Last week, we reported on Gov. Ron DeSantis’ announcement that barber shops, nail salons and hair salons could reopen with certain restrictions, starting on Monday, May 11. Appointments must be made in advance, and those providing services must wear gloves and a face mask. Readers sounded off.
@Janice Whalen My God, if you don’t want to get your haircut then don’t go, but don’t judge people who want to and are willing to put on a mask and go. I haven’t left the house in the last month except for errands and when I do I wear a mask and I’m not going to feel guilty about getting a haircut!
@Ernesto Gimenez At least Floridians are going to have their hair and nails nice and neat in their coffins.
@Barbara Lavigna-Gramatikas Starting Monday, my hair salon is only letting a couple in at a time and everyone wears a mask. No overlapping. You wait in the car until the chair is empty and cleaned and the customer is gone. My nail salon has always worn masks and changed out gloves, even before the pandemic. I just think it’s a step towards getting our lives back to some normalcy. If everyone follows the procedures (mask, washing hands, etc.) I don’t see why this is a bad thing.
@Monica Wire Interesting. Why not wait two more weeks and see what transpired from Phase 1? I hope I am wrong. I really want everything to be OK. No closer contact than in a salon. I think I’ll pass. @Ginny Sheffer There is NO way to avoid sharing the same air space with a client when cutting their hair! What are stylists supposed to do with the straps from your mask around your ears? Any stylist worth a damn must comb and re-comb the hair constantly between cuts, those straps are not going to work. Thank God I am retired and will not be forced to expose myself and others!
@Tiffany Bolden Not to mention people who are infected but show no symptoms and haven’t even been tested yet. @Barbara Salerno All you people that are so upset by hair and nail salons opening: Did anyone inform you that you don’t have to go?
They are following guidelines set up by the experts. Are we not to believe them if it doesn’t fit our agendas? How long do you propose to keep everything shut down? It was done to relieve hospitals, not to eradicate the virus. This virus will be with us for a while. Use common sense, wash your hands and wear a mask where necessary, and go on with your life or choose to sit in hibernation indefinitely. That’s your choice. @Carol Shirley That’s how it spread in CA. I don’t have to go, but perhaps my 91-year-old mother will be lured into one. Perhaps the people shopping for Instacart will go, then shop for me. If you believe that my choice to stay away ensures my safety, then you don’t understand the web these viruses weave from interactions. When one person is exposed, we are all exposed. @Sandy Nugent Kilian I’m a Florida senior and we are really kind of over everyone using us as an excuse to keep everyone in their homes. If seniors are healthy we’ll be fine. We’re not stupid. If we want to go out, we know the risk. Stop using us.

Restaurant critic Faiyaz Kara is proud to be a part of Orlando Weekly’s ‘ballsy, defiant narrative.’ This is one in a series of essays from friends and allies of Orlando Weekly readers in support of our recently launched Press Club. Faiyaz Kara moved to Orlando from Toronto, Canada; he became Orlando Weekly’s restaurant critic in 2006. He’s now arguably the best-known food writer in the city, and certainly the only one who still dines incognito. When I rode Toronto’s subways and streetcars; when I pounded back maple dips at Tim Hortons; when I sat in a doctor’s office awaiting free health care: The alt-weekly was there. My comfort read. I was drawn to the free-thinking columnists in NOW Magazine and Eye Weekly who helped form my worldview (not to mention I felt unbearably cool tucking one of these finger-stainers under my armpit – hey, it was the ’90s). On reading Kathryn Borel’s guerrilla wit in Eye, I thought, Why aren’t all restaurant reviews written like this? Then there was Eye managing editor William Burrill, whose gonzo irreverence and humor was as much a foundation in his writing as it was in his mayoral campaign of 1997. When I moved to Orlando in 1999, it was Orlando Weekly I tucked under my armpit, thankful that a) it didn’t stain my fingers as badly as NOW and Eye, and b) the writing wasn’t just hon-
est and progressive, but provocative and clever. Billy Manes’ “B-List,” “Blister” and “Happytown” columns became a Wednesday must-read for me. When Manes ran for mayor in 2005, I couldn’t help but think of ol’ Billy Burrill. A year later, I became Orlando Weekly’s restaurant critic and felt incredibly proud to be a part of its ballsy, defiant narrative. Today, I’m proud that it continues to hold the establishment to task by openly challenging tradition, championing the arts and giving a voice to the voiceless; proud that the commentary is as unabashedly colorful as the Orlando Weekly newspaper boxes scattered about town; and proud its words have made an indelible impact on our community. Diversity of opinion is essential to any serious metropolis and Orlando Weekly, I’m happy to report, still takes its alternative viewpoint seriously.

How would SLITHER slither into existing environScott, who slithered to Florida from Texas after overseeing the largest and most cold-blooded Medicare fraud mental and agricultural regulations? Only the bill text in U.S. history, was equally nebulous about the bill but, can reveal that, but the inclusion of the Water Resources Development Act of 1996, signed by Bill Clinton, is a well … that’s how Rick rolls. “We’ve successfully fought to fund projects that place to start. That act reauthorized the Secretary of preserve and protect our Everglades,” said Scott in a the Army to carry out “specified projects for naviga-
tion, flood control, flood and storm damage reduction, environmental preservation and restoration, shoreline erosion protection, hydropower, and hurricane damage reduction” in Florida, the District of Columbia, and 16 other states – but that barely scratches the surface of its impact on Florida’s coastlines and the Everglades. Scott mentions two past projects, “repairs to the Herbert Hoover Dike and the EAA Reservoir.” The Hoover Dike is the 143-mile earthen dam encircling nearly the entirety of Lake Okeechobee. It’s managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and has been prone to spills and breaks since they built up its levees between 1932 and 1938. The Florida Legislature and then-governor Scott approved a plan to use state dollars to speed up dike repairs by three years. The EAA Reservoir was initially planned to be completed in 2005, but was delayed to instead build it on land being acquired from U.S. Sugar closer to Lake Okeechobee. When that deal fell through, the project had nowhere to go. Work on the EAA Reservoir project isn’t scheduled to begin again until 2021. So Scott’s examples don’t exactly instill confidence. Even though the bill doesn’t address how the new directives would be funded, Shannon Estenoz, COO of the Everglades Foundation, told the Fort Myers NewsPress she’s optimistic anyway. “Invasive species are really important, I think the government has some really good people working on it and I’m really grateful to those senators for paying attention to it and wanting to empower those folks even further,” Estenoz said. Though senators Rubio and Scott claim their legislation will protect the environment, failing to fund their proposal is cause for concern. Whether the bill will help the Everglades – or the corporate interests seeking to further exploit Florida’s “River of Grass” – is yet to be seen, but unfunded mandates in the name of environmental protection are as sneaky as a Burmese python plucking white-tailed deer from the mouths of native bobcats.

BEHIND THE MASKS A Central Florida man is 3D-printing masks around the clock to provide protection for his fellow essential workers BY L ILLIA N HERN Á N D EZ C A R A BA L LO
A
s Americans, none of us are unfamiliar with the notion of chipping in to help out a friend with medical bills. GoFundMe pages for expensive surgeries and treatments are commonplace for most of us. We choose which cases are most deserving of our hard-earned money, even when we ourselves may have a few unpaid medical bills lying around. This is the standard, the “before” picture of the American healthcare system. A system that we – for whatever reason – have chosen to accept, nearly unchanged, for years. It’s a system that, up to now, has worked to keep about 72 million Americans on Medicaid and about another 44 million uninsured altogether, with the most tragic cases noted merely by a sorry shake of the head. In the new world of COVID-19, however, the weaknesses of this healthcare industry are becoming harder to ignore. Though widely addressed by now, just a few weeks ago, news feeds were filled with stories of first responders and healthcare workers on the front lines of this pandemic without proper PPE. In late March and early April, the need was so great that hospital-themed movie and TV productions were donating their medical props to the trillion-dollar healthcare industry to protect workers. The shortage was also affecting others in our communities, like non-hospital essential workers and the elderly. With not enough personal protective gear to go around, and with healthcare workers needing most of it, people started fashioning their own makeshift masks. Unfortunately, many were not safe to help contain spreading, but without resources we had no other choice. Many of us are still having a hard time finding safety products in ransacked stores or reasonably priced masks online, if they’re even in stock. Given that this pandemic is changing the world as we know it, it looks like the need for these masks is not going away any time soon. But not everyone is reacting to this with the proverbial thoughts and prayers. Some people, like Davenport local Jason Mencer, have decided to act. His Facebook fundraiser, simply called “3D Printing for Healthcare & Essential Workers,” raised well over its $2,500 projected goal and has delivered close to 500 masks to people all over the U.S. “I just saw that things weren’t getting any better,” Mencer says. “I have friends out there who are nurses with maybe only one mask to use for an entire day.” Mencer is himself an “essential worker,” employed
with Amtrak for the last 10 years, seven of them serving the customers of the south of downtown Orlando station, right by Orlando Health’s Regional Medical Center. Working so close to healthcare workers, Mencer says he has many friends in the field. He’s also got an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion to labor with his hands. Mencer did woodwork for a long time, but it was becoming a time-consuming hobby for the husband and father of a family of six. When he got his first 3D printing machine in January, he did so with the intention of making hitch covers for pickup trucks. When the world began to change, however, Mencer shifted his focus to a more humanitarian goal. “If I can help somewhere, I try to,” Mencer says. “And 3D printing has always fascinated me.” Mencer got his inspiration from a friend who works in healthcare and suggested he start the fundraiser. He then went to Make the Masks (makethemasks.com) to find the

best, most accurate way to develop an effective and safe mask. The point, he says, is to help community members who may not feel safe without masks during this time, whether they work in healthcare or not. “It’s definitely having a huge impact for people who don’t have PPE to wear and need that sense of security,”
says Deeann Daniels, a registered nurse at Winter Haven Hospital and Mencer’s friend. The work, like anything else, is not without its challenges. Mencer says that, though the machines do the main part of the work, they still need to be watched and respooled. Then the masks have to be packaged with all the necessary parts, and shipped. His wife, Erin Mencer, works full-time from home and, with the kids, doesn’t have a whole lot of time to share. However, she says she sometimes uses her lunch and break times to respool the machines for Mencer while he’s at work – just trying to do her part in any way she can, as she is a big fan of her husband’s project. “I think it’s awesome,” Erin Mencer says. “And I want to help, too, you know? People need masks and they can’t find them.” The funds, Mencer says, get poured right back into the service to advance and streamline the process. He started out with just the one 3D printing machine, which he purchased for $400, but he’s now up to four machines. He has them all running simultaneously every day. “We’re not doing this to make money,” Erin Mencer says. “A lot of people get upset out there, thinking we’re just trying to get rich. But truly the money that he receives is just going back into purchasing more supplies to keep going.” Funds have not only gone into more machines but also into purchasing different materials, parts for fixing the machines when they break, and shipping costs. Mencer’s neighbor, Genna Williamson, a homeschooling mom, has a printing machine, too, and offered to help. She replied to his post on the hyperlocal social networking app Nextdoor. She says Mencer provides her with what she needs for her machine and that it can make anywhere from four to six masks a day, if she keeps it running steady. “We just have the one machine at home chugging away as we can,” Williamson says. “He’s the workforce behind it all. I just wanted to feel like we were contributing.” Mencer has upgraded his style and technique from when he began, as he has learned a few things along the way. He can do different designs and even rainbow colors, a big hit with kids. Though the fundraiser itself has ended, Mencer is still hard at work taking orders over Facebook. He can still be reached and takes a variety of forms of payment to make donating easy and convenient for those who need masks or want to help. This community effort, Mencer says, has been received with mainly positive reactions and inspired even more people to help. In an already broken healthcare system, Erin Mencer says the point of this is to make it easier for those finding it hard to cope and stay safe during these worrisome times. “We both have full-time jobs, and we’ve been blessed where we don’t have to worry about being unemployed or without healthcare,” she says. “We’re just trying to give back, is really all it is.”

DOWN BUT NOT OUT! Orlando Fringe 2020 moves online BY S E TH KU B E R S KY
T
he COVID-19 quarantine has created a curious kind of time displacement, where weeks seem to blend together in a blur but individual days stand out in sharp relief. Decades from now, people will probably remember where they were on the day the NBA shut down and Disneyland closed, much like previous generations recall Pearl Harbor or JFK’s assassination. For those of us involved in Orlando’s arts community, March 19 will forever be burned into our minds as the day we learned the 2020 Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival had been canceled. The anticipated annual event, which was scheduled to run from May 12 through 25, normally draws tens of thousands of participants from around the world. Not only is the Fringe festival a keystone of Orlando’s cultural community, it’s a major commercial engine as well, generating more than $1.3 million for artists over the past three festivals and injecting millions more into local businesses. So there’s only one word to describe
what it felt like for executive director Alauna Friskics to make the call and cancel, only days after emailing supporters saying the show would go on: “devastating.” “Thousands of artists, audiences, volunteers, vendors, patrons, and the arts community at large depend on Fringe as the time of year we all come together,” says Friskics, explaining the dilemma they faced. “We knew it was the right thing to do in order to keep everyone safe, but actually making the decision was devastating. Orlando Fringe is one of the largest festivals in North America; we are first in the summer Fringe circuit, and we were the first to announce a cancellation. It shook the entire World Fringe community.” Fortunately, patrons have strongly supported the festival in its decision, according to marketing director Brian Sikorski: “The huge outpouring of love came seconds after the announcement. I had text messages, Facebook messages, Instagram posts, Twitter, phone calls, Facetime calls, people were spreading love and
goodwill very quickly.” Similarly, Fringe theater producer Lindsay Taylor, who is the liaison between festival staff and participating performers, says she “could tell they were disappointed but not surprised. It became clear very quickly what decisions we were going to have to make. That being said, I have been completely overwhelmed with how supportive our artists are. I think we have established a trust between our staff and the artists, so they know that we are making decisions in their best interest.” The good news is that although the Orlando Fringe is down, it’s far from out, because Friskics has fought hard to retain the Festival’s salaried staff (with the support of donors and some hard-won PPP loans) and ensure its

And from May 12-24, “Fringe Today” will present a packed schedule of live programming at facebook.com/orlandofringefestival, ranging from musical acts and midnight talk shows to mixology lessons; you can even catch Orlando Sentinel critic Matt Palm and myself discussing our past reviews in a rare joint appearance on May 13. Many of these offerings are free; patrons are encouraged to tip performers, as well as purchase Fringe merchandise or donate online to support the Festival. [See pages 14-15 for the complete schedule.] “My goal for ‘Fringe Today’ is to have our audiences get to see our artists in a different way – from watching tutorials of how they make their props to audience interaction experiences to learning how to do a magic trick,” says Taylor, who curated the programming. “I didn’t simply want shows streaming for hours; I wanted our artists to get an opportunity to connect with our fans, so we can all learn more about each other, and get excited for when we return.” Friskics echoes that sentiment, saying. “This is an opportunity for connection, to bring together artists and audiences. And that’s what Fringe does best.” Going digital has pushed some artists to radically reconceptualize their shows. A.J. Pratts, whose sold-out PeeVira’s SCAREavan SingAlongs squeezed Fringe patrons into a cargo van, is converting his campy karaoke kidnapping into Zoom meetings every Friday in May. “Ever since I took my first Fringe bow in 2012, Orlando Fringe has been in my heart,” says Pratts. “It has given me the gift of artistic freedom, self-identity and connection. It makes me feel like I’m part of something so much bigger than all of us. With them, I belong.” Pratts decided to take his yearly Fringe show online “in hopes of keeping connection and laughter alive.” Just like the grown-up Festival, Kids Fringe has also gone digital, with live Kids Fringe Today events for the little ones every day at 3 p.m. They’re followed each day at 4 p.m. with an hour of Teen Fringe programming designed for their older siblings. “We decided to share Kids Fringe Today programming each day as an after-virtual-school treat for kids,” says Fringe education coordinator Genevieve Bernard (who’s also artistic director of Voci dance and, disclosure!, my wife). “We’re lucky to have most of the local and touring Kids Fringe artists that were booked for the May festival able to join us online. We have performances, interactive adventures and workshops that the whole family can enjoy together.” Social distancing may be making this the strangest May in memory, but it won’t silence the spirit of the Fringe. Instead, the Fringe faithful will honor the event from the safety of home – while looking forward to the inevitable avalanche of virus-inspired shows at next year’s milestone 30th festival. “My hope is artists can use this time to write and create, and that we will see an explosion of new ideas on the stage once we are on the other side of this,” Friskics says. “One thing is true: We will persevere. It may take a while for people to feel comfortable mass gathering, but in time it will happen. And Fringe will be here to mend the community back together.”

French-Viet patisserie blesses Mills 50 with beautiful baguettes and baked goods BY FAIYAZ KARA
A
good banh mi is surely a benefit of living in Orlando – and Paris too, no doubt – but Paris Banh Mi right here on East Colonial Drive is quite unlike the others. In Orlando, that is. For one, owner Hien Tran is a patissier with some serious baking cred, having graduated from Paris’s École de Boulangerie et de Pâtisserie and earning certificates of distinction at the École Gastronomique Bellouet Conseil pastry school. His wife, Doan Nguyen, ran a trio of banh mi shops in Vietnam and, together, the duo serves some mighty fine sandwiches and pastries out of their sprawling Mills 50 bakery. They reopened Paris Banh Mi on April 25 but with a limited menu, so you’ll have to wait a week or two to enjoy savories like beef stew ($9) and popcorn chicken ($5). When you do walk in, wear a mask. Trust me, it won’t hinder your enjoyment any; the glorious scents of baked goods have a way of sneaking through protective face coverings.
For banh mi enthusiasts, the aroma and the snap, crackle and shhhh of a freshly baked baguette is a beautiful thing, and the loaves here are that – beautiful. All the more so when dolled up with porcine cuts ( jambon, pork rolls and grilled pork), frilled with cilantro, crunched with pickled daikon, carrots and jalapeños, and layered above a creamy spread of pork liver pâté. The cost for this “special combination” sammie? A paltry $5.50. A poultry banh mi with shredded chicken can be had for $5. It’s plenty gratifying, sure, but not quite as rich and luxuriant as the porkier numbers. For the same price, a veg version with stir-fried tofu is a plant-based pleasure ( just hold off on the mayo if you’re vegan).
And it’s all thanks to that bread, mesdames, messieurs et citoyens. You could put boiled shoe between that baguette and it’d make a decent sandwich. Just remove the heel and laces before you do. Needless to say, you’d do well to purchase a loaf ($2.50) or two while you’re here. I ripped into one immediately after downing a banh mi for lunch and scooped some creamy rapsflower blossom honey I had in my pantry with it. That was pre-dessert. Dessert-dessert comprised exquisite bites of a “chocolate trilogy” cake ($6), strawberry cheesecake ($6) and opéra gâteau ($5), a coffee-soaked almond sponge cake. I bloody well caked it on, I did. I even dreamt of ravaging a moussey raspberry-topped nocturne cake ($5) but, turns out, that was no dream (burp). Flavored teas, milk teas and slushies are also a big sell here, though we still prefer the cheese tea and fruits tea from Royaltea around the corner. Croissants, naturally, are another featured item at Paris Banh Mi. The verdict: not bad at all. And, for $2 each, not a bad price either. I don’t mean to nitpick (I did eat three of them, after all) but the croissants, while ultrasoft, could do with more flaky layering. I guess I’m still miffed about not being able to get my favorite croissants at Backhaus Bakery in Ivanhoe Village anymore, not since they moved all the way to Mount Dora. Mount Dora! Scheisse. Pardon my French. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

It was Cinco de Mayo. And Taco Tuesday. Margarita Martes, too. So naturally we craved fish camp fare: fried clam strips, hush puppies, broiled shrimp and the like. So, while Phase 1 of Florida’s Grand Reopening wreaked havoc at restaurants, I pulled up to Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen in Winter Park to satisfy the craving. The phone was off the hook, so I had to pop my head into the restaurant to let the masked hostess know I was here for my curbside pickup. As I walked back to my car, a friendly server had my order ready. Ten minutes later, I was home and digging into fried clams, broiled scallops, Florida shrimp and Atlantic cod. I popped those peppery pups into my mouth and scooped up a forkful or two of collards with it, too. Honestly, I was happy to see Reel Fish still serving – Winter Park Fish Co. just down the road has been closed throughout the pandemic. Fred Thimm, owner of Reel Fish, says they’ve survived on takeout and delivery the past two months, but only via “draconian and unsustainable methods to reduce overhead.” Thimm adds, “Guests have inspired us with their loyalty and support.” Viva la nueva normal. PREMIERES FRIDAY: Basketball County: In the Water – Why has one Maryland county produced an abnormally high number of basketball greats? The answer is right there in the title of this documentary: Fluoride! (Showtime) The Great – Elle Fanning is Catherine the Great in a satirical miniseries that plays fast and loose with history. EXIT STAGE RIGHT: Independent music venues band together to press for federal financial relief by Matthew Moyer Small independent venues are an essential ingredient for a city to have a vibrant music scene, key in giving support and a spotlight to touring bands on the rise and nurturing local performers who need a place to hone their craft. Locally, places like Soundbar, Will’s Pub, Uncle Lou’s and the Haven Lounge (and so many more) have hosted an unbelievable array of diverse and exciting sounds. Now those venues, as well as similar places all around the country, need help.

TOTAL PUNK F**KS OFF Rich Evans of Total Punk, Mayhem on Mills and Golden Pelicans leaves Orlando BY MATTHEW MOYER
I
n a news cycle that brings bad news on the hour, here’s another little kicker for you: Rich Evans – of Total Punk Records, gloriously trashy local punks Golden Pelicans, and upstart bizarro wrestling fed Mayhem on Mills – is leaving town. This week. In a sign of how bizarre this particular timeline is, the Golden Pelicans gave their farewell (for now) performance in an empty Will’s Pub on Facebook Live last Friday night. The band made the best of it, rampaging through a set of no-frills, sleazy rock with energy to spare. And even the streaming glitches were appropriate. They came on late – punk time until the end – and though there were cameras set up to capture the action, some of it ended up streaming from Will Walker’s own smartphone. DIY ’til death! Whether with Golden Pelicans, his three record labels, the Total Punk Total Fuck Off Fest, tireless show booking, Vinyl Richie’s Wiggly World of Records or the surreal Mayhem supercards, Evans worked untiringly to make Orlando an infinitely weirder and louder place. His presence will be missed. Orlando Weekly caught up with him by phone to debrief him on his coming departure: This has to be a weird note to go out on. I was thinking all of this through and it was supposed to be that the Golden Pelicans got to do our last tour in Australia. I’d come home, have a two-year anniversary show for Mayhem. And then after that, I was going to have this band from Canada come down to play my last Turnbuckle Tuesday, and then have a big show on May 16 as a send-off with Gino and the Goons, the Curlies and some other Florida bands I really like. And then … this happened.
You were interviewed in Barron’s (a sister publication of the Wall Street Journal) about coronavirus impacting live music. Is it true wrestling made you realize your Australian tour was over? It’s true. The day we landed in Australia was the day Tom Hanks announced that he had coronavirus in Australia. From the moment we landed things were doomed. The first show in Melbourne was amazing, the show in Sydney was really good. We were supposed to play a festival at the end, and that was up in the air … so we were in Sydney and we had a day off, and we went to a bar to blow off some steam. And we were sitting at the bar and somebody turned on WWE Smackdown, and there was no audience, and I was like, “If Vince McMahon is passing on an opportunity to make some bucks, this shit is serious.” And that was basically it for the tour. I never thought I’d end up in the Wall Street Journal. And you’re leaving Orlando this week. Yeah, I’m going to Portland. I’m 43 years old, I’ve lived my entire life in Florida. This has nothing to do with disliking Florida. It’s just, you only live once. The Golden Pelicans were playing a festival down in Puerto Rico last year and I met this girl there, Neisha, and we hit it off and then met up again in Memphis at Goner Fest. And she and I had been traveling back and forth between Portland and Orlando to see each other. And I was thinking, “You know, I’ve always wanted to live somewhere else,” so this seems like the perfect opportunity. All of “this” kind of complicated things, but the upside is gas will be real cheap and roads will be empty. Just me and Groucho on the road, Mad Max style. music@orlandoweekly.com
“If you take away the independent venues – the developmental venues – how do bands eventually make their way to the big leagues?” asks longtime local promoter Kyle Raker, of Norsekorea Presents. “The local, smaller, independent music venues are essential to the health and growth of our nation’s music and entertainment industries and economies.” Concert venues in Orlando have been closed since mid-March, and in Florida’s phased reopening plans, they will be among the very last things to open back up. Some clubs and halls might not be able to hang on long enough to reopen, as the pandemic – and a spotty, inconsistent federal and state government response – stretches on. The National Independent Venue Association – a newly formed coalition of independent venues and promoters – is putting out a clear and impassioned call for federal assistance. Now. NIVA, already 1,200 members strong, is asking for legislative action including tax relief and grants from the federal government to help tide them over because the bills don’t stop, even if the music does. “Every show I had scheduled from March through April were almost immediately postponed, canceled or rescheduled to the fall. … Essentially that moves any potential income from the show for me, the venue, the band and the venue’s staff to seven months in the future, and even then it’s still an ‘if.’ So it makes it difficult for everyone involved to suddenly be told, ‘You may or may not have an income at some point later this year. Maybe. Or maybe in 2021,’” explains NIVA member Raker. “I would certainly say time is of the essence right now. These local independent venues are small businesses, owned by regular people who don’t have millions of dollars cached away to keep things afloat.” Visit nivassoc.org/take-action to send an email to your Congressional representatives, asking them to take action.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Of all the signs, Tauruses are among the least likely to be egomaniacs. Most of you aren’t inclined to indulge in fits of braggadocio or outbreaks of narcissism. (I just heard one of my favorite virtuoso Taurus singers say she wasn’t a very good singer!) That’s why one of my secret agendas is to tell you how gorgeous you are, to nudge you to cultivate the confidence and pride you deserve to have. Are you ready to leap to a higher octave of self-love? I think so. In the coming weeks, please use Taurus artist Salvador Dalí’s boast as your motto: “There comes a moment in every person’s life when they realize they adore me.” GEMINI (May 21-June 20) When I was young, I had a fun-filled fling with a smart Gemini woman who years later became a highly praised author and the authorized biographer of a Nobel Prizewinning writer. Do I regret our breakup? Am I sorry I never got to enjoy her remarkable success up close? No. As amazing as she was and is, we wouldn’t have been right for each other long-term. I am content with the brief magic we created together, and have always kept her in my fond thoughts with gratitude and the wish for her to thrive. Now I invite you to do something comparable to what I just did, Gemini: Make peace with your past. Send blessings to the people who helped make you who you are. Celebrate what has actually happened in your life, and graduate forever from what might have happened but didn’t. CANCER (June 21-July 22) “You have two ways to live your life, from memory or from inspiration,” writes teacher Joe Vitale. Many of you Cancerians favor memory over inspiration to provide their primary motivation. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, although it can be a problem if you become so obsessed with memory that you distract yourself from creating new developments in your life story. But in accordance with astrological potentials and the exigencies of our Global Healing Crisis, I urge you, in the coming weeks, to mobilize yourself through a balance of memory and inspiration. I suspect you’ll be getting rich opportunities to both rework the past and dream up a future full of interesting novelty. In fact, those two imperatives will serve each other well. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Author Anne Lamott has some crucial advice for you to heed in the coming weeks. “Even when we’re most sure that love can’t conquer all,” she says, “it seems to anyway. It goes down into the rat hole with us, in the guise of our friends, and there it swells and comforts. It gives us second winds, third winds, hundredth winds.” I hope you’ll wield this truth as your secret magic in the coming weeks, Leo. Regard love not just as a sweet emotion
that makes you feel good, but as a superpower that can accomplish practical miracles. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Theologian Saint Catherine of Siena observed, “To a brave person, good and bad luck are like her left and right hand. She uses both.” The funny thing is, Virgo, that in the past you have sometimes been more adept and proactive in using your bad luck, and less skillful at capitalizing on your good luck. But from what I can tell, this curious problem has been diminishing for you in 2020 – and will continue to do so. I expect that in the coming weeks, you will welcome and harness your good luck with brisk artistry. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) “I’m curious about everything, except what people have to say about me,” says actor Sarah Jessica Parker. I think that’s an excellent strategy for you to adopt in the coming weeks. On the one hand, the whole world will be exceptionally interesting, and your ability to learn valuable lessons and acquire useful information will be at peak. On the other hand, one of the keys to getting the most out of the wealth of catalytic influences will be to cultivate nonchalance about people’s opinions of you. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) On the kids’ TV show Sesame Street, there’s a Muppet character named Count von Count. He’s a friendly vampire who loves to count things. He is 6,523,730 years old and his favorite number is 34,969 – 187 squared. The Count was “born” on Nov. 13, 1972, when he made his first appearance on the show, which means he’s a Scorpio. I propose we make him your patron saint for the next four weeks. It’s an excellent time to transform any threatening qualities you might seem to have into harmless and cordial forms of expression. It’s also a favorable phase for you to count your blessings and make plans that will contribute to your longevity. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) “No one ever found wisdom without also being a fool,” writes novelist Erica Jong. “Until you’re ready to look foolish, you’ll never have the possibility of being great,” says singer Cher. “He dares to be a fool, and that is the first step in the direction of wisdom,” declared art critic James Huneker. “Almost all new ideas have a certain aspect of foolishness when they are first produced,” observed philosopher Alfred North Whitehead. According to my analysis of astrological omens, you’re primed to prove these theories, Sagittarius. Congratulations! CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) “Few people have a treasure,” writes Nobel Prize-
winning author Alice Munro. She’s speaking metaphorically, of course – not referring to a strongbox full of gold and jewels. But I’m happy to inform you that if you don’t have a treasure, the coming months will be a favorable time to find or create it. So I’m putting you on a High Alert for Treasure. I urge you to be receptive to and hungry for it. And if you are one of those rare lucky ones who already has a treasure, I’m happy to say that you now have the power and motivation to appreciate it even more and learn how to make even better use of it. Whether you do or don’t yet have the treasure, heed these further words from Alice Munro: “You must hang onto it. You must not let yourself be waylaid, and have it taken from you.” AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) At this moment, there are 50 trillion cells in your body, and each of them is a sentient being in its own right. They act together as a community, consecrating you with their astonishing collaboration. It’s like magic! Here’s an amazing fact: Just as you communicate with dogs and cats and other animals, you can engage in dialogue with your cells. The coming weeks will be a ripe time to explore this phenomenon. Is there anything you’d like to say to the tiny creatures living in your stomach or lungs? Any information you’d love to receive from your heart or your sex organs? If you have trouble believing this is a real possibility, imagine and pretend. And have fun! PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) “A myriad of modest delights constitutes happiness,” wrote poet Charles Baudelaire. I think that definition will serve you well in the coming weeks, Pisces. According to my analysis of the astrological omens, there won’t be spectacular breakthroughs barging into your life; I expect no sublime epiphanies or radiant transformations. On the other hand, there’ll be a steady stream of small marvels if you’re receptive to such a possibility. Here’s key advice: Don’t miss the small wonders because you’re expecting and wishing for bigger splashes. ARIES (March 21-April 19) During a pandemic, is it possible to spread the news about your talents and offerings? Yes! That’s why I suggest you make sure that everyone who should know about you does indeed know about you. To mobilize your efforts and stimulate your imagination, I came up with 10 colorful titles for you to use to describe yourself on your résumé or in promotional materials or during conversations with potential helpers. 1) Fire-Maker, 2) Seed-Sower, 3) Brisk Instigator, 4) Hope Fiend, 5) Gap Leaper, 6) Fertility Aficionado, 7) Gleam Finder, 8) Launch Catalyst, 9) Chief Improviser and 10) Change Artist.

“CHANGE THE LOCKS”
It’s taken a lot to do this, but here goes. I am a 38-year-old gay man. I have been dating this guy for a year and 10 months. It’s been a lot of work. He cheated on me numerous times and he lives with me and doesn’t work and I’ve been taking care of him for seven months now. He always accuses me of cheating or finds something to blame me for. For the past four months he has been accusing me of playing games by conspiring to make him hear voices. If I look up at the ceiling or look around he says I am communicating with “them.” I keep telling him I do not hear or see anything but he insists that I am lying. He also says I put a curse on him. One day he packed his bags and said he had enough and walked out. He said I was not being loyal. This is a man who has been doing coke since the age of 14 and he is now 43 years old. He does meth and whatever else. He said until I come clean about hearing the voices too and admit I cast some sort a spell on him, he won’t talk to me or see me. Mental illness runs in his family and one sibling already committed suicide. He didn’t want professional help because, he says, “I am too smart for that.” I’m hurt and angry and want some advice. ANY ADVICE. Please. Desperate For Answers I don’t see the problem. A delusional and potentially dangerous drug addict with mental health issues who refuses to get help packed his bags and walked out of your life. Yahtzee, DFA, you win. It was his presence in your life (and your apartment) that was the problem, and your boyfriend – your ex-boyfriend – just solved it for you. Block his number, change your locks and pray he forgets your address. You might wanna seek some professional help yourself. You need to get to the bottom of why you wasted nearly two years on this asshole. Being alone can’t be worse than being with someone who cheats on you and then accuses you of cheating – to say nothing of someone who abuses drugs, hears voices and makes other irrational/ delusional accusations. He wasn’t just a danger to himself, DFA, he was a danger to you. He’s out of your apartment – now you need to get him out of your head. About a month ago I broke up with my boyfriend after I found out was cheating on me. Long before we broke up I freaked out about a rash and looking back I think it was probably herpes all along. I found out for sure three days ago and I’m honestly thinking about not telling him. He doesn’t show any symptoms and he’s the type of guy who 30

will call me a slut if I tell him. He’ll blame me for his wrongdoing and just keep going and going. He has a lot of anger issues and he could use this as blackmail. I’m scared. Her Ex Reacts Personally Letting a former sex partner know you may have exposed them to an STI – or that they may have exposed you to an STI – is the decent, responsible, courteous and kind thing to do. Not just for their health and safety, HERP, but for the health and safety of their future sex partners. But people who are unkind, scary and violent have no one but themselves to blame when a former sex partner/girlfriend/boyfriend/enbyfriend is too afraid for their own safety to make that disclosure. Provided your fears are legitimate, HERP, and you’re not inflating them to avoid an awkward or unpleasant conversation, you don’t owe your ex a call. I’m a bi guy, living alone. At the start of the year, this new guy moved into the house I live in and holy shit is he hot. I’ve had regular fantasies about him. And now with the quarantine, those fantasies have increased, along with the number of times I see him in a day. I’ve been feeling the urge to ask him if he’s interested in anything, but my friends have advised me to “not shit where I eat.” But due to the quarantine, the only other option I have is masturbating and that’s not doing the trick. Should I take the plunge and ask him? Household Entirely Lacks Pleasure Health authorities have advised us to shit where we eat for the time being. The New York City Health Department recommends masturbation, HELP, because you are and always have been your safest sex partner. But your next safest partner during this pandemic is someone with whom you live. That doesn’t mean everyone in your household is fair game, of course; some people are quarantining with their parents. But if there was ever a time when you could approach a non-related adult with whom you live to see if they might wanna fuck around, now’s the time. Apologize in advance for potentially making things awkward and invite him to say no. (“If you’re not interested, please say no and I promise not to bring it up again.”) But if the answer is yes, HELP, send video. I’m a gay bondage bottom. My boyfriend of four years is 100 percent vanilla and we solved the “problem” of my need to get tied up – and it’s a real need – by outsourcing it. (Can you tell we’re longtime readers and
listeners?) I was seeing two regular FWBs/ bondage buddies but that’s obviously on hold right now. (I’ve reached out to both my FWBs to let them know I’m thinking about them and that I care about them.) The issue is I still really need to get tied up and my boyfriend is willing, but he’s so bad at it. He’s hurt that I’d rather go without than let him put me in bondage that isn’t really bondage because I can easily get out. We used to fight because I wanted him to tie me up and he didn’t want to do it, and now we’re fighting because he wants to tie me up and I won’t let him do it. Any advice for a fan? This Isn’t Exactly Desirable If people can teach yoga, give concerts and conduct first dates via streaming services, then one of your bondage buddies can – if they’re into the idea – give your boyfriend a few bondage tutorials online. I’m glad to hear you already reached out to your bondage buddies, TIED, since now you’ll be asking them to do you and your boyfriend a favor. But I imagine it’s a favor they’ll enjoy doing. I’m a teenage girl with a female friend who keeps joking about having sex with me. We’re both into girls and sex, but while I find her really hot, she probably doesn’t feel the same about me. How can I tell if she’s joking about it because she finds the idea ridiculous or if she’s joking about it because she actually wants to? Getting Into Real Life The ability to ask someone a direct question – particularly someone you’re interested in romantically and/or sexually – is an important skill, GIRL, and getting some practice now, when stakes are relatively low, will benefit you all your life. So get your friend on the phone and ask her this: “Are you serious about wanting to have sex with me? It’s fine if you don’t want to, but I’m actually attracted to you. Please say no if the answer’s no.” If the answer is yes, you can make a date to get together once circumstances allow. But if the answer is no, GIRL, then you can get some practice making declarative statements: “I don’t want you to make those jokes anymore. They’re hurtful to me.” And if she continues to make jokes about having sex with you after you’ve made it clear she’s hurting your feelings, then she’s just being cruel and doesn’t deserve your time, attention or friendship.
