Our readers’ concerns over the reopening of schools continues to rise. After Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran announced July 6 that all Florida public schools were ordered to reopen, many (most?) parents, students and teachers have risen up to protest what they see as an unsafe, poorly-thoughtout solution. We’ve received many letters and comments – some are printed below – but this copy of an open letter to Gov. Ron DeSantis was particularly persuasive. Dear Gov. Ron DeSantis, I am just finishing my master’s degree at the University of Central Florida, and I work with incarcerated students to show them the benefits of education. As a returning citizen I know all too well the pitfalls of not having a proper education. It has taken me decades to understand this principle. I also know, even more now than ever, that my son needs socialization – but he can wait. His education can continue at home, through Zoom meetings, through virtual play dates, through educational programming provided by his teachers, and through spending time reading together. My son and his peers attend a school for special-needs children. This school is highrisk. I know the administrators are struggling greatly with how to keep our children safe while teaching; however, the majority of their time will not be spent teaching. Instead, their time will be spent corralling the children, ensuring they maintain safe distances, sanitizing and cleaning
up after every instruction period, and making sure they themselves are not succumbing to illness. I do not want to send him. We, like many others, are in a unique situation of child custody. My son travels back and forth from my home to his grandparents’ home who are both aging and at risk. It is also the only opportunity he gets to see his mother, who is also at risk. Sending my son to school right now, during this crisis, would be doing both him and his family a grave disservice, denying them the opportunity for any safe and quality visitation time. I am only one of many thousands of voices. But please know this, as a returning citizen, I do have a voice. I would like to be able to proactively use my voice to proclaim how responsive and considerate my party is and how you are acting in the best interest of the families you represent. Unfortunately, I feel that you are failing us. Please change course and think of our future. Economically, we will recover from this. We are America. Our children have the capacity to learn anywhere. There is no need to rush back and further cripple our already fragile system. Please offer remote learning as the only option. It’s the right thing to do. Respectfully, Jason Fronczek
@Mary Christian Parents have choices just as the rest of us. If you can afford not to work, stay home. Unfortunately most people can’t. WDW felt the same way, but most are already begging for their jobs. Be careful what you wish for. @Christine Kelley Of course it’s unsafe! The numbers are going to skyrocket. If a teacher or student gets the virus, then everyone who they have been in contact with, entire classroom, other school staff, etc. would have to self quarantine. Teachers would be out of work and parents who work would be forced to not work as well, to be home with their exposed or sick child. The effect will force school closures again. @Jean Alford My grandchild is overjoyed to know that her divorced parents are in total agreement that she will be attending school online only this autumn. She misses seeing her friends in person but she has more sense than the governor of FL and the president of the USA. It is not safe for the parents or the teachers to open the schools at this time. It wouldn’t be as dangerous for most children but even some healthy children get very sick or die from this. Remember, when necessary they used to close the schools during polio epidemics before the vaccine was invented. @Carrie Mackie Houser There is nothing “moral” about this state leadership! Thank you teachers for standing up for our children and yourselves! @Fernando Maldonado And how are they going to return schools to “full operation by August” when cases are spiking and ICUs throughout the state are at capacity? Are our leaders just completely disconnected from reality? @Judy Morgan Shaw I think they should strike. And I know they signed a contract. But I don’t care – no one else is living up to their agreements. @Blair Kelly Szeto Don’t worry, the schools will be shut down again before progress reports, after we are all sick and dying. I’m a teacher, and I’ll be really surprised if I don’t get COVID within the first month of reopening. @Veronica Vargas I really doubt they will open at all. The pattern is the same: cases rise, hospital capacity is overloaded/maximized, deaths. By the time August hits, we will be in the third part of the cycle thus hopefully forcing the politicians to err on the side of caution. @Terance Claudius Samms They do know if the kids get sick, then they’re out of a job or if they get sick, then their kids and spouse dies too? orlandoweekly.com

SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS
The world’s wealthiest nation is risking thousands of lives to force single mothers back to minimum-wage jobs and grease the wheels of commerce BY JE FFREY C. BIL L M A N
About 20 percent of full-time workers
– some 26 million people – have a young child at home. If schools don’t reopen this fall, many of them will face pronounced hardship. For the roughly 13 million whose partners work full time, someone has to mind the rugrats, which reduces productivity and exacerbates the gender pay gap. For the 3 million who don’t have partners at home – particularly those on the lower rungs of the socio-economic ladder – the threat is more acute. They might have already cut hours or quit altogether, scraping by on federal emergency unemployment benefits that expire in two weeks. Then what? There’s a case for reopening schools as soon as possible – prolonged closures widen educational disparities and lead to social isolation, and remote learning is less effective than in-person instruction – but this isn’t it. Rather, this is a systemic indictment: The world’s wealthiest nation is risking thousands of lives to force single mothers back to minimum-wage jobs and grease the wheels of commerce. God bless America.
Nor is it why the Trump administration is pressing to reopen schools and universities, why the president is complaining that CDC guidelines for doing so – social distancing, physical barriers, avoiding communal meals, staggering arrival and dismissal times, shutting down following confirmed cases – are “very tough & expensive,” or why Immigration and Customs Enforcement is grotesquely threatening to deport immigrant students whose universities don’t hold in-person classes. Yes, President Trump is concerned about the economy; a better economy would boost his electoral fortunes. That logic has driven his handling of the pandemic from the outset, to disastrous effect. But his urgency is more cynical than that. Trump gave away the game last week when he threatened to “cut off funding” to schools that don’t open: “In Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and many other countries,” he tweeted, “SCHOOLS ARE OPEN WITH NO PROBLEMS.” That’s mostly true. But Sweden now tallies fewer than 300 new COVID cases a day. Denmark has just a few people being treated for the illness. On Saturday, Germany had
224 new COVID cases and four deaths, while Norway had three new cases and no deaths. That day, the United States reported 61,739 new COVID cases and 732 deaths. One of these things is not like the others. Indeed, only one of these countries has a leader who has suggested the pandemic will vanish, who admitted to suppressing testing, who demanded that businesses open when it was obviously unsafe to do so, who for months refused to wear a mask and who publicly battles his own health officials. And only one has a leader resisting the basic precautions experts say are necessary for schools to reopen. Here we come to the heart of things. Every day that schools remain closed – every canceled football game or school dance, every time a screaming 6-year-old interrupts her mother’s Zoom conference – serves as a tangible reminder that Trump failed the biggest test of his presidency. It’s too late to change the realities on the ground – the almost 140,000 dead, the 60,000-plus new cases a day – or try to reclaim the role of crisis manager. If the election is about the pandemic, he loses. To avoid that fate, Trump needs to change the subject. To do that, he needs us to get used to living with the pandemic. To grow numb to it. To believe that, though he hasn’t slain the dragon, it won’t bother us if we pretend it doesn’t exist. In other words, he needs everything to appear normal, even if that appearance will extract a horrific cost. Even if his road to re-election is lined with caskets. Think of it as strategic sociopathy. Or as Education Secretary Betsy DeVos might put it, suck it up, buttercup. “Kids need to get back in the classroom,” she told CNN on Sunday. “We’re a nation of action. We’re a country of doers.” (Apologies to the “doers” currently six feet under.) It’s true, as DeVos pointed out, that young people seldom die from COVID, and that very young children seem to transmit it less frequently than adults. But we don’t know how much less frequently, and we do know that kids and teenagers can spread the virus. As of last week, for example, Texas had recorded more than 550 cases among children under age 9. And in late June, two summer camps in Georgia closed after 85 campers (ages 7-14) and counselors (16-22) tested positive for the coronavirus. If nothing else, school outbreaks will endanger more susceptible adults – parents, grandparents and, of course, teachers. Because of age and comorbidities, in fact, a quarter of U.S. teachers are at high risk from COVID, to say nothing of bus drivers, janitors or cafeteria workers. And if you think college students are going to socially distance at parties or wear a mask in between keg stands, your faith in 18-year-olds vastly exceeds mine. The White House knows it’s courting disaster – more infections, more hospitalizations and, yes, more deaths. The science is unambiguous. This isn’t a gamble made on insufficient information. It’s a political gambit wagering thousands of lives to project an illusion. Trump needs normalcy. Since he can’t have that, the appearance of normalcy will have to suffice. Someone else can deal with the consequences. Don’t worry. Be happy. Never mind the bodies. Vote Trump. Get Informed Dissent delivered to your inbox: billman. substack.com.

JUST WEAR THE DAMN MASK
Wearing masks shouldn’t be controversial, but here we are. Cloth face coverings help curb the spread of the coronavirus — scientists provide the data BY T INA HESMA N SA EY
T
o mask or not to mask? To the dismay of many public health experts, that remains a question up for debate in the United States even as the coronavirus pandemic
rages on. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended that everyone wear masks when in public to curb the spread of COVID-19. But as lockdowns have lifted, many people haven’t followed that advice, and case numbers are rising in some states.
In response, some states like California have made wearing face coverings mandatory in public. But in Nebraska, the governor has blocked city- and county-level efforts to require wearing masks in public. Other states, such as Florida, recommend, but don’t require face coverings in public, though some counties within the state are requiring masks. At the individual level, some people have protested that their personal freedoms are being infringed upon by being told to cover their mouths and noses. Others are masking up whenever they leave their homes. Meanwhile, scientists have been collecting data on whether cloth masks worn by members of the general public can cut down on the spread of the coronavirus. Journalists at Science News, a 100-year-old independent nonprofit science magazine, rounded up the latest data and talked to experts about how well these masks really protect against the coronavirus.
“WHY ARE MASKS NOW RECOMMENDED BY PUBLIC HEALTH EXPERTS?”
At the beginning of the outbreak, public health officials thought that the virus was primarily transmitted by people touching contaminated objects or surfaces and then touching their face. Regular handwashing and refraining from touching your face were the main prescriptions. The CDC and the World Health Organization both at first said that healthy people didn’t need to wear masks. But it has become clear that contact with virus-laden objects isn’t the major way that the coronavirus passes from person to person, says immunologist Robert Quigley. He is senior vice president and regional medical director of International SOS, a company based in Trevose, Pennsylvania, that helps devise strategies for mitigating medical and security risks. Instead, researchers now think COVID-19 is spread mainly by someone inhaling the virus expelled by another person. That explains the reasoning behind the CDC’s recommendation that everyone
wear a mask in public: The covering may lessen the risk of mask wearers who don’t know they’re infected from passing the virus to someone else. “We believe now that we are learning more about this novel virus, that there is transmission from asymptomatic individuals,” Quigley says. Studies have determined that people can transmit the virus for a couple of days before symptoms start, and that some people who never develop symptoms can be contagious. In Singapore, researchers used contacttracing data to estimate that about 40 to 50 percent of COVID-19 cases from Jan. 23 to Feb. 26 were transmitted by people who weren’t yet having symptoms. The same team found that in Tianjin, China, the amount of such presymptomatic transmission was even higher. From Jan. 21 to Feb. 22, 60 to 80 percent of cases were attributed to spread before symptoms appeared, the researchers report June 22 in the science journal eLife. Since even seemingly healthy people can spread COVID-19 if they’re infected but don’t know it, health officials now recommend that everyone wear masks in public.
“IS THERE EVIDENCE THAT A CLOTH MASK CAN BLOCK VIRUS SPREAD?”
Matthew Staymates, a mechanical engineer and fluid dynamicist at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland, usually works on devising ways to detect narcotics and other illicit substances in the air. But while he was on mandatory telework, Staymates found he missed doing experiments. So he convinced his supervisors to let him bring home some equipment orlandoweekly.com

so he could evaluate whether cloth masks cut down on the number of potentially virus-laden particles that spew from people’s mouths and noses when they talk, cough or breathe. He set up the apparatus in his woodshop and filmed himself coughing without and with a mask. He ultimately tested 26 types of cloth mask, including ones made from common sewing fabrics like lightweight flannel, cotton T-shirts, quilting cotton, cotton-polyester blends and polypropylene from reusable shopping bags. Staymates didn’t use any viruses in his experiments, so he can’t say whether one type of mask does a better job of catching viruses than another. But using high-speed visualizations, he could determine which masks blocked the trajectory of air coming from his lungs when he coughed or talked. Wearing any face covering, including bandanas or neck warmers, could at least partially block the cloud of droplets released in a cough, the experiment showed. Masks that are fitted to the nose, cheeks and chin did a better job of blocking droplet flow, and, theoretically, of stopping viruses, too, Staymates describes in a blog post on the NIST website. Provided that people wear the masks properly, that is. “At one point, I pulled my mask down below my nose in the video” and coughed, he says. The video showed a jet of air streaming from his nose as he coughed. “I was stunned when I saw that footage,” he says. “I was really surprised at how much air comes out of your nose when you cough.” Now when he sees people with their masks covering their mouths, but not their noses, “I [think] ‘No. Don’t do that. You’re defeating the purpose,’” he says. CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

“DOES A CLOTH MASK PREVENT ME FROM CATCHING THE VIRUS FROM SOMEONE ELSE?”
Alone, cloth masks aren’t great at protecting the wearer, says Abba Gumel, a mathematical biologist at Arizona State University in Tempe. Cloth masks can vary widely in the amount of particles, including virus, they prevent from reaching the mask wearer. The best cloth masks, which are fitted to the face and made of optimal materials, might block up to 80 percent of particles, while most – especially masks that aren’t fitted properly, or made of flimsy material – filter out only about 20 to 50 percent of particles, he says. But even the lowest efficiency mask “is still better than nothing,” Gumel says. Cloth masks are for protecting other people from you, Quigley stresses. “Let’s make no bones about it; the cloth mask is not anywhere near as effective in preventing one from inhaling the coronavirus compared with a medical-grade N95 mask,” he says. Surgical masks may block 70 to 90 percent of infectious particles from reaching the wearer, and N95 masks filter out more than 95 percent, Gumel says. Medical-grade N95 masks have been in short supply and should be reserved for health care workers and others who are high risk of being exposed to the coronavirus, he and other experts agree. Masks are better at shielding others from the mask wearer than at protecting the wearer because when someone wearing a face covering breathes, talks, coughs or sneezes, most of the air carrying any potential viruses is filtered through the mask, increasing the chances of catching most of the infectious particles. Inhaling while wearing a mask that doesn’t form a seal on the face may draw in unfiltered air from the sides, top or bottom, as well as air filtered through the mask.
even if face masks are only 50 percent effective, researchers report June 10 in the British physical sciences journal Proceedings of Royal Society A. And even though masks are less effective at protecting the wearer, personal protection went up as a greater percentage of people wore masks in the researchers’ calculations. That’s because “my mask protects you, your mask protects me,” the researchers write, so more mask wearing means greater protection for everybody. Some real-world data also suggest masks are effective at helping curb the spread of the coronavirus. George Wehby and Wei Lyu, health policy researchers at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, tracked daily coronavirus case counts in 15 states and Washington, D.C., that mandated face coverings for the general public in some settings like grocery stores, during the study period from April 8 to May 15. The pair also monitored case counts in states that required masks only for essential employees, such as restaurant workers, health care providers and police or firefighters. States that required everyone to wear masks saw small, but steady declines in daily case counts after instituting the mandate compared with counts in the one to five days before the mandates took effect, the researchers report June 16 in the journal Health Affairs.
By the time mask orders had been in place for 21 days, daily case counts had declined by 2 percentage points. An estimated 230,000 to 450,000 coronavirus cases may have been prevented between April 8 and May 22 because people wore masks, the team calculates. The researchers accounted for shelter-in-place orders and other public health measures, but can’t say for sure that masks are the sole reason for the decline, Wehby says. Requiring employees, but not the general public, to wear masks didn’t lower case counts, the researchers found. But that might be because businesses are often already requiring employees to wear masks, so the state mandates are just enforcing measures that are already in place. “There’s a general consensus now that masks work, and research is supporting that,” Wehby says. “Going forward, masks are an alternative to some of the strict social distancing measures. They don’t replace [social distancing], but where social distancing cannot be enacted, mask use makes common sense.” Gumel agrees. “If everybody wore a face mask, we’d be doing a lot better.” feedback@sciencenews.org
“DOES EVERYBODY NEED TO WEAR A MASK?”
There is strength in numbers, Gumel and colleagues found. In simulations of epidemics with a low rate of transmission, widespread mask wearing is “very, very effective at reducing hospitalizations and mortality,” he says. If half the population wore masks that block half of particles, transmission rates could also be roughly halved, Gumel and colleagues report April 21 in the journal Infectious Disease Modeling. Even low-effectiveness cloth masks that block only 20 percent of viral particles could cut transmission rates by a third, provided 80 percent of people wore the coverings, the researchers estimate. In areas where transmission rates are high, if 80 percent of people wore masks that block half of infectious particles, 17 to 45 percent of projected deaths over two months might be prevented, the researchers calculate. Those calculations are in line with estimates made by other scientists. Epidemics could be brought under control if everyone wore a mask all the time when in public, orlandoweekly.com

meet-and-greets and live shows are all still on hiatus. Instead, they’ve substituted frequent mini-parades and balcony appearances where long-distance selfies with the characters can be captured; Cinderella’s stepsisters snarking on guests from the castle’s parapet is priceless. I’m a self-admitted lifelong theme park junkie, and obviously not entirely unbiased. So for a different perspective, I turned to Genevieve Bernard, an attractions agnostic who ordinarily insists on exiting any amusement park after four hours, but who agreed to endure an entire Disney day with me in the name of journalism (and also because she’s my wife): “I’m usually overwhelmed by the supercrowded WDW experience and have been known to call it ‘Miserable Disney.’ But there were silver linings that I hope Disney keeps and builds upon. At this time one year ago,
Disney’s theme parks were experiencing historically high attendance, and I was there in the midst of the mob, cursing the crushing crowds. I fantasized about returning to a time decades ago, before the attractions became overrun with guests, when you could walk into your favorite rides and restaurants without booking FastPasses and dining reservations months in advance. Well, be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. Last week, I returned to the Magic Kingdom for the first time since the coronavirus quarantine closed down the Walt Disney World resort in March, and the experience exceeded my wildest dreams
while simultaneously evoking my darkest nightmares.
After five weeks of watching how Universal Orlando has handled social distancing in their parks, I thought I had a pretty good handle on how Disney would cope with COVID-19. But after attending both an annual passholder preview and the park’s official public reopening, it’s apparent that the Mouse has put that extra month to good use. The differences between Universal’s and Disney’s safety protocols are subtle yet significant, and they may make the difference between whether you choose to return to the magic or remain distanced from Disney. Many of the same basic health precautions are observed at all of Orlando’s major attractions: touch-free temperature

checks before entry, mandatory face masks for everyone, stepped-up sanitizing, and markers reminding everyone to stay separated by at least six feet. But Mickey has taken these measures a step further.
Guests’ masks must be two-ply with ear loops (my preferred neck gaiter is verboten) while cast members wear both masks and transparent full-face shields, making them look like members of a dystopian empire. Switchback queues have been converted into claustrophobic mazes of plexiglass walls, and ride vehicles are regularly stopped and sprayed down with disinfectant. Every trash can carries a safety reminder, and multiple times each hour the cheerful background music is broken
into by announcements encouraging hand hygiene. As if to compensate for all those realworld intrusions into the “most magical place on earth,” Disney has drastically limited the park’s attendance, leaving it emptier than I’ve seen since the days after 9/11. I easily experienced over a dozen of the Magic Kingdom’s top attractions in under eight hours, never waiting more than 30 minutes for a ride, and often walking right on to headliners like Space Mountain and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Disney’s princesses apparently refuse to wear masks, and the standoff with the Actors Equity performers’ union over testing continues, so the park’s usual orlandoweekly.com

to avoid people coming at you, and you could see where you were walking in front of you. I noticed and experienced more decor, colors and landscaping because I could see them, and I actually enjoyed walking through the park! “Social distancing markers in lines made the experience more positive, and I hope they stay forever. It definitely felt like everyone was on their best behavior, and it was nice to not have people on top of you all of the time. No park-hopping, no scheduled events, open space and social distancing all made for less anxiety and less manufactured FOMO, which I felt made an overall more pleasant experience even with a mask on. “Having said all that, I was very nervous about going, and with virus numbers increasing, I’ll wait a while before I return.” Disney has admirably gone above and beyond in many ways, and although there are still some gaps (they need more maskoptional relaxation areas, and I wish they’d require every rider to use hand sanitizer like Universal does, rather than simply making it available), I felt safer spending a day at Disney than an hour in my local supermarket. In fact, the most aggravating part of this eerily utopian “new normal” is that paidin-full annual passholders are sold out from the park’s new required reservations system until sometime in August, while day guests can still walk up to the ticket windows and purchase admission. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com JULY 15-21, 2020 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

Barbecue buffs are flocking to a Citgo Quik Mart for Git-N-Messy’s smoked goods BY FAIYAZ KARA
A
s a neophyte fry cook at Hardee’s, an eager Chuck Cobb dipped his digits into a vat of hot oil used to fry chicken in what turned out to be an accidental act of self-hazing. He recounts the days of his first restaurant job from his barbecue stall inside a Citgo Quik Mart while prepping (what else?) a Nashville hot chicken sandwich ($9.99). He wiggles his fingers, sheepishly grins my way, then tosses the double-fried chicken thighs in a hot lard-butter emulsion. I try hard not to stare at Cobb’s crazyass tats, willfully looking away for a moment to fidget with my mask and check the spacing markers taped to the floor. He looks up: “These pineapple buns are from Douce France Bakery,” he gushes as he layers on the chicken, splurts on some chipotle ranch, spoons a heap of peach slaw and finishes it off with pickles and a squeeze of Mike’s hot honey. When he adds the bun on top, the result is nothing short of a colossus of cock. Hell, I wasn’t sure how the lid of the to-go container was going to close over this edible towering inferno of chicken, but Cobb managed it. Somehow, the monstrosity wasn’t the least bit squished when I got home. In
fact, the sandwich – and its sweet, crunchy burn – held together quite nicely, at least for the first handful of bites. After that, it turned into a conflagration of chaos and, damn if I didn’t enjoy every sloppy bite. It’s the Git-NMessy way, after all. As Cobb prepped a half-rack of St. Louisstyle ribs ($15.99), he talked about how Art Smith’s father would come into that very same Hardee’s in Jasper, Florida, every morning asking Cobb to make him a breakfast sandwich. When the elder Smith spoke of his celebrity chef son, Cobb had absolutely no clue who he was talking about. But that was long before Cobb trekked the long and winding road of gastronomy, a road that took him to Le Cordon Bleu followed by gigs at Pig Floyd’s, Sushi Pop and Vera Asian, among others. He even ran a high-end, pop-up omakase concept called Zoetic Sushi in Sanford prior to opening Git-N-Messy. So he’s got gifts, no doubt, including the gift of gab, but one thing’s certain – the man can work a smoker.
The menacing beast of black steel fueled by aged oak is parked in the lot outside, next to his truck. Four hours is about all it takes to churn out the gnaw-worthy ribs. I brushed aside the barbecue sauce – the meaty cage simply stood on its own. Chat with Cobb a little more and you’ll learn that “fall off the bone” is not a texture he aims for in his meats, be it the ribs or his 16-hour smoked brisket ($13, half-pound). He prefers a balanced ratio of flesh to fat, which is precisely what you’ll find in that brisket, along with a peppery bark that’s got a fair amount of bite. Fret not, all you Texans – the meat passes the bend test. Canadians will undoubtedly find the Southern poutine ($13) to be an unholy mess of blasphemy. Sidewinder fries? Cheese sauce? Don’t even get me started on the cole slaw, the pulled pork or the sea of barbecue sauce. This is the Ted Cruz of poutine – it’s just plain uncomfortable to look at, but unlike the Canadian-born senator from Texas, a helluva lot easier to stomach. And pairing it with a heap of angle-cut pieces of jalapeño-cheddar smoked sausage ($7) gave me all the Boss Hogg feels. I knew that all-white suit would come in handy one day. Back to Boss Cobb: You have to admire his grit and determination. He’s serving topnotch barbecue from a less-than-ideal space while steadily building a legion of hard-core fans. He’s the real deal, Rosco, and I’m not just blowing smoke. fkara@orlandoweekly.com
the diningin diaries BY FAIYAZ KARA The thought of takeout sushi amid 95-degree temperatures and a pandemic successfully quelled the cravings I’ve had for raw seafood – until now. Those cravings proved too persistent these past few weeks, and when I saw the trio behind Kadence offering a takeout menu, I thought, who better to get takeout sushi from than one of the best restaurants in the city? So I placed an order for a chirashi bowl, royal red shrimp miso soup, a slice of charamisu cake and a can of Funaguchi Gold sake. I picked up it up at 6:15 p.m. and 25 minutes later, was digging into the vinegared rice bowl teeming with hamachi, kanpachi, madai, shima aji, bluefin tuna, ora king salmon, kisu and hirame. Ikura dotted the assemblage, and nuka-pickled veggies (watermelon rind, cucumber, daikon) added a little crunch. The soup, graced with slivers of shiitake, made a wonderfully light accompaniment, and the matcha/strawberry-soaked sponge and mascarpone layer cake (served inside an oh-so-cute box!) provided a rich-enough ending. Cutting through it all was the Funaguchi, but you can choose from a selection of more than 20 different sakes to take home. Just be sure to order your food and drink early (noon is the deadline) as they tend to run out early. Like most restaurants, dine-in comprised the majority of sales at Kadence, but with the dining room closed, Lordfer Lalicon tells me, they’re doing about 20 percent of the business that they’re used to and they’re doing it with a skeleton staff. “Things are definitely worse,” he says, “but we’re surviving. Luckily we’re used to running the restaurant with just the three of us.” (Kadence, 1809 Winter Park Road, kadenceorlando.com)

CHICKEN FIRE
The legendary Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack is the inspiration behind food truck owner Kwame Boakye’s flamin’-hot birds. He even plops them atop white bread and serves them with pickles, just like Prince’s. Boakye serves tenders in “soulful” (no heat), “mild” (spicy), “medium” (more spicy), “hot” (really spicy), “hot x2” (infernal) and “hot infinity” (poof!). Chicken Fire is at East End Market, 3201 Corrine Drive, for the month of July. (reviewed July 1) 813-4854088, facebook.com/eatchickenfire, $$
HOUNDSTOOTH KITCHEN & EATERY
Maitland City Centre sandwich joint, itself sandwiched between Boku Sushi and Sanford Brewing, specializes in pressed sandwiches, soups and other takeoutfriendly fare. THE OSPREY SEAFOOD & SPIRITS
The pandemic forced owners Jason and Sue Chin to change Osprey’s concept from new American cuisine to seafood, and it’s a change for the better. Chef Anthony Watler, under the direction of Reyes Mezcaleria’s Wendy Lopez, presents everything from cioppino to lobster rolls to skin-on trout with hoppin’ john. Oysters are great any time of year, but particularly during happy hour when they’re $1. Baked Alaska is an absolute must. Closed Mondays. TABLA WINTER PARK
Tabla’s Winter Park outpost is a fetching space with equally fetching fare thanks to chef Sajan Prem. The man is easily the finest chef of Indian cookery the city has, and he’s as deft with street staples (the pani puri is a must) as he is with tandoori items (the lamb chops are the plushest) and curries (the palak ghosht with bone-in goat is, as Russell Peters would say, “mind-blasting.”) Don’t ever leave without trying the sticky toffee pudding. MANZANO’S DELI
Winter Park sub shop serves meaty, prodigious sandwiches using Boar’s Head meats and cheeses along with bâtard bread rolls flown in from artisan bakery Tribeca Oven in New Jersey. FARM & HAUS
Patrick and Brittany Lyne serve farmfresh “healthy comfort food” out of their East End Market stall to great success. ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO
Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss by Steve Schneider PREMIERES THURSDAY: The House of Ho – When Crazy Rich Asians became a breakout hit, industry-watchers predicted that representation of Asians in the media was about to skyrocket. Cue me, under my breath: “Just as long as they’re rich.” Sure enough, here comes The House of Ho, a docuseries about Vietnamese-born banking/real estate magnate Binh Ho and his family. I’m waiting with bated breath for the season finale, in which the kids will doubtless leak Dad’s tax returns to the New York Times. ’Cause that’s how we roll over here, Hos! (HBO Max) Indian Matchmaking – Pitched as an old-fashioned alternative to today’s app-based dating culture, this eight-episode reality series sees matchmaker Sima Tiparia helping young clients find a mate via “the methods of the past.” Which I can only take as a sick burn at Patti Stanger. HHHHH
Lake of Death – A woman makes a pilgrimage to the death site of her twin brother in the second filmed adaptation of Norway’s seminal horror novel, which was first published all the way back in 1942. I guess now we know where all that Norwegian death metal came from. (Shudder) Fatal Affair – Nia Long plays a lawyer who dallies with a man (Omar Epps) who isn’t her husband, only to become the target of his violent fixation. Hmm, that sure sounds like something else we’ve seen. Something that also had “fatal” in the title. Oh, well; at least this time any bunny that gets boiled will be seasoned properly. (Netflix)
PREMIERES FRIDAY: Absentia Season 3 – FBI agent Emily Byrne is back, teaming up with her ex-husband to take on a criminal enterprise with a global reach. Meanwhile, you can’t even get your S.O. to wipe down the damn Peloton now that he’s home all the time. (Amazon Original Series) Cursed – Forty-five years after Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it’s still just about impossible to think of the Lady of the Lake as anything other than a moistened bint lobbing scimitars. Yet Netflix seems to think there’s dramatic life left in the concept of strange women lying in ponds and distributing swords. This new series explores the backstory of that farcical aquatic ceremony, checking in on the watery tart when she’s still a teenager and preparing for her destiny as the enabler of Arthur, King of the Britons. I dunno, maybe she’s practicing by hurling a French-fry fork at a crossing guard or something. (Netflix) Father Soldier Son – Remember when we told you that the New York Times company’s dramatic feature about a military family was going to be premiering in June? Well, please accept our heartfelt apologies for being the only people this year who’ve lied to you. (Netflix) Kissing Game – Straight from today’s headlines comes a Brazilian series about teenagers who are thrown into a panic by a contagion that’s transmitted via simple kissing. Listen, if I thought an active amorous life was the only way to catch the ’vid, I’d be sleeping a lot better at night. You too, huh? (Netflix)

FULL CIRCLE Shanghai freak-punks Round Eye have a new album out … and deep Orlando roots BY MATTHEW MOYER
F
rom Shanghai, China, expatriate freak-punks Round Eye are, against all odds, having a pretty damn good July. The band just released their fourth full-length, Culture Shock Treatment, on July 3, a manic, hairy, discordant, art-rock explosion that was produced by the Minutemen’s Mike Watt. According to the band, it’s a “protest record,” an expansive and strange sonic stew with a sharp lyrical focus on the state of human rights in China and Hong Kong. And as I write this, Round Eye are currently on a tour of China. Yes, there are DIY punk shows in China right now. It’s a wonder what masks and proper health policies and precautions can do. (Thanks for fucking nothing, Gov. DeSantis.) Despite their faraway home base, Round Eye has deep Florida roots. The new record is out on Paper + Plastic – Less Than Jake’s Gainesville-based imprint – and vocalist Chachy (né Craig Englund) was a familiar face in Orlando’s underground, playing with SuperAids and fronting unpredictable local avant-punk band Libyan Hit Squad in the early 2000s. (At one point during
our interview he laments missing “Wally’s, Hungry Howie’s pizza [Cajun crust] and Will’s Pub”). But Round Eye has been his main musical concern since relocating to Shanghai. Round Eye has fit in well with the DIY underground in China, touring on their own, organizing shows and regularly hosting international acts from the Dickies to Descendents. They’ve played all over the world, filmed a guerrilla music video in North Korea, and collaborated with Joe Bob Briggs, so that’s pretty much all boxes ticked. Chachy emailed back and forth with Orlando Weekly as Round Eye’s tour (ahem, TOUR) got started. What’s daily life like in Shanghai in the time of coronavirus? My daily life … In February, my life as it is now was completely different. No shops, bars, movie theaters, anything. All food was delivered to me via apps. The delivery person would leave the parcel at a designated area in the front of the compound. Everything was sterilized. Everything was very quiet. Life as I knew it stopped dead in
its tracks. But we all understood the situation. … These days things have returned to normal, sort of. If you want to ride the subway you have to wear a mask. However, things have curbed so much and the numbers are so low now that as of late April, Shanghai has seemed more like its former self. Movie theaters are still closed, the country’s borders are still closed or only open to very limited travel, and masks and QR health codes are still a very constant necessity but aside from that, all is well. Culture Shock Treatment’s lyrics are closer to home this time … With this record I felt we had to focus on China. It’s been the elephant in the room since we started the band. The last record, Monstervision, focused on the U.S. elections with the ascension of Trump. This one, we had to address Xi Jinping, Hong Kong, Xinjiang, and the advancement of the totalitarian state China has created for itself and how that has affected the world via its paper fist of hard cash. Frankly, we felt it’d be disingenuous, cowardly and wrong to ignore China. I mean … we live here and have been here for 10 years. What was it like recording the album with Mike Watt? I think I can speak for the band when I say that Watt is a hero to all of us. His philosophy of creating music, touring, networking and “jamming econo” is gospel to us. The connection to Watt was Steve Mackay [sax player for the Stooges and former sax man for Round Eye]. It was a long orlandoweekly.com

time coming as Watt and Round Eye toured the mainland of China back in 2017 and we’d see Watt every time we played the U.S. One night after a gig in Pedro we talked to him about producing our next record. We didn’t really know if he did that sort of thing, but I knew he produced his solo records and a lot of the Minutemen/fIREHOSE stuff and we all loved that immensely. He was gracious enough to accept and – this was a total trip to us – was happy we asked! When you work with a guy like that, you really get a sense of how things operated in the SST camp: no frills, no bullshit rock star self-indulgence, no jerking off, just rock that shit and get the fuck out. Tell me about the Shanghai quarantine show you did. When China shut down there was absolutely nothing to do but stay in your home and wait for word from the government. I’m sure you’re experiencing something similar to that in the States now. In March, the owners of a very popular club here in Shanghai that Round Eye frequents called Yu Yin Tang (YYT) were working with the social media platform Bili Bili to try and find a way to keep their patrons and fans of live music connected … They decided to commandeer the club and stream live events to keep a sort of connection to the former patrons or the club and keep live music around. They asked us – I believe we were the second band, I could be wrong on that, but it was very, very early – and we loved the idea and were dying to play together again so accepted. Thousands of people tuned in. It was actually a really great moment. You understood the gravity of how important live music actually was to the audience as they had the means of commenting while it was streaming and we received so much love that night. So glad gig-goers and us are back in the same room again. You’ll be touring in July? Happening right now. There are a few hotspots we can’t go to, places like Xinjiang (this one I doubt it’s the virus, probably the Muslim concentration camp remodelizations … gotta keep up with the aesthetic trends, man), Heilongjianand, Wuhan but aside from that all is OK. We’ve been playing live shows since May and they went very well: packed houses, good times, masks and virusless. Still checking QR health codes and temperatures and writing down ID/passport numbers at the front of the bar but things are good. Our tour will take us to Hefei, Qingdao, Chongqing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Tianjin. All of these cities do not require a 14-day quarantine time so we’re all clear for travel. mmoyer@orlandoweekly.com JULY 15-21, 2020 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

“UNPLUGGED” My wife asked me to write to you about our situation. We’ve been married for 15 years. I am a submissive male and I like to play with my ass using different sized dildos. I enormously enjoy being penetrated with sex toys. A few years ago I introduced the idea of a FLR – female-led relationship – to my wife and she accepted it. My wife is more on the traditional side of sex and I respect that. We have PIV sex twice a week and I try to give her pleasure as much as I can. But recently she complained that I have stopped ejaculating when we have sex. And it’s true: When we engage in vaginal penetration, I no longer ejaculate. I like it this way because I don’t lose my sex drive and I can continue. But she doesn’t like it. For her my ejaculate is the “cherry on top” of the sex and my coming during sex is important for her pleasure and satisfaction. My wife thinks that I stopped ejaculating because I developed the habit of pleasuring myself with dildos and butt plugs in the shower. Do you think it’s true? If that’s the case, what should we do? I love my wife but I also love my butt plugs and dildos. Spouse Unpleased By Husband’s Un Blasts You should come in your wife. If your wife is in charge – you proposed a “female-led relationship” and she accepted – then she gets to give the orders and you’re supposed to do what she says. (Within reason, of course.) So when she says, “Come in me,” you should say, “How high up your vaginal canal would you like me to come?” Even if you weren’t in a female-led relationship, SUBHUB, refusing to come in your wife when you know that feeling you come inside her is important to her pleasure is a weirdly literal kind of withholding behavior – and considering how GGG your wife has been, SUBHUB, refusing to come in her so you can “continue” presumably without her isn’t something a loving submissive would do. It’s something a selfish asshole does. Your wife doubtless suspects the same thing I do: You aren’t coming in her because you’d rather blow your load in the shower. She sees you when you slip out of bed to go cram sex toys in your ass and blow your load down the down the drain instead of finishing in her. And if that’s what you’re doing – and I’m pretty sure that’s what you’re doing – then you’re treating PIV sex with your wife as foreplay and the time you spend alone with your ass toys as the main event. If I were your wife, SUBHUB, I would find that annoying too. And however much you love your plugs and dildos, I would hope you love your wife more. At any rate, you aren’t submissive to your plugs and 30
dildos – you’re submissive to your wife, who isn’t made of silicone and who has needs and feelings that have to be taken into account. At the very least, SUBHUB, your wife’s pleasure should be your first priority during PIV sex – and it’s not like you can’t combine PIV with a little butt play. You can always shove one of your beloved plugs in your ass before you have PIV sex with the wife. And if you didn’t refrain from ejaculating every single time you had PIV, if it was something you were allowed to once in a while with your wife’s permission, she might be willing to accommodate your desire every 10th time you have PIV. I am a 53-year-old guy. Since I’ve been struggling with depression and anxiety all my life, I’ve never been in a situation where sex was a possibility. I’m really dying to know what it’s like. I’ve gotten much better over the years and the women who know me think the world of me. But they aren’t in a position to help me out. Other women seem to want someone much more outgoing and confident than I am or ever will be. Confidence comes from experience and I don’t have any. My one girlfriend could not hide the fact that my inexperience offended her. Other people on blogs and such have recommended a prostitute. But that’s not really what I’m looking for. It’s about more than sex. I want someone to care for me as I am. Is there hope for me? Or has the world just left me behind? Very Inexperienced Relationship Guy In Need I know it’s not what you want to hear, VIRGIN, but I agree with other people on blogs and such: I think you should find a sex worker. Find a nice, patient woman who does sex work and be completely upfront about why you’re seeing her: You’re so painfully self-conscious about your sexual inexperience that you find it hard to date. It may take some searching, VIRGIN, but there are sex workers who want to help their clients grow and heal. “Many people have the stereotypical misconception that all sex workers are disconnected, uncaring and only there for the money,” says Ruby Ryder, a sex worker and sex educator. “While money is indeed a part of it, many of us understand that human beings need touch, connection and acceptance. We provide an opportunity for clients to be vulnerable, whether it’s fulfilling their kinky fantasies or simply having sex.” And while the relationship you have with a sex worker you might see regularly for a year or two is certainly transactional, VIRGIN, it’s
ORLANDO WEEKLY ● JULY 15-21, 2020 ● orlandoweekly.com
still a relationship and about more than sex. I’m not suggesting you see sex workers exclusively for the rest of your life (even if I’m not not suggesting that either), VIRGIN, I’m only suggesting you see a sex worker to find out what sex is like, gain a little selfconfidence and maybe feel a little more hopeful for your future. I’m a longtime reader who’s never had a question that your archives couldn’t answer. But there is something I wanted to share with you and your readers! My wife and I have incorporated virtual reality (VR) goggles into our sex life with great success, Dan, and they could be the answer to a range of questions that you get at the column. They’re so useful, in fact, that your failure to mention them is starting to look like a glaring omission! Because let’s say someone writes in who wants to open their relationship or explore a cuckold fantasy (like one of last week’s letter writers!) but they’re worried about the emotions involved, potential STIs or COVID-19? VR goggles! While the offerings for female POV VR porn are pretty paltry, I’ve never seen my wife come harder than she did with me inside her and a pair of goggles on her face giving her the perspective of a man getting fucked by a beautiful trans woman. I love the idea that this turns her on and I actually think she looks hot with goggles on! Besides the cost of a subscription to a VR porn site, the financial barrier is really pretty low – most people can use their smartphone and a $20 headset to get started, which is much cheaper than seeing a sex worker and much less time consuming than engineering a consenting affair. And there’s no risk of STIs or COVID-19! Just wanted you to consider VR as a possibly overlooked tool for your otherwise always-outstanding advice in the future! Very Recent Purchase Optimizes Reality Nicely Thank you for writing in, VRPORN, and you’re right: VR porn sounds like a great way for an adventurous monogamous couple to have a little virtual variety – whether that couple is monogamous by choice or monogamous for the duration of this stupid pandemic. In addition to the technology, of course, you’ll need a partner who not only knows you fantasize about other people (like they do, like everybody does), but who’s also excited about helping you explore those fantasies. Thanks again for sharing, VRPORN! Listen to Dan and comedian Jay Jurden on the Lovecast! savagelovecast.com mail@savagelove.net
