On May 18, we reported that Cocoa Beach city leaders voted in favor of allowing leashed and registered dogs on a designated strip of sand for a six-month trial period starting July 15. The motion allows dogs only between Fourth Street and 16th Street, and they must be on a six-foot leash and wear tags showing their vaccinations are up to date. @Katie March Not good. Guess what dogs don’t do? Leave cigarette butts and potato chip bags and plastic bottles and Styrofoam coolers all over the beach that the tide will take out. @Bree Lutzow Animals being allowed outside? What is this world coming to. @Ray Ray The earth isn’t just for humans. We all have to share it. On May 18, we reported that Colonial Lanes – an Orlando establishment since

1959 –will close for good instead of undergoing a “major remodel,” as they had previously stated. The bowling alley was purchased last February by a subsidiary of Titan Properties, who filed plans with the city of Orlando to turn it into a self-storage facility. You now have until Thursday, May 24, to knock down a few pins and saddle up at the Lounge one last time. @Katie March Can’t wait to see what generic garbage they replace it with, considering Orlando’s concept of “progress” seems to be structured around taking away all semblance of character. @Greg Smith Another storage facility is exactly what we need. Ayala says Orange-Osceola office won’t seek bail for minor crimes: Orange-Osceola State Attorney Aramis Ayala says

prosecutors under her administration will no longer ask judges to set bail for people charged with minor crimes. The office will recommend non-monetary release for people who don’t present a threat of violence or flight risk starting June 1. Prosecutors in the Ninth Judicial Circuit will advocate for people who are arrested for low-level offenses to be released on their own recognizance. “Economic bias has no place in our justice system,” Ayala said in a statement. “By primarily relying on money, our bail system has created a poverty penalty that unjustifiably discriminates against those without resources to pay.”

Orlando, Maitland join lawsuit against Florida ban on local gun laws: Orlando and Maitland are among 10 cities to join a lawsuit

last week that challenges a state ban on local gun restrictions. In Florida, elected municipal officials who pass gun regulations can be removed from office by the governor, personally sued and fined up to $5,000. The original lawsuit was filed last month by 10 South Florida cities that allege the statute is “invalid and unconstitutional” because the extreme penalties deter local officials from considering reasonable gun regulations. Orlando and Maitland joined eight other Florida cities last week in an amended complaint, bringing the total number of participating cities to 20.

‘Minnie Van’ drivers at Disney World can join Orlando union: “Minnie Van” drivers who work at Walt Disney World Resort can now

join Teamsters Local 385 in Orlando. The red polka-dot “Minnie Vans” are a partnership between Lyft and Disney – drivers are summoned by guests using the Lyft app. Disney had previously argued Teamsters could not represent these drivers because the union waived its right to represent workers not mentioned in a previous contract. The National Labor Relations Board disagreed, ruling that the waiver isn’t applicable to these drivers because their jobs didn’t exist when the contract was negotiated.

Attorney General Pam Bondi sues major opioid manufacturers: Florida’s attorney general announced last week that

the state is suing five of the nation’s largest manufacturers and distributors of opioids. The lawsuit alleges drug manufacturers funded front groups to promote their “dangerous products,” while distributors used deceptive marketing. “Distributors failed in their duties under Florida law to stop the suspiciously high orders of opioids they received,” the complaint said. “Instead, the distributors placed profit over safety and continued filling the suspicious opioid orders.” Bondi called it “the most comprehensive lawsuit in the country,” adding that she would “not tolerate anyone profiting from the pain and suffering of Floridians.” Trump University doesn’t count though, right?

Publix thinks self-proclaimed ‘NRA sellout’ Adam Putnam is worth about 75,000 chicken tender subs:

The much-loved Florida grocery chain has donated a record $670,000 to Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam’s campaigns, which is the equivalent of around 74,527 chicken tender Pub subs, according to some fancy math from the Tampa Bay Times. By supporting Putnam, though, Publix is supporting a candidate who’s a self-described “proud NRA sellout,” who has consistently attempted to loosen state gun restrictions. After calls for a boycott of the store, Publix clarified on Twitter that it doesn’t support the gun lobby. “Supporting our associates, customers and communities is always top of mind for Publix, especially when tragedies strike like natural disasters and gun violence,” the company said. “When we are deciding which political candidates to financially support during an election, we consider a number of factors. ummertime Florida is steamy most days, and downright miserable on others. But with great weather comes great responsibility to cool off in all the natural watering holes the Sunshine State has to offer.

SPRINGS There’s something forgiving about basking in Florida’s cool springs, whether we’re talking about just bobbing around, floating atop or paddling across these beautiful bodies of water. Active outdoorsy aficionados should check out Wekiwa Springs State Park (1800 Wekiwa Circle, Apopka) for canoeing and kayaking amid the easygoing nature vibe and abundant wildlife scenery. But if gators aren’t your thing, you might want to simply take advantage the 13 miles of trails by hiking, bicycling or horseback riding. Just be sure to mind the signs.

If leisure is your sunny-season cup of tea, go tubing down Rock Springs Run in Kelly Park (400 E. Kelly Park Road, Apopka). This place is popular, though – and for good reason. Make sure to come out early, because guests are turned away if the park’s too full. And last but not least, you can swim, canoe, picnic or camp overnight at Juniper Springs (26701 E. State Road 40, Silver Springs) in the pinewoods of Ocala National Forest. Explore the Florida Trail while you’re at it, because it’s accessible from the park entrance.

WATER PARKS As they say: Grip it and rip it. That most definitely goes for what these water parks have to offer.

Take the newest addition, Universal Orlando’s Volcano Bay, for example: This theme park splits 18 different rides into four sections, including a 200-foot-tall volcano called Krakatau that features indoor water slides and several different holler-worthy rides to boot. Of course, there’s always SeaWorld Orlando’s Aquatica, where you can take a tube plunge through the underwater home of some black-and-white Commerson’s dolphins – and that’s not even counting the other cool perks, such as swimming lessons for kids provided by American Red Cross. (Plus, SeaWorld Orlando’s happy hour is killer, and on Fridays through the summer, you get two free 7-ounce beers, too.) And yet some are looking to kick back a bit more. For you, we suggest Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park, where you can wind your way along SUMMER GUIDE • orlandoweekly.com

BEACHES There’s not much to explain when it comes to what makes a good beach; the wind and the sticky salt air on your face just speaks for itself. There are those folks who are partial to the Atlantic Ocean – such as New Smyrna Beach, which is known as a relaxing surf hub, or Flagler Beach, which finally brought its iconic pier back to life. (Careful, though: Alcohol isn’t allowed on either beach and local patrols have been known to crack down.) Then there are the Gulf of Mexico lovers who would prefer something along the lines of Siesta Beach, which is just down the road from Sarasota. This sleepy yet vibrant portion of Siesta Key provides both the white sand aesthetic as well as the rolling good times that come with the opportunity to lazily drink and sun the day away. ●

Much like the oft-tweeted instructions on how to get a “bikini body” (Step 1: Have a body. Step 2: Buy a bikini. Step 3: Put it on), we say the only thing that makes a book a “beach read” is your desire to read it on the beach. So you’ll find no lowered standards or so-called guilty pleasures here – just a handful of newish books that deserve your eyeballs, wherever you’re flipping the pages. Made for Love (by Alissa Nutting; Ecco, 320 pages) Alissa Nutting’s first novel, Tampa, was inspired by the student-seducing middle-school teacher Debra Lafave, and it introduced readers to Nutting’s singular voice: a quease-inducing mix of hard and soft, sentimental and solipsistic. Made for Love’s protagonist, Hazel, is a thousand times more likable (not that that’s a prerequisite for a good book) but the same blindness to others’ needs and desires is present in all of the characters this time – while Hazel can sometimes be a bit self-centered, her husband, father and lover display the trait in degrees ranging from absent-minded to sociopathic. Also like Tampa, Made for Love is set in Florida; and like Tampa,

Made for Love has a ripped-from-the-headlines plot – this time, our villain is a privacy-invading tech bro rather than a female sexual predator. Hmm, who could that (cough, Zucker)be(rg)?

50 Queer Music Icons Who Changed the World: A Celebration of LGBTQ+ Legends (by Will Larnach-Jones, illustrated by Michelle Rosenthal; Hardie Grant Books, 110 pages) At first glance, it’s a succinct survey of several generations’ worth of queer musicians and performers who all reshaped the pop music landscape from the 1960s to today, made up of capsule bios and quirky-cute illustrations of said musicians. But what makes this book unique is that it makes a strong case for a queer pop

lineage across genres and eras – one of the first books to do so in a portable and fun fashion. And the illustrations courtesy of Michelle Rosenthal are amazing. Music fans of all ages will learn something here; and, really, seeing Frank Ocean in such close proximity to Frankie Knuckles and Jobriath does our hearts good.

Florida (by Lauren Groff; Riverhead Books, 275 pages) Fates and Furies, Lauren Groff’s 2015 novel, was every writer’s dream achievement: a wildly popular best-seller that critics also swooned for. (It was President Obama’s favorite book of that year. That’s every other MFA in the country dunked on.) While we all wait for the inevitable film version, this collection of 11 short stories will slake any thirst readers have for Sunshine State strangeness. Kirkus Reviews called Florida “a literary tour de force of precariousness set in a blistering place, a state shaped like a gun.” Fans of Karen Russell, Padgett Powell or Joy Williams should not miss this box of poison treats.

The Talented Ribkins (by Ladee Hubbard; Melville House, 304 pages) First-time novelist Ladee Hubbard took W.E.B. DuBois’ statement about “the Talented Tenth” and ran with it, envisioning a subset of African American superheroes when DuBois was coming off more like a pull-upyour-saggy-drawers crusader: “The problem of education must first of all deal with the Talented Tenth; it is the problem of developing the Best of this race that they may guide the Mass away from the contamination and death of the Worst, in their own and other races.” In The Talented Ribkins, Hubbard describes a family blessed with unusual gifts – the ability to climb walls, spit fire or make maps of places they’ve never been. The plot is a picaresque road trip through the South and through the family’s past, but it’s Hubbard’s talent that truly shines. Her audacity in choosing to retell the story of segregation and Jim Crow in Florida in this particular way should give us all hope.

Stranded in the Jungle: Jerry Nolan’s Wild Ride (by Curt Weiss; Backbeat Books, 310 pages) Even among the rogues gallery that was early NYC punk rock, there were few as roguish as New York Dolls/Heartbreakers drummer and Johnny Thunders’ musical soulmate Jerry Nolan. This book shines the spotlight, finally, on Nolan, who is usually overlooked amid the Johnny Thunders-David Johansen hubbub surrounding the too-much-too-soon Dolls. An essentially New York story – though with an ultimately tragic ending – Jerry Nolan was one of the most important figures, besides Thunders, in the intermingling of first-wave NYC and U.K. punk. Nolan’s contributions to the look and

sound – and addictions – of punk rock can’t be underestimated, and his hard-knock life is compelling but (yep) heartbreaking reading. This book tells his story unflinchingly and wonderfully, with contributions from comrades like Chris Stein.

The Despair of Monkeys and Other Trifles: A Memoir (by Francoise Hardy, translated by Jon E. Graham; Feral House, 311 pages) It’s a sad coincidence that Feral House guiding light Adam Parfrey passed away right before the release of this book. With his FH imprint, Parfrey blazed a singular trail through publishing, infuriating and delighting in equal measure, and this title is no exception to that mission. An autobiography of yé-yé sensation and immortal chanteuse Francoise Hardy, Despair dives deep beneath the glamorous mystique, with the usually secretive Hardy telling her story on her own terms. As an actress, singer or fashion icon, Hardy has enthralled and inspired generations of musicians and creatives, and continues to stay vibrant and vital decades after her first 1960s hits. Her story is finally told. And she did it all, ahem, her way. arts@orlandoweekly.com

ummertime and the livin’ is easy? Maybe not so much in Florida. Whether you’ve got that summertime sadness, you’re feeling cooped up by rainshowers, or you’re just not built to live in subtropical heat and humidity, a li’l drinkie will take the edge off. These three cocktails (well, two cocktails, one mocktail) are light, modern and easy to make.

’Booch 75 Replace the champagne in a traditional French 75 with kombucha and get half the hangover, double the good gut bacteria. (I mean, the alcohol will probably kill the probiotics, but whatever.) For a lighter – and dare we say beach-friendlier? – cocktail, skip the gin and just mix Aperol into your ’booch.

1/2 ounce Aperol 1/2 ounce gin 1/4 ounce simple syrup 2 ounces plain or ginger kombucha 3 dashes blood-orange bitters

In an ice-filled mixing glass, combine Aperol, gin and simple syrup. Stir, then strain into a chilled flute, top with kombucha and bitters, and garnish with citrus peel of your choice (I like pomelo or tangerine).

Unlike the old-style piña colada, this fruity, herbal take won’t make you feel weighed down with sugar and cream, nor will it enable your plans to cheat on your partner.

This recipe is infinitely substitute-friendly – use any fruits you prefer, or whatever looks fresh at the market (or in your yard). The syrup recipe makes enough to use in drinks for a week or so.

2 1/2 ounces gold rum 1/2 ounce Chartreuse 1/2 ounce brown sugar simple syrup 3 ounces coconut milk 1/4 ripe avocado Double handful of frozen pineapple chunks (roughly 4 ounces by weight) • Handful each fresh basil and mint Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. (The herbs will show as green flecks, and that’s OK – don’t overblend or use a Vitamix or other super powerful blender, because the motor will melt the drink.) Pour into a big glass or Mason jar and serve with a straw.

2 tablespoons herbal strawberry syrup 1 slice of blood orange 2 Luxardo cherries sparkling water

First, make the syrup: roughly chop 8 ounces of strawberries and add to a saucepan with a cup of sugar; a 3-inch piece of ginger, grated; four sprigs of fresh thyme and 10 ounces of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for about 20 minutes. Strain out the solids, then boil again until thickened and reduced by half. Allow to cool. Place a blood orange slice at the bottom of a coupe glass and muddle lightly. Add syrup and top with sparkling water; garnish with two cherries on a pick.

y the time you read this, this year’s Orlando Fringe will be rounding the final turn, heading into its final weekend and award-oriented wrap-up. In the Dark is bloody brilliant In the beginning, there was darkness over the face of the Silver Venue. Quite a bit of darkness, actually. After a while, someone (not God, but maybe one of his minions) said, “Ready!” and there was light, and a whoosh. And it was, as the English say, bloody brilliant. U.K. physical comedy duo James & Jamesy – aka Aaron Malkin and Alastair Knowles – have brought their award-winning British buffoonery back to Orlando with In the Dark, but this time they’ve left

their tea-sipping antics behind for something more abstract and ineffable. Wearing white faces and gray suits, with the glowing lampshades attached to their heads providing the only illumination, the perplexed pair encounter each other in a void on the cusp of Creation. Through an elliptical series of absurd audience-participation interactions, they attempt to puzzle out the existential answers to Who? When? Where? Why? and WTF? In the Dark is like a lost Samuel Beckett classic co-written with Douglas Adams and performed by a couple of Cirque du Soleil clowns. (If you know my tastes, you know that’s a high compliment.) Sweet and surreal at the same time, it’s less literal than their previous shows but more literary, and in my opinion even more entertaining. – SK (Silver Venue, 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24; 5:15 p.m. Friday, May 25; 3:45 p.m. Sunday, May 27) Title and Deed stuns with existential intensity David Lee is no stranger to Fringe success. He won the Critic’s Choice award for best male performance in 2015, a Fringe Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 and

a Patrons Pick prize back in 2011 for Thom Pain (based on nothing). So he’s returning to Fringe with perhaps the highest expectations of any performer not named Chase Padgett. Lee does not disappoint. This year Lee is again embracing the existential work of New York playwright Will Eno, who also authored Thom Pain, a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in drama. Title and Deed, which made its OffBroadway debut in 2012, focuses on an oddly haunted man who describes himself as a foreigner, a newcomer to our country (or perhaps our plane of existence), a “celebrant” and a “homesick orphan fuck.” Not wholly familiar with our language, this stranger strings words together like bedraggled tinsel garlands on Samuel Beckett’s Christmas tree. The result is a prose that’s not easily understood but always appreciated. It’s tough to imagine any Orlando performer more suited to the monologue than Lee, whose nearly unbearable intensity – almost too much to bear for him as well as us – will again make him a contender for a Fringe award. Though the material demands patience, Lee (who also directs) brings it fully alive as if he were inventing the sometimes absurdist, sometimes stream-of-consciousness script on the spot. “Don’t walk out on me,” Lee asks the audience in one of the play’s many metatheatrical moments. “Don’t hate me.” Don’t worry, David. There’s no chance of that. – CM (Yellow Venue, 5:15 p.m. Thursday, May 24; 9 p.m. Friday, May 25; 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 26; 11:30 a.m. Sunday, May 27) An Excruciatingly Ordinary Toy Theater Show is, in fact, extraordinary Pittsburgh puppeteer Zach Dorn is nervous to the point of neurosis about his Orlando Fringe appearance. But even if he gets off to an awkward start by flossing popcorn from his teeth for an opener, stick with him and you’ll be rewarded with one of the most wonderfully whacked-out experiences of this year’s festival. In An Excruciatingly Ordinary Toy Theater Show Dorn transforms anecdotes from his everyday life into pint-sized performances, which play out on flipbooks and miniature stages he’s made out of cardboard; the results resemble a pop-up storybook for clinically insane children. Dorn’s surreal skits – which are projected on the theater’s upstage wall behind him – involve eating burritos in a strip-club parking lot, feeding sauerkraut to Chloe Sevigny, and his love/hate relationship with YouTube; the briefest, most inexplicable bit is simply a wind-up turtle gyrating to Olivia SUMMER GUIDE • orlandoweekly.com

Newton-John. Even if he appears at first to be a hot mess, Dorn’s precision in livestreaming his ingenious dioramas demonstrates a remarkable dedication to his craft. In his finale, Dorn describes an obscure backstage video of Stevie Nicks as “a moment we weren’t meant to see, and probably don’t deserve.” The same could be said about his exquisite, extraordinary show. – SK (Black Venue, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23; 6 p.m. Friday, May 25; 3 p.m. Saturday, May 26; 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 27) Kevin, King of Egypt is obsessivelycompulsively watchable Mr. Kevin Haggerty (Rob Gee) is an articulate, charismatic man surrounded by idiots who only want to pump him full of medication, so that pharmaceutical companies can get rich and Kevin can be as depressed as everyone around him. It would be impossible not to be outraged by the injustice of his plight, except for one thing: Kevin is a delusional mental patient who insists he’s the reincarnation of Ramses II, and persists in escaping from involuntary hospitalization. While on the lam, Kevin detours from his ascension to the Egyptian throne in order to rescue – or possibly kidnap – a lost little girl, and finds a piece of himself in the process. Kevin, King of Egypt is the final chapter in a mental health-themed trilogy from psychiatric nurse-turned-slam poet Rob Gee, who previously performed Fruitcake and last year’s Forget Me Not at Orlando Fringe to great acclaim. Here, Gee (under the briskly paced direction of Tara Garther) plays the title character, plus a 7-Eleven security guard, an alcoholic widower and several others, subtly shifting his voice and posture with each persona in this obsessively-compulsively watchable one-man performance. This show forgoes Forget Me Not’s Seussian rhyme schemes, instead slipping almost imperceptibly between prose and free verse, and it trades the whodunit plotting for an intimate family drama. But Kevin is still crammed with Gee’s trademark mixture of killer wit and medical commentary (“Half the patients think they’re Jesus, but the doctors all think they’re God”) wrapped around his inimitable off-kilter physicality, which is amped up to a manic 11 for this role. CREATIVE LOAFING College Park boîte’s wholly gratifying tartines are its bread and butter BY FAIYAZ KARA

Southern accents come in the form of a cornmeal-fried shrimp tartine ($11 half or $16 full) with tangy remoulade, and, from the list of mains, buttermilk-fried chicken ($18) with garlic-herb smashed fingerling potatoes, cinnamon-glazed baby carrots and spicy maple syrup. On this visit, we stuck to more Gallic presentations like Marseilles-style middleneck clams ($18) in a spicy white wine broth with bacon lardons, fennel and charred tomatoes. Dipping grilled baguette slices into the beautiful broth is reason enough to order the dish, though the delicate flavor of the clams got a little lost amid all the competing flavors. If you were a regular at Croissant Gourmet, then you don’t have to question the quality of desserts – they’re bound to be delectable, no matter what’s offered. We ended with a delightful Normandie apple tart ($8) served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in its center along with a dollop of crème anglaise topped with apple slices. I-Drive Peruvian restaurant serves up the standards in decent enough fashion, but there’s very little here that sets it apart. THIS WEEK: Beast As Bart Simpson once told us, every woman has a soft spot for a good-lookin’ rebel who plays by his own rules. But what if the outlaw paramour you’ve landed yourself might also be the serial killer who’s terrorizing your quiet English community? Hey, sacrifices are what make a relationship work, right? This romantic psychodrama turns on just such a premise, and even adds an extra detail to reinforce its point about personal obsession compensating for a multitude of sins: The bad-boy boyfriend in question literally reeks. Yes, as in permanent body odor. So if you’re keeping score, that’s a bunch of dead bodies and an ever-present cloud of funk in the “negatives” category. But really, he’s just such a good listener. (R) Solo: A Star Wars Story “Competent,” says Entertainment Weekly – and that might be music to the mouse ears of everyone at Disney, which has been staving off one PR disaster after another since this spin-off/ prequel/whatever was first announced. The casting of Alden Ehrenreich as a young

Han Solo was met with some concern; then directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were bounced from the project, replaced during shooting by ol’ Opie Cunningham himself, Ron Howard. The whole undertaking appeared so skin-of-the-teeth that a clickbait article recently appeared with the headline “The moment Ron Howard knew he’d be able to finish Solo.” Um, you’d like to think it was the moment he signed the contracts, no? Now the finished (hopefully) project is headed to theaters worldwide, poised to teach us how Han became best buddies with Chewbacca, how he first met Lando Calrissian, and all the other stuff you used to enjoy being able to just imagine. In this era of the 12-hour news cycle, it’s perhaps not surprising that the major point of interest in the film has become the appearance of Donald Glover, who is currently enjoying his honeymoon period as a cultural darling before everybody figures out he’s just as pretentious and delusional as Kanye, but in the opposite direction. This is Alderaan! (PG-13)

Anything Once an avatar of righteous outness, Matt Bomer is suddenly taking a whole bunch of flak for having accepted the role of a trans woman who helps a Southern widower learn to live again. Only trans people should play trans people, the argument goes, and I get it – at least in theory. Parts for minorities are few and far between, so trans characters should be played by trans actors, Asian characters should be played by Asian actors, and characters who have trouble conveying human emotion should always be portrayed by Keanu Reeves. Perhaps the most curious complaint came from Indiewire, which suggested that Bomer couldn’t be convincing as trans because his jawline is too strong (!). Listen, guys: I’m friends with a trans woman who looks like a gene splice of everybody who ever appeared in a David Lee Roth video, particularly Dave. And if you want to tell her she’s not a woman because her features are too chiseled … well, I’ll hold your coat. (R)

This week, one of the wildest, most storied Orlando live traditions gets revisited, an area breakout makes a surprise return and a new young local emerges.

Though they’ve calmed down quite a bit, Guided by Voices’ Orlando shows are the stuff of legend. Around the turn of the millennium, their in-town appearances incited the kind of wildness that bests even the most extreme shows. Oh, the things I saw. Shit, the things I did. The only reason the memories haven’t been washed away by the river of alcohol I drank at those shows is because of the sheer luridness of those beer-sprayed nights. And even with that level of consumption, I ended up wearing as much as I drank. Consequently, frontman Robert Pollard had to upgrade his stage wardrobe in the early 2000s to a rain poncho and goggles. The whole shitshow was like those paintings of the infamous Roman bacchanals, except in full motion and set to a rock soundtrack. And the most subversive part? It was all for a melodic indie rock band. That monkey-house scene, however, is no more. No question, GBV fans here are still more spirited than indie rock crowds half their age, but stuff like that can’t last forever. The band’s famous beer tub is gone, replaced now by a slightly more sensible beach cooler. But the sound and the heart, thankfully, beat on. What I saw onstage this time was a refreshed Guided by Voices lineup that can kick it out with vim, commitment

and endurance. How many bands bash it out with barely a pause for over two hours straight and then drop in with an encore for another breathless half-hour? Now, how many of those are powered by a sexagenarian? Exactly. Pollard couldn’t help but reminisce a little about those old Orlando shows, though. But like he said about all that beer, “I like it better in you than on me.” Even though those fabled shows are past, this is anything but a band ready for pasture. They’re still indie rock’s goodtime band and still 100 percent rock & roll. They’re both survivors and saviors. And they are still without peer. GBV forever.

AMERICAN PLEASURE CLUB AND JULEE BRUISE, MAY 17, SOUNDBAR

Baltimore’s American Pleasure Club (formerly known as Teen Suicide) are a magpie of a band that pluck from a spectrum of styles, from lo-fi to punk to electronic to whatever. All of it’s used to

invoke a dizzying storm around the eternally downcast singing of Sam Ray. But, while their motley palette can feel exploratory on record, their live sound is unified and in the pocket. When they hit their noisy peaks, the band show the fullness and force with which they can flex their emotion. Even though Ray likes to keep it on a bummer frequency, he surrounds himself with a range of sounds and ideas that’s surprisingly wide and vivid. An interesting postscript: One especially notable member of the band is Kitty, the breakout Daytona rap artist who’s distinguished herself as both an internet phenom and a writer. I knew nothing of her association with the band walking in so I had to look that shit up. In case you’re as clueless as I was, she and Sam Ray are married and she joined the band this year on electronics and backup vocals. So that was a nice local surprise. Opening was Julee Bruise, the solo vehicle of Julia Joyce from local twee-pop band TV Dinner. Her own confessional pop strikes a slightly different tone than TV Dinner, working a distinctly raw personal edge. This guise shows that Joyce is marching directly in the footsteps laid down by some of the great indie women of the last quarter-century. Her singing is unflinchingly vulnerable, but Joyce traces the contours of emotion with such nakedness and pathos that she plies that vulnerability into power. Art Night Out: The Art of Drag with Sorcha Mercy ART

Drag, at its best, combines elements of performance art, visual art, body transformation and modification, dance, and sly subversion of and homage to pop culture, which can be every bit as breathtaking and challenging as a painting or a sculpture. And since Orlando’s drag scene is, objectively, in a boom period, why not pull this living, breathing art out of the club and into a museum? To that end, OMA and Sorcha Mercy from local troupe Ladyboys of the Peek-A-Boo Lounge pull back the curtain on the labor behind total glamor. The preparation and transformation for a drag performance requires intense creativity and discipline and practice, and Mercy will provide attendees with a glimpse of that as she transforms a model into a drag goddess right in front of you, all while giving tips and tricks. CFAM Summer Exhibitions ART

OUR PICKS FOR THE BEST EVENTS THIS WEEK 92

This summer’s shows at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum are a bit of a mixed bag – but we mean that in the Brach’s Pick-a-Mix way (all your favorites!), not the store-brand assorted nuts way (one macadamia, three cashews and a bunch of stale pecans). The four exhibitions opening Thursday are Margaret Bourke-White’s Different World, The Myers Legacy: Dutch and Flemish Paintings From the Collection, Forging Modern American Identities: Recent Acquisitions and Trong Gia Nguyen: My Myopia. The Bourke-White photographs will probably see the most visitors, simply by dint of her relative fame as a World War II photojournalist, but overlooking Nguyen’s sculptures, small meditations on security, would be a mistake. (Lucky, then, that they’re in the same building.) The Myers Legacy and Forging Modern American Identities neatly bookend the history of the institution – John C. Myers’ heirs’ significant donation to CFAM means it owns the only Old Masters collection in Orlando, while Forging displays a few of the latest acquisitions bestowed by Ted and Barbara Alfond, whose gifts are turning CFAM into a powerhouse of 20th-century art. Central Florida’s BBQ Blowout EVENTS

Kicking off the summer by sampling dozens of professional and amateur takes on barbecue sounds great. But that’s only half the draw of Oviedo’s sixth annual Central Florida’s BBQ Blowout. Now located at Center Lake Park instead of the Oviedo Mall, the event offers a full day of live music, the Kid-Que kids barbecue competition (à la MasterChef Junior), and a huge Kids Zone area with inflatable slides and bounce houses. Orlando Carnival Downtown EVENTS

The Orlando Carnival Downtown festival has been infusing the joys of Caribbean culture and music into Orlando for more than three decades, and this weekend will be no exception. The 31st annual festival brings pageantry, parties, art vendors and foods from Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados and other Caribbean nations. An Horse MUSIC

By the beginning of this decade, it looked like Australian indie rock duo An Horse were on the cusp of a real breakout. They were rising on a pair of critically acclaimed albums on esteemed NYC indie label Mom + Pop, a big endorsement from Tegan and Sara and even an appearance on Letterman. And then … radio silence. A five-year hiatus ensued where frontwoman Kate Cooper tended to her dying father while drummer Damon Cox played with Tancred and Kevin Devine. But, at last, they’re back. And from the triumphant burst of just-released new single “Get Out Somehow” – their first new music since 2011 – An Horse are reigniting the original embers of their noisy rock sweetness with a new sense of drive. They just kicked off a big tour with the Front Bottoms, but Orlando is lucky to have them for a full headlining show. Come urge on a deserving comeback story. It has pretty much everything you could possibly want in a convention: A ton of celebrities show up to talk about their work. Comic book writers and artists sign pretty much anything you hand them. Creative cosplayers show off amazing get-ups and don’t even charge you to take a picture with them as long as you’re polite and ask first. But the real meat and potatoes of the con is the massive vendor floor, where you can find practically anything, from vintage comics and toys to handcrafted leather armor to videogame-themed bongs. I like watersports, and I heard about a guy in a rural area who holds piss parties in his backyard. I found a mailing list for those interested in piss play, and it wasn’t long before he posted about one of these parties. People on the list talk a big game, but no one else has stepped up to host something, including me. (I would, but four neighbors look into my backyard.) The host has very simple rules for who can attend: You have to identify as a guy and wear masculine attire. I get to the party, and there were about four guys and the host. I had a good time. The host had plenty of drinks out, towels, chairs, canopies, and candles to ward off the mosquitos. I’ve been back a couple times. Everyone is friendly enough and there’s the right amount of perversion. So what’s the problem? The host. He’s loud and annoying. He insists on putting classical music on (it doesn’t set the mood very well). He tells the same lame jokes every time he’s pissing on someone. He will complain that people say they’re coming and don’t show. If you are having a moment with someone, he will invariably horn in on the action. Without being rude, I’ve tried to make it clear that we are not looking for company, but he doesn’t take the hint. It’s his party, and props to him for hosting it – but it takes the fun out of it when the host doesn’t know when to back off. I’ve gotten to the point where it’s not worth the effort to go. Do I just get over it, or say something privately? Person Exasperates Enthusiast The advice I gave a different reader about dealing with a guest horning in on the action at an orgy applies in your case: “Even kind and decent people can be terrible about taking hints – especially when doing so means getting cut out of a drunken fuckfest. So don’t hint, tell. There’s no rule of etiquette that can paper over the discomfort and awkwardness of that moment, so you’ll just have to power through it.” Swap out “drunken fuckfest” for “drenchin’ piss scene,” and the advice works – up to a point, PEE, because the person in your case who needs telling, not hinting, isn’t one of the guests, he’s the host. And he sounds like a gracious host. (I mean, drinks, towels and candles at a piss party? Swank.) But your host’s behavior sounds genuinely annoying. Hosting a sex party doesn’t give someone the right to insert himself into someone else’s scene, and stupid jokes have the power to kill the mood and murder the boners. So what do you do? Well, you could send your host an e-mail or give him a call. Thank him for the invite, let him know you appreciate the effort he goes to, and then tell him why some people say they’re coming and don’t show: You’re too loud, your music is awful, you have a bad habit of horning in

on the action, you need to learn some new jokes to tell when you’re pissing on someone (or, better yet, not tell any jokes at all). But I don’t think ticking off a list of his shortcomings is going to get you anywhere other than crossed off the invite list to future parties. So why not make your own piss party? You don’t need a big backyard – I mean, presumably your place has a tub. Supplement your tub with a couple of kiddie pools on top of some plastic tarp laid down on the living room or basement floor. Ask your guests to keep it in the tub or pool, or on the tarp. You get to choose the guys, you get to select the music, and, as host, you can lay down the law about making jokes and horning in on the action: Both are forbidden, and joketelling horner-inners will be asked to pull up their pants and leave. One last thought: If you have it in you to invest some time in getting to know this guy – if you treat him like a human being – you might be able to draw him out on something that clearly frustrates him: guys who say they’re coming to the party but don’t show. If he seems genuinely baffled, PEE, that’s your opening to ask if he’d like some constructive feedback. If he says yes, you can very gently run through your list of ways to improve his parties: no jokes, better music, and a “no horning in” rule for all (not just for him). I’m a cis woman and recently came out as a lesbian after identifying as bisexual for three years. After having sexual encounters with men and women, I finally admitted to myself that I am gay. Now that I’m finally out, I don’t want to do anything that would make me feel like denying it again. My question is, am I a bad lesbian if I sleep with a guy? I’m currently working 50 hours a week and going to school. I don’t have time for a relationship, and finding casual hookups with women is difficult. A male friend I know and trust recently propositioned me. At first I said no, but now I’m rethinking it. Sex with men doesn’t compare at all to sex with women for me. On a scale of 1 to 10, it’s definitely in the below 5 range. But my mind says, “It’s still sex!” and I would enjoy it to a point. But I worry that doing this would call my sexuality into question. I feel like I’d definitely have to hide this from my friends. And if I feel guilty enough to hide it, maybe I shouldn’t do it? Finally identifying as a lesbian was like breathing out for me. I feel way more like myself and am way happier now. But I worry that even being willing to consider this makes me seem bi. I guess I’m looking for permission and absolution. Would this make me a “bad” lesbian?
