State health officials are asking an administrative law judge to permanently ban a Tallahassee physician from ordering medical marijuana for patients, suspend his medical license for five years and impose a $10,000 fine, after an investigation that included undercover agents posing as patients. The Department of Health’s proposed penalties against physician Joseph Dorn — who has practiced in Florida for more than three decades — date back to a 2019 complaint alleging that the physician violated state law by failing to conduct physical examinations of “Patient O.G.” and “Patient B.D.” The complaint also accused Dorn of employing a “trick or scheme” in the practice of medicine. Dorn’s lawyer, Ryan Andrews, maintains that the doctor didn’t do anything wrong. “Ironically, the only trick or scheme employed in this case was that of petitioner (the agency), by intentionally sending B.D. and O.G. to Dr. Dorn to trick him into ordering medical marijuana for B.D. and O.G. based on their presentation of unlawful falsehoods concerning their qualifying conditions (i.e., PTSD and anxiety),” Andrews wrote. @Andrea Smith Man, it’s almost like there is a whole bunch more pressing crime we could be investigating but instead we put two undercovers on medical marijuana.

‘YOU’LL BE MET WITH FLAMING ARROWS’ DeSantis cheered by Orlando CPAC crowd as potential presidential campaign looms BY JIM TURNER, NSF

ov. Ron DeSantis drew rock-star cheers Thursday as he declared Florida “the citadel of freedom” and played up his conservative credentials while opening the four-day Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando. DeSantis tossed hats to the crowd at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel before diving into a speech heavy on opposition to the federal government and calling for conservatives to “make 2022 the year that America fought back” against “leftist” and “woke” policies of the Biden Administration backed by media and big tech companies. “We’re going to lead the charge here in Florida, but we need people all over the country to be willing to put on that full armor of God, to stand firm against the left schemes,” DeSantis said. “You’ll be met with flaming arrows, but the shield of faith will stop them,” he continued. “You will emerge victorious. And so, I can tell you this in Florida, we will be standing our ground, and will be holding that line. We are not going to back down. We’ve accomplished more in this state than anyone

thought possible. But I can tell you this, we have only begun to fight.” The appearance at CPAC came as DeSantis runs for re-election in November and as speculation builds about a possible bid for president in 2024. A straw poll held at CPAC showed 59 percent of the 2,500 attendees polled would vote for Trump for president in 2024, while 28 percent back DeSantis. But a University of North Florida poll released last week indicated DeSantis holds a narrow lead on former President Donald Trump among Florida Republicans. Trump, who has wielded a vise-like grip on the party and who addressed the CPAC crowds on Saturday, also is widely considered a potential 2024 candidate. The poll by the university’s Public Opinion Research Lab had DeSantis at 44 percent and Trump at 41 percent, with other voters backing someone else or refusing to respond. “With both of them calling Florida home, this is a pivotal state and an outlier compared to national polling on this race,” said

Michael Binder, the lab’s faculty director and a professor of political science. The poll of 685 registered voters, conducted by phone between Feb. 7 and Feb. 20, has a 3.74 percentage-point margin of error. DeSantis, who did not mention the former president in his 20-minute address Thursday night, has reportedly drawn some ire from Trump for not publicly pledging to step aside in 2024 if Trump decides to run. In January, Trump took what many saw as a thinly veiled shot at DeSantis in criticizing “gutless” politicians who refuse to publicly disclose whether they received COVID-19 booster shots. DeSantis has repeatedly declined to reveal his booster status. Before DeSantis’ appearance Thursday, the Democratic National Committee posted a video highlighting Trump’s “gutless” quip and issued an accompanying statement that said DeSantis’ approach to the pandemic “could prolong the pandemic, irresponsibly undermined vaccines and elevated anti-vaxxers, all just to score political points.” DeSantis used his address to tout Florida as the “freest” state, with heavy tourism and open businesses and schools. He criticized Democratic President Joe Biden and federal infectious-disease expert Anthony Fauci, along with media organizations, tech companies and other major institutions that he said “have become infected with this woke virus.” DeSantis said, “Florida has defeated Faucism,” and “Freedom has prevailed in the Sunshine State,” pointing to issues such as his push to return students to schools while other states were holding classes online during the COVID-19 pandemic. “When I got elected governor in 2018, there were almost 300,000 more registered Democrats in the state of Florida than Republicans. And Florida has never had more registered Republicans and Democrats in our history,” DeSantis said. “Today, standing here in February of 2022, there are 82,000 more Republicans registered in the state of Florida than Democrats. And it’s not just people coming from blue states. There are people that look to Florida as the citadel of freedom, who are chafing under authoritarian rule all across the world.” DeSantis drew cheers for 2021 Florida laws that enhance riot-related penalties, put new restrictions on voting by mail and ban transgender female athletes from participating on girls’ and women’s sports teams. He also received cheers when he pointed to efforts to prohibit the teaching of “critical race theory” and his $8 million budget request to reroute illegal immigrants “to Delaware,” Biden’s home state. ith the end of the annual 60-day legislative session around the corner, tensions ran high again this week during lengthy floor debates as the House considered two of this year’s most controversial education measures. Last Thursday, the House passed a bill (HB 1557) that would prohibit instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades, with Republicans disputing a “don’t say gay” moniker critics gave the proposal. The bill would mandate that instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity “may not occur” in kindergarten through third grade. “It sends a terrible message to our youth that there is something so wrong, so inappropriate, so dangerous about this topic that we have to censor it from classroom instruction,” Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, an Orlando Democrat who is gay, told House members. But several Republicans argued that opponents have mischaracterized the measure. “The bill, plain as day, states that we cannot have instruction … meaning curriculum led by teachers, teaching children ages 5 through 9, about sexual orientation and gender identity. Think about that. Children that are learning how to color inside the lines, that are learning sight words,” Rep. Kaylee Tuck, R-Lake Placid, said. Six Republicans, however, voted with Democrats against the bill. Other parts of the measure are geared toward preventing school districts from withholding from parents information related to students’ health. The House also on Thursday voted along straight party lines to approve a bill (HB 7) that would limit how race-related concepts are taught in schools and in workplace training sessions. Under the measure, school instruction or workplace training would constitute discrimination if it “compels” people to believe certain concepts. The measure targets training sessions, for example, that would lead people to believe that they bear “responsibility for” actions committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex. Similarly, the bill would label school instruction discriminatory if it would lead students to “feel guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress” because of actions committed by other people of the same race or sex. “This bill makes it clear that in Florida, people will be judged as individuals by their words, by their character, and by their actions — not by their race, by their sex or by their national origin,” said bill sponsor Bryan Avila, a Miami Springs Republican. Debate about the bill, which was given the title “Individual Freedom,” centered in part on whether the measure could have a chilling effect on educators and employers’ ability to discuss real-world issues related to race. Rep. Kelly Skidmore, D-Boca Raton, criticized the proposal as seeking to “silence” teachers. “Anyone can read a history book, learning the facts. But the utility of teachers, professors, presenters, scholars, is to help facilitate the conversation, the analysis, of what we are doing. Silencing people is never right. And what you’re doing with this bill is silencing people’s ability to talk about deep and meaningful issues,” Skidmore said.

The bill doesn’t specifically mention critical race theory. But the measure came after Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a legislative proposal dubbed the “Stop Wrongs against Our Kids and Employees Act,” or Stop WOKE Act.

MAP QUEST

The gov’s winning week continued with the Legislature signaling he could get his wish to revamp a North Florida district held by a Black Democrat. A state House panel moved forward last Friday with a plan that could increase Republican seats in Congress. The House Redistricting Committee voted 15-9 to advance to the full House a pair of revised congressional maps that Democrats and other critics said fall short of requirements under a 2010 “Fair Districts” constitutional amendment. With two weeks left in the 60-day legislative session, lawmakers are trying to finalize a congressional map as part of the once-adecade redistricting process. “We are faced with a unique situation,” acknowledged committee Chairman Rep. Tom Leek, R-Ormond Beach. “This is the House’s attempt at continuing to protect the minority groups’ ability to elect a candidate of their choice, addressing (district) compactness concerns, and working to make sure we bring this process in for landing during the regular session.” DeSantis threatened to veto a congressional map that would maintain Democratic Congressman Al Lawson’s district, which is designed to help elect a Black candidate and stretches more than 200 miles from Jacksonville to west of Tallahassee. A map needs to be in place before candidate qualifying begins in mid-June. One of the House proposals Friday was considered a “primary” map, with the other a backup. The primary map (H 8017), introduced late Thursday, would eliminate the sprawling shape of Lawson’s Congressional District 5 and make it compact within Duval County. DeSantis has pushed for a similar compact design of the district, calling the existing configuration unconstitutional. But the state Senate’s proposed congressional map, which was approved last month, would keep the sprawling design of District 5, which was approved by the state Supreme Court in 2015. Lawmakers also have said keeping the design would avoid diminishing the ability of minorities to elect a representative of their choice. Rep. Brad Drake, R-Eucheeanna, and Rep. Cord Byrd, R-Neptune Beach, joined most Democrats in opposing the new House proposal. Byrd agreed with DeSantis’ contention that the current configuration of Lawson’s district is unconstitutional. “It has been suggested that the governor has a novel legal theory,” Byrd said. “I don’t think it’s novel at all. I think it’s well-grounded in the United States Constitution, the 14th and 15th amendments, which let’s remember, the 14th and 15th amendments were specifically written to prevent states from using race in voting and in redistricting.” Under the House proposal, 35 percent of the voting-age population in the revamped district would be Black, which could grow to more than 60 percent in a Democratic primary. The map would face court tests if it is ultimately approved by the full House and survives negotiations with the Senate and DeSantis’ veto pen. If the map is found unconstitutional, the House plan includes a backup map (H 8015), which has lines for Lawson’s district that are similar to the current configuration — Jacksonville to the Jackson County line.

Even before the emergence of the new plan, Democrats and other supporters of the Fair Districts amendment had raised concerns about a House proposal that was backed by the Congressional Redistricting Subcommittee. They said that proposal did not fully reflect the growth of Hispanic and Black populations in Central Florida and South Florida. Leek opened last Friday’s meeting by acknowledging a risk of legal challenge “is real,” while dismissing a request by Geller for a “functional analysis” of all districts, rather than just minority-access districts. “The partisan analysis of these maps that are not protected districts will lead us down the road to disaster,” Leek said. “Stop injecting the partisan nature into this process. Let us do our work.” Florida is picking up an additional congressional seat this year because of its population increase over the past decade. The primary map approved Friday could result in the number of GOP-held seats increasing from 16 to 18, based on 2020 voting patterns. The Senate’s proposal could lead to 17 Republican seats. DeSantis proposed a map that would drop the number of districts that historically have elected Black candidates from four to two, with both of the remaining districts in South Florida. It also would bump up the potential number of Republican districts from 16 to 20.

IMMIGRANT SONG

Faith-based and immigrant-advocacy groups are urging the DeSantis administration to scrap a proposed rule that would strip licenses of providers who offer shelter and other services to unaccompanied immigrant children. The proposal would do away with state licenses for organizations that house unaccompanied minors for the federal government while the children’s refugee and immigration status is being processed, unless the DeSantis and Biden administrations reach an agreement. The rule also would set up a process for providers to conduct welfare checks on children who have been released from shelters and reunified with family members or sponsors. DeSantis has repeatedly criticized the Biden administration on immigration issues during the past year and has taken steps such as sending Florida law-enforcement officers to Texas to aid with border issues. The Florida Department of Children and Families held an online hearing last week about “The federal government’s immigration enforcement policies have incentivized the trafficking of unaccompanied alien children, leading to unsafe situations for the UAC … Florida does not want to be complicit in those policies,” Danielle Thompson, a Department of Children and Families deputy general counsel, said. But critics of the proposed rule argued, in part, that the state failed to demonstrate that unaccompanied immigrant children should be treated differently than other dependent children. The rule is “arbitrary” and “impermissibly vague,” Jennifer Coberly, senior litigation attorney with the group Americans for Immigrant Justice, said. “The statute as it exists does not allow for groups of children to be singled out without any kind of qualitative analysis that distinguishes them,” she said. “This would appear to be a case of disparate treatment and a lack of equal protection.” DeSantis in January told the Biden administration that Florida “no longer wishes to be involved in the federal government’s UAC (unaccompanied alien children) resettlement program.” The governor, widely viewed as a top Republican contender for president in 2024, directed the Department of Children and Families to stop issuing or renewing licenses to providers that shelter the children.

itch McConnell knows how to win the midterm: Oppose everything Joe Biden does, blame him for anything that goes wrong, but never lay out an agenda that turns the election into a choice rather than a referendum. Last week, however, Sen. Rick Scott — a billionaire Medicare scammer who scammed Floridians into narrowly electing him governor twice and senator once, and who is in charge of electing Republicans to the Senate — threw a wrench into the machine with his “11 Point Plan to Rescue America,” a manifesto that mixes Newt Gingrich’s kick-thepoor ’90s with Trumpian authoritarianism, white Christian nationalism, overt attacks on voting rights, economic and constitutional illiteracy, and a Mack truck full of gaslighting. The 11 points speak for themselves: • Turn schools into patriotism factories where kids are forced to say the Pledge of Allegiance (unconstitutional) and teachers can get fired for making white children uncomfortable (i.e., “critical race theory”). Then again, none of that will matter after they close the Department of Education and implement a voucher program that ghettoizes public schools and routes billions of tax dollars to unregulated religious institutions. • End diversity training “or any woke ideological indoctrination” in the military — “woke” is Scott’s new favorite word — cut off funding for universities that try to diversify their student bodies, and proclaim as a point of fact that the nation is colorblind (the last 400 years never happened). • Impose more draconian sentences for violent and nonviolent crime, and expand qualified immunity so that cops can even more easily abuse their authority with impunity. Blue lives matter, etc. • “We will secure our border, finish building the wall, and name it after President Donald Trump.” • Give the president a line-item veto (not only unconstitutional, but it would render Congress irrelevant), prohibit debt ceiling increases (calamitous), tax poor and retired people (everyone should have “skin in the game”) and whatever “Socialism will be treated as a foreign combatant” means. • Enact term limits for members of Congress and civil servants (unconstitutional and will empower lobbyists), move government agencies out of Washington and “into the real world” (expensive), and cut IRS funding in half (presumably so Scott’s pals can get away with tax fraud).

• Ban same-day and automatic voter registration (because fraud, or whatever), unmanned collection boxes and public campaign financing (“No serious person would ever favor this,” says the billionaire), and don’t count absentee ballots that arrive after Election Day. But voter ID will be mandatory, of course. • Ban abortion, ban porn, give tax breaks to “nuclear families” and allow faith-based groups to discriminate against whomever they like. • God says trans people aren’t real, so doctors should be banned from treating trans children and trans men should be banned from women’s sports — which the party that just a few years ago ridiculed Title IX now finds sacred. (Strange, that.) Also, “no government forms will include questions about ‘gender identity’ or ‘sexual preference.’” • Ban Facebook and Twitter from banning users for hate speech or spreading misinformation (unconstitutional), “reject both the roots and the adherents of cancel culture in America,” and “stop investing federal retirement dollars with ‘woke’ fund managers and companies that put leftwing politics ahead of profits” (“woke” means clean energy, I presume). • Stop participating in peacekeeping missions, end imports from China (only $435 billion a year), “take climate change seriously but not hysterically” (i.e., do nothing) and “treat our enemies like enemies.” There it is: the Republican plan to “rescue” the country, which was humming along fine until Jan. 20, 2021. Most of it isn’t new, per se. What’s new is Scott’s attempt to marry the party’s anti-tax, pro-austerity wing with Trump’s populist, authoritarian wing. On the surface, that seems dubious. To the degree Trump had a policy outlook more sophisticated than “Build the Wall,” it was that he promised everything to everyone — cut taxes and increase spending

and cut the deficit — and pretended he never made those promises when they became inconvenient. Scott, however, wants to reframe the oligarchical (read: deeply unpopular) aspects of the GOP agenda as an extension of the culture wars: The “woke” left is sending your money to “undeserving” others; you don’t have to squint to see the racial subtext. From start to finish, this is an authoritarian document dressed up in the language of freedom. Like all variants of right-wing populism, it focuses the grievances of its target demo (a loss of cultural primacy) at scapegoats (the wokes). Consider how Scott begins his treatise: “The militant left now controls the entire federal government, the news media, academia, Hollywood, and most corporate boardrooms — but they want more. They are redefining America and silencing their opponents.” Put aside the obvious question — how much LSD does a man have to take to think of Joe Biden as the “militant left”? — and allow me to translate from Fox Newsese: Scott’s version of a white, Christian America that idealizes capitalists (for example, him) has lost favor in the cultural marketplace, and people who espouse racist, misogynistic or bigoted views now face consequences they didn’t before (which they call censorship). A multicultural society forces their children to learn more than the historical myths on which their purported superiority was constructed (which they call indoctrination). They are victims, forever and always. Scott is promising to avenge their victimhood by imposing their cultural norms on everyone else — in the name of freedom — and maintaining the socioeconomic caste system that has fostered the greatest level of inequality in a century. That is the Republican Party’s 2022 platform. It’s also a gift to Democrats — if they can figure out how to use it.

Director Michael Grandage is a legend in both London and New York and his latest creation, the spectacular Broadway tour of ‘Disney’s Frozen,’ is currently chilling at Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Center Director Michael Grandage is a leg-

end in both London and New York, having been honored by the Tony, Olivier, and Drama Desk awards for helming serious, star-studded dramas like Red and Frost/Nixon, as well as acclaimed revivals of Grand Hotel and Guys and Dolls. So when he spoke to me last week from his home in England, I would have loved to interview him at length about his work with Jude Law on Henry V, or The Cripple of Inishmaan with Daniel Radcliffe. But our half-hour conversation concentrated on his latest creation, the spectacular Broadway tour of Disney’s Frozen that’s currently chilling at Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Center through Sunday, March 6.

come from all ages or backgrounds [and] you’re trying to find the very best people. But you’re also trying to identify, particularly in the leading roles, people who may well become famous, because you’re getting them at a point in their career where that is still in development. I think that one of the joys of Frozen is its very young set of leads, and if you can get them at the right time, you can get before they break out. What was it like collaborating with composers Kristen and Robert Lopez and screenwriter Jennifer Lee on the screento-stage adaptation?

What I got when I arrived was three creators from the original film who were wide open to suggestions, which I suppose could have gone the other way. … It was a very highly collaborative process of really opening the film right up and creating all the new songs. … It was a phenomenally rewarding experience, but for me it was the reason that I wanted to do it, because I’d never had the What was your knowledge of Disney and joy of coming to a [musical] where everything Frozen prior to directing this show? So what’s interesting is that the tour has become the American production of Frozen.. … The American production is now represented by the tour rather than Broadway. Disney has made something positive out of that, I think, because there comes a wonderful sense of pride in thinking the only production you can see in America is one that is going to individual cities, sitting down and engaging with the whole nation, as opposed to the nation somehow believing they have to come to New York. I think at some level, that’s turned into a very positive message. The tour is actually a big beneficiary [of ] all the things we learned over an extended period to get right on Broadway. The one biggest change is that we created a whole new number for the tour that had never been seen on Broadway before. … The two leading ladies didn’t actually sing a song to each other; they didn’t sing together. So the composers went away and wrote a song called “I Can’t Lose You,” that was premiered in the touring version. What does Broadway’s Frozen offer for someone who has already experienced versions of the film in Disney’s theme parks or cruise ships?

There is a level of expectation for audiences that they want to see spectacle. What Disney takes out on tour, they wish to take something of the level of Broadway out on tour, [and] they certainly made sure that our budgets for producing the touring version allow us to do full-on spectacle. A number like “Let It Go” has to involve a transformation, and it obviously has to be done in a way that makes people fill up with wonder and excitement. And they’ve given us the tools to be able to do that. I don’t think anybody wants it to be exactly like the film; I think they want a different experience. Eat. More. Chicken. And more upscale

Mexican. It’ll be hard not to this year, given the spate of fried chicken joints and dolledup cantinas proliferating across the city. Hey, I’m not complaining, not after 2021 denied the restaurant industry a return to normalcy. It was a period of reckoning — still is — but through all this upheaval and transition, there’s chicken. And upscale Mexican. We’ll also see some big names coming to town — Michelin-starred chef Akira Back, fivetime James Beard Award nominee Ford Fry, and Norman Van Aken, who’ll reopen Norman’s in Dr. Phillips. We’ll see tasting menu–only concepts go brick and mortar, specifically Camille from chef Tung Phan and The Foreigner from Bruno Fonseca. And a private members-only club will open its tasting menu restaurant to the public in an effort to lure in the Michelin inspectors. The star wars are upon us, so let the jockeying and lobbying begin! And let the good eating continue. This list of newly opened and soon-to-open restaurants should help.

Alfo’s Pizza Fritta

The folks behind Stasio’s Italian Deli will branch out into pizza fritta — the handheld, deep-fried, doughy treat of Neapolitan origin. Some delays with the City of Orlando have stalled development, but there’s hope it will open by the end of the year. (Opening TBD, 2300 E. Robinson St., no website)

Anejo Cocina Mexicana

The upscale cantina going into the old New Standard space in Winter Park’s Ravaudage complex will feature a bevy of traditional Mexican fare along with a sizable list of tequila 18

The New World dishes served inside the high-tech Lake Nona Wave Hotel aren’t fashioned by robots, but robots have been known to patrol the lush dining room keeping an eye on guests indulging in the smokin’ offerings, that is, smoked cocktails, smoked scallops, smoked romesco and smoked feta (served with charred octopus). The Bandbox

A 1920s, Art Deco-inspired, spirit-free speakeasy will certainly be a unique and, perhaps, much-needed addition to the Ivanhoe Village bar scene. Bitebound

The old downtown Hubbly Bubbly space gets a noticeable upgrade with this breakfast, lunch, dinner and late-night

Bumby Arcade Food Hall

At this 18-stall food hall incorporating the gorgeous space of the Orchid Garden on Church Street, vendors will be as worthy as the Victorian-esque architecture — though Susuru Yatai, the Japanese street food concept by Susuru’s Lewis Lin, will no longer be a part of the food hall. (Lin plans to open a Japanese street food concept in a different location.) They do promise “an exciting selection of local favorites.” (Opening TBD, 116 W. Church St., no website)

Café-Boutique Piano

A restaurant across from Hannibal’s on the Square featuring the very wide breadth of “European” cuisine as well as nightly piano shows sounds like a match made in … well, somewhere. If anything, it’ll add a bit of intrigue to the Hannibal Square dining scene. (Opening spring, 558 W. New England Ave., no website)

Café Don Juan

The Puerto Rican chain will serve its tostadas, empanadas and coffee out of the City Place mixed-use complex across the street from Krispy Kreme in Winter Park. A full breakfast and lunch menu will also be offered. (Opening April, 1100 Orlando Ave., Winter Park, cafedonjuan.com)

Camille

Chef Tang Phan’s dazzling French-Vietnamese chef’s tasting concept currently at the Neighbors at East End Market will go brick-and-mortar this year, and deservedly so. A specific location hasn’t been announced as yet, but we can tell you that it’ll be nearby to East End Market. (Opening December, no location announced, exploretock. com/camille)

Cantina Catrina

The Día de Los Muertos-themed restaurant brings its elevated brand of Mexican fare to the entrance of the dining pavilion at the Florida Mall. The colorful platters are as Instagrammable as the space itself. (Open, 8001 S. Orange Blossom Trail, cantinacatrina.com)

Catrinas Mexican Fusion

This Mexican restaurant that took over the old Garibaldi’s location claims a focus on “Mexican fusion,” but the tacos, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas and weighty specialties don’t veer too far from south-of-the-border flavors. Chick’nCone

The global chain specializing in handheld waffles stuffed with fried chicken will make its foray into the Central Florida market when it opens in the old George’s Gourmet Cookies space in Winter Park. Six sauces, three sides and three waffle crunch milkshakes are also offered. (Opening March, 501 N. Orlando Ave., Winter Park, chickncone.com)

Chiffon Culture Bakery Café

Winter Springs will soon be home to one of the most popular bakeries in the city, serving the following and more: Japanese mochi donuts, chiffon cakes, egg tarts, cream puffs, boba tea and gourmet coffee. Colbie’s Southern Kissed Chicken

The fried chicken boom shows no signs of stopping, and Colbie’s is going all in. They put fried chicken in buns, wraps, waffles, donuts, biscuits, salads, dumplings and chili. If you ask real nice, they might blend it into one of their shakes, but probably not. (Opening March, 3267 Vineland Road, Kissimmee, eatatcolbies.com)

Coyoacán Cocina & Tequila

The folks behind Daytona’s Maria Bonita Mexican Restaurant will open this colorful, upscale concept in the former Lale Turkish Cuisine space in the Park Place plaza in Heathrow. (Opening spring, 7025 County Road 46A, Lake Mary, no website)

Cowboy Chicken

The Dallas-based chain has been around for 40 years so they must be doing something right. Slow-roasted, woodfired rotisserie chicken, by all accounts, is something. Crispy drumsticks and pulled brisket too. (Opening late spring/early summer, 3290 Margaritaville Blvd., Kissimmee, cowboychicken.com)

CrunCheese Korean Hot Dog

The Las Vegas-based outfit will bring their corn dogs on crack to Waterford Lakes. The cheese pulls are epic, but the flavor combinations are the main draw: rice cake, squid ink and the famous potato hot dog rolled in a bit of sugar to bring out the savory. (Opening June, Waterford Lakes Town Center, 413 N. Alafaya Trail, cruncheesehotdog.com)

Cupid’s Hot Dogs

Cupid’s is an institution in the San Fernando Valley, having served their Vienna all-beef weenies since 1946. Both the “Triangle,” dressed with mustard, onions and relish, and the eponymous dog with mustard, onions and chili are Cupid’s classics. Hoping we’ll also get rollerskating carhops, like the original. (Opening March, 1515 Lee Road, cupidshotdogs.net)

Dave’s Hot Chicken

The L.A.-based chain will open its first Orlando-area eatery in the old Crispers space at Waterford Lakes Town Center this spring, followed by another location in the old World of Beer space in Altamonte Springs this summer. No matter the location, you can bet the Carolina Reaper-spiced tenders will sting just the same. (Opening June, Waterford Lakes Town Center, 413 N. Alafaya Trail, daveshotchicken.com)

Debonair Supper Club

The 6,300-square-foot downtown space once home to Chela Tequila & Tacos will soon house a “modern day supper club” reportedly offering “a one-of-a-kind experience that encompasses some of the best aspects of cuisine, mixology, modern art, and entertainment into one lively and comfortable space.” (Opening August, 183 S. Orange Ave., no website)

Dolce

Light shareables, salads, panini and rice bowls aside, this intimate restaurant across from Lake Eola gets its sweet on with crepes stuffed with everything from strawberries and Nutella to s’mores. Julius Meinl coffee is a bonus. (Open, 500 E. Central Blvd., dolcethorntonpark.com)

Edoboy

The eight-person standing sushi bar will feature nigiri sushi and a selection of hand rolls (comprising local daily catch as well as fish flown in weekly from Japan), all served inside a 700-square-foot space. The eat-and-go sushi joint is from Sonny Nguyen of Domu and Tori Tori, with Tyler Inthavongsa, who worked for four years at Domu, as lead sushi chef. (Opening April, 728 N. F&D Thornton Park

Sister resto to the Lake Mary outpost, F&D brings the same brand of higher-end Mexican fare in an eyecatching space. They got San Antonio-style puffy tacos too. (Open, 617 E. Central Blvd., fdcantina.com)

Foreigner

Chef Bruno Fonseca will lend permanence to the “Foreigner Experience” — his high-end chef’s tasting pop-up concept — when it goes brick-and-mortar in Audubon Park. A move down the street to a space next to Redlight Redlight may allow for the addition of a 10-seat table, in addition to the 10-seat counter and kitchen. No matter the number, Fonseca’s multicourse, prixfixe menu will draw from global influences and place focus on luxe local ingredients including Florida beef, fish and oysters. The Food Factory

This food hall-ish venue being built as part of the Oviedo on the Park development will see seven “micro restaurants” run by local chefs, restaurateurs and food truck owners surrounding the Factory Bar — a rooftop bar and restaurant. Gogi Korean BBQ, Hotpot & Sushi

There’s a lot packed into that restaurant name but they’re not lying — the restaurant will offer all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue, hotpot and sushi out of a sizable space that once housed a Golden Corral. (Opening spring, 7251 W. Colonial Drive, find them on Facebook)

Grilled Cheezus

The second location of this sandwich shop will bring Wallace & Gromit levels worth of cheeeeese to the old Bites & Bubbles space in Mills 50. Tomato bisque dipper included with every sandwich. (Opening November/ December, 914 N. Mills Ave., grilledcheezus.com)

The Hall on the Yard

The swanky Ivanhoe Village food hall was plagued with issues when it opened, but things are getting smoother. Of the nine restaurants under its roof, the Chef & I consistently delivers the best fare. The indoor/outdoor cocktail bar is a beauty, and the outdoor beer garden with pour-it-yourself taps is ideal for game day. Note: Neither the food nor the booze come cheap. Hangry Bison Winter Garden

The burger joint that opened inside Winter Park Village back in 2018 was supposed to have opened another outpost in the Exchange on historic Plant Street last year, but supply-chain issues and issues hiring workers have led to further delays. When it does, expect a bevy of burgers as well as craft cocktails, bourbon and whiskey flights to be served out of the 4,100-square-foot space. (Opening April, 270 W. Haven Kitchen

Another looker inside the high-tech Lake Nona Wave Hotel, Haven specializes in pretty pan-Mediterranean cuisine — muhammara, gazpacho, grilled octopus, branzino a la planacha and the like. Holden Hub

The social gathering place in Edgewood will feature both micro and anchor restaurants. Bad As’s Sandwiches, SoDo Wine Company and the Great Greek have already signed on. Expect a pizzeria, Mexican restaurant, vegan fare and a beer garden. (Opening fall, 4710 S. Orange Ave., no website)

Honolulu Harry’s

Finicky College Parkers should take to poke bowls and Spam inside this “modern island social” on the ground floor of the Wellesley condos. If not, there are plenty of Italian joints along Edgewater Drive. (Opening March, 2305 Edgewater Drive, facebook.com/honoluluharryscp)

Jeff’s Bagel Run Winter Garden

Jojo’s Shake Bar

Kang’s Kitchen

The Las Vegas import is expanding in the Southeast with locations in Georgia and this very soon-to-open outpost across the parking lot from Lotte Plaza Market. Knife Burger

Rejoice, burger fiends … the Ozersky is coming to town. Chef John Tesar’s highly lauded concept is set to take the

Lazy Moon Pizza Maitland

Lipa Rooftop by Akira Back

The Michelin-starred chef and man who lost to Bobby Flay in the “spinach battle” episode of Iron Chef America, Akira Back is behind this Ette Hotel restaurant on the sixth-floor rooftop. Expect Asian haute cuisine complemented by a zero-alcohol bar and lounge with panoramic theme park views. (Opening summer, Ette Hotel, 3001 Sherberth Road, Kissimmee, liparooftop.com)

Meet Fresh

The Taiwanese chain was founded 15 years ago with the goal of creating fresh and somewhat healthy-ish desserts. Since then, they’ve sprouted across the globe, with the first Florida location slated for the Westside Crossings plaza. The menu is filled with icy taro balls, shaved ice, tofu pudding, egg waffles and milk tea. (Opening TBD, 5144 W. Colonial Drive, meetfresh.us)

Moderne

Not too much has been revealed about this restaurant by the Maki Hibachi folks going in next to Tasty Wok in Mills 50. What we do know is that GDP DesignBuild, the firm who designed Tori Tori, Mamak and, yes, Maki Hibachi, is designing the layout here. Contemporary Asian cuisine? That’s a good bet. The Mongolorian

A Mongolian barbecue joint is set to open on Colonial Drive, but not just any old Mongolian barbecue joint. This one will allow patrons to build their own bowls from a selection of starches, proteins, vegetables and sauces, then cook them up in seven tabletop “robot” stir fryers for a showy element. MyLounge

Norman’s

It’s been a long time coming, but buildout of one of the most hotly anticipated restaurants is well underway in Dr. Phillips. Soon, we’ll be relishing the new “New World” cuisine devised by Norman Van Aken and his trusted chef de cuisine Carlos Robles Molina. Oro

The high-energy vibes brought by Ava just up the street will be duplicated on the southern end of Park Avenue when Oro, run by the same group that operates downtown nightclubs Celine, Ember and Tier, opens. At

Paris Baguette Bakery Cafe

The Korean chain with more than 4,000 locations worldwide will give the Glass Knife a run for its money when it opens across the street in the Palm Hills development in Winter Park. Interesting note: Local creative marketing agency Push, which was involved early on with Hubbly Bubbly Falafel Shop (RIP), has been charged with the bakery’s worldwide rebrand. Park Avenue Tavern

The old Dexter’s space in Hannibal Square will get a much-needed refresh when this Manhattan import moves in later this year. Peach Valley Café Maitland

A popular breakfast destination that stood in Maitland for 27 years will be replaced by another popular breakfast joint when Peach Valley Café takes over the building that used to house a First Watch. Pho Ga Hien Vuong

Z Asian owners Hien Pham and Huong Nguyen will open a pho ga concept in the old Zero Degrees space, but in addition to the eponymous Vietnamese chicken soup, guests can feast on com ga hai nam (Hainanesestyle chicken and rice), goi ga (chicken salad) and other chicken dishes. Pig Floyd’s Winter Park

Pigzza

The collab between Pig Floyd’s and Stasio’s Italian Deli (right next door to Will’s Pub, on the corner of Mills and Oregon) should produce some magnifico pizzas, melding barbecue notes with Italian flavors. Torchy’s Tacos

The Austin-based taco chain will set up inside the redeveloped Oak Grove Shoppes in Altamonte, offering both flour and corn tortillas. PREMIERES THURSDAY: The Dropout — Star Amanda Seyfried gets eight episodes to sell us on her portrayal of disgraced biotech mogul Elizabeth Holmes, whose allegedly revolutionary blood-testing method was discovered to be a sham. Mere weeks ago, the real Holmes was found guilty on four counts of fraud, which has to have been a big relief for the producers of this program. Imagine if they had gone to all that trouble and the only charge that stuck was tailgating or something. (Hulu) He-Man and the Masters of the Universe — In Season 2 of Kevin Smith’s reboot, Skeletor is out to raise an army of snake soldiers from the dead. And here you were thinking Rick Scott had no legislative agenda! (Netflix) Joe vs. Carole — If you thought Tiger King 2 had represented the last gasp of exploitation surrounding Joe Exotic and his bête noire, Carole Baskin, here comes a questionably necessary dramatization of the whole overexplored affair. John Cameron Mitchell of Hedwig and the Angry Inch fame plays Joe, with Kate McKinnon in the role of Carole. McKinnon, by the way, missed the first seven episodes of the current season of SNL just so she could shoot this thing. Christ, it takes less time to shoot five tigers and your chief business rival. Or so I’ve heard! (Peacock) Little Ellen — With the arrival of Season 2, the concept of a 7-year-old Ellen DeGeneres suddenly doesn’t seem nearly as absurd. But that’s only because we’ve since caught wind of the plans for Little Matt Lauer. (HBO Max) Our Flag Means Death — The 18th century’s idea of a career change inspires a comedy series loosely based on the life of

Stede Bonnet, an aristocrat who reinvented himself as a pirate. The show was created by David Jenkins, although most folks are probably going to refer to it as a Taika Waititi project, since ol’ Vampire Hitler himself is a co-executive producer, directed the pilot and appears as Blackbeard. But I’m sure the confusion won’t bother these guys; they’re pirates, not cryrates. (HBO Max) Power Rangers: Dino Fury — The mightily morphin’ franchise moves to Netflix for Season 2 of its latest story arc, bringing its tally to six homes in 29 years. One more, and they all qualify for refugee pay. (Netflix) The Scary of Sixty-First — At the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival, the Best First Feature award went to director Dasha Nekrasova’s shocker about a pair of roommates who experience unsettling personal changes after moving into an apartment that may have once belonged to Jeffrey Epstein. How unsettling? For one thing, they start to think he actually may have killed himself. (Shudder) Star Trek: Picard — Season 2 finds our hero trapped in the 21st century and hunting desperately for a way to escape. (Hard same, Jean-Luc. Hard same.) Cast members from Star Trek: The Next Generation who will show up along the way include John de Lancie and Whoopi Goldberg. Wait, isn’t it the history of the 20th century she should be studying? (Paramount+) Surviving Paradise: A Family Tale — Regé-Jean Page won’t be back to sling his dingus around when Season 2 of Bridgerton drops later in the month; instead, he’s narrating this nature documentary about the fragile ecosystem of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Come to think of it, the Okavango Delta totally sounds like something Simon and Daphne would get up to on the stairs. (Netflix) The Tourist — Jamie Dornan takes center stage in a BBCproduced miniseries about a British traveler who loses his memory after he’s chased by a tanker truck in the Australian Outback. I got tanked at the Outback once, and boy do I wish I could forget it. (HBO Max)

Lucy and Desi — For those who thought the casting of Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball was a misfire, here comes a documentary about the salad days of Desilu to remind you that maybe Lucy herself wasn’t all that to begin with. (Search your heart, says this Honeymooners fan. You know it to be true.) Coming to us straight from Sundance, the doc was directed by Amy Poehler, who has a special kinship to the material by dint of not being funny herself. (As a matter of fact, I don’t care whose feelings I hurt, says this Nasim Pedrad stan.) (Amazon Prime) More Than This — From Down Under comes a teen drama that was created and written by actual teens. I know, I know: How crazy to think any youngster would know more about their life than Mindy Kaling! Anyway, the show concerns a class of high-school students and their teacher who have to cope with problems that are uniquely Australian in nature. What’s that? You didn’t know Australia’s kids were under specific pressures? Listen, you try to fight off a bully while you’re standing upside down. (Paramount+) Pieces of Her — The 2018 novel becomes a serial thriller, with Toni Collette as a woman who begins to question her life’s very foundation after watching her mother efficiently neutralize a mass shooter. Hands up if you remember when the most disillusioning thing they could get up to was kissing Santa Claus. (Netflix)

PREMIERES TUESDAY: Chip and Potato — The kindergarten set gets a third season of animated adventures with Chip the pug, whose “toy” mouse, Potato, is actually real. Calvin and Hobbes without the human element? Smart move. We ruin everything. (Netflix) Last One Standing — Somehow of a piece with Squid Game, Murderville AND Dr. Phil, this Japanese series sees comics vying for position in a serious drama by improvising their way through soul-baring monologues. Prompts include “The Time When I Was Hurt” and “Words I’ve Been Shocked By.” Man, Cardi and Megan would not last five minutes on here. (Netflix) Perfect World: A Deadly Game — In a two-part docuseries, video gamers discover that one of their number might have killed his family. Makes sense, since it’s an activity you can engage in without leaving your mom’s basement. (Peacock) Ruxx — Romania is the setting for a series about a young woman who has to balance her personal life with the demands of her real-estate job. The show itself was shot in Bucharest, but wouldn’t it have been a fun switch if they had filmed it in Manhattan and just tried to pass it off? (HBO Max) Taylor Tomlinson: Look at You — In her second full-length stand-up special, the comic offers us her thoughts on the subjects of mental illness, grief and dating. You know what they say: If you can even tell them apart at this point, you’ve got nothing to complain about! (Netflix)

STORAGE WARS ‘Storage Music Unit’ is a blistering and exhilarating new chapter in Central Floridian free jazz BY MATTHEW MOY ER

he album Storage Music Unit starts with a buzz of distortion and a voice idly suggesting, “Just make some sounds.” And with a jarring scream of saxophone and avalanche of drums, it’s on for the next 40-ish minutes’ worth of free-jazz physicality. This sweaty, ear-bleedingly loud rush of unfettered creativity makes up the recently released eponymous debut by Storage Music Unit, an ad hoc group of three young Central Floridian musical polymaths. The members of Storage Music Unit — Derek Dunn, Zachary Hickerson and Syoma Klochko — will be familiar faces to local music fans across taste and genre. Dunn plays as half of space-synth duo Aaron’s Home, and recently debuted a frenetic solo endeavor of tape loops and live drumming. Tampa Bay resident Hickerson plays saxophone and game calls as part of loose free-jazz collective Bongus, as a duo with Thomas Milovac (the two just released their own album on Iowa’s Personal Archives imprint), and as part of Tampa post-punk band Clang! Klochko is arguably the busiest of all, splitting time between Bongus, Florida Man, Dougie Flesh & the Slashers, various ensembles with Milovac, solo recording work and monthly improv nights at Will’s Pub (dubbed “A Protean Assemblage”). The trio became acquainted through sharing bills together and playing as part of various Milovac concerns, chief among them the unpredictable Bongus. Each admired the work the others were doing, and some form of collaboration was a hazy goal in the far-off future. When the pandemic left all three with too much time on their hands as 2020 stretched into infinity, a plan was hatched to do some recording in a storage unit Dunn had been using for his various creative outlets. “It was really convenient because at the time you could go there 24/7 and play drums, which you can’t do in most places,” says Dunn. “I think some Boomers were playing that

particular night too, various classic rock cover bands.” Storage Music Unit is the product of a single marathon recording session from October of that year, and it is the sound of three musicians urging each other on to new heights of freeform abandon through adventurous and ear-splitting volume recorded to Dunn’s reel-to-reel tape machine. “We came into it knowing that it was going to be a really visceral session,” says Klochko. “We all felt that we could bring all of the built-up energy from all of the bullshit that we’d been dealing with that year.” Hickerson’s saxophone, Klochko’s percussion and Dunn’s guitar/contact mic combo sound absolutely molten and possessed. “There was one time where I was bowing my guitar with scissors, and I thought, ‘This kind of sounds like a Sonic Youth song,’” says Dunn. “It’s a goal sometimes.” “All I remember is the harsh noise,” says Hickerson. “I usually don’t wear earplugs when I play — I should — and it just got to a point, like that My Bloody Valentine level, where you’re like, ‘Phew.’ But you gotta feel it.” Storage Music Unit is place-specific music in all the best ways. And a swampy October evening in Florida, crammed into a sweltering, non-conditioned metal box, is a recipe for extremity. “There were times I was using the storage unit as a percussive instrument,” says Klochko. “Dragging my sticks down the serrated metal of the wall … we were sharing pots and pans that they’d brought for me to play at the session.” “Because it was so confined it was like being near Merzbow with [Dunn’s] contact mics,” remembers Hickerson. “Well, you play very loud,” answers Dunn. “Hey, don’t forget me, I was playing loud too,” deadpans Klochko. Storage Music Unit is indeed loud. It’s a solid wall of blown-out, bruising sonics, a dead sprint that only relents

for brief moments of anxious respite where the trio do the equivalent of reloading cannons before the shelling resumes. The album ends with a long coda of total instrumental decay before one of the members utters a sarcastic “Yay.” And then it’s over. Besides functioning as an on-the-fly studio and rehearsal space, the storage unit is in many ways the fourth member of the group, with the close quarters pushing Dunn, Hickerson and Klochko into more extreme responses to each other’s playing. “I think we all kind of knew that from the start,” agrees Klochko. “That’s why it was both the name of the album and the band.” “The soul of the storage unit,” jokes Hickerson. A slightly edited version of the recording was snatched up posthaste by Pittsburgh experimental label Orb Tapes and pressed to cassette — which, in a surreal turn, makes the trio labelmates with Sun Ra … and the infamous Bastard Noise. “The recordings immediately piqued my interest for a few reasons. I’m a big fan of hectic free jazz and free-improv to begin with, and I’m also very interested in acoustics and recording media,” Orb Tapes head James Searfoss told Orlando Weekly. “As you know from listening, these recordings are absolutely obliterated in the best sort of way. … The gritty, lo-fi, blown-out nature of the recordings is a perfect fit for the style of playing.” The session on that fateful October night almost didn’t happen, as Klochko had been laid low by a painful stomach bug for the entire day, unable to eat or drink anything. “When you’re playing through the pain, when you’re playing a painful set of music … you can’t do that with just anybody,” says Klochko. “You’ve got to do that with people who can get on your wavelength and respond to your pain and match it.” “Being down with the sickness?” laughs Hickerson. “They were getting down with my sickness that day. And for that I was so grateful, and it helped me get down with their sickness as well,” says Klochko, only half-joking. “It’s like running through the woods with your friends,” says Dunn. “You’re like, ‘I’m tired, I’m covered in mud, this is amazing.’” Storage Music Unit is available now for purchase, download and streaming through Orb Tapes’ Bandcamp page.

here are many Dodies in this world. Dodie Kazanjian is a journalist who runs the Gallery Met, attached to the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Dodie Stevens had a hit with “Pink Shoe Laces” in 1959. Dodie Douglas was a fictional character on My Three Sons. Dodie Horton is a conservative state representative in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. Dodie McGuiness is a leader of Sinn Fein. There are many Dodies, but this is our preferred Dodie of the moment, and there is only one like her. Dorothy Miranda “Dodie” Clark turns 27 next month, and she’ll be spending her birthday in the middle of the biggest year of her career. Dodie’s been releasing music since 2016, but her debut album, Build a Problem, was released in May of last year. It rose as high as No. 3 on the U.K. pop charts, and climbed to the No. 4 slot on the U.S. folk charts. She’s peaked at No. 115 on the Billboard charts in America, but that number is likely to rise a bit, now that the Essex native is back touring this country.

She has frequently collaborated with fellow singersongwriters like Jacob Collier, Tessa Violet (whom we’ve written about before), Julie Nunes and the exceptionally talented Orla Gartland, who is actually joining her on part of the tour. (Gartland’s work comes with the fullest endorsement we can possibly offer, Liz Cooper-level loveliness.) You can see them singing backup in each other’s videos, such as Gartland’s sublime “Zombie” or Nunes’ heart-stopping version of Ariana Grande’s “God Is a Woman.” This leg of the Build a Problem tour encompasses some 31 shows in just 42 days, taking Dodie from coast to coast, north to south. At press time, she’s just finished a week’s run that hit Chicago, Philly, Boston and Brooklyn. Dodie plays the Plaza Live this Saturday, and that show sold out far in advance, as did her upcoming shows in Seattle and L.A. In between, she’ll bring her sound to industry hotbeds like Austin, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, before going on a run of 23 shows across Europe. She will, of course, be vlogging every step of the way.

Opening for Dodie on most of these dates is her friend Lizzy McAlpine, a Berklee grad from Philly whose third album, Five Seconds Flat, will be released on April 8. By that time, audiences will be already prepped for it, after this run with Dodie. One would expect to see them both active on the festival circuit this summer. Dodie has been making music for nearly a decade, but she’s probably best-known for her YouTube channels, which have over 3 million total subscribers. A lot of the content relates to music, but just as much relates to her interior life, her habits and rituals, loves and lovers, good days and bad. To call her style “painfully earnest” would venture into cliché, so instead let’s think of it more as a sort of hyper-transparency. Her online content is characterized by an almost aggressive amiability. It’s one thing to be an open book, but it’s another to lead the audience through the actual printing process. Fans get to see her material as it comes together, piece by piece, which only enhances the experience of fandom. In addition to Build a Problem, Dodie also has about 19 earlier tracks available across her three previous EPs: Intertwined (2016), You (2017) and Human (2019). As much fun as she’s always been, it’s also been clear that Dodie was a work in progress. This pandemic era has been when all the pieces really came together, like Voltron. In these times of crisis, Dodie Clark is the hero that we need.

By now, we should all be a little tired of seeing a bunch of guys’ names all over music credits. It’s changing, sure. But it’s not changed yet. It will, though, if more artists like Orlando’s Jaquese Powell get into the game. Under the moniker Jaywah, she’s a young, independent R&B act who’s not just a singer but also a songwriter, pianist, violinist, producer and sound engineer. And her just-released sophomore collection — the Attitude EP — is almost entirely made by herself. She produced all but one of the seven songs and otherwise wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered the whole affair. Since her 2020 debut EP Unmute, this follow-up already shows a deeper crystallization of Jaywah’s sound toward a more distilled aesthetic greater than the sum of her initial influences. Less busy and more concentrated, the music is kept to a tasteful essence, giving her voice full room to do its thing. And that thing is a clarion flight of melody, agility and controlled power. It all adds up to an effective merge of classic R&B elegance with modern outlook. This record is a document that shows Jaywah poised with more comfort and confidence than ever. Attitude now streams everywhere. Death to the patriarchy, even if it’s one silky song like this at a time.

First, professor Eric Wright and musicians Dimas Sánchez and Thobos Lubamba will drop knowledge on the history of Congolese rhythms and their transatlantic legacy. Afterwards, Sánchez will lead the seven-member Afro Latin Jazz Project in a performance that will bring all that rich history to dazzling life. I attended a very similar event also helmed by Sánchez downtown at the In-Between Series in 2019 and it was a revelation of movement and enlightenment. Masks are required at all times at the venue and, as with all Timucua shows, a totally safe livestream option is also offered for this donation-based event. The Man, Sir Chloe: So the big-name tours are starting to come back again but you’re still a little freaked at the prospect of being boxed in with a bunch of potential carriers. I so feel you. Well, this bill featuring British pop eccentrics alt-J, Alaskan breakouts Portugal. The Man and rising New

York band Sir Chloe offers a star-studded package for the indie-minded in a welcome outdoor festival setting. (5 p.m. Sunday, March 6, Orlando Amphitheater, $69.50-$99.50) Spirit of the Beehive, Body Meat: Back in 2017, Philadelphia’s Spirit of the Beehive stunned from out of nowhere as an unknown opener for the Districts at the Social. Now, although still relatively obscure, they return as darlings of the indie cognoscenti on the wings of an adventurous album on Saddle Creek (Entertainment, Death) that proves that the only direction their wondrously weird psychpop vision looks is outward. Also featured will be Body Meat, a fellow Philly act whose futuristic and intensely rhythmic conception of pop is equally daring and out there. Expect this one to be an accomplished and kaleidoscopic display of experimentalism. (8 p.m. Sunday, March 6, Will’s Pub, $15) Songs Matter Sunday with Matt Woods: With deep ties to the Orlando music scene and notably frequent local appearances, soulful country-rocker Matt Woods may be a Tennessee native but he’s an honorary Orlandoan. He’s back this time for another residency, bringing his roving “Songs Matter” series down to hold weekly court at Lil Indies for the month of March. The campfire-style shows will feature Woods and guests in song and conversation. The Orlando stand kicks off this Sunday with Kentucky company Adam Lee, while subsequent editions feature guests like Sean Holcomb (March 13), Lauris Vidal (March 20) and Tennessee’s Jon Whitlock (March 27). Many other spiritual mentors I’ve enjoyed learning from say that meditation can also be a discipline to achieve ecstasy, spiritual bliss and tranquility. And I suspect that’s what Virgo meditators should emphasize in the coming weeks. You people are in a phase when you can cultivate extraordinary encounters with that all fun stuff. If you’re not a meditator, now would be a good time to try it out. I recommend the books Meditation for Beginners by Jack Kornfield and How to Meditate by Pema Chödrön. LIBRA (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): Comedian Fred Allen observed, “It is probably not love that makes the world go around, but rather those mutually supportive alliances through which partners recognize their dependence on each other for the achievement of shared and private goals.” That’s an unromantic thing to say, isn’t it? Or maybe it isn’t. Maybe it’s very romantic, even enchanting, to exult in how our allies help us make our dreams come true — and how we help them make their dreams come true.
