Readers react to blog posts and stories from the Dec. 12 issue. On Dec. 12, we reported that, despite zealous opposition from communities, businesses and lawmakers along the eastern shoreline, the Trump administration has cleared a path for seismic blasting to search for oil in American waters. In particular, the move stands to hurt the North American right whale, an endangered species that uses sonar to navigate the ocean. There are only 400 to 450 right whales left in the wild. @Eric Russell No! We already had an issue with red tide. Have we not learned from the BP spill? Sick. Absolutely sick. @Sara Hopkins No surprise from the regime that cares only about short-term profits for their donors and nothing about stewardship for the future. @Thatcher Doe Sickening how the human race is killing everything and always finds justification for our destructive, murderous ways.

On Dec. 14, we reported that Florida transportation officials are looking into traffic patterns near a downtown Orlando intersection where trains hit two vehicles in separate crashes that occurred within hours of each other last week. The first crash happened around 12:18 p.m. and neither the driver nor the 49 others aboard were injured. The second crash occurred around 1:30 p.m.; reportedly, no one was injured in that crash either. @Keona Dixon What part of staying off or totally clearing the tracks during traffic do these people not understand? @Ducky Orlando I’d like to propose a state law that punished blocking train tracks with prison time. So if you get hit by a train you also have to go to jail. @Francisco ‘Franco’ Boden That intersection is a death trap now that the I-4 on-ramp is a left turn. The lights are so poorly timed that there are regularly near-grid issues during peak traffic hours.

Ron DeSantis wants to pull some bullshit before restoring rights to Florida felons: Despite nearly 65 percent of Floridians voting for Amendment

4 in November, Republican Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis now says he’s opposed to immediately restoring the right to vote to the 1.5 million former felons who’ve served their time. In an interview with the Palm Beach Post, DeSantis called for a bill with “implementing language” to be sent to him for his signature, effectively delaying rights restoration for months. That’s right – the same elected officials who couldn’t be bothered to fix the issue for years now want a say in the process. Advocates for Amendment 4, though, argue the ballot language was clear and self-executing, and does not require state lawmakers to pass implementing language in order for it to go into effect Jan. 8, 2019.

The future of Orlando’s Artegon Marketplace starts to take shape: Despite ongoing problems with the city over building permits, Miami

developer Michael Dezer’s plans to reopen the former Artegon Marketplace include an auto museum and a Brazilian steakhouse. People will be able to buy any of the 1,500 collectible cars at the location, including the hearse from the original Ghostbusters movie, various James Bond vehicles or a Trump-branded black limo, which was reportedly Trump’s personal vehicle at one time. Dezer Development has been behind quite a few major projects like the Porsche Design Tower, Residences by Armani/Casa and six Trump-branded towers.

Stephanie Murphy slams Trump’s attempt to deport Vietnamese war refugees: U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy slammed the Trump administration’s

reported plan to deport Vietnamese immigrants who arrived in the U.S. before 1995, including Vietnam War refugees. The Atlantic reports the Trump administration is reinterpreting a 2008 agreement between the U.S. and Vietnam that Vietnamese immigrants who arrived before the two formerly warring countries established diplomatic relations on July 12, 1995, would not be subject to deportation. Murphy, the first Vietnamese-American woman to be elected to Congress, is herself a Vietnamese refugee and part of the Vietnamese diaspora that calls Orange County home. “My family fled Communist Vietnam when I was a baby because they would have rather died in search of light than to have lived in darkness,” the Winter Park Democrat said in a statement on Twitter. “I urge [Trump] to be mindful of this proposed policy’s impacts on thousands of families.”

Orange County leads Florida in decline of juvenile arrests: A new

City of Orlando wants to raise parking fines by $5: The Orlando City

report shows Orange County had Florida’s largest drop in juvenile arrests as the state hit a 43-year low. Juvenile arrests in Orange County decreased by 19 percent in the last year, and more than 30 percent over the past two years. Statewide, juvenile arrests dropped by 8 percent. Local law enforcement officials have taken steps in the past three years to knock Orange County down from its former spot leading the state in the number of juveniles charged with a crime. Leaders have pushed for the use of civil citations and diversion programs instead of arrests, as well as Project No/No, an initiative that gives juvenile offenders who haven’t been arrested a second chance with a clean record.

Council approved on first reading a measure to raise certain parking violations by $5. If adopted, the ordinance would increase fines for five violations starting May 1, 2019, including parking over time in limited authorized zones, meter violation, failure or refusal to pay a parking fee, parking over line, and parking a vehicle without a current license plate or validation sticker. City officials estimate the proposal will bring in about $300,000 in extra revenue and provide more funds for public transportation and other mobility options in downtown. orlandoweekly.com

The Trump admin stuffed a whole month’s worth of insanity – or what we would have called a year, pre-2016 – into just 168 hours BY J EFFREY C. BI L L M A N

Is anyone else tired of all the winning?

Even by Trumpian standards, this week has stuffed a month’s worth of insanity into 168 hours. To hit just the highlights: Michael Cohen, the president’s longtime lawyer and fixer, confessed in open court that the President Known as “Individual 1” directed him to break campaign finance laws to make hush money payments to a porn star and Playboy model with whom Trump had allegedly had affairs, and was sentenced to three years in prison. That claim was corroborated by the National Enquirer’s publisher, who admitted to working with the Trump campaign (and, according to NBC News, Trump himself ) to “catch and kill” the salacious stories – an indication that if the president weren’t the president, he would have already been indicted as well. What’s more, federal prosecutors opened an investigation into possible corruption associated with the Trump inauguration, which spent an obscene amount of money, and the special counsel’s office secured a plea deal and cooperation agreement with a Russian agent who infiltrated the NRA to help Trump. Now, just about every organization Trump has helmed over the last decade, from his campaign to his nonprofit to his businesses, is under some investigation or

another. And we’re just getting started: There was Nancy Pelosi taking Trump to school in the Oval Office over the border wall and the potential shutdown; the emerging scandal over the 7-year-old migrant girl who died of dehydration in Border Patrol custody; the embarrassing spectacle of Trump casting about to find someone, anyone, willing to be his chief of staff, and finally settling on a temp who two years ago called him a “terrible human being”; the coming departure of Trump’s scandal-ridden Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke; the Education Department’s failed effort to force thousands of defrauded students to repay $150 million in student loans; the plunging stock market; the New York Times investigation that revealed the administration rolled back fuel economy standards beyond what the automobile industry wanted at the oil industry’s request; and the president’s Sunday Twitter meltdown, including the not-at-all-authoritarian-sounding idea that Saturday Night Live not be allowed to make fun of him. To put a big bow on it, the Washington Post dropped a big piece Sunday night on a new report prepared for senators explaining in unprecedented detail how Russia went about trying to get Donald Trump elected – primarily, by using social media to get conservatives

hot and bothered over guns and immigration and by spreading disinformation to African Americans – and then to prop him up once he was in office. Again: Is anyone else tired of all the winning? Trump did have one victory, if you can call it that, on late Friday night, when a right-wing federal judge struck down the entirety of the Affordable Care Act on grounds that most legal experts find tenuous at best. The basic idea is that the when Congress repealed the penalty that accompanied the individual tax penalty as part of the tax cut package last year, it invalidated the entire law – from the pre-existing conditions coverage guarantee to Medicaid expansion, from the individual marketplaces to the mandated calorie counts at restaurants – even though Congress had declined to repeal the entire law that same year. Legal experts were less than convinced: A prominent conservative scholar told the Post the decision was “embarrassingly bad”; a University of Michigan law professor called it “as naked a piece of judicial activism as I have ever seen.” Trump, however, was here for it: “Wow,” he tweeted, “but not surprisingly, ObamaCare was just ruled UNCONSTITUTIONAL by a highly respected judge in Texas.” (Your mileage may vary.) “Great news for America!” (Same.) The ruling will be appealed and has no immediate effect, other than to put Republicans in a bind: For eight years, they campaigned as if Obamacare was singlehandedly destroying American health care, but then, well, people discovered they liked it, so during this last cycle, Trump and company found themselves promising to maintain the law’s popular advantages, especially regarding pre-existing conditions. If Trump gets his wish and the Supreme Court upholds this judge’s unique interpretation of the Constitution, the Republicans will be the dog that caught the car – suddenly forced to produce the viable “improvement” they’ve been unable to produce for nearly a decade, or else millions of people will lose their health care and thousands will die. (Or, option B, Democrats will win the White House and big majorities in Congress and enact Medicare for All in 2021.) But hey, a win is a win. And for the President Known as Individual 1, after this week from hell, he’ll take whatever he can get.

ast year we ran our first “12 Cats of Christmas” cover story, featuring adoptable cats from the Orange County Animal Shelter, and it was a big hit. This year, we’ve decided to focus on kittens, who have special needs that make shelter more challenging. Orlando resident Lisa Krakosky fosters kittens until they’re ready for adoption through Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. You can follow along with her charges at her Instagram feed, @orlando.kittens. “My husband Jeff and I moved to Florida in July of 2014. We began volunteering as kitty cuddlers at Pet Alliance in November of that same year,” Krakosky says. “One Saturday in April we were working the last shift of the day when a mom and her four kittens were brought in right before closing. The kittens were less than a week old and the shelter manager was looking for someone to foster them so they wouldn’t have to stay in the shelter overnight. Kittens that young do not have a developed immune system and can get sick very quickly.” “I had no experience caring for kittens but I said I would take them. I’ve been fostering kittens (and the occasional dog) for Pet Alliance ever since,” she says. Some people may not realize that some shelters simply euthanize kittens under eight weeks old. Cats that young require the kind of individual nursing (both feeding and vigilance against illness) that most shelters can’t provide. Cathy Rodgers of the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando tells us the shelter developed a “Virtual Kitten Nursery” because more than 1,000 homeless kittens are surrendered to their shelters each year. “A kitten must be at least two months old and 2 pounds before it can be adopted,” Rodgers says. “Most of the surrendered kittens have not hit those milestones and require regular and sometimes round-the-clock care until they can be adopted out. Pet Alliance doesn’t have the staff resources to do this, so we engaged our volunteers to help out. Pet Alliance provides guidance, food and supplies while volunteers provide the love and time to care for the kittens.” Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando is trying to find new families for all of its shelter pets this month as part of the Home for the Holidays promotion. The adoption fee for all dogs and cats six months and older is only $12, through Dec. 24. Anyone interested in becoming a kitten foster volunteer can contact Pet Alliance’s foster coordinator, Susan Russell, at srussell@petallianceorlando.org. Say what you like about Dickens

and Seuss; for my gelt the greatest Yuletide tale of all time was generated not by any goyim, but by my fellow Hebrew Irving Berlin, whose 1940 song “White Christmas” plays on endless repeat at my home during the holidays. So even through the menorahs have been packed away, I felt like I was opening another Hanukkah gift when I recently got to interview Jeremy Benton and Kelly Sheehan, who co-star in the stage version of White Christmas, my favorite seasonal movie musical, ahead of their appearance this week at Orlando’s Dr. Phillips Center, Dec. 18-23. When I spoke with Benton and Sheehan, who play the dance-heavy roles of Phil Davis and Judy Haynes (immortalized on screen by Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen), they were preparing for a two-performance day at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and eagerly anticipating the opportunity to breathe easy in Orlando. “We are a mile high and breathing 50 percent less air,” Benton sighs. Both Sheehan, the daughter of a professional dancer, and Benton, whose maternal grandfather was a singer, began performing at an early age. (“We were fetal dancers,” Benton jokes.) The pair met in 2002 on Broadway’s 42nd Street, working with director-choreographer Randy Skinner, who also helmed this production. Both began with the show over a dozen years ago as understudies, and have been touring their current roles for five seasons. While most members of the audiences watching them on stage may hold strong memories of the original screen version, you may be surprised to learn that these White

Christmas co-stars aren’t among the movie’s lifelong devotees. “I am embarrassed to say I hadn’t actually seen it all the way through,” Sheehan confesses. “It was only about three or four years ago that I saw the movie to its completion, and I thought ‘Oh that’s charming, no wonder people watch it every year.’” Benton thinks Holiday Inn, the 1942 film that first featured White Christmas’ title song, was “the better script as a movie, but White Christmas just tugs at people’s heartstrings.” “Honestly, I enjoy how the stage version is constructed a lot more. It’s just more of a big Broadway musical.” Keeping the iconic onscreen interpretations at arm’s length allowed the actors develop their own takes on the quick-stepping sidekicks, who scheme to pair up their performing partners (played on film by Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney, and on stage by Sean Montgomery and Kerry Conte) by faking an engagement. “These are beloved characters, so the fear and the danger is to start imitating what they did in the movie,” says Benton. “You can’t be listening and reacting as an actor if you’re doing an imitation.” Instead, he says the key to playing “old famous dead people” is to “bring that joy that you felt as a little kid watching [movies] with you on stage.”

Fortunately, Sheehan says that slipping into her character (whom she describes as “a little sneaky, a little funny and a little mischievous”), and indeed the entire era, comes easily: “We were just born maybe in the wrong era. I think we have that internal 1950s clock inside of both of us.” Similarly, Benton says the “devilishly funny characters who happen to love to do ballroom and tap-dance” that they play are basically themselves. “People think we’re acting, but we’re just trying to make each other laugh.” Rest assured that the best-loved songs from the movie’s soundtrack make the transition to stage, including “Sisters,” “Snow” and “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing,” which both Benton and Sheehan call their favorite dance number in the show. But even ardent White Christmas admirers must admit that some scenes – such as the “I’d Rather See a Minstrel Show/Mr. Bones” number – haven’t aged as well. In the stage version, those problematic pieces have been plucked out, replaced with crowd-pleasers from Berlin’s catalog like “I Love a Piano.” As for the screenplay’s mid-century sexual mores, Benton reassures that “all of the things that might make you go ‘ugh’ when you watch an old ’50s movie have been eliminated or edited,” leaving a story where “everyone has equal footing.” But one thing that hasn’t been altered is the story’s old-fashioned romantic core. “There’s really no bad guy in the show, it’s really just miscommunication,” says Sheehan. “It keeps it so sweet and innocent, and of course it ends happily ever after.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Milk District mobile dining site taps into the essence of the Rose City’s food truck parks BY FAIYAZ KARA

e’re a food truck city, there’s no denying it, and thanks to outfits like the Daily City Food Truck Bazaar and Tasty Takeover, we’re a thriving one at that. But that doesn’t mean the scene isn’t prone to idling – even diehard truckies will tell you things have been languishing here for a while. April and Dustin Williams, a couple of Orlandoans who taught high school in Oregon, saw an opportunity, and a need, to continue our city’s food truck (r)evolution by introducing the permanent food truck park to Orlando. Yes, Kissimmee’s World Food Trucks on West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway may have been one of the first in Central Florida, but the parking lot environs aren’t exactly a welcoming sight. Same goes for the now shuttered Winter Park Food Truck Stop. And the food truck park at Disney Springs is, well, Disney Dull. No, Mr. and Mrs. Williams wanted something a little easier on the eyes; an intimate space; a place for folks to linger over firstrate food and first-rate beer; the sort of park they’d visit often in Oregon. Hell, if it’s good enough for Portland, they thought, then why not Orlando? And thus À La Cart was born in the Milk District.

It’s new, but a timid fledgling it’s not. Since opening last month, there’s been no shortage of excitable patrons convening on the smallish square patch of faux grass and taking in the surroundings – essentially five comestible conveyances and an “open-air pavilion” offering covered indoor seating and a bar with 15 rotating taps. There’s no air conditioning (thus the “open-air” designation, I’m assuming), but I won’t depress you with talk of summer heat; rather, I’ll raise your hopes with talk of fine fare. Of the five slots, three are permanently occupied by PokeKai, Steak It Easy and Viny & Kory. A fourth slot is split between SwedeDish and Adao Pastel Gourmet; and the fifth features a daily rotating vendor. If said vendor happens to be the Pass Progressive Cuisine, you’d do well to gorge on a Latin-inspired Spanglish burger ($12) complete with Latin-inspired potato sticks. There’s pimiento cheese, grilled onions and a sweet plantain jam in there as well, and some damn fine fries come with it.

OPENINGS Castle Church Brewing Community – a massive craft brewery, tasting room, beer garden and Lutheran church – has opened on Hoffner Avenue near Goldenrod Road. Castle Church’s profits go to various nonprofits and Lutheran organizations. They also won the Judges Choice Award at the 2018 Orlando Beer Festival … The Open Container Wine Tasting Bar, a wine bar inside a shipping container, has opened in the Orlando International Premium Outlets … Also on I-Drive, the Nantucket Shrimp Shack has opened … In Winter Garden, The French Café, by former Norman’s Orlando executive pastry chef Francois Paille, is in soft opening … Look for Vietnamese restaurant Le House to open in Parramore in the City View building on Church Street … Tre Bambine Modern Italian Bacaro, which will offer a “street food-inspired spin on Italian favorites,” will open in the former Spice steakhouse space on Central Boulevard in late January … Over in the North Quarter, Bitters & Bottles cocktail lounge and the City Pub eatery won’t open before the end of the year as originally planned. The new target date is mid-January.

Superbly fried crispy “tandoori egg rolls” ($7), however, lacked any tandoori flavor and I seriously doubt a tandoor was used to char the mushrooms or spinach filling. But our fried-food cravings were gratified by Adao’s Brazilian-style empanadas – first a pocket filled with chicken and a Brazilian soft cheese called catupiry ($4.30), followed by beef and blue cheese ($3.80) and capped with a sweet dulce de leche with coconut ($3.80). Get three and it’ll cost you $10. More Brazilian eats come in the form of barbecued meats from Steak It Easy, none better than the picanha ($12) – arguably the most Brazilian of cuts – and its wondrous fat cap flavornator. The fries are forgettable, so save $3 and get just the steak. It’s a great value. The antidote to all this heavy fare is PokeKai’s cool, bracing bowl of ahi tuna, ginger, onion and masago ($15). It’s licked in shoyu and invigorated with chili flakes, sesame and Hawaiian sea salt. And then there’s Vinny & Kory’s highly Instagrammable bowl of pho topped with a whole lobster ($30). Worth it? Sure. While you’re at it, go for the Korean chicken wings ($5) glazed in gochujang, barbecue sauce and honey, then chase it down with a Neon Citra White IPA from M.I.A., or any of the 14 other sudsy offerings that suit your fancy. But do chill and tarry a while in the informal beer garden – the Williamses want you to – and if it all puts you in a Portland state of mind, go ahead and put a bird on it.

CLOSINGS Bauern-Stube, the old-timey German restaurant on South Orange Avenue, has closed after more than 30 years in business … Pea Pod Pierogie Company have closed their shop at the Plant Street Market, but you can find their pierogies at Press’d: The Kitchen in Winter Garden as well as at various farmers markets around town.

The women jockeying the stoves at Inay’s Kitchen deliver a brand-new food experience to those of us not versed in Filipino cooking. Thick, hearty stews are brightened up with expert use of vinegar, and pork and chicken skewers are lacquered with sauce and grilled until the sauce becomes candy – add a third flavor layer with a dip in that vinegar again. The city’s second Ethiopian restaurant offers diners another option to get handsy with their food. Of note is an explosive doro wat, a thick crimson stew reddened by the addition of berbere, a potent powdered spice blend and staple of Ethiopian cooking. Tear off pieces of spongy injera and enjoy. Ye beg tibs (a sauté of lamb) and raw beef kitfo heavily essenced with cardamom are two others to pay heed to. There are plenty of options for veg diners. Lengthy delays and cost overruns aside, Bem Bom’s brick-and-mortar operation in Audubon Park has become a true destination. Diners come for the Portuguese, Mexican and Mexiguese fare, particularly succulent and well-spiced chicken piri piri, grilled chouriço, fiery carnitas tacos, center-cut salted cod, and tender carne asada with chimichurri. Turkish steakhouse has a flair for tableside theatrics à la Salt Bae, but there’s no denying the quality cuts and show-stopping preparations, be it a 28-day dry-aged, bone-in ribeye or luscious “chateau filet” for two finished in a butter-pooled hot plate. Steak tartare blended with bone marrow starts things off in a properly beefy manner, though a salad of goat cheese, walnuts and pomegranate-studded vinaigrette is just as gratifying. Venerated restaurant has lost much of its luster over the years, though its menu of classic French cuisine (with dishes that miss the mark more often than not) are still as pricey as ever. TASTE OF CHENGDU

Sichuan specialties keep things appropriately fiery at this comfy West Colonial Drive restaurant, but it’s the skill of chef-owner Xiong “Tiger” Tang, former executive chef of Zen at the Omni Orlando Resort, that has Chinese food enthusiasts abuzz. What to order? Really, anything – but the pan-fried pompano concealed under a heap of triple chili pepper, peanuts and a five-spice sauce, or the spicy whole lobster hacked and reassembled with its carapace adorned in an alluring mix of chilies, peppercorns, garlic and cilantro are both great places to start. 2030 W. Big Time Street Food shares an interior door with Burton’s, one of Thornton Park’s most popular watering holes, but whether you’re buzzed or not, this food is good. The Holy Fried Chicken Sandwich is a sinner’s version of Chick-fil-A’s spicy chicken-on-a-bun, and the Chorizo Montoya burger is edible chef porn: a grilled chorizo patty on top of a regular burger, plus cheese, cubed avocado and fried onions. OPENING THIS WEEK: Aquaman Let’s get this out in the open: Entourage to the contrary, there was never anything regrettable about Aquaman. In fact, he was way cooler when he was a clean-cut ersatz Buster Crabbe who talked to flounder. And he’s way less cool now that he’s a filthy, musclebound caricature of masculinity who is to lonely single women what feature strippers with 56GGG implants are to guys in raincoats. But deep down, you knew that already. (PG-13) Bumblebee How much must it chap Michael Bay’s ass that the first Transformers picture he didn’t direct is the one that’s getting the best reviews in the history of the series? Variety even calls it “quieter, more character-driven” than the previous outings. Come on, guys. Now you’re just trying to piss him off. (PG-13) Holmes and Watson Here’s the kind of thinking that dooms films. Originally, Sacha Baron Cohen was to play Sherlock Holmes, with Will Ferrell as his Doctor Watson, in this comedic take on the classic mystery franchise. Which might have worked pretty well, I think. Then Cohen was out, so Ferrell got bumped up to the part of Holmes himself and John C. Reilly was brought in as Watson. But who cares about appropriate casting as long as you can keep Will Ferrell, right? Then again, filmmaker Etan Cohen did write the great Tropic Thunder, so maybe there’s hope here yet. I just don’t want to hear Watson volunteering to cradle the balls, stroke the shaft, work the pipe and swallow the gravy. I mean, I don’t think I do. (PG-13; opens Tuesday, Dec. 25)

The only thing constant is change for Orlando expatriates Swimm BY JEN CRAY

“T

he human coil is a hell of a lot more in your face in East L.A. than a quiet town in Florida,” Swimm frontman Chris Hess tells me of the culture shock that was moving from the east coast of Florida “into a warehouse sandwiched between a UPS Freight station and a cement factory” in downtown Los Angeles. “The aesthetic was instant,” he continues. “Growing up in a beach town I could pretty much always hear the ocean and see it peeking over the dunes every time you

drive somewhere. … It’s been a wonderfully potent change of perspective. “ The loss of the Atlantic may have altered Hess’ view of the world, but “the buoyant, somewhat ethereal soundscape” of his psych-pop band’s vibe remains. There’s a dreamy, weightless sonic element that surpasses coastal proximity. You’d never guess that Hess, along with bandmate Adam Winn, had been suffering any sort of hardship while writing their debut album, Sentimental Porno. “Adam and I shared a bed for the first six months until another spot opened up,” Hess explains of their

introduction into the warehouse that is affectionately known as “The Cube.” “It has been an ever-evolving hub of creativity and more fun than is healthy,” he says. “There is a fashion designer, model/ producer, a painter, a fashion photographer, two other bands and us living under the roof of the Cube. And everyone is genuine as all hell and looks out for each other.” Living in such tight quarters with so many artists and musicians – as utopian as that might seem – surely must be cause for some creative anxieties. “It’s exciting, first and foremost. Coupled with fear that if you sleep for eight hours you will get passed up by all of them,” Hess admits. The band doesn’t seem to be sleeping very often, though. And art has always played a large role in the aesthetic of Swimm. Hess agrees: “I used to curate art shows in Florida for a couple years before I started playing in a band. All of the bands I’ve looked up to have gone the extra mile to give strong visual elements to the music. We are also surrounded by incredible photographers and painters all the time. are lucky they are so willing to lend their talents to our vision.” This artistic camaraderie was the catalyst for a festival the band put together called Love You Down. Hess explains: “Instead of doing a headline show we wanted to make it more of an event. Something people wouldn’t be able to forget. By transforming a space, much like we did with the Cube shows, and inviting as many of our musician/artist friends to find a way to participate, both years have felt like that. Now for the third year, it will be growing 10 times the size, and [former tourmates] Warpaint will be headlining both nights to celebrate their 15-year anniversary.” But first, Christmas in Florida, with an Orlando date at Will’s Pub on Wednesday. Even more exciting for the band is the fact that Winn, drummer and “partner in crime from the genesis of Swimm,” just had a baby. “It’s insane! It’s wonderful. It’s been an absolutely dizzying

year for emerging new stages. And after following Orlando’s Great Live Venue Derby of 2018, I need a chiropractor to straighten me out from all the zigs, zags and twists. But for now, here’s where all the dust settled:

NEW LIVE VENUE RECAP

Blackstar/Odd Jobs – Comprised of the old Hoops Tavern and an adjoining building, all belonging to the Club Firestone complex, this is the meteor that kickstarted it all when its innovative, fluid vision and remodeled facilities started sending electricity through the scene in late 2017. But then the sister clubs were suddenly sold to become a seemingly more conventional nightclub concept named Club Vision that quickly folded. It’s now back up for sale. The Vanguard – Because of its size, scope and status, this major revamp of the historic Club Firestone building is still the scene’s biggest X factor. Once its renovation toward a House of Blues-style live venue is complete, it could very well stand eye-to-eye with prime concert halls like the Beacham, Plaza Live, HOB and Hard Rock Live. Considering how strangely and unceremoniously the plug was yanked on Blackstar, however, this venture lives under a cloud of uncertainty. But even though it’s behind schedule, construction continues, now with a spring target opening. Iron Cow – Its calendar hasn’t yet made optimum live use of the new facility. Still, it’s a great and accessible space that, in the right promoter’s hands, has been host to some solid concerts this year. Although underutilized as a concert venue, the Milk District’s biggest new room still stands with enormous potential. Soundbar – By immediately succeeding

This year has yielded a landscape of emerging new stages for indie and DIY musicians to flex their wings on the street level, where it counts the most Backbooth in both space and programming, the quick arrival of this remodeled club saved downtown from losing a longtime stage. The Veranda Live – Though somewhat sporadic in activity, this gorgeous outdoor venue is a very welcome addition. Embodying everything that’s great about old downtown Orlando and setting it to live music, this historic courtyard is one of the city’s most picturesque spaces to experience music. When activated, it’s like Thornton Park’s swinging town square. Church of United Ministry – Though tiny and obscure, this Mills 50 hang is an underground sanctuary for the dazzlingly freaky side of queer Orlando, hosting music events that preach the fringe gospel with edge and flair. Grumpy’s Underground Lounge – Still somewhat of an enigma with a very uneven calendar, this new Mills Avenue spot has hinted at promise as a sister venue of sorts to the legendarily strange and crucial Uncle Lou’s, thereby widening the gateway into Oddlando. Stonewall Bar – The longtime gay bar has been making some fresh ripples now that credentialed scene-maker Tommy Mot is officially aboard. With his diverse and

tasteful background (Spacebar, Blackstar, Panic, No One Knows I’m Disco, etc.), he’s bringing new blood in the form of experimental sounds and even live acts into this beautifully outfitted, three-zone club and expanding its inclusive horizon. Great to see new energy coming out of Parramore. Sly Fox – Thanks to established local indie promoter Norsekorea Presents, this downtown dive has made a late and encouraging emergence as an exceptionally fuss-free place to catch bands à la the old Bar-BQ-Bar shows. The Nook – More than a basic bar, this cozy Milk District spot is bringing character to the upward-rising hood with interesting events and some decent music. Whiskey Lou’s – Although anything but new, this beloved, true-blue local institution recently came under new ownership with a management team that includes pioneering Orlando promoter Jim Faherty (Figurehead, Sapphire Supper Club, Dante’s, Bullitt Bar, Veranda Live, etc.). The plan is to keep the famously old-school bar vibe undisturbed. But once some stage activity starts happening, it could turn one of the city’s best dives into a nice addition to the Milk District’s live music sum.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Although there was some early push, nothing ultimately redrew the Orlando live music circuit seismically. But the bright new waves and glimpses of promise have yielded a landscape of greater variety and possibility for indie and DIY musicians to flex their wings on the street level, where it counts the most. In a little-known postscript to a short and bloody career known for outrage and provocation, the Sex Pistols (Sid Vicious edition, at the very height of their infamy) threw a Christmas party and benefit for the children of striking miners in the town of Huddersfield in 1977. So it was that their final U.K. gig was an uncharacteristically sweet affair, with children pogoing along to the Pistols and John Lydon handing out presents. It was a textbook example of how to merge the nihilism of punk with an imperative of treating fellow humans with, um, humanity and warmth. The fourth annual Punk X-Mas follows in that example. Performers with looks that could raise the dead enact a dystopian future where an underground resistance meets at Stonewall to party and dream of a dark revolution. Industrial music and art, drink specials and Tako Cheena dominate this fantasy abandoned junkyard/speakeasy, where only those who join the Cult can enter.
