IN MEMORIAM: THE ORLANDO 49 Every week between now and the one-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shootings, Orlando Weekly will profile a person killed on June 12, 2016. This week: Tevin Eugene Crosby
As the New Year was about to begin, Tevin Eugene Crosby was so excited he posted a Facebook status saying, “2016 will be the best year ever.” The 25-year-old from Statesville, North Carolina, had recently moved to Michigan to start a marketing business called Total Entrepreneurs Concepts. He tried to keep his team passionate with inspirational quotes on hard work as well as bowling nights and leadership awards. Shenetra Harris says her brother had traveled back to North Carolina on June 9 as a surprise to spend time with his family and attend her son’s and daughter’s elementary school graduations. The family

then went to Greensboro to celebrate, and Crosby danced and cooked shrimp kebabs for everybody. Harris says her brother liked to cook seafood and Latin American cuisine. “He was really close to my kids from the day they’ve been born,” she says. “Tevin has always been there and he wouldn’t miss a party for nothing, even if he was far away from home.” Crosby then went to Orlando to visit friends. On June 12, he and Richard Aiken went out for a night of fun at the gay nightclub Pulse. During the mass shooting, Aiken and Crosby were trapped in the bathrooms. Aiken made it out alive, but Crosby and 48 other people were killed in the club. “Happy Birthday to my best friend TevinAKA-Meche,” Aiken wrote on Facebook on what would have been Crosby’s 26th birthday. “This same weekend last year we were in Miami having a blast. I miss you man.” Harris, the oldest of three children, still remembers her brother coming home from school upset that he’d gotten a B. He always loved to excel, whether it was on the honor roll or later in life by going after new business ventures. “My brother was full of light, full of energy,” she says. “He just always went for everything he wanted in life. Tevin was also a really sweet, really loving person who was always there for you just to talk. It still don’t seem real.”

Mental health organization still needs funding for Pulse counseling:
The Mental Health Association of Central Florida has provided counseling services to more than 90 survivors, victims’ family members and others affected by the Pulse tragedy. But that service is paid by a limited amount of funds that is running out, says Candy Crawford, the association’s CEO. The nonprofit has gotten $1,500 from the Better Together Fund for support groups and $50,000 each from actress Glenn Close and the Humana Foundation to fund the program. Much of it has gone to paying 40 counselors under contract with the organization and a coordinator that connects people with counselors. For Crawford, it’s not an option to allow the Pulse counseling program to end. She says, “We have a lot of resources to go after. We’re not going to give up.”

Judge asks Christina Grimmie’s family for amended complaint:
An Orange County judge is asking the family of the late Christina Grimmie to file an amended complaint after dismissing their original lawsuit against the owners of the Orlando venue where The Voice singer was killed last year. Grimmie, 22, was fatally shot three times after her performance on June 10, 2016, at the Plaza Live. Shooter Kevin Loibl passed through security carrying two handguns and a hunting knife. Last year, Grimmie’s family sued tour promoter AEG Live and venue owner Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Plaza Foundation for failing to take adequate security measures.

Orlando’s Haitian community calls on Trump to keep his promise:
As they stood in front of Universal Studios in Orlando this week, about 100 people from the local Haitian community chanted a message for President Donald Trump: “Keep your promise.” Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly decided to extend for six more months the temporary protected status given to more than 58,000 Haitians. But Kelly also signaled the end of the program, saying the six-month extension allows Haitian TPS recipients to obtain travel documents and make arrangements for their ultimate departure. Haitian faith leaders and hospitality union workers protested the decision, saying it leaves them living in fear of deportation. During the 2016 campaign, Trump stopped in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood and said he wanted to be the community’s “greatest champion.”

And it shows a man, and an administration, utterly devoid of empathy for the disadvantaged. Over the next decade, his proposal slashes $193 billion from food stamps, $72 billion from Social Security disability insurance, $21 billion from supplemental security income, $23 billion from the earned income tax credit, $53 billion from unemployment insurance, $22 billion from the temporary assistance for needy families program and $622 billion from Medicaid (it’s unclear whether this would be on top of the $884 billion the AHCA seeks to cut from Medicaid). Next year, he also proposes cutting nearly 20 percent from the Children’s Health Insurance Program. In addition, the budget seeks to change the way lower-income students finance their loans and cancels a student-loan-forgiveness program, saving the government $143 billion over 10 years. All of these programs are meant to help people down on their luck. But Trump doesn’t stop there. He also proposes cutting the National Institutes of Health’s budget by 18 percent, the National Science Foundation’s budget by 11 percent and the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget by more than 30 percent, crippling the EPA’s ability to fight climate change. Here again, all of this is done to facilitate a tax cut for the wealthy. How much is unclear, because the Trump administration has provided few details, other than to say that it wants to reduce the top income tax rate from 39.6 percent to 35 percent, eliminate the estate tax and dramatically lower the corporate tax rate. The rich will make out like bandits. The poor will suffer. alifornian artist Patrick Martinez makes memorials that speak to both personal and political grief. with the bed of bougainvillea growing across it.’ I deal with headlines and the overlooked.” American Memorial, currently hanging at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Winter Park’s Rollins College, includes works in a wide variety of media – from the titular piece, a stucco sculpture reminiscent of a memorial shrine, to “25 and Still Alive,” a series of portraits of personal friends of the artist, all survivors of street violence, rendered in the style of photo-printed sheet cakes. The cakes are celebrations of survival, with the grim subtext of the ubiquity of violence in the United States. In an interview with Cornell Fine Arts 12
Museum curator Amy Galpin, Martinez said, “The cakes represent another year of life and celebrating that. The people I paint on these cakes have been involved in street violence, have had brushes with death and are not supposed to be here. I think the pieces represent a large amount of how our youth is living and dying here in America.” Martinez says he draws from a color palette inspired by the visual identities of the city of Los Angeles – “the pinks, the garlands of memorial flowers, the partially erased tagging, and trying to distill something essential and lasting from it” – viewed from the perspective of his diverse heritage (Filipino, Mexican and Native

American). “LA Still Life,” a sculptural work on panel, is a material homage to Los Angeles architectural vernacular, combining flowers, stucco, neon and ceramic. “All American Class of 2016” and “Po-Lice Misconduct” are contemporary pastiche pieces referencing Pee-Chee folders (a ubiquitous American school stationery item in the latter half of the 20th century); the archetypal football player and high school cheerleader illustrations typically adorning the folders are replaced with Martinez’s renderings of scenes of police brutality and memorializing of its victims, including Laquan McDonald and Eric Garner. Martinez recollects using the folders during grade school, and describes how the representations of American life on the folders alienated him. “All-American scenes of happy student athletes that I believe originated in the 1960s … even though it’s just a folder, it sets a template of expected behavior. It’s a constant reminder of someone’s idea of the norm, and it certainly didn’t relate much to mine.” The exhibition is bathed in the glow of neon light emanating from “Then They
Came for Me” and “Free 99 (hold ya head),” neon text pieces referencing hip-hop lyrics and retail signage. The works are familiar in their visual congruency with the ubiquitous neon signs that advertise businesses open late, ATMs and check cashing, but jarring in their unexpected placement of recognizable language. Martinez describes how the format echoes those commonplace signs: “The words in the middle, with a rectangle around it, backed with black plastic. The aesthetic wasn’t trying to be sexy or pleasurable; it was more desperate and focus-driven to get across the point of the business.” In our current political milieu of xenophobia, scapegoating particular communities, the phrase “Then They Came for Me” is a terrifying echo of the rise of Nazism in 1930s Germany. In their eerie neon glow, these words warn us of the dangers of fascism and implicate public apathy in the urgency of their presence. Through these works, Martinez distills our contemporary political and social landscape. The artist, in dialogue with the visual cultures of Los Angeles (his home) and our current era of violence, offers us experiences of grief, jubilance and quiet reverence in his awareness of the historical weight of now. arts@orlandoweekly.com

When it rains, it pours, and
Orlando’s theme parks just experienced the deluge of the decade. Disney and Universal have a long history of going head-to-head, from Disney/MGM Studios’ rush to open a year ahead of Universal Studios Florida, to the dueling debuts of Diagon Alley and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in 2014. But last week’s near-simultaneous grand openings of Universal’s Volcano Bay and Disney’s World of Pandora represents their most significant showdown so far this century.
PANDORA – THE WORLD OF AVATAR
Let’s start at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where Pandora – The World of Avatar officially opened on May 27, almost six years after the park’s agreement with James Cameron was first announced. I wasn’t invited to press previews, but I managed to spend four hours inside during an annual passholder event and came away impressed. The first glimpse of Pandora’s iconic floating mountains is second only to the reveal of Gringotts’ dragon as a “wow” moment, and the Imagineers overloaded the area with rich scenic detail; the integration of Chihuly-esque artificial “plants” with alien-looking living flora is especially exquisite. As Disney’s first ground-up E-Ticket since the Wizarding World opened, the land’s signature Flight of Passage attraction manages to one-up Universal at its own game, with a themed queue even longer and more elaborately appointed than Hogwarts Castle and the best 3-D motion simulation I’ve ever experienced (sorry, Jimmy Fallon). With ultra-clear 3-D glasses, ginormous 8K screens and motorcycle-style seats that convincingly mimic riding a dragon-like Banshee (down to feeling your mount “breathing” between your thighs), Flight of Passage is essentially Epcot’s Soarin’ cranked up to 11. Na’vi River Journey, the land’s only other ride, is a brief all-ages boat ride boasting luminous scenery and one astounding singing animatronic, but no drops, storyline or even explanatory narration; think of it as “It’s a Small, Blue World” with slightly less-repetitious music. Pandora’s real supporting attraction is the

Satu’li Canteen quick-service restaurant, whose quinoa bowls with yogurt boba are a far cry from burgers and chicken fingers. I’m not anti-Avatar (I even own the film in 3-D), but even fans admit it doesn’t resonate emotionally with the masses like Potter or Star Wars. Disney wisely ignored the film’s forgettable plot and personas (the land is set generations after the upcoming sequels) in favor of its universally lauded visuals, but that leaves the World of Avatar lacking in characters and interactivity; there are no meet-and-greets and few touchable objects, aside from a phallic flower guests are encouraged to pet until it spurts (no, seriously). Ultimately, while Pandora is very pretty and Flight of Passage exceeds expectations, I don’t feel an urgent need to rush back. I’ll return eventually to see the bioluminescent landscape in its nighttime glory, but my prediction is Pandora will pull existing Disney guests away from Epcot and Hollywood Studios, rather than expand the market the way Potter did.
UNIVERSAL’S VOLCANO BAY
While Disney was dedicating their new expansion, I was up I-4 at the press event for Volcano Bay, Universal’s first on-site water park. Universal built an entire park in a fraction of the time Disney took for their land, and though employees made a herculean effort to get Volcano Bay ready on time for guests, some attractions weren’t working on opening morning, and the much-touted TapuTapu wristbands
(which promise to replace queuing with ride reservations) had limited functionality during my tour. Even as a work-in-progress, the landscaping and art direction throughout Volcano Bay is stunning, creating a luxurious Pacific Island atmosphere that’s more like an upscale resort than a typical water park. The food is far above average (try the tuna poke and coconut shrimp), and the signature drinks are strong, if too sweet. And despite being nestled next to the interstate, visual and audio intrusion is mostly a non-issue, with foliage and a soothing surf-rock soundtrack shielding the traffic sounds. You could easily spend a day sunning on the beach – I recommend the private loungers ($30-plus per pair) – and splashing in the surf surrounding the aweinspiring central volcano. But you’d be missing out on the biggest, best collection of slides in the state, featuring nearly every cutting-edge model manufacturer ProSlide exhibits at IAAPA. My favorites were Honu and Maku Puihi, which terrifyingly sweep your multi-passenger raft sideways up steep walls; and the serpentine Ta Nui drop capsule, which is like the Incredible Hulk Coaster of body slides. It’s over 200 steps to the top of the mountain, so start StairMastering now. While I’m willing to crown Volcano Bay my favorite water park since New Jersey’s infamous Action Park, I’m not fully on board with Universal’s “water theme park” moniker. Yes, it has immersive environments (though one “land” is aesthetically indistinguishable from another) and an elaborate backstory informing every attraction, but that theming isn’t always evident on the rides themselves. Orlando’s restaurant week events give diners a bird’s-eye view of our vibrant restaurant scene BY HOLLY V. KAPHERR

o understand the culture and history of a city, the first thing you should do is start planning your restaurant visits. In New Orleans, you wouldn’t miss beignets and café au lait at Café du Monde. Russ & Daughters for bagels and whitefish salad is a must when in Manhattan. In Los Angeles, pile your plate high with Cobb salad, French dip sandwiches, pupusas and Oki-Dogs. Orlando’s dining scene is still nascent, though it’s been pushed head-first into adolescence by demanding foodists and an internet busting at the seams with food porn. If Seattle, Portland and Chicago have it, why can’t we? Public demand has hastened Orlando’s adoption of food halls, farm-to-table menus, artisan donuts, brewpubs and supper clubs. There seems to be a different wine dinner or chef collaboration going on every night. Pop-up dinners and food truck gatherings sell out weekly. Chefs are being challenged to create what’s new, now and next in every neighborhood from Waterford Lakes to Winter Garden. But what’s the best way to get a bird’seye view of a city’s restaurant scene? The advent of the “restaurant week” (some last just a weekend; some are a full month long) has made that easier than ever. New York City’s twice-yearly Restaurant Week features more than 380 restaurants across the five boroughs offering three-course lunch and dinner options to throngs of eager eaters. Chicago hosts an annual event with 350 restaurants and prix fixe dinners for between $33 and $44 per person, even at five-star spots. While the City Beautiful isn’t pulling numbers like those, two res-
enjoyed before and places you’ve been dying to try. Consider putting a couple of restos you’ve never heard of on the list, too. Interested in Spanish food? Visit Tapa Toro or Bulla Gastrobar, both on the Bite 30 roster. Adore sushi but rarely branch out from your usual rainbow roll? Umi on Park Avenue is offering a four-course, $30 dinner featuring 13 different options. STEP 2: CLAIM YOUR SPOT. Some of the restaurants on the Bite 30 list are hot spots where reservations are strongly suggested. Any dining enthusiast knows that reservations are always a good idea, even if the place isn’t packed. Generally, restaurants save the best seats (i.e., not the ones near the server stand or the restrooms) for patrons who have planned far enough ahead to make a rezzie.

A focused menu of local, seasonal fare peppered with Portuguese and Brazilian flavors allows journeyman chef Bruno Fonseca to showcase his personal style and brilliant technique. Dishes, for the most part, are creative yet approachable – be it a magnificent serving of simply grilled royal red shrimp with “punched” potatoes, or golden tile crested with fennel-citrus-blueberry salad served over farro verde. Duxelles are folded into the beef for added umami in the burger, and if you’re up for a fancified sharing plate, the tuna tartare with a grating of preserved lemon and cured yolk sided with Aleppo-peppered pork rinds over an avocado puree (whew) will do just fine. This Milk District sandwich joint gives lunch reason to live, thanks to chefowner John Collazo’s mighty fine sammies. Most are served on a French roll, though the El Anormal #3 with adoboroasted pork and peppery cantimpalo sausage gooeyed up with chipotle jack cheese comes served on soft, subtly sweet egg bread. Glimmers of hope come from the kitchen in the fried chicken, a classic poutine with a peppery gravy, and desserts fashioned from recipes of the owner’s grandmother – the pecan pie and moonshine cake in particular. “Change is coming” could be my favorite tagline of the last five years, although I also would have been perfectly happy with “Coming to kick A Wimpy Kid’s ass.” This adaptation of the eight-volume kids’ book series is the culmination of 20 years’ worth of negotiations between author Dav Pilkey and DreamWorks. Even though the latter ultimately decided to farm out the animation to Canada to save money – resulting in the departure of original director Rob Letterman – a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller portends the same fun-forthe-whole-family vibe as his Muppet reboots. Here’s hoping this Fruit of the Loom is the cream of the crop. (PG) The Wedding Plan Dumped by her fiancé just
one month before their nuptials, a 32-year-old woman decides to go through with the ceremony anyway – just with a different groom she’s sure she can meet and land by the fateful day. Sounds terribly retrogressive, right? An unfortunate reinforcement of the “needy single woman” stereotype? A patriarchal fantasy that helps no one? Not so fast, there: The movie is set in Israel. And as we all know, anything that’s done over there automatically becomes quaint, charming and defensible when viewed through our own lens. I mean, just look at the settlements! (PG) Wonder Woman Regular readers know all too well how I feel about the DC Cinematic Universe. But you know what? I might just hate ISIS even more. So damn you, Manchester bomber, for causing Warner Bros. to cancel the London premiere of Wonder Woman, since you’ve made it quite clear that any popcultural product that advertises the empowerment of females is now a public-safety hazard.

n one of those tragic, truly fucked twists of fate that can make life seem like a bad dream, trip-soul tandem Chakra Khan celebrated the release of their debut album (Love Is at the Core) on June 11, 2016, with a show at the Venue, the centerpiece of which was a moving, ethereal meditation on loss and renewal called “Pulse.” Several hours later, 49 innocents would lose their lives at the gay nightclub Pulse in the worst mass shooting in modern American history. Vocalist and leader Alexandra Love remembers the evening and its immediate aftermath as an “intense experience … something we could have never imagined.” But in the same breath, she marvels at the way “the Orlando community rallied together after that night.” In many ways, Chakra Khan’s new album – The Cope Aesthetic – builds on those memories and the grieving and

It’s hard to capture lightning – or, in Tommy Stinson’s case, the party – in a bottle. The Replacements were that party. Boy, were they. But truly great parties like that are magical things. They just happen, and there’s only so much you can do to force it. And poor Stinson has been chasing it for a long time. He tried immediately after the Replacements disbanded with Bash & Pop. The band released an album in 1993 and then it was over with little but a small cult footprint to show for it. Other music concerns eventually took over for him, including playing bass in Guns N’ Roses. And then, in the ultimate tease, the Replacements actually reunited in 2012, only to buckle under their own baggage again in 2015. Now, Stinson’s finally resurrected Bash & Pop and released a follow-up album after 24 years this January on esteemed indie label Fat Possum. If the party chemistry was already elusive before the dust of the original Replacements’ 1991 implosion settled, you’d think it would be sheer fantasy at this point. And then you press play on the new album, Anything Can Happen. Turns out, the title is right, prescient even, because this record is good, eerily good, a miracle. With a surprising number of instant classics, it’s maybe the best channeling of the ’Mats spirit there’s been, at least in a very long time. On stage in Orlando, they were loud,

Even though their attitude is shaggy by design, the band actually delivered with precision and muscle, befitting a current lineup studded with members of the Hold Steady, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Screeching Weasel. As for Stinson himself, the guy commanded the frontman spot like he was always meant to be there and wore it like a punk lifer. Personifying that hallmark dynamic between heart and spit, he sharply barked about technical issues but then immediately overcame them with touching and personal gestures like unplugged, gather-’round performances that stoked the crowd until the problems were fixed, showing a balance between hardened warhorse and unflappable showman. It looks like someone found the keys to the glory days. The original marrow, it seems, still exists and Tommy Stinson is tapping it. Make that shot a double, barkeep.
DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN AND SEAN SHAKESPEARE, THE SOCIAL, MAY 23

In perspective and aesthetic, Del the Funky Homosapien has often seemed more from outer space than the West Coast. The chill step and left lean of his signature lyrics and flow have made him one of the most consistently intriguing rappers of his generation. That he sports a résumé that includes Deltron 3030 and Gorillaz is no accident. Backed by fellow Hieroglyphics crew member Domino, Del put on a careerspanning performance, including material from those high-profile side projects. The set went from golden old-school vibes on out to his odder orbits, all with easy charisma and skill that neither tries too hard nor needs to. Dude killed it from the pocket all night long. Once the crowd started sending shots up on stage, Del’s stream of consciousness only got more outlandish, mixing life observations with allusions to Hellboy. The more real he got, the clearer it became that he’s far more indie hero than glitzy star. Even more, he’s a true original who comes from a time and school where being weird wasn’t license to slack on your technique. Talking to all you mumble rappers out there right now. Opening was local MC Sean Shakespeare, who blends a modern outlook with classic hip-hop style. With clean, tight lines and acrobatic fitness, he rolls in a natural cadence that’s technical but never tense. Backed by good, interesting tracks, he’s one of the most complete of the young artists in the Orlando-based Second Subject crew.

Florida Prize Preview Party MUSIC
The album art to Crumb’s self-titled and self-released (August 2016) EP Crumb suggests an interminable sea of pink slime and polluted aquatic dreams. Three minutes into their EP, a bricolage of psychedelic rock sounds and jazz notes delicately surprises the aural senses. Unsurprisingly, the band was born out of collegiate friendship – Lila Ramani (guitar and vocals), Jesse Brotter (bass), Brian Aronow (synth/keys and saxophone) and Jonathan Gilad (drums) pair lugubrious lyrics and undertones with tunes that make you want to dance, or at least nod your head. In this year’s selection of Florida-based artists competing for OMA’s annual Florida Prize in Contemporary Art, the divisions of the current art scene rise more starkly than ever before. Earlier iterations of the show gathered a more homogenous group, whereas 2017’s exhibition careens from Old Master-style representational oil painting to multi-channel video. It should make for a lively exhibition, as well as a lively opening party – everybody loves the “but is it really art” debate, right? OK, even if you don’t enjoy a good art fight, you can meet the artists, see the show, snack on the work of 10 caterers (including Bulla, Reyes Mezcaleria, Soco and more, each of whom will interpret one of the artists in edible form); sip beer, wine or cocktails; and chill to DJ Stereo77. The Orange County Regional History Center is paying tribute to the tourists, with all of the cringey clichés included, at the Great Florida Road Trip Tacky Tourist Party. Florida natives will be no strangers to the mini-Cuban sandwiches and Key lime pies and shuffleboard, and the Tacky Costume Contest is a good chance to put that lei you got at a luau party six years ago to use. Author Cathy Salustri will be there to discuss her book, Backroads of Paradise: A Journey to Rediscover Old Florida, and to remind us that it’s not about the destination – it’s about the journey. Taste of Haiti EVENTS
The Taste of Haiti festival showcases Haitian cuisine, life and heritage, celebrating the Haitian presence in Central Florida and inviting anyone who is unfamiliar with the island to “discover, experience, live and love the Haitian culture.” Hosted by Modernique Events and Taste of Haiti Orlando, the event is a fundraiser for a hospitality education program in Haiti and the United States run by the Haitian Culinary Alliance (HCA). Taste of Haiti comes right on the heels of the May 22 decision by the Trump administration to only temporarily extend protected status for 50,000 Haitian hotel and theme park workers to stay in Florida. In just six months, these workers face potential deportation to a country grappling with hunger and housing crises, with little to no job opportunities. HCA President Stephen Durand and other culinary leaders aim to broaden Haiti’s image through tourism and gastronomy, and advocates for workers to put pressure on President Trump to support Haitians in Florida who contribute to both the American and Haitian economies. There are few venue-artist combinations that work as well as the sultry-voiced songwriter and R&B icon Macy Gray and the prestigious Parliament House. Parliament House’s pedigree of hosting Gay Days events is only bolstered by the addition of Gray. Since she called for a “Sexual Revolution” in her 2001 album, The Id, the artist and activist has not slowed in bringing her beliefs to life through her lyrics. “White Man” is Gray’s latest sonic statement, and the song holds a message of the power of collective collaboration, according to an interview Gray held with Fader magazine. It’s been 18 years since Gray released “I Try”; since then the singer’s dynamic career has traversed a range of music styles including feverish disco boogies, pop ballads and her unique, raspy take on jazz. Total Punk is known for cutting-edge curation by label head and Golden Pelican Rich Evans, who honed his tastemaking acumen when running the now-defunct Floridas Dying label. So for his 40th birthday party on Tuesday, it makes sense that he’d resurrect one of the shining stars of the Floridas Dying roster, South Florida’s Cop City/Chill Pillars. Though they’ve been dormant for a while, their ability to combine post-punk rhythms with garage-punk ferocity and whip them up into a face-melting storm on stage is the stuff that $5 weekday-night show dreams are made of. It’s a feat they’ve never quite managed to replicate on record, but a recent cassette release of demos on New York label Haord gives us hope that they’ll give it another shot soon. – TM with Curleys | 9 p.m. | Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Destruction MUSIC
Alongside similarly heavy-minded Euro fiends like Sodom and Venom, Germany’s Destruction were part of a proto-thrash vanguard that both inspired and mirrored what was happening on America’s West (Metallica, Slayer) and East (Anthrax, Nuclear Assault) coasts. And it was Destruction who were true inheritors of the trashy leather-encased excellence of a Motörhead, a Mercyful Fate or a Judas Priest. Led by a hulking maniac named Schmier (not even fucking around), Destruction exploded right out of the gate with instant classic Infernal Overkill, a lethal mix of trashy excess, furious speed and lethal melodic chops, quickly – there was no other way with this band – followed by Eternal Devastation and Mad Butcher. And if you’re in a rural area, it’s likely you’ll message your full cast of Grindr torsos within a few days.
Think of Grindr as a giant gay bar – most guys are there to hook up, a few just want to hang out and chat, some dudes are really messed up (avoid them) and no one is at their best around closing time. I’m a 25-year-old gay woman and I’ve been looking for a girlfriend for the past two years. I post on dating websites, go to the lesbian club, take part in the LGBTQ+ scene at my university and put myself in places where I might meet women.
