Locked ’n’ Loaded Learnin’ MARK REAGAN

On a hot August day 50 years ago, a man named Charles Whitman climbed the tower at the University of Texas-Austin and opened fire. He shot 49 people, murdering 16 of them. During the hours-long attack, plenty of people went home and grabbed hunting rifles and engaged in a shootout before a police officer eventually made his way up the tower, where he finally managed to kill Whitman. Fifty years to the day after that tragedy August 1, 1966, a law passed by the Texas Legislature went into effect permitting anyone with a concealed carry license to bring their handgun on public university campuses. The law’s proponents say it makes college campuses safer. Critics call the legislation part of a broader effort by Texas Republicans to expand gun rights

in the state. Students showing up on public college campuses for fall semester will at some point likely encounter training from college administrators to understand the dos and don’ts of campus carry. University of Texas-San Antonio spokesman Joe Izbrand told us that the university spent July and August sending reminders to students about the law. And once students, faculty and staff show up for the fall semester, they will be required to take online training that will walk them through UTSA’s campus carry policies. Over at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, spokeswoman Cavett McCrary said the school’s police department held a series of training sessions through July for faculty, staff and students. During the semester, the university will use social media to show students where they can

and can’t carry concealed handguns. Private colleges are allowed to opt out of the law. And all private colleges in the state have opted out, except for one. However, concealed carry on college campuses is not a carte blanche deal. The law still allows school officials to carve out gun-free zones. At UTSA, residence halls and housing units are off limits to concealed carriers, along with labs that house dangerous and flammable substances. Counseling and health services centers are no-go zones for people packing heat, as are child care facilities, sporting venues and youth events. At Texas A&M-San Antonio, you cannot take a weapon into to counseling centers, recreation and fitness centers, or into any facility leased by a third-party. Faculty and staff can ban concealed carry in private offices if the university’s

president signs off on it. Just days before the law took effect, UTSA President Ricardo Romo changed course on an initial decision to not allow faculty with private offices to ban concealed carriers from bringing in their weapons. “When we reviewed the policies of other UT System institutions, and the feedback they received from the Board of Regents, we recognized an opportunity to further address the concerns of our faculty and staff while remaining compliant with the law,” Romo said of the change of heart. There is staunch opposition to campus carry from faculty and students. The decision mirrors one made by UT-Austin regents who voted in July to allow professors to ban the concealed carry of weapons from private offices. Professors must give verbal notification and, if possible, provide written notification. While campus carry is now the law of the land and it’s unlikely that it will be repealed, three University of Texas-Austin professors filed a federal lawsuit against the school and the state in a desperate attempt to stop campus carry before the fall semester begins. Professors Jennifer Lynn Glass, Lisa Moore and Mia Carter filed the lawsuit in early July, alleging that allowing students to carry concealed handguns infringes on their First Amendment rights to academic freedom. The professors’ concerns rose because of the controversial subject matter they teach. For instance, Glass teaches about fertility and reproduction, meaning her classes sometimes touch on topics like abortion and unwanted pregnancy. She says she tries to generate debate on the subject matter to engage her students. Moore teaches a class called “LGBT Literature and Culture.” She says she’s already been accused by a student of pushing the “homosexual agenda” and says she has had other threatening students. “The possibility of guns in the classroom would only have exacerbated the deleterious effect on academic discussion and freedom for those in class,” the lawsuit states. Carter’s teaching includes debates about imperialism and power structures as they’re related to sexuality and gender; Carter, too, says she has been threatened by students in the past. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, however, called their fears ridiculous and has asked that the case be dismissed. “There is only one apparent basis for their fear: Plaintiffs think the adults in their class who have been licensed by the State to carry handguns state-wide are ticking time-bombs who are likely to commit acts of violence if they are allowed to carry a handgun in class where they are exposed to the Professors’ ideas. That is ridiculous,” Paxton wrote in a motion to dismiss. UT-Austin has joined Paxton in asking that the lawsuit be dismissed. The university says the professors have no standing to bring a federal lawsuit against campus carry because no federal law has been broken. “Because they have not been deprived of any constitutionally protected interest, Plaintiffs lack standing,” UT-Austin’s motion to dismiss states. The school also argues that the professors don’t have a First Amendment right to challenge university policy, adding that the professors simply don’t have enough evidence to prove that the presence of concealed handguns will stifle free speech in the learning environment. The professors likely face an uphill battle they probably won’t win.

Where to Get the Sweet Discounts ERIC MORENO

Alright, let’s be real for a minute. There are quite a few sweet perks to being a college student. You get to walk that fine line between being a kid and being an adult. For many, your sole job is to get up and learn every day. And there are some parties to attend every now and again, right? Another great perk for being a studious, hardworking, fiscally conscientious future leader of America is student discounts. Fast food restaurants, clothing stores, movie theaters, big chains, mom-and-pop shops, if you’re a college student, you can score big on savings at spots all across the Alamo City. The next time you roll out of your dorm room, make sure you bring your student ID to take advantage of some great deals.

Clothing So, you’ve got a closet/hamper/ floor full of sick T-shirts and killer kicks. But this is college! Tastes change with every new season that Yeezy puts out a line of clothing. Bottom line, you’re going to need some new clothes. Just show your student ID for 15 percent off at Banana Republic, J. Crew and The Limited, and 10 percent off at Urban Outfitters. Be smart, be frugal, be fashionable.

Food Fact: everyone needs to eat. Second fact: one cannot survive long on hot dogs and ramen noodles. So what’s a hungry undergrad to do? Most Burger King, McDonald’s, Subway, Carl’s Jr., Taco Cabana, and Dairy Queen locations near campuses in town offer anywhere from 10 to 20 percent off orders when you present a valid student ID. Domino’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, Papa John’s — same deal. Pizza! Be sure to check the location before you place your order, just in case you’re counting your pennies. Computers & Software You can’t be a student today, especially a college student, without reliable tech gear. Tablets, smart phones, laptops, desktops — you’re going to need some combination of these to get your work done. Microsoft offers an Office Suite especially for college students for $99.99 online at microsoftstore.com/student. For phones, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all offer special college student discounts of various amounts depending on your plan and your phone. Best Buy also has deals on laptops, tablets and desktops for students who shop online and in their stores. And at the Apple Store, the secret code is to ask for their “Education Discount.” Arts & Entertainment Sometimes, frequently quite honestly, college students need to

blow off some metaphorical steam. What’s better/more wholesome/relaxing than an evening at the movies? AMC, Regal, and Alamo Drafthouse all offer discounted student tickets. To get these tickets, you’ll need your student ID. Looking for a little more high-brow entertainment? The McNay Art Museum, San Antonio Museum of Art and Briscoe Museum of Western Art all offer discounts for students. Not enough? How about catching some sweet NBA action on a student’s dime? Our hometown Spurs have a program called Spurs U where they announce on Twitter and Facebook if tickets are available. Bring your student ID to the box office and get $5 H-E-B Fan Zone tickets or, for big ballers out there, $40 for lower-level seating. Viva Los Spurs y Los Discounts!

Online Shopping So you want to do some shopping online? Well, the mecca of online shopping is Amazon, of course. If you sign up for Amazon Prime Student, you get tons of discounts on all kinds of items, shipping discounts and deals on streaming videos and music. Students can also get up to 80 percent back on textbooks they resell to Amazon. It’s a pretty good deal. Perhaps the second most popular online store, eBay also offers discounts for students, including 60 percent off certain clothing and electronics. And since these are straight up-purchases, you don’t have to deal with anyone sniping you on an auction. sacurrent.com /// COLLEGE GUIDE 2016-2017

Ones to

Watch NICK JOYNER

A Movie for Every College Occasion

I believe in the transformational and emotional power of movies, and the ability of a movie to function as Ambien, a shot of bad tequila, a release of self-pity, and everything else you’d ever need to alter your mood. College will smack you with everything that you’ve never thought to prepare for, so you should start building up an arsenal of cinematic defense. While this just scrapes the surface of the university experience, you should find something that applies to whatever funk you’ve gotten into or situation you need saving from.

Nightcap Movies // You’re going to watch this alone, as a reward for the hard studying or as a treat to ease you down from a night of lechery and debauchery. It’s the visual equivalent of a glass of warm milk or a swig of bourbon, to balance your emotions and perspectivize where you’re currently at. While it might be comforting to cling to your favorite serial rewatch (The Breakfast Club, Old School, The Goonies), try something new, with the perfect mix of melancholia and bubbliness to push you deeper into the safety of your thoughts and feels. Frances Ha Mumblecore’s crowning gem will bite you with its depiction of a woman adrift and then nuzzle you with Frances’ unfailing tenacity. The film’s Brooklynites, hopping from job to job and sublease to sublease, live the life of college students even as they push 30, an image scarier than any horror film to a senior who just wants to be gainfully employed. But our heroine is fearless and flawed, brimming with make-do and an infectious hope that’s transferred to the viewer as soon as the credits roll. She makes you want to just get up and fight, and her story will leave you smiling with a quiet positivity that makes the best of slumbers. 26

COLLEGE GUIDE 2016-2017 /// sacurrent.com

Do the Right Thing Even though its themes of community empowerment and police brutality are particularly timely, at its heart, Do the Right Thing will win you over with its honesty about the course of personal growth. Spike Lee plays Mookie, a boy trying to figure out how to balance workplace racial tension with his ability to provide for a family he started much too early. His is the perfect college dilemma, getting by and finding fun in the face of violently pressing concerns. Just like Frances, Mookie finds the middle way in a time of confusing morality. Calling it the pre-bedtime consolation would be an understatement.

Pregame Movies // It’s that weird limbo time when you’ve gotten out of classes and started imbibing with your friends, but it’s nowhere near time to head out to the parties. Shit seems to start later and later each weekend, and you can only get ready three hours in advance so many times. This is the sacred time of bonding with your hallmates or housemates, of easy spirits and calming nerves. You want a reverse nightcap, some jungle juice to get things poppin’. Trainspotting If you thought this movie about drug addicts would be too harsh

for a group-watch before heading to the function, you were wrong. Trainspotting is colorful, funny, and has one of the best soundtracks to ever grace cineplex speakers. It follows Renton’s path to independence from substance and crime, with the characters, action, and melodrama of a perfectly executed after-school special. His journey through squalor even peaks in a happy ending that will leave you and your fellow winos ready to kick in some doors. ▲ Texas Chainsaw Massacre Slant called it the greatest horror film of all time and I’m not one to necessarily disagree. Besides being in the holy canon, it’s a prime whitesploitation slasher film that’ll make you fear rural Texas and your beloved barbecue. A short, well-executed flick, this 1974 gem will really get the adrenaline flowing for a night of bad decisions, and make you walk a little more quickly when you’re returning to your apartment in the dark. There’s nothing better to watch in a group than 1970s horror. No other genre period is so ripe with terror and opportunities for ridicule. Spike some soda and watch it on the biggest screen you can find, and it won’t feel like you’re killing time at all.

When Someone Finally Accepts Your Invitation to Netflix and Chill // I hate the term as much as anyone, but it does convey a universal conceptual sentiment so rare these days. A true N&C film can be an icebreaker, a conversational lubricant, a bridge to intimacy, or simply something that inspires mutual enjoyment. But the romantic output is only as strong as the film itself, and the work it does in vacuuming the nerves and awkwardness from the room. Films with bold themes and content that are comfortable in their extremity make the best conversation without icing the mood, precisely what you’re looking for. ▲ Boogie Nights You might not get through the two and a half hours of the film before you or your companion gets antsy or sleepy — Paul Thomas Anderson’s sexiest work moves through expanses of time and situational drama so easily that it’s ripe with opportunities for pausing and resuming. Imagine the temporal segmentation of Boyhood but trade in an endowed young man growing into the pornography industry in its golden days. It’s got a bangin’ soundtrack, gratuitous sex, disco-drenched cinematography, and a melodramatic facade that does well to paint over some of the darker undercurrents with humor and mirth. Even if your movie date reaches the slow decline of Dirk Diggler and Amber Waves, you can pretend that Boogie Nights is attempting black comedy and be happy that you didn’t try to watch There Will Be Blood. The Evil Dead While its slightly more played-out and humorous sequel is ideal horror-comedy fun, the original Evil Dead (1981) is less tiring in its self-consciousness, content to be a movie where the college kids on a weekend getaway can die senselessly. The camera work in the opening sequence is sufficiently unsettling, but the ensuing 80 minutes are more entertaining than frightening, as a Netflix and Chill flick should be. The gore is dated enough to transcend gross-out, moving into campy territory but still intent on inspiring terror. It’ll get the two of you curled up and provide the opportunity for someone to play tough guy when you get to the basement scene. Just make sure you’ve seen it beforehand.

When You Get Dumped / Crippling Loneliness Is Encroaching / Academic Probation Seems Too Probable // College seems to have more downs than it should, but maybe it’s just in relation to the extreme highs. Sometimes everything comes crashing down at once, and goddamn right you want to wallow it. The years of teenage angst are finite, and should not be wasted in eternal search of media that will cheer you up. You need movies that validate your pity, that turn you a darker shade of blue, that push you to near crying. It’s the only way to truly get your sad sack of a self out of bed, and movies with a sense of hopelessness only help to accelerate the healing process.

Photo Cred | www.maycarlson.com

Y Tu Mamá También It’s a road movie, and everything in it relates back to sex. Y Tu Mamá También follows two best friends and their trip across the Mexican countryside with an older woman, as they search for the perfect beach. It’s a coming-of-age story, but not of positive realizations. The movie’s pain seems to come from its surprising sadness. The journey isn’t one of healing or revelation, but one of change and division. Luisa brings things to the surface in Julio and Tenoch’s relationship and forces a maturity on them they were never prepared for, with an ending that punches you with more sadness than you could ever hope for, without the shock tactic of death or disloyalty. ▲ Welcome to the Dollhouse If you’re into schadenfreude, you might find yourself laughing but you’ll probably feel bad afterwards. Todd Solondz’s ‘90s classic Welcome to the Dollhouse is about a suburban middle-schooler named Dawn Wiener and her search for allies. She’s at the crest of her awkward period, looking for love in the entirely wrong locales. The movie is unrelentingly cruel in its treatment of “Wienerdog” that you start to question her immense capacity to endure unpleasantness. And it leaves you wondering if she ever finds a silver lining. If anything, there’s comfort in knowing that you could have it so much worse and that you’ve escaped the hell that is the junior high lunchroom. sacurrent.com /// COLLEGE GUIDE 2016-2017

Look out for these five kinds of wanna-be profs

TA Trouble The one who loves to overshare Within seconds of being handed a class syllabus, this grad student has already directed your attention to their personal information at the top of the page. Now you know their full name, email, personal phone, address, LinkedIn profile, Vine account, social security number and insurance provider. “Call me if you have any questions. Really. Please,” they tell you. What’s that you say? I can let myself in at your off-campus apartment with the key under the shattered flowerpot to the left of the front porch? ... I think I’ll just let that Facebook friend request sit unanswered for now.

The one who gets pissed when you actually show up for office hours God forbid you had a question about the scoring criteria for the paper that makes up 37 percent of your grade for the entire class,

32

COLLEGE GUIDE 2016-2017 /// sacurrent.com

decided to skip lunch and walk to the other side of campus to talk to your TA. Deep within the bowels of the history building, down a forgotten a hallway, you find the “office” you’ve been searching for. You cross the threshold into the stuffy room, and the first thing you hear is an audible sigh. The TA’s laptop smacks shut, headphones are ripped off, and they fix a cold stare in your direction. After five minutes of useless back-andforth, you realize your TA doesn’t understand the assignment any better than you. Only made worse when you consider this person will be the one grading your paper.

The enabler This one incentivizes your laziness, giving you printouts of the key concepts covered week to week. In fact, they’ve made the class so easy you almost feel bad complaining about it. While your friends wither under the harsh

grading policies of other TAs, yours constantly hints about what will be on the exam. They’ve taken the mystery out of the hunt, removed the terror from exam season, and you feel robbed of a college experience. If only they hadn’t told you all the class secrets they were “technically not supposed to share,” maybe your lazy ass could stop sliding by for once.

The TAILF When you saw them at that divey yet tasteful bar two blocks off campus in their street clothes, you could barely believe your eyes. The timid, quietly sexy teacher’s assistant looks so much better without their professional and still unkept grad student getup. You bump into their pub table and mutter an awkward hello without hinting at your ardor. But you’d rather ruin your own grades than try and possibly fail at going after what you want.

IDE GU

The one who undermines the professor Sure, this TA dresses in business casual for every lecture and carries a large binder that zips up and doubles as a messenger bag. They also love to email you after hours about opportunities for supplementary reading that won’t be on the

exam and is solely for the purposes of your “edification.” They love to tell you about their current research and the way things were when they were in undergrad. But all of their review sessions are like little private mutinies against the professor. It even

bleeds into their emails about the course. “While Dr. Stevens would like to attribute X to Z, I would argue ...” and so on. Which can get real confusing real quick. Make sure to leave them the worst TA reviews, because you never want to see this monster get tenure.

Pro Tips:

Tips provided by Thomas Baez, director of UTSA Counseling Services.

How to stay sane your freshman year 1. Academics are important, but so is a healthy lifestyle. Maintain good eating, sleeping and exercise habits. 2. If you have an ongoing physical or mental health condition, be proactive and schedule your health appointments early, instead of waiting for problems to start.

3. Recognize early on that feelings of sadness, changes in sleep/eating patterns, loneliness, relationship conflicts, and severe anxiety may be signs that you need additional support. Seek help early on from your campus’ confidential counseling resources.

4. Living with new roommates can

lead to lifelong friendships, but can be complex when roommates are of different backgrounds and value systems. Respecting these differences and being willing to compromise can promote growth and resolution of issues. CONTINUED ON PAGE 36 ▶

5. For those who identify

as LGBTQ, browse for printed or online information regarding offices and employees on campus that have completed LGBToriented ally training to identify affirmative spaces on campus. Also, check for student organizations and social media groups that can provide safe and supportive outlets for meeting others within the LGBTQ community.

6. Maintain ongoing

communication with parents at designated times. Set up a regular phone or FaceTime chat. Don’t forget your siblings that are still at home. Keep in touch by phone, text or social media.

10. College may be much harder and rigorous than high school. Reach out to professors, teaching assistants and a tutoring/ learning center if you need extra help. 7. If you are a commuter

student, plan to spend more time than just your class time on campus. Stay on campus to study so you can be part of campus life.

8. If living on campus, get to know your Resident Assistant (RA), the housing staff and your neighbors. 9. When looking for a job, find jobs on campus or near your college. These employers are often very supportive of adjusting work schedules, and you will develop new college friends.

11. Being the first to go to

college in your family can be an important achievement with significant challenges. With hard work, and additional support from family, friends and mentors, you can be successful. Look for support programs on campus that can provide academic, financial and mentoring assistance for college success

12. Early on, get to know your campus community resources and support services. 13. Make use of calendars

and planners to balance and organize all activities including academic, extracurricular, and personal.

14. Recognize that in

this transition, feelings of excitement and anxiety are normal and can be managed with support.

15. Be patient: New

relationships do not develop overnight.

16. Transitioning to college can be a lonely period, get involved early on in the overall college experience by joining organizations, clubs and recreational campus activities.

IDE GU

Battle Buddies NICK JOYNER

You forge a special bond with people you’ve met in class. Usually friends of friends, people you’ve seen online, or owners of laptops decked out with stickers of cool bands, they ride the rollercoaster with you. Your study group is there with you when everything finally clicks in the basement of the library at 2 a.m. They’re there to ease your anxieties about what’s gonna be on the exam. They’ll even tolerate the bullshit mnemonic devices you come up with as long as you share your portion of the notes. But study groups aren’t all coffee-run fun and team flashcard games. Besides the widely varying amounts of effort put into the entire enterprise, there’s the underlying awareness that you’re all sorta using each other. And after the triumph of the last night of studying, the congratulatory hugs goodnight, and the knowing pre-exam smirks across the lecture room, there’s the realization that you don’t really know these people and probably never will. After all the use and abuse, consider yourself lucky if your former group mates even nod in your direction when you pass by them on campus. It’s a bittersweet goodbye, but probably for the best since academic pressure doesn’t usually breed the healthiest relationships. Besides, do you really wanna be friends with any of these guys?

The “Dude, They Can’t Test Us on the Readings” Student They might not have been to any of the lectures, but they damn well think they’re the final authority on what material is testable and will absolutely let your study coven know. This student interprets the mandatory reading list as more of a suggestion for supplementary materials, and refuses to resort to skimming like the best of ‘em. With a tone

that’s a mix of bewilderment, indignation and sweatiness, they’ll make sure to gripe about the breadth of materials covered in class and how they managed to get a C without even cracking open a book last semester — like that’s supposed to impress you. He only ever shows up to your study sessions to complain about the professor’s unfair grading policies. The jury’s still out on how they even got into your study group in the first place, but it’s probably because they’re friends with that annoying girl who lives on your floor and they promised to write outlines for potential essay questions.

The Guy That Tries Way Too Hard to Make Friends He’s taken painfully descriptive lecture notes on his iPad mini, summarized every reading, and been to every single one of the professor’s office hours. But this student makes damn sure that he conceals the depth of his work, and only speaks up rarely as an authority on the course. It’s when they start messaging your study GroupMe four weeks out from the final exam with possible strategies and ways to divide up the material that you see beyond the iceberg’s tip. This guy will read way too much into your excitement about actually passing the class, interpreting your 3 a.m. “You’re literally a lifesaver!” texts into invitation for friendship — or maybe even something more. When all the outlines have been burned through, they hint at some further plans for a midnight snack run, and start inviting you to pre-games and parties that their pre-med fraternity is hosting. It’s hard to pull off the Band-Aid, but you’ve got to. He’s looking for friends. You’re just part of the pack of hungry dogs looking to copy down lecture notes.

The Snacker They might not have jack shit to add to the conversation about political

CA NA RY LU C

The five people you’ll meet in your study group realism, but they’ll sure as hell derail the entire group conversation with the smell of their baby back ribs. They never quite got over that exciting freshman-year revelation that you can order a sevencourse meal to the front steps of the library; they will abuse this privilege until they skid by at graduation. They’ll offer you a place on the order, but you know never to get roped into that disgusting delivery fee. If only you could delete the Grubhub app from their phone.

The Formatter This person always looks lost. Like you, they neither did the readings nor did they catch the lecture, but they’re wound tighter than your high school valedictorian. Not only do they assume dominion over the Google Doc study guide, but they’re the gatekeeper blocking suspected mooches from the group. Naturally, they don’t have much to add themselves, so they try to mask the fact that they’re dead weight with a lot of bolding and bulleting and other stuff that’s supposed to make it look like they really understand the study material. They’ll throw your shit into a Quizlet and act like a martyr when they share it with the group. The Drunk Give this one the task of copying basic info from the textbook, and they’ll actually manage to get it wrong. They’ll get to study-group business after pounding some Nattys or guzzling some Banker’s, turning in early at 1am to respond to your slew of angry group messages. This is the guy who will take pictures of his four pages of handwritten notes, in pencil for some reason, and send them to your study group at the crack of dawn before the exam — which is so helpful. At least this guy will probably only show up at the last group review session to save face. sacurrent.com /// COLLEGE GUIDE 2016-2017

No one is taking their trash out at three in the morning — that’s unheard of. If you’re still uneasy about the idea, just push one of the giant trash cans against the door for some extra assurance. No one will bother you. The beauty of a trash room is that it’s a goddamn trash room. That means once that door is shut, no one is gonna be peeping in on you while you get a little. Don’t worry about the smell either. Dorm hall trash rooms get cleaned out on a daily basis, which means it’s probably cleaner than your actual room. 42

The logistics of this one depend on the bathroom setup in your dorm. If you’re one of the lucky few with a private bathroom, then it’s simple—all you have to do is lock the door, turn on the shower and get down. A connecting bathroom is also pretty easy, so long as you establish a “tie on the door” type system with the suitemates. The real challenge is getting busy in a communal dorm bathroom. Shoot for a time when most people aren’t taking showers—meaning late night is probably your safest and

be applied to shield you from the prying eyes of your creepy, douche-nozzle roommate. This works easiest on a loft bed if you’re lucky enough to have one. All you need to do is hang blankets, sheets or rugs from the high end of the bed post on all sides, and like magic, you’ve vanished from your roommate’s vision. If you don’t have a loft or bunk bed, fear not. Try hanging blankets from chairs or pinning them on the wall with thumb tacks. Obviously, the fort won’t be sound-proof, but that can be solved with some loud music or Netflix—we recommend D’Angelo’s Y2K masterpiece Voodoo. Sure, it’ll be a little awkward with your roommate technically still in the room, but it beats celibacy any day of the week.

Find a Roof This one is definitely the most fun. Once you find the right spot, plan a route that will draw the least amount of attention as you venture to the top. Once you scale whatever building you’ve chosen for your sexy-time perch, find a spot that is either out of sight from the rooftop entrance or obstructed by some sort of structure—like an AC unit or a duct. That way, you can hear any visitors before they spot you and quickly re-clothe. If caught, just play stupid and say y’all were stargazing or something. After all, who could get mad at a couple of youngsters trying to appreciate the cosmos?

Back Seat of Grandma’s ‘78 Mercury

Alright, it doesn’t have to be grandma’s and it doesn’t have to be a ‘78 Mercury, but you get the point. Not everyone has a car to take to college, but if you do, more power to you. This will give you the easiest and most consistent backup location for doing the horizontal hula when your dorm room isn’t an option. If you don’t have a car, make some friends who do. Having access to a car is only half the battle, though. No one wants adult nap-time in a dorm parking garage. Find a spot with a nice view. Most importantly, crack a window or leave the car running. No one likes a stank sauna.

Cheap Motel Room

Sometimes you just have to buy privacy. If you decide to rent a motel room, don’t bother with something pricy for the sake of romance. Settle for less. In fact, look for a motel that falls on the seedy end of the spectrum—hell, it even makes the experience more adventurous. Be careful not to go too raunch (nobody wants bed bugs or crabs) but shoot for a tastefully shabby motel and be sure to take a diligent shower after everything’s said and done. The best part about renting a room is that you can finally be as loud as you want.

*Disclaimer: Just because I listed these spots for you doesn’t mean they’re always going to be the safest or most responsible locations. You’re adults now. Use your best judgment when looking for a place to get it on. Don’t put yourself in a situation where you’re frantically explaining yourself to a police officer while simultaneously trying to get all your clothes back on. Take these tips with a grain of salt, always keep your head on a swivel and, most importantly, have fun.

Dorm room recipes, supermarket smarts and other ways to keep from starving in college

Cooking Clever NICK JOYNER

Maximize Your Microwave and Coffeepot Being a freshman is alI about the art of making-do, of getting by, of realizing that the seductive brochure did its job and lied to you. The dining halls have awful hours, strange locations, and think that clams are fair game for cafeteria food. You need to get your money’s worth, but three trips to the salad bar becomes unpalatable after about two weeks. You’ll start to hate the lettuce and the crackers, notice the imperfections in the fruit, and wonder how the scrambled eggs got gray on the bottom. A meltdown is foreseeable, and you might resort to a coping period of eating out in order to feel human again. But this’ll only last about three days before your mom sends you a screenshot of your debit card activity and you walk of shame your ass back to heat lamps spotlighting frozen pizza, like a moth to a flame. You

need to learn your place and embrace the experience of balancing the paid-for options with the economical ones you can fix for yourself. Mac and Cheese in a Mug Sit down Easy-Mac, you’re on your way out. Why would I settle for your cheesepacket crustiness when I can have the real thing in a perfectly sized portion for after my late-afternoon cry? Just like its stovetop big mama, this recipe uses raw elbow noodles. How your prepare this twee little mug of pasta depends on the size of your container, but generally you want to use equal parts pasta and water (or milk if you’re feeling creamy). Generally, it looks like a half-cup of dry noodles to a half-cup of water, although some like to add a little more liquid out of caution, say a third of a cup, to really do the trick. After a few tries, you should be able to perfect the ratio so

that the noodles absorb all the available liquid and are cooked just enough, with no drainage or anything. To cook the pasta, microwave for two minutes, stir, and microwave again for two minutes. Putting a saucer under your mug is recommended to catch some of the overflow when the macaroni starts to boil. If there’s any excess liquid (hopefully not), pour it out. Add a few splashes (collegiate teaspoons) of milk if you’ve got it, and mix in finely shredded cheddar to your preference of cheesiness. Microwave again for a minute on high and you’ll be good to go. Salmon and Veggies in a Coffeemaker It’s about to get hella gourmet up in here, using nothing more than your crusty old coffeemaker. The people who got Keurigs and started gloating about their watery-ass coffee that comes from printer ink cartridges won’t have the last laugh

Rice-a-Roni seasoning to spice things up like a 20-year marriage. All you’ve gotta do is buy the broccoli cheddar flavor (or whatever flavor packet feels like it will fill that emptiness inside you) and toss out the accompanying rice mix, unless you’re down to eat some unflavored grain down the line. Microwave the ramen in a bowl of water for 3-4 minutes, stir, and add in two packets of the cheesy powder to pimp your noodles out. Stir well and let sit for a few minutes. Overnight Oatmeal Bring your own beautifully healthy picnic to Monday morning lecture and be the envy of you hungover peers. To make this mason jar treat (or Tupperware delight), simply mix equal parts of raw oats (Quaker’ll do), milk and Greek yogurt and mix them up. If you feel your inner Barefoot Contessa shining through, add some coconut shavings, berries, peanut butter or honey. If your receptacle has a cover, use it. If not, some plastic wrap will

do. Leave it in the fridge for eight hours or as long as you can manage to close your eyes, and the oats should be cute and fluffy when you grab them before sprinting to class.

Supermarket Smarts Once you’ve made the plunge and moved off campus and left the meal plan, you’ll really be smacked in the face with adulthood. Gone are the fun days of dormitory science experiments and trying to replicate Buzzfeed Tasty videos while having zero of the necessary appliances. You’ve reached that point in your life where the budgeting really kicks in. You need to face your fears for once in your life and stop deflecting blame like your therapist always says you do. So stick with us and our tips for survival and you’ll be living it up like a real Bear Grylls minus the camera crew feeding him burgers when he’s hungry. They might seem petty, but the dollars and cents can add up to a sexy sum of boxed wine cash. ADISA

now. After you’re done rinsing the crust out off your coffeepot, you’re ready to cook an entree and a side using only one appliance. To steam vegetables (I recommend broccoli or carrots but really anything steamable will do), add them to the coffee basket until they fill up roughly half the space. Add all the water that will fit into the coffeemaker’s reservoir and then turn on the machine and let the water run through, stopping about halfway through to turn over the vegetables before restarting the cycle. After the first cycle is done, add the salmon to the water in the pitcher with some soy sauce, teriyaki, or other seasoning of choice on the top of the filet. Add more water and run a second cycle to make sure that the vegetables are completely tender, and make sure the burner under the coffee carafe is on to warm the water while the salmon poaches. The vegetables should be done after the second cycle, while the salmon should take about eight minutes before it starts to get flaky. The fish may look a little different than it would had you grilled it, but it should be done. Dump out the water, remove the vegetables and your water-cooked filet, and escort yourself to Flavortown because this meal is done. Eggs in a Nest in the Microwave This one’s so cute and easy you’ll forget how excited you were when you learned you can actually make eggs in the microwave. Also (incorrectly) called a toad in the hole by some deviants, this dish only requires two ingredients: an egg and a piece of toast for it to roost in. Simply use a small knife or any cookie cutter-type instrument (the bottom of a cup will do marvelously) to cut a small circle out of the center of the piece of bread. Place the cut-out bread on a plate, crack an egg in the middle, and throw it in the microwave. Cook it on high for at least a minute, and then for 30 second intervals to preference, depending on your yolk tolerance. Add some salt and pepper on top, or cheese if you’re feeling frisky, and pop that sucker in your mouth. Broccoli Cheddar Ramen Tired of subsisting solely on the shrimp ramen left over from your roommate’s bulk order? Upgrade your Maruchan and make your jail cell of a dorm room smell like a damn Panera Bread. All it takes is a little

Plan What You Need It’s painfully obvious but it’ll save you from accidentally buying something you already have. Taking stock of your cupboards and the quantities of everything you have can help you start to shop smarter and will influence a lot of the other thrifty habits you can form.

Scavenge Through Your Pantry for Things about to Expire And just like that, this list of tips starts to build off of itself. Wow. When you make your shopping lists, look through your fridge and pantry to see not only what you need more of, but what you haven’t used. Most people throw away nearly a quarter of their groceries, so check on those ticking timebombs like produce, yogurt and bread. Whip them all out and MacGyver yourself a meal that would make your Meemaw proud.

Limit Shopping Trips And again! After trying out our first two tips you’ll start to see how fast your house goes through basics like milk, toilet paper and kelp gelatin. Once you’ve seen what kinda timeline you and your housemates are delaying with, you can start to limit your trips to a weekly basis, so that you can avoid waste and buying shit you know you’re just gonna let rot. Check Your for Receipt for Substitutes and Cheaper Prices at Other StoreS It might make you feel like a tightass, but diagnosing your destructive spending is one of the most helpful things you can do. You don’t need that much dragonfruit, and you should probably put back all of that zebra meat. Take a look at your last receipt and pinpoint what items you spend the most on. Do a quick search of some other stores nearby and see if their prices could treat you better. And when in doubt, go store brand.

Check Yourself Out In the same vein of consumer consciousness, checking yourself out at the grocery store makes you focus on exactly what you’re bagging up to take home, with every barcode draining your pocket before your very eyes. Studies show that self-checkout lanes are one of the best ways to limit impulse spending, since there’s no black box effect of a cashier in the way. Points Club Rewards I hate having too much shit in my wallet just as much as any avid skinny jeans-wearer, but signing up for frequent shopper programs can save your destitute ass. Places like Walgreens and H-E-B have point systems to get store credit to use on future trips. Swallow your pride and accept the plastic. Plus, a buncha places do it digitally now.

Student Bride

Getting married in college with no regrets Everyone dates in college. It’s fun — dates to parties, dinners, movies and someone to buy you a drink or two at the bar. It certainly has its perks but it can be difficult to balance a boyfriend and friends along with everything else you have going. Plus, your friends aren’t going to appreciate it when you ditch them for your new boyfriend or when they have to hear about how you broke up for the sixth time this month. When I met the man who is now my husband, I was a sophomore in college and marriage was nowhere on my mind. We lived in different cities (I lived in Lubbock and he lived in San Antonio), but an increasing amount of our time was spent together or traveling to see one another. Throughout the week, I balanced a full class load, studying, projects, friends, sorority requirements (like community service and meetings) and an internship, and on the weekends, I visited my boyfriend. One semester I scheduled all my classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and

KARLY MUELLER

Thursdays so I could spend Friday through Monday in San Antonio. As we grew more serious, my friends started seeing less and less of me. At least three out of four weekends a month, I would drive to San Antonio. Even though that meant a dramatic decrease in college activities, I didn’t mind because San Antonio was more fun than a college town, anyway. Our long-distance dating continued and the summer before my senior year of college my boyfriend got down on one knee and popped the question. I couldn’t have been any happier. I finally got to plan the wedding I’d been planning on Pinterest for years. When I went back to school in August, it was so fun to show everyone my ring and tell all my friends, classmates (and pretty much anyone who would listen) the story of the proposal. I didn’t think I was in for a huge shock since I was already so busy, but when I realized everything that went into planning not only a wedding but also a marriage … that’s when the stress hit me. I had a lot of juggling to do before

I got engaged, but that ring on my finger meant more sleepless nights, phone calls with rental companies, venues, church supervisors and caterers, not to mention a lot of decisions that needed to be made. About a month into the fall semester of my senior year I realized that things were about to change. My last semester on campus I didn’t go to a single football game, party, sorority formal or anything else that would typically be considered normal for a college senior. If you weren’t one of my roommates or in one of my classes I didn’t see you much, and unfortunately for my 4.0, I found myself researching photographers, videographers and reception venues instead of studying economics. Instead of wearing baggy T-shirts every day, I was in wedding dress fittings. I took the fines almost weekly instead of attending my sorority chapter meetings — I was either too busy or that was the first time all day I could hear myself think. I still graduated with an above-average GPA and I had three years to make friends who were happy for my engagement and who understood why I was so busy. Before my husband and I started dating, I made plenty of memories at sorority formals and all the other “normal” college experiences. (I know I can go back to a football game any time I’d like.) It’s safe to say that I have different memories of my senior year in college than most people but, for me, it’s exactly how I’d imagined it. For some people that might sound terrible. Being “tied down” so early in life? And that’s okay, too. Some college students just flat-out aren’t ready for a commitment like marriage. If you want to get out there and party it up for four (or more) years — go for it, it’s your time. But for others, like myself, that scene isn’t all that appealing. Where my story differs from a lot of girls who get engaged in college, I did not wait until graduation for the wedding. Thankfully, my last semester was fully online with just six hours of distance classes, so I didn’t have to be on campus. However, I’m not sure how much easier that made things. I had an assignment due the day of my wedding. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t do it. I just cut myself some slack that day since I had something more important to do. I also had to take a couple hours out of my honeymoon in France to listen to an online lecture. And the funny thing is, I don’t regret a single day of it. sacurrent.com /// COLLEGE GUIDE 2016-2017

▶The Stoner Decades of pop culture teaches us that the Stoner is a slob, food mooch and TV hog all rolled into one joint of a person. In reality, this is probably the most benign roommate archetype on this list. Usually, like animated stoner pioneer Shaggy Rogers, the stoner is known to have a king’s gold worth of munchies stashed in the secret mini fridge hidden behind their bed. But they’ll usually end up sharing a few Twinkies with you by the end of a Seth Rogan marathon — if all the snack treats weren’t eaten during the first 21 minutes of Pineapple Express, that is. But if the beyond-average weed consumption — dab creating, edibles baking, joint rolling — gets out of control, just tell your hash-stained roomie a 420 swap meet is going down on the opposite side of town. That should allow you an escape from the blunt smoke.

◀The Gym Rat You’ve heard

about these keratin shake fanatics on Gymtimidation ads, but they exist in real life and living with one could make your college experience — and eating habits — a living hell. Loving your bod is a beautiful thing, and being shamed for gorging on that deep-dish pepperoni pizza is downright wrong. Live with this guy/gal, and you won’t be able eat hamburgers for

breakfast anymore. They’ll never let you live down that one time you downed a can of frosting after a stressful test. The noisy blender will be constantly whipping up protein shakes at all times of the day and night. The upside is that the Gym Rat can’t fit the gym in the dorm room, so while they’re out working on their fitness, no one will see that whole tub of cookie dough disappear.

The Rock Star ▶

The fun wears off with this one as soon as the dorm’s destroyed like a hotel room in a Cameron Crowe movie. Who doesn’t love living with someone moodier than Kurt Cobain and more arrogant than Axl Rose? When they’re not forcing you to stroke their mega ego, Rock Star tries to hawk his or her (but most likely his) merch to your unsuspecting friends. As if band practice in a tiny room or apartment wasn’t bad enough.

Schedule Scheming How to build the perfect class schedule For almost every teenager, the idea of college is great for one specific word: freedom. Freedom from curfews and freedom to decide when you go to class. With prerequisite classes and athletic and language requirements to consider, the pressure of crafting the right class schedule can feel panic-inducing. Don’t worry. There are a few things to keep in mind so you don’t lose your mind while locking in your routine for the next semester. First and foremost, say goodbye to the standard 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. schedule from your high school days. Sure, there are those early-risers who can easily make those earlymorning classes. Yes, the idea of having afternoons off is great, but for the rest of us, late-start classes make life so much easier. Dragging yourself out of bed after a late night of reading or studying (or, let’s face it, partying) seems a lot easier in theory than in practice. With extracurriculars, social demands and the difficulty of college-level classes, trust us when we say 10 a.m. is definitely the new 8 a.m. So if early classes are pretty bad, that means night classes are pretty great, right? Well, that’s definitely up for debate. Late classes mean mornings off, and if students like one thing, it’s sleeping in. But that also blocks dinner plans, cuts into study time for other classes or other extracurricular activities. Night classes can be great for those who love to stay up late, but studying every night until 3 a.m. after late classes can get a little old. What you’ll ultimately learn after doing this a couple of times is that the perfect class schedule is all about being an expert at timing. Those who know how to properly play the system can fee up huge blocks of chill time with some excellent planning. For instance, get yourself a three-day weekend. Every weekend. Sound too good to be true? Just sign up for those incredible two-day-per-week classes that leave you with Mondays or Fridays off. And, if you’re a scheduling pro, you might even be able to line up a bunch of those coveted once-a-week seminar classes, leaving you days to yourself without class. The only drawback, of course, is the procrastination that creeps in when you’ve got a whole week to do you work. Even if you don’t succeed in scheduling in three- or four-day weekends, there’s still a lot you can do with a wellplanned break in the middle of the week. Maybe you really need the time between a couple of hard classes to keep up. And no matter what, remember to pencil in time for yourself.

App

Assist What you need on your phone to survive college life GRANT CARFER

If you’re a new college student, get used to juggling a bunch of new responsibilities parents, teachers and others probably used to take care of for you. You control your money and your time, and while that newfound freedom might be thrilling, you’ve also gotta figure out how to use it wisely. Good thing you’ve probably got a powerful little pocket-computer that can help you manage your new adult life. Here are a few apps that’ll help you along the way:

Level Money One of the biggest challenges that fresh high school grads entering their first year of college face is learning how to balance their budget — because, let’s face it, first-year college students aren’t the best with money management. This app looks at how much you’re spending each month and quickly tells you how much you can safely blow after your essential spending is accounted for. It also keeps track of your transactions and spending habits, predicting your balance for the next month so, like an actual adult, you can start planning things ahead of time.

Argus “Sun’s out, guns out,” right? With the new school season approaching, maybe you wanna look your absolute best (to impress people you don’t even know, which totally makes sense). Well, this app can help you develop healthier eating habits and exercise routines. Argus is a calorie counter, activity tracker and a pedometer for weight loss all in one app. You can scan barcodes on food items to keep track of your daily calorie count or program in your sleep cycle to figure out how much rest you should be-versus-are getting. The only downside is the price, which, depending on what bells and whistles you want, ranges from $5 to $40. ATracker “Time management” is one of those skills that sounds lame but is actually crucial to successfully balancing class, homework, social life, partying, and whatever else people do in college. With ATracker, you can set up your daily tasks and goals and input how much time you suspect you’ll need to complete them. The app gives you a number of ways to figure out exactly how you’re spending your time. Class Manager Yes, college is fun, but not so much fun that you’ll want to take longer than four years to complete your degree. And so to finish around the four-year mark, you’ll need to load up on classes — at least some semesters. There’s nothing bad about taking the maximum amount of hours for a semester, but only if you up your organization game. This app helps you manage each class, mapping out how much progress you need to make on a project or homework or paper that’s almost due. sacurrent.com /// COLLEGE GUIDE 2016-2017

Quizlet Maybe high school didn’t exactly give you the best study habits. Don’t worry, there are apps for that. Quizlet helps you create quizzes, flashcards, memory games and tests based on the material you input into it, making it a great study tool for language, history and science classes.

Scribd The most time-consuming part of good paperwriting can be finding and citing your sources. That’s where Scribd comes in. The app puts millions of books, audiobooks, documents, comics and even sheet music at your fingertips, making it an immensely powerful tool for research papers and writing classes.

Freedom This app allows you to minimize the amount of technological distraction that might be keeping you from finishing your schoolwork. Freedom, ironically enough, blocks websites and phone apps that may be keeping you from your work. You can customize the app to run only during certain windows of time. You can also preset block sessions and let the app give you an alert when it will start and stop blocking your stuff.

Do Some Club Auditing You’ll soon

hold weekly meetings that are open to prospective members. And do you know how they get new people to attend these meetings? They order enough pizza to put a baby elephant in a food coma. To take full advantage of this, all you need is a little coordinating. Not all student clubs have their meetings on the same day, so with a little research you can set up a week where you’re visiting a new organization for free food every night.

Pick a Religion, Any Religion

realize that there is a college club or organization lobbying for your membership everywhere you turn on campus. At first, the infinite number of information booths and obnoxiously enthusiastic ambassadors littering your walk to class are nothing more than a daily pain in the ass. Then you run out of food money and suddenly your outlook changes. Nearly all of these clubs

I get it. You’re still in your little post-high school agnosticism kick. That’s fine, but is it really worth starving over? There will be times when there isn’t a club willing to throw free pizza in your face, and that’s when you look for the on-campus church, temple or prayer center to pick up the slack. Regardless of your opinions on any particular religious institution, you can’t knock the faithful for their desire to feed sacurrent.com /// COLLEGE GUIDE 2016-2017

Donate Blood A wise man named Hank Hill once said that if you really want something, you’ve got to play through the pain. This should be your mantra when you’re getting close to the 24-hour mark of not eating and the only apparent source of free food on campus is the blood drive bus. Yeah, needles suck, but so does malnourishment. Visit Places at Closing Time One thing you might try is to stop by restaurants before closing time. Many restaurants will just throw away any food that won’t be as fresh the next day because we live in America. Sometimes these restaurants will get generous with late-night visitors. We’re guessing that if you can move past the crippling shame of asking another adult for free food as he or she finishes up a grueling 13-hour shift at Bill Miller’s, then you probably deserve a handout or two. ▲Eating Contest Or, instead of begging or freeloading,

you can earn yourself some free food. And if the idea of chowing down on as much free food as your body can physically tolerate wasn’t good enough on its own, don’t forget that you’ll most likely be competing for a cash prize. Meaning you might actually end up with enough money to resume purchasing meals like a normal college student.
