After more than a week of speculation, the GOP announced June 11 that the Republican National Convention would come to Florida in late August – specifically, to Jacksonville – and that social distancing and mask-wearing would not be required. The RNC had been scheduled to take place in North Carolina, but that state refused to guarantee that coronavirus safety requirements would be lifted before the convention. @Chris Simmons Did anyone doubt that Trump and his pet DeSantis would get this moved to Florida? The Tangerine Dictator needs to win this state if he wants his reign of divisiveness to last another four years.

@Jasmine Nichol I hope they make it really meaningful and give someone else the nomination. @Shawn Lane Bet they won’t allow guns though … @Verny Rodriguez Meanwhile in New Zealand, the disease has been controlled, and there are no more lockdowns or physical distancing orders. @Christopher Shreve I hope a whole bunch of people in Jax are ready to get stiffed for their services.

@Melissa Romero We can’t get our numbers down and people are still waiting for unemployment, but let’s throw a huge convention and spend millions upon millions of dollars.

@Jes Elizabeth Gonna make the DNC in 1968 look like a church picnic ….

@Ben Pinsky I think every Republican in Florida should get together for a 14-day drunken orgy, as long as they stay away from me for at least a month afterwards.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced plans to reopen Florida schools at “full capacity” this fall, saying, “We’re going to be smart, we’re going to be safe, we’re going to do it step by step. We want schools fully opened in the fall because there is no better way to educate our children than to have that teacher in front of that child.”

@Nelson Manuel It will be festive! Party hardy, get in some hugs, handshakes and group chants! 2 for 1 Coronas! 40 million voters chose Trump. These people elected the No. 1 Looter in the American GOP, Rick Scott, governor twice and then senator. So let them pack into a closed space and breathe in all their hatred of all things which America used to stand for. We’ll see in November how many are well enough to stand for five hours to vote.

@David E. Conley Should be held at Raiford State prison.

@Jon Martins Republicans don’t care, they have already decided it’s acceptable to have a few hundred thousand deaths. Remember this when you vote. @Kelly Kib So one teacher has to keep 20 to

30 kids 6 feet apart and hands washed. This will take up a whole school day! @Isabel Cristina It seems impossible to me that children 4, 5, 6 years old can control themselves and maintain social distance; even more impossible is that in summer they keep their masks on for more than five minutes. @Jett Vincent Bailey Not my kid. I’ve spent 17 years raising him, and I’m not willing to risk his life for DeSantis’ stupid goddamn decisions. Luckily, Florida has a pretty robust virtual schooling system in place. @Sara Cunnard Kinda ironic … ’cause we teach science in school. @Richard Diaz They really want to thin the herd. I wonder whether their kids go to public school. Our children should not be used as economic pawns. @Jossy LaBoissiere-Williams He is doing this because his family is not going to public schools. (Ed. note: The three DeSantis children are aged 3, 2, and 5 months.) @Chassidy H. Goff Am I the only one that’s relieved my child can go to school? Some of us work full time and don’t have the luxury of keeping them home to do virtual learning. In 2018, Floridians voted to restore voting rights to felons who had served their full sentences as part of their return to society. The state’s implementation of the amendment was decried by advocates and overturned by the district courts. The DeSantis administration appealed, lost, and now wants to fast-track their challenge to that decision by asking a full appellate court to consider it before the November elections, in which hundreds of thousands of returning citizens should be able to vote. @Alan B. Borne He’s already packed the full court. He has nothing to lose. @James Mitchell Meanwhile Barr and Trump feel Flynn was railroaded into lying about his meetings he actually had with Russian operatives …. @Linda Brown Wasting taxpayer dollars to deny rights to citizens. How very Republican of him. @Omar Almodovar So … the people vote, and you don’t like the people’s decision. So you want to fight it. The issue does not matter at that point. It’s called a democracy. orlandoweekly.com

BATTLE OF THE BASTARDS A fight no one deserved to win BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N

In the end, they both lost – which was,

all things considered, the best possible outcome. There were no good guys here, only villains of different types, two brands of poison both toxic in their own way, two egos desperate for succor. This week, former National Security Adviser John Bolton, an unreconstructed neocon who’s rarely met a country he didn’t want to bomb, published The Room Where It Happened, the 467th (approximate) insider tellall to emerge from the first three years of the Trump administration. Like the previous 466 (approximate), it paints President Trump as an incompetent, corrupt buffoon with a fondness for autocrats. No surprise there. Bolton being Bolton, the 500-page-plus book also berates the president for not casually murdering a hundred or so Iranians because of a downed drone. (Bolton thinks this anecdote makes Trump look bad.) More important for our purposes, it spotlights conduct that falls somewhere between embarrassing and impeachable. For instance, Bolton says that in personal conversations, Trump made the quid pro quo with Ukraine, for which he was impeached, explicit: “He said he wasn’t in favor of sending [the Ukrainians] anything until all Russia-investigation material related to [Hillary] Clinton and [Joe] Biden had been turned over.” Trump similarly asked China’s President Xi to help him get re-elected by purchasing American wheat and soybeans, then told Xi to move forward with plans to intern Uighur Muslims in concentration camps; those camps now hold at least 1 million people. Perhaps most bizarrely, Bolton says Trump’s jaw-dropping defense of the Saudi crown prince in the wake of his murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi – “The world is a very dangerous place!” – was a calculated move to deflect attention from his daughter Ivanka’s use of her personal email account to conduct government business, à la Hillary Clinton, which he apparently considered a more urgent problem. Of course, Bolton, who left last September, knew all of this as the impeachment inquiry was ramping up but said nothing. House Democrats asked him to testify. Bolton refused and said he would sue to block a subpoena. With nuggets from his manuscript opportunistically leaking,

OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE PHOTO BY TIA DUFOUR / PUBLIC DOMAIN

Bolton said he would testify if the Senate subpoenaed him. But Republicans, having sworn unwavering fidelity to Dear Leader, weren’t interested. In a Machiavellian sense, this might have been a good strategy: tease just enough to secure membership in the #Resistance Bestsellers Book Club. For a man who portrays himself as a paragon of patriotic virtue, however, it was transparently craven. And because the other guys are even more unscrupulous, it backfired. Manuscripts from government officials have to undergo a review to ensure they’re not divulging state secrets, a process that gives the White House leverage to delay or even block their release. That’s what Trump plainly wanted: In February, the president boasted to TV anchors that The Room Where It Happened wouldn’t be published during his presidency. Over the first four months of 2020, Bolton worked with career National Security Council staffers to revise manuscript several times. Finally, on April 27, he was told the manuscript no longer contained classified material. But the White House never sent a letter formally clearing the manuscript for publication. For the next six weeks, there was radio silence. The political operatives had taken over. The new national security adviser had a deputy dig through it again, and what do you know: On June 8, Bolton was told it still contained classified material – some of which, conveniently, became classified after April 27. By this point, however, Bolton had tired of being jerked

around. He’d submitted the final version to Simon & Schuster, which printed 200,000 copies and shipped them all over the world ahead of a June 23 release. So last week, Trump’s Department of Justice sued, seeking a restraining order to halt the book’s release – an extraordinary request in brazen defiance of First Amendment principles. “The Government … asks this Court to issue a prior restraint order suppressing the speech of his former National Security Adviser,” Bolton’s lawyers argued, “… for the transparent purpose of preventing Ambassador Bolton from revealing embarrassing facts about the President’s conduct in office.” That’s obviously correct, but more important were the logistics. The book was already out in the wild – at bookstores, circulating among journalists, even online. There was no putting the toothpaste back in the tube. The White House’s authoritarian effort to quash unfriendly speech about the president failed. But Bolton didn’t exactly win. While the judge denied the restraining order, he also ruled that Bolton’s manuscript does, in fact, contain classified information, which means the government can come after Bolton’s reported $2 million advance and/or press criminal charges. Judging by Trump’s immediate reaction, that seems like a strong possibility: “Bolton broke the law and has been called out and rebuked for so doing, with a really big price to pay. He likes dropping bombs on people, and killing them. Now he will have bombs dropped on him!” So the book gets released, the president’s corruption gets exposed yet again, and the warmonger not only fails to profit but perhaps goes to prison: Honestly, what’s not to like?

SUMMER GUIDE How to salvage the season This was not the summer we asked for, but it’s the one we got. Instead of bitching about missed afternoons at the springs or the parks or your canceled trips to three-day music festivals, it’s time to make plans for what you can do to squeeze a little enjoyment out of this hellscape of a year. To help, we’ve put together a bunch of tips, including how to build your own backyard paradise, fix up that rusty bike and make a two-ingredient cocktail appropriate for 2020. The goal is to reclaim a little space for yourself. We’re all dealing with a lot: Your job, if you are lucky enough to still have it, is most likely a nightmare version of what it was before, a pandemic continues to rip through the country and the United States seems like it’s finally headed for a reckoning on inequality that is fiery and messy and long overdue. There is work to be done, but don’t underestimate the weight of it all. Find a way to do something fun, even if it’s just a pass or two through a sprinkler on a hot afternoon. Summer isn’t canceled – it’s just not what we expected. ILLUSTRATION BY NOAH MCMILLAN

Protest!

Most of this list is about relaxing and relieving stress, but this country is in a rare moment when the masses can actually force the powers that be to revamp or dump and replace some terrible systems. Not everyone can march in the streets, but thousands in Orlando and hundreds of thousands across the nation are taking a calculated risk to show up en masse and demand change. They see staying silent as even more dangerous in the long term than the coronavirus. If you join them, wear a mask, do what you can to protect yourself and others, and keep your eyes on making the United States a better, more just country for everyone.

Build up your garden.

If you’re lucky enough to have a little bit of land to call your own, this is the summer to start a garden or get one set up for next year. Now that we’re all slowing down a bit and taking the time to appreciate where and how we get food, there’s no greater feeling than planting a seed, tending to it and then later pulling your own homegrown food out of the ground. Lettuce, herbs and root vegetables are all pretty easy to grow, making them the perfect items to start in your brand-new garden.

Learn how to build a fire.

This is a great skill to have not just for a low-key backyard bonfire but also in case civilization collapses – and let’s face it, that feels more and more like a possibility every day. OK, first things first is to pick a site that’s far away from trees or your house, because you don’t want to burn your neighborhood down. Lay down some twisted-up newspaper, perhaps old issues of Orlando Weekly – see, we’re good for something – and some tinder, like dry leaves and little twigs. Next, you’ll need kindling – look for skinny dry branches about the length of your forearm – and actual firewood. Make a tepee of kindling around and over the tinder, and then encase that in a tepee made from the bigger logs. Then light the tinder on fire with a lighter or match and – voilà! Be sure to keep water on hand to extinguish it when you’re done.

Build a damn pool

The creeping heat of summer has sneaked up on you, and you’d like to find a little relief in the form of a cool dip in a pool. But you don’t want to swim in the plaguey waters of a communal pool, and tragically, you don’t have your own. If you’re not too concerned about what the neighbors think, good news: You can be floating by Friday. The solution is a backyard hay-bale pool. Affordable and well within a beginner’s skillset, the hay-bale pool can be assembled and filled in an afternoon. Here’s how you do it: Arrange the hay bales (you can buy them at Palmer Feed Store, palmerfeedstore.com) in a rectangle as big as you want: maybe four hay bales long and three wide. (Double-stack them if you want it deeper.) Drape the

bales with heavy-duty plastic sheeting, making sure to leave enough slack to press it against the interior walls and tuck under the exterior edges. Cinch it all together with a rope around the perimeter and fill it with water. Enjoy with an ice-cold PBR and jorts.

hoarding in advance of the second wave of coronavirus. If you’re looking to find a good home for all the stuff you don’t need anymore (without sending it to a landfill), Goodwill and the Mustard Seed (mustardseedfla.org) are both accepting donations – Goodwill even has drive-through “Donation Xpress” lanes.

Go to the beach after dark.

We all want to go dip in the ocean and feel the sun, but it’s simply not safe when there’s a crowd. But the Space Coast beaches have a treat for you if you wait until nightfall, page 27.

Go see a drive-in movie.

Tune up your bike.

Exercise!

No more excuses – you literally have nothing better going on. It’s time for a tune-up. First, give it a good cleaning, using degreaser on the chain and jockey wheels, and checking to make sure your chain is in good shape. Next, pull the brake levers to make sure the brake pads are working, and give the wheels a spin to make sure they aren’t hitting the pads; if it takes a lot of force to make the brakes work, use an Allen key and pull the cable to tighten things up. Flip your bike upside-down and give the wheels a spin, checking for any wobbliness; you can fix this by using a spoke wrench to increase or decrease the tension of the spokes. If you’re really feeling handy, you can even take off your pedals and ball bearings to lube everything up. Make sure all your gears are working, pump up your tires and hit the road.

Movie theaters are closed due to you-know-who, but you can catch a movie from the safety of your car at the drive-in. See more on page 15.

Or drive there with your bike in the back. Either wheeled or on foot, you can bask in nature and fill up your bird book without seeing other humans at the places listed on page 19.

When quarantine started back in March, you thought you were going to come out of it a better person. You had big plans: You were going to read all those books you never even opened, bake sourdough bread and get ripped. But to the surprise of absolutely no one, you accomplished jack shit. All you read is Twitter, all you eat is frozen pizza and all you do is sit on your ass. Look, don’t beat yourself up over it – just staying sane with the modern-day equivalents of the 1918 Spanish Flu, 1929 stock market crash, and the 1968 summer of civil unrest all happening at the same damn time is kind of a tall order. But you should reconsider the not-exercising thing. As we all know but willfully choose to forget, exercise can relieve stress and reduce anxiety. Hell, some people even get high from the release of endorphins after a good workout. Start small, going for a 20-minute jog or doing some crunches, and if summoning the energy is hard for you, consider getting it over with earlier in the day while your energy levels are highest. Trust us, you’ll feel a lot better. Exercise and de-stress your brain, too: Read a book, page 29.

Make a quarantine cocktail.

Befriend a murder of crows.

Now ride that bike to some wideopen spaces.

A unique twist on a mojito or a mai tai would make for a delicious summer beverage, but just to get your creative juices flowing (and your mouth watering), we thought we’d share our favorite homemade cocktail, the “2020-tini.” Step 1: Get a rocks glass and some of your favorite whiskey (anything brown should get the job done). Step 2: Fill that rocks glass up to about 1/8 of an inch from the top. Step 3: Add ice — in order to do this without overflowing, you’ll want to drink enough of the beverage for said ice to fit. It should be noted that ice is optional, though. And you’re done! Pairs best with a second 2020-tini held in your other hand.

Clean out your garage.

Heck, clean out everything. The summer is the perfect time to hide away from the heat and get some serious work done indoors. While you’re stuck at home you might as well make it a space that you don’t mind being stuck in (as much) during this weird time. Cleaning out the stuff you don’t need makes more room for canned goods or flashlights or whatever survival things you’ve been thinking about

As anyone who has seen the 1994 cult classic The Crow can attest, crows are, like, really cool, and good to have around as friends, given that they have the ability to raise you from the dead and also peck out the eyes of your enemies. On top of that, they are intelligent creatures who are able to recognize and remember human faces, and if you feed them, they are even likely to bring you gifts. Shiny rocks, coins and pieces of metal are often the form these gifts take, though if you could somehow convince them that paper money is your jam, you’d have yourself one hell of a racket going. What we’re saying here is: Spread some bird seed on the ground near your home, then start shouting “caw” sounds while rubbing cash all over your body. If the birds find you before the mental-health professionals do, you’re in business. A great place to find those crows? On a graveyard picnic, page 21.

Embrace sprinkler life.

Buy or borrow one. Hook it to a hose. Run back and forth through it like a little kid. Congrats – you made it through another Lockdown Summer day.

ENZIAN-BUNGALOWER POP-UP DRIVE-IN (PHOTO BY JANIE POPE)

CINEMA PArADIsO Drive-in theaters are back, but did they ever really leave? If you’re feeling hesitant or anxious about stepping back into a darkened cinema but you feel even more anxious about staring at movies on a tiny mobile device’s screen, we might just have a good compromise for you. There’s a physically distanced way of seeing movies that’s making a comeback during the pandemic. Everything that’s old is new again, and now it’s the turn of the drive-in movie to stride confidently back into the pop culture spotlight. In the latter part of the 1940s and ’50s, drive-ins were the de rigueur weekend outing for families or dates, though they gradually disappeared over the decades. Now the admirably stubborn holdouts are having a “who’s laughing now” moment, and pop-up drive-in screenings are multiplying. Here are a few in the Central Florida area.

Enzian Theater Pop-Up Drive-In

Maitland’s art-house stalwart Enzian Theater teamed up with bustling local website Bungalower for a pop-up series of drive-in screenings around town. With a DIY sense of adventure – audiovisual frills are few, screenings are usually announced just a week ahead of time, it’s bring your own everything, and the tickets are on a

suggested donation basis – and a heavy helping of 1980s fare – The Princess Bride, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T. so far – the screenings still tend to sell out very quickly.

Mount Dora’s Epic Theatre

Last month, Epic Theatres at Mount Dora launched a drive-in movie series in their parking lot, focusing heavily on silver-screen classics. The Mount Dora location joins other Epic theaters in nearby Clermont and West Volusia in offering drive-in movies, though each sets their own programming. (A recent double feature of the Dark Knight and Birds of Prey was a clever way of reuniting the Joker and Harley Quinn.) Movies are projected on the side of the cineplex, and concession counters inside the theaters are open for business. On June 27 they’ll join 300 other outdoor venues across the country to simulcast a concert by country star Garth Brooks.

Ocala Drive-In

“Don’t call it a comeback/I’ve been here for years.” Clearly LL Cool J wasn’t talking about the Ocala DriveIn, but the sentiment still fits. This drive-in opened

in 1918 and first shut down in 2002, but then against all odds (and market trends) reopened a few years later. When the coronavirus pandemic hit, this defiant drive-in was basically the only theater in the whole country showing first-run movies for a while. Owner John Watzke explained to Vice his business model in a suitably low-key fashion: “That’s the thing about drive-in theaters. You don’t make a lot of money. You can make a good living if you work it right, but you’ve got to have a passion for it.”

Silver Moon Drive-In

Once upon three months ago, driving to Lakeland might have been a bit of a trek to see a movie, but what is time now anyway? The Silver Moon Drive-In has been around since 1948, when admission was 35 cents. Over 70 years later, they’re still bringing the crowds with creative programming taking in first-run films and classics, including recent screenings of Space Jam and Beetlejuice. They shut their doors in April briefly because of the coronavirus, but are back open, doing what they’ve been doing in much the same way for decades.

I CAN SEE FOR MILES Wide open places to visit this summer The key to making it through the summer might be the opposite of past years (our usual annual advice: Park yourself in front of the strongest air conditioning and don’t move). In fact, we think taking in some fresh air, sunshine and greenery – in a space so big you’ll be free to move while staying safely distanced – might the best way to get a moment of mental respite during this deeply messed-up 2020 summer.

flock to the park annually to enjoy the 20 miles of trails for bird-watching, cycling, running, horseback riding, photography or simply enjoying a change of scenery. Though the park is just 27 miles from downtown, it feels far away from Orlando’s city sprawl. The biodiversity of the wetlands makes it a boon for animals as well as visitors – more than 220 bird species live in the park, and 19 endangered or threatened species thrive there as well: 12 birds, three reptiles, two mammals and two insects.

Head east on Colonial Drive until the road forks, then steer right to take State Road 520 until you see the small brown sign beckoning you to turn left and discover Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area. It’s off the beaten path, but its many trails offer a rare solitude typically encountered exclusively in apocalyptic storybooks and doomsday movies. Once inside, enjoy hiking the rugged Florida landscapes – quaint ponds, open fields of wildflowers and canopies of hanging moss – populated in the early morning hours by wild turkeys, boar, deer and more birds than Audubon Park documents on its street signs. Butterflies flock here, too; the Palamedes Swallowtail, Gulf Fritillary, Silver-spotted Skipper and Northern Cloudywing are just some of the species commonly seen in summer.

Split Oak Forest Wildlife and Environmental Area 10525 Clapp Simms Duda Road, 407-254-6840, osceola.org

The county line between Orange and Osceola runs right through this park, untouched in centuries by Central Florida’s rampant development. Only hiking and permitted horseback riding are allowed, while hunting, camping and biking are prohibited. The mostly flat terrain of pine woods and scrub hammocks is home to threatened gopher tortoises, scrub jays, sandhill cranes, Sherman’s fox squirrels, gopher frogs, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, indigo snakes, bald eagles, and feral hogs. The fate of the Split Oak Forest has for the last couple of years been a struggle by local environmental advocates against Central Florida’s self-destructive instinct to give developers whatever they want, whenever they want it but now, in a strange twist of fate, it seems the coronavirus might save Split Oak. Local governments are taking massive revenue hits because of the coronavirus pandemic, and a lot of projects are being slashed. The highway extension planned to mow right through the middle of Split Oak will be delayed for a very long time, and maybe even shelved. Enjoy it while you can, though, because in Florida nothing is certain.

CEMETERY GAITS Walks and picnics in the cemetery aren’t just for Cure fans anymore Story & photo By Matthew Moyer Put on your copy of Disintegration or The Flood to pregame, get that cat’s eye eyeliner just right, hair carefully sculpted and black umbrella in hand, you’re on your way not to the goth club, but a leisurely afternoon at the cemetery! But the good news is that you don’t have to be of the gothic persuasion to enjoy an invigorating conversation in the graveyard; this is actually a recreational tradition going back more than 100 years. At a time when we’re looking for more variety in our socially distanced outdoor activities – the beach is just too crowded, and we don’t have what it takes for a lengthy nature hike – a saunter in a local cemetery is a nice way to while away a lazy summer day. Are you a closet goth for wanting to do this? Absolutely not. History is on your side. In the latter part of the 19th-century, it was customary for families (not just the Addams Family) to make a day of a cemetery outing, complete with picnic lunch. Many towns and cities lacked public parks, and the relatively new,

sprawling “garden-style” cemeteries with lush fields, lots of greenery and shade trees were the closest thing to European cities’ public spaces. No longer crowded into churchyards, these larger cemeteries were a place for exercise, family outings, meditation and contemplation, contact with forces not of this world, letting the children loose for some play, and even carriage racing! In an eerie but fascinating parallel to our present moment, the graveyard picnic peaked in popularity as epidemics of yellow fever and cholera swept the country. Families would indeed picnic on their family plots. As death was such an ever-present reality, it was a perfectly normal thing to gather, eat, talk and commune with family and friends, both living and dead. Here in Orlando, we have one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the whole state – and no, we’re not talking about the graveyard in front of the Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion – we mean the historic Greenwood Cemetery. Greenwood dates back to the tail end of the 19th

century. Its sprawling 86 acres of greenery is equal parts scenic, peaceful and reflective. Notable residents include July Perry, Edna Giles Fuller, Joe Tinker, Jessie “The City Beautiful” Branch and Bob Carr. From the wooden bridge that you cross to gain access to the grounds to the forbidding gate, the plentiful shade offered by knotty old-growth trees draped in moss vying for space with palm trees, statues the likes of which you don’t normally see in Florida graveyards, all manner of unique tombstones and even a crypt or two, there’s a pervading sense of reflection and calm throughout that takes you out of the day-to-day and allows you to think. Don’t worry, getting lost in thought will not result in you getting lost; Greenwood is laid out in a circular pattern. When in doubt, just head left, you’ll return to where you started Now who’s got the boombox with the Joy Division tapes? Play it quiet. Greenwood Cemetery is located at 1603 Greenwood St. and open to the public daily until 7 p.m.

SPARKLE PLENTY Natural bioluminescence lights up Space Coast beaches after dark You might already know that the waters around the Space Coast, including the Banana River, the Indian River and the Mosquito Lagoon near Titusville, are full of bioluminescence after dark – every movement in the water produces an eerie, sparkly light, thanks to photoluminescent plankton and jellyfish. Trust us, though, your out-of-town relatives don’t. Photos of the phenomenon aren’t easy to capture but gain you instant social media bragging rights. And since we are all living our lives on screens this summer anyway, here’s a good chance to light up your feed with an underwater aurora borealis. There are several companies that offer kayaking and pad-

dling tours on the bioluminescent bays and rivers – you’ll find plenty at visitspacecoast.com – but we’ll leave it to your comfort level whether you want to engage in group activities. If you can manage to stay masked until you get in the water, individual kayaks will naturally enforce at least six feet of separation from others, though. It’s a summertime thing, best experienced on dark nights between May and November. Typically, five days after the full moon is the best times to go, so check your lunar calendar – and don’t skimp on the bug spray.

PAGING FLORIDA This summer, we’ll be staying between the sheets By Cathy Salustri and Jessica Bryce Young Hi, Gen X here. Without making light of the pandemic – because, wow, does it suck – I’d like to point out that we Gen X-ers are totally prepared for this. As author Lauren Hough tweeted early on in this whole mess, we’re “the only generation who can keep our asses at home without being told, the motherfucking latchkey kids, the generation used to being neglected by fucking everyone. We’ll be the only ones left.” We are totally here for the #QuarantineAndChill, but, honestly, that’s just Wednesday for us. You’ve seen the memes about people who are so happy when you cancel plans on them? … yeah. It’s not so shocking, then, that we have some suggestions for reading to get you through 2020’s Summer of Solitude. Tuck in, folks. Remember, we’re all in this together … separately.

Holding Smoke, by Steph Post

This is the last book of the Judah Cannon trilogy, and it’s actually a three-fer, because you’re going to want to read all three. There’s a Pentecostal preacher, a drug runner and a Southern family. That should be enough to take your mind off what’s happening, at least for a few hours. Polis Books, 2020.

Cat Tale, by Craig Pittman

If there’s a story that will make you feel hope in times that can feel hopeless, it’s Pittman’s story about “the wild, weird battle to save the Florida panther.” It made us ugly cry and happy cry … but we’re a little on edge these days. How about you? Hanover Square Press, 2020.

In case you were wondering – no, Florida doesn’t have an official state virus. This book should be a handbook for any new Floridian. University Press of Florida, 2019.

Drawn to the Deep, by Julie Hauserman

Hauserman takes a deep dive into the underwater life of Wes Skiles, the man who dived into the Floridan Aquifer – many, many feet below Florida’s sandy surface – to map the twisty limestone tunnels. It’s the perfect book for adrenaline junkies who are now stuck on the couch. University Press of Florida, 2018.

Florida, by Lauren Groff

This collection of 11 short stories will slake any thirst readers have for Sunshine State strangeness. Kirkus Reviews called Florida “a literary tour de force of precariousness set in a blistering place, a state shaped like a gun.” Fans of Karen Russell, Padgett Powell or Joy Williams should not miss this box of poison treats. Riverhead Books, 2018.

Made for Love, by Alissa Nutting

Nutting’s first novel, Tampa, was inspired by the student-seducing middle-school teacher Debra Lafave, and it introduced readers to Nutting’s singular voice: a quease-inducing mix of hard and soft, sentimental and solipsistic. Like Tampa, Made for Love is set in Florida; and like Tampa, Made for Love has a ripped-from-the-headlines plot – this time, our villain is a privacy-invading tech bro rather than a female sexual predator. Hmm, who could that (cough, Zucker)be(rg)? Ecco, 2017.

Salt River, by Randy Wayne White

Speaking of the environment and crime, White’s work remains some of our favorite Florida writing. This is his 26th (!) in the Doc Ford series, released last month, and the series never gets old. Alongside crime, White makes salient points about harmful algal blooms, red tide … and sperm donation. Really. Penguin Random House, 2020.

Roaring Reptiles, Bountiful Citrus, and Neon Pies, by Mark Lane

Tampa Bay columnist Mark Lane’s newest book about Florida takes an irreverent (yet loving) look at our state’s icons. Lane’s easy style will allow you to forget everything happening outside your door.

We Can’t Help It if We’re From Florida

A variety pack of snack-sized tales “from a sinking peninsula,” with a couple of poems sprinkled in for good measure, We Can’t Help It nicely captures the prickly (heat) sensation of reserving the right to savage your own hometown, while defending the place to others harder than a rabid possum. Burrow Press, 2017.

Welcome to Deadland, by Zachary Linville

UCF grad Linville set his first novel in Orlando, and it hews faithfully to the established zombiepocalypse tropes. College-age zombie fighters hack

their way through the infected city from the university, through the housing developments, even up from Miami, and they’re all heading toward ... well, you’ll get no spoilers from us, but only a non-Orlandoan couldn’t guess the magical place they’re all going to meet up. Inkshares, 2016.

Facadomy, by James Cornetet

Local architect James Cornetet wraps a bucket list of Orlando midcentury marvels in a spot-on rant against poorly planned development and it’s all right there in the subtitle: “A Critique on Capitalism and Its Assault on Mid-Century Modern Architecture.” Process Press, 2013.

Finding Florida, by T.D. Allman

This “True History of the Sunshine State” is an acidic and weighty tome covering five centuries of Floridian greed, racism and violence. Atlantic Monthly Press, 2013.

Condominium, by John D. MacDonald

When the pandemic passes, the same ol’ environmental issues remain. If you adore Carl Hiaasen, Randy Wayne White and the Florida crime novel genre, you need to go back in time and read the one that came before all others. Every other novel about the Florida environment and crime succeeds because of this one, first published in 1977.

Oranges, by John McPhee

McPhee’s classic of narrative nonfiction is a miniature universe. Like one of those tiny glasses of OJ served in diners, its narrow covers enclose the geological, historical and meteorological roots of Florida citrus farmers’ struggle to exist. No big deal: just a self-contained cosmology of the Sunshine State, that’s all. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1975.

Alas Babylon, by Pat Frank

Hey, COVID-19 might be a pandemic, but at least it isn’t nuclear war. Worth a re-read if you haven’t read it in years, and if you’ve never read it, do it now. Did we mention it’s set in Central Florida? Yep, “Fort Repose” is a thinly veiled Mount Dora. Lippincott, 1959.

HOLDING PATTERN

Business has been steady at Maitland’s Houndstooth Kitchen & Eatery BY FAIYAZ KARA

Y

ou may recall the days when the Houndstooth Sauce Co. hawked its soups, sandwiches and saucy wares from a humble space inside the East End Market. Chef-owner David Bressler had relocated to Orlando after cheffing about in the Atlanta area, and he managed to grab the last available vendor stall prior to East End’s public unveiling in late 2013. Five years later, he and wife Monica released the Houndstooth from East End and commenced buildout of the new pooch-friendly Houndstooth inside Maitland City Centre, just a mile from the couple’s home. The sauces were dropped (production costs were getting too high); an expanded selection of takeout-friendly vittles was added to the menu; and Houndstooth Sauce Company was reborn as Houndstooth Kitchen & Eatery.

use of brisket. I’ve had this sandwich three times since they’ve opened, so mazel tov! Speaking of sandwich, Houndstooth is sandwiched between Boku Sushi and Sanford Brewing Co. If you’d like to sit at one of the tables outside and grab a beer from next door, the Bresslers have no issue with it. I suppose they’d be fine if you grabbed some sake from Boku. Or maybe some nigiri. About the only thing the Bresslers probably wouldn’t be cool with is if you wore orange and navy blue – the colors of Auburn – anywhere near their shop. You might get smoked, and not in hickory like the hefty turkey club ($12) with garliclime aioli. I wore navy blue and got duly greased by an overly viscous caprese ($10). A side of turkey chili ($2), sweetened with brown sugar, made an ideal neutralizer. Surprisingly, the pandemic hasn’t hit Houndstooth as hard as its neighbors. Takeout was brisk before COVID-19 and business has been steady during. Employees are mask-conscious, and there’s a face guard above the register for good measure. On one visit, as I waited on avocado toast ($7) and a fried chicken sandwich ($9.50) – the chicken is brined in pickle juice before being marinated in buttermilk – I noticed all six of us, customers and workers alike, were wearing masks. Oh, and both the toast and the chicken sandwich were outstanding. If you’re making a mental list of restaurants to patronize over the next few weeks, Houndstooth is one you’ll want to dog-ear. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

Sandwiches are still the focus, but some not-so-ordinary sides ($3/$6/$12) can be had with them – apple-poppy slaw; orzo salad with basil balsamic; and a potato salad blended with white barbecue sauce. The latter is an Alabama staple, and that sweet home state plays large at Houndstooth. Monica’s whole family hails from there, and David’s a ’Bama grad. The eatery’s name, in fact, is a tribute to the houndstooth hat donned by Bear Bryant, the legendary coach of the Crimson Tide. Keeping true to ’Bama’s colors, David even fashions a red barbecue sauce to go with the white, both of which can be found juicing up the braised brisket taco ($3.50). Personally, I thought the Reuben ($10) and its numerous layers of lean corned beef on pressed marble rye made better

the diningin diaries BY FAIYAZ KARA There are mad wizards in the kitchen of Orlando Meats and they’re led by culinary director-owner Eliot Hillis, who positively prides himself on being the Merlin of his kitchen. He quite enjoys being a fearless killer of convention, preferring fermenting over butchering (yawwwn) and giddily experimenting with textures, ingredients, techniques and gastronomic esoterica of all sorts. The menu is a daily whim of offerings – I popped by for takeout after seeing Hillis post an Instagram pic of a duck hot dog in a New England roll slathered in “sticky” char siu mayo and crunched with chicken skin and ginger onions. Absolute bloody magic. But as much as he’s known for being a magus of meat, Hillis’ interest is very much piqued by vegan cuisine. He sees a whole new world with endless possibilities in plant-based fare and so badly wants to offer his creations to the masses. Until he has a place of his own for that, you can sample his and head chef Seth Parker’s vegan dishes at the Night Shovel pop-up at Eola General, 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 26-27. “Night Shovel”? “It’s a reference from Archer and a name that I love,” says Hillis. “It’s silly and stupid.” Of course it is. Shaun Noonan of Eola General says the pop-up will be an outdoor, casual (i.e., non-ticketed) event with an à la carte menu and safety measures – sanitation stations, floor markers, masked servers and staff – in place. For those still leery of social events, curbside pickup will be available. TABLA WINTER PARK

Tabla’s Winter Park outpost is a fetching space with equally fetching fare thanks to chef Sajan Prem. The man is easily the finest chef of Indian cookery the city has, and he’s as deft with street staples (the pani puri is a must) as he is with tandoori items (the lamb chops are the plushest) and curries (the palak ghosht with bone-in goat is, as Russell Peters would say, “mind-blasting.”) Don’t ever leave without trying the sticky toffee pudding. PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: Athlete A – Top Olympians testify to the myriad abuses committed by USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. Yes, friends, this week’s column is going to be a laugh riot. (Netflix) Crazy Delicious Season 1 – The special twist of this new British cooking competition is that the set itself is edible. Which, oddly enough, was also the excuse Paula Deen used to give for her sky-high cholesterol count. (Netflix) Nobody Knows I’m Here – Lost alumnus Jorge Garcia plays a former child singer who turned into a bitter recluse after seeing the workings of the music industry up close. As opposed to the rest of us, who turned into bitter recluses after seeing the finale of Lost. (Netflix) Transhood – Four trans kids in Kansas City bare their souls to documentary cameras that spent a full five years following their trials and triumphs. Thanks to Twitter, it only takes J.K. Rowling five minutes to shit all over them. (HBO Max)

PREMIERES THURSDAY: Adventure Time Distant Lands: BMO – The first of four spin-off films from the late Cartoon Network series features the gender-indeterminate robot BMO in a story of galactic peril. Just don’t go to Kansas City, kid, because they’ll eff you up. “BLOWING UP” I’m committed to my male partner and he’s committed to me. (I’m a woman.) But we both understand we need to flirt and that we will both want to sleep with someone else at some point. We live together, we have a dog and neither of us believes in marriage. We plan to purchase a house in the coming months. Here’s the issue: He met a woman at work. He’s not sexually attracted to her at all. She, however, would love to blow him. She’s in an unhappy marriage and has no friends. They exchanged numbers when my partner was transferred and now she texts him constantly. It doesn’t totally bother me. But not only does she text him at all hours of the day and night, she continuously tells him he’s the hottest man she’s ever met. She sends him nudes, which I’ve seen, and wants to suck his “huge dick.” (It is huge.) But even though I know he’s not sexually attracted to her, I’m still feeling threatened. I have extremely low self-esteem right now and I’m struggling with depression. I’m with a therapist and I’m on meds. But the meds have made me gain about 50 pounds, which doesn’t help with the depression. I get the need and desire to flirt. But right now I’m not confident enough to be OK with him being sexual with another person even if it’s just texts. And I feel this way knowing he has no plans to be with her! He continues to tell me he has no desire to spend his life with anyone else but me. Yet he’s suddenly hesitant to buy a house. I guess I’m asking WTF should I do? Dinging Phone Really Exacerbating SemiSerious Depression You say it doesn’t bother you – it doesn’t totally bother you – that this woman texts your partner day and night, DPRESSD, which strikes me as odd. Because that shit would drive me up the wall. Blowing up someone’s phone at all hours of the day and night screams “I HAVE NO BOUNDARIES! I AM INCAPABLE OF BEING CONSIDERATE! I HAVE NO SELF-CONTROL!” Even if you were in a place where you felt better about your partner getting some attention elsewhere, the shit this woman is pulling would still be annoying, unsettling and totally bothersome. And this shit should be disqualifying – meaning, your partner should’ve shut this woman down already. He should’ve told this woman to knock it off and, if she didn’t knock it off, he should’ve told her to fuck the fuck off and blocked her number. If he tried to shut her down and she kept texting him, then I have to wonder why he hasn’t he blocked her number already. Assuming he’s telling you the truth about not being attracted to her – and it sounds like he is – he may have allowed this to go 38

on because he enjoys feeling desirable and/ or he doesn’t want to hurt her feelings. If it’s the former, make it clear to your partner that you wouldn’t have a problem with him finding someone else to swap flirty sext messages with, so longs as it’s someone who can sext in moderation and at appropriate times. If it’s the latter, make it clear to your partner that this shit is hurting your feelings and, as his partner, you expect him to prioritize your feelings over his former co-worker’s feelings. All that said, DPRESSD, even if the thought of your partner going off to play with another woman didn’t make you feel insecure, you wouldn’t want your partner getting blown by this particular woman. Even if your partner has never said, “Don’t text me at all hours of the day and night,” that’s no excuse. No one wants their phone or their partner’s phone blowing up at 3 a.m.; that’s not a boundary anyone should have to articulate to set and, articulated or not, no one with any common sense would do that. (And, holy crap, if this is how this woman behaves in pursuit of your partner’s big cock, how is she gonna behave after she gets a taste?) As for the house issue, DPRESSD, press your partner to clarify his sudden hesitancy. It may have nothing to do with your relationship; it’s entirely possible that he’s freaked out by the state of the world – because, my God, who isn’t? – and he’s having second thoughts about sinking his savings into a house. Depression often puts the worst possible spin on things; it can lead us to reject a calming truth someone is telling us in favor of an alarming lie we’re telling ourselves. Don’t fall into that trap. And finally, DPRESSD, please talk to your doctor about switching out your meds. If weight gain is a side effect of the ones you’re on now and weight gain is making you more depressed, then it doesn’t make sense to keep treating your depression with the meds you’re on now. A different med might give you the same benefits without this particular side effect. I met someone I connected with during quarantine. We’ve all but committed to screwing our brains out after we’re given the all-clear. But she recently suffered a devastating loss. We will meet, on her terms, most likely very soon. I know I should follow her lead, but should I avoid sex even if she wants to have sex? I don’t know if sex will help or hurt. Is being chaste and supportive the right move? Can sex help in a time of loss? I just don’t want to be the asshole someone winds up writing to you for advice about. Looking Over Sexual Timing

ORLANDO WEEKLY ● JUNE 24-30, 2020 ● orlandoweekly.com

Follow her lead – that’s a good impulse – and if she wants to have sex after you’ve met in person and after you’ve made it clear to her that there’s no rush, LOST, and if you want to have sex after you’ve met her in person, go ahead and have sex. Some people find sex after a devastating loss to be healing and affirming and the last thing that person needs is for someone else to decide they shouldn’t be having sex or even wanting to have sex. As for the all-clear you’re waiting for, well, that could be a long time off, seeing as COVID-19 rates are spiking all over the country. If you decide you can’t wait for the all-clear, please consult the New York Health Department’s safer-sex/harm-reduction recommendations for people who want to have sex during this pandemic. (Google “New York Health,” “coronavirus” and “sex.”) To quickly summarize: You can minimize your risk of contracting or transmitting COVID-19 by wearing a mask, not eating ass, using condoms and using a glory hole. I’ve been dating someone long distance for seven months. I’ve been transparent about my need for an open relationship. Recently this gentleman asked me to tell him if I slept with someone else. I agreed because I’m not sleeping with anyone at the moment due to COVID-19. But since March, I’ve been having phone sex with a long-term booty call who lives across the country. Neither knows about the other and neither one knows I’m bisexual. No big deal, right? How much of an asshole am I for not disclosing what I don’t need to? Not Banging (Other) Dudes You’re being an asshole – to yourself. Hiding your bisexuality from the men you’re dating increases your odds of winding up in a relationship with someone who judges, shames or hates you for being bisexual, NBOD, and why on earth would you want to do that to yourself? Disclosing your bisexuality ups your odds of attracting a guy who fetishizes your bisexuality, of course, but it’s easier to weed those guys out early than it is to leave (or divorce) some guy who reveals himself to be biphobic after you’ve made a huge emotional investment in him. As for the phone sex … you should disclose that too. If Mr. Seven Months can’t handle you having phone sex with some other guy, NBOD, he certainly won’t be able to handle you sleeping with someone else. And if he can’t handle that, he’s not the right guy for a woman who wants/needs/requires an open relationship. mail@savagelove.net
