On Dec. 5, we reported that state Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office had asked the U.S. Supreme Court to turn down an appeal by a magazine that has been blocked from distribution to Florida prison inmates. State attorneys filed a brief urging the Supreme Court to deny consideration of a legal battle with Prison Legal News. A U.S. district judge and the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the state, which argues that advertisements in Prison Legal News pose security risks. @Dana Paulus I don’t see a future for this lawsuit. Change may be on the way for Florida medical marijuana industry, SeaWorld raises employees’ starting pay to $11 an hour, scientists find yet another scary Florida animal and other news you may have missed last week. »

Change on the horizon for medical marijuana industry: The DeSantis administration could bring a sharp turnaround in how state officials approach the highly regulated medical marijuana industry. DeSantis, a Republican, is unwilling to continue some of the court battles now being waged by the outgoing administration, according to Lt. Gov.-elect Jeanette Nuñez. When asked where the DeSantis administration stands on the caps on medical marijuana licenses imposed by the state Legislature and whether the new governor plans to continue the appeals launched by Scott, Nuñez told the News Service of Florida that DeSantis “has said he’s not interested in continuing that fight.”

Scientists discover new species of giant salamander living in Florida: Researchers dubbed the new species a “reticulated siren” (or Siren reticulata), according to a paper published in the biology journal PLOS ONE. David Steen, a wildlife biologist at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and Sean Graham, a vertebrate zoologist at Sul Ross State University of Texas, were the researchers behind the discovery and co-authored the paper. The scientists said they first stumbled across the creature in 2009, though it took five years to gather similar samples. Per their research, the unusual creature can grow up to two feet in length, and is completely aquatic, preferring to live in swamps or mud.

State Sen. Linda Stewart files bill to remove statute of limitations on youth rape prosecutions: Last week, state Sen. Linda Stewart filed legislation that seeks to remove the statute of limitations for prosecution of rape cases involving young victims, which would allow a victim who is younger than 18 years when the offense is committed to pursue prosecution of their attacker at any time in the future, versus being forced to report the alleged crime within the parameters of a legal time frame. “Many young sexual battery victims do not come forward when they are first assaulted” due to fear or shame, says Stewart. “Justice for these children should not be tied to a clock.”

Florida’s concealed-weapon permit process lacked oversight: A report on the state’s concealed-carry permitting process found a lack of oversight by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, but the agency claims it is addressing the issues. The examination of the department’s handling of the permitting program, issued by a state auditor, found the agency needs more controls over employees that review applications for several positions. Issues with the backgroundcheck process were first highlighted over the summer, as Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam was running for governor in the Republican primary against Ron DeSantis.

SeaWorld raises employee starting pay to $11 an hour: Starting Monday, SeaWorld, Aquatica and Discovery Cove employees in Orlando saw their pay bumped to $11 an hour, making the company the latest to ante up, a spokesperson confirmed. SeaWorld joins Disney and Universal in introducing recent pay increases. “We are continually evaluating our pay rates and make adjustments when necessary to remain competitive in the industry,” a statement from SeaWorld says. Asked to comment on the company’s previous minimum wage and whether there will be future adjustments for employees at other pay levels, the spokesperson declined.

Last-minute power grabs and gerrymandering allow the minority to impose its will in direct defiance of the majority’s wishes BY J EFFREY C. BI L L M A N

For the first 22 decades or so of this republic, the rules were simple: If your side lost an election, you conceded defeat, stepped aside and let the other team take over. This peaceful transition of power has been a hallmark of the American system – indeed, of every democracy – a sign that, like it or not, the will of the people, exercised within the confines of the law, was paramount. So it went after George W. Bush defeated Al Gore in 2000, despite the enduring controversy in Florida. And so it was, likewise, that the Obama administration ceded power to Donald Trump, despite Trump’s popular-vote loss and his Russian assistance. The big exception, of course, came in 1860, but we settled that with a war. Such was the state of things until November 2016, when a North Carolina Democrat named Roy Cooper had the gall to defeat Gov. Pat McCrory, a bumbling oaf who walked headfirst into the buzzsaw of HB 2, the so-called bathroom bill. Cooper didn’t win by much – about 10,000 votes – but it was enough to set the Republican legislature on edge. Lawmakers used a special lame-duck session that was ostensibly about hurricane relief to rein in the new governor’s powers, stripping him of his ability to make cabinet appointments without legislative approval, to hire some state workers and to name trustees to the state’s university system, among other things. Republican leaders openly acknowledged the goal was to turn the Democratic governor into little more than a figurehead.

Some of those machinations didn’t survive legal challenges, but the playbook did. And so, after decisive defeats in Michigan and Wisconsin last month, the lameduck Republicans legislatures went to work, seeking to solidify their power regardless of what their voters wanted. In Michigan, Republicans sought to gut minimum wage and paid sick leave laws, to shift oversight of campaign finance rules away from the incoming secretary of state and to allow the legislature to intervene in lawsuits affecting the state, after the attorney general-elect won with a campaign promise not to defend the state’s homophobic adoption law. Wisconsin’s play was even starker: Republicans there want to block the incoming governor from pulling out of a multistate lawsuit challenging the Affordable Care Act; weaken his control over a scandal-ridden economic development agency that he promised to close; undermine the attorney general-elect and give lawmakers the ability to hire a special counsel when they don’t like what the attorney general is doing; lower voter turnout by shrinking early voting; and move the date of a 2020 Supreme Court election so that it doesn’t overlap with the Democratic presidential primary, thus giving the Republican a better chance. Legislatures have long used lame-duck sessions to pass controversial legislation: Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell became law after the 2010 midterms but before Republicans took power; and after the most recent midterms, North Carolina

Republicans, having lost their veto-proof supermajorities, passed a voter ID law. But that’s not what we’re seeing now. These are naked, unabashed power grabs – sore losers subverting the will of the voters and kneecapping the next administration before it can begin. And the people behind them aren’t even trying to hide their intent: Without the power grab, Wisconsin House Speaker Robin Vos told his Republican colleagues, they “are going to have a very liberal governor who is going to enact policies that are in direct contrast to what many of us believe in.” Vos has a point: The voters of his state elected a man whose goals are in direct conflict with those of the Republican legislative majorities and, to a large degree, the people they represent. All three of these states – North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin – are microcosms of a dynamic playing out all over the country, and more so during the Trump era: the rural-urban divide. Since the Obama presidency, Democrats have increasingly built their base around multicultural and educated urban coalitions, while Republicans have been forced to rely on white cultural conservatives in the sticks. This inherently gives Republicans a political advantage, with Democrats packed into fewer legislative and congressional districts. Add to that aggressive gerrymandering, and Republicans have locked in their power, regardless of what a majority of voters want. Indeed, in North Carolina, Democrats won the statewide popular vote for both the House and Senate but will find themselves represented in the minority. The same thing happened in Michigan, where voters passed an initiative to end gerrymandering. In Wisconsin, where Scott Walker lost the governor’s race, he carried 63 of 99 state Assembly districts. This is the tyranny of the minority: Legislatures that derive their power only from geography and gerrymandering are using their majorities to undermine those whose power derives from actual people. (This same dynamic has given Republicans control of the U.S. Senate and enabled Trump to win the presidency.) It’s cynical and shameless, sure, but it’s also a fundamentally racist proposition that the vote of a white man in farm country should be worth more than that of a black or brown woman in the city. If Donald Trump has taught us anything, it’s that the norms underpinning American democracy are fragile. So long as the minority, emboldened by an increasingly homogenous base and petrified of losing power, is willing to impose its will in direct defiance of the majority’s wishes, those underpinnings will only become weaker. This is an existential threat to our system of government, and we damn well better begin treating it as such. The virus is only going to spread.

The hunt for oil beneath the waters along the Atlantic coast may be a reality again. What does that mean for the marine life living there? BY XANDER P ETERS

n late November, despite zealous opposition from communities, businesses and lawmakers along the eastern shoreline, the Trump administration cleared a path for seismic blasting to search for oil in American waters. Five companies have been issued incidental harassment authorizations, or IHAs, from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which allow them to use high-powered air guns to search the Atlantic sea floor for oil in federal waters between Florida’s Space Coast and New Jersey. The permits are valid for one year, and they ban testing in waters up to 56 miles offshore between November and April during calving season for some whale species. Using visual and acoustic observers on ships, seismic surveyors are required to stop work if they spot a whale within a mile. The last time U.S. exploration occurred off the Atlantic coast was between 1976 and 1983, when companies covered more than 2.3 million square miles of ocean in search of oil. The only fruit of the mission,

according to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, was the discovery of natural gas off the Northeast coast. The wells were abandoned soon after. Although that operation came up largely empty-handed, with the industry’s latest technology at its disposal, the controversial decision to move forward with seismic blast exploration has been made. It comes almost two years after the Obama administration nixed the idea, deeming it unsafe for marine life. Because sound can be amplified many times underwater and travel thousands of miles as a result, scientists argue that underwater noise can harm marine life that uses sonar to find food, escape predators, communicate with their young and locate mates. “When these blasts go off, it makes it very, very difficult for marine animals to communicate, as well as just exist,” says Hunter Miller, the Southwest Florida campaign organizer for the nonprofit Oceana. The blasts, he adds, also affect fisheries, which could affect commercial fish populations.

“It’s a total lose/lose for coastal communities up and down the East Coast,” Miller says. According to an estimate by the Department of the Interior, of which the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is part, seismic air gun testing in the Atlantic Ocean could injure as many 138,000 dolphins and whales and disrupt nesting for threatened loggerhead sea turtles, among other issues. Environmentalists are particularly concerned with the future of the North American right whale, a critically endangered species that draws its name from the poachers who once hunted it for lamp oil. Because their hides produced the best type of oil, they were the “right” whale to hunt. According to data from the NOAA, roughly 400 to 450 right whales remain in the wild. Of those, there are just 100 breeding females. Annually, the whales make a 1,000-mile migration from Nova Scotia to as far south as Cape Canaveral, where they give birth in their only known breeding ground. Last year, however, was the first time since scientists began tracking the populations that no right whale calves were born. The seismic blasts, environmentalists say, won’t help. Here’s how it works: Aboard a vessel designed for the task, seismic surveys use air guns to blast the ocean floor with acoustic waves every 10 to 12 seconds as a means of mapping what’s underneath. As many as 48 guns, arranged in a rectangle, blast pulses directly down. Those blasts can be as high as 250 decibels – loud enough to penetrate layers of sand and rock. The sound can, however, be much lower in surrounding areas, and that’s why supporters such as Gail Adams, vice president of communications and external affairs at the International Association of Geophysical Contractors, say it’s a safer alternative to exploratory drilling. “It is a documented fact that there has not been one instance of sound from our activities that’s harmed marine life,” Adams says. “So it is not our opinion. The federal government has said that there is not one documented case of sound emitted by our activities harming marine life.” Adams argues that the opposition isn’t really aimed at seismic testing but rather the entire petroleum industry. “The opposition is really people who are anti-oil and gas, or entities that are anti-oil and gas,” Adams says. While IAGC has waited for the past four years to have its incidental harassment authorization approved, she says, there have been 22 other authorizations, none of which has faced opposition. “The only difference between those surveys and the surveys orlandoweekly.com

that we are doing now is that we are exploring for oil and natural gas resources.” The other authorizations, Adams says, supported searches for renewable energy opportunities. Adams says she and her fellow industry colleagues “care about the environment” and are exploring “in an environmentally safe manner.” To Oceana’s Miller, though, that’s beside the point: It’s the process of seismic air gun blasting that’s harmful to the natural world. Miller points to a June 2017 article in the science journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, which claims seismic surveys cause significant mortality to zooplankton populations. Global marine systems depend on these tiny organisms for nutrition. According to the research, experimental air gun signal exposure decreased zooplankton abundance and caused a two- to threefold increase in dead adult and larval zooplankton. In science-speak, that’s a lot. An overview of the study concludes: “There is a significant and unacknowledged potential for ocean ecosystem function and productivity to be negatively impacted by present seismic technology.” Congress could intervene to stop the testing, as could President Trump, though neither of those options seems likely. Activists are eyeing the courts instead. “We have to review these permits and figure out what the next step is going to be,” says Catherine Wannamaker, senior attorney at the Southern Environmental Law Center. “We always look at these things with an eye toward whether there’s litigation that is necessary. So I think we’re in the phase now of evaluating whether that’s the tool in the toolbox that we need to use to stop this.” Another tool might be something like Amendment 9, which Florida voters passed last month to protect state waters from drilling. But state waters only extend out three nautical miles. Outside that, the feds have control. And, as Miller acknowledges, the U.S. oil and gas industry has considerable sway with the current administration and the Republicans in Congress. Miller describes the situation as one in which the oil and petroleum industry is always waiting for a way in which they’re allowed to exploit the ocean for profit, “regardless of the environmental devastation that may come along with it.” But it’s a game that environmentalists are familiar with, Miller says. “We continually play this game of Whack-a-Mole with offshore drilling, and every single time you see coastal communities having to fight this fight all over again.” feedback@orlandoweekly.com DEC. 12-18, 2018 ● ORLANDO WEEKLY

asual fans and film buffs can instantly recognize the pen of John Waters in the razor-sharp, witty and vile bon mots uttered from the mouth of the impeccable Divine in perverse classics like Pink Flamingos or Female Trouble, but deep-cut Waters obsessives know the increasingly iconic and seasonal line above from his now annual, touring holiday revue, “A Christmas with John Waters.” Yes, the dirty secret is out: John Waters adores the holiday season. For real. It’s not like the director-author-actor-art collector-commentator hasn’t been laying out breadcrumbs and strong hints for years. His 1974 fashioncrimes gem Female Trouble kicks off with a Yuletide bang when Divine’s Dawn Davenport enacts a seasonal revenge on her parents for not getting her the cha-cha heels she asked for by stomping their presents and pushing the Christmas tree over on her mother. In 2018, Female Trouble is

recognized as an edgy-but-seasonal film and given late-night screenings in December at more adventurous art houses. Davenport’s Christmas tree-pinning is up there with Dr. Seuss’ Grinch stuffing Cindy Lou Who’s tree up a chimney in terms of pop culture Christmas skullduggery. Waters himself laid his own love of the season on the line with an essay – “Why I Love Christmas” – that first appeared in a 1985 edition of National Lampoon magazine (“after the magazine was way past its prime,” quipped Waters to Orlando Weekly). It was nothing less than a manifesto, with Waters deadpanning: “If you don’t have a merry little Christmas, you might as well kill yourself.” A perfect mix of sincere and tongue-in-cheek, when the essay was reprinted in the essay collection Crackpot: The Obsessions of John Waters, Waters’ place in the Christmas canon alongside Bing Crosby and Scrooge McDuck was cemented. But it didn’t stop there. In Waters’ hometown of Baltimore, his annual CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

Christmas party is the stuff of legend, with invites being coveted by the famous and infamous alike. And throughout the arts, film and literary (and probably crime, too) worlds, you know you’ve arrived if you get one of Waters’ singular signed Christmas cards. Over the years these one-offs have featured Waters as a heavily tattooed, RiffRaff-ish Santa, a genuine mugshot with Waters looking panicked in a Santa hat, and most famously Steve Buscemi in full Waters drag. Waters compiled a Christmas album – A John Waters Christmas – in 2004, full of choice cuts from his own vast music collection that somehow the Christmas stations just keep overlooking year after year. A John Waters Christmas effortlessly segues the Chipmunks and Tiny Tim into obscure cuts from the likes of Baltimore cult DJ Fat Daddy singing about how he’s the “reindeer boss.” But wait, there’s more: The Vinegar Syndrome film company, inspired by Waters’ paean to the unrecognized greatness of 1980 slasher Christmas Evil, asked him to contribute a commentary track to a deluxe Bluray reissue. Which is just as essential as it sounds. Even your radio dial hasn’t been spared 16

the John Waters Christmas treatment, with NPR recording Waters reading sections from his “Why I …” essay (ending with Waters whispering “What are you going to get me?” sneeringly). And the ever-game Scott Simon visited Waters in 2004, to watch the director and his comrades put up their Christmas decorations. But in a fitting twist, when the big day finally arrives, every year the King of Filth has a quiet traditional dinner, with all the fixings, with his family. Waters’ Christmas tour, spun out of that initial Lampoon essay, is a madcap spiel, a breathless monologue of the obsessions of John Waters on that particular day, viewed through the sparkly red-and-green lens of the Christmas season. The festive quotient is high and the pop culture and sociological references are always thoroughly modern and in the moment. Waters as a showman is hard to top, an unstoppable force of rapid wordplay, genuine humanity and finding glee in the taboo. Waters spoke with Orlando Weekly amid a whirlwind of preparation for “the most wonderful time of the year.” How do you prepare for the Christmas tour? I have to write a huge amount of material so I just throw ideas in my Christmas

cubbyhole all year. This year started a little later because I just finished a book. So I write it, than I do all the different versions of it, then I memorize it and … oh god how am I ever going to memorize all of this? Do tour logistics mean you’re going to have to start prepping for your own Christmas party and holiday cards early? Are you kidding? I’ve been signing cards for months, there are stacks on the table! It’s a big production. And my Christmas party is totally ready, the only thing that’s not settled is the catering … Christmas around here starts in July. It’s Santa’s workshop! Where did the idea for this all come from? There was a book I did called Crackpot with a chapter, “Why I Love Christmas,” that’s where it all started. The first time I did it live was at the Castro Theatre [in San Francisco]. I always thought of myself as belonging on the vaudeville circuit, being the baggy-pants comedian. Showing nudist camp pictures at the end of the night! That’s where I learned how to do all of this! That was my main influence! I used to hook school and sneak in. They would have burlesque and then comedians would come on with the worst, dirty stuff and they’d do 12 shows a day. I wanted to

do the intellectual version of that! I’ve seen the show a few times and I’m always impressed by how there are no pauses or “um”s or “like”s in your monologue. I don’t use notes and I don’t even have my eyeglasses on stage. When you’re at a Broadway play actors don’t take out a crib sheet, they have to learn the lines! People paid good money! How do you keep yourself so open to new interests and obsessions and topics to work into the shows? I get six newspapers delivered every morning. … In my office I have 12 cubbyholes for different projects and I throw different ideas in there. So for the Christmas show, I just get out everything that’s in there and then I ask my staff what Christmas crimes have happened in the cities I’m performing. I’m always trying to find out the worst things that’ve happened – nothing like terrorism, just ludicrous crimes. Or the name of the nearest jail, I always like to drop that in. What do you think of Christmas in Florida? Christmas in Florida is always weird, it’s like Christmas in L.A.! I always like to look at the Scientology Center on Hollywood Boulevard decorated for Christmas. It’s SO scary! Fake snow in Florida looks … I

love how it looks because it’s impossible! It makes it even more ludicrous in a way to have Christmas in hot places. I feel bad for the mall Santas. Sitting in those hot suits in a mall in 90-degree weather. I’m surprised that any children are allowed to sit on an old bear’s lap! With the political climate of the day, I don’t know … What do you want for Christmas this year? I just want books, even though every bookshelf in every place I have is packed! You love giving books as gifts as well – what did you give out last year? I gave everyone that book about Princess Margaret that was so funny … I used to go around saying to people, “What was your child’s first word? Was it da-da? Mine was ‘chandelier’!” What kind of Christmas music do you want to hear this year? I’ve always wondered why all the junkie jazz musicians in history didn’t have Christmas songs. They could have sung about it, but they never did. “Jonesing Around the Christmas Tree!” An album of all junkie jazz Christmas songs. Were you surprised that your story about the Christmas tree falling on your grandma was so relatable? I didn’t realize it until I started doing the tours and so many people came up to me and said that the exact same thing happened in their house! Usually the dog and liquor are involved a lot.

I think it’s exciting when it falls over and everybody screams! I think they should invent a tree that falls over and you push a button and it goes right back up. And people could be pinned under it for the perfect Christmas photo op! Do you ever get weird Christmas decorations in the mail? I get great ones from fans! Definitely different kinds of Christmas balls with Divine. I got one that was a statue of Divine knocking over the Christmas tree with blinking lights and all that. Does it ever seem strange to you that your tours are becoming a Christmas tradition in the way that singers like … I always said I wanted to be Johnny Mathis! I love him! He has a cult audience too. It’s just that his wear Christmas corsages, and mine have shaved heads and Bettie Page bangs! Any last-minute sales pitch you’d like to give for the show? Even if you hate Christmas, I’ll tell you things you can do to get through Christmas. No matter what your opinion is on Christmas – and you almost can’t not have one, because it’s coming right at you! How can you even avoid Christmas? I guess if you don’t leave your leave your room and just sit on your computer closing down governments as a hacker. Actually it might be a good day to hack! star of RuPaul’s Drag Race may be the biggest Orlando-bred talent since Wayne Brady, but Ginger Minj – better known to her Central Floridian friends as actor Josh Eads – hasn’t forgotten where she came from. Straight from being embraced on the red carpet by Hollywood’s A-list, Minj offered Orlando Weekly this exclusive milehigh interview ahead of her homecoming performance of Crossdresser for Christmas at the Parliament House on Saturday, Dec. 15. Orlando Weekly: Weekly Where are you right now? Ginger Minj: I’m writing to you from up in the air! I left home the day after Thanksgiving to start my Christmas tour, but I took five days off for the premiere of Dumplin’,, a movie I did with Jennifer Aniston and Dolly Parton that’s now streaming on Netflix. I’m on my way to the U.K. to do Crossdresser for Christmas now!

What was the origin of your “Ginger Minj” drag persona? Ginger is based on all of the amazing Southern Baptist Church ladies I grew up with. You know the kind: They’ll give you the shirt off their back, but read you to filth for not bringing one of your own in the first place. Traveling the world, I’ve gotten to experience a lot of different types of drag, which always makes me want to try new things! I’ve gone from Church Lady to Cool Mom! How do you feel now about RuPaul’s Drag Race and the show’s fans? I am forever grateful to the platform Drag Race gave me. Not only did

I’ve been so blessed to work constantly since Season 7 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. The gigs keep getting bigger and better! Aside from Dumplin’, I recently voiced one of the main characters in the Netflix animated series Super Drags, as well as several independent films, several albums and constant world tours. My favorite was singing “I Am What I Am” for Harvey Fierstein at the Trailblazer Awards. Truly a life-changing moment.

it launch me into drag superstardom, it helped me mend the pieces of my broken life. Because of the show I’ve been able to reconcile with my father and brothers after 15 years without contact. It has opened the doors for a lot of conversations that needed to happen. I could sit and dwell on the negativity, but what good would that do? The truth is there is a lot more love than hate, so I choose to embrace that. Drag Race fans are INTENSE, and that’s why I love them.

How did you become involved in Super Drags? Super Drags happened super fast for me! I got a phone call saying the creators of a Brazilian superhero cartoon based a character on me and would like me to do the American dub. I never, in my wildest dreams, ever imagined I would be a superhero. I found two days between the debut of my one-woman Divine show and DragCon NYC, flew to L.A., and laid the track. I’m so proud there are heroes that represent us queer kids. What’s the current status of Truly Divine, the show by Logan Donahoo that you performed at Rochester Fringe? Our debut was an amazing experience, almost cathartic, being able to pay tribute and walk in the footsteps of my biggest idol. We are working on some expansions for the show and trying to figure out the next best step. We have a lot of offers on the table, but we want to make sure we pick the one that makes the most sense for this story. What can audiences attending Crossdresser for Christmas expect to see? Me! And everything that entails. Singing, acting, comedy and maybe a few tears! When I’m on stage, I’m an open book. Every show starts the same way and ends up wherever the audience decides I should take it. Where can fans find you next? My next album, Clown Fucker, is due out early next year, and then we hit the road for my third year hosting the World Tour of “Hater’s Roast” with Murray and Peter Presents. On top of that, I’m just anxiously awaiting Season Two of Super Drags and my next big Hollywood experience! I’ve always wanted to be in a Hallmark Christmas movie. Which Orlando-area venues influenced your career? Parliament House, Sleuths, Southern Nights and Pulse gave me my footing for and knowledge of drag. Every chance to get on the stage gave me a chance to be better. That’s why I always try to find the time to go home and perform whenever I can! Do you still consider Orlando home? Orlando will ALWAYS be home for me! CJ and I are always on the road, but any chance to spend a few hours at home is magical. We are theme park junkies. That we alternated bites of the baked wonder with sliced porchetta ($9.99 per pound) took nothing away from the stuffed square of veg heaven. Sandwiches, however, are Stasio’s star attraction. The rolls are baked in house and comprise an ideal crusty-to-doughy ratio. And the fillings! Pork sausage and broccoli rabe ($10) with its subtly bitter notes; or tender ribeye, onions, hot cherry peppers and fresh mozz in the “REAL Steak Sandwich” ($13) – I won’t call it a cheesesteak, but it comprises enough Philly flavors that Gritty would love it. Then there’s the pastry case. I stood in front of it in silence, only half hearing the owner’s daughter go through each of the sweet goods – pasticciotto, chocolate wafer cheesecake, rum truffles, cornetti and – sweet Silvio Berlusconi! – fresh-baked sfogliatelle. The tubular shape of the creamfilled “lobster tails” was reminiscent of … well … let’s just say they made me cackle and snort like a 13-year-old boy. They’re also what lure me back here time and again. Oh sure, a lovely tiramisu ($4.95) will cater to the less puerile, but what can I say? I’ve got a lot of growing up to do, and I don’t mind doing it at Stasio’s.

CLOSINGS The longstanding 7-Eleven near the corner of North Mills Avenue and East Colonial Drive has closed. No word yet as to what will go in its place.

The women jockeying the stoves at Inay’s Kitchen deliver a brand-new food experience to those of us not versed in Filipino cooking. Thick, hearty stews are brightened up with expert use of vinegar, and pork and chicken skewers are lacquered with sauce and grilled until the sauce becomes candy – add a third flavor layer with a dip in that vinegar again. The city’s second Ethiopian restaurant offers diners another option to get handsy with their food. Of note is an explosive doro wat, a thick crimson stew reddened by the addition of berbere, a potent powdered spice blend and staple of Ethiopian cooking. Tear off pieces of spongy injera and enjoy. Ye beg tibs (a sauté of lamb) and raw beef kitfo heavily essenced with cardamom are two others to pay heed to. There are plenty of options for veg diners. BEM BOM ON CORRINE

Lengthy delays and cost overruns aside, Bem Bom’s brick-and-mortar operation in Audubon Park has become a true destination. Diners come for the Portuguese, Mexican and Mexiguese fare, particularly succulent and well-spiced chicken piri piri, grilled chouriço, fiery carnitas tacos, center-cut salted cod, and tender carne asada with chimichurri. Items are being added to the menu with each passing week, so be on the lookout for grilled sardines with cabbage curtido and pastel de bacalhau. Turkish steakhouse has a flair for tableside theatrics à la Salt Bae, but there’s no denying the quality cuts and showstopping preparations, be it a 28-day dryaged, bone-in ribeye or luscious “chateau filet” for two finished in a butter-pooled hot plate. Steak tartare blended with bone marrow starts things off in a properly beefy manner, though a salad of goat cheese, walnuts and pomegranate-studded vinaigrette is just as gratifying. TASTE OF CHENGDU

Sichuan specialties keep things appropriately fiery at this comfy West Colonial Drive restaurant, but it’s the skill of chef-owner Xiong “Tiger” Tang, former executive chef of Zen at the Omni Orlando Resort, that has Chinese food enthusiasts abuzz. What to order? Really, anything – but the pan-fried pompano concealed under a heap of triple chili pepper, peanuts and a five-spice sauce, or the spicy whole lobster hacked and reassembled with its carapace adorned in an alluring mix of chilies, peppercorns, garlic and cilantro are both great places to start. 2030 W. BIG TIME STREET FOOD

Big Time Street Food shares an interior door with Burton’s, one of Thornton Park’s most popular watering holes, but whether you’re buzzed or not, this food is good. Not just good; it’s loud, brash and ultraextra. The Holy Fried Chicken Sandwich is a sinner’s version of Chick-fil-A’s spicy chicken-on-a-bun, and the Chorizo Montoya burger is edible chef porn: a grilled chorizo patty on top of a regular burger, plus cheese, cubed avocado and fried onions. JINYA RAMEN BAR

Decor is minimalist and food comes out fast and piping hot at this Los Angelesbased chain ramen-ya. The signature Jinya Tonkotsu Black ramen, a flavorful pork broth accented by a slick of unctuous fat, is stuffed with nori sheets, tender seared pork belly, a whole seasoned egg, kikurage seaweed and fried garlic – and toothsome noodles, of course. One of the city’s best sushi joints sits in a strip mall in Casselberry – a bit of a surprise, but many culinary gems reside in nondescript locales. Weekly deliveries from Tsukiji Fish Market highlight the grand sashimi moriawase, a chef’s selection of 16 cuts. If you’re lucky, scorpion fish, goatfish and madai will make the list. characters until it eventually drops an emotional anvil on your head. And hovering in the background, just out of sight for most of the film, is El Halconazo, the student massacre of 1971. As Cleo, Yalitza Aparicio is a pleasure to watch, as are the other actors. But the film isn’t focused on performance. Instead, Cuarón is obsessed with visual, historical and metaphorical composition, peppering his canvas with beautiful, almost Felliniesque details. For instance, a simple shot of people descending stairs is embellished by two ducks furiously mating in the foreground. A Christmas trip to a relative’s hacienda is illustrated with multiple mounted taxidermied heads of the family’s dogs. No audience member will soon forget Cleo’s boyfriend’s all-nude martial-arts demonstration featuring a curtain rod as a makeshift staff. And in a scene that fully embraces magical realism, we learn just how difficult it is to close your eyes and balance perfectly still on one leg. (You’re doing it yourself now, aren’t you?) In 2014, I chastised the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for confining Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty to the foreign-language category instead of nominating it for best picture. For the sake of international cinema, cultural diversity and just plain good quality, I implore them to not make the same mistake with Roma.

OPENING WEDNESDAY, DEC. 12: Once Upon a Deadpool Remember when Kurt Cobain bowed to the pressure to release a censored version of In Utero that could be sold at Walmart? Remember his explanation? He said Walmart had been the place where he bought all his KISS albums growing up, and he didn’t want to deny his fans a similar experience. Yes, there’s nothing like a patina of cool cred to cover for a naked sellout. Just like Walmart, 20th Century Fox has been begging for a PG-13 cut of a Deadpool movie since the very beginning. And now Ryan Reynolds et al. have finally caved, re-releasing Deadpool 2 in a neutered version that benefits cancer charities and has new framing material that riffs on The Princess Bride. Well played, guys. Now we can put this entire messy business behind us. Because since you’ve indulged the suits this one time, they’ll never ask again, right? (PG-13)

OPENING FRIDAY, DEC. 14: Mortal Engines In this adaptation of the dystopian steampunk book series, society has been razed by a cataclysm that took just 60 minutes to play out. (SPOILER: It was the last episode of The Haunting of Hill House.) Now, cities like London are roving behemoths that actually travel about from place to place, looking for other communities to do battle with. The movie was produced and co-written by the longdisgraced Peter Jackson, which explains why its ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic are about on par with Trump’s

popularity. But boy, do I now want to see a movie about a postapocalyptic St. Cloud kicking Oviedo’s ass. (PG-13) The Mule Clint Eastwood directed himself as a World War II veteran who becomes a drug smuggler for a Mexican cartel. Based on the award-winning Reader’s Digest article, “I Am Jack’s Dangerously Overstuffed Colon.” (R) Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse The last four movies with Spider-Man in them have all been pretty well-received, yet we still act like it’s a red-letter day every time that happens. I guess Topher Grace is something it takes a long time to recover from. But what’s particularly notable about Spider-Verse is that it’s the first webhead flick in eons that Sony shepherded to good reviews without having Marvel Studios to help them out. And all they had to do was admit they can’t do a damn thing right with the character in live-action. Plus bring in producers Lord and Miller of the great Lego franchise. Oh, and cast John Mulaney as Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. There, that wasn’t so hard, was it? (Note to DC: Patton Oswalt would make a heckuva Bat-Mite. Just sayin’.) (PG)

POSITIVE, MENTAL, ATTITUDE Bad Brains frontman HR brings reggae to DeLand BY SHELTON HULL

s the co-founder of Bad Brains, one of the most influential rock bands of the past 40 years, HR has played every major venue in every major city one can think of, in addition to countless pubs, dive bars and random holes-in-the-wall from one side of this world to the other. He has slowed down a bit as his 63rd birthday approaches, but not entirely. Even during extended breaks, he tries to fit in at least one show a month, and his formal touring schedule is as hectic as it’s ever been. This most current tour has seen him doing 10 shows in almost as many days. But at the moment, HR is back home, on the phone from Philly. It’s his day off, kinda, and he speaks to Orlando Weekly with calm, earnest deliberation. Right now he’s talking about the Southern swing of his current tour, which includes stops in Tampa (Dec. 14), Stuart (Dec. 15), Melbourne (Dec. 16), Miami (Dec. 18) and Jax Beach (Dec. 19). It all begins this Thursday night at Café DaVinci in DeLand. For the past four years, he’s been playing with a band that includes guitarist Ezekiel Zagar, Joshua Freshy on bass and Wesley Rast on drums. “The message is still there,” he says, “but the way the band delivers the music is not as aggressive as it used to be.” Having made his name leading one of the fiercest punk bands the world has ever seen, the last two decades or so have seen HR refining his focus around his first love, reggae, crafting a sound that’s far more mellow and accessible, but in no way less intense. “When I first started out, there were only a few of us, but now there are thousands of us.” He’s speaking specifically of Rastafari, but he could also be talking punk rock or hardcore, which Bad Brains infused with the spirit of Selassie I to create a potent new variant on the DIY ethos. Their influence can be heard in artists ranging from Black Flag to Body Count, Snoop Dogg to Sublime, Matisyahu to Death Grips. Throughout our discussion, HR projects a message of gratitude for life and for his fans, a message that resonates all the more after a difficult last few years. A rare disorder was causing constant, excruciating cluster headaches, and he finally chose an extreme option – brain surgery – to treat it. Such procedures always carry risks, but thankfully he came through just fine.

“I’m doing much better,” he says, “so much better than earlier before, when it was a struggle. God has answered my prayers and made me a stronger man. He’s given me the gift of telling people what’s going on through my music.” Between Bad Brains and his solo work, HR has appeared on at least 25 albums over the years, but he estimates that it could be as many as 40; even he doesn’t know. Many artists have a bunch of pre-show rituals and warm-up exercises, but HR likes using that time to just connect with the fans. “I don’t like to be seen in the audience’s eyes as some kind of mystic person who they can’t see until the show starts,” he says. “I like to get out and mingle with the people and let them know that Rasta is on their side.” Opening for HR on those first four shows will be Dollyrots, a husband-and-wife duo hailing from nearby Land O’Lakes. After years in L.A., they now live in Tampa, so these HR shows amount to a homecoming of sorts. They play as a trio, switching out drummers as the logistics of touring demand, but the core of the group remains bass player/vocalist Kelly Ogden and guitarist Luis Cabezas, childhood sweethearts who met in eighth grade and came together as a band while attending New College of Florida in 2000. They moved to Los Angeles in 2002 and released their debut album on Lookout! Records two years later. All together, they’ve released 11 studio albums; their sixth, Whiplash Splash, was released last year on their own Arrested Youth label. They’ve also released six EPs, including a split 7-inch with Bowling for Soup in 2011 and an EP of Christmas music in 2014, which was their busiest year to date. As one might expect from such adorable punk-rock parents, their music is accessible and sweet, but not cloyingly so. They are, of course, big fans of HR, and the feeling is mutual. “I think Dollyrots are outrageous,” he says, which is really saying something, coming from him. His goals for 2019 are simple, but nothing is simple when it comes to HR. “I just want to enrich myself, and engulf myself in the reggae,” he says. “I want my group to be happy with me, and happy with what’s going on, and for the kids to have even more fun than they did in 2018!” You can bet on that.

Some old-timers who used to hang at Stardust spent most of their free time making crafts. A couple of them would regularly get interrupted to go pick up Grandma. That sounds endearing, but the truth was more fun: Grandma was a strain of weed (so named for what looked like purple hairs around the buds), and that’s where Grandma Party got its name. We now celebrate (note: weed still isn’t legal here) every year in the Stardust parking lot. Atlanta rapper 6lack – who took a hiatus from performing last year to spend time with his young daughter – has returned in a big way. The gifted MC, best known for 2016 platinum single “Prblms,” casually announced on Twitter earlier this year that he had a new album wrapped, and then, in short order, released East Atlanta Love Letter, an ambitious new album complete with guest spots from Future and J. Cole and a touching album cover pic of 6lack with his daughter strapped to him in a baby carrier, while he recorded music in his (actual) kitchen. His sound is narcotized and dreamlike, like modern trip-hop stripped of the yoga studio connotations, and his flow is in turns plaintive, intricate and lost in a dream. East Atlanta Love Letter is an affecting portrait of a young artist growing up and moving on. His shows in Florida last year were packed out and on point. Holiday Matsuri Over in Japan, Christmas gets translated into something of a couples holiday, full of festive cosplay and decoration, but stripped of much of its religious significance, just like we like it. The annual Holiday Matsuri convention takes its cue from this Eastern interpretation and fills the Orlando World Center Marriott with Christmas-themed anime cosplayers, games and decor while retaining convention staples like panels and voice actors. WJRR’s Not So Silent Night It’s time to rock around the Christmas tree again, as the American rock and heavy metal band Halestorm comes to town. The 2013 Grammy Award-winners are currently touring their fourth studio album, Vicious, released in July. Popular for hit tracks such as “Freak Like Me,” “Love Bites … (So Do I)” and “Here’s To Us,” as much as for the band’s nearly non-stop touring schedule. Straight and married but not boring, and heading to my parents’ house for our first family Christmas since my asshole MAGA brother “stumbled over” the Tumblr blog where the wife and I posted about our sexual adventures. (Pics of MMF threesomes and cross-dressing/pegging sessions, plus some dirty “true enough” stories.) My brother has always been an angry screwup, so he leapt on the chance to make me look bad by sending the link to my parents, siblings and even some close family friends. Our Tumblr blog is still up because we aren’t ashamed. Any advice? Totally Uncool Malicious Bastard’s Lame Reveal Your Tumblr blog isn’t going to be up for much longer, TUMBLR, as the company that owns Tumblr – Verizon – is ashamed of your blog and the millions of others like it. Tumblr announced last week that all “adult” content is banned as of Dec. 17. And the definition of “adult content” is pretty broad: “photos, videos, and GIFs of human genitalia, femalepresenting nipples, and any media involving sex acts, including illustrations,” although they will allow genitals and those wicked “female-presenting nipples” in images of classical art. (No contemporary junk or lady nips allowed.) This is not just a blow to people who use Tumblr for porn – and that’s most people who use Tumblr – but also to the sex work community. Sex workers had already been driven off most other online platforms by anti-sex-work crusaders, and now sex workers are being driven off Tumblr as well. Forcing sex workers off the internet won’t end sex work, the stated goal of anti-sexwork crusaders, but it will make sex work more dangerous – which tells us everything we need to know about the motives of anti-sex-work crusaders. While they claim to oppose sex work because it’s dangerous, they push policies that make sex work more dangerous. Sex workers weren’t just advertising online, they were organizing – in addition to honing and making the political argument for decriminalizing sex work, they were screening potential clients and sharing information with each other about dangerous clients. Just like anti-choice/antiabortion crusaders, anti-sex-work crusaders don’t want to “protect” women; they want to punish women for making choices they disapprove of. (As a general rule: If what you’re doing makes people less safe, you don’t get to claim you’re trying to protect anyone – that’s like claiming you only set houses on fire to drive home the importance of smoke alarms.) Anyway, fuck your sex-shaming/smutshaming brother, TUMBLR. As for the rest of your family, you and the wife should slap smiles on your faces and act like you’ve done nothing wrong – because you haven’t 46

done anything wrong. Your asshole brother is the bad guy, and any family members who wish to discuss how offended they were by your Tumblr blog should be directed to speak with your brother, as he’s the one who showed it to them. How can I explain to my sisters that although I am a free sexual woman, I still prefer men as sexual partners? My sisters are both involved with women and they cannot understand how, with all the awful sexual inequality in the world, I can still be primarily attracted to men. Sometimes I even imagine my sexuality as a gay man’s sexuality in a woman’s body, and I try to explain it to them in this way. I’m not a secret right-winger or someone kidding around by asking this question. This is a real issue. Give It To Me Straight P.S. I have a straight male friend who says he’s a lesbian trapped in a man’s body. What do you think of this? People don’t choose to be straight – some poor motherfuckers are born that way – any more than hetero-romantic bisexuals choose to be hetero-romantic bisexuals. You can’t help who you’re attracted to, GITMS, primarily or otherwise, and the contempt of family members can’t change a person’s sexual or romantic orientation. Your sisters should understand that, since they most likely wouldn’t be with women if the contempt of family members had that kind of power. As for describing yourself as a gay man trapped in a woman’s body and your straight male friend describing himself as a lesbian trapped in a man’s body … Unless the two of you are trans – in which case, you could be homos trapped in the wrong bodies – your friend is just another straight guy mortified by the mess straight people (mostly white, mostly men) have made of the world. You’re also mortified by straightness, GITMS, or at least the sexual inequality that often comes bundled with it. But instead of your straight male friend opting out of heterosexuality (which he can’t do) or you framing your attraction to men as a gay thing to get your sisters off your back (which you shouldn’t have to do), your friend should identify as straight (because he is) and you should identify as someone who doesn’t give a shit what her sisters think (because you shouldn’t). If good straight guys and “free sexual women” in opposite-sex relationships don’t identify with heterosexuality and/or heteroromantic orientations, GITMS, all the shitty straight people will conclude that they get to define heterosexuality (which they don’t). I’m a gay man in my mid-20s, and I’m getting more serious with a guy I met a few months ago. I was surprised to eventually learn that “Michael” is in his late 30s, since he easily passes for my age. I’m comfortable

with the age gap, but I’m struggling with how to present this to my parents. Religious and conservative, they were cordial but distant with the last guy I dated (who was my age). I’m afraid the age gap with my new boyfriend will create even more discomfort for them and that Michael will sense it when he comes along to visit for the holidays. I’m considering lying to my parents if Michael’s age comes up. I’ve challenged my parents’ attitudes for many years – but at this point, I’m willing to trade honesty for the chance to be treated even a little bit more like a “normal couple” at Christmas. Is it selfish to ask Michael for permission to lie about his age? I’m nervous to even share my feelings with him, for fear he’ll think I’m embarrassed by him. Awkward Gatherings Expected Given Age Peculiarity Tell one lie to make your relationship seem more acceptable to your parents, and you’ll be tempted to tell them more lies – and I don’t know about you, AGEGAP, but not having to lie to mommy and daddy anymore was one of the reasons I came out of the closet. And if you don’t want them to think there’s anything wrong with their son dating an older man, deceiving your parents about Michael’s age is a terrible first move. That says you think there’s something wrong it – and you won’t just be saying that to your parents, AGEGAP, you’ll be saying it to Michael as well. And let’s say things work out with Michael. The lie you told that first Christmas will only serve to make things more awkward after you finally tell them the truth about your boyfriend’s age. And if your parents are like other mildly or wildly homophobic parents, i.e., if they’re inclined to regard the man who sodomizes their son as a negative influence in his life, they may not believe the lie was your idea. They’ll think this creepily youthful older man – this man who showed up in their home wearing a suit made out of the skins of younger gay men – encouraged their son to lie to them so they wouldn’t object to the relationship in the early stages, when their objections might have had the ability to derail it. Finally, AGEGAP, if your older boyfriend is concerned you may be too immature for him – not all young people are immature and not all immature people are young, but this shit does correlate – telling him you’re still in the lie-to-mommy-and-daddy stage might prompt him to end this relationship.
