Gov. Ron DeSantis last week signed a bill overhauling Florida’s election laws, in one of the most contentious issues of the 2021 legislative session. DeSantis, who will be on the ballot in 2022 as he seeks a second term as governor, signed SB 90 on the Fox News show Fox & Friends — while barring all other news media — after an event with supporters in West Palm Beach. It remains to be seen whether the law will be implemented, but state taxpayers are certainly on the hook for a long court battle from the law’s many opponents. @Vienna Taylor That’s a little suspicious that Florida reporters were barred from attending. If you don’t have anything to hide, why not be transparent? @Cayla Parks When you know you can’t win by the rules, you invent your own. @Ant Iannucci Remember that voting is one of those “God given Constitutional rights” just like the 2nd Amendment. So just as much as Republicans in each state can chip away and add this restriction and that, so too can the 2nd Amendment be further restricted with lots of new rules and restrictions. Former DeSantis staffers form ‘support group’ to trade horror stories Turns out you don’t need a sex trafficking scandal to shed staffers. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis lost plenty of employees during his time in Congress by just being generally terrible to work under. According to a new report from Politico, former staffers from DeSantis’ congressional office have formed a support group in the years since, where they gather to trade “war stories.” The staffers told Politico that DeSantis was difficult to pin down, saying they had to lure the current governor into important meetings with promises of cupcakes or a birthday celebration. The picture staff painted elsewhere made it unlikely that any given employee would see a second office birthday party. “Loyalty and trust, that is not a currency he deals in,” an anonymous former employee said. “It’s him and [his wife] Casey [DeSantis]. But everyone else is like a disposable piece of garbage.” The data supports the idea that DeSantis created a volatile workplace. In three of his five years in Congress, DeSantis was in the 70th percentile for staff turnover. A mass exodus of staff during his first year as Florida governor left DeSantis defending his workplace to reporters. “We have great stability,” DeSantis said at the time. “We have some of the absolute strongest people working in the governor’s office. And it’s been very, very productive. ... You just want to have the best possible operations, but we’ve got some really, really good people.” DeSantis’ office responded to the Politico report with a five-page document of employee testimonials singing about how nice it is to work for DeSantis. To that we say, blink twice if he has a gun on you. — Alex Galbraith

Demings urges residents to wear their masks, no matter what DeSantis says Though an order from Gov. Ron DeSantis effectively stripped Orange County’s ability to enforce a mask mandate, Mayor Jerry Demings is urging residents to keep masking up. During a news conference about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic on May 6, Demings asked that locals continue to seek the COVID-19 vaccine and wear a mask in situations where they would be close to other people. “We have a responsibility to protect ourselves and protect others by following the CDC guidelines,” Demings said. “Again, I urge our residents and businesses to not give up on getting the vaccine nor give up on wearing facial coverings. If we give up now, the consequences may be catastrophic.” On May 5, the state of Florida had 4,504 newly reported cases and 71 reported deaths from COVID-19. In spite of this, DeSantis has been pushing hard to force Floridian cities and businesses to reopen, reinstating work search requirements on unemployment benefits while directly

attacking local government’s ability to make decisions in emergencies. Demings called DeSantis’ recent executive order superseding COVID-19 emergency orders throughout the state an attempt to “usurp the authority of Democrat-led urban counties and cities.” Demings has moved on the issue of masking and social distancing when he felt it was warranted. He rolled out a plan recently showing how the Orlando area would gradually open up as its vaccination rates rose. DeSantis’ order ripped that plan out at the root, but Demings is still pushing for residents to follow the county’s advice. “I have lived in this community my entire life and have been in public service for 40 of those years. My job and that of other health care experts is to give you the best advice possible and we will continue to do that. I know that by working together, we can make a difference and end this unprecedented health crisis,” Demings said. — AG

Downtown Orlando’s Independent Bar reverts to classic ‘Barbarella’ moniker “What’s in a name?” Readers [and writers, full disclosure] of a certain age will be pleasantly surprised by the announcement this week that downtown Orlando’s Independent Bar has changed its name back to its iconic Barbarella moniker. If they’re anything like us, the news will have them lost in a haze of old memories for at least an hour. A simple, yet splashy, Facebook post on May 4 revealed the name change and accompanying signage to a positive reaction. Beyond the signage, not much else physically about the club will change, and a scan of their events calendar doesn’t indicate any particular shift in musical direction as of this writing, though that’s understandable given that weekly club nights like Saturday Night New Wave and Mac & Cheese on Wednesdays are reliable floor-fillers. And yet, we’re betting the new/old name might draw some folks back in for a nostalgic drink or three, as they get lost in a reverie of a very different time in downtown Orlando’s life cycle. — Matthew Moyer

Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World ending temperature checks Local theme parks Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando both phased out temperature checks as part of their COVID-19 safety protocols last week. Universal Orlando acted first, ending temperature checks across the board on Thursday. Universal will also ease up on physical distancing requirements at the park, reducing the required distance between park-goers from six feet to three feet. This is in line with physical distancing guidelines in Orange County, which were changed by Mayor Jerry Demings from six to three feet at the end of April. Walt Disney World, on the other hand, ended mandatory temp

checks for employees on May 8, and plans to do the same for park visitors on May 16. Temperature checks for park employees and visitors had been mandatory for entrance since both theme parks reopened last summer. Face masks are still required at both parks. — MM

Altamonte Springs cancels ‘Red Hot & Boom’ fireworks for second year Altamonte Springs’ annual July 4 shindig Red Hot & Boom has been canceled by organizers for a second year. An update posted to an official Altamonte Springs Facebook account broke the bad but understandable news about the decision to postpone this year’s freedom blowout: “This event typically brings as many as a quarter of a million people to the area around Uptown Altamonte and inside Cranes Roost Park. … The City understands how important this event is to the many families and individuals who have frequented Red Hot & Boom through the years.” A quarter of a million people does seem like a tall order right about now. Reactions to the Facebook post ranged from “Thank you for the safety of our city!” to “I guess Altamonte doesn’t respect Gov DeSantis’ ban on local restrictions.” (Guess not!) As for the equally well-attended July 4 fireworks celebration at Lake Eola Park, WKMG-TV News reports that city leaders are still in “internal discussions” over whether to move forward with it this year. — MM

The number of tourists visiting Orlando fell by more than half in 2020 Tourism is the lifeblood of Orlando. Walt Disney’s decision to build a castle in a swamp morphed Orlando from a military town of 50,000 to the car-choked mess it is today. Even if they’re clogging our arteries, a situation where they’re completely gone would be disastrous. We came as close as possible to finding out what a tourist-free Orlando might be like in 2020. According to a new report from Visit Orlando, the city’s tourist count fell to 35.3 million visitors. That’s a 53 percent drop off from 2019, and the lowest total in over 20 years. “These numbers represent a devastating impact to our local economy, local businesses, to our friends, to our neighbors and colleagues,” Visit Orlando CEO Cassandra Matej said during a presentation of the findings. “That is why the main focus for Visit Orlando is all about recovery, recovery, recovery.” 2019 was a record year for tourism in the state of Florida: More than 133.7 million people came to the state for vacation in the last full year before the coronavirus pandemic. The state’s tourism arm is slowly, steadily attempting to lure those visitors back as parks and attractions roll back restrictions. — AG

ACLU sues immediately as DeSantis signs into law a measure to restrict citizens’ ballot initiatives BY JIM SAUN DERS, N SF

ust a day after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the bill, the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida filed a constitutional challenge last Saturday to a measure that would limit contributions to political committees backing ballot initiatives. The ACLU argued in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Tallahassee that the bill, SB 1890, “burdens and chills” free speech and association protected under the First Amendment. The bill, which is part of years of efforts by lawmakers to clamp down on ballot initiatives, would place a $3,000 cap on contributions to political committees trying to put proposed constitutional amendments on the ballot. It was among 15 bills that DeSantis signed last Friday and is scheduled to take effect July 1. The ACLU was heavily involved in passing a 2018 ballot initiative aimed at restoring the voting rights of felons who have fulfilled their sentences. It said in the lawsuit that it has developed other plans for initiatives to “expand voter participation in Florida.” The limit on contributions to political committees would make it difficult — or, critics contend, impossible — to collect the 891,589 petition signatures needed to put proposed constitutional amendments on the 2022 ballot because signatures are partially collected by paid employees, who go door-to-door or stand on busy streets with clipboards. Political committees in the past often have spent millions of dollars to gather petition signatures and get required Florida Supreme Court approval of the wording of ballot proposals. “Because of the immense expense of collecting over

800,000 signatures and defending an initiative at the Florida Supreme Court, SB 1890’s contribution limit has chilled the ACLU of Florida’s efforts to develop initiatives for the future,” the lawsuit said. “If SB 1890 stands, the ACLU of Florida will not be able to propose and support future initiatives, because such initiatives will not be viable under SB 1890’s contribution limit.” The Republican-controlled Legislature gave final approval to the bill on April 26. Supporters argued that the contribution limits are needed to stop deep-pocketed donors from financing ballot initiatives on policy issues that should not be in the state Constitution. They said such issues should be decided by the Legislature, not through constitutional amendments. “This is not a direct democracy,” Senate Ethics and Elections Chairman Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, said during a March committee meeting. “This government that we have is a democratic republic. The Constitution is the founding document to define the role of the relationship between a government and their people.” But Democrats contend groups have turned to the ballot-initiative process because the Legislature has not responded to the majority wishes expressed by the public. Among examples, they point to a 2016 constitutional amendment that broadly legalized medical marijuana and a 2020 constitutional amendment that will raise the state’s minimum wage. Both of those drives were primarily funded by Orlando attorney John Morgan. “The citizens’ initiative process is a last resort for the people to demand a change in course when the government fails to listen — yet it has been under attack by

tone-deaf Republican lawmakers for years in their quest for omnipotence,” the Senate Democratic caucus said in a statement last Friday night after DeSantis signed the bill. Under the bill, contributions to political committees backing initiatives would be limited to $3,000 until the point when initiatives have met requirements to get on the ballot. After that point — when backers have submitted enough petition signatures and received Supreme Court approval — contributions would not face a cap. The effect would be that contributions would not be capped during the final months of campaigns about ballot initiatives. Senate sponsor Ray Rodrigues, R-Estero, said during a March committee meeting that allowing unlimited contributions after the point when initiatives are approved for the ballot is designed to address concerns about a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision known as Citizens United. That 2010 decision allowed corporations and outside groups to spend unlimited amounts on elections. “Under the Citizens United decision, I and others believed that if we were to attempt to continue that [$3,000 limit] past the point where it’s [an] initiative and to the point where it’s an actual referendum, we would be in violation of that Supreme Court decision,” Rodrigues said. “On the initiative process, we think that’s more easily defended.” But the 18-page ACLU lawsuit said the contribution cap would violate the First Amendment. “By limiting plaintiff’s [the ACLU’s] ability to pool resources and band together with others to advance citizen initiatives, SB 1890 unduly burdens plaintiff’s First Amendment right to associate with others,” the lawsuit said. “By limiting plaintiff’s ability to give monetary and in-kind contributions to advance issues and circulate ideas relating to statewide ballot initiatives, SB 1890 unduly burdens plaintiff’s First Amendment right to free speech.” The ACLU lawsuit came two days after groups filed two lawsuits challenging another measure — SB 90 — that would overhaul Florida elections laws, including putting new restrictions on mail-in ballots. Mr . Eddy’s Gainesville visionary artist Mr. Eddy Mumma gets a long-awaited solo exhibition at the Mennello Museum BY M AT T HEW M OY ER

hen Gainesville artist Mr. Eddy Mumma arose every morning, he was greeted by a crowd of eager faces, beaming at him from the hundreds of canvases that covered every inch of wall space in his small home. These were his paintings. These were his friends. The vibrant friendly-throng effect is reproduced in miniature as part of the Mennello Museum’s new exhibit, The Grand Portraits of Mr. Eddy Mumma, on display until Aug. 1.

Eddy Mumma was a self-taught artist who did not start painting until he was 60, newly relocated to Gainesville, diabetic and homebound. Despite his health challenges, Mumma threw himself into his art fully, and by the end of his life, he had produced nearly a thousand paintings, many on both sides of a particular canvas or indeed doors, sheets of plywood or even glass. (A few of these double-sided canvases are on display, evidence of a compulsive work rate — upon completing one painting, Mumma would simply flip the surface and start all over again.) Seeing this massed array of Mumma’s paintings gives the viewer a sense of the joyous rush of creation, the head rush of expression that filled Mumma’s days, giving him a (no doubt welcome) reprieve from a quiet life beset by health problems.

Neighborhood “I imagine it was cathartic, like it was a necessity for him, and that’s a common thread among many folk artists or artists really operating outside the art world,” says Shannon Fitzgerald, Mennello’s executive director, in an interview with Orlando Weekly. “It was a necessity; he had to be creating.” Mumma came to Florida to live near his daughter, Carroll Gunsaulies, in 1968. He began painting in 1969 at the urging of Gunsaulies, who suggested innocently that he take a painting class. Mumma only took one lesson — he didn’t go back after the instructor insulted him. But that didn’t deter him from painting at a beyond prolific rate. His schooling would come from endless hours spent poring over National Geographic magazines and art books featuring work by the likes of Vincent Van Gogh and Hans Holbein. You can see in many of Mumma’s paintings direct nods to Vermeer’s “Girl With a Red Hat,” Millet’s “Gleaners,” or Steve McCurry’s iconic, haunting portrait of Sharbat Gula (a photo unofficially dubbed “Afghan Girl”) from the June 1985 cover of National Geographic. But as Mumma continued to paint ferociously, his style became more self-assured, less homage, and his half-length portraits were executed in a style very much his own. Mumma’s portrait work is kinetic and deceptively simplistic, favoring rounded faces, wide-open eyes and simple lines that convey deeply evocative expressions and emotions. Mumma painted with acrylics and developed his own sense of color, inverting traditional “cool” and “warm” palettes to further define his personal aesthetic. “There is a deeper sense of color theory,” says Fitzgerald. “As he made more work, there’s more confidence, and that’s where we see the bold color juxtapositions — and they vibrate, because he knew which colors together would do that.” The way Mumma signed his works became something of an art form in itself. He playfully incorporates his signature into the work so prominently that it is sometimes a central compositional element, both unconsciously echoing Warhol and predicting a now-ubiquitous age of celebrity artist branding. “His signature is very important. It demonstrates a level of confidence, and the scale where he’s like, ‘My name is important … that’s my brand, I’m leaving this!’” says Fitzgerald. Mumma found a kindred spirit in Santa Fe College professor Lennie Kesl, who befriended Mumma and provided him with materials and tools and books. In return Mumma would, amazingly, allow Kesl to trade for or buy a painting every now and then, dirt cheap. “[Kesl] was really the only person that had access to what [Mumma] was thinking, access to his house, to his works,” explains Fitzgerald. Collectors came knocking on Mumma’s door, hoping to own one of these unique works, per-

haps sensing that Mumma could be North Central Florida’s answer to a Rev. Howard Finster or a Daniel Johnston, but Mumma would almost invariably turn them down. “His story is really interesting because it’s very similar to our permanent collection artist, Earl Cunningham. He was a self-taught folk artist in St. Augustine, and he wouldn’t sell his work either. … Eddy Mumma is slightly more mysterious. I understand he was sometimes cranky and didn’t want people on his property; he was very protective of his artwork and what he did,” says Fitzgerald. “And that is a common thread by some of these artists making work, not for the market, but for themselves.” When Mumma passed away in 1986, it would be a collector, ironically, who would save his works. Josh Feldstein, who had already been inducted into the private world of Mumma-mania when Kesl shared some of Mumma’s paintings with him, happened to be driving by Mumma’s Gainesville home right after his death and saw family members clearing out Mumma’s home, all but leaving his vast archive of paintings on the side of the road. Feldstein sprung into action, offering to buy the majority of it on the spot. Then he started working with Gunsaulies to both preserve the legacy of and get the word out on her father’s art. The Mennello has 25 of Mumma’s works in their permanent collection, and now are giving these “friends of Mr. Eddy” the spotlight they deserve. (Mumma’s work is also held in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Kohler Foundation and Baltimore’s American Visionary Art Museum, among other prestigious institutions.) This is only the third solo exhibition of Mumma’s work in the country to date, and it’s a strange and beautiful thing to see so many of his paintings in one place. “Eddy Mumma, in his own small or big way, was sharing that he mattered and he existed, and his humanity was also often very painful — it hurts to be in the world,” concludes Fitzgerald. “And yet our art persists, even in difficult times.” mmoyer@orlandoweekly.com

[ arts + culture ] Are you surprised by the enthusiasm for the zine, both on the contributors’ and readers’ sides? DH: Honestly, no, just because I feel like we have a bunch of friends that make a bunch of art and never get around to showing it to people. And a lot of times what people need is just someone to be like, “Your art is good, let me show it to some people!!” And then they’ll be like, “OK.” And then as soon as people started seeing what kind of stuff was in the zine, it was just a matter of time till we got rid of all of them. I like the regularity of it coming out every month. It’s like having a subscription to a magazine. CZ: The consistency is helpful. Both for the contributors and for us to get it done. DH: And I think for me, trying to make sure I’m consistently doing things and not just wasting my time, it encourages me to have at least one new piece per month to put it in the zine.

Seminal Orlando zine ‘Is It Over Yet?’ returns for a year’s worth of connection through creativity BY MATTHEW MOY ER

ne of the more welcome moments of the year to date has been the return of longtime Orlando arts zine, Is It Over Yet? The phrase “labor of love” has long been relegated to the realm of cliché, but IIOY? breathes vibrant meaning into the old saw — just as they do the print medium. The core duo of Cody Zeigler and Daniel Harris have resurrected their collaborative visual arts zine for one (last?) yearlong blaze of glory, helping get the word out and eyeballs on new artists in the Orlando area and beyond, creating connections and audience during a time where we’re all still somewhat isolated. COVID-era boredom and Zeigler’s return to Orlando were the impetus for the renaissance, and Zeigler and Harris raised the stakes this time around, too, making the zine a regular monthly endeavor. Is It Over Yet? is now released on the 15th of each month through the end of December and that clockwork nature only raises anticipation somehow. This is a different IIOY? than the one that started back in 2013, a concern that eventually expanded out to the DIY gallery A Space and a host of shows, both of the music and art

varieties. Gratifyingly, the core mission remains the same: to create a visual artifact of local creativity and community and get it into people’s hands. Equally gratifying is the friendship at the heart of this enterprise — Zeigler and Harris are still enthusiastic collaborators in hunting out new aesthetics and artists after nearly a decade. Everything else, as they say, is just noise. Each issue of IIOY? is an amazing transaction of trust. Artists entrust Harris and Zeigler with their art, and the duo entrust it to the greater Orlando community in the form of a one-off booklet. The April issue featured 12 artists working in photography, collage, painting, digital art and illustration, all presented in a full-color zine with a transparent plastic outer cover. It’s stunning. The next issue of IIOY? comes out on Saturday, May 15. If you want a copy or want to contribute to future issues, contact isitoveryetglobal@gmail.com. The truly enterprising might be able to grab a copy at Stardust Video & Coffee within the first couple days of release. But be warned: Print runs go fast.

While people are still somewhat isolated, the zine fosters connection through sharing art. You can see what someone’s been up to creatively, which is a great check-in. DH: I think that like that month-to-month aspect, especially seeing the same contributors every few weeks, helps you feel like you are going on a journey with them. And once you see them improve, you’re personally invested in them. CZ: (Illustrator) Brandon Geurts made us start printing the zine in color. He was sending us black-and-white art for a while. And when we were like six issues deep, he sent us a color piece. And we both thought, “Yeah, we can’t make that black-and-white.” DH: I remember I always used to get on Brandon and be like, “You could do such crazy stuff with color!” Then he finally did, and now he’s one of the most colorful painters that I know. And it does make me really excited. Do you have anything special planned for any future issues? DH: We have a cover idea that we want to do … CZ: Where we put a bunch of stuff and let people make their own cover. DH: Yeah, we’d enclose little glue sticks and scissors with each copy and have people send us photos of the covers that they made. And then maybe do a cover compilation of other people’s covers. We have all these crazy ideas for formatting and content, but the monthly deadline is part of what keeps us reneging on all our grandiose ideas in order to accomplish the primary goal, which is to ensure that there’s one out every single month. CZ: I also really don’t mind just putting them out. DH: It’s funny, I haven’t gotten to see a lot of my friends in a really long time, and just getting to email back and forth with them and look at their art for hours while laying it out has kind of made me feel a little less lonely. Just being able to tell them, “Oh I really love this piece, let me put it in the zine!” or “What do you think about this, how does this layout look?” and even stuff like getting contributors’ mailing addresses and going to mail those out … I feel like I’m doing something meaningful with another person, even though they’re not there.

Universal’s new Jurassic World: VelociCoaster is a terrifying run with the raptors

The pandemic put most major

projects in the theme park industry on pause, and prompted some resorts to let nearly completed attractions remain unopened while waiting for the economy to recover. But while Disney waits until October to debut Epcot’s Ratatouille ride, Universal Orlando is again breaking from the pack and unleashing another marquee attraction. Less than a year after premiering the powerhouse Bourne Stuntacular show at Universal Studios Florida, Universal has begun “technical rehearsal” previews for the Jurassic World: VelociCoaster, building anticipation for the ride’s June 10 grand opening. I was recently among the lucky guests allowed to serve as test dummies for this saurian scream machine and got to discover for myself if coaster manufacturer Intamin’s intimidating pretzel of twisted track truly delivers the world-beating G-forces that thrill junkies have been dreaming about. Spoiler alert: to quote myself cresting the signature 155-foot-tall top hat hill, “HOLY CRAP, YES!” A few years back, the Jurassic World– inspired Raptor Encounter puppet photo op wedged a razor-sharp talon into the door of Jurassic Park’s “Isla Aventura” backstory, which the VelociCoaster has now kicked wide open by weaving that franchise’s modern blue aesthetic around the vintage Discovery Center. The two brands blend surprisingly well aesthetically, although there’s no apparent explanation of the overlapping timelines for nitpickers; they even managed to preserve and relocate the giant ficus tree that once was a fixture of the land’s skyline. In the rarely occupied rest area where that tree once stood, you’ll now find the industrial entrance of Jurassic World, with trains barreling along the adjacent shoreline at 70 miles per hour making it crystal clear exactly what kind of adventure is in store.

As with every major modern attraction, VelociCoaster’s story starts in the queue, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a more entertaining one anywhere — except, of course, in the Wizarding World next door. Stops along your walking tour of the raptor-training facilities include an observation window where digital dinosaurs can be seen chasing the actual coaster cars, and a grooming stable with animatronic raptors that blink, breathe and even smell exactly like I’d imagine real ones would. Film stars Chris Pratt (Owen Grady), Bryce Dallas Howard (Claire Dearing) and BD Wong (Dr. Henry Wu) reprise their roles on video screens, and fans of Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum should keep their eyes peeled for Easter eggs referencing their characters. A roller coaster this fast doesn’t really need an in-depth narrative, but VelociCoaster’s story cleverly inverts that overused theme park trope, “you’re on a pleasant tour when something goes horribly wrong,” which visitors may recognize from Jurassic Park River Adventure, Reign of Kong, Star Tours, Expedition Everest and countless others. Instead, here the guests are explicitly warned by Grady that they’ll probably get eaten alive during their absurdly dangerous visit inside the raptor paddock, when in fact Blue and her buddies really just want friends to play with. Those raptors are only seen during the ride itself as static statues and projection screens (nobody needs another “Disco Yeti”), and although I’m slightly disappointed that early rumors of a final physical effect didn’t come to fruition, there is an audio clip before unloading that really ties the land together. VelociCoaster’s environment is interesting enough for coaster-phobics to traverse, and there’s a family room screening Netflix’s Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous cartoon where they can wait while their braver companions are riding. But if you are willing to strap in, you’ll find your feet dangling slightly above the

floors of the claw-scarred trains, which carry 24 passengers in 12 two-seat rows, with only hip-to-thigh restraints securely pinning you in your seat. Since there are no over-the-shoulder restraints to bang your ears on, your upper body is free to flail about like a Barbie doll in the hands of an angry toddler. Universal claims the VelociCoaster delivers 12 total seconds of weightlessness, but this isn’t gentle “floater airtime”; we’re talking full-throttle negative G-forces that will happily eject anything on your face or head into the murky lagoon. Consider leaving expensive jewelry at home. (Luckily for my cellphone, there are free lockers just before the boarding station, an innovation that should be mandatory on all future thrill rides.) Other roller coasters across Central Florida — or indeed around the world — may be taller, faster or longer than VelociCoaster, but I can’t think of another ride I’ve experienced that packed in so many exhilarating elements back-to-backto-back. Unlike the Incredible Hulk, which now relinquishes its crown as Universal’s most intense coaster, VelociCoaster starts strong and then builds, delivering increasing intensity for the first linear induction launch right through the barrel roll over water that serves as a heart-stopping finale. The first half of the ride is full of surprising turns and head-chopping rockwork; the second half will peel your face off while making you forget which way is up, and — if you’re anything like me — every second will have you scream-laughing through tears. If you want to run with the raptor pack, watch for soft opening opportunities during the coming weeks. And brace yourself for massive crowds on opening day. I only hope Universal has learned its lessons from the technically troublesome debut of Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and manages to work out any amber-encrusted bugs before fans bang down the gates. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

’ll admit, I had fantasies of inviting James Cuomo — the cantankerous Facebook “Hamptons Douche Spotter” — to dine with me at the Hampton Social, a restaurant playing into the vibe of the affluent seaside destination on Long Island. I mean, the man has documented countless incidents of summertime asshattery committed by entitled twats in every neighborhood from Southampton to Montauk, and he’s been doing it since 2013: fat guys wearing tiny Speedos and fur coats inside restaurants, running up huge tabs and leaving zero tip; oblivious women seating their tiny dogs in highchairs; boneheaded drivers doubleparked, sometimes perpendicularly. I had hopes but, sadly, no such contemptible behavior was observed at this whitewashed hotspot that took over the old Tommy Bahama space at Pointe Orlando. What a letdown. Oh sure, the place looks like the setting of a J. Crew catalog photoshoot, and wannabes get a kick posing

in front of the Instagram wall, but there’s not much else to sneer at. Well, with the possible exception of our server, who felt it appropriate to keep her mask dangling beneath her lower lip the whole time. So, we sipped not-so-potent $13 cocktails while taking in the not-so-ocean-breezy digs. Design-wise, Hampton Social does a nice job of bringing the outside in. The place screams BRUNCH, which is served on weekends from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Yet, despite the name, the Hampton Social isn’t as superficial as it sounds. Someone in the kitchen clearly takes great pride in the food coming out — a conclusion we came to after digging into a plate of beautifully charred grilled octopus ($18.50). It’s a head-nodder of a dish, marinated in citrus, dressed with fennel, and served alongside roasted vegetables, beets, green lentils and orange supremes halved for bite-sized ease. Then came the chicken lollipops ($15), their dark hue the result of a curry-soy

The new store is located at 500 Savage Court and is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

marinade that lent these gams deep flavor. Nothing mind-blowing, but this is finger food the way finger food should be done. Even the smoked eggplant ($14), with a vibrant medley of veg and grains (cauliflower, lentils, onions, greens sprouts and more) took some thought and conscientious effort to construct. It came served on crispy shells of watermelon radish, garnished with feta. Certainly not the level of attention we expected. A pleasant surprise? I’d say so. Even the self-proclaimed pizza snob in the group couldn’t help but heap praise on the avocado corn pizza ($15), a cheesy, rustic pie topped with roasted tomatoes, garlic butter, basil and lemon zest. There’s corn in the plate of braised short ribs ($28) as well — charred niblets floating atop a corn mousse — that upstaged the less-than-forktender slab of citrus-braised meat, the lone gaffe of the night. Of course, it wouldn’t be a meal in the Hamptons without a lobster roll (market price) and, I have to say, the meaty number served here truly wowed. You can choose “Manhattan style” (served warm with butter) or “Maine style” (cold with creamy mayo). In steamy Florida, the latter is the way to go. It’s served with house-made chips, but do yourself a favor and upgrade to the mac and cheese (made with orecchiette) for $2 more, or enjoy it with a side of hearty New England clam chowder ($9). Just as impressive were double-wrapped shrimp tacos that didn’t shy away from the heat, packed with jalapeños, fresnos, a spicy aioli and citrus slaw. We couldn’t find fault in tart Key lime pie ($9) served with strawberry gelato and mint-flecked whipped cream, or airy beignet-like doughnuts ($13). We quite enjoyed the latter with vanilla bean ice cream, hot honey and chocolate sauce. Indeed, the Hampton Social wholly shattered my snarky notions about the place. This was no corporate-backed bastion of boors clad in Brooks Brothers, as I had initially assumed. Nor was it a place I’d take delight in mocking or ripping on. Frankly, I’m happy I didn’t ask Mr. Cuomo to join me for dinner. Had he done so, the only douche spotted likely would’ve been me.

(Netflix) High School Musical: The Series — I know Disney is all about crosspromotion, but is it really necessary that the show the kids are putting on in Season 2 just happens to be Beauty and the Beast? It’s like finding out the Winter Soldier is Grogu’s guidance counselor or something. (Disney+) Love, Death + Robots — The second season of the animated sci-fi anthology offers further adult scenarios starring mechanical devices. And after a year of COVID-19, hats off to you if you remember any adult scenarios that don’t involve mechanical devices. (Netflix) Those Who Wish Me Dead — Yes, the title could describe 40 percent of your Facebook friends list. But Warner Brothers’ latest simultaneous theatrical/streaming release is actually an outdoorsy thriller that finds a wildlands firefighter (Angelina Jolie) protecting a young man from hired killers. So yeah, more like Reddit. (HBO Max) The Underground Railroad — OK, hear me out here: What if the Underground Railroad had been an actual railroad? With train cars and conductors and everything? That would be worth 10 episodes of an alternate-history series, right? Sure! The same way I would have watched The Man in the High Castle if Nazis weren’t really in control of America. (Amazon Prime) The Woman in the Window — Among his many documented dishonesties, novelist Daniel Mallory was accused of ripping off the Sigourney Weaver movie Copycat for his 2018 novel, The Woman in the Window. But that hasn’t stopped 20th Century Studios and Fox 2000 Pictures from turning the book into a major film event, with a high-profile cast that includes Gary Oldman, Julianne Moore and Amy Adams. So whaddaya say we all just put that plagiarism stuff behind us, let bygones be bygones, and enjoy Adams’ gripping performance as … checks notes …. “Ellen Ripley.” (Netflix) orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES

In April, Orlando indie-folk act Someday River dropped a couple of strong singles to tease their upcoming new album. On Friday, May 14, that record, On Dreaming, will finally be unveiled in its entirety. Someday River have been on a drip of singles for quite a while now, but this is their first collection in five years and their most expansive one yet. Bandleader Greyson Paul Charnock serves up a strong batch of songs stroked with craft by a lineup that boasts players from excellent O-grown bands that understand big atmosphere, like Roadkill Ghost Choir, Day Joy and A.T.T.I.C. Even though the album was recorded in a home studio (Charnock’s own, named Old Familiar Sound), Someday River paint with a palette and canvas of wide expanse, adorned with added flourishes of synth, piano and horns. The result is a spacious, stately and dreamy seven-song suite of lush, psych-kissed folk rock. On Dreaming will stream on major platforms and be available for purchase on Bandcamp. I do gay porn for a living. How do people who do porn meet someone who doesn’t just sexualize or fetishize them? I can’t eat, sleep and breathe my work constantly, but the guys I meet want me to live out the “porn persona” version of myself all the time. How does someone who does porn know who you can be yourself with? Aiden Ward

“Living with two identities is definitely a balancing act,” says Devin Franco, an awardwinning gay porn performer. “Being in porn means juggling the ‘real world’ person I actually am — a person who has to navigate rent, healthcare, bills and a social life — and a porn star alter ego. And these days our porn alter egos don’t just have to perform. We also have to do a lot of our own shooting and our own PR while maintaining our images. It’s a lot. And reality always comes knocking no matter how much fun you’re having. The bills always come due.” Franco’s first bit of advice is to remember that you are not your alter ego. “It’s a beautiful and sexy part of you that you have the opportunity to show to the world,” says Franco. “But it’s not all of you. That will help you stay grounded.” It also helps to remember that being “porn famous” doesn’t mean everyone knows who you are. “A lot of people you meet will have no idea who you are,” Franco says, “which means a lot of the time you’ll get to choose when you want to introduce yourself as your porn alter ego or when you want to just be yourself. This makes it easier to create boundaries between your real life and your porn life. Knowing you get to decide when or even if you want to introduce yourself as your actual self or as that fantasy version of yourself — your alter ego — means you can control how a lot of people perceive you.” So even if you get as porn famous as Franco is, Aiden, you’ll still have lots of opportunities for people to get to know the real you before you tell them what you do for a living. As with so many things (being HIV+, being trans, being kinky, being polyam, etc.), when you tell a guy you do porn, you’re telling him one thing he needs to know about you — but his reaction will tell you everything you need to know about him. If he starts shaming you about what you do — or if he goes from seeing you as a person to seeing you as an object — that’s really all you need to know: Don’t see him,

unfollow him, block him. “Now lots of the people who fetishize and sexualize you are your fans — they’re your audience, they’re the ones who pay your bills and you have to recognize that and you do have to keep them interested,” Franco says, “but you don’t have to give them all of your time and attention. Because at the end of the day, it’s your work and you’ve got other shit to do. … And you’ll sometimes find that some of the people who fetishized you at first don’t anymore once they get to know the real you.” Franco shared your question with CagedJock, another high-profile porn star that Franco works with regularly, and CagedJock shared his strategy for finding guys he can be himself around: “I like to hang out with people who work in the same industry,” CagedJock said, “because they don’t sexualize me. Devin and I have been friends since 2019. He’s super sexy and I adore him. While other guys might only see him only as fantasy figure, I don’t. Because I know our work doesn’t define us 24/7. We’re friends.” I’m a gay man in my 30s and during the pandemic I stayed with a straight male friend and his girlfriend. He’d periodically been flirty with me over the years — sending me nude photos and drunkenly telling me that he loved me. When his girlfriend was away visiting family we got drunk together. He bought all the alcohol, he mixed it and he served it. During this time we had a series of drunken encounters. The first time he took out his cock and asked me if I wanted to play with it. There was some brief licking and he grabbed my hair and finished on my face. He hugged me and rubbed my back after. The next two times were less serious, but he took off his shirt and pants. On one of those occasions his girlfriend called and he put his clothes back on, took the call, then came back and took his clothes off again. Because if anyone was taking advantage here, it was him. You could send those screengrabs, but you shouldn’t — as wrong as it was of him to weaponize anti-gay stereotype against you, BLAH, using his dick pics against him would also be wrong (and probably a crime under revenge porn statutes). You have every right to push back against the accusation that you forced yourself on your former friend — but while you have the receipts and he knows it, BLAH, you shouldn’t produce them. Maybe just knowing you have them will make you feel better.
