Letter from the editor I’m thrilled that I can finally announce we’ve decided to pull the plug on the commenting module on Orlando Weekly articles. To those of you hoping to find a job that pays you $5K a week to work from home ... sorry, you won’t find it in our comments section. This decision came after much discussion among OW staff. There’s been a backlash against comments sections going on for a few years now, with outlets like NPR, Vice, Vox and Reuters all ditching them. On paper, they were a great idea, a utopian notion of the World Wide Web providing an instantaneous “platform” for “dialogue” between reader and creator. And sure, I’ll miss the insights of those who added thoughtful perspectives that our articles missed, especially when you chimed in with the occasional correction to a factual error. In reality, comments sections everywhere routinely devolve into racism, misogyny, Hitler (via Godwin’s Law), spam and personal attacks. It’s even worse for female journalists, who are called names far more vicious than their male counterparts. I refuse to believe some of you
aren’t 13-year-olds, but I know some of you are grown men. Ideally, there would be a web editor who could moderate the comments, but with staff cuts in recent years that isn’t really possible. Now, I know what some of you are thinking: “How DARE Orlando Weekly stifle free speech!” Well, is it really free speech if the trolls are granted anonymity and are held to a different standard than our own writers? As editor in chief, I actually care about what’s published on Orlando Weekly, and that should be extended to the comments section. Plus, with comments sections being at the bottom of the article, it was as if trolls and spammers were literally getting the last word. Social media companies like Facebook and Twitter have famously distanced themselves from the responsibilities of moderating what their users post because they claim they aren’t “publishing companies.” Well, we are a publishing company. So why should we act like a social media platform? And speaking of social media platforms, you can still comment on our Twitter or Facebook posts.
People act like comments sections are an inalienable human right, but there’s really no historical analog for them – except for maybe the old-fashioned letters to the editor. Remember those? We run a small letters section each week in the print edition of Orlando Weekly, but people don’t really seem to write letters or emails anymore. In recent months, I’ve been scraping together the best comments from the web to use in print, but it gets harder to find comments that are 1) legibly written and 2) not simply memes week after week. If you really want your voice to be heard, guess what? You can still do that! You can email comments or corrections to feedback@ orlandoweekly.com. If you have a news tip, you can email tips@orlandoweekly.com. I promise you I’ll read them. And if it’s good enough, maybe we’ll print it in our letters to the editor page. I hope to see this page filled with incisive commentary from close readers next week. You know, like the good old days – before comments sections. Jessica Bryce Young, editor

OFFICIAL WHITE HOUSE PHOTO BY SHEALAH CRAIGHEAD
BARR SINISTER
Sure, Trump could lose. But if he does, Bill Barr will torch the Constitution on the way out. BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N
Maggie Haberman tweeted something
the other day that I found remarkable. Promoting a story on President Trump’s attacks on voting by mail, the New York Times White House correspondent wrote that Trump was “accelerating his attacks on the integrity of the elections” because he was “unable to stop [Joe] Biden’s rise or modulate his own behavior.” Even facing humiliation in November, the president can’t control himself or stop tilting at conspiratorial windmills. He’s a cokehead on a bender, in other words, or a toddler who needs a nap – only he has the federal government at his disposal and no compunction about using it to his own ends. So we can agree, then, that Donald Trump is the most dangerous man in America (and if you believe his niece, the world). But barring a dramatic reversal, he’ll leave office in six months with few meaningful victories beyond the ideologues he’s appointed to the bench. In the long run, the second most dangerous man in America might leave a more damaging legacy. Since his appointment last year, Attorney General William Barr has enabled and encouraged Trump’s autocratic fetishes, laying the groundwork for a vast expansion of executive power that answers to neither court nor Congress, aided by a Department of Justice that has forsaken any shred of independence, to brazenly function as a White House consigliere.
From the outset, Barr made clear that he believed the president could do as he pleased – and that he viewed himself foremost as Trump’s, not the nation’s, legal advocate. Barr’s wildly misleading four-page summary of the Mueller report allowed the president to claim vindication – until the full report later showed that Trump had almost certainly obstructed justice and would have been indicted were he not the president. Barr has still not released the internal memo on which he based his conclusion that Trump did not break the law, though, according to an unsolicited memo he sent the DOJ and Trump’s lawyers in 2018 – which might have played a role in his nomination a few months later – he didn’t believe interfering in the investigation was a crime in any event. After that, he set out to undermine the Mueller investigation piece by piece. He assigned a U.S. attorney to investigate the origins of the Russia investigation, and another to re-evaluate the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who had pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI. The DOJ dropped charges against Flynn. It also reduced its sentencing recommendation for Trump pal Roger Stone, who lied to Congress; four career prosecutors withdrew from the case in protest. Over the last few weeks, the full range of Barr’s subservience has come into focus. Amid the George Floyd demonstrations, for instance, Barr personally ordered law enforcement to
attack peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square to make way for Trump’s photo-op in front of a church. Then, following Trump’s lead, Barr baselessly fearmongered about voting by mail – though, also like Trump, he himself has voted by mail. On June 24, a federal prosecutor testified that Barr ordered prosecutors to reduce the government’s sentencing recommendation in Stone’s case after Trump tweeted his disapproval. Another DOJ prosecutor testified that Barr forced the anti-trust division to investigate mergers in the cannabis industry because he hates weed and to investigate California automobile makers that committed to Obama-era emissions standards following – wait for it – a Trump tweet. And we’ve not yet touched the Friday Night/Saturday Afternoon Massacre – Barr’s bungled effort to remove Geoffrey Berman, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, the office that prosecuted former Trump attorney Michael Cohen and is now investigating cases involving the president, the Trump Organization, and current Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani. On June 19, Barr announced that Berman had resigned and would be replaced by an administration buddy. But Berman said he had not resigned. And because he’d been appointed by judges, only Trump could fire him. So the next day, Barr announced that Trump had fired Berman, though Trump seemed to deny it. But Berman stepped down anyway; having been fired, his deputy, not Trump’s lackey, would take over the office and its pending investigations until the Senate approved a replacement. Barr gave himself a headache for nothing. The question, yet unanswered, is why he so urgently wanted Berman out of the way – whether, perhaps, he might want to stall an investigation through November. Barr says Trump merely wanted to install his own man – Securities and Exchange Committee chairman Jay Clayton, who has no prosecutorial experience – in that post, and he dismisses concerns about his motives as “conspiracy theories.” Feel free to roll your eyes. As Donald Ayer, a deputy attorney general during the George H.W. Bush administration, told the judiciary committee last Wednesday, “I was privileged to serve in the Department of Justice under two Republican and one Democratic president, and I am here because I believe that William Barr poses the greatest threat in my lifetime to our rule of law and to public trust in it. That’s because he does not believe in its core principle: that no person is above the law.” House Democrats have shown little appetite for impeaching Barr, which is their only recourse. Senate Republicans, of course, would acquit him, and besides, with Biden up by landslide margins, they’re not eager to do anything that might alter the course of the election. On a pragmatic level, that’s understandable. But the more Barr’s vision of an unaccountable, quasi-monarchial unitary executive becomes entrenched – the longer it exists without a sustained pushback – the harder it’s going to be to get the toothpaste back in the tube. Scream into the void if you must. But don’t let his flagrant corruption and abuses of power go unchallenged. Demand his resignation. Dare Republicans to defend the indefensible. The rule of law may depend on it. After all, history tells us that once an executive obtains power, it’s seldom given back.

After resigning from office, former Seminole Tax Collector Joel Greenberg drops out of re-election race Former Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg followed up on his resignation from office by dropping his re-election campaign as well last Friday. Though the move was expected after federal indictments on stalking and identity theft against him were revealed last Tuesday, Greenberg is known for shady financial practices involving his own office and campaigns – so it’s a relief for Seminole County residents that he might finally be retreating from public life. This was to be Greenberg’s first re-election bid, despite having pledged to serve only one term, and he faced a oncecrowded field of contenders which still includes former Real Radio 104.1 host Lynn “Moira” Dictor. A cryptocurrency fanatic, Greenberg had self-financed most of his campaign war chest, giving himself two donations totaling 30 Bitcoin, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. On June 9, Panhandle congressman and eternal frat guy Matt Gaetz donated the maximum of $1,000 to Greenberg’s re-election campaign, as did former Florida House Speaker Chris Dorworth the next day. Not coincidentally, one of the other opponents to drop out Friday is no-party-affiliated candidate Daniel Day, a business associate of Greenberg’s who was using the nickname “Dani Mora Day” on the ballot, a transparent effort to confuse voters and slice off a few points from Dictor. The remaining Republican challengers, Trinity Preparatory School teacher Brian Beute and mortgage broker J.R. Kroll, will face off in an Aug. 18 primary to see who will take on Dictor in the general election on Nov. 3. Greenberg is charged with making repeated false allegations to the school against Beute, posing as a “very concerned teacher” through a fake social media account. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will name a temporary replacement to fill Greenberg’s place until the end of his term on Jan. 4. This may end the political career of Greenberg, who also shared on Facebook last month that he tested positive for COVID-19, but his legacy of anti-Muslim bigotry and corruption will likely continue to generate headlines. In August 2018, he was called upon to apologize or resign for sharing a social media post that stated, “Very simple question...Name just ONE society in the developed world that has benefited in ANY WAY from the introduction of
more Muslims. Just one. Asking for a friend.” In October 2018, a Muslim woman Greenberg had fired from the county office filed a discrimination lawsuit against him, and later that month other former employees alleged he fired them for supporting his incumbent Republican opponent in the 2016 primary. In September 2019, the Orlando Sentinel reported Greenberg had formed a private company, headquartered within his public office, as part of a plan to “migrate information from drivers licenses, property taxes and other functions” onto a private, encrypted database. In October 2019, the Sentinel also reported Greenberg had set up consultant contracts and salaries with friends and associates totaling $3.5 million, which also revealed Greenberg had planned to spend $109,000 on his blockchain scanning project. Earlier this year, Greenberg was accused by another former employee of plotting a Bitcoin ransom scheme against his own tax collector’s office. Voters will likely not miss Greenberg’s distracting antics – or schemes involving taxpayer dollars – so now the election can focus instead on choosing a qualified replacement. – by Dave Plotkin
Florida looks for a ‘way forward’ on bars reopening Florida’s ban on serving alcohol to people in bars will be re-evaluated daily, the state’s top business regulator said in a series of tweets last weekend that also offered apologies for the crackdown. Meanwhile, Gov. Ron DeSantis said last Sunday the Department of Business and Professional Regulation is “trying to figure out a way forward” for bars, nightclubs and craft breweries that are essentially having to shut down again because of “widespread non-compliance” with coronavirus guidelines – non-compliance he attributed mostly to young adults who are “going to do what they’re going to do.” “My view is, I’d rather have those places open, complying,” DeSantis said during a news conference in Pensacola. “I think that’s probably less risky than what a lot of the young people end up doing.” Halsey Beshears, secretary of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, issued an order last Friday suspending on-site consumption of alcohol at bars amid a surge in coronavirus cases in the state. The order doesn’t affect restaurants or other businesses that derive 50 percent or less of their gross revenue from the sale of alcohol.
Bars had been allowed to reopen June 5 in the second phase of DeSantis’ effort to revitalize the economy. They were limited to 50 percent indoor capacity and were only supposed to provide service to seated customers. “Nothing I say or do will stop the pain, small business owners are feeling,” Beshears tweeted Saturday. “I empathize & understand, I’ve been there. It’s more then u: it’s your employees & the families they support. I’ll keep taking the hate, if it makes any of you feel better.” “We must forcefully flatten the curve,” he continued. Under Beshears’ order, bars are allowed to sell drinks in “sealed containers” for off-site consumption. To one Twitter post that said, “Florida once again providing living proof that, as a society, we cannot handle having nice things,” Beshears simply replied, “I’m sorry.” To a Twitter user who expressed that “Alcohol is not essential,” Beshears replied, “Many would probably disagree with this statement.” When asked why the state didn’t just suspend or revoke licenses of establishments that violated the rules, Beshears noted incidents were widespread of bars exceeding the guidelines. “We did that earlier this week,” Beshears responded. “Since it’s so widespread and the infected demographic so clear, we needed to grab this forcefully and immediately. Am going to consider this daily moving forward.” Last Monday, Beshears’ department suspended the license of the Knight’s Pub in Orlando for violating the terms of DeSantis’ order that allowed bars to reopen. The number of coronavirus cases has soared in Florida this month, with the Department of Health last weekend reporting an additional 8,530 cases. DeSantis has repeatedly cited young adults as a major reason for the spike and focused on how the virus does not cause as many deaths and serious medical problems for young people as it does for seniors and people with underlying health conditions. But the Florida Democratic Party in an online ad last Sunday took a shot at DeSantis for his claims that Florida had a hold on the virus in May. “Despite two consecutive record shattering days this weekend, DeSantis wants us to believe that nothing has changed and that we are on the path to reopening the economy safely,” Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Terrie Rizzo said in a statement. “With nearly 10,000 cases confirmed [Saturday], it has never been more clear that DeSantis failed Florida. Like his mentor Donald Trump, DeSantis is playing politics instead of prioritizing the health and safety of Floridians.”. – by Jim Turner, News Service of Florida

STREET FIGHT Orlando’s Black Lives Matter street mural was a significant affirmation of city leaders’ commitment to routing out racism. But if it isn’t accompanied by systemic change in policing, is it anything more than a nice gesture? BY JESSICA BRYCE YOU N G
T
hey say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Few would claim that Orlando city leaders had anything but the best intentions in mind when they painted the words “Black Lives Matter” in letters 30 feet high on the surface of Rosalind Avenue. But many residents, Black and white alike, question the utility of the gesture. After “BLACK LIVES MATTER” was painted in giant letters on 16th Street just across from the White House, other cities took notice. From Oakland, California, to Raleigh, North Carolina, mayors emulated Washington, D.C.’s Muriel Bowser with their own BLM street murals. St. Petersburg unveiled its own brightly patterned street mural as part of its Juneteenth celebration. In Orlando, after a coalition of community and faith leaders and activists presented a plan, the decision was made by city staff to move forward with our own version on a stretch of Rosalind between Washington and Robinson streets. On a sunny Friday morning, local pols got the outline started in red paint, masks on faces and broom-handle paint rollers gripped firmly, for a photo op. Then youth enrolled in the city’s summer camp program and students from Jones High School were joined by volunteers from Black Voters Matter, Cobaris International Ministries, Drop D No Limits Foundation, Equal Ground Education Fund, Faith in Florida, Greater Refuge, New Image Youth Center, Salvation Army, Stop the Violence and Embrace,
the Experience Christian Center and Valencia College rolled up their sleeves and applied 170 gallons of black, green and red paint to a 400-foot-long asphalt canvas. “We believed this was a way to join together as a community and in a symbolic way, further reaffirm Orlando’s commitment to take action to stop racial injustice and inequality,” said city spokeswoman Cassandra Lafser on Friday. The intention was to finish up on Saturday morning, but as is so often the case in the nation’s discourse, anonymous commenters had something to add. Overnight, graffiti saying “Abolish the police,” “Defund OPD” and “Not enough,” among other phrases, was spraypainted across the giant mural letters. City Commissioner Regina Hill was at the site Saturday morning, waiting for a cleanup crew. City workers painted over the graffiti. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer issued a statement: “We’re deeply saddened that a symbol of our commitment to ending racial inequality created together with our community was vandalized,” he said. “We find this type of behavior disturbing, it has no place in our city, and this will not deter our efforts to bring about real change and action.” But a significant segment of the city rejected the easy narrative of “mural good, graffiti bad.” Echoing many of Orlando’s white allies, small business owner Andrew Chang posted a photo of the mural on Instagram asking,
“But where is that police reform and justice? Asking for all of our Black friends ….” “I believe the mural is an incremental step in the right direction,” says Orlando photographer and business owner Wayne Grant. “Speaking to activists in quiet oneon-one moments, you quickly realize that expectations are far more idealistic than realistic.” Tyla Harrington, one of those younger activists – also Black, also a photographer – says more bluntly, “I feel that all of these gestures are meaningless and empty. The only thing that needs to happen are punishing cops that harm us and extending legislative protections for Black people specifically, where there are big consequences for harming us, and a reparations package to all descendants of American slaves. That mural means nothing.” Diplomatically threading the needle, Miles Mulrain Jr., CEO of Pine Hills nonprofit Let Your Voice Be Heard, says, “The Black Lives Matter Mural was never the issue, the timing and rollout of the mural was. Despite the money spent that could’ve went to better places, activists never organized an effort against the mural because we understood the symbolism – but in the same light, we showed up to speak about why the symbolism wasn’t enough.” The Black Artists For Black Lives march that went right past the mural on Sunday was planned before the mural was unveiled. But its presence, and subsequent defacement/ commentary (take your pick) gave the artist-centric march poignant new relevance. Mulrain continues, “The fact that the mural was defaced goes to show there was a lack of structural and cultural change in the city before it was announced. We have policies that can be changed just as fast as they were changed for the curfew. We have officers with a proven history of abuse that are still employed by the city. We have officials with the power to change systemic structures locally that still adversely affect the Black community. We have work to do, and it is not time for a celebration.” Janessa Gursky contributed additional reporting.

Universal’s Bourne Stuntacular may be the last great theme park spectacular we see for a long time A MINI CRASHES DOWN STAIRS IN THE BOURNE STUNTACULAR QUEUE | PHOTO BY SETH KUBERSKY
Earlier this month, I shared my
experiences visiting the newly reopened Universal theme parks, and then signed off for a short but sorely needed sabbatical. I’d naively hoped that some semblance of sanity (or at least stability) might have reasserted itself by the time I returned, if not in the world at large, then at least among Central Florida’s attractions. Well, no such luck. Instead, fans found themselves losing their damn minds over one thing after another all throughout June. Just last week, the DisTwitter online community went crazy twice within 24 hours, first over Disney’s planned conversion of their racially problematic Splash Mountain log flume into a Princess and the Frog ride (which might not actually occur for years, but has already enraged self-proclaimed purists), and then over the release of coveted park pass reservations to Walt Disney World annual passholders, which will be required once the Magic Kingdom and its siblings start receiving guests again next weekend. I was among the guests who got up before dawn to use Disney’s new reservation system, which is scheduled to be in use into September 2021, on its debut day. After hours staring at looping animations of Space Mountain, waiting endlessly for my opportunity to log in only to be left with blank screens or error messages, and attempts using multiple devices (pro tip: Use Chrome on a computer, not a mobile device), I finally managed to secure reservations for three of the four theme parks. As of this writing, while there is still plenty of room for on-site hotel guests and standard ticket-buyers, the Disney parks are already almost completely “sold out” to annual passholders for most of July and much of August, with Disney’s Hollywood Studios in particular being booked solid until Aug. 13. Those guests who did grab golden tickets back into DHS will discover a very different experience compared to the pre-
pandemic park. Sure, they’ll finally be able to enjoy Rise of the Resistance and Slinky Dog Dash without needing a virtual boarding pass or FastPass, since only socially distanced standby queues will be used. But after they’ve blown through the park’s brief list of blockbuster rides, they won’t have its underappreciated lineup of live entertainment to fill out the day. The stages featuring Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast Live, the Frozen Sing-along and Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular will all remain empty, and the “streetmosphere” improvisers will be absent, leaving occasional motorcades of costumed characters as the park’s sole performers. Since park hopping will be prohibited when Disney’s parks reopen, you won’t be able to exit DHS and spend the afternoon drinking around the world at Epcot, whose Food & Wine Festival will return sans concerts. Similar slashes to live entertainment are planned across the other parks; at the same time, the Actors Equity union has called for the resort’s reopening to be delayed in light of Florida’s rising coronavirus rate. While Disney’s performers continue to cool their heels, Universal has reopened most of its live entertainment with adjustments for social distancing, some for the better; the Horror Make-up Show is now funnier than ever with over-the-top PPE precautions. Unfortunately, although weekends with good weather have seen crowds approach Universal’s newly limited maximum capacity, weekdays have been largely deserted, leading to drastic staffing cutbacks across the company that landed particularly hard on creative employees. Entire teams, such as the props department that fabricated models for upcoming attractions, have been decimated, and many talented artists with decades of experience are now unemployed. Universal’s layoffs were mostly limited to behind-the-scenes positions, whose
losses might not immediately be felt by today’s visitors, but could echo for years to come. After 10 years of aggressive expansion, Comcast is firmly pumping the brakes, and we can expect any additions after the under-construction Jurassic Park coaster to be delayed indefinitely, with the planned Epic Universal park pushed back at least a year. More worryingly, the cutbacks will have consequences for our local arts community – already battered by canceled seasons and the recent closure of Winter Park’s Breakthrough Theatre – whose directors and designers often relied on theme park paychecks. Ironically, all this happened only days before June 30’s official opening of The Bourne Stuntacular, the latest live-action triumph from Universal Orlando. As a former technician on the Terminator 2: 3-D show, I was skeptical that its theater’s new occupant could possibly live up to T23D’s groundbreaking legacy. But after previewing a recent technical rehearsal, I’m happy to declare it the best stunt show in Orlando, operating or otherwise. You don’t need to be even vaguely familiar with the Matt Damon film franchise to follow the MacGuffin-filled plot of this 20-minute thrill ride, which stages bareknuckle fisticuffs and high-flying stunts against an immersive 130-foot-wide floorto-ceiling video backdrop. The border between screen and reality blurs as fullsized cars swerve down digital streets with actors clinging to the hood; Arnold’s timetraveling Harley was never this impressive. The talented cast from Action Horizons even does it all while wearing face masks, with socially distanced audience seating setting an example other theaters could follow. Be sure to chase down Bourne’s showtimes (and arrive 15-20 minutes early) if you’re returning to Universal Studios Florida, because this may be the last great theme park spectacular we’ll see for a long time. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

KWAME’S INFERNO

Chicken Fire owner Kwame Boakye takes Nashville hot chicken lovers to hell and back BY FAIYAZ KARA
C
ooking with love can make all the difference between a good dish and a great dish. But cooking with revenge? Well, that can mean the difference between dead meat and hot meat. Luckily in the case of Thornton Prince, it was the latter, so the story goes. Some Saturday night philandering gave Prince’s good lady an idea to tat all his titting about – she’d lace his Sunday morning fried chicken with enough capsaicin to put his knickers in a twist and his bowels in full churn. Unfortunately for her, Prince not only loved the chicken, but opened a restaurant specializing in the scorned woman’s fire bird. Thus the
legendary Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack in Nashville was born, tempting masochists from all over the world to grease their chops, redden their fingers and baste in their own sweat. Here in Orlando, Kwame Boakye carries the torch and damn well burns the place down from a food trailer he calls “Chicken Fire.” And the chicken is fire. Absolute fire. This kid from Akron with Ghanaian roots spent months perfecting his recipe, and a purist one at that. It has, evidently, impressed visiting and expat Nashvillians alike, and well it should – Boakye procures his chicken from Prestige Farms in North Carolina,
the diningin diaries
brines it, batters it, fries it, then tosses it in a hot oil glaze peppered with a secret blend of spices of which cayenne and brown sugar are the most discernible. And this being Nashville hot chicken, even the “mild” is anointed in demon lube. He’s been serving it at food truck park A La Cart but, by the time you read this, Chicken Fire will be set up at East End Market for the month of July. Yep, Boakye will add more heat to the hottest month of the year – and there’s talk you may see them at the market on a more permanent basis. This really needs to happen, ’cuz Boakye’s NHC is the some of the best you’ll have anywhere. Seriously. (I’m coming for you next, Fat Mike’s.) The white-meat tenders, served in kid box ($5), hot box ($9) or big box ($12) sizes, gave me all the mouthfeels – crispy, juicy, greasy, infernal. They’re streaked with a bit of honey, sit atop white bread ( just like they do at Prince’s) and come garnished with pickles. There’s even a creamy sauce intended to palliate the sting. Re: those heat levels, the “medium” tenders immediately drew out the hashafashashas and beads of sweat from my comrade’s head. Didn’t help that it was 95 degrees sitting out on A La Cart’s artificial turf. The outdoor space was unusually busy for a Tuesday night and right after devouring a “hot” slider ($11 for two) with crinkle fries and guzzling a glass of Lone Tree’s strawberry-kiwi blonde ale, I got the holy hell out of there. Let’s just say the social distancing being practiced by A La Cart’s patrons wasn’t to my liking, though staff were quick to admonish guests not wearing masks. On the following Friday, the crowds had thinned a fair bit – no surprise, given it was the day alcohol consumption at bars was suspended. It was also the day I ordered my tenders “hot x2” (translation: “hot hot”) which is one notch below their hottest offering, “hot infinity” (translation: poof!). One bite was all it took for my scalp to transform into a water sprinkler. Nevertheless, I’m, uhh, stoked to see Boakye experiment with the Scoville Scale as he grows Chicken Fire’s menu. Personally, I’d like to see him incorporate his Ghanaian roots into his chicken – maybe serve it with jollof rice punched with habañeros. Whatever he ends up offering, rest assured there’ll be no serenade, no fire brigade, just culinary pyromania.
BY FAIYAZ KARA Ever since Bad As’s Sandwiches opened its second outpost on Fairbanks Avenue, Winter Park has been under attack by killer sandwiches. They emerge from the space that once housed Brooklyn Pizza, then smack people in the mouth with a wallop of flavor, just as they do from Bad As’s original Milk District space. These are strange times to be opening a restaurant, but owner John Collazo says he’s worked his bad ass off to get his second sandwich shop up and running: “It’s been crazy difficult. Everything moved so slow since they closed City Hall to the public. You had to leave voicemails, then wait a few days for them to call you back, if they even called you back.” When I popped in last week, I was pleased to see everyone – patrons and staff – wearing masks, though I felt for the girls working the grill station on this steamy summer day. It made me appreciate the Soprano, with its combination of dark chicken meat and pepperoni, and a special of the day dubbed the “Steakhouse,” a monster of a sandwich roaring with roasted ribeye, bacon, dehydrated mushrooms, sautéed onions, crispy chips and blue cheese cream. Having any of these sandwiches for lunch will all but negate the need for dinner, which probably makes Collazo happy. Something else he’s elated about – having his marquee overlooking a major thoroughfare: “I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would actually have a sign on Fairbanks Avenue. I’m living a dream.” Don’t wake up, John. Make the dream last. (1881 W. Fairbanks Ave., Winter Park, 407-951-6971; also 207 Primrose Drive, 407-757-7191; badasssandwiches.com)

TABLA WINTER PARK
Tabla’s Winter Park outpost is a fetching space with equally fetching fare thanks to chef Sajan Prem. The man is easily the finest chef of Indian cookery the city has, and he’s as deft with street staples (the pani puri is a must) as he is with tandoori items (the lamb chops are the plushest) and curries (the palak ghosht with bone-in goat is, as Russell Peters would say, “mind-blasting.”) Don’t ever leave without trying the sticky toffee pudding. FLORIDA FILM FESTIVAL IS BACK ON AND SET FOR AUGUST
ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO
by Matthew Moyer The Florida Film Festival is back on this year, with rescheduled August dates announced last week, and it looks like Maitland’s Enzian Theater is set to be the sole host theater for all of this year’s FFF film screenings and events. The full Festival schedule and programming (including venue details) will be released on Wednesday, July 15. FFF organizers are also exploring virtual options for screenings as of this writing. FFF, now in its 29th year, was originally set for April and then postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But with Enzian Theater, FFF headquarters, having reopened on June 12 at 50 percent capacity, the festival is back on track – fingers crossed – and happening Aug. 7-20.

BY STEVE SCHNEIDER
PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: Say I Do – The creators of Queer Eye bring us a new reality buttinskyfest, in which a fashion designer, an interior designer and a chef make sure that couples who have been together for years finally have their dream wedding. But if people have managed to avoid getting married for that long, why end their lucky streak? It’s like hiring the cast of Ice Road Truckers to go around causing accidents. (Netflix) Unsolved Mysteries – The seminal ’80s docuseries returns to investigate more strange phenomena and crime trails run cold. Just don’t expect to see previous hosts Robert Stack and Dennis Farina, both of whom are now dead. Suspicious, huh? Maybe the show ought to look into that. (Netflix)
PREMIERES THURSDAY: Warrior Nun – In this manga-derived supernatural actioner, a 19-yearold is conscripted into an ongoing battle between good and evil. Each of the initial 10 episodes is named after a specific Biblical chapter and verse, which should help you get back at your insufferably pious loved ones: Give them five seconds to explain what’s in Proverbs 14:1, and prove they know that stuff just about as well as the Bhagavad Gita. (Netflix)
PREMIERES FRIDAY: Hamilton: An American Musical – Broadway has been cannibalizing popular culture for years now. But who could have predicted an entire musical based on Brad Hamilton, Judge Reinhold’s character from Fast Times at Ridgemont High? Sure, that swimming-pool scene is going to be tough to handle, but just one sight of our Brad in his Captain Hook getup should carry enough nostalgic heft to overcome the skepti-

cism of any theater snob. To quote Jeff Spicoli, “All right, Hamilton!” (Disney+) * Hanna: Season 2 – In its second season, this film-to-TV adaptation moves past the plot of the 2011 thriller about a teenage assassin. I hear she’s a K-pop stan now or something. (Amazon Prime) Desperados – Nasim Pedrad stars in a feature-length comedy about a woman who’s intent on retrieving an email that could end things between her and her boyfriend. Listen, if Nasim Pedrad could say anything that would make you want to break up with her, you clearly have more social options than I do. (Netflix)
“We are excited to announce that we have been able to retain over 90 percent of the original festival lineup. In addition, we are also able to bring in some outstanding new films that were previously unavailable in April,” says FFF programming director Matthew Curtis.
JU-ON: Origins, Season One – A six-episode series based on Japan’s The Grudge horror franchise, in which a curse arises every time someone goes to bed seething with rage. It’s 2020, so I highly doubt they can cover this in six episodes. (Netflix)
Over the weekend, however, an anonymous Change.org petition began circulating online, calling for a postponement of the FFF or an option for Enzian employees to opt out of work for the duration of the Fest without getting fired, in light of Florida’s rapidly surging coronavirus numbers and paused reopening. As of this writing, the petition has more than 300 signatures, with a goal of 500.
PREMIERES SUNDAY: Outcry – Five documentary episodes tell the story of Greg Kelley, a Texas high-school football star who was jailed for child molestation. Was he really guilty? And how will we ever find out, without Robert Stack or Dennis Farina to tell us? (I still say that whole thing’s fishy!) (Showtime)
PREMIERES MONDAY: The Haters – Fresh from a win at the Tribeca Film Festival, this Polish feature profiles a former law student who takes a job as an online troll. Wait a minute – I could be getting paid for this? (Netflix)

THE UPSETTER Orlando rapper Sean Mingo finds his voice with ‘T.K.T.B.’ By Matthew Moyer

Seeing Orlando outsider hip-hop collective OhTwo live for the first time in 2018 was a revelation, and a lot of that was down to the fearless, frantic performances of Sean Mingo.
At a house show, Mingo once made the floorboards shake from his stomps and leaps. The young MC was a blur, treating even the tiniest of DIY stages as one would a packed club: all sweat, physicality, oft-eccentric costumes and impeccable flow. Last year, though, Mingo and his OhTwo bandmates gradually drifted apart. You take three highly creative young people bursting with their own ideas and put them together, and it’s bound to happen sooner or later. Shows became three separate solo sets by the trio, still thrilling to watch, but the writing was on the wall. Mingo soon focused on his side project Club Goya, initially a collaboration with OhTwo producer Byson, before stepping out from behind the alias and performing solely under his own name. Whether as Club Goya or Sean Mingo, however, he threw himself into live work as a theatrical experience. “Any time I do a show, it’s got to count,” says Mingo. “I used to write a lot before I made music, and I like the idea of joining plots and storylines to live music.” The apex of this came when Mingo headlined the In-Between series – one of the few hip-hop performers to play that venerable event. He set up the stage area to look like a lounge and used actors, glitchy projections and a reflective, zebra-striped hoodie to create a surreal one-act musical. This is an artist very much in control of his creative destiny. But it’s a strange fucking time to be an artist right now. The original plan had been to release his first solo fulllength, T.K.T.B., at the beginning of June, but Mingo delayed it as the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police set off Black Lives Matter protests around the country against racism, police brutality and systemic injustice. Justifiably, everything else took a backseat. And Mingo himself needed time to process it all. “It felt cheap to release it then,” explains Mingo. “Even though it is timely. It’s my perspective, it’s about me being a Black artist in Florida, and being able to experiment without judgement.” T.K.T.B. is a definitive departure from Mingo’s previous work. This album is an ambitious and adventurous song cycle that is very much rooted in the present moment of summer 2020, while sonically it trips through the timestream at will. Whereas Mingo’s music with OhTwo and Club Goya was kinetic and hard-charging, T.K.T.B. is hypnotic, reflective and dreamlike. Mingo handled all the production, and played bass on several of the tracks, adding a weight and earthy physicality to the songs. “I wanted it to feel visceral and huge, but I also wanted the songs to be short. I wanted the songs on the album to be like a show, a series of vignettes, all telling a story,” explains Mingo. Funk, dub and trip-hop textures loom large, but skewed and altered just enough to keep from being straight homage. Mingo reveals that his biggest influences on the album were

“Sly Stone and Super Ape and D’Angelo,” and it shows, in the sound and the commitment to personal expression and outer-limits creativity. Talking working methods with Mingo reveals an experimental bent. “‘And So What?’ was originally built around a bachata rhythm loop and there was no bassline and I was working with samples only,” says Mingo. “I added the bassline, took the bachata loop out and then I distorted the whole track and kept distorting and exporting it and distorting it until it had this really fat sound. I put the vocals over that. I like pushing it.” The lyrics follow three interweaving, abstract storylines that Mingo spits and sings through oceans of reverb and distortion. Two of those storylines are autobiographical. For the moment, Mingo is hesitant to delve to fully into the events and emotions that inspired his lyrics. “Lyrically, I was taking a surrealist approach,” explains Mingo. “I write things in a coded way for a reason.” Many of the spoken interludes and samples that punctuate songs were recorded by Mingo himself. He’d record
conversations with customers – with their permission – while working a retail job. “I’d record people’s stories when I should have been selling them DirecTV,” laughs Mingo. “I was the worst at sales, I didn’t care.” One of T.K.T.B.’s more interesting gambits is in keeping songs to the classic pop-single length, always under three minutes. But those couple of minutes pack a heavy punch of big concepts paired to undeniable grooves. “This is the root of it. It’s Diana Ross, it’s the Supremes. That’s where it’s at. I can’t sit here and act like I have a deep understanding of Motown, but this is where it all comes from. And I listen to the Supremes and this is exactly the feel I’m going for,” says Mingo. “These are songs about a limited moment, a lived experience. These songs are timeless.” T.K.T.B. is out now on most streaming services as well as Bandcamp, with bonus material. “This is where I’m at and this is who I am,” sums up Mingo. “Don’t have any expectations going into this album, because I will flip it every time. I love doing that.”

“KINKED GAYS” I have a question. I’m a gay man in a relationship and we’re both really happy since we met a year ago. We’re “open” in the sense that he wants the option to be intimate with someone else if a connection happens and in turn he said he would be supportive of me being involved in my kinks. But I haven’t done anything yet out of fear. I’m not afraid of my kinks. I’m worried that if I ask to go do something kinky it will ruin our relationship. I don’t think he was bluffing when he said it was OK for me to explore my kinks with other guys, but it worries me. I tend to repress the kink part of my sexuality and I’m worried that him knowing I want to act on it will cause issues. My boyfriend and I are so balanced but in the kink aspects of my life I’m a submissive and need to engage in power exchange with someone. I miss being able to express these things and it feels like there’s a void in my life. That might sound silly, but it’s true. I think repressing them is actually taking a toll on my mental health. Any advice? Guy’s Abandoned Yearnings Subtly Undermining Bond If your boyfriend is bluffing, GAYSUB, you wanna know that sooner rather than later. Your still-relatively-new-ish boyfriend gave you permission to act on your kinks at the same time he asked your permission to fuck someone else. You gave him your OK and I assume you meant it, GAYSUB; you meant it when you told him he could, if and when “a connection happens,” go ahead and fuck the dude. Seeing as he took your “yes” for an answer where his “connections” are concerned, GAYSUB, I think you should take his “yes” for an answer where your kinks are concerned. So go find some hot Dom you wanna submit to and let your boyfriend know you’re gonna get your kink on. If it turns out your boyfriend was lying to you – if he’s one of those people who wants to be free to play with others (which is why he got your OK) but doesn’t want his partner playing with others (and the OK he gave you was insincere) – it’s better to find that out 12 short months into this relationship than to find it out 10 years, a mortgage, one kid and two dogs into this relationship. And what you describe about the void you feel is understandable to anyone with kinks, GAYSUB. Even vanilla people can understand if they think about it for even a moment. (That vanilla stuff you enjoy, vanilla people? Imagine never being able to do any of it. See?) Your kinks are an intrinsic aspect of your sexuality and not having any way to explore or express them does take an emotional toll. It can also breed resent30
ment if your partner is the reason you can’t explore or express them. Which means if your boyfriend wants you to be happy and wants you to be a good boyfriend to him, then you need to have the freedom to be who you are. For some kinky people porn is enough of an outlet, GAYSUB, but most kinky people want actual experiences. Often a vanilla partner is willing and able to meet a kinky partner’s needs and that’s great. But sometimes a vanilla partner can’t do it or is incapable of faking it or does it poorly on purpose so they won’t be asked to do it again. And for some kinksters the awareness you’re being indulged makes it impossible to get into the right subby headspace. If either is the case, you’ll have to outsource these desires to fill that void. If your boyfriend gives you the OK and has a little breakdown after you get home – if it dredges up some unexpected feelings (and you should expect that it will) – and needs some reassurance, that’s fine. Answer any questions he has and let him know you’re not going anywhere; indeed, the fact that you don’t have to choose between him and your kinks makes you far less likely to end this relationship. (Sometimes people who weren’t even in the dungeon during the scene need a little aftercare too.) But if you’re careful not to neglect your boyfriend sexually or emotionally and your kinky dates are just an occasional thing and your boyfriend keeps having great big dramatic meltdowns, GAYSUB, then that’s a bad sign. If he punishes you with drama every time he gives you his OK to play with someone else, then he’s hoping you’ll decide to stop seeking these experiences out because the emotional price is too great. You won’t be able to remain in this relationship if that’s what winds up happening, GAYSUB, so you’re going to wanna act on your kinks at least a half a dozen times before you get a dog or a mortgage. My new boyfriend just opened up to me about his kinks. Nothing crazy: just bondage and humiliation. While he usually meets and dates guys off kinky dating sites, we met “the old-fashioned way” a few months before COVID-19 slammed us here in Chicago: at a potluck dinner party thrown by a mutual straight lady friend. Your name came up during the conversation about his interests: He told me he was taking your advice and “laying his kink cards on the table” before I had made too much of an emotional commitment. What’s interesting to me, Dan, is how often this happens. My boyfriend is easily the fourth guy I’ve dated in the last few years who laid down the exact same

kink cards: wants to be tied up, wants to be called names, wants to be hurt. I’m learning to tie knots and getting better at calling him names when we have sex and I actually really enjoying spanking him. But I was talking with a friend – our straight lady mutual – and she told me she’s never had a straight guy open up to her about wanting to be tied up and abused. Are gay guys just kinkier? Talking Over Perversions I have a theory. When we’re boys – before we’re ready to come out – we’re suddenly attracted to other boys, and that’s something we usually feel pretty panicked about. It would be nice if that first same-sex crush was something a boy could experience without feelings of dread or terror, TOP, but that’s not how it works for most of us. We’re keenly aware that should the object of our desire realize it – if the boy we’re attracted realizes what we’re feeling, if we give ourselves away with a stray look – the odds of that boy reacting badly or even violently are high. Even if you think the boy might not react violently, even if you suspect the boy you’re crushing on might be gay himself, the stakes are too high to risk making any sort of move. So we stew with feelings of lust and fear. Sexual desire can make anyone feel fearful and powerless – we’re literally powerless to control these feelings (while we can and must control how we act on these feelings) – but desire and fear are stirred together for us gay boys to much greater degree than they are for straight boys. We fear being found out, we fear being called names, we fear being outed, we fear being physically hurt. And the person we fear most is the person we have a crush on. A significant number of gay guys wind up imprinting on that heady and very confusing mix of desire and fear. The erotic imaginations of guys like your boyfriend seize on those fears and eroticize them. And then, in adulthood, your boyfriend want to re-experience those feelings, that heady mix of desire and fear, with a loving partner he trusts. The gay boy who feared being hurt by the person he was attracted to becomes the gay man who wants to be hurt – in a limited, controlled, consensual and safe way – by the man he’s with.
