them with their bikes. Orlando leadership has really dropped the ball on this. They’re doing the same bullshit platitudes that they always do, without any actual action or reform. … We’re the city that rallied after the horrors at Pulse, we’ve got a MASSIVE theater community, one of the most well-known Fringe Festivals, and we still have a PD full of thugs who chase down kids trying to lawfully get outside curfew zones. Orlando leadership has pulled some REAL bullshit on this. They cashed in on the political capital around Pulse, and they pretend to like all the various communities; but when push comes to shove, they’re just repeating rehearsed lines and not doing anything.

Dear Mayor Dyer, Mayor Demings, Chief Rolón and Sheriff Mina: I have been a resident of the City of Orlando and its surrounding areas for almost 12 years now. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I am a peaceful protester. And I am sick and tired of you and your police forces (OPD, OCSO, FHP) bullying and traumatizing the residents of this city. While I’m aware this behavior isn’t new, I am not educated enough to speak to the violence you have committed against the black community for years (but I know the voices of strong black men and women who have been trying that you have refused to listen to). However, as a social worker and therapist who previously worked in the Pine Hills, Parramore and surrounding communities, I witnessed the ripples of trauma that was inflicted by the police and lack of consistent economic support. What I can personally speak to and demand accountability for is the police brutality that has occurred under your watch for five straight nights here in Orlando, where I peacefully protested. We are here, rightfully exercising our First Amendment rights. The moment you sent officers out to meet us with bats, shields and gas masks YOU ALL sent a message that you were not here to listen. You met our voices with violence. They retaliated, not de-escalated. Your officers have gassed, maced, corralled, cornered, chased and tased Orlandoans this week. Yet you stand up there and call that “professional behavior.”
You went further by implementing a curfew, first under the guise of the coronavirus (which you did not feel the need to do over Memorial Day Weekend) then under the guise of protecting people – from who? Your cops are the ones breaking car windows. Now you are perpetuating further mental trauma by blaming the people and praising their oppressors, and walking for black lives only when it makes for a nice photo opp. How dare you. Every statement or action you’ve made this week has only shown you are not listening to hear but to respond. Do you hear yourselves? Do you see yourselves? Because we do. And you can and will all be voted and appointed out – we won’t forget. This week I have seen more people than I can keep track of admit they’ve been wrong, that they’re learning. Be one of those people. End the curfew and stop doubling down on the harm you’ve already caused. Only then can you start to build the trust and change you claim to desire. Only then can you show you understand that Black Lives Matter.
This is bullshit, and we should continue to keep calling it out like we have. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Don’t let the narrative turn into them doing these bullshit walks, then patting themselves on the back about how open and inclusive they are, or how they’re listening to the community. They aren’t. We should be following Minneapolis’ lead and calling for a dismantling of OPD and OCSO and rebuilding this shit from the ground up with the community at the center, not the horseshit police unions and police benevolent societies. While there is a nobility and an importance of cause in average citizens attending protests, marches, walks, and other gatherings, STOP. Please STOP. Whether you are racist or not, white or black, conservative or liberal, a pastor or an atheist, a student or an educator, our police will be there to protect you. While it is their duty to protect and serve, your presence at these gatherings hampers their ability to do just that. Cities across the nation face a shortage of officers needed to protect our communities. When they are forced to dedicate time and personnel to these keep order at these protests, finite law enforcement resources are diluted, diverted, and unable to uphold order elsewhere. While many congregate peacefully, savage beatings, looting, murders, arson, and vandalism occur elsewhere. Our law enforcement personnel cannot be everywhere.

THE F WORD Think ‘it can’t happen here’? Time to read your Sinclair Lewis BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N
Despite the recent prolifera- the liberal world order remained intact. tion of memes, the early-20th-century novelist Sinclair Lewis probably never said, “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.” But he would have endorsed the sentiment. Watching Hitler’s rise to power in Europe while the anti-Semitic Father Charles Coughlin and the swaggering, dictatorial populist Louisiana Sen. Huey “The Kingfish” Long ascended in the U.S., Lewis cobbled together a dystopian near-future for his novel It Can’t Happen Here, which envisioned a Kingfish-like politician winning the presidency on promises to lift up the Forgotten Men – the white working class – and installing a totalitarian regime wrapped in Americana, including a Gestapo-type force called the Minute Men. Before Lewis’ antagonist, Buzz Windrip, took office, liberals fretted about his autocratic tendencies, but their concerns were deemed alarmist – a fascist dictatorship couldn’t happen in America. This was a pervading sensibility in the mid-’30s. In October 1935, the month Lewis’ novel was published, the newspaperman William Randolph Hearst brushed aside anxieties about creeping fascism. That word, he argued, was merely a pejorative aimed at patriots: “Whenever you hear a prominent American called a ‘Fascist,’ you can usually make up your mind that the man is simply a LOYAL CITIZEN WHO STANDS FOR AMERICANISM.” It Can’t Happen Here, which quickly became a best-seller, was a warning about that complacency. What Lewis understood was that there is nothing magical about the Constitution. The document itself has no power. It binds the country only so long as we agree to its tenets – that there should be three separate but equal branches of government; that there should be freedom of speech, religion and press; that all people are guaranteed equal rights under the law, and so on. Our democracy is undergirded by norms more fragile than we’d like to think. Huey Long was assassinated in September 1935, and his planned bid for the Democratic nomination never materialized. FDR was re-elected, and
Within a decade, Hitler was dead and fascism was defeated. Eighty-one years and one month after its debut, It Can’t Happen Here became popular again. Within a week of Donald Trump’s election, the book sold out on Amazon. There were significant differences between the fictional Windrip and the stranger-thanfiction president-elect – Windrip was a quasi-socialist – but there were more than a few similarities, too: Windrip reveled in big rallies. He had a propaganda machine that sought to invent its own reality. He made direct appeals to racial animus, scapegoating Blacks and Jews for the country’s ills. And liberals had spent months before the elections fretting about his illiberal tendencies, their concerns dismissed as alarmist. Upon taking office, Trump didn’t immediately imprison dissenters or dissolve states or label Congress advisory, as Windrip did. But he has shown an affinity for autocrats. He’s expansively wielded executive power, like when he diverted
military funds to a border wall under the guise of a national emergency. And he’s often blustered like an authoritarian, even when he didn’t follow through. Over the last three and a half years, the guardrails of democracy have been slowly eroded, rather than eviscerated – like the proverbial frog in boiling water. Amid the constant chaos of the Trump administration – the Mueller probe, the Twitter bellicosity, the impeachment and Trump’s recriminations – we became inured to these encroachments on the rule of law, and numb to statements and deeds that would have generated weeks of outrage in any prior administration yet barely register now.
Throughout history, the political scientists Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt have written, authoritarians try to do three things: capture the referees, sideline key players and change the rules. Trump has done all three: He’s tried to capture the referees by purging his administration of the disloyal, most recently inspectors general who conducted investigations he didn’t like. He’s sought to sideline key players by intimidating the media, including by bullying the Unite States Post Service to charge Amazon more because he has a grudge against the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post. And he’s tried to change the rules by claiming that efforts to expand voter access are rigged against him and by having Attorney General William Barr game the justice system for his allies. But two recent events have put this squarely into focus. The first came on May 28, when Trump signed an executive order targeting social media platforms because one of them dared to (meekly) fact-check one of his false statements. (Sideline key players? Check. Change the rules? Check.) Two days earlier, Twitter had appended a note to two misleading Trump tweets, directing people to accurate information about voting by mail, which set the president off. The next day, the U.S. eclipsed 100,000 COVID-19 deaths, which he didn’t deign to recognize; he did, however, promise an executive order reining in Twitter. The order, likely unconstitutional, seeks to treat social media platforms that regulate speech in any way as publishers rather than content hosts, making them liable for whatever their users post. (The irony is that, under that standard, Twitter would likely have to ban the president.) This is, in short, the president using the federal government’s regulatory apparatus to force private companies to allow him to spread propaganda and disinformation during the upcoming campaign. The second, of course, is when Barr had federal agents use pepper spray and rubber bullets to clear legally assembled peaceful protesters out of Lafayette Square so that the president could stage an awkward photo op with a Bible in front of a boardedup church. This, just after he pledged to sic the U.S. military on unruly cities, because he is “your president of law and order.” It’s that last scene that brought out the Sinclair Lewis memes. Perhaps it’s too much to call it fascism, even if it’s cloaked in pseudo-patriotism and holding a Bible aloft. illness, I went to a therapist who diagnosed me. A part of me still didn’t want to believe it, so she tried to help me understand. “Excessive worry, nausea?” my therapist asked, listing the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. “Yes.” I nodded. “Repeatedly going over thoughts?” “Yes.” “An irrational fear for the well-being of loved ones?” I hesitated. “Yes.” Apparently, one of the symptoms of anxiety can be an irrational fear of your loved ones being harmed. I was floored that it was so specific, but was almost relieved to know so much of this was just all in my head. But right now, in 2020, I am not OK. I’m not OK because I’ve learned that one of my biggest fears isn’t irrational. Eric Garner. Trayvon Martin. Sandra Bland. Just to name a few. Most recently, Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and David McAtee. The year 2014 was, by no means, the first year of these killings, but the first to be so heavily recorded and reported on. It was surreal. Now, six years later, we have only lost so many more. Before, I was enraged, but holding out hope that some good could come from these incidents. If it’s in the public eye, how much longer could they continue to be so awful with no consequences, right? Wrong. This year, I will turn 26. f you thought the anti-racism and anti-police brutality protests and demonstrations in Orlando were simply going to cool off after a few days, you couldn’t have been more wrong. The young and passionate organizers behind these protests were only getting started. Springing from an outpouring of outrage over the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers over Memorial Day weekend, protests started all over the United States, and all over the world, fostering a very real sense that this is a systemic breaking point. Every day in downtown Orlando – also in Kissimmee, and Sanford, and Winter Park – last week and through the weekend, diverse crowds of hundreds of people marched and rallied and assembled and expressed outrage not just over George Floyd’s murder, but also Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin and so many more. These were actions organized not by a political party but by young adults, most if not all Black, working on a grassroots level with grass-roots mutual aid resources. One couldn’t help but be inspired by the energy, the determination, the commitment and the peaceful nature of these gatherings. Volunteers passed out food and water, donations were accepted and disbursed, and the atmosphere was one of urgency but welcome. We watched an elementary school-age student address the crowd at City Hall during Saturday’s event, and knew that this peoplepowered movement has the potential to be a turning point. Not even Saturday’s tornado could stop them. The protest on Saturday was the largest one yet, with more than 3,000 (OPD later put the number at 10,000) people marching from Lake Eola to downtown, an inspiring wave of humanity that surged through the city’s center armed only with signs and chants. Search out the television news footage from the sky of the crowds converging

and cheering and try not to get a lump in your throat. Over these long days of protest, it was city leaders and police who often escalated the situation, with tear gas, kettling tactics, pepper spray, what appeared to be an LRAD, and a tight downtown curfew all being wheeled out against protesters. These justifications fizzled in the face of both the determination of the protesters and organizers to not be deterred from their work, and from citizen documentation of video and images from their phones, evidence that was solidly on the side of the marchers. This week will bring more protest marches and more gatherings, no doubt. Some will dismiss the efficacy of making signs and marching. But Washington, D.C., painted the biggest sign in the country on 16th street outside the White House – the message that “Black Lives Matter” will forever be visible in any aerial view of the President’s neighborhood. And consider that since the marches started, all four officers involved in Floyd’s death have been arrested and the Minneapolis City Council pledged to disband that city’s police force. This is only the beginning.

THE GLASS SHIELD Bodycam footage released of Orange County Sheriff’s deputy smashing woman’s car window BY C AROLIN E SILVA
I
n a troubling display of force, an Orange County Sheriff’s deputy smashed a woman’s car window near an Orlando “Justice for George Floyd” protest last week, bloodying her face. On Wednesday evening, June 3, the deputy told the woman she was impeding traffic by stopping her vehicle in a lane near Curry Ford Road and Chickasaw Trail and putting on her hazard lights. He asked her to get out of the car, which she did not immediately do, instead asking what she had done wrong. The driver claimed that she was “not doing anything besides driving,” but one of the deputies on the scene said she was committing a traffic violation and that she “was being detained.” The driver kept her window barely open and did not get out of the car. The deputy then stated that she needed to get out of the car, “or we’re going to remove you out of the car, your choice.” As the driver did not step out of the car, the deputy tried to reach through the window and inside the car as the driver attempted to roll up the window. The driver screamed, and then the deputy hit the car window with his baton until it shattered. Orlando Weekly received video of this event from the

driver’s point of view on Thursday. In the video, glass can be seen flying onto the driver and into the passenger seat. The driver sustained minor cuts to her face. While in the deputy’s car, she cried out, “I need help, I’m bleeding, I need an ambulance.” The deputy called for rescue and she was transported to the hospital. After being treated for cuts and minor injuries, she was not arrested. Orange County Sheriff John Mina said in a press
conference the nest day that he found the video “very troubling” and that he has opened an inquiry into the incident. Sanford mayor resigns to run for Seminole Property Appraiser NBA TO RESTART SEASON IN ORLANDO Is this Phase 2 of reopening or Phase 2,000? Unsure, but last week ESPN SportsCenter broke the news via their Instagram account that the NBA Board of Governors had voted to restart their 2019-2020 season. And not only that, but they will be restarting their season right here in Orlando. As reported earlier in the week, the NBA presented a 22-team plan – 13 Western conference and nine Eastern conference teams – to the Board of Governors, and clearly the Board liked what they heard. These teams are now headed to the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex on Disney property to finish out the season. With WWE already running events in Orlando and Major League Soccer also eyeing Orlando as a site to restart
its season, Gov. Ron DeSantis, a proponent of opening the state come hell or high water, was jubilant in a conference call with NBA bigwigs last week, saying, “Orlando really could be the epicenter of the comeback of professional sports.” Last month, DeSantis suggested the University of Florida in Gainesville could host NFL games this season. And in April, DeSantis declared pro wrestling to be an essential business, allowing WWE tapings in Orlando to go ahead and frustrating Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings. In that case, it turned out the governor stood to gain $18 million in free political advertising, paid for by WWE owner Vince McMahon’s wife, Linda. See you on the courts. . – Matthew Moyer
After winning re-election as Sanford Mayor in 2018, Jeff Triplett is calling it quits to run for Seminole Property Tax Appraiser. “This morning, in accordance with Florida election regulations, I resigned my position as Mayor of the City of Sanford,” wrote Triplett in a letter sent to City Clerk Tracy Houchin on Monday. “This was done in concert with my opening of a campaign account, and qualifying to seek the office of the Property Appraiser of Seminole County.” The resignation announcement came as a surprise to city officials. A senior vice president at United Legacy Bank when he was first elected, Triplett is currently owner of JCT Strategies, a role he’s held in addition to the part-time mayoral position. At a later city council meeting, Triplett listened to speaker after speaker condemning his leadership, later saying the experience “jaded” him. If you’d asked me three months
ago, back when Central Florida’s attractions first announced their unprecedented closures due to COVID-19, how I’d feel when I finally got to visit a theme park again, I would have predicted that I’d be pretty enthusiastic. Instead, when that day finally arrived last week at Universal Orlando, my heart was as dark and heavy as the storm clouds that greeted guests during the parks’ private previews and public reopening. Ordinarily I would have been ecstatic to celebrate Universal’s reemergence, as the place I started my career and the home to some of my all-time favorite examples of themed entertainment, especially since June 7 marked the Studios’ 30th anniversary. However, in light of the Black Lives Matter protests bringing long-overdue attention to racist violence in our city and across the nation, I found it impossible to immerse myself in magical fantasies: My frozen Butterbeer was just as sweet as I remembered, but it wasn’t enough to wash the bitter taste out of my mouth. So if you don’t give a shit about social distancing in the Wizarding World right now, skip the rest of this week’s column – I seriously won’t be offended. On the other hand, if you don’t feel too guilty for taking a brief break from reality, read on to learn what a postquarantine Quidditch match looks like. After attending the reopenings of both CityWalk and Disney Springs, I felt Universal had the slight upper hand when it came to managing crowd flow in the age of coronavirus. Therefore, I was somewhat shocked to arrive before rope drop on the first day of reopening previews – which required a timed entry ticket or hotel reservation to restrict attendance – only to find a queue of guests stretching all the way from Islands of Adventure’s entrance to the Universal globe. The sight triggered flashbacks to Harry Potter’s premiere back
in 2010, but once the gates opened I was miraculously through the turnstiles in just over 10 minutes, thanks in part to the disabling of Universal’s finicky finger scans. Deceptive queues turned out to be the theme of the day, because while social distancing separation made standby lines for some rides stretch to their entryways, actual wait times were shockingly low across both parks, despite attractions running at greatly reduced capacities. For example, at Skull Island: Reign of Kong, safari trucks built to seat 72 were instead being dispatched with a dozen-odd widely spaced guests; even so, I waited under 15 minutes to board it, and most of that was spent navigating the queue. Wait times were similarly short at most other headliner attractions during previews and dropped even lower once the general public was allowed back in on June 5. Bad weather undoubtedly depressed attendance, but the pent-up-demand that’s resulted in overcrowded beaches and bars never materialized during Universal’s reopening weekend. Under other circumstances, those historically rock-bottom crowd levels would be an amazing incentive to visit the theme parks, and although the new safety protocols aren’t exactly relaxing, they have inspired some creative problem-solving. Characters can’t do meet-and-greets, so they pose on platforms or parade floats while guests snap socially distanced selfies. The Poseidon’s Fury walk-though now pulses parties through the water vortex tunnel one at a time, making the impressive effect even more personal. There are even brand-new things to enjoy at Universal: An elaborate new Raptor Encounter has opened in Jurassic Park, directly across from the construction zone for 2021’s intimidating – and still unacknowledged – Intamin launched coaster, while signs indicate the Bourne Stuntacular show may premiere next month.
Unfortunately, some of the distinguishing elements that ordinarily set Universal apart from its competition become severe pain points under the parks’ new policies. Disney is dumping their FastPass+ ride reservations when they reopen, but Universal is relying on a free Virtual Line smartphone-based system that’s very similar to the original same-day FastPass service. Virtual Line worked fairly well, when it wasn’t giving me error messages; I got to ride Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and the other two Harry Potter E-Tickets with virtually no standing in lines. The problem is that the lockers – which are unneeded at Disney but mandatory for most Universal thrill rides – garnered longer waits for storing and retrieving bags than the attractions themselves. Disney also may have invented dark ride preshows with the Haunted Mansion’s stretching room, but Universal perfected them with elaborate setups like the simulated elevators in Men in Black and Escape From Gringotts. Both of those are AWOL for now in the name of social distancing, along with the opportunity to hear E.T. garble your name. To add insult to injury, both godawful preshows in Fast & Furious: Supercharged are still intact. Finally, my biggest takeaway from my two days back at Universal is that if audience apathy didn’t already kill 3-D, face masks will. I’ve always been a fan of the format before, but in a mask the aforementioned Kong ride – as well as Spider-Man and Transformers – became nothing more than a foggy blur. Until Universal adds anti-fogging fluid to their goggle cleaning solution, it looks like I’ll be sticking to Forbidden Journey – whose animatronic Dementors and fog-breathing dragon are all still in quarantine – where at least I can still see.

Bua uses tenderloins for his lemony chicken kebabs ($9.45), again served over Greek salad with pita and tzatziki, and that salad is no mere afterthought – ingredients are fresh as can be and there’s no skimping on the sizable block of feta. The beef kebab ($10.99) is a ground, flattened version more akin to chapli and kofta than shish. Oh, and rice or roasted Greek potatoes aren’t offered here. Not sure as to the rationale behind the lack of cooked starches on the menu – the fact GTG is a modest outfit may have something to do with it – though I will say the chickpea salad ($3.99) makes a very worthy substitute. While this may be a small operation, Bua’s no novice. He’s had restaurants in Athens as well as the beach town of Himara, on the Albanian Riviera. He’s also acutely aware of good customer service, chatting and joking away with patrons and employees alike, but doing so with a mask and gloves on. Being sensitive to the times and offering a semblance of reassurance to guests is a trait seemingly lost on other fast casual joints, but not here. What keeps me coming back, however, and I’m ashamed to say this, are the sweets. Bua offers baklava ($3.50) and butteralmond cookies ($3.50) called kourabiedes, both procured from Hellas Restaurant & Bakery in Tarpon Springs. The baklava is baklava, but sweet mother of Homer, those cookies! I’m absolutely hooked. I’d gladly make the odyssey here just to sink my pearlies into these buttery rounds coated in an ungodly amount of powdered sugar. In a word, they’re epic. fkara@orlandoweekly.com
the diningin diaries BY FAIYAZ KARA We all know restaurants have suffered in the pandemic – breakfast joints disproportionately so, and Black-owned restaurants even more so. But a Black-owned breakfast joint? Let’s just say the odds are stacked against them. Kentrail Davis opened Brick & Spoon inside the Villages at Lake Lily in February, mere weeks before COVID-19 sent restaurants reeling. I paid a curbside visit to the restaurant back in April for some beignets, and it felt like the Maitland outpost of the Lafayette, Louisiana-based chain was on its deathbed. Two months later, I found myself sitting at a table inside the spacious restaurant absolutely ravishing a plate of bananas Foster French toast. It took me all of two minutes and change to lick that plate clean – Foster sauce, caramelized bananas, pecan bits, whipped cream and all. I didn’t think this breakfast dessert would travel well, thus the difficult, yet conscious, decision to eat it inside the restaurant, which seemed to be about 30 percent full. All workers – hosts, servers, even Davis himself – wore masks, and all were so congenial that it felt damn good to eat there. For the “Dining-In” part of this diary, I took home some flaky biscuits and sausage gravy, along with an order of Creole-dusted hash browns. WATCH THE THRONE Judd Apatow and Pete Davidson’s King of Staten Island is heartfelt but uneven BY C A M ER O N M E I E R

udd Apatow is one of the toughest filmmakers to peg. Though the producer-director cut his cinematic teeth on seemingly low-brow, slightly raunchy fare, his best films (This Is 40 and, to a lesser extent, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) surprise you with a richness of characterization and an underlying sweetness, especially in their second halves. The King of Staten Island is no different. On first glance, it’s a stoner comedy about a 24-year-old underachiever still living at home with his mom, palling around with fellow deadbeats and doing little to achieve his dream of becoming a tattoo artist. But if you’re already an Apatow fan – and have the patience for a 136-minute movie that hits more than its share of false notes – you might fall in love with this eponymous, lovable loser. The “King” in question is Scott, and he’s portrayed in a surprisingly tender way by Saturday Night Live’s Pete Davidson, who co-wrote the script with Apatow and Dave Sirus and based the story largely on his own life. Like his character, Davidson was born

in Staten Island, and he and the entire movie are imbued with a strong sense of place, as if the island is another one of Scott’s troubled pals. The borough’s reputation is bruised, and so is Scott. He is haunted by the loss of his firefighter father, who died when Scott was young, and he’s jealous of his successful sister (portrayed by Maude Apatow, the director’s daughter) and his mother (Marisa Tomei). He’s particularly angry about his mom’s new boyfriend (renowned stand-up

HHHHH comic Bill Burr), who is also a fireman. “There’s, like, something wrong with me, like mentally,” he tells his part-time girlfriend, played affectionately by Bel Powley
(The Diary of a Teenage Girl). “I’m not OK up there. You know, like, I get all mad, acting like crazy, and I make really insane, impulsive decisions. … I’m scared of myself.” But Apatow is not scared. Indeed, he dives fearlessly into the material, exploring myriad humorous and dramatic avenues in a meandering, chatty fashion. While that almost anarchical sense of structure might be admired on a certain level, it leads to lengthy sections of emotional drift and lack of narrative momentum. And, regrettably, by the time an endearing but underused Steve Buscemi takes center stage toward the end, I was exhausted by the tonal switches, hip-hop musical interludes and a silly subplot involving Scott’s friends that is both contrived and unresolved. When Scott seeks to sabotage his mom’s relationship with Ray by telling her all the bad biographic tidbits he’s discovered, she confronts her son. “It’s like you picked up all these little pieces of information,” she tells him. “They’re fragments.” So too is The King of Staten Island. Though many of its fragments are funny and produce an emotional payoff, the hard truth is that Apatow’s film, just like its title character, is unexpectedly lovable but a bit broken. feedback@orlandoweekly.com

BOW DOWN She’s known as Queen Weltin to the locals who gather once a year (or so) to worship. The night-blooming cereus, aka Cereus grandiflorus, is a flowering, climbing cactus common in tropical areas, where it’s treasured for its fragrant and fleeting beauty. (Flowers bloom just once a year, after nightfall, and are often wilted or gone by the next morning.) There are fine specimens to be found in public throughout Orlando, including a whopper at Mead Botanical Garden, and proud plant parents throughout the region are known to post snaps of their backyard babies when their annual blooms appear. The plant has even inspired its own local Facebook group, “Night-blooming cereus of Orlando,” with more than a thousand members. But there’s one to rule them all – the overwhelming mass of cereus vines on a tree at the corner of Weltin Street and Hardy Avenue is such a wonder that she’s been named “Queen Weltin” by the dedicated petalpeepers who anticipate her bloom every spring. As group admin Charlotte Vernhes warns, Queen Weltin is on private property – so don’t trespass. Most are willing to worship from behind the fence, some posing for selfies with the Queen. And if there are any realtors reading: Many members of the group are concerned that the house is in foreclosure, and worry that new owners might take down the tree.
