Retired Tampa Police Chief says ‘Bock The Blub’ mural should be removed. By Colin Wolf
N
early two years after the creation of Tampa’s entirely illegible “Back The Blue” mural, retired police chief Brian Dugan now says it needs to go. “I think it’s probably time for them to move on and get rid of it,” said Dugan in a recent interview with Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. The mural, which is located in front of Police Headquarters at 411 N Franklin St., was created on Aug. 1, 2020, at the height of the George Floyd civil rights protests and while Dugan led the department. Overnight, people affiliated with the Facebook group “Back The Blue Florida,” illegally shut down the street and painted the mural without a permit. “I think the people who were doing it had started off with good intentions,” said Dugan, who retired Sept. 10 of last year. “But now it looks more like a first grader’s art project. The bottom line is we screwed up. We shouldn’t have allowed it to happen.” Since its inception, the “Bock the Blub” mural, as it’s been referred to, has been widely mocked, spray-painted over, and has been the focal point of multiple protests. It all came to a head in late August of 2020, when TPD arrested multiple Black Lives Matter protesters on criminal mischief charges, after they attempted to show inherent policing bias by painting a portion of a Curtis Hixon Park sidewalk without a permit. One of those protesters told CL they were subject to beatings from Hillsborough Sherrifs, adding that they witnessed others being sexually harrassed by deputies at the Orient Road jail. While those charges were later dropped, no arrests were ever made for the “Back the Blue” muralists. Until now, exactly who approved the mural has been somewhat of a mystery, with some speculating that the final nod may have come from Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, who at the time did support an “essential worker mural that included first responders.” But Dugan said the mural was mistakenly given the greenlight by a shift commander, who thought the group had the necessary approval from above. “They had enough information to convince the shift commander that they had permission
to do it,” explained Dugan. “The reality is the shift commander made a mistake and shouldn’t have allowed that to happen. And then after that, it just kind of became a political lightning rod.” While he now says he couldn’t express it at the time, Dugan says the mural was overwhelmingly disliked by himself and many TPD officers.
“Quite frankly, it was a very stressful time for me as chief and for the men and women of the Tampa Police Department, and that ugly mural was kind of a humorous point for us, kind of brought some levity to the situation.” After the mural was first created, one of the mural organizers, Kristen Krutz, told the Tampa Bay Times that the group knew they didn’t obtain a permit, but decided to go through with it anyway because Tampa has Black Lives Matter murals “all over the city.” “The reason why we decided to proceed without a permit is because Black Lives Matter has murals
helping,” explained Dugan. “You didn’t even do it the right way. You lied to the cops to get it done. If you’re going to ‘Back the Blue’ you can’t be misleading to the cops, and it just created more of a flashpoint than anything. It didn’t help anything.” Dugan now says he doesn’t believe a replacement mural is necessary, but the current “Bock the Blub mural” as it stands should be removed immediately. “In my opinion,” said Dugan, “they need to either pressure wash it, paint over it, you know, set it on fire, anything to get rid of

Councilwoman pledges action to address problems at East Tampa apartment complex. By Justin Garcia

fter visiting the residents of Silver Oaks Apartments in East Tampa, councilwoman Lynn Hurtak has pledged to help ensure that their living conditions improve. The affordable housing complex has been plagued with problems—including rodents, black mold and collapsing ceilings—due to poor upkeep from management. “Yesterday residents of the Silver Oaks apartment complex invited me into their homes to show me firsthand the disturbing conditions in which they are forced to live. I saw — and smelled — the black mold, rodent droppings, and rampant disrepair, a solution for which residents have been begging for months,” Hurtak wrote in a city memo on April 20. Hurtak’s memo added that affordable housing, “has for too long been synonymous with unsafe housing,” and said she is dedicated to defending the right of every Tampa resident to have access to safe housing. She thanked Florida’s state Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services Nikki Fried, for her time spent talking with Silver Oaks residents about what Hurtak called a “catastrophe.” Hurtak pointed to research which shows that human exposure to molds, mycotoxins, and water-damaged buildings can have significant adverse effects to the nervous systems of both children and adults. “I pledge to Silver Oaks residents to work with every available regulatory agency, including Mayor Castor, city staff, and Commissioner Fried’s office, to ensure their homes are safe living spaces,” Hurtak wrote. Hurtak also spoke to Tampa Fire Chief Barbara Tripp with regard to resident concerns that exits to the property appear to have been bolted shut, a major safety concern. “Chief Tripp informed me the fire marshal staff will examine it today,” Hurtak wrote. On Facebook, a resident at Silver Oaks posted that the gate was opened on the same day Hurtak’s memo went out. Two days later—and after scrutiny over Silver Oaks from Creative Loafing Tampa Bay and WTSP, plus Councilwoman Hurtak—Tampa Mayor Jane Castor sent out a statement of her own saying that since 2020, her administration has responded to complaints about Silver Oaks and issued citations when applicable. Castor also said her office asked the State of Florida DBPR do an emergency inspection of the properties, requested that HUD inspect the units last year, and received a commitment from HUD to inspect every single unit again in the coming weeks. CL immediately asked for copies of the Castor administration’s correspondence with those complaining about Silver Oaks, plus details of her communication with DBPR and HUD. Our

When asked what could be immediately done about the situation to help the residents there, Fried said she will be looking into next steps. “What I would recommend is that we actually engage my Consumer Affairs Division and see what we can be doing inside the Department of Agriculture and see if there’s things that we can do now,” Fried said, adding that if she wins the governorship, she will declare a housing state of emergency across Florida, and discussed other plans that fall under her “Lower Costs, Higher Standards” plan. According to Fried, the plan seeks to target predatory landlords who gouge rental prices and end the state’s preemption of local jurisdictions to take immediate steps to address the crisis. In Tampa Bay, local politicians have said that their hands are tied due to the state’s rules regarding rent control and rent stabilization, a stance that has been contested by local tenant’s unions. Fried also called on local politicians to do more about the issues at Silver Oaks, and the rental crisis in general. “I don’t know how any elected official in our state of Florida doesn’t hear the cries from their constituents of what is happening on the ground and not want to step up and take action,” Fried said. “I’m sorry, but this has gone on too long in our state, and it’s time for concrete action and for everybody to get engaged in this fight.” After the press conference, residents invited both Fried and Hurtak inside the complex to see first hand the conditions they are living in. Fried’s campaign advisor said they didn’t have any time, but Hurtak went inside, along with the local media. The security guards that deterred media last week were nowhere to be found during the press conference, and only appeared again after Hurtak and others left the property. Resident Vonnesha King led the tour of the damaged apartment units. She also spoke during the press conference about the conditions she and her neighbors are living in, saying “I’m tired,” before down into tears. The emotions were still high as she and neighbor Shantia Little showed Hurtak what they were dealing with. In many of the units, a strong scent of the mold attacked the sinuses immediately. Rat feces lined the counters and corners of one apartment that a woman was in the process of moving out of to live with family, because she couldn’t take it anymore. In another apartment that was vacant and being prepared for the next tenant, black mold was peeking through wet white paint. Tenants there said that this is what they do, they paint over the mold and move new people in.

Report: Tampa witnessed the U.S.’ highest spike in mortgage rates. By Sofía García Vargas
M
ortgage rates have absolutely exploded over the last year in the Tampa area. According to a recently released March Market Report from online real estate giant Zillow, Tampa witnessed the highest year-overyear spike in mortgage rates in the nation. The study reported that in Tampa, the typical home is worth $352,962, up 33.1% from last year. It also showed that assuming a 30-year mortgage with a 20% down payment, the monthly payment on a typical home is now $1,376—23.1% higher than the start of the year and 52.3% higher than a year ago. The study also stated that Tampa’s housing inventory actually grew by 10.2% from February, but still remains 20.6% lower than a year ago. Tampa’s explosive mortgage rate spike barely topped Las Vegas’ where homebuyers saw a 51.5% monthly payment rate increase, and Phoenix with a 48.9% rate. In neighboring Orlando, the numbers told a similar tale. The typical home cost is currently $364,611, 29.1% higher than last year. Under the same mortgage
conditions, the monthly payment of a typical home is $1,422, 47.7% more than a year ago. A year ago nationwide, mortgage rates were below 3% and just in March of this year, it rose to 4.54% Also in March, 11.6% more homes were available than in February, the largest one-month jump in Zillow’s records. However, inventory is still 22.5% lower than it was a year ago. “Higher mortgage rates were anticipated this year, but the speed of their rise has been breathtaking,” said Jeff Tucker, Zillow senior economist. “Record low mortgage rates had been an affordability lifeline during the pandemic, keeping monthly payments in check even while prices climbed quickly.” In Florida, even though demand is always increasing, the skyrocketing of prices and diminishing affordability has left 1.6 million vacant homes. Tampa has been on the same trend for the past few months, with a Realtor.com study showing that the city’s median home listing prices grew by 32% in March—ranking third in the whole country.

DeSantis to Disney: Keep your mouth shut and the checks coming, or else. By Jeffrey C. Billman them, I suspect—and if they have legs, bet on Disney’s lawyers to outclass Florida’s. Also, the fact that this law will offload $1 billion of Disney’s debt and more than $160 million of its annual obligations on the Orlando area— meaning a likely 25% property tax hike for the surrounding Orange County—is the icing on the shit sandwich. (That Orlando votes for Democrats, meaning Democrats will bear the brunt of DeSantis’ tantrum, is no doubt a bonus.) But as with everything in DeSantis’ perpetual War Against the Woke, what actually happens after the media turns its attention to the next manufactured crisis is irrelevant. Appearing to take action—to be the brave soul standing up for the forgotten straight white Christian against the barbarian hordes, even if the actions themselves are ruinous—is the ticket to DeSantis’ political future. And so a state that declared itself the embodiment of freedom not only refused to impose vaccine or mask mandates during a public health crisis. It denied private businesses the right to do the same on their own property, turning them into foot soldiers for COVID denialism.

Oppose the Party, and the Party will punish you. Bear in mind that Disney did nothing to harm the state. Its CEO expressed an opinion and announced that it was “pausing” political contributions—both actions protected by the First Amendment. It didn’t eliminate the Florida Resident Discount or threaten to move EPCOT to Colorado. It embarrassed DeSantis. Or, more precisely, since embarrassment requires shame and DeSantis has none, it provided him with another outlet to channel grievance. So it became another thermonuclear culture war. That we’ve jumped into an Orwellian netherworld should be obvious, but it’s worse than that. This is a mob shakedown in statute. It is telling every other business in the state the rules of the road. Keep your mouth shut and the checks coming, or else. And so long as Florida remains America’s unfortunate appendage, don’t think this idea won’t travel—to Texas and Georgia and other states with right-wing governments and influential businesses that don’t toe the line on the culture war of the week. Because if DeSantis succeeds in bullying Disney the way he bullies queer 12-year-olds, no business—no person—in these states will be free to oppose the regime without risking the regime’s wrath. And that, friends, is what actual cancel culture looks like.

et’s get this out of the way: For a half-century, the state of Florida has prostrated before the tourism industry—Disney in particular, but the Mouse isn’t the only one—like a condemned man begging for a reprieve. It’s not just the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a neat piece of corporate welfare given in 1967 in exchange for a promised “city of the future” Disney never built. It’s also the sucker’s deal mandating that tourism taxes—one of the state’s biggest revenue generators—can only promote tourism, and not, say, help the state’s underfunded schools, and the way the legislature fought minimum wage increases and any kind of pro-worker regulations for decades. I could give examples all day, but you get the point. Disney said jump, and generations of politicians asked, “How high?” So, in any other context, the Florida legislature abruptly changing course and eliminating Reedy Creek—Disney’s own little fiefdom, essentially—might be a positive development. But what’s happening can’t be extricated from its context. And its context is terrifyingly Orwellian. Florida’s Republican lawmakers didn’t act because they don’t believe in bestowing public benefits to private entities. They did it to send a message, a not-so-veiled threat: Public benefits are for loyal subjects only. Disney (belatedly) objected to Florida’s Don’t Say Gay law, on account of Disney being an entertainment company and employing a lot of gay people who are not thrilled about being made a political punching bag by the state’s dollarstore Trump of a governor. When Florida passed the law anyway, Disney said it was “pausing” campaign contributions to both political parties. (When you’re a multibillion-dollar conglomerate, make sure you piss everyone off.) The second Disney turned off the financial spigot, Gov. Ron DeSantis began fundraising off of “woke” California corporations, and his lieutenant governor went on Newsmax to accuse Disney of “sexualizing children,” because we live in a QAnon chatroom now. And now Florida is using the force of law to punish Disney for publicly disagreeing with a public policy and (temporarily) declining to line Republican lawmakers’ pockets. Lest there be any doubt, in that Newsmax appearance, the lieutenant governor admitted DeSantis would stop attacking Disney if Disney stopped being “woke.” There are a few arguments that this law is unconstitutional—the lieutenant governor’s interview will feature prominently in most of
And so Florida banned math textbooks— math!—because they teach “critical race theory,” meaning they have graphs about actual, real-life surveys on “Measuring Racial Prejudice,” and factual information might make white children uncomfortable. And so Florida’s Department of Health has decided that being transgender is just a phase. Last week, it issued guidelines that said, based on what it called “generally lacking” evidence, trans people under 18 should not be allowed to medically or hormonally transition—a probable precursor to Texas’ policy of pursuing child abuse cases against the parents of transgender youth. But Florida goes a step further. Not only should transgender kids be denied gender reassignment surgery and hormone therapy. But “social gender transition should not be a treatment option.” In other words, transgender and nonbinary teenagers should not be allowed to use the “wrong” pronouns, sayeth the bureaucrats. In other words, these guidelines seem to write trans kids out of existence. Never mind that mainstream medical and psychiatric associations think this is crazy. Never mind that it will literally kill children. DeSantis needs his hits on Hannity, so c’est la vie. Back to the matter at hand. Let’s discuss what Florida is broadcasting with its attack on one of its largest employers and, until recently, political contributors. Support the Party, and the Party will support you.

Cameron says that if people enjoy his beer and the demand is met, then he’d “love nothing more than to expand production and stick it in a bottle.” Downtown St. Pete’s Lucky Dill location closed in 2018, and Cameron purchased it shortly after it shuttered.The roughly 1,600-square-foot space brewpub and grill was slated to open in August 2021. The building itself is over 100 years old, but its old-timey feel was what drew Cameron to it in the first place. Cameron is a native of New South Wales, Australia, and the Where’s Jubes building is

ove over Outback, there’s a new Australian grill in town, and it’s heading to The Burg’. Located at the former Lucky Dill Deli space at 277 Central Ave. in downtown St. Pete, the Where’s Jubes team gears up for a soft opening, slated for sometime in early May according to owner Josh Cameron. He’s hoping to debut his new brewpub during next month’s First Friday on May 6, but isn’t sure of the exact soft opening date yet. Cameron tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that his brewpub and grill has encountered permitting delays, so when Where’s Jubes soft opens next month, it won’t be selling food or its own craft beer just yet. The construction team still has more work to do on its newly-renovated kitchen, while Cameron is still awaiting his federally-administered brewing license. Until the brewing license is confirmed, Where’s Jubes’ four brand-new brew tanks— located on the North wall of the pub, adjacent to Ruby’s Elixir—cannot be used. For next month’s soft opening, Cameron plans to serve rotating beers from other local breweries, although no specific names were disclosed. The menu continues to be “In F*cking Progress” like the Where’s Jubes website, brewing license and kitchen, but the concept will eventually feature hearty dishes like the Aussie burger with bacon, egg, cheese, caramelized onions and pickled beets. Cameron says the menu won’t be too extensive, but will be full of Aussie favorites that compliment the craft beers. And in addition to its grill-focused menu, Where’s Jubes will also boast a full craft beer menu—although it might be hard to get through its tap list without cracking a smile. The restaurant’s four brewing tanks will soon pump out signature beers like its Spanker Knob Pacific pale ale with notes of passionfruit and citrus, Crackenback wheat, a light fruity beer, and its crisp Barangaroo pilsner. “I’ve never understood why America’s favorite beer is Bud Light but breweries tend to push heavy, hoppy beers— I think there’s a big demand for pilsners, lagers and lighter stuff in general,” Cameron tells CL. “Back home, all you want is a cold, crisp beer—especially on a hot day. In Australia,
on Cameron’s back-burner while he gets the brewpub up and running, but says that he can see an “Italian gastropub and sexy lounge bar” open in the former Gigi’s space. Although there are various trends from the “Land Down Under” that are incorporated into his other businesses—like Crafty Squirrel’s teapot cocktails—Cameron’s upcoming brewpub and grill will be his most personalized venture yet. Even the name of the upcoming restaurant was born out of an inside joke between him and his staff. “I’ve always been a hands-on operator, and the more you do the less time you have,” Cameron says. “I have a network of mates and people I work with always asking where I am—Where’s Jubes has always been a running joke. It was never the number one name, but it was certainly the most unique.”

riving through south St. Pete, you might see a young woman equipped with a speaker, a stool and a phone hard at work in the middle of the street. And that work usually involves energetic dancing, detailed costumes, and the nonchalant acceptance of her neighbors. With a staggering 1.7 million followers on Instagram—Alexis Feacher aka YungBBQ—is a 22 year-old native of St. Petersburg who loves vintage clothes, pop culture, and just being your typical Gen-Zer.
Feacher started the Instagram account Yung BBQ—which stands for “Young Beautiful Black Queen”—in late 2019, and her follower count hasn’t stopped growing since. Two years and a million followers later, Feacher feels like it’s time to delve deeper into the world of content creation. Her name can be pronounced as “B-B-Q” because of the aforementioned acronym, but Feacher says “barbeque” is fine too, because she’s “got the sauce.”

One of Feacher’s most popular videos is an impersonation of R&B singer Omarion, where she copies his movements frame-by-frame. Every single detail—from the crisp dance moves to their outfits—is eerily similar. And at a whopping 1.1 million views on Instagram, Feacher doesn’t need any context to make her fans laugh.
When asked the loaded question of “what inspires you?”—there was a long pause before she answered. “Early 2000s nostalgia, going to cookouts, being around my family, just observing how different people interact with each other,” Feacher tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “Growing up in St. Petersburg I’ve always been surrounded by different types of music on the radio or around town— and that was inspiring, too.” And you won’t just see acting, skits and parody from Feacher’s Instagram, Facebook or Youtube either. Just a quick scroll through the YungBBQ page and you’ll see splits, high jumps and other impressive moves. Feacher—a classically-trained dancer— has been busting moves for a majority of her life. continued on page 34

continued from page 33 If you’re one of Feacher’s many followers, you might have noticed her painstaking attention to costume detail or her signature move called the “BBQ Swerve’’—where her hands travel from the top of her head to her knees amidst a hipshaking motion. Feacher says that when people recognize her on the street, which is pretty often, the BBQ Swerve is often requested alongside her catchphrase, “What Da Freak?” Only a few years out of high school, Feacher impersonates niche memes, early 2000’s pop culture references and Disney movies that only her peers would really get—like her SharkBoy and Lava Girl dance that reached upwards of 800,000 views on Instagram. Her typical “set” is usually the street of her childhood home in southside St. Pete, as her neighbor’s cars can be seen politely swerving out of the way in the background of some of her videos. But she does have a few choice locations throughout the city that get blessed by the “BBQ Swerve” from time to time. “The alley behind the (now-closed) Iberian Rooster, man, I can’t count how many videos I’ve filmed there,” Feacher says with a laugh. The video where she reenacts the obscure meme of a lady dancing by the pool, was shot at the TradeWinds Island Grand Resort on St. Pete Beach, while her viral reenactment of Omarion’s cringey dancing was filmed in downtown’s Williams Park. “I try to bring Florida culture into my content, and you’ll see me do Florida-style dances like sticking & rollin’ and jookin’ if that video calls for it,” Feacher says. “But to be honest, I do a little bit of everything.” But to her millions of non-Tampa Bay fans, these hyperlocal details couldn’t matter less. And with her extremely detailed costumes, it makes sense that she loves fashion just as much as she loves dancing. One of her most frequented spots in the Burg’ is Central Avenue’s Wendy Closet, a vintage resale store. Her outfit in the photos for this story is completely thrifted from Wendy’s, as it compliments her beloved lime green Air Force 1’s—the shoes that she’s been dancing in for years. Feacher was already dancing by the time she was in kindergarten, and was involved in many arts programs throughout St. Petersburg. Her older brother and manager, Charles Smith, works as a professional choreographer. She and her two other brothers grew up attending the Boys & Girls Club’s arts programs at St. Pete’s Royal Theater— a historic Black performance space and movie theater that dates back to the 1940s. “I’ve always done hip hop, but while in those programs I also studied jazz, modern and ballet,” Feacher says. “Those different programs kind of made me realize that dancing was something that I wanted to do long term.”
THE JUMP OFF: YungBBQ got her start in programs at St. Pete’s historic Royal Theater. Feacher graduated from Gibbs High School in 2017 and was involved in many different types of sports and spirit week activities as well. She worked at a local Publix until August 2020, and balanced YungBBQ and her cashier job for about a year before making the plunge to be a full-time content creator. In several of Feacher’s early videos, she can be seen dancing in her green Publix vest, sometimes at work. Now, she makes a living mainly through brand partnerships. Only about two years into her career as an entertainer, Feacher has already partnered with powerful brands like the NBA, BET, DSW, Footaction, Spotify, Atlantic Records, Netflix and Nike—as she was the face of its exercise app’s first virtual dance class. And large corporations aren’t the only powerful folks noticing her content, either. Celebrities like Diddy, Chris Brown, Teyana Taylor and SZA have reposted her videos over the past few years. K Michelle reposted one of her earliest videos in 2019, after YungBBQ lip synced her single “Rain,” on one of those “dreary, Hurricaneseason type of days,” as Feacher describes. Feacher, a self-proclaimed “Disney kid” who re-creates a lot of mid-2000s Disney channel content, fangirled when the OMG Girlz acknowledged her

reenactment of one of their nostalgic pop songs. And although Feacher has reached a global audience, most Tampa Bay-based fans are shocked to find out she lives here. “People never expect me to live in St. Pete because most content creators live in L.A. or Atlanta,” she says. And while she enjoys living in her hometown in her childhood home, she can see herself living in a big city one day. Feacher frequently travels to film different videos for brand partnerships, but still loves to call the Burg’ home— although she does note that “downtown is getting a little crowded.” Feacher tells CL that it was her childhood dream to one day open her own nonprofit dance studio—a dream that doesn’t feel too out of reach these days. Although throughout her life she was always encouraged to stick exclusively to dancing, she has a fierce desire to become as multifaceted as possible. “I don’t want to have to call up someone to film a video for me, or come over just to do my makeup,” YungBBQ says. “I want to learn how to do pretty much everything myself so I don’t
have to rely on other people. I want to be trained enough to be able to dabble in a bunch of different styles of entertainment.” She notes that it’s common for internet stars to be stuck in a niche, giving their followers exactly what they would expect. Feacher looks to break this mold, and constantly evolve as a dancer, entertainer and influencer. In addition to her wildly-popular Instagram and Facebook accounts, she’s slowly starting to build up her YouTube channel “That’s so Lex,” as it’s an entirely different outlet that doesn’t limit her to one type of content. She’s delving into sketch comedy writing and direction, and just started editing her own videos in Adobe Premiere Pro. And as the kids do these days, YungBBQ is also learning different content creation skills by watching TikTok tutorials. At 22 years-old and less than three years into her career, things are only looking up for Alexis Feacher and her YungBBQ empire. Of the youngest generation of budding Tampa Bay celebrities, soon enough locals will be boasting that YungBBQ reps their city.

The Tampa Bay songwriter has two new singles—“Technically Married” and “Do Better”—which he wrote on the same day in early 2018 during a rough patch in his relationship. “But we just got married so it felt fitting to put these out and put it behind us,” Esker told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay about the pop tunes. He tapped friends to help record the songs in the empty house he and his now-wife were moving out of, and has plans to spend this solo set “telling stories about all of the songs I’ve written about my wife since I fell for her in high school 15 years ago.” (Hideaway Cafe, St. Petersburg)

Kelly hopes to spend next month moving into what he hopes is a new location, but in the meantime he’s tapped some of Tampa Bay’s best songwriters to play both inside and outside during a nearly 12-hour, no-cover party that starts at 12:30 p.m. (Hideaway Cafe, St. Petersburg) The Movement w/Pacific Dub/ Seranation Three years after its Reggae Rise Up Florida debut, South Carolina reggae band The Movement returned for a festival slot last October, when it played the last day of the first post-COVID version of RRU. After releasing new single, “No Worry,” this month, we’re hoping that The Movement is working on a new album, which would be its first since 2019. Joining in this weekend are Pacific Dub and Serenation, the latter of which played RRU on the same day as The Movement in 2019. C Boz Scaggs The 77-year-old has seen enough tragedy in his life to have called it a day a long time ago. It’s easy to forget that he basically co-founded The Steve Miller Band back in the ‘60s, and though he didn’t stick around for long, we can only wonder what the band might’ve sounded like had he stuck around. In the last decade, Scaggs released a trilogy of albums consisting of American roots music—much like Bob Dylan and his Great American Songbook trilogy—and this gig is already sold-out. Now that you’ve memorized their latest, OK Orchestra, cover to cover, the boys

Late last week, it was announced that in the wake of Knobs drummer Matt Laug having to take on a tour in Italy for the next few months, original Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch—who hasn’t played with Mike since Tom Petty gave him the boot in the ‘90s—would take his place behind the kit for a run of shows including this one in Ybor City. Perhaps the Tampa show—and both homecoming Gainesville shows—getting canceled for a third time earlier this year was the best thing that ever happened for local Tom Petty fans. Lynch’s appearance could have happened in Tampa with or without Laug, anyway. After all, it’s not that long of a drive from his home in St. Augustine.
