The city of Winter Park wants to widen Fairbanks Avenue and is in the process of buying up properties on the north side of the block, which would take down Austin’s as well as other businesses including the Wine Barn, Krungthep Tea Time and Spatz Billiards. @Ebenezer and the Scrooges This isn’t right, at all. ¶ Walk hard Once again, Orlando has come out on top in an annual study ranking the deadliest cities for pedestrians. The City Beautiful was named the most dangerous metro area to walk around in 2020, as well as the most dangerous metro area to walk in for the last decade. Orlando

made it to the top thanks to our rate of three pedestrian deaths per 100,000 people between 2010 and 2019. Perhaps illustrating the problem, many of our commenters came out on the side of … drivers. @Brandon Hudson Tell them to stop jaywalking at random and actually use the crosswalks that are there and stop crossing in front of people that have green lights or walking diagonally across intersections like that’s OK. @Chris Ballesteros This sounds like we have really bad drivers, but I see bad pedestrians every day crossing in the middle of traffic rather than waiting at a crosswalk. It should read that we have the least intelligent pedestrians. @Betsy Mayer Orlando has uneducated pedestrians. Every morning on Highway 50 I see people in dark clothing cross the highway mid-block. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen good pedestrians wait on the corner for the light to change only to cross against the traffic. Orlando/Orange County needs a pedestrian education campaign. @Anthony Alvarez As someone who is disabled and has to walk everywhere when on my own, I can attest to drivers not paying attention to pedestrians in the crosswalk because they are too busy focusing on the traffic to jump in while making a turn. I’ve had drivers block pathways, been hit by a driver while crossing with my guide dog, because they were trying to jump into traffic and didn’t want to wait. While there are some pedestrians making bad decisions, I’ve dealt with way more careless drivers. @Kenny Rowland Traffic laws are just suggestions to most Floridians.

Florida Ag Commissioner Nikki Fried floats ‘hunch’ that Gov. Ron DeSantis secretly had COVID-19 last year Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, widely expected to run against Gov. Ron DeSantis next year, called it a “hunch.” But she spurred speculation last week when she floated the idea that DeSantis was sidelined in the fall by COVID-19 — a claim his office rejects. After a Cabinet meeting last Tuesday, Fried acknowledged having no proof for her supposition, initially made during a podcast. Her theory links a public absence by DeSantis in November to a time when he was said to be working on a vaccine-distribution plan that Fried says never materialized. “It’s just a personal hunch that … when somebody goes MIA and claims that it’s because they’re working on something, and then there’s no productivity from that, that was my assumption,” she said. The governor’s office issued a statement denying that DeSantis had the virus. “The governor has stated on several occasions that he has never tested positive for COVID-19,” DeSantis spokeswoman Meredith Beatrice said in an email. Asked last week about the claim while in Sumterville, DeSantis snapped, “That’s false, that’s a conspiracy theory.” The kerfuffle came after Fried took part in a five-minute interview with Molly Jong-Fast of the Daily Beast’s “The New Abnormal” podcast. In the interview, released last week, Fried surmised DeSantis came down with the virus in the weeks after the November elections. “He went MIA for three weeks of November, claiming that he was working on some statewide plan,” Fried, the only statewide elected Democrat, told Jong-Fast. “My take is that he probably had COVID and didn’t want to tell people. When the vaccines first came to our state, there was no communication, there was no plan. No one knew where the vaccines were going to land.” The interview was more wide-ranging, hitting on Florida’s political landscape, vaccination efforts and concerns about the state welcoming spring breakers as new strains of the virus expand. However, the show was promoted as “Florida’s Top Dem: Ron DeSantis Hid His COVID.” DeSantis appeared before reporters at the Capitol on Nov. 4 and appeared on conservative cable TV shows in the days after the election, most notably in a Nov. 6 interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham in which he suggested the legislatures of Michigan and Pennsylvania should override vote results in selecting presidential electors. DeSantis’ next public appearance, according to his daily calendar, was Nov. 11, when he gave a remote interview via
video with the Florida Channel as the state was threatened by Hurricane Eta. He met with members of Visit Florida in Tallahassee on Nov. 13, according to the calendar DeSantis was next seen in public when he appeared Nov. 17 at the organization session of the Legislature. — Dara Kam and Jim Turner, NSF
Orange County Mayor Demings comes out swinging against DeSantis over COVID-related fines A day after Gov. Ron DeSantis unilaterally canceled COVID-19-related fines imposed by counties around Florida, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings came out swinging during a news briefing. Starting off his remarks with a surprisingly direct response, Demings took aim at DeSantis by name, with an actual “here we go” preface. “I believe Governor DeSantis loves to create confusion,” said Demings. And with that salvo fired, it was off to the races. “There is nothing unprecedented about local governments trying to provide for and protect its residents during a pandemic,” Demings said. “We have been decisive in taking action when the governor was slow to act. We received many calls from our residents demanding businesses and individuals be held accountable for failing to take precautions to stop the spread of a deadly virus which has infected 2 million people in our state, with 117,000 infected in Orange County alone and 1138 who died of the virus in our county.” Demings further posited that DeSantis’ “inaction” in enforcing health and safety guidelines “likely contributed to the spread of the virus” in Florida and went on to say that he is directing the county attorney to explore legal options to work around this order. On March 10, DeSantis issued an executive order that overturned all fines imposed by local governments against businesses and individuals for flouting health and safety guidelines to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. DeSantis called them “unprecedented local government restrictions” and his executive order is, improbably, retroactive, going so far as to cancel fines all the way back to March 2020. This will not apply to coronavirus-related penalties levied by the state. The executive order effectively takes away the regulatory teeth of Orange County’s coronavirus strike teams, who have been issuing fines throughout the area since December, after Demings issued his own countywide executive order mandating penalties. However, Demings says that the strike teams will continue their work. — Matthew Moyer
Parramore Community Garden receives $50,000 donation from Orlando realtors The neighborhood of Parramore is still uniquely underserved when it comes to groceries. The historic community on the west side of Orlando has done for itself for years, with activists building and maintaining a garden in a formerly trash-filled vacant lot over the last decade. That crucial source of neighborhood pride and fresh veggies just received a big boost from Orlando-area realtors, who donated $50,000 to the garden initiative to update equipment and otherwise beautify the green space of 19 individual plots. The donation is the largest in the history of the Orlando Regional Realtor Association and will fund a new greenhouse, shed and irrigation system. In addition, some of the money will go toward replacing wooden partitions with paving stones. “We have an obligation to maintain and improve the quality of life for our fellow neighbors throughout Central Florida. The Parramore Community Garden helps to provide healthy options to people struggling with food insecurity,” ORRA executive director Candy Cole said in a statement. — Alex Galbraith
An Orlando-area tree frog named Betty might be television’s next Cadbury Bunny If your weird uncle spent the last few weeks ranting about potato genitalia, you might want to shield them from this story: An Orlando-area frog might be the face of Cadbury this Easter. Betty the Australian Tree Frog is a top 10 finalist to be this year’s Cadbury Bunny. Cadbury’s annual contest asks pet owners to submit their furry (or slimy) friends for a chance to star in a commercial for creme eggs. The tree frog owned by University of Central Florida student Kaitlyn Vidal has made it to the final round of voting, and it’s no surprise as to why. Betty cuts quite a figure in her top hat with attached bunny ears. “Betty knows what it’s like to be different and she’d love to get the chance to show everyone that our differences are what make us who we are and they are something to be proud of,” Vidal said in her contest submission video, as Betty hopped around a basket of pastel eggs. Vidal told local newscaster Fox 35 that she entered the contest for the same reason a college student does anything: They needed the money. “I was just accepted to UCF’s graduate school for speech-language pathology, so I am currently applying for scholarships and that’s why I decided to enter this competition,” Vidal said. “Anything to help pay off student debt!” — AG

In a week of bad arguments and risible remarks from awful men, one stands above the rest BY JEFFREY C. BIL L M A N

gations of sexual assault or harassment — not to mention an ongoing investigation into his cover-up of nursing home COVID deaths — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told reporters that congressional and legislative Democrats’ calls for him to resign were part of (wait for it) “cancel culture.” Then he added, with a straight face, that “part of this is that I’m not part of the political club. And you know what? I’m proud of it.” Cuomo is a three-term governor of America’s fourthlargest state, and the son of a three-term governor. If he’s not part of the political club, the club does not exist. Surely, I thought, this was the whiniest, most risibly stupid thing a politician has said since Donald Trump retreated to Mar-a-Lago. As it turns out, it wasn’t even the whiniest, most risibly stupid thing a politician had said in the previous 48 hours. That morning, Sen. Marco Rubio published an op-ed in USA Today aligning with unionizing Amazon workers in Alabama. Not because he likes unions, but because he thinks Amazon is woke. “For the past several years,” Rubio began, “Amazon has waged a war against working-class values. The Silicon Valley titan uses anticompetitive strategies to crush small businesses, bans conservative books, and blocks traditional charities from participating in its AmazonSmile program.” (To translate from charlatan-speak: Amazon has refused to sell books from anti-LGBTQ quacks and provide fundraising platforms for hate groups, and reading books by anti-LGBTQ quacks and raising money for hate groups are working-class values.) Rubio continued: “Republicans have rightly understood the dangers posed by the unchecked influence of labor unions. … But the days of conservatives being taken for granted by the business community are over. Here’s my standard: When the conflict is between working Americans and a company whose leadership has decided to wage [a] culture war against working-class values, the choice is easy — I support the workers.” (Again, translating from charlatan: Unions are bad, except when companies won’t host right-wing social media platforms whose users are openly plotting to kill and rape politicians.) As vapid as he is, Rubio had competition from two Senate colleagues. The first was Sen. Thom Tillis, who, in opposing the For the People Act’s requirement that dark money groups disclose their donors, coughed up this gem of critical thinking: “[Democrats] simply found another way to do exactly the same thing — people providing money to candidates and influencing elections. They’ve just come up
with a more sophisticated, broad-based policy that I doubt very seriously that they’d be willing to abandon.” Tillis was equating ActBlue, which collects small-dollar donations on behalf of Democratic candidates, to the super PACs that spent millions on his behalf last year. The difference: ActBlue reports its donations to the FEC. Dark money groups do not. Then there’s Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who’s spent the last few months spreading conspiracy theories about election fraud and the Jan. 6 Capitol riots being the work of antifa. RonAnon told a radio interviewer that he wasn’t worried during the insurrection because “I knew those were people that loved this country, that truly respect law enforcement, would never do anything to break a law, and so I wasn’t concerned.” (They killed a cop.) “Had the tables been turned and President Trump won the election and those were tens of thousands of Black Lives Matter and antifa protesters,” Johnson added, “I might have been a little concerned.” Switching from gross racism to gross pleas for attention: The day after President Biden’s primetime address, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis tried to position himself as Biden’s antagonist. “You know I was watching this speech last night about saying, ‘Oh, well, we may have to impose lockdown restrictions again.’ Biden said that. Let me just tell you, there’s no lockdowns in Florida, OK. We’re not going to let anyone close schools, we’re not going to let anyone take your jobs, we’re not going to let anyone close your businesses.” Except Biden didn’t say that. What he said was, “Unity is what we do together as fellow Americans, because if we don’t stay vigilant and the conditions change, then we may have to reinstate restrictions to get back on track. And
please, we don’t want to do that again.” In other words, Ron, if we behave recklessly to score cheap political points — like, say, waiving local governments’ fines for violating COVID restrictions, thus signaling that all rules are off, even as communities of color are unable to access vaccines that all seem to end up in your supporters’ arms — things could get very bad again, and we’d have to respond accordingly. In the meantime, stop punching straw men. But even this wasn’t the most asinine comment of the week. That prize goes to Arizona state Rep. John Kavanagh, who did us all a favor by saying the quiet part out loud. Last week Kavanagh, the chairman of the Government and Elections Committee, defended his party’s attacks on voting rights as follows: “There’s a fundamental difference between Democrats and Republicans. Democrats value as many people as possible voting, and they’re willing to risk fraud. Republicans are more concerned about fraud, so we don’t mind putting security measures in that won’t let everybody vote — but everybody shouldn’t be voting.” He said this after acknowledging that the evidence for election fraud was “anecdotal.” Then again, as Kavanagh made clear, that’s not the point. “Quantity is important,” he said, “but we have to look at the quality of votes, as well.” Which is to say, it’s more important to fix a nonexistent problem than to encourage “inferior” people to vote. In a week full of bad arguments from awful men, Kavanagh’s was the worst — though he’s not exactly on the fringe. Across the country, Republicans have introduced more than 250 bills that restrict voting, all rooted in the belief that not everyone deserves to vote … because some votes are of lesser quality.

NEWS NEW ‘AT RISK AND FORGOTTEN’ Disabled Floridians are being left behind in the rush to get the vaccine. Plus: GOP pushes questionable ballot laws, DeSantis revamps clemency BY DARA KA M, N SF
O
ne year. That’s how long it’s been since the onset of “the new normal,” when the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Since then, the coronavirus has caused the deaths of more than 2 million people around the world, including more than 32,000 Floridians. The rapid development and distribution of life-saving vaccines, however, is allowing millions of people to ease into a different sense of normality, at least for those fortunate enough to be able to get shots. For nearly three months, Gov. Ron DeSantis has focused on a “seniors-first” policy, pointing to data showing coronavirus morbidity rates are highest among people who are age 65 and older. And while vaccinations are gradually becoming available for other groups, the process to sign up for shots or to wait in line to receive them may be difficult or impossible for some people to navigate. Lawyers, professors and other advocates last week asked DeSantis and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is operating some vaccination sites in Florida, to ensure that people with disabilities gain access to the inoculations. Currently, “there are no procedures for persons with disabilities to ask for assistance or accommodation for any part of the vaccination process,” the advocates wrote in an open letter. “There is an uncontroversial ethical, moral and legal obligation to ensure that people with disabilities be immunized as a priority,” the letter said. The group asked DeSantis to provide options other than physicians’ attestations for people to show they qualify for immunizations. They also want a published list of types of conditions that would entitle people to be considered extremely vulnerable to COVID-19 and, as a result, eligible for shots. Among other things, the advocates are asking that people be provided a method to request accommodations and be given a “fast-pass method” if they are unable to stand or wait for long periods of time. Also on the list of requests: transportation to vaccination sites and in-home inoculations for those who are unable to travel or are severely immunocompromised. Matthew Dietz, litigation director for Disability Independence Group, fought to get in-home testing for disabled Floridians but was unable to get similar accommodations for shots, he said in an email. “These folks are the most at risk and forgotten,” Dietz, who was one of the advocates who sent the letter, added.
DeSantis has sent “strike teams” to vaccinate certain homebound seniors. Last week, the governor tweeted that the state had launched a new way for homebound seniors to request a shot via email.

The coronavirus caused a major increase in the number of Floridians who voted by mail in November, a process state Republicans have championed for years as they gained control of the House, Senate and governor’s mansion. But while Florida’s elections ran smoothly last year, GOP lawmakers are pushing ahead with a wide-ranging
“There are a few good measures, but on balance, we are against this bill vehemently.” — Leon County Supervisor of Elections Mark Earley, referring to SB 90, a proposal that would revamp Florida’s vote-by-mail laws. proposal to revamp vote-by-mail laws, including banning the use of drop boxes and taking aim at a practice known as “ballot harvesting.” The bill, SB 90, comes amid efforts in various parts of the country by Republicans to place new restrictions on voting by mail, after former President Donald Trump attacked the process during his unsuccessful re-election campaign last year. It also comes after Florida Democrats used vote-bymail ballots heavily in November. Senate bill sponsor Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, said the proposed vote-by-mail changes are designed to ensure the security of future elections. “I am all about staying ahead of whatever problems could develop,” Baxley said before the GOP-controlled Senate Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee voted 4-2 along party lines to approve the bill last Wednesday. “So, it’s not that there was a debacle and
we have to fix it. Do we have to wait for a debacle? Why can’t we take something that is working well and put guardrails on it and keep it safe?” But Democrats and county elections supervisors opposed the bill, expressing concerns about issues such as the proposed ban on drop boxes, which many voters used in 2020 instead of placing ballots in the mail. Leon County Supervisor of Elections Mark Earley, who is the vice president of a statewide supervisors association, said the bill could create a return to past problems of long lines and confusion at polling places. “I have heard of no supervisors who are in support of this bill,” Earley said.

For the past decade, felons in Florida have had to wait at least five years after being released from prison before becoming eligible to have their civil rights restored. But last week DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet, acting as the Board of Executive Clemency, did away with the waiting periods, opening the door for so-called “returning citizens” to have their rights restored and possibly wiping out a backlog of thousands of other cases awaiting review. The revamped clemency rules also establish an expedited process for felons who have paid all of the legal financial obligations related to their crimes. That “automatic process” is “going to streamline everything,” Attorney General Ashley Moody said. “I think this is going to be a huge advancement toward reducing that backlog,” she added. “I think this is a great first step, and I think our numbers will ultimately show that.” The plan adopted by the board — made up of DeSantis, Moody, Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried and Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis — will “automatically” restore civil rights to felons who have paid all courtordered fines, fees and restitution related to their crimes. They will have to apply to begin the process of rights restoration, but they will not be required to go before the Board of Executive Clemency to have their cases considered. Under the new rules, indigent felons with outstanding legal financial obligations will be able to apply to have their civil rights — the right to vote, serve on a jury and run for public office — restored but will have to go before the clemency board, which has the authority to waive courtordered fees and fines. DeSantis said he proposed the changes in part to address a 2018 constitutional amendment, known as Amendment 4, that was designed to restore voting rights to felons who have completed their sentences. Republican lawmakers in 2019 passed a measure, signed by the Republican governor, that requires felons to pay “legal financial obligations” associated with their crimes to be eligible to have their voting rights restored under the constitutional amendment. The changes approved last week “unfortunately, meets only the bare bones of Amendment 4,” said Fried, who is eying a run against DeSantis next year. “What about the vast majority who can’t afford the fines, fees, court costs and money that is owed to the government?” she asked.

mugged me last weekend, and I ain’t even mad about it. The year was 1994, and I was among a handful of undergrads at the art cinema in Colonial Williamsburg attending the late-night screening of an ultra-low-budget indie film that had garnered buzz on Usenet groups (the primitive precursor to today’s internet forums) after being picked up at Sundance by Harvey Weinstein (back when that was considered a positive thing). The grainy black-and-white visuals were nothing to write home about, but I was instantly captivated by the raw performances and lewd yet literate dialogue; the fact that it was set in a New Jersey suburb similar to my own home turf didn’t hurt. Ever since that first screening of Clerks, I’ve been all-in on the career of writer/ director/actor/merchandiser Kevin Smith, seeing every one of his View Askewniverse flicks in a first-run theater (except for the recent Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, which is streaming on Amazon). I was there in 2002 when he headlined MegaCon; his “hetero lifemate” Jason Mewes was absent from the appearance, so Smith filled the twohour slot solo by telling the extended story of his notorious Superman Lives script. I was there again in 2013 when his roadshow tour of Jay & Silent Bob’s Super-Groovy Cartoon Movie played to a packed house at the Plaza Live. And I’ve spent countless dollars on his DVDs and comic books in the intervening decades, even making a pilgrimage to his recently relocated Secret Stash store in Red Bank. His haters glibly jab Kevin Smith for repeatedly recycling and reselling his juvenile obsessions to guileless fans; if so, he’s simply following in the footsteps of fellow franchise-founding auteurs like George Lucas, Gene Roddenberry and Stan Lee, who launched his lauded cameo career in Smith’s Mallrats. And beyond birthing

Gen X’s answer to Cheech & Chong, Smith is also by all accounts a mensch who has remained loyal to his lifelong friends — from A-listers like Ben Affleck on down — throughout their public travails, while maintaining an unusually drama-free home life by Hollywood standards. So when I heard that a pop-up version of Mooby’s, the spoof fast-food chain featured in Dogma and Clerks II, would be setting up temporary digs inside a portion of Tin Roof Orlando at Icon Park, my first response was “take my money, yet again.” After signing up for early dibs on the limited tickets, I was initially taken aback by the pricing: $29 per person for admission and a “moo main” entree sandwich with “salt licker” side didn’t sound unreasonable, but after adding one alcoholic beverage, a soda and a collectible cardboard box, ticketing and order fees brought the total bill for two with tip to a cow-choking $109. In fact, my final receipt was so absurdly steep, I like to think of it as Smith’s Banksy-esque satire on runaway capitalism. My complaints about the cost obviously didn’t prevent me from punching in my credit card numbers, and apparently I wasn’t alone — the reservation-only event sold well enough to extend four extra days through March 25. In fact, not even the terrifying traffic around the I-Drive complex’s parking garage (where I nearly died upon entry and exit), nor the socially un-distanced spring break crowd crawling across its grounds, could keep me from my Saturday evening appointment with the Golden Calf. Luckily, the meal turned out to be far bet-
ter than I always imagined Mooby’s food would taste. My Cock Smoker fried chicken sandwich was far larger and thicker than anything from Chick-fil-a; the Beyondbased Cow Tipper was among the tastiest vegan cheeseburgers I’ve tasted; and the onion rings and “hater totz” were better than average. Best of all, the venue was decorated inside and out with selfie-ready icons from Smith’s films, from reproductions of the original “I ASSURE YOU WE’RE OPEN” banner and inflatable versions of Bluntman and Chronic to “Employee of the Month” signs referencing obscure secondary characters. Social media reported that Smith himself appeared at the Orlando pop-up prior to my arrival, as did Brian “Dante Hicks” O’Halloran (who wasn’t “even supposed to be here today”), but no celebs showed up during my time slot. After about an hour of listening to the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back soundtrack (which still kicks some ass) while soaking up the atmosphere and grease with fellow View Askew aficionados, I headed home happy and broke with a couple new pieces of autographed memorabilia and an urge to rewatch Chasing Amy for the 100th time. Call me a sucker, call me a shill; my souvenir Mooby’s mason jar (actually a cheap plastic cup with a peeling sticker) now sits proudly on my shelf, and the next time Smith shows up in Central Florida I’ll undoubtedly shell out to see him. Maybe then I’ll finally get the chance to give him a piece of my mind about substituting footage from Universal Hollywood’s Studio Tour for Orlando’s Jaws ride in the Mallrats finale. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

I
’ve got a soft spot for restaurants that opened mid-pandemic, particularly those run by Asian Americans — who, as we all know, have been the target of racist hate, thanks in no small part to the garbage spewed by the former man-baby in chief. Mei’s Kitchen, a Taiwanese restaurant in East Orlando, opened in the not-so-merry month of May to very little fanfare, but those who visited for takeout, or ate inside the dining room when it opened back up to the public, knew they had stumbled onto a true find. That dining room, by the way, underwent a thorough de-Orientalizing from its former days as Pu Yi Chinese restaurant. It now possesses the characteristic characterless modernity of today’s average restaurant, but the dishes are classics through and through. And through the pass-through window, I threw a glance at chef-owner Mei Feng Wang patrolling her spacious kitchen, readying a lunch order as I placed mine at the counter. The friendly lass behind the register suggested the salt and pepper chicken ($5.95, pictured above) and gua bao ($2.95), two recs that un-crouched the tiger in my stomach. I took a seat, sipped some milk tea and took note of how the tables were clearly and prudently tagged to main-
tain a safely separated dining experience. The fact I was the only person in the place was sheer coincidence, and not a result of overzealous policing. If anyone did walk in, I sure as hell didn’t notice — all my senses were focused on that poppin’ chicken. The marinated nuggets are tossed in a salty five-spice batter, coated with potato starch, then fried twice for an unparalleled crisp. There’s an additional dusting of five-spice and a garnish of fried basil to make them even more habit-forming. But Taiwan’s most famous export (after Momofuku Ando) has to be gua bao, the pork belly bun that’s taken Planet Earth by storm. It’s presented here in traditional form — a thick cut of tender braised belly layered into a doughy white envelope with pickled mustard greens, cilantro and a sugary peanut powder. Both dishes served as worthy preludes to an equally worthy bowl of beef noodle soup ($11.95), Taiwan’s official national dish (even if most of the world doesn’t recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation). The broth,

light yet beefy, contains a simple assemblage of noods, bok choy and cuts of braised beef shank. Now, this is by no means a complaint, but wow, there’s a lot of beef in this soup — like four or five thick slabs of shank. I couldn’t bring myself to finish them all but, then again, I was already stuffed to the hilt. There were, however, dishes enjoyed during dinner: mapo tofu ($9.95), not near the level of the versions served at Taste of Chengdu or Chuan Lu, but serviceable nonetheless; and a crisp and hefty fried pork chop ($10.95) offered as a “bento box” with rice, hard-boiled egg, egg roll, cabbage and egg drop soup. A layer of ground meat (pork, I think) sandwiched between chop and rice really made for a protein-packed meal. And I couldn’t pass on the baozi ($2.95), the large, pillowy alabaster bun resembling Astro Boy’s curlicued noggin. Mei’s version took me back to the days when my friend Brian and I would down the steamed porkand-scallion orbs at his house after school. Brian left us way too early, so there’s always a tinge of melancholy in eating them. Honestly, I thought twice about ordering the bun, but then I thought Brian would’ve wanted me to. But few films take a subjective look at the topic, putting describing her struggle with Alzheimer’s. “The waves erase the audience dizzyingly inside the mind of the character. The Father isn’t necessarily the first to do it, but it might be the marks we leave behind, all the sandcastles.” In The Father, it’s an octogenarian named Anthony the best. Indeed, Zeller’s film dives so deeply into Anthony that whose sandcastles are getting washed away. The character shares the name and birthdate of the actor portraying him it’s often the other characters (performed wonderfully by Olivia Colman, Rufus Sewell, Imogen (Anthony Hopkins), but the film is not Poots, Mark Gatiss and Olivia Williams) biographical. THE FATHER who seem crazy. Instead, writer-director Florian Zeller Surely Anthony is lucid and it’s the based the drama on his 2012 Molière opening at Enzian Theater world around him that is collapsing into Award-winning play, Le Père, which tells Friday, March 19 lunacy, we posit. And yet just as we think the simple story of an elderly man whose we’ve solved Zeller’s brainteaser, another mental faculties are deteriorating and twist arises, throwing us — along with who must face difficult decisions related Anthony — into an Escher-like existence to his long-term care. Nevertheless, in the hands of Hopkins, the protagonist feels starkly real, as if of confusion and implausibility. It amounts to a jigsaw puzzle that, when solved, reveals you’re witnessing one of the cinema’s greatest actors careen the best film of 2020. into dementia.

Credit must be shared with co-writer Christopher Hampton, composer Ludovico Einaudi, cinematographer Ben Smithard, editor Yorgos Lamprinos and especially production designer Peter Francis, who — along with art directors Amanda Dazely and Astrid Sieben — create an environment just as surreal as any found in Inception or Doctor Strange. Anthony’s world might not have the visual punch of the aforementioned films, but it ranks right up there with The Tenant and Rosemary’s Baby on the creepyapartment scale. This won’t be Hopkins’ last film; the 83-year-old isn’t even slowing down. But The Father, even more so than 2019’s The Two Popes, feels like a career capstone. I just hope he can collect another Oscar to go with his award for The Silence of the Lambs. But, just as his superior performance in The Remains of the Day lost to Tom Hanks’ zeitgeist-capturing turn in Philadelphia in 1994, the Academy might pass over his role in The Father to instead posthumously honor Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, as did the Hollywood Foreign Press. Awards shows are, after all, more focused on sending political and cultural messages than recognizing artistic achievement. And that’s not always bad, as Hanks’ and Boseman’s performances were — and still are — socially compulsory. But a performance of the stature of Hopkins’ in The Father doesn’t come along often. Let’s cherish it while we can.

Return to those halcyon times in a probing documentary that uses dramatic re-creations to put us inside the corridors of power where an unearned education is procured. Matthew Modine is the top-billed star, and with good reason: I hear his Huffman impression is the shizz. (Netflix)
PREMIERES THURSDAY: Get the Goat — Brazilian-made comedy with two cops on a mission to retrieve a goat that just happens to be a highly revered mascot. Seems to me this territory was already covered rather comprehensively by Greg Brady, but I guess his appeal was always a little too ethnic for the mainstream. (Netflix) Koko-Di, Koko-Da — From Sweden comes a horror comedy in which a married couple are terrorized by fantasy characters that spring from their dead daughter’s music box. Should have just bought her a pony like she wanted, Björn and Frida! (Shudder) Nate Bargatze: The Greatest Average American — The Tennessee-born comic and podcaster uses his second stand-up special to paint a picture of what it’s like to be a dad and work at Applebee’s. Not at the same time, you understand, because Bernie Sanders doesn’t have that “paid leave” business ironed out just yet. (Netflix) Slaxx — High concept becomes drip-dry concept, as a possessed pair of pants seeks vengeance against the shady company that manufactured it. Go ahead and read that again if you need to. Then make your chinos sleep on the patio tonight, just in case. (Shudder)
Zack Snyder’s Justice League — The four-hour restoration of Snyder’s vision for 2017’s lambasted Justice League promises all the slo-mo action, hackneyed music cues and CliffsNotes Christ symbolism you’ve come to expect. I also predict it’ll be more tonally consistent crap than the version Joss Whedon “finished,” but lacking in the warm and human details Whedon brought to the table. Like what, you ask? Well, the embattled Russian family, for one. And “thirsty” Lois Lane. And … all right, point taken. Cue up the Leonard Cohen and let’s see what happens. (HBO Max)

Hey, it doesn’t take much to get us geeks excited. But I’m still gonna tell my kids this was The Falcon and the Snowman. (Disney+) Formula 1: Drive to Survive — Season 3 of the high-octane reality series intends to show how the pandemic affected the sport of racing worldwide. “It’s weird, people look at that in weird ways,” said Will Walker during a conversation with Orlando Weekly last week. “Since we’ve been upfront about how we weren’t exactly healthy this past year, I could see people being like, ‘Oh, well that’s it.’” And yet, it’s definitely not “it” for the Mills Avenue institution. “Our position is — we’re not going anywhere, don’t sweat that,” says Walker. The previous owner of the property, Robert Cascio, put it up for sale and the land was snapped up forthwith, as any and all Mills 50 real estate is a hot commodity these days. “I found out that the sale was finalized when the Sentinel called me,” says Walker with a perfect note of dry humor. The new property owner, Kevin Reynolds, appears to be a believer in the work Walker and company are doing at Will’s — indeed, this new landlord even took in his first concert there. Reynolds paid $870,000 for the Will’s site and lauded Walker as doing “a phenomenal job being an operator of the space” to the Sentinel. “He’s been to shows at Will’s. He’s a younger guy … and he doesn’t seem to be a developer, more of a property investor,” says Walker of Reynolds. “So, out of all the possible scenarios, this was one of the better ones.” When Orlando Weekly spoke to Walker, he seemed in relatively good spirits given the extremely turbulent year — almost to the day — that he and his establishment and staff have weathered during what should have been a boffo 25th anniversary year. Instead, it was a year of financial emergencies and pivots and adaptations to the ongoing challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. Will’s Pub continually reinvented itself as the pandemic dragged on and on. Bottled cocktails, package sales and merch kept the bar scraping by on the thinnest of margins for a time, as the inside and outside of the building was drastically reimagined to keep social distancing and safety considerations front and center. Gradually, live shows, smaller seated DJ nights and sundry other activities came back, always run in a conscientious fashion. Plans for a restaurant started and then stopped, as the Dirty Laundry laundromat area was sold as well. It was a year of big frustrations, tiny triumphs and a wealth of creativity born of necessity. “We’ve had so many pivots this past year that it’s really hard to keep track of what the hell we’re doing. ‘Now we’re a restaurant, surprise!’” says Walker. “I’m actually curious to see what we look like on the other side of all this. Depending on where you heard
about the recent development involving Orlando cornerstone venue Will’s Pub, you were either freaked out by the Orlando Sentinel’s misleading headline (“Will’s Pub lives on with new owner of Orlando landmark bar”) or soberly notified by our more compendious one (“Mills 50 mainstay Will’s Pub property sold to new owner, but Will’s the venue and bar is ‘not going anywhere’”). But the business owner and the landowner sat down last weekend to discuss the property’s future in more detail. After they did, I reached out to both. When asked if he felt more confident after their tête-à-tête, venue proprietor Will Walker said, “Yes, very.” And new landlord Kevin Reynolds tells me, “My plan is to let Will do exactly what he’s been doing for so many years. It is simply a change of building ownership.” There you have it. Besides, with about a decade left on the lease, the much more immediate concern for Will’s Pub is surviving this crippling pandemic. So let’s focus on that if you want to help them stick around.
LOCAL RELEASES Eminent local electronic music label Circuit Church recently unveiled the debut of Ethereal_Interface, the audiovisual collaboration between Orlando’s Modal Plane and Chicago’s Sara Goodman. Dream_Logs is 15 tracks of ambient downbeat music that, though abstract, is done with structure, motion and intelligibility. It’s available digitally on Circuit Church’s Bandcamp, but for the full multimedia experience, it’s also available on both cassette and VHS. Less-than-prolific Orlando band Copper Bones produce so little output that any release by the quality two-piece

rock duo is newsworthy. The recent “Bottomfeeder,” available on Bandcamp, is their first record since their 2016 debut album, Exhibit A. Though just a morsel of a single, “Bottomfeeder” is a hard-rock crusher that’s three and a half solid minutes of beef and crunch. Orlando producer Blair Sound Design just dropped a two-track release of elegantly minimal house music — “Wishing You Well” b/w “Dare 2 Love” — on local dance label French Press Lounge. The tuneful and immaculate A-side, “Wishing You Well,” in particular, is a model of taste, groove and essence. It’s available on French Press Lounge’s Bandcamp.
CONCERT PICKS THIS WEEK If you go out, respect everyone’s distance, for all our sakes. The States: I first encountered this young Ocala band at Mike Dunn’s Folk Yeah festival in 2019. Of the young crop represented that year, the States were among the cream with their huge melodic horizon and increasingly modern bridge of indie rock and folk. They headline a local showcase presented by Montgomery Drive, also
featuring Manakins and Tyler Bird performing among the classic car collection at Ivanhoe Village’s M Bar. Masks required at this limited capacity show. (8 p.m. Friday, March 19, M Bar, $10) Soundwalk: Although not music per se, this will indeed be an intentionally auditory experience guided by accomplished artist Lady Eve. Presented by Timucua and the Atlantic Center for the Arts, it’s a roving journey into ambience that will reconnect you with the aural collage surrounding us that urbanites rarely observe, much less absorb. Once you get on the wavelength, you’ll probably find that din to be surprisingly layered, alive and revealing. Considering the natural and urban mix at the Loch Haven site of this Soundwalk, the results should be dynamic and organically orchestral. Even if it only ends up being a quiet walk outdoors for you, it’s just what the therapist ordered in this maddeningly loud age. Notably fronted by true country believer Tom Cooper of the Oak Hill Drifters, Pinto Psychs are a new local trio whose sound rolls like interstate tumbleweed, at once channeling rock, country and Western. “THE PHONE JOB” A male friend — not my best friend but a close one — told me his wife was really attracted to me (also male) and asked if I was attracted to her. His wife is an incredibly hot woman and I thought it was a trick question. I read your column and listen to the Savage Lovecast, Dan, so I know there are guys out there who want other men to sleep with their wives, of course, but I didn’t want to risk offending this friend by saying “FUCK YEAH” too quickly. After he convinced me it wasn’t a trick, I told him that of course I wanted to have sex with his wife. She’s incredibly beautiful and a really great person. Your friend and his wife might be willing to revise these conditions just for you, so it couldn’t hurt to ask. But if he says no, you don’t get to fuck his wife anymore. Or if he says no and his wife keeps fucking you, well then, she’d be cheating on him for real and not “cheating” on him for fun. You’ll still get to fuck his wife, he’ll still get to hear about it from you, and you won’t have to listen to him doing what you damn well knew he’d be doing after you fucked his wife, i.e. furiously beating off about you. I’m a 20-something hetero woman living in the South. I’m having trouble with my boyfriend of almost three years. We are very happy together, but our sex life is lackluster. The obvious answer is obvious: If having sex at the same time and in the same place is ruining the intense and satisfying sex you’re having, BANAL, maybe don’t always have sex at the same time or in the same place? And since you’re the initiator and that’s unlikely to change — turning a cheater into a faithful partner is easier than turning a non-initiator into an initiator — that means you’re in charge of the when and the where. You’ve already compromised on having sex twice a week, which is your low-end preference and double his preference (so you got the better end of that deal), and now all you gotta do is initiate sex on different days, at different times, and in different places. Easy-peasy. Now for the non-obvious answer, BANAL: You need to listen to what your boyfriend is telling you. Monogamy is difficult for everyone, not just your boyfriend, but some people find it more difficult than others. And asking someone who finds monogamy extremely difficult to make a monogamous commitment … yeah, that’s not a great plan. This isn’t entirely on you; someone whose libido tanks when they’re in a monogamous relationship and/or someone who’s way more interested in sex when they’re free to sleep around shouldn’t be making monogamous commitments. Monogamy might not be right for your boyfriend at the moment, BANAL, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be right for him ever. Just like sex you have to schedule might not be right for you now, while in your mid-20s, but that doesn’t mean scheduled/routine/maintenance sex won’t be right for you ever.
