On Feb. 20, we reported that Florida House lawmakers declined to take up a measure that would ban the sale and possession of assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines, while students from the Parkland high school where a gunman killed 17 people watched from the gallery. The bill was filed last October by state Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, D-Orlando, in response to the massacre of 49 people at the gay nightclub Pulse. @Patrick Prainito Republicans did allow a debate as to whether or not pornography is a public health risk. That’s right – no debate about the public health risk of guns just days after a massacre at a high school but let’s debate pornography.

John Morgan connects school shootings to prescription drugs and vaccines: Orlando trial attorney John Morgan, a once-viable contender for governor, took to social media last week to argue that there is some sort of connection between mass shootings and prescription drugs and even vaccines. Pointing out that he didn’t know any kids with autism when he was growing up, Morgan stated in a Facebook post – which has since been deleted, but there’s a screengrab on our website – that we should consider that we’re turning children into “zombies.” He wrote: “Our children are doped up and drugged their whole life. Vaccines galore. Look at all the autism ...”

Eight Orlando-area lawmakers voted down last week’s assault weapon ban: Just days after a teenager used an AR-15 to murder 17 people in Parkland, Republicans in the Florida House stood in front of survivors and turned down a motion to even debate whether or not the state should regulate the sale and possession of semiautomatic rifles and extended magazines. The local lawmakers who voted “nay” are: Bob Cortes, R-Altamonte Springs; Mike La Rosa, R-St. Cloud; Mike Miller, R-Winter Park; Robert “Bobby O” Olszewski, R-Winter Garden; Scott Plakon, R-Longwood; Jason Brodeur, R-Sanford; Rene “Coach P” Plasencia, R-Orlando; and Jennifer Mae Sullivan, R-Mount Dora.

Marco Rubio finally went to a town hall meeting, which is his job, and got roasted: After a year of not facing his constituents at a single town hall meeting over fears of a “hostile atmosphere,” the Florida senator finally did his job and listened to someone other than lobbyists or deep-pocketed campaign donors at last week’s CNN Town Hall in Sunrise. And yes – every jeer, lecture and boo he received was glorious.

Florida House passes measure to post ‘In God We Trust’ in all public schools: Thanks (and no thanks) to state Rep. Kim Daniels, a Democrat, the Florida House passed a bill that would require all public schools to post the state motto in a “conspicuous place.” Daniels said the bill is intended to bring “light” to our public school system following the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Feb. 14. A companion bill has yet to be taken up by the Florida Senate.

The Florida Legislature wants to share your voter information: Last week, the Florida Senate sweepingly approved a bill that would allow the Department of State to start sharing voter information to make sure voters aren’t registered in other states, but only if the effort isn’t controlled by the federal government. Sponsored by state Rep. Ross Spano, a Republican – yes, the same Spano who filed a bill to declare pornography a public health crisis in Florida, only to be caught having “liked” a porn clip on Twitter – the measure would also allow Florida to share driver’s license information. orlandoweekly.com

Festivals at the parks In the spring, a theme park fan’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of festivals, because while only one major new attraction (Universal’s Fast & Furious Supercharged) is scheduled to open before summer, all three Orlando-area resorts are attracting springtime guests with seasonal offerings that keep their turnstiles spinning. The good news is the added entertainment is all included with regular admission, although extras like drinks and eats can quickly add up. To counter recent increases in ticket prices, look online for Florida resident discounts before springing for these vernal events:

APRIL 12-14 Florida Music Festival In the same spirit of events like CMJ and SXSW, the Florida Music Festival is a hyperlocal look at the ever-changing state of the music biz in the City Beautiful, complete with panels and talks by pros like last year’s keynote speaker, Warped Tour’s Kevin Lyman. BY ST EVE SCHN EID ER THIS WEEK: Death Wish The hare-brained idea of remaking the 1974 Charles Bronson revenge fantasy Death Wish has been kicking around Hollywood for too many years. At various times, everyone from Sylvester Stallone to Liam Neeson to Will Smith was either attached to star or on the wish list. When the gunpowder settled, the dubious honor of being the poster boy for civilian violence was nabbed by Bruce Willis, who was MAGA before MAGA was cool (which is to say, “before American political life had sunk to the level of Bruce Willis”). You might be encouraged by the screenwriting credit for Joe Carnahan, who showed such promise as a filmmaker with 2002’s Narc, but he actually left the project some time ago (he was going to direct), and numerous uncredited rewrites have been done in the process. And who landed in the director’s chair? None other than Eli Roth. Yes, the same Eli Roth whose Hostel movies were such profound calls for healing.

But really … now? NOW? I was going to write that advocating armed vigilantism is profoundly distasteful so soon after Parkland, until I realized the odds were strong that at least one more mass shooting would have taken place by the time you read this column. (If I was wrong, whoopee. This is what passes for good news these days.) Either way, I don’t think the reaction is going to be very favorable to a film whose underlying philosophy is “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun, even if he’s using that gun in an illegally proactive manner and the bad guy’s gun might turn out to be a screwdriver.” Then again, I might be misreading the public here, just for the sake of my own sanity. This kaleidoscopic alternative-rap bill was the latest case of the new horizons of Orlando’s Endoxa Booking, and it was a tour finale that landed like an exclamation point. Topping the marquee was the progressive hip-hop mind of Milo. With a cerebral frequency that’s as literate as it is out there, this Midwesterner is the truest quintessence of an indie rapper. With sounds that coast by like abstract jazz zephyrs and raps that lean left and pimp easy, Milo steps like a blazed Digable Planets from the near future. Meanwhile, experimental New Yorker Elucid comes from a space so inspired by dark electronics that he’s just as apt on record to craft wordless drone soundscapes as he is to actually drop bars. On stage, though, his elemental, displacing music and roughneck raps that hit like constant confrontation merge into a storm of smothering nihilism that Dälek would respect. But, by far, the most rousing performance of the night was JPEGMAFIA. The Baltimore product is an exciting rap force who is utterly of the moment, a sniper from out on the edge with the zeitgeist squarely in the crosshairs. With noise scene bona fides and a fiercely forward vision that pursues art with guerrilla tactics, he’s on a next-level tip alongside contemporaries like Death Grips, Shabazz Palaces and Clipping. Thematically, he jabs at culture with a bite that’s provocative, topical and humorous. You might imagine how one

This cat’s deep. To back up all of this, his one-man show packs the live dynamite of Ho99o9. Even at his most minimal, he is pure fire. But when his production hits the gas and meets his flame like it does on “Baby I’m Bleeding” from his 2018 album Veteran, the results are total combustion. On stage (and often on the floor in the thick of the crowd), JPEG is part live wire, part raw nerve, all juggernaut. It’s rap done with punk spit, and it peeled the lid off the spot. Add it all up and you’ve got one of the most stirring hip-hop acts in the game right now. Even with humor as one of his cornerstones, this is some of the toughest shit out there. Instead of being just a footnote, however, the local support was a revelation even

among this studded bill. MC-producer Mag.Lo is a young Deltona artist who came with strong grass-roots support, packing out the room despite being the first performer on the four-act bill of an extra-early show. In attitude and ethos, his new-paradigm voice is as opposite of old-school hip-hop street braggadocio as it gets. But this kid owns it in his own skin and is as smooth as hot butter. And though he’s got enough nerd cred to be interesting – especially in his musical palette – he’s just too transcendental to be boxed in by it. You don’t exactly come from out of nowhere when you have a following like this. But he’s eschewing tradition in both his climb and angle. Though he’s cut his teeth mostly in Daytona and niche area venues like the Geek Easy, he made a very big splash this night on a primetime Orlando stage. If you didn’t know what was going on, you’d have thought he was the national headliner by the reaction of the crowd when he descended onto the floor near the end of his set. Mag. Lo got a posse. And he’s one of the most impressive local finds to come along in some time. A year ago, nobody would’ve thought that one of the freshest impresarios of interesting rap music would be the city’s most established heavy music promoter. Culture Pop: Art31 Kickoff ART

This year’s edition of the Art & History Museums’ Art31 is focused on fiber art, and Friday night’s party is the kickoff to a monthlong celebration of the textile arts. While Friday is the usual Culture Pop fantasmagoria of pop-up installations, music, short films and performance art, the centerpiece is the Art31: Fiber gallery show inside the Maitland Art Center, which features works by internationally recognized artists Alisha McCurdy, Hye Shin and Carrie Sieh. Works made with cloth, string, yarn, thread, fibrous paper and even pine needles will be exhibited and created throughout the month in a series of installations, workshops and performances; on March 14, Nomi Dale Kleinman, professor in Textile Surface Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City gives a talk on Slow Weaving; and a booth at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival March 16-18 (see page 23) will offer kids art activities. Portrayal of Guilt MUSIC

It takes a certain type of pitch-black chutzpah to tackle a song from Christian Death’s epochal 1982 debut Only Theatre of Pain. And yet, Texas hyperviolence quartet Portrayal of Guilt wowed with their muscular take on “Spiritual Cramp,” released as a 7-inch last year. They brought the requisite drama. The rest of their output – a self-titled 7-inch and a split single with Street Sects – is discordant and fucked bleak noisecore with an avant bent, reminiscent of the mighty Today Is the Day. Live, they appear to be a kinetic ball of overcast hatred overlaid with suffocating electronics. Uncomfortable Brunch: Spring Breakers & Riff Raff FILM /MUSIC

Here’s an inspired double feature for you. Sunday afternoon, Uncomfortable Brunch screens Spring Breakers, a breakneck spree of sex, drugs and crime from noted indie squirm-inducer Harmony Korine. Along with former Disney Channel tween stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens playing gun-toting co-eds, the film stars a chameleonic James Franco as a drug dealer named Alien. The cornrowed, grill-sporting Alien drew immediate comparisons to cult rapper Riff Raff since – uh – he looks and sounds exactly like Riff Raff. But Korine and Franco both claim that the character is actually based on St. Pete rapper Dangeruss. Riff Raff himself disagreed, threatening to file a lawsuit and even mocking Franco by playing a character named Jamie Franko on soap opera One Life to Live – a send-up of Franco’s time on General Hospital. I was also shocked that I didn’t know this was a thing! But of course it’s a thing cuz everything is a thing, right? I don’t want to outlaw it, and everyone has a right to their kinks, I guess, but I’m so wigged out! I guess I don’t have a question here besides wondering what you think about it. Ick!
