Were you a fan of the comic growing up? I was! Actually, my introduction to illustrations and everything weird was Ripley’s. When I was a kid, my parents were the maid and groundskeeper to many wealthy people in Westchester, New York. For a few years of my life, we lived in one of these mansions. One day I went looking in the library, hoping to find anything with pictures in it, and lo and behold, I found the first edition of Ripley’s book. I will forever have the memory of opening the yellow book with the marching Chinese men on the cover, and sitting there for hours reading the unbelievable.

Castaño’s self-portrait with pets

HERE COMES A REGULAR Local artist Kieran Castaño takes over historic comic strip The “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!” comic strip has been a beloved staple of newspaper funny pages across the country since 1918. And, “believe it or not” (see what we did there?), the new artist behind this august institution is none other than Orlando artist Kieran Castaño. Castaño is known around these parts for his poignant and oft-political paintings, but his penand-ink illustration style is a perfect fit for bringing the esoteric factoids of Ripley’s to vivid life. Orlando Weekly is proud to be running these strips in our pages starting with this issue (see page 33!), and you can definitely believe that.

What’s one of your favorite subjects covered in the strip thus far? So many good ones to choose from. I’ve kinda turned into that guy that just tells you a random fact about anything when you weren’t even asking for a fun fact, but hey, somebody’s gotta do it. How else are we gonna win at trivia night? I think my favorite will have to be animal facts, especially bat facts. I love bats, so I’ve been lucky enough to draw them about three or four times this year. Did you know that bats French-kiss? Or that the smallest and cutest thing you’ll ever see is the bumblebee bat? Well, now you do. What newspaper comics artists have influenced you? To be honest, I can’t say that a particular newspaper comic comes to mind other than “Peanuts” and “Garfield.” My influences are more from magazines and independent comics. Art Spiegelman’s work for Wacky Packages and Garbage Pail Kids. Justin Green’s Binky Brown. Robert Crumb’s heavily detailed portraits. Any of Daniel Clowes’ work. The many contributors to Mad Magazine. Vintage horror film posters … oh, and I should probably say Robert Ripley! (interview by Matthew Moyer)

Continuing his spurious campaign against “Critical Race Theory” being taught in Florida schools, Gov. Ron DeSantis on April 20 signed HB 7 into law. The bill is intended to limit the way race-related issues can be taught in schools and in workplace training. (Or maybe just to throw red meat to his base.) The law immediately drew a challenge in federal court, with plaintiffs arguing that it violates First Amendment rights. “This case arises from the Florida Legislature and Executive Branch’s efforts to suppress speech in Florida’s schools and workplaces by passing laws that forbid Florida’s teachers and employers from endorsing concepts about race and sex with which Florida’s conservative politicians disagree,” said the lawsuit, filed by attorneys with the Jacksonville firm of Sheppard, White, Kachergus, DeMaggio & Wilkison, P.A. DeSantis said the measure “provides substantive protections” for students and parents. @Nelson Manuel Revisionist tactics to sanitize our turbulent history is a dishonor to our nation. Stop fascism by demanding the truth be told! We’re Americans, not some red snowflakes. @Shelley Hefner I hope he pushes to put bibles back in schools!!! It doesn’t need mass funding and teaches love of all humanity. @David Stevens It’s a nothingburger issue designed to make it look like he’s doing

‘COMIC CON’

something while not actually doing any substantive legislation, just like his fight with Disney. @David Nimal Let’s vote this idiot out. For our 4/20 issue, OW reporter Eric Tegethoff wrote about the myriad obstacles that Black farmers in Florida face in trying to get licensed to grow marijuana by the state’s Department of Health. ”It’s unfair to only have one [license] for the Pigford case and no other exceptions made for other Black farmers who are so far behind everyone else,” Ray Warthen of Zion Farms told the Weekly. “We’re five years behind all the other companies that already are producing medical marijuana.” Amazingly, this is the one story that brought commenters on both sides of the virtual aisle together as one. Kumbaya! @Buddy Fockler When will all of us be granted permission to grow our own cannabis is a better question. @Ben Tucker Probably after they release all the nonviolent black inmates doing time for selling dime bags to make ends meet, so … never? @Orlando Weakly The system is rigged. They just need to legalize it so anyone can grow it. It’s high time (hehe) we get our heads out of our asses and end the stigma on weed.

More Reedy Creek developments, a petition to ban the Bible in schools, Casey Anthony back in the spotlight and other news you may have missed last week. » DeSantis vents pique on Reedy Creek; House of Mouse zips lip Walt Disney Co. has remained relatively silent as lawmakers have debated (and ultimately signed off on the demise of ) their long-held independent government in Reedy Creek. That ended earlier this week with a note to bondholders from the district. Reedy Creek leaders noted that the district could not be dissolved without Florida paying back all of the district’s outstanding debt. In their message, they pointed to the 1967 law creating the special district, which said the state “will not in any way impair the rights or remedies of the holders ... until all such bonds together with interest thereon, and all costs and expenses in connection with any act or proceeding by or on behalf of such holders, are fully met and discharged.” In other words, if Florida wants to get rid of Reedy Creek, it has to pay back all its bondholders first. Since Florida shows no inclination to do that in the immediate future, Disney plans » to continue to operate as if Reedy Creek is a fixture. “In light of the State of Florida’s pledge to the District’s bondholders, Reedy Creek expects to explore its options while continuing its present operations, including levying and collecting its ad valorem taxes and collecting its utility revenues, paying debt service on its ad valorem tax bonds and utility revenue bonds, complying with its bond covenants and operating and maintaining its properties,” they stated. Disney hasn’t said much throughout this tiff with state Republicans. The company initially tried to work behind the scenes to stall a controversial anti-LGBTQ bill. This drew the ire of both sides: The state felt that Disney should mind their business, while LGBTQ employees thought the company didn’t go far enough to protect them. When walkouts were planned, Disney shot out a quick note saying they respect workers’ rights to protest. They also halted all political donations in the state of Florida in the wake of intense scrutiny of their contributions. This relatively tame reaction led the governor to call the company a puppet of the Communist Party of China. State leaders followed that up with a series of laws meant to punish Disney for (barely) speaking out, including the planned dissolution of their special district.

Give the Holy Book the hook?

“Since she got out of jail, she’s kept to herself and people are always talking shit about her,” the friend shared. “Every few months, a story about what she’s doing is published, and [the media] just say whatever you want to say. But now she feels like it’s time for her to set the record straight and say what she needs to say. She wants her voice to be heard.” Anthony’s last public interview was notably standoffish. She maintained her innocence and said that she understood why people viewed her negatively after being fed wave after wave of overheated media coverage. “Based off what was in the media, I understand the reasons people feel about me. I understand why people have the opinions that they do,” she said. “I didn’t do what I was accused of, but I fought for three years. ... Not just for me, but for my daughter.”

Permit rules for guns undone in short run, promises Gov Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday he expects to approve changing Florida gun laws to allow what is known as “constitutional carry,” though it is not clear when that could happen. He didn’t say whether he would add the issue to a special legislative session that will start May 23 on property insurance. But he said he intends to eventually sign such gun legislation. “The one thing that I wanted the Legislature to do, and I think we will do it, I can’t tell you exactly when, but I’m pretty confident that I will be able to sign constitutional carry into law in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said while at an infrastructure-funding event in Williston. Under current law, people who want to carry guns must get concealed weapons permits from the state. “Constitutional carry” would allow people to carry guns without the permits. “The Legislature will get it done. I can’t tell you if it will be next week, six months, but I can tell you that before I am done as governor we will have a signature on that bill,” DeSantis, who is running for re-election this year, added. Alabama and Georgia, both also under Republican governors, enacted forms of constitutional-carry laws in the past two months. As of March 31, Florida had just under 2.5 million concealed-weapons permits issued, according to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which administers the program. news@orlandoweekly.com

A Florida man is attempting to get the Holy Bible removed from school libraries under recently passed laws in the state putting instructional materials and library books under stricter scrutiny. In petitions sent to 63 Florida school districts, Chaz Stevens asked administrators to remove all books that mention the Bible, as well as any copies of the book itself — adding, as is often the case with banned books, “let us lay flame to that giant stack of fiction in a pyre worthy of a Viking.” In the petition, Stevens cites HB 1467, a law passed by Florida Republicans allowing parents and citizens to object to school curricula and instructional materials. Stevens breaks his objection against the Bible into seven points in the letter, a copy of which he shared with Orlando Weekly: “age-appropriateness; smashing babies, killing children; bestiality; rape; wokenness; social-emotional learning; and cannibalism.” He echoed a common point of conservatives, noting that children were free to learn about such things outside of school. “In the end, if Jimmy and Susie are curious about any of the above, they can do what everyone else does — get a room at the Motel Six and grab the Gideons,” he wrote.

Tot mom drops ‘truth’ bomb Infamous Orlando area mom Casey Anthony is hoping to tell her side of the story that made her a household name in a new documentary. At least, that’s the word from People. The gossip magazine spoke with an anonymous source close to the tried-and-exonerated Anthony, who said the former Central Floridian is ready to share what it was like at the center of a media circus. “She’s waited almost 14 years to really talk deeply about her experience,” the source said. “She’s now getting ready to tell her truth. She feels like it’s time.” Anthony has kept a relatively low profile in the years since she was cleared in the murder of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. The toddler’s disappearance led to a nationwide search and the eventual, grim discovery of remains near Anthony’s home. Her trial became a nationwide phenomenon, and she understandably ducked the spotlight once it concluded. Anthony’s associate said she wants to counter some of the information that has been shared about her while she stayed silent. orlandoweekly.com

WHAT A FINE SIGHT Rep. Randy Fine, other Central Florida Republicans compare the House Black Caucus’ hour-long seated protest to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol building BY JIM TURN ER, N SF

H

ouse leaders have remained quiet on calls by some Republicans to punish a group of Democratic lawmakers for a protest last week that led to temporarily suspending activities on the House floor during a special session on redistricting and bills targeting Walt Disney Co. As part of a handful of Republicans who equated the protest to the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, Rep. Blaise Ingoglia of Spring Hill has suggested an investigative committee. Rep. Anthony Sabatini of Howey-in-the-Hills called for arrests. Rep. Randy Fine of Brevard County kept up the pressure, saying in an interview aired Sunday morning on WPLG-TV in Miami that the Democratic protesters should be locked up as felons for a seditious act. “What happened on the floor of the Florida House was far worse than what happened in Washington on January 6,” Fine said. “Constitutional officers, that took an oath to protect the Constitution, attempted to prohibit the Florida Legislature from getting its business done, from actually creating the ability for Florida to send congresspeople to Washington D.C., to the point where we had to pass this Disney bill without a single member getting the opportunity to debate,” Fine continued. “Twenty-one million Floridians were disenfranchised because of sedition on the part of these Democrats. They absolutely broke the law. It’s a second-degree felony what happened. And I do hope there’s accountability for it.” After a suspension of activities that lasted about an hour April 21, the Republican-dominated House returned to the floor and quickly voted to pass a redistricting plan pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the two Disney-related bills.

House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, issued a statement after the session closed, chastising lawmakers “who decided to hijack the legislative process, violating House rules and interfering with the rights of their fellow elected colleagues to debate important legislation.” Otherwise, Sprowls hasn’t suggested punishments. As of Thursday morning, his office hadn’t responded to questions about potential actions that could be taken. The protest included a few Democrats sitting on an image of the state seal in the carpet of the House chamber. Other Democrats gathered around, chanting as they protested the redistricting plan, which, in part, is expected to lead to fewer Black Democrats getting elected to Congress. Rep. Felicia Robinson, a Miami Gardens Democrat who was among the protesters, defended their actions and accused DeSantis of trying to divert attention from the redistricting plan by making a late addition of the Disney issues to the special session. “We were sitting at a press conference about the congressional maps, and the governor decided to bring out his fight with Disney,” Robinson said. “That wasn’t by happenstance. That was a strategy to take up media, to take notice away from the fact … that he was going to cut 50 percent of our [Black] representation.” Robinson added there should be no comparison of the protesters’ actions to the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol. “I want to make sure that everybody knows that we were supposed to be there,” Robinson said. “We all were elected. And we were in the people’s house. And what we were doing and what we did was nothing besides making sure that the people’s voice was heard.”

DeSantis embarrasses himself by taking credit for Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, calling him ‘Elon’ and ‘continuing his campaign’ to move the company to Florida BY J I M T URNER, NSF

G

ov. Ron DeSantis is taking some credit for Twitter’s board accepting a $44 billion acquisition offer from Elon Musk. Meanwhile, the state’s pension fund could get a multimillion-dollar payout from the proposed deal. At a campaign-style event Monday in Spring Hill, DeSantis said that when Musk’s initial takeover attempt stalled, the State Board of Administration, which the governor helps oversee, fired off a letter to Twitter leaders noting that Florida’s pension fund invests in the social-media company. “Last week, they sent a letter to the Board of Directors just saying, ‘Look, Elon Musk is putting a very good offer on the table, and you better have a good business reason why you’re not doing it. Because if it’s for politics, we’re going to hold you accountable,’” DeSantis said. “Well, I’m glad to say that it appears that the Twitter Board of Directors has accepted.” Under the deal’s terms, investors would receive $54.20 for each share of Twitter common stock — once the proposed transaction is closed. Florida’s pension fund holds 934,886 shares. After Musk’s initial attempt to assume control of the company was rebuffed, the Twitter board apparently had a change of mind once Musk showed — through a Securities and Exchange Commission filing — that he had the money, including $25.5 billion in commitments from the likes of Morgan Stanley Senior Funding. Musk, who has a history of blocking critics from his personal Twitter account, said in a statement his goal is to enhance Twitter with new features, “making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots and authenticating all humans.” DeSantis last year spearheaded efforts to pass a law aimed at punishing Twitter and other social-media companies that strip users from platforms or flag users’ posts. The law came after Twitter and Facebook blocked former President Donald Trump from their platforms after the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters. But a federal judge slapped a preliminary injunction on the law, saying it is “riddled with imprecision and ambiguity.” “My hope is that with Elon Musk taking this private, he’s going to open it up and let people be able to speak,” DeSantis said of Twitter’s future. Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, who along with DeSantis and Attorney General Ashley Moody oversee the pension fund and other investments, issued a statement that said Musk’s “acquisition is both a win for free speech and a win for Florida’s pension system.” “With Elon now in full control of the company, I will continue my campaign of attracting Twitter to Florida,” Patronis said, referring to his recent call for Musk to move the company to Florida. news@orlandoweekly.com

ARTISTS LOOK LIKE THIS

With an exhibition of portraits by local photographer Jimm Roberts, Orlando Museum of Art goes hyperlocal — the artist lives just half a mile from the museum BY JESSICA BRYCE YOUNG

I

n 1941, Miami-based photographer Arnold Newman, later to become one of America’s pre-eminent portrait photographers, took his first “environmental portraits”: that is, he packed up his equipment and met his subjects in their natural surroundings rather than having them come to his studio. In 1945, his show Artists Look Like This opened at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, cementing the concept. Jimm Roberts’ idea to shoot 50 Floridian writers and artists is a direct descendant of this exhibition, but one in which the environment is an equal participant. Not only are his subjects quite often shown among the “tools of their trades” — writers posed with pencils, notebooks, typewriters, word processors, bookcases; painters and sculptors posed in their studios and/ or surrounded by their art — but Florida is itself always present, represented by palm fronds or other flora, by jaunty rattan 14

furniture or simply by nova-bright sunlight, straining through a roller shade or pouring in unabashed to brighten a shy writer’s face. Roberts, who lives and works in a peach-painted, pocket-sized Key Westian building (complete with wrought-iron balcony and walled garden) on North Orange Avenue, says: “In 1983, I was surprised to discover how many internationally noted artists, authors, poets and playwrights were then living and working in Florida,” in the afterword of the book Southernmost Art and Literary Portraits, which came out after the original 1989 exhibition and from which much of this OMA exhibition is drawn. “Why had no one ever portrayed the artists and writers of their time who had migrated to this sub-tropic scratch-mark on the globe?” And so Roberts set about doing that, tracking and capturing

orlandoweekly.com

his prizes with the single-mindedness of a birder. Roberts shot and printed portraits of a who’s who of ’80s-’90s arts and letters: legends such as Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Edward Albee and John Knowles; tough guys like Harry Crews, Robert Stone, Charles Willeford and Elmore Leonard; literary prom queens including Ann Beattie, Annie Dillard and Joy Williams; Pop Art wünderkinder Robert Rauschenberg and Roy Lichtenstein. The museum’s curatorial staff enriches this exhibition by including pieces from OMA’s permanent collection made by the artists portrayed in the photos, as well as other ephemera like letters and contact sheets. The inclusions give texture and color to the gallery, creating another way in for viewers for whom the large-format black-and-white photos are too austere. What saves this show from being merely a deck of cultural baseball cards is Roberts’ reverence for his subjects, which illuminates each image. Art is thought to be invariably a product of ego, but Roberts is absent from these images; he often allowed his subjects to choose their settings, their props, patiently waiting for the decisive moment when personality peeped through the carefully groomed version of reality seemingly constructed by each sitter. That moment doesn’t always come — a few of the images are stilted — but when it does, it’s a knockout, as in a close-up of painter Jules Olitski in which a startling, sly intelligence blazes forth. It’s always difficult to observe an observer, anyway; they don’t give much away. As Gertrude Stein pointed out in What Are Masterpieces, “I have always noticed that in portraits of really great writers the mouth is always firmly closed.” jby@orlandoweekly.com

New Generation Theatrical charges into an ambitious 2022-2023 season with Reasons to Be Pretty If you want to hear a positive

story about pandemic-driven pivots in Central Florida culture, just give theater producer Aaron Safer a phone call. He first burst onto the Orlando arts scene more than seven years ago with shows like The Flick and Heathers: The Musical, staging some of the first local productions to use the brand-new Dr. Phillips Center. In the following years, Safer’s for-profit Gen Y Productions was renamed Generation Productions, gained nonprofit status, and eventually evolved into New Generation Theatrical (newgentheatrical.org). Now Safer’s troupe has reinvented itself again as an alternative theatrical company with a bold new mission and brand-new leadership, just in time for the launch of their ambitious 2022-2023 season with this weekend’s opening of Neil Labute’s Reasons to Be Pretty at the Abbey. “We went through iterations to find our DNA, which we have found with New Generation Theatrical,” Safer tells me in an interview ahead of the show’s May 5-8 run. “My passion was actually to make theater more accessible, so the pandemic oddly gave us a way to do that,” through a Facebookbased lunchtime virtual performance series called “Cracking Open a Cold One” conceived by writer-director Michael Knight. Safer says the series “was an opportunity to pay actors and writers and create art, but

Meghan Mitchell and Gregg Baker Jr. in Reasons to Be Pretty | photo courtesy New Generation Theatrical

abide by the pandemic world situation, and it was really cool.” As the pandemic died (or dies) down, Safer says he was prompted to “think about how to take New Generation Theatrical to a place that fulfilled the vision of great theater that is accessible and entertaining and unique, while making sure we properly compensate everyone involved.” He quickly realized he needed more help achieving that aim and recruited a new board of directors composed of Faith Boles, Michael Knight and Nicole Visco. His relationship with Knight goes back to producing his Zombie Island spoof at the 2017 Orlando Fringe, and he’s worked with Visco for most of a decade in both theater and talent management. As for Boles, Safer says this is the first time they’ve ever collaborated professionally, despite knowing each other socially for years. “I sat down with her one day at lunch and I was just like, ‘What do you think about working together on this level?’ And we started talking about what we really want to see in theater,” recalls Safer. “We both want to concentrate on accessibility, and commitment to diversity and inclusion, and supporting artists and actors and creatives,

[so] all of these things just kind of fell into place easily and organically.” A major element of New Generation’s commitment to supporting artists that caught my attention is their promise to pay their cast and crew as W-2 employees (instead of the usual 1099 contractors), providing a $20 minimum hourly wage with workers’ compensation and other benefits. “If we want this professional theater to feel and look professional, then we need to pay people professionally,” says Safer, adding that they plan to engage Actors’ Equity members under the special area contract, handling their salaries directly to save the cost of a union paymaster. “We’re treating our actors like seasonal or temporary employees just like they do at the theme parks, because we want them to view it as a job.” For audiences, Safer says, New Generation is also “trying to create multiple opportunities for not only actors and production members to be involved, but for people to experience our shows.” To that end, ticket prices for all shows start at only $15, thanks to the support of their sponsors and donors. “It’s about making sure of the community’s support, and continuing to properly fund

orlandoweekly.com

future productions so that people continue to get paid.” You can experience New Generation Theatrical’s new approach in person this weekend at the Orlando Repertory Theatre’s black box theater, where Knight will put into practice the company’s new emphasis on immersive productions that treat published plays as if they were original scripts. Safer says the intimacy of the Orlando Rep black box allows them to “tell the story” of Reasons to Be Pretty in a way it hasn’t been as yet in Orlando, adding that Knight (who helmed the controversial Fringe hit Anne Frankenstein) is “really turning it on its head.” “The show’s tagline is ‘a love story about the impossibility of love’ and Michael has kind of taken that and created a commentary on everything from the common perceptions of love to the memes about beauty that you see all over social media,” says Safer. “He’s using the story itself as a way of almost creating a unique narrative, but the unique thing that we’re doing is making sure that the staging and everything really pulls people in. “There is a lot of setting, but there’s not a lot of set. There’s the actors, there’s very unique lighting that you’ll see, and there’s the audience. There’s no wall, and we’re doing our best to eliminate that completely, so that the audience actually feels like they’re sitting next to these characters.” That approach promises to be employed throughout New Generation’s 2022-2023 season, both in the small-scale Show Series and the bigger-budget Production Series. Scheduled titles include Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd at the Mezz, directed by Kenny Howard; a fundraising concert revival of Heathers; Gothic Manor, an original occult comedy written by Knight; Patrick Marber’s Closer; the Kander & Ebb revue And the World Goes ’Round; and Gretchen SuarezPena’s Wingman. “It’s not just about inclusive casting and production members, which we are concentrating on, but we also want to fully embrace those ideals when it comes to what we’re presenting on stage,” says Safer, explaining that the season was built with diversity in mind. “And even if it goes against the norm of what the show would be, it doesn’t matter to us, because that’s not what the norm should be.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com

DREAM THEATER Immersion at London House injects phantasmagorical whimsy into the molecular tasting menu genre BY FAIYAZ KARA

J

ust when you thought the last flashfrozen nail had been hammered into the dehydrated coffin of molecular gastronomy, along comes Rikku Ó’Donnchü to siphon-whip a bit of deathly whimsy into the genre and give it some life. I mean, when was the last time you saw a chef wheel an intravenous drip stand into the dining room? Been a while, right? I suppose if there’s anything a stage at Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck will teach you, it’s that tricking the palate in theatrical

fashion can open the eyes, and Ó’Donnchü revels in theatrics at Immersion. Fun? Yes. Educational? No doubt. Costly? Hell yeah. I’m not exaggerating when I say Immersion’s tasting menu is the priciest in town ($360.50, not including beverage pairings), but there’s also nothing quite like it either. Set aside the restaurant’s air of exclusivity (it’s situated inside the members-only London House, though Immersion is open to non-members), and one can truly appreciate Ó’Donnchü’s ethic. But not without signing a

truffle and a custard tart. Only the “truffle” is choux pastry coated in truffle butter and stuffed with Gruyère, and the custard tart is a savory one made from truffle and miso. And down the rabbit hole we go, indulging in this mad hatter’s feast — 15 courses worth, all of it set to ambient, electropop and goth metal. Not all is smoke and truffles at Immersion, however. There’s some overt messaging in all this seeming madness: namely, Ó’Donnchü’s reflections on provenance, food ethics, sustainability and food waste. It’s local seaweed that wraps koji “ice cream” and golden kaluga caviar in the “Barnacle”; local linecaught snapper and stone crab used in the crudo served inside a shell covered by the crab’s cephalothorax, an eye-catcher by souschef Josh Pfeiffer called “Shell on Earth.” A tableside pour of liquid nitrogen lends additional visuals to the dish and strikingly transforms our table into a foggy morning in San Francisco. Zamulinsky spritzes the

air with an ocean scent as whale sounds and crashing waves pipe through the speakers. Consider us immersed. In a course dubbed “Left Overs,” Ó’Donnchü draws attention to food waste by using the unused bits of “Shell on Earth” to make a roasted bone broth, fish-gut molecular ramen noodles and a fish mousse nugget. He even uses fish pulp to craft a delicate wafer flecked with sesame seeds. In the “Golden Egg,” its gleaming shell shaped by mannitol, the same sweet powder-cum-binding agent Ferran Adrià used to make his famous “peanuts,” Ó’Donnchü stuffs red miso-cured Egyptian goose liver, or “ethical foie gras,” as he calls it. It makes a heavy splat when he drops the egg onto the plate that’s already painted with dollops of cherry and blobs of goose egg yolk. The misocorn croissant was just a bit too heavy for a sopping bread, though. Light and airy like a Bachour wonder this was not. A “cherry” is CONTINUED ON PAGE 23

plucked from the cherry tree in the dining room and added to the plate, but it’s more chicanery. It looks like a cherry, stem and all, but it’s really cherry mousse covered in dark chocolate made to look like a cherry. Several alternative (and sustainable) proteins are showcased: “Open a Can of Worms” has mealworms sitting in a “soil” made from a gochujang emulsion, crispy bits of quinoa and blood sausage, pickled shimeji mushrooms and carrot tops. It’s paired with a cricket tart comprised of a cricket cracker layered with cricket mousse and crowned with a chili-lime cricket. After a serving of Matsusaka A5 wagyu tartare, we’re asked to select a stabbing implement of our choice. Mine looks like some sort of medieval eating spike, which I clumsily use to tear into a beautiful cut of Egyptian goose, a non-native species here in Florida, in a dish called “Winged Pharoah.” It’s glorious, as is the wafer-thin crisp of goose skin draped over the meat. There’s cauliflower laced with curry oil, lavender and sultanas on the plate, but the chou farci, a Brussel sprout stuffed with goose offal, nearly steals the show (which, BTW, goes on for nearly four hours). We’re stuffed, but there’s pani puri topped with Taleggio cheese and platinum osetra caviar. “Where’s the pani?” I ask. Nothing but a sly look from the chef. I bite into the puff and there it is — evaporated “pani” in the form of smoke. Now we’re really stuffed, but next we’re asked to choose between a blue pill or a red pill. We’re in deep now. Yup, The Matrix is invoked in this palate cleanser involving powder-filled capsules, liquid-nitrogen raspberry lollipops “cooked” on an anti-grill and a couple of cloying liquors (the blue with blue Curaçao and the red with some sort of vodka). Then arrives … a skull. Pop off the cranium and a small brain sits inside. It looks real, but it’s beet panna cotta. Ó’Donnchü injects

the brain with a honey-lemon-ginger syrup, wheels in the IV cart and squeezes blood (it’s beet kombucha) onto the noggin to complete the “Blood Clot.” The lights dim and Type O Negative’s “Black No. 1” blares overhead. I can’t help but text some grainy pics to my editor. “This looks like a Viking death sentence, not a nice meal,” she texts back, but I’m having a blast. The fusion beverage pairing ($265 for the table) featuring a selection of cocktails, wines and spirits curated by Zamulinsky keeps things buoyant. And buoyant is the only way to describe Ó’Donnchü’s final revelation. We’re led through the kitchen into a cold, black-tiled room. Smoke from liquid nitrogen rolls over our feet, making it seem we’re in the clouds. Skulls and wooden hands with raised fingers sit on the table, along with a Plexiglas box with an open top. Ó’Donnchü spoons aerated foam into the box and it oingo-boingos about as the sakura-flavored gas inside the box suspends and flavors the foam. Some weird science going on there. The foam is set atop a dessert plate called “Levitate,” comprising a mascarpone and matcha custard-filled donut signifying a bamboo bulb, bamboo “leaves” made from bamboo ice cream, and sakura espuma stuffed inside a piece of bamboo. Only it’s not bamboo — it’s a white chocolate shell shaped and colored to look like bamboo. The point of the dish is to draw attention to the highly invasive plant and how it can be used in cooking. We take it back to our seats and just stare at it for a while, glutted and entranced. From his days at Gåte in South Africa to Amorette in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Ó’Donnchü has told his story, one rooted in science and facts, but narrated in a nontraditional manner. And it’s one helluva story. A real page-turner. When we climbed out of the hole, mouths coated with the woodsy essence of bamboo, it dawned on us that here at Rikku’s Believe It Or Not, the medium is the message. fkara@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

[ film + tv ] PREMIERES FRIDAY: The Big Conn — “Perpetrator of the largest Social Security theft in history” is the superlative history will always associate with Kentucky lawyer Eric C. Conn, here profiled in four documentary episodes that show how he swindled the United States government out of more than half a billion dollars. He’s in prison now, which shows what happens when you make bad decisions: If he had gone after Medicare instead, he could have ended up serving two terms as a Southern governor. (Apple TV+) Bosch: Legacy — Titus Welliver’s Harry Bosch returns in a spinoff series that finds the character off the police force and working as a private investigator. His first assignment is to help an ailing billionaire (William Devane) find out if he has an heir who can inherit his fortune. “I can be that heir, no problem!” volunteers every single cast member from The Circle. (Amazon Freevee) Hatching — Finnish body horror, with a 12-year-old girl raising a second version of herself from an egg she finds in the woods. (And just like that, I think the medium of streaming has discovered its next onscreen prompt. “Finnish body horror?” “No, save for later, thanks.”) (Hulu)

ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss by Steve Schneider PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: The Circle — Netflix is promising Season 4 will be the “spiciest” yet as would-be influencers once again try to catfish one another for money and popularity. Given that last season permitted eliminated players to return under alternate identities, “spicy” clearly means “behavior that would get your account deleted in the real world.” Maybe somebody’s going to set up an OnlyFans with pictures of their dental hygienist? (Netflix) El Marginal — The fifth and final season of the Argentine prison drama will depict a jailhouse alliance between gangsters and religious types that involves the extracting of “tithes” from helpless convicts. Scoff if you must, but how else is Paula White going to know God loves her? (Netflix) Meltdown: Three Mile Island — In four documentary episodes, learn how the Harrisburg nuclear crisis of 1979 came to pass, and how close we came to not knowing anything about it. You know, just like the Bayonne Toxic Waste Disaster of 1981. What? You’ve never heard of the Bayonne Toxic Waste Disaster of 1981? (Netflix) Summertime — Wrapping up after three seasons is this Italian-made YA romance that’s been following the summer courtship of a former motorcycle racer and a shy hotel worker. If you ask me, wringing three whole seasons out of a story that by definition has to end by September is nice work if you can get it. Keep your eyes peeled for a potential spinoff series, Uncommonly Warm Fall We’re Having, Isn’t It? (Netflix)

PREMIERES THURSDAY: Clark — Bill Skarsgård plays a debonair criminal who was known as “Sweden’s answer to John Dillinger,” in a drama series that seemingly exists just to answer the question “What’s even more fun than Abba and universal healthcare?” I bet a Danish Babyface Nelson could clean up at the Eurovision Song Contest. (Netflix) Girls5Eva — Season 2 finds Paula Pell’s Gloria shrugging off a debilitating knee injury to participate in a big promotional

campaign for her group’s comeback album. The magic bullet: as many painkillers as Mariah Carey takes when she isn’t shrugging off a debilitating knee injury. (Peacock) The Pentaverate — Playing off a plot point from So I Married an Axe Murderer, Mike Myers presents a six-episode miniseries about a shadowy cabal that secretly runs the world. Myers appears as eight different characters, including a former music manager named “Shep Gordon” — presumably the real Shep Gordon, whom Myers profiled in a 2013 documentary. Talk about making your past work for you. If there are any nods to The Love Guru, will anybody but Myers notice? (Netflix) The Staircase — Eighteen years ago, the case of crime novelist turned convicted wife murderer Michael Peterson was the subject of a hugely popular docuseries. Now that show has been remade as a serialized dramatization starring Colin Firth and Toni Collette — and Peterson himself is back on the streets, his guilty verdict having been reduced to manslaughter. Prediction: The next iteration of the tale will be a cartoon for preschoolers called Little Mike, by which time Peterson will have won damages from the high-school health teacher who taught him faulty CPR. (HBO Max) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — The latest installment in the franchise shows us where the starship Enterprise boldly went back when Christopher Pike was still its captain. From the original series, we know those days ended with an unfortunate exposure to delta rays and Pike becoming a mute zombie in a rolling sauna. But for now, enjoy those innocent years when he could answer a yes-or-no question without proposing to a Roomba. (Paramount+) Wild Babies — The birthing and parenting rituals of animals from 17 different countries are the subject of this four-episode docuseries narrated by Helena Bonham Carter. And as a helpful FYI, she’ll reveal which of the critters are the easiest to bake into pies. (Netflix)

LOL: Last One Laughing Mexico — “Doubling up” is the theme of Season 4, with comedians now competing in pairs and host Eugenio Derbez sharing his duties with his son, José Eduardo. Also, the million-peso grand prize no longer goes to the winning comic(s), but to a charity of their choice. “I can be that charity, no problem!” Hey, shut up, entire cast of The Circle. (Amazon Prime) Marmaduke — The comic-strip pooch stars in his own CGIanimated romp, with his voice provided by none other than Pete Davidson. But apparently, the casting hasn’t filled Netflix with confidence, because Davidson speaks not a single syllable in the trailer that’s been released. Sucks to be you, Skete! Guess you should have taken that cameo on The Kardashians when Kim wanted to put it in your prenup. (Netflix) The Sound of Magic — Korea sends us a musical fantasy about a girl whose wish to grow up quicker brings her into the orbit of a magician living in an abandoned theme park. “An abandoned theme park, you say? I’m listening!” — R. DeSantis. (Netflix) The Takedown — Mismatched cops Diakité and Monge are back in Louis Letterier’s sequel to the 2012 French buddy flick On the Other Side of the Tracks. The big comedic twist is that the Black guy has since been promoted over the white guy, which should be positively hilarious and not in any way exploitative of wider cultural resentments. Either way, I’m sure Marine Le Pen will be giving us her reaction in detail, since she has so much free time now and stuff. (Netflix) The Twin — In what holds the potential to be a sort of sideways Don’t Look Now, parents who are grieving the loss of one of their sons learn that he may be trying to contact his twin brother from beyond the grave. Five’ll get you 10 he’s only trying to find out the kid’s Minecraft password, because it’s gotta be pretty boring on the other side of that veil. (Shudder) The Unsolved Murder of Beverly Lynn Smith — The docuseries format provides a platform to reopen the case of Ontario native Smith, who was found dead in her farmhouse 48 years ago. The coroner’s biggest challenge: determining that she was actually deceased and not merely Canadian. (Amazon Prime) The Wilds — In Season 2, the eight teenage girls who have been stranded on a deserted island find new ways to pull together and avoid going all Lord of the Flies on one another. In the case of Toni and Shelby, that means exploring a deepening same-sex romance. So if you’re keeping score at home, that’s lords 0, flies 2. (Amazon Prime)

TALES FROM THE CRYPT Jon Padgett narrates Thomas Ligotti’s nightmares in ‘Gas Station Carnivals’ BY TYLER BARNEY

Mesmerized by tales which were “like nothing else [he’d] homas Ligotti has a special plan for this world. most about the site is “the idea of people who appreciate [my] horror stories talking about stuff that has nothing to do with [my] horror stories.” Little did Padgett know the role his site would play in the master plan. After sending Ligotti an email he never thought would be answered, he was pleasantly surprised to receive a reply within hours. “[Ligotti] wrote back this long, generous email saying he had actually been following my work trying to promote his writing online.” The two quickly bonded and have corresponded regularly ever since. “I consider Tom my closest, best friend,” Padgett says, “as well as my authorial mentor.” In the beginning of their friendship, Padgett proposed the idea of publishing a deluxe collection of Ligotti’s work. “Then he told me how much money a book would cost to make, and I realized I was utterly incapable of such a thing.” Still, Padgett says, “these early ideas planted a seed.” As a grad student in the ’90s, he recorded himself narrating Ligotti’s stories on tape so he could listen to them in his car — certainly a safer alternative to reading while driving. Padgett later sent the tapes to Ligotti, who was “always very praising and grateful for [them]” and “extremely supportive of [his] voice-over work.” He recalls one story in particular which Ligotti always considered to be “a complete failure” until he heard Padgett read it aloud. “He told me it was like a different story, and a successful one. It changed the way he thought about that story completely, and that to me was the ultimate compliment.” In 2015, a musician and visual artist named Jonathan Dennison approached Ligotti about recording a story for his newly founded “spoken arts” label, Cadabra Records. Ligotti responded with a link to a podcast episode in which Padgett read his own recently published story, “20 Simple Steps to Ventriloquism,” and the rest became history. Released on vinyl in 2018, The Bungalow House — the first of Cadabra’s (so far) seven Ligotti albums, all read by Padgett and scored by composer Chris Bozzone — turned out to be “a beautiful, artistic success from top to bottom.” A few months later, 20 Simple Steps to Ventriloquism also received the vinyl treatment from Cadabra, complete with a foreword from Ligotti. That same year, Padgett launched Vastarien — a literary journal named after the final story in Songs of a Dead Dreamer — through his publishing imprint, Grimscribe Press, which takes its name from Ligotti’s second story collection. Ligotti also had a noteworthy 2015, becoming one of 10 living authors included in the Penguin Classics series when Songs and Grimscribe were published together in a singlevolume edition. The latest chapter in Ligotti’s legacy — which includes, in addition to the aforementioned titles, the short fiction collections Noctuary, The Nightmare Factory and Teatro Grottesco, as well as the highly acclaimed nonfiction work The Conspiracy Against the Human Race — took the form of a limited-edition chapbook entitled Paradoxes From Hell. Published by Cadabra’s literary offshoot, Chiroptera Press, the collection rescued from obscurity two out-of-print poems and the titular short story — all of which have been revised by Ligotti for a hand-numbered edition featuring Dennison’s illustrations. To commemorate the chapbook’s release, Jon Padgett will join musician Chris Bozzone for a live performance of both poems — “I Have a Special Plan for This World” and “This Degenerate Little Town” — and the stories “Gas Station Carnivals” and “The Red Tower.” The one-off event, dubbed “Gas Station Carnivals,” visits the Abbey this Saturday for an evening of “art-magic” guaranteed to fuel your nightmares. Plan accordingly.

With all the stirrings happening at the West End Trading Co., the Sanford scene is about to get a pretty notable boost. The longtime Sanford live-music pillar is currently working on a spate of significant upgrades that will expand the venue by 50 percent (to a 450-capacity space), enhance the stage, open up the courtyard and add the new bar Wild Wild West End Honky Tonk Bar on the other end. According to the venue’s new booker and events manager, Dom Maresco — best known as the drummer for the Supervillains — the enhancements will be ready by West End’s big annual Hurricane Party on May 28. This year’s lineup, by the way, will be especially loaded with headliners like Less Than Jake, Passafire, the Aggrolites and Authority Zero’s Jason DeVore, alongside dozens of well-known area acts. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z tells us, “Don’t ever go with the flow. Instead, be the flow.” Here’s what I think he means: If we go with the flow, we adjust and accommodate ourselves to a force that is not necessarily aligned with our personal inclinations and needs. To go with the flow implies we are surrendering our autonomy. To claim our full sovereignty, on the other hand, we are wise to be the flow. We should create our own flow, which is just right for our unique inclinations and needs. I think this is the right approach for you right now, Taurus. Be the flow. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The Italian language used to be a dialect spoken in Tuscany. That area comprises less than 8 percent of the country’s territory. How did such a dramatic evolution happen? Why did a local dialect supersede dialects like Piedmontese, Neapolitan, Sicilian and others? In part, it was because three potent 14th-century writers wrote in the Tuscan dialect: Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarch and Giovanni Boccaccio. Another reason: Because Tuscany is centrally located in Italy, its dialect was less influenced by languages in France and other nearby countries. I offer this as a metaphor for you in the coming months. One of your personal talents, affiliations or inclinations could become more influential and widespread — and have more authority in your life. CANCER (June 21-July 22): “Always strive to be more interested than interesting,” said actor and activist Jane Fonda. That may not be easy for you to accomplish in the near future, dear Cancerian. Your curiosity will be at peak levels, but you may also be extra compelling and captivating. So I’ll amend Fonda’s advice: Give yourself permission to be both as interested and as interesting as you can imagine. Entertain the world with your lively personality as you go in quest of new information, fresh perceptions and unprecedented experiences. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “When in doubt, act like God,” proclaimed Leo singersongwriter Madonna. I wouldn’t usually endorse that advice. But I’ll make an exception for you Leos during the next three weeks. Due to a divine configuration of astrological omens, you are authorized to ascend to new heights of sovereignty and self-possession — even to the point of doing a vivid God impersonation. For best results, don’t choose an angry, jealous, tyrannical deity to be your role model. Pattern yourself after a sweeter, funnier, more intimate type of celestial being. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): My Virgo friend Amanda told me she felt tight and

overwrought. She was overthinking and on the verge of a meltdown. With a rueful sigh, she added, “I adore anything that helps me decompress, unwind, simmer down, stop worrying, lighten up, compose myself and mellow out.” So I invited her to take deep breaths, close her eyes and visualize herself immersed in blue-green light. Then I asked her to name influences she loved: people, animals, natural places, music, books, films, art and physical movements that made her feel happy to be alive. She came up with eight different sources of bliss, and together we meditated on them. Half an hour later, she was as relaxed as she had been in months. I recommend you try a comparable exercise every day for the next 14 days. Be proactive about cultivating tranquil delight. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Author Anne Lamott is renowned for her tender approach to expressing her struggles with addiction, depression and other tribulations. One of her supreme tests was being a single mother. In this effort, she was her usual plucky self. Anytime she hosted playdates with her son Sam’s young friends at her home, she called on the help of crayons and paint and pens and clay and scissors. “When we did art with the kids, the demons would lie down,” she testified. I recommend a comparable strategy for you in the coming days, Libra. You will have extra power as you tame, calm or transform your demons. Making art could be effective, as well as any task that spurs your creativity and imagination. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “My heart has developed a kind of amnesia, where it remembers everything but itself,” writes Scorpio poet Sabrina Benaim. If you suffer a condition that resembles hers, it’s about to change. According to my astrological analysis, your heart will soon not only remember everything; it will also remember itself. What a blissful homecoming that will be — although it may also be unruly and confounding, at least in the beginning. But after the initial surprise calms down, you will celebrate a dramatic enhancement of emotionally rich self-knowledge. You will feel united with the source of your longing to love and be loved. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “Just because things hadn’t gone the way I had planned didn’t necessarily mean they had gone wrong,” writes Sagittarian author Ann Patchett. Her thought may be helpful for you to meditate on. My guess is that you will ultimately be glad that things didn’t go the way you planned. God or your Higher Self or the Mysterious Forces of Destiny will conspire to lead you away from limited expectations or not-bigenough visions so as to offer you bigger and better blessings.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Novelist Jane Austen (1775–1817) confessed she was a “wild beast.” Really? The author who wrote masterfully about the complex social lives of wealthy British people? Here’s my theory: The wild beast in her made her original, unsentimental, humorous and brilliant in creating her stories. How is your own inner wild beast, Capricorn? According to my reading of the astrological omens, now is an excellent time to give it fun, rich assignments. What parts of your life would benefit from tapping into raw, primal energy?

Meet Gambit!

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Aquarian poet Jack Gilbert wrote, “I lie in the dark wondering if this quiet in me now is a beginning or an end.” I don’t know how Gilbert solved his dilemma. But I suspect you will soon be inclined to pose a similar question. In your case, the answer will be that the quiet in you is a beginning. Ah! But in the early going, it may not resemble a beginning. You might be puzzled by its fuzzy, meandering quality. But sooner or later, the quiet in you will become fertile and inspirational. You will ride it to the next chapter of your life story.

Gambit (A360753) definitely

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The genre of poetry known as haiku often relies on unexpected juxtapositions. Critic R.H. Blyth observed, “In haiku, the two entirely different things that are joined in sameness are poetry and sensation, spirit and matter.” I suspect your life in the coming weeks will have metaphorical resemblances to haikus. You will be skilled at blending elements that aren’t often combined, or that should be blended but haven’t been. For inspiration, read these haikus by Raymond Roseliep. No. 1: “in the stream / stones making half / the music.” No. 2: “horizon / wild swan drifting through / the woman’s body.” No. 3: “birthcry! / the stars / are all in place.” No. 4: “bathwater / down the drain / some of me.” No. 5: “grass / holding the shape / of our night.” No. 6: “campfire extinguished, / the woman washing dishes / in a pan of stars.”

knows how to smile for the camera. This handsome 5-year-old boy is looking for a new home. Gambit was here in 2016 as a pup and now he’s back, since his owners were having a baby and the person they gave him to lost their home. He’s been passed from place to place, so we hope his next home will be permanent. He’s more focused on toys than on and he has been making amazing progress with “fetch” and “drop it.” Gambit especially loves frisbees and already knows “sit” on command. He is housebroken and good with dogs and cats, but he doesn’t like the ones who jump on him, especially near his hind end. Spring is the season of new beginnings. OCAS wants adopters to spring into love and adopt an animal that will shower them with affection. We’re hoping that these animals will bloom in their new homes (see what we did there?). If you’ve been trying

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Poet Jennifer Willoughby writes, “I am so busy. I am practicing my new hobby of watching me become someone else. There is so much violence in reconstruction. Every minute is grisly, but I have to participate. I am building what I cannot break.” I wouldn’t describe your own reconstruction process during recent months as “violent” or “grisly,” Aries, but it has been strenuous and demanding. The good news is that you have mostly completed the most demanding work. Soon the process will become more fun. Congratulations on creating an unbreakable new version of yourself! orlandoweekly.com

“QUICKIES” I’m a heavy sleeper, and my wife knows that, but not so heavy that I don’t wake up when she periodically masturbates next to me and has the bed shaking pretty hard. She doesn’t know this wakes me. How do I handle this? Do I offer a hand (or a dick) the next time? Talk to her when she’s not having her moment and ask if she feels like our sex life is lacking? Or just let it go and continue to pretend that I’m still asleep when this happens? Our sex life seems healthy to me otherwise. Nocturnal Incidents That Erupt Necessitate Inquiries To Elucidate The wife masturbating in the middle isn’t by itself evidence your sex life is lacking, NITENITE. She’s most likely waking up horny at 3 a.m. and rubbing one out to get back to sleep. You can and should tell her over breakfast — with a loving and supportive smile on your face — that you sometimes wake up when she’s masturbating, and that you’re happy to help her out. But if all your wife wants and/or needs at 3 a.m. is a quick orgasm, she may not be interested in a full-blown sex session. And if “helping her out” means she’s obligated to get you off before she can go back to sleep, NITENITE, don’t be surprised if she passes (and slips out of bed the next time she needs to have a wank). Gay man here with a question about topping. I was a top with my college boyfriend but switched to being mostly a bottom in my early 20s. I’m in my late 30s now, and recently got out of a decade-long relationship, so I’ve been doing a lot of exploring and rediscovering what I want in bed. While I’m very experienced as a bottom, I feel a bit like a fish out of water when I’m topping. The guys I’ve fucked have all been very complimentary, so it doesn’t seem to be a problem with my technique, but it’s just not as intense for me. Also, I’m uncut and I find that if I’m pushing deep inside someone then my foreskin pulls all the way back while I’m inside

to the point that it hurts. (This is especially a problem when a guy rides me.) I’m with a new boyfriend who has enjoyed bottoming for me, but all of this is kind of playing with my head so I can’t just relax and enjoy myself when topping. Should I just accept that topping isn’t for me? Subpar Orgasms From Topping You could accept that topping isn’t for you and swear off topping forever … but that seems a little dramatic, SOFT, and a whole lot drastic. How about accepting this instead: While you prefer bottoming to topping and your orgasms are better when you bottom, you also enjoy topping occasionally, so long as you don’t push too far in and/or get ridden too hard. You might also wanna accept the compliments you’ve been getting about your topping skills/style. Instead of assuming the guys you’ve topped are lying to you, give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they’re telling the truth: You’re a good top and bottoming for you is a good time. And with more experience, SOFT, you’re likelier to get even better at it, earn more praise, and grow to enjoy topping more. I am a 60-year-old woman who has had a lot of lovers. My current lover does not enjoy cunnilingus, which happens to be the only reliable way to get me off. How can I make cunnilingus more enjoyable for him? I thought about getting a can of whipped cream to “sweeten the deal,” but will that work? Exciting Additives That Make Eating Pussy A Lark It won’t work. First, putting whipped cream on your clit and labia isn’t good for pussy — and since whipped cream rapidly melts after being applied to the body, EATMEPAL, it’s not going to look sexy or taste good for long. Minutes after emptying that can of whipped cream, you’re gonna

look and smell like a newborn puked on your lap. Chocolate sauce, flavored lubes, whipped cream — none of those things have the power to turn someone who doesn’t like eating pussy or sucking dick into someone who does. Pussy is not a sundae, dick is not a candy bar. If cunnilingus is the only thing that reliably gets you off, it’s a new lover you need, EATMEPAL, not a dairy product. I’m a man who is curious about wearing a male chastity cage. I’m on blood-thinning medications and I very rarely get erections due to my health issues, but I want to experience the feeling of wearing a cage. Are there any long-term effects from wearing a cock cage for short periods of time that I need to know about? I am just curious how it would feel wearing one. Looking Into Mysterious Pleasures You’ll be fine, LIMP. I’ve spoken to a few urologists over the years about the risks of chastity cages for men, and their only concern was potential damage to the erectile tissues when a dick gets hard (or tries to) in the confines of a cage. If you rarely get hard — or don’t get hard randomly — there’s no danger in wearing one even for extended periods of time, so long as it’s not too tight, LIMP, and you keep it clean. I’m a 20-year-old woman who just started a new job. One of my new co-workers is a 20-something man who doesn’t speak much English, but he’s made it very clear that he’s attracted to me. I found him on Facebook and realized he has a girlfriend in another country. So, as it turns out, he’s in a three-year-long relationship, but he can’t be with her currently. I’ve always considered men in relationships to be strictly “off limits,” but I’ve got an intense crush on this man and wanna get with him. I’m only interested in hooking up. I’m not looking for a commitment from him at all. Should I let

orlandoweekly.com

him know I am attracted to him too and possibly ruin his relationship? Possible Wrecking Ball Unless you’re planning to post to Facebook about fucking this guy and tag his girlfriend back home, I don’t see how fucking you — even if he’s not supposed to be fucking anyone while they’re apart — will automatically ruin his relationship. Here’s hoping he’s allowed to fuck other women while they’re separated like this, PWB, and here’s hoping she’s allowed to fuck other guys. But even if he were to break the rules to get with you, PWB, it doesn’t mean that he would break her heart … so long as you’re capable of being discreet. I learned that you helped pegging get its name. But is there a name for a man using a strap-on on a woman? Strapped On Dude In 2001 my readers decided — in a free and fair election — to give the name “pegging” to the act of a woman fucking a man in the ass with a strap-on dildo. Some pegging purists have argued that the word should continue to mean that and only that, but language evolves and changes. These days women peg men, men peg women, women peg women, men peg men, and enbys peg all comers. Is it OK to get a quick “happy ending” massage once a month if you are getting almost no sex in the marriage? Re-evaluating Understood Boundaries It’s OK with me, RUB.
