¶ ‘We can’t out-organize voter suppression’ In November 2020, millions of voters like me went to the polls and cast a ballot for Joe Biden. Now, with a relentless GOP attack on our voting rights underway, I’m asking President Biden to deliver on his promises. It’s time for Biden to go further than talking about supporting voting rights legislation. We need him to come out and fully support ending the filibuster so the Senate can finally pass voting rights legislation like the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. With the filibuster intact, these bills have no chance of passing. Senate Republicans blocked the Freedom to Vote Act from even coming to a debate! We need the president to use his power of office to pressure the Senate to end the filibuster and clear a path for voting rights. We can’t out-organize voter suppression. History will remember how President Biden handles these attacks on our right to vote. I’m urging him to do the right thing. —James Tashjian, Orlando

But in 2021, we can’t get a single Republican senator to come out and unequivocally support protecting the freedom to vote for the American people. Senate Republicans wouldn’t even let the Freedom to Vote Act — a bill that was designed to get them on board — go to the floor for debate! That should tell you “ROCKIN’ HALLOWEEN”

It’s time for President Biden to recognize this reality and use the power of his office to demand the Senate abolish the filibuster. Supporting voting rights legislation alone is simply not enough. ¶ ‘50 votes should be enough’ We understand that Congress has been busy. Between massive infrastructure bills and making sure the government is funded, our senators have been handling a lot of legislation. But it’s crazy to me that massive infrastructure legislation can pass through with a simple majority vote, one that isn’t subjected to the filibuster. If 50 votes is enough to give lifetime appointments to Supreme Court Justices, appoint cabinet officials, and pass trillions of dollars in critical infrastructure spending, then it should be enough to protect our freedom to vote. We need Congress to pass comprehensive voting rights reform and we need Biden to step up and put pressure on the Senate to do so by publicly supporting an end to the filibuster. Biden’s stated support for voting rights reform simply isn’t enough. STOP THE SPIEL Florida election supervisors plead with GOP candidates to move away from ‘stolen election’ rhetoric BY DARA KA M, N SF
A
s Republicans throughout the nation continue to refuse to acknowledge former President Donald Trump’s reelection loss to Democrat Joe Biden nearly a year ago, Florida supervisors of elections are pleading with candidates and elected officials to tamp down the rhetoric. “The Great American Experiment, our cherished democracy, is under threat. Our nation is only as strong as the faith our citizens have that their voice, their vote, has a say in our government. In this hour, public trust in our elections is being systematically undermined, to the detriment of all Americans,” the Florida Supervisors of Elections association said in a document distributed last week. The statement from supervisors in a state in which Trump handily defeated his Democratic challenger by more than three percentage points — a landslide by Florida standards — comes as elections officials in various parts of the country are receiving death threats, quitting their posts or facing calls for “audits” to revisit the outcome of the 2020 presidential race. While county elections supervisors in Florida — along with Gov. Ron DeSantis — have repeatedly assured voters about the accuracy of the Sunshine State’s results, some Republicans county leaders continue to question the numbers. Last Wednesday’s statement was the first time
the statewide supervisors association called for a truce. The supervisors “continuously strive to debunk false claims, and ensure voters have access to accurate election information,” the statement said. “We are dedicated to the cause of election integrity, ensuring that every eligible voter’s ballot is counted accurately and that no fraud takes place. But false claims of fraud do not strengthen our elections. Instead, they degrade confidence in the institutions, and discourage citizen participation in our democracy,” the statement said. The supervisors noted that in the run-up to and aftermath of the 2020 election, “the integrity of our democracy has been challenged by misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation that sows discord and undermines trust in America’s electoral process.” “Many of us have been threatened by our fellow citizens who have been led astray by these deceptions,” they wrote, encouraging candidates and elected officials to “tone down the rhetoric and stand up for our democracy.” The supervisors’ statement was issued the same day that DeSantis’ political committee sent a fundraising email accusing Democrats of trying “every trick in the book” to sway the 2020 election. “They used the pandemic as an excuse to change election laws in ways that are uncon-
stitutional and ripe for fraud and abuse in our elections. This included the mass sending of unsolicited mail-in ballots, bans on voter ID, ballot harvesting, and unattended ballot drop boxes in states across the country,” DeSantis’ fundraising message began. The message also boasted about a controversial measure (SB 90) passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature this spring that makes it harder for Floridians to cast ballots by mail and added restrictions to drop boxes, where voters can drop off completed ballots. Elections supervisors have objected to the legislation, which proponents maintain is necessary to reduce fraud. Supervisors, however, point to evidence showing that fraud is extremely rare in elections in Florida and elsewhere. Leon County Supervisor of Elections Mark Earley, who will take over as president of the statewide association next year, told the News Service of Florida that, while his office hasn’t received specific death threats, it has been subject to “very ugly calls” after the November election. “It’s trying. It’s stressful. It’s disheartening. It makes me worried for my staff and, frankly, I guess, a bit for myself and my family,” Earley said in a phone interview Thursday. The supervisors association statement came amid recent calls for an “audit” of Florida’s election results. The Lake County Republican Party last month approved resolutions calling for a full audit of the 2020 election. Meanwhile, state Rep. Anthony Sabatini, R-Howey-in-the-Hills, has filed legislation (HB 99) that would require DeSantis to appoint an independent third party to conduct a forensic audit of the 2020 general election. An audit this year in Arizona drew controversy but ended up confirming Biden’s victory over Trump in a state that played a key role in the Democrat’s overall win last year. Florida Secretary of State Laurel Lee said this month that an already-completed audit of totals in Florida’s 67 counties showed “an exceedingly high level of election integrity and, again, demonstrated that our results were accurate, reliable.” Raising doubts about elections results in the absence of evidence of wrongdoing can have far-reaching effects, warned Manatee County Supervisor of Elections Mike Bennett, a former Republican senator from Bradenton. “The fraud that they’re talking about is very dangerous for our country because people lose faith in the system,” Bennett, a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam War, said in a phone interview. “The old adage, you tell a lie, you tell it big enough and long enough, it becomes true. And that really bothers me. It bothers me as a former member of the Legislature. Certainly it bothers me as a veteran. I just hate it.”

READY TO RUMBLE DeSantis and GOP Legislature call special session pretty much just to tee off on Biden’s vax requirements BY JIM SAUNDERS, N SF

et ready for a noisy November in the state Capitol. Gov. Ron DeSantis all but guaranteed that last week when he called for a special legislative session to push back against the Biden administration about vaccination mandates. Nearly two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, political fights about vaccinations and masks show no signs of going away. And for however long a special session lasts, the rhetoric will amp up on both sides. DeSantis, widely considered a potential 2024 presidential candidate, has spent months criticizing the Biden administration on COVID-19 issues. The special session will give him and other Republicans an opportunity to tee off, as it will focus on moves by the White House to require millions of workers across the country to be vaccinated. “We want to make sure that individuals in Florida have their livelihoods and their jobs protected,” DeSantis said at a news conference in Clearwater as he called for the special session. But Democrats immediately bashed DeSantis, who they have long accused of playing politics with the pandemic. “Yet again, Gov. DeSantis is troublingly more focused on scoring political points with his base than on the health and safety of Florida,” Sen. Shevrin Jones, D-West Park, said. “At every turn throughout the pandemic, the governor has rejected science, further endangering the lives of hard-working people across the state. Florida deserves leadership that will promote truth and facts, not more reckless politics with human lives on the line.”
But the reality is that Democrats have little power to stop legislation that DeSantis and House and Senate Republican leaders decide to pursue. The governor’s office released a list of requests for the special session that didn’t include directly trying to ban federal vaccination mandates in Florida. But, for example, the list included allowing people fired for refusing employer-required COVID-19 vaccinations to be eligible for unemployment compensation; seeking to “reaffirm” that government entities, including school districts, can’t fire employees based on vaccination status; and removing COVID-19 liability protections for businesses that fire employees based on vaccination requirements. While not specifically endorsing those ideas, House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, and Senate President Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, issued a joint statement that said “Florida will respond to this gross overreach by the federal government.” They indicated lawmakers could consider withdrawing the state from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which has worked on rules to require vaccinations for many workers across the country. Such a proposal would involve establishing a state program for worker safety. “We believe that by doing so, Florida will have the ability to alleviate onerous federal regulations placed on employers and employees,” Sprowls and Simpson said in the statement. It wasn’t immediately clear as of Friday morning when the special session will be held. But Democrats, including

Democrats in the White House, were gearing up to at least get their shots in against DeSantis. Responding to a tweet Thursday about the special session, White House Assistant Press Secretary Kevin Munoz replied, “There are leaders who want to get the pandemic over with and then there’s this.” ‘WHERE FEASIBLE’ As expected, the Senate redistricting process was handed last week to two subcommittees to begin drafting congressional and legislative maps for the next decade. Senate Reapportionment Chairman Ray Rodrigues, R-Estero, directed the subcommittee chairs — Fleming Island Republican Jennifer Bradley of the Congressional Reapportionment Subcommittee and Zephyrhills Republican Danny Burgess of the Legislative Reapportionment Subcommittee — to hold close to two “tier” standards outlined by the Florida Supreme Court. Tier 1, in part, includes a prohibition on drawing lines with the intent of favoring or disfavoring a political party or an incumorlandoweekly.com

bent. Tier 2 includes standards such as districts being nearly equal in population, remaining compact and, where possible, following boundaries of such things as counties and cities. Rodrigues said he’d prefer county boundaries be used, “where feasible.” “I recommend that staff explore the concepts that, where feasible, result in districts consisting of whole counties in less populated areas, and to explore concepts that, where feasible, keep districts wholly within a county in the more densely populated areas,” Rodrigues said. Reapportionment is expected to dominate the 2022 legislative session. House Minority Co-leader Rep. Evan Jenne, D-Dania Beach, predicted a “knock-down, drag-out” process as political careers hang in the balance. “Hopefully, everyone just adheres to what we have to do with the Constitution, and we hope that everybody does not try to make these maps in such a way to favor a political party, either of the political parties, or any one individual, whether they’re in office or not at this point,” Jenne told reporters this week. news@orlandoweekly.com

¶ Orange County schools may let mask mandate expire Orange County Public Schools may stop requiring students to wear masks next month. Though the school district is currently locked in a legal battle with the state over their decision to implement mask mandates amid a startling COVID-19 spike in county schools, the school board appears ready to let their mandate end. The district sent out a notification on Monday that their final meeting of October would not include a proposal to extend the mask mandate. “Tomorrow’s regularly scheduled school board meeting does NOT have the topic of mask requirements on the agenda,” OCPS’ Michael Ollendorff wrote in a statement. “Our current mask requirement remains in place until Oct. 30.” The release came as Orange County Democrats and the group Mask Up OCPS were holding a protest outside the school district’s administration building on Monday morning. Ultimately, they appear to have faith that Superintendent Barbara Jenkins will use her discretion to push for an extended mandate. “We are not surprised that it is not on the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting. The School Board voted in August to empower Superintendent Dr. Jenkins to make the decision,” said Orange County Democratic Party Chair Wes Hodge. “We fully expect Dr. Jenkins to announce her decision on a possible extension during her report to the school board during the meeting.” Lora Vail of Mask Up OCPS noted that the mandate wasn’t on the agenda for the August meeting in which the initial mandate was enacted. — AG

range County Mayor Jerry Demings was not cowed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ continued threats against the county over vaccine mandates. DeSantis called out Orange County at a rally last week, noting the story of a fire and rescue battalion chief who was terminated for refusing to discipline firefighters who ran afoul of the county’s employee vaccine mandate. In a press conference on Thursday, Demings told state leaders they knew where to find him if they had a problem. “They seem to care more about using firefighters as political pawns, rather than public servants who are entrusted to protect and serve,” Demings said. “So, if you ask me what is my response to the governor or anyone else, I say these simple words: Bring it on.” DeSantis trotted out fired battalion chief Stephen Davis, who held to his claim that he was merely defending employees who he
believed were listed in violation in error. “Can we confirm these things? Can we confirm that these people shouldn’t be on this list?” he asked, at the rally. “I had personal conversations with several who said they had the vaccination. And yet I was ordered to give them reprimands.” Davis later called the vaccination order “unlawful,” holding to a line espoused by several Orange County firefighters suing the county over the mandate. The back-and-forth is an escalation of rhetoric we’ve been hearing from both Demings and DeSantis over the last few months. Demings has repeatedly assured residents that the county’s mandate on government employees is within the law, while DeSantis has threatened millions in fines. Leon County in North Florida has already been fined to the tune of $3.5 million, but Orange County hasn’t budged.
Brevard County School Board members are considering limiting the amount of time speakers get for public comment, after several meetings have dragged on for hours. The idea that changes might be necessary came after a heated start to the school year that saw many districts considering mandatory masks to protect students against COVID-19. This led to a heated response from parents and anti-mask activists that stretched meeting times to previously unseen levels. During a meeting hammering out a possible solution to the overly long meetings (ugh, that sentence), Chair Misty Belford said the strain of such long sessions makes it difficult to do their jobs. “We’ve had some marathon board meetings, and I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t feel like I am at my best after we’ve sat in these seats for 12 hours and are at that point trying to make a decision,” Belford said at a policy development workshop, per Florida Today. “We’ve got to be reasonable with ourselves and staff who … oftentimes they get here at 5 o’clock in the morning, and they’re still here with us at 11 o’clock at night.” The new rules would adjust public comment time limits based around the number of speakers who sign up before the meeting. It would also bar large signs, flags on poles and other disruptive items from being brought into the chambers. Additionally, the rules would take away certain speakers’ platform, pushing non-agenda speakers to the end of the meeting and turning off the cameras before that section begins. —AG
¶ None of Loomer’s campaign dough came from the district she’s running for Laura Loomer has raised over $100,000 this quarter for her congressional campaign, but not one red cent of it came from the Central Florida district she plans to represent. Florida Politics reported last week that the alt-right troll and would-be representative has raised $106K in donations from across the nation — with the notable exception of Florida’s 11th congressional district, where she’s running. Only 26 people or organizations in the entire state of Florida gave to Loomer’s campaign. The website reports that a woman in Eustis and a man in Davenport both gave to Loomer, though they fall just outside of the confines of CD 11. Loomer has a habit of being not entirely welcome wherever she lands, so her support coming from outside the district where she hopes to unseat incumbent Republican Dan Webster makes a good bit of sense. Recently, Loomer was seen shuffling out of an Orlando restaurant with a crowd of antivax schnooks after they claimed the staff insulted them. —AG

Remembering the GraveMaster, briefly Orlando’s answer to Elvira BY MATTHEW MOY E R
“A
nd now my children, it’s time for Horrorscopes. Periscope down.” The hooded creature perched on a gargoyle-festooned throne, looking like a B-movie hybrid of the Cryptkeeper and Dr. Doom, theatrically pulls down a periscope from out of nowhere — with attendant submarine sounds. As dry ice billows through the TV studio set, he pulls out a tombstone and starts reading aloud absurdist predictions. “Pisces: Your dog’s rising sun is indicated by his back leg. Cancer: Don’t lick food from a stranger’s beard. Gemini: Beware if a man bleeding from the ears asks you to sign a bank note. … And finally, Leo: Beware if your blind date has a mole the size of Ernest Borgnine. We’ll be back.” Tucked away at the half-hour mark of the “Golden Age of Horror Hosts Vol. 1” video on YouTube, this strange and funny and compelling video was our introduction to the GraveMaster. “Horror hosts” are a uniquely American television phenomenon: creepily attired comics and cut-ups who’d crack jokes over bad horror flicks for local TV stations eager to fill airtime, movie quality be damned. It’s a proud, postmodernist tradition that goes back to Zacherle and Vampire in the 1950s. But for every horror host who cracked the national consciousness like Elvira or Svengoolie, there were countless regional fiends bubbling under on the far ends of the dial. Why, nearby Tampa even had Dr. Paul Bearer, a cadaverous undertaker who’d dispense groan-worthy puns at a machinegun pace in between equally painful horror films. But back to that GraveMaster clip. Though brief, it’s impressive stuff among the usually lo-fi standards of the horror host genre, and it’s more of a madcap romp than some of his peers’ work, with peppier pacing and lots of sight gags. The GraveMaster’s makeup and costume are top-notch; the set design and production is haunted-house worthy; the puns are appropriately corny, Letterman-esque fun (there’s a quip about a new kid’s toy, the “Mattel Quicksand Box,” that is pure demented dad-joke territory). And the GraveMaster even gives away tickets to the local premiere of a “hot new film” called Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. So far, so good, right? What really brought us out of our scrolling stupor, though, was when the GraveMaster announced a trivia contest in which the winner would score a glow-in-the-dark shirt with his ghoulish mug on it. And the address he directed answers to be sent was the WKCF TV 18 studio on Courtland Street … right here in Orlando. For indeed the GraveMaster was a product of the City Beautiful. Friday Nights With the GraveMaster broadcast for a few halcyon months in 1992, weekly at 11:30 p.m. out of the
Channel 18 studios. Though apparently canceled after one season to make way for syndicated sitcom reruns (the horror!), the show was ghastly fun right out of the gate. And — given the trivia, caption contests and amount of viewer mail read on the air — it found an audience of weirdos, horror hounds and insomniacs from day one. But sadly, here’s not much information on the GraveMaster to be found on the internet — a sparse IMDB entry here, short capsule bios on a couple of horror host-centric websites there, and a much better website dubbed “In the Night” that abruptly disappeared off the internet. Even worse, no full episodes are readily available, just a handful of compilation clips put together by discerning TV junkies. But the clips out there in YouTubeland hint at sublime, “how did this even get on TV?” mayhem. We watched them all religiously. And what mayhem it was! The GraveMaster, in the course of just a few months, was attacked by the Creeping Unknown, tormented by a miniature hand puppet of himself doing awful impressions, hosted a Christmas episode and even brought in the winner of the first (ahem) “Bithlo Talent Contest.” (Who then had a tragic zipper accident.) Who was responsible for this? We know a little. The man behind the GraveMaster’s frightening visage was Tim Kincaid (né Trombitas). If that name sounds familiar, it’s because his daytime gig was as Ranger Bob of the very popular local children’s show Ranger Bob’s Buckaroo Club. Sets and special effects were handled by Pat “Fleagore” Tantalo, an industry vet who went on to do special effects for big-time motion pictures like Bug, A Walk to Remember and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Trombitas is now retired from television, walking a very different path as both a man of the cloth in Winter Garden and a military chaplain in Apopka. Attempts to reach him to talk about that role were unsuccessful — which is not entirely surprising, given his current calling. Tantalo, meanwhile, sadly passed away in 2017. But at the 11th (witching?) hour, we did manage to track down the man credited as both “Floor Vampire” and “Ghost Writer” in the end credits: Pat Moran. Moran, now a staff writer at Charlotte, North Carolina’s alt-weekly Queen City Nerve, related a tan-

talizing anecdote during a brief exchange that tied the show in with another lost landmark of Orlando fright: “At the time of GraveMaster, I also worked at Orlando’s Terror on Church Street, mostly as Dracula,” Moran told us, “so I procured a few coffins for the show.” We were unable to coordinate with Moran for a longer interview before this issue went to press. So we’re left with more questions than answers, and only a small handful of video clips, stray photos and an ad from the Sentinel’s TV listings on the web as tangible evidence. More than likely the GraveMaster is buried forever. There will be no Elvira-style comeback. The coffin is well and truly shut on an Orlando original. And yet, if you point your ear toward Courtland Street this Halloween night, legend has it that you can still hear a ghostly voice whisper, “Good night, sleep tight, and don’t let the bedbugs — or unknown creeping bugs — bite.”

MODERNA WOMAN Comedian Chelsea Handler hits the Hard Rock this Friday BY S HELTON HULL

The tour continues on through at least March 2022, ou never know what Chelsea Handler is going to say, but you know what she’s NOT going to say: before it assumes its final form as a special for HBO Max, anything about Dave Chappelle, and that’s fine with which also produced her previous special, Evolution, in me. Whatever her private views on the matter are, she has December 2020. Long tours can be a source of stress wisely chosen not to tempt fate by speaking on it publicly, and fatigue for performing artists, especially when you’re stacking a bunch of one-nighters in and it is the rare subject on which sequence. Handler’s a pro, though, she has no comment. Beyond that, CHELSEA HANDLER a veteran comic well-versed in there were no preconditions. This makes her a crucial link in a chain that runs from Joan Rivers and Elayne Boosler to Nikki Glaser, Chelsea Peretti and Robby Hoffman (whose special I’m Nervous has no peer this year). She has always excelled in the format, and odds are very good that she will return to it. With Handler, one gets no sense that she is ever kidding, even when she might be. Her tone conveys consistent sincerity; she is not the type to just say things to get a cheap pop, or to just provoke debate. Handler is almost entirely immune to scandal, because she can’t be scandalized. To borrow a phrase from the late Margaret Thatcher, the lady’s not for turning, nor does she care much for pandering or pitter-patter. The pandemic did bring us closer to our families, while creating new ones over a year of stress sex, but Handler herself was of no such inclination. “I also want to give myself a pat on the back for remaining childless and alone during this lifetime,” she says. “My whole reason for not having children was on the off-chance that we might be living through a global pandemic, and then I’d have to be at home, home-schooling a child. So, I have never been more confident in my decision-making skills as I’ve been over the past year.” Another smart decision was to downsize, selling her home near the market’s peak (and that bubble will burst, sooner or later). “My sister came and invaded my house with her three children, and I didn’t appreciate that at all. I sold that house, promptly, after they left, and now I’m looking to get a smaller house, so that no one can do that to me again.” It’s kinda like Fran Lebowitz, who once reportedly renovated her NYC apartment to remove the extra bedroom, specifically to dissuade her friends from wanting to spend the night. We’ve all been there.

Adults seeking an escape from Orlando’s pixie dust may enjoy a cruise on the MSC Divina
After
a
surprisingly
sluggish
September, crowds at Orlando theme parks surged in October, and with the November reopening of America’s borders to foreign visitors, the region’s attractions are anticipating that holiday attendance will rival pre-COVID levels. But one significant segment of Central Florida’s tourism economy has continued to lag behind: the cruise industry. Cruise ships were already regarded by many as floating petri dishes prior to the pandemic, and after the cruise lines’ dispute with Gov. DeSantis, it isn’t surprising that customers haven’t yet returned en masse to Port Canaveral. As someone who has done my best to observe sanitary social distancing despite traveling for a living, I can’t say that my July tour of Carnival’s new Mardi Gras made me eager to jump aboard for a week at sea. However, after attending the September launch of the MSC Divina, this Swiss/ Italian-owned newcomer to the competitive Canaveral cruise market made me an offer I couldn’t refuse, and earlier this month I discovered firsthand what it’s like cruising in the age of coronavirus. [Full disclosure: MSC comped my fare, but I tipped the crew and covered certain extra charges.] The world’s fourth-largest cruise line, MSC started as a commercial shipping company and is well-known to European travelers. Although MSC has been operating ships out of Miami for many years, the brand only recently began offering Port Canaveral departures on the Divina, which will trade places in late November with the larger Meraviglia for winter sailings. Despite having less name recognition among Orlando-based cruisers than Disney or Royal Caribbean, I felt confident taking a chance on MSC because their COVID-19 precautions seemed equal or superior to their competitors, and far more comprehensive

than any of the other Central Florida attractions I frequent. For starters, all adult guests on MSC must provide not only proof of full vaccination before boarding, but also a negative COVID test taken within two days of departure. (I recommend the Abbott BinaxNOW, which you can administer from home via webcam in under 20 minutes.) Once aboard, the handful of kids under 12 on our voyage were excluded from vaccinated-only areas, sanitizer dispensers were ubiquitous, temperatures were taken daily, and masking was consistently enforced everywhere except the pools and restaurants, making it the safest-feeling public space I’ve been in all year. (If only MSC were as health-conscious about the second-hand smoking drifting from the casino and outdoor bars.) Even the obligatory muster drill was reimagined as an in-cabin video presentation, which I greatly appreciated. Speaking of cabins, I stayed in a ginormous Yacht Club balcony suite, which had a bathtub and walk-in closet and included perks that were both wonderfully indulgent and slightly awkward, such as a personal butler who will bring you breakfast in bed, walk you to meals at the exclusive restaurant and serve you cocktails before bedtime. Such luxurious pampering starts around $300 per person per night — significantly cheaper than similar concierge rooms on competing cruises — but you can book a budget cabin without all the extras for less than a third of that rate. Consider splitting the difference with an Aurea upgrade, which includes unlimited use of the superb spa facilities and private sundeck. No matter which class you choose, you’ll have access to eateries ranging from an entirely average buffet (thankfully plated by staff, with no self-service) to up-charge steak and sushi restaurants (the fish quality was phenomenal, but seasonings were far from authentic). Stick with the Italian and Mediterranean specialties, like fresh-made pastas, and you won’t go hungry; and get a drink package if you plan to stay “hydrated,” because a la carte cocktails can add up quickly.
In deference to the Bahamas’ 31 percent vaccination rate, I opted not to disembark the ship in Nassau, but the two days we spent at Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, made the trip more than worthwhile. The company has been restoring the former sand mine’s ecology since 2015, resulting in a carbon-friendly sea turtle sanctuary powered by solar panels and reverse-osmosis desalination. Ocean Cay lacks the kidfriendly activities of Disney’s Castaway Cay and Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay (though the lighthouse does do a nifty nighttime light show), but its lack of attractions is the attraction: stargazing on the pristine beach with virtually no light pollution made for one of the best cruise excursions I’ve ever experienced. The same could probably be said of the entire MSC experience, as this isn’t necessarily a great vacation for those who need non-stop entertainment. The Divina sports a single short water slide, a 4D ride that was missing at least one dimension and an exquisite theater whose nightly productions range from an engaging Paris-inspired variety show to a talent-packed but tone-deaf Tina Turner tribute featuring a white woman singing Anna Mae Bullock’s biggest hits. There’s lots of live music in the socially distanced lounges, along with dance lessons and karaoke, but if you want energetic Carnival-style deck parties or continuous characters and crafting activities like Disney, look elsewhere. And if you’re dependent on technology, know that even the premium paid WiFi is pretty poor inside staterooms, while the tiny televisions offer little more than ESPN and shipboard advertisements. On the other hand, adults seeking an escape from Orlando’s pixie dust who can entertain themselves — reading a book beside the saltwater pool, relaxing in the Swarovski crystal-studded atrium or just watching the sunset with room-service prosciutto and Parmesan — can find great values on MSC over the coming months. Sweeping views and creative cocktails headline the JW Marriott’s new rooftop lounge, but the food fizzles BY HOLLY V. KAPHERR

llume, the new Japanese-fusion lounge at the JW Marriott Bonnet Creek, is a vibe. The moment you exit the elevator on the ninth floor, you might wonder if you took a wrong turn and ended up in the spa instead. Low lighting, soft music, staff speaking in hushed tones — are we here for a massage or a meal? Open since May, almost a year after the hotel itself started welcoming guests, Illume’s rooftop location is showstopping. We were shown to a spot on the airy balcony with a spectacular panoramic view of the Bonnet Creek area of Lake Buena Vista, just a stone’s throw from Epcot’s glowing golf ball. At one point, two separate firework displays lit up the sky: one at the neighboring Waldorf Astoria, and Epcot’s new “Harmonious” display. This isn’t a restaurant, and the seating situation confirms it. Relaxation and libation are the two focuses here, with traditional dining as a distant third. We shuffled and arranged ourselves awkwardly around a low, round coffee table bordered by an oversized lounge chair — too large for one person but not quite large enough for two — and sofa. There are bistro tables with chairs, so if you’re looking for a less casual dinner experience, request one when you make a reservation. Illume’s interior is stunning, with warm lighting and natural wood, cream-colored plush sofas and armchairs in muted colors. The 360-degree bar is front and center,
where the bartenders shake and stir some of the most creative (and expensive) cocktails in Orlando, ranging from $18 to $29. I ordered the Fire Bird ($20), a concoction of Suntory Vodka, sake, cantaloupe, green tea syrup and ginger jam, served in a stunning bird-shaped glass with a straw sticking out from the tail. My companions opted for the Illumination ($19), with tequila and passionfruit, served in a striking black long-stemmed coupe glass, and the Japanese Manhattan ($21), made with Askashi White Oak whisky and plum, Japanese vermouth and yuzu, garnished with a gold origami crane in a vintage cutglass vessel. Gorgeous. We also sampled the Tozai Blossom of Peace sake ($16), a sweet selection with notes of almond, plum and cherry. The rest of the beverage menu features a generous selection of Japanese whisky, beer, wine and sake both by the bottle and the glass. Next time I visit, we’ll stop there and go to another of Orlando’s excellent Japanese restaurants nearby for dinner. Unfortunately, the menu at Illume is writing checks it can’t cash. All of the menu items at Illume are meant to be communal, from the eight-piece signature maki rolls to shareable plates with three to four individual portions. The descriptions, which sound flavorful and innovative, just don’t translate onto the plate. I found myself wondering several times whether ingredi-
ents listed had simply been forgotten, or whether my palate was deceiving me. We started with a bowl of edamame ($10) with piquant togarashi sea salt, and the watermelon & crab ($17) — four one-bite lollipops of compressed watermelon with a mound of lump crab, grapefruit and pickled daikon radish with honey-lime vinaigrette. This was the favorite dish of the night, but other than the watermelon and the sweet saline crab meat, no other flavors could be found. If the red pepper and capers advertised were included in the tiny sakana fritters ($16), each about the size of a gumball, we couldn’t taste or see either of them. The house’s showcase maki roll, the Gyu No Kani ($32), packed slices of seared beef tenderloin atop snow crab, avocado and cucumber with black garlic aioli, scallions, kabayaki sauce and truffle oil. Sounds exciting, right? The result was enjoyable, especially the combination of the seared tenderloin and smoky sauce, but nowhere near the kind of umami that list of ingredients promises. We also tried two yakitori skewers, both served with a side of rice and on top of sauteed sugar snap peas and julienned carrots. One featured jumbo shrimp cooked well and glazed with citrusy ponzu ($24), and the other was mushrooms, onion yellow squash and zucchini, brushed with miso and grilled. Both were tasty but forgettable. Desserts, again, sounded incredible but didn’t deliver. The matcha tiramisu ($14) might as well have been vanilla cake with vanilla frosting dusted with cocoa powder. We detected only a whisper of that signature matcha bitterness on the finish. The chocolate ginger cake ($14) was, well, chocolatey and that’s about it. We finished neither. With a final check well into the three digits, we’d hoped to feel more satisfied. Service is understated and elegant without being standoffish, in congruence with the Japanese feel. We asked our server to take us through the menu and familiarize us with some new terms like “otsumami,” the Japanese word for finger foods. She was more than happy to provide a tour and offer some suggestions for favorite items. Visit Illume for the drinks and stay for the firework displays popping off all around. It’s a beautiful spot for date night or a special start to a celebration (then head down to Sear & Sea for dinner if you want to stay onproperty), but don’t expect fireworks from the kitchen.
(RE)OPENINGS + CLOSINGS Bread & Co. closed both locations at Fairbanks and Lotte Market on Oct. 22 and will reopen on Friday, Oct. 29, as part of the Tous Les Jours bakery franchise … Itsa Chicken! soft-opened on Tuesday outside Whiskey Lou’s Lounge across from Sideward Brewing in the Milk District. Chef Trent Robinson, formerly of Luma and Prato, is the fry guy … Lombardi’s Seafood is closing its café and expanding the retail market to include more prepared grab-and-go items … La Boutique by La Femme du Fromage is now open from Thursday through Sunday on the top floor of East End Market, selling “artisan products with a French flair.” As we reported in July, the second-floor space also includes a cocktail lounge and a rotating chef’s table … Bad As’s Sandwiches is trading one location for another, announcing it will be moving into the proposed “Holden Hub” on South Orange Avenue in Edgewood. The Holden Hub — projected opening March 2022 — will also house Great Greek Mediterranean Grill and SoDo Wine, along with spots for seven other vendors.

(Shudder) Hypnotic — Netflix horror queen Kate Siegel plays a woman whose attempt at healing her inner demons goes awry after she visits a hypnotherapist. Which is why I’ve always put self-improvement in the same category as ziplining and physical intimacy: It’s a lot safer to watch somebody else do them. (Netflix)
THURSDAY, OCT. 28: Horror Noire — Some of the leading lights of Black horror and newcomers alike contributed to this anthology of six terror tales. It’s Creepshow, with the zombies coming to take away your seasonings. (Shudder) Love Life — Season 2 focuses on William Jackson Harper’s Marcus Watkins character as the newly single book editor searches for love in the Big Apple. Narration is by They Live’s Keith David, whom you can just hear exhorting Watkins to not swipe right until he puts on the damn glasses. (HBO Max) Luis Miguel: The Series — The show’s third and final season is said to follow two separate timelines as it dramatizes the life of the legendary Mexican singer. I sure hope one of those timelines has him traveling across the multiverse to meet the cast of Wu-Tang: An American Saga, because the CW has made me absolutely expect that sort of stuff. (Netflix) Star Trek: Prodigy — A bunch of teenagers commandeer a Federation starship in a new animated series co-produced with Nickelodeon. Kate Mulgrew returns as the voice of Captain Janeway, who’s now merely a holographic projection. Wow, just like ABBA! (Paramount+)
FRIDAY, OCT. 29: Army of Thieves — A planned bank heist coincides with the beginning of the zombie apocalypse in a franchise flick set six
years before the events of Army of the Dead. But don’t worry: Zack Snyder didn’t direct this one, so you’ll be in and out in a week, tops! (Netflix) Colin in Black and White — Ava DuVernay teams with Colin Kaepernick to craft a six-episode dramatization of the courageous footballer’s teenage years. In a clever turnaround, young Kaep is shown landing in hot water with the school principal when his trick knee prevents him from standing for the Pledge of Allegiance. (Netflix) Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin — Remember found-footage horror? Oren Peli sure hopes you do, because he’s rebooting his series of verité shockers with a seventh installment. Listen, at this point, you can get better scares by watching security-camera videos from an Orlando apartment complex. (Paramount+) Swagger — The formative experiences of Kevin Durant spark a 10-episode series about the complicated world of youth basketball. If this trend continues, next week we’ll be watching a pubescent Bob Uecker realize he can’t play baseball. (Apple TV+) SEAL Team — Oh the shame! Oh the humiliation! Only four episodes into their fifth season, the elite fighting forces of CBS are getting their ass sent off to streaming. And if they want to stay here, they better come up with some good stories about having played highschool sports. (Paramount+) The Time It Takes — Heartbreak gradually gives way to recovery in a subtitled Spanish-language drama series about a jilted woman who tries to spend one minute less each day thinking about her ex. Given that they were together for a decade, that means she’ll be completely baggage-free by the time Jeff Bezos is broke. (Netflix)
MONDAY, NOV. 1: The Informant: Fear and Faith in the Heartland — The newly created George Stephanopoulos Productions offers up a documentary about a foiled domestic terror plot that supposedly could have been worse than the Oklahoma City bombing. LOCAL RELEASES Few in the Orlando music scene can claim the creative restlessness or stamina of Jeff Ilgenfritz. Since the mid-2000s, his irrepressible spirit has blazed a trail of noteworthy Orlando names impressive in both chronological and stylistic span, a career that’s included bands like Mumpsy, the Heathens, Moonmen From Mars and Luscious Lisa, among many others. Even with a portfolio that deep, diversified and established, Ilgenfritz’s drive remains ever forward as he continues to open fresh new doors. Just eight months ago, he unveiled Corvus, Incorporated, an open musical partnership with Real Radio personality Sabrina Ambra. That streak of breaking new ground continues this year with yet another debut. Florida Slang is a joint venture between Ilgenfritz and musical newcomer Darci Ricciardi, a local dance teacher and character (“Angela”) on Ilgenfritz’s “Fort Fritz” podcast. They just released their first album, Canal Flowers, on venerable Orlando indie label Post Records. Although a collaboration, Florida Slang’s first outing sounds like Ilgenfritz returning to his signature fundamentals and playing to his well-known strengths. The songs here coast with the sparkling indie-pop buoyancy that made Mumpsy so winsome, and they represent some of Ilgenfritz’s finest work in many years. Canal Flowers is now streaming on major platforms. But it’s just the first sampling from a well of about 40 songs they’ve written since last November, and a follow-up LP is already planned for an early 2022 release. For many years, DeLand’s Bryan Raymond was an accomplished, card-
Restless Orlando musician Jeff Ilgenfritz adds the sparkling indie-pop of Florida Slang to his already sprawling musical CV carrying member of the area metal scene in bands like Junior Bruce and Hope and Suicide. But after a motorcycle accident that nearly killed him six years ago, he’s since spent his time more quietly as a lone-wolf singer-songwriter. Though more muted, his intensity’s now reserved for the inward gaze. Perhaps no song paints Raymond’s head space as bluntly as his new single “As a Man.” With the rare — though still spare — accompaniment of his old Junior Bruce bandmate Tom Crowther on bass, “As a Man” haunts with the scar and candor of someone now living on the other side of near death. It’s now streaming everywhere.
MUSIC EVENTS THIS WEEK Palomino Blond, The Casket Lottery, Glazed: Solid emo lineup though this is, the rising star to look out for is the nonemo one. Young, Iggy Pop-endorsed Miami band Palomino Blond have been heating up the radar for a while now with their thick and melodic guitar rock. But they’re coming to town ahead of the big Nov. 19 release of their hot Jonathan Nuñez-recorded debut album, ontheinside, on excellent Miami label Limited Fanfare (home to local
garage-soul heroes the Sh-Booms). It’s an impressive work that furthers the chunk and fuzz of 1990s indie rock on up to wuthering shoegaze heights. Catch them before they explode. (8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, Will’s Pub, $15) Antagonizers ATL, Effit, Born Losers: Punk rock blossoming into the infinitely wide spectrum that it is today is a good thing. But sometimes, you just wanna get out the boots and get back to the roots. This is the rare chance around here to do that with Antagonizers ATL, a Georgia band specializing in the kind of blue-collar street-punk that’s in the loud and proud lineage of the Dropkick Murphys. Local support includes political punks Effit and waster punks Born Losers. It’ll be a punk oasis in the middle of all the downtown Halloween insanity. Go get Oi! (8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, Sly Fox, $10) Six Monstrous Sounds: But if wading into downtown during the perfect storm of a COVID-era Halloween weekend is a prospect of true horror then, congratulations, you’re sane. A great alternative is this live outdoor event in the Milk District showcasing three of Central Florida’s most notable underground tape labels: darkwave cassette label Popnihil (full disclosure: Popnihil is run by OW editor Matthew Moyer), electronic label Circuit Church and vaporwave label Illuminated Paths. The subterranean parade will include acts like Jas000n, TTN, Modal Plane, Ohtwo and more. The show’s free and there’ll be a midnight costume contest.
