UPFRONT SAMARIA RICE WANTS TO OPEN CULTURAL CENTER IN TAMIR’S NAME IN NOVEMBER OF 2014, Samaria Rice endured a parent’s worst nightmare when her 12-yearold son was shot and killed by Cleveland police officers outside Cudell Recreation Center. The police had been called about an “armed person,” which turned out to be a child playing with a toy gun. The murder of Tamir Rice sparked community and national outrage, but the two offers involved in the shooting were never criminally charged. However, Tamir’s mother, Samaria Rice, is honoring the memory of her son by starting a new Afrocentric center in his name as part of the Tamir Rice Foundation. Rice has purchased the old Slavic News building off St. Clair in the hopes of turning it into an after-school center for children. The center’s goal, according to the fundraising page, is to have a “world in which all children feel safe, nurtured and valued — especially in their darkest times.” In honor of what would have been Tamir Rice’s Sweet 16, the Tamir Rice Foundation’s goal is to raise $21,000 for the renovations needed to convert the building. The Center is said to be intended to provide arts, cultural and educational programs for children from ages 10 to 19. Young black men are nine times more likely than other Americans to be killed by law enforcement officers. With the new center, black children will have a safe haven to call their own. Rice is hoping to break ground on the center in 2019, and a fundraiser for the center, as well as a celebration of Tamir’s 16th birthday, will be held at the Cleveland Museum of Art on June 14. The event will feature remarks and performances from Opal Tometi of Black Lives Matter, Pages Matam of Bus Boys and Poets, Humble G and Mourning [A] Blk Star. — BJ Colangelo
Trevor Elkins Will Run for County Democratic Party Chair, Staging Re-Match with Shontel Brown The Cuyahoga County Democratic Party is “feared for the wrong reasons,” said Newburgh Heights mayor Trevor Elkins in a video last week announcing his bid for party chairman. “It’s feared because there’s a risk that if you don’t go along [to] get along with a select set of power brokers, you’ll be punished,” he said. “We’re not creating transparency and inclusivity in our process.” Elkins’ announcement had the feel of deja vu. Only last summer, he ran for party chair when Stu Garson, chairman since 2010, vacated his seat a year early in the hopes of letting the party adjust to new leadership and preventing turbulence before a pivotal election year. County councilwoman Shontel Brown prevailed in that race, though Garson explicitly endorsed either Elkins or state senator Sandra Williams. At the time, Brown was disparaged as a “puppet” of powerful factions in the party, notably Rep. Marcia Fudge and the “Parma Boys”: former prosecutor Bill Mason, former Parma mayor Dean DePiero, Bedford clerk of courts Tom Day, Cleveland city council president Kevin Kelley, and others. Sandra Williams recently retained her state senate seat with the official endorsement of the party, though not with the backing of Marcia Fudge. Fudge was presumed to have thrown her weight behind challenger Jeff Johnson in that race largely to punish Williams for running against Shontel Brown for county chair. Elkins has rejected the “inside baseball” style of transactional politics that he feels still dominates. He thinks that

the county’s inability to more successfully endorse winning candidates is a sign of weakness. He is now hoping that a fresh party central committee — populated, after the primary elections, with a good deal more of his Progressive Caucus backers

These recommendations are all, he said, in the service of building unity. He wants the party’s executive committee, itself made up of precinct committee people, to be fully elected. (Currently, about half are appointed.) He wants to postpone endorsements of candidates until after the ďŹ ling deadline to encourage broader participation. He wants to redeďŹ ne the role of city and ward leaders to prevent what he called, in a statement, “backroom horse trading.â€? And he wants to do away with primary endorsements for open seats. Elkins said he anticipated cynical questions about his ability to represent the party because he is white, an observation likely directed at Shontel Brown, who spoke about the party’s racial divisions on the day of the party endorsement votes earlier this year. But it’s an observation without much historical precedent, given that the party chairs prior to Brown’s election last year were Stu Garson and Jimmy Dimora, also white men. “I want this to be a big tent,â€? Elkins said. “I genuinely feel that we can heal our divisions and divides.â€? The embezzlement was executed with the aid of Craig McGuire, a consultant who wrote the grant applications. Roche reportedly took a salary “by classifying himself as a project coordinator of the programs paid for by the grant, even though the grant’s regulations precluded him from doing so.” Roche and McGuire embezzled more than $180,000 in total. The 71-year-old Roche, based on an agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, will likely serve between 10 and 16 months in federal prison. He will be sentenced on August 29. Roche has been protesting Chief Wahoo with the fractious local chapter of the American Indian Movement since the early 1970s. In 2014, Roche made national headlines when a photo of an opening-day confrontation between him and an Indians fan in garish redface went viral.

Scientists Say Lake Erie Toxic Algae Blooms Could Be Part of Climate Change Loop Toxic algae blooms affecting the western basin of Lake Erie stem from farm runoff, but their severity and frequency are likely exacerbated by climate change, scientists have warned. A report released last week from the Environmental Working Group cataloged 300 large blooms nationwide since only 2010, and the real number is probably higher. That news comes after a study released in March by scientists and researchers from the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Sea Grant and the EPA that found an increase in blooms tied directly to increased greenhouse gas emissions. In general, lakes and reservoirs produce about one-fifth of the greenhouse emissions as fossil fuels. So, basically, algae blooms will be more frequent and worse because of climate change, and
they will then increasingly contribute to that climate change. “We found that, as the lakes go greener, more eutrophic, the atmospheric effect of the lakes skyrockets,” said John Downing, the director of the Minnesota Sea Grant. “That’s because plants are decomposing and shooting methane and CO2 into the atmosphere. Basically a little increase could cause the greenhouse effect of lakes to increase 5 to 40 percent.” A lot of their research is centered on Lake Erie, the shallowest of the Great Lakes, and where we’ve seen some of the nastiest blooms in recent memory. “The atmospheric impact of those gases coming out of Lake Erie right now is probably 18 times the atmospheric effects of all the cars in the city of Detroit,” Downing said. Fun stuff. The state of Ohio recently, and finally, declared Lake Erie impaired, which will likely mean stricter regulations for farmers in an effort to stem the tide of runoff. John Kasich, for his part, has upset some environmentalists this past week after saying that Lake Erie wasn’t, in fact, impaired,
before circling back to say that he meant only parts of it were impaired, not the whole thing. “There are parts that we’ve declared impaired in the western basin. But in the middle of the lake, we don’t think so,” he said. “And I’m not going to go around and say that all of Lake Erie is impaired.” Toledo would probably beg to differ, as that city has endured multiple large-scale blooms leading to health advisories in recent years. “Toledoans are paying for a problem we didn’t create,” Toledo mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said at a recent conference, indicating that the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation held far too much sway with Ohio lawmakers who should be clamping down on them instead of cashing their checks. “It’s probably the most powerful interest group in Ohio.” —Vince Grzegorek

UPFRONT Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Board of Trustees announced that former board president George Dixon III owes the agency more than $1.1 million in unpaid health insurance premiums, health benefits and cell phone bills. Dixon, who had served as president of the board for 24 years, resigned in March amidst an investigation into unpaid health insurance premiums. RTA offered health insurance to its board members, but Dixon was the only trustee to take advantage of the offer. (The practice has now been outlawed by a board vote.) After a lengthy private executive session, the board announced that it had voted to refer Dixon’s case to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, the state auditor and the Ohio Ethics Commission. It rejected an offer from Dixon to incrementally repay his $140,000 in unpaid health insurance premiums. The board said it wants to collect the costs of the health benefits as well, worth roughly $970,000. “We will do whatever it takes,� said South Euclid Mayor and RTA board member Georgine Welo. “Mr. Dixon abused the public trust for personal benefit.� According to the board, Dixon persuaded “lower-echelon� staff members to keep him insured, despite his overdue payments. RTA released a statement saying Dixon had received official warnings about his missed payments and that recently, some of his checks had been returned for insufficient funds. Clevelanders for Public Transit has released a statement expressing their disappointment and outrage in RTA leadership. The ridership advocacy group was “appalled,� it said, that public funds were abused and misused. CPT has called for a “top to bottom external audit� to improve transparency, accountability and restore public trust in GCRTA. It also demanded, once again, that county executive Armond Budish appoint a RTA rider to RTA’s board of trustees to ensure that the needs of riders are being represented. Mayor Frank Jackson designated Kelley Britt, a NOACA planner, to replace Dixon on the board last week. — Allard

Caitlin Upton’s meme-worthy, “such as the iraq war and such as,â€? answer during Miss Teen USA solidiďŹ ed the perception that beauty queens are total airheads, despite the fact the Miss America (not the same as Miss USA) Scholarship Organization gives more scholarship money to women than any other organization in America. “I was really interested after seeing John Oliver’s sketch on Miss America,â€? Foxlin told Scene. “I thought it was hysterical my resume matches what they claim they want. I wanted to challenge the system and see if they really are who they claim they are.â€? Foxlin was well aware of the stereotypes that exist in the world of pageantry, but her goal is to shatter the misconceptions. “Over winter break I pitched the idea to my mom and my mom asked why I would do that to my career, because I’ll have to explain the ‘pageant title’ and live with that for the rest of my life,â€? says Foxlin. “My mom said, ‘You are a person who could break all those stereotypes, but do you think you can change people’s minds and be an example?’ “I don’t know any other engineers who have competed in pageants, but I was always a girly-girl that dreamt of being a Disney princes,â€? Foxlin says. “I was raised in a very stereotypically feminine way, but I was told if I wanted to be an engineer, I had to be a tomboy. A lot of people accidentally raise their girls to believe you have to be one way or the other and push that notion on young girls; I like to shatter expectations.â€? Foxlin tries to spend as much time as possible volunteering with elementary schools to make sure the staffers don’t feel the same way. Given that Foxlin is an active member of the tech community, and was even featured as the star in a commercial for Microsoft, her STEM background is not typical of traditional Miss Ohio competitors. She doesn’t stand out just for being an engineer in a beauty pageant, either: She also stands out in the tech world for being a pageant queen. “I would walk into the lab and people would say, ‘You dress like a princess,’ when I was just wearing a dress, which I do every day,” she says. “Why is that a problem? There’s no safety concern there. If I’m going into a machine shop, I’ll wear jeans; but otherwise there’s no safety concern to work in the lab and wear a dress.” Even before competing in Miss Greater Cleveland, Foxlin was breaking down barriers with her nonprofit, Beauty and the Bolt. “I teach people engineering without

changing the way I look. I wear a dress,” she says. “The hope is that girls won’t have this conditioned idea of what they need to look like to be into engineering,” says Foxlin. “I
want to break the stereotype without explicitly saying it, but just doing it.” Foxlin’s nonprofit does have Disney princess roots, as the name itself is a play on Beauty and the
Beast. According to Foxlin, “Belle is an engineer, an inventor and a designer. Our motto is ‘Brilliant is Beautiful’ and I figured what better way to prove it than to win a pageant.” As an outsider to the pageant world, Foxlin was pleasantly surprised to have her own expectations shattered by the program. “Pageant girls tear each other down less than tech girls do, believe it or not,” she says. “When I showed up at Miss Cleveland, another girl did my hair for me and she wasn’t upset when I won the title. Hair isn’t what got you the crown,” she says. “And that’s something pageant girls understand.” Despite being a completely selffunded competitor and admittedly “horrible” at styling her own hair, Foxlin is confident in her decision to compete in Miss Ohio. “I think pageants reward a skill that isn’t rewarded anywhere else,” she says. “There are life skills, public speaking skills, and interview skills. If engineers had to do a pageant, our field would be completely different.” — Colangelo

CLEVELAND SUMMER, NOW NEW AND IMPROVED 31 new ways to enjoy the summer months this year By Scene Staff SUMMER IS CALLING AND YOU are poised to answer the call. You will sit on patios. You will go to warm summer Tribe games. You will leave work early. You will sit on the couch as the sun is somehow still out around 9 p.m. and feel bad about wanting to go to bed already. (Don’t.) You will cook out, go to a concert under the stars, ride bikes, hit the beach, and totally get that beach bod in belated shape. Or you’ll tackle a portion of that bucket list and regret not doing more once winter hits, but that won’t be our fault. We’re here to remind you to seize the summer, because this one is no run-of-the-mill Clevo season — it’s chock-full of brand new things to do, things to see and things to experience. By our rough scientific estimates, it should, in fact, be about 73 percent better than last summer. So dig out the sunglasses, lather up, and get ready to enjoy what should be a glorious three months.
THE EDGEWATER BEACH HOUSE The Beach House at Edgewater Park technically opened last summer, but it’s new-ish enough to include in
this year’s guide. As the centerpiece of Cleveland’s major lakefront park, lovingly designed by the architects at Bialosky Cleveland, it’s a welcome visual upgrade from the damp midcentury structure of years’ passed. The beach house is also the nucleus around which the Edgewater Live concert series, returning for its fifth consecutive season on Thursday, May 31, vibrates. This year, there is an exciting new addition to the Beach House: the Edgewater Nature Shop, (read: gift shop). According to the Metroparks, beach-goers will be able to rent standup paddleboards, umbrellas and chairs, and purchase towels, sunscreen and primo Metroparks merch. Speaking from experience, the sunscreen will be key.
STEEL VENGEANCE AT CEDAR POINT Though the hotly anticipated roller coaster got off to an inauspicious start — a minor (injury-less) collision — the Steel Vengeance is still getting rave reviews from thrill ride enthusiasts and local theme park aficionados across the Land. Steel Vengeance has emerged from the shell of Mean Streak and is now the
world’s tallest, fastest hybrid (wood and steel) roller coaster. Scene’s roller coaster correspondent called the ride “clearly” the best in the park. Unlike the Mean Streak, notorious for its viciously bumpy ride, Steel Vengeance remains unfathomably smooth, even as it whips riders to and fro. Starting at 205 feet, its opening drop is 40 feet higher than Mean Streak’s was, and the ride clocks in at two minutes and 30 seconds, 10 seconds longer than the Millenium Force. If you haven’t been out to Sandusky in a spell, Steel Vengeance is reason enough to get thee to America’s Roller Coast.
JUDD’S CITY TAVERN Judd’s City Tavern (10323 Madison Ave., facebook.com/judds-city-tavern) is everything good about your favorite Cleveland bars: It’s a classic no-frills dive, where an attentive bartender — Dave Hridel, among the city’s best — serves up drinks at the right price and gratis popcorn all night long. (We’re partial to the $6 Tecate and Tequila, but with a prime-time happy hour from 8 to 11 p.m., Judd’s won’t break the bank.) Decorated with Cleveland historical memorabilia, Judd’s evokes both an all-night diner and
a watering hole of an earlier era. At West 103rd and Madison, it occupies an unassuming brick building and plants a flag in a no-man’s-land on the west side. It’s now the closest tavern for a huge number of residents in the Cudell neighborhood. Lucky for them, it’s top-hole. We hear a kitchen’s on the way.
INFINITY MIRRORS AT CMA If you waited in the digital line for tickets to Infinity Mirrors, the Cleveland Museum of Art’s summer exhibit from Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, you won’t need this blurb to excite you. Throughout its summer run, beginning July 7, there will be 100,000 timed tickets available. (Most have already been sold, but some still remain for mid-week slots in August and September; find them at clevelandart.org.) The exhibit includes seven of Kasama’s spellbinding Infinity Mirror rooms and a host of paintings from various points during her 65-year career. The digital ticketing arrangement was the most elaborate in CMA’s history and the exhibit is one of the most hyped. THE WHO’S ROGER DALTREY WITH THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA The Cleveland Orchestra celebrates its 50th Blossom season this summer with a huge rock ’n’ roll event: The Who’s Roger Daltry plays Tommy, arguably the world’s first rock musical and concept album, in its entirety for one night only. Sure, Daltry and some of his Who crew are playing the show with eight other orchestras around the country this year. But to be clear, the Cleveland Orchestra is the highest caliber of the bunch. Expect a larger Blossom crowd than usual for this electric show under the stars on Sunday, July 8, at 8 p.m. The usual lax picnic basket rules for lawn seating will also change to accommodate the masses, and glass and overly large coolers are prohibited. WIZARDS AND WANDS PUB CRAWL Not to say there’s never been a wizard-themed bar crawl in Northeast Ohio before, but the new-to-Cleveland Wizards and Wands Pub Crawl takes Harry Potter, and his of-age acolytes, especially seriously. The roving event, which apparates all over the country this summer, stops at East Fourth Street on Saturday, Aug. 11, and includes butterbeer and much wizard

ALPACA YOGA Doing yoga with a group of humans is so passe. These days, there’s got to be some sort of furry friend involved, like kittens or goats. But alpaca yoga, or alpoga, is yet another option for Clevelanders looking to namaste with critters. Starting this month, the Vintage Alpacas farm in Brooklyn Heights is offering the practice multiple times a week. While larger than other yoga companions, alpacas are known for their kind and calming demeanors. Instruction is conducted outdoors as the animals move throughout. JIM THOME HALL OF FAME CELEBRATION On July 29, former Indians slugger and franchise leader in home runs, Jim Thome, will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. A few weeks later, on Aug. 17 and 18, the Indians will honor Thome at Progressive Field when they host the Baltimore Orioles. On the 17th, there will be a Thome-themed fireworks show set to highlights of Thome’s career. On Saturday the 18th, you’ll find a full celebration of Thome’s career and Hall of Fame induction. The first 20,000 fans in attendance that night will receive a Thome souvenir jersey. Thome finished his career with 612 home runs, good for eighth all time in Major League history. DANNY LYON PHOTOGRAPHY AT CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART In 1966, at the age of 25, established photographer Danny Lyon returned to his hometown of New York City. At a time when Lower Manhattan was going through urban renewal, Lyon set about photographing the city’s changes, including the leveling of entire neighborhoods in order to make way for urban revitalization. Cleveland native George Stephanopoulos owned 52 of the resulting photos, and has given them to the CMA. The exhibit, The Destruction of Lower Manhattan, runs from Saturday, May 19, through Sunday, Oct. 7. Lyon’s photography was the beginning of what is now known as “ruin porn,” which reveals the decay of infrastructure in American cities.
HAMILTON Starting July 17 at the State Theatre at Playhouse Square, the critically acclaimed, smash hit musical Hamilton will be in Cleveland. Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical has been a perennial sell-out, including during the four years of its current run in

New York City, where tickets on the secondary market can fetch up to $2,000. The play, which has received 16 Tony nominations, and won 11, is a hip-hop musical about the life of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, based on the 2004 biography by historian Ron Chernow. ON THE GRILL Award-winning play On the Grill will make its American debut at Dobama Theatre in Cleveland Heights this summer. Earlier this year, concert promoter AEG Presents (the company that books shows at the Agora and produces about 30 festivals around the country) held a press conference at the Rock Hall to announce the lineup for InCuya, a summer music festival that takes place on Aug. 25 and 26, on the downtown malls. That lineup will include headliners New Order, Avett Brothers, SZA and AWOLNation. Local acts such as Tropidelic, the Jack Fords and Seafair will perform too, along with Rock Hall inductee Booker T. Singer-songwriter Jim Brickman has said he found it frustrating that he didn’t have better opportunities for collaborative writing sessions while growing up in Northeast Ohio. To provide locals with the support he never received, he’ll hold his inaugural Brickman Bootcamp for Songwriters from July 26 to 29. The three-day event “brings together talented poets, lyricists and musicians to grow their skills, collaborate and discover industry secrets to take their songs to the top.” It will take place in Brickman’s private studios located off East 40th Street and conclude with a public songwriter showcase at the Rock Hall. THE ROCK HALL’S NEW HALL OF FAME Earlier this year, the Rock Hall debuted a new Hall of Fame, an entire floor dedicated to inductees. ComedyConnected.com and the Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation have joined forces to honor Ramsey, via a benefit showcase of some of Cleveland’s funniest comedians. Stand Up Together will feature over 20 comics, with Alan Cox Show cohost Bill Squire serving as headliner. Stand Up Together intends to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention and mental health, and do so with a smile. FRONT TRIENNIAL Fred Bidwell and his team are betting on Cleveland in a big way with the debut of the Front International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art, a new exhibition running July 14 through Sept. 30. The inaugural edition, titled An American City, will cost some $4.2 million and take place throughout Cleveland. Located in spaces both common and unconventional, Front aims to “spotlight particular sites, buildings and locations that carry social, cultural or political significance in relation to the city’s history and current reality.” The event is expected to draw tens of thousands to town. “Cleveland, as a Midwestern rust-belt city — I hate to use the term but others will, so I guess I have to — has an interesting story to tell,” Bidwell says. “And I think this has the potential eventually to be an important slot on the international cultural calendar.”
CLEVELAND SC Semi-pro soccer is back in Cleveland thanks to Cleveland SC, a new expansion team in the National Premier Soccer League. It joins 96 other squads and plays its home games at Don Shula Stadium at John Carroll University in a season that lasts through early July. Jim Florentine Inspired by loudmouth comics like Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Kinison, comedian Jim Florentine began doing standup comedy in the early ’90s. Florentine’s career took off after he released an album of crank phone calls. That led to an appearance on The Howard Stern Show and he became a regular. Florentine has kept plenty busy. He was the co-host of That Metal Show on VH1 Classic. It ran for 14 seasons before VH-1 pulled the plug. And Florentine has had appearances on Girls, Californication and Inside Amy Schumer. STAGE DON’T MISS A MINUTE Passing Strange at Karamu House is the most exciting show in Cleveland By Christine Howey IN THIS MUSICAL, THE COMINGof-age story is familiar, and there are so many excesses it would take five columns to list them all, There is no scenic design to speak of. And often, the narrative arc of the storyline is muddled beyond comprehension. And to top it off the music, which weaves itself intricately into the dialogue, is frequently challenging. And yet, this is the most exciting show on any stage in Cleveland right now, and maybe the most involving one that has appeared in some time. You will be a poorer person if you don’t find a way to see it before it closes on June 3. It’s Passing Strange at Karamu House, featuring rock music by Stew and Heidi Rodewald, with book and lyrics by Stew, who wrote it as an autobiographical memoir of sorts. Jammed with full-tilt energy and invention, the rock musical “goes there” in virtually every scene and every moment, and it’s a freaking rush. With a title inspired by Shakespeare and seven Tony Award nominations in 2008, this is a theater work with an interesting background. We follow the Youth through parts of the 1970s and ’80s, when he’s a young African-American man and music-maker who barely tolerates his mothers’ gospelinfused church in south central Los Angeles. After reaching an epiphany of sorts by smoking weed with the pastor’s son, the Youth decides to find himself and discover “the real” by going on a drug, sex and music tour of Europe. The songs and scenes segue from hash to acid and from punk rock to psychedelic. In some ways, the material is reminiscent of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living In Paris, but with a distinctive rock and synthesizer twist. This is particularly noticeable in the song “Amsterdam,” which recalls the Brel song of the same title. Except instead of talking sailor stuff, it is referencing “Day-glo walls, intense air/lounging ’round in velvet chairs.” The sunny bliss of Amsterdam is replaced by the darkness of Berlin in Act 2, with an opening

number that compares that German city to “a black hole with taxis.” That expedition through some of the darker leather clubs of Berlin is interrupted at one point by “The Black One,” a hilarious song done in traditional musical variety style, complete with bowler hats and canes. It celebrates the Youth’s popularity due to his racial background: “He can wax lyrical, his knowledge was almost empirical/of oppression from the present back to slavery times.” In short, the Youth spends a chunk of his youth on a search for himself, and he has epiphanies aplenty, along with hook-ups with various women and tight if fleeting bonding with other guys who are on roughly the same quest. He’s on the
But the presentation is anything but tired. Right from the start, when the Youth’s mom switches back and forth from a cartoonish black woman dialect to a more nuanced voice, you know you’re in for something different. In the demanding role of the Youth, Justin C. Woody sings with both poignancy and passion, and he keeps the whole enterprise humming with his infectious energy. As the Youth travels from Amsterdam to Berlin, Woody conveys his character’s wide-eyed innocence and desperate desire to find, you know, something. He is well matched by Darius J. Stubbs, who plays and sings the narrator as the older and more temperate man who was the Youth.

Stubbs is the Youth in grown-up mode, and his calm commentary and crooning serves as a useful buffer between the often-frenzied activities. But Stubbs is also capable of kicking out the jams vocally, as he does in the rock anthem “Work the Wound.” Those performers are supported in glorious style by Treva Offutt,
who is funny and touching as the Mother. And the four-person chorus — Carlos Antonio Cruz, Joshua McElroy, Mary-Frances Miller and CorLesia Smith — each add stellar cameo characterizations that are so sharp you could cut yourself if you’re not careful. Specifically, keep an eye out for Cruz’s decadentto-the-max Mr. Venus, Smith’s insightful Desi, Miller’s spot-on punk rocker Sudebey, and McElroy’s vulnerable Terry. The entire cast handles the singing with aplomb, backed by the fine vocalist Chantrell Lewis and a four-person, kick-ass band led by Ed Ridley Jr. Nathan A. Lilly, as director, has taken this material, which is surprisingly witty and wise — as one character says, “Life is a mistake that only art can correct” — and has ignited his cast so they inhabit a galaxy of characters with different accents and attitudes. Passing Strange covers a few years, a lot of miles, and many musical genres. And the two and a half hour show doesn’t have a single boring minute in it. Anywhere. Do yourself a favor and don’t miss any of those minutes.

EAT A LEG UP Prep Kitchen-CLE aims to help budding food entrepreneurs turn a calling into a career By Douglas Trattner DANIELLE KAUFMAN WAS working as a teacher for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, but while on maternity leave she stumbled into a second career before the arrival of her new daughter. “I was hanging around the house waiting for her to come and I was, like, I love to bake so I’m going to try this decorated cookie thing,” she explains. Like many cottage food operators, Kaufman was baking out of her home kitchen in Solon and selling to family, friends and at local farmer’s markets. Her nascent business, MK Sweets, offers a variety of colorful handdesigned cookies that look as appealing as they taste, but the busier Kaufman got, the more impractical her workspace became. “I just felt that I was outgrowing my kitchen,” she reports. “And I wanted to be able to separate my work life from my home life. It’s hard to put work down and spend time with my family when it’s always there waiting for me.” A quick Google search for commercial kitchen space landed her at the front door of Prep Kitchen-CLE, a brand-new shareduse kitchen space on the west bank of the Flats. Launched by physician, real estate developer and entrepreneur Rafid Fadul, the urban culinary incubator was built precisely for folks like Kaufman. “So many people come to me and say, ‘Hey, can I rent space from you?’” says Fadul, who also developed the bustling Tenk West Bank complex nearby. “It became obvious that there was a demand for this. Cleveland has really established itself as a culinary destination and there is supplydriven demand for local food products.” Fadul spent “way too much time and money” converting a sordid warehouse building into a
gleaming commercial kitchen just steps from the Cuyahoga River. The 2,100-square-foot footprint is divided into two distinct spaces, a roomy Chef’s Kitchen outfitted with a range, oven, broiler, deepfryer, griddle and plenty of counter space, and the Prep Kitchen, a slightly smaller work space that’s no less equipped. The spaces are rented by the hour on a first-come, first-served basis. Users can make reservations up to three months in advance,
and chef Roberto Rodriguez, owner of Orale Mexican Cuisine at the West Side Market. Together, they discussed the possibility of using some of the space as rentable commercial kitchens. “At the time I was thinking about closing my restaurant and I wanted to look for a place to do my cooking,” explains Rodriguez, who did all of his cooking and catering out of his now-closed restaurant on West 25th Street. “It was so hard to find anywhere, besides cooking out

and the rates are as low as $25 per hour with a two hour minimum. The use of long-term dry, cold and freezer storage is available for additional fees. Also available for rent is the Chef’s Table, a small but attractive event space attached to the Chef’s Kitchen with a 12-seat table. Thanks to the fully equipped line, the area is ideal for meetings, catered affairs, or for users wanting to show off their novel food business to potential buyers. More than just kitchen space, Prep Kitchen-CLE aims to help budding food entrepreneurs turn a calling into a career. Fadul, coowner Emily Thomas, and even tenants like Rodriguez are eager to
share best practices and advice to develop their business. “Our goal is to help people grow from the idea stage to a small business, to not just be the space you need but also get you in front of a buyer or help with brand design — all the components that go into creating a successful business,” says Fadul. Kaufman appears to be well on her way to doing just that. Since moving her sweets business out of her home and into Prep KitchenCLE, she has landed accounts at Nordstrom E-Bar at Beachwood Place Mall and in Pittsburgh. By being in a licensed commercial kitchen, she also can now ship her food products nationwide to Etsy customers, something cottage operators are prohibited from doing. But don’t expect to see MK Sweets cookies on every store shelf soon. “For now the appeal of the job is that it’s part-time and flexible, but next steps for me is to probably hire someone to help bake and package my products,” she says. “The job was always fun to begin with, but now I really like going to work every day.”

The health-focused eatery is not vegetarian, but it does focus on fresh, seasonal produce, making it a good fit for the healthcare provider. “When I began this project, my idea was to bring a concept where the vegetables are at the front and cover the needs that the spectrum of fast food restaurants don’t cover,” explains Andrés, who was in Cleveland for a preview event. “The good news is that over the last few years since I’ve had this idea, not because of me, but
you can see that this is an area that’s being populated more and more. For me to be in a hospital environment, a university environment, I think are our low-hanging fruit in terms of customers and we need more of these types of concepts.” Andrés launched the vegetableforward fast-casual concept in 2015. Bright, colorful bowls are filled with various combinations of greens, grains, vegetables, sauces and toppings. Vegetables that are served cooked are flash-boiled to order in salinated water. The Frida Kale contains rice, sweet potatoes, kale, cherry tomatoes, scallions, corn nuts and pumpkin seeds, for example, and is topped with black bean and spicy tomato sauces, cranberries and lemon honey
dressing. The Gazpacho Bowl tops a base of fresh gazpacho with romaine, scallion, tomato, cucumber, sprouts, radish and extra virgin olive oil. Sandwiches like the namesake Beefsteak Tomato Burger feature inseason tomatoes, pickled red onion, sprouts, caper-herb mayo on a brioche bun, while the Beetsteak Sandwich swaps the tomato for a marinated beet. Customers can add salmon or chicken for an additional charge. The new eatery is part of a $10-million makeover of the 16,000-square-foot second-level food court. In design for two years and construction for one, the totally rebuilt space features six concepts, including Beefsteak. Others include Starbucks, a flatbread station, roasted meat carvery, grill station, and pho
and bone broth provider. The cafes are operated by Bon Appetit Management Company, which provides food service to the Clinic as well as corporations, universities and museums around the country. “Our CEO and founder Fedele Bauccio has a relationship with José,” says Bon Appetit GM Matthew Mathlage. “When we won the award of getting the Cleveland Clinic, it just made sense that Beefsteak would be a part of it because of their model of vegetable-forward, minimal protein, local sourcing and doing everything with a purpose. It was just a real good fit for everyone.” While typically designed to serve those working in the building, this concept will likely attract a broader audience, Mathlage believes.

“About 70 percent of our guests are the employees: the nurses, the doctors, the caregivers on campus and then the families and patients,” he says. “The Cleveland Clinic is pretty much a city unto itself. But I think with Beefsteak here, we’ll get a lot more from the outside, especially considering it’s the first one this far west.” As the food service provider, Bon Appetit does everything from hiring and managing the staff to sourcing and preparing the food. They partner with Beefsteak’s chief of produce Bennett Haynes to source the food, 20 percent of which comes from farms within 150 miles. According to chef and owner Brian Okin, Saturday, June 2, will be the last night of service for Cork & Cleaver Social Kitchen (8130 Broadview Rd., 440-627-6449) in Broadview Heights. Since the restaurant opened five years ago, it has enjoyed not only steady business by “bringing a taste of the Big City to the ’burbs,” but also raked in awards like Best New Restaurant, Best of Cleveland, and countless other honors, not the least of which was being invited to cook at the James Beard House in New York. When it came time to renew the lease, however, the chef made the difficult decision to cut the rope. “I don’t have to close down the restaurant, I’m choosing to because we have Polpetta and I think that that concept has more potential moving forward, so why not focus on that,” Okin explains. “It’s a hard thing because it’s been our baby for five years, but I’m trying to stay positive.” Polpetta, a joint venture from the Cork and Cleaver team and Porco Lounge, will open in June in the former home of River Dog Cafe (19900 Detroit Rd.) in Rocky River. The meatball-centric concept has been in proof-of-concept phase for the past year at Porco Lounge. Okin describes the concept as “your basic build-yourown setup where you pick your ball, pick your sauce, pick your side.” As for the folks who currently work
at Cork & Cleaver, Okin says, “We have 12 employees and every one of them has a job with us at Polpetta if they want it.” And if things go according to plan, so too will many others. “We don’t want to become a national chain; I’m not looking to do that,” he says. “I’m looking to have three to five Polpetta locations in the right neighborhoods around Cleveland. We’re always trying to reinvent the wheel and this is a concept that doesn’t exist in Cleveland, and I think we need to focus on that now.”
Hyde Park Restaurant Group Announces Plans for Gamekeeper’s Tavern Space in Chagrin Falls In January, we broke the news that Hyde Park Restaurant Group would be the new owners of Gamekeeper’s Tavern, the iconic Chagrin Falls restaurant that closed last spring after 40 years. Having just signed the lease on the property, founder Joe Saccone had little information to share at that time, other than the fact that big changes would be in store. Today we learned a little more about what will await diners when the new eatery opens in mid-summer. For starters, the restaurant will be called Bull & Bird Steakhouse (87 West St.), a new concept from the hospitality group that also runs 12 Hyde Park Prime Steakhouses in four states, along with ML Tavern and Jekyll’s Kitchen in the Cleveland area and Black Point Steakhouse and Stack City Burger Bar in Columbus. For now, Saccone is sticking with his description of the place as a “chefinspired, boutique steakhouse with European influences.” Some of the biggest changes taking place are physical. Hyde Park has undertaken a complete transformation of the Gamekeepers space inside and out. The exterior that faces West Street is being reworked into a year-around covered patio that will expand the original bar capacity from 24 to 64 seats and feature a new fireplace. The interior, formerly chopped up into several smaller rooms, will be renovated to an open floor plan that offers views throughout the dining room.

WHEN SHE PERFORMED AT THE State Theatre last year with headliner Bryan Ferry, singer-songwriter Judith Owen immediately endeared herself by greeting the crowd with a “Hello, Cleveland.” She had every right to use the phrase: Her husband, Harry Shearer, plays a character in Spinal Tap, the cult classic that spawned the expression. Owen returns to town to perform at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, at Nighttown. In a recent phone interview from a Washington, D.C. tour stop, she spoke about some of the tracks on her new album, redisCOVERed.
“Summer Nights” “I labored over the lyrics. The thing about ‘tell me more/tell me more’ is that feeling that a relationship would have never ended. [Once I understood that], it became a jazz torch song. The moment I sing the first line, “summer loving,” you can feel a shimmer going through the room. Then, people sign on and cry and get upset. It’s one of the most successful re-imaginings that I’ve done. It’s insanely different from the original.”
“Play That Funky Music”
“Hotline Bling” “I said to my husband, ‘What do you think is the most extreme thing I could do for this album?’ He didn’t even pause for a nanosecond and said, ‘Drake’s “Hotline Bling.”’ I studied the lyrics long and hard. The melody is one thing, but you can’t change the lyrics. What I do is I edit them, so they make sense to me and my life. What I did relate to was this experience where I was so in love with someone and they weren’t that into me, so every waking moment was watching the phone and waiting for him to call. It’s a true song about one side of love.”
“Black Hole Sun” “I’m a huge Chris Cornell fan. I am someone who has struggled with depression my whole life. I remember hearing this and thinking it’s the greatest musical approximation of depression because it sounds like you’re wading through molasses and you’re numb and drowning. That was my life for so many years.”
“Cherokee Louise” “I’m a huge Joni Mitchell fan. This song stunned me because of the words and what she was talking about. Finally, people are talking about this properly and it’s out in the open, and there she was nailing it. Because I think she’s one of the greatest poets ever, I wanted to focus on the lyrics. ROCK OF AGES Def Leppard’s Vivian Campbell talks about teaming up with tour mates Journey By Jeff Niesel CLASSIC ROCK ACTS DEF Leppard and Journey toured together for some 12 years. Now the two bands are back on the road this summer for a tour that features both stadium and arena concerts. The tour comes to the Q at 7 p.m. on Monday. One of only five artists to sell 10 million copies of two albums, Def Leppard, a British hard-rock band, crossed over into the pop charts with its 1983 album, Pyromania. The release delivered radio hits like “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages.” The band also recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of its other smash hit, Hysteria, by reissuing a remastered version of the album. Given the group’s longevity and continued popularity, the inevitable discussion of a Rock Hall nomination often arises. The band’s been eligible for 14 years but has never been nominated. Guitarist Vivian Campbell recently weighed in on the matter. “We are becoming one of those bona fide classic bands,” he says in a recent phone call from his Los Angeles home, where he was celebrating his daughter’s 17th birthday on what he said was a rare day off. “Leppard has a lot to offer in that regard. We’re as close to the original. I’m the new guy, and I’ve been here for 26 years. [Guitarist] Phil [Collen] is the next new guy, and
he’s been in the band for 36 years, and the other guys go back to the late ’70s. We’re an original band with a strong catalog.” Campbell says now that the band’s back catalog has become available digitally (licensing issues previously stood in the way), he anticipates the group will attract some new young fans too. “It’s not just that our audience is growing, but [having young fans at the shows] breathes new life into us on stage,” he says. “When we’re performing, and we see young people, it goes full circle and helps us as a band, and we play better.” Campbell wouldn’t directly answer

It didn’t win a Grammy or even get nominated. The awards are wonderful, but at the end of the day, what matters to us is seeing people come to the shows.” Campbell joined the band in April of 1992, after original guitarist Steve Clark had passed away. He played a club gig with the band at McGonagle’s in Dublin; that show was simply a warm-up concert for an arena-sized tribute to Queen’s Freddie Mercury that the band would

whether he thought that some of the band’s key influences — acts such as Judas Priest, Motorhead and Iron Maiden, for example — should be inducted. “I don’t keep track of that and have a strong opinion about other bands,” he says. “I was a Def Leppard fan before I was in the band. I bought the Hysteria album twice. I had a cassette of it, and I wore it out. It was one of the very

long time. The one thing I remember thinking about that day was how difficult it must have been for the other guys. They had only been on stage with Steve Clark, and now, they were here with this Irish guy.” Last year, the band released the concert film And There Will Be a Next Time — Live, which was shot in Detroit, but it also continues to write new material, and that’s something that Campbell says keeps the group invigorated. And he was particularly looking forward to rejoining Journey on the road for a co-headlining tour of classic rock hits. “We’ll close one night, and they’ll close the next night,” says Campbell. “Both bands will play 90-minute sets. They’re the one band that’s closest to Def Leppard in that they have so many hit songs. I grew up in Ireland and knew of them, but they weren’t the massive band that they are here. Over the years, I’ve heard these hit songs, and I forgot how many they had. It’s similar to Def Leppard. When people come to a Def Leppard show, they forget how many hit songs there are. Pretty much every song is a hit song. It’s an exceptional package when you put both bands together.”

I like watersports, and I heard about a guy in a rural area who holds piss parties in his backyard. I found a mailing list for those interested in piss play, and it wasn’t long before he posted about one of these parties. People on the list talk a big game, but no one else has stepped up to host something, including me. (I would, but four neighbors look into my backyard.) The host has very simple rules for who can attend: You have to identify as a guy and wear masculine attire. I get to the party, and there were about four guys and the host. I had a good time. The host had plenty of drinks out, towels, chairs, canopies, and candles to ward off the mosquitos. I’ve been back a couple times. Everyone is friendly enough and there’s the right amount of perversion. So what’s the problem? The host. He’s loud and annoying. He insists on putting classical music on (it doesn’t set the mood very well). He tells the same lame jokes every time he’s pissing on someone. He will complain that people say they’re coming and don’t show. If you are having a moment with someone, he will invariably horn in on the action. I’ve tried to make it clear that we are not looking for company, but he doesn’t take the hint. I’ve gotten to the point where it’s not worth the effort to go. Do I just get over it, or say something privately? — Person Exasperates Enthusiast The advice I gave a different reader about dealing with a guest horning in on the action at an orgy applies in your case: “Even kind and decent people can be terrible about taking hints — especially when doing so means getting cut out of a drunken fuckfest. So don’t hint, tell. There’s no rule of etiquette that can paper over the discomfort and awkwardness of that moment, so you’ll just have to power through it.” Swap out “drunken fuckfest” for “drenchin’ piss scene,” and the advice works — up to a point, PEE, because the person in your case who needs telling isn’t one of the guests, he’s the host. (And he sounds like a gracious host. I mean, drinks, towels, and canapés* at a piss party? Swank.) But your host’s behavior sounds genuinely annoying. Hosting a sex party doesn’t give someone the right to insert himself into someone else’s scene, and
stupid jokes have the power to kill the mood and murder the boners. So what do you do? Well, you could send your host an e-mail or give him a call. Thank him for the invite, let him know you appreciate the effort he goes to (such delicious canapés!), and then tell him why some people say they’re coming and don’t show: You’re too loud, your music is awful, you have a bad habit of horning in on the action, and you need to learn some new jokes to tell when you’re pissing on someone (or, better yet, not tell any jokes at all). But I don’t think ticking off a list of his shortcomings is going to get you anywhere other than crossed off the invite list to future parties. So why not make your own piss party? You don’t need a big backyard — I mean, presumably your place has a tub. Supplement your tub with a couple of kiddie pools on top of some plastic tarp laid down on the living room or basement floor. Ask your guests to keep it in the tub, pool, or on the tarp. You get to choose the guys, you get to select the music, and, as host, you can lay down the law about making jokes and horning in on the action: Both are forbidden, and joketelling horner-inners will be asked to pull up their pants and leave. One last thought: If you have it in you to invest some time in getting to know this guy — if you treat him like a human being — you might be able to draw him out on something that clearly frustrates him: guys who say they’re coming to the party but don’t show. If he seems genuinely baffled, PEE, that’s your opening to ask if he’d like some constructive feedback. If he says yes, you can very gently run through your list of ways to improve his parties: no jokes, better music, and a “no horning in” rule for all (not just for him). * Yes, I know: There were canopies at the party, not canapés — tents, not hors d’oeuvres. But I read it as canapés at first, and the mental image of piss players daintily eating canapés between scenes was so much more entertaining than the mental image of piss players huddling under canopies that I stuck with my original reading.
