Welcome to the inaugural edition of the CAC’s performing arts festival, This Time Tomorrow! Since 2011 we’ve been presenting full seasons of performances from across the world that span disciplines, explore new contexts, and challenge tradition. This Time Tomorrow is a natural furtherance of the ethos that has been at the heart of our performance series since the beginning; promote exchange and conversation, collaborate frequently, and inspire audiences’ sense of discovery with bold, expansive performances. This Time Tomorrow’s arrival comes at a pivotal cultural moment. The unease with our fractured sense of commonality has encouraged the pursuits of other ways of joining together with people. More than any other art form, performance satisfies that urge. Its ephemeral nature requires a presence, an assembly, an interaction.

This will be the spot to further immerse yourself in performances, hear about the shows you need to see, and deepen your love for the mother’s milk of Kentucky, bourbon. With This Time Tomorrow, we encourage you to take the opportunity to embrace what makes contemporary performance essential to culture; the expectation of the unexpected, and a hunger for the new. TANIA EL KHOURY As Far As My Fingertips Take Me As Far As My Fingertips Take Me is a conversation through a gallery wall between an audience member and a Syrian refugee. Their arms touch without seeing each other. The refugee will mark the audience by drawing on their arm. The audience will listen to those who have recently challenged border discrimination. The marking can be kept or washed away.
His tale doesn't just touch me in a fleeting way-it goes further. It marks me. For the next few days I will carry it around with me. It is part of me, not easily ignored or washed away."

LORENA MOLINA Tu nombre entre nuestras lenguas El Mozote is a small town in El Salvador, and the site of the deadliest massacre in recorded Latin American history. On November 11, 1981, 988 people, mostly children, were murdered. This atrocity was carried out by the Salvadoran army, trained in North Carolina and funded by the US government. For nearly 30 years, the Salvadoran government denied that this massacre had happened; the victims’ bodies and names lost between the terrain’s red clay and mango trees. When trauma occurs, the act of telling stories becomes an important tool of both remembrance and resistance. Tu nombre
entre nuestras lenguas, conceived and performed by Salvadoranborn, Cincinnati-based artist Lorena Molina, will be a ceremony for their loss. By bearing witness to a history unknown to most, participants will contribute to a shared ritual that acknowledges the long history of the United States’ implication in the affairs of other nations, displacing families and directly contributing to the refugee crisis.

INTERMEDIO On Touching Musical sound comes into being through an unfolding and dynamic set of relations that are not only aural, but also tactile, spatial, and material. In On Touching, musical sound emanates from a series of continually unfolding transmissions, both physical and digital, distributed between performers and a wearable cybernetic system. Sound is created and shaped through transmission across the physical boundaries of each person’s body. The sounds collectively produced are determined and constrained only by their “range of action”, and their ability to touch and be touched. In concert they step into the void, go out of bounds, diverge, touch down, swerve and return, engaging in experimentation among the infinite possibilities of dynamic relations between the parts and with the whole. The multi-sensory presence and pressure of the collective touch elicits concern for

RASHAAD NEWSOME Running Rashaad Newsome is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is deeply invested in how images used in media and popular culture communicate distorted notions of power and status. Whether it be in his series of compositions created by “throwing shade” or his various works documenting the dance form known as vogue, his interests lie in critiquing the popular appropriation of the dance, music, and vernacular expression developed in Harlem’s queer ballroom scene of the 1970s. Premiering at the Park Avenue Armory in November 2017, Running is an immersive performance evoking an abstract portrait of soul created through light and voice. Running is centered on the musicology term for a singer’s improvised embellishment; a “vocal run” is a rapid series of ascending or descending musical notes sung in quick succession. Running is a vocal effect that spans a variety of musical genres from the 19th century to today. Newsome’s stirring performance features three vocalists performing an original score composed by the artist, which incorporates samples of vocal runs by Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye, B.B.

NIC KAY pushit! [exercise 1 in getting well soon] Can resistance be choreographed? PUSHIT!, a site-responsive performance by NIC Kay, is a meditation on emotional labor and the impossibility of the stage as a place of freedom for the Black performer. This work is part of a larger set of exercises in getting-well-soon.

DAINA ASHBEE Serpentine Serpentine is an installation performance, repeated for up to 2 hours. The work vibrates the essence of Ashbee’s dark and feminine pieces and is intended as a short and intense summary of her previous three works, Unrelated (2014), When the ice melts, will we
drink the water? (2016) and Pour (2016). The research explored the occupation of space/time/attention in what became a cathartic solo for Areli Moran (Mexico) based in repetition and insistence. Ashbee uses simple imagery in order to allow the work to resonate with many viewers. The piece includes original electric organ composition by Jean-Francois Blouin which is both disturbing and powerful. The juxtaposition of the haunting electric organ and the slow, sensual movement that escalates in its violence, is confidently, beautifully and earnestly performed by Moran.
Ashbee's approach is to elevate the body in a very physical sense and bring awareness to relevant issues that are rarely addressed with such an evocative touch"

MAMMALIAN DIVING REFLEX All The Sex I've Ever Had (Cincinnati Edition) All the Sex I’ve Ever Had is a performance about, and starring, people over the age of 65 and features everything they can remember and care to share about their romantic and sexual lives. A group of six older adults from the Cincinnati area discuss the evolution of love and sexuality from the perspective of life’s later years. All the Sex I’ve Ever Had offers the audience the experiences of a generation. Older adults courageously open up their personal lives and experiences to fellow participants and strangers, divulging stories of first crushes, turbulent affairs, unexpected pregnancies and deaths of loved ones as they go year-by-year through their entire lives. The participants chat with the audience, toast to important milestones and dance on-stage.
While the stories start with sex, they are not strictly about sex. They are about understanding that feeling awkward is as common as breathing, and knowing that time will help us get through the worst of times. Sometimes survival is remarkable, even if the person living the life thinks it's not."

JOSEPH KECKLER Live Recently hailed by the New York Times as a “major vocal talent whose range shatters the conventional boundaries,” singer and writer Joseph Keckler folds mesmerizing storytelling and sharp wit into a rich vocal range spanning over three octaves. He’s performed his work at the Centre Pompidou (with Cabinet Magazine), Miami Art Basel, PEN American Center, and many other international venues, and has been featured on BBC America and WNYC. Keckler recently made his Off-Broadway debut in the critically acclaimed play Preludes at Lincoln Center Theater. He is currently under commission by Beth Morrison Projects and FringeArts/Opera Philadelphia, and is developing various projects in music, art, and television. A collection of his writing, “Dragon at the Edge of a Flat World,” was published by Turtle Point Press last year.

AMANDA CURRERI RopeWalk RopeWalk is large-scale, public performance from Cincinnatibased artist Amanda Curreri. Occurring across the Ohio River along the Purple People Bridge, fifty participants from various communities will work together to create ropes spanning the bridge as a symbolic and real action of public healing. The site is connected to the charged histories of slavery and freedom embedded in the Ohio River signifying the dividing line between the North and South in antebellum times. A gathering with light refreshments and will follow RopeWalk (on the Cincinnati side of the bridge).

Perform-A-Thon Perform-A-Thon is Greater Cincinnati’s first ever 24-hour performance art event. Programmed by, and performed at, PIQUE, an art space in Covington, KY, Perform-A-Thon will feature works in all stages of creation by artists from the region and around the country. For 4 years, PIQUE has supported performance art in the greater Cincinnati area, becoming known as a space that specializes in emerging artists and unexpected experiences. With 24 performances in 24 hrs, Perform-A-Thon is the fitting culmination—experimental, extended, and exquisite—of our inaugural year of This Time Tomorrow.
