¶ Swell maps Last week, the results of the most 2020 U.S. Census were revealed, and Florida learned it would gain a Congressional seat. Thus beginneth the season of redistricting, in which the Legislature redraws the district maps to apportion even numbers of citizens according to population. Based on the protracted legal battles that followed the 2010 reapportionment, which did things like split Winter Park between four different congressional districts and delineate districts that looked more like spaghetti than cities, we have low expectations of how fair the redrawn maps will be this time around. Dear Editor: In 2012, the Florida redistricting process was anything but transparent. Politicians in Tallahassee collaborated with partisan political operatives to introduce district maps that overtly favored Republicans while publicly claiming they were including input from Floridians. Years later, those unconstitutional maps were overturned in court, but not before damaging our political system and the reputation of the elected officials that held a sham public process. Florida now has benchmark congressional and State Senate maps, recently drawn and approved by the Florida Supreme Court that voters know are fair. Rather than starting these maps from scratch, the Legislature should use these fair maps to guide its drawing process. We also need to make sure the redistricting process and resulting congressional, State Senate, and State House maps live up to the promise of the Fair Districts Amendments that were overwhelmingly passed by 63 percent of voters. ‘GQP PRIORITIES’

With the announcement that Florida is gaining one congressional seat, along with the incoming census data in the fall, now is the time to begin a transparent map-drawing process. Map drawing must be open and accessible to the public and provide citizens ample time to provide input. If the Florida Legislature can commit to this, Floridians will be able to have their trust restored in the process again. Richard Waldor, Hunters Creek

¶ Stranglehold Last week, Motor City loudmouth Ted Nugent, after denying the pandemic was real, admitted that he was fighting a bad case of COVID-19. Even more karmically, he caught the dose while playing at a Naples grocery store whose owner gained attention after stating on Facebook Live, “No one’s getting infected here, no one’s dying. … It’s a fraud, it’s a sham, and people have got to wake up.” Apparently Nugent agreed until the day he tested positive, saying: “I have had flu symptoms for the last 10 days. I thought I was dying.” Our readers wished him a speedy recovery, both from his respiratory ailment and his general assheadedness. @Mike Hunter This is a great story. However, it is quite sad that all these COVID deniers will only admit it’s real once they get the virus. If they all just listened in the first place, we wouldn’t still be in this situation. @Jeff Nolan Maybe his convalescence will allow him to reflect on the fact that he hasn’t made an album anyone gives a shit about in 41 years.

Question: My son was running from a police officer and the K-9 dog bit a hole in my son’s leg. He wants to sue the Sheriff’s Department. Does he have a case? Answer: It is a definite maybe! Excessive force applies to a K-9 dog as well. The question is, “did the dog use a reasonable amount of force to stop your son?” I have seen good police dog take downs and have seen a K-9 literally chew a significant portion of person’s calf off while the person was laying spread out for over sixty seconds. These dogs are not house pets. They are meant to assist and protect their police handlers. They can be amazingly trained but are still dogs. How good these dogs do their jobs is dependent on training, control, and their own mental and physical abilities. In Florida, we have comparative negligence too, so your son’s noncompliance with the officer’s order will come into play. The moral of the story is, “running from a police dog could possibly turn you into a chew toy.” jeff kaufman

Demings reduces social distancing guidelines to three feet, amid rise in COVID vaccinations Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings last Wednesday updated the county’s ongoing mask mandate to combat coronavirus. In the wake of the CDC updating their guidelines around mask-wearing earlier in the week, Demings opted to reduce requirements on fully vaccinated people. “As I have said many, many times, here in Orange County, we do follow the science,” he said. “I have amended my facial covering executive order.” Demings laid out a three-phase rollback of mask mandates, with the first phase effective immediately. The new rules drop social distancing requirements for all people to three feet and allow for fully vaccinated people to visit other fully vaccinated people indoors. Demings also noted that fully vaccinated people can take part in maskless outdoor recreation, barring the presence of a crowd. “I’m making this announcement with caution,” Demings said. “I do not want us to get complacent.” Demings laid out further stages of the mask requirements being loosened. Phase 2, activated when more than 50 percent of Orange County residents 16 or over have received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine, will lift outdoor masking requirements for all people. Masks would still be required indoors. Phase 3 would come into play when 70 percent of residents 16 or older had received at least one shot. At that point, all mandates will be lifted. Mask mandates would also be lifted if the 14-day COVID-19 positivity rate fell below 5 percent. Demings noted that the current vaccination rate in Orange County is 43.4 percent. The positivity rate is 8 percent. “These are simple and achievable goals,” he said. Demings mulled over the idea of ending the mask mandates in Orange County, during a press conference earlier this month. “We knew that we would not be in this phase forever where we would be requiring people to needlessly wear facial coverings,” he said. — Alex Galbraith

DeSantis signs executive order overruling all local coronavirus mandates immediately Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last Tuesday issued an executive order immediately overriding all local COVID-19 emergency orders in the state. During a press conference in St. Petersburg, the gover10

nor trotted out his regular talking points about government overreach with regards to the shuttering of businesses and schools in response to the coronavirus pandemic. If he caught the irony of talking about tyrannical government while signing an order that takes away the power of local government to make its own decisions while responding to emergencies, he did not comment on it out loud. “In the state of Florida, we worked very hard … to jettison those types of policies,” he said, of his continued push to undermine lockdowns and COVID-19 related bans. The executive order would override all local mandates responding to COVID-19, starting immediately. A bill giving him the power to override local emergency orders was recently signed into law, but it will not take effect until July 1. DeSantis admitted his new emergency order was a stopgap measure until the law takes effect. “I think that’s the evidence-based thing to do,” DeSantis said. “I think folks that are saying they need to be policing people at this point, if you’re saying that, then you’re really saying you don’t believe in the vaccines.” The new law would give the legislature the ability to overrule a governor’s emergency order. At the same time, it creates a hierarchy through which all emergency orders can be challenged. County officials can wipe out the decisions of mayors and the governor can overrule counties. Given the fact that Republicans have held control of the state legislature for almost 30 years, the move reads like a framework to hamstring any future governors who don’t follow the GOP line. — AG

New Hulu series ‘The Places We Live’ features a tale of the famed Winter Park Boat Tour

In celebration of National Therapy Animal Day, the best boys and girls in all of Orlando have returned to Orlando International Airport after a pandemic-long hiatus. MCO’s Paw Pilots therapy program returned last Friday, much to the delight of … well, everyone. The program was designed to bring comfort to travelers via doggo cuddles and kisses. “It was our hope to bring back the MCO Paw Pilots as soon as it was safe to do so, while the community continues to fight the public health crisis,” said Brian Engle, director of customer experience at the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “We’re so glad the timing feels right to resume this customer service initiative in an updated way that provides enhanced safety measures for the dogs, their handlers and our passengers,” Engle said.

The original Hulu animated series The Places We Live shines a spotlight on “modern folklore about everyday situations and the things we take for granted,” offering lovingly quirky takes on whimsical, heartbreaking (or both) sliceof-life tableaux that we might miss out on during our own daily hustle and bustle. The three episodes by Bernardo Britto cover subjects as disparate as the heart-rending tale of a certain gaggle of geese on a fateful and famous day over the Hudson — and a whimsical look at the Winter Park Boat Tour, through the story of a boat tour operator who tells the same jokes on the same daily maritime jaunts. The six-minute animated short Boat Tour originally screened as part of the 2020 Florida Film Festival. The series The Places We Live can be viewed on Hulu now. — Matthew Moyer

Orlando Magic move into downtown offices, setting up temporary home next to City Hall The Orlando Magic will move their operations into downtown Orlando, temporarily taking up residence in a 23,711-square-foot space next to City Hall on Orange Avenue. The Orlando Business Journal reports the team will move its operations staff out of their office in Maitland at the RDV Sportsplex Athletic Club, taking 200 employees with it. “This opportunity will help improve our overall efficiency as an organization and serve as a bridge leading to the eventual move to the SED development,” Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins shared in a press release about the move. That future home is the long-planned sports & entertainment complex in the shadow of the Amway Center. The $200 million project is expected to include a hotel, seven stories of offices, 100,000 square feet of retail space and a residential community. The project has been in the planning stages for a decade, but the organization hopes to break ground before the end of this year. — AG

‘AN UGLY MESSAGE OF EXCLUSION’ Florida lawmakers ram through anti-trans amendment as clock runs out BY DARA KAM, NSF

ith Democrats decrying the “eleventh-hour” move, the Florida House and Senate last week revived and passed a controversial plan that would ban transgender female athletes from competing on high-school girls’ and college women’s sports teams. The House tucked the transgender athlete proposal into an education measure and sent the revamped bill to the Senate. The Senate signed off on the proposal in a 23-16 vote late Wednesday, with one Republican — Gayle Harrell of Stuart — crossing party lines to join Democrats in opposition to the bill. Under the measure on its way to Gov. Ron DeSantis, female students’ eligibility for sports teams would be based on their “biological sex” on birth certificates issued “at or near the time of the student’s birth.” A stand-alone Senate bill aimed at preventing transgender athletes from competing on girls’ and women’s teams stalled last week. But the issue re-emerged Wednesday as an amendment to the education bill (SB 1028) and quickly passed. The transgender athlete issue has sparked some of the fiercest debates of the 2021 legislative session, with critics arguing that a ban would target youths who are already at risk for suicide, ostracizing and bullying. Sen. Victor Torres, D-Orlando, said he has a transgender granddaughter who has faced numerous obstacles as she matured. He urged his colleagues to oppose the proposed ban Wednesday. “We don’t need to destroy the lives of those children and

their futures. If they want to play, let them play,” he said. “We don’t need this. We thought it was dead. But obviously, some don’t care. And we have to care.” But Senate Appropriations Chairwoman Kelli Stargel, a Lakeland Republican who sponsored the stand-alone bill that stalled, defended the plan Wednesday, saying it is “common knowledge” that men are stronger than women. “It’s not meant to be hurtful. It’s not meant to be discriminating. It’s not meant to attack any group,” Stargel said. “This is not about that. This is about sports and having competitive advantage and having the ability to compete.” Rep. Kaylee Tuck, a Lake Placid Republican who had sponsored a stand-alone House bill on the issue, offered the amendment Wednesday. The action came with just two days left in the 2021 legislative session. Stargel’s previous proposal included an exception for “persons who transition from male to female” if they meet certain conditions, such as specified testosterone levels. But she said Wednesday that such an approach was too complicated. “We decided to go with the most simplistic, which is to say that women play on women’s sports and men are playing on men’s sports. I know it’s unfortunate for the number of students who are transgender, but we’re doing this so that women have the opportunity to participate, to get scholarships, to excel with other women of like strength and capability,” she explained. Through a barrage of questions and a series of futile attempts to alter Tuck’s amendment, House Democrats lashed out at the proposed ban.

“The message that the bill sends is an ugly message of exclusion telling trans kids that who they are is not OK and that they need to change who they are and if they don’t change who they are and something happens to them, it’s their own fault. Members, that is not the message that we should be sending,” Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, an Orlando Democrat who is gay, argued. The proposal drew immediate pushback from LGBTQ advocates. “Republican leadership is hellbent on harming transgender youth and kicking kids off of their soccer teams — and they’ve resorted to making backroom deals to resurrect and pass this bigoted bill in the final hours of legislative session,” Gina Duncan, director of transgender equality for the non-profit organization Equality Florida, said. The bill also includes a provision that would allow “any student who is deprived of an athletic opportunity or suffers any direct or indirect harm” as a result of a violation of the transgender athlete ban to have a private cause of action “for injunctive relief, damages, and any other relief available under law” against a school or public postsecondary institution. The measure also includes a provision aimed at preventing schools from retaliating against students who report that the transgender athlete ban is being violated. Florida is among a number of states where Republican lawmakers have considered legislation to ban transgender girls from participating on girls’ and women’s high-school and college sports teams. West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice signed a similar bill into law on Wednesday. Critics of a ban argued that, if enacted, Florida could lose out on lucrative collegiate championship games. The National Collegiate Athletic Association, the main governing body for college sports, released a statement this month about its affiliation with states considering legislation about transgender student-athlete participation. “When determining where championships are held, NCAA policy directs that only locations where hosts can commit to providing an environment that is safe, healthy and free of discrimination should be selected,” the statement said in part. Tuck’s original proposal would have based eligibility on a student’s “biological sex” — a disputed term that refers to the sex assigned at birth — and included a dispute process to challenge a student’s eligibility. Tuck noted Wednesday that the birth certificate is part of a “pre-eligibility” check conducted by the Florida High School Athletic Association. “There is no longer a dispute process (in the amendment). So the birth certificate is already required in the pre-eligibility check to the FHSAA so there’s not going to be the ability for another student to challenge the biological sex,” she said, calling her amendment a “compromise.” But Smith railed at Tuck, saying the “eleventh-hour” amendment came as a surprise and could create “real harm” for kids. “We are told by the amendment sponsor that the underlying amendment is a compromise,” he said. “It’s a compromise … because we are no longer inspecting the genitals of children in our school. Members, not inspecting children’s genitals is not a compromise. The idea that we were doing it in the first place is absolutely insane, and people should be ashamed of themselves.”

How have you and your family weathered the pandemic? Fortunately, we didn’t catch COVID. Some friends of mine did [but] I didn’t lose anybody to COVID. As a family, it was actually wonderful for all of us. We’ve all lived together — me, my wife, my kid Harley and [my wife’s parents] — since the kid was born. Over the course of the year before the pandemic, we were off shooting Jay and Silent Bob Reboot and I then went on tour, and Harley went off to shoot something. The house was kind of splitting up; Harley was 20 and probably looking at getting her own place sooner or later. Suddenly, the whole family was back together. We all got to hang out together, and we made a TV show while we were doing it. TBS did this game show called Celebrity Show-Off, and they’re like, “We’ll give you a camera and you could do whatever you want.” Most of the people did shows where they talked to the camera and stuff like that. I was like, fuck, man, if we’re gonna put it on TV, I’m gonna make a sitcom! And so we made a little sitcom called Son-In-Lockdown with everybody who lived here. How did the pandemic impact your famously active touring schedule? I would estimate that of my yearly nut, 90 percent of it comes from me being on the road. So in a year we weren’t allowed to be on the road, thank God I had me some savings. Thank God I have Masters of the Universe to work on for Netflix, because animation keeps going. Everyone just goes home, and they work on the artwork from home, and Mark Hamill is in the closet in his house recording voices. We did a lot of driving gigs at the beginning of the quarantine, and then moved mostly online. The online gigs are free but still at least you’re constantly engaged with the audience. How did your stand-up career start? I started in film going. “I’m a filmmaker,” and then one day I realized, “No, you’re the guy that stands on stage and talks about making films; you just happen to make films so

you have some shit to talk about on stage.” Once I came to peace with that — once I realized you’re never gonna be Quentin Tarantino, you don’t want to be Quentin Tarantino, you just need some shit to say to people that changes every year, otherwise you’re saying the same shit — I realized I was part of the act. I learned this early, in 1994. We were showing Clerks at the Houston WorldFest, and we did Q&As afterwards. People loved the Clerks Q&A because I wasn’t erudite, I wasn’t the guy trying to tell you how we made this film. I didn’t come across as a film person, I came across as the audience. I can’t tell you what aspect ratio it’s in, but I can tell you how we got that cat to shit on cue. [After the Q&A] we’re standing behind the door, so the people who are in the auditorium don’t know it’s us, and people are walking. The first two dudes out the door have a conversation that affects the rest of my life, and I don’t even know who these fucks are. I wish I’d chased him down and got a good look at him so I could say, “Dude, you made me the man I am today.” One guy says to the other guy, “What do you think of the movie?” and the other guy goes, “I thought it sucked but the fat guy was funny afterwards.” And right then and there I was like, there you go, I missed him with the movie but I got him by talking about the movie. So I realized early on that’s a second bite at the apple. Most filmmakers just get the movie itself, and if you don’t like it, that’s that, thumbs down. Most filmmakers aren’t like me. I’m a filmmaker [who] comes out and goes, “Wait, before you make your decision, let me tell you how Bruce Willis hated me while I was making this movie and we fought all the time.” For me it’s not like the credits roll and the movie is over. In my world, the experience continues because, now that you’ve watched the flick, let me tell you all the fucking circus acts I had to pull off to make this fucking happen. I directed four episodes of Supergirl and three episodes of Flash. I loved doing it because I love those fucking shows … That being said, I can make more money for one night standing on a stage talking about directing Supergirl for three weeks than I made being on Supergirl for three weeks.

[ arts + culture ] How did the Mooby’s pop-ups happen? Mooby’s came out of nowhere. We thought we’d do it [in Los Angeles] and that would be one month and be done; it wound up going two months. Suddenly we had a franchise, something we can take from place to place, a very easy turnkey operation where you just go to a restaurant that’s willing to cosplay as your Mooby’s: Give them a very limited menu they’re going to work from, bring in a bunch of souvenirs, and you’re off to the races. And so suddenly Jay [Mewes] and I had a way to interact with the audience that wasn’t the standard way of interacting with the audience. Some people ask, “Why do you do so many things?” and No. 1, I do them because they seem interesting to me. I’ll be never be a master of anything, I’ll just be a jack of all trades, master of none, and I’m OK with that. Life is experiential, and I like doing this. What’s your current connection with your home state of New Jersey? Very good. It never ended. I live in California, but I always go back at least once a month, [most] recently for the grand opening of the new Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash [memorabilia store in Redbank]. Jersey is a currency … it gives you this weird biofilm of authenticity, where people just assume off the bat that you mean what you say, that you’re not a poseur. When you grow up in New Jersey, you grow up right next to Manhattan, which is like being fucking Tom Cruise’s little brother. Everybody in the world talks about New York, the world sets its time by Manhattan, Manhattan sets the fucking tone. New Jersey is the easy go-to butt of a joke for every fucking New Yorker … so you already start growing up in New Jersey with a chip on your shoulder because of that. I think that has a lot to do with trying to, like, step out of the shadow of something far greater than yourself. That’s why I kept most of my shits set in Jersey; the comic-book store is in Jersey. Because, as a kid I was always like, why not here? Why do [movies] always talk about Hollywood, New York, why isn’t New Jersey a cool setting? Every time I was at a movie as a kid, and they would reference our home state, I’d go crazy, like “holy shit, they know we exist!” It’s still a big part of me, not even just something I flash like a badge, but it’s deeply in my DNA. What’s the future of theatrical distribution versus streaming services for upcoming independent filmmakers? I think I would always try to get into a theater, because that’s what every moviemaker dreams. They don’t dream, “They’ll watch it on their phone!” To every moviemaker, a movie is an experience, it’s not just the physical product. It’s walking into a theater, the lights go down, all the attention is being paid on the bright center spot on the curtains. It’s romantic, so I think every filmmaker would always want their movie to be picked up by a distributor to play at a movie theater. That being said, like I learned early on, like, that’s expensive. You can go that route, but it’s best to go that route when you’ve got something that is a surefire hit or a franchise. Marvel movies, spend all you want on making it and then spend all you want on marketing it, because

it’s still going to connect in a big bad way. Marketing has always been my hurdle; budget, not so much. Getting the money to make the movies is not that difficult, particularly if you can keep the budget low. You can even provide it yourself, which I’ve done a few times. But marketing a movie, at least back in the day, was always my weakness. We made Clerks II for $5 million, they spent $20 million marketing. Couldn’t we have flipped those fucking figures? I could have paid everybody instead of asking them to do it for next to nothing because we’re friends. I imagine the 2021 version of Kevin Smith that never made Clerks in 1994 would be selling it as an NFT, but I would still probably find a way to put it in a theater, even if it was just for one screen. There’s still a romanticism about being in that room, but who knows how long that romanticism lasts after quarantine. I know a lot of people can’t wait to get back out there, but how many of us are gonna feel completely comfortable enough to suspend disbelief when we all stop to think we’re trapped in a fucking room with a bunch of heavy breathers? Big studios are going to be fine, [but] for the smalltime storytellers it would honestly feel hopeless, except for the fact that most of the storytelling being done on Netflix and Amazon closely resembles the world of indie filmmaking I came from. Most of the challenging material — thoughtful material, stuff that kids coming out of film school would want to be doing — probably [the] best place to go for that is to the streamers. As the original advocate for Ben Affleck playing Batman, what was your take on the Snyder Cut of Justice League? After I watched the Snyder cut I texted [Affleck] to say that it was great … I enjoyed the Snyder Cut a whole fuck-ton, and also felt like it’s a great model for like every other studio. You can give almost any filmmaker a second bite at the apple. You keep it reasonable; we can’t all fucking walk away with $70 million to redo the movie, [but] it’ll cost a nominal amount to reopen a cut and put in the stuff that the filmmaker didn’t the first time around. It just creates more value for a product that they already have that’s just gonna sit there; it’s another way for them to monetize something they already own. In a world where your mom’s watching WandaVision, they’ll be happy to watch bonus features, cut features and extended director cuts.Shit, can we do a Jersey Girl: The Snyder Cut? We do have a completely different cut of that movie where Jennifer [Lopez] is in it a lot more. So I’m all for it; if there could be a Snyder Cut, there could be a Bennifer cut. Why was the ending of Mallrats set in Universal Studios Florida but filmed in Hollywood? I wrote it for Florida, because when you’re raised on the East Coast you don’t think about the West Coast, fucking vacationland to you is Florida. So, it was in the script as Florida. They wouldn’t let us shoot it in Florida, but we could shoot it in Hollywood. I said, “Should I make it Hollywood?” and they’re like, “Who’s gonna care?” It’s one of the few losses in my career that bugged me [and] I blame Universal for that fully … I’m not gonna

say like that I’ve lost sleep over it over the years, but it is something that always bugs me. How have you processed the revelations around Harvey Weinstein, who executive produced many of your films? It’s not like we were ever friends, but he did buy the movie [Clerks], and that changed my life. Suddenly you’re thinking, there’s a monster at the heart of my story. My wonderful little Cinderella story about a kid from New Jersey who makes a movie, then the movie gets picked up and everyone lives happily ever after. But the guy [who] picked it up turns out to be an arch-fucking-criminal. I had dreams — I wanted to make movies. All those women that he either raped or sexually harassed — they also had movie dreams, but I was not made to do anything to make mine come true other than sell him the movie. It made me feel like if I’d known this, if somebody could have told me at the beginning of my career [that] the guy who fucking buys your ticket and puts you on this roller coaster hurts all these people, I just would have said it’s not worth it. I did feel like I had to do something, [and] we still get residual checks for Clerks, Chasing Amy, all the flicks that he was involved in, so I just donate all those to Women in Film going forward. It sucks finding out that somebody you thought highly of was not only someone who didn’t deserve that respect, but also an active fucking felon. That kind of shit will make you really re-evaluate: “What business am I in?” Could the Jay and Silent Bob-branded legal cannabis introduced in California come to Florida or New Jersey? Caviar Mike [Brunson, founder of Caviar Gold] has to partner up with people in all the weed-legal states, and then he brings all the equipment and then teaches them how to make the weed. I know he’s been dealing with folks in Florida, so it could be happening in Florida very, very soon. In New Jersey, they just went weed-legal and it’s gonna take them a minute to figure out the rules … and it’d be nice if we can get one of those licenses. I would partner up with the folks who own Quick Stop, the Toppers, and if we could, open our Jay and Silent Bob weed store at the RST Video location right next to Quick Stop. That’s what we’re building toward right now. What’s the future of your View Askewniverse on film? In Clerks III, Jay and Bob are running their own dispensary out of RST, so if I can make it happen in real life — if you can take reality, turn it into fiction, and then turn the fiction back into reality — at that point, how is it different than necromancy, for heaven’s sakes, different than turning lead into gold? God willing, or SMod willing, we’ll be filming that this summer, and I feel like if we can get Clerks III going, then Twilight of the Mallrats happens even quicker. I had a heart attack a few years ago, so I always feel like I’m living on borrowed time. So more than “how much money can we make?” now I just do things because I’m like, “Well, that’d be fucking cool to do.”

in soy, garlic and ginger, weren’t particularly crispy, but wow, were they incredibly juicy. Which brings me to the unfortunate napkin situation. It seems only cocktail napkins are served here, and that needs to change — using a hundred of these things to wipe up chicken juice was a trying exercise in annoyance. I used more than a few to wipe the slick off my fingers left by the superb fried soft-shell crab ($10 for two). While the crab gave us the crisp we craved, the soft, silky agedashi tofu ($6) offered a contrast. Cutting into the fried cubes was like cutting into light, eggy flan, with the dashi-based sauce serving as a soaking solution, just as caramel does for flan. A thin layer of potato starch lent the tofu a delicate crackle, and the fragility and the proficient manner in which the dish was prepared colored us impressed. The udon noodle soup ($7) comprised an absolutely pristine dashi broth, with large fritters of tempura shrimp ($3 extra) adding crunch. And, yes, traditional sushi is still offered — the yellowtail sushi/sashimi set ($12) makes a perfectly fine lunch. It’s available in tuna and salmon varieties as well. But it’s the donburi that stars at Sushi Kichi, and rightfully so. The prices are beyond reasonable, so if it’s value that you value, do yourself a favor and pay Sushi Kichi a visit. You’ll be doing an independent restaurant a solid too.

The source material for this one is the work of artist Frank Quitely and writer Mark Millar — the latter of whom gave us KickAss. At this point, only Young Life knows more about kids we should all be afraid of. (Netflix) Milestone — This Indian-made drama focuses on a truck driver who realizes that hitting 500,000 miles on his vehicle might not be a cure-all for personal tragedy and job insecurity. I just knew that “blue-collar blueprint” was a sop! (Netflix)

That Damn Michael Che — The trickster god of “Weekend Update” launches a new sketch series that examines what it’s like to be Black in America. LOCAL RELEASES

Few Orlando artists can claim as much raw originality as the inimitable Ray Brazen, undeniably one of most interesting figures in the city’s music scene. Although nothing in art’s freak fringes is out of the question for him, his foray into noise music as Egyptian Pile Cure is an especially intriguing turn. And as usual for Brazen, he’s got a particular take on the form. Unlike the extempore, performancebased vein in much of noise music, Brazen is injecting some clear and express concept into what’s often an opaque genre with EPC’s new recording. Releasing on Friday, May 7, THERE AIN’T NO CURE! is comprised of two sprawling tracks purpose-built around concrete ideas. An American Celebration: When I learned in 2017 that acclaimed folk star Aoife O’Donovan was newly local via marriage to Orlando Philharmonic music director Eric Jacobsen, I immediately dreamed she would be giving us fresh, up-close access on stages around town. Well, apart from a couple of appearances at the Phil’s great Women in Song series, the Grammy-winning artist has sadly kept a low stage profile locally. Thankfully, though, she’ll be featured fairly prominently in this season finale. Besides honoring our nation with selections from American legends like Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland and John Philip Sousa, the program for An American Celebration will see O’Donovan perform four songs including a world premiere of her song cycle “American, Come” to honor the anniversary of the 19th Amendment. “SWITCHED ON” You’ve said that everyone is entitled to a “zone of erotic autonomy.” I was wondering if you think that “zone” extends to sending thousands of dollars to a “FinDom.” I’m a 33-year-old straight woman and I love my husband and we have a great (or so I thought) sex life.
