CAN WE BREATHE?

Orlando erupts in protest, mirroring the rest of the country, as citizens demand an end to police brutality BY MATTHEW MOY E R A N D DAV E P LOT KI N

I

n the wake of the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis by ex-police officer Derek Chauvin, emotional anti-racism protests erupted across the United States – and around the world – and that included Central Florida. Protests began in earnest in Orlando late last Thursday night in Windermere, when news spread that Chauvin owned a house in the neighborhood and had possibly fled there to escape prosecution or worse. Dozens of protesters gathered in front of the house for a peaceful demonstration that went overnight and well into the next afternoon. By late Friday morning, Orange County law enforcement stated that Chauvin

was still in Minneapolis, where he had finally been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The other officers on the scene with Chauvin as he knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes, who did not intercede as Floyd gasped and cried out that he could not breathe, have still not been fired or charged with any crimes as of Monday morning. As Saturday dawned, protests and marches were held in cities large and small throughout the state. Some cities, like Jacksonville and Tallahassee, saw protests disrupted by violence and confrontations with police all too eager to break out the tear gas.

There were several concurrent protests in Orlando on Saturday – one originated yet again in Windermere, and several groups of protesters had made their way to downtown Orlando by Saturday afternoon. A large crowd of protesters marched through downtown to City Hall, while another group gathered in front of OPD headquarters for a protest that lasted late into the night. Another crowd of protesters gathered Saturday evening, as rain clouds loomed overhead, first blocking Orange Blossom Trail and then State Road 408. Orlando police used tear gas to disperse those gathered. Pepper spray was also used on CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

Saturday evening against some protesters downtown. Other news on Saturday included reports that Chauvin’s wife, the co-owner of the Windermere home, announced she will file for divorce as a result of his actions, which could present the former officer with additional legal complications when he is tried. Closer to home, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis activated the National Guard on Saturday – an ominous move, given the president’s trigger-happy tweets over the weekend cheering on violence and warning, “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.” (After many observers pointed out that this phrase is attributed to Miami Police Chief Walter Headley, during the 1967 civil rights riots, Trump told reporters he was unaware of the provenance of the phrase.) Even closer to home, there were reports of late-night vandalism, possibly related to the protests, in the area around the Mall at Millenia, affecting Krispy Kreme, the Container Store and Panda Express. On Sunday afternoon, there was another peaceful protest held in the Lake Eola and downtown area, with a large crowd gathering at Eola in the afternoon and marching to Orlando City Hall in the early evening. Also on Sunday afternoon, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings announced an open-ended curfew beginning Sunday evening and continuing nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. And though, on the one hand, Sheriff John Mina and Orlando Police Department Chief Orlando Rolón took a symbolic knee Sunday afternoon in solidarity with the protesters, on the other hand, tear gas was again deployed

against Orlandoans on Sunday night. The Sunday protest downtown initially progressed without incident. However, as the 10 p.m. curfew hit, police officers donned gas masks and moved to disperse a crowd gathered at a downtown OPD substation. Soon after, tear gas was used again, this time to disperse another group of protesters heading for I-4. The sound of hovering helicopters could be heard throughout nearby neighborhoods. Back in Minnesota on Sunday night, Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd was being interviewed by CNN’s Don Lemon when reporter Sara Sidner broke in to offer to ask Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo a question on Floyd’s behalf. Floyd asked why the other officers at the scene of his brother’s videotaped killing were not arrested. “Mr. Floyd died in our hands and so I see that as being complicit,” responded Arradondo to Philonise Floyd. “Silence and inaction, you’re complicit. If there was one solitary voice that would have intervened … that’s what I would have hoped for.” Arradondo said it is a decision for prosecutors whether to bring charges, but that he considers his officers responsible for Floyd’s killing on May 25. The GoFundMe fundraiser created four days ago for the George Floyd Memorial Fund surpassed $7 million by Monday morning. The movement appears far from over, with more protests scheduled this week, along with anticipated decisions in the charging of the other officers. 75 THINGS WE’VE LEARNED DURING QUARANTINE (AND HOPE TO REMEMBER AFTER IT’S OVER)

What meaningful lessons about empathy, resilience and toilet paper rationing will we take with us as we move forward into the future? BY HA ILEY BOL L I N G ER , L EE D EV I TO, DA N I E L H I L L , JA I ME L E E S , J E R I LY N J O R DA N , MATTH E W M OY ER, D OY LE M URPHY, STEVE NEAVLIN G , DAV E P LOT KI N , J ESSI CA B RYC E YO U N G A N D M A I JA Z U MM O

CHANCES ARE, if you are a human on

the planet Earth, you’ve recently spent the last six weeks (or more) in some type of quarantine – selfimposed, government-mandated or a combination of both. Unless, of course, you’re a health care worker, essential employee or have other extenuating circumstances that meant you couldn’t safely lock yourself away at home while figuring out what household textile to use as makeshift toilet paper or whether to binge Tiger King or Love Is Blind first. So why has the entire world come to a collective halt? Because we have no immunity to the novel coronavirus COVID-19, a highly contagious and highly deadly (to certain people) respiratory illness that has overwhelmed hospitals across the world, infecting more than 3.5 million people and killing more than 248,000 globally from January to May, according to Johns Hopkins University. There’s no real treatment (no, you cannot inject yourself with disinfectant or beams of light) and no vaccine, although scientists, medical professionals, researchers and Bill Gates are scrambling to find both. In the meantime, social distancing has been a stop-gap measure to help contain the spread of COVID-19 and “flatten the curve,” everyone’s favorite phrase for using isolation to decrease the amount of humans infected with the virus to avoid inundating the health care system and killing everyone. So, yes, we did acquire a new viral vocabulary during quarantine, but what else have we learned in the midst of this global pause? And what meaningful lessons about empathy, resilience and our shared humanity will we take with us as we move forward –

masked and hand-sanitized – into the future? Other than to be a better person and never take bartenders for granted again, that is.

What six feet apart actually looks like.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people practice social distancing to help stop the spread of COVID-19, which basically means standing six feet apart from each other so you can’t spew infected goo droplets onto other people. But “six feet” is a difficult concept to understand for those with no spatial awareness. So here are things that take up six feet: two averaged-sized dogs standing nose to tail, two grocery carts, a dude in a top hat laying on the ground, a dining room table, a bathtub, three arm spans and about one and 1/5ths Danny DeVitos.

That there are multiple names for the same disease. The novel coronavirus, in the

same family as SARS and MERS, goes by COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2. And for one hot second it went by a third name – the “Chinese virus” – but President Trump eventually stopped using the term, which he coined in late March, after many pointed out it was pretty racist.

What a pangolin is. These cute-ass scaly

anteaters are thought to have been an intermediate host for COVID-19, which may have jumped from bat to pangolin to human in a wet market in Wuhan, China – where the virus originated. In light of the pandemic, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture recently released a list of approved terrestrial animals that can be used for food; pangolins did not make an appearance. So it seems best to avoid eating them. Also bats. Also humans.

That we never want to hear the word “unprecedented” again. How to not touch our faces. Don’t. That’s

how germs get into your body.

To always have at least two weeks’ worth of toilet paper. Do. That’s how you

clean your butt.

On a more serious note... Look into buying a bidet.

Every song with a 20-second chorus.

“Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others,” says the CDC. And the best way to keep your digits disease-free is to wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds – or the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice – over and over and over again throughout the day. So while the public was discovering the importance of timed hygiene, and the mind-numbing repetition of singing happy birthday to themselves, they also uncovered CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

every other song with a 20-second chorus to break up the monotony of bathroom karaoke. The next time you wash your hands, trying singing the chorus to: Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” Beyoncé’s “Love on Top,” Prince’s “Raspberry Beret,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” Toto’s “Africa,” Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” or the Knack’s “My Sharona (Corona).”

What the actual coronavirus looks like. Besides looking like a Koosh ball or the iPhone germ emoji, it also resembles a statue currently installed in front of the Orange County Administration Building downtown called “Superstar” by Hanna Jubran.

Small businesses will step up when the government or supply chain can’t. When

America ran out of personal protective equipment for frontline workers, small businesses started pivoting their production. Those with access to 3-D printers started churning out plastic shields and masks, and home sewers and craft clubs started making their own cloth masks for people to wear over their medical masks. Textile producers and clothing labels across the U.S. used their resources to make masks as well.

That Floridians stock up on liquor in times of distress. The same week in March

that Gov. DeSantis said all bars and restaurants would have to close their doors to in-person service, Nielsen Research released statistics that alcohol sales went up 55 percent. Wine sales spiked 66 percent, and online orders soared 243 percent.

So can lions. Eight big cats at the Bronx Zoo tested positive for COVID-19 after contracting it from a zoo staffer.

That housecats can also catch the coronavirus. Two pet felines in New York state

were confirmed to have the coronavirus in late April after most likely getting it from humans. The CDC now recommends the same social distancing protocols for animals as they do for people. No more cat parties!

That it’s more important than ever to buy your musician friends’ albums. Live

music stopped for the most part in March, when bars and venues shut down. So out went most opportunities for local musicians to make money and promote their art on stage and in person. With that in mind, if there are Orlando or Floridian musicians whose work you enjoy, and they’ve kept it together enough to get some new music out during this pandemic, buy it. If you’ve got the liquid cash, buy an LP, a CD or a cassette; if you prefer digital, and have a few spare dollars, go to their Bandcamp page, especially on a day when Bandcamp waives artist fees, and pick up some downloads. They’ll appreciate the support now more than ever, and we need the music now more than ever.

That drive-by honkings are the new birthday parties. That distilleries can make alcohol for your hands and not just your mouth.

When the general public heard the word “pandemic,” they started hoarding toilet paper, guns and hand sanitizer. So when the CDC said, “If you’re going to make your own sanitizer, you need to make sure it uses at least 60 percent alcohol spirits,” distilleries thought: “We can do that.” So thanks, Winter Park Distilling, Yalaha Bootlegging Co., JLA Distillery, Loggerhead Distillery, Copper Bottom Craft, and others for making boozy hand sanitizer for first responders, health care workers and also general humans.

That Florida’s leadership failed you with a broken unemployment system

or someone you love desperately tries to navigate Florida’s glitchy and labyrinthine DEO web portal, waits for hours on hold only to speak to a representative who doesn’t have the power to be of much aid at all, or is left waiting weeks for unemployment benefits that are the lowest in the country, don’t forget who is responsible for this: Sen. Rick Scott. As governor, he stripped unemployment benefits to the bone and paid cronies millions to devise a garbage website that treats you like an ungrateful peasant for begging for the table scraps of $275 a week. Equally culpable is Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has failed utterly to right these wrongs or even pretend to give a damn about the Floridians in need that he works for. Vote them out when the next opportunity comes. They have failed you and deserve no place in public life.

That the Insane Clown Posse cares more for its people than many American politicians. As the TV airwaves filled

up with politicians and talking heads clamoring for states to reopen and save the economy regardless of the potential loss of human life, some real leadership emerged: Namely, that of the Insane Clown Posse, two face-painted clowns from Detroit who shut down their annual Gathering of the Juggalos festival months ahead of its planned dates, saying they were unwilling to risk the life of even one juggalo in the face of a global pandemic. Our government, at the state and federal level, have a lot to learn from these wise men, who once gave speeches about their buttholes during a D.C. civil rights protest on the national mall.

That sweatpants can also just be called “pants.” That teachers should be paid 10 times more for dealing with our unteachable heathen offspring. Oh, so you thought teach-

ing was easy, huh? Wrangling a bunch of snot-nosed, mouth-breathing beasts, animals restrained in their behaviors only by their relatively small size, uncaring creatures hellbent on refusing to learn and continuing to eat crayons. What fools you were. Now you are the one who rations the crayons; you are the one whose lesson plan has devolved to “Please leave mommy alone for a moment for a little cry,” and “Oh, no, don’t drink the ‘juice’ out of mommy’s glass.” Not so easy now, is it? And get this: You even love your children! Imagine if you had to deal with these monsters without the requisite emotional connection. Now, don’t you think teachers should be paid more?

That you can’t self-quarantine on Discovery Island. Who wouldn’t want to ride

out quarantine in an exotic tropical paradise, in your own backyard no less? In late April, Richard Maguire decided he was going to live his best “shelter in place” life and ride out the coronavirus on the abandoned Discovery Island on Disney property. But his paradise was lost in less than a week when he was apprehended by Orange County Police and charged CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

with trespassing. He claimed he didn’t know he was trespassing. Most magical place on Earth, amirite?

That the “Reopen” protests are not a spontaneous, grass-roots movement.

Nationwide, protests have erupted against governors’ stay-at-home orders, arguing they’re excessively hurting the economy. But this is no populist uprising – it’s an Astroturf campaign funded by Big Money right-wing agitators like the billionaire Koch and DeVos families to make the working class get back to work (for the billionaires). And it’s funny how when Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the National Anthem to protest police brutality he was a traitor, but when a bunch of white guys storm the Michigan capitol with assault rifles they’re patriots. Hmmm.

That there’s a chance they make getting unemployment a bureaucratic nightmare on purpose (insert shocked face). That love conquers corona. Some weddings have been rescheduled, others have been held in creative and intimate ways.

How to grieve from a distance. If you

know, you know. We’re sorry.

The term “Cuomo-sexual.” Thank you for the Cuomo Brothers memes, internet.

That staying “safe at home” isn’t always safe. Especially for victims of domestic

violence or children who are suffering from abuse.

That essential workers are heroes.

Delivery drivers are heroes. Mail-delivery people are heroes. Grocery store employees are heroes. Nurses are heroes. Transit workers are heroes. Frontline workers are heroes. Any essential employee that has continued to go to work to make America move when the rest of us were afraid or hunkered down in our homes is a hero. Thank you.

That every essential worker deserves access to personal protective equipment. Period. Full stop. No further

discussion necessary.

That somehow, nitrile gloves don’t biodegrade when left on the ground outside of the grocery store. Weird, right? This is what our dogs and cats feel like cooped up in the house all the time. The true benefit of outdoor activity.

Whether it be backyard gardening, a walk with your dog or a solo hike, we’ve never appreciated our “outside time” more.

How to exercise with wine bottles instead of weights. Or a dictionary, a jug of

bleach, a cinder block you found in the backyard …

That apparently we should stop our longtime practice of drinking bleach as a health cure, if all of these memes making fun of the president are to be believed. That many couples are learning they can’t stand to be around the people they love even one second longer. But

many single people think they should shut the hell up.

That doctors and scientists don’t know anything; the only real doctor is Dr. YouTube. Never mind what infectious disease specialists and medical professionals have to say about the matter: Your cousin who never graduated from high school just shared a video from YouTube saying that curing the coronavirus is as simple as eating a shitload of cotton balls or similarly absorbent material in order to “soak up” the disease, and also that the virus isn’t a big deal in the first place since in one month it’s only killed just barely less than the number of people the flu typically kills in an entire year. You are all just stupid sheep! Now hold still; we need to shave off your fleece and eat it.

That blocking access to hospitals for a protest is OK but only if you really need a haircut. Blocking roadways during a protest

That we can learn a lot from the elderly.

They’ve been through it all, and they know how to survive it all. Now that everybody is turning to the old ways – baking bread and planting gardens – we realize we don’t know a gosh-darned thing about survival. If you don’t have access to a full set of the Foxfire books, the best advice you can find is from older humans. They’ve survived violent flu seasons and multiple depressions and terrible natural disasters. Not only can they teach you how to cope, they can also tell you where to plant tomatoes in your yard for the highest yield. (Where there is full sun and warm soil.)

That we can learn a lot from people with disabilities. Don’t know where to find (usu-

ally common) medical supplies like masks, or need tips on how to stay at home for months alone without losing your mind? Call up that friend that you rarely see because of their disability. Chances are that while you were out visiting all of the bars and dropping in on multiple grocery stores, they were at home getting their groceries delivered and learning how to ration their alcohol supplies. People with disabilities have to adapt constantly, so their coping and problem-solving skills are usually top-notch.

That we can learn a lot from people who are sober. Right now we are *all* learning

to take it one day at a time. We’re also learning to solve our own problems instead of letting them fester, and learning that there are many problems we just have to accept. Sober people already knew all of this.

against police abuse of power among minority communities? “How dare you! Can you imagine the lives you have put at risk? What if an ambulance tried to get through? Somebody should really run over these people with a car.” Literally blocking the entrance to a hospital during a pandemic because you can’t go get your nails done? “We are patriots! Give me beauty salon or give me death! George Washington would have never infringed on my right to get my roots touched up!” In conclusion: Get bent, and go get an essential job, you lazy slackers.

Los Angeles had some of the cleanest air of any major city in the world in April, and jellyfish were seen swimming in the nearly clear canals of Venice. Although temporary (pollution will rebound when the global economy restarts), the near immediate impact is a nice reminder of the power humans have over the environment – for both good and bad – especially with the recent 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

ations like this have a way of making unimportant things disappear. In times of crisis, we often find out who we can really turn to in life, and sometimes you find out that the most reliable people in your life are family, if you are lucky enough to have access to them. You might not always agree with them on politics or other topics, but when you are sweating out a fever and desperate for a Tylenol delivery, it’s often your family who will step in and save you.

to your last $20. Maybe it feels like your walls are closing in on you, and you’re totally freaking out. In these (and all other) situations, having good friends is invaluable. They’d do for you what you’d do for them, and you can watch out for each other. So many people don’t have this. If you do, count your blessings.

What a stay at home order means for those experiencing homelessness. While

individuals experiencing homelessness were exempt from Orange County’s stay-at-home order, area nonprofits and social service providers weren’t equipped to accommodate social distancing protocols. This meant advocacy groups who normally distribute supplies or send health care workers to visit encamp-

ments had to halt their efforts, and shelters have had to close intake. Commissioner Bakari Burns, newly elected to District 6 and still CEO of the Healthcare Center for the Homeless, has worked to get COVID tests to the homeless, but toilet paper and hand sanitizer, two of the things the homeless population need most, are still tough to come by in quantity.

That many people can successfully work from home in many industries.

Also, it’s now clear that a lot of people’s managers do not trust them to do so at all.

That we could – and should – scrap cash bail. Pesky social justice types have for years argued

it’s not fair to keep poor people locked up because they can’t afford a bondsman while people with more money get to bail out and await trial at home. Such reasoning has traditionally been ignored, but the threat of outbreaks in jails has made more prosecutors and judges willing to rethink blindly stuffing jails with people who could just as easily be let loose – if they had the money to buy their freedom. Bail reform advocates around the country have been frantically raising money to cover bail for inmates, rather than leaving them trapped in a confined space with hundreds of others. And while it’s hard to argue that large swaths of our world are not falling apart these days, it’s not because a bunch of people who haven’t been convicted of anything get to shelter in place with their families.

That if you’re making your own hand sanitizer out of liquor at home, the CDC recommends using at least 60 percent alcohol spirits. So it is hereby deemed safe,

healthy and wise to keep a lot of Everclear and Bacardi 151 on hand. You know, for emergencies.

That washing your hands several times per day results in scaly dinosaur hands. We don’t have a fix for this one, sorry.

That even “I’m not much of a hugger”types are starved for hugs. So much for the spring music festival season. We missed you, Okeechobee, Rolling Loud, Ultra, Rockville. Fingers crossed, EDC and Fest.

That Ticketmaster might put profits above good customer service.

Ticketmaster found itself in hot water after the company quietly amended its refund policy to no longer offer full refunds for postponed or rescheduled events, only refunding those that had been formally canceled. After an outcry, Ticketmaster’s president Jared Smith said the company “intends to refund as many tickets as possible in as timely a fashion as is feasible.” Once a postponed event announces a new date, ticket-holders will then be notified via email, at which point they can begin the refund process. Upon receiving the notification, ticket-holders will have just 30 days to request a refund – otherwise the ticket will be applied to the

rescheduled date. Their plan appears to have a catch, however: Artists whose tours have been postponed, like Billie Eilish and Elton John, have not pulled the plug nor scheduled make-up dates – making those shows potentially ineligible for Ticketmaster’s refund. Luckily, in Florida, the state constitution guarantees refunds, though there’s nothing in there about making it easy.

That even the (state) government agrees that marijuana is essential, finally catching up to what the most stoned among us have known for decades. Most

states – including Florida –have allowed their medical marijuana dispensaries to continue to operate during the pandemic, which makes sense: For many, pot is a medicine that reduces anxiety and alleviates pain. So if we can’t go on a real trip any time soon, we can least go on a mental one.

How much porn is too much porn. In

quarantine, there is no right answer.

What the inside of every late night show host’s house looks like. Jimmy Fallon has a slide!

That we didn’t deserve John Prine, Lee Konitz or Little Richard, and we didn’t appreciate them enough when they were still here. That meat thermometers can also be human thermometers. When we all started

freaking out about taking our temperatures, we learned something: America was basically out of thermometers. And the ones you could get were selling online for a huge markup. But – life hack – turns out you can stick a meat thermometer under your tongue to take your temperature. Do not stick a meat thermometer into your skin. You probably can, but it would not be comfortable.

That social distancing is a human right.

By May 1, 293 inmates and 151 prison workers had tested positive for COVID-19 in Florida’s correctional facilities. Just 680 of the state’s roughly 94,000 inmates had been tested for COVID-19, and 48 percent were positive. At that same point in time, 404,467 people statewide had been tested, and less than 9 percent of the tests were positive. It’s clear that inmates’ 8th Amendment right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment is being violated, and it’s also clear that the correctional officers designated “essential workers” are, like so many others on the front lines, being neglected and poorly served by their management.

That the coronavirus has had a disproportionate impact on communities of color. Black people make up 16 percent of Florida’s population, but account for 23 percent of COVID-19 cases. Twenty-six percent of the state’s population is Latinx, but Latinx patients make up 42 percent

of cases. Generations of discriminatory housing and economic practices have trapped many POC in economically depressed neighborhoods, where residents are far more likely to have pre-existing health conditions like diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity. And a disproportionate number of lower-income residents also work in the service industry, where employees are in close contact with the public.

That everyone we know will grow lockdown beards, or will experiment with new hairstyles. Hello, quarantine mullet. That an inflatable shark/dinosaur/ unicorn suit will not keep you from contracting COVID-19. We asked a scientist. She said no.

That local restaurants, chefs and foodies will step up to support those in need. From 4 Rivers BBQ founder John Rivers’ Feed the Need Foundation that’s serving up free meals to the Central Florida arts community, to local musician and barbecue master Clay Watson handing out free sandwiches fresh off the grill to unemployed friends and neighbors … from Taste of Haiti festival organizers cooking up and giving away 400 meals to essential workers, to Farm to Trunk distributing fresh produce for free to entertainment and hospitality workers and single mothers … there’s a lot of good people stepping up where our social safety net has failed.

That when you can’t go hunt Easter eggs, the Easter Bunny will come to you. Winter Park’s 65-year-old tradition of an egg

hunt in Central Park was transformed almost overnight into three mini-parades, with the Easter Bunny being chauffeured around, waving to kiddies while safely distanced.

That marquees make great platforms for public announcements and encouragement. Whether it was the Beacham offering

a heartfelt, “Tough times never last, tough people do #alonetogether,” Broadway Methodist Church’s eyeopening “We are praying & listening to the scientists” or Stardust Video and Coffee’s more wistful and existential “Grand reopening someday,” local signs and marquees expressed a whole lot more than coming attractions or daily drink specials.

That you don’t have to be productive during quarantine. Sometimes it’s enough to

just focus on taking care of yourself.

That we miss our furloughed colleagues dearly. This feature was a collaborative effort between four Euclid Media Group newspapers: Cincinnati’s CityBeat, Detroit’s Metro Times, St. Louis’ Riverfront Times and Orlando Weekly.

Last week’s deluge of terrible news wasn’t enough to drown out Walt Disney World’s reopening plan SOON! (PHOTO BY DENIS ADRIANA MACIAS / CREATIVE COMMONS LICENSE)

Coronavirus has claimed over

100,000 American lives, the economy is crumbling, protests against racist police violence have erupted across the country and President Nero is dog-whistling “Horst-Wessel-Lied” while civil society smolders. Under the circumstances, focusing on the Happiest Place on Earth seems tone-deaf at best, sociopathic at worst. But last week’s deluge of despair wasn’t enough to drown out Walt Disney World’s May 27 presentation to the Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force of plans for a phased reopening of its Orlando theme parks. Amusement rides are the furthest thing from most of our minds at this moment, but Disney’s postquarantine comeback is crucial to Central Florida’s future, and nobody needs to hear another well-meaning white man’s wisdom on racial justice (BLM, BTW). So I’m taking a brief break from the nightmarish news to inspect how well my recent “expert” predictions regarding Walt Disney World’s reopening stack up against the Mouse’s officially released proposal. In my May 8 edition of Live Active Cultures I imagined a COVID-era Orlando vacation, beginning with an educated guesstimate that the theme parks would reopen between Memorial Day and the 4th of July. I’m giving myself partial credit for this answer, as Universal Orlando and SeaWorld are both resuming operations this week, while Walt Disney World’s parks remain closed to the public until July 11. However, guests will begin returning to Disney Vacation Club hotels on June 22 and could receive sneak previews of the parks. As I suggested, several WDW hotels will remain shuttered for the time being and new room reservations are currently suspended; those who do visit will enjoy contact-free check-

in services and enhanced room-cleaning procedures. I guessed correctly that Disney’s four parks wouldn’t all reopen simultaneously, and that Magic Kingdom would be part of the first wave (along with Animal Kingdom), but I’m a bit surprised that Epcot will reopen with Hollywood Studios only four days later on July 14. Look for World Showcase’s cultural pavilions to be staffed with ethnically incongruous locals until international employees can return. I was also accurate about Disney implementing touch-free forehead thermometer checks for arriving guests, but I didn’t anticipate that face masks would be mandatory instead of optional for all guests age 2 and older. Then again, if the enforcement rate inside the parks resembles that seen thus far at Disney Springs, this “rule” will prove to be merely an enthusiastic suggestion. My theory that park ticket sales would be suspended proved spot-on, and those already holding admission (including annual passholders) will have to compete over a limited number of advance reservations before entering Disney’s parks on a particular day. While daily park attendance will initially be restricted to a fraction of the usual head count, the hourly capacity on rides and attractions will also be constrained, since unrelated parties will no longer be seated next to each other. As expected, social distancing will be promoted around the parks with spacing markers on the pavement, and hand sanitizing stations will be easily accessible. Mobile ordering, single-use menus and tap-to-pay transactions will be the order of the day in restaurants, which recently canceled all existing dining plans and table bookings and reduced their reservation windows from 180 days to 60. Sadly, I was also accurate in calling that

Disney’s famous fireworks and parades would be put on hiatus in order to minimize crowds on Main Street U.S.A. But some of the cuts will be even more draconian than my worst-case scenario: Playgrounds, meet-and-greets and character dining – cornerstones of Disney’s family-focused parks – will all be unavailable, although you may spot Mickey and friends waving hello from a safe distance. What I thought was my safest prediction – that Disney would double down on FastPass+ and other virtual queuing schemes to minimize guests standing in lines – turned out to be my biggest miss. Instead, thousands of sought-after reservations to ride Flight of Passage and other E-Tickets have been erased, and the entire FastPass+ service has been suspended until further notice along with the Extra Magic Hours program, eliminating two major perks of stay at Disney’s on-site resorts. Freezing FastPass+ will certainly help keep standby lines flowing more efficiently, but without any sort of timed return option (such as the Virtual Line reservations Universal is adding to many of its attractions) it’s easy to imagine certain areas, like Fantasyland, becoming as congested with extended outdoor queues as they were during any pre-virus peak period. By the time you read this, Universal Orlando will be putting into practice many of the plans Disney has proposed in theory. I’ll return next week with a report from the first morning of their reopening previews for annual passholders, and let you know how the Wizarding World of Harry Potter has weathered the quarantine. It won’t be the first time in recent years that Mickey has sat back and carefully watched what its upstart neighbor was doing, but it may end up being the most important. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

THE BEAT GOES ON Tabla’s Park Avenue outpost brings Indian fare of a higher level to Winter Park BY FAIYAZ KARA

I

had a craving for pani puri. The last time puri; spooning in the potato-chickpea mash; I indulged in this most Indian of street splashing the tangy-sweet pani into the void staples was at Chaat House on South – each one of those actions raised the level of OBT, and it did the job. This time, I dashed comfort to a point that Chaat House’s rendioff to a place much closer to me – Tabla in tion couldn’t quite attain. Street to swank, Winter Park. I always liked Tabla, from the Prem proves he’s a deft hand in the kitchen. time I reviewed the Universal-area original You won’t find tandoori lamb chops ($32) back in 2008 to when they brought on chef that are plusher, or lamb seekh kebabs ($18) Ian Piamonte to add Chinese and Thai dishes with more flavor. No overdone edges on those to the menu in 2015. Piamonte has since left, succulent cylinders, either. His palak ghosht but the one constant through the years has ($19) with bone-in chunks of goat cooked in been chef Sajan Prem. Even when Shabber braised spinach and a redolent masala had Chowdhury ran the kitchen back in those my head wobbling like Russell Peters: “Too early days, it was Prem’s food that impressed good. Tooooo good!” I blurted to myself in – I know because Chowdhury was never in my suddenly cardamom-, garlic- and clovescented kitchen. And once the kitchen on any of my again, after ripping a shred early visits. No, Prem’s the TABLA WINTER PARK of garlic-chili naan ($5) one who made Tabla the 216 N. Park Ave., Winter Park to scoop the thick, ruddy brand it is today, though 321-422-0321 sauce: “Mind-blasting!” he’s quick to laud owner tablacuisine.com There’s potential for Nora Jain for divulg$$$ Tabla to become our ing many of her cooking very own Gymkhana, secrets to him. Recently, Prem’s been spending most of his time at the Brigadiers or Junoon, and Prem is inching Park Avenue outpost. It’s a handsome space, us closer and closer. But he’s moving laterally this nook inside the Shops on Park, always as well by catering to vegetarians, as well as has been – only now it’s got a restaurant that’s Jains, who adhere to an extra-strict vegetarnot just worthy of its allure, but also serves ian diet – onions, potatoes, garlic, carrots or the best Indian food in the city. And don’t let any other foods uprooted from the ground are forbidden. Prem even serves besan chilla anyone tell you otherwise. Cracking the shells of those delicate fried ($14.99), a savory crepe made from gram flour

served with a potato curry, raita, mango pickle and rice pudding. I’ve never seen it offered at any Indian restaurant before now. If you’re into bánh xèo or okonomiyaki or, um, savory crepes, give these a try. They’re a fixture during India’s rainy season and should be during ours. On the other hand, aloo paratha ($5) – served with many of those same sides as well as some chutneys – is great any time of year. Though they’re never my first choice, Chinese and Thai options are also offered. If you have to have the General Tso’s chicken ($16) for lunch, upgrade to the side of IndoChinese fried rice ($16). It’s battle-tested. And if there’s one dish that deserves to be attacked, and attacked with ravenous vigor, it’s Prem’s sticky toffee pudding ($7.99). It comes with a house-made chai latte ice cream that’s worth fighting your conscience for. I should mention that while the dining room looked incredibly fetching, I’m not quite ready to make the jump to in-restaurant dining. That said, all my pickups have gone very smoothly, with courteous hosts wearing masks and gloves. Plus they’re running some takeaway specials – spend $20 and get 10 percent off; spend $50 and get 20 percent off. They even throw in complimentary desserts like gulab jamun and ras malai. At Tabla, that’s just called drumming up business.

Chelsie Savage wasn’t one to wallow when COVID19 plunged the restaurant industry into a sea of uncertainty. Instead, she sprang into action by reinventing her business and launching the Real Damn Good Food Virtual Farmers Market (realdamngoodfood.com), an online ordering portal where consumers can purchase produce and foodstuffs from local farmers and purveyors, as well as meals from her restaurants, Sanctum Café and Proper & Wild. I’d availed myself of everything from heirloom tomatoes to broccolini to eggs to chai from the site when, last week, she posted a photo of a margherita pizza on Instagram that was, well, savage. I picked one up from Proper & Wild and marveled at the blistering and charring courtesy of the Mugnaini oven, not to mention the fresh basil and mozzarella. Savage says the quarantine afforded her some time to experiment with dough fermentation, and let’s just say she’s definitely got the hang of it. Her margherita rivals the best Neapolitan pies in town, plus it can be made vegan by switching the mozz out for cashew ricotta. That day I also picked up a “heartcake” sandwich; I could probably eat one every day for lunch and not tire of it. Stuffed between toasted buns are griddled hearts of palm, a nori-lemon emulsion, cabbage slaw and arugula. Yep: Real. Damn. Good. Food.

Mélissa Bédard, Ève Landry and Florence Longpré in Can You Hear Me? PHOTO COURTESY NETFLIX

BY STEVE SCHNEIDER

PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: Spelling the Dream – Why do so many champion spellers happen to be IndianAmerican? We’ll find out in this original documentary, which profiles four promising competitors between the ages of 7 and 14 as they prepare for the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee. Can’t wait to see them pwn those drips from Putnam County! (Netflix)

PREMIERES THURSDAY: Can You Hear Me? Season 1 – Experience the trials and tribulations of three young Canadian women of modest means in an acclaimed series that’s already racked up the honors back home, including the Gémeaux and Banff Rockie Awards. I’m not kidding, those are real things. Think the statues are made from tree sap or something. (Netflix)

PREMIERES FRIDAY: 13 Reasons Why: Season 4 – A number of viewers found this series adaptation of the Jay Asher novel about teen suicide to be a bit too much – and that was before the coronavirus made most of the known world lock its own medicine cabinet. But if you’ve stuck it out this far, you’re eager to find out which characters will survive the show’s final season. Honestly, I haven’t seen so much furious wagering over which teenagers will live and which teenagers will die since Orange County outlawed raves. (Netflix) Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava – For her third stand-up special, Brillon comes to Amazon Prime bearing a wealth of shoot-from-the-hip opinions the service says will shock you. Like what? Well, from the trailer, we already know

she has a negative view of dating apps. Man, if she keeps slaughtering sacred cows like that, this country is never going to have to worry about the beef shortage Publix keeps warning us about. (Amazon Prime) The Last Days of American Crime – A 2009 graphic novel becomes a 2020 caper flick starring Édgar Ramírez as a hoodlum who’s trying to pull off one last heist before a government mind-control program eliminates crime forever. Damn, Uncle Sam, at least let us keep loitering! (Netflix) Queer Eye: Season 5 – The gang is back to help us clueless straights pull our visual presentation together. You know, so we can go right back to sheltering in place with everybody who already knows we’re a slob. (Netflix) Shirley – Elisabeth Moss plays Shirley Jackson in this Sundance 2020 hit, which shows the acclaimed author of The Haunting of Hill House and “The Lottery” using an unsuspecting young couple as research fodder for her next book. Hint: You wanna take a pass when she asks “So, who wants to get stoned?” (Hulu) We Are Freestyle Love Supreme – From producer Lin-Manuel Miranda comes a documentary about the 15-year genesis of his titular hip-hop improv group. It’s like Hamilton for people who can’t afford Disney+! (Hulu)

PREMIERES SUNDAY: I May Destroy You – In the series premiere, actor/writer/co-director Michaela Coel turns her own experience as an assault survivor into a drama series that IndieWire says will “challenge everything we thought we knew about dating and sex.” What if I just admit I didn’t know anything to begin with? PICTURES OF YOU Even a pandemic can’t stop Orlando music photographer Jim Leatherman from doing what he does best BY MATTHEW MOYER

ORLANDO WEEKLY ● JUNE 3-9, 2020 ● orlandoweekly.com

P

hotographer Jim Leatherman has been shooting concerts in Orlando for decades now, capturing iconic snaps of everyone from R.E.M. to Björk, to say nothing of his extensive archive of local acts. When we saw that Leatherman was documenting the action inperson during the recent series of Will’s Pub livestream shows – you wouldn’t know from watching them online, that’s how stealthy he is – we had to find out more. What made you decide to pick up the camera again and document this series of shows? I saw the Facebook event for the Golden Pelicans playing live at Will’s but streaming on Facebook. I really wanted to document this show because Rich Evans was going to be leaving Orlando, moving away to Portland. I was bummed Rich was leaving town – he has been a fixture in the Orlando music scene for a long time. I’ve been buds with him for something like 18 years. Will [Walker] was cool with me being there, very welcoming, as he always has been to me. He’s one of this town’s real treasures. I got there early enough to shoot a quick portrait of the band before the start of the broadcast. I wore a mask the whole night and during the show and made sure to stay back behind the video cameras. I read that the next Friday would be the Ludes. I am an old friend and longtime fan of all three of those guys. I said, “Man, I would really love to shoot that one too!” So I reached out to Jeff Nolan, and he said that would be great. It went from there …

P

The Golden Pelicans

Could you talk about your new methodology for shooting these? Will’s is probably my favorite place to take photos of musicians. Right up front next to the stage, you are pretty much always going to get some good pics. It has spoiled me for all other venues. With these Friday live internet gigs, I am shooting the opposite of how I normally shoot shows. I am in the middle or towards the back of the room, using a telephoto lens and a tripod, something I would never do if there was an audience in the room. I don’t like to be in anyone’s way or draw any attention to myself. Are there any moments that stand out for you that came close to capturing the spontaneity of a full-audience show? Orlando is so rich with talented musicians and amazing bands – I hope that this series will continue and showcase more of the good things we have. I am so honored to have been allowed to shoot these intimate events; it isn’t lost on me how special these nights are. I have loved seeing the creative ideas, like the cool Orlando-themed video at the start of the Ludes and those amazing fire effect lights in the front of the stage. The Golden Pelicans with the awesome plaster statues on the edge of the stage: a monkey, pig and of course a pelican! The Sh-Booms with their totally photogenic video screen backdrop – and front-drop too – made it really easy to shoot some great stills. music@orlandoweekly.com The Ludes orlandoweekly.com

I’m a 32-year-old gay man and I have trouble staying out of my head during sex. Everything works fine when I’m single or “available” – let’s be honest: I’m a slut and I enjoy it. But when I invest in someone, the sex suffers. With a partner I care about I feel nervous. I feel small both mentally and physically. And I worry my dick is small. I’ve measured and photographed it, so I know better, but something in me is always asking … are you really enough? I’m currently in an open relationship with a guy I’ve known for a decade. He’s amazing. Often I’m hard AF just sitting there relaxing with him. But the closer we get to actually having sex, the more nervous I become. I even stop breathing consistently. It’s almost like I feel ashamed to want someone so much or something? It’s frustrating because I would love nothing more than to fuck like rabbits. I love him and I want to be able to please him sexually! Our intimacy, our conversation, our connection – everything else is so strong. But I feel like my problem will kill any future I might have with him. He hasn’t really expressed a concern, but I worry. I have considered the idea of therapy, but the idea of talking to some stranger about my sex life face-to-face is daunting. So what do I do? My other thought is to just blindfold him and say bottoms up. Dazed In Love So you don’t wanna talk with a therapist about your issues – which touch on more than just sex – but you’re willing to talk to me and all of my readers about them. I realize it’s a little different, DIL, as you don’t have to look me in the eye while we discuss your dick. But there are therapists who specialize in helping people work through their issues around sex and they’re usually pretty good at setting nervous new clients at ease – they have to be. So I would encourage you to have a few sessions with a sex-positive queer shrink. Talking about your dick with a stranger will be awkward at first, of course, but just like eating ass, DIL, the more you do it, the less awkward it gets – and after a few sessions, your therapist won’t be a stranger anymore. (To find a sex-positive/poly-positive sex therapist, head over to the website of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists: aasect.org.) In the meantime, DIL, go ahead and blindfold your boyfriend – if he’s game, of course, and I can’t imagine he wouldn’t be. You seem to have an irrational fear of being seen. If your boyfriend were to get a good look at you naked, DIL, especially if he got a good look at your dick, you’re convinced

ORLANDO WEEKLY ● JUNE 3-9, 2020 ● orlandoweekly.com

he would suddenly conclude – even though he’s known you for a decade and is obviously into you – that you’re not “enough” for him. So don’t let him get a good look. Blindfold that boy. Don’t lie to him about why you want to blindfold him – tell him you feel a little insecure – but bringing in a blindfold makes working through your insecurities into a sexy game. Who knows? After a few hot sex sessions with your sensory-deprived boyfriend (or a few dozen), your confidence may get the boost it needs and you won’t feel so insecure about your cock or anything else. And even if your dick was small – which it isn’t, DIL, and you’ve got the measurements and photos to prove it – you could still have great sex with your boyfriend. Guys with dicks of all sizes, even guys without dicks, can have great sex. And if you’re still nervous after blindfolding the boyfriend and worried you’ll go soft, DIL, you can take the pressure off by enjoying sex acts and play that don’t require you to be hard. You can bottom for him, you can blow him, you can use toys on his ass, you can sit on his face while he jacks off, etc. There’s a lot you can do without your dick. Zooming out, DIL, intimacy and hot sex are often negatively correlated – meaning, the more intimate a relationship becomes, the less hot the sex gets. Anyone who’s watched more than one American sitcom has heard a million jokes about this sad fact. People in sexually exclusive relationships who still want hot sex to be a part of their lives have to work at solving this problem with their partners. But if you’re in an open relationship and can get sex elsewhere, well, then you can have love and intimacy and pretty good sex with your partner and adventures and novelty and crazy hot sex with other people. Ideally, of course, a person in an open relationship wants – and it is possible for a person in an open relationship to have – hot sex with their committed partner as well as their other partners. But some people can’t make it work, DIL. However hard they try, some people can’t have uninhibited or un-self-conscious sex with a long-term partner. The more invested they are in someone, the higher the stakes are, the longer they’re together, etc., the less arousing sex is for them. Most of the people with this problem are in monogamous relationships and, judging from the jokes on sitcoms, they’re utterly (but hilariously) miserable. You’re not in a monogamous relationship, DIL, so if it turns out you’re incapable of having great sex with a committed partner – if you can’t man-

age to integrate those things – you don’t have to go without great sex. You can have intimacy at home and great sex elsewhere. But it’s a double-edged sword, DIL, because if you can get hot sex elsewhere, you may not be motivated to do the work that would make it possible for you to have great sex with your partner and others. I’ve been with my boyfriend for three years. I’m a 27-year-old woman and this was my first “real” relationship. Before I met my boyfriend, I would have considered myself a steady dick-jumper; I went flitting from guy to guy. On paper, our relationship seemed great. He tries to make sure I have what I need, whether it’s a meal, a TV show, a record to play. He is stable and affectionate; most of all, he wanted to be with me. But he’s boring. When I talk to him, I want to be somewhere, anywhere else. The more I tried to engage with him, the more obvious our lack of any deep connection seemed. He is stoic and unemotional whereas I cry during car commercials. I’m desperately seeking an emotional equal. Every day I go back and forth between loving where we are and wanting to run the fuck away. I have a tendency to do the latter – with guys, friends, jobs – so I don’t know what I REALLY want. But I feel so incredibly unfulfilled. We have a lackluster sex life and I feel more like his roommate the past year than his girlfriend. I want to be inspired by my partner. My question is … actually, I’m not really sure I have a question. First Relationship Fizzle Since you didn’t ask a question, FRF, I guess you don’t require an answer. So I’ll make an observation instead: you repeatedly refer to this relationship in the past tense. (“this was my first ‘real’ relationship,” “our relationship seemed great,” “the more I tried.”) So you obviously know what you need to do. Your soon-to-be-ex-boyfriend sounds like a good guy, FRF, and you don’t want to hurt him, which makes dumping him harder. But if he’s not the right guy for you, FRF, you’re not the right woman for him. Go back to flitting – and who knows? Maybe one day you’ll jump on a dick that’s attached to a guy you who inspires you. Or maybe you don’t want one guy – forever or for long. Some people are happier flitting than settling. Join me for my first-ever Savage Lovecast Livestream Thursday, June 4, at 7 p.m. PST. I’ll answer as many of your questions as I can, all from the comfort of your computer. Tickets are at savagelovecast.com/events. mail@savagelove.net
