Ranked choice voting for fair elections The political conditions and importance of Seminole County have changed drastically in the last several years, and an improved voting system that elects candidates most preferred by the people is needed. Had there been ranked choice voting (RCV), the following scenarios wouldn’t occur. In 2018, Katrina Shadix was running for Seminole County commissioner. In her race, she lost, receiving 48.54% of the vote to Commissioner Zembower’s 48.75%, while a third-party candidate received 2.71% of the vote. With RCV, at least 50% of the votes are needed to win and if a candidate has less than 50% of the vote, the lowest vote-getter has their votes distributed to the voters’ second choice. This would’ve been the solution to the spoiler effect in 2018. In the upcoming 2020 Seminole County tax collector race, Lynn “Moira” Dictor is set to campaign against J.R. Kroll. Briefly, Daniel Day, an independent candidate with ties to former Tax Collector Joel Greenberg, filed to run as “Dani Mora Day.” Although he dropped out, this could’ve caused confused for voters who weren’t sure who the real “Mo(i)ra” was. RCV provides the voter the opportunity to cast their vote for either one as a second choice without fear of their vote being wasted. There’s a nonpartisan and not-for-profit organization that’s working toward giving voters a voice, called Rank My Vote Florida

(rankmyvoteflorida.org). They’re working on bringing ranked choice voting to Florida, and I support this work in the fight for fair elections and I encourage others to join the fight. – Rob Martin, Deltona

LGBTQ+ blood donors Re: “Orlando Congresswoman Val Demings introduces bill to allow LGBTQ+ people to donate blood,” Sept. 8: Shortly before the creation of the blood-donation policy that Rep. Demings now seeks to overturn, several infants who received transfusions at the hospital at the University of Florida contracted HIV from those transfusions. My baby was hospitalized there at that time. And, during that time, me and other mothers often expressed our fears – to each other and to our babies’ doctors – about the danger of our babies contracting HIV from transfusions. The doctors told us that the chances of our children becoming thus infected was small, but we did not feel assured. And a few years later, it was discovered that some of those babies, hospitalized at that time at UF, were infected with HIV in the way that we mothers had all along feared – from transfusions. Your news article mentions placing what you describe as bad policies into what you refer to as “the dustbin of history.” Meanwhile, the children who contracted HIV through blood transfusions – prior to the blood-donation policy that Rep. Demings seeks to overturn – have lived, and died, with those HIV infections. – Susan Washington, Orlando

IS THIS FASCISM?

What else do you call something that rejects democracy, scapegoats immigrants, and is consumed by grievance? Part Two of a two-part series BY JE FFREY C. BIL L M A N

There’s a plausible argument

that the first recognizably proto-fascist campaign appeared in the southern United States in the late 1860s with the Reconstruction-era Ku Klux Klan: whiterobed men, in league with conservative elites, using extrajudicial violence to enforce their vision of racial purity. Scholars are more likely to look for fascism’s protean DNA in the fin de siécle movement of 1880s France, a rejection of materialism and liberal democracy rooted in Social Darwinism and racialism; or perhaps the populist nationalism of the French general Georges Boulanger, who, had he not lost his nerve, might have overthrown the Third Republic in 1889. Fascism officially arrived a generation later, in Milan on March 23, 1919, when Benito Mussolini formed the Fasci Italiani di Combattimento. But Italian fascism was qualitatively different than the national socialism that captured Germany in 1933,

as well as the myriad fascist variants that arose throughout Europe in the interregnum between world wars. Fascists shared a seething hatred for socialism, liberalism and bourgeois individualism. They believed in authoritarian leadership and the right of the strong to subjugate the weak. They believed in the primacy of the state over the rights of the individual. They believed their collective grievance justified violence. What they didn’t share was a cogent intellectual grounding. Fascism wasn’t conceived in an Age of Reason but in an Age of Emotion – in the aftermath of a Great War that had ruined empires and shattered Europe, that saw globalized markets devastate agriculture and manufacturing, that remade homogenous nations through immigration. As the historian Robert O. Paxton wrote in 2004’s The Anatomy of Fascism, many of fascism’s tenets “belong more to the realm

of visceral feelings than to the realm of reasoned propositions.” Indeed, two months after Adolf Hitler assumed the chancellorship, the German novelist Thomas Mann keenly observed that he had witnessed a revolution “without underlying ideas, against ideas.” Herein lies our dilemma. To answer the question posed in my previous column – whether Donald Trump is a fascist – we first need to settle on what fascism actually is. That’s not as easy as you’d think. Yale philosopher Jason Stanley defines fascism as the “cult of the leader who promises national restoration in the face of humiliation brought on by supposed communists, Marxists, and minorities and immigrants who are supposedly posing a threat to the character and the history of a nation.” Eliah Bures, a historian of modern Europe, thinks that’s too expansive. As he wrote in Foreign Policy last year, “Real fascism is revolutionary and dictatorial, practicing a purifying brutality in furtherance of utopian goals.” Argentinean historian Federico Finchelstein, meanwhile, believes the right-wing populism practiced by Trump and other modern autocrats is an “authoritarian form of democracy” that evolved from fascism – postfascism, in other words. In The Anatomy of Fascism, Paxton offered this exhaustive definition: “a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation, or victimhood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy, and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion.” Without question, Trump has surrounded himself with white nationalists and fashioned a political career from white victimhood. He has supported violence – state-sponsored and otherwise – against antagonistic protesters. He has promulgated dangerous conspiracy theories. He has eroded the rule of law to benefit friends and punish adversaries. He has attacked voting rights. He has inspired German neo-Nazis. He has clung to power through alliances with complicit conservative elites. But he has not (yet) pursued internal cleansing or external expansion (unless you count his obsession with Greenland). And the only goal his brutality has furthered is self-aggrandizement. So, strictly speaking, Donald Trump is not a fascist, at least not by these terms. orlandoweekly.com

However, as Paxton pointed out, if you look to the feelings that underlie fascism – the sense of grievance, the pull of authoritarianism, the distrust of democracy, the scapegoating – you can spot it within every democracy, always seeking a toehold. “We know from tracing its path that fascism does not require a march on some capital to take root,” he warned. “Seemingly anodyne decisions to tolerate lawless treatment of national enemies is enough.” Let’s consider some not-slightly-anodyne things we’ve come to tolerate as, if not normal, then unavoidable aspects of the Trumpian landscape. Right now, we have desperate Senate Republicans and a corrupted Department of Justice cooking up October surprises – the former using documents laundered by a Russian agent to discredit Trump’s impeachment, the latter under pressure from the attorney general to discredit the Mueller probe. We have right-wing judges suppressing voting rights in Florida and Wisconsin with decisions that can be described, at best, as specious. We have an administration using the pretense of a pandemic to expel nearly 9,000 unaccompanied migrant children. We have armed crackpots setting up checkpoints in Oregon because they think antifa is lighting forest fires. We have the top communications official at the Department of Health and Human Services – the same one who tried to alter Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports to suit Trump’s everything-is-fine COVID messaging – publicly alleging that CDC scientists “do not want America to get well, not until after Joe Biden is president,” and that left-wing “hit squads [are] being trained all over the country” for a post-election insurrection, so Trump supporters should load up on guns. And we have a president who, despite consistently lagging in the polls, has told his followers that if he loses, the “election is rigged.” Seventy-five years after Mussolini met a firing squad and Hitler committed suicide, perhaps distinguishing between fascism and postfascism and fascism-adjacent authoritarianism is a pedantic exercise. After all, it’s unlikely the next threat to liberal democracy will look exactly like the last. But the emotional core on which fascism was built never vanished. And for the first time in modern American history, it has found a home in a mainstream political party. Appeals court rules Florida can bar felons from voting if they owe fees A federal appeals court ruled last Friday that the state of Florida can prevent ex-felons from voting if they owe court costs or other financial penalties, even if they are too poor to pay them. In a 200-page ruling, the court spelled out its 6-to-4 decision, overturning a lower court ruling that had blocked the law. That earlier ruling, written by U.S. District Court Judge Robert Hinkle, had called the Florida law an “unconstitutional pay-to-vote system.” Chief Judge William Pryor wrote for the majority on Friday that the law does not constitute a poll tax, but instead is meant to promote “full rehabilitation.” Common Cause Chair in Florida Liza McClenaghan issued a statement condemning the decision. “The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals decision issued today is anathema to our country’s values,” wrote McClenaghan. “Our republic is stronger when more people participate. The ability to vote should never be conditioned on economic circumstances. The ‘demos’ in democracy means all the people decide, not the moneyed people.” While the U.S. Supreme Court may well be the next stop, the Court had earlier in the year allowed Florida to continue barring felons from voting while the case was in the courts. That means it will almost certainly pertain to the November election, and is a setback for Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign. Florida voters decided in November 2018 to pass Amendment 4, which allowed convicted felons who completed “all terms of sentence” to be able to vote. Passed with nearly 65% of the vote, the amendment did not specifically refer to court costs and fees. After it passed, Republican lawmakers passed a bill signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis that clarified ”all terms of sentence” must be satisfied for voting eligibility, including any fines, fees and restitution. – Dave Plotkin

DeSantis backs keeping permanent ‘alcohol to go’ in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said last week he wants to make permanent a change that has allowed restaurants to sell carryout alcoholic beverages during the coronavirus pandemic. DeSantis included what he calls “alcohol to go” in a March executive order to help provide a source of revenue for restaurants, which have been forced to scale back

their operations during the pandemic. During a meeting in Fort Myers with restaurant operators, DeSantis said he will keep the policy so long as the order remains in place, but the Legislature would have to change state law to allow it permanently. “I do think that it’s been successful, and I would encourage the Legislature to just make that permanent, because I think that you guys need all the help you can get, and I think it would make a lot of sense,” DeSantis told the restaurant operators. “So I’m for it being permanent. And I think that you’ll probably get a pretty good reception in the Legislature, just based on the experience and just based off everyone having to go through what you guys have gone through.” –News Service of Florida

Former candidate for governor Andrew Gillum says he is bisexual Former Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum said in a television interview aired Monday that he is bisexual, as he continues to re-enter the public spotlight after a March incident in which he was found intoxicated in a Miami Beach hotel room. Gillum said on the Tamron Hall Show that he doesn’t “identify as gay, but I do identify as bisexual. And that is something that I have never shared publicly before.” The statement came after a tumultuous six-month period for Gillum, a former Tallahassee mayor who narrowly lost the 2018 gubernatorial race to Republican Ron DeSantis and had been widely viewed as a rising star in the Democratic Party. He would have been the state’s first Black governor if elected. In a March 12 incident, Gillum was found inebriated in a South Beach hotel room where suspected crystal meth was discovered and another man had reportedly overdosed, according to police. Gillum announced after the incident that he was going to a rehabilitation facility for alcohol abuse. Gillum emerged from political exile in July with an 11-minute video posted on social media that addressed depression and alcoholism. Gillum spoke in the video about the impact of losing the governor’s race, which was decided by fewer than 33,000 votes. “I had totally underestimated the impact that losing the race for governor had had on my life, and on the way that those impacts started to show up in every aspect of my life,” said Gillum, who has long been married to his wife, R. Airbnb cracks down on ‘party houses’ in Orange County and statewide Embattled rental app Airbnb is set to begin a crackdown on “party houses” throughout Florida effective immediately, with Orange County and Lake County properties among the trouble spots targeted. Amid news stories of COVID ragers around the country over the summer, Airbnb instituted an indefinite, worldwide party and event ban, and attendance caps at rentals starting in late August. This newest crackdown targets specific listings around the country that have proven problematic for the company, with 40 rentals in Florida alone getting suspended from the Airbnb platform. The properties in question were scattered across Florida, in Alachua, Broward, Duval, Lake, Lee, Manatee, Miami-Dade, Okaloosa, Orange, Palm Beach, St. Johns and Walton counties. In addition, younger renters are going to be subject to increased scrutiny going forward, and prospective renters under the age of 25 with fewer than three positive Airbnb reviews won’t be allowed to book homes in the immediate vicinity of where they live. Airbnb has taken some severe blows due to the coronavirus pandemic’s huge effects on tourism and travel, and the company has lost approximately $1 billion since the pandemic began. – Matthew Moyer

Behind the mask Ben Van Beusekom’s ‘Bombshell: Masquerading Warfare’ exhibit is more timely than ever BY MATTTHEW MOYER

B

ombshell. It’s a word that brings to mind the glittering, larger-than-life stars of classic Hollywood, before conjuring images of trench warfare, chemical warfare, drone strikes. Both sides of this American coin form the basis of the “couture gas masks” of local designer and artist Ben Van Beusekom’s Bombshell: Masquerading Warfare exhibit at downtown’s CityArts, running from Sept. 17 to Oct. 11, and part of this year’s Global Peace Film Festival. In Bombshell, standard military-grade gas masks are transformed into vibrant, ethereal, alien and – yes – forbidding visages. Crystals, feathers, leather, beads and myriad fabrics make the masks almost unrecognizable. Plague doctor, but make it fashion. Van Beusekom has been painstakingly working on this haunting and breathtaking collection of masks for over a decade, and Bombshell is their first public showing. The timing couldn’t be more apropos, given that most of us now spend a good portion of our day wearing a mask in the age of coronavirus. Make no mistake, though, concept and craft hold equal footing in Bombshell. Van Beusekom uses his training in haute couture tailoring and application of the Green Arts movement’s repurposing strategies to create truly stunning and unique objects. History and aesthetics collide in Bombshell, and the results are nothing less than spectacular. What were the ideas that inspired this project? I started working on these masks about 10 years ago. Originally, the idea was focused on identity … If we all had to wear an assisted breathing device for whatever reason – back then I was thinking epidemic, global warming and pollution, bioterror – how would we identify ourselves? That was where the original idea started. And then over the 10 years I created these, I evolved. And then that idea expanded and evolved. And now the meaning behind them and the significance behind them has again changed. Does working with masks right now make you feel trapped in a historical loop on some level? It really does and it is interesting. You go back to the Spanish flu and you go through the history of World War I and World War II and all these situations where we have experienced epidemics and we’ve had wars where we’ve had to wear these masks and we as a society relied on a mask in some form or another – I wanted to find a way [continued on page 15] orlandoweekly.com

to break the stigma of all that. I wanted to say, is a mask hiding something or is it revealing something? And what I mean by that is, when you look at something like, say, Halloween, we can choose to be something that is exciting, we choose to be whatever we want to be for that night and express that desire. It’s a way of looking at how society is playing off of this pandemic right now in the masks that they’re choosing to wear. It’s a whole new level of changing who you are and changing how you want to be viewed. “Bombshell” is a very loaded word … Choosing the name was very personal to me because I wanted something to make people think. With Bombshell you immediately think of old Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Rock Hudson, Joan Crawford – you think of that classic beauty. But Bombshell is also trench warfare and it’s a very terrifying thing. What can you tell us about the work that went into constructing these masks? When I started this, a friend of mine had donated his

gas masks from his time in the Armed Forces … and then that snowballed into other people donating gas masks. A lot of them are older, a lot of them do come from World War II, and they are from all over the world. But most of them are donated, like 90 to 95 percent of my collection. In total, with what I have currently in progress and currently completed, I have about 38 pieces. The materials are, for the most part, repurposed. So if a costume shop had spare crystals and fabric and feathers, they would donate them to me. And that’s how I got started with it. At least 50 percent or more of the materials on each mask, including the mask itself, are donated or repurposed. The phrase “couture gas masks” popped out at me. The idea behind the couture side of “couture gas masks” was just the idea that everything is hand-crafted, hand-patterned, I select the beads and all the fabric … all the sequins are all hand-stitched one at a time onto organza, and then those pattern pieces are stitched onto the mask. And so there really is a haute couture element

to it, as couture as it can be for not being true fashion. I can spend anywhere from 80 to a couple hundred hours on a single mask. That’s intense. Some of them are made to be worn. And the ones that are made to be worn are still fully functional, they have not been permeated in any way. So you could very well put your filters into it and you could strap it on and it would be functional. But the intent was always that these would be displayed as a fine art piece. And when you go into the couturing elements, the beads are Czech glass beads or Austrian beads, they’re silver, they’re 24-karat gold. If I’m using gold leaf, it’s all 24-karat gold leaf, it’s all handapplied, all the crystals are generally Swarovski. And it’s the combination of adding the green elements with the high-end elements and blending them seamlessly. It’s that feel of trying to make it feel high-end but have it be a mix of the old and the new, so it has some sort of a history to it. I think that’s important in telling the story.

art to succeed, it better be a sculpture capable of stopping a steel projectile traveling 1,800 miles an hour. Thankfully, director Mark Street isn’t a cynic. And though his documentary, Can Art Stop a Bullet: William Kelly’s Big Picture, has a long title, it never overstays its welcome. It might be described as overly ambitious, thanks to its globe-trotting structure and almost two dozen interviews of artists and activists. But partially because of that ambition, it offers an inspiring, stylish examination of how painting, drawing, photography and sculpture can salve the wounds of bullets and bombs. Further, it shows how, if shared with the right people, art can prevent those bullets being fired and bombs being dropped in the first place. Despite its packed format, the film is, at its heart, the story of one man: AmericanAustralian artist William Kelly. And that story is framed, both literally and figuratively, by his creation of a monumental peace-themed tapestry for the State Library of Victoria. Over the film’s 90 minutes, his work is slowly revealed, turning the collage into the movie’s MacGuffin. So while the interviews play out and the issues behind the images are discussed, the tapestry becomes the audience’s carrot (sans stick). In fact, if Kelly’s dreams come true, there will be no more sticks. – CM

O

rlando’s Global Peace Film Festival, now entering its 18th year of presenting thought-provoking cinema, will be a very different experience this year, with virtual screenings and panels. But one thing that hasn’t changed is the GPFF’s commitment to the values of access, equity, inclusivity, independence and encouraging dialogue through film. A carefully curated selection of 20 films from around the world will be available for streaming throughout the GPFF’s run, with accompanying online panel discussions. One of the most emotionally affecting and wellassembled documentaries you’ll ever have the privilege to see, 16 Bars is actually two movies at once. On one level, it’s a close-up portrait of four inmates at a Virginia jail who are struggling to escape a deadly cycle of addiction, violence, incarceration and despair. But simultaneously, it’s a music doc about a rehabilitative program that brings in Speech from the group Arrested Development to record the cons’ heartfelt, supremely listenable original

We’ve heard the phrase “quid pro quo” a lot recently in the world of politics. But it isn’t necessarily bad. In fact, in the context of a political campaign, it can simply mean that a candidate vows to keep a promise to fight for a better life for citizens in exchange for their votes. Nowhere is that promise more important than the Sunshine State, which just might decide the 2020 presidential contest. Yet the Floridians living in the three communities profiled in Swing State Florida feel forgotten. Most disaffected are the migrant farm workers of Immokalee, whose daily deportation fears are palpable. But the residents of the historically Black community of Liberty City, in Miami, are equally disappointed in their government, as are the citizens of the Hurricane Michael-ravaged Panhandle. Though director Samuel George’s documentary is a bit rough around the edges and only touches on the political and social issues at the film’s core, it rarely fails to inform and inspire. And in our current media-crazy cacophony, the doc satisfyingly lowers the volume to a quiet, cinema-vérité level, allowing an honest examination of the lives of real people. It’s important viewing for all Floridians. – CM

The material on display ranges from protest rap to introspective country blues, and all of it adds a layer of poignancy to its authors’ troubled pasts (which, as recounted here, are classically tragic yet never clichéd). The movie keeps us on the edge of our seat, waiting to see which if any of these four perpetually at-risk souls will be able to transcend a system that’s hardwired to see them as little more than wards of the state. The tension between their triumphant music-making and the anguish that awaits them around every corner makes for a viewing experience you won’t soon forget. – SS

For the past 15 years, I’ve been

covering the evolution of Orlando’s haunt industry, at both Universal Orlando’s acclaimed Halloween Horror Nights and the independent haunted attractions – from 2006’s Nights of Terror to last year’s Dark Horizon – that have dared challenge its dominance. This year, the coronavirus pandemic managed to do what no competitor had, derailing Universal’s eagerly anticipated 30th HHN celebration. But the event’s cancellation did little to dampen the enthusiasm of hard-core horror fans, who have lined up to snag exclusive merchandise from Universal Studios Florida’s HHN Tribute store, organized #HHNatHOME events over social media and circulated currently unconfirmed rumors that select haunted houses will open for daytime park guests starting Sept. 19. That hunger for scares seems to finally leave an opening for Orlando’s alternative Halloween offerings, and one innovative socially distanced attraction appears poised to take a bloody bite out of Universal’s monstrous market share. Scream n’ Stream advertises itself as the area’s first drive-through haunt, and according to co-creator and production manager Chris Louis, it may be your best bet to “bring as many of the Halloween traditions that we know and love safely into this godforsaken year.” If the loss of HHN30 hit you hard, you’re not alone. Louis, who experienced his first Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood in 1997 and has attended every year since, says he was “devastated.” “My wife and I will come to Orlando and stay for weeks at a time, just to go to Halloween Horror Nights over and over and over again,” he mourns. More than merely a fan, Louis served as an HHN Orlando production manager from 2006 through 2009, “taking the creative vision and executing, bringing in costuming, bringing in makeup, bringing in scenic [and] audiovisual; bringing all those

components together to execute the event every single night that it happens.” During the Great Recession, Louis left Universal for convention work at Disney (as well as in the Caribbean and Atlanta) before founding his own corporate audiovisual services company. But the love of Halloween never left him, and July’s announcement of HHN30’s cancellation proved the perfect opportunity to return to the haunt industry. “Now that all those corporate events have gone away and we have all this equipment and know-how just idling, doing nothing, I thought, ‘What could we do with our lighting and our sound, and our audiovisual industry connections to leverage in the fall?’,” Louis explains. “My wife and I have been talking about doing a director Halloween event as far back as June; we just didn’t know how all the pieces would come into place.” Once HHN30’s cancellation was official, Louis leapt into action. “I spent two whole coffee-fueled days scanning Google Maps all over Central Florida, looking for a site that made sense,” he says, before landing on a 32-acre abandoned RV park behind Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures in Kissimmee. “We’ve got these great roads that wind through these beautiful moss-ridden trees, and every 50 feet there’s power and there’s water, so we can plug in all of our audio and our lights, and we can even put in some water gags.” To fill those acres with frights, Louis enlisted talented former colleagues including scenic designers Kyle Ransbottom and Andrew Dugay, makeup artist Michael Burnett, and other Universal veterans. Together, they cooked up an original storyline worthy of a ’90s slasher flick – randy teens rile up a cannibal cult in an abandoned drive-in – and translated it into a 1.25-mile-long tableau featuring 10 scary show-scenes through which guests drive their own cars, at a maximum speed of 3 miles per hour.

Cars will be dispatched into the attraction every 60 seconds, with actor-controlled stoplights ensuring safe separation. “We don’t want to have vehicles just one in front of the other with no gaps between them [because] it makes for a terrible show if brake lights are constantly in your face from the car in front of you,” says Louis. “We wanted you to have just your headlights in dim mode ahead, nothing in the road in front of you, and this sort of feeling like you’re out there all by yourself.” A main motivation behind producing Scream n’ Stream was giving work to Orlando’s unemployed creatives, not merely as volunteers but as paid employees. “We know a lot of folks are really passionate about Halloween, and we know a lot of folks are eager to get back to work,” says Louis. While some other attractions utilize unpaid staff or promise talent a share of profits, Louis says he’s committed to providing his cast and crew with paychecks (excepting a handful of scenic interns, who are receiving school credit and expenses). “I just can’t imagine a world where we could get 30 people to come out here almost daily and sweat in the sun to build scenic and put on costumes and fake blood and perform, and not pay them,” he says. “We want people to be invested in what they’re doing with us. We certainly don’t want our security or operations team members who are guiding vehicles to be volunteers because they need to have skin in the game. … We need to have perfection in some areas, and that perfection has to translate to safety and security for everyone involved. So, for that we really need to have paid people, in my opinion.” Scream n’ Stream runs weekends from Sept. 25 through Oct. 31. Henry’s Depot in Sanford engineers some fine fare out of an old railroad station BY FAIYAZ KARA

ean Kelley showed remarkable poise and patience in renovating and refurbishing a 140-year-old former railroad depot into a food hall. It took about two years and a fair amount of drawing, designing, digging and demolishing before Henry’s Depot, named after railroad tycoon Henry Plant, opened to the delight of food-conscious Bokey folk. It’s a gorgeous restoration – wraparound porch, cupola, spacious back patio and all – and a testament to Kelley’s determination to see his vision through. Part of that vision: a cocktail bar in the caboose of the hall called the Basin. And in case all you diehard tipplers are wondering, its Art Nouveau–meets–Florida Cracker aesthetic gives Sanford yet another reason to gloat in the face of Orlando. The bar is an instant classic, and its potables – like the Sazerac – are properly potent. Beyond the confines of the bar is your average-looking food hall with some notso-average eats. I had a remarkably fresh blackened mahi-mahi sandwich ($15) at the Current Seafood Counter run by Mike Smith. Smith sources from Ocean Fresh in Winter Springs, including the shrimp ($13) that he butterflies, batters and fries like a champ. He hopes to offer oysters at his mod-

est bar in the near future but, like so many others, he’s in survival mode. “Right now, I’m barely hanging on,” he says, so it was nice to see a slew of customers walk up after I placed my order. On another visit to the depot, I met up with some friends and we all dove into a pie from Oak Flame Pizza, which offers New York-ish style numbers “with Southern roots.” We opted for red sauce, sausage (procured from Hopkins Meat in Sanford) and shredded collards for some Southern flair; it took all of three minutes to cook, thanks to a Forno Bravo oven firing at 600-700 degrees. Overall, a great thin-crust pizza, even if my dining comrades felt the crust was a smidge underdone. BTW: The red sauce is vegan, as are two cheese options – the lemon ricotta and shredded mozz. But if it’s vegan fare you crave, head next door to Dixie Dharma and get the DFC, or “Dharma Fried Chick’n,” bowl ($15) like we did. The Buffalo’ed flappers fashioned from soy protein are worth clucking about, but the garlic mac and cheese (it’s cashew

cheese), the rosemary mashed potatoes and the roasted Florida corn add considerable heft to the bowl. It might be the most substantially filling meal offered in the food hall, especially when sided with an order of cornbread ($3). Just as gratifying was the “Hillbilly Chili” dog ($6), served on a pretzel bun with a little curry-spiced chili, fried onions and za’atar sauce. Directly across from Dixie Dharma is Salvatore’s, which won’t be featured on HappyCow anytime soon. Boar’s Head meats and cheeses go into their sandwiches, with rolls coming from JJ Cassone Bakery in Port Chester, New York. While the roast beef ($10.85) and a buildyour-own sub stuffed with Cajun turkey and tavern ham ($10.85) were a meat-eater’s delight, I took issue with the bread being cold. Like cold-cold. I suppose it prepped our mouths for the ice cream – cake and tea, mint stracciatella and purple sticky rice – we scooped up at Greenery Creamery. I got mine on a black ash cone made from activated charcoal, then I got even more activated charcoal into my system (no, I wasn’t poisoned) with a twist on a lavender latte from Mahogany Coffee. It’s called “Ghost” and came topped with house-made whipped cream and black sugar. I appreciated owner-barista Devon Ally’s precision and care in crafting the beverage for me. It won’t be too difficult railroading me into returning to the food hall when What the Chuck, a craft burger joint from Tennessee Truffle’s Nat Russell, opens. For last Thursday night’s NFL season opener, a friend of mine picked up some USDA Prime burgers from Fleming’s Steakhouse in Winter Park and brought them over to watch the game. We saw the Houston Texans players take a stand by staying in the locker room for the national anthem; heard fans booing as the players of both teams locked arms in unity during a moment of silence. Then we talked. And we listened to each other’s takes about the state of this country, racism, nationalism, voting, politics and, less importantly, the fantasy football waiver wire. All over burgers, the most American of foods. I got mine with jalapeños. Someone else got theirs without bacon. Another got it minus the bun. All different, but all still burgers. “PREEMIES” I’m a straight man who’s been dating a woman for not quite four months. In the beginning things were light. But things started to get heavy quickly. Two weeks in she revealed her very serious abandonment issues and then began asking me whether I really loved her and demanding reassurance that I wasn’t going anywhere and she wouldn’t be “just a single chapter” in my life. After a month, I met her seven-yearold son, her parents and her ex. Then we had a pregnancy scare. She told me that if she was pregnant she would keep it because then I would have to stay. That alarmed me. I voiced that we’d been dating for very a short time and this wasn’t a good time for either of us to have a child. She wasn’t pregnant, luckily. Even before this incident, my body had started to manifest signs of anxiety – upset stomach, sleepless nights, loss of appetite, etc. So, I summoned up all of my courage (conversations like this are extremely difficult for me) and told her that I couldn’t do this anymore. She started to cry and begged me to give her a second chance. I wound up spending the rest of the weekend at her place and agreed to stay in the relationship. But I didn’t feel good about it. I tried to end things again after speaking to my therapist but she won’t take no for an answer and constantly brings up the promises I made about really loving her. I hate this and I feel terrible for her son. Any thoughts on how to dismantle this thing? Or do I just need to run? Passionate Reassurances Extracted So Soon Undoes Relationship Exit As I explained to a reader in a similar situation: “We need someone’s consent before we kiss them, suck them, fuck them, spank them, spoon them, marry them, collar them, etc. But we do not need someone’s consent to leave them. Breakups are the only aspect of our romantic lives where the other person’s consent is irrelevant. The other person’s pain is relevant, of course, and we should be as compassionate and considerate as possible when ending a relationship. (Unless we’re talking about dumping an abuser, in which case safety and self-care are all that matters.) But we don’t need someone’s consent to dump them.” Voice that it’s over, PRESSURE, and then refuse to get drawn into negotiations about whether it’s over. It’s over. If she needs to cry on someone’s shoulder, she’ll have to call a friend. And if she brings up the promises you made after she “revealed” her abandonment issues weeks into this relationship, apologize for not being strong enough to resist her obvious – if possibly subconscious – efforts to manipulate you. She shouldn’t have asked you to swear your undying love after you’d

known each other for such a short time, and you shouldn’t have made the promises you did. You failed her and yourself by not telling her it was too soon for that shit – too soon to say “I love you,” too soon to know whether she would be a chapter in your life, too soon to meet her son (!), her parents (!!) and her ex (!!!). Demands for premature reassurances of everlasting love, like all demands for premature commitments, are intended to make exiting the relationship more difficult. Not for the person making the demands, of course; they’re always free to go. And while I’m not calling your girlfriend an abuser, demands for premature commitments are often red flags for abuse; being asked to make a premature commitment after a few weeks or months – by moving in together or adopting a dog or (God forbid) getting married – makes it infinitely harder for a person to leave once the mask slips and they see the abuser lurking behind it. Again, I don’t think your girlfriend is an abuser, but she weaponized her insecurities (“It’s nice to meet you, now let me tell you about my abandonment issues!”) to extract what amounts to premature commitment from you. And she involved her son in that effort, which is really unconscionable. You should be seeing someone for at least six months to a year – you should be well out of the honeymoon phase if not quite into the fartingin-front-of-each-other phase – before being introduced to your new partner’s kid(s). And while that’s on her, not you, you should’ve refused to meet her son so quickly and seen her desire to introduce you to him as a red flag. Learn the lessons, PRESSURE: When someone you’ve only recently started dating says, “Will you love me forever?,” the correct answer is never, “Of course I will!” The correct answer is always, “I think you’re a wonderful person and I want to keep seeing you but we can’t know – at this stage – what the future will bring.” If they respond by saying, “You know what? You’re right,” keep seeing them. If they respond by melting down and bringing up their abandonment issues, well, they’ve just demonstrated that they aren’t someone you would want a future with. I’m a 32-year-old straight man dating a 31-year-old straight woman. We’ve been seeing each other for eight months and became “Facebook official” (if that’s still a thing) in June. We are both in our first serious relationship after being divorced from relatively long marriages. (Me: eight years, two kids. Her: 10 years, no kids.) My question is when does suspicion – suspicion of cheating – become something you should bring up? I tend to

spill everything that’s going on in my life, which she says she appreciates but isn’t used to doing. She’s a very independent person, which I’ve never experienced before. It’s refreshing to know that my partner has her own friends but there are moments when I get stonewalled. Sometimes I get vague answers or no answers about where she is or who she’s with. She often tells me she “accidentally” turned off her notifications. Sometimes she will say she’s staying in and then I later find out that she went out. Maybe I’m taking things way too seriously considering the amount of time we’ve been together, but I feel I have to take things seriously since kids are involved. The Absent Girlfriend The uncharitable read: Your hunch is correct and your new girlfriend is being cagey about where she’s going and who she’s with because she’s cheating on you. The charitable read: Your new girlfriend is 31 years old, she was married for 10 years and you’ve been dating for eight months. Math has never been my strong suit but assuming her marriage didn’t end five minutes before you met, TAG, your girlfriend married very young. Which means she spent her entire adult life – most or all of her 20s and possibly a chunk of her teens – having to answer to a spouse. She only recently began to experience the kind of autonomy most of us get to enjoy before we marry and settle down (if we marry and settle down), TAG, and she may be reluctant to surrender that autonomy so shortly after achieving it. She may also have different ideas about what being Facebook-official means. Does that mean you’re monogamous? If it does, does she define monogamy the same way you do? Some other questions: Was going Facebook-official your idea or her idea? Did you ask for a premature commitment? You’re only eight months in – is it possible you involved your kids too soon? You obviously need to have a conversation with your girlfriend – if you can get her on the phone – about your expectations and definitions. If you expect her to let you know where she is at all times and who she’s with, TAG, make that clear. But if that is what you expect, well, here’s hoping she dumps you. Because even if you lived together, even if you were married, even if she wanted to spend the rest of her life with you, your girlfriend would still entitled to a little privacy and her autonomy.
