Actor-comedian Bob Saget found dead in Orlando hotel room Bob Saget, one of America’s most memorable sitcom dads, was found dead in a hotel room Sunday, according to authorities. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Saget was found at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, and said neither drugs nor foul play were suspected as a cause of death. “Earlier today, deputies were called to the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes for a call about an unresponsive man in a hotel room,” tweeted OCSO. “The man was identified as Robert Saget & pronounced deceased on scene. Detectives found no signs of foul play or drug use in this case.” The 65-year-old Full House actor and host of America’s Funniest Home Videos had just performed Friday night at Hard Rock Live at Universal’s CityWalk, and had been on tour in Florida.

Florida saw 400,000 new cases of coronavirus last week Florida totaled nearly 400,000 new COVID-19 cases during the week that ended Thursday, Jan. 6, as the highly contagious Omicron variant of the coronavirus raced through the state, according to a Department of Health report issued Friday. The 397,114 cases during the week continued a dramatic increase that began in mid-December. In all, Florida has totaled 823,153 new cases during the past three weeks, the report showed. During the three preceding weeks, Florida totaled 53,840 new cases. As of Thursday, the state had a reported total of 4.56 million cases and 62,688 COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic started in early 2020.

City of Orlando opens free COVID-19 testing site at Camping World Stadium Camping World Stadium, which recently hosted the Vrbo Citrus Bowl, has pivoted to a more urgent use as a city-administered COVID-19 testing site. Demand for COVID-19 testing is overwhelming in Orange County as the Omicron variant spreads quickly through Central Florida, with reportedly a third of all Orange County residents testing positive for COVID-19 in recent days. The county currently has three testing sites open — Barnett Park, Econ Soccer Complex and the South Orange Youth Sports Complex — but demand is far outpacing the capacity at these facilities. The Camping World testing site will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week, and testing is free. No appointments are necessary, and testing will be first come, first served. City staff advise visiting CDR HealthPro online first to enter some required information and cut down on wait time. This testing site will offer rapid and PCR testing.

OCPS teachers, bus drivers call out sick in massive numbers on first day back OCPS faculty and staff called out sick in large numbers on the first day of school after winter break, according to OCPS Superintendent Barbara Jenkins. Jenkins, who spoke during Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings’ scheduled coronavirus briefing, noted that 700 teachers and nearly 100 bus drivers were out on the first day back. That amounted to around 5 percent of the district’s teachers and nearly 14 percent of the drivers employed by the district, Jenkins said. The wave of absenteeism coincided with an alarming spike in coronavirus cases among students and faculty in the district. To combat the surge, Jenkins instituted a mask mandate among OCPS employees. State law prohibits the district from mandating that students wear masks.

UF report claims 8 in 10 Floridians will have contracted COVID-19 by the end of January A new report from researchers at the University of Florida claims that up to 80 percent of Floridians will contract COVID-19 by the end of the Omicron-fueled outbreak. The biostatisticians base their findings on the fact that Omicron is much more contagious than any other variant we’ve seen. They report that Omicron is twice as infectious as the Delta variant, which fueled a deadly outbreak at the end of last summer. “Probably 70 to 80 percent of the state will either get infected in this wave or have been infected in a prior wave,” UF professor Ira Longini said while discussing the report’s findings. While Omicron has appeared to be less deadly than earlier variants, people who catch it are infectious much earlier than any other previous variant. Because of this quick incubation period, UF researchers moved up their timetable for when the peak of the Omicron surge will hit. They had previously predicted a peak in February, basing their findings on the behavior of earlier outbreaks. “It’s good news in the sense that the wave will be over certainly by the end of January,” said Longini. “The bad news it’s going to be very intense for the next couple weeks with lots of cases, and it probably will put a strain on our hospital resources.” This astounding rate of infection has already happened in some Central Florida communities. A test of Altamonte Springs wastewater found that 70 percent of residents on the Altamonte Sewer Service area have COVID-19. UF representatives are still urging vaccination as the best way to deal with this and future variants. “We may get more variants in the future,” Longini said. “So I think the more people we can vaccinate and keep vaccinating, especially our children who need to be vaccinated, especially the younger children, to keep doing that. Not letting up is going to be very important going forward.” — Alex Galbraith

Some are more culpable than others: the propaganda machine that turned basic safety precautions into a totalitarian socialist plot; the cynical politicians — hello, Ron DeSantis — who tried to score “freedom” points by allowing thousands to die. But the culpability extends to those who’ve decided that treating the pandemic like an ongoing emergency is no longer a viable option. Life will go on. Schoolteachers and overwhelmed health care workers will just have to suck it up. That’s not to say these policy questions have easy answers. In-class education is clearly better for most students than remote learning; it’s also better for a lot of parents, especially those who don’t have the luxury of working from home or whose kids rely on the free meals schools provide. Months of additional business restrictions would also be economically cataclysmic unless the federal government (read: Joe Manchin) approved trillions more dollars in aid, and most governors would be unlikely to go along in any event. And that’s to say nothing of the psychological weariness enveloping us. So we’ve backed ourselves into a corner. BEST GUESS: TESTS SUPPRESSED DeSantis admits up to 1 million COVID test kits were allowed to expire; Fried blasts governor for unused stockpile BY L AURA CASSELS

Ron DeSantis and Kevin Guthrie, director of Florida’s Division of Emergency Management, acknowledged last Thursday that 800,000 to a million COVID tests had expired in a state stockpile, with the Omicron variant spreading and residents facing long lines for testing. The acknowledgement came during a press conference Thursday, when reporters were asking the governor questions following an announcement related to getting COVID-19 test kits to senior citizens in group living. The expired testing kits had become an issue earlier, when Florida Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Nikki Fried said in a Dec. 30 statement: “It’s come to my attention that Gov. DeSantis’ Department of Health has a significant number of COVID-19 tests stockpiled that are set to expire imminently. “Given the Governor’s lack of transparency throughout this pandemic, there’s no known public information about these tests or how soon they expire. With Omicron infections exploding throughout Florida, I beg of him to release these

tests immediately to local counties and cities, and to stand up state-sponsored testing sites. To let these tests expire while Floridians anxiously wait for hours in testing lines is negligent at best, and heartless at worst.” On Thursday, Guthrie explained what happened: “We had between 800,000 and a million test kits, Abbott rapid test kits, in our warehouse that did expire,” Guthrie said in answer to reporter questions at the press conference in West Palm Beach. Guthrie said demand for the tests was low in the fall, prior to the emergency of the Omicron variant. “We tried to give them out prior to that but there wasn’t a demand for it,” Guthrie said. He said the state secured an extension on the expiration dates, from September to December, which expired, and have requested another one, which is pending. On Thursday, Fried, a Democrat who is a 2022 gubernatorial candidate, blasted the governor about the expirations. “It’s bad enough that Gov. DeSantis has deprioritized testing, with Omicron

exploding across Florida, but it’s an absolute disgrace for the Governor and his communications team to have lied and covered up the massive failure of a million unused tests while Floridians wait in hours-long lines for local tests that are running out,” Fried said in a press statement. “Now the Governor has to beg President Biden for another waiver to even use these expired tests — should they still be safe and effective. The Governor’s executive failure during this pandemic continues to hurt Floridians. This is why I speak up.” In DeSantis’ intended theme of the press conference, he announced that the Division of Emergency Management had procured a supply of at-home tests that will be prioritized for senior-living facilities. “We’ve been able to secure nearly 1 million at-home tests and make them available to nursing homes and long-term care facilities,” DeSantis said, reprising his “Seniors First” theme from early in the COVID pandemic. Guthrie said shipments of “starter kits” based on each facility’s bed count would begin today, arriving at their destinations this weekend. They are intended for use only in people exhibiting COVID symptoms. Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Simone Marstiller said Florida is home to 700 nursing homes and 3,000 assisted living facilities. Asked by a reporter whether nursing homes and assisted living facilities are experiencing outbreaks, Marstiller disclosed none. “I don’t have any specific numbers for you now,” she said. “As in the general population, we are seeing more cases.” Asked by reporters if the governor himself has been tested, DeSantis said that he had not been tested recently. He also said that he hadn’t had any COVID symptoms, so he didn’t get tested. DeSantis had received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the spring of 2021. (See story, right.) DeSantis made it clear that residents can test every day, if they choose. But Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo has requested of Floridians, “If you have no symptoms, please don’t get tested.” Ladapo has also provided new guidance in Florida on COVID testing, including: “Individuals who may have been exposed to COVID-19, but have no symptoms: COVID-19 testing is unlikely to have any clinical benefits.” This story ran originally at the Florida Phoenix. news@orlandoweekly.com

BREATHLESS: Rumors fly about DeSantis’ COVID-19 status A video making the rounds on social media is fueling speculation that Gov. Ron DeSantis has contracted COVID-19. The executive who is in competition for “doing the least to combat the virus” was seen struggling to breathe during a recent press conference. DeSantis seemed to have trouble getting words out and appeared to be tearing up with the effort. The video came after the governor disappeared for 10 days over the holidays while the state of Florida was suffering from an unprecedented coronavirus outbreak. Several folks on Twitter guessed that DeSantis either has COVID-19 or spent the time incognito because of an illness. DeSantis himself has said that he was spending time with First Lady Casey DeSantis as she was undergoing cancer treatment. DeSantis spokeswoman Christina Pushaw pushed back against the speculation when reached by Orlando Weekly. “If he had COVID I think it’s safe to assume he wouldn’t be doing press conferences, so this conspiracy theory is even more ridiculous than the usual,” she said. DeSantis did more than almost any governor to turn the state into a chicken pox party from Hell, inviting the entire state to get infected against their will. The cancellation of this year’s Fringe Winter Mini-Fest means that the MiniDigi-Fest has been bumped up from online understudy to the starring role, and will now start a week earlier than announced

“It is with great sadness that we

let you know that due to the Omicron we are canceling the 2022 in-person Winter Mini-Fest,” began last Thursday morning’s disappointing but unsurprising missive from Orlando Fringe Festival executive director Alauna Friskics. “As the Omicron variant is spreading extremely fast, we feel the most responsible action is to reduce contact with each other. And, as a festival that relies on out-of-town artists to fulfill a robust festival, it is not responsible to ask them to travel here at this point in the pandemic.” This understandable but aggravating in-person pause on the anticipated sixth annual installment of Orlando Fringe’s four-day mini-festival, which was formerly scheduled to run Jan. 13-16, is a big blow to all involved, especially out-of-town artists like writer-performer Paris Crayton III, a past Critic’s Choice winner who was supposed to be traveling here from Atlanta to premiere his latest one-man play. In an interview prior to the cancellation, Crayton told me he spent the past couple years “learning who I am outside of being an artist for the first time in my life. That’s been a journey, but I am coming to terms with who Paris is, and that has a lot to do with the show.” The show he was planning to debut was Bloodline, an autobiographical story about three generations of men, inspired by Crayton researching the origin of his own name during the pandemic. He says the play, which was directed by Orlando legend Dennis Neal, is a “sequel of sorts”

to [his acclaimed drama] Spare the Rod, but whereas “Spare the Rod dealt with pain and my childhood, this one deals with love; finding love and all things love.” Upon learning of Mini-Fest’s cancellation, Paris posted on Facebook: “Art makes you whole, although it can sometimes put a hole in your pockets. It can sometimes feel like an abusive lover that you keep running back to. But we’re tired y’all. We’re real tired. … Once again, an artist is out of a job. When will it end???” Mini-Fest’s cancellation also stung the Festival staff [full disclosure: including my spouse] who worked hard preparing the event for its relocation from Loch Haven Park to Downtown Orlando, where it would have occupied HÄOS on Church and The Depot in the nearby Floridabilt building. But, festival producer Lindsay Taylor says, “As disappointing as it is to cancel the in-person festival, I think our Winter MiniDigi is going to be a great example of the resilience our artists have in pivoting in these circumstances.” The Winter Mini-Digi-Fest that Taylor refers to is the online understudy that has been bumped up to the starring role this season, and will now start a week earlier than originally announced. From Jan. 13-23, patrons can visit orlandofringe.org/wmf6-2 to enjoy on-demand, prerecorded videos of over a dozen different shows for only $10 per production. New-to-Orlando offerings range from Manic Mirror Productions’ Parallax, a futuristic fable about fame and trans-humanism; to Neechie-Itas by Anishinaabe artist Jo MacDonald, an outrageous comedy celebrating Indigenous

sisterhood; to Something in the Water, a monster-movie spoof inspired by artist S.E. Grummett’s experience coming out as transgender. You can also relive last May with video revivals of hit shows from the 2021 Orlando Fringe, including award winners like Shelly Cooper’s La Divina: The Last Interview of Maria Callas, the haunting Rosegold by Donna Kay Yarborough, and Jordan Bertke’s satire The Sack: A Play on Superheroes. And if you are desperately craving human interaction — albeit via video screen — two productions will be livestreamed on select dates between Jan. 19-24. Phoenix Tears is presenting Recovery, a Zoom-based standalone prequel to their Posthumous sci-fi series about the afterlife; and illusionist Jimmy Ichihana will demonstrate his closeup sleight-of-hand skills via webcam during Magic on the Fringe. One artist who understands the value of pivoting to virtual production is New York-based writer-performer Peter Michael Marino (Desperately Seeking the Exit, Stand Up), who told me that creating the toy theater parody Planet of the Grapes with the long-distance collaboration of director Michole Biancosino and composer Michael Harren was “one of the best things to happen to me as an artist. At this time of my life I think I really needed things to be shifted for me to think differently, and I hate to say it but the pandemic was really good to me,” he says, despite contracting a breakthrough case of COVID around Christmas. With a background in set design but no prior puppetry experience, Marino cast his fruitful reimagining of the 1968 film with orlandoweekly.com

plastic berries and wine corks, which he deftly manipulates using magnetic rods. Until now the show has been performed live, but Orlando audiences will see a recording from Edinburgh Fringe, which Marino says is “the one show that none of the characters entered late [and] none of the sets fell over.” And although this spoof is side-splittingly funny (the puntastic image of “grapes riding scallions” instead of “apes riding stallions” had me rolling), it also remains remarkably faithful to the progressive ideals embedded in Rod Serling’s original script while mocking both Charlton Heston’s clichéd machismo and our modern response to him. “I’m a pretty woke guy,” says Marino, “but I also like making fun of wokeness.” Finally, a couple of Winter Mini-Fest artists are ignoring the cancellation and coming from Kentucky anyway for unofficial, unsanctioned performances. Fringe favorite Erika Kate MacDonald (Evacuated!, Tap Me on the Shoulder) and her musical partner Paul Strickland (13 Dead Dreams of Eugene, Away Now) will premiere her lush, dark DIY comedy The Barn Identity Jan. 19-20 at a secret, socially distanced outdoor venue [full disclosure: It’s my backyard]. ell, 2022 kicked off with a bang, didn’t it? And possibly a cough, wheeze and a sneeze? Such was the case in our household — and every household in the country this holiday season, it seems — so health has been at the forefront of my mind. I’m not really one for resolutions, but after all those heavy December feasts, a little healthy eating can feel mighty good. It certainly did at Clean Eatz, the fastcasual franchise conceived by bodybuilding husband-and-wife duo Don and Evonne Varady. They want to pump (cough) you up, so don’t expect to find foods cooked in any oils or butter — you won’t. Refined sugars are also used sparingly, and there’s a “No Salt in the Kitchen” rule across Clean Eatz’s network of cafes, meaning no added sodium in any of the products they offer. In fact, they make it a point for customers to know exactly what and how much they’re ingesting. Calorie counts, posted next to menu items and labeled on the bevy of frozen grab-and-go meals, are as revealing as a Miley Cyrus wardrobe malfunction. But just because the food is a bit skimpy on salts and fats doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of bite and sizzle in the flavors. Boneless wingz ($5.99) with a light rice flour–and–tapi-

oca starch breading looked like pallid balls of baked drab, but their crisp texture and flavor proved awakening. The house Buffalo sauce was duly employed to finish them off, but of note was the chicken itself. It’s been certified by the American Heart Association, meaning the poultry meets stringent sodium, cholesterol, saturated and trans-fat requirements. The brown rice bowl ($10.55), with said chicken and my choice of broccoli, zucchini and asparagus, was easily the healthiest meal I’ve had all year, and likely will be for the remainder of 2022. Even the accompanying teriyaki sauce, sweetened with fresh pineapple juice and ginger puree, avoids the use of high-fructose corn syrup or refined sugar. The bowl comes with a drink too — no, not Dr. Pepper but your choice of iced citrus or mint tea (unsweetened of course). You could always upgrade to one of their protein-powdered smoothies, like the passion fruitorange-guava ($5.99), which will add 258 calories to your meal. There are burgers offered in a quartet of calorie-limiting protein options — turkey, salmon, black bean or bison. We opted for the latter prepared in the “Clean Eatz”

Twenty Pho Hour, billed as “America’s first 2D Noodle Bar,” has opened on I-Drive. It’s modeled after Tokyo’s 2D Café, with an interior resembling a coloring book. It’s wild … The Bandbox, a 1920s, Art Deco-inspired, spirit-free speakeasy, will open next to Boom-Art in Ivanhoe Village this spring. Alongside non-alcoholic craft cocktails, the bar will offer NA tonics, wines, shrubs, spirits, beer, CBD drinks and aperitifs, as well as beverages to go … Look for the Debonair Supper Club to take over the old Chela Tequila & Tacos space downtown. DSC promises to be a “modern day supper club” reportedly offering “a one-of-akind experience that encompasses some of the best aspects of cuisine, mixology, modern art, and entertainment into one lively and comfortable space.” Expect it to open in late summer/early fall … Popular birria food truck Quesa Loco has opened a permanent space in the same plaza as Mediterranean Deli at 971 W. Fairbanks Ave. near College Park … Dolce, an intimate restaurant and dessert bar celebrating the Roaring ’20s, has opened in the old Eden’s Fresh locale at 500 E. Central Blvd. in Thornton Park … Chef Mike Collantes will soft-open his Filipino-American eatery Taglish 2 at the University Commons plaza near UCF next month. The menu here, as well as at the original location inside Lotte Plaza Market, has been reworked, with a focus being placed on Filipino-style burgers and fried chicken sandwiches … Look for F&D Cantina to soft open next to Ootoya Sushi in Thornton Park any day now … Fork and Flora Latin Bistro, offering a menu of Puerto Rican and Cuban dishes, has opened at Lakeside Village in Windermere … Nearby, the original Windermere location of vegan fast-casual joint Humbl has closed. They are still serving at The Hall on The Yard on Alden Road … Cantina Catrina, the Día de los Muertos-themed Mexican restaurant, has opened at the Florida Mall … Another Mexican joint, Cocina Maya Mexican Grill & Mezcaleria, has opened in Lake Mary … Key West mainstay Sloppy Joe’s has opened an outpost at Icon Park. style, that is, with turkey bacon, romaine, tomato and low-fat American cheese. With no goop of condiments to adulterate the burger, the flavor of the bison ($10.79) — clean! — really came through. The burger is served on a pillowy bun made with Greek yogurt and, along with a side of sweet potato waffle fries, amounted to a 699-calorie meal. Not bad. We also shared the four-square Philly flatbread ($8.79) with shreds of beef, peppers, onions, mozz and spicy ranch. The squares of the flatbread were folded atop one another to create a pizza sandwich of sorts. April Gavin, owner of this particular Clean Eatz franchise in SoDo, knows a thing or two about pizza. She served as managing partner of the original Pizzeria Uno for 17 years before shifting focus. “I served a lot of people a lot of unhealthy food in the past, so it’s nice to be able to offer them something on the opposite end of the health spectrum,” she says. Indeed, Pizzeria Uno once served a heart-crimping “Whole Hog Burger” that came in at 2,850 calories. No such ridiculousness here. In fact, not all who pop by the café come here to eat. We saw folks stockpiling microwaveable frozen meals for the week (I quite enjoyed the Buffalo mac and cheese) and some picking up their customized meal plans (they start at $41 for 5 meals). It’s a threepronged approach to healthy eating that’s made Clean Eatz one of the more successful franchises in the nation and, dare I say, winners out of, cough, reso-losers. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO New streaming shows premiering this week that you won’t want to miss by Steve Schneider PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: Cheer — Season 2 finds the cheerleading team of Texas’ Navarro College coping with the COVID crisis and the arrest of member Jerry Harris on childpornography charges as they work toward the national championships in Daytona. Right. Because if you’re trying to get away from the ’rona and sex crimes, Florida is definitely where you wanna go. (Netflix) Wild Things: Siegfried and Roy — I swear on a stack of Bibles that the official promo for this documentary about the celebrated Vegas entertainers refers to them having been “lionized” by their adoring fans. So in case you were wondering, unfortunate phraseology is going to continue its winning streak in 2022. (Apple TV+)

PREMIERES THURSDAY: Brazen — Nora Roberts’ novel Brazen Virtues becomes a suspense/romance flick in which a mystery writer (Alyssa Milano) discovers that her murdered sister had been working as a cam girl. Call me a libertine, but it’s the “murdered” part that bothers me more. (Netflix) The Journalist — The 2019 film The Journalist won Best Picture in the Japan Academy Prize competition for its portrayal of a crusading reporter on the trail of a government scandal. Now director Michihito Fujii offers up a series with the same name and focus but different characters. They still work at the same newspaper, though, because apparently not even Japan can sustain more than one of those things these days. (Netflix)

My Mom, Your Dad — It sounds like the playground taunt of a particularly confused third-grader, but it’s actually a reality series about single parents who have to cohabitate. The kicker: Their kids are secretly their neighbors, and are trying to get the old duffers to hook up in the combinations they prefer. The show is created by Greg Daniels of The Office, so expect all the smooth sentimentality of Michael Scott’s relationship with Pam’s mother. (HBO Max) Next Influencer — Making the leap from YouTube to streaming (and yes, it’s definitely 2022 when that’s something to boast about), this reality competition is entering its third season of determining which contestant has the most aptitude for getting impressionable teenagers to buy shit they themselves don’t actually use. I’m holding out for Instagram’s Next Top Body Shamer, especially if the participants are subject to lawsuits from the parents of the deceased. (Paramount+) Peacemaker — James Gunn wrote all eight episodes of this spinoff series while he was directing last year’s well-received feature The Suicide Squad. And what did David Ayer manage to accomplish while he was filming 2016’s similarly named but almost universally reviled Suicide Squad? Hopefully, he got to knit himself a nice muffler. (HBO Max) Wolf Like Me — We’re promised a big reveal in every one of the six episodes as Josh Gad’s widower character strikes up a complicated relationship with a woman (Isla Fisher) who’s keeping a dark secret. Let me guess: They met on the set of My Mom, Your Dad. Back when she was still a man. (Peacock)

PREMIERES FRIDAY: Archive 81 — Making the leap from a popular podcast to streaming (which was totally something to boast about last year), the supernatural-inquiry franchise mutates into a drama series in which a collection of 25-year-old VHS tapes reveals the truth behind a satanic cult. OK, I take back my insinuation that there’s a lack of vision going on here: Anyone can throw a bunch of “found footage” on the screen and call it an homage to The Blair Witch Project, but when your show is about people who get to second-guess somebody else’s found footage, your indiscriminate nostalgia has moved into full-on Blair Witch 2 territory. (And who had January 2022 in that betting pool?) (Netflix) Hotel Transylvania: Transformania — The fourth installment in the series that’s best described as this generation’s Mad Monster Party is the first not to feature Adam Sandler as the voice of Dracula. And its intended October 2021 theatrical run got changed to a streaming-only January release so it wouldn’t get its ass kicked by Addams Family 2. Gosh, it must be gooooood. (Amazon Prime) The House — Stop-motion animation is the vehicle for a darkly comic trio of tales concerning the human and animal inhabitants of one particular abode. In the game of lowered expectation that is seeing erstwhile legends a few decades into their career, Erasure never fails to bring the elusive “it” live. Their 2018 Orlando tour stop turned the Dr. Phillips Center’s ornate Walt Disney Theater into a dance club, the full house on their feet the entire time — and some hardy souls making a beeline stageward, assigned seats be damned. Bell strutted and posed out front and center, voice utterly undiminished by time, while a besuited Clarke surveyed it all coolly atop of a tower of colorful neon, only his synths for company. The set was a stunning parade of hit after hit, a soundtrack of 1980s and ’90s nightlife. The finish of the night saw Clarke descending from on high to pick up an acoustic guitar and strum an encore of “A Little Respect” side by side with Bell. The genuine warmth and camaraderie between the two extended out toward the crowd, and was more than reciprocated back at them. “When you have a job like I do, you kind of feel like you’re giving love to lots and lots of people,” Bell candidly told OW’s Jesse Feinman back in 2018. “It’s really such a privilege to feel loved by somebody.” And he was right. The lyrics to one song aired on that night, their late-’80s single “Stop!”, have been lodged in our heads on endless repeat while writing this piece. Verses ostensibly about romantic love have taken on a more haunting, teasing tone as Omicron causes a lot of folks to take a raincheck on going out to keep their loved ones healthy. “We’ll be together again / I’ve been waiting for a long time.” Is this a triumphant celebration, a delayed promise or even a plea circa 2022? Maybe a little bit of all three.

On their new release, Orlando post-metal band Royal Graves emerge sans singer with a new look as an instrumental trio. As the straightforwardly titled Raw Demos suggests, they’re still in the demo phase of their career even several years in. But this latest batch of recordings — their first in two years — marks a clear and concrete advancement in their sound. Atmospheric and hulking, these eight massive tracks of sludgy, doomed metalgaze amount to a pummeling odyssey. So forget the deceptively modest title. Even rough without mixing or mastering, this album is a solid capture of one of the most modern heavy bands coming out of Orlando right now. Raw Demos is available now on Royal Graves’ Bandcamp. Brand-new project Fabulous Weapon could be the showcase for the next power couple to emerge from the Orlando underground. It’s the joint venture of Alien Witch’s Dee Crittenden and Juno White, whom I last saw live performing solo as Jün back in the socially carefree days of December 2019, opening for Miami punk provocateurs Period Bomb. Besides beginning to perform around town recently, Fabulous Weapon just made their recorded debut with a self-titled, eightsong album of wiry rock rawness. From Crittenden’s throbbing music to White’s hypnotic singing, it’s a darkly seductive introduction that dances between temptation and provocation. Fabulous Weapon is available on Bandcamp as a name-your-price download. While they’re a pretty steady presence on the live circuit, Orlando indie-pop quartet

As an artist, his own sound is steeped in the holy garage trinity of early rock & roll, punk and blues. And his swings through town are becoming a rousing Orlando winter tradition. This multimedia event will be an intimate listening party for the duo’s debut album, as well as an art show for their latest paintings and illustrations. (6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, Casselberry Art House, free) Cory Branan, Danny Attack: Across many years of regular stops here, Tennessee alt-country hero Cory Branan has a long and loving relationship with Orlando. While his candid, literate style would deliver live anywhere, here it lands with a resonance usually reserved for a hometown crowd. Opening will be local folk punker Danny Attack. (9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, Will’s Pub, $15-$18) Baroness: If you’ve already clocked this concert’s ticket price and you’re still reading this then, hallelujah, you’ve survived your heart attack. But maybe it would soften the sticker shock if I told you this was designed to be an extra special engagement with the Southern progressive-metal lords on a tour of up-close performances in rooms much smaller than they usually play where online ticket buyers choose their setlist. “VAXXED AND CONFUSED”

My boyfriend is male, I am female, and we’ve been together almost three years. We live alone in separate homes, but we spend about three or four nights a week together. We’re both fully vaxxed and boosted, and we mask in public, etc. On the Monday before Christmas, I started feeling mild symptoms but tested negative. My boyfriend felt fine, and we spent a few nights together that week. On the morning of Christmas Eve, I took a second at-home test and it was positive. So I canceled plans to see a friend that afternoon and spoke to my boyfriend. Our Christmas Eve plans involved dinner with some of his family members. An hour later he called and said he tested negative and that he thinks the best thing would be for me to isolate alone on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. He was still planning to go see his family. I burst into tears. He’d already been exposed and if his foremost concern was protecting his family, the logical thing to do would be to minimize contact with them, not me. I couldn’t believe he was going to leave me at home alone over Christmas when we’d already had so much close contact that week. And he knows that spending holidays together as a couple is important to me! He called me back, we argued, and then he offered to have me come over to his house to sleep in the guest room. Once I was there, he changed his mind and we wound up sharing his bed. The next morning, I wanted to clear the air and he told me that he was angry about my behavior. He thinks I was being selfish and risked further exposing him. I am really confused and hurt by the way everything has unfolded. Which one of us is being an asshole here? Flamingly Upset Couple Knows Conflict Over Virus Is Dumb “I’m not going to assign the title of ‘asshole’ to either the letter writer, or her boyfriend,” said Dr. Stacy De-Lin, M.D., a boardcertified physician who shares sound science about COVID-19 on her invaluable Instagram

account. “But there is a clear public health answer to this question: The writer should have isolated away from her boyfriend as soon as she knew she was positive, and her boyfriend, having known he had a significant exposure, should not have attended any family gatherings.” While Dr. De-Lin doesn’t feel comfortable assigning the title of “asshole” to either of you, FUCKCOVID, I’m gonna go ahead and cut the asshole in half here — in a display of Solomonic wisdom — and award the title of “asshole” to both of you. But you shouldn’t feel too bad about that, FUCKCOVID, seeing as this never-ending pandemic is bringing out the asshole in all of us. “In addition to addressing public health, we also need to address the incredible mental health toll that nearly two years of a pandemic has taken on all of us,” De-Lin said. “Many of us longed to see our families and friends and were devastated when those plans were once again upended this year. Furthermore, the guidance on rapid testing, as well as the guidance on what vaccinated folks can and can’t do, has been constantly changing. So it’s no wonder that her boyfriend still wanted to find a way to see his family and thought he could do so safely, and that the writer didn’t want to be alone on Christmas when I’m sure she was already feeling so isolated.” And to put things in perspective, FUCKCOVID, it’s not like you punched a flight attendant or said, “Let’s Go, Brandon!” to Joe and Jill Biden on Christmas Eve. All you did was get upset. And you were right about one thing: If your boyfriend was gonna see anyone on Christmas Eve, it should’ve been you. Considering how much time you’d spent together after you became symptomatic (but before testing positive), you could reasonably argue that if you were going to expose him, you’d already exposed him. So, in the spirit of harm reduction, he could’ve and should’ve cancelled his plans with his family and spent the holiday with you instead. And that’s what he did, right? So, as much as the suggestion that you spend Christmas alone may have upset you, you didn’t spend Christmas alone, right? So, maybe give your asshole boyfriend some credit for that? All that said, your boyfriend could reasonably argue that you could’ve and should’ve isolated yourself at the onset of your symptoms and not spent multiple nights with him before you predictably tested positive. But if you were to let go of your anger about him suggesting you spend Christmas alone, maybe that would inspire him to let go of his anger about not seeing his family. Because

at the end of the day, FUCKCOVID, it was the same desire for human contact that prompted you to put your boyfriend at risk (by hanging out with him after the onset of symptoms) and prompted your boyfriend to contemplate putting his family at risk (by hanging out with them after a significant exposure). So, recognizing your mutual assholery, maybe — in the spirit of the holiday — you two can forgive each other and move the fuck on. While I had Dr. De-Lin on the line, I asked her for some advice for all of us assholes on getting through the next wave of this seemingly-never-ending pandemic. “We have ways that we can prevent the spread of the Omicron variant: get vaccinated and boosted, isolate when positive or after a high-risk exposure, wear masks in indoor settings, and keep gatherings outdoors,” De-Lin said. “The COVID Omicron variant is not only significantly more infectious than any variant we’ve seen so far, but it’s also coming at the worst possible time: the holiday season. So it’s running rampant through the country and the world, and hospitals are already at the breaking point, making it more important than ever to avoid catching and spreading the virus.” As difficult as it might seem right now — and it seems mighty difficult — taking the long view will help us get through this. “It’s important to remember that this wave, and the pandemic itself, will get much better, and we will be able to gather with our families and friends again in the ways that we used to, without fear,” De-Lin said. “In the meantime, I hope that the letter writer and her boyfriend, and all of us, can be patient and forgiving with each other in these challenging times.” Follow Dr. Stacy De-Lin on Instagram @stacydelin_md. In the mid-to-late 1980s, when I was a toddler, my father had an affair. For some reason, he confessed to my mother in the early 1990s. She was furious, and they separated for two years. My sister and I stayed with our mom during the week, and we shared a room in our father’s two-bedroom apartment on the weekends. During this time my mother frequently and loudly badmouthed him and would call him “the man in the apartment.” After two years they got back together, probably “for the kids,” but my mom constantly held the infidelity over my father’s head. to my father as “the man in the apartment.” I hated this and I thought we all would have been better off had they just divorced. Their histrionics (her histrionics) and some incredibly punitive nuns instilled in me, a heterosexual male, the idea that boys are stupid and bad, and girls are mean and inflict punishment. I developed shame about being male coupled with a resentment of women, issues I’m still working through. Now my parents are well into their 70s and my mother has actually gotten worse. My mother somehow found his former mistress online and uses her photo as her screensaver. She brings up the affair constantly and bullies my father about it daily. This has been going on for 30 years! Right now, I’m out of town for the holidays with my mom and my sister and my dad told me he might move out before she returns. Is this salvageable? Should I insist he stay? For the first half of my life (I’m nearly 40) I was firmly on “Team Mom.” That has radically shifted in recent years. My dad can be a real jackass, but he has carried this cross for too long and doesn’t deserve this. Sad And Disappointed Seeing Ongoing Nightmare “The victim of the affair is not always the victim of the marriage,” as famed psychotherapist and author Esther Perel says, and your parents’ marriage may be the best single example of a marriage where the cheater is (or became) the victim. Yes, SADSON, your dad wronged your mom when he had that affair 30 years ago. (An affair he should’ve kept his mouth shut about.) But if your mom couldn’t bring herself to forgive your dad and/or couldn’t stop punishing him — or, worse yet, if she only took him back so she could punish every day for the rest of his life — then your mom long ago ceded the moral high ground to your dad. Someone who can’t forgive infidelity in a reasonable period of time (like, say, during a two-year separation) has no business taking a cheating spouse back. And someone who can’t resist involving their children in a long, vindictive, self-pitying campaign to destroy their cheating spouse has no business having children in the first place. Your dad should move out, your mom should get a mental health assessment, and you and your sister should stop — finally — allowing your mother to abuse you like this. P.S.
