Poor Gov. Ron DeSantis, never at a loss for words when it comes to riffing on how Dr. Fauci sucks, etc., couldn’t seem to string together more than a couple of words to condemn the actual Neo-Nazis who recently held a rally in the city a couple of weekends ago, complete with swastikas aplenty and “88” (code for “Heil Hitler”) scrawled on signs and banners. As far as local officials go, Sheriff John Mina promised charges for three of the fascist jackasses who assaulted a Jewish motorist who got out of his car to talk to them (see page 11). @Amanda Lowrey Reseburg I can’t believe that idiot has the audacity to have a sign that reads “defend our homeland.” Funny, he doesn’t look Native American. I could be wrong, though. @Chris Mennens Why do they always flex white pride and power in areas that are basically already full of white homeowners? Please try to convert and spread your message in the John Young, Pine Hills and OBT areas of Orlando so you can reach a larger audience and let them know. I’m sure people who live there would love to know more about your peaceful message of white inequality. @Liz Miller Q: If it is so hard for Ron DeSantis to condemn Nazi behavior in Florida, what does it say about him? The tone-deaf placard outside the former Marlow’s Tavern in Winter Park — trumpeting “She’s back … xoxo” — signals the return of Chelsie DiPaolo to the local restaurant scene. DiPaolo ran two vegan restaurants with her ex-husband, Jamie Savage, until multiple harassment claims by employees unveiled alleged misdeeds by Savage. DiPaolo ‘AGREE TO DISAGREE’

filed for divorce in the months that followed, and both restaurants eventually ceased operations. DiPaolo has since alleged that her marriage was abusive in posts to Instagram. Reactions were strong all around. @Francesca Fey The fact that Chelsie posted the sign, “She’s back XOXO,” is terribly insensitive. Her former employees claim that she knew about the sexual harassment/acts performed by her husband at the time and she turned a blind eye to their cries for help. Ignoring her employees’ pleas and dismissing them makes her as bad as he was. Her name is tarnished with or without the last name Savage. If she wants to rebuild herself, joking about coming back into the restaurant biz is not the way to go. All of Orlando knows what she did, or rather, what she didn’t do, which was protect her employees. @Bex Martin She has still issued no apologies, and even shows up at the workplace of one of her victims and discusses the allegations around her and her co-workers. I wanted to believe that she has changed — but tormenting a victim in her workplace (where she cannot escape), proves to me that she’s the same ol’ Chelsie. I haven’t signed an NDA, but some of the victims have. It’s all really gross, and this sign is a huge slap in the face to the victims (myself included). I had to schedule an emergency therapy session for myself when this all came to light. Some of the girls are still suffering from night terrors related to the abuse. Three Neo-Nazis arrested in connection with Orlando rally Three men have been arrested in connection with a neo-Nazi rally in the Waterford Lakes area of Orlando last month. Joshua Terrell, and Burt Colucci and Jason Brown were arrested over the weekend after they were captured on video assaulting a Jewish man who confronted them at their hate rally. The man told police he was peppersprayed and punched by the assembled members of the National Socialist Movement and had his phone stolen. Terrell and Colucci are charged with battery with a hate crime enhancement. Brown is charged with grand theft. Orange County Sheriff John Mina said that his office would “not stand for hate in our community” when announcing the arrests on Twitter.

Florida DOH appeals order to explain why they stopped releasing COVID-19 data The Florida Department of Health has gone to appeals court in a battle about whether it should provide daily COVID-19 data, as it seeks to be shielded from explaining officials’ decision-making about releasing the information. Attorneys for the department filed a petition last Wednesday at the 1st District Court of Appeal as part of a lawsuit filed in August by the Florida Center for Government Accountability and state Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, D-Orlando, and later joined by several media organizations. The underlying lawsuit alleges the Department of Health violated public-records laws by turning down requests for daily COVID-19 data. The data, in part, would have provided county and demographic information about COVID-19 cases. But the two sides have tangled for months about depositions of department officials and the plaintiffs’ attempts to get information about why the department decided to stop releasing daily COVID-19 data. The department issued daily reports until June but then shifted to posting weekly information that is far less detailed.

Viral video shows cop who took part in Capitol riots violently arresting Black man A viral TikTok is bringing increased scrutiny to Apopka police, as it shows members of that department violently arresting former law enforcement officer Jason Friend. In the clips that have been shared, Friend is shown being pulled out of his car in his own driveway, punched repeatedly and tased. In the video, Friend screamed and repeatedly told the officers that he’s an ex-cop. Neighbors acquainted with Friend yelled at the police to leave him alone. One of the officers yelled back at them to “shut the fuck up,” which led to a shouting match between neighbors and police. As Friend rolled over onto his side and continued to yell about his status as a veteran and ex-cop — at one point he shouted, “I served this country and this is the fucking thanks I get?” — an officer approached a cell phone-wielding neighbor and told him it was “offensive” to try and tell police how to do their jobs.

A man attempted to rob a DeLand credit union in a Sonic the Hedgehog mask A man in a Sonic the Hedgehog mask tried to rob a credit union in DeLand last week, and he was (unsurprisingly) fast enough to get away before the police arrived. Witnesses at the Florida Credit Union told police they believe the robber was a man, based on his tone of voice. He entered the bank wearing the cartoon mask and threatened a teller with a hammer. Witnesses said the man banged on the glass separating him from the tellers with the hammer before being confronted by a bank employee. He then fled, and a search of the area was unsuccessful. NEWS NEW LEGISLATIVE SESSION NOTES Republican-friendly redistricting, more restrictions on voting by mail, legal abortion essentially banned, and more stuff your elected representatives have been up to BY RYAN DAILEY AND JIM TURNER, NSF

he once-a-decade redistricting process has headed to the courts but a new congressional map is on hold, as Gov. Ron DeSantis wades into a potential battle over a North Florida district. The Florida Senate voted unanimously last week to approve a plan (SJR 100) that sets new boundaries for the 40 Senate seats and 120 state House seats, sending the redrawn legislative districts to the Florida Supreme Court for review. “We can and should be very proud of the work we’ve done here today,” Senate President Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, said. “And now we’ll see if the courts are equally as proud.” Opponents have raised concerns that Florida’s growing minority populations haven’t been adequately addressed in the district changes, which likely will maintain Republican control of the Legislature into the 2030s. The maps could lead to the GOP’s dominance of the Senate slipping by one seat and the House by seven seats, based on voting patterns in the 2020 election. Work on the congressional map paused this week after DeSantis asked the Supreme Court for an advisory opinion about his effort to revamp what is now Congressional District 5. The district is held by Congressman Al Lawson, a Black Democrat, and was designed to help with minority representation. It stretches more than 200 miles from Jacksonville to west of Tallahassee. In a letter to Chief Justice Charles Canady, DeSantis focused, in part, on what is known as a “non-diminishment standard” in the Florida Constitution. That standard prevents districts from being drawn that will diminish the ability of minority voters to elect candidates of their choice. “Specifically, I ask whether the Florida Constitution’s non-diminishment standard requires that congressional districts be drawn to connect minority populations from distant and distinct geographic areas if doing so would provide the assembled minority group sufficient voting strength — although not a majority of the proposed district — to elect a candidate of its choice,” the governor wrote. Lawson issued a statement expressing disappointment in what he called DeSantis’ “continued assault on the rights of Black and minority voters.” The court set a deadline of noon Monday, Feb. 7, for “interested persons” to submit briefs. Meanwhile, state Attorney General Ashley Moody has 15 days to file a petition with the Supreme Court seeking a ruling on the validity of the redrawn legislative districts. The court will have 30 days to issue an order, with opponents and supporters of the maps able to file briefs.

MAKING VOTING TOUGHER As a federal judge weighs the constitutionality of an elections law passed last year (see page 15), the Florida House last Thursday started moving forward with a new proposal that includes adding still more steps for voting by mail, as well as creating a state office to investigate alleged elections fraud. The House Public Integrity & Elections Committee voted 12-6 to approve the proposal. Earlier in the week, the Senate Ethics and Elections Committee also approved the Senate version of the bill.

SAYING GOODBYE TO THE GOAT Gov. DeSantis held out hope last week that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team he grew up rooting for, would get one more season with future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady. But those hopes were crushed. “I saw the reports (of his retirement), and I was like, ‘Oh, man.’ And then I was glad to hear him say, ‘I haven’t made a decision yet,’” DeSantis said Tuesday while in Dunedin. “So, who knows what’s gonna happen? But all I can say is he’s better at 44 than just about any of these other guys at 28 or 30 in their primes.” DeSantis’ hopes were dashed by the time the governor got to Miami for his next morning appearances. Brady, the three-time National Football League most valuable player and five-time Super Bowl MVP, announced on Instagram he was retiring after 22 seasons. “I have always believed the sport of football is an ‘all-in’ proposition,” Brady, whose teams won seven Super Bowl games, wrote. “If 100 percent competitive commitment isn’t there, you won’t succeed. And success is what I love so much about our game.” DeSantis, calling himself a “long-suffering Bucs fan,” kept the praise flowing even after the announcement. “To be able to have him in Florida for two years was really something that a lot of people, and not just in the Tampa Bay area, really appreciated,” DeSantis said while at Vizcaya Museum & Gardens in Miami. “He is the greatest of all time that’s ever put on a pair of football spikes. I don’t think it’s even close.” DeSantis added he hopes Brady, who spent most of his career with the New England Patriots, remains a Florida resident.

Under the bills, people voting by mail would be required to write in a designated space the last four digits of their driver’s license numbers, state identification-card numbers or Social Security numbers. Another part of the bills would create an “Office of Election Crimes and Security” in the Department of State. The office, in part, could initiate inquiries and conduct preliminary investigations into allegations of election-law violations. The election-law changes are being considered as Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker holds a trial over a sweeping elections law passed by the Legislature last year. Plaintiffs allege that the 2021 law will make it harder for Black and Hispanic voters to cast mail-in ballots and register to vote. During testimony this week, Walker at times appeared skeptical of plaintiffs’ argument that the legislation was designed to target people of color expressly. “Rather than discriminatory intent when there’s no substantial evidence … of fraud as a justification, isn’t it just as easily the justification that the law was passed to keep the former president happy?” Walker asked. The League of Women Voters of Florida, the Florida State Conference of the NAACP, Disability Rights Florida and two dozen other groups filed lawsuits challenging the measure. The trial focuses on parts of the law dealing with mail-in ballots and third-party registration groups, which plaintiffs say minority voters rely on more heavily than whites. ost-Reconstruction history, firsthand narrative and statistics have laid the foundation in a legal challenge to a state election law that plaintiffs say will curtail disabled, Black and Hispanic Floridians’ ability to cast ballots and register to vote. The 2021 law (SB 90) was part of GOP leaders’ efforts nationally to make it harder for people to vote by mail after former President Donald Trump’s election loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Although Trump handily won in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis championed the election-law changes and the Republican-controlled Legislature passed the measure despite the objections of Democrats, elections supervisors and voting-rights groups. The League of Women Voters of Florida, the Florida State Conference of the NAACP, Disability Rights Florida and two dozen other groups filed lawsuits challenging the measure. While the plaintiffs maintain that the law is intended to make it harder for Black and Hispanic residents to vote, Republicans contend the changes are necessary to ensure election integrity. The trial, which began Monday in federal court in Tallahassee, focuses on several parts of the law dealing with mailin ballots and third-party registration groups, which plaintiffs say minority voters rely on more heavily than whites when signing up to vote. Testifying for the plaintiffs on Wednesday and Thursday, Northwestern University political science professor Traci Burch said legislators knew the proposed election-law changes would adversely Black and Latino people more than white voters when they signed off. “The authors of SB 90 were aware of concerns about the racially disparate impact that the law would have on voters of color and passed the law anyway,” Burch said, adding that lawmakers rejected amendments intended to “mitigate that disparate impact.” Burch said she analyzed the legislation in the context of a “chain of incidents of racial discrimination that has proceeded unbroken” since the post-Civil War era. Burch argued there’s been no “natural stopping point” in that trend even since the Voting Rights Act was passed more than a half-century ago, prompting questions from Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker.

“How does the motivation of folks in 1865 or 1965, many of whom are no longer living, inform me as to what the legislators who passed Senate Bill 90 were doing?” Walker asked. “Help me to understand why I’m going to look to the long arc of history as opposed to the arc that would apply to those that actually made decisions in this case.” Today’s actions are “past dependent,” Burch responded. “It’s the idea that what happened in the past both informs, influences and shapes what happens in the future, both by ways of setting up past policies instead of the policy today. … Past politics and past policies and actions shape ideology,” she said. The plaintiffs’ witnesses also disputed Republican lawmakers’ arguments the changes were necessary to ensure election integrity, arguing that no evidence exists that widespread fraud took place in Florida and pointing to DeSantis’ and other GOP leaders’ praise of the state’s handling of the 2020 presidential election. Republican lawmakers pushed through the changes as Trump and his allies spread unfounded allegations of “fraud” in states that the former president lost to Biden. As the plaintiffs laid out their case this week, Walker at times appeared skeptical of the argument that the 2021 legislation was designed to target people of color expressly. “Rather than discriminatory intent when there’s no substantial evidence … of fraud as a justification, isn’t it just as easily the justification that the law was passed to keep the former president happy? And what am I as a fact finder to do when I’m looking at the context and the surrounding facts to pick and choose between the nefarious racial or pernicious racial intent versus, it’s done to keep a political figure happy?” Walker probed. The 2021 law set new restrictions on the availability and use of drop boxes, which were widely employed by elections supervisors in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic for people to drop off completed vote-by-mail ballots. It also required voters to request mail-in ballots each election cycle, rather than every four years as was previously allowed, and imposed new restrictions on third-party groups engaging in voter registration. According to a report submitted by the plaintiffs, Black and Hispanic voters are

five times more likely to register to vote through third-party organizations. Black voters also doubled their use of mail-in ballots in 2020, research showed. But while questioning the plaintiffs’ witnesses this week, attorneys for Secretary of State Laurel Lee and national Republican organizations, which joined as defendants in the lawsuit, tried to establish that the changes were benign. “Would you agree with me that Senate Bill 90 applies to all Floridians, regardless of ethnicity?” Mohammad Jazil, who represents Lee, asked University of Florida political science professor Sharon Austin on Wednesday. “Yes, sir,” Austin said. Jazil picked apart a report by Austin that included other research showing that mail-in ballots submitted by Black and Hispanic voters were disproportionately rejected compared to white voters’ ballots in a handful of select counties. Jazil noted that the report failed to include some of the state’s most populous counties. He also pointed out that Florida voters have elected a Black lieutenant governor, Jennifer Carroll, and that former President Barack Obama twice carried the state. “Would you agree with me that compared to 1982 it has become easier for Blacks to register and vote in Florida?” Jazil asked the professor. “I would say no,” Austin began. “There’s a constant back and forth. When progress is made … when Black and Latino registration and turnout increases … there always ends up being some type of response to make it harder for African-Americans and Latinos to register and turn out. “So I can’t honestly say that, 40 years later, that it is easier to register to vote because African Americans and Latinos are constantly fighting these barriers,” Austin said. The trial is taking place as Republican lawmakers this week rolled out proposals that would add more identification requirements for mail-in ballots; increase the frequency for supervisors to scrub voter rolls; and boost fines for third-party voter registration organizations that don’t follow the law. The proposals would also create an elections security office requested by DeSantis.

From Disability Rights Florida v. Lee, the lawsuit filed by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund on behalf of Disability Rights Florida and Common Cause challenging voter suppression law Senate Bill 90: “While this law affects all voters, the brunt of the harm will be borne by Black voters, Latino voters, and voters with disabilities. “Black and Latino Floridians are more likely to lack the limited forms of identification that are now required to request VBM ballots; are less likely to be able to take time off work to return VBM ballots during work hours; and are less likely to have access to a car, and therefore more likely to rely on third-party VBM ballot return. “Black and Latino voters, in particular, tend to encounter longer lines when voting in person, are therefore more likely to need water and food to make the longer waits tolerable, and have come to rely on the assistance provided by nonprofit groups to those waiting in line to vote. “Voters with disabilities will also be disproportionately burdened by SB 90. Given accessibility issues at polling sites throughout the state, many disabled voters are unable to vote in person, and rely exclusively on VBM ballots and drop boxes to cast their ballots. “In the process of applying for VBM ballots in the first place, many disabled voters face accessibility challenges, whether they seek to make a standing application in person, online, or by telephone, and would be significantly burdened by having to make such requests twice as frequently in order to vote under SB 90’s new provisions. “Many disabled voters, including those living in group residential facilities, rely on caregivers and other non-family members to collect and return their VBM ballots. “Additionally, disabled voters who choose to vote in person — for whom there are no guarantees that they will be approved to move to the front of a line or be provided with a chair while they wait — often face significantly increased burdens when required to wait in long lines to vote.”

Theatre South Playhouse lies outside the orbit of downtown Orlando’s arts scene, but it’s surviving — and thriving Amid the endless parade of tight-

ly scripted presentations I attended at Disney’s Destination D23 convention last November, one of the few presenters on stage who cut through the corporate double-speak and managed to sound like an actual human being was live entertainment creative director Tom Vazzana. So when I recently had the opportunity to interview him, I naturally had dozens of questions I wanted to ask him about his 25-year career directing shows for Walt Disney World, working on everything from the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland to the upcoming refresh of Fantasmic! But Vazzana humbly insisted that our conversation focus on Theatre South Playhouse, where he’s been volunteering his time directing the company’s return to presenting professional theater with this weekend’s opening of a musical he’s had a long history with: Nunsense. To be honest, Theatre South Playhouse has largely flown under my radar, as it’s located in the Dr. Phillips Marketplace shopping plaza that lies outside the orbit of downtown Orlando’s arts scene. But the company, which was founded by executive director Hillary Brook in 2009, opened its Antoinette David Theater in 2016, which it uses as both a professional stage and academic conservatory. Vazzana lived in the Dr. Phillips neighborhood and recalls, “I was intrigued with how this little theater that’s [about] 100 seats was able to survive, when others are struggling.” “I went to a show [and] I was very impressed by the whole thing, but more impressed that Hillary is able to tap into a community and offer educational courses, summer camps, multiple theater shows for children and young adults, and build an audience with what I saw as a faithful parental support system,” Vazzana says. Like most theaters, the COVID-19 pandemic put Theatre South Playhouse’s mainstage productions on pause, but when the time came to relight the footlights, Vazzana enthusiastically offered to helm the classic Catholic comedy Nunsense, going so far as to pitch the project in character wearing full nun drag. Vazzana came to Central Florida in 1995 after working in New York City and on national tours, where his credits included assistant directing Evita under the legendary

In 1995, a musical director friend offered him a stage management gig on a new show she was sure was “going to tank.” Instead of going on unemployment, Vazzana decided, “I love a good bomb,” and ended up as part of the original creative team for writer-director Dan Goggin’s Nunsense: The Musical, which went on to worldwide acclaim. “I just remember ironing nuns’ habits on opening night going ‘What on earth have we got ourselves into?’” says Vazzana. “And then, poof: It was a hit!” In the decades since, Nunsense has spawned a half-dozen sequels and several spinoffs, including the all-male A-Men version coming to Winter Park Playhouse next January. But for Theatre South Playhouse’s production, Vazzana is returning to the show’s roots by re-creating Goggin’s and choreographer Felton Smith’s original staging. In the process, he hopes to tap into the heart and soul beneath the habitual humor that made the original incarnation so enduring. “It doesn’t matter if they’re nuns; they’re talking about themselves and an inspiration from their life that made them become dedicated to something,” Vazzana says about the script’s key emotional scenes. “These moments are so strong that the zaniness around the farce is grounded in these moments. And these moments resonate with everybody, because I don’t have to be a nun

to tell you about my greatest inspiration and how I’m going to move that forward.” For this production of Nunsense, Vazzana has assembled a cast that includes Tay Anderson, Hillary Brook, Kristie Geng and Virginia Roebuck. Leading the ensemble as Reverend Mother Regina is Orlando cabaret icon Andrea Canny, whom Vazzana has been performing with for more than 25 years. “Andrea Canny and I would get an accompanist, and we would go to one of those empty rooms that there were so many of on Orange Avenue,” remembers Vazzana. “We would set up tables and we bought wine, and we did $10 benefits for [the AIDS service organization] CENTAUR.” When I spoke with Vazzana, the Omicron variant was still raging, but Tom remained optimistic about theater’s future despite the disease. “There’s a panic button, and we need this pendulum to swing back, and we need the crazy around it to stop,” says Vazzana. “When we stop panicking will be when theater is able to survive, and theater has always survived.” In the meantime, Vazzana urges everyone to attend Nunsense and support the “great work” Theatre South does “garnering, gathering, educating and instilling enthusiasm in young people” for the performing arts. “You will laugh and be moved and laugh again,” he promises. “And you just might walk away slightly better.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

GRUB HUB The Hall on the Yard brings plenty of sizzle and culinary diversity to Ivanhoe Village BY FAIYAZ KARA

ou may have heard about the hiccups very much like the menu. This double-sided, at the gleaming new Hall on the Yard two-foot-long, graphic designer’s nightmare in Ivanhoe Village, and not the kind employs a very small print to squish in the 130 brought about by stuffing too much food and or so items. The man was keen to recoup of hits and misses, but what they all have in losses incurred by a slew of pandemic-related common, be it the trio of lamb samosas ($14) construction delays, supply-chain slowdowns or a hot chicken sandwich ($15), is that they’re and labor pains, even if it meant taking a bit not cheap. An upmarket food hall is bound to come with of a licking on social media. Generating revenue for the nine vendors housed within its upmarket prices, and dishes from the Chef & I gilded walls was top priority and so, just before stall are the priciest. They also happen to offer some of my favorite dishes at HOTY — none Thanksgiving, HOTY’s doors swung open. There’s a fair bit of damage control to be more so than crispy-skinned duck ($32) sliced done, but — like the song that played when I alongside duck-fat sage waffles with maplefirst set foot inside the food hall said — things macerated blackberry syrup. I’ve ordered the can only get better. And they have. First thing dish on two separate occasions — both times you should know: This is not your typical food superb. Lamb merguez sausage ($17) served hall. It’s full-service, so checking in at the host over mashed mint peas and sided with makrut stand is required, and making a reservation is lime mustard and a pickled mango chutney a good idea. In all my visits here (four by last isn’t the kind of dish I expected to indulge in count) the place has been packed and busy, at a food hall, but there it was. Other standouts:

the deep-water walu ceviche ($18) from panLatin outfit Pasión, highlighted by chilled coconut broth streaked with Peruvian pepper oil; and, from Wabi Sabi, a very dramatic and fusion-y presentation of Tijuana birria short rib ramen coiffed with chili threads and Taijindusted chicharron. The five-chili-roasted shoyu broth was easy to swallow, but that $23 price tag — gulp! — not so much. Same goes for the simple plate of chickpea curry served with coconut milk-infused saffron rice ($16) from Spice Affair, and braised oxtail with rice and peas and plantains ($28) from True Island. I suppose it all goes to pay for the high-end experience HOTY aims to provide — from the custom-engraved furnishings and dinnerware to floor-to-ceiling finery. It’s a striking space, no question, but at times, the experience can feel lacking. As inviting as the inside/outside bar is, HOTY’s bartenders aren’t of the caliber of higher-end cocktail bars in town, at least not consistently. When signature quaffs from the cocktail menu can’t be made because an ingredient is missing (which is often the case, for some reason), replacement suggestions aren’t offered. And beyond the glitter of the crystal lights and dazzling chandeliers, the hall is already showing signs of wear — I noticed scratches on the walls where decorative masks are hung, and a cracked and damaged step leading to the second-floor seating area. Perhaps not surprising given the popularity of the place, which makes parking, at least street parking, a challenge. The Alden Garage offers parking for $3 per hour, though. HOTY brings the looks, and plenty of substance, to the competitive world of food halls (the beer garden with pour-it-yourself taps is a great place to watch the game, BTW), but it doesn’t always feel like you get what you pay for. That said, things are steadily improving and it’s well worth a visit, especially if you’re with a large group with wide-ranging palates. Just beware of sticker shock. And read the fine print.

So her “She’s back … xoxo” sign is in questionable taste but, nevertheless, she is back. Chelsie DiPaolo — aka Chelsie Savage, who, along with ex-husband Jamie Savage, ran Sanctum Cafe and Proper & Wild until they closed amid a storm of sexual harassment and hostile workplace accusations — is opening a new concept in the old Marlow’s Tavern space across from Krispy Kreme in Winter Park … Dochi, makers of fine Japanese mochi donuts, will move from their second-floor perch at East End Market to the downstairs space formerly occupied by Olde Hearth Bread Co. this summer ... Z Asian owners Hien Pham and Huong Nguyen will open a pho ga concept appropriately called Pho Ga Hien Vuong in the Zero Degrees space at 5282 W. Colonial Drive. In addition to the eponymous Vietnamese chicken soup, com ga hai nam (Hainanese-style chicken and rice), goi ga (chicken salad) and other chicken dishes will also be offered. Pho Ga will open this summer … Thai Farm Kitchen, with locations in Brooklyn and Bangkok, has opened in the old RusTeak space in College Park … Sunshine Diner by chef Art Smith will join Wine Bar George and a second location of Cask & Larder at Orlando Airport’s new Terminal C this July … V’s Diner will open this April just a few doors down from Wa Sushi in the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet plaza in Casselberry. V’s will offer scratch-made, 100 percent vegan diner classics … Colombian restaurant Oh Que Bueno will open a second location at 8128 S. Orange Blossom Trail … Loading Zone Philly Steaks will open in the same plaza as Donut King and Mei Garden on Howell Branch Road in Winter Park … Look for a second location of the Doghouse/Soda Fountain to open at 4722 E. Michigan St. next month … Kung Fu Dumpling, offering everything from xiao long bao to seafood dumplings, has opened at Alafaya Square in Oviedo.

Odo Season 2 — Between you and me, I’m still pissed that the Blu-ray/DVD of Paw Patrol: The Movie didn’t come with the U.K. dialogue track as a listening option. Because if animated critters have to sound like human children for some unfathomable reason, it’s a lot more palatable when they have adorable accents. I’ve been hoping for the latter to simply outlive the former, but it won’t be anytime soon if memories of Demi Moore’s unfortunate rendezvous with a pottery wheel keep getting dredged up by copycat projects like The In Between, in which Joey King plays a teenage girl whose dead boyfriend tries to contact her from the spirit world. Listen, whatevs. I’ll just be over here pining for the days when you

Pretzel and the Puppies — A lesser-known book by Curious George creators Margaret and H.A. Rey yields an animated series about a plucky family of dachshunds. And at the risk of sounding like a broken record, the voice cast (led by Mark Duplass and Nasim Pedrad) doesn’t make the slightest effort to sound like dogs in the mold of Scooby or Astro. Originally, the movie was going to carry the same title as the webtoon on which it’s based: Moral Sense. But points to South Korea for realizing that’s not a concept that’s going to translate into big bucks in the USA right about now. (Netflix) Love Is Blind — One week after the international premiere of its Japanese counterpart, the controversial dating show returns to America to find out if there are any couples here who won’t break up when they finally find out what each other look like. One of the contestants is already on record as having signed on for this delayedreveal exercise because “I don’t have boobs or a butt.” So I guess Vince Neil is doing The Masked Singer instead. ritish-Albanian singer-songwriter and pop hero Dua Lipa steers into Orlando for the second night of her much-anticipated “Future Nostalgia Tour” this week. Future Nostalgia, Dua Lipa’s 2020 sophomore album, combines her deep, soulful vocals with a contagious and vibrant production — add in her wondrously powerful pop lyrics and you’ve got yourself a perpetual dancefloor-filler. Hits like “Levitating” and “Don’t Stop Now” are destined to live forever in pop-song paradise. The Future Nostalgia tour has zero “nostalgia” for the setlist or production the way it was originally envisioned back in 2020, before the pandemic sidelined touring. On a tour radically reconfigured by the artist, Dua Lipa promises only the “very best of” her best material will get a live airing — and get

the crowd moving. And speaking of “the best of,” we have to also spotlight Dua Lipa’s new “global style, culture and society” newsletter venture, Service95, launched last week. After the commercial success of her previous band, Chairlift, Polachek earned songwriting credits for Beyoncé’s “No Angel.” In her Ramona Lisa guise, Polachek’s eerie and playful vocal echoes buoyed each track of the Arcadia album, and her ambient alter ego CEP explores heavy and damp electronic vistas. Polachek’s 2019 electro-pop solo debut, Pang, delivered a masterpiece of avant-pop, a heady sermon on love, longing, self-discovery and connection. The album exists like a dream ignited inside a flotation tank: Polachek’s soul-stirring lyrics accompanied by airy instrumentals offer solace and freedom in the self-reflection that often follows isolation and loss, themes that are more and more familiar to many of us. he end of February will mark the end of an era in downtown Orlando nightlife, as landmark dance club Barbarella closes its doors and decamps from downtown Orlando to new — and as yet undisclosed — environs after more than 34 years. Barbarella has been the longest-running nightclub in downtown Orlando, and in a city like ours, where change happens in fast-forward, that’s no mean feat. To those who’ve enjoyed more than a few years in the Orlando club and bar scene, this news hits like a ton of bricks. Through its various incarnations — Beach Club, Barbarella, Independent Bar — the space at the corner of Orange Avenue and Washington Street has been a mainstay destination in downtown Orlando. Besides the redoubtable ’80s New Wave nights on Saturdays, 70 N. Orange Ave. was a destination for edgy and influential alternative rock bands — Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Flaming Lips — and a proving ground for some seminal local acts — Genitorturers, Hatebombs, Potential Frenzy. Barbarella was also an early home to the influential and tastemaking Phat-N-Jazzy DJ night in the mid-’90s. Even to those with little interest in Orlando music

history, Barbarella has been a purveyor of top-level nocturnal diversions. Barbarella club night staples like the aforementioned New Wave night, the monthly Memento Mori gothic night and the now-defunct Mac & Cheese night on Thursdays would bring the crowds and regularly place in our annual “Best of Orlando” awards. And new house/ techno-oriented night Discothèque has been going strong with cred-heavy guest DJs for the better part of a year. No matter how you look at it, this move is going to leave a massive void on the Orange Avenue strip of bars and clubs, both physically and historically. “From Visage to the Edge, Orlando has a history of legendary nightclubs. But Barbarella is without peer,” says Orlando Weekly music writer Bao Le-Huu. “Its music culture, sense of scene and sheer longevity are a combination that make it a singularly historical place. It’s why an unreasonable proportion of my life has been spent there.” Barbarella owner (and resident Saturday night DJ) John Gardner spoke to OW about the move, and right off the bat he wanted to dispel some rumors. He’s not leaving downtown Orlando because his landlord is raising his rent or forcing him out.

“Basically what I’m selling in downtown Orlando is not working. I think there’s a market for this and I think we would do better in another location,” says Gardner. “Downtown Orlando has got a fairly young clientele and we’ve just struggled since COVID because a lot of my customer base was a little bit older. … Once COVID hit, they got out of the habit of coming into the club and some of them have not really returned.” “My landlord has been great. Frank [Hamby] has treated me more than fair. He’s been my landlord for 30 years or so,” says Gardner. “He’s never been a problem. He’s the best landlord I could have ever asked for.” Gardner announced that Barbarella — freshly re-rebranded last year after a long stint as Independent Bar or I-Bar — was leaving downtown Orlando with little fanfare at the end of January on the venue’s social media channels. Despite the seeming suddenness of the announcement, this decision appears to have been in the works for some time. Gardner tells OW that a new location is sorted (with plenty of parking, music to the ears of any Barbarella fan) — though he demurs on the specific address — and a reopening date will be announced in short order. “I may choose to reveal the location the day before,” says Gardner. “I don’t want to be arrogant about it because I certainly don’t want to have nobody show up. But you certainly can’t have too many people show up on the first day and then they have a bad experience. … We just want to make sure it’s a smooth transition.” In the interim, Gardner says that Barbarella will be open through the balance of February.

So even though Barbarella is not closing forever and the move seems, in fact, to be part of a larger plan to grow the club, it’s impossible not to feel nostalgic about such a storied building going quiet. It’s been quite a ride. Pre-Barbarella, Gardner — then a hustling young New Wave DJ — was let go in 1985 from his gig hosting a “video nightclub” event that he’d been running since the year before at the Hague Lounge in a Lake Buena Vista hotel. The whole thing was getting a little too edgy for the tourists — too many mohawks and a little too much mayhem, you understand. Just over a month later, in late 1985, Gardner moved on to his own space on Orange Blossom Trail. He dubbed it Faith in Physics, promoting the club by calling 200 phone numbers he’d collected at the Hague. Faith in Physics lasted for two halcyon years and then shifted operations over to downtown Orlando — “There were no clubs on Orange Avenue at all,” recalls Gardner — on New Year’s Eve 1987. And there he would remain, through several name changes and club redesigns, experiments with a café menu, and a downtown changing rapidly all around him. “I think the reason why it’s lasted is because the owner and the DJ were the same person. So I understood what I wanted to do and … I wanted to make a living, but I also wanted to have fun,” muses Gardner. Live music became a staple of Gardner’s operations early on, thanks to a chance visit by the infamous Jim Faherty, who immediately started booking bands big and small, first at Faith in Physics and then Barbarella. “As soon as I got Faith in Physics open, within weeks, this guy shows up, Jim

Faherty, and he says, ‘Hey, can I do shows on the nights you’re closed?’ And I said sure,” remembers Gardner of the beginnings of their partnership. “Jim would book some shows that would do very little business. And I would go, ‘Wow, no bands ever came to me and said they didn’t get paid.’ I never heard anything bad from the bands. And then every three or four months he had a huge show and we would be packed. … Like the Circle Jerks and Suicidal Tendencies. He was able to pocket a few thousand from those and then spend it on bands that he liked.” Though resolutely forward-facing with his business, Gardner does allow himself a moment to think back to a personal highlight at Barbarella. “When we had Smashing Pumpkins during the first year I was down there — it was 1988. We didn’t really have a stage, we just had a raised seating platform near the front of the club. And behind that were all the sliding glass doors that are still there to this day. And we were so packed. We were just so full. … Jim had security on stage but the stage was only 12 inches tall, and so people were just almost being forced onto the stage by the surge of bodies. “The thing I remember most is that people would crowdsurf and there was literally … they would roll to the left, to stage left, and they would hit the wall and they couldn’t fall! And then they would roll all the way across the crowd to stage right, and they would hit the wall there. … They were just rolling around on top of the crowd. And that happened for a solid hour, there were people crowdsurfing and they couldn’t fall. They would go all the way to the back and then get off the crowd. … No one was injured. It was so hot in there that my pants were soaking

wet. That happened at the Butthole Surfers too. Both of those shows were like that.” It would be nearly impossible to list every epochal or historically significant concert of club night that happened within Barbarella’s walls, but it’s a safe bet that Orlando Weekly photographer and local music chronicler Jim Leatherman was at a decent percentage of them. He supplied us with some priceless archival shots (see more at orlandoweekly. com) and mused about the importance of Barbarella. “I spent some of the best evenings of my life inside John’s club,” says Leatherman. “So many incredible shows happened within those walls. It was the spot for many a great local show too! Truly special musical times, in a magical musical place.” Over the last year, the Friday night Discothèque parties picked up the maverick torch of the club’s mission to bring new sounds to the people. This came in the form of freewheeling dance parties headlined by adventurous locals and touring titans — the likes of Todd Terry, DJ Three and Felix Da Housecat all performed. For Discothèque promoter Nick Whitney, Barbarella was the “perfect venue” for his events. “Anytime I went downtown I would make a point to stop there — and it being a club exclusively focused on dancing, it was a no-brainer,” says Whitney. “I’m very grateful that John and Mickey allowed that to happen, as it helped grow our scene and create an environment that was lacking in Orlando. My absolute favorite memory was at our first large booking at Barbarella with Todd Terry. I was in the middle of the dancefloor looking

around at an absolutely packed club and every single person was grinning ear-to-ear, dancing their asses off. That was one of the most gratifying moments of my life so far and fueled the fire to keep growing.” Demetrios Pappas (DJ Lavidicus) has run the monthly Memento Mori gothic night at Barbarella since 2014. Pappas concedes that he was surprised and saddened by the news of Barbarella’s impending closing, but he is putting all of his energy into making Memento Mori’s “Last Dance” finale on Monday, Feb. 21, a memorable one. Pappas promises “one last night of the best music in the genre and a huge group photo of everyone on the dancefloor at midnight.” “I would like to add a very heartfelt thank-you to Orlando for all the support and making my dream come true and I am truly heartbroken to see it go like this,” says Pappas. “These will always be the best times of my life and I will never forget them.” Gardner is happy to look back on Barbarella’s run in downtown Orlando, but doesn’t get overly sentimental. He’s clearly ready for the next chapter. “I think that whatever way it goes, I’m OK. I’m happy with my decision. I’ve been in the business for a long time. I have five nightclubs around the United States. So I’m not hurting for money,” concludes Gardner. “I’m 63 now. That’s a long career in the nightclub business and … I love doing what I do. I truly love it. I would miss this greatly. So reopening in another place is something that I’m eager and excited to do.” music@orlandoweekly.com

Multi-instrumentalist Matthew Tonner has been well-known in Orlando music circles for years, though more as part of other acts like the 502s and Laney Jones. More recently, he’s been venturing out solo as simply Tonner, a project that’s definitely distinct from his previous ensemble work. On his own, Tonner’s sound maps moody pop territory that leans more electronic and R&B, a format that spotlights the production and keyboard aspects of his wide musical repertoire. After debuting in 2020 with the eight-song Whispers in the Dark, this solo project is finally back with the fresh release of single “Suspense,” now streaming everywhere. While Tonner returns here with an intimate ballad, it’s only the beginning of a salvo of singles scheduled to drop on the reg for the next several months. Those tracks — all done entirely by Tonner himself save for a sole guest production appearance by Sales’ Jordan Shih — will roll out as an unfurling procession of chill pop gloss stroked with svelte electronic R&B contours. When Tonner first debuted back in 2020, his solo aesthetic felt exploratory. But from my advance peeks so far, expect this followup batch to reveal a marked evolution with deeper, more natural grooves. The culmination of these single releases will be an album that’s planned to be out by September. Orlando trad-country combo the Oak Hill Drifters are keeping their current output high in pace and quality with another song release this Friday. Frontwoman Rachel Decker tells me that jubilant single “Shindig” — which is all about coming together again for a fête — was written when the pandemic appeared to show signs

Having freshly debuted her first solo material outside of the Pauses, Orlando’s Tierney Tough is currently in the beginnings of her own high-profile emergence. Rounding out the bill will be South Florida indie-rock band Sandman Sleeps and local Pressurewave. (8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, Will’s Pub, $12-$15)
