Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis marked the very first day of Pride month by signing into law the horrific “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act” (groaning eternally) at a private Christian school (tearing out the last few intact tufts of our hair) in Jacksonville. The new law prohibits transgender student-athletes from competing alongside other women and girls, and never was there a more perfect representation of a solution in search of a problem and/or the rawest of red meat for his base. Orlando Rep. Anna V. Eskamani was one of many lawmakers who issued scathing statements about the bill, saying, “This bigoted, transphobic piece of legislation targets one of the most vulnerable groups of people in our state: transgender youth.” Florida can expect to spend years — and untold amounts of taxpayers’ dollars — fighting this case in court. Our readers were angered by this as well. @Daniel Higgins Nice way to kick off Pride month. If only Florida cared less about little kids’ genitals and more about things to better Floridians, maybe they wouldn’t be in such crippling debt and so dependent on government subsidies. WE’VE HAD FIVE YEARS LEFT TO CRY IN It’s been five years — half a decade — since the Pulse nightclub massacre on June 12, 2016, and it still hurts. More than likely it always will. On that night five years ago, a gunman opened fire on revelers at the LGBTQ nighclub’s Latin night and 49 lives were lost, mostly Latin and people of color. The city rallied around the survivors, their families and loved ones, and the LGBTQ community at large, demonstrating that, yes, sometimes love wins … or at least can stand a fighting chance. In so many ways, Orlando is still reeling from the events of that night, like having the wind knocked out of you after a vicious punch to the stomach. For years. Too many vibrant lives were lost, while they were out celebrating in a place where they felt safe and part of a family. Too many had their lovers, parents, children and friends ripped away from them. Too many police officers, EMTs, nurses and doctors were permanently traumatized by what they saw that night. Too many community organizers, advocates and journalists still feel the post-traumatic stress of burying themselves in every detail of the tragedy, for weeks, months, years after that night. In an age of infinite cynicism, the immediate outpouring of love, resources and community solidarity in the days following Pulse was a damn beautiful thing. We blink and see the long lines at blood banks and donation centers. We blink again and see volunteers wearing ethereal robes and 12
angel wings to shield mourners from Westboro Baptist Church bigots. And then it becomes difficult to blink because tears are welling up in our eyes. Pulse would never reopen its doors after that night. It became a mourning site, a place to attempt to process grief communally, to leave gifts for and mementos of those taken from us, a place that would soon be covered in vivid memorial artwork, and eventually a place for people all around the county — Bill Clinton, Tyler Perry, Ricky Martin are a few of the more surreal names — to pay their respects. A bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives recently designated the Pulse site a national memorial. “Orlando swore as a community to never forget those we lost that night,” said Rep. Darren Soto, D-Kissimmee, who sponsored that bill. “Together we will open minds and hearts, we will make the Pulse memorial a national symbol of hope, love and change.” Orlando as a city marks this Pulse anniversary as it does every year — with memorials and music and art and gatherings (possible again!) and quiet (or loud) reflection. Our governor seemingly marked the anniversary by hurtfully vetoing mental health funding for Pulse survivors provided by the LGBTQ+ Center here in Central Florida. He also vetoed funding that the Zebra Coalition would have

used to convert an unused hotel into housing for homeless LGBTQ+ youth. That same week, a coalition of Orlando activists rallied at City Hall to protest DeSantis’ signing an anti-trans athlete bill into law. One of the lessons of Pulse was to be ready to stand with the LGBTQ+ community in word and deed, and we must all be vigilant of those who intend to discriminate and do harm. The promises of solidarity made in 2016 have no expiration date. We mark the Pulse anniversary in these pages with the names and pictures of those who died that horrible night, a listing of memorial events and celebrations of proud LGBTQ+ resilience all over Orlando, and a look at the Orange County History Center’s Pulse memorial exhibition *Community: Five Years After the Pulse Tragedy.* We leave you with words from Pulse survivor Adrian López, spoken to the crowd gathered at the “Orlando Unido” vigil in front of the Dr. Phillips Center in the days following the shooting in June of 2016. These words stick with us now as much as they did then. Orange County History Center marks the anniversary of Pulse with a look at the meanings of ‘Community’ BY MATTHEW MOY ER

Can you talk a little bit about the concept of n May 29, the Orange County Regional History Center marked the fifth anniversary of Pulse with community, and the way it is explored in the the opening of Community: Five Years After the exhibit? Each year since the Pulse shooting, the History Center Pulse Tragedy. The multimedia exhibition tells the story of the tragic events and aftermath of June 12, 2016, plus has done an annual remembrance and each year we’ve the powerful stories of the club and the lives that were wanted to view it through a different lens and tell the story lost there. The exhibition includes video from families through different artifacts and different things. So this year and loved ones of the Pulse victims, tokens and tributes … sometimes we can spend an hour coming up with themes and an hour coming up with titles, from memorials and marches, and and this year it came really quickly to even the white piano from inside the Community: Five Years us: this idea of community and looknightclub. Tell me about gathering the oral histories that are included as part of this. We’ve been doing those on an ongoing basis for five years. We do them with those most closely impacted stakeholders but also community members further at large. We’ve also done oral histories of people in other states and other countries, based on what they were doing in their community — either hosting a vigil or helping to put on a remembrance for Pulse at the New York City Pride Parade and things like that. This is really a global story. This year we have some clips that we put in, footage of partying in the club prior to the night of shooting. So the idea is that people get a little bit of a feeling for what Pulse was for people who never had the opportunity to go there. It gives this sense of the fun and the love and everything that was happening there and it’s combined with clips of people who used to go there, people who worked there. It’s really incredible. Another place people have been spending a lot of time in the exhibition is a screen where we feature the families … we have a screen where we feature clips from families and friends of those who were killed. And they’re not talking about that night and they’re not talking about the aftermath, but talking about who their loved ones were before this happened to them. It’s about their love, their legacy, their life before. These are really beautiful clips and you really start to get a sense and a feel for more than just the name and the photo of these individuals that we’re all so used to seeing. It’s an important point, to not just reduce Pulse to the site of a shooting — and the victims each have a full, vibrant life story … And many different people who loved them. That’s really the thing, so who better to hear from than the people that loved them and can tell those stories? It’s beautiful and poignant to hear them talk about those people. You can feel it in their voices, speaking about them, how much they care for them, how much they love them and say how much they miss them. Can you talk about the work putting this together? It must have been overwhelming. I think that’s something that carries for us each year, how important we know this is and how deeply we want to make it right for our community and we want to do it right. This exhibit is different than any other exhibit every single year, because it means so much to our community. When history museums do exhibitions, it’s like, “I’m going to go learn about something in the past.” This is, “I’m going to learn about something, and I’m going to see something that I recognize that I was a part of.” And that’s different, when museums are exhibiting current and contemporary history because the people coming know the story. They were in that photo on the wall in line to give blood. So for us it holds a greater level of priority and responsibility to make sure that these exhibits are perfect as best we can, and to make sure that we are ultimately serving a purpose for our community to have a space and a place to go and feel safe and to mourn and to heal and to learn and to revisit those early days of the memorials. And remember, always remember.

rlando indie-folk band Someday River dropped their most expansive record yet, On Dreaming, in May and marked the occasion with an album release show at Will’s Pub. The band, led by Greyson Paul Charnock with a lineup of players from local stalwarts like Roadkill Ghost Choir and Day Joy, enthralled the crowd with their widescreen musical visions. The first-ever DigiFringe offers an opportunity to enjoy digital streams of award-winning shows you may have missed — or want to see again
The 2021 Orlando International
Fringe Theatre Festival is dead, long live the DigiFringe! Ordinarily, I’d be long recovered from my annual post-Fringe hangover by now, after seeing over 65 different productions and penning 50-plus reviews prior to the Festival’s “Patrons’ Pick” finale on Memorial Day. But this year, the Orlando Fringe has gone into extra innings with its first-ever DigiFringe, which offers an unusual opportunity to enjoy digital streams of many award-winning shows you may have missed — or want to experience again — during this year’s in-person event. The new DigiFringe service, which is sponsored by Imagination House, features 69 shows, 15 of which were on the 2021 Critics Choice list compiled by myself and Orlando Sentinel arts critic Matt Palm. Although Jakob Karr’s Ain’t Done Bad, our 2021 Critics’ Choice for Best Show, is not available for an online encore, nearly all our other picks can be rented at DigiFringe at $10 each (plus a $2 “digital button” service fee) for unlimited viewings from now through June 18. Outdoing the typical filmed Fringe show, many of these high-definition recordings are edited together from multiple camera angles, and although some captured technical issues suffered during the live productions, their audio quality is often better than what I experienced in the theater. The notable selections include our nods for Best Musical (Josie & Grace), Best Drama (Shakespeare’s Reservoir Dogs) and Best Comedy (It All Started at the Radisson Inn), along with the corresponding Solo Show categories (The 500 List, Rosegold and The Sack). Our picks for Best Dance Show (VarieTease’s Alchemist of Dreams), Variety/Specialty Show (Away Now) and Family Show (The Impossible Club) are online as well, and you can

study Brandon Roberts’ acclaimed direction of Cupid & Psyche or Beejay Clinton’s Judas script. Finally, Fringe fans can relive the award-winning performances from Ayataro Motomura (Mind Eater), Trevor Southworth (Oscar Wilde and Jesus Christ Walk Into a Gay Bar), Shelley Cooper (La Divina: The Last Interview of Maria Callas) and the Frogpig & Friends Variety Hour ensemble. In addition to the award-winners, DigiFringe also offers a second chance to see some quality shows I wasn’t able to review, such as visAbility, Logan Donahoo’s Slut Like Me and Lake Howell High School’s Spotlight. Better still, DigiFringe gives a few favorite out-of-town artists, who were unable to attend this year’s Orlando Fringe in the flesh, an opportunity to participate in the Festival, as well as providing an excuse for locals to unearth some vintage footage. Just 48 hours into DigiFringe, I’ve only started to make a dent in the nearly two dozen titles exclusive to the virtual festival, but here are three of my favorites so far: A Day in the Life of Miss Sammy
Originally presented in 2005, this dialogue-free comedic short written and co-directed by Michael Wanzie (who cameos as a persistent foot fetishist) features the late, great Sam Singhaus in his signature drag role. Friends and fans of Singhaus and his sister-in-law, Marcy (who designed his fabulous dresses), will love seeing Miss Sammy getting sauced at lost local landmarks like the Parliament House in this surreal John Waters-meets-BennyHill lark. Proceeds benefit Greater Orlando Performing Arts Relief.
Horsetale Hit the Lights Theater Co. uses old-fashioned overhead projectors and handmade paper cutouts to turn shadow puppetry into pure magic in this Wild West fable about a horse who runs faster than the wind and loses his tail. A couple of feuding musicians on their farewell tour form the framing story for the tale, which is told through amazing analog imagery, with an acid-tinged rockabilly soundtrack that resembles Dark Side of the Moon if it were written by Steppenwolf. This show would be wonderful in person, but the video might be even better because it includes backstage camera angles that allow you to observe these wizards at work. Chainz Playwright Paris Crayton III starts his searing drama with the striking image of four Black men with their hands wrapped in heavy chains, and it only gets more provocative from there. A kind of No Exit for racial oppression, Chainz locks a quartet of incompatible personalities together in a jail cell after a peaceful protest turns violent and lets them battle over the proper response to systemic injustice. The incisive script eschews the usual white perspective to focus on the self-perpetuating cycle of internalized racism that fuels class conflict within the Black community, and it’s charged with electric dialogue, which the cast delivers with passion (particularly Carlus Houston as George, the homeless voice of hope). But the most devastating thing about this timely tragedy is that it was filmed in 2014, proving how little progress we’ve made in the seven years since. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Financier Bistro in Winter Park may have lost its namesake pastry, but it’s gained quite a following BY FAIYAZ KARA

inancier Pâtisserie once counted such primo Manhattan locales as Grand Central Station, World Trade Center, 42nd Street and Park Avenue in its portfolio before COVID came and took it all away. “To our loyal and longtime clientele, it is with great sadness that we have come to the conclusion to permanently shut down Financier Pâtisserie NYC,” wrote co-founders Peter Poulakakos and Eric Bedoucha on Facebook. Total suckage. Bedoucha left, but Poulakakos and his business partner Paul Lamas opted to keep their new Winter Park location open. Théo Goupil, Financier’s executive pastry chef who oversaw the Florida expansion, became executive chef and operating partner of the Florida restaurant with the most New York address ever (212 N. Park Ave.) and, together with his wife and general manager, Danielle, performed a pivot that was downright Kobe-like. The chichi patisserie was re-concepted into a chichi bistro and pastries were sacrificed — the namesake financier included — in favor of polished plates of French bistro fare. That said, Goupil still fashions a variety of croissants and brioche breads every morning, though not the brioche buns used for the $18 bistro burger. It’s pricey, it’s
hard to resist the caramelized onions, barbecue-like house sauce and melted Gruyère running down the sides and oozing onto shoestring frites. It’s a pretty burger, worthy of Financier’s pretty space, save for the gaudy “But First, Coffee” neon sign plugged in above the bar. I mean, pourquoi? Having worked as a pastry chef for many years, Goupil places great importance on plating and food styling — hell, the ratatouille ($14), looking like a supernova fashioned from slivers of zucchini and squash, could be taped to a wall and sold for $100,000. Beats a banana, if you ask me. And if you want to put on airs at Financier Bistro, go right ahead. If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that restaurants are more than just repositories of sustenance — they’re places to have a bit of fun. A gorgeous place like this lends a platform for us to sing C’est si bon while enjoying a plate of burrata ($16) with heirloom cherry tomatoes slicked in arugula pistou. Bite into a bread baton, then sip a Provençal rosé

Ava, the high-end Mediterranean restaurant going into the old Luma space on Park Ave., is currently under construction. The restaurant boasts formal and informal dining spaces, two bars, a VIP lounge reserved for AVA members and an “underground mixology bar.” Expect a late 2021 opening … Brad Czerkies, owner of Instagram sensation Brad’s Underground Pizzeria, will move his Chicago-style deep-dish pizza ops to the Collab Kitchens at 4400 Curry Ford Road. The new Brad’s will offer a carryout option in addition to deliveries being made through a third-party delivery service. Expect baking to commence next month … Florida-based meat market Wild Fork Foods is under construction on the corner of Fairbanks and South Orlando avenues. Another Wild Fork Foods is expected to open at the Fountains plaza in Dr. Phillips later this month … Sugar Dough Bakehouse, a sister concept to Winter Park creampuffery Light on the Sugar, will open in time for the Fourth of July long weekend in the old Blue Bird Bake Shop space in Audubon Park … Latin fusion restaurant Guava Grill has opened on Sun Vista Way off Golden Road near Pershing Ave. … Soho Juice Co. in Winter Park has reopened after completing some renovations … On I-Drive, Mango’s Tropical Cafe will reopen June 10.
while swaying to the tune in your head. Note: Voices do carry inside the inviting space, but there are sidewalk tables at which to enjoy additional bistro classics like the croque monsieur ($16). The thick slabs of sourdough (sourced from Douce France Bakery) on this ham-and-cheese sandwich come with béchamel and Gruyère baked on top. It’s served with greens tossed in a Dijon vinaigrette. Now I realize food, supply and labor costs have gone up, and restaurants are staggering in this post-pandemic world but, I’ll admit, it was a bit hard to stomach paying $22 for a quarter-chicken poulet rôti — perfectly roasted and crispy-skinned as it was — along with fries and a small salad. The flaky chocolate-hazelnut croissant ($4.25), on the other hand, was gut-loving goodness. While the Madagascar vanilla crème brûlée ($7) sits on the opposite end of the texture spectrum, it, too, was flawless. So what of the financier? Give Goupil a 48-hour heads up and he’ll gladly make you an almond or chocolate version of the barshaped cake. My personal belief is that as the restaurant comes out of the pandemic under more stable footing, the financier will, once again, be a permanent fixture on the menu. You can bank on that.

PREMIERES THURSDAY: The Greatest Race — The one thing I was going to give the virus credit for was canceling the Olympics. But we’re going to have to put up with them anyway in just a few weeks, so you might as well get ready with this documentary profile of Michael Phelps and the rest of the 2008 men’s swimming team. Among the priceless archival footage: Phelps’ aborted commercial for Wheaties, which he blows by repeatedly averring that he begins every day with a bowl of “that sweet, sweet cheeba.” (Peacock) Infinite — Mark Wahlberg plays a diagnosed schizophrenic who learns that his alleged delusions are really flashbacks to his past lives. Trese — Detective Alexandra Trese makes the leap from comics to a six-episode anime series that pits her against the supernatural creatures in charge of Manila’s criminal underworld. PREMIERES FRIDAY: Flack — The second and final season of the sleazy British drama finally drops, giving Anna Paquin’s PR-agent character a new bunch of celebrity clients to clean up after. (Amazon Prime) In the Heights — Musical-theater snobs are already howling with fury about the songs that have been omitted from this feature adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s pre-Hamilton work. Listen, Man in Chair: I got over “Bushel and a Peck” being cut from Guys and Dolls. So you can live without “Sunrise,” comprende? (HBO Max) Lupin — In episodes 5-10 of the French-made suspense series, lovable con man Assane Diop (Omar Sy) continues his quest to avenge his father’s death, with a beloved literary character as his inspiration. Good thing it wasn’t Madeline, because he never would have fooled anybody in that little hat. (Netflix) Zenimation Season 2 — Zone out to a new collection of images from classic Disney films, strung together bereft of dialogue. Yeah, I always thought Pocahontas would have been better if you didn’t actually have to hear it. (Disney+)
PREMIERES TUESDAY: Headspace: Unwind Your Mind — Not to be undone by some damn Aristocats montage, the creators of the world’s most famous relaxation app bring us an interactive animated special full of tools for attaining maximum chill. LOCAL RELEASES
Orlando punk veteran Tracey Blades has, over the years, been in an impressive string of great local bands like Fashion! Fashion! and the Image Boys, RunnAmucks and Eat the Elderly. But now he’s finally emerging from all the racket and wreckage to front his very own vehicle with Born Losers, who just released their eponymous debut single. Available now as a name-your-price download on Bandcamp, “Born Losers” is a freewheeling punk anthem that revels in fatalist glory, hurtling toward the cliff with the volume up, the top down and the ghost of Johnny Thunders riding shotgun. It’s a fast, loose and catchy drive that mines gold from the gutter. The live band lineup currently has Nick Mecannic (lead guitar and backing vocals), Jon Lane (bass) and Ryan Went (drums) flanking Blades. But the recording of “Born Losers,” which was done about three years ago, features the illustrious likes of Sam Johnson (New Mexican Disaster Squad, Autarx, Grave Return) on lead guitar and Josh “Danger” Dobbs (RunnAmucks, Danger Room Recording Service) on rhythm guitar. Besides being a good debut, the noteworthy thing about “Born Losers” is that it’s an auspicious first taste of a catalog that’s already been steadily building for several years. Although his work’s just starting to see light now, Blades has kept recording these past few years, and he’s amassed two albums of material in the can: a first LP recorded with Dobbs and a second with Joe Queer of the Queers. As for the release of that music, Blades says he’s been in talks with a couple of different record labels, but the most serious so far has been with Joe Queer’s All Star Records. So, speaking of stars, it looks like

big, rich voice always delivers on stage. Matt Woods and Austin Lucas: This mighty double-headed bill packs two paragons in the Americana underground who’ve earned tons of Orlando cred perhaps enough of them are aligning to through years of bleeding performances make Born Losers an Orlando band to keep here and mixing it up with the locals. “DUMPLINGS” I’ve been living with my boyfriend for a year. We met on FetLife and I was honest about being in an open relationship (at the time) and seeking a sexual connection over a relationship. But pretty soon we were professing our love for each other and he shared that he wanted to be the father of my children. However, right before he moved in, I found out he was still texting other women despite asking me not to text, sext or have sex with any other men. He also regularly “yucks my yum” and makes fun of the types of porn I watch and calls it “gross” (my thing for cuckolding being his main target), and he also insists men can’t be friends with women, yet he’s still friends with women he’s had sex with. He hides the fact he is masturbating from me but expects to participate in all my masturbation sessions. He claims we have no sexual secrets, but I snooped and learned he was looking at porn with titles like “TS,” “sissy,” “gay” and “BBW Black.” It makes me feel small because of the nagging feeling I may not be his cup of tea, since he hides these other interests from me while not allowing me to hide anything from him. I also worry that his “affection” for my black BBW ass may be no different than his objectification of trans women. Because by staying in this relationship despite his half-truths, his double standards and his hypocrisies — by sticking around to be shamed and manipulated — you’re sending him a message that says, “It’s fine, you’re fine, we’re fine.” Perhaps I shouldn’t say, “You’re sending him a message,” because this shit isn’t your fault, FET. But he will self-servingly interpret your willingness to stay and work on the relationship — as if the relationship is the problem here — as proof that he doesn’t need to do something about his own shit. He will assume he can continue to get away
with being a controlling, manipulative and sex-shaming asshole … because he’s getting away with it. When your current boyfriend “yucks your yum,” when he says the porn you like is gross, he’s projecting the shame he feels about all the non-normative (but perfectly wonderful) stuff that turns him on. When someone vomits their shame all over you, FET, getting yourself out of vomit-range is your best option. And for the record: I don’t think your boyfriend is messy because he’s interested in more kinds of sex than he admits, or more types of women than just your type of woman or dudes, or power games that touch on gender roles and/or taboos. And the fact that he’s hiding his attraction to trans women from you isn’t by itself proof that he objectifies trans women, FET, or that he’s objectifying you. You don’t know how he would interact (or how he has interacted) with a trans partner. What you do know is he treats you like shit and makes you feel bad about yourself and demands transparency from you without being transparent in return. DTMFA. P.S. Please don’t let his shitty comments about your turn-ons lead you to doubt your desirability — just the fact that you’re into cuckolding makes you something of a prize, FET, as there are easily a hundred times as many men into cuckolding as there are women.
