It’s time to pay less for college.

¶ Point/counterpoint: Is tort reform necessary to prevent frivolous lawsuits, or a way for corporations to escape liability for harming American citizens? Dear Editor: Hispanic-run businesses are the backbone of Florida’s economy. They make up over 30 percent of the state’s small business sector, with well over 780,000 businesses providing muchneeded goods, jobs, and services to their communities. Ask any official, and they’ll tell you how vital Hispanic businesses are to the constituents in their districts. But while politicians are always happy to talk about supporting them, far fewer back those words up with action. The issue of the “tort tax” — the cost of frivolous lawsuit abuse on citizens and businesses — has increasingly held back our community’s chance at growth, and the time for action is now. Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) recently released a study showing that the tort tax increased in Florida to over $800 per person over the last year, one of the highest in the country. The tax has increased by nearly $100 since 2019, the same year the Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (FSHCC) was fighting for reform but came up short. Unlike most states, Florida worked hard during the pandemic to keep businesses open while maintaining common-sense health and safety guidelines. But in the absence of meaningful tort reform, many struggling shops and service centers are still under threat from crushing litigation. Florida still has a long way to go to right its economy, and the last thing our state needs is more bankruptcies, fewer employers, and more supply chain issues. That’s precisely what will happen should lawmakers in Tallahassee abandon those they promised to represent during the last round of elections. We won’t forget the next time you come to our businesses for a photo op or ask our community leaders for a ringing endorsement. We especially won’t forget at the ballot box in November. Lawmakers like State Senator Randolph Bracy and State Representative Joy GoffMarcil have the power to end this hardship for everyone. Now it’s time to see if they have the willpower to do so. — Clarimar Berrios, Orlando Editor’s note: Ms. Berrios is an Orlando notary public and the wife of Gary Berrios, a member of Sen. Rick Scott’s staff. Since 1991, “tort reform” advocates have set up dozens of tax-exempt groups in at least 18 states (currently there are 26 active groups) with consumer-friendly names like Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, Stop Lawsuit Abuse, Lawsuit Abuse Watch, and People for a FAIR Legal System. These groups are known as “CALAs.” While CALAs represent themselves as grassroots citizens groups, and they say they are sustained by small donations from ordinary citizens, they actually represent major corporations and industries seeking to escape liability for the harm they cause

consumers. The money trail from these groups leads directly to large corporate donors, including tobacco, insurance, oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical companies, medical associations, and auto manufacturers. They are also funded by the American Tort Reform Association (ATRA), as well as professional associations, local businesses and industries that also wish to be shielded from consumer lawsuits. The tobacco industry has spent millions of dollars a year (and in at least one year $15 million) supporting ATRA, state CALAs, and other activities to weaken tort laws in many states. Tobacco money has gone directly to ATRA, APCO, and state organizations. It has also been indirectly funneled to the cause through law firms, trade associations and lobbyists. The CALAs’ strategy and message has been coordinated by ATRA and its public relations consultant APCO Associates, which supply the groups with strategic guidance, media training, and pre-produced radio, television, print advertising and billboards designed for maximum media exposure and legislative impact. Other regional and national political consultants and polling firms has helped tailor the CALA message to local concerns. Although CALAs are tax-exempt nonprofit organizations prohibited from endorsing candidates or contributing to campaigns, they try to exercise considerable electoral influence, often in coordination with local business associations and Political Action Committees. One focus since the mid1990s has been to ensure the election of pro-industry state judges and the defeat of judges who typically support plaintiffs’ verdicts or have voted to strike down state tort law restrictions as unconstitutional. The CALA message is a sly deception designed to appeal broadly to patriotic, hard-working Americans, many of whom will ultimately serve on juries. At its core, the message equates the efforts of injured consumers to recover damages from those responsible with “lawsuit abuse.” Unfortunately, many jurors around the country have been influenced by this erroneous message due to the marketing campaign of ATRA, APCO and the CALAs, and as a result, statistics reflect juries’ increasingly antagonistic attitude toward injured plaintiffs. — The Center for Justice & Democracy at New York Law School Editor’s note: The Center for Justice & Democracy is a consumer rights organization dedicated to educating the public about the U.S. civil justice system, founded by former Ralph Nader staff attorney Joanne Doroshow and other consumer advocates. Lawsuit asks federal court to set Florida’s congressional district map

Well, here we go: With Gov. Ron DeSantis vowing to veto a congressional redistricting plan, a lawsuit filed late Friday asks a federal court to set new U.S. House districts that would be used in this fall’s elections. The crux of the lawsuit is that DeSantis’ threat to veto a redistricting plan drawn up by state lawmakers jeopardizes the chances of reaching agreement on a map and that judges should step in. “Unlike the Legislature, Governor DeSantis has demonstrated that he is not willing to abide by the law, or sign a congressional plan that does, making an impasse highly likely,” said the federal lawsuit, filed in the federal Northern District of Florida. This lawsuit is the latest twist in the once-a-decade reapportionment process after DeSantis in January proposed a congressional plan that differed significantly from maps being considered by the Republican-controlled Senate and House. DeSantis wants a map that likely would be more favorable to Republicans. But critics argue that changes sought by DeSantis would be unconstitutional, at least in part because they could lead to fewer minorities getting elected.

Bill opening school library books, curriculum up to public scrutiny heads to DeSantis

After it passed the Florida Senate earlier on the same day, the Florida House last week passed a school-board term limits bill (HB 1467) that includes a controversial provision to intensify scrutiny of schoolbooks. In a 79-41 vote nearly along party lines, Rep. Andrew Learned, D-Brandon, was the only Dem to vote with Republicans for the proposal. A part of the bill that has generated significantly more controversy than the term limits aims to give parents and members of the public increased access to the process of selecting and removing school library books and instructional materials. For instance, committees that meet for the purpose of making recommendations to school boards on the “ranking, eliminating, or selecting” of instructional materials would be required to include parents of students in a school district.

Florida legislature passes measure to create office of ‘election cops’

In the latest battle over Florida’s elections system, lawmakers gave final approval Wednesday to a bill that would make a series of changes, including creating a state office to investigate voting irregularities. The bill is ready to go to DeSantis, who has called for such changes. Fueled by former President Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 election, Republicans across the country have sought to revamp election laws to address what they contend is fraud. The debate last Wednesday echoed arguments that have raged for more than a year, with Republicans saying elections need to be as secure as possible and Democrats contending that the changes are aimed at making it harder to vote. In part, the bill would require the governor, working with the commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, to appoint special officers to investigate allegations of election violations, with at least one officer in each region of the state. Another part of the bill would require county supervisors of elections to annually scour voter rolls for potentially ineligible voters in a process known as “list maintenance.” Under current law, supervisors are required to do list maintenance every other year.

Bill barring instruction on race-related issues passes Senate, heads to guv

The Florida Senate on Thursday passed a bill that would restrict how race-related issues can be taught in public schools and in workplace training sessions, giving final legislative approval to DeSantis’ fight against critical race theory. An emotionally raw debate that played out over two days in the Senate centered on whether the bill lives up to the “Individual Freedom” title given to it by its sponsors or whether it seeks to obscure the uglier parts of American history and stifle the speech of teachers and businesses. Under the measure, school instruction would constitute discrimination if it “compels” students to believe certain concepts that are spelled out in the bill. For example, instruction would be labeled discriminatory if it led a person to believe that they bear “responsibility for, or should be discriminated against or receive adverse treatment because of, actions committed in the past” by people of the same race or sex. The measure also takes aim at instruction that would cause students to feel “guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress” because of past actions by members of the same race, sex or national origin. THE FUGITIVE UTERUS ACT Republicans are trying to use the Supreme Court to privilege their beliefs over others’ human rights BY JE F FREY C. BILLMA N

he moment the U.S. Supreme Court’s right-wing bloc washed its hands of the Texas law that made private citizens abortion bounty hunters, it was only a matter of time until other Republican states tried to one-up them. Missouri has proudly taken the lead. Last week, its legislature debated a bill that would ban all abortion — not just those more than six weeks after conception, as in Texas — through the same “private enforcement” scheme. But there’s another twist. While most women who were denied abortions because of Texas’ law ordered abortion pills or went to a neighboring state, Missouri’s bill would allow bounty hunters to sue anyone who helps a Missouri resident obtain an abortion anywhere. As constitutional law scholar Michele Goodwin told Mother Jones, Texas’ law — and now Missouri’s effort — recalls the Fugitive Slave Act passed in the Compromise of 1850, which required everyone to help capture escaped enslaved people. This anti-abortion campaign is “meant to chill conduct” and “inspire fear.” Missouri’s law is, of course, blatantly unconstitutional. And not merely for the reasons Texas’ law is — or should be — unconstitutional. It’s also that Missouri has no authority to regulate what transpires outside of its territorial boundaries. The notion that someone (not necessarily a Missouri resident) can sue an internet service provider for hosting a website in Illinois or California or anywhere else “that encourages or facilitates efforts to obtain elective abortions” is, or should be, absurd. Then again, the Supreme Court’s conservatives haven’t been entirely beholden to precedent lately. And, technically, the Fugitive Slave Act was never declared unconstitutional. That’s not Missouri lawmakers’ only “innovation” in their quest to control the uterus. Representative Brian Seitz’s HB 2810 makes it a felony to traffic “abortion-inducing devices or drugs” — and the most serious felony, with as high as a 30-year sentence, is reserved for doing so if those devices or drugs are used to abort a fetus older than 10 gestational weeks or an ectopic pregnancy. You read that last part correctly. Ectopic pregnancies — when the fetus implants outside of the uterus — are always nonviable and often harmful, even fatal, to the mother. Seitz has no idea what an ectopic pregnancy is, and he’s writing laws to prevent women from getting medical care to treat it.

Unsurprisingly, his bill is based on other scientific fallacies. In a hearing last week, he argued that abortion medications can “actually kill a woman.” When a journalist pointed out that, in real life, those meds are safer than Tylenol, and 14 times safer than childbirth, Seitz responded, “I’m not a doctor.” You don’t say. In this same spirit, Idaho Republicans declared transgender youth an “emergency” and not only made it a felony to provide minors with gender-affirming health care — puberty blockers, hormone therapy, etc. — but also made it a felony for parents to take their children across state lines for treatment. Both crimes are punishable by life imprisonment. Again, in more normal judicial times, such legislation would immediately be laughed out of federal court. But these times are not normal. Texas was no slouch in the anti-trans department, either. At the governor’s direction, the state’s child welfare agents were investigating parents who provided their children with gender-affirming care as abusers — until a state judge shut that down last week. The state has promised to appeal, and it seems more likely than not that the legislature will intervene if a higher court doesn’t. Across the country this year, Republicans have proposed nearly 30 bills that seek to prevent transgender children from accessing health care. Eleven states have banned transgender girls from participating in school sports. Republicans in Tennessee and Wisconsin have introduced legislation to preempt local anti-discrimination protections. Then there’s Florida’s grossly homophobic “Don’t Say

Gay” bill, which seeks to eradicate any mention of sexual orientation or gender identity from the state’s elementary classrooms and allowing parents to sue if they believe little Johnny was forced to endure an “age-inappropriate” discussion about The Gays. (Here again, enforcement by bounty hunter.) When Disney’s CEO belatedly weighed in against the bill, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ spokeswoman dismissed the entertainment behemoth as a “woke corporation” and insinuated via tweet that critics of the bill are pedophiles grooming children for sex. DeSantis banked $50,000 from Disney, while the state GOP brought in more than $900,000 during the 2020 cycle. (Having helped bigots take control of the state, Disney has now paused its political donations.) There are a few common themes in these examples. One is the constant search for new culture-war territory — another way to define themselves in opposition to the “wokes” and own the libs — which is the closest thing the post-Trump GOP has to an agenda. The other is control: leveraging power to impose white, Christian, heteronormative values on a society whose people — especially young people — are rejecting them. In that sense, the Fugitive Slave Act was little different. Southern states asserted the primacy of their beliefs over others’ freedoms and — by threatening secession — bent the rest of the country to their will. We haven’t gotten to secession. But Republicans are trying to privilege their beliefs over the rights of others.

specifically, the wicked liquor it infuses into the whitefish. “More rice, please” is a refrain often heard among those who eat it on the regular, and there are regulars. On one visit, a young chap felt compelled to peek his head out of a neighboring booth and implore us to order the “beef fillets with tofu pudding” ($17.99). Consider me grateful. Unlike the “boiled pots fish,” the silken curd and plush beef weren’t bathed in liquid fire, but in a less volcanic, somewhat earthy-flavored broth that we scarfed with great vigor. But nowhere was the assumed connection to Chuan Lu Garden more evident than in three specific dishes: No. 1, the fragrant and heady cumin beef ($17.99); No. 2, the sour and spicy slivers of sauteed potato ($10.99); and No. 3, the la zi ji “spicy and crispy chicken” ($14.99), a bonfire of fried poultry bits, Sichuan peppercorns and tien tsin chilies. All bore a resemblance and flavor likeness to the same dishes offered at Chuan Lu, meaning all three are well worth ordering. The lone clunker in my two visits here was the stir-fried green beans ($10.99). Tough, chewy skins rendered many of the beans inedible. We were told they received a bad batch, but what we should’ve been told is that they’ve been temporarily taken off the menu because of a supply issue. (I will say the garlicky wok hei in those subpar beans was spot-on.) The main ingredient may have been off, but there was nothing wrong with the execution of this staple, or any of the others I sampled. Aficionados of Sichuan cuisine would do well to get a taste of Yummy Taste — the food may burn a hole in your gut, but it won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

Anqor Lounge, a Ukrainian-owned tea room and hookah bar that also offers light bites, has opened in the Dellagio Town Center in Dr. Phillips ... Look for another outpost of Aji Ceviche Bar to open on South Semoran Boulevard near the airport … Friendship BBQ, a stateside chain offering Xinjiang-style chuan’r (grilled skewers cooked over wood), will open at 5126 W. Colonial Drive, next door to the Oriental Supermarket. An opening date hasn’t been released as yet … Tom’s Watch Bar, a boob-tube-heavy sports bar by Smashburger founder Tom Ryan, will open on the top floor of the Hollywood Plaza Garage entertainment complex at 8126 International Drive. Tom’s Watch Bar has five locations around the country, including Las Vegas, Denver and Los Angeles. Look for the Orlando location to open by the end of the year … Nearby, King Cajun Crawfish has opened an outpost at 5931 International Drive. It’s the third location for the local outfit, which has locations in Mills 50 and Dr. Phillips … Shake Shack opens its first-ever drive-through location on Tuesday, March 22, here in Orlando. It’ll be at Vineland Pointe at 11637 Daryl Carter Parkway. … Look for BR 77 Brazilian Steakhouse to open in the Promenade at Sunset Walk in the Margaritaville Resort later this spring … Local Green Atlanta, a fast-casual, plantbased restaurant based in Cleveland (just kidding, it’s Atlanta), has opened Local Green Orlando, a plant-based food truck on the West Side of Disney Springs.

Was she under the spell of a sleazy Svengali she had fallen in love with? Or was she just practicing to open a theater in Orlando? (Netflix) The Great Robbery of Brazil’s Central Bank — Tunneling 80 meters underground to steal 3-1/2 tons of used bills may have seemed like the perfect crime, but it apparently caused nothing but trouble for the perpetrators. Still, ask yourself what you wouldn’t do for 3-1/2 tons of used trouble. (Netflix)

Playgirl. Ophelia Lovibond portrays the gutsy founder of a women’s magazine that uses naked dudes to sell its message of empowerment in the 1970s. As was the case with the source material, expect a huge chunk of this show’s audience to be immaculately exfoliated youth pastors whose wives are out of town. (HBO Max) Rescued by Ruby — A couple of misfits find each other in a heartwarming drama film about an underperforming state trooper and the rowdy shelter dog that becomes his partner. Can a drooling, seemingly hopeless animal learn to suppress its instinct for chaos and go by the book? Also, what’s going to happen to the dog? (Netflix)

Pedal to the Metal — Mexico sends us a drama series about two street racers who go on the lam after one of their contests ends in tragedy. Nothing in the world will make sense to me until I am reassured that somebody at some point suggested calling this thing Juan in 60 Seconds. (Netflix)

Soil — Black comedy is the byproduct when a Belgian entrepreneur hits on the idea of importing dirt from Morocco so his country’s Muslims can technically be buried in their native ground. I’m no expert in the world’s great religions, but I do recall this leading to a lot of trouble when Bela Lugosi tried it. Bevare, Belgium! (Netflix)

Black Crab — In post-apocalyptic Sweden, humanity’s chances of survival depend upon a soldier (Noomi Rapace) who has to transport a mysterious parcel across a frozen wasteland. How reassuring to know that no matter how bad the future gets, DoorDash will still be there to bring you your lutefisk. (Netflix)

DMZ — Rosario Dawson and Benjamin Bratt headline a fourepisode miniseries based on the DC/Vertigo comic of the same name, in which Manhattan becomes the dividing line between warring factions in the Second American Civil War. Boy, I never thought the phrase “I’m on the New Jersey side of Staten Island” would qualify as a political statement. (HBO Max)

Cheaper by the Dozen — It’s more than a little depressing that this Zach Braff–Gabrielle Union vehicle is being billed as a remake of the 2003 Steve Martin hit about a blended family, erasing the actual 1950 original. Is our cultural memory really that short? It’s like calling Ron DeSantis the heir apparent to Donald Trump without even mentioning Cthulhu. (Disney+)

Jellystone! — Positive reaction from Hanna-Barbera acolytes and new fans alike ensured a second season for this multicharacter romp. Beyond that, an additional 40 episodes have already been ordered. Fun context: The original Magilla Gorilla only ran for 31. Don’t try to tell me life doesn’t get better! (HBO Max) Minx — What The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel did for the Cold War and stand-up, Minx is out to do for the Me Decade and

Master — Regina Hall plays one of three female academics struggling to flourish in the shadow of the Salem witch trials. I mean, I can see where those things didn’t exactly qualify as inclusivity outreach. On the other hand, try getting a decent grade in Gender Studies without mentioning ’em. (Amazon Prime)

Deep Water — Having lured us into a false sense of security through two decades of inactivity, Adrian Lyne is back to debase us with more stylishly rendered male paranoia. This time, the man who gave the world Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal has cast Ben Affleck as a poor husband who pays the price for letting his wife sleep around on him. Gosh, remember when the guys in Lyne flicks got paid for whoring out the missus? Maybe he’s spent the past 20 years reading Chomsky or something. (Hulu)

Standing Up — Paris is the setting for a scripted drama about four friends from highly different walks of life who spend their off hours trying to make it as stand-up comics. See, you can already tell they’re doing it wrong. Stand-up comics don’t have friends! (Netflix) WeCrashed — Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway are the leads in an eight-episode limited series that dramatizes the very public struggles of the shared-office-space company WeWork. Trivia hounds take note: Hathaway’s character, Rebekah Neumann, is a real-life cousin of Gwyneth Paltrow. And when Anne Hathaway is playing a relative of Gwyneth Paltrow, it’s like the entire world gets to fill in three spaces on their Insufferability Bingo card. (Apple TV+) Windfall — Andrew Kevin Walker of Se7en fame co-wrote this thriller about a thief (Jason Segel) who takes a wealthy couple hostage in their vacation home. And Se7en, course, co-starred Gwyneth Paltrow, who is suddenly exerting an extremely frightening degree of influence over this column. Let’s move on to the next blurb before my nethers start to smell like a Wicks ’n Sticks. (Netflix) Without Saying Goodbye — When he’s sent to Peru for work, an all-business architect meets a free-spirited backpacker, leading to a life-changing epiphany for one of them. Wouldn’t it be a kick if he taught her to abandon her dreams and pursue a path of joyless drudgery? It sure would wash the stink of all those Hallmark Christmas movies out of your head. (Netflix) Young, Famous & African — The first reality series to come out of Africa introduces us to the power players on Johannesburg’s media/entertainment scene, including Zari the Boss Lady and Swanky Jerry. You can’t fool us: Those are characters on Pinky and the Brain! (Netflix)

PREMIERES TUESDAY: Jeff Foxworthy: The Good Old Days — Just what were these “good old days” like that hillbilly jester Foxworthy intends to laud in his latest stand-up special? Here’s a hint: There weren’t any stars coming out of Johannesburg. (Netflix) The Principles of Pleasure — This frank and informative limited series seeks to dispel the fear and shame that tend to attach themselves to women’s sexual experience. Wow, if being revolted by your own pleasure is a chick thing, I must be in touch with my feminine side after all. (Netflix) Queen Stars — And just in case you were wondering if there’s any overworked fad we can’t export, here’s a drag competition that focuses on Brazilian artists. Southern Fried Sunday celebrates turning old enough to drive with a great big musical bash BY MATTHEW MOY ER

“T

here’s something about a Sunday. Everything just seems a little bit more laid-back,” muses Jessica Pawli when asked about the easy-going, welcoming feel of her long-running Southern Fried Sunday musical event series. Indeed, before #SundayFunday was a rallying cry from every two-bit brunch spot in the known universe, Southern Fried Sunday was putting on events that lengthened out the feeling of weekend possibility and hijinks just that little bit more. SFS has been dulling the Monday dread for 16 years now with roots and Americana showcases paired up with strong spirits and fine Southern cuisine. This weekend, Southern Fried Sunday hits peak rebellious teenage years with a bash scaled to match. The all-day affair will sprawl over all three stages at Will’s Pub — the home to SFS for the last decade — and you can expect to see and hear

from performers young and old, repeat SFS offenders and first-timers. On offer are the Red Elvises (who also played SFS’ 10th anniversary), Nervous Turkey, Skinny McGee & His Mayhem Makers, Kaleigh Baker & Matt Walker, Will Quinlan, Elizabeth Ward, Matt Woods & Lauris Vidal and more. JC’s Soul Food Truck will be on hand to serve up thematically appropriate and delicious vittles. Attendees will also have a chance to (metaphorically, we’re fairly certain) peer inside the brain of a musician during a recording of Woods’ Songs Matter podcast on site, with Vidal and Woods talking the nuts and bolts of songwriting. “He and Lauris will talk about their songwriting processes and what inspires them, and break down certain songs,” enthuses Pawli. “Two stalwart musicians of Southern Fried Sunday, giving people the opportunity to gain insight into

them as artists and as creatives, is really kind of cool.” Thinking back to the beginnings of Southern Fried Sunday years back, Pawli remembers not being able to find the shows that scratched all her diverse musical itches. So she worked to build them. “It started as a spin-off of the popular Bluegrass Sundays at the Copper Rocket which had been going on for years before we turned it into Southern Fried Sunday. … At the time, I was going out to see bands like Lucero and Drive By Truckers and Reverend Horton Heat and the HorrorPops. … And we had some bands that would consistently open for them, but there didn’t seem to be this local community getting behind all of the [local] roots music,” says Pawli. “I wanted to create Southern Fried Sunday and continue the tradition that was there in place but bring the music to new fans, and new music to current fans. For me, the goal was always to help bands build a fanbase, and help fans discover new music.” When thinking back on her favorite moments of the past 16 years, Pawli free-associates a short survey of some treasured memories — and don’t get her started on the year they tried out Chickenshit Bingo (it is exactly what it sounds like). “When we first moved Southern Fried Sunday over to Will’s from Copper Rocket, those first few shows were really special. … Dex Romweber Duo at the Copper Rocket. … Some of the benefit shows that I did for the Mustard Seed. In July I would do a big Southern Fried Sunday. It always fell around my birthday. I would invite people to come celebrate with me, but make it a benefit to raise money to help people who were homeless in our community transition into a new home. So we teamed up with the Mustard Seed. … [ continued on next page ]

There was one we did with a car show and a bike show and a pin-up girl show and stages all up and down Mills. … We had a whisky tasting one in the parking lot of Wally’s. American American headlined that one, and were like, ‘We don’t think we’ve ever played a show in the parking lot of a liquor store before.’ … I think every Southern Fried show is super special in its own way.” Pawli affectionately namechecks multi-appearance local performers like Beartoe and Rickey Dickens, but all roads seem to lead back to Central Florida musician Kaleigh Baker. “I’ve worked with Kaleigh Baker for at least … 13 years of the past 16 years,” says Pawli. “And it’s been amazing to see local acts like her who you wouldn’t consider local anymore grow up while the event was growing up as well.” Baker tells OW, “I think I may have played one of the first iterations of this event. It was at the Copper Rocket over a decade ago and I was playing a short opening acoustic set. “It was pivotal in a few facets of my development over the years. It was the first time I saw Nervous Turkey. It was the first time I saw the unmatched power of Terri Binion … Ms. Binion became my most cherished mentor. I’ve had a string of beautiful music relationships forged as a result of playing Southern Fried Sunday.”

For Pawli, the food served on site can be as important an element of the overall aesthetic as the music. She shouts out Swine & Sons, Uncle Jones Barbecue, local pitmaster Clay Watson and the aforementioned JC’s Soul Food Truck as all-stars in providing the essential element of Southern and soul food. “There’s the experience of sharing a meal together, people breaking bread together,” explains Pawli. “I think it brings people closer together.” Despite an unwavering focus on music that is reverential toward traditional American songcraft, Pawli has never been afraid of tweaking the Southern Fried Sunday format, from moving the event 10 years ago to trying new spins on the core concept — the Southern Belle Ball, the SFS-suffused Will’s A Faire markets, Southern Punk Sunday or even taking the whole production virtual for some livestreams during the pandemic year of 2020. She’s got a large audience willing to follow wherever she takes them aesthetically. “Southern Fried Sunday is one of the city’s most wonderfully organic traditions. It’s gone from a folksy little local gathering to a regional draw, all while keeping that unmistakably familial vibe,” says OW music columnist Bao Le-Huu, who’s attended more than a few. “That soul there is

what makes it such a special affair.” Pawli is looking forward as she looks back on Southern Fried Sunday’s history. “I want to keep doing Southern Fried Sunday but I think I want to do it in more unconventional ways … in more unconventional spaces,” says Pawli. “I like to push the limits. I’m always looking to go bigger, or do things in new ways. That’s what I’m hoping for Southern Fried Sunday in the future.” In the very immediate future however, besides this week’s anniversary affair, Pawli — under the Southern Fried Sunday umbrella — is teaming with Will’s to host a multigenerational touring group of queer country artists, featuring Lavender Country, on March 25. There’s apparently little sleep permitted when you’re building a scene around the music you love. We’ll give Kaleigh Baker the last word, musing on the heart of SFS: “There’s a hand — sometimes hands — that props up a scene. Someone to curate and nurture a growing, erratic, loud and beautiful being. Someone is putting the food on the table and burping the baby. The secret ingredient isn’t the BBQ sauce, it’s Jessica Pawli.”

If you haven’t been keeping up with Orlando indie-pop star Marc With a C lately then — holy drama, mama — have you got some catching up to do. In a nutshell, it’s been a bombshell. Actually, a surreal chain of them that’s entailed devastating life upheavals and a stunning overhaul of the famous Marc With a C concept that’s built a considerable following over the past two decades. He’s been pretty open about everything, so scroll through his social media for the fuller story. But, essentially, the “Phase II” chapter of Marc With a C’s career gets real and drops the act. It’s a sweeping sea change that jettisons the whole MWAC persona and shifts to the direct perspective of Marc Sirdoreus, the actual genderfluid person behind the iconic male veil. Now, the new and true Marc With a C is finally out with the recently released Thanatophobia album. Marc’s always been an artist of extraordinary detail, but the launch of this new era is especially involved. Lyrically, Marc’s first-person explorations here draw from his deep well of recent IRL struggles. It’s a maskless journey into personal saga that’s acutely intimate and naked. As for the music, MWAC devotees can breathe easy. Although his perspective has shifted dramatically, his musical instincts haven’t. A vibrant hive of pop, psych, folk and his unmistakable expression, these 11 tracks ring familiar with Marc’s touch. To grandly mark the momentous new epoch, Thanatophobia is designed as an elaborate and high-concept work. The album comes with a companion piece titled Phobophobia to be played simultaneously for an augmented and surrounding experience. Marc’s powers of examination, commentary and delivery are what made him a

Ministry, Melvins, Corrosion of Conformity: OK, for real this time. After several COVID postponements since 2020, it looks like Ministry’s Industrial Strength Tour is finally coming through. It was originally intended as a 30-year celebration of their game-changing masterpiece album The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste (which, incidentally, was the first CD I ever owned and terrorized my parents with). But the industrial-metal pioneers have since released an entirely new album, Moral Hygiene. So, rewarding your pandemic patience, this show will be a twofer featuring both the hits and new material debuts. The bill’s further maxed out with openers who are legends in their own right, assuming you can get past Buzz Osborne’s cringey interview appearances with Proud Boy Gavin McInnes and cult hero.
