Readers react to blog posts and stories from the April 25 issue. On April 25, we published a story on a new study by GasBuddy.com that ranks Florida eighth among the country’s most aggressive drivers. The study looked at data from tens of millions of trips from December 2017 to March 2018, noting the frequency of aggressive events while driving like speeding, hard braking or rapid acceleration. @Tammy Rock Because drivers in Florida suck! Let’s go 45 in the fast lane on I-4. How hard is it to get over? Then you have those people that stop to turn and not use their blinkers. I could go on and on. @Mike Robinson Keep in mind that Florida gets like 100 million visitors a year from everywhere. But local drivers have no shame. @Doug Tirschel And they do it while texting and eating a Big Mac ... On April 26, we reported that Clickhole, the Buzzfeed-like department

of The Onion, had posted a series of fake tweets from SeaWorld claiming the park no longer cares about attendance and is just going to see “how fat they can get a dolphin.” The headline read, before claiming to have satirically laid off its PR person: “SeaWorld Has Realized People Will Be Mad At It No Matter What It Does So It’s Just Going To See How Fat It Can Make A Dolphin Before It Goes Bankrupt.” @Chris Hawk Screw SeaWorld. Let them make money off rollercoasters and rides instead of caging up animals and using them as show ponies. @Molly Skye Brown If they made it strictly a rehabilitation park and no animals for entertainment purposes, they could save their park. We wouldn’t be surprised to see them sell their park off to Universal Studios. @Betsy Landesman Jacobs Not funny at all. This the problem with people today. SeaWorld does a tremendous amount of good for marine life.

UCF’s ‘national championship trophy’ is now on tour, Florida is expected to experience the country’s largest economic impact from climate change, and other news you may have missed last week. »

UCF’s ‘national championship trophy’ is now on tour: To put the finishing touches on the University of Central Florida’s undefeated, highly disputed “national championship” season, there’s a trophy making the rounds. However, you’ll have to go to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to see it, since it’s courtesy of the “UCF Trophy Tour Staff” – a bunch of University of Alabama students and football fans – who made the trophy out of trash and dumpster scraps before unveiling it at a bar on Tuscaloosa’s strip.

Florida’s Democratic debates are set and none are happening in Orlando: The Florida Democratic Party announced last week that debates will be held June 9 in St. Petersburg, June 11 in Miramar, July 18 in Fort Myers and Aug. 2 in Miami. Additional details about the times and locations will be announced in the coming weeks. The Democratic candidates last squared off in a televised debate on April 18 in Tampa.

Florida will experience the country’s largest economic impact from climate change: A recent study published in Nature highlighted a sobering fact: The least amount of impact from climate change our planet can possibly hope for at this point is the oceans only warming 2 degrees, an increase that would raise overall sea levels by roughly 20 feet. In other words, Florida is extremely screwed, because the study suggests that if we continue on our current fossil fuel-use trajectory, ocean levels will likely reach these levels by 2100, which seems like a long time – but keep in mind sea levels are accelerating every year. Just to state the obvious: This is bad.

Marco Rubio questions legitimacy of Brightline train financing: U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio raised questions last week about Brightline’s intention to sell $1.75 billion in federally authorized, tax-exempt private activity bonds to help fund the construction of its passenger rail service connecting South Florida to Orlando. In a letter sent to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Rubio stated that “it is not clear” whether Brightline’s express trains meet the federal standards to qualify for the bonds, which are key to the service’s ability to fund the second leg of its project: new rail lines and safety upgrades between West Palm Beach and Orlando.

Puerto Rican governor announces launch of new political organization in Orlando: Early last week, Puerto Rican Gov. Ricardo Rosselló announced the launch of a new political organization intended to influence the November 2018 midterm elections by mobilizing the Puerto Rican vote in Florida. Poder, which translates to “power,” is a nonpartisan civic organization focused on the voter registration and political participation of U.S. citizens from Puerto Rico. “We need to showcase the political power of Puerto Ricans, so we can start pressing the issues that matter most to us – quality of life, real solutions to problems,” Rosselló said in a news release prior to the announcement. xpeters@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Throughout his college career at the University of Missouri, Sam earned honors similar to Griffin’s, including being named a consensus All-American and sharing the Southeastern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year award. But Sam’s professional career was cut short, some claim as a result of his ready-made sense of celebrity upon entering the NFL. First, the Rams released him from their preseason roster; then the Dallas Cowboys signed but eventually waived him from their practice team in October 2014. Sam officially announced his retirement on Aug. 15, 2015, citing mental health issues and following a brief stint in the Canadian Football League. The celebrity that came with Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protests is another stunning example of how “distractions,” as these hot-button topics are often referred to in the league, are akin to cancer in the minds of NFL owners and executives alike. No one disputes Kap’s prowess, but he’s radioactive, as a leaked recording of an owners’ meeting proved last month. Simply stated, those involved in the political machinery of the NFL have historically shied away from anyone who’s different – not just for, ahem, “lifestyle reasons” or political opinions but also physical aspects, whether we’re talking about a short quarterback who has trouble seeing his passing lanes, a slow wide receiver or an undersized offensive lineman. As far as most coaches and managers are concerned, there’s a physical archetype for each position that seems set in stone. But leave it to Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, who’s known as much around the league for his eccentricities as he is for his Super Bowl ring, to cut against the grain. Following the draft, Carroll, who was visibly slack-jawed after watching Shaquem’s combine performance in March, said of his defensive crew’s newly acquired brotherly duo: “They own this extraordinary connection that I think also is a demonstration of love and heart and all of the cool things about what they represent.” Carroll continued, referring to the predraft interview with Shaquem: “I don’t know that I’ve ever been in a more inspirational interview … than that one. He was just so expressive and so open to tell his story and to tell what this opportunity meant to him in such a way that he moved us, just like those of you that have watched him. He’s an extraordinary young man.” For Shaquem’s sake, let’s hope the extraordinary has a chance to become familiar, and the unprecedented can set a new precedent.

amputated due to complications from a rare birth defect called amniotic band syndrome. But the Griffin brothers’ father pushed them to compete alongside each other, never allowing Shaquem’s physical hindrance to act as a drawback. At Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, both brothers earned All-State honors before electing to attend UCF under the tenure of then-head coach George O’Leary, since he was one of the few recruiters who wanted both brothers. O’Leary’s coaching regime didn’t last, however. He was fired midway through an eventual 0-12 season in 2015. But with former head coach Scott Frost’s subsequent hiring (Frost left UCF for his alma mater, the University of Nebraska, earlier this year), Shaquem found himself in a defensive scheme that allowed him to excel. The past couple of seasons are proof: In 2016, Shaquem earned the American Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year award and first-team AllConference honors. Following up that performance as a redshirt senior, in 2017 he earned first-team All-American honors and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Defensive MVP award as he helped cap off UCF’s undefeated season, which included an AAC championship and a bowl win over Auburn University on New Year’s Day. Then came the NFL Scouting Combine in March, which Griffin initially wasn’t invited to attend, regardless of his stellar performance throughout his junior and senior years. SHAQUILL AND SHAQUEM GRIFFIN AT THE NFL DRAFT | PHOTO COURTESY UCF ATHLETICS There, he measured and weighed in at just more than 6 feet tall and 227 pounds – which many consider undersized for a linebacker, by NFL standards. WUNDERKIND? PRODIGY? UNICORN? Orlando Ballet’s dancer-choreographer-composer Arcadian Broad has been called “the future of ballet.” But he shrugs off labels – and eats pressure for breakfast BY CHRIS BELT

T

he first time I saw Arcadian Broad, he was on my turf, attending a networking event at the Timucua arts house, the venue I direct. I think it was his first time there, and he paced slowly through the lobby. His measured steps suggested he might be assessing how much space there was for a jeté. There was slight tension on his face as he processed the sounds and semiotics of his surroundings. Maybe he was calculating how long he needed to be there. Maybe his mind was somewhere else entirely, reviewing steps for his next performance, or working out choreography for his upcoming ballet about the Mad Hatter, or refining a melody for that ballet or the next one. I introduced myself and I told him I was going to be writing a story about him. My editor thought, as a fellow musician, I might have a fresh take on his work. At the end of the conversation I realized I had no sense of what he was thinking. He’s comfortable, sure of himself, but doesn’t give anything away. I was intrigued by his reserve – not the usual mode for an ambitious young artist at a schmoozefest, I thought – and then I went back to work, schmoozing. It’s happening: I’m inserting myself into the story, the pitfall of the celebrity profile. But don’t we all do this with the wunderkinder, the child prodigies, the Macaulay Culkins and Harry Potters and, now, Arcadian Broads – measure ourselves against their outsize accomplishments? Broad has been dancing professionally since he was a child, competing and supporting his family for years, and now at 22, he moves through the world with the confidence of LeBron James. How do I get to know someone so self-possessed – so, well, guarded – well enough to talk about him and not have him hate me for it? These are the thoughts in the back of my mind on a warm April morning as I walk up to Lineage in Mills 50, where I’ll interview Orlando Ballet’s celebrated dancer-actor-pianist-composerchoreographer.

or musician. “When I first started, yes,” he admits. “I did have to figure out how to fit into the mold, and I did have a crossroads when I started ballet.” This was the notorious “dipping your fingers in all the different pies” moment, when he decided to quit ballet. When Hill hired the ballet school’s next director, Dierdre Miles Burger, in 2010, the first thing he tasked her with was getting Arcadian back. At 16 years old, he was hired as the company’s youngest professional dancer. As a kid he was competing for our attention, pushing for recognition of his talent – any talent – even as he outgrew role after role. Now, as OB’s official unicorn, dancing and choreographing and composing music, he’s a highly touted, heavily marketed featured attraction. Hill has called him “the future of ballet.” Talk about pressure.

Demonstrating how it all comes together, Hill extemporaneously choreographs some elegant steps for three pairs of dancers – male/male, female/female and female/male. They memorize their parts, the music starts, they dance for about four bars and then freeze as the music stops. There is applause. Now it’s Broad’s turn, and where Hill chose movements that the three pairs could memorize easily and execute gracefully, Broad is in Mad Hatter mode, tying the dancers into Twister-esque knots, occasionally leaving them momentarily confused or bumping awkwardly. He’s brainstorming, circling the performers and envisioning one step at a time, never losing the connection from one step to the next. The two male dancers twist and turn until CONTINUED ON PAGE 17

they emerge from a sort of floppy grappling, suddenly and unpredictably, into a moment of beauty and repose. The audience lets out a gasp and then cheers loudly. It felt like 10 minutes to work out four seconds of music, but the payoff is real, and Arcadian is grinning.

“H

is talent speaks for itself,” Hill says. “When he started conducting his first rehearsals,” he says, “there was a lot of scorn and ‘Who do you think you are, don’t tell me what to do’ [from the other dancers].” Hill didn’t tolerate dissent or disrespect for his protégé, and now Broad leads like a veteran – tight ship, loose grip. On a Friday morning I arrive at the ballet studio to observe him in rehearsal with a few male dancers from the company for his new work, “Mad Hatter’s Wonderland.” The premise, choreography and music are all Broad’s own, with the Mad Hatter exiled to the London of the 1920s. Broad’s score is equal parts Sergei Prokofiev and Danny Elfman, with buoyant, off-kilter motifs in a colorful harmonic language. There is a tension between elegant and angular, but there is always his dancer’s connection to rhythm. This weekend’s Contemporary Wonders

program at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts features a half-hour preview of “Wonderland,” which will eventually be a 70-minute, three-act ballet involving as many as 50 dancers, Broad says. “Everything from the production department to the wardrobe department to the makeup department is shaping up to be something that I haven’t seen a ballet company do yet.” Broad waves to me and gets back to teaching the steps for a solo by the White Rabbit. He pushes the dancers through explosive leaps with eccentrically precise landings, then through twists and hops evoking the dances of the Jazz Age. They’re following along, relaxed and laughing but very much on their toes; they’re sharing the same easygoing feeling of discovery as guys in a garage band teaching each other songs. The piece culminates in a hyper-exaggerated reveal of the White Rabbit’s bête-noire: his pocket watch. Broad has refined the stop-on-a-dime movements into a signature language for the fidgety, high-strung Rabbit. If every number captures its character this well, “Wonderland” will be a smash. I ask Broad about his method for choreography. Does he write it down on paper? Use notation software? No, he says, he envisions point A and point B and then works out what comes between in his head, in rehearsal. He improvises, and the dancers follow him. They trust him.

B

“It’s unheard of,” he continues, “and almost frowned upon.” He clearly knows that some ballet purists will be skeptical, that some people will use the spotlight shined on him to look for blemishes. He tightens up a bit when I ask if his career trajectory would’ve been possible in New York or London. “Maybe. Maybe. I don’t actually know. We can speculate.” But then he softens again and considers whether Orlando’s unique circumstances helped shape him. “Maybe.” Only time will tell if Broad’s career will bear out his mentor’s predictions. To realize just how unique a talent he is, it’s enough to look back at how few dancer-choreographer-composers there have been at all. Many dancers become choreographers, certainly, but adding composition to the mix is rare. It bodes well that many great choreographers were also accomplished musicians – George Balanchine, arguably the most important choreographer of the 20th century, was a gifted pianist trained at the Russian National Conservatory – but there are few if any memorable choreographer-composers. Could Broad be the first? “I definitely consider myself an artist, as opposed to a dancer, composer or whatever,” says Broad. “But the world needs those titles.”

ack at Lineage on that warm April morning I ask Broad how it feels to be the Future of Ballet. “I mean that statement alone is kind of heavy,” he says. “Everything you do is going to be analyzed, scrutinized, and people are going to want to dissect it. Which is scary. But also if you look at it from the other perspective, like, you have nothing to hide and all to give, then that’s not a bad thing.” The young artist projects a nervous, occasionally mischievous energy – eyes darting back and forth, talkative but sincere. There’s none of the cold, stern seriousness of the archetypal ballet dancer, but he is unmistakably confident, showing a remarkable level of comfort with the demands and expectations placed on him. Broad is aware of the abnormality of his circumstances – he has been his whole life. Feeling like he didn’t fit in with other kids, being bullied and then home-schooled, national television appearances – none of it has been normal, much less the rapid path to being a professional dancer. “Normal is you spend eight years in school and two years in a second company and then you gotta spend however long in the corps before reaching soloist and principal,” he tells me. “I spent – what, seven months in the school? And then nine months in the second company, and then I was a professional.”

So based on Universal’s recent track record, I had hopeful expectations as I headed to the park mere hours after disembarking my red-eye flight from LAX to attend one of the first public “technical rehearsals” of the new attraction.

DÉNOUEMENT

Ultimately, I think Supercharged is doomed to disappoint the fans who have made Fast & Furious a $5 billion-plus worldwide franchise: They go to the movies for vicarious thrills, and visit the parks for visceral ones. I repeatedly watched guests enter the attraction energized, only to emerge looking like Vin Diesel just drove over their cat. If anything good comes out of Supercharged, it should be the end of Universal’s overreliance on projection screens. The Harry Potter and Nintendo attractions en route will purportedly primarily use physical figures and sets, hopefully making Fast & Furious the final motion simulator we see at Universal for some time. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com ●

mong the Bento Group’s numerous ventures around town (and beyond), Kasa was the one Bento owners Johnny and Jimmy Tung hoped would be their differentiator, and the jewel in Bento’s crown. Having solicited the menu-developing services of former It Boy and Food Network alum Josh Lyons, the downtown tapas and raw bar clearly had serious aspirations. Alas, Kasa never quite developed the cred it craved in a city whose diners can be capricious and so … tacos! Kasa underwent some minor reno (it’s still a striking space), a relatively quick rebrand and a menu dumb-down for the sake of the all-powerful folded foodstuff, and thus was born Chela Tequila & Tacos. Really, you can’t blame them. In the cutthroat world of the restaurant biz, necessity can be the mother of invention or the mother of pragmatism, but it’s a mother nonetheless. Doesn’t take away from the fact that a concerted effort needs to be put forth no matter the circumstance, and Chela’s kitchen does just that. Our expectations of the roasted cauliflower ($9) were thrown for a loop with its nontraditional Indo-Mex flavorings – a curry spice blend was the active ingredient amid lemon juice, garlic aioli and toasted almonds, adding some Desi flair. THE TOM COLLINS BY JESSICA BRYCE YOUNG

T

he annual springtime anticipation of the first rhubarb, such a tradition in the more temperate zones, isn’t really a thing here in Florida. Maybe that’s because rhubarb doesn’t do particularly well in Florida’s climate, or because spring itself isn’t much of a thing here, going as we do from slightly cool temps to full-on hellmouth. So traditional delicate spring cocktails aren’t really a thing here either. We jump right into the strong, tangy margaritas and Mai Tais – and lemonade. A Tom Collins is really just a boozy, fizzy lemonade: gin, lemon juice, sugar to sweeten and soda water to make it bubble. Served in a tall glass over ice cubes with a straw, it’s an efficient and potent summer cooler. I wanted to split the difference between that tart strength and an easier, springier … pinker drink. But since I wasn’t seeing

rhubarb in the local markets, I had to find a way to my own version. I started by swapping gin for Lillet Rosé, a French fortified wine apéritif that’s just a bit stronger and more concentrated than your favorite summer rosé. I added Cocchi for a bit more punch, then topped with Trader Joe’s Rhubarb & Strawberry soda – hence no need for added sugar – then Fee brothers’ heavenly rhubarb bitters for complexity. (If you’re not a TJ’s fan for whatever reason, you can substitute a strawberry or blood orange soda – but it won’t be quite the same.) I garnished with a fresh strawberry and then, just for contrariness’ sake, served it in a short glass with one big lump of ice rather than the customary Collins glass. What can I say? Spring makes us all unpredictable. jyoung@orlandoweekly.com

CLASSIC: • • • •

2 ounces gin 1 ounce lemon juice 1 teaspoon sugar 4 ounces carbonated water

Add gin, lemon juice and sugar to an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake thoroughly and pour into a Collins glass filled with small ice cubes. Top with club soda and stir. Serve with straw.

REMIXED: • • • •

2 1/2 ounces Lillet Rosé 1/2 ounce Cocchi Americano 4 ounces rhubarb soda 6 dashes Fee Brothers rhubarb bitters • strawberry for garnish Pour Lillet, Cocchi and soda into whatever damn glass you feel like, over whatever kind of ice you want. Stir, shake on bitters to taste and garnish with strawberry. orlandoweekly.com

MO-CHICA CEVICHEPERUVIAN GRILL I-Drive Peruvian restaurant serves up the standards in decent enough fashion, but there’s very little here that sets it apart. A bracing and balanced ceviche mixto with octopus, calamari, shrimp and corvina is worth a look, but anticuchos lack flavor, as does the house causa. A seafood chaufa was plagued with uncooked rice kernels, and pisco sours proved innocuous. Lomo saltado fares better, and they do serve up a killer flan (aka crema volteado). THE EDISON The Disney offshoot of the famed downtown L.A. restaurant/nightclub dazzles with its looks, but baffles with its uninspired and pedestrian menu offerings. Slabs of overdone bacon served on a mini clothesline, heavily breaded and goopy crab cakes, dry meatloaf served with very little gravy, and a meh lamb burger present lost opportunities for creativity. But flashes of brilliance come in the form of corn dogs and fiery lamb meatballs in harissa, and a Rocky Road shake served inside a big-ass beaker is kitschy fun. Disney Springs, 1570 E. CHEF WANG’S KITCHEN Beijing-born chef Jian Hua Wang serves some of the best Chinese food in the city. In addition to Northern Chinese and Dongbei specialties, Wang serves Sichuan classics – don’t pass on an infernal bowl of “water boiled spicy fish filet” or the veg-friendly “spicy napa heart wok.” A plate of Japanese eggplant, peppers and potato proffers a taste of the north. Overboard

BY ST EVE SCHN EID ER THIS WEEK: Overboard Ever since Nigel Tufnel learned there’s a fine line between stupid and clever, gender swapping has been a tried-and-true way to give a fresh coat of respectability to the most odious of artistic concepts. Take for example the idea of a working-class dude getting revenge on a rich-bitch amnesiac by convincing her she’s his devoted hausfrau: It made 1987’s Overboard a cult classic, but such unbridled male resentment would never fly today, right? But wait – what if I told you it’s now the guy who’s the horrific snob and the chick the righteous everyday Jane who takes advantage of him? Really makes the civil fraud, criminal misrepresentation and borderline kidnapping almost seem justified, doesn’t it? That’s what Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez are hoping when it comes to this thorny remake, which has some heavy lifting to do if it wants to find an audience outside of fans of the original, who consider any update heresy on general principle. To control the fallout from the latter, Faris has claimed that she was taken to dinner by the stars of the 1987 film, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, who ended up giving the new project their “blessing.” But what were they going to do – declare her an infidel, light her on fire and salt the ground where she once stood? Then again, maybe I’m being unduly harsh. Because let’s face it, Captain Phillips was basically just a remake of Captain Ron. (PG-13) ALSO PLAYING: Backstabbing for Beginners The exploitation of humanitarian relief is the subject of this

latest drama by Danish director Per Fly (which, coincidentally, is also how Wrangler charges for jeans). Divergent’s Theo James plays a U.N. worker who uncovers corruption in the organization’s Oil-for-Food Programme. But given that his boss is Ben Kingsley, what are the odds? That guy’s been up to no good since Gandhi. (R) Kings Wow, a movie with Daniel Craig and Halle Berry that got an extremely small release and next to no promotion? I can’t for the life of me figure out how something like that could happen. I mean, it’s not like the picture casts them as residents of South Central Los Angeles who have to console each other during the 1992 riots, does it? Oh. OH. (R) You Were Never Really Here You probably remember hearing about this Joaquin Phoenix vehicle, in which he plays a hitman who’s out to rescue a young woman from human traffickers. You heard about it here, in fact, when we were under the impression it was going to open April 6. Our bad! Then we got word it was going to open April 27, which means we should have notified you in our April 25 issue – but, um, I forgot. (Good thing we ran a review in our April 25 issue that you can read at orlandoweekly.com! – Ed.) My bad! Anyway, you can still catch the movie for at least a couple more days, probably. Which would be good, because a lot of people seem to like it. And if not – hey, there’s always Overboard! (R) orlandoweekly.com

GREAT LIVE MUSIC RATTLES ORLANDO EVERY NIGHT

Cue the superhuman argument again. Almost 30 years after Anton Newcombe gave birth to the artistic idyll of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, he’s still relentless in his pursuit of artistic perfection. He’ll never bore you or let you down; if you can track him down for an interview, it will deliver a goldmine of potent quotables. In a 2012 chat with the A.V. Club, he relished his role as “a shamanistic, Ezekiel-type” rock & roll character who sings about love by using “a literary device where I might be singing about God even if I’m talking about drugs.” That came minutes after declaring that he deliberately moved to Berlin because he wanted to live “like a ghost” who could finally, firmly avoid consumerist advertising since it was written in a language he didn’t understand. Some people relate well to such nonconformist hereticism; some don’t. I usually fall in the latter category, but Newcombe’s magic worked on me way back in August 2005, when I saw the Brian Jonestown Massacre perform in San Francisco. The concert came just days after Hurricane Katrina had ravaged the Gulf Coast, and as a native Louisianan recently transPHOTO BY RUARI MEEHAN planted to the Bay Area, I was distraught to the point of debilitation, desperate for news from friends and family in New Orleans and adrift in a sea of uncaring Californians. MINISTRY AND CHELSEA WOLFE, HARD ROCK LIVE, APRIL 26

There’s probably no better time for one of industrial music’s most legendary bands to rise again. Ministry called it a day back in 2008, when Al Jourgensen thought the band had said all it had to say after riding out on an unrelenting three-album assault on the boneheaded administration of George W. Bush. But now that Trump’s in office, we’re not just talking dystopia, we’re living it in Technicolor, baby. So what better soundtrack is there than militant audio insurrection? And Ministry are here to supply fresh ammo for the resistance. Even before anyone took the stage, the pre-show graphics were already hot and blunt with messages rocking the vote and pushing the hashtag #NEVERAGAIN. And flanking the stage were two of the infamous giant inflatable Trump Chickens, made even more explicit with anti-Nazi signs emblazoned on their breasts. Yes, the times are fraught again, and Ministry’s ready to go all Antifa on some shit. So they’re back, raging like yore and even dropping samples like it’s 1988 in their latest work, the unequivocally titled AmeriKKKant. Boasting a live band loaded with metal credentials, the full fury of their music was unleashed with fidelity and head-on power, dispensing thrash at full clip. There was even live scratching by DJ Swamp and cameos by Fear Factory’s Burton C. Bell. But

Now that Trump’s in office, we’re not just talking dystopia, we’re living it in Technicolor, baby. So what better soundtrack for it than Ministry?

regardless of who’s playing, Ministry begins and ends with Al Jourgensen. And the agitator-in-chief himself wasn’t just present but leaner and much more electrified than last I saw him a decade ago, performing here like a frontman on a crusade instead of just a historical figurehead. After an hour of new material, they brought it home like a guided missile with classic warheads like “Just One Fix,” “N.W.O.,” “Thieves” and “So What.” Mirroring the musical intent, Ministry’s current stage show is a full visual onslaught of guerrilla messaging and hilariously edited Trump clips. In aggregate, it’s a multimedia sensory feast that’s the next step of the great industrial tradition of art as warfare. Opener Chelsea Wolfe has been zeroing in on her sound lately with extraordinary focus. The turf between dark and theatrical has long been the playground of hacks and cornballs. It’s a minefield, and working it without stepping on a Velveeta bomb is a feat that history shows is not easy. But she’s done it. For all the shadowy corners Wolfe has explored in her career, she’s now riding

high and hard with her formula. And as this rock-forward performance affirmed, she’s hitting a sweet spot between drama and heft. In this balance, her voice floats above, disembodied and spectral, while a pounding march of elephant drums and deep doom grooves rumbles below toward the void. The sum total is dread rock that weaves midnight vibes, high theater and elemental metal into a tailored shroud requisite for every selfrespecting modern goth.

RAGLAN ROAD Deep in the contrived heart of Disney Springs, there beats a bit of Irish authenticity. It seems Raglan Road has a robust live-music program, scouted by co-owner John Cooke himself, that imports most of its talent directly from the homeland. In fact, what the pub does with many of its headliners is give them residencies so they can be enjoyed there for weeks or even months on end. And across two stages, the pub showcases four acts every night. On a recent visit, I was impressed by Tullamore Celtic-bluegrass band Jig Jam and Donegal traditional family act the Byrne Brothers (go online to read my full review). What struck me most, however, was how much of a bastion of Irish culture Raglan Road really was. And, if you stay until 10:30 p.m., it becomes more of a true music hall once the headliner begins. It’s reason enough to wade into Disney Springs for a Celtic kick more often than the occasional Flogging Molly or Dropkick Murphys show at HOB. baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Nashville South: Raelyn Nelson Band MUSIC

Nashville South is the roving and ongoing live showcase by Orlando promoter Modern Music Movement that’s noted for its Americana leanings. This time, it’s landing at the gorgeous and exciting new outdoor venue the Veranda Live, a stage that MMM is currently booking and a spot we recently hailed as the potential new town square for Thornton Park. Alongside homegrown acts like Crenshaw and the rising Beemo are top-shelf locals Stephen Rock and Whyte Tygers, the powerful new full band fronted by venerated folk couple Heather Lee and Jordan Wynn that completely owned Southern Fried Sunday’s Southern Belle Ball last autumn. But the headliner this time, the Raelyn Nelson Band, is especially noteworthy and intriguing. Fronted by the granddaughter of no less than Willie Nelson, the garage-hearted Nashville group is a shot of country in the arm of rock & roll. Go see some royal bloodline and legit homegrown twang in one of the city’s most naturally beautiful venues. – Bao Le-Huu with Whyte Tygers, Stephen Rock, Beemo, Crenshaw | 7 p.m. | The Veranda at Thornton Park, 111 N. Terrorizer MUSIC

OUR PICKS FOR THE BEST EVENTS THIS WEEK 40

Are we dreaming? Los Angeles grindcore legends Terrorizer cut an undisputed classic of the genre with 1989’s World Downfall, a masterclass in the dizzying tempos, thrashy riffing and heavy sociopolitical subject matter that defines the grindcore template to this very day. Up there with Napalm Death and Extreme Noise Terror in terms of sheer influence, Terrorizer’s rotating membership would go on to reinvigorate bands like the aforementioned ND, Morbid Angel and Nausea. In 2018, the only early member of Terrorizer who remains is drum banshee Pete Sandoval, now joined by Sam Molina (vocals, bass) and Lee Harrison (guitar), and yet, the chance to see these legends of the underground at West End Trading Co.’s Cinco de Metal is too much for us to resist. This is the only Cinco de Mayo event that isn’t vaguely gross. You know what to do. – Matthew Moyer with Faces of Many, Erode, Three Knuckles Deep, Alphaeus | 6 p.m. | West End Trading Co., 202 S. Sanford Ave., Sanford | 407-322-7475 | drinkatwestend.com | $16-$20

Uncomfortable Brunch Presents: Mother! FILM

Mother’s Day arrives a little early this month with Uncomfortable Brunch’s screening of Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! The film divided audiences upon its release last year; some loved its allegorical take on the Christian creation myth, while others loathed its chauvinistic take on the creative process – both valid interpretations. The only real controversy we saw was that no studio should have pegged this film for a wide release and marketing campaign. Audiences agreed, it seems, since CinemaScore – a company that measures audience reaction to movies – bestowed the film with an “F” score, something only 18 films have received since 1986. But if your mom is a fan of Jennifer Lawrence – or hates her and wants to see her go through some shit – Uncomfortable Brunch has you covered. Just don’t be surprised if you get written out of the will because of it. – Thaddeus McCollum 1 p.m. | Will’s Pub, 1042 N. Mills Ave. | willspub.org | uncomfortablebrunch.com | $10-$12

Functionally Literate + Housewifes LITERARY

Quarterly reading series Functionally Literate continues its flit throughout the city in its latest installment, a night at the Timucua arts house – they can’t be tied down! Expect them where you least expect them! Also un-pindown-able is the feminist art collective Housewifes, who partner with FuncLit on this show to create an immersive art environment. “A lot of the works in the show address the gendered boundaries between public and private, and we think the Timucua arts house is activated as a space (since it is a house) by these ideas being brought to attention in a visual, immersive way,” says Leah Sandler, a member of the collective. Installations, video and performance work take over the concert space, from which the usual seating will be removed to facilitate the observation of work by Jessica Earley, Candy Gonzalez, Rosemarie Romero and many more. The literary portion of the evening features six writers, including new work by poet Terri Witek, whose bravura reading performance is never not thrilling. Functionally Literate host Jared Silvia says, “One point of this event is to bring together two different artistic communities that too often operate in their own silos,” and it seems clear that tonight walls will fall in tribute to intersectionality. – Jessica Bryce Young 5 p.m. (readings start at 7 p.m.) | Timucua White House, 2000 S. Orlando Philharmonic 25th Anniversary: Yo-Yo Ma and Colin Jacobsen MUSIC

Founded in 1993, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates its quarter-century mark this week with an anniversary concert. The Phil has a reputation for programming that utilizes special guests, and this concert is no different. In addition to conductor Eric Jacobsen’s violinist brother and former collaborator in vaunted string quartet Brooklyn Rider, Colin, the Phil brings in the world’s most famous cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. The centerpiece of the concert is Brahms’ Double Concerto in A Minor, which fittingly provides plenty of space for two string players of Ma and Jacobsen’s caliber to shine. Don’t let the price tag dissuade you: This is sure to be a very special birthday indeed. – TM 8 p.m. | Bob Carr Theater, 401 W. Livingston St. | 407-246-4262 | orlandophil.org | $100-$300

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic MUSIC

In the 1970s, Detroit singer/producer/interstellar being George Clinton was creating music at a rate that few have yet matched – save perhaps Prince – funneling his flood of songs and ideas into two main projects, funk outfit Parliament and psychedelic crew Funkadelic. Don’t be mistaken, though, Parliament-Funkadelic was in every sense a collective, a gloriously out-there troupe of outer space-obsessed musicians and artists who were at the top of their respective games, and who proceeded to change the face of popular music with albums like One Nation Under a Groove and Mothership Connection. Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic created a lethally funky Afrofuturism that still sounds mind-blowing to this day, influencing everything from Dr. Dre’s West Coast rap empire to Liquid Liquid and Fishbone. Clinton is still proudly flying his freak flag and “getting down just for the funk of it,” and really, you should be doing exactly the same. – Matthew Moyer with Miss Velvet and the Blue Wolf | 7:30 p.m. | House of Blues, 1490 E. B Y D A N S AVA G E

I wish I had a better question, but this is all I have: My friends and I were discussing the nuances of a straight orgy (a roughly equal number of male and female participants) versus a gang bang (one woman, many men), and we observed that there is no proper name for a one man, many women situation. The internet tells me it’s just a “reverse gang bang,” which is a very disappointing name. Can we please establish a new one? Curious Nonparticipant How does “pussy riot” grab you? And while we’re on the subject of flipping gendered expressions: A number of years ago, I was asked to come up with a female version of “sausage fest.” Sticking with the food theme, I proposed “clam bake.” Still mystified as to why it didn’t catch on. Married from 28 to 36, single the last three years, and celibate most of the last couple years. The last two years of my marriage were sexless, and I saw professionals until I was priced out. I could probably earn twice what I’m making now if I moved away, but my current job gives me the flexibility to spend afternoons with my young kids. Last year, I had a brief relationship (that included the best sex of my life), but I ended it because I needed more me time. So I lack the willingness or the confidence to be in a relationship, and I don’t have the cash to see pros. I’m not fussed by this. Should I be concerned about my celibacy? Absolutely Not Getting Sex Today Seeing as your celibacy is intermittent and by your own choice (you walked away from the best sex of your life for “me time”? What kind of mid-’90s Oprah bullshit is that?), ANGST, you’re unlikely to wind up hanging out on an “incel” forum filled with angry, violent, socially maladapted men who blame the fact that they can’t get laid on women and feminism. So long as you continue to take personal responsibility for all the sex you’re not having, there’s nothing to be concerned about. My boyfriend and I have been together for two years. When we first got together, we had sex every day. Then it dwindled. We had major problems along the way and separated this winter. During that time, he went to another state. We got back together longdistance, and I received many letters from him saying how much he wanted to have sex with me. He moved back two weeks ago, and we’ve had sex only twice. He used to say he wanted me to make the first move. But if he really wanted me, wouldn’t he make a move? I feel so neglected, yet he claims he loves me. Please give me some insight. No Sex For Weeks

50

He says he wants sex (with you), but he doesn’t make a move. You say you want sex (with him), but you don’t make a move. So how about this: The next few times you want sex, NSFW, make a move. If he fucks you two out of three times, maybe he was telling you the truth when he said he’d like you to make the first move. If he rebuffs you every time, then he doesn’t want to have sex with you – and you’ll have to make a move to end this relationship. I’m a youngish man who’s been in a loving relationship with an older woman for a year. The only area where the age difference comes into play is largely unspoken between us – she wants kids. All of her friends are having kids, and she’s nearing the end of her childbearing years. I’m nowhere near ready, and I sometimes question whether I want to be monogamous to any one person for life. We never discuss it, but I can tell how deeply this bothers her and that in her ideal world, I’d be ready to start planning a future with her. I’m racked with guilt at the possibility that by the time I’m ready for that level of commitment (or, worse, by the time I realize I never will be), she’ll be biologically incapable of having kids, which is really important to her. This is all complicated by the fact that this is easily the most loving, trusting, respectful relationship I’ve ever been in. Bond Afflicted By Years Speak, BABY: “Look, you want kids. I’m not ready, and I’m not sure I’ll ever be ready. Also, I’m not sure about lifelong monogamy. If we need to part ways so you can find someone who wants the same things you do and wants them now, I’ll be devastated but I’ll understand.” I’m a 22-year-old woman living in Central Asia doing development work. There are 14 other expats within an hour or two of me, but eight of them are in relationships. I’ve always been the “single friend,” and normally I don’t mind. But being surrounded by couples right now has been a tax on my mental health. I know I’m young and should be focusing on this amazing opportunity and my career, but I can’t help but feel lonely at times, especially since I can’t speak the local language well and these 14 other people are the only ones near me who speak English. What should I do? Single Anonymous Dame Math. Eight of the 14 nearby Englishspeaking expats are in relationships. That means six nearby expats are single like you, SAD. It’s not a lot of people to choose from in real numbers, I realize, but as a percentage – 40 percent of nearby expats are single – it’s statistically significant, as the social scientists say. Focus on this opportunity,

“QUICKIES”

focus on your career, and focus on that statistically significant number of nearby singles. My husband and I listen to your podcast, and we’ve become a little more open about our wants and needs as a result. Anyway, on two recent occasions, he shaved his pubes. Both times, I told him it was a turnoff. Like, I literally dried up when I saw it. He said he understood, yet now he’s about to take a trip with friends and he’s done it again. Chest too this time. Assuming he’s telling the truth and this manscaping effort is not about other women (eye roll), is it fair to me? Can I ask him to stop? Shouldn’t he want to stop if it’s a turnoff for me? Do I have to be GGG on this too? Not Into Bald Balls I feel your pain – but it’s not hair removal that’s an issue in my relationship, but hair growth. My husband would like to have a mustache. It’s his face (those are your husband’s balls), and he can do what he wants with his face (your husband can do what he wants with his balls). But I can do what I want with my face, and my face doesn’t touch his when there’s a mustache on it. Similarly, NIBB, you’re not obligated to touch your husband and/or his junk when he’s pubeless. When I’m out of town, my husband will grow a mustache, and I don’t complain or temporarily unfollow him on Instagram. So long as your husband’s balls/crotch/chest are smooth only when they’re far from you, it shouldn’t be an issue in your marriage – unlike the fact that you think he might be fucking another woman (maybe one who’s into bald balls?) or thinking about fucking other women. That’s an issue you’re going to want to address. CONFIDENTIAL TO EVERYONE IN TORONTO: You’re in my thoughts, aka atheist prayers.
