THE TRUTH ISN’T UNIFYING Congressional Republicans have only as much power as Democrats give them. Democrats should give them none BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N
Joe Biden hadn’t finished his first full day as president before Sean Hannity declared that he’d had a “disastrous first week.” This blunt-force stupidity is nothing new for Donald Trump’s lickspittle in chief, and not unexpected as Rupert Murdoch’s Pravda struggles to claw back viewers from the conspiracy loons at Newsmax and OANN. What’s interesting, however, is what prompted the Fox News host’s snap judgment: Biden did what he promised. He brought the U.S. back into the Paris climate accord and the World Health Organization. He stopped the Keystone XL Pipeline and the border wall. He froze new fossil fuel extraction permits on federal lands. He rescinded Trump’s travel ban and expanded protections for LGBTQ people. He paused most deportations and released a comprehensive immigration proposal with an eight-year path to citizenship. To go along with a $1.9 trillion COVID relief package, he offered the detailed pandemic plan Trump never bothered to produce. If you paid attention during the campaign, none of these things was surprising. Given what Biden inherited — an accelerating climate crisis, a pandemic killing 4,000 Americans a day, a nonexistent vaccination plan, an economy on the brink of a double-dip recession, rising far-right extremism — they’re hardly radical, either. To listen to Republicans, however, you’d think he handed down a Five Year Plan. What’s exasperating isn’t the bad-faith campaign to redefine “socialism” to mean “spending money to help people during a crisis” or “regulating industries that are destroying the planet.” Republicans have done that my entire life. Rather — as we discussed last time — it’s rede12
fining “unity” to mean “don’t do anything we don’t like.” Take, for example, Sen. Marco Rubio, a Florida robot who has yet to be reprogrammed for the post-Trump era: “A radical leftist agenda in a divided country will not help unify our country, it will only confirm 75 million Americans’ biggest fears about the new administration.” (Trump got 74.2 million votes.) Or Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming: “A mere 24 hours ago, President Biden stood before America promising to unify our nation. Yet on day one, he took divisive actions to devastate Wyoming’s economy.” Or Rep. Victoria Spartz, R-Indiana, who tweeted that Biden “is going with a partisan approach on key issues like energy policy, immigration, and border security. … Doesn’t seem very unifying.” There are variations on the theme, like Sen. Lindsey Graham whining that Biden was following the “Obama playbook”: “Blame your predecessor, claim everything is in shambles.” (As if Obama and Biden took office amid rainbows and sunshine.) Or conspiracy theorist Sen. Rand Paul — who might be telling on himself — complaining that Biden’s denunciations of white supremacy and disinformation were attacks on conservatives like him. Anything Biden does will be divisive because, for Republicans, unity exists on their terms. Never mind that Republicans lost — the House, the Senate, the presidency, all of it. Ignore, too, that we’re talking about unity only because Republican gaslighting incited an insurrection. But while any conversation about unity should begin with Republicans groveling, the onus will inevitably fall

on Democrats. Republicans know the national media will equate unity with bipartisanship, which gives them leverage. If they withhold support, legislation becomes “partisan” — i.e., “divisive” — and the press will frame obstruction as Biden’s failure to compromise. It worked during the Obama years; there’s no reason to think it won’t this time, too. Here’s the thing to bear in mind: Congressional Republicans have only as much power as Democrats give them. Republicans’ only mechanism to stop legislation is the Senate filibuster. But Senate Democrats could nuke the filibuster with a simple majority vote. Mitch McConnell knows that. He knows, too, that while the Beltway media is drawn to facile promises of bipartisanship like moths to flames, there’s a growing contingent of progressives who will no longer play the game. That’s why he’s filibustering the Senate’s organizing resolution to try to lock in the filibuster. The curious thing is that Democrats lack the votes to go nuclear. A handful of Dems are unequivocal nays, and the only thing that might change their minds is if Republicans proved to be unflinching obstructionists. That McConnell wants to remove Democrats’ leverage now makes you wonder how strong his newfound commitment to Senate norms really is. It’s no exaggeration to say the success of the Biden administration — and the future of American democracy — rides on Chuck Schumer telling McConnell to pound sand. It’s not just that Republicans will prevent the administration from delivering policies the country voted for. It’s that the right-wing populism that propelled Trump to power thrives on dysfunctional government, and the filibuster makes the legislative branch dysfunctional. Remember that Republican power derives from undemocratic anachronisms (e.g., the Electoral College and the Senate) and racist policies (e.g., gerrymandering) that elevate white, rural voters at the expense of diverse, urban populations. To wit: Biden defeated Trump by more than 7 million votes and 4.4 percentage points, yet Trump came within about 40,000 votes, spread across three states, of winning the Electoral College. Another data point: In the 50-50 Senate, Dems represent some 42 million more people than Republicans. In other words, this is a center-left country that gives the far right a head start, and the filibuster is yet another means by which the seditionists who tried to disenfranchise millions of voters on Jan. 6 can continue subverting the will of the people through Biden’s presidency. To eliminate this Senate institution, they’ll scold through crocodile tears, would be too “divisive” for a nation that needs “healing.” What the nation needs isn’t handwringing over Senate procedures. What it needs — and what voters will care about in 2022 — are results, and you won’t get those if McConnell has a veto. If Republicans want unity, they should act like it. If not, get them out of the way. After Trump’s incompetent, revanchist authoritarianism, we need some goddamn grown-ups in charge. Sorry if the truth isn’t unifying. feedback@orlandoweekly.com

MADE IN THE SHADE Hours before last Wednesday’s presidential inauguration, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz sent social media aflutter by trolling toward the 2022 election cycle. Responding to a Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel report that his name was being tossed around as a potential Republican primary challenger to U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, Gaetz tweeted that the only statewide Florida office he’d consider seeking would be agriculture commissioner. “I have no interest in running against Marco Rubio for the US Senate,” Gaetz, a Fort Walton Beach Republican, tweeted. “In 2022 the only statewide position I would consider running for in the current political climate is Commissioner of Agriculture. But things can change! (Not the Senate thing though).” Gaetz, the scion of a wealthy political family who has been in Congress since 2017, is close to former President Donald Trump and represents a large area of the Panhandle that includes coastal communities, inland farmers and military bases. Nikki Fried, the only statewide elected Democrat, serves as agriculture commissioner. While she can run for re-election in 2022, Fried has said she’s “looking into” a run against Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. Along with governor, agriculture commissioner and U.S. senator, the other statewide offices up in 2022 are attorney general and chief financial officer. Gaetz has a law degree. But DeSantis, Rubio, Attorney General Ashley Moody and state Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis are all Republicans and have been loyal to Trump, with DeSantis coming close to Gaetz in public displays of admiration. If Gaetz decides to run for agriculture commissioner, it could lead to a primary race against state Senate President Wilton Simpson, a Trilby egg farmer who is drawing speculation about a possible statewide bid. Gaetz has previously questioned Simpson, particularly over the implementation of an E-Verify program to check if workers are in the country legally. When Simpson’s name was brought up online, Gaetz responded with some Twitter shade: “Paging who? (Asking for 98% of Floridians).” Gaetz later tweeted, “Florida deserves a Commissioner of Agriculture who doesn’t support illegal immigration. Regardless of political party” and “Florida deserves a Commissioner of Agriculture who will print on every weapons license: ‘The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights authorizes every American to openly bear arms.’ Regardless of party.’” Among the duties of Fried’s department is issuing concealed-weapons licenses.

With Georgia swinging the U.S. Senate to Democratic control, Gov. Ron DeSantis expressed disappointment but acknowledged the change could mean more federal aid for Florida. “I told my wife, when the results came in, I was like, you know, what this is going to mean now is as a governor, they’re going to try to send the states a lot of money, because they want to send this money to New York and California, or whatever,” DeSantis said while giving a keynote address last week at the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Policy Orientation in Austin. “They’re probably going to do something that if I was in Congress, I would have voted against,” DeSantis continued. “But if they’re going to send me money, we’re happy to take it and we’ll put it to good use. Probably beef up our budget reserves.” DeSantis called the Georgia election results “disappointing,” “Now we’re facing a situation where you’re going to see potentially them have more ability to do some of the really aggressive things that we didn’t think was possible the morning after the election,” DeSantis said. “Because I think we all just assumed, you know, that we were going to hold the Senate.” President Joe Biden has proposed a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package that includes money to step up vaccinations and testing, money to assist businesses, additional stimulus checks for Americans and an increase in weekly unemployment assistance. 14

Many Republicans repeatedly balked last year at additional pandemic aid for states, arguing that Congress shouldn’t bail out liberal politicians unable to budget within their means. “It’s one thing to say COVID has hurt the economy, you have revenue (problems). OK, we want to help you. But it’s quite another thing to say, we’re going to use COVID as a pretext to be able to bail out pensions or to be able to do things that really were a result of mismanagement, not a result of COVID,” DeSantis said in May.
INSIDE JOB
Despite what some Senate Democrats would like, lawmakers will not head outside for committee meetings as the weather gets warmer. “We have all that (Capitol) plaza, all the room of the portico, the new stuff. We could have lobbyists meetings; we could have public meetings out there,” Sen. Loranne Ausley, D-Tallahassee, said during a Democratic caucus Zoom call on Monday. “I think we should be, you know, strongly advocating for that. I would feel much more comfortable meeting outside.” Due to COVID-19 restrictions, members of the public and lobbyists who want to speak during Senate committee meetings can do so remotely, from rooms reserved at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center a few blocks from the Capitol. Committees are meeting in large rooms, allowing more room for senators and staff members to spread out. Unlike the House, the Senate is prohibiting individual in-person meetings, even by appointment, in Senate offices. Senate Minority Leader Gary Farmer, D-Lighthouse Point, noted there has been some confusion as a few lobbyists last week made their way into the Senate office building, despite signs explaining the rule of no indoor in-person meetings. Katie Betta, spokeswoman for Senate President Wilton Simpson, said last Wednesday that Senate committee meetings will remain indoors. “The President is certainly comfortable with and encourages senators to hold individual meetings outdoors at their discretion, but the Senate has no plans to move committee meetings outdoors at this time,” Betta said in an email. “As you can imagine, outdoor committee meetings pose a number of serious logistical concerns, the most important of which is security.” — by Jim Turner, News Service of Florida ‘NOW WHAT?’

Only two weeks ago, I was shar-
ing optimistic news about upcoming additions to Orlando’s attractions. Well, the theme park gods giveth, and the theme park gods taketh away. Here’s the latest scoop on some recently announced alterations, interruptions and outright extinctions at the Walt Disney World Resort. An iconic opening-day Magic Kingdom attraction shut down last week without any official advance notice, but unlike most Disney park closures, this one elicited more applause than anger. Jan. 19, the final full day of the Trump administration, also turned out to be guests’ last chance to see the current version of the Hall of Presidents. I attended one of the final performances, and am happy to report that the security guards and spiked railing added four years ago for the Trumptronic’s safety weren’t required, as the audience remained respectful, although I’ll admit watching the red curtain come down on Donald’s doughy doppelgänger for the final time was strangely satisfying. Even as late as that afternoon, Disney cast members in Liberty Square couldn’t say what would become of the attraction, but it came as little shock when Inauguration Day dawned to find a “closed for refurbishment” sign on the Hall’s entrance. Some — including the Orlando Sentinel’s editorial board — have called for it to be permanently retired, but Disney has announced that the show will eventually reopen with an audio-animatronic figure of the new President, although it has not set a reopening date, nor confirmed whether the Biden-bot will have a featured speaking role in the finale like all its predecessors since Bill Clinton. In light of October’s 50th anniversary, it might be wise to sidestep polarized contemporary politics and restore a tribute to
the 1971 version of the attraction, with the chief executives silently nodding along to a roll call. At the other end of the spectrum, internet rumors claim the Muppets – who previously performed outside the Hall of Presidents – will move inside the theater, with Weird Al Yankovic and Lin-Manuel Miranda floated as collaborators. As wild as that idea might seem, even a park purist like myself would prefer that to the divisive downer that Walt’s pet project devolved into. Any complaints about the Hall of Presidents’ closure were easily drowned out by the hue and cry over Walt Disney World’s announcement earlier this month that the complimentary Magical Express bus service between Orlando International Airport and their on-site hotels would cease operations at the end of 2021. That means there will be a gap of at least a year between the end of the Magical Express and the debut of the Brightline train line to Disney Springs, leaving visitors to secure alternate transportation. Originally intended to trap vacationers without rental cars on Mickey’s property, the “free” service was always factored into the resort’s expensive nightly room rates (which are not expected to decrease with the bus elimination). But Disney has apparently decided that, with increasing numbers of guests using ride-hailing apps to escape to Universal and SeaWorld, it’s no longer worth their while to subsidize the Mears-operated service. Although most locals likely never used the Magical Express service, tourists have come to rely on it over the past 15 years; its absence will be especially felt by families requiring a vehicle with multiple car seats, which are nearly impossible to come by otherwise. Also almost overlooked amid the Magical Express mourning was news that
Extra Magic Hours, which allowed prepandemic resort guests into select parks one or more hours before or after normal operating hours, were being permanently eliminated. In their stead, Disney is instituting 30 minutes of Early Theme Park Entry at all four parks every morning, with no evening hours. This new scheme somehow manages to make things worse for both those paying to stay on-site — whose time to enjoy shorter waits has been chopped in half — and off-site visitors (including locals), who will now never be able to rope-drop a park without finding the headliners’ queues already filled with hotel guests. Last but not least, a recent announcement sounds like a ray of sunlight for long-furloughed entertainers, but could signal a slow recovery for Disney’s stages. Festival of the Lion King, Animal Kingdom’s most popular live show, will be the first large-cast Actors’ Equity show to reopen, but there are a couple of catches. Simba and company won’t return until sometime this summer, and when they do it will be in a “Celebration of” the usual show, featuring modified choreography and backstage adjustments to provide physical distancing for the cast, crew and audience. What isn’t currently clear is how many of the 700-plus union performers who are still laid off will be brought back, and when any other shows might be revived. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is already home to two of the resort’s reopened Equity venues (Savi’s lightsaber workshop and the Frozen sing-along), so restarting open-air amphitheater productions like Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular and Beauty and the Beast seems like a no-brainer. Chicken Fire One of the hottest (literally and figuratively) food-truck operations in this city finally got a permanent space from which to fire off some of the best hot chicken this side of Nashville. Tenders and sliders (available in “soulful,” “meek,” “mild,” “medium” and “hot” levels) are served simply in boxes along with bread, pickles, crinkle-cut fries and coleslaw. (Open, 2425 E. Colonial Drive, facebook.com/ eatchickenfire) Dochi Folks went gaga over Dochi’s mochi donuts manufactured on the second floor of East End Market, and they’ll soon lose their minds when they open a brick-and-mortar shop in Mills 50. The signature crispy-chewy donuts are made from Japanese rice flour (to create the sublime texture) and come in flavors ranging from ube glaze to Ferrero-Rocher to matcha Oreo. put 2020 where it belongs — in a slop-filled dumpster strewn with red baseball caps coated in fryer grease and set ablaze by a flamethrower-brandishing Anthony Fauci. That destructive image helps nurture a sentiment of hope and optimism within me, particularly when looking ahead to what the next 12 months will bring to our battered restaurant industry. The good news? Many eating establishments aren’t just showing signs of life, they’re beginning to thrive and expand. Restaurants and food halls that were slated to open last year, but didn’t, will open this year, and an exciting batch of boutique boîtes fronted by equally exciting young culinarians will bring chef’s tasting experiences to the masses. Hope, indeed, sits on the horizon, and if this list of newly open and soon-to-open restaurants is any indication, 2021 will be a year that’ll live in normality. — Faiyaz Kara A.G.’s Market The Hamlin food hall (appropriately monogrammed after Arthur George Hamlin) will sit on 22,000 square feet of lakefront property and offer everything from craft burgers and pizza to Southern fried chicken and sushi. A second-floor indoor/outdoor bar will provide views of Lake Hancock and nightly fireworks at Disney. The larger kitchen will allow the pair to grow

catering operations and expand offerings — think brunch. Expect everything from pani puri and kathi rolls to momos and potato chaat. (Opening February, 6215 S. Orange Blossom Trail, bombaycafeorlando.net) The Bridge A “New York-style” restaurant will move into the slick space previously occupied by upscale vegan resto Proper & Wild. The menu will be “contemporary American,” though a couple of vegan dishes might find their way onto the menu. (Opening March, 155 E. Morse Blvd., Winter Park, thebridgerestaurant.com) Bumby Arcade Food Hall An 18-stall food hall incorporating the gorgeous space of the Orchid Garden on Church Street will undoubtedly draw more people to the venue than in the old Church Street Station days. Vendors, like Susuru Yatai, promise to be as worthy as the Victorian-ish architecture. (Opening fall, 116 W. Church St., no website) Chicago Dog & Co. If you’d rather slap yourself in the head with a deep-dish pizza than make the trip down to Portillo’s for a Chicagostyle dog, this little family-run joint in Altamonte will give you a true taste of Second City wiener authenticity. And, yes, they’ll have Italian beef sandwiches, tamales and smashburgers on the menu as well. Don’t ask for ketchup. (Opening March, 1113 W. State Road 434, Altamonte Springs, chicagodogandco.com)
F&D Cantina This Mexican concept from the F&D family of restaurant brands already has a location in Lake Mary, but they’ll soon expand to the Thornton Park/Lake Eola neighborhood, taking over the space recently vacated by Jax Thornton Park, and Baoery before that. Central Blvd., fdcantinalakemary.com) First Watch Winter Park The city’s best-known breakfast chain is moving out of an aging space in Maitland and into a much more modern one in Winter Park, complete with an outdoor dining area and lounge. The move is very much in keeping with First Watch’s recent concept tweaks, from the “urban farm” aesthetic to the adult beverage menu to a focus on farmfresh ingredients. (Opening March, 140 N. Orlando Ave., Winter Park, firstwatch.com) Foreigner Chef Bruno Fonseca will lend permanence to the “Foreigner Experience” — his high-end chef’s tasting pop-up concept — in Audubon Park this spring. The cozy 954-square-foot space will feature a 10-seat counter and kitchen from where Fonseca will fashion seven-course prix-fixe menus drawing from global influences. A focus will be placed on local and luxe ingredients like Florida beef and seafood, including oysters. (Opening spring, 3124 Corrine Drive, theforeignerexperience.com) The Food Factory This food hall-ish venue being built as part of the Oviedo on the Park development will see eight “micro restaurants” run by local chefs, restaurateurs and food truck owners surrounding the Factory Bar — a rooftop bar and restaurant. Tenants include Kai Asian Street Fare, Dharma Fine Vittles, Oak Flame Pizza, Ruthie’s New Diner, Burritohead, Sea Legs, Lix Luscious Desserts and Grainiac. Fort Pitt A nearly 100-year-old edifice on Old Cheney Highway will transform into a neighborhood marketplace and food venue anchored by Rock N’ Billies, a vegan burgers-andshakes concept by Shaun Noonan of Dharma Fine Vittles, and Valhalla Bakery, which will move out of Market on South. Noonan’s natural wine shop Curate will also occupy a space, as will Soteria Wellness. (Opening early summer, 5565 Old Cheney Highway, fortpittorlando.com) Gatlin Hall Kevin O’Donnell, co-owner of the Local Butcher and Market, the Porch, Big Fin Seafood Kitchen and Russell’s on Lake Ivanhoe, is behind this SoDo food hall venture that will see Frenchy’s Wood-Fired Pizza, Da Kine Poke and Willy’s Original, a quick-service burger and chicken concept by former Capital Grille executive corporate chef Jim Nuetzi. A rotating dessert operator will also occupy a stall, while Gatlin Hall Brewing, with Cigar City’s Tyler Rosenberg as head brewer, will anchor the 4,000-square-foot space. (Opening March, 4721 S. Orange Ave., gatlinhallbrewing.com) Great Greek The Mediterranean fast-casual concept offering everything from gyros to spanakopita to souvlaki will open its second area restaurant, this one on the ground floor of the SkyHouse building downtown. The second floor will be reserved for overflow seating, private dining, stage performances and events. Two cocktail bars will also reside on the upper floor. Colonial Drive, jollibeeusa.com) Kaya Kadence chef Lordfer Lalicon and the restaurant’s business manager, Jamilyn Salonga Bailey, a couple of passionate Pinoys who want to create a greater awareness of the “beautiful and soulful” cuisine of the Philippines, will open this hotly anticipated restaurant in the former Dandelion Community Café space. Thornton Ave., kadenceorlando.com) Kyoto Sushi & Grill While many mourned the closure of Spoleto Italian Kitchen, others rejoiced at the news that this local hibachi and sushi chain would move into the space. Billing itself as “faster and more affordable” than other
The Hampton Social The island-inspired flair of the old Tommy Bahama Restaurant in Pointe Orlando will soon be supplanted by the East Coast, nautical swankdashery of the Hampton Social. Expect plenty of seafood, shellfish, brick-oven pizzas, and — not to sound like a broken Michael McDonald record — plenty of yacht rock, I’m sure. (Opening February, Pointe Orlando, 9101 International Drive, thehamptonsocial.com) Hangry Bison Winter Garden The burger joint that opened inside Winter Park Village back in 2018 is expanding to Winter Garden but, then again, who isn’t? The Exchange on historic Plant Street is the beneficiary and, burgers aside, craft cocktails, bourbon and whiskey flights will also be served out of the 4,100-square-foot space. (Opening May, 270 W. Plant St., Winter Garden, thehangrybison.com) HÄOS on Church Blue Star, the godmother of the local burlesque scene, opened this two-story restaurant/performance venue in the old Lion’s Pride space a little more than a year after she shuttered the Venue in Ivanhoe Village. And don’t let the fact that the restaurant will be situated on the ground floor of the My Neighborhood Storage Center dissuade you from going. (Opening February, 108 E. Colonial Drive, makihibachi.net) The Monroe Josh Oakley, the talented chef who wowed at the Smiling Bison in Orlando and Sanford before doing the same at 1921 Mount Dora, will serve as executive chef of Jason and Sue Chin’s restaurant on the ground floor of the Julian Apartments in Creative Village. Expect dishes of modern comfort at a price point lower than, say, the Ravenous Pig. (Opening March, 480 N. Terry Ave., themonroeorlando.com) Norman’s The “New World cuisine” at the new Norman’s in Dr. Phillips won’t be made by longtime chef Andres Mendoza — he departed for Victoria & Albert’s — but by Mendoza’s right-hand man, Carlos Robles. Chef Norman Van Aken has always been impressed with Robles’ cooking, but he’s equally impressed by his ability to build a team and execute a plan. (Opening October, 7924 Via Dellagio Way, normans.com) Ootoya Sushi It’s been more than a year since beloved Japanese joint Shari Sushi shuttered, but sushi is about to wiggle its way
back to the Eola dining scene courtesy of Ootoya Sushi. The restaurant has been a favorite in Altamonte Springs thanks to its creative rolls, hibachi and sake offerings. (Opening January, 621 E. Central Blvd., ootoyasushi.net) Outpost Neighborhood Kitchen Running a cutesy eatery in a relatively small space in College Park is one thing. Being the anchor restaurant at the Maitland City Centre is entirely another. One thing’s certain: The success of the restaurant’s brand of American comfort fare will rest entirely in the hands of former Ravenous Pig chef de cuisine Nick Sierputowski. (Opening February, 190 Independence Lane, Maitland, facebook.com/ outpostneighborhoodkitchen) Pattie Lou’s Donuts Don’t expect the doughnut trend to die anytime soon. At this downtown dunker shop, customers will be able to customize the doughy confections by picking, dipping and topping the doughnut of their choice. (Opening March, 139 E. Pine St., pattielousdonuts.com) Perla’s Pizza Popular Ivanhoe Village bar the Thirsty Topher will soon serve craft pizzas along with its sweet selection of craft brews. Mike Collantes (of Taglish and the soon-toopen Soseki) will bake “not your normal pies,” so expect topping combinations such as banana, pepperoni and Calabrese pepper, or pineapple jam, pickled jalapeños and smoked slab bacon. (Opening February, 601 Virginia Drive, perlaspizza.com) The Pinery Playing up Ivanhoe Village’s history as a once-thriving pineapple farm, the 150-seat Pinery will occupy more than
4,000 square feet inside the Lake House Apartments and celebrate “Florida fresh cuisine” in addition to Orlando history. The Deco mezzanine railing from the Sun First National Bank downtown (now a Walgreens) and pecky cypress salvaged from a home in Lake Fairview will be incorporated into the restaurant’s design. (Opening May, 295 NE Ivanhoe Blvd., thepineryorlando.com) Portillo’s If there’s one thing this hot dog chain has mustered, it’s daaa buzz. In addition to Chicago-style dogs and Italian beef sammidges, they’ll offer burgers, salads and their signature chocolate cake. The 7,800-square-foot location will feature double drive-through lanes and two covered outdoor patios. (Opening March, 7715 Palm Parkway, portillos.com) Soseki Taglish chef Mike Collantes joins forces with sushi chef Denni Cha to open this highly anticipated 10-seat restaurant offering guests a modern take on the omakase/ multi-course dining experience. The duo plan on expanding the menu’s scope beyond just Japanese fare. (Opening spring, 955 W. Fairbanks Ave., Winter Park, sosekifl.com) Southern Box Food Hall The old Great Southern Box Company building on the southeast corner of Princeton Street and North Orange Blossom Trail is being preserved and repurposed into a 22,400-square-foot food hall featuring an elevated plaza with outdoor green space (read: shade). The food hall is but one component of a larger plan to redevelop the corner site in the Packing District, which will also see a microbrewery and a signature restaurant/bar. (Opening
November, Princeton Street and North Orange Blossom Trail, packingdistrictorlando.com) South Orange Provisions In addition to the Bumby Arcade, downtown Orlando will get this upscale food hall on the ground floor of the old SunTrust building. The 10,000-square-foot space will house nine food stalls and feature a shaded park with outdoor seating. (Opening fall, 200 S. Orange Ave., southorangeprovisions.com) Space 220 Part of the Mission: Space expansion, this ambitiously themed restaurant promises to be, well, far out. The dining room places guests inside a space station with panoramic views 220 miles above our little blue planet, while the menu is a little more down to earth: modern American cuisine with a 1,000-bottle wine list. (Opening spring, Future World, Epcot, disneyworld.disney.go.com) Susuru Yatai From Lewis Lin, the man behind retro Japanese izakaya Susuru, comes this retro Japanese yatai, or snack stall, slated to occupy a space inside the new Bumby Arcade food hall downtown. The menu will offer up a host of Japanese street fare — yakiniku (grilled meats), yakitori (grilled chicken), ramen and Japanese street snacks like takoyaki, gyoza and wagyu donburi. (Opening fall, 116 W. Church St., susuruorl.com) Taglish UCF Mike Collantes will certainly be one of the city’s busiest restaurateurs in 2021. In addition to Soseki and Perla’s Pizza, he’ll open a second location of his popular FilipinoAmerican eatery. And unlike the Lotte Market original, the UCF location of Taglish will have its own space in the University Commons plaza, allowing patrons more elbow room to enjoy his sisig, longanisa burger and escabeche. (Opening spring, 12226 Corporate Blvd., taglishfl.com) Wa Sushi Many lamented the closure of this out-of-the-way gem in Casselberry, but owner Hong Wong renovated a space in a more conspicuous Casselberry locale and will soon be slicing and dicing more superlative cuts of local and Japanese seafood. (Opening February, 924 State Road 436, Casselberry, facebook.com/wasushicasselberry) White Castle The stoner burger chain returns to the Sunshine State after more than 50 years, but Orlandoans will have to make the drive to the O-Town West development near Disney to satisfy their munchies. The tonkotsu comprises a 20-hour pork bone and trotter broth, while shio and shoyu ramens are fashioned with five-hour clear chicken broth. The spicy miso is, arguably, the most popular with a pork-chicken broth blend, chashu, minced pork, sprouts, corn, scallions and bok choy. Don’t tell Sammy he made the pants too long, I guess, or you’ll end up comparing inseams with Luca Brasi. In Turkish, yet! (Netflix)
Below Zero – It’s Con Air meets Frigidaire as the transfer of a bunch of prisoners through frozen terrain is complicated by a violent attack. This Netflix nail-biter was Spanish-made — but when it comes to ID’ing the assailants, I’m not entirely prepared to rule out the Turks. (Netflix)
Penguin Bloom – An embattled family’s true-life memoir was the source for this wannabe-uplifting feature, in which Naomi Watts plays an Australian woman who becomes paralyzed while on vacation in Thighland. Wait, I mean Thailand — we don’t have to do jokes like that anymore! Anyway, she gets all depressed and stuff, until the family adopts a baby magpie whose physical challenges she can relate to. Prepare to have your heart good and warmed — although you may want to skip the part where Watts’ character shows off what she’s learned from her new pal by vomiting Honey Bunches of Oats directly into her kids’ mouths. PREMIERES THURSDAY: The Queen of Black Magic – The Indonesian horror renaissance continues with a very loose remake of the 1981 shocker of the same name. That one concerned a woman who was accused of witchcraft and sought revenge in the supernatural; the remake shifts the action to an orphanage, whose young male residents have some secrets of their own. Sounds like a cross between The Orphanage and The Devil’s Backbone — which has gotta be the best pairing anybody’s thought of since McDonald’s started putting Xanax in the McRib. (Shudder)
The Dig – More true-life tales, with Ralph Fiennes and Carey Mulligan as Britishers of the 1930s who discover a medieval burial ground. Netflix viewer guide: “This movie is understated, emotional …”; The AV Club: “… a lot like sitting at a bus stop.” (Netflix) Finding ‘Ohana – A couple of Brooklyn kids explore their Hawaiian roots while hunting for buried treasure on Oahu. Yeah, but will a crazy-ass Vincent Price be there to teach them about tabu? (Netflix) The Little Things – Put Denzel Washington in the same box with Christopher Nolan as dudes who are pissed off their studio isn’t doing enough to kill off their audience. Seems Denzel is plenty miffed his portrayal of a deputy sheriff on the trail of a serial killer is going to streaming at the same time it debuts in theaters. Listen, Denz, some of us happen to like the idea of being able to watch a movie without the local chapter of QAnon coughing on us. Appearing opposite Washington is Rami Malek, who’s cool with whatever the suits want to do as long as they don’t make him work with Bryan Singer. This week, Orlando fusion band Leisure Chief will release their first new fulllength album in five years. Titled Cosmic Comics, the record is an eight-song ride that’s a smooth, easy brew of funk, R&B and jazz that even features a cameo by local legend Anthony Cole. Beginning Friday, Jan. 29, the album will be available through the major platforms. And the Chief will perform in Winter Park at the New Standard on Feb. 5. On Monday, Feb. 1, Orlando roots-rock band Sugar City will release an especially timely EP titled When We Get Outta Here. Last year, the pandemic stranded bandleader Kevin Meehan on the Eastern Caribbean island of St. Kitts, which had closed its borders in response. While confined, he decided to ride the psycho-emotional rollercoaster through song, writing and recording 14 of them with the limited musical gear available. This EP is the first five-song batch (plus two remixes) from that flurry. It’s unapologetically topical — especially in singles “Wear a F’n Mask” and “Lose Control” — but in ways more human than political. The actual music, though, sways with the island breezes in which it was conceived and plays like a tropical getaway, something we could all use right now. The EP will be available through the band’s website (sugarcitymusic.com) as a donation-based download or stream.
Orlando fusion stars Leisure Chief release their first new album in five years, a brew of funk, R&B and jazz Ana Popovic: In terms of female representation, the blues makes rock music look like an egalitarian promised land, especially when it comes to leading roles. But this Serbian dynamo packs the goods to tilt the scales back toward the ladies. With blazing guitar virtuosity and a long list of international honors, she runs with the big dogs of modern blues. Her last studio album, 2018’s Like It On Top, was produced and features appearances by blues legend Keb’ Mo’, who’ll himself come to town to perform on Feb. 11 at the Dr. Phillips Center’s Frontyard Festival. But as the title of her 2020 release Live for Live suggests, the stage is what she lives for, so expect a prime display of guitar heroics that will drop jaws and blow up the boys club. My girlfriend of six months got drunk one week into a work-related physical separation, ghosted on me, went to a hotel and had sex for two days straight with another man. She then called and confessed everything. She’s remorseful and says it was alcohol-related and that she doesn’t remember the details. My take is that if she was too drunk to remember the details, she was too drunk to consent, which equals rape, right? I encouraged her to file a police report and get this rapist off the streets. She says she doesn’t know his name or number and doesn’t want to pursue legal action. She does remember the sex was unprotected and took Plan B today and is getting a full STI screening. She’s exhibiting signs of trauma — I’ve been down this road with an ex — and I’m trying to be supportive, but I don’t think I can continue. Would I be the biggest asshole in the world to end this? I’m 50 years old, she’s 28 years old. What the fuck do I do? She’s fragile and I have been supporting her financially for the last six months, which is weird since her job pays twice what mine does. Just Seeking Guidance It’s entirely possible your girlfriend was blackout drunk that whole weekend and incapable of offering meaningful consent, and the person she was with knew she was too fucked up to consent to sex — and wasn’t too fucked up to consent to sex himself — and she was raped. It’s also possible your girlfriend was drunk but not so drunk she couldn’t consent, JSG, and is overstating how drunk she was because she doesn’t want to share the details with you — details you aren’t entitled to. It’s also possible she was raped and is reluctant to go to the police because she knows telling her story — which could be entirely true — won’t result in an arrest, much less a prosecution, and so going to the police wouldn’t get this rapist — if the guy is a rapist — off the streets, but could cause her further trauma.

Zooming out for a second … you assume a man forced your girlfriend to do something she didn’t want to do (fuck him all weekend) and your response is to force your girlfriend to do something she doesn’t want to do (file a police report). You need to stop that. If you think she’s showing signs of trauma, you should urge her to seek help from a rape counselor or trauma specialist, i.e. someone in a better position to assess the situation than you are, JSG, someone who doesn’t have cause to feel conflicted or resentful or angry about what did or did not happen that weekend. If you want to end the relationship, you should, JSG, and you can break up with someone without being an asshole or abandoning them. Offer her your support — offer your emotional support, withdraw your financial support — and give her the names of some local rape crisis centers in your area. I’m a 59-year-old gay man with a problem I’ve struggled with for all of my active sex life. I rarely orgasm during sex.
