¶ Don’t be afraid of a little prick It’s been yet another week of insanity as our governor refuses to make any moves to safeguard his constituents’ health, to the point that the president of these here You-nited States called him out: “If you’re not going to help, at least get out of the way of people trying to do the right thing.” Gov. Nero’s response? To claim Biden has “imported more virus from around the world by having a wide-open southern border.” OK, crazy. @Tiffany Taylor It’s one thing not to pass mandates but it’s entirely another level to actively pass legislation that ties businesses’, counties’ and municipalities’ hands to institute mitigation protocols. @Lara Zee DeSantis’ own statement shows he’s more interested in economic recovery than health recovery: “We’ll have businesses open, tourists back, we’re not going backward. … Would rather have 5,000 young people infected than 500 more vulnerable elderly.” @Tony Patercsak Whose side is he on? ¶ Masks just get in the way when you’re yelling ‘fire’ Regarding Jeffrey Billman’s commentary on July 21 about misinformation regarding COVID-19 on social media, I must strongly disagree. The old saying that “freedom of speech does not mean that it’s all right to yell ‘fire’ in a crowded theater” applies to this

situation. Persons who refuse immunization because of misinformation, and then, even unknowingly, transmit COVID-19 to others, are responsible for the continuation of the pandemic and possibly the serious illness or death of our elders, young children, and other vulnerable citizens. We cannot allow them to continue falsely screaming “fire” in our theaters. Freedom of speech does not mean it is fine to say things which lead to illness and death, even if indirectly. As a physician, I have seen some sad outcomes because otherwise sensible people believe untrue things they read on social media or the internet in general, especially during this pandemic. The only “slippery slope” here is the one that will lead to endemic COVID-19. — Katherine Welty, Winter Garden

¶ Please keep your nasty pandemic out of my leisure pursuits The article I stumbled upon while looking for new restaurants to potentially try, began with a very partisan, anti-conservative paragraph, very unbecoming of an entertainment article and your media company. This was the statement: “Let’s put 2020 where it belongs — in a slop-filled dumpster strewn with red baseball caps coated in fryer grease and set ablaze by a flamethrower-brandishing Anthony Fauci. …” Most of us have had enough with the partisan political rhetoric being thrown at us by professional sports organizations and other entertainment companies. Enough. I will likely not partake in any information you continue to put out into the community going forward. I do hope you take this into consideration and just stay in your lane in the future. Orlando musicians remember legendary local musician and scene mainstay Jim O’Rourke BY MATTHEW MOY ER

rlando musician and scene fixture Jim O’Rourke passed away last week, leaving friends, fans and loved ones in the local music community and beyond shocked and saddened. “In terms of music, it doesn’t get any more Orlando than Jim. He was already an esteemed veteran when I was but a freshman on the scene,” said Orlando Weekly music columnist Bao Le-Huu. “He kept on creating over the decades, right up until the end. He was always there. And now the Orlando music family has a big, indelible hole in its soul.” Going back to the 1970s — as part of a young, loud and snotty punk project dubbed the Mess — Jim O’Rourke

was seemingly never far from an Orlando stage. Whether playing solo, with groups like Rainy Day or hosting his now-legendary open mics at the Peacock Room and Bodhisattva Social Club, O’Rourke was constantly treading the boards and performing at dives large and small all over the City Beautiful. “Jim O’Rourke was the first person to play live music at Will’s,” remembered Will’s Pub owner Will Walker. “He was integral in pushing me into adding music.” After the Mess migrated northward for a few years to try their luck, O’Rourke returned home to Orlando in the late 1980s. It was then he started the first of his open-mic affairs at Yab Yum, at the same time performing solo and with a succession of bands like the Shrubs, the Mercy Chain, the Shut-Ins, the Quiet Ones, the Rugs and the Filthy Little Lies. (Are we missing some? We bet we probably are.) One man who had been faithfully watching — and documenting — O’Rourke performances through the decades was local photographer and Orlando Weekly contributor Jim Leatherman. Though Leatherman was still reeling from the news this week, he did his best to sum up the outsize influence O’Rourke had on him and the local music scene. “He was a staple, and maybe kind of a father figure of the Orlando music scene. A tireless supporter of others art and music too. One of the good guys, for sure. I was friends with him for over 27 years. A great songwriter and storyteller,” recalled Leatherman. “I saw him so many times over the years, in every venue imaginable — house parties, restaurants, bowling alleys, little bars, smoky clubs to theater-size stages. The open mic nights that he hosted at the Peacock Room, those were extra special. He had a gift for taking a cover song and truly putting his unique style to it, making it his own. I am really going to miss my friend.” O’Rourke’s bandmate in latter-day psychedelia quartet Rainy Day — “lots of garage, a little psych and some bright power-pop hooks in there, but it’s all rock & roll, babe,” said Le-Huu of the beat combo back in 2019 — and comic artist Dave Mitchell shared memories about his good friend and musical mentor. “Being in a band with Jim was everything you’d grown up imagining it would be like. Egos in check, all for one and one for all. He hated Rainy Day being referred to as ‘Jim O’Rourke and …’ even when it would have pulled more people to a gig. He was (and I still have problems with Jim and the past tense) so far beyond me musically in every sense, but all four of us were equal partners,” recalled Mitchell. “He always encouraged me to write some material, despite my having no leaning towards that at all. I was happy getting to do the occasional lead vocal. Getting to be bandmates with him the last halfdecade plus was a blessing and a gift I can only repay by trying to be as decent a man as Jim was.” If you want to delve into O’Rourke’s considerable body of work, there is a wealth of work up on his Reverbnation page. Some YouTube digging can also turn up more than a few inspired performances. And a May 31, 2001, Orlando Weekly feature by Billy Manes does a wonderful job of capturing O’Rourke in full flight. ¶ Republican attack ad blames Florida Rep. Stephanie Murphy for rise in cost of chicken wings, everything else You wouldn’t think a single U.S. House rep from a midsized Florida community could single-handedly create conditions where your dollar is worth less than ever before. And you’d be right. That’s a stupid thing to think. But not being able to think the really stupid thoughts is what’s keeping people like us from getting the big GOP consulting bucks. A new ad blames Rep. Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park for everything from the decline of American manufacturing to the increased cost of chicken. The ad from Republican House leadership-affiliated PAC Congressional Leadership Fund attacks Murphy’s support of emergency funding to aid millions of Americans and their businesses during the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic. Murphy was a vocal opponent of the Donald Trump administration who pushed to have him removed from office. She has also attempted to bar QAnon believers from having security clearance. These acts obviously singled her out for attack among an increasingly deranged and conspiratorial Republican Party. The attack ad accusing Murphy of raising the overall cost of things is coming well ahead of Murphy’s potential re-election in 2022. Because you need space to reach that far. — Alex Galbraith

¶ Parliament House seeks return of rainbow monk statue for new downtown location Parliament House is dead, long live Parliament House. The iconic LGBTQ resort will never open on Orange Blossom Trail again, but a slimmed-down nightclub version of the storied venue is coming to downtown Orlando. For the sake of continuity, the owners of the club are hoping to bring some fondly remembered touches to their new home in the old CityArts building. The problem? They allowed a bit of a free-for-all on art and fixtures in the waning days of the original resort. In the chaos, someone slipped away with a piece they wanted to keep: a rainbow monk that stood at the courtyard entrance. Now the owners are offering immunity to whoever walked off with their colorful, silent doorman. Parliament House shared the following offer on Instagram: “We’ve seen video of the Monk in a very well-manicured lawn. And although he’s enjoying his vacation, we would very much like to have him back for our reopening downtown,” they wrote. “No questions asked whatsoever! We just want our friend back. ¶ Joe Biden robot debuts at Disney’s Hall of Presidents The expectations surrounding a Hall of Presidents animatronic have been permanently lowered, thanks to Donald Trump’s bizarro Hillary Clinton look-alike bot. Still, Disney adults were excited when the new commander-in-chief took center stage. Joe Biden’s likeness appeared at Walt Disney World’s Hall of Presidents on Aug. 4. The audio of Biden taking the oath of office was recorded by Biden at the White House just for this attraction, according to a Disney spokesman. The BidenBot looks quite a bit more like the current commander-in-chief than the aforementioned Trump nightmare. There’s also an exhibit of Joe-specific artifacts on hand, like a pair of aviator sunglasses. We were hoping chocolate-chip ice cream would be featured in the exhibition, but it probably melts faster than wax. — Maria Briceno

NEW NE WS GOVERNOR WHO? Ron-Ron hears a ‘who?’ as President Biden loses patience with DeSantis’ dangerous grandstanding BY DARA KA M, N SF

ov. Ron DeSantis and President Joe Biden exchanged barbs last week over the Republican governor’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic as the highly transmissible Delta variant of the coronavirus rips through Florida. Florida and Texas share the dubious distinction of leading the nation in hospitalizations and new COVID-19 cases, prompting Biden to scold DeSantis, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and other state leaders over pandemic policies. Biden’s criticism came after DeSantis issued an executive order last week banning school districts from requiring students to wear masks and threatening to withhold funding to schools that defy him. “If you’re not going to help, at least get out of the way of people trying to do the right thing,” Biden said. The president’s advice unleashed a tirade by DeSantis, who spent about five minutes of an appearance in Panama City dressing down the Democrat. “Joe Biden suggests that if you don’t do lockdown policies then you should quote ‘get out the way,’” the governor, who is emerging as a frontrunner in the 2024 GOP presidential primary lineup, said. “But let me tell you this, if you’re coming after the rights of parents in Florida, I’m standing in your way. I’m not gonna let you get away with it.” When asked about DeSantis’ comments last Thursday, Biden delivered another jab. “Governor who?” Biden said, breaking into a grin. “That’s my response.” The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released guidance recommending that children wear masks indoors when the school year resumes and that vaccinated people wear face coverings

indoors in areas with high COVID-19 infection rates. Democrats are amping up attacks on DeSantis and his management of the pandemic as health care providers, hospital administrators and local officials wrangle with the skyrocketing number of COVID-19 cases in Florida. The Democratic attacks also have come as DeSantis crisscrosses the country building a hefty war chest for his re-election bid next year. “He is flouting science. He is giving the middle finger to science,” U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz told reporters during a video conference call. “If he doesn’t want to impose a statewide mask mandate, which he should … then he should get out of the damn way and stop jeopardizing people’s lives.”

Debate over whether school districts should be allowed to require children to wear masks took a new twist last week, as the State Board of Education signed off on a new regulation that will allow students to use taxpayer-backed vouchers to transfer to private schools if they object to wearing masks in classrooms. The Board of Education approved an emergency rule that will allow students who experience what the Department of Education has labeled “COVID-19 harassment” to receive vouchers through the state’s Hope Scholarship program. That program was originally intended to provide vouchers to students who were bullied. Under the rule, “COVID-19 harassment” is defined as “any threatening, discriminatory, insulting, or dehumanizing verbal, written or physical conduct an individual student suffers in relation to, or as a result of,

The lawsuit argues, in part, that by “refusing to allow school districts to implement mask mandates, Governor DeSantis has placed an illegal barrier for students with disabilities which is preventing our state’s most vulnerable students from returning to public schools.” Filed in the federal Southern District of Florida by Miami attorney Matthew Dietz, the lawsuit alleges that the governor’s order violates the Americans with Disabilities Act and two other federal laws.

scary things to say, but you know the longterm solution of habitat restoration, that’s seagrass restoration, doesn’t happen overnight,” Commissioner Mike Sole, a former secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, said. “So, I call it a five- to 10-year process. … We really can’t start planting grasses until water quality is reasonably squared away in certain parts.” Kate MacFall, state director of the Humane Society of the United States, said the commission could use the manatee situation as an opportunity to improve state waters. “We urge you to work with the (Department of Environmental Protection), the water management districts, the legislators — I know you already do, but even more — and others to find ways to improve the quality of water, of what is discharged into our waterways,” MacFall said. “You have a loud voice, and this agency carries a lot of weight and a lot of authority and people listen.” Florida waters have between 7,520 and 10,280 of the threatened species, which commission Chairman Rodney Barreto called a success story as manatees were reclassified in 2017 as no longer considered endangered. But the number of deaths this year has already surpassed the prior oneyear record of 830 in 2013.

With more than 840 manatee deaths reported in the state this year, members of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission expressed a need for patience after receiving an outline of efforts to combat a significant decline in water quality, particularly along the state’s East Coast. ADAPT OR DIE Floridians are getting sick and dying because Ron DeSantis won’t adapt his message to the circumstances of reality BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N

On paper, George McClellan was as

good a commander as the U.S. had available in 1861. But he was reluctant to attack despite his numerical and tactical advantages. So in November 1862, President Lincoln removed Little Mac as commander of the Army of the Potomac. Thus began the procession of Lincoln’s failed generals — Ambrose Burnside, the sideburn’s namesake; Joe Hooker, whose proclivities might have popularized the slang term for sex workers; George Meade — before the president landed on the unlikely Ulysses S. Grant, who put down the Confederates within a year. Lincoln was willing to be wrong. That’s what good leaders do. They learn from mistakes. They adapt to new information or changing circumstances. They don’t dig their heels in. Now, as then, politics doesn’t readily reward such flexibility. Lincoln paid a price for firing one high-profile general after another while the war effort stagnated. Until weeks before the 1864 election, he was certain he would lose — to George McClellan himself, now Lincoln’s presidential challenger. Changing course is perceived as indecision, and indecision as weakness. When political ambitions are built upon impervious hubris, even the hint of weakness can be fatal.

And so it is that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, having spent a year sowing the wind, is in denial about the whirlwind his state is reaping. By aggressively disregarding scientific expertise in order to curry favor with Donald Trump’s base, DeSantis has paved a path to the White House that allows no room for deviation, no matter how many bodies lie between him and the Oval. The numbers don’t lie. Florida by far leads the nation in new COVID cases and deaths. Its ICUs are packed. Its hospitals are facing critical staffing shortages. And less than half its population — and less than a third of those under 45 — are vaccinated. DeSantis, however, has declared the pandemic over, whether the pandemic agrees or not. His re-election campaign sells “Don’t Fauci My Florida” koozies. He argues that mask mandates and capacity limits are a form of leftist control. In his words, “We can either have a free society or we can have a biomedical security state.” (Biomedical security state is a new one.) He hasn’t merely refused to react to his state’s renewed COVID crisis. He restricted anyone else from doing anything, either: He forbade local governments from issuing their own COVID regulations. He (probably unconstitutionally) banned private companies from requiring customers to be vaccinated. He threatened to cut off funding for school districts that required masks. When several

did so anyway, he made students who felt “COVID bullied” eligible for private school vouchers. This is DeSantis’ schtick: He is a champion of freedom. Freedom is worth the risk. Also, the COVID outbreak isn’t his fault. This spring, his strategy appeared to be paying off. DeSantis blustered while Florida’s urban areas imposed mask mandates and other COVID restrictions, keeping the state’s caseloads in line with the rest of the country. In May, with vaccinations bringing the pandemic under control, DeSantis signed an executive order blocking local governments from enacting COVID rules and took a victory lap. Then came the Delta variant. On Saturday, Florida posted a record of nearly 24,000 new cases. ICUs all over the state were filling up. The situation has changed. But instead of adapting, DeSantis looked for scapegoats: “media hysteria,” was one; also Joe Biden, for not securing the Southern border, because immigrants crossing the Rio Grande are somehow to blame for the outbreak in Duval County. And Florida children will soon return to classrooms with the Delta variant running rampant, no local restrictions, no universal mask mandates, no vaccine available to anyone under 12, and evidence hinting that Delta may put kids at greater risk of illness. Faced with similar (though less severe) circumstances, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he regretted signing a bill overriding local mask mandates. DeSantis has no such regrets, or if he does, he won’t voice them. Unlike Hutchinson, he’s got his eye on the 2024 presidential nomination, already looking past his assumed gubernatorial re-election next year. (History suggests he’s not wrong: The hapless Florida Democrats will spend a bazillion dollars against him and lose.) DeSantis matters not just because Florida is the country’s COVID epicenter, but also because he’s the odds-on favorite to be the Republican standard-bearer in three years. And if it’s not him, chances are it will be someone in a similar vein. Open disdain for public health officials has taken root among conservative populists — c.f., Rand Paul; Ted Cruz — alongside unbending rigidity in the face of new evidence. Circumstances are always in flux. Not just with COVID — which, as viruses do, will continue to mutate. But with the activities of foreign actors, friendly and otherwise. With the science behind the climate crisis. With any number of problems that deserve more than demagoguery. Amid perpetual evolution, good leadership requires a willingness to learn and adapt, even if course corrections are subtle and mistakes aren’t broadcast. (Political realities are what they are.) But those who insist on plowing ahead, hoping bravado will suffice until fortune returns or tragedy subsides, well … On Friday, Florida reported a record 134,506 new COVID cases over the previous seven days. It has nearly 14,000 people — adults and children — hospitalized with COVID. About 90 of its residents are dying every day, comprising a fifth of the country’s COVID deaths. Once again, artists turn to social media and allege a local theater hasn’t paid them. Mad Cow Theatre says it’s a stampede to judgment. ager Blue Estrella posted on Facebook voicing her frustration with Mad Cow Theatre over her delayed paycheck for their production of Hound of the Baskervilles, joining an illustrious fraternity of local artists who claim they’ve been ignored or intimidated when asking for their contracted compensation from one of the region’s most acclaimed companies. Mad Cow’s July 12 statement regarding the matter dismissed Estrella’s post as a “trial by social media” caused by a “payroll timing error,” and board chair Kathy Godfrey told Orlando Weekly this week via email that “the employee notified us at 10:45 p.m. that she thought her payment was late. The issue was fixed the following morning. We sincerely regret the delay.” Godfrey blamed the delay on banks receiving funds on different schedules, asserting that “everyone is current, and we are pleased that our staff was retained during the pandemic.” According to executive director Mitzi Maxwell, “All contracts at the theatre going forward will explain deposit timing and what to expect.” However, the resulting backlash brought forth a renewed wave of calls for Maxwell’s resignation, and reminders that similar promises have been made in the past. If all this sounds tiresomely familiar, you’re probably having flashbacks to our reporting from five years ago, when director Aradhana Tiwari sparked a similar firestorm (“Mad Cow Theatre is coming under fire after local artists allege they haven’t been paid,” Oct. 12, 2016). This latest conflagration probably would have burned out like the previous ones, if not

for the involvement of Central Florida Entertainment Advocacy. Formed during the height of 2020’s racial justice protests, CFEA recently held a hard-hitting online forum discussing the progress (or lack thereof ) toward local equity in the arts by self-proclaimed allies over the past year, and the organization is following up by making Mad Cow the focus of their first community action campaign. Citing “profound community concern regarding the safety of Mad Cow Theatre for artists who are involved in productions, both on stage and behind the scenes,” CFEA’s open list of initiatives include an external investigation of the company’s practices within 30 days; a plan for adding new, diverse board members within 60 days; and replacement of the executive director, along with recruitment of a Black or POC artistic director or co-director, within 90 days. Maxwell told the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Palm that the initiatives were “a bit of a shock” and that she was open to meeting with CFEA, but Godfrey wrote, “We invited them to talk with us, for the second time. Communication is important.” That prompted a strong response from CFEA founder and lead organizer Meka King. In a conversation last Friday she told me that “CFEA stands firmly by the initiatives we presented to Mad Cow Theatre. They represent both resolution and tangible change.” King went on, “Mad Cow has had a decade to rectify their failing leadership, financial operations, and their diversity and inclusion issues. What the community is calling for is not new or unreasonable.

This [CFEA] stand simply means that the buck stops here. Incidents are no longer isolated. There is a well-documented history of abuse and mishandling of artists by this theater. We are not saying that we want the theater to cease to exist. We are saying that we want the abuse to end. “This is not an attack or a threat,” King said. “It is a call to accountability. Which Mad Cow, along with this entire community, pledged to partake in a year ago. We will not accept any more gaslighting or empty statements. We will only come to the table at this point to help make change happen. That is our mission. That is our only goal.” As for Estrella, she went back to work on the show, including its extension, but the experience left her emotionally wounded. “I love Mad Cow, I love their shows and I love the artists (cast, crew, designers) who I get a chance to work with. It breaks my spirit to where I get depressed when my co-workers or I haven’t been paid,” she told me. “The last thing I want is for Mad Cow to fail. All I’m asking is for the chronic behavior of artists having to constantly reach out to get paid has to come to an end. I’m hoping that CFEA can help Mad Cow with these changes to where we can all feel safe knowing that we will get paid on time.” I wish I could be as magnanimous as Estrella, but years of watching talented friends getting taken advantage of has crippled my journalistic objectivity on this topic. I personally struggled for months to get paid after working for Mad Cow, years before they moved into their rent-free Church Street home, and I have conducted my own silent protest by declining to cover their work (with very rare exceporlandoweekly.com

tions) for several years. As King said, “We believe that there are people who want to be a part of the solution. However, if the head is not changed, then all you are doing is rearranging the chairs in the room. Nothing effective or lasting happens. Mad Cow should give itself a chance to grow, change and thrive with trusted leadership and tangible action.” Sadly, the problems — and their longneeded solutions — extend far beyond any one artist, one executive director or even one company. First, the City of Orlando needs to separate the operation and booking of publicly owned venues from the artistic organizations that occupy them. The current situation is akin to a taxpayer-funded baseball field being handed over to one particular Little League team, which then only allows its own players to use it. Second, Central Florida’s biggest theater companies all need younger, more colorful leadership at the very top. I’m a bit bitter that my Gen X cohorts (who should be in our career primes) largely lost out on opportunities to lead because late Boomers ahead of us have clung to power, but now it’s time to let someone new have a turn running the show. If you’ve been in charge of a local nonprofit arts organization for over a decade, I urge you to read “I don’t own that job” by Lily Janiak (San Francisco Chronicle, July 7, 2021) and ask yourself what you’re doing to make room for the rising generation. Nick Filet stakes its claim on pricey filet mignon sandwiches BY FAIYAZ KARA

elcome to Nick Filet, home of the $30 sandwich. If a $30 sandwich sounds obscene, consider the following: 1) It’s comprised of 16 ounces of filet mignon stuffed into a Kaiser roll; 2) The restaurant where it’s served is situated in the Marketplace at Dr. Phillips, where Orlando’s 1-percenters often cluster; 3) If you scarf it down in less than 10 minutes, you’ll get your gluttonous mug up on their “wall of fame”; and 4) It actually costs $29.99. OK, maybe it is obscene and, c’mon, celebrating piggish behavior with a photo wall seems just a bit, I don’t know, 2005. But there Nick Filet stands, encompassing all the spirit and vivacity of a freshly slaughtered cow. I mean, there’s more to interior design than repurposing the motif of a space’s predecessor (in this case, LemonShark Poke) and painting a wall red. Then again, this is a fast-casual eatery and lingering patrons aren’t part of their business model. No, it’s all about selling pricey meat sandwiches here, though, of course, there are less extortionate sandwiches to be had. There’s the half-pounder ($18.49) and the quarter-pounder ($11.49), the latter

tagged with “most popular” status. Gee, I wonder why. That said, the surf and turf sandwich ($18.99) did draw some intrigue for its half-pound mix of filet mignon and lobster cooked in butter (sorry, Mainers) served on a mayo’ed club roll. It’s drizzled with warm butter and, along with a side of Old Bay tater tots ($2.59 small; $4.15 medium; $7.49 large), made for a decent lunch. If it’s only the surf you crave, they also serve a lobster roll ($15.99), four ounces of chilled claws and knuckles dressed with mayo (sorry, Nutmeggers). It, too, was all well and good — that is, until I bit into a shell. Never fun, especially given I’d been at the dentist earlier that day. No shells in the Nicky Diablo ($11.99), with its quarter-pound of filet layered with pepper jack, jalapeños and hot sauce. This sandwich was enjoyed with a side of white cheddar mac & cheese ($5.49) that I liked even more than those seasoned tots. Now, being a chain out of Philadelphia, Nick Filet

Norman’s, the much-anticipated restaurant from Norman Van Aken, is now slated to open at the Dellagio Town Center in Dr. Phillips early next year … Tabla, the top-notch Indian restaurant with locations near Universal Studios and on Park Avenue in Winter Park, will open an outpost this winter in the old Rubio’s Coastal Grill space in Lake Nona … Oro, a “high-energy” Mexican concept from the owners of downtown nightclubs Celine, Ember and Tier, will open at 331 S. Park Ave. in the space that previously housed Mon Petit Cherie Cafe in Winter Park … The same group will also bring a “sports club” (think high-end sports bar meets nightclub) to the recently shuttered Finnhenry’s Public House space at 39 N. Orange Ave. … Zaza New Cuban Diner will open its sixth location, this one in the former Burgerim space at 1351 Alafaya Trail in Oviedo. Look for an October opening … Kyoto Sushi and Grill will open its Winter Park location in the old Spoleto space at 349 N. Orlando Ave. next month … Git-N-Messy, the barbecue concept by the late Chuck Cobb, will open a stall inside Henry’s Depot in Sanford this October. Cobb teamed up with Chris Poulos to open Red-Eye’s GitN-Messy Smokehouse & Tavern in Winter Springs last year. The Henry’s Depot location will serve as a pilot program for eventual GNM franchises.

does serve what they call a “Nickadelphia” ($11.99/$18.99) with provolone, onions and horseradish sauce on an Amoroso’s bun. Will it supplant the cheesesteak? You can probably guess. The Dr. Phillips location is the first Nick Filet outside of the Philly/Jersey Shore area. So why Orlando? Chains and Orlando go hand-in-hand, as you know, but owner Nick Kline said his main reason for opening here was Florida’s looser COVID-related restrictions. (Gov. Ron DeSantis even appeared at the opening.) Naturally, an expansion plan has been put in place for Texas as well. The workers here wear T-shirts that say “100% real filet mignon” on the back. I LOLed when I first saw it, but then I started thinking about it a little more. Why “100%”? Why “real”? Why not just have it say “filet mignon”? Have skeptical customers questioned the authenticity of the beef? No one here could tell me the grade of beef being used (it’s certainly not USDA Prime), or from where the meat is sourced. They could’ve made some calls or inquiries, given there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. But then it hit me. Nick Filet is a play on Chik-fil-A, and its menu is an inverse of the most popular chicken chain in the country. Sure, imitation may be the greatest form of flattery, but given the dearth of patrons here, I’m guessing they’d rather Eat Mor Chikin. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

The latest offering from Jason and Sue Chin is arguably their prettiest and their most accessible. The Creative Village restaurant presents modern comfort fare courtesy of chef Josh Oakley, who garnered a following after opening the Smiling Bison. Fried chicken, pastrami corn dogs and chicken waffles are all worth ordering, but the must-try dishes are jerk-spiced chicken hearts and duck served with sour cherry-scallion relish spooned over Murasaki sweet potatoes. “The perfect cheesecake” lives up to the hype. You’ll feel the love as soon as you enter the restaurant, nestled in the Collegiate Way plaza at the corner of University Boulevard and Alafaya Trail. A warm welcome awaits from behind the cafeteria-style steam table, laden with up to 10 rotating Filipino delicacies (from garlicky chicken adobo to crispy deepfried pork belly) waiting to be served with rice or pancit. A little nervous about trying the pork shoulder stewed with serrano chilies and thickened with pork blood called dinuguan? Just ask for a little taste before committing. The staples served at Tajine Xpress comprise all the heartwarming comfort one would expect from a Moroccan restaurant, from flaky bastille and briwat to the superb tajines, most notably lemon chicken and goat curry. The kebab trio of chicken, shrimp and kefta (ground beef) couldn’t be cooked any better — be sure to enjoy them with eggplant zalouk and fiery harissa. Start and end with a pot of Moroccan mint tea. There’s also the “Brooklyn Shepherd,” a salad of cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, parsley, feta, grape leaves and unpitted Manzanilla olives. Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss by Steve Schneider PREMIERES WEDNESDAY: Bake Squad — Four expert bakers vie to provide a client with the best dessert in a reality competition that’s also the perfect insurance policy. Because if you’re planning a gay wedding and one of these culinary wizards refuses to participate, you’ve got three left who might not be Nazis. (Netflix) Five Bedrooms — The second season of the Aussie drama about cohabitating singles features a new house, a secret romance and two pregnancies. Two? Sounds like somebody’s been spending a lot of time “down under.” (Paramount+) What If …? — Once upon a time, Marvel Comics had a title devoted specifically to off-the-wall scenarios that existed outside its regular continuity — scenarios like “What if Nick Fury had fought World War II in space?” and “What if we paid our artists health insurance?” The spirit of that book lives on in an animated series that takes some of the studio’s classic films in a different direction. If you want to see Peggy Carter becoming Captain America, it’s the show for you. Just don’t expect that thing about the health insurance, because it’s too far-fetched. (Disney+)

PREMIERES THURSDAY: Ex-Rated — It’s The Newlywed Game without the ring, as former partners are reunited to explain everything they didn’t like about each other. Hey, there’s a great way to ensure you’ll never go on a date with anyone ever again. (Peacock) The Hype — The pitch is “an urban Project Runway”: Ten designers compete to determine who’s the best at creating streetwear. (And if the phrase “urban” strikes you as racist, think hard about “streetwear.” What, you can’t wear this junk if you actually have a home?) (HBO Max) The Kingdom — This Argentinian series follows a televangelist who becomes a candidate for president after his running mate is murdered. Believe me, that’s the episode of What If Mike Pence wants to see. (Netflix)

Titans — Season 3 moves the action to Gotham City and introduces a bunch of that burg’s habitués as new characters, including Barbara Gordon, Tim Drake and Dr. Jonathan Crane — here played by Mad Men’s Vincent “Pete Campbell” Kartheiser. The way I see it, that opens the door to June having the Scarecrow’s baby in the next season of The Handmaid’s Tale, and let me tell you I am HERE FOR IT. (HBO Max)

PREMIERES FRIDAY: Beckett — John David Washington plays an American tourist pursued by the Greek government following a tragic accident. And he can’t come home, because he’s still wanted here for Tenet. (Netflix) Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.01 Thrice Upon a Time — The latest feature film in the anime franchise promises a whole bunch of narrative developments, but this could be my favorite: “Rei requires constant exposure to LCL and cannot maintain herself, decomposing in Shinji’s presence.” Tell me you haven’t felt that way every day since 1997. (Amazon Prime) Modern Love — Minnie Driver, Anna Paquin and Sophie Okonedo are among the stars who will appear in the second season of this anthology series based on the New York Times romance column. What we really want: a “Bots of New York” series directed by Crispin Glover. (Amazon Prime) Valeria — Season 2 of the Spanish series prevents more travails for its lead character, a writer who feels that something’s missing from her life. Read that sentence to your writer friends and then ask them why they’re laughing so hard. (Netflix)

“I

Bartenderz’ humor manages to thankfully sidestep the dreaded descriptors “wacky” or “novelty” through conviction and pop smarts. “I don’t go out like ‘Hey, I want to write a funny song,’ that’s more of an extension of who I am,” says Costello. “The main idea, ultimately, is to surprise myself or to confound any expectations and be as unpredictable as possible.” One song that ticks all those boxes deftly is “Payment Status Unavailable,” an accidental anthem that takes the tried-and-true Britpunk ’78 musical template and applies it to Orlandoans checking and rechecking their DEO accounts. “During the early months of COVID, waiting on a stimulus payment, I just kept thinking that this is the American version of being on the dole queue, like the things all those Oi! bands were singing about, and that stuff was always funny to me, bands being like ‘Poll tax!’ or ‘Thatcher!’” says Costello. “This is the American version of the dole queue, waiting to get a stimulus payment or unemployment.” In the coming weeks (and months), some of the vast archive of Future Bartenderz songs make its way from the digital to the analog realm. “REUNION BLUES” I fell in love with my second cousin about four years ago at a family reunion. (I hadn’t laid eyes on him since I was a kid!) I was 15 when we met, he was two years older, and we were in a long-distance relationship for three years. We ended things a year ago and I’m going to be seeing him for the first time since our breakup at another family reunion this fall. He’s bringing his new girlfriend. Do I have a responsibility to make her feel comfortable? Do I avoid him and risk family drama? I’ve done so much to work through this, Dan, and I’d love to see this as a healthy exercise in staying true to myself. Cancel On Upcoming Shindig? I’m Not Sure! I’m hoping it was just the usual heartache you had to work through after this relationship ended — by which I mean to say, COUSINS, I’m hoping your ex-boyfriend (and current second cousin) wasn’t emotionally or physically abusive and you weren’t working through trauma. And I’m hoping you didn’t get too much grief about dating your second cousin from other family members. (First cousins can legally marry all over the world!) Assuming your ex was only guilty of breaking your heart (a risk we take when dating anyone), you should approach this family reunion like any mature adult who finds herself at a wedding or a funeral or a holiday party with an ex. You slap a smile on your face and say hello to your ex, you tell his new girlfriend it’s nice to meet her, and then you avoid both of them for the rest of day. If you’re worried about getting trapped in a conversation with either or both of them, COUSINS, and don’t have it in you to say, “I’m sorry, you’ll have to excuse me, I gotta go take a monster shit,” then deputize someone to run interference for you. Your designated interferer should stay by your side as much as possible, COUSINS, and if you get separated and they see you trapped in an extended conversation with your ex or his new girlfriend, COUSINS, it’s their job to swoop in and rescue you. And if family members gave you grief about dating your second cousin — if you were subjected to more than some gentle awkwardness-acknowledging, tensionreleasing ribbing about the situation — and that grief was the source of whatever you had to work through since breaking up with the guy who was essentially your high school boyfriend (a guy you were always going to break up with at some point), COUSINS,

then this reunion is an opportunity to tell those people to go fuck themselves. Should I worry about my son who is 24 years old, straight, cute, has friends and is also a virgin? Mulling Over Moments You can tell a mom not to worry but a mom is still gonna worry, MOM, so you go right ahead and worry. But if your son knows he can talk with you about anything and he’s chosen not to talk with you about this, and if your son isn’t upset about it or otherwise miserable, leave him alone. If he has friends — and you say that he does — then he has peers he can confide in about his love life, assuming he wants one, and open up to about his sexual inexperience, if he regards it as a problem, which he may not. I’ve been reading you for many years. You have great language skills. But your use of “gonna” and “wanna” for “going to” and “want to” just comes across as adolescent and condescending. You’re too old to be using that sort of lingo, Dan. Please respect yourself and your readers. Griping Over Nauseatingly Nonsensical Affectations You’re gonna hafta pry those “gonnas” and “wannas” outta my cold, dead hands, GONNA, if you wanna get ’em outta my column. Three months ago, I came out as polyamorous in an email I sent to my immediate and my entire extended family, because I’m done asking one of my partners to pretend he’s “our roommate” when my parents or siblings come to visit, and it hurts me so much to exclude him from family events and holidays. (And it hurts him too.) My whole family is getting together over Labor Day Weekend and all three of us are planning to go. Is there any way to avoid awkwardness? Bringing All My Boyfriends Inside Nope. (P.S. They’ll get used to you being poly, you’ll get used to them knowing you’re poly, and it’ll get less awkward over time. But there’s no way to avoid that first blast of pure awkwardness. Instead of trying to avoid it, BAMBI, try to have a sense of humor about it.) youth leader, who was my best friend’s stepdad and who I viewed as a father figure, was a sexual predator. When I was 17, he started asking me for sex and also told me he’d thought of me “that way” since I was 12. I found out later he got a woman with a mental disability pregnant, and my childhood best friend has hinted to me that he assaulted her as well. Much to my rage, this guy’s wife, this church, and even my own parents never went after this guy legally or otherwise. Outrageously, he’s still a member in good standing of this same church. A few days ago, a different childhood friend died. He was my best friend’s cousin, and we all grew up together. Obviously, this asshole will be at the funeral. I’m determined to be there to support my friend but how do I interact with this predator without causing a scene? I don’t want to make this sad reunion about me, but I refuse to entertain this guy in any way. Any thoughts on telling him to go fuck himself? I’ve been to a few funerals in my time, FUNERAL, and it’s not the people at the funeral we tend to remember — it’s the people who were there for us before the funeral and after. Head home, be there for your old friend, and feel free to skip the funeral if that asshole is gonna be there.

Your childhood best friend dropped hints about being assaulted by this man — her stepfather — but she never actually came out and told you that. But you know for a fact that he preyed on a mentally disabled woman and that he sexually harassed you when you were a minor.
