¶ Touch me I’m sick More than 23,000 Floridians tested positive for coronavirus in a single day over the weekend. That topped the previous one-day record (set the day before) of 22,783 positive tests. Hospitalizations also hit a new high. The spike in cases came as children in Florida return to school in-person. State leaders have barred local school districts from taking precautions to slow the spread of coronavirus, and the state Department of Education went so far as threatening to strip the districts of funds equivalent to their superintendent and school board salaries. This last move prompted the federal government to get involved, telling local school districts that they would allocate funds directly to them and shaming state leaders for their anti-science positions. Notably absent from our comments section for the first time in a long time were the COVID deniers. @Mark Sokolowski Politicize the response to a global pandemic — great idea! ¶ Florida man arrested for threatening to bomb Walt Disney World executives A 31-year-old man from Seminole, Florida was arrested last week for threatening to blow up the homes of Walt Disney World executives. According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Steven Jordan created a Twitter account on Aug. 8 and used it to make threats against several companies. Before the account was suspended by Twitter, Jordan sent more than 130 tweets to corporations including Disney and video game maker Activision. He tagged Disney’s official account and said “we will blow up all of your execs houses with C4.” Jordan further threatened to “toss a hand grenade threw [sic] their loft window.” Jordan admitted to authoring the tweets when questioned by authorities. He is currently being held at a Pinellas County Jail and facing a charge of threatening to throw, place or discharge a destructive device. PCSO detectives noted in their news release that Jordan was previously charged with a similar crime in 2019 for falsely reporting a bomb. — Alex Galbraith

Lake County commissioners call for removal of surveillance cameras that they never approved BY ALEX GA LBRAITH

he trend in recent years has been toward unending surveillance. Phones, smart microphones, cameras in doorbells and the ever-present traffic cams have brought just about every corner of modern life under the eye of someone, with any pushback on it seen as crank behavior. In such a grim landscape, even a minor bit of resistance to private companies putting up cameras can feel like a win. That’s what happened in Lake County last week when commissioners reacted with outrage to a series of traffic cameras put up without their permission. The county ordered Flock Safety to remove the cameras that recorded license plate and vehicle details. The cameras were installed as part of a pilot program with the county sheriff’s office, but the commission was never consulted. “It’s shocking they even put them in places where they never would’ve been approved in the first place had they gotten the appropriate approval,” said Commissioner Josh Blacke. Flock called the episode a “miscommunication” and vowed to remove the cameras quickly. “Flock Safety contracted directly with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and we worked with their team to select locations. Cameras were installed a few weeks ago. Not all locations require permits, and there was an honest miscommunication about the need for permits at some of these sites,” they told WKMG. “Since we learned of this mistake, we are starting to remove all the

cameras immediately. We have installed thousands of cameras around the country, including all over Florida, and our team moves very quickly.” LCSO terminated the program following the commission’s decision. Reporting by Orlando Weekly in 2019 showed the extent to which surveillance has penetrated everyday life in Central Florida. Purchased for $1 billion by Amazon (reportedly as a way to save money on stolen deliveries), Ring doorbell and outdoor security devices let people remotely see, hear and talk to whoever is at their door. The company also has an app called Neighbors, in which users post videos and report things they see and hear in their neighborhood. Ring is now joining forces with law enforcement, allowing officers to talk directly to Neighbors users and ask for footage. Since at least mid-2018, Ring has teamed with law enforcement all over the country to encourage residents to purchase and use Ring and Neighbors. Civil liberties advocates worry the streaming cameras and chatroom app might turn citizens into informants, and that police access to large swatches of video could lead to trampling of privacy rights. The Neighbors app is similar to NextDoor and Google Play’s Citizen in that users have been found to often rely on racial stereotypes in determining suspicion. A Florida mom was fatally shot by her toddler while taking part in a Zoom call last Wednesday. According to the Altamonte Springs Police Department, 21-year-old Shamaya Lynn was on a conference call when her child found the loaded weapon. Co-workers called police after hearing the gunshot and seeing Lynn fall out of frame. When police arrived at Lynn’s home, they found her with a gunshot wound to the head and were unable to revive her. “Investigators determined that the injury was caused by a toddler who found a loaded handgun, which was left unsecured by an adult in the apartment,” said ASPD officer Rob Ruiz in a news release. The gun belonged to the toddler’s father, according to a report from WKMG. The local authorities have not determined if the gun owner should face any charges. — AG

¶ Orange County government suspends youth sports as coronavirus positivity rate tops 20 percent Orange County is suspending all county-run youth sports leagues effective immediately. Mayor Jerry Demings announced the move during a regular briefing last Thursday, noting that the COVID-19 positivity rate in the county was above 20 percent. The previous benchmark for removing mask mandates and social distancing guidelines in the county was 5 percent. While vaccination numbers have been climbing in Orange County, the children who take part in many county-run youth sports are not eligible for vaccination. “Due to the spike in the COVID cases and the fact that our residents ages 11 and under are not eligible for a vaccine, all countyrun youth sports leagues, including games and practices, are suspended until further notice,” Demings said. — AG

¶ Orlando Museum of Art is (just temporarily) closed Orlando Museum of Art has temporarily shut its doors for more than a month for an extended summer break. “We will be closed … in preparation for our exciting new exhibition installations and gallery renovations,” read a recent communiqué from the museum. According to OMA’s website, they will reopen with a new slate of exhibits — including Cathedrals of Florida, a photographic collection from Clyde Butcher; and Luces y Sombras, a survey of works of photography from Mexico from the 1930 to the present — on Friday, Sept. 24. — Matthew Moyer

et the squabbling begin. Last Thursday’s delayed release of 2020 census data kicked off the oncea-decade redistricting process, setting the stage for Florida lawmakers to begin configuring congressional and legislative districts in advance of next year’s elections. But politics will play as big a role as population when the Republican-controlled Legislature starts drawing maps that could help the GOP maintain a stranglehold on the state House and Senate as well as Florida’s congressional delegation for at least 10 more years. It’s the second time lawmakers will craft new districts following passage of the Fair Districts constitutional amendments by Florida voters in 2010. The amendments were designed to prohibit partisan gerrymandering or maps that favor incumbent elected officials. The constitutional amendments resulted in legal battles over proposed maps following the last census, with lawmakers ultimately forced to redraw congressional and state Senate districts. But the Sunshine State has undergone significant shifts on numerous fronts since those maps were finalized. In addition to changes in demographics, the Florida Supreme Court has become more conservative. Two justices who dissented in decisions that overturned the Legislature’s proposed districts during the last go-around are now in the court’s majority, with one of them — Charles Canady — holding the chief justice’s gavel.

READY TO RUMBLE

Now it’s up to Republican lawmakers overseeing the work to determine how far they believe the courts will let them go in

crafting new lines that will include an extra congressional district. In advance of the census data release, a coalition of groups held a webinar last Wednesday to discuss efforts to ensure that the once-a-decade reapportionment remains a “transparent process” that follows the Fair Districts guidelines. As a lesson learned from the process a decade ago, Senate President Wilton Simpson, R-Trilby, and House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, separately advised lawmakers last week to refrain from discussing map proposals, particularly with people who hope to gain from the changes. “The House continues to strongly recommend that planned or unplanned conversations about redistricting not take place outside of the committee process with individuals who have a vested interest in the outcomes of the redistricting process,” Sprowls wrote in a memo. The House and Senate plan to have a joint website to provide detailed information to the public. Also, input will be gathered during committee meetings held in advance of the 2022 legislative session. Lawmakers are expected to approve final maps during the session, which will start in January. A decade ago, 26 public hearings were held throughout the state during the summer leading up to the districts being redrawn. But lawmakers had more time in 2011, because COVID-19 delayed the 2020 census count. “Although the census bureau’s delay in releasing the redistricting data is unique to this cycle, we are still well within our constitutionally mandated time frame of redrawing district maps — during the 2022 regular session,” House Redistricting Chairman Tom Leek, R-Ormond Beach,

NOT BACKING DOWN

As the highly transmissible Delta variant of the coronavirus continues to ravage the state, a battle continues to rage over whether children should have to wear masks during the new school year. The wrangling is playing out at county school board meetings, in courthouses and on national news as Gov. Ron DeSantis and state Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran double down on their efforts to prevent school districts from requiring students to wear masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Corcoran has turned a spotlight on two school districts — Alachua and Broward — that he contends are violating a new Department of Health rule that says parents must be allowed to opt out of mask requirements for children. The two districts are requiring doctors’ notes for children to opt out of wearing masks. “The emergency rule does not require parents to submit medical documentation from a physician or a nurse practitioner in order to opt out, and any such requirement is inconsistent with the emergency rule,” Corcoran wrote to Alachua County school officials. orlandoweekly.com

He sent a similar letter to Leon County school officials, who were going to require doctors’ notes but dropped the idea after receiving the commissioner’s message. DeSantis and Corcoran contend a new law, dubbed the “Parents’ Bill of Rights,” gives families the power to make certain education and health decisions for their children. Last Friday, the State Board of Education published a notice of an emergency meeting next week to look at whether Alachua and Broward officials have complied. “Failure to faithfully follow the Parents’ Bill of Rights and the Department of Health’s emergency rule endangers the safety and educational opportunities of students in these districts and has the potential to cause learning loss for students,” the notice of Tuesday’s meeting said. Meanwhile, attorneys for a dozen parents from Miami-Dade, Orange, Palm Beach, Alachua, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties were making their own safety argument in a lawsuit filed in Leon County. Humanity has a very short window in which to unfuck the future BY J E F F R E Y B I L L M A N

The 3,949-page report the Intergov-

ernmental Panel on Climate Change released on Aug. 9 leaves little room for optimism: Things are bad. They’re going to get worse. They might get catastrophic. (And in case there’s still a question, the report says the problem is “unequivocally caused by human activities.”) “Each of the last four decades has been successively warmer than any decade that preceded it since 1850,” the IPCC’s working group reports. “It is virtually certain that hot extremes (including heat waves) have become more frequent and more intense across most land regions since the 1950s.” The global surface temperature during the first two decades of the 21st century is about 1 degree Celsius warmer than it was from 1850–1900. To cap warming at 1.5 degrees, the world can only release 10 years’ worth of global carbon dioxide emissions. In other words, the planet — the U.S., Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, India, North Korea, everyone — has to sharply reduce carbon emissions starting, like, now and go carbon-neutral within 15, maybe 20 years. Given that few countries are hitting their Paris emissions targets, it’s much more likely that the Earth crosses the 1.5-degree threshold in the 2030s or ’40s. If — big if — the world gets its act together quickly, we might be able to contain it there. Otherwise, things go sideways fast. At about 2 degrees — a near-certainty, absent dramatic action — the permafrost thaws, Arctic sea ice melts, sea rise engulfs the coasts, and

deadly heat waves, severe droughts and intense hurricanes become common. The hotter it gets, the worse it gets. The bottom line: Humanity has a very short window in which to unfuck the future. That means moving to a renewable energy grid, shifting agriculture away from animal farming to reduce methane and nitrous oxide emissions, scrubbing carbon from the atmosphere by planting huge forests and investing in carbon-capturing machines, and revolutionizing urban design through green infrastructure — more bike lanes, fewer highways, fewer cars, no parking lots, lots of green roofs, no more sprawl. This is clear as a bell. We know what we have to do. We have the technology to do it. We know what’s at stake: cities wiped from the map, agriculture destroyed by drought, worldwide depressions, disruptive mass migrations, a planet in geopolitical turmoil, and millions of lives lost to starvation, cyclones, heat, floods and disease. If ever there was an issue that should unite America — unite the world — this is it. Acknowledging this crisis is real — we’re all there, right? — means acknowledging that we have a collective action problem. Market incentives are misaligned with a decadeslong human project that requires huge investment up front with the largest shareholder benefit being a livable planet 50 years from now. In other words, none of this happens without government intervention on a scale we’ve not seen since the New Deal. Coal mines and oil refineries will close. Gasoline will

be outrageously expensive. Massive single-family homes will give way to urban living spaces in dense, energy-efficient cities with electrified transit. Companies and factory farms that release carbon dioxide and methane will face new taxes. The government will subsidize solar-panel, wind-turbine and electric-vehicle production, and perhaps plant-based protein (or lab-grown meat) companies, too. This won’t seem fair to those whose livelihoods are uprooted. It will be incredibly disruptive. Of course, the alternative will be much more disruptive. All we have to do to get that is nothing. Looking at Congress right now, which outcome do you think is more likely? Nineteen Republicans signed on to the bipartisan infrastructure deal, albeit after hacking out most of its climate-related spending. (Florida’s U.S. senators, Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, voted against.) Attention now turns to the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill, which is likely to contain hundreds of billions of dollars for various climate projects and needs only 51 votes to clear the Senate. If it passes, it will be the largest investment in fighting climate change in the country’s history and “put America on a path to meet President Biden’s climate change goals of 80% clean electricity and 50% economy-wide carbon emissions reductions by 2030,” Senate Democrats say. At the same time, it’s not nearly enough, not compared with the scope of the problem. Yet the Democrats’ moderate camp is already squirming. To be fair, $3.5 trillion is a big number; for Dems in swing districts, it will be a tough vote. Herein lies the rub. The more serious we are about addressing climate change like a crisis, the more politically difficult it becomes to achieve. It’s not that the policies themselves lack popular support. It’s that our form of government is an anti-democratic anachronism that affords outsize power to white, rural, conservative states and regions — including those that benefit from fossil fuel production: Texas, Wyoming, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, North Dakota, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado. Were representation not warped by the Electoral College, the Senate, gerrymandering and natural geographic preferences — Democrats tend to cram into cities — Republicans probably wouldn’t use “Green New Deal” as an epithet. If the reconciliation package is pared down, climate provisions will make a convenient target. Universal pre-K, free community college, and expanded Medicare benefits are easy to understand and make for good politics. “Rebates for weatherization” sounds like government woo-woo, on the other hand, and “provides environmental justice” will morph into “woke solar panels” by next year’s campaign ads. Climate change is the challenge of this century, and the clock is ticking. Addressing it will require investments that won’t pay off for decades — perhaps in our lifetimes. Inaction is tantamount to a crime against humanity. Nibbling around the edges won’t cut it. But without taking steps to fix our failing democracy — eliminating the Electoral College, ending the filibuster, banning gerrymandering — nibbling around the edges is probably the best we can hope for.

After all the recent drama

involving Mad Cow Theatre and CFEA [see last week’s LAC] it was a refreshing change to cover a major local cultural organization that’s not only made it through the pandemic, but has done so while demonstrating their commitment to diversity and inclusion within one of the most tradition-bound arts. I recently caught up with Opera Orlando general director Gabriel Preisser before the first installment of the company’s Summer Concert Series, which kicks off a “Viva Verdi” season that will (hopefully) culminate in their debut inside their long-awaited Dr. Phillips Center home. Like so many performing arts groups, Opera Orlando had to “pivot the crap out of things” in response to the pandemic, says Preisser. “We all learned about the video side of the industry a lot more than we ever anticipated, but that was exciting; it was fun to figure those things out.” A recording of their December production drew online viewers from Japan, Europe, and “Duluth, Minnesota, of all places,” and their live performances of Carmen sold out the socially distanced Walt Disney Theater and attracted international critical attention. “We had a reviewer from the United Kingdom pick up our productions last season. We got our first review from Opera News,” Preisser says. “We were one of the only companies to stay open … so there wasn’t as much going on nationwide, but it made it all worth it that we put the COVID policies in place [and] found a safe way to put on our productions.” The recent surge in the Delta variant prompted Opera Orlando to again postpone their annual gala from September until May 2022, but this month’s Summer Concert Series launched on Sunday as

scheduled at the University Club of Winter Park with a fully masked audience and take-home reception snacks. Each of the three concerts (which continue on Aug. 22 and 29) features an artist who will return later this season on the mainstage, performing a personally curated repertoire in an intimate setting. Last Saturday I had the pleasure of interviewing Cecilia Violetta Lopez on the eve of her first Opera Orlando appearance since her acclaimed 2017 turn in La Bohème. Although the celebrated soprano has soared to singing classical roles with the Metropolitan Opera, she says the song she selected for her summer concert that’s closest to her heart is Ignacio Fernández Esperón’s “La Borrachita,” which her mother taught her while they worked in the beet fields of her native Idaho. “It’s always a reminder of who I am, and the people that have sacrificed and work so much to help me be where I am,” Lopez says. “As a professional opera singer, it was just weird to be singing it for a paying audience, so of course when I was learning it I had to call mom [and say] ‘you will never guess what song I’m singing for money,’” Lopez says, laughing. “Those songs that I grew up singing out in the fields, those are the songs that my mom knew that my grandmother taught her; they’re the songs passed down through generations.” That connection to her rural roots, despite her international career, extends to her serving as artistic advisor to Opera Idaho, where she’s helping bring her art form to underfunded schools. And though she says she’s never, thankfully, personally faced discrimination in casting as a Mexican-American, she’s supportive of her colleagues who are “rocking the boat” for better representation: “Rome was never built in a day, so we can’t expect changes to

be done immediately, but the changes that I have seen are good.” Inclusive outreach is an intentional thread running through many of Opera Orlando’s recent efforts, such as their yearold “Representation Matters” online series, their Haiti-set staging of Carmen and their upcoming newly commissioned opera of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ book The Secret River, which focuses on a Black family in Florida. “We’re definitely trying to do our part to tell everyone’s story,” says Preisser, “and we strongly believe that representation does matter.” If you missed Lopez’s summer concert, she’ll return as her middle namesake (“Violetta” was a karmically appropriate misprint on her birth certificate) in October’s La Traviata at the Walt Disney Theater. And you’ve still got a chance to catch the last two Sunday concerts with her co-star, Broadway tenor Victor Ryan Robertson, and husband-and-wife duo Kristen and Keith Chambers, who will be back in March for a unique site-specific immersive version of King for a Day at Universal Orlando’s Loews Portofino Bay Hotel. All this is prelude to April’s scheduled premiere of Rigoletto in the eagerly anticipated Steinmetz Hall, whose acoustics will finally allow audiences to enjoy unamplified operas as God and Verdi intended, capping a remarkable period of growth for Opera Orlando. “I know opera’s kind of had a difficult history in Orlando, but I hope we’ve proven ourselves, going from a $250,000 annual budget to $1.5 million over five years, expanding from two productions to five to six productions a year, and even surviving COVID,” concludes Preisser. “Opera is here to stay, and we’re excited to be a part of this community.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

The 808 in Thornton Park adds Hawaiian tastes to the downtown neighborhood BY FAIYAZ KARA

he scene along East Washington Street in Thornton Park really has changed since the days Dexter’s drew see-and-be-seensters to its bastion of upscale-casualdom. Other restaurants — Midnight Blue and La Fontanella di Nino come to mind — moved into the burgeoning grub street, all with a similar aesthetic, all distant memories. That’s just how it goes. I’m not waxing nostalgic or anything — to be honest, I never held Dexter’s in the same sentimental regard as others — but the restaurant, situated in a building that was Orlando’s first Publix, was an indelible part of the city’s culinary history. Nevertheless, this is not your grandfather’s Thornton Park. Not anymore. It’s a whole lot younger, and if the restaurants lining the cobblestoned street are any indication, a whole lot more laid back. Ball caps and T-shirts are the norm at Graffiti Junktion, Island Time, Mason Jar Provisions and Cavo’s, and their menus aren’t too different. Wings, burgers, sandwiches and handhelds appear to hit the sweet spot for the neighborhood’s residents (and the financial sweet spot for restaurateurs). So don’t come looking for eggplant napoleons or bacon-wrapped meatloaf

or any other vestigial remnants from the Dexter’s days. In fact, the Dexter’s space is now the 808, a casual Hawaiian-inspired bar-eatery by Todd Ulmer (Stardust Lounge, Aku Aku Tiki Bar) and Wendy Connor (The Abbey), so if it’s poke you crave, pop in for a bowl ($15). We took a seat outside on the front patio one lovely evening and dug into a bowl with tobiko-crowned spicy tuna. Not bad. Not my favorite, either (I’m preferential to Island Fin, Poke Hana and Da Kine Poke), though I liked it that a charred red onion graced the bowl alongside a wakame salad, crushed macadamia nuts, edamame and avocado slices drizzled in sambal aioli. I would’ve hoped for a charred Maui onion but, hey, any kind of onion is good in my book. What really gave sway to the hula dance in our mouths were the kalua pork sliders ($11). Unfortunately, there’s no pig being cooked by lava rocks in a pit out back (those darned city ordinances), yet the juicy shreds served on a trio of King’s Hawaiian rolls piled high with bracing pineapple salsa and a five-spice barbecue sauce “broke da mouth” just the same. That’s how tasty

dishes are described in the Aloha State, and chef Daniel Weber applies that “broke da mouth” label to his chicken sandwich ($11) — his sweet chicken sandwich. No, no peppery fire in this one, but the slather of huli-huli sauce on that crispy chicken lent it a nice teriyaki-like kick. By now you’re probably wondering about Hawaiian steak, aka Spam®. Well, of course they serve it here — in rice bowls, on top of burgers, in plated lunch meals. It comes seared and glazed atop an ingot of compressed rice in the nori-wrapped musubi ($6 for two). Now that’s my kinda protein bar, though the double cheeseburger ($11) is a perfectly fine whopper too. The 808’s bill of fare doesn’t aim unnecessarily high, nor does it get mired in pretense and frill. The same can be said for a cocktail menu that consciously targets the fruity and refreshing notes patrons would expect of a Hawaiian joint — the Waikiki sunrise ($9) with Tito’s, guava nectar and passion fruit liqueur being a prime example. Inside, the restaurant plays up the relaxed Hawaiian motif with surf boards and an impressive photo mural of Kauai on the wall behind the bar. Oh, in addition to being a part of the restaurant’s address, “808” also happens to be the area code of Honolulu, and the 808 celebrated its grand opening on 8/08 (Aug. 8) with hula dancers, the mayor and all. So if you’re wondering whether or not the 808 will have the same lasting power as its predecessor, let me say this: Brah, just chill, have a drink, and don’t worry about it. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

The first Nick Filet outside the Philly/ Jersey Shore area graces Orlando, and it’s all about the pricey filet mignon sandwiches. The latest offering from Jason and Sue Chin is arguably their prettiest and their most accessible. The Creative Village restaurant presents modern comfort fare courtesy of chef Josh Oakley, who garnered a following after opening the Smiling Bison. Fried chicken, pastrami corn dogs and chicken waffles are all worth ordering, but the must-try dishes are jerk-spiced chicken hearts and duck served with sour cherry-scallion relish spooned over Murasaki sweet potatoes. “The perfect cheesecake” lives up to the hype. There’s also the “Brooklyn Shepherd,” a salad of cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, parsley, feta, grape leaves and unpitted Manzanilla olives. Bay Area punks Destroy Boys bring a new noise to the Sad Summer Fest BY IDA V. ESKAMANI

t’s a goddamn sad summer indeed, and Destroy Boys are headed to the City Beautiful to soundtrack it. These Bay Area punks are opening up the Sad Summer Fest package tour in amphitheaters and outdoor spaces around the country, headlined by pop-punk stalwarts All Time Low and also featuring the Story So Far, the Maine, Movements and Grayscale. We here at Orlando Weekly urge you to be sad safely — bring your mask and get vaccinated. Destroy Boys is a project rooted in the unyielding friendship of singer Alexia Roditis and guitarist Violet Mayugba that began in 2015. While watching ducks in a pond somewhere in San Francisco, Mayugba shared with us the band’s origin story over the phone. “I was 15 and they were about to turn 16,” remembers Mayugba. “I was really f’d up … I didn’t like anybody so I didn’t like Alexia at first but they were so persistent and so kind and sweet that I immediately just couldn’t resist.” Roditis’ resolve may have spurred the friendship, but it was Mayugba’s determination that inspired the band. “They had never listened to punk, and that was all I listened to. So I’m like ‘Oh my god, I gotta show you all these bands!’” Mayugba recalls. Mayugba proceeded to share seminal punk tracks with Roditis, the strongest foundation a friendship can find. Green Day, Operation Ivy, Rancid, Misfits and Black Flag were exchanged. Roditis was hooked, and the two decided to start a band. When Roditis brought forward what would be the first Destroy Boys track, epically titled “I Think I Should Makeout With Other People,” Mayugba saw magic. “It was so good,” says Mayugba. “I just looked at them like, ‘You’re the key … You’re gonna start the best band ever, you’re gonna sing.’ And they [Roditis] were like, ‘I don’t wanna sing!’ and I’m like ‘You have to!’”

It’s this ability to see and bring out the best in each other that serves as the foundation for the members of Destroy Boys. Bringing drummer Narsai Malik into the mix, combined with Roditis’ haunting melodies and Mayugba’s killer shredding, Destroy Boys are steadily on the rise, earning them loyal fans and high critical praise. As a femme-led band in a male-dominated scene, they’ve faced plenty of preconceived notions and assumptions. “We get judged more instantly than any other band would,” Mayugba says. “I don’t see that judgement coming to a four-piece white-guy punk band. … We have to prove ourselves one hundred times more often than any band in that category would. It’s hard but also, we did it, we proved ourselves.” The band hasn’t slowed down a bit, even in the face of a never-ending global pandemic. Their album Open Mouth, Open Heart is set for release on Oct. 8 through Hopeless Records. Their just-released single, “Locker Room Bully,” is a gloriously defiant banger that only heightens anticipation for the upcoming full-length. Roditis sings with a seething ferocity in between whirlwind breakdowns: “I hate biting my tongue when I know what’s right/And I don’t like being mean, but I won’t run from a fight.” With Sad Summer Fest ahead, a new record, and soon their first-ever headlining tour, Destroy Boys are equal parts humble and hungry. “The most important value to me is to always stay very humble because I’m very familiar with the concept that

everything can disappear in a moment,” says Mayugba. “Everything we’re doing right now was my dream from two years ago. And now it’s not enough. LOCAL RELEASES

Although not a music group per se, the Jonesy Collective recently debuted their first music compilation. The Orlando organization is actually a nonprofit that was formed to honor Alex Hwang Jones, an influential figure in the local electronic scene who, tragically, became a victim of gun violence last summer. Founded by his mother with the help of his many friends, the collective is aiming to keep Jones’ memory and spirit alive by using the arts to “promote positive change and inspiration.” Most tangibly, that means mobilizing to raise funds to support other organizations and causes that they believe in. Among the young group’s many ambitious and varied plans is a music label, and Jonesy Collective Compilation Vol. 1 is its first release. The four-song EP features emerging Florida artists like Fowl Play, Rest in Pierce, Mystic Grizzly and Sunken Frequencies alongside like-minded collaborators like Chicago’s Relativity Lounge and Denver’s Pheel. Befitting the Jonesy Collective’s support of organizations like the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, the abstract electronic music on the EP tends toward the psychotropic side of the spectrum, blending glitch and beat minimalism to mood-altering effect. The comp’s now available on Bandcamp and all proceeds go to another worthy non-profit: global reforestation organization One Tree Planted. Volume 2 of the Jonesy Collective compilation series is still in early planning, but founding chair Mimi Hwang tells me that they’re looking

Can’t respect everyone else’s safety? Stay the fuck home. The Tremolords and the Chotchkies: This one-two punch of garage-minded Orlando rock bands is worth more than the price of admission alone. But the fact that it’s a chance to enjoy live music at the Veranda Live again makes it an even bigger deal. When this famously scenic downtown courtyard venue began doing concerts in 2018, it had the stuff to become Thornton Park’s musical town square — except for the sustained programming, that is. Well, this long-quiet jewel will rock again for at least one night to benefit the Thornton Park District Neighborhood Association. Is it ever OK to stop being GGG? I’ve been with my husband for 26 years. Shortly after we got together, my husband disclosed a major kink: MFM threesomes. I was young and a virgin and up for anything then, but we didn’t start hooking up with other men until around year six of our relationship. Over the last 20 years we’ve been on-andoff with this. We had children, we took a break, and we found the time to go wild now and then. My husband’s interests expanded into dominance play — owning me and sharing me — but I’m in my late 40s now and my husband is in his 50s. I’m approaching menopause and my sex drive has decreased. There were also instances where I was basically sexually assaulted — or at the very least, my boundaries were not respected on more than one occasion. Long story short, I want to be done being kinky. I want my body to be mine. My husband and I have been having other marital problems, and he thinks my rejection of his kinkiness is a rejection of him. I’ve told him I’m still interested in sex, I’m just tired of being GGG. He says he isn’t interested in vanilla sex with me because he is “disappointed.” When I told him to outsource his kink, he said, “Good luck finding that as a married man.” Am I ever allowed to retire from his kink? Am I the asshole here? My Years Being Obedient Done First and most importantly, if your husband stood by and did nothing while your boundaries were violated in front of him — or if he violated your boundaries himself — then there’s an asshole in this marriage, MYBOD, and it ain’t you. But seeing as you’re still with your husband and still interested in having vanilla sex with him, I’m gonna assume your husband recognized how he failed you on those occasions when you were violated and that he’s shown remorse, apologized specifically and profusely, and made whatever changes he needed to make for you to feel safe with him. If he’s done none of those

things — if he hasn’t done all of those things — you should leave him. Zooming out for new readers: GGG stands for “good, giving, game.” As in, “good in bed, giving of pleasure, and game for anything — within reason.” I believe we should be GGG for our partners and that our partners should be GGG for us. Being GGG, however, does not mean doing whatever your partner wants. That’s why the final G has always come with that qualifier: “game for anything — within reason.” Being game means recognizing your partner will have sexual interests that you don’t share and being up for giving those things a try — so long as they’re reasonable. “Reasonable” is a subjective standard, of course, and we all get to decide for ourselves what may or may not be reasonable. Back to you, MYBOD. A kink for MMF threesomes is not a thing for feet or light spanking. It’s a big ask. And if your husband knew he needed MMF threesomes to feel sexually fulfilled, sharing that when he did — early in the relationship — was the right thing for him to do. He laid his kink cards on the table before you got married, before you had kids, and when you could easily walk away. You didn’t walk away. You told him you were open to the idea — you told him you were one of those rare “up for anything” virgins — and he didn’t rush you into anything. Six years went by before you had your first threesome. And while MMF threesomes probably aren’t something you would’ve sought out on your own, MYBOD, I’m hoping you enjoyed some of them — you know, the ones that didn’t involve boundary violations so egregious that you experienced them not as sexual adventures you were having with your husband, but as sexual assaults your husband participated in and Jesus Fucking Christ on the Cross. In all honesty, MYBOD, I’m having a hard time getting past those boundary violations. But seeing as you got past them — seeing as you’re still interested in being with your husband — I’m going to continue to assume he somehow made things right and advise you accordingly. If he didn’t make things right, disregard my advice and divorce the motherfucker already. All right, you asked me if you can stop being GGG, MYBOD, and my answer is no. I think you should continue being GGG. That doesn’t mean you have to continue having MMF threesomes with your husband. You can decide you’re done with that — you can take them off the menu permanently — while still being GGG in other ways. You’re also allowed to be done with Dom/sub play. (Your husband never owned you and

your body was never his to share. That was naughty dirty talk you indulged in, not a deed of sale you have to honor.) And doing what you’re doing — giving your partner permission to get a specific sexual need met elsewhere — is one way a person can be GGG. There’s this need, this kink of his, that’s important to him — so important he brought up early on — and you met that need for a long time but can’t meet it anymore. But you’re good enough, giving enough, and game enough to give him your blessing to get his kink on with other people. So you haven’t stopped being GGG. You’re being GGG in a different way now. And just as you’re not obligated to have kinky sex with your husband, MYBOD, your husband is not obligated to have vanilla sex with you. If you think he’s withholding sex right now because he’s disappointed, well, maybe you can see how it might be disappointing and give him a little time to get over it. But if, on the other hand, you think he’s withholding sex to manipulate you into having threesomes again, MYBOD, that’s a deeply shitty thing to do and you should leave him. P.S. Please show this to your husband, MYBOD: Dude. GET OVER YOUR DISAPPOINTMENT ALREADY. You had a good run. I hope you’re grateful and I hope you found some way to make up for boundary violations. Assuming you did: The sooner you stop fucking sulking and start fucking looking, the sooner you’ll find couples seeking male thirds.
