No matter where we live or our background, Americans want fair elections, where we all have the freedom to vote and make our voices heard on important issues such as providing affordable health care, creating good jobs and ensuring quality education. For months, the American people have been calling for national standards to protect our freedom to vote, ensure fair representation and get big money out of politics, and the announcement of the Freedom to Vote Act is proof that our voices have power in the halls of the U.S. Senate. The Freedom to Vote Act is essential for fair redistricting: It bans partisan gerrymandering and helps ensure that all communities get the representation they deserve for the next 10 years and beyond. Importantly, it would also require every state’s map-drawers to hold public hearings, take input from voters, and explain how the maps they create are fair to both political parties and communities of color. Just as we rose up to vote in record numbers in the midst of the pandemic last year to demand new leadership, we now need to rise up to demand that our senators pass this bill that sets national standards for us to safely and freely cast our ballots, ensure every vote is counted and elect people who will deliver for us. ¶ Picking up the tab While the state takes aim at school quarantines, the fight over student mask requirements continues nearly a month and a half into the school year — with President Joe Biden’s administration ratcheting up its offense this week. The U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday that it has provided nearly $150,000 to the Alachua County School Board to cover a state penalty targeting board members’ salaries. The state has withheld two months’ worth of pay for the four Alachua board members who voted for a mask requirement “so far,” according to a statement from the school district. “We should be thanking districts for using proven strategies that will keep schools open and safe, not punishing them,” U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a prepared statement. And with the federal government’s backing, Alachua school officials are poised to keep the mask requirement in place despite the state’s revised rule on face coverings for students. “At this point, we are maintaining our current protocols,” district spokeswoman Jackie Johnson told the News Service of Florida. —RD

Florida’s new surgeon general comes out swinging, claiming that masks cause ‘demonstrable and considerable’ harm to children BY RYAN DAILEY, NSF

he unrelenting rumbling over coronavirus mitigation measures in schools until this week has centered on student mask requirements. But the fight may soon be waged in a new arena, with a new key player in the state’s corner. Gov. Ron DeSantis has named physician and researcher Joseph Ladapo as the state’s new surgeon general. Ladapo’s debut in Florida showcased his strong allegiance to DeSantis’ policies. During his introductory press conference, the doctor called for being “done with fear” amid the COVID-19 pandemic that has killed more than 51,000 of the state’s residents. And on his second day on the job, Ladapo signed off on a plan that adds decisions about COVID-19 quarantines to the list of education issues the DeSantis administration wants families — not schools — to control. The Florida Department of Health issued a revised rule last week that gives parents more authority to decide whether children should stay at home after being exposed to people who have COVID-19. The revamped rule says schools “shall allow parents or legal guardians the authority to choose how their child receives education after having direct contact with an individual that is positive for COVID-19.” The Aug. 6 version of the rule said students who have

contact with people positive for COVID-19 “should not attend school, school-sponsored activities, or be on school property” until they receive negative COVID-19 tests four days after the last exposure or are asymptomatic and wait seven days after their last exposure. “There’s not a single high-quality study that shows that any child has ever benefited from forced quarantining policies, but we have seen demonstrable and considerable harm to children. It’s important to respect the rights of parents,” Ladapo argued in a statement released by the governor’s office. The health department’s revised rule also tightened the state’s directive to districts about masks in schools. The revised rule says that opting out of mask requirements is “at the parent or legal guardian’s sole discretion.” The Democratic National Committee quickly blasted DeSantis’ choice of Ladapo, painting the new secretary of the Florida Department of Health as a threat to coronavirus mitigation measures in the state. “Instead of going with a trusted advocate for science, DeSantis is once again playing games with peoples’ lives by appointing someone who has trafficked antivaccine and anti-mask rhetoric,” Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Adonna Biel said in a statement. news@orlandoweekly.com

The once-a-decade redistricting process kicked off in the Capitol last week. In addition to redrawing 40 state Senate and 120 state House districts, lawmakers also will map out 28 congressional districts, including an additional seat that Florida picked up because of its growing population. Senate Reapportionment Chairman Ray Rodrigues, R-Estero, says he wants the Florida Legislature to avoid the “shadow process” that occurred in 2012 when lawmakers drew new political district lines that were rejected by the Florida Supreme Court. Last Wednesday, the House and Senate announced the launch of a joint redistricting website that will allow Floridians to craft and submit proposals for new districts. The new website — floridaredistricting.gov — is expected to allow people to draw proposed districts down to census-block levels. However, the process this go-round might not include public hearings that were held across the state a decade ago, in part because of a delay in the release of necessary census data due to the COVID-19 pandemic. —RD

¶ Feathers fly Sen. Jeff Brandes wants a new state bird. The St. Petersburg Republican filed a proposal for the 2022 legislative session that would rescind the designation of the mockingbird as the state bird, a perch it has held since 1927. In tweets Thursday and Friday defending his proposal, Brandes said the state should have a bird that people identify as being from Florida. “I should mention that the mockingbird is also the state bird of 4 other states,” Brandes tweeted (ha). “The mockingbird apparently had a very good lobbyist.” Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas also claim the mockingbird as their state bird. On the Department of State website, the mockingbird, or Mimus polyglottos, is described as a “year-round Florida resident,” that is “helpful to humans because it usually feeds on insects and weed seeds” and is “known for its fierce defense of the family nest.” The bird is also described as a “superb songbird” and mimic. “Its own song has a pleasant lilting sound and is, at times, both varied and repetitive,” the website says. “Often, the mockingbird sings all night long, especially under bright springtime moonlight.” Brandes’ proposal does not suggest a replacement bird. Florida has a range of state symbols, including a stone, Agatized Coral; a beverage, orange juice; an animal, the Florida panther; a marine mammal, the manatee; and a reptile, the American alligator. —RD

don’t require sticking your head into the pumpkin-spice jar at a Starbucks. (But if that’s your jam, go for it. We’ve got nothing against nutmeg.) Oktoberfests, corn mazes and pumpkin patches aplenty will give you a much needed-seasonal jolt. And speaking of jolts, it’ll be Halloween before you know it and if spooks and scares appeal to you, you’re in the thick of it here in the land of the Skunk Ape. Local theme parks are going all out with Halloween Horror Nights and Howl-O-Scream; drive-through haunts have made a welcome return, and there are plenty of local frights to get the adrenaline pumping. As we head from summer to not-so-summer, there’s plenty to do and see, so enjoy it mindfully. True, you can enjoy unlimited samples from Florida breweries. But if you’re only coming to Orlando Beer Fest for the beer, you’re missing out on half the fun. After a few (dozen) samples, you’ll be ready to hit up the food truck pod, where there’s something for every taste. Autumn Saturdays, of course, mean college football, and we won’t leave sports fans stranded: There’ll be a big inflatable screen showing the day’s matchups. VIP guests get to enter at noon, two hours ahead of general admission, but we suggest getting there early even if you have a GA ticket; the line wraps around the corner every year. Director Paul Castaneda on his new production of Nine, the story of a person forced to confront the emotional carnage they’ve caused

A titan of the arts at the peak of

their power is unexpectedly called to task by the numerous women they’ve damaged over the decades, and is finally forced to confront the emotional carnage they caused during the course of their career. It’s a story we’ve heard often these past few years, not only in the national news as the #MeToo movement made its impact on Hollywood and Broadway, but in our local community. And starting this Friday, you can experience Fellini’s take on this tale, as filtered through the songs of Maury Yeston, in Central Florida Vocal Arts’ staging of Nine: The Musical at the Lowndes Shakespeare Center (Oct. 1-10). I recently saw a preview of the new production from director Paul Castaneda, who helmed the 2018 Fringe hit El Wiz and is co-founder of Colors y Colores Collaborative (previously Greater Orlando Actors Theatre) with Dennis Neal. “Nine has always been kind of a bucketlist show for me,” says Castaneda, adding that he was already very familiar with both the original 1982 Broadway version and the 2003 revival before being approached by CFVA producer Theresa Smith-Levin — whom he’s known since the long-past days of Theatre Downtown and GOAT’s Cherry Street venue — and settling on this musical version of the surrealist 1963 film 8 ½. “Vocally it’s a challenging show, which is in [CFVA’s] wheelhouse; and for me, storytelling and dramatically, it’s a story that I wanted to tell,” Castaneda says.

“The reason that I still wanted to tell the story is because I thought there was an opportunity to address … the perceived power that he has over these women — emotionally, psychologically, even in terms of employment — but ultimately how they reclaim their power; how they come to the realization of who and what he is, and reclaim their power.” Telling that story effectively, especially in the current climate, requires a first-rate cast, and Castaneda says he was “blessed to be able to cast some really strong performers,” starting with star Freddy Ruiz (El Wiz, In the Heights) as deeply flawed film director Guido Contini, following in the Italian loafers of Raul Julia, Antonio Banderas and Daniel Day-Lewis. More importantly, the women from Contini’s past, who reappear as he’s struggling to shoot a scriptless film and save his faltering marriage, are played by a who’s-who of Orlando’s top actresses, including Erin Brenna Jackson, Kari Ringer, Natalie Doliner and Leesa Castaneda. This production was originally intended to open 18 months ago, before COVID closed them down in the middle of rehearsals. All members of the cast are vaccinated (except for the child playing Young Guido) and, in deference to the virus, Castaneda isn’t incorporating any of his usual closeup interactions with the audience, per Actors’ Equity restrictions. In addition, audience members must wear masks and show proof of vaccination or a recent negative PCR test to enter the Lowndes starting Friday, Oct. 1. “We all hold our breath every day as performers when we look at the news for the day, because we’re all like one bad outbreak from everything going in a different direction,” Castaneda says. “I

feel like I’m in a race, trying to get to the finish line of getting this production open to the public.” Given the topic Nine addresses, I can’t avoid bringing up the bovine in the room: Mad Cow Theatre. Castaneda and his wife, Leesa, have been vocal in their opposition to Mad Cow receiving taxpayer funding, given their longstanding financial and equity issues (Live Active Cultures, Aug. 11), joining with scores of other area artists in an unprecedented volume of adverse comments at recent grant panel meetings. In a surprise move, state adjudicators denied Mad Cow’s $90,000 request after listening to Castaneda’s and other artists’ objections. At a subsequent and equally contentious Orange County meeting, Mad Cow’s newly hired artistic director, Dr. Julius John, declared, “I have no earthly idea what any of this discourse is about … let’s move on and stop looking backwards” — despite having claimed the week prior during the state meeting that he was “shocked” and “appalled” by the accusations and promising to help the company make “drastic change.” Castaneda, along with countless others, doesn’t seem interested in “moving on” without genuine accountability. His final words on the show he’s directing have resonance far beyond the footlights: “These [abuses] have happened, but that’s not the game we’re playing anymore. You don’t have to be under those structures; you are fully empowered to own your life, all your decisions, and change the color of the paper. [It’s about] the repercussions of your actions. Maguro Sushi fuses Puerto Rican flavors into Japanese dishes with clarity and focus BY FAIYAZ KARA

here’s no denying the influence José Mendín has had on Miami’s restaurant scene. Of all the concepts the Puerto Rican chef-restaurateur has been tied to, Pubbelly Sushi, with its menu fusing Japanese and Latin flavors with French technique, is arguably his most well-known. The restaurant garnered Mendín five James Beard Award noms, and a decade on, Pubbelly’s reach and influence has spread all across South Florida. After dining at Maguro Sushi near the Florida Mall, it seemed Mendín’s influence has spread even farther. Maguro is run by Jose Joubert Torres, who sliced and diced at Shari Sushi for two years before its closure in 2019. Torres started Maguro as a delivery-only concept out of the Dollins Virtual Food Hall and, this past July, went brick-and-mortar. But its roots are in Puerto Rico. Torres had just opened Masago Sushi in Puerto Rico before Hurricane Maria devastated the island. He was forced to shut it down. A certain papertowel-tossing tosser didn’t do much to help the good residents of the island, so Torres made his way to Orlando, where he honed his skills at Shari. And skills he’s got. There’s a sophistication to his creations

and flavor combinations — if you happen to be roll-averse, Torres could sway you otherwise. Shrimp tempura and sweet plantain are a magic pairing in the “pa’ bravo yo” ($13.50), a striking roll crested with a slick of cilantro aioli. It’s named after a popular salsa song, but given the inclusion of sweet plantain, “maduro” roll would work too. Hell, Maduro Sushi could work as a name for the restaurant, but there’s plenty of the namesake maguro (tuna) to go around too. I assume his “bori” bowl ($17) refers to “Boricua” and “donburi,” but it’s an attractive assemblage nonetheless, with ruby cubes of tuna, avocado, sweet plantains and crispy shallots laid over zingy sushi rice. The space itself is quite fetching, with its soothing tropical-Zen motif contrasted by an eclectic Drake-to-Sade soundtrack. We started from the bottom of that rice bowl, and now we’re here — sitting in front of chicken thigh ($4.25) and chicken oyster ($4.25) yakitori, and lobster gyoza ($10). Both made solid openers, and both are ideal for sharing. The gyoza, resembling

plump pan-fried scallops flecked with black and white sesame seeds, were darned near perfect bites. The yakitori was nice, but it wasn’t quite at the level of say, Tori Tori or Susuru. The meats didn’t appear to be grilled over binchotan coals (which preserve the juiciness and flavor of the meats), nor did they have that sheen produced by a tare glaze. No biggie; we were more curious about the Latin-Asian dishes anyway. There wasn’t a riff on Mendín’s mofongo ramen, but the trio of meaty ribs ($10) were an exercise in Koribbean cuisine courtesy of a saucy glaze fashioned from kimchi and guava. The “mere pescao” ($18), a sushi roll with hamachi, crispy garlic and scallions enveloped by avocado and topped with a chimichurri sauce, was a roll I’d eat again and again. We were hoping to try some of the items incorporating ropa vieja, like the bao ($11) or the egg rolls (5.50), but they were out on both our visits. Desserts look deceptively benign, but a bite of the fried chocolate cheesecake ($8) was like swallowing a balloon — an indulgent, cracker-crusted, chocolate-filled balloon. Personally, I could take or leave bread puddings, but I’d take the guava bread pudding ($10), served with dulce de leche and wonton crisps, any day. I like it, and I like what Torres is doing. After suffering through disasters, displacement and a pandemic, Torres is slowly bringing his vision into focus. When he does, I imagine it’ll be a real sight. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

(Disney+) Maid — Margaret Qualley plays a single mom who finds work as a housecleaner in a limited series that’ll remind you how much you liked those unemployment benefits. There is definitely something in the water around here lately, and it’s conjuring the once-global spirit of Orlando’s dance music past.

LOCAL RELEASES Although new, Melo-dii is an intriguing Orlando character whose string of releases are a throwback to the 1990s rave scene — a time, incidentally, when Orlando was a prime-time, world-class player and an era that’s currently seeing a pronounced resurgence around here (read on for proof ). This virtual act is definitely kin to Gorillaz, in concept at least. Musically and graphically created by an Orlando artist who prefers to remain wholly and anonymously behind this persona, Melo-dii is an intergalactic manga-style pixie whose music started out low-key enough with an astral three-song EP (Starship Tunes) earlier this spring. But the six singles that’ve followed so far have established a pulse that rides like a jungle chillout room, merging floating downtempo moods with drum-and-bass kicks. Steeped in U.K. breakbeat vibes, her latest releases (this month’s “Stretched Outward” and July’s “Interspace”) are like lost vignettes straight out of a classic rave archive. The songs are pop-sized bites of dance revivalism nicely conceived with a smart little avatar. Look for Melo-dii on Bandcamp. The rave train just keeps on, ahem, rolling this week with Astro Pup, another act that features some eye-catching, DIY visual art. This side project of Winter Garden artist Elliott, who records and performs primarily under the moniker Gojii, is another quarantine baby. An avowed young rave disciple, Elliott has used Astro

Pup to chase that muse out to its extremities. Astro Pup’s latest release, Killshot, packs their hardest tracks to date. Launched from the unequivocally hard-core end of the dance spectrum, this EP is a three-song salvo of frenetic, unrelenting stompers that are overdriven to a fried techno grind. Killshot is up on both Bandcamp and Soundcloud.

MUSIC EVENTS THIS WEEK The dance-music time warp that’s opened up lately in our city will be blown wide open in the clubs this week. FSOB’s Origin: OK, so the Carl Cox show on Friday night over at the legendary old Firestone is sold out. Don’t sweat, beat nuts, because old-school Orlando promoter Future Sound of Breaks is throwing an even more stacked blowout the next night over at the old and equally hallowed Edge grounds. For this latest bass parade, FSOB swings for the fences with a lineup of legends doing exclusive breaks sets, including Josh

Wink’s first Orlando appearance in over 25 years, West Coast titan DJ Dan, Texas’ Kelly Reverb, NOLA’s DJ Voodoo and NYC’s Frankie Bones. Maxing out the bill will be our own homegrown star DJs like Andy Hughes, Stylus, Robby Clark, Chang, Knightlife, Davie-D and Eric Berretta. For breaks heads, this is a dream-team lineup here. On a side note, here’s a personal recollection of DJ Dan: I actually opened for him back in the ’90s when he headlined a major party in downtown Nashville. He was new royalty on the national rave circuit then and I was the only DJ I knew of in that region who was spinning his Electroliners record “Loose Caboose.” At the time, it was my go-to track to drop when I wanted to send the club into the stratosphere. Well, DJ Dan watched my entire set from the side of the stage and complimented me when we changed guards at the turntables. He was probably just being collegial, but whatever. Hearing that from a hero gave a very young me an unforgettable fanboy moment. So thanks, Dan. Welcome to Orlando, and bring the house down like you did that night in Nashville. “FIGURATIVELY PISSED” I’m worried this may be above your pay grade. LOL. My boyfriend and I have been together for nearly five years. When we first got together, he shared a fetish with me, which has honestly gotten out of hand. I’m not close-minded and I genuinely love pleasing people, and my approach to sex has always been, “Whatever turns you on, turns me on!” But his fetish has crossed the line from kink to obsession. Unrelenting Requirements Inducing Nervous Exhaustion You don’t wanna break up your family over this, URINE, but I sure do. To be perfectly frank, I’d like to break up your boyfriend’s skull over this — figuratively speaking. I’m not advocating violence. It’s just that … after reading your letter … I wanna figuratively slap your boyfriend upside the head so hard his figurative skull breaks into a thousand figurative pieces. And while I don’t think your question is above my pay grade — what you need to do seems obvious to me and will, no doubt, be obvious to everyone who reads your letter — I nevertheless called in a couple of experts. Dr. Ian Fields is a urogynecologist who specializes in pelvic floor disorders and bladder conditions. I shared your letter with him to get his expert opinion on the risks you’re taking with your physical health, URINE, but before Dr. Fields would address the health risks you’ve being bullied into running, he wanted to address the

elephant in the bathroom and the bedroom and the delivery room. “Let’s call this behavior what it is: abuse,” said Dr. Fields. “This woman needs to get out of this controlling and abusive relationship.” I am in complete agreement with Dr. Fields, URINE: you’re not indulging a kinky boyfriend, you’re being terrorized (your own words) by an abusive boyfriend. Leave him. “In terms of health risks, there are many,” Dr. Fields continued. “Keeping large amounts of urine in your bladder is a set-up for recurrent urinary tract infections. These infections can track upward to the kidneys in some cases and cause an infection in the kidney called pyelonephritis. Recurrent bouts of pyelonephritis can lead to permanent kidney damage. And you don’t want to lose your kidneys — once they lose function, it doesn’t return.” Destroying your kidneys isn’t the only health risk you’re running, URINE: “Keeping large amounts of urine in the bladder can lead to a bladder stretch injury and may lead to long-standing urinary retention — or the inability to empty the bladder — which may or may not recover over time,” said Dr. Fields. “The bladder is a pretty hearty muscle and can recover from many insults but repeated damaged like this could do irreparable harm. In addition, these insults could lead to overactive bladder and with time, to urgency urinary incontinence, that is, leakage that you cannot control when you get the urge to go to the bathroom.” So, URINE, the health risks you’re running to avoid your boyfriend’s anger cannot be described as insignificant. Now let’s talk about the emotional and psychological damage your boyfriend has already inflicted on you. “If this woman came to me for individual therapy, I would be compelled to point out to her that her boyfriend is physically and emotionally abusing her,” said therapist Marissa Myers, LCP. “Getting ‘uncomfortably angry’ and ‘throwing a fit of epic proportions’ are examples of manipulative behaviors abusers use to make sure their victims know who’s in charge. The disregard this man has for her physical health and safety raises the bar to physical abuse in my opinion.” Myers frequently works with individuals and couples to help them resolve conflicts around sex and intimacy, URINE, but she would not work with you — alone or as a couple — with the goal of saving this relationship. “Working with this reader on how to compromise or communicate better regarding this issue would amount to facilitating the continuation of an abusive relationship,” said Myers. “My advice to her is to begin gathering resources, telling safe people, and planning a safe exit. Once she’s safely out of the relationship, therapy can help her avoid getting into another abusive relationship.” Which is not to say this is your fault, URINE. Your boyfriend manipulated you with his anger and leveraged your own desire to be a good partner against you. And while it’s fine to fantasize about watching your partner pee every time she pees, it’s unrealistic and unfair and unworkable to demand that your partner allow you to

watch them every single time they take a piss. There’s nothing LOL about any of this, URINE, and I know this isn’t what you wanted to hear. Yours is one of those letters that makes me wish I had a time machine so I could take you back to the start of this relationship — five years and one kid ago, back when your boyfriend first began terrorizing you — and implore you to leave him before things escalated to this point. And while I’m sure you love your kid and don’t regret having that baby, URINE, you can’t let your desire to keep your child’s home intact prevent you from escaping the hell your boyfriend has made of your life. Take Myers’ advice: Make a plan, lean on supportive friends, take your kid, and get away from this man before your kidneys explode. I’m a happily married (mostly) lesbian woman. I am somewhat attracted to men, but only in the context of a threesome with my wife.
