as well as its fresh lumpia and crispy vegan sisig, a dish usually made with various cuts of pork ( and are probably wishing for their return.) Alongside its made-toorder small plates are its numbing chili oil and pickled papaya, available for purchase in to-go jars. When Creative Loafing asked Sainte if there was any more information to add about her Tampa-based fusion pop-up, she responded “maybe that there’s a brick and mortar on the way!” More information via @goodfortunebabe on Instagram.

Although the options for pierogies seem rather extensive, a representative of the restaurant tells CL that an even larger menu is still in the works. Pierogi Bar owner Daryna Voloshyn was making and selling her prized pierogis out of her home, cottage kitchen-style, until the recent acquisition of the Central Avenue restaurant. Ukrainian restaurant Pierogi Bar is now open in St. Petersburg Adorned with blue and yellow balloons near the entrance, a self-described “first and best Ukrainian restaurant in St. Petersburg” is now open at 6661 Central Ave. Adjacent to Treasure Island Beach and Gulfport, the aptly-named Pierogi Bar boasts a small, straightforward menu filled with variations of the Eastern European delicacy. There are many types of fillings for its pierogis, ranging from savory options like the traditional potato and cheese to sauerkraut and mushrooms. Other dishes on the newly-opened restaurant’s menu include fried potato pancakes,
Sunda New Asian restaurant will open in Midtown Tampa this year With the recent debut of modern Japanese eatery Noble Rice and Chef Richard Hales’ Blackbrick on the way, Tampa is quickly becoming a hot spot for high-end Asian cuisine. A press release says that Midtown Tampa—one of downtown’s fastest growing areas—will soon be the home to Florida’s very first Sunda New Asian restaurant, slated to open towards the end of 2022. Midtown Tampa’s newest Asian eatery will occupy the space adjacent to The Loft and Element hotels. Although an exact address of the upcoming Sunda location will be easily accessible from the Midtown Tampa commons, an outdoor space where activities are typically held. Sunda is the culinary brainchild of actor,

guests can eventually expect a more extensive menu, outdoor seating, and a return of its delivery services. BEYOND BEYOND: 100% plant-based oyster mushroom siopao from Good Fortune Baby. a Mediterranean-American eatery that closed earlier this month when Voloshyn officially took over—although she is still working on getting the Pierogi Bar sign up. Before the recentlyacquired brick and mortar, her customers placed bulk orders via phone and either picked them up at her house or got their pierogies delivered. Back in March, Voloshyn started a fundraiser to help raise money for her debut brick-and-mortar. “This project will be our flagship restaurant with an opportunity to replicate in more regions to showcase the true regional diversity we have with our historical and cultural Ukrainian foods,” the GoFundMe reads. “Once opened, Pierogi Bar will dedicate a part of its revenue to help those who suffered from war in Ukraine.” The restaurant is still in its soft opening period as it transitions into full service, but
entrepreneur and restaurateur Billy Dec, who opened the flagship location in his hometown of Chicago. It’s only other location opened in Nashville in 2018, although an Eater article from last year states that Dec plans to open Sunda locations throughout the country. The Filipino actor, who is known for his work on shows like “Criminal Minds” and “Empire,” has several other businesses in addition to the restaurants. Dec also founded The Underground Nightclub and Cocktail Club and the advertising agency COACT, according to the biography on his website. Drawing from the multifaceted cuisines of countries like China, Japan, Korea, The Philippines , Thailand and beyond, Sunda’s menu is a true culmination of Asian fusion. There’s even a $150 Filipino feast of meats, seafood, rice and egg rolls served on a giant banana leaf—but you will have to get your hands a little dirty. Sunda’s exclusive “east meets west” brunch menu is stacked with unique dishes like tempura french toast, crispy eggplant bao buns and its signature bright purple ube waffles. “By seamlessly melding most of the cooking techniques and flavors found throughout the entirety of Asia, Sunda creates a menu that allows customers to choose the dining experience they desire,” the restaurant’s website reads. Beer, wine and a curated selection of cocktails also occupy a portion of the Sunda menu, stacked with signature drinks like its Lychee Luxury Drop— complete with vodka, elderberry liqueur, lemon and lychee wasabi syrup. Sunda New Asian will be joined by Midtown Tampa’s other recently–opened restaurants True Food Kitchen, Don’t Kale Me Crazy and Oronzo, among others. There are no social media handles for Tampa’s upcoming Sunda just yet, but you can get a good idea of its menu by following its Facebook at @sundachicago.
The new menu obviously showcases its freshcaught goodies, as you can order raw oysters, steamed clams or shrimp, poke bowls and I.C . Shark’s famous smoked fish dip alongside bar food offerings like BLT’s and other sandwiches. The outdoor bar also sells various types of beer, wine, and expected cocktails, as well. And if you don’t have time to sit down and lounge at the newly-opened bar and restaurant, the I.C. Sharks market sells ready made foods like that fish dip and steamed shrimp alongside raw seafood offerings. The flagship I.C. Sharks joint was located at 13040 Gandy Blvd., but moved down the road to its current space in 2018 after encountering issues with zoning. According to a Tampa Bay Times, the previous I.C. Sharks location was temporarily shut down multiple times regarding problems with building, water navigation and zoning regulations, racking up liens that added up to over $1 million. The seafood market itself is pretty straight forward and features all of the in-season fish and shellfish—although this new I.C. Sharks location does not sell bait like its predecessor. Expect freshly-caught seafood like stone crab, grouper, shrimp, oysters, salmon and mussels—although it is recommended to call ahead to make sure they aren’t sold-out for the day.

Sharks is known for freshly-caught fish and shellfish, and now caters to seafood-lovers that don’t feel like cooking their own dinners. The popular market soft-opened its outdoor bar and restaurant this week to the delight of loyal patrons, located directly behind the seafood market at 10020 Gandy Blvd. N in St. Petersburg. It’s currently open ThursdayFriday from 4 p.m.-9 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. It’s Facebook—where it also posts the catches of the day—says operating hours will expand soon.

Chvrches Next year will mark a decade since Scottish synthpop sensation Chvrches first hit airwaves, and the group is no stranger to Tampa Bay. Its resume around these parts includes a 2015 Halloween show at Jannus and a slot on the 2018 97X NBT bill, opening for Young The Giant. Lauren Mayberry & co. promote a new album, Screen Violence, at this one that’ll hopefully be a sort-of career retrospective, too. (Jannus Live, St. Petersburg)

C Robert Earl Keen w/Kelsey Waldon They say that the road goes on forever, and yet everybody’s favorite Houston-bred singer-songwriter is ready to call it a day. One minute, Robert Earl Keen opened for Kris Kristofferson in downtown Clearwater in January 2020, and the next, he’s preparing to join his buddy in retirement. While no one knows for sure if the 66-year-old is going to stop recording and writing, you might as well pretend he is when he stops at Tampa Theatre, which somehow isn’t fully sold out. If you care anything about country music, you’ll get to the show early to see Kelsey Waldon, a Kentucky songwriter who’s injecting the genre with new ideas bouyed by a classic sound that’s poised to make a lot of noise when she releases her new album, No Regular Dog, on Aug. 12 via the late John Prine’s Oh Boy Record label (there’s even an ode to Prine, a former Gulfport resident, on the record). Ricardo Arjona The last two years of the prolific performer’s life have seen him indulge in 2020’s Blanco, and 2021’s Negro. The works have been referred to as Arjona’s magnum opus, and in February, he plans to release a combined CD set, containing both albums together, plus a 216-page book that revolves around the origins of the album.
Also included in Blanco y Negro Libro will be photos that span his entire life. Arjona also had “Hecho a la Antigua,” an acoustic, live stream concert from 2021 up for Best Latin Pop Album at the Grammys this year. Not that he won, though. He hasn’t won anything in that—or any—category since 2007. (Yuengling Center, Tampa) TechN9ne w/Joey Cool/XRaided/¡Mayday! Some people at Albany’s Empire Live just tested positive for COVID-19, forcing Tech N9ne to postpone the Albany stop on his current Asin9ne tour. for the second time in a year. Orpheum moves out of Ybor City this weekend. By Ray Roa
T
he end of an era in Ybor City arrives this week when Orpheum hosts its last concert and dance party ahead of a move 10 miles north. The sold-out, May 25 show from Suicide Silence was the final concert at Orpheum in Ybor, and Emo Night Brooklyn’s Friday, May 27 dance party is the last time doors will open at 1915 E 7th Ave. Orpheum owner Jerry “Lazy” Dufrain told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that he fully expects the new location—at 14802 N Nebraska Ave. in Tampa, a five-minute walk from Skipper’s Smokehouse—to be ready for a soft-opening when California punk band Destroy Boys plays on June 11. Longtime fans of Orpheum in Ybor City should probably circle July 2’s Valient Thorr concert, too. The hard-partying North Carolina metal band has played some of the most epic shows in Tampa Bay and will no doubt break the new Orpheum in proper. “I’m definitely sad. I’ve lived in Tampa proper for 22 years and much of my musical life, my friends, are in Ybor City.” Dufrain said about the relocation. “But I’m excited, too. I mean, when we were told the news about moving it was a shock, because it’s always going to be a shock, but it’s not like I didn’t think about it over the last few years considering the way the neighborhood was going.” Dufrain—who’s had a crew working on the renovations since he got the keys to the old Southern Ground Brick Bar & Party Deck
early this year—would not talk about the potential capacity on the record, but said the new Orpheum will be an indoor-outdoor venue not unlike Stubb’s BBQ, which is one of the most iconic venues in Austin, Texas. He’ll keep the back wooden patio and has ESI working on the sound system. The bar staff from Orpheum in Ybor City is coming with him to the new North Tampa location, which is very close to Skipper’s, Brass Mug and just a short drive away from Pegasus Lounge. “There’s four live music venues pretty much right next to each other here, and it’s a 10, 11-minute drive from Ybor—I know because I’ve been doing it nonstop,” Dufrain said. This isn’t the first move for Orpheum either. In 2011, it relocated from a small corner parcel at the corner of 8th St. and Avenida Republica de Cuba to Seventh Avenue. Over the course of 20 years, Orpheum has hosted thousands of bands in both its venues, including The Killers who played a last-minute set there in November 2019. When it moves out of the district, Ybor will be without a venue to accommodate shows too big for Crowbar (under 400 capacity) and too small for The Ritz (1,100 plus). “When I moved out of my old house to my new one, I said I’d rather be rolled out then move again,” Dufrain said about his affinity for moving. “But we’re putting our backpacks on and marching out of Ybor, ready for this exciting new chapter.”

Lady A—a seven-time Grammy-winner formerly known as Lady Antebellum—has been in headlines since 2020 after changing its name, which alluded to a time in American history before slavery was outlawed. In changing it name, Lady A adopted the moniker of blues songwriter Anita White who’d been performing as Lady A for nearly three decades. White asked for payment, and the multi-platinum country group filed a lawsuit, and white once even said Lady A was trying to erase her. In February, the sides reached a settlement; terms are undisclosed but White did release her ninth album days later under the Lady A moniker.

And it’s going to be even more confusing than it is now, and everybody is going to get everybody else’s orientations, pronouns, and flags wrong all the time, and absolutely everybody is going to be upset with absolutely everyone else, all the time. The most important thing to remember when you’re starting a new relationship? New relationships rarely “work out,” in the together-for-therest-of-your-lives sense of “working out.” And while LTRs are great, and while LTRs are what most people are looking for (but not all people), STRs—short-term relationship—are what we usually get. We’re likelier to feel good about them, we’re likelier to look back at them and regard them as great, if we don’t think of them as failed LTRs but as successful STRs.
